’m over this cold weather. we’ve had our share of frigid temps and unintentional frosty balls rides. We’ve even seen two separate snow “storms”. That’s ENOUGH! The good news is, spring is coming, as a matter of fact, you can’t stop it! It’s February and there are plenty of biker friendly haunts you can hang out in and rides you can go on, but we are looking forward to RALLY SEASON! Daytona Bike Week starts February 28th, Outer Banks Bike Week starts April 19th and Myrtle Beach Bike Week starts May 9th. That means that you still have time to take advantage of some great service specials. Flip through the pages of the 319th issue of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, pick out a great service rate, service special or a brand new 2025 model motorcycle from our fine advertisers. If you took advantage of the cold weather and have already dialed in your ride for spring, then check out the Cruisin’ Calendar for some rides and parties. We’ve Got You Covered!

The February issue features the All Harley World Shootout and the all the drag racing action of their 2025 schedule. Fans, these are mini rallies based around some of the best drag racing on the east coast. Make your plans now and get out to one of these events! AHWS promoter Paul Watson will even have a Drag Racing Expo at the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Custom Bike Show on February 1st! Come check out 200 custom motorcycles, tons of vendors, live music, tattoos, pinstriping, fashion shows and more! This is our 3rd Annual bike show at the Greensboro Complex in Greensboro, NC and you do not want to miss it! But if you do, you will be able to read about it in next month’s magazine.

The All Harley World Shoot Out Roars Back For 2025!

Fans of The All Harley World Shootout, the sponsors and I want to thank you for making the 2024 season one of our best yet. Before we go any further, I must let our fans know who our World Champions are. 2025 AHWS Race Schedule is posted, and we are excited with every venue we are at. Very excited to be partnering up with Jeff Miles at Darlington Dragway this year. Jeff said, “It will be the Battle of the Carolinas for sure”. The AHWS was in Darlington 2021, and it was a great event. Nitro’s ruled that night. Janette Thornley was putting them on the trailer. All Buddy Foss could do was smile at his lovely wife’s performance. The Hurricane took us out for our Ohio Kil-Kare Raceway “North vs South” event. I believe this will be one of our largest events of the season. Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas, Indiana, West Virgina, Pennsylvania here we come. Jason Crisp and Joe Perry from the South, vs Keith Alan Evans and Josh Engle from the North. Who will have bragging rights for a year? Turbo Town’s Jeremy Williamson, Shannon Poor, and Rick Hunnicut vs G Force Racing’s Dwayne Gee, Jerick Espinal, and Khole Sellers. A heavyweight match up you can only dream of. Can’t wait to be spectator.

Hold up, I have something for our season opener at our Spring Nationals at Farmington Dragway on April 11/12. We have Jeff Whitakers Nitro Harley with Jay Beasley as the Pilot running against, not just any racer, but the President and CEO of East Coast Fuelers himself Mr. Jim Cummings. He is bringing his National Champion Dragster and will face off against Jeff and Jay with the Nitro. Fans this is NOT a joke it is happening at our first event. Smokin HarleyDavidson is sponsoring 2 out of 3 races. Blake, Smokin HD’s owner, is all in with JLW Racing. Wait… he has help! That JLW Nitro has Hawaya Racings powerplant and Johnny Vickers has also jumped on board with that Nitro Harley team. Jim Cummings isn’t alone though. He has his army of East Coast Fuelers backing him, but Impex Auto has thrown their name in the hat sponsoring the Dragster. Steve West of Impex says he is in the car business and must support the 4 wheels. This is going to be one for the ages. More and I mean a lot more to come on this history making event.

I would like to thank all the Harley-Davidson Dealerships that are involved with the AHWS this season. We have always been supported, and we are thankful no doubt. Harley-Davidson is producing some bikes that can roll right off the dealership floor and can be taken straight to the track. That CVO ST has some crazy horsepower and torque numbers. What makes me feel great is the younger generation is purchasing Harley’s like they won’t exist anymore. That’s very exciting for the brand and if you are like me, Harley blood runs through my veins.

The AHWS has many partners, and I am eager to talk about the collaboration we have with East Coast Fuelers for season 2025. You know we never refer to our events as races. They are events! I love the Blown Alcohol Supercharged Front engine old skool Fuel Altered cars. These cars are my

Freezing Your Brass Nuts Off To Bring In The New Year 10TH Annual CVMA Brass Nuts Ride

anuary 1st saw us bring in a new year and it also saw the Combat Veteran Motorcycle Association (CVMA), chapter 15-1, The All American Chapter, in Fayetteville hold their 10th annual Brass Nuts ride. On January 1, we were blessed with a lovely, sunny day and the temps were in the high 40s. The event featured a roughly 30 mile ride around Fayetteville, commonly known as FayetteNam (IYKYK), great music, a chili cookoff, a tattoo artist, a bikini bike wash and assorted vendors selling their wares.

Nearly 300 bikes and even more riders were in attendance. There was a large gathering of other chapters as well as other bike groups and lone wolves from around the region, from as far away as Wilmington. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and excitement, with everyone commenting on how many there were there that day, old military stories and what kind of upgrades are planned for the new year for their bikes.

This year’s event was held in honor of Jake “Roadie” Lucko, who passed only 10 days prior to this event. He was a retired Marine, husband, father and road captain for the group.

His ashes took his final ride with his flag, family friend and the Chapter Commander, Jody “Snakebit” Hawkins, leading the way. He will be forever remembered by the group and has been added to their memorial wall to honor his memory.

The chili cookoff saw 8 contestants present various kinds of chilis from tomatoey to hot and spicy and several in between. and was won by Cynthia Hart with her now award winning chili. She got a $100 gift card to Ft Bragg Harley and a large gift basket of assorted goodies.

The bikini girls were in fine form, braving the cold, washing and polishing bikes, leaving no crack or crevice’s unwashed, because no one wants a dirty crevice. The enthusiasm that these ladies showed, certainly kept everyone’s interest as they cleaned, buffed and polished up many bikes that day.

Troy Duke from Old Street Tattoo was the tattoo artist on hand that day and I saw many adding to their ink that day. The sound of his needle permeated the air of the VFW hall all afternoon.

Next January 1, if you’re itching to get out for a ride, bundle up and come down to Fayetteville for the next Brass Nuts ride. If you’re an honorably discharged military veteran, combat or otherwise, I encourage you to make the ride next year or any of the other rides this group holds throughout the year and inquire about becoming a member. The CVMA is a motorcycle group comprised of military (all branches) combat veterans, non-combat veterans and their spouses and supporters. The camaraderie and fellowship offered by these veterans to other veterans is, in my opinion, the cornerstone of the organization. Getting out in the wind is therapy from the everyday problems, but doing with guys and gals that you have shared perhaps the most difficult situations anyone has ever had to survive, brings another level of mind easing comfort. I am a vet but not a member yet and the brother and sisterhood I have experienced from this group, who knows what you went through as a service member, will brighten your spirits and help you push through your everyday struggles.

I Am Boone

was born and raised in durham, nc where i was taught to truly listen, appreciate, and help others.

I spent over 20 years in the car business before transitioning to motorcycle sales. There, I found that I could help people find and develop the passion we both share – riding motorcycles! I started riding dirt bikes at age 5 and transitioned to the street on a Nighthawk 650 as soon as I got my license at 16.

For over 8 years, fulfillment for me didn’t only come from a paycheck. Being able to help people from all walks of life get on motorcycles that fit them and their individual needs both physically and financially also gave me satisfaction and motivation.

My life was then unexpectedly turned upside down. I found that I needed a change, and through tragedy, I ultimately decided to take a leap and try to fulfill my dream that had been a long time coming. So I, poured sweat equity into something I could make and call my own and started feeling whole again. In April 2024, the doors of Boone MotorCo opened for the first time. The business is a team operation.

My son Scott (aka “Boonior”) grew to love motorcycles at a young age watching and riding with me. He too started offroad at age 5 and his first street bike was a Sportster Nightster. He started working in retail, but quickly followed the path to working with motorcycles as well. Spending time in both the Harley environment as well as with metric bikes helped him build a diverse foundation. Scott currently rides a 2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special.

Conner started riding dirt bikes at age 5 and his first street bike was a 1985 Honda Magna. He relocated to North Carolina from Washington State. He gained extensive knowledge through riding and working on his own bikes, as well as years of experience in parts and service work. Conner currently rides a 2022 Harley-Davidson Road Glide.

Ryan has been working with bikes since he started riding dirt bikes as a kid, and at 21 he got a Kawasaki Vulcan 800. He is now a MMI certified technician with over 5 years of dealership experience. Ryan currently rides a 2003 HarleyDavidson Anniversary Superglide.

Together, we are Boone MotorCo.

Down & Dirty American Performance Making All Your Motorcycle Dreams Come True

was in down & dirty american performance the other day since I’m fixin’ to take my Big Jap Bike there for some major service. Yep, this shop can fix all kinds of motorcycles.

The focus for about six years has been Harley-Davidsons. But the shop has grown from a single unit in a building to a nice large multi-building facility. The crew at Down & Dirty can now do everything a biker needs, from minor service to complete bike builds or sell you a nice bike. They have added a shop for Metric Bikes.

I won’t rehash Dewey, Joey and Arnold’s history. Y’all have read that before and got to know the D&D Crew the last few years. We talked about what the shop does now for happy customers. Build and maintain cool motorcycles.

I’ve known Dewey for several years as he gained experience from an H-D dealership to years successfully independent. D&D American Performance now has a new 5000 SF building with showroom and can be your one shop for everything – NC inspections, accessories, apparel, helmets, service to performance builds and always has 20% off tires.

We talked about a great deal they have for a Winter Hop Up on your new Milwaukee-Eight Harley-Davidson.

“The M-8 is one the best motors Harley has ever made,”Dewey said. “When it comes to making additional horsepower, the M-8 can be a bargain. The price you’re paying to get those numbers with just a cam job versus what you would pay on an Evo or Twin Cam for the same numbers is a crazy difference.”

“Back in the day, building Twin Cams you could spend up to $10,000 on a monster build to get 130 horsepower and torque. Now we install a stock Base Circle cam with stock springs and heads and get an easy 120 horsepower. Did one the other day. All I did was replace the cam and the plastic intake with a metal one. With a good two into one exhaust and he had a strong 120 horsepower and 130 foot pounds of torque,” he said. And that horsepower increase only cost $2,700.

but they aren’t doing half the stuff we are for the customer for that price. We’re doing the cam, lifters and adjustable pushrods. We replace the plastic lifter cuffs with S&S.”

Dewey doesn’t just stick in a new cam. He checks the entire valvetrain and upgrades the necessary parts. Replace some of those original plastic parts such as the intake manifold.

“We do a Power Vision tune and full dyno run so the customer knows exactly what they have when they twist the throttle,” he said.

Dewey praises new Harley-Davidson Motorcycles as being well made machines. The M-8 bikes are awesome, but they can be improved. Hey, all my life Harley has sold us new bikes that were basically templates for us to customize. He showed me a really nice El Diablo (it is for sale) that is an example of how D&D can build engines with lots more horsepower and customize bikes.

“Look at that El Diablo. It’s making 150 horsepower and 150 torque. That is the epitome of what we can do. Big bore kit, welded and trued crank, bigger heads, intake and throttle body, pipes and back cut transmission.”

“Guys come in and say they want to build their motor. I ask what’s your budget? How far down that Rabbit Hole do you want to go. We can go up to 143 cubic inches with two-inch pipes and crazy heads. How far do you want to go to chase that horsepower number?” Dewey asks.

D&D does a lot more than performance builds. Their customers are riding some of the coolest machines in town. I’m looking forward to seeing the Road King they customized with a Low Rider ST fairing. Dewey uses – Advanblack fairings and bags and such to create bikes folks go crazy over. D&D installs a fender, saddlebag side cover kit that mimics the look of the new CVO.

“From oil changes to crazy customized bikes. People come in and ask, ‘What can you do,’ I ask what do you want because we can make it happen.” With Dewey’s connections across the motorcycle business that’s true.

But I was telling y’all that D&D American Performance can work on Metric Bikes too. They are about to get my 1982 Honda CB 900 Custom for some serious service. This Shovelhead Guy can’t adjust that dual cam 16-valve shim and bucket valvetrain nor fix those four giant gas suckers that feed the fun motor. Arnold is gonna have me winding her close to that 10,000 RPM redline soon. Don’t worry my Big Japanese Girlfriend is getting new Progressive Suspension and tires too.

Arnold is the Metric Mechanic, graduating from Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Florida in 1995. He has worked at a Yamaha/Suzuki dealer and is a Honda Certified Master Mechanic specializing in performance upgrades.

After years working in major dealerships and like so many mechanics, he was fixing bikes at this house shop.

“I was on my way to another shop with some wheels needing tires mounted and stopped here first. See if they would do it. We hit it off good and soon Dewey was sending me customers since they didn’t work on imported bikes,” Arnold said.

“It got to the point that more folks wanted me to work on their bikes and my shop wasn’t big enough. They rented me one of the small buildings on this property and I got to work. Eventually Joey and Dewey came over said they like what I was doing and we merged the shops,” he said.

Now D&D American Performance can service all makes of motorcycles. Arnold specializes in Japanese bikes but can service European bikes as well. Just like with the Harleys, D&D can now provide complete engine to body to tires work for imports.

“We can do anything you need for metric motorcycles from build engines from the crank up to bolt on the latest cool sport bike accessories. We can get and install custom plastics and wheels. Spread the word to the Sport Bike folks since there aren’t many shops doing this for them,” Arnold said.

The friendly atmosphere at D&D makes you smile when Joey answers the phone, “D&D American Performance, where all your hopes and dreams come true.”

Joey is the guy you meet when you come in the front door. His background is sales and will work with you to plan the service or upgrades you need for your bike. Joey is always ready to make you a great deal on your next motorcycle.

He is the man to see in Mooresville if you want a previously loved motorcycle. Not just Harleys either. There was a Suzuki V-Strom on the floor that would be so much fun on the mountain fire trails. Joey has a GSX Sport Tour model for sale with fitted bags that could get you to the Florida Keys in

record time.

Buyers must be careful. It seems these days that lots of places have Used Harleys for sale. Corner car lots and the tractor dealer have taken them as trades and need to sell.

Joey is proud that the pre-owned bikes they sell, Harleys and Metrics, are good machines for a good price. No auction junk with a bad past. They make sure you are buying a bike that is ready to ride and enjoy. Joey can have you riding with easy financing and no dealer fees.

“When you buy a vehicle you want it to last. You are investing in a luxury item to have fun with. If you are going to spend money on it make sure it is going to last you. Maintain and take care of it,” Joey said.

“There are places selling used bikes that they don’t inspect. Just put a price tag on it to sell. Then they put people in horrible finance deals they can’t get out of. Soon they are upside down on the value of the bike and how much they owe on it.”

“Every bike we have for sale was locally owned. They all came from the first or second owner and were well maintained. The owners show me proof they took care of the bike,” he said.

D&D makes sure they are selling you a good machine ready to ride without problems. They go over the bikes thoroughly before offering for sale. These guys know the common issues on certain bikes and fix them.

“An example is the early Twin Cam engines with tensioner problems. If a bike comes in here to be sold and it is beautiful, low miles, well-maintained but has the original chain tensioner, we are going to upgrade the cam and chain and tensioner before we sell it.”

“Our customers don’t come back with problems. They come back for routine service, upgrades and to have a beer and hang out,” he said.

Joey cares about his customers personally too. He has finance options to help you afford that cool new-to-you machine. And he takes the time to educate folks on how buying a

We try to be under average retail and try to get people into good loans so in a year or two they aren’t upside down on the bike’s value,” Joey said.

As D&D grows, they have recently hired Erika as Marketing Director. So expect more parties at the shop. D&D has always been a supporter of local bike nights so y’all are gonna see Erika out there promoting D&D American Performance.

Erika joined the D&D family in December after working as the Marketing Coordinator at an H-D Dealership. “I started out as a photographer, but I started taking pictures for the Guardians of the Children and it opened up a whole new world for me. I’ve been in the motorcycle business for about a year now doing social media marketing and events. I feel blessed to be able to combine my love of the biker community and photography and turn it into a career.”

Erika went on to say, “I’m excited to represent D&D as we participate in other folks’ events such as the Mooresville Throttle Thursdays. I have several events in the works as well and I’m looking forward to hosting our own bike nights here at the shop this Summer.”

Joe Smith Day At Pine Tree Tavern

othing is better than a crowded bar on a cold day and this was the coldest day of the year, even if it was only January 4th. It was 35 at 1pm and with the windchill bringing the temperature to fuc%ing cold. But here’s the thing, it was Joe Smith Day at Pine Tree Tavern and even though the Legend was turning 84 there’s a good chance that he may ride out to the celebration. I’m sure as hell not taking a chance of showing up in a cage if Joe rode up! So, I fired up the ol Panhead and my new heated socks and gloves and rode up to the Pine Tree Tavern in Winston-Salem. The atmosphere in side of Pine Tree was simply electric. There is something about coming in out of the cold and into a warm bar full of friends who are drinking and singing along with the band. Every year Joe Smith Day is a huge party, and the bar gets jammed with

Joe’s friends, family and admirers come to pay their respects to Joe. For many of us it’s the kick-off of the year and the party always goes hard. Art and Lori, the gracious proprietors of Pine Tree Tavern and this annual party go all out and for Joe with live music and free food. This year it was Art’s chili and cornbread along with Lori’s Potato Soup and cornbread that was served up for party goers. The kitchen at the Tree is always top notch.

There is always a commemorative Joe Smith T-Shirt marking the occasion. Joe has scratched his name into the bathroom mirror of nearly all the biker bars in the nation and each year he spends most of his day signing these shirts, tits, hats and anything else that needs signing! In between signing Joe paused for pictures and accepted free drinks and presents. My dude, I can only hope I’m having birthdays like this when I’m 84. But I guess that just is a continuation of Joe’s lifestyle of seven decades of riding across the country, hitting all the rallies, parties and living the life we all dream of.

The bar was slam packed and down in front of the bar where Joe was sitting was a constant jam of people. Even though it was a cold day, the outside deck and the yard of Pine Tree Tavern was hoping too. A couple burn barrels and bullshit stories were keeping that party warm. There was a decent amount of motorcycle traffic all day and the auxiliary parking lots were full of cages. The band was still rocking at 4pm, when they stopped to help sing happy birthday to Joe. A cake with Joe’s photo on it was brought out of the kitchen and Joe blew out the candles. Cupcakes were passed around, the band kicked back up and the party raged on. Happy Birthday, Joe!

If you missed out on this party, you definitely missed a barn burner, but there is a good chance that if you stop by Pine Tree Tavern, you’ll find the World Famous Joe Smith sitting at his table drinking a Busch Light. If you see him and there

is an available seat, hang out for a bit and listen to Joe. He’s not only a cool old biker, but he’s got all the stories to back his reputation up, plus a few good jokes. Hours will pass like minutes and the suds will go down easy. Joe is a hell of a good guy, and I’m honored every year to stop by and celebrate his birthday with him. Big thanks to Art and Lori and the staff of Pine Tree Tavern for this putting on this shindig. As mentioned, they have killer weekly food and drink specials, live music and it’s always a great place to put down your kickstand.

Antique Motorcycle Club of America Blue Ridge Chapter Winter Meeting

ot a few inches of snow in newton so i was late getting out to the Antique Motorcycle Club of America Blue Ridge Chapter Winter Meeting the middle of January. The parking lot was filling up as members arrived for the Chili and Dessert Contest before the meeting.

Rick and Janet Allen host the Winter Meeting at their place near Stanfield, NC. We meet at the shop where Rick and Ramsey store and maintain their awesome collection of antique Harleys and Indians. Folks arrive early to walk the shop checking out the old machines. I wish those bikes could tell their stories. I want a time machine to meet the riders who built and loved those bikes. Hear their stories.

There were 18 pots of chili around the wall in Rick’s shop, so it was hard to pick a favorite. Lots of classic chilis. Some “unique” from White Chicken Chili to Jambalaya Chili.

Carroll Mooneyham and Jim Bright won the Chili Contest. There were lots of great chili pots so I ain’t sure which was Carroll’s. Oh no a table full of awesome desserts that I shouldn’t have, but…. I did. Annie Russo’s Tres Leches Cake was great and took the Dessert trophy. I think I tried at least three of the five or six kinds of deviled eggs spread out on the bike lift.

At the meeting we talked about 2025 events coming up, Denton and more. The chapter hosts rides in the Carolina and Virginia mountains during the Summer and participates in National Road Rides too.

Mike Russo is the Denton Meet Director and announced the theme this year is Sidecars.

“We will host the Southern National Meet at Denton Farm Park October 10-11 and run the usual schedule this year. Vendors start arriving Thursday. Friday, we plan a supper and band. Saturday is the big day with the Bike Show,” Mike said.

I think there were almost 140 folks in Rick and Ramsey’s Garage. Folks from other AMCA chapters were there. We re-elected Rick chapter president as well as keeping the rest of the officers. If you are into old motorcycles, you should be an AMCA Member and join the Blue Ridge Chapter. Go to blueridgeamca.org and get in touch with Larry. He’ll sign you up and get you in the information loop for rides and parties.

After the meeting I rolled out a nice old Harley Police Side Car rig for some photos. Always a new machine at Rick’s that can lead to a bike story.

The Greatest Commandment

February is centered around Valentines Day. According to the National Retail Federation 2023 consumer spending for Valentines Day was $25.9 billion dollars. Madison Avenue hopes we believe the true measure of how much we love our valentine is how much we spend. Compared to what God’s love for us cost, this is nothing.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus demonstrated his love for us by departing Heaven to live among us for 33 sinless years and then sacrifice himself to pay full price for our sins. There is a Christmas song recognizing on Jesus’ birthday we receive the gift. Nothing could ever be more true. We’ll never understand or appreciate the love the God has for us. We are blessed with such a remarkable overflow of his love that it allows us to share it with others. The religious leaders were doing everything they could think of to stop Jesus. They had what would today be a lawyer question him. Here is the scripture concerning this conversation.

Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all

your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

That sounds nice and simple to understand. There is an ole saying that speaks directly to this matter. “To love the world is no chore, my problem is with the guy next door.”

Luke 6:32 “But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. Loving the people we like is easy but as we can clearly see that is not our mission. February is the secular month of love with Valentines Day front and center. I want to encourage us all to make a special effort to reach out to a person in our life that requires extra effort on our part to show them love. In God’s eyes we are all neighbors, and we should care for others the same as we care for ourselves. This is not possible without Jesus in your life. If you have never invited Jesus into your life as your Savior, please take care of that today. There is nothing else you can do that will matter 200 years from now. 200 years from now nothing else will matter.

From The Bitch Pad Miles & Miles of Smiles! – Part 2

oneybun and i left the house July 28th and arrived back home September 2nd. We traveled through 19 states and 4 provinces, with a temperature range from as low as 39.2°F (4°C) to as high as 116.6°F (47°C). Total miles: 7,851.6 (12,635.9 kms)!

A Trip of a Lifetime!

Sun up and we were packing the bike. It was August and still “summer” in Canada, but it can get chilly at times, so we piled on the layers. HoneyBun kept a close eye on the doppler to plan our day, and sometimes our route was recalculated to avoid a storm or traffic snarls. He has definitely got “the knack”.

~ Balls to the Wall ~

We travelled from the family farm in Southern Manitoba to the Trans-Canada Highway aka the #1, which runs the entire length of the country, coast to coast, having four lanes for most of it. I still marvel at the BIG sky. Seeing a sunflower field in full bloom is a site to behold; HoneyBun’s Pop was the first in his area to plant them. We were in the province of Saskatchewan in a blink. Canadians advise travellers to “set cruise and have a nap”. Haha! “Lots of land, a straight road and not much to see.” Well, I beg to differ; I stayed awake just to see if the rumors were true. After all, it was my job to document, via pictures, our grand journey. We zipped passed grasslands and forests, gently rolling slopes and crops of canola, flax, barley, wheat and oats. This province is considered “Canada’s Breadbasket”. The ride was truly breathtaking! Sasketchewan also boasts the world’s largest potash reserves. No! That is not snow (see photo)! Whew! We flew by grain elevators, cows, and trains on a track that runs alongside the highway. We planned a lunch stop in the town of Indian Head (just in time to fuel up) with a former colleague and friend from another life. I am so glad we made the effort; we had such a nice visit, then back on the road. At some point along the way, we began getting inundated with BIG juicy bugs. I have no idea what they were before they splatted yellow goo on our windshield. What a mess! Grasshoppers, maybe?

Tom swears by a product called F11 to not only remove the crud, but to provide a protective layer for an easier scrub next time (yes, it is kept in the saddlebag with the tools). We made our way into Alberta, with a goal to reach Diamond Valley (a town at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains) to visit more family, for two nights; it was a 13+ hour jaunt in total. In that time, the sun warmed us up, then became hot, so the layers came off and were bungied on the back. Alberta has everything from mountains to prairies to desert badlands and vast coniferous forests. The province is also rich in oil, with over 2,600 pumpjacks dotting the terrain; Alberta has one of the largest oil deposits on the planet. Luvin’ all the family time. So much to catch up on and stories to tell. Far too soon, it was time, once again, to hit the road. We had another long day in

the saddle to reach Penticton, British Columbia, taking the Kananaskis Trail through The Rockies. I tell ya, it was chilly! Only 4 degrees Celcius (39.2 F)! The only upside was there were no bugs in sight. The sun did not warm me up til near noon. Tom stopped to put my icy cold fingers on the heated grips (appreciated all the amenities). This part of the journey was all WOW! The pictures just don’t do it justice. Honestly, if you’ve never been out this way, add it to your Bucket List. Seriously! We stopped for fuel and coffee in Canmore; we needed to move around and warm up a bit. It’s amazing how stiff my joints were from being so cold. Did I even have a pulse?! Even though we sped by the pictureque towns of Banff, Lake Louise and Golden, I highly recommend you stop at all of these places to see the sites. Beautiful turquois glacial waters from distant icefields flow along the highway. We kept our eyes peeled for big horned sheep and the odd cow wandering along our route. Snow can be seen on the highest peaks year ‘round. Remember to look up when passing a sheer rock face; you might catch a glimpse of mountain goats perched on a “postage stamp”. Impossible!

Our route: Diamond Valley South to 541, to 40 North along the Kananaskis Trail, to The TransCanada Highway (Canmore to Sicamous), turning South on 97A to Vernon, then 97 South to Penticton. Continue on 97 to 3A, to 3 all the way to Hope, then #1 to Vancouver.

Nestled in the mountains is the Okanagan Valley, known for fruit orchards, wineries and nearby ski resorts. We spent two nights with more family in Penticton. This large town is situated between Okanagan and Skaha lakes, with beautiful beaches; the area enjoys Canada’s hottest summers. Vancouver was only another 5 hours away, through more mountains, so we did not rush out the door. Remembering that My Man is a HARD ASS, this was just a wee scoot. We spent a glorious ten days with kids and grandkids (cuddles), siblings and friends, including in-laws and out-laws, sharing sushi, bubble tea and everything in-between. Vancouver is a big seaport city like no other, with mountains, the Pacific Ocean and plenty of pubs and parks (in that order), with a bustling night life. One of my favorite things to do is to walk amongst the boats at one of the many marinas.

Tomorrow, we head South, back across the border into the United States. Our adventure continues…

This has a minimal stylish design with two information layout design themes, and the adjustable instrument angle set-up provides optimum visibility for every height of rider. The rider can even personalise the start-up screen message with their name.

Adding extra security, both bikes have standard fit keyless ignition and steering lock, which can be disabled. The key fob can also be turned off to prolong battery life and increase security. Plus, there’s a USB charging socket in a dedicated compartment under the seat, where devices can be kept safe and dry while charging.

Sidecars Have A Cool History

he theme for the 16th annual antique Motorcycle Club of America Southern National Meet at Denton Farm Park October 10 – 11 will be Sidecars. These rigs have been on two wheelers ever since pedals and the first engines. There might not be many on the road, but sidecars played a part in growing the motorcycle business in the early years.

The first sidecars were for bicycles in 1893. A French newspaper held a competition to see the best way to carry a passenger. Turns out on the side worked well and won.

Harley-Davidson had sidecar mounting lugs as early as 1905. Ten years later they were available from the Motor Company as ready to ride rigs. Generally, sidecars were fitted to the bigger UL, EL and FL models. By the 2000’s Harley-Davidson was selling more trikes, and the factory sidecar was discontinued in 2011.

Lots of companies have made many different styles of sidecars from basic to luxurious. I’ve seen sidecars made from wicker and wood to fiberglass and steel. We think of sidecars as a place for the wife or kids to ride, but many of them were used for commercial cargo hauling. The Postal and Delivery Services bought lots of sidecar rigs.

I think the first U.S. Army Harley-Davidson motorcycles were a dozen ordered for General John “Black Jack” Pershing’s 1916 Mexican Excursion. Some of them were sidecar rigs with mounted machine guns. Y’all have seen the WW II movies with motorcycle sidecars in combat. I hope we see some of those at Denton in October.

Sidecars have been important in the development of motorcycles through commercial and military and recreational uses. Here’s one that will be on the Denton show field.

1945 UL Police Rig

While I was at the AMCA Blue Ridge Chapter Winter Meeting, Rick Allen showed me a sidecar rig he’s taking to Denton. When you see me riding a couple laps in this sidecar around the Farm Park I’ll be shooting video so smile and wave.

This bike represents what would have been a really nice Police Sidecar right after World War II. A 1945 UL Big Twin Flathead. Probably made from parts intended for the Army.

This sidecar was used by the Metropolitan Police D.C. I think it’s original paint and marked as Unit 4. This original paint and color could have been done at the factory for the D.C. Police. It was likely used for hauling people around The District or could have been used in escort duty. After HarleyDavidson stopped selling sidecars to the general public they still provided them to the Secret Service for convoy escort duty. Imagine riding shotgun with those guys.

Rick got this sidecar in a deal with another one out of Wilmington in 1983. He matched the sidecar with a period correct bike in 1985. The bike was painted to match and now represents a Post-War Police Motorcycle that would have performed general duties back then. These machines weren’t for chasing speeders. They were for carrying people.

We talked about why the Police and commercial users liked the big Flathead motors. Rick said it’s because they make lots of low rev torque. The motors are easy to start, simplistic and reliable too. They can run and run all day long and not get hot compared to overhead valve engines.

I’m looking forward to seeing how it runs while Ramsey takes me for a few laps around Denton Farm Park on Saturday October 11.

Riding In The New Year - South Main Customs Style New Years Eve & New Years Day Rides

ec. 31,2024, it is about 11:15 pm, i am at the shop (South Main Customs in Kannapolis, NC) waiting for all these people who say they want to ride out the old year and ride in the new year. This is a tradition a small group of us started about eight years ago. Each year the crowd has gotten smaller, some bringing it in with their family, others too cold, and for different reasons. Once again, this year it was just Mike McCloud and me.

Mike and I pulled out around 11:20 rode out to Beattie’s Ford Road to the end, right onto Stokes Ferry Road to Hwy. 49, we were on hwy. 49 at midnight. After blowing the horns and revving the engines to bring in the New Year we rode on to 601 in Concord, NC to the Waffle House on US29. There we had our new year’s meal. Although a different location each year, Waffle House has been the traditional first meal of the year.

Jan. 1, 2025 around 11:00 Am a group of six of us pulled out of the shop at South Main Customs for our New Years Day ride. This ride has been happening since 1986 back in the Cyclone Cycle days. A lot of faces have changed over the years, but the belief that the things you are doing on New Year’s Day are things you will do all year, so riding my motorcycle is a must.

This year we were pleased to have Phil Gibson on a beautiful 1952 fl. He proved that old pans could keep up on any kind of road. When we left the shop, we headed out to Mill Bridge Road, onto Brown Road to 801, we followed 801 through Cooleemee then Advance to Bermuda Run. Here we headed east on I-40 to 150. We rode 150 to the back way into Bill’s Truck Stop where we had our New Year’s Day lunch, including black eyed peas and collard greens. I also had a double cheeseburger, Bill’s has one of the best on the interstate, everything on their menu is great.

From the truck stop we continued across I-85 through a traffic circle and along a few back roads that I had no idea where they went. We finally came to Hwy. 8, followed 8 to 49 to 601 and back to the shop. We rode a total of 200 miles, more or less, on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Now I am inviting everyone to join us Dec. 31, 2025, and Jan.1,2026 for a no pressure, no real destination ride to end the year and begin the new. New Years Ride To Remember David Lytton

s a florida beach bum, new years day was for Surfing and Sailing. We rode motorcycles all year round. So I was a little puzzled when I retired from the Air Force, returned to North Carolina and my buddies said we are riding to the lake for a Barefoot Skiing Tournament.

Yes, the tradition in the Hickory, Statesville, Mooresville and Lincolnton area is to ride to Lake Norman Marina on Highway 150 on New Years Day. The Carolina Show Ski Team hosted the 47th Barefoot Skiing Tournament this year. The water was rough and folks struggled to make long runs. It’s cool to watch them start out right in front of the crowd and do tricks as they go by.

Lake Norman Marina accepts the local Bikers who ride in for a while. Folks hangout there for about an hour, watch the first rounds of competition. Get a hot dog or chili for lunch. Make all those “guys who used to ride” jealous as they check out the bikes. After gathering at the marina, folks ride to local bars and for a New Years toast to friends.

Many of us call this the David Lytton Memorial Ride. David was a well known and loved local bike shop owner who passed in 2019. He led the ride from Statesville to the marina for several years.

I first met David at a drag strip somewhere years before I moved back to North Carolina. He was crew chief for a Sportster that Mike Nicholson was racing in I think modified class. I saw their tech card and told him I was going back to Western Carolina once my 20 years in the service was up.

New Years’ Day David usually led a group ride down to Lake Norman for the Barefoot Ski Contest. He said if you are going to ride this year, best to start the year riding. Now his son, Wes, still leads the Statesville group with lots of folks to the marina.

I saw lots of local folks ride in for a while New Years Day. Janette Thornley and Buddy Foss and the Westside Twins Motorcycle Company folks rode in on some nice looking bikes. Stop in and see them at 2313 West Front Street, Statesville, for the bike you want to be riding this year.

King Of The Road Bike Raffle

orth carolina is nascar car country and the piedmont is home to the King of NASCAR, Richard Petty. Richard Petty and Petty Enterprises has been a big part of our local community for decades, so no surprise when they teamed up with Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington, NC for a cool custom bike giveaway. A 2023 Harley-Davidson RoadKing was selected as the donor bike and outfitted with the King’s racing colors of Petty Blue and Orange. King Richards famous number 43 was painted on the saddle bags and Richard hand signed the tank. This signature, recognizable anywhere NASCAR is shown is one of the most ornate signatures I’ve ever seen. So cool to have this custom 1 of 1 bike up for grabs! Raffle tickets were available online and in store at $43 per ticket with the Petty Family Foundation as the beneficiary.

The Petty Family Foundation was formed in 2008 as a way for the Petty family to continue to give back to the community. Funds from this raffle will help with scholarships for the local community college automotive tech programs and local programs for Veterans and children. That pretty much covers the spread! One lucky winner would win this killer bike and a meet and greet with the King Of NASCAR, Richard Petty all for $43! This is an unbelievable deal!

The day of the raffle a few hopeful ticket holders gathered at Down Home Harley-Davidson with the Down Home staff and Petty Family Foundation’s director Shannon Newman. Down Home H-D’s new management team and staff huddled around the tub of raffle tickets. A final shake to shuffle the tickets was made and Charles Collom’s ticket was pulled! Congrats goes to Charles Collom for winning this one of a kind RoadKing, but a huge shout out to all who donated for a chance to win and helped the Petty Family Foundation spread some love!

A man came through my lane at the grocery store with a jug of wine and a bouquet of roses for Valentine’s Day. But before paying, he set the two items aside and said, “I’ll be right back.” He ran off, only to return a minute later with a second jug of wine and another bouquet of roses. “Two girlfriends?” I asked. “No,” he said. “Just one really angry one.”

At The Villages in Florida last week, there was a bumper sticker on a parked car that read: “I miss Chicago.” Someone broke the window, stole the radio, shot out all four of the tires, added a Biden bumper sticker and left a note that read: “Hope this helps”.

While shopping for our ‘Winter Getaway’ vacation clothes, my husband and I passed a display of bathing suits. It had been at least ten years and twenty pounds since I had even considered buying a bathing suit, so I sought my husband’s advice. “What do you think?” I asked. “Should I get a bikini or an all-in-one?” “Better get a bikini,” he replied. “You’d never get it all in one.” He’s still in intensive care.

A number of years ago, the Seattle Symphony was doing Beethoven’s Ninth under the baton of Milton Katims.

At this point, you must understand two things:

1. There’s a long segment in this symphony where the bass violins don’t have a thing to do. Not a single note for page after page. 2. There used to be a tavern called Dez’s 400, right across the street from the Seattle Opera House, rather favored by local musicians.

It had been decided that during this performance, after the bass players had played their parts in the opening of the Ninth, they were to quietly lay down their instruments and leave the stage rather than sit on their stools looking and feeling dumb for twenty minutes.

Once they got backstage, someone suggested that they trot across the street and quaff a few brews. After they had downed the first couple rounds, one said, “Shouldn’t we be getting back? It’d be awfully embarrassing if we were late.”

Another, presumably the one who suggested this excursion in the first place, replied, “Oh, I anticipated we could use a little more time, so I tied a string around the last pages of the conductor’s score. When he gets down to there, Milton’s going to have to slow the tempo way down while he waves the baton with one hand and fumbles with the string with the other.”

So, they had another round and finally returned to the Opera House, a little tipsy by now. However, as they came back on stage, one look at their conductor’s face told them they were in serious trouble. Katims was furious! And why not? After all... The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to go into the examining room and he would see if he could help her. She sat and waited three hours before the doctor reappeared. The angry woman demanded, “What took you so long?” He smiled and then told her, “Well, I had to get permits from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service, and

the Bureau of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a recreational area.”

Little Suzie had a terrible problem of falling asleep in Sunday school. One day she was dozing off as usual when the teacher asked her, “Suzie, who was Jesus’ mother?” Suzie, being asleep didn’t answer. It was then that little Johnny, who sat at the desk right behind her took out his ballpoint pen and jabbed her from behind. She perked up and shouted, “Mary mother of Jesus!” “Correct!” the teacher replied. Suzie went back to sleep. A while later the teacher called on little Suzie again by asking, “Suzie, who is our one and only saviour?” Once again, she didn’t reply so Johnny did as he did before by jabbing her in the back again. She sat up and shouted, “Jesus Christ!” “Correct!” said the teacher, and Suzie went off to sleep again. More time passed until the teacher asked Suzie, “What did Eve say to Adam after their 23rd child?” Johnny pricked her in the back again, so Suzie got up and shouted, “If you stick that thing into me one more time, I swear I’ll break it in two!” The teacher fainted.
