T
his issue marks the beginning of our 14th year of publishing The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. We launched it in the corner of the vendor’s building at the Easyriders Rodeo in Wilson in 1998. While
we were in Wilson last month, we visited the spot and paused to reflect for a moment. What a ride it has been! It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t thank all the advertisers and all the readers who patronized them for more than a decade, because without you, there would be no Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Greensboro Harley-Davidson has been in every issue! There have also been many people who signed on as staff over the years. It goes without saying that we couldn’t have done it without them, either. Grant Eagle (Concord) has been with us for 10 years. Alan Dockery (Newton) for 9 years, Wendy Rogers (Fayetteville), Gary Steelman (Union Grove), and Scott Wicker (Alamance Co.) have been onboard for 6 years. Renea Clutts (office), Pam Lory (Middlesex), Caroline Jones (Winston-Salem), Kathy Johnson (Durham), Crystal Turner (Kill Devil Hills), and Dolly Poplin (Troy) have been with us 5 years. Jeff Deal (Asheville) has been helping us for 4 years. Many others worked with us for shorter periods of time, but that doesn’t mean that their contributions aren’t appreciated. One of the things that I contribute to the success of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is everyone working together to make it happen each and every month. Many people tell us at events that they love the magazine and it is really rewarding to learn that our advertisers are networking. Now we are beginning another year. If you would like to work with us and help produce the #1 motorcycle magazine in the Carolinas, give me a call at 336-885-5400 and we will discuss how we can make that happen. There are areas available with advertisers in place and there are areas that we are targeting that would render bonus commissions. We are also looking for a few good people who aspire to become sales managers. This can be full time or part time, and it comes with certain responsibilities like a ‘job’, but it’s more fun. No matter if you advertise with us, work with us, or just read The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, we pledge that we will do everything that we can to deliver the best magazine and a best website every month going forward. Thank you all for your support. So get out there and ride free, but remember Courtesy is owed; Love is given; Respect is earned.

Quotable Quote
“It should be your care, therefore, and mine, to elevate the minds of our children and exalt their courage; to accelerate and animate their industry and activity; to excite in them an habitual contempt of meanness, abhorrence of injustice and inhumanity, and an ambition to excel in every capacity, faculty, and virtue. If we suffer their minds to grovel and creep in infancy, they will grovel all their lives.” John Adams, Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law, 1756

Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum Plans To Relocate
Since 2002, Wheels Through Time has developed into one of the premier museums of its type, housing over 320 of America’s rarest and most significant two and four-wheeled vehicles, and an unprecedented collection of art and memorabilia dating back to the roots of our country’s transportation heritage. The announcement to relocate comes as a result of a unanimous decision by the museum Board Of Directors, who stated that in order to continue to preserve history in new and innovative ways, and to fulfill its mission to educate and inspire a diverse, multi-generational audience on the history of American transportation, the opportunity to move the museum to a new and larger location offers much promise as to the museum’s future. Currently, Wheels Through Time is researching several potential locations around the country, and has garnered much interest from some of America’s best riding destinations and scenic areas. However, its current operations in Maggie Valley continue to move ahead full steam. The museum has already hosted tens of thousands of visitors in 2011, and has countless great events scheduled throughout the summer and fall. “We’ve been experiencing quite a season here at the museum!” said curator and founder, Dale Walksler. “Hosting events like the upcoming Great American Race and the International Spyder Rally introduces Wheels Through Time to thousands of new faces, and our visitors and members continue to let us know that we’re on the right track in providing an experience to remember.” Recently, the museum was awarded one of TripAdvisor.com’s highest honors - The 2011 Certificate Of

Excellence - for consistent great quality feedback from guests. Museum staff will keep visitors past, present, and future aware of progress on relocation through bi-weekly newsletters via email, and with regular website updates. While closing to the general public on October 31st, the museum will facilitate private tours until final relocation plans are confirmed. The Annual Haywood County Toy Run and Wheels Through Time Museum Bike Raffle, on November 12th will be the museum’s final public opening in Maggie Valley. For more information, please visit www.wheelsthroughtime. com or call 828-926-6266. The staff will be happy to assist with any questions pertaining to the museum’s future, as well as with scheduling future visits.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine
Easyriders Rodeo Tour
By:WildThing It is always hot in Wilson, NC in July for the Easyriders Rodeo. For Mark and I, the rodeo marks an important anniversary. We first attended the Rodeo in 1998 with a dream and a handful of flyers to introduce Full Throttle Magazine to the bikers of the Carolinas. We made a lot of friends that first weekend and garnered enough support from biker friendly businesses to publish our first magazine in August of 1998. We have been going strong for 13 years now! Anyway, back to hot and dusty Wilson. When we arrived Friday afternoon, the campground was pretty full, and the camp roads were clogged with four wheelers of all shapes and sizes. We did see a few motorcycles riding around and several bikes were parked beside tents and RV’s. The rodeo qualifying events were over for the day, so the entertainment shifted to live bands, Shaye, Heist, and Sok Monkey on the stage in the vendor mall and the parade crazies in the campground. This event is definitely not for children or the faint of heart! Count on seeing some outrageous things in the campgrounds like blow up dolls, small swimming pools with cavorting bikini-clad ladies, kinky campsite décor, and an anything goes attitude. Oh yeah, then there was the Dragon Slayers MC with the 15’ screen broadcasting live video of certain ‘goings on’ in their camp area. They also sported a Wheel of Fortune that upon spinning, a prize, (beer) was given for certain exposures! Our local Full Throttle sales reps., Whistle and Lynn Hill, had their camp spot cordoned off and their pop-up set up, so we hung our banner and spent the evening watching the parade and passing out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Saturday dawned hot and breezy (after an early morning shower) and there was a full schedule of rodeo games and a ride in bike show. The bike show was a peoples’ choice and the voting has done under the watchful eye of the local chapter of CMA. There were some pretty unique rides on display so the vote was tough, but a pan/Sportster with a tooled leather seat owned by Angel Sturgis of Purcellville, VA took 1st Place. A Street Glide owned by David Price of Kenly, NC took 2nd Place and a Wide Glide ridden all the way from Amarillo, TX by Ronnie Bierman came in a respectable 3rd. We rode over to the track and the Teresi Dyno Drags were going on the big rig. There were several rounds of bar stool racing, including an all girl round. These are always a hoot to watch! You can see the video of one heat of the guys on You Tube at: http://youtu.be/ fXtV2Li96Ck and the girls at: http://youtu.be/veu2bdbdVYY . We watched the barrel race, bikes pulling weight transfer sleds, and the game where the girl (with a potato in hand) rides a tire tied to the back of a motorcycle. While the riders race down the track and come to a complete stop, she jumps up and
runs her potato back down the track to deposit it in a bucket faster than the girl in the other lane. There was a slow race, wienie bite, and keg derby on the schedule, too. After each game, the Easyriders Trophy Girl, chosen Friday night, was on hand to pass out the trophies. Continuing their dominance of the circuit, Robert Tabor and Jason Tabor of Canton Ohio took 1st and 2nd Place in the Top Cowboy (over all) category. Eddie Austin from Salisbury, NC finished 3rd. All the games and races are great fun to watch, just be sure to take a cold beverage with you, ‘cause it is hot and dusty, Wilson-style. We meandered back to the midway and browsed the vendors, talked to some more folks and watched the line form for a glimpse, autograph, and maybe some pictures with the guest of honor, Charlie “Jax” Hunnam of Sons Of Anarchy fame. He was scheduled to sign autographs from 6-10 pm. Now he is really a hunk, but I wasn’t patient enough to wait in the 3-4 hour line to pay for an autograph! I can watch him on TV all I want. I did get a few shots of him as close as I could get. In addition to Shaye, Heist, and Sok Monkey who all took the stage again, The Josh Lambert Band, The Lacs, and Texas Hippie Coalition were on the line-up for the midway stage that entertained the folks through to midnight. We headed on back to the campground to partake of the scrumptious pig that Whistle had been cooking all day. It was so big, (168#), that it took longer than he had anticipated to cook. But when it was ready, people appeared out of nowhere to scarf down a pig sandwich. I had no trouble eating two! It was the best I ever had. We spent the rest of the evening enjoying the parade and watching everyone have fun. If you have never been, put it on your bucket list take in all the sights and sounds of an Easyriders Rodeo Tour! You can see all the pictures that we took by visiting www. FullThrottleMagazine.com > Pictures > Easyriders Rodeo. Be warned, some of them have adult content. Maybe we will see you there next year and you will be in the pictures!

The Horse Back Street Smoke Out 12
19
Raisin’ Cain, Rebel And Hell at Rockingham
Story and photo by Alan Dockery The last weekend of June five events were on my calendar. But I was at one of the best biker parties on the east coast – The Horse Back Street Choppers Smoke Out 12. There are a whole bunch of reasons why I love the Smoke Out from cool people, the coolest bikes, lots of vendors, and great bands to thundering down the drag strip just for fun. By Friday there were lots of folks setting up camp on both sides of the drag strip in Rockingham, NC and ready for the party to get started. Things kick off kind of mellow as folks check out the vendors and George the Painter’s White Trash Art Show. Jasmine Cain even played an acoustic set on the main stage. While I was setting up and meeting the folks camped around me, I could hear bikes roaring down the strip. The Portal Keepers put on their Hula Hoops and Combat Boots Show to entertain folks. About suppertime Hammer, Englishman, and Edge brought the crowd to the stage for the official welcome to the Smoke Out 12 and gave away some t-shirts, too. One band I always look forward to, Rebel Son, cranked things up on stage and got a crowd down front for the wet T-shirt contest with Roadside Marty. Then Rebel Son played for a couple more hours as we sang along to their rowdy honky tonk tunes. You should have been there when Jasmine Cain joined Lee Johnson singing the old Johnny Cash song, Jackson. Saturday the party was hoping with lots of folks taking in all there is to do and see at the Smoke Out. I suggest you stick a schedule in your pocket because there is so much going on it’s easy to miss something. Early in the afternoon there was a Painted Ladies contest. The staff provided the paints and brushes, and we judged folks’ “artwork.” Besides the many vendors you don’t always see at other events, there was often something going on at the main stage. This party has my favorite bike show of the year. These ain’t your usual storebought customs or bikes with some paint and bolt-on chrome do-dads. Bikes in the Smoke Out show are unique rides that always have me wondering, “How did they do that? What’s that made out of?” You have to make a few passes down the show line to catch it all. And the parking area has lots of cool rides that will give you ideas for your next real custom, too. In the middle of the afternoon The Richland County Regulators battled it out in a roller derby demonstration. Who doesn’t love watching good-looking, tough women push each other around for fun? After some more drag racing it was time for the XS Speed Mini-Bike Races. Every year it gets better as more folks build cool little mini-bikes. There were about 50 that passed tech inspection and competitors had to wear costumes too. I even entered the mini-bike race as a WalMartian. They started with a Powder Puff race for the ladies, and then ran heats to determine who would be in the finals.
Kings Of Hell took the stage before dark to get folks fired up with their rockabilly style. Next the Horse Girls and staff presented awards to the Long Road Riders. These are the folks who rode from the previous weekend’s party in New Orleans to Rockingham. Roadside Marty hosted another wet t-shirt contest, too. The last couple hours of the Smoke Out featured Jasmine Cain. This nationally famous band put on an awesome show rocking us into the night. After the official events, the party moved to the campgrounds with the band Peacepipe providing the tunes. Some ladies took turns in a pole dancing contest while the rest of us cheered them on and did burnouts. It is the Smoke Out and lots of folks hit the burn out pit to smoke us out. The Portal Keepers even put on a fire show in front of the band while some of us drag raced mini-bikes. By sometime in the early morning hours I was tired and headed back to the camp. Another awesome Smoke Out becoming fun memories. “The Smoke Out is about choppers,” said Edge, the event organizer. “It is about builders, from professional builders to those bloody-knuckled guys and ladies burning the midnight oil in an unheated shed to build a chopper they can call their own. Chops of all makes are featured, American, British, Japanese, everything. The event is about riders, cross-town to cross-country in a rainstorm.” One of the things I love about the Smoke Out is the attitude Edge mentioned. It’s so cool to attend an event with all kinds of people and bikes. There were folks from Florida to Maine to the West Coast. Old guys were partying with young folks. Bikes of all kinds and all states of build from old stockers to true homebuilt customs were there. I met young guys who reminded me of how I, and many of y’all, got into motorcycling. They were riding whatever they could afford and customizing with whatever they could find. If you want to really go old school and cool be at the Smoke Out 13 next year. 2011 Triad Flight Of Honor Ride
By: Caroline I was so very proud to take part of the third Triad Flight Of Honor Ride on Saturday, June 25. Ever since the first ride back in 2009, Guy Maffett with along with the Winston-Salem HOG Chapter has worked tirelessly to raise funds so that any World War II Veteran that wants to go has the opportunity to fly to Washington, DC to visit the World War II Memorial. From the start of the very first ride, Guy has been the driving force in organizing the ride, coordinating, and going on each flight to DC. To date there have been 11 flights and 1100 Veterans that have gone to see the Memorial. As the “Greatest Generation” gets older, there is a sense of urgency to continue to raise funds for these Veterans to be able to go on these flights, as there are currently over 300 Veterans waiting their turn to make the trip to DC. This year, there were over 225 people taking part in the ride that began and ended at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in WinstonSalem. As folks registered, breakfast was being served and Krispy Kreme donuts were available. After the Honor Guard presented the colors, Veronica White from WXII news team served as Grand Marshall calling for everyone to “start your engines.” The 3 hour ride ended back at Smokin’ where Doss’s Ice Cream, and Mountain Fried Chicken served the hungry crowd lunch. As we ate, the Taylor Vaden Band entertained us. For the remainder of the year, three more flights are planned. On September 17 the next flight will leave Greensboro. Also, the Winston-Salem HOG Chapter has planned a ride to meet the Veterans when they arrive in DC. If you are interested in taking part in this, you can get details from Guy Maffett at gsmaffett@triad.rr.com. The next date is October 15 and very appropriately, Veterans Day, November 11, 2011. Over the past 3 years, over $36,600 has been raised, but with Veterans waiting to fly to DC, more money needs to be raised to accomplish this. If you would like to help out, you can make donations at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson at 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem.

Million Mile Monday
By: Mike Terry, Assistant Director Statesville HOG As I write this article the space shuttle Atlantis is blasting off into space for the last and final mission of the shuttle program. It is traveling at a top speed of 19,000 miles per hour, which allows it to travel a distance of 456,000 miles in a 24-hour period. That is quite impressive and the only thing I know of that has traveled more miles recently in a 24 hour period are all the Harley-Davidson owners worldwide. Yes, on June 27th we once again celebrated the Harley Owners Group “Million Mile Monday”. The final tally is in and those that rode and logged their miles have a combined total of 4,376,470 miles. The slogan for this great ride is “Monday’s Suck, Screw It Lets Ride”. Well, they could not have been more right and they did not have to ask me twice. Over the last three years with the Statesville, North Carolina HOG chapter at Tilley’s HarleyDavidson, I have had the pleasure of planning and leading the Million Mile Monday rides. So far we have had over twenty bikes ride and have logged a grand total of over 12,500 miles over three years. The best part is that we had a very good excuse to take a Monday off and ride with friends. As they say, it does not matter if you ride to work, ride to lunch, ride to dinner, or ride all day. What matters is that you got on your Hog and rode and logged your miles. When we gathered for this ride, I had to laugh when one of our members looked around and said “so we are the guys without a job!” The truth was that he is retired and the rest of us took a vacation day. Our ride took us from Statesville up Hwy 115 to Hwy 421 north though Wilkesboro and Boone over to Mountain City, TN. We rode the Snake and took a short break in Shady Valley, Tn. at the general store. Much to our surprise the parking lot there was full. But out of an estimated 60 bikes there we were the only Harley’s. I guess BMW must have also had a special Monday ride going on! We turned right out of the store on Hwy 113 and our next stop was just 10 miles away at the world’s shortest tunnel known as Backbone Tunnel. The next stop was for lunch at the Whistle Pig in Damascus, VA for what turned out to be a great meal and a fun wait staff that provided excellent service. Their BBQ pizza is to die for. After lunch we topped off the tanks and started leg number two of the ride. A couple of the guys had never ridden The Snake before and when I told them to hold on to their handlebars for Hwy 58. If you have never rode Hwy 58 from Damascus East to Mouth Of Wilson well you have missed a real treat. If you like lots of curves and Christmas tree farms it is a must ride. We ended up at Freeborne’s at the junction of Hwy 18 and the Blue Ridge Parkway for our final stop before heading back to Statesville. The total ride for the day was 322 miles round trip.
Harley Davidson Ultra Classic: $23,500 Gasoline: $30.18 Food: $8.75 Riding with Friends on a Monday $ PRICELESS Mark your calendar now for next year’s Million Mile Monday. But remember that every Monday is a great day to ride and we have 51 of them to practice on until next year.

2nd Annual Special Olympic Biker Run
By: Steve (Jackhammer) Rowland Today I rode up to Beach House Harley-Davidson in Shallotte, NC. The 2nd Annual Special Olympics Poker ride was starting out there. The organizers didn’t get this ride in the Cruisin’ Calendar in time for print. They had a pretty good turn out, 40 bikes signed up, with about 50 riders. This ride had a $25 registration fee, but that included lunch, they also had 50/50 and door prizes. They raised about $2500 for the Special Olympics. The Brunswick County Sherriff’s Department was on hand to escort the riders from start to finish. I love riding in the rides that the police escort. The ride ended up at the Calabash creamery. Greg Hansen, the owner, said he has quite a few biker runs stop by to enjoy some scream (ice cream). I want to share a little about the NC Special Olympics; they serve nearly 40,000 registered athletes. They have an accredited local program in every county making it one of the largest and most respected programs in the world. Since the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968, the number of people with and without intellectual disabilities who are involved with the organization has been growing, but the unmet need to reach more people with intellectual disabilities is growing more and more. Many people know that Special Olympics provides sports training and athletic competition year-round in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The money raised today is really going to help. What’s not as widely known is that Special Olympics sporting events occur frequently throughout the year. In 2009, for
example, there were more than 44,000 competitions around the world, an average of 121 a day. I met Captain Jane Evan. she and some of her coworkers at the Brunswick Detention center in Bolivia NC put this ride together. The plan for the 3rd annual ride is going to be bigger and better. I hope you can make it on the next ride. She ask me to thank Beach House Harley-Davidson, Calabash Creamery, and the other stops for their support and, of course, everyone who came out, both bikers and everyone who helped out. If you would like to help these guys out, just go to this web site: http://goo.gl/mP0dj . You can also reach Captain Jane Evan at the Brunswick Co Sherriff Office 910-253-2762. By: Scott Wicker In the short time The Other Place has been reopened by new owner Lamont Turner, a lot of events have been going on with more on the way. Wednesday nights have had a great turn out for their bike night and Thursday nights have been a BIG HIT with the Big Dog After Party following the races at nearby Piedmont Drag Way. On Saturday, July 9th, The Other Place held one of their first bike shows of the year. The turn out was great even though the temperature was HOT! Amy and Julie cooled things down for a while washing most of the bike show contestants’ bikes. Several gave the burn out pit a try and great food was served and music played throughout the day to entertain the crowd. Several lovely ladies were designated to judge the bikes and when all was said and done, everyone had a great time. We would like to thank Lamont and all his staff at The Other Place for their hospitality and a great time. Congratulations to all of the top finishers in the bike show! Results of the bike show are as follows: 1st Place - Lee Graham, 2nd Place - Chuck Henderson, 3rd Place - Johnny McNeill. Best of Show: Darrian Woody. Remember! Ride Safe!

The Winston-Salem Moose Riders recently sponsored a monthly summer ride-in at the Moose Lodge at 1495 Salisbury Road in Winston-Salem, NC. They were held on June 12 and July 10. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon when I attended on July 10. I was warmly welcomed, and found a spot under the ample shade trees as we listened to a great live band, “Riding Wednesday.” There were free hot dogs as well as cold beer and drink specials. For the competitive natured folks, corn hole and horseshoe games with prizes were going on. Now the main purpose of this is to help Moosehart raise money for their many initiatives such as the kids at Brenner Children’s Hospital. They also help the Children’s Home of Winston-Salem in the many projects that they sponsor to help kids that are in the foster care system. They will also be hosting a benefit ride on August 13. I hope that you can come out for the next ride-in on August 14 from 4 pm to 6:30 for a no-stress way to end at good weekend. If you would like more information, you can call the Winston-Salem Moose Lodge at 336-785-3574 or Ron Palm at 336-922-2000.

9th Annual Christmas In July Toy Run
By: Kelly Wescott What a weekend! The 9th Annual Christmas In July Toy Run to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital was held the weekend of July 15-16th, on a gorgeous weekend. It was a blowout year with a mountain of toys and a cash total of $17,500 (minus a minimal cost for event shirts) to help the children. Riders came from near and far to ride from M & M Leather in Fayetteville to Durham on what had to be one of the nicest days in awhile! Early registrants were treated on Friday night to a delicious spaghetti dinner courtesy of Holly and the girls at Legends Pub in Fayetteville. As usual, they had all the sides, cool drinks, and music to kick off the event. Dozens of early birds registered including our faithful contingency from Virginia, who come down every year just for this event. Thanks all! Saturday morning dawned cool for a welcome change. Arriving at M&M Leather, the bikes and riders came in non-stop until it was time to leave at 10 am. The final count was 370 bikes with 470+ riders! We had Harleys, Victorys, Goldwings, Suzukis, Trikes, Can-Ams; all manner of bikes. Groups such as The Chrome Knights, The American Legion, the local HOG chapter, The Southern Cruisers, His Laboring Few Bikers Ministry for Christ, the local Star Chapter, and others were represented. The event began with an auction raising $700 offered for a beautiful, custom-made wooden Harley rocking chair. It was purchased by a couple, who then graciously donated it to the hospital Awesome! We had a brief safety meeting, a short prayer for a safe ride, and then it was kickstands up, as 370 gear heads tried to out-roar each other! The ride was perfect. We were fully escorted by Cumberland and Harnett County Sheriff’s Departments for the entire ride. Lillington, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Apex Police Departments, Durham City Police Department, Wake County Sherriff’s Department, and Durham County Sherriff’s Department, all escorted us through their respective areas without incident, and it was greatly appreciated. Arriving at the hospital, we were treated to a BBQ and Chicken lunch provided by Texas Roadhouse (Fayetteville and Durham locations). Try to imagine feeding Cole slaw, baked beans, green beans, and rolls to approximately 470+ people in about 45 minutes. I don’t know how they do it, but they do it very well! It was wonderful. Then they cleaned everything up while we walked over to the hospital to deliver our goodies. Thanks for supporting us! The hospital experience is eye opening, especially for first timers. Custom Edge allows us to use their trailer to deliver a large pile of toys to the lobby, and then listen as families tell us their stories about their time spent at the hospital. Being a patient at Duke or any children’s hospital is usually a traumatic experience. What we do is try to make it slightly easier. The toys are given to the children whenever they are needed. Sometimes they are given to siblings who happen to be in the middle of a family crisis. Gift cards are given to families who may have left their homes in a hurry and need essential items to get them through the first days. Everything we bring is greatly ap-
preciated. The hospital staff is very gracious in thanking us for taking the time and money to do this for them. Duke’s Children’s Hospital serves over 200,000 children a year, with 34 sub-specialties offered. To date, our toy run has delivered over $100,000 to assist them. We returned to M & M Leather who provided yummy sausage dogs, BBQ, fried jalapeño’s, french fries, fried sweet potatoes, cole slaw and a great cake for dinner. Terrific music by “Going Blind” helped set the mood, as Will and Ponce started the raffles. Lots of T-shirts, electronics, leather, rain gear, lots of gift cards, along with an outdoor A/C unit were offered for raffle. Hundreds of tickets were sold, raising more money for the cause. Wal-Mart Transportation 6840, M & M Leather (Victory of Fayetteville), Texas Roadhouse, Legends, The Custom Edge, Double D Productions, Up & Coming Weekly, Dan Heiman State Farm Insurance, The Winford Foundation, JEB Designs, Backwoods Customs, 96.5 BOB FM, Gregory Hunt Builders, and Cape Fear Aesthetics also sponsored this event. Thank you. Everyone had a good time and many first timers said they would definitely return next year. We are hoping that everyone brings a friend, as Will said, next year is the 10th Anniversary; we would love to have over 450 bikes participate. Set your calendar now for the third Saturday in July. Hope to see you there! A special note: To the fellow rider/patriot who pulled over on the Durham Freeway and stood at parade rest until every bike had passed; that was a very nice show of support. Thank you, sir.

By: ChromeDoll Thursday, the 14th of July, Hometown Harley-Davidson held another fantastic Bike Night at East Coast Wings in Greenville, NC. Jasen, the GM of Hometown Harley-Davidson prefers to host their bike night at a local business instead of at the dealership in order to support the community, and give the staff a chance to get out and enjoy as well. After two days of triple digit temperatures, this day was absolutely beautiful. The weather was just perfect for riding, which brought out many riders to enjoy the event. The staff of Hometown Harley-Davidson had it all set up with tables and chairs in the parking lot, along with great music, a beer tent, and corn-hole. They also had a 50/50 raffle along with some door prizes, which were awesome. It truly was great being able to hang outside and mingle with old friends along with some new ones. We were able to see a variety of bikes, many of which were recently purchased from Hometown Harley-Davidson. Check out their ad in the August Issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for some of their great deals. One bike, which really stood out in the crowd, was a custom built springer by Jason Nobles, of East Carolina Custom Cycles. The bike was really cool with its custom paint job, and custom powder coating on the wheels, frame and handlebars. This is one reason I really enjoy attending bike nights, because you not only get to hang with fellow bikers, but see some really cool bikes. I would like to personally thank Jasen Wilson and his staff at Hometown Harley-Davidson for a great time and look forward to the next bike night. Continue to read The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine for future dates of their bike nights, and until then, whether it’s hot or cool, ride responsibly. Don’t be a fool!

Summer Bash 2011
By: WildThing When the old-timers sit around the bar late at night, one might chance upon stories of past summer bashes, some good, some ordinary. But we never really get tired of trying to top the best that memory has to serve up. Hot summer days, the roar of motorcycles descending on the appointed place, cold beer, and music. All these elements and more were present at the Steel Horse Saloon at the Greensboro Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Park on June 18. It had been a goal of Mike and Missy, Steel Horse owners, to revive the ‘old school’ summer bike bash that was legendary in the triad area for years. People would ride in from all over the state, just to be part of the legend. I think a new legend was started. One can say ‘back in the day’, ‘we used to’, or ‘I was there when’, all you want but this is 2011 and it was different. In my opinion, the stories will start anew with this Steel Horse Summer Bash. The morning was spent filling beer coolers and icing down beer tubs in the park, vendors setting up their canopies and displays, grill firing up, and banners being hung on the stage and the sound mixer working hard to get the tunes to come out just right. About 12:30, 21st Century Goliath took the stage and it was on! The parking lot was filling up with bikes and folks were chillin’ under the big trees in the park to listen to the music. This is an adult venue, and I love kids, but not here, not now. The aroma of dogs, sausage dogs, and burgers filled the air along with tunes from Goliath, Problem Child, and later on Jacked Up, that set the stage for musical enjoyment on a summer afternoon. Out front, there was a trio of ladies offering to wash your ride for tips. I am not sure if the wash job was good, but the view was. There was a tattoo contest hosted by Ink Lab Tattoo of Kern-
ersville that brought forth at least 8 decorated ladies and even more gents that showed off their ink to the appreciative crowd. It was hard to choose, but Lucas, proprietor of Ink Lab Tattoo, managed to find the most colorful artistic crowd pleasers and reward them with gift certificates and t-shirts. Next on stage at the band break was the fabled wet t-shirt contest. Bids were solicited for guys to pour the ice water on the willing participants, much to the joy of the crowd, and under the watchful eye of Mike Stogner, (proprietor of Steel Horse), to make sure it was done properly! All the girls were lovely and delighted the crowd. Here again, it was hard to pick a winner, but the crowd rules! Come the storm. I personally cannot remember a Summer Bash without a thunderstorm. It weeds out the weenies (it NEVER rains in the bar, rookie). A lot of riders left, riding hard just before the storm in the hopes they would make it home before their rides got wet. Others said “It’s just water” and stayed. Even the beer tub girls were happy to stay out, even after their pop-up was taken down. They said their beer was colder than the beer in the bar, so people liked them better! I know I did. As usual with weather, the rain stopped, they uncovered the sound system and Jacked Up jumped on stage to start rocking out the tunes! Some of the folks that ran from the rain started rolling back in in their cages and some on bikes to continue the party. They had Jacked Up and later, Dirty Surprise, a crowd favorite, to look forward to. My sun was beginning to set, so we decided to ride on home, leaving the more energetic to party on into the night. So begins a new chapter of the fabled Summer Bash. Here’s a toast: May it go forward for years to come, initiating the newbies and satisfying us old timers in the tradition of Summer Bash.

Carolens Optometrics Center - Wiley X Sunglasses
By: Buzz: When I go riding, I make sure to dress appropriately for safety and comfort. I always make sure to have over the ankle leather boots, jeans, and an appropriate black t-shirt. One thing I had been overlooking was my sunglasses. I used to be the type that was happy with a pair of $5 gas station sunglasses. Not Any More! I started noticing that my sunglasses had an awful glare when the sun was in my face, a glare that made my vision hazy and made me uncomfortable. I decided that I should stop by Carolens Optometrics and just try on a pair of their Wiley X sunglasses specifically designed for motorcycle riders. I checked over their selection and picked out the pair that suited me style wise, and slipped ‘em on. I was instantly pleased with the comfort and clarity of these sunglasses. I tried on a few other pairs to make sure that I was getting the pair that was the best for me. The glasses range in size and style from rectangular to oval lenses with different accents and arms. I was impressed with all the styles, but stuck with the “Blink”, my first choice. The “Blink” is part of the “Climate Control Series”, and come with a removable foam cavity seal that keeps wind and debris out of your eyes while you are riding. This is great for me, I have to keep a bottle of clear eyes allergy drops in my saddlebags to help quench the burning and irritation my eyes go through if I ride by freshly cut grass, or on any ride in the spring while everything is blooming! The cavity seal has greatly decreased the eye irritation I was used to experiencing while riding. Since the seal is removable I don’t have a need for two different pairs of shades. Just pop the seal out and you have a great pair of sunglasses for any use. The lenses exceed high velocity impact safety and optical standards, are 100% UV protection and polarized for unequaled clarity and contrast. I noticed that the stoplights and break lights are bright and my vision in and out of direct sun light is amazingly clear. With my old shades, they came off as soon as I was off my bike; they were not comfortable to look through. This is not the case with my Wiley X sunglasses. They are comfortable on my face and make my vision clear. On hazy days they take the haze out of the sky, it’s amazing. Every time I put on my Wiley X sunglasses, I think to myself, “Man, these are nice!” Wiley X is my brand of choice now. I urge you all to check them out. Glasses start at $60 and are well worth every penny. Carolens Optometrics is located at 801A North Main Street, High Point, NC. 336-841-3937. Stop by and see Bronda, she will make sure to give you all the facts and help you select the pair that fits your needs. Carolens Optometrics is also a complete eye care center and Dr. John K. Lindsey is able to take
care of all your Optometric needs from exams to prescriptions for glasses and contacts. Don’t forget to tell them you read about them in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine!

NC Veterans Park Dedication
By: Renea This 4th of July I was fortunate enough to spend my day attending the dedication of the new North Carolina Veterans Park in Fayetteville, NC. This park is the first state park dedicated to military veterans - young and old - living or deceased, from all branches of the Armed Services: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The primary theme is a veteran’s journey; life before, during, and after service. This dedication had an extra special meaning to me because one of the greatest men I know was chosen to be included in this memorial: Ken Brown. This memorial displays 100 bronzed hand impressions. These impressions represent one veteran chosen from each county in North Carolina. I cannot think of any greater person than Ken Brown to represent Stokes County. He dedicates countless hours honoring veterans, past and present on his websites http://www.kenbrown.info/. When he was chosen he was allowed to choose four other individuals whom he feels is dedicated to supporting veterans. He chose his wife Margo Brown, son Troy Brown, retired Air Force Veterans Clif Messick and Crow McGee. These honorees also have their hands displayed in this memorial. The dedication began with your normal introduction and speeches from political representatives. Governor Bev Purdue and Senator Kay Hagan took the time out of their day to speak. We were honored to hear a brief speech from MG Rodney O. Anderson who introduced the final speakers LTG Frank G. Helmick, Deputy Commanding General, United States Forces - Iraq and CSM Earl L. Rice who presented their speech via the PA system because they were speaking from Iraq. The Veterans memorial is a gorgeous memorial. Once you entered through the breezeway you can view a wall that is lined with bronze hand molds that represent the 100 Veterans chosen for this honor. The marking the hands with the veteran’s names has not yet been completed, however, we were informed it would be done soon. Displayed in front of the wall are 50 columns that are marked with all of the counties in North Carolina. The columns are organized by the date the counties were established with each column displaying two counties, one on each side. The four chosen veteran supporters are lined on each side of the column by their respective counties. The memorial is a beautiful way to capture each person who was honored. The wall and columns are facing a moving water wall that is meant to represent the action and excitement of a military career or to welcome home troops. The memorial also includes a museum that displays artwork that symbolizes commitment, courage, dedication, heroism, sacrifice, service, and honor. I can honestly say that I have never seen a piece of artwork that consists of nothing but dog tags. It is truly a breathtaking site. I feel sure that I did not do this memorial justice so my only suggestion is for you to visit it yourself. I feel sure you will not be disappointed. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the birth of this wonderful country than honoring our veterans. Please visit the wonderful photos on our website: www.fullthrottlemagazine. com.

Ray Price Racing Thunders To Winner’s Circle Team Captures Win At Harley-Davidson Nitro Exhibition Race At NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals Bristol Dragway has become the second home track for Ray Price Racing. Therefore it was fitting that the team capture the win and the number two qualifying spot at home on Father’s Day in front of thousands of NHRA race fans. This was a special exhibition race on June 17-19 for Harley-Davidson Nitro Harleys at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway. Four rounds of qualifying, two on Friday and two on Saturday, were cut to three when Saturday’s fourth round was cancelled due to rain. In the first round Ray Price Racing’s Tommy Grimes piloted the 1,000 horsepower nitro Harley drag bike to a 6.38 ET at 213.30 mph. Then in the second and third rounds Grimes put down the power on the well prepared quarter mile track to post a 6.43 ET at 213.91 mph and 6.44 ET at 222.07 mph respectively. “The drag bike ran so consistent during qualifying and that got the team to the number two qualifying spot” said Ray Price. During the first round of Sunday’s eliminations Grimes ran a 6.53 ET at 221.34 mph to take the first round win. Grimes brought the crowd to its feet after putting down a 6.32 ET at 219.79 mph to move the team into the finals. Grimes ran another electrifying 6.32 ET at 224.32 MPH to thunder through the finish line enroute to the winners circle. “I want to thank Kris Schooner, Racing Manager for HarleyDavidson for putting together this event with NHRA,” said Ray Price. “The whole team is elated to be here and to have won the race.”

JT Harris Veteran Memorial Festival
By: DPapaBear The J T Harris Veteran Memorial Festival was originally scheduled for April 16th, but Mother Nature was having her say with the weather, so the event was moved up to June 18th, and the weather was a lot nicer, even a little warm. The event is setup to pay tribute to our veterans, raise support for some of our veteran charities, and in honor of PO1 Joshua T. Harris, a local Navy Seal from Lexington, NC who lost his life in a nighttime river crossing in Afghanistan on Aug 30, 2008. The festivities started at the Davidson County Fairgrounds around 10am for families and supporters not going on the ride. The memorial ride started at the Plaza Shopping Center (old Wal-Mart location) off I-85 bus with a total of 200+ bikes registering for the approximately 85 mile ride through some of Davidson Counties scenic southern parts. The ride was escorted by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department Motorcycle

Patrol and also joined by several of the Patriot Guard Riders displaying our flags. The riders left the parking lot going out between two fire dept trucks with an American Flag suspended between them. What a heart-warming sight! The ride ended at the fairgrounds around 12:30 and was recognized, welcomed, and thanked for their support by Fred McClure. Meanwhile at the Davidson County Fairgrounds the day’s activities were already in motion. There were vendors selling items like funnel cakes, hotdogs, ice cream, frozen beverages and Lexington style Bar-B-Que. There were also vendors from several other organizations as well, selling and providing information about their services in the county. There was a bounce house for the children and a dunking booth sponsored by Central Davidson HS. There were also military vehicles and memorabilia on display and The Carolina Patriot Rovers had several of their canine friends there and were glad to answer any questions about their organization. There was also some $3000 worth of donated items being raffled off as well as the usual 50/50 raffle. The day’s entertainment was put on by singers Ken Davis and Scott Gibson at the exhibit hall entrance and several bands on the bandstand playing thru out the day. South Of Normal band played first, followed by the Jody Lee Petty band and ending with the Ross Coppley band. All in all, some pretty good music! Also, The Baddest Bike of the Carolinas bike show awarded trophies to winners of each class, from sport bikes, cruisers, touring, metric, and rat bikes. All the groups were pretty well represented. Garwood Custom Cycles of Lexington, who is also a cosponsor of the festival, had several of their custom bikes on display including their latest production, The Susan B. Komen Tribute Bike, which is being raffled off with only 200 tickets, a 1 in 200 chance, at $100 each. The proceeds are going to the NC Triad Affiliate of Susan B. Komen for the Cure organization. The day started winding down and the weather was once again threatening with a thunder and lighting display. So if you missed the JT Harris Veteran Memorial Festival this year, you can visit www.JTHMemorialRide.com and plan on attending the event next year for a great, worthy cause, put on by some wonderful people! Until we meet, ride safe and take care!

Always one to put on a show for the legion of Ray Price fans who come to witness the performance of the1,000 horsepower top fuel nitro Harley, the team once again did not disapoint. The Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored drag bike set the bar for the rest of the field on its very first qualifying pass with a incredable 6.344 ET at 228.77 mph. The time and speed held to give the team the number one qualifying spot for both ET and MPH. The difference between strong performances and wins is often decided by track condition and or lane choice. Going

into Sunday’s eliminations the team selected the right lane, (same lane the team ran the best qualifying time). With Tommy Grimes in the pilot’s seat, he posted a first round win with a 6.423 ET and an even more incredable 228.42 MPH. In the second round the team went back to the right lane based on the success of the previous round but a “bad spot” appeared to have developed at the 350 foot mark causing the Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored drag bike to spin tire preventing the team from moving into final round action. While disappointing, the team did post the fastest speed during eliminations with the 228.42 mph pass. Even with the early exit, Ray Price’s fans showed their gratitude for the team and a great show by standing and cheering them on as they came down the return road. “Rockingham is always an exciting race for the The Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored race team as we always want to put on the best show for our fans” remarked Price. Ray Price will get another chance to capture a win for the hometown fans when the team returns to Rockingham October 8-9. By: Troll Greetings and Salutations! It was a beautiful morning! I got an early start on my ride to the AMVETS in Port Royal, SC. It was just one of those days you didn’t want to hurry. It gave me time to think and reflect on what this day means. We all have had almost 10 years to think about all the people that gave their lives and limbs to keep America free and safe. Now it was our turn to help these men and women out. The Forgotten Sons MC held their 4th Annual Wounded Warrior Benefit Run on Saturday, 18 June 2011. The guys put on another great run! It all started out at the AMVETS in Port Royal, SC. The first stop was at the Sandbar Grill in Beaufort, SC, then on to Harold’s Country Club, and Schooner’s in Ridgeland, SC. From there it was on to Tailgators in Hardeeville, SC and ending up at the AMVETS. There was a BBQ Dinner and live music by Happy Gets Happy and DJ by Lucy. The total for the run was $5288. All proceeds will go to help offset travel and lodging expenses of one hundred severely injured veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan war and their caregivers to visit Beaufort the weekend of 14-18 September 2011. Gary Sinise and the Lieutenant Dan Band (http://www.LtDanBand.com) is scheduled for Friday, 16 September 2011 in the Beaufort Waterfront Park. If you are a severely injured vet with a 30% or greater disability rating or a Purple Heart recipient your registration fee will be waived. Go to www.independencefund.org to purchase tickets or contact Michael “Stork” Schwartz at 843-228-5549 M- F 7:30 - 4:00 or cell 843-252-3373 for more info. Story and photo by Alan Dockery The Spring Fling at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort, near Ferguson, NC, is one of my favorite parties of the year. By the middle of June the creek has warmed up a little so it’s comfortable to sit in and the weather is great for riding. Also, a few friends have a tradition of celebrating their birthdays there so I get to party with a bunch of folks from my area. Friday is kinda laid back as folks set up camp, hang out, and catch up on stories of spring rides and making plans for the summer. That night we had a blast singing karaoke to Mad Mike’s tunes. And it was cool to see and hear lots of folks jamming to all kinds of songs from country to rock to even a little old disco. I am surprised how many of us still have the moves (?). Saturday morning was kinda lazy as some folks chilled in the shade while others took off to ride the many nearby mountain roads including the Blue Ridge Parkway. Some of us spent part of the morning feeding the fish fresh worms. By the middle of the day it was getting hot, so we piled into the shallow part of the creek to cool off. You guys can sit in the shade while I get in the water with the bunch of girls that Dennis brought to The Roost. Folks started making rock stacks and Chickie made the biggest one that worked great as a table in the creek. That night we had a little rain shower. It was just enough to get a crowd at the pavilion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the band and Saturday night party rained out. Once it quit sprinkling, the popular Contagious Blues Band cranked it up and the party moved to the dance floor. One cool thing about Riders’ Roost is the “dance floor” happens to be the paved area at the entrance. So once in a while motorcycles coming and going ride through while we are jukin’ down front. There are more parties scheduled at Riders’ Roost this year so check out www.ridersroost.com and plan to come hang out with us. Also go to www.fullthrottlemagazine.com to see some more photos from the Spring Fling.

9/11 Flag Escort Ride
By: Mark Infield I read in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar that the 9/11 flag was coming through North Carolina on Sunday, July 3rd. I knew that this was not an opportunity that would present itself every weekend, so I rode to Ray Price Harley-Davidson in Raleigh, NC where it was making a stop on its way to Southport for their 4th of July parade and festival.
About The Flag The National 9/11 Flag is one of the largest American flags to fly above the wreckage at Ground Zero. It has become our generation’s Star-Spangled Banner. Destroyed in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks on September 11 and stitched back together seven years later by tornado survivors in Greensburg, Kansas, The National 9/11 Flag is a living testament to the resilience and compassion of the American people. The flag has been stitched by soldiers and schoolchildren who survived the shooting at Ft. Hood, Texas, by World War II veterans on the deck of the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor, by the family of Martin Luther King Jr., and by thousands of everyday service heroes nationwide. On President Lincoln’s Birthday, a piece of the flag that Abraham Lincoln was laid on when he was shot at Ford’s Theater was stitched into the fabric of The National 9/11 Flag. In May 2011, The National 9/11 Flag was presented as the official flag for The Kentucky Derby. Currently on a journey across America through the 10th Year Anniversary of 9/11, the goal of The National 9/11 Flag Tour is to display this historic flag at leading venues nationwide, to empower local service heroes in all 50 states with the privilege of stitching the flag back to its original 13-stripe format, and to inspire 300 million Americans with the flag’s rich visual history in order to deepen our sense of citizenship and national pride and bolster the spirit of volunteerism on the 9/11 Anniversary and year-round. When
complete, The National 9/11 Flag will become a part of the permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial Museum being built at the World Trade Center.
The Ride As I approached the South Saunders Street exit, I saw a police car and several motorcycles with their flashers on and I knew that was the flag arriving in Raleigh. I got gas and by the time I got to Ray Price Harley-Davidson, a crowd had gathered and they had the flag opened up. Many people were necessary to hold the 20’ x 30’ flag and many took pictures of the flag and the people holding it. There was an aura of emotion about the flag and when I touched it, it wasn’t enough. I had to clench it in my fist. I remembered seeing images of those who jumped out of the World Trade Center and those running before a huge cloud of dust. It was awesome! The group recited the Pledge Of Allegiance together and then under the direction of FDNY Fire Fighter Jimmy Sands, everyone helped refold the flag and place it in its carrying case. So we mounted up and About 100 motorcycles left Ray Price Harley-Davidson headed for the rest area on I-40 at Warsaw, NC. As we headed down I-40, there were fire trucks and fire fighters standing on the over passes at attention and saluting as we passed. As we passed fire stations, firefighters stood out front and saluted. After we arrived at the rest area, the flag was unfolded and many motorists that were using the rest area came over to see the flag. Again, the people unfolded and folded the flag and many pictures were taken. During this rest stop our number more than doubled. After about an hour, we headed out I-40 to 421 to 17 to our
next stop at Handee Hugo’s In Winnabow, NC. We were met there by what seemed to be every piece of EMT and Firefighting equipment in the area. Everyone looked sharp in their dress uniforms. After gassing up, a bathroom break and a cold drink, we were on the move again. We continued down 17 to 211 towards Southport for a ceremony.
www.FullThrottleMagazine.com
51
The Ceremony The ceremony took place at Cape Fear Memorial Park in Oak Island. As we parked and gathered at the flag pole in front of the masoleum we could hear people singing “America” and other patriotic songs. The flag was unpacked and the honor guard was positioned to deliver the flag to the table in front of the crowd who anxiously awaited its arrival. Rich Stewart, whose family lives in the area, died in the North Tower on 9-11. His father, Dick, and his mother, Joan Stewart and his sister, Susan Tiller, who emceed the ceremony, were instrumental in getting the 9-11 flag to come to Southport to be a part of their 4th Of July Festival. Mrs. Stewart designed a memorial for their son, which stands in the garden at the Cape Fear Memorial Park. The Mayor of Southport, Robert D. Howard, addressed the crowd and a representative of every religion in the area offered prayers and jointly blessed the flag. The fire fighters had a bell ringing ceremony called 5-55-5 where the bell is rung 5 times 4 times in succession. That is the signal that a firefighter lost his life in the line of duty. Afterwards taps were played. It was very moving. The flag was removed and taken to an open area where it was, once again, opened for all to see. The 911 flag was scheduled to be at the forefront of the July 4th parade in Southport the next day. It was also displayed at the naturalization ceremony for new American citizens. The flag was taken to the Southport Baptist Church’s Christian Ministry Center, where volunteers will assist visitors with stitching patches on the flag.
The Ride Home After the ceremony, I cruised into Southport because it just wouldn’t be right to leave without eating some fresh sea food. The Fishy Fishy Café fit the bill and I enjoyed their Scallop Curry Pasta before leaving for home around 7:30. It was a beautiful clear evening with temperatures in the mid 80’s so I pointed the Road King up 211 to 74 to 1 to 220 and home to High Point. What a ride! The traffic was light and I was by myself in my shirt sleeves. It was good for my soul. I got home around 11:30 and dinner was waiting on me. I was hungry and a couple of cold brewskies went down well. I clocked 520 miles and I was fading fast. I had the 4th of July with my family to look forward to. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I took it all in. Bros & Bro-ettes
Wanna hear some Sturgis stories? We have been going to the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis, SD for over twenty years now carrying Bibles, tracts, and free food and have had the opportunity to share the truth and love of Jesus Christ to many bikers. We’ve had so many breakdowns along the way that we know all the mechanics and their children at every truck stop! And we know every tire dealer in every town! But each breakdown has its own story. I can only share a few here. Once, driving along at night (I like to travel at night) all the lights went out on the motor home and on the trailer. I got off at the next exit and there was a truck stop. I pulled around to the garage and the mechanic, a young guy, came out to meet me. I explained the problem but he, just out of the blue, started sharing his personal problems and as we sat on a wall beside the motor home he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. I got in the motor home and all the lights worked and I never had another problem with them! I believe it was in 1993, when we left NC in a motor home pulling a trailer full of food and Ministry tents and only $100 to our name! This is absolutely true. The $100 never ran out! At every fuel stop someone was there to pay for the fuel, every single time! We stayed two weeks and fed the multitudes and came back with more food than we left with and the same $100 bill. I stopped one place to get fuel and I just knew it was the wrong place so I crossed a four-lane road to go to another station. As I was getting the fuel a guy came running up soaking wet and said, “Will you please make up your mind, the Lord told me to pay for your fuel.”
One of the places we set up at was across from the Broken Spoke bar. One year Big Dave was just out of prison and everyday he would stand outside the bar and curse me all day long and I would just say to him “Jesus loves You, Man” and he would curse louder. After the rally we packed up and went to a friend’s house in Sturgis to work on the motor home. The owners of the house where we set up had a ten year old daughter and her mother called and ask me to get there as quick as I could. When I pulled up, there sat the little girl on the sidewalk with her Bible open and Big Dave sitting there crying like a baby accepting Jesus as his Lord and Savior! And if you see Earl, owner of Antelope Creek Leather, ask him about coming into our Ministry tent as he was on his way to Deadwood to kill an employee who had stolen $10,000 and was there gambling. Two lives were saved that day when Earl accepted Jesus! And he is not ashamed to tell you about his Jesus! All though I still don’t like them, every breakdown has been a Ministry opportunity and every year has its own special testimonies. There are so many more maybe I can share them sometime. But what about your story? Many have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior right from this page in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle. Pray the Bikers Prayer on this page, mean it in your heart as you speak out to the Lord, and call or write and let us know. One day we may have some Full throttle Stories! IN “HIS” WIND

1st Annual Keep The Lights On Benefit Poker Run By: John M. Vaudo, Riders Director American Legion Riders Post 19 NC The American Legion Riders Post 19 N.C. held their 1st Annual Keep The Lights On Benefit Poker Run on Saturday June 18th. The proceeds of this run will ensure that the lights will remain on at the Veteran’s Memorial on US 258 S for at least another year and will help offset cost of sprucing up the memorial with fresh paint and landscaping. This ride also benefited the Post 19 building fund, which was established to help repair and reopen the American Legion Post 19 headquarters in Tarboro on US 258 N. Registration and first card was at Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson. The weather was perfect and many of our friends were ready to roll with the first bike out at 10am. The next stop was just a short distance away at the Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount. Leaving Jack Laughery Park riders enjoyed some open road and wind taking scenic NC 43 to Pinetops where they stopped at the Shell Station for their third card. From there it was on to the Veterans Memorial on US 258 for some ice cold water provided by ALR Post 19 NC members John Burgess, JR and Michele Johnson. From there it was on to the Tarboro Veterans Memorial for a fourth card and then on to George’s Club of Tarboro for the final card, great food, super cold beverages, and great fellowship. The last bikes left Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson at 1:00 and by 2:30 everyone had arrived at George’s Club. During a brief ceremony, the Legion Riders Post 19 NC Chapter presented a plague to CJ Webb for his dedication to maintaining the Memorial on US 258 S for several decades. We drew door prize tickets for the many door prizes that were donated by local business such as Ace Hardware of Tarboro (a leaf blower), Golden Corral of Rocky Mount (dinner for 2), Twin County Motorsports (A helmet, shirts, and bike cleaner) and a multitude of Harley-Davidson MotorClothes from various dealers throughout the state. Best poker hand went to Ed Costello ALR Post 19 NC member and a member of American Legion Post 13 in Wilson, Worst Hand went to Joe Zickmunn ALR Post 39, and Brian Skipper won the 50/50 drawing. We would like to thank the nearly 50 riders that participated in this event. We would also like to thank to great folks at Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson, the helpful employees at the Shell Station in Pinetops, McLane Carolina, Fred’s Food Club, Al Keel and the great staff at George’s Club. A big THANK YOU to members of Post 19 NC for their hard work and dedication. We also want to recognize and thank the members of The Rocky Mount HOG Chapter, the Tar River Basin Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of NC, and George & Melanie Johnson of George’s club of Tarboro. The event raised just over $800 and we have started preplanning for the 2nd Annual Keep the Lights On Benefit Poker Run where we will build on the things that went well and
refine the areas that need improvement. Please visit us at www.alr-post19nc.org where you will find more information about our Chapter and the American Legion. ou may also make donations via our online donations area on the site. We look forward to seeing everyone again soon - in the mean time, please ride safe and remember all the Veterans that have sacrificed to keep us free. For God and Country; Still Riding Still Serving.

By: Jeff Deal Asheville has some of the best firefighters in the country and the Women’s Combat Challenge Team proved that last year when they placed 3rd in the world in competition. The team name is Fuel and each year the team pays it’s own way to these events, which are televised on ESPN. Team members are Joy Poncler, Ashely Hamilton, Sarah Gilger, Haley Martin, and Kelly Webb and they are training now for qualifying in Charleston, West Virginia. The finals will be in Myrtle Beach in November. Firefighters are always under appreciated and this is a way for them to show the world just how good they are. This year’s ride consisted of a poker run, a 50/50 drawing and free food. The ride left Asheville heading to Lake Lure, then thru waterfall country and finishing up at Mack Kells for food and drink. The grand prize, won by Gordon Silvers, an Asheville fire fighter, was a stay at the Grove Park Inn Resort with breakfast. They also raffled off some other great prizes like gift certificates from Applebee’s, Aacross The Skin Tattoo, Papa’s and Beer, Westville Pub, Neo Cantina, Asaka, and the Biltmore Estate. Kelley Webb put this ride together and is already looking for ideas for next year’s ride. If you would like to help call Kelley at 828-768-1437.

By: ChromeDoll TriStar Insurance Services is locally owned and operated by biker, Rodney Stewart. Rodney has been in the insurance business since 2000 and in 2007, TriStar Insurance opened its doors in Dunn, NC. The agency offers personal & small commercial, trucking, and farm insurance as well as life and health products. Their mission is to provide quality insurance products at affordable prices. TriStar is an independent insurance agency, which means they represent many different insurance companies. This allows them to shop the market to find just the right insurance product to fit your needs. Since Rodney is a biker himself, he knows how important it is for a biker to have the proper coverage. Does your bike have aftermarket chrome, custom paint, etc.? If so, your current policy may not cover these items. A lot of insurance companies insure motorcycles on car insurance policies. YOUR MOTORCYCLE IS NOT A CAR, SO DON’T INSURE IT ON AN AUTO INSURANCE POLICY. Some of us love to have those extras put on our bike to make it look like the hottest piece of machinery out there. But if something was to happen to the bike, and you didn’t have the right type of coverage, all those extras will not be covered. We’re talking about chrome coverage, helmet coverage and even those leather chaps we wear in the winter. Give Rodney a call or email him to let him check your insurance needs out for you. You can also find him on the web at www.nctristar.com or on Facebook. And a bit of insurance humor for you! A young man walked into Rodney’s office to purchase coverage for his new motorcycle. While filling out the insurance application, Rodney asked the young man, “Do you have a lien holder on the vehicle?” The young man replied, “I’ve got a kickstand, is that the same thing?” Who says Insurance can’t be funny?

Annual Wounded Warrior Run 4624 Bragg Blvd. Fayetteville, NC
Home Of The Gypsy Women th
Sun, Aug 28
By: Giselle AKA Bad Kitten June 11th, 11 am, Roger and I headed out to JR’s Tavern, on Greensboro Rd. in High Point, to participate in Mama Kris and Barry’s annual Wounded Warrior Run. The weather was sunny and hot as blazes but conducive to a good poker run. We got there early, but bikes were pulling in with us, and there were quite a few bikes there already. Since kickstands weren’t going up til noon, there was plenty of time to register, have a Break Out Your Tie-Dye! cold one, and socialize a bit. Linda Chadwick and Alene Brown were in charge of regSupport Rape Crisis istration and selling raffle tickets and Terry Jo was selling tickets for the 50/50 drawing. Noon rolled around and we all gathered outside for last minute directions from our For More Info Contact Legends Pub road captain, Barry Glenn and prayer for safe passage to and from our destinations. Kickstands up and we headed to American Legion Post 87 in High Point, where we Legends Is A Next Door To had a cold one and snacks set up for us by the Legion. The temperature was getting Private Club Hot Hog Leather hotter and the air was getting muggier as we headed from Post 87 to the Full Throttle Bar in Randleman. There were 51 bikes and 4 cages on this run. Hillbilly and Terry Jo http://groups.yahoo.com/group/legendspub/ were driving the support vehicle. Luckily no one needed help except Barry; he had to postpone our departure time at the start to get a substitute bike, because his was giving him problems. Other than that everything went according to plan. Full Throttle Bar is a really nice place with lots of air conditioning, which we all $ needed at the time and some yummy frozen drinks to help cool you off. Once everyWith Coupon one was cooled off we loaded up and headed to the Hideaway to McLeansville, where Tanya and the girls made us welcome and served us up cold drinks. We hung there for a Hours: Mon-Sat: 11am-8pm while trying to cool off before heading back to JR’s, which was our final destination. As we ran the last leg of the run, it was getting hotter (if that was possible), and the sky was starting to look like it just might rain. We felt a couple of drops as we got to Jamestown, but it held off till everyone was back inside JR’s before the sky opened up. It was a really fun run and a great cause. We put on some miles and I am so glad that I got to be part of it. Once inside, we proceeded to draw our poker hands and relax. There was a pigpickin’ with all the sides. Thank you, Fatback, for providing the pig. Live music by Wild Country, a 50/50 drawing, raffle and an auction helped raise funds for our wounded veterans. All the winners of poker hands and 50/50 prize money donated it back to the cause. I want to thank Pete from RH Barringer, Wayne from IH Caffey, Riley, Shady Kim, and everyone else for donations for the auction and raffle. We raised over $2400 for our wounded warriors. I also want to thank everyone who participated in this run, as well as, American Legion Post 87, Full Throttle Bar and the Hideaway for their support. Mama Kris and Barry want to thank everyone for making this a successful fundraiser and run. Also, a BIG THANK YOU to ALL those in the Armed Forces past and present. By: Caroline When Pastor Bill Baird issued a challenge invitation to come to his church on July 10th, I decided to take him up on it. I met Pastor Bill through friends from the American Legion Riders and I soon discovered that he has a special place in his heart for bikers as well as those serving in the military and veterans and wants to share his message. Bethel United Methodist Church, located on Highway 66 in King, NC, is a wonderful church. To me, that seems that perfect location to stop by on a Sunday morning. One can easily head towards the Parkway, afterwards. However, my intent in visiting Bethel was to see if this church was one that a biker could find a place to worship. I was not disappointed and was warmly welcomed by all that was there - even those who obviously did not ride a motorcycle - and was asked to come back. But that was not all - Pastor Bill’s message was simple yet thought provoking: “Thirsty Lips And A Thirsty Heart”, comparing Christ’s statement in John 19:28 to our own needs from Him. Pastor Bill has a lot of future plans for his Church including a rally; so keep watching for more good things to come. I hope that if you are looking for a place to worship with biker friendly folks you will visit Bethel United Methodist Church. They would love to have you and I think that you will be glad if you gave them a try.

Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury Tent Sale And Million Mile Monday Events
By: Grant Let me just ask you this question, “What does YOUR HarleyDavidson dealer do for YOU? Tilley Harley-Davidson wants your business and goes the extra mile to prove it. I can start you on a recent couple week’s tour. On June 27th, Harley-Davidson promotes Million Mile Monday, wanting riders throughout the Harley world to keep track of your miles on that one day. At Tilley H-D in Salisbury they started the morning for all riders with breakfast of biscuits, juice, and coffee. Then off we went. Tilley’s HOG Chapter had at least 3 different routes planed depending on how many miles you were able to ride. When the ridding was done, you could come by and get a certificate printed out with your mileage for the day and enjoy lunch or an early dinner. Dinner had hotdogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings. On Saturday July 9, 2011 was the giant tent extravaganza sale with East Coast Wings, the AHDRA simulator, a band, and some extra vendors. The big draw for some was a couple new 2012 bikes displayed on the show room. The nice lady pictured in the photo said she was tired of riding in the rear and was ready to take the next step. On July 16th Tilley HD of Salisbury held their 2012 Demo Days. Fast Freddie Thompson was on hand DJing for the event. Free hot dogs and cold drinks were inside the showroom where you could eat and sign up to ride. All bikes were on hand to

Cindy’s Birthday Hawaiian Extravaganza And Bike Show
By: Scott Wicker For the second weekend in a row, on Saturday, July 9th, The Other Place in Burlington held another fantastic bike show in conjunction with Cindy’s Birthday Party And Hawaiian Extravaganza. As expected, the parking lot was full of bikes and the show bikes got the V.I.P. treatment by getting to park under the cover of the rear bar area. Participants with their bikes came in and entered all the way up to the 5pm cut off. There was even a couple that traveled all the way from Ohio to be at the event. All participants received the traditional Hawaiian lei as did the other customers coming in for Cindy’s Party. Lamont and his staff had the grill fired up with all sorts of great food and music played all day for everyone’s enjoyment. Bike show judging began promptly at 6 and all the participants were anxious for the results. As usual, everyone had a great time at the show and many throughout the evening enjoyed the birthday party for Cindy. We would like to thank Lamont and all his great staff for their hospitality and another fun filled day at The Other Place. Congratulation to all the winners and top-finishers of the show. The Winners and top-finishers are as follows. BEST SPORT HARLEY: 1st Place - Dumpling. BEST CUSTOM BIKE: 1st Place - Jason Street. 2nd Place Morris Barrier. By Alan Dockery, Photo by Jessica Walker There’s a cool new bar in Western North Carolina, near Statesville, that y’all need to visit next time you’re riding back from the mountains or just in the area - Pappy’s Pub. Biker owned and operated by Bert and Kalma Ball, Pappy’s Pub has been open since March and offers the best prices around on cold beer and pool tables. “It’s kind of a funny story how we ended up with the bar,” Kalma said. “We were actually looking for somewhere to have a birthday party and we ended up buying a bar. It was just meant to be, it literally fell in our laps.” Pappy’s Pub is more than just a friendly bar to visit and cool off for a beer stop. It’s a place where you can spend the evening and greet your friends as they stop by. They also have a large backyard for people to come out and enjoy icecold beer on a warm summer night under the stars, with occasional live music and dancing out back as well. On weekends they offer smoked ribs, and pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, homemade macaroni salad, your great-grandmother’s made-from-scratch baked beans and homemade banana cupcakes. Keep this place in mind when you need to plan a party or looking for a great poker run stop. “Our goal for Pappy’s Pub is simple. We want a good time for everyone, we want it to be a local hangout for everyone, especially bikers,” Kalma said. “We do live music every Saturday night. So far we’ve had: The Troubadors, Cold Society, Southern Justice, Rough Around the Edges and Sista T and the Smoking Section. We really are trying to offer something for everyone. We will be starting cornhole tournaments in the backyard soon.” The middle of June they had the Grand Opening Party and really blew it out with bands Saturday and Sunday. Saturday night included Uncle Roy’s comedy show and a wet t-shirt contest. Congrats to the winner Elysa Foster and runner-up Cesely Brown. Pappy’s wants to be known for Southern hospitality, ice-cold beer and great music. When asked what he liked about Pappy’s, Mark Hudnall said, “It’s literally a neighborhood bar. I love Bert and Kalma, they’re great folks. It’s a great atmosphere, a place where you can go to really let your hair down and have a good time. If you want a place to go to have a great time, listen to good music, eat some fantastic ribs or pork sandwiches, then Pappy’s Pub is where you go.” “Great people, good times, it don’t get any better than that,” said Wayne Simmons of Southern Justice. Tuesday at Pappy’s Pub is Poker Night. Bike Night is Wednesday and ladies get half-price beer. Thursday and Sunday they have pool tournaments. Fridays it’s beer pong and karaoke. Live music starts at 9 on Saturday nights. For fun y’all can play hillbilly golf, darts, and cornhole, too.

FULL THROTTLE MAGAZINE
www.FullThrottleMagazine.com The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!! A good ol’ Alabama boy won a bass boat in a raffle drawing. He brought it home and his wife looks at him and says, “What you gonna do with that? There ain’t no water deep enough to float a boat within 100 miles of here.” He says, “I won it and I’m gonna keep it.” His brother came over to visit several days later. He sees the wife and asks where his brother is. She says, “He’s out there in his bass boat”, pointing to the field behind the house. The brother heads out behind the house and sees his brother sitting in a bass boat with a fishing rod in his hand down in the middle of a big field. He yells out to him, “What are you doing?” His brother replies, “I’m fishing. What does it look like I’m doing?” His brother yells, “It’s people like you that give people from Alabama a bad name, makin’ everybody think we is stupid. If I could swim, I’d come out there and whip your ass!” A police recruit was asked during the exam, “What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?” He answered, “Call for backup.” Two Middle East mothers are sitting in a cafe chatting over a plate of tabouli and a pint of goat’s milk. The older of the two pulls a small folder out of her handbag and starts flipping through photos. They start reminiscing. ‘’This is my oldest son, Mujibar. He would have been 24 years old now.’’ ‘’Yes, I remember him as a baby.’’ says the other mother cheerfully. “He’s a martyr now, though.” the mother confides. “Oh, so sad dear...’’ says the other. ‘’And this is my second son, Khalid. He would have been 21.’’ ‘’Oh,

I remember him,’’ says the other happily, ‘’He had such curly hair when he was born.’’ ‘’He’s a martyr, too...’’ says the mother quietly. ‘’Oh, gracious me...’’ says the other. ‘’And this is my third son. My baby, my beautiful Ahmed. He would have been 18’’, she whispers. “Yes,” says the friend enthusiastically, ‘’I remember when he first started school...’’ ‘’He’s a martyr, also,’’ says the mother, with tears in her eyes. After a pause and a deep sigh, the second mother looks wistfully at the photographs and, searching for the right words, says . . .”They blow up so fast, don’t they?”

he calls it a song, and they give him $100.” The third boy says, “I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight people to collect all the money!” A man spoke frantically into the phone: “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart,” “Is this her first child?” the doctor asked. “No,” the man shouted, “This is her husband!”
On a flight getting ready to depart for Detroit, Jack was sitting on the plane when a guy took the seat beside him. Lonesome Pine Cabins Beat The Heat - Ride The Mountains! LOG CABINS FEATURE:
•Bedside Fireplace •Two-Person Jacuzzi •Views For Miles
By: Caroline This is a ride that is held each year by the American Legion Riders from Post 55 in Winston-Salem, NC. This year as I participated, I reflected on the reason we do this. The main objective is to have funds available to assist Veterans or even those who are still serving, who might have a need, to help with bills or with any other urgent assistance that we can provide. It does not seem fair that men and women in our armed forces past and present do not receive an equal or better compensation in exchange for all they have sacrificed. Sadly that is not the case. Many of these men, women, and their families are dependent on food stamps or other subsidies to survive. Many Veterans are in need of so much; from medical care, transportation, or even a place to live. This year, we raised $530 when we met to ride on Saturday, June 18. We rode to the AmVets post 845 where Joe Clay presented us with a check. After we returned to Post 55, everyone had a great meal, and our game winners were announced. Congratulations to Ken Lewis won the best poker hand and Mike Durgarian who won the worst poker hand. Jim Hart won the 50/50 drawing and Dale Hauser who won the Bug Run. If you missed this opportunity to help our service men and women in the military, the ALR from Post 55 have more events scheduled. Just keep checking the Cruisin’ Calendar here in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.

3rd Annual Gaston CBA 4th Of July Independence Day Helmet Law Protest Ride
By: Bill “Blastoff” Starnes July 4th started out hot and stayed hot all day. However, the heat was not sufficient to keep the CBA/ABATE of NC members off the road. We met at the Roses shopping center parking lot, as scheduled, beginning at 12:00. By the time we rolled out at 1:00 for our 3rd Annual 4th of July Independence Day Helmet Law Protest Ride we had approximately 67 motorcycles in our group that included members of Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland and Cabarrus/Rowan CBA Chapters. Some wore helmets, most did not. We planned to ride through four Gaston County municipalities. We made it through Belmont, the first city on our route. As we were sitting at the stop sign in Cramerton, in front of their town hall and police department, a rider came up to let us know some of the bikes at the rear of the pack had been pulled over in Belmont. We immediately made a u-turn and headed back to Belmont. Sure enough, there they were, right in the middle of downtown Belmont. We found parking spaces and went over to the police car and let the officer know we would ALL be wanting a ticket. In just a few minutes, a couple of more Belmont officers showed

up. Then the NC Highway Patrol showed up. Next the Gaston County Police Department and the Cramerton Police Department came by. Eventually, we had a total of 15 police cars sitting in downtown Belmont with all their lights flashing and the officers walking around scratching their heads. We were ready with our license and registration cards in hand, however, the LEO’s would not accept them. Finally, they decided they would just write tickets to the 5 they originally pulled over and allow the rest of us to leave, with our helmets on our heads. We refused the offer and demanded equal treatment for all who were riding sans (without) helmet. They said they only saw the 5 without helmets. We got on our bikes, without helmets, made a couple of uturns on Main Street and parked behind the police cars, license and registration cards in our hands. They still would not take them. We were firm in our demands: tickets for all or tickets for none. They talked it over again then made the same offer as before. Our answer was also the same: give us all a ticket and we would put our helmets on and be on our way. Otherwise, we would leave without helmets and continue our quest for the elusive ticket. They talked it over again. Bottom line, 67 motorcycles, 15 police cars, 30 minutes of negotiations and we left with no helmets and no tickets. We rode on through Belmont, Cramerton, Lowell and part of Gastonia arriving at Hooters for the party and live music and we had a mighty fine celebration! YA’LL SHOULDA BEEN THERE! It was awesome. I’m stilling smiling so big my face hurts. Man, I love my CBA Brothers and Sisters!

IN HOUSE CUSTOM PAINT FULL SERVICE DEPARTMENT Lindsey Dowling, Chairperson-Americanism Greensboro Elk’s Lodge #602 The Americanism Committee at the Greensboro Elk’s Lodge #602 held it’s annual Flag Day Poker Run on June 18th. The proceeds from the Poker Run benefits the American Flags for Classrooms Project. This project aims to ensure every classroom and school in Guilford County has an American Flag. The Americanism Committee also uses the proceeds to respectfully retire any and all flags that have served and are now out of commission. They have a retirement ceremony for those flags every November. Close to 100 riders came out to enjoy the day. Everyone helped by making donations through registration, a 50/50 raffle, door prize raffles and t-shirt sales. The ride began with the Pledge of Allegiance and then the riders were off. The ride set out at noon. Their first stop was the High Point Elk’s Lodge where riders were met with a moving Flag Day Ceremony and then hot dogs were provided by the lodge. The next stop was Bimini’s in Greensboro where everyone enjoyed the beach atmosphere and a break from the heat. Afterwards, the riders set off for the last stop on the ride, Steel Horse Saloon, where there was an open house featuring bands, specials, and a fantastic time. Then the clouds started rolling in and the race was on to make it back the Greensboro Lodge for a spaghetti dinner and the announcement of the winners before the storm. The Poker Run raised over $3,100 for the project. All in the entire ride was a great time across the board. The Americanism Committee in collaboration with the Elk’s Riders Group would like to thank everyone who came out for the ride and helped promote our program. A big thank you goes out to all the companies and groups who made donations for our raffles. We would especially like to thank the Greensboro American Legion for sponsoring our ride as well as the Marine Riders Group and Robert Greear for their monetary donations. We would also like to thank all of our members for their hard work and dedication throughout the entire process as well as Michael Hill for covering our event. We are looking forward to another school year in which all students in Guilford will have the opportunity to learn about Old Glory, and pledge their allegiance to America. See you next summer!

By: Doc I rode with several hundred members of the Patriot Guard Riders today to escort Lance Corporal Nicholas O’Brien home to his family. This is a short summary of the events today as I saw it. Family and friends gathered today to welcome home a true American Hero. They gathered in a private hangar near the Charlotte airport. Instead of a happy event, this one was filled with sadness. As the small private jet is pulled into the hangar, the family sits quietly. There are six marines standing by to escort 21 year old Lance Corporal Nicholas O’Brien from the jet. Nearby, fellow soldiers are standing at attention and saluting their brother who has returned home from Afghanistan. All around the outer walls of the hangar several hundred American flags are being held tall by members of the Patriot Guard Riders, who have gathered to honor this hero. As Nicholas O’Brien is carried to the car that will take him home to Gastonia, the only sound in the room is of the footsteps of the Marines who are helping him home. No one hears the tears that fall. No one hears the silent questions wondering why. No one hears the heart-felt sorrow and gratitude that everyone present feels. The procession leaves the airport and makes its way towards Gastonia, over 200 motorcycles and cars follow along behind. Thousands of people line the streets along the way holding American flags, waving and cheering for this son returning home. The father of this young man shook the hands of several of riders today and said “Thank You”. Nicholas stood on the enemy line for America. It was an honor to stand for Nicholas. Those in attendance today are humbled by his patriotism and love for his country. We are proud of Nicholas. He will always be remembered. America has a new hero. His name is Nicholas O’Brien.

It has patches and pins that define who I am, I wear it with pride. The pins reflect places I have been to and seen. The patches are of my riding club, my rider name and there’s one to honor fallen Marines. I also have a leather vest that’s set up in its own unique way, but my denim vest has taken on a special meaning on this hot June day. You see it is when I met this person a few years ago, that was wearing a blue denim vest whom I came to know. As he wore the vest, he looked cool and keen. He had a nostalgic look, similar to James Dean. It was unique and different, unlike all the rest. It was then that I decided to buy a blue denim vest. He passed away this very day and why so young, there is no answer. I pray as many do that there will be a cure for the disease known as cancer. I’ll always wear my blue denim vest with pride, remembering my friend as I ride. The next time you hear the sound of rolling thunder, it may well be my friend Kevin as he rides his shiny Harley through the Pearly Gates of Heaven. RIP Kevin Winter
