“That was to give a nod to the band I have now,” Mick laughs, “because, after all, they are the ones going out and playing the bloody songs. I wanted to give them some kind of creative ownership about the compilation.” Mick goes on to say, however, that those songs were recorded prior to banjo player Ayleen O’Hanlon joining the fold alongside Squeezebox Wally, bass player Michael Hubbard and drummer Dave Folley. “It’s become a really solid line-up and everyone involved is really into it,” he then says. “Everyone is in other bands, of course, but it was surprisingly easy to get them all together.”

MICK THOMAS & THE ROVING COMMISSION By Robert Dunstan Mick Thomas & The Roving Commission have been roving this wide brown land since Easter and will now be gracing Adelaide for two shows with the promise that each will be quite different to the other as it often was when Mick led folk rock band Weddings Parties Anything. “That’s always been the way with me,” Mick says. “The shows are always different from night to night. It’s not the same bunch of songs every night because you have to keep challenging yourself. ‘You can’t just keep playing the songs that you know are always going to work,” he adds with a laugh. “People are paying to see us so we don’t just wanna be going through the motions. We have to keep up our end of the bargain.” The band are coming to town armed with the singer’s These Are The Songs, a hefty compilation of songs taken from Mick’s solo releases and his tenure with The Sure Thing and various versions of The Roving Commission. Mick, who thinks a brand new solo album won’t appear until 6

“It’s a double album so it would be really expensive to do that,” Mick says. “Liberation said I could do it if I wanted but they couldn’t help financially. I just can’t do it myself. “And I always get a bit of smirk on my face whenever anyone says, ‘Vinyl is coming back’, because I remember the days of vinyl but no one was talking about runs of just 100 or 150 back then. A run of 100 is pretty much the standard for vinyl these days.” The singer recently appeared on a live RockWiz show with old mate Billy Bragg who had been a guest on Weddings Parties Anything’s King Tide album and with whom they have toured. “Billy and I did Midnight Special together for the RockWiz thing and then I did It Ain’t Necessarily So because it was Easter and they wanted a religious song.” Mick has only performed at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on one occasion in the past but enjoyed it. “It’s a well-run pub in a great spot not too far out of town,” he says of the venue which was recently inducted into the SA Music Venues Hall Of Fame. “And it’s a bit like a chip off the old block because it’s quite similar in feel to the Grace Emily.” Also on the bill will be special guests Raised By Eagles. “They’re great and good mates of ours,” Mick enthuses. “Nick O’Mara who plays lap steel with them was with us for a while. By Ian Messenger The Sound Garage is the new go-to place in the city for all manner of guitar repairs and even for those of us who yearn a custom-built guitar. Jordan Reynolds has been tinkering with guitars for many a year now, and this new premises located upstairs between Jive and Enigma Bar on the west end of Hindley St, Adelaide, promises a convenient pit stop for anyone needing a guitar technician before they hit the stage. BSide Magazine caught up with Reynolds at this new workshop that uncannily seemed like the old dB Magazine offices - oh yes they are! and

“The customer will come in and I’ll have a chat to them and get the general idea what they want with their guitar. More often, I’ll have a

spec sheet where I’ve listed just everything on a guitar. We go through that and I rattle off every question, ‘What kind of timber do you like?’ “Often people don’t even know, they’ve never thought of that, but I get a general idea and I put it all together for them and say, cool, this is what I think will be a good guitar.”

I asked Reynolds when he first became interested in working on guitars. “I started doing it seriously in 2008 when I started my school-based apprenticeship. But before that I was tinkering, pulling things apart with my dad. He’s a bit of a tinkerer as well… Then I did work experience at Fretco Guitar Repairs.”

Although the majority of Reynold’s work is guitar repairs and set ups, one can’t help to notice a bunch of interesting custom made guitars in various degrees of completion hanging on the walls with ‘J. Reynolds’ written on the headstock. I wondered what the process is to get a custommade guitar. 8

What kind of woods do you get from overseas? “Lots of figured tops. I get maples, whether it’s flamed maples or burls, buckeye which is a type of burl, walnuts, poplar. You can get really good poplar in Australia.”

I’ve heard on the grapevine our man can fix your guitar last minute if you are in the know. With this new guitar workshop hovering between Jive and Enigma Bar I wondered if such a Red Cross service extended to anyone? “I’ve always been bit of a goto to people I’ve known on the scene, people contacting me all hours of the day and night with all kinds of situations and I’ve always made myself as available as possible and will continue to do so. “But now being set up smack bang within three or four venues being a stones throw from here I like the idea of people being able to call upon me to get stuff done, on the way into a gig or while they’re setting up, to really be of service because as any guitarist or musician knows if something goes wrong it’s the end of the world.” True dat brother! And hey, you’ve got some weird looking guitars up on the wall. Fan frets? Have I been living in a closet? What’s going on there? Who does fan frets, or multi-scale, suit? “First things first, who do they suit? Everyone! That’s the reality of it,” enthuses Reynolds. “It’s associated with metal and heavier music or experimental prog music purely because those guys tend to take advantage of it and be open-minded

to new designs. Your traditional blues-rock guys are Strat/Les Paul and nothing else, you know. They look at a PRS and think it’s outrageous. “The concept is similar to a piano. You’ve got a longer scale length on your bass side, so it increases tension, gives you more balanced sound, especially if you’re tuning down. “Normally the further you tune down, guitar strings get all floppy and horrible sounding. Also with fan frets it’s ergonomic for your playing, so it’s a lot more comfortable if you have wrist problems or RSI.” The Sound Garage is a very cool space indeed. Perched over the west end of Hindley St looking down on the comings and goings below, it makes you just want to hangout, drink espressos and read Nietzsche. Noting the interesting local artwork on the walls, I asked Reynolds what his basic vision was for the space. “Well for me I like hanging out with artists, I like hanging out with cool creative people and collaborating, and I really want to do it more. “For me that’s kind of important about this place. It’s not just another guitar shop: you go, you drop your guitar off, you leave. I want people to feel welcome and hangout.” The Sound Garage, upstairs at 179 Hindley St, Adelaide, is now open for business from 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday and from 10am until 4pm on Saturdays. SNATCHED (MA) **1/2

Topliner/producer Amy Schumer headlines this lamebrained laffer (the second of her proper leading-lady vehicles after the sharper Trainwreck), and while she brings her trademark crudeness and non-moviestar-like cuteness to the proceedings, she can’t save it from rampant silliness. And, of course, Goldie Hawn appears alongside Amy in her first movie role in 15 years, and while this comic combo seems promising, the only really favourable thing you can say about it is yes, they’re both blond. Amy’s Emily Middleton is fired from her job and loses her dopey boyfriend, and she descends into Schumeresque misery while also wondering who’s now going to accompany her on her forthcoming holiday in Ecuador, and the audience is left stunned by writer/ producer Katie Dippold’s decision to feature such an absurd plot. After all, what idiot American goes to Ecuador for a vacation… oh, right, okay, that one. Emily, of course, winds up inviting along her Mom Linda (Goldie), who’s happy 16

to go, despite being afraid of almost everything in modern American life, and the pair engage in irksome shenanigans in sunny Hawaii, sorry, Ecuador, before the hot guy who’s been conning Emily turns out to be part of a plan to kidnap the ladies for a big ransom. After hamming it up in a cell, they get free and escape across the countryside, with Emily in a slip, Linda in denial and a series of ludicrous plot tricks cropping up in an effort to stretch the film out to feature length (including that extended parasite set piece which proves weird, desperate and embarrassing). Directed by Jonathan Levine (who went from idiosyncratic pieces like All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, 50/50, The Wackness and Warm Bodies to another coarsely dumb comedy, The Night Before), this threatens to be amusing when Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack turn up as a pair of pseudo-military Yank avengers, and Schumer’s fanbase will love it no matter what, but it’s really more irritating than funny. And how many damn times have you all thought that at the movies in recent years, girls?

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (M) **1/2

English co-writer/coproducer/director Guy Ritchie (aka a former Mr Madonna, of course) went from cool outings like Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch to those barely okay Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmeses and that dreary Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie, and his decline continues with this hopelessly dull fantasy-ish epic rejigging of those hoary old Arthurian myths. And yes, when it comes to these creaky stories we’ve had the sincere version (Excalibur), the mystical version (TV’s The Mists Of Avalon), the dumb action version (the Clive Owenstarring King Arthur) and, of course, the comedy version (Monty Python And The Holy Grail), and so now we get the grindingly tedious version. Filmed in the UK and in lots (and lots) of studios, this American production opens with warlock Mordred (Rob Knighton) and his hordes attacking Camelot with FX armies and monstrous elephants, but he’s eventually stopped by Uther Pendragon (glum Eric Bana) who, in turn, is betrayed by brother Vortigern (Jude Law struggling to be evil), which leads to Uther’s little son

drifting away to Londinium, where he’s raised by kindly prostitutes. They name him Arthur and he grows up to be a sort of bovver boy played by Charlie Hunnam, who has no idea of his royal roots, until a series of clunky circumstances result in him pulling the sword out of that stone and alerting Vortigern to his hidden king-iness. Reams of yakking drag along with sequences of FXoverload action as we get into the endless business of escape, capture, doublecross and more, with Arthur evading execution and Ritchie going all Game Of Thronesish (surprise, surprise!) with demons and witches and other fantastical threats, most of which have little to do with the actual legend of King Arthur. But hey, who cares, orright? Some sources claim that this was originally intended to be the first part of a series no less than six (!!!!!) movies long, and yet its miserable failure at the box office should kill any prospect of even a Part 2 deader than Arthur himself (and even as these words are being written it’s being proclaimed a worse financial turkey than last year’s epically daft attempt to do another Ben-Hur). Poor old Guy will be pulling the sword out of his back at this rate…

Staffy Lee, of Adelaide band Already Gone, formed Sticks, Strings & Music Wings in an acoustic concert as a fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation and engaged th Williams Jr, Courtney Robb, Lost Woods, AP D’Antonio and Hannah Yates along wit participate. By Robert Dunstan Staffy set up the fundraiser, as he wanted to raise awareness about the Leukaemia Foundation as he had personally used their services. “I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin Lymphoma when I was 24 and got a bunch of treatment but six months later it was back,” he begins with a heavy sigh. “They discovered a 12-centimetre tumour in my chest and I could hardly breathe. “I think I lost 15 kilos so it was a full on thing to go through but I went through it and beat it,” Staffy continues. “I’m still alive 12 years later. And it was around Christmas so every year at that time I think about it. “And this year just gone I was thinking about it again and had always wanted to do some kind of fundraiser for the foundation,” he adds. “While I was having my treatment, the Leukaemia Foundation were fantastic because they arranged to take me to hospital and get me back home whenever I needed treatment. “If they had not been there to do that, I would have really struggled,” Staffy notes. “So I really wanted to give something back [to them] so I set about organising a concert.” 18

Hannah, who often works with her mentor Nancy Bates, goes on to say she got into music at a young age when she began playing bassoon. “I’d gone into it wanting to play cello and walked out with a bassoon,” she laughs. “The only good thing is that if I ever need a bassoon player…” She is also in the process of recording. “I’m doing my honours degree this year in composition so I’m doing something to highlight indigenous culture,” she announces. “It’s all about preserving the culture so a lot of the songs will be in Kaurna language. “By the end of the year – probably November time – I’ll have an album,” Hannah reveals. Cal Williams Jr, who plays around town under his own name as well as with The Hushes while also keeping busy running The Guitar Academy, was also more than happy to take part. “Well, you know me,” he laughs. “I’ll virtually play at any charity concert I’m asked to do. And this is a great cause.

“It can be quite confronting,” Cal continues. “I was speaking to a guy about his treatment and he told me it was three hours worth. And then he told me it was for three hours every day.

“Staffy sent me a message on Facebook about the fundraiser and I was quick to say yes because I don’t think there’s anyone who has not been touched in some way by cancer. “I lost my mum about seven years ago to cancer but, that aside, I just think it’s really important to take part in events such as this,” Courtney says. “It’s the least I can do. I just don’t have the money to donate anything but can help out in other ways.” When AP D’Antonio, who is currently in the process of recording an album with the help of his elder brother, John, got wind of the fundraiser, he immediately put his hand up to take part. “I think everyone knows of someone who has some form of cancer,” he says. “Someone close got diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas and went downhill really quickly. “And I think people tend to forget that cancer also greatly affects the people around those who have it,” AP, who has not yet decided on the hat he will wear on the night let alone the songs he will do, says. “Some members of the family are now going through various stages of depression because of it. “And I reckon it’s a good thing to talk openly about,” AP then decides. “Having a fundraiser will get people together who have been affected in some way by cancer to talk about it over some music and a couple of beers. “Events such as this fundraiser will get people together because too many people see cancer as a taboo subject and don’t want to discuss it,” AP adds. “Yeah,” Staffy quickly agrees. “It’s important to say to people, ‘Hey, it’s okay. Shit happens. Let’s talk about it’. Anything that brings people together is important.”

“So, yeah, I was keen to be involved in any kind of fundraiser,” he enthuses. Courtney Robb, who is in the planning stages of a new EP which she will record at The Yearlings’ My Sweet Mule studio, was also keen to take part.

Sticks, Strings & Music Wings will feature Cal Williams Jr, Courtney Robb, Lost Woods, AP D’Antonio, Hannah Yates and Already Gone in order to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation at an event from 4-11pm on Sunday 18 June at the Grace Emily Hotel, 232 Waymouth St, Adelaide, with a $10 donation at the door and a huge raffle with some major prizes set to take place. 19

There’s Gonna Be A Showdown I was a little taken aback only the other day when Bernard Fanning, once of Powderfinger, announced a national tour to promote his new solo album, Brutal Dawn.

It was brutal. And then, if dawned on me that is wasn’t even dawn yet and that more shots would likely be fired at Bernard once people were fuelled by an early morning shot of coffee or two.

And no, I wasn’t taken aback because Bernard was touring (although that’s quite another issue as I have never quite forgiven the singer for having a dose of the flu and being unable to turn up for a special meet and greet that took place at Adelaide Oval before what it is now) but was taken aback due to the amount of flak he received on his Facebook page when he – or more likely his handlers – posted about the tour. And the flak wasn’t about the fact Bernard was touring but was of numerous people complaining that he couldn’t see fit to fit in cities such as GeeLong, CanBerra and New-Castle as part and parcel of the upcoming jaunt around the country.

Florida’s Ben Cooper (AKA Radical Face) is looking forward to touring Australia with his band as it’s a destination he’s had on his wish list for a good number of years and which is now finally coming to fruition. By Robert Dunstan “It’s been a long, long time since I’ve been to a new territory – something like five years – so I am pretty excited about coming down,” Ben says over the phone from home in the US. “I’ve been trying to come down for a while but something always happened,” he sighs. “There would be scheduling issues or something else and it’s kind of funny because it’s like a Catch 22 because when you’ve never been somewhere before, promoters worry about people showing up to the shows. “So, the first tour is always tricky,” Ben laughs. “Having said that, I’m always getting people from Australia contacting my website and asking about a tour. I always say, ‘Thanks, I’ll try and get there some day’. And now it’s happening.” Ben has a new EP, SunnMoonnEclippse – which has its own amazing website at <sunnmoonneclippse. com> – but stresses that he won’t be concentrating on that release on his debut visit. “I decided that, since I’ve never been to Australia, I’d do a kind of greatest hits thing,” he says. “So I’ve been putting it out on Facebook and asking people to send requests for what they want to hear. Because people have been asking me to come down since something like 2007, I thought that was only fair. “I’ll be going right back to the beginning and doing three or four songs off each record,” Ben announces. “It’s my way

of making up for lost time. And I don’t even know if I’ll be doing any of the songs from the new EP. I won’t know that until we start rehearsals.

Did you reconcile with your parents after being kicked out of home? “I did, I did,” Ben says uneasily. “But about three years ago some more bad stuff came to light and one of them is now in prison. I thought we had made up but we splintered again over the court cases. “And I think that’s way I ended up writing so many songs about family,” he says of a trilogy of albums released from 2011 until 2016 under the names The Family Tree: The Roots, The Family Tree; The Branches and The Family Tree; The Leaves. Ben worked closely on his latest EP, SunnMoonnEclippse, with visual artist Gordon McBryde. “It was a fun project and was the first time I’d worked with a visual artist at the same time as making the music,” he says. “You usually make the music and then send it off to someone to do some visuals – and that’s always cool – but this was different as Gordon would show me ideas first. “I was kind of writing to the visuals he was showing ne which I had never done before,” Ben concludes.
