emember back on Groundhog Day when my cat, Scooter, predicted an early spring? Did he nail it or what? We have been enjoying nice enough weather to ride without a jacket in March! If it has been that nice in March, what do you suppose April holds for us? I know this. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar has taken off like a rocket. Everyone in the motorcycle riding community has felt that sunshine on their back and is planning an event. Listing an event in the Cruisin’ Calendar is FREE and easy. Just go to FullThrottleMagazine.com and click on Cruisin’ Calendar then on “Submit Event” fill in the fields and it is done! Keep in mind that this gets your ad up on the web and distributed all across North & South Carolina in the print edition for FREE! If you would like to have a bigger presence in Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for your CHARITY event, you can send us your flyer and we will print it for as little as $82.50 and that INCLUDES DISTRIBUTION. Let me see you beat that with a flyer! We have also seen a spike in new advertisers whom we welcome with open arms. In addition to our regular supporters, please let these advertisers know that you saw their ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and that you appreciate their support for the motorcycle community. While I’m at it, check out the VIP page both in the magazine and on the web. Your FREE VIP card gives you the opportunity to score some freebies at participating advertisers. You can print a VIP card and VIP Biker Coupons from our web page and share them with your friends. Check it out! Who doesn’t like free stuff? Speaking of FREE, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine began as a FREE monthly magazine in August 1998 with 10,000 copies. April 2012 will be issue #165 and we are still FAH-REE. In fact, we have only had two price increases in our 14-year history. Who loves ya, baby? We have a saying here: The cowards never started and the weak died along the way. Help us celebrate another successful riding season by reading The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and not crashing. If you do crash, we have attorneys that can help you! Ride safe so you don’t need them.

1st Annual Smokinest Chili Cook Off

By: Mark Infield I love Chili cook offs because I love chili and at cook offs, I get to taste a variety of different recipes. On February 25th I had the opportunity to ride the motorcycle, which is another thing I love to do, to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC for their 1st Annual Smokinest Chili Cook Off. It was a beautiful spring day with lots of sunshine and a light breeze. The kind of day that makes you glad to sit in the sun and let the breeze cool you off. So that’s exactly what I did. When I arrived at Smokin’ H-D, 3 Rusty Nails from Winston-Salem was providing Christian Rock music and there were 12 different chilis entered. I started with the first one and worked my way to number 12. Each entrant was so willing to have me taste their chili that it was hard to keep from getting too much chili at each station. I mean can you imagine eating 12 bowls of chili? I had to hold them back so that I could taste all the entries. It was tough because they were all so good. Here’s my take on them. #1) Gary Bristow: good old chili w/ red beans. Good flavor and a slight after glow. #2) Ann Matthews: Chicken chili w/white beans called “All Fired Up”. #3) Preston Bowden: Nice chili. Good flavor. #4) Jesse Stegall: Sweet tomato taste. Good! #5) Christine Mercantini: Mild w/ more beans than meat. #6) Keegan Wright: Mild, but good flavor. #7) Marcia Bowenn: Special! Steak, sausage, hamburger, and beans. #8) Charles Evans: HOT! I could see and taste the crushed red peppers. #9) Howie Baby: “Taco Chili Beans” 2 kinds of beans made for good flavor. #10) Pam Graham: Very good chili flavor. #11) Bruce Topping: Shredded chicken chili w/tomatoes and spices. Very tasty. #12) Mark Leonard: White chicken chili w/white beans. Tasty, but like white chocolate, I have trouble making it taste like chili in my mind. And the winners are: 1st Place - Gary Bristow and 2nd Place –

Ann Matthews. CONGRATULATIONS! I am glad that I did not have to be a judge. All of the entries were very good. I know. I tasted them all! What a great day at Smokin’ H-D. I finished it up at Freeborne’s South where I watched the end of the NASCAR Nationwide Series race. Heather kept those cold $2 longnecks coming until I headed for home. Chili, Harley-Davidsons, NASCAR, and beer. It just doesn’t get any better than that! Check out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar to see what events are scheduled at Smokin’ HarleyDavidson and Freeborne’s South or just drop by 3441 Myer Lee Drive (I-40 Bus, Exit 10) for a visit any time. It is a destination worth the ride! You can visit both destinations on the web and Facebook to get more information. I recommend a visit to get the full affect.

Kickstart Classic Goes To AMCA Southern National Magazine publisher and old-bike fanatic Buzz Kantner is hosting the second Motorcycle Kickstart Classic event in May, and this year’s two-day ride will have a familiar destination for AMCA members: the Southern National Meet in Denton, North Carolina. Limited to 100 riders, the event starts May 16 in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, home of Dale Walksler’s Wheels Through Time Museum. The ride will roll out the following morning on a 250-mile route to Crossroads Harley- Davidson in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, for a reception and party. Then, on Friday, May 18, riders head for Denton, where they’ll enjoy special parking and a parade as part of the Southern National Meet, hosted by the AMCA’s Blue Ridge, Catawba Valley, and Dixie Chapters. This meet is set in a great location, the historic Denton Farm Park, where dozens of preserved buildings provide the perfect backdrop for classic motorcycles. And, of course, the meet is open free of charge to AMCA members. For those who want to participate in the Kickstart Classic, the entry fee of $100 per person includes discounts on motels en route, a sweep support vehicle, two dinners, T-shirts, and other cool stuff. To register send a check or money order made out to TAM Communications to: American Iron Magazine, Attn.: Motorcycle Kickstart Classic, 1010 Summer St., Stamtord, CT 06905. Please include your name, address, e-mail, and T-shirt size. Reprinted from The Antique Motorcycle, Spring 2012, Vol. 51 No. 1

18th Annual Burlington H.O.G. Hospice Bike Show

By: Scott Wicker The threat of wet weather and the talk of a bad economy had no effect on this year’s 18th Annual Burlington HOG Hospice Bike Show. In fact, it will go down as the group’s most successful bike show ever. The event was held at the Holly Hill Mall on February 18th and 19th. Over 80 motorcycles represented 36 categories to raise over $22,400 for Hospice of Alamance and Caswell Counties. Contributions were also raised through sales of 50/50 tickets and a bake sale held at the event. There was also a quilt raffled off as well. The Sport Touring Class raised over $6000, the most raised as a class. Each bike had milk jugs tied to the front wheel so spectators could make contributions by putting money in the jug of their favorite bike. As in years past, everyone was allowed to raise contributions prior to the event. Trophies were awarded to those who raised the most in each class and to those who raised the 2nd and 3rd highest amounts also. All the bikes were also judged separately by a panel of judges making it two shows in one. As in years past, the support was overwhelming. The winners and top finishers in each class are as follows. By: Amanda Lee Anderson Bill Carone Chevrolet-GMC-Buick-Ford in Wallace, NC hosted a charity poker run on Saturday, March 17th benefitting the Ronald McDonald House of Eastern North Carolina. The run began at the dealership and traveled to four locations across Duplin County. “I’ve always wanted to host a poker run, but put a spin on the traditional format by allowing cars and bikes to participate,” says Bill Carone. Bikes and vehicles of all shapes and sizes participated, as did riders of all ages. Run participants traveled to Warsaw Hardware, Kenansville Equipment Company, Jones Furniture in Pink Hill, and Bojangles Restaurant in Beulaville. The fifth card was given out at the dealership. Blake Wallace of the Duplin County Sheriff’s office provided a police escort for the event, which allowed the riders to cruise through all of the stop signs and stop lights. All of the proceeds from the run were donated to the Ronald McDonald House of Eastern North Carolina. “We chose the Ronald McDonald House as our charity because almost everyone knows a family that has been touched by their services, especially during these tough economic times,” says Amanda Anderson, marketing coordinator for Bill Carone. “We had 50 vehicles participate and raised $1400 for the house in Greenville. I’m proud and excited to present them with the proceeds from the run. We hope to make the poker run a yearly event.” Bill Carone Chevrolet-GMC-Buick was opened in June of 2010 followed by the Ford dealership in August of 2011. Both stores offer a full parts department and a service center staffed with GM and Ford certified technicians. Bill Carone Chevrolet-GMC-Buick-Ford strives to operate with the highest level of honesty and integrity and to provide sales and products that exceed customer expectations. Stop by Bill Carone ChevroletGMC-Buick-Ford at 5099 Hwy 117 N. in Wallace, NC and check out the dealership or visit BillCaroneCars.com to learn more.

By: DPapaBear I know a lot of people kinda store their 2 wheel machines during this time of the year, but this winter has provided us with some great riding weather all year so far and Saturday, February 18th turned into a very nice day to get out and about, whether you were on the 2 wheel machine or in a cage. It was also the day that the Midway Yamaha in Thomasville, NC showed their customers their appreciation for shopping with them. They had an open house event and served free hot dogs, chili, chips, cookies, and drinks all day. Who doesn’t want free food?? They also had discounts off of merchandise within the store. They sold raffle tickets for a nice padded rear quad bag for an ATV, which was awarded to Brian McCall around 3:30. He will have to make another trip back to Midway Yamaha to pickup his prize as he had already headed out to somewhere else or riding. Riders streamed in and out at a steady pace for most of the day. Some were just passing by, talking with old friends and meeting new ones. Some were there just for the food, and others were looking for a specific item. One guy laid claim to a new bike while others bought items like t-shirts, leathers, bags, parts, and accessories. Harvey was there all day and catching up with friends and gossip as he has been under the weather recently. If you were among the ones that made it by, we hope all the staff made you feel welcome and helped you find all you were looking for. If you missed it, stop by any Tuesday thru Saturday and wish Harvey all the best and let Shane or Susan help you. Midway Yamaha & Suzuki is about one of the only remaining bike shops located in the Thomasville area. They are also a co sponsor of Star Touring and Riding Piedmont - Triad Chapter 105, so come by and check that out, too. They sell and service Yamaha and Suzuki motorcycles as well as the ATV’s. So if you are on the 2 wheels or 4 wheeled machines, street or dirt style, biker or hunter, or mud runner, stop by and check them out. They can also work on the Honda machines as well and will be glad to assist you on that. A lot of businesses have struggled over the past couple years and it has been hard on most of us but stop by and let your biker friendly establishments know you appreciate them as well.As always, ride often, stay safe, have fun, and enjoy the journey along the way!! The journey, friends, sights and companionship ARE what it is all about! See u down the road.

Bros & Bro-ettes

This month we celebrate the most awesome event ever, the proof of Eternal Life; the Resurrection, the Life, Death, and Life of JESUS! It’s called Easter.

Luke 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spoke unto you when he was yet in Galilee, 7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8 And they remembered his words! 1Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that He was seen of Peter, then of the twelve: 6 After that, He was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, He was seen of James; then of all the apostles. Acts 1:9 And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward Heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into Heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into Heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into Heaven. This one event separates Christianity from all other religions. No other religion has a Living Savior! All other gods require you to die for them to show your loyalty. Only Christianity has a God of Love that sent His only begotten Son to die for us, and is alive forevermore! And it is proven by witnesses! Eggs Rot, Rabbits Die, HE LIVES !

Pray the Biker’s Prayer on this page, mean it in your heart as you pray it, and begin your relationship with the only true and Living Savior, Jesus Christ! Now celebrate Easter, it’s for you!

By: Betty Dillard It was a great way to start 2012 with the 1st Quarter Nazareth Children’s Home Birthday Party/Cook Out! We had a great turnout with about 35 bikes participating and some cars to join as well. The weather was great, the food was good and the fellowship was the best! Thank you all who came to celebrate the childrens’ birthdays. We want to thank our long time sponsors and volunteers for everything you all do. We could not do this without you all. Thanks to the following: Pat Rogers of Pat Rogers Speedway Harley-Davidson, Buffalo Troopers, Portia Pastries, ShowMars, Law Petroleum, United Claims, Sic Customs of Concord, NC, Rockwell Gang, My Son-in-Law Seth for creating our web sight Bikers With A Cause, and all the usual participants and the newcomers. No matter how large or small your donation and or time - it really does help us with the children. Darby really hated to miss another party due to being in the hospital, but he wanted me tell you all how much he appreciated everyone helping with the children and me. He really missed being there! Cheri (at Nazareth) please let the children know that Darby really LOVED his cards from the children! Those cards really meant a lot to him and me! We want to send out a special thank you to the Pat Rogers Foundation for topping off the children’s wish list. If you would like to contribute to the Nazareth Children’s Home Birthday Party/Cookouts you can do it through his foundation. It is tax deductible, if you do it through the foundation - just write Nazareth in the memo. Also, I ask that you look into The Pat Rogers Foundation for they help with many worthwhile charities. You can contact Cindy Abernathy @ Pat Roger’s Speedway H-D for more information. I thank you all for EVERYTHING - without you we can’t do this! We look forward to seeing you all in May. Our website will be operating soon. Bikers with a Cause

Local Heroes Cookout

By: Grant On March 10, 2012 Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury held their Local Hero’s Cook Out event. All Police, Firefighters and EMS workers were invited to a free lunch. The Salisbury Harley Owners Group did the cooking and serving and there were a lot to feed. I think every one had their fill of burgers and dogs. I know I was eating the smoke at the grill. Saturday had turned into a wonderful day and temps were great for getting that scooter out and coming down for a free meal. You did not need to be a local hero to get the free lunch and I know a many bikers ate with the wonderful men and women who make up the public servants of Salisbury. I enjoyed see and talking with the firefighters seeing as that is where I come from myself. There were also the kids that got to get into a big red fire truck and sit in a seat that they may dream about riding in one day. Loud horns and sirens are just a thing that can get your juices going, plus scare the sh!t out of you if you’re not paying attention. As with every town and city in this great country, these men and women are asked to pay a high price if need be for a small amount of money. If you see a soldier, a firefighter, a police officer, or an EMS worker take a minute to just say Thanks. It means a lot for them to know the law abiding citizens of their community support them. I know Tilley Harley-Davidson supports them and I do as

NC 209 - “The Rattler” Ride starts / ends at Junaluska. Usually done as an out-and-back ride to Hot Springs. It takes about 1 hour to ride NC 209 making this one of the most popular local roads when you’re looking for a short ride in the afternoon to kill a couple of hours and have a lot of fun. I often extend this ride with loops from the north end to enjoy more of the roads in this beautiful riding area. One of my favorite loops is shown. NC 209 has pretty much everything you come to the mountains for. It’s a nice mix of relaxing rolling pastoral valleys and edge-of-your-tires technical turns. You’ll climb over several mountains, trace the banks of rushing whitewater creeks, and savor the mountain views on every horizon. Route: NC 209 - Junaluska to Hot Springs. Short description From Junaluska follow NC 209 north to Hot Springs. Pass through Hot Springs, then follow US 25 / 70 south to Marshall. Cross the river in Marshall and follow Meadows Town Road to NC 63. NC 63 will take you back to the midpoint on NC 209. Follow NC 209 back to Junaluska. Long description Start: Exit 104 on Highway US 74. Lowes store at this exit. Pass under US 74. Follow NC 209 north. 3.7 Mi: Cross I-40 at Exit 24. It’s an easy ride through the valleys for a few miles. Make a long steady climb, then roll down the back side of the mountain. You will turn right near the bottom of the long downhill section. 11.9 mi: Turn Right onto Betsy’s Creek Road to continue on NC 209. Ferguson’s store / gas marks this corner. Lots of signs. Cross a short valley then start climbing. Very tight turns ahead. Watch for gravel in turns. Long twisty section across high mountain pass. Descend into a small valley. The next landmark is the junction with NC 63 near the midpoint of the ride. 22 mi : Junction NC 63 - Store and gas at this junction. Popular spot for a break. You’ll next enter long and flat Spring Creek valley. Enjoy one of the few straight pieces of road in the mountains. It won’t last. The next section twists along the bank of the creek for several miles. It’s a pleasant curvy run. NC 209 will hook sharply right and climb into the final challenging section that leads into Hot Springs. Tight and challenging curves last for several miles before you emerge on the outskirts of town. 36.6 mi - NC 209 ends at Hot Springs. Return as you came or continue on loop ride. To continue on loop ride Pass through Hot Springs. Cross the French Broad River and follow US 25 for 5 miles. US 25 will reach a stop sign. 41.7 mi - Turn Right to continue on US 25 / 70 towards Asheville. 50.9 mi - Veer right into Marshall on Main Street. Follow into town. 61.6 mi - Turn right at the traffic light in the center of Marshall and cross the bridge over the French Broad River. You are now on Bailey Branch Rd. It will become Meadows Town Road. Meadows Town Road ends in 10 miles at NC 63. 71.5 mi - Turn Right and follow NC 63 to return to the mid point of NC 209. There are some tight curves and steep climbs. Watch for gravel in turns. 85.5 mi - Turn left onto NC 209 and follow back to Junaluska to finish the ride. 98.4 mi - end of ride

Canine Angels Spaghetti Dinner

By: Steve (Who Let The Dogs Out) Rowland On 2-25-12 I rode to, and attended a fund raiser dinner. We have a local guy, Rick Kaplan, who is training dogs to help disabled veterans. Canine Angels Inc. is a non-profit that trains dogs to help disable vets in all sorts of ways. Rick Kaplan, the President, brought about 8 dogs to Dirty Dick’s Crab House in NMB tonight. Dale Green (GM) and his staff opened the restaurant up just for tonight’s dinner. They don’t open until March 1st, but donated the restaurant and their time for the dogs and this fund raiser. That was pretty good, and so was the spaghetti. Kathy Maupin and her crew put together an awesome dinner. They had great door prizes, silent auction, 50/50 and sold Tshirts. The 50/50 winner gave her winnings back and I won a little something as well. I talked to one Vietnam vet who told me that his dog can get him water from the fridge, go get his wallet, but the best job that best describes his duty is support. Sometimes he gets the shakes and the dog comes and comforts him. Joseph Modica, a 92 year old WWII vet had Barney right by his side. He was smiling big and proud of his friend. Barney was a rescue. His former owner was dying and had no one to take him so he was going to be put down. Rick saved Barney’s life with his program. The rest is history. The dogs made themselves right at home. They were the best behaved dogs. They all stayed on a big mat all evening long. It was amazing! My dog would have been at every table begging for food. They raised $3550 for Canine Angels, Inc. and every dollar goes directly to the cause. That was a great turn out tonight. If you know a disabled veteran that might need some help, have them call Rick. If you want more info go to canine-angels.net

or call 917-575-6235. As I learn more about Rick and what these dogs do, I appreciate how much they help. Take a look into it you will be amazed.

Rolling Thunder 10th Annual “Chilly” Chili Poker Run

By: Judy Bortz This dual chapter poker run took place February 18th. Wilmington Chapter NC3 was hosted by Britt Motorsports at 6431 Market St. President of Rolling Thunder NC3, Matt Wall said that almost 100 participants signed up to ride and play their cards. NC5 Chapter was hosted by Lejeune Motorsports at 955 Lejeune Blvd Jacksonville and had about the same numbers show up. Chili was served at both locations in a variety of heats. Popular opinion held that Wilmington’s “hot pot” rocked it. Saturday was a great day to ride, although it was “CHILLY” heading out, the CHILI took care of the rider’s CHILL. The ride itself was about 80 miles with 3 stops along the route to draw cards. Each chapter rode the same roads, with bikes passing each other along the route, and at the stops. Both chapters had prizes for their riders. Wilmington NC3 top prize was $500 that was won with four threes. Second place (a full house) and worst hand (9 high) both won Britt Motorsport gift cards. Raffles were held for some great prizes, and a 50/50 drawing paid out over $100. Everyone that came out had a great time. A total of $2200 was raised on the Wilmington end with the

CHDDA Cancels Fall Rally In Maggie Valley

By: Mark Infield Several years ago, after about 70 years of holding rallies in Myrtle Beach, the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association moved their spring rally to New Bern, NC. This was due to continued friction between the Horry County Council and the motorcycle community and I also suspect that there were leasing issues with the Convention Center, too. After 3 years in New Bern, where the city and its merchants welcomed the rally goers to what I thought were fun rallies, The CHDDA has decided not to hold a spring rally in May of 2012. There also used to be a spring rally in Maggie Valley in April, but early spring weather in the mountains of western NC wreaked havoc on them so they, too, were cancelled. Now we have been told that there will be no fall dealers rally in Maggie Valley in 2012. A statement released by the CHDDA stated, “Due to some issues that need to be resolved, there will not be a 2012 Maggie Valley Rally. We sincerely hope that we will be returning to Maggie Valley in 2013. To all the bikers who have supported The Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association and the Maggie Valley Rally, you have our deepest appreciation. For updates on our plans for 2013, keep checking at www.chdda.com”. It seems a shame that there will not be any dealers rallies in the Carolinas in 2012. Like my old friend Gene Lummus (RIP), past president of the dealers association, was fond of saying, “We started it all!” In the meantime, Thunder In The Smokies will still be held at the Festival Grounds in Maggie Valley on May 4-6. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson and local businesses are also making a big push to get bikers back to the Grand Strand with dates ranging from the 11th - 20th and additional events sponsored by MB H-D through the 28th. Maggie Valley Spring Bike Fest, a newcomer, will be held May 25-27. Look for their display ads in this issue for more details.

m o c . D H s k n OuterBa By: Crystal Turner February 25th it was off to the Chili Cook Off that the OBX HOG Chapter was putting on just over the bridge at OBX Harley-Davidson in Harbinger, NC. It was a perfect cold day for a chili cook off that’s for sure! The OBX HOG Chapter puts on many benefits throughout the year and the money is distributed to the different charities that they support: The Lower Currituck Food Bank, Sherriff Johnson, Currituck Toy Run, Corolla Ponies, Albemarle Hope Line, The Red Cross, and Camp Celebrate (it helps burned children). The Chili Cook Off had 19 entries! That’s a lot of chili to taste and everyone was different. There was white bean chili, venison chili, chicken chili, Dragons breath, Team Fire Ass Chili, & a sweet Chili. It came to a three way tie, so they picked 7 people to vote. The results were 1st Place went to Richard Quigley, who also won 1st Place in the sausage rodeo. His entry was a modified Dragon’s Breath Chili. 2nd Place went to my sister, Gypsie Cassias. Her’s was Hot Dog Dippin Chili. Instead of Super 8 cheese or onions she had cut hot dogs and put tooth picks in them and the Chili was Northpoint / Cherry Grove good, too (not just because she’s my sister). 1591 Hwy 17 North 3rd Place was awarded to Terry Brogden Myrtle Beach, SC 29582 for her Dragon’s Breath Chili. The 50/50 went to JP Coleson. The 843-249-7339 little boy that drew the ticket was PhilToll Free Direct 1-888-249-8819 lip Strange. Dee and Doreen were at the Trailer Parking, Security Cameras table. By Scott Wicker Warm weather helped to provide an unexpected enormous crowd looking to get great chili and show support for the Burlington Ladies Of Harley Annual Chili Cook Off at Down Home Harley-Davidson on Saturday, March 3rd. As in previous years, each of the 11 members participating served a sample portion of chili to those in attendance that made a donation to benefit the Burlington Ladies Of Harley. Baked goods were also sold making this very popular event successful as usual. Many varieties of chili were served giving a variety of different flavors to this year’s event.

When all was said and done and all the votes were counted, Mitch Oakley was named the 2012 Burlington L.O.H. Chili Bean “King”. Mitch also received a beautiful trophy and a $50 cash prize for his winning recipe. Mitch will also represent the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter at the 26th Annual Bike Show and Chili Cook-Off to be held at Shelton’s Harley-Davidson in Durham, NC on Saturday, March 17th where several of the State’s H.O.G. Chapters will bring their best entrants to compete for H.O.G. Chapter bragging rights! Congratulations to Mitch and thanks also to participants Christopher Burch, Craig Burch, Mac Bowman, Betty Tucker, Alyssa O’Sullivan, Linda Fowler, Myra Crawford, Linda Woody, Rick Murray, and Lucy Largevin for helping make this such a fun and successful event! Thanks to Down Home Harley-Davidson for hosting the event and for their warm hospitality and making everyone feel welcome. Remember! Ride Safe!

By: Whistle Where to even start?! I could give the good, the bad, or some of his ups and downs. Let’s just say that a good friend of mine is gone. We have been friends close to 20 years, I guess. We have been through the mill together. As they said in the old days, Danny was a good one to ride the river with. It was also late in his life when his true calling came to him and he took full advantage of it when he got it. Danny didn’t wait for you to show up at his church. No, no, no. He followed you right into the bar. Not a pushy salesman, but he let you know you had options, and no matter how far you had fallen, he could pull you out. Then you just had to follow him back to the church and see. Dropping by the church every once in a while there would be new faces each time and I’m not going to put any names here so all can breathe easy, but I will say, you would have not planned on them bringing biscuits for Sunday morning service. I was proud to be the groom and my lovely wife Lynn, to be his first wedding ceremony. (I did, however, have to coax him a little bit). It was absolutely the best - in a bar with about 300400 of our friends. I could go on with one story after another. The point I really want to make is all the people whose lives he touched, those he brought out of the hell they were in, those that had been sick or injured and he came up with fundraisers, the toy runs at Batchelor’s, and the good he did help to create. So to all those who have been picked up and set in the right direction, don’t ever forget who helped you. And just because he is gone, does not mean he is not still guiding you. No, no, no. He will still be following you on your bike, into that bar. Rest In Peace brother. Till we ride again on the other side.

By: Raven Southern Roadhouse in Rockingham, NC is opening up the riding season with a bang! With bike runs scheduled at least once a month they chose a pretty amazing one to do. They found a way to bring a smile to children, literally! For every $250 raised another child was able to get the surgery needed to bring a smile to their face. Good food, music, a bike show, a good cause, and great company always make for a great event and this had it all! Somewhere around 30 bikes went for a relaxing country ride for 2 hours while the band set up and the food finished cooking. Rockingham has some awesome country roads for a relaxing ride. Some folks stayed back at the bar shooting a fun game of corn hole. In the end though, about 120 folks came out to join them on a beautiful day and raised a great donation to give to this special charity. With the custom bike show the machines rolled out. First place winner Wahoo! He had his awesome drag bike he built from the ground up out there to display and take the trophy. Congratulations! Smile Train was more than helpful in supplying the tools to get the ride going. What a great organization to appreciation and be so helpful. Thanks you Roger and Tammy for making Southern Roadhouse (640 McNair Road, Rockingham, NC) that destination point and always having a great place to have a party! Oma, you got it going on girl! The runs and events you help put together have a lot of thought and heart go into each one! I will be looking forward to the next event at your location. For donations and more information go to www.smiletrain.org.

Women Who Ride

Jennifer Herriman

Hot bikes and lovely ladies just seem to go together, kinda like peanut butter and jelly. Jennifer Herriman of New Bern, NC, is one fine example of biker beauty you may see zip by you on two. Lucky for us, she slowed down long enough for us to get these smokin’ pics. Although Jennifer doesn’t yet own a bike, she does have her eye on a Yamaha R1. When asked why such a big bike, she informed me that it has to be at least 1000cc. This girl likes ‘em fast! She rides whenever she gets the chance, and quotes “adrenaline” as her favorite thing about being on a motorcycle. Anyone want to give her a ride? By the way, Jennifer gets the heartbreaker looks and love for motorcycles honest. Her mom is the office manager at Craven County Motorsports in New Bern, and is quite the biker babe herself. Special thanks to CCMS for the use of their facilities/bike for the photo shoot, and thanks to Jennifer for really getting our motors running.

Harley-Davidson Styling Chief Willie G. Davidson To Retire After 49-Year Legendary Design Career

MILWAUKEE, March 16, 2012 – After nearly 50 years as head of styling, Willie G. Davidson is retiring from HarleyDavidson April 30, 2012. Willie G., Senior Vice President and Chief Styling Officer, is widely recognized as a legend in the world of motorcycling and motorcycle design. He will continue his involvement with the company as an ambassador at motorcycle rallies and events, and through special design projects as Chief Styling Officer Emeritus. “Throughout my life, I have been truly fortunate to have the opportunity to marry my passion for design with my love for this amazing brand that runs so deeply in my veins,” Willie G. said. “What’s most rewarding has been to see the impact our motorcycles have on the lives of our customers. Everything we do in styling is based on the notion that form follows function, but both report to emotion.” Over the course of his career, Willie G., 78, built a design team at Harley-Davidson that established the company’s unrivaled leadership in custom, cruiser and touring motorcycles. Today, the styling department is led by 19-year company veteran Ray Drea, Vice President and Director of Styling, who has worked collaboratively with Willie G. in the development of numerous milestone vehicles. “It has been my privilege to work alongside many incredibly talented people at this company and I have great

confidence the future of Harley-Davidson’s design leadership will continue to grow in its pre-eminence,” Willie G. said. “I look forward to spending time with riders at rallies and to my involvement in special design projects.” “Few individuals have the kind of impact on an organization, a brand and a lifestyle that Willie G. has had,” said Keith Wandell, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. “Everyone with a love for motorcycles owes a great deal to his vision and talent, and all of us have been blessed by his presence. His legacy will continue to grow, thanks to the talent he has nurtured in the Harley-Davidson styling studio.” Willie G. has long served as ambassador of HarleyDavidson at rallies around the world – meeting riders, talking to customers, lending his famous signature to jackets, and setting an example of being close to the customer that has become one of the hallmarks of the company. Grandson of one of the company’s founders, William A. Davidson, and son of William H. Davidson, its second president, Willie G. joined the company as its first head of styling in 1963. With responsibility for the look of all HarleyDavidson motorcycles, landmark motorcycles to emerge from Willie G’s styling studio team include the Super Glide, which established the factory custom category in 1971, Low Rider, Heritage Softail Classic, Fat Boy, V-Rod and Street Glide. He is one of 13 Harley-Davidson executives who purchased the company from AMF, Inc. in 1981.

Everybody Has One

Let’s Compare An Illegal Drug Accusation/ Allegation To An Illegal Helmet Accusation. “shall wear protective headgear securely fastened on the head” I have on my person what is alleged by a cop to be an illegal drug. It is a white powdery substance in a plastic bag and on one side of the bag is written with magic marker: “Stash.” While walking down the street a cop confronted me and asked me what it was I had around my neck. One thing led to another and I was cited for illegal drug possession. The cop was under the impression that what I had in the bag was cocaine because he knew what cocaine looked like/smelled/ tasted like. So, he confiscated my “Stash”. That is he relieved me of my property because of his belief it constituted contraband and entered it into an appropriate evidence depository. Now, just what evidence will be required for my conviction of this alleged illegal drug charge? Of course, if I just plead guilty, no evidence will be required other than my plea of guilty. But, if I choose to plead not guilty, what will the government be required to produce as evidence that will “prove” my guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. What “standard” of proof will be sufficient for the judge and/or jury? Well, all the drug cases I’ve ever heard of that resulted in a conviction above the accused plea of not guilty have had to include an affirmative laboratory test indicating that the substance in question was or did contain an illegal drug. Without

65

such an affirmative and admissible test, there has been no conviction. The substance must be an illegal drug and must be appropriately laboratory tested to affirm that it truly is. Otherwise, there is no offense. So why isn’t that standard of proof the same for an allegation of wearing an illegal helmet? There’s a testing standard that applies - FMVSS 218. Why isn’t the proof required a substantiated FAIL of some part or parts of the test prescribed in FMVSS 218? Yes, perhaps the cop “knows” (or has been told) what a legal helmet looks like or should look like, but the fact that a particular helmet doesn’t fit what the cop “knows” (or anyone else “knows” for that matter - prosecutor, judge, etc.), shouldn’t be the standard of proof in a court of law. It would be interesting to cross-examine an arresting officer in a helmet case and ask him if he’d ever testified in a drug possession case of what he observed, etc., etc., and did he know of any convictions where the accused plead not guilty but was convicted simply on the officer’s testimony without the laboratory results of testing the suspected illegal drugs. That’d result in a hail of “relevance” objections by the prosecution, but it’d be worth a try. Anyway, my brain accosted me with all this one night here recently while I was attempting to fall asleep. I apologize for rambling on with this. Burl Bolton

PORTSMOUTH, VA, MARCH 5, 2012: Last month, dealers from across the country attended the powersports industries longest running and most prestigious retail competition, the Dealernews Top 100 award ceremony in Indianapolis, IN. Out of an estimated 15,000 powersport retail locations, Bayside Harley-Davidson received the only awards handed out in Central and Southeastern Virginia. They were recognized as a Top 100 Powersport Dealer in North America and were runner up for “Best Employee Incentives” other wise known as Best Place To Work. Maurice Slaughter, owner, states that both accolades are very prestigious but wants to reiterate that one of the most important aspects of any business is your associates. Just the fact they we were recognized says a lot on how we treat our staff and how the little things you do for them mean a lot and bring out the best in them. Bayside Harley-Davidson was recognized because of the incentive programs and the morale boosting activities that they do. Kevin Johnson, President and Chief Operating Officer, said the associates love when we close the store once a year for a dealership ride where all can either ride or drive to a selected establishment for lunch and then back to the store. The route is usually around 150-200 miles. Bayside also has a biker build off competition between the departments where they get to add parts and accessories to a new Harley. The winner is chosen in two categories: The best looking and the first one that sells. Prizes have been dinner and a movie, indoor cart racing and other fun activities in an after work environment. The Management also recognizes an Associate each month as the best. They receive a paid day off, a parking spot, gift certificate to a local restaurant, and a gift from the owner Maurice Slaughter, which varies month to month. Mr. Slaughter is also very proud to have in place a 401K plan, profit sharing and a medical benefits package. Bayside Harley-Davidson is located at 2211 Frederick Boulevard in Portsmouth, VA. Motorcycle Friendly Lodging In The Beautiful Smoky Mountains

By: WildThing Maggie Valley, North Carolina is a haven for two wheel tourists in the beautiful mountains of the western part of the state. At the end of the day, everyone looks for a nice place to stay for the evening. If you are like me, and don’t require the Taj Mahal, but appreciate a clean room with a comfy bed, then Applecover Inn, located at 4077 Soco Road, near the center of Maggie fits the bill to a ‘T’. The added ingredients are very reasonable rates and very friendly owners, Derrick and Amy Cole. The icing on this cake is Applecover Inn is very biker friendly and run by motorcycle enthusiasts. As you pull in the driveway, you can’t help but notice the clean white exterior with bright red trim and the green metal roof. The red and white theme is continued with the planters full of red and white begonias and impatiens. The wrap around porch is littered with rocking chairs where friendly guests can while away an afternoon, visiting with the newcomers. Derrick is on hand to welcome you and help you get settled in, is a great tour guide, and knows all the good restaurants and activities in the area. There are several different sizes and styles of rooms at the Applecover, so you are sure to find one to suit you and Applecover Inn’s prices are very reasonable. Take note of the large fire pit with its’ circle of rocking chairs and you mentally make plans to occupy one as soon as the sun goes down. As an added feature, they have completely renovated their mess hall with new windows, tile floors, new kitchen area, air conditioning, and a 50” flat panel television. It will seat up to 40 people. They have a new covered patio where the grills are, and extra seating for another 24 folks. It is perfect for get-togethers for family and/or friends. Mark and I have been staying at Applecover Inn with Derrick and Amy every spring and fall for several years and have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. You couldn’t ask for anything better than staying at a biker friendly motel that plays host to lots of different groups of riders, with great mountain riding close by to enjoy, with nice clean rooms at reasonable rates. You will be glad you did! Definitely Full Throttle approved. Check out www.ApplecoverInn.com for more information.

Durham HOG 26th Annual Bike Show And Chili Cook Off

L-R Durham HOG Director, Stan Parker, presents Best of Show trophy to Roger Fowler By: Kathy Johnson I think the Durham HOG Bike Show and Chili Cook Off kicks off the riding season for everyone. This year the event was held on March 17th. It is always the time you get to see a lot of people you have not seen through the winter. For the 3rd year in a row they had the CROSSOVERDRIVE band playing good mix of rock and blues. As always they grill up hot dogs for the crowd just in case the chili has not filled you up. Well, I will satisfy your curiosity. This year there were seven entrees in the contest. I am not sure how many times they have won but, yes, the Burlington HOG Chapter won the chili contest again! Well, people don’t give up you can try again next year. I had the chance to talk with Jenny McKay who is the program director for Rider’s Edge and she said they signed up quite a few people for classes that day. They also sold quite a few bikes that day. You can tell that warm weather has people thinking about getting some miles behind them. Well, I will not make you wait any longer for your trophy results starting with H-D Touring - Stock W/Tour Pak: 1st Place - Ray Little, 2nd Place - Bobby Jones. H-D Touring - Stock W/O Tour Pak: 1st Place - Roger Fowler, 2nd Place - Larry Prater. Sportster: 1st Place - Charlie Smith, 2nd Place - Becky Padilla. FX & Dyna Rubber Mount: 1st Place - Bob Ferguson, 2nd Place - Craig Burch. FX Ridged Mount: 1st Place - Dan Roberts, 2nd Place - Robby Robbins. FL Ridged Mount: 1st Place - Roger Fowler, 2nd Place - Fred Yancey. Modified Harley: 1st Place - Rick Denby, 2nd Place - Ron Biscotti. V-Rod: 1st Place - James Trotton. Sport Bike: 1st Place - Rodney Lee Rossling. Antique (1990 or older): 1st Place - Ken Hall. Other V Twin: 1st Place - Richie Hogan. Factory Trike: 1st Place - Mike Hunt. Modified Trike: 1st Place - Ken Gregory. And Best In Show: Roger Fowler. Congratulations to all! This year’s winner of the 2012 HD Sportster 883 SuperLow was David Hyde of Durham. David was not present, but you know that was money well spent. When they did get up with David, he opted for the $5000 cash instead of the Sportster 883 SuperLow. Durham HOG with Shelton’s H-D of Durham puts on a great event every year. They appreciate everyone coming out and all their support. If you missed this year’s Bike Show and Chili Cook Off make plans for next year. In the mean time, drop by Shelton’s Harley-Davidson at 300 Muldee Street in Durham and check them out. They just might have the bike or genuine H-D accessory that you need.

Spokes & Jokes

77

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

In Florida, an atheist created a case against Easter and Passover Holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians and Jews and observances of their holy days. The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days. The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, “Case dismissed!” The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, “Your honor, How can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays...” The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, “But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant.” The lawyer said, “ Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists.” The judge said, “The calendar says April 1st is April Fool’s Day. Psalm 14:1 states, ‘The fool says in his heart, there is no God.’ Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that, if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned...”

At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 9-year- old baseball players aside and asked, “Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?” The little boy nodded in the affirmative. “Do you understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a team?” The little boy nodded yes. “So,” the coach continued, “I’m sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn’t argue, curse, attack the umpire, or call him a pecker-head. Do you understand all that?” The little boy nodded again. He continued, “And when I take you out of the game so another boy gets a chance to play, it’s not good sportsmanship to call your coach ‘a dumb ***’ is it?” Again, the little boy nodded. “Good,” said the coach. “Now go over there and explain all that to your grandmother.” The local bar was so sure that its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a standing $1000 bet: The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice out would win the money. Many longshoremen, professional wrestlers and other people had tried over

time, but nobody could do it. One day this scrawny little man came in, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit, and said in a tiny, squeaky voice, “I’d like to try the bet.” After the laughter had died down, the bartender agreed, grabbed a lemon, and squeezed away. Then he handed the dried, wrinkled remains of the rind to the little man. But the crowd’s laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and SIX drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the $1000, and asked the little man, “What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a weight lifter, or what?” The man replied, “I work for the IRS.” A man dies and goes to heaven. Of course, St. Peter meets him at the pearly gates. St. Peter says, “Here’s how it works. You need 100 points to make it into heaven. You tell me all the good things you’ve done, and I give you a certain number of points for each item, depending on how good it was. When you reach 100 points, you get in.” “Okay,” the man says, “I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, even in my heart.” “That’s wonderful,” says St. Peter, “that’s worth three points!” “Three points?” he says. “Well, I attended church all my life and supported its ministry with my tithe and service.” “Terrific!” says St. Peter. “That’s certainly worth a point.” “One point!?!!” “I started a soup kitchen in my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans.” “Fantastic, that’s good for two more points,” he says. “Two points!?!!” Exasperated, the man cries. “At this rate the only way I’ll get into heaven is by the grace of God.” “Bingo!”, St Peter exclaimed, That’s good for 100 points! Come on in!” It’s a slow day in the small town of Pumphandle and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit. A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night. As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op. The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who

has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her “services” on credit. The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner. The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything. At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves. No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town now thinks that they are out of debt and there is a false atmosphere of optimism and glee. And that, my friends, is how a “stimulus package” works!

A modern day cowboy named Bob has spent many days crossing the South Dakota prairies without water. His horse had already died of thirst. He’s crawling along the dusty ground, certain that he has breathed his last breath, when all of a sudden he sees an object sticking out of the ground several yards ahead of him. He crawls to the object, pulls it out of the ground and discovers what looks to be an old briefcase. He opens it and out pops a genie named Patty. But she is no ordinary genie. She is wearing an IRS ID badge and a dull grey outfit. There’s a calculator in her pocketbook. She has a pencil tucked behind one ear. “Well, cowboy,” says the genie, “You know how I work.... You have three wishes.” “I’m not falling for this,” said the cowboy, “I’m not going to trust an IRS genie.” “What do you have to lose? You’ve got no transportation, and it looks like you’re a goner anyway!” The cowboy thinks about this for a minute and decides that the genie is right. “OK! I wish I were along side a lush spring with plenty of food and drink.” ***POOF*** the cowboy finds himself beside the most beautiful spring he has ever seen, and he’s surrounded with jugs of wine and platters of delicacies. “OK, cowpoke, what’s your second wish?” “My second wish is that I was rich beyond my wildest dreams.” ** *POOF*** the cowboy finds himself surrounded by treasure chests filled with rare gold coins and precious gems. “OK, cowpuncher, you have just one more wish. Better make it a good one!” After thinking for a few minutes, the cowboy says, “I wish that no matter where I go, beautiful women will want and need me.” ***POOF*** He was turned into a tampon. Moral of the story: If the U.S. government offers to help you, there’s going to be a string attached.

FEDERAL HIGHWAY BILL PROGRESSES The U.S. Senate has approved its version of a federal highway appropriations measure (S.1813, “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century” or MAP-21) by a vote of 74-22 on March 14, and the $109 billion highway bill includes motorcycle safety funding for states and would bar federal funds from being used to conduct motorcycle-only checkpoints. The measure now goes to the House of Representatives for further action, where a similar measure is also being considered (H.R. 7, the “American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act of 2012”). Both bills contain motorcycle safety program funding and both would prohibit motorcycle-exclusive roadblocks, and neither version has any anti-motorcycle provisions, but it’s unclear if the House will take up the Senate bill or advance their own legislation. MORE STATES MOVE TO BAN MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS While Congress continues to consider passing a prohibition on motorcycle-only roadside “safety checkpoints” by halting federal funding, several states are moving forward with their own laws to ban the practice. New Hampshire and North Carolina have both passed such legislation, and Virginia has become the latest state to pass a bill to bar law enforcement agencies from setting up safety checks that only stop motorcycles for inspection. Following a motorcycle-only checkpoint set up during last year’s Rolling Thunder POW/MIA rally en route to Washington, D.C. over Memorial Day weekend, Delegate C. Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) introduced H.B.187, which passed and was signed into law on Feb. 28 by Governor Bob McDonnell. Most recently, New Jersey introduced companion bills in the Senate (S-1685) and the Assembly (A-508) to prohibit police from establishing checkpoints limited to certain types of vehicles and would require that all checkpoints include all types of vehicles. Calling motorcycle-only checkpoints discriminatory and unconstitutional, ABATE of California is likewise pushing a bill (AB-1047) that would ban state and federal funding of biker barricades. According to ABATE Lobbyist Jim Lombardo, “We passed out of the Assembly and are awaiting a hearing in the Senate Transportation Committee, probably next month, and then on to Governor Brown.” Meanwhile on the legal front, New York A.I.M. (Aid to Injured Motorcyclists) Attorney Mitch Proner told the Associated Press that he is preparing to appeal a federal court decision upholding the constitutionality of motorcycle roadblocks in N.Y., and the issue may eventually be heard before the U.S. Supreme Court.
