am writing this LFE the week before Thanksgiving and it gives me cause to reflect on several things. First of all, I AM thankful. I am thankful for all the material possessions that God has given me. I am thankful for my job, my wife, family, and friends. I am thankful that I live in the USA, for our veterans, and for you. I am thankful for my health. We have already ridden on several toy runs and benefits that make me grateful that I can contribute to someone else’s happiness. It makes me humble to ride a $20,000 motorcycle to support those less fortunate. Sometimes it is hard to look at the children and imagine myself in their circumstances as I ride back home. They smile. We smile. God smiles. The gifts are just a token of love. Our love, representing God’s Love, given freely to those who have done nothing to earn it. They accept the gifts without knowing who gave them. It goes without saying that we expect nothing in return. Can there be a parallel between the big-hearted bikers and the Love of God? I think there is. But is it for them or us that the drama illustrates the story of unconditional love? I think both. Riding to a destination to present toys or a donation helps us relate to God’s love for mankind. He is, as we are, happy to give. Unconditionally. The only thing that is required is acceptance of the gift. It is paid for. It is delivered. It is free! On the day that Jesus Christ was born, the angels knew, the shepherds knew, and soon, kings knew. They were forced to make a choice. Was this the Messiah that was prophesied? Some proclaimed Him the “King of Kings”. Others were skeptical. As history often repeats itself, many are faced with this same question everyday. Christmas, in its purest form, is the acknowledgement that the birth of Christ was, indeed, the Gift of God to mankind. Our gifts to each other are symbolic of His love. I hope that all this symbolism will point you to the best gift ever; God’s Love. Bikers are big on freedom. This is freedom, big time! Then comes New Year’s Eve. Out with the old, in with the new. A new beginning? Yes! Symbolic? Maybe, it depends on you. I hope that you will resolve to take that step, accept God’s love and become a new creature in Him. May God bless you and may your holidays be the best ever.

Nazareth Children’s Home 4th Quarter Birthday Party / Cookout

By: Darby L. Dillard The weather was a bit on the border of “to ride or not to ride” as this was the Saturday that Hurricane Sandy was going by the Carolina coast. But the weather held off for us and it couldn’t have been a better day for riding! Not to hot and not to cold and the sun was peeking through a high layer of thin clouds. It’s amazing to me how these parties keep on getting better and better. The only way I can explain it is that there is definitely a blessing to be had if you just come and receive it. I would like to thank Pat Roger’s Speedway H-D, The Buffalo Troopers, and all of our regulars who always attend, for their continued support! The picture with this article is just some of the people who are involved. We always have a wonderful group of people from the Rockwell area to meet us at the home. Plus my wife Betty and a group of her friends (I call them her gang) always get things prepared by the time the bikers arrive at the home from Pat Roger’s Speedway H-D in Concord, NC. If you haven’t ever come with us to the home, the children at the home would love to see you and we could use your sup-

On a very important and sad side note Pong Wilbourn, part of a wonderful couple I met at the home has passed away. Her husband Greg is left with two young children and Pong also has two older children. These are special people as I only met them a few times but I am very saddened by our loss. There is a foundation for Pong Wilbourn (Team Pong Fund) at Wells Fargo Bank. Please think about it and follow your heart. God bless!

Spruce Pine Moose Riders Support Shop With A Cop

The day’s events also included, raffles, door prizes, a corn hole championship and lots and lots of fried chicken. The Moose Riders brought in nearly $3,000 in their first run for the program. Donated toys and the funds that were raised went to the Shop With A Cop program. The program helps to provide winter coats and clothing to children in need in Mitchell County. With the riders still excited about the success of the fundraiser, plans are already being made for next year’s event. The next event for the Spruce Pine Moose Riders will be for the handicapped/disabled citizens in Mitchell County, which will help with their basic needs during the holiday season.

With a beautiful sunny day in the mountains came an awesome ride beginning at Spruce Pine Fire and Rescue, and going to Bakersville, Red Hill, and on to Burnsville, stopping for a short break along the South Toe then back to Spruce Pine.

Biketoberfest At Thunder Tower

By: WildThing It was indeed a pleasure to visit Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson in Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday, October 13th for the first day of their two-day Biketoberfest. The showroom was filled with beautiful, gleaming, new and used motorcycles and the sales staff busy showing them off to inquiring customers. There was a party spirit affecting the whole dealership from the balloons in the showroom to the big-top tents outdoors. Picking up a schedule, one noted the variety bands listed to entertain the crowd all day as well as a variety of other activities. There were two group rides each day sponsored by the Thunder Riders H.O.G. Chapter who also had a canopy set up on the patio outside the front door for members to relax in the shade and possibly sign up new members. The Thunder Riders posed for a group shot with their trophy from the SC HOG Rally in the afternoon. Meanwhile the Buffalo Soldiers were in the side lot registering motorcycles and classic cars vying for trophies to be awarded in the afternoon. Deputy Trey Wade and Deputy Chris Wells from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Department put on a safety skills demonstration at 1pm. They had set up cones and were executing tight turns and figure eights around the cones and dragging their footboards, as the speed and angle of the turns were so sharp. Trey announced that this was a demonstration of the versatility of Harleys as well as showcasing skills to keep riders safe on the roads. Of course, these guys ride for work, so they have to hone their skills to stay alive when bad things or inclement weather involves them while on shift. They demonstrated a “140º pull out” to show how to get out of a tight parking spot. It behooves all motorcycle riders to practice good riding skills every time they ride and that is the reason these deputies go around demonstrating the right way to do it. They also demonstrated the proper way to pick up a motorcycle that is tipped over on the engine guards and without injuring yourself. All the while there were bands performing on the stage

under a shade tent and there were food vendors enticing folks with wonderful aromas of wings and BBQ! Tables and chairs were set up under an adjoining tent in front of the stage to relax, have a bite to eat, and enjoy the music. In the yard next to the service department side of the building there was a giant slide, bounce house, and also a rock-climbing wall that attracted the younger generation and was busy all afternoon. Also on that side of the building the service department had a tent set up and were offering parts and accessories for sale and they had a lift set up for minor service. Back to Rider’s Edge practice lot on the other side of the building, which was by now parked full of motorcycles and show bikes and cars, the stunt team of Leah Petersen and Aaron Twite were revving their engines and attracted a huge crowd as they took turns and performed several stunts including burnouts and stoppies. At each round they would come barreling down toward the spectators and at the last second swerve, screech the tire and stop on a dime! Everyone was busy watching and trying to catch them with cameras and phones. Late in the afternoon, Gene Preston and his son, Chris, owners of Thunder Tower took to the stage at a band break to call everyone over to award the trophies. In the bike show, 3rd Place went to Tunita Dome for her unique green trike, 2nd went to Terry Roe for his ‘blue pearl’, and 1st Place went to Odell Jenkins for his ‘Godfather’ theme bike. In the car show, 3rd Place was awarded to Gary Davis for his Hall of Fame Edition Dale Earnhardt Camaro, 2nd to Ray Montoya for his vintage gold fastback Mustang, and 1st to Jay Britton’s 69 Camaro. The big daddy 5’ tall Best of Show trophy was awarded to Scott Ward from Greenwood, SC for his one-of-akind custom dresser. Apparently it is ridden daily, but it didn’t have a speck on it! Scott, after posing for pictures with his trophy showing off the custom paint job, wowed the crowd by starting it up and shooting fire out of the tailpipe! It was a great day and was sure to be repeated on Sunday. Gene Preston and his family and staff sure do know how to entertain and look after the needs of a large crowd. From the food, cold beverages, music, vendors, and entertainment, all came together to make for a very successful day. The event was held at Christine’s Place on Verner Springs Road and was attended by seven supporting clubs. Biker brothers came from Georgia and all parts of the Carolinas to help celebrate their anniversary. One of the reasons for the support is the community spirit displayed by the Highway Dogs RC. Recently the club held a benefit for the Children’s Hospital that was a great success. A large donation was raised to directly benefit the children at the hospital. A Day Of Great Riding And Helping A Cause By Rose and Lloyd The season is upon us when there are all kinds of charities and people in need. The bikes come out in numbers and always help out the cause. On Saturday November 10th United Riders Riding Club spent the whole day making our community better and our riders safer. United Riders is a group of friends and family who enjoy riding and the time spent making memories with the group. We care about the community and its needs trying to help make a difference in a positive way. I am sure many of you have seen us at different events. Our one goal is to have a good and safe ride each time we get on our bikes. We started out the day with Parking Lot Practice At Creekside Park in Archdale. Every so often we get together and we go over road signs, hand signals, and caution signs that we use to keep us, and any group around us, safe. It is a lot of fun, because we are not on the bikes; we are standing in formation and going over different situations of “what ifs”, and how to react. It is informative, and we all enjoy the socialization. If you’ve seen us ride, it just looks down right pretty, and very professional. After practice then we took a short ride doing some highway and back street riding to test out what we had learned. Then, as every time two or more of the group gets together, we went somewhere and eat. After lunch we went back to Creekside Park and joined some people in cages. Then our journey and cause for the day really began. There were approximately 16 bikes and some riders and two cages. We went to United Methodist Church on Ward Street in High Point. This is the Ward Street Mission. We took two truckloads of toys and coats to donate to the Mission. We even had Santa for all the children to enjoy. The Ward Street Mission toy drive is arranged by Becky Cannon, They work through the church to try and ensure that

every child in the low-income part of town gets a Christmas. They try to make Christmas special for an average of 600 children. It was such a rewarding day to spend time with friends and then to see the looks of these children and people as we loaded them down with toys. They will take slightly used toys and clothes and any donations, so if you have anything please contact Becky at 336-848-5498. Dot, Bob & Ginny B Memorial Ride By David Cornelius & Introduction by Caroline Eight years ago when my friend, David Cornelius started this ride to benefit Hospice and Palliative Care Center, it was for his wife’s Mother, Ginny. Over the years it has become a memorial for his own Mother, and Father-in-law as well. When I asked David how he was able to put such a great ride together each year despite all the heartache he said, “Loving and caring so much for these three wonderful people is what makes me do it every year. I sincerely wish that each of the riders had been able to meet my Mom, Bob, and Ginny. All three of them, along with a few others, helped mold me into the person that I am today. So, organizing the ride is so very easy for me. Terri and I get to thank Hospice and spread the love, kindness, and grace that our parents instilled in us. As long as their memory is alive in us and the riders, they will always be with us.” Honda of Winston-Salem was the starting point this year. Honda of W-S provided the riders with hot coffee, juice, and Chick-fil-A chicken biscuits. Each rider received a t-shirt, helmet bag, door prize tickets, and later on, a BBQ Chicken lunch. Riders from all over North Carolina and even Tennessee participated in the event. Each rider had their own reason for riding today and for the vast majority, it was to give back to the organization that helped them during a hard time in their lives or they rode to honor the memory of those that had passed on in the care of Hospice. The assistance that Hospice provides to the patients and the families is invaluable and this is a great way to give back to them. At the end of the day, the riders (32 motorcycles and 45 riders) had ridden approximately 50 miles and raised over $1500 for the Hospice & Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem. By: dpapabear On Saturday, Nov 10, 2012, I had the chance to attend a ride for a longtime resident of Lexington, JoAnn Wilson, who was diagnosed in September with throat/tongue cancer and lymph node cancer and is currently undergoing chemo treatments. Jo has worked in the healthcare field for over 20 years helping and taking care of others. This ride was a way for the community and friends to give back to a very caring and giving lady. And the warm and beautiful day could not have been any better suited for riding. The Time Out Hut in Lexington was host for the ride with stops along the way at Ted’s Chicken, Baggerz Saloon, and JB’s Sports Bar, where we were served hotdogs with all the trimmings, and ending back at The Time Out Hut. There we had the 50/50 drawing and dozens of door prizes given away. There was also a drawing at each stop for a prize as well. The South of Normal Band also entertained us throughout the rest of the evening. Several people brought in more snacks and desserts to The Time Out Hut as well. We would certainly like to THANK each one who took part, each business who helped with the stops and who donated the door prizes, to help make this a great day to help relieve some of the stress and suffering for Jo. THANKS to all! All the proceeds raised will go to help with the medical expenses. DECEMBER SPECIAL: By Jay Phares Blue skies and sunshine greeted the 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Day at Harley-Davidson of Greenville, SC on November 10, 2012. Roiling Thunder SC Chapter 5 attended along with the American Legion Riders. The event began at 10am and registration for the poker run to benefit Roiling Thunder continued until 11am. The opening ceremony consisted of “Prayer for the Riders”, the presentation of The Colors, the National Anthem, and the Pledge of Allegiance. All attending veterans were presented with a challenge coin commemorating the day. Roll out for the poker run started at 11:30 and last bike in was at 2:30PM. Live music from 1:00PM to 4:00PM and the winners of the poker run, raffle and 50/50 drawing were announced. Rolling Thunder had a large display of military articles from WW1 to present. They also had a large amount of information on Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, US Army, the only POW in Afghanistan. One of the primary functions of Rolling Thunder is to promote information to the public concerning our POW’s /MIA’s. Sgt. Bergdahl has been in captivity since June 30, 2009. You would think that a news event of this magnitude would be on the front page of every paper in the US. Thank you Rolling Thunder for bringing this to the attention of the biker community in Greenville, SC. Since talking with Kathleen Avouris of Rolling Thunder, I have found a lot of information on Sgt. Bergdahl. Captured at 23 he is now 26 and has been promoted from Pfc. to Sgt. His Family is from Hailey, Idaho. His father and mother, Robert and Jani need our support and prayers to see their son, Bowe, returned to them safely. You can help. Winston-Salem Veterans Day Parade

By: Caroline This year’s parade was held on Saturday, November 10th and had a great turnout. Local high school bands and JROTC marching groups provided lively and colorful entertainment and local dignitaries were present. The main focus, however, was on the local veteran’s organizations that came out to honor their own and to show the local population how they are a vibrant part of the community. VFW Post 1134 was well represented with Charlie Clyburn serving as Grand Marshall. The Viet Nam Veterans Association displayed a huge American Flag. American Legion Post 55 Auxiliary members were riding on a bright red Chevy truck, but the ALR riding in the parade was definitely awesome. Forsyth County has certainly become a great Veterans Day Parade venue. Each year it gets better and better.

Smoky Mountain Steel Horses Bike Show

By: dpapabear Saturday, Oct 13, I was riding in the Maggie Valley area doing some leaf color watching and found out that the Smoky Mountain Steel Horses shop in Waynesville, NC was holding a bike show with the proceeds going to the Haywood County Children’s Christmas Program. The weather was perfect for riding and a lot of people were stopping by for the event. They had food, door prizes, 50/50, trophies and music. The “Blackwater Voodoo” band was bringing the tunes during the day, playing a little bit of everything. Smoky Mountain Steel Horses (www.SmokyMountainSteelHorses.com) is trying to have something going on at the shop a couple times each month, so if you are riding in the area, stop by and check them out at 82 Locust Drive in Waynesville, NC. They are also offering pickup service if you are in the area and encounter a problem with your bike. The Maggie Valley/Cherokee area is a favorite riding destination for riders of all makes of machines, so keep them in your mind while in the area. AHDRA Jim McClure Nitro Nationals At Rockingham

Story and photo by Alan Dockery The second weekend of October had Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine reps spread a little thin since there was so much going on. I was with the thousands of fans and hundreds of racers who were at Rockingham Dragway for the All Harley Drag Racing Association’s Jim McClure Nitro Nationals presented by the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association. The weather was beautiful! Clear and cool is great for the drag racers and the campground full of fans. Friday evening bikers were filling the grounds while racers started running impressive numbers during a final test and tune session. That evening the campfires felt good. Qualifying started early Saturday morning and the great weather meant fans were in for an awesome day of drag racing. Besides the action on the strip, you could check out the race machines in the pits and a bunch of vendors. The final round of qualifying had the nitro-fueled machines running as the sun went down. What a sight it was watching the flames thundering from the race bikes as they streaked down the strip at more than 200 miles per hour. After qualifying, it was time to party. Folks were cruising the campgrounds, stopping to warm up when they saw friends or a good fire, sampling good eats and drinks. The band PeacePipe rocked a crowd down by the main gate. Sunday morning the AHDRA ran eliminations for some of the larger sportsman classes. After noon it was time for Opening Ceremonies, which includes Mark and Molly Infield, Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine bosses, presenting a $150 bonus to the SYN3 ET Number One Qualifier. He was eliminated in the semi-final round. Jay Turner, Julian, NC; Brook McCabe, Roanoke Rapids, NC; Armon Furr, Orangeburg, SC; and Tii Tharpe, East Bend, NC, also ran in Top Fuel. Mark Cox, Fleetwood, NC, competed in Rush Pro Fuel making it to the final round. Jay Beasley, Winston-Salem, NC, qualified the Bobby Hoover machine in the Hawaya Racing/ Vreelands H-D Pro Drag class. Keith Browne, Semora, NC, qualified #1 in Rush Pro Gas. Mike Motto, Jacksonville, NC, raced in Rightquick Street Pro. The Hot Street class saw Dickie Johnson, Aynor, SC, in competition. Keith Richner, Moore, SC, qualified second in the 18-bike Bison Racing Super Gas field with Greg Best, Raleigh, NC, also running. The Rush Super Eliminator field had 22 bikes including Gene Jennings, High Point, NC; Lane Boger, Sr., Greensboro, NC; Todd Dillon, Wilmington, NC; Garret Owens, Welcome, NC; Donald Meeler, Goldsboro, NC; Jimmy Winters, Apex, NC, and Chris Wood. Garrett Owens qualified at the top of the 25-bike Screamin’ Eagle Performance class. By: Paul Craven Hurricane Sandy pushed the Save The Ta Tas Run ahead one week to November 4th, but there was a great turn out of bikers from all over the Low Country and surrounding areas anyway. The ride started at Low Country Harley-Davidson in Charleston, SC and ended at the Sand Shack on Ashley Phosphate Road in North Charleston for the after party with stops along the way at Charleston Tea Plantation, Wadmalaw Island, the Firefly Distillery, or Red’s Ice House at Bohicket, Seabrook. Arriving at Low Country, we were surrounding by a sea of pink. I mean everything from shirts, hats, vest, bikes, and even hair and beards. It was amazing to see that bikers from all over were coming to support the run and just down right having a blast doing it. Jennifer Oldal of Low Country Harley said that they had over 150 bikes register with over 200 riders. What a great turn out for an even greater cause. We had a wonderful time at the event and talked to a lot of people who were survivors themselves or related to a survivor of cancer. All of the proceeds from the event will go to Breast Cancer support and prevention by the Breast Cancer Network. Ray Price Race Team Captures The Win At AHDRA Cajun Nitro Nationals

The Ray Price Race Team finished the 2012 AHDRA Championship Series with a win at the Cajun Nitro Nationals In Bell Rose, LA October 27 and 28. After qualifying in the #3 position this weekend, the team put on a great show to finish strong. “Consistency is the key to winning”, says Ray Price, “the numbers we are seeing show that and is paying off.” Saturday, the Akea Express, piloted by Tommy Grimes ran the following qualifying passes. Pass #1 6.679 ET @ 218.23 mph; pass #2 6.646 ET @ 218.51 mph; pass #3 6.650 ET @ 211.39 mph and pass #4 6.564 @ 211.39 mph. The 1,000 horsepower Top Fuel Nitro Harley drag bike takes a round one win with a 6.619 ET @ 213.64 mph vs Seamen’s 7.900 ET @ 181.67 mph. The semi-finals proved to be a tight race, as it usually is when you pair Grimes vs Horne. The team pulled off another win, running an impressive 6.307 ET @ 221.34 mph vs D. Horne 6.382 ET @ 229.04 mph. To wrap up the day in Bell Rose, the Ray Price Race Team runs a strong 6.459 ET @ 211.23 mph in the finals vs J. Turner 8.992 ET @ 108.69 mph. “Although we didn’t capture a championship we are pleased to finish number two in points for the 2012 AHDRA Championship Series”, says Ray Price. By: Linda & Bonnie On October 13th, the sun was shining brightly and it was a perfect day to ride in memory of our friend, Sandi Davis. 33 folks registered for the ride and many more came to honor and remember Sandi. Each rider received a white ribbon to tie on their bikes. White is the symbol of lung cancer. Bonnie and Bobby Stout spoke of Sandi and her love of Harley-Davidsons and her devotion for our H.O.G. Chapter and her friendship with our members. We all were honored that Sandiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband, Randy, was present for the ride. Beautiful turquoise and white balloons were released before the ride. Bobby Stout led the ride to the Iron Gate Winery in Mebane, where they have several wines whose proceeds of sales go to Lung Cancer Research. T-Shirts were sold that were chocolate brown with turquoise and white print. Sandi really loved these colors. Thanks to Down Home Harley-Davidson for providing music and food after the ride. It was great. Over $400 was raised to go to aid in lung cancer research to find a cure, all in the memory of Sandi. Thanks to everyone for their support. If you missed it, you missed a Great ride.

This is a party organized by Chris Hollifield, owner of Carolina Distillery and Dragon’s Den Tattoo Company. Chris has started what I hope becomes a bigger party. RIP Sgt. Thomas Jefferson Butler IV

By: Judy Bortz Sgt. TJ Butler IV returned home from Afghanistan Thursday. It was his first combat deployment with the NC National Guard, and his last. He leaves behind his wife Holly and their 6-month-old son and namesake. Sgt. Butler and two of his fellow soldiers were killed by a suicide bomber that ran into them on a motorcycle loaded with explosives. His military funeral got the attention of Westboro Baptist Church members who planned a protest of the services. Patriot Guard Riders and Rolling Thunder rode escort for his remains from the Wilmington airport to Andrews Mortuary Thursday upon his arrival, and Friday to the First Baptist Church and to the Wilmington National Cemetery for his interment. Over 100 bikers showed up to stand a flag line between any protesters and the funeral procession. No family of a fallen warrior should have to deal with that anytime, especially in their time of mourning. After the family and friends were inside the church, the Patriot Guard Riders got word that members of the protester’s church were at the cemetery, and about 20 of us left to establish a flag line, in order to protect the family from any potential disruptions. Although we did see some members of Westboro Baptist Church, there was no sign of the intended protest. It was a very moving ceremony, and as the 21 gun salute reported loudly into the breeze there was not a dry eye in the area! Not only bikers, but hundreds of people from Wilmington and neighboring towns stood curbside with flags to protect and honor Sgt. Butler’s family. Donations for the widow Butler and son are being accepted from the community. Annual BBQ Cook-Off & Veterans Day Celebration at Ray Price By: Angelica Roman The annual Ray Price BBQ Cook-Off and Veterans Day Celebration, held on Saturday, November 10, was one of the most successful cook-offs to date! BBQ cookers lined the side street, where many had spent the night preparing for the next day. Many of the 12 competitors were new to the Ray Price cook-off scene, but that didn’t deter their hopes for victory. Some were returning teams, looking to once again take home a trophy. It was slightly chilly in the morning, but people began to fill the parking lot, setting up their vendor displays, as the smell of cooking pigs filled the air. The BBQ Brothers riding club stopped by each team’s site, inspecting the pigs and making sure everyone was done on time. By 9am, the event was in full swing. Customers filled the parking lot, shopping at vendor booths and visiting with the non-profit organizations. Rex Blood Services had their blood mobile set up for blood donations. Wild Bill was on site pinstriping various bikes as people looked on in awe. Uncle Sam walked around greeting people, spending time with the veterans, and taking pictures with families. The Firefighters Assisting Armed Forces Families held the “Bikers for America’s Bravest” 343 Ride, raising money to help build a home for a wounded veteran. Several veterans came out to show support for the ride and be a part of the Veterans Day Celebration. The ride, organized by Captain Woody, returned to the dealership for the BBQ Cook-Off. Bikes filled the street on both sides, then down the center, as bikers took advantage of the unusually warm, 70º, fall day. On the stage, Erik Smallwood, along with Neil Ray, entertained the crowd with his unique performance style and blend of different genres. As it neared the noontime serving of the BBQ, a huge line formed at the registration table, as people donated $5 to get an all-you-can-eat wristband, fork, and food tray. The judges took their places at the table and prepared themselves for judging the 12 servings coming their way. The judges included Bob Johanns, a Kansas City Barbeque Society certified BBQ judge; Raleigh HOG director Marc O’Grady; Bob “The Blade” Robinson, a radio personality; and Jerry Hart, owner of Ole Time Barbecue. The crowd moved from one cook site to the next, sampling each team’s hard work and secret sauces and spices. As the teams served the hungry patrons, they shouted out “Vote for 3!” “Vote for 10!” and so on, as the crowd would be voting for, and determining the winner for, the always popular People’s Choice Award. As the BBQ ran out and the votes poured in, Raleigh HOG volunteers tallied up the judges scores and People’s Choice votes. At 2pm, the crowd gathered at the stage, where Kris Weiss, Director of Marketing and Promotions for Ray Price Harley-

Davidson, began announcing the totals for the day. The 343 ride had raised $1,800, which would be used to help build a house for a wounded veteran. The blood drive had 48 units of blood donated. The BBQ Cook-Off, with a $5 donation per person, had raised an all-time high of $3,610, which was donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! Diane Dunn accepted the check on behalf of the organization, thanking everyone for their time and contributions. The crowd drew closer as Kris announced the winners of the cook-off. Third place and a $100 prize went to Tim’s Backyard BBQ, a first-time contestant; second place and $250 went to Dunn and Bullock; first place and the $500 prize went to Redneck Scientific; and the People’s Choice trophy went to Freedom Biker Church Chopper Church, another first-time contestant! The next Ray Price event is our Toys for Tots ride on Saturday, December 1st, and our next cook-off is the Brunswick Stew Cook-Off on March 16th! Story and photo by Alan Dockery A cool little bar that has become a regular stop for bikers in Western North Carolina is Gunter’s In The Grove in Union Grove, NC. To show her appreciation for a good riding season, Manager Angie Welborn held the 1st Annual Bike Fest at Gunter’s on Highway 901. Folks started riding in after noon for a cold drink and something to eat. We tried to get them into some bike games, but everyone was in a lazy, pretty fall day mood, and more into soakin up the sunshine and some brews. A couple dozen racers running pit bikes took to the little motocross-style track behind Gunter’s. During the summer they often race there running four different classes of little bikes. Behind Gunter’s is where you can relax in “Angie Land”. She had a DJ out there, too, so we could dance and sing karaoke. About sundown we got into the “Don’t try this at home” category of fun. Some of the local redneck engineers had built a human slingshot out back. Oh yeah, attach a brave volunteer to the commercial bungee cords strung between two power poles, pull them back and let ‘em fly. I think some folks watching screamed as loud as the slingee. Story compiled by Alan Dockery Photo by Trish Coleman Hundreds of riders stopped by the New Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson on Veterans Day to socialize and honor those who served. The Catawba Valley HOG Chapter made lunch while Damion Maunz handed out flags. Together, they raised more than $400 for the Disabled American Veterans and local homeless vets. Customers also brought in nonperishable goods and clothing to donate. A couple of U.S. Army recruiters were onsite to give us the latest info on how we can sign up our kids, too. The ceremony started at 1pm with the Newton-Conover High School JROTC performing a presentation of the colors. Then Ethel Cunningham sang the national anthem. After the ceremony, about 50 of us gathered for the First Annual Freedom Photo. Local military veterans received free counseling and assistance with their government benefits from the Disabled American Veterans Mobile Service Office. Since 2007, this program, sponsored by The Harley-Davidson Foundation, dubbed Harley’s Heroes, has brought DAV’s Mobile Service Office to hundreds of dealerships across the country, providing important counseling and assistance to help tens of thousands of veterans and their families secure the benefits they earned through service. DAV’s Mobile Service Office, or “office on wheels,” eliminates long trips veterans would have to make from rural communities to city offices. DAV National Service Officers, all disabled veterans themselves, are able to work efficiently from the fully staffed van, helping all veterans with their questions about what benefits they are eligible for – even if they have never filed a claim or had found it difficult working through the red tape. The Harley-Davidson Foundation has pledged a total commitment of $2 million to support DAV’s mobile veteran outreach program since 2007. More than 300 HarleyDavidson dealerships have hosted a Harley’s Heroes event since the program inception. As a retired U.S.A.F. Master Sergeant, I sincerely thank the DAV, Harley-Davidson and Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson for their efforts to help our country’s veterans.

By: Jeanie Hood-Carter A Benefit Ride and Memorial were held on November 3rd in St. Paul, NC for Nancy “Lady Grave Digger” Jackson, who passed away unexpectedly on October 14th. Nancy was known for several things. She LOVED helping others. She would drop everything to help a friend in need or someone who simply asked for help. She LOVED her family and friends and she LOVED her fur babies if as they were her own babies. She had a big heart, a warm smile, and was a good woman. Nancy is survived by 2 sons, John Fulghum and James Skelton, and 1 grandson, Damein Fulghum. She was loved by a host of biker family friends, and special friends James and BJ Cashwell. It takes a very, very special lady to have the qualities she maintained in friendships. Lady Grave Digger will be missed by all whose lives she touched! May she RIP as her memory lives on.

Brothers As POWs In Korea – Brothers Forever

TJ Martin, Dallas Mossman, and Arden Rowley visit WW Smith in the hospital in Americus, Georgia. They had all come to The Ride Home, an event that honors American Ex POW’s during National POW/MIA weekend, the third weekend in September every year. They are survivors of Camp 2 – where the “reactionaries” or incorrigibles were sent because they refused to give in and were considered “a bad influence” on the other POW’s. WW and Miss Charlotte were early arrivals, they love coming to Andersonville, but Friday morning as we were leaving for the ceremonies, WW found it hard to breath and went to the Emergency Room, where he was admitted with pneumonia. As the activities of the weekend progressed, everyone found time to make their way to the hospital to check on the Smiths. Saturday after the Remembrance Ceremony, we took WW’s medal and proclamation with us to give to him later. Upon hearing that we were on our way to the hospital to give him his own ceremony, his brothers asked to come along as well, and Dallas Mossman presented WW with his medal. Very appropriate as you see, WW was having seizures in camp and when Dallas heard of an early release for some of the POW’s in camp, he put WW’s name on the list, a move which all are certain saved his life. My husband Curtis and I have had the honor of being the hosts at the hotel where the Korean POW’s stay during The Ride Home. Friendships have built over the years, some we have seen more than once, some not. Activities begin on Wednesday as we prepare for our guests, then Thursday they start to arrive, always happy to see their brothers and new friends. We sat around the pool area, prepared a light supper for them, but what is most important to these fine people is the opportunity to be together, to share their stories and be in fellowship. On Friday we began the day with a parade through town and then to the National POW/MIA museum in Andersonville and a wreath laying ceremony at the cemetery. Friday

evening was the MIA Ceremony honoring those who are still waiting to come home. A POW table ceremony was performed with 20 place settings and a Son, Daughter or Spouse of the MIA honored stood at the table to represent their loved one. This was followed by the Heroes dinner for all our guests. Saturday we staged again for another parade through town, this time offering rides on our motorcycles to our invited guests. Dallas had told me that he wanted to ride this year, but at 84 years young – I thought he was teasing me. Not to be deterred, that morning he found me and asked where his helmet was, he was ready to ride! A helmet was found in short order and we joined the lineup of bikes. As fate would have it, we were side by side with his good friend Arden Rowley as we rode along the route to the Recognition Ceremony held at Georgia Southwestern State University. The Ride Home was started by chapters of Rolling Thunder to thank our former American POW’s and MIA families from all wars for their sacrifices for our freedom. For many years they were told not to talk about it anymore, to leave it in the past, forget about it, but when you meet these men and women, you will realize, they can’t forget – and many of them kept silent for years, but now are ready to talk. The Ride Home gives them the opportunity to meet with other fellow POW’s who understand, and Rolling Thunder members who are willing to listen, and give them the honor they deserve, which is long overdue.

The Wear Your Pretty PJ’s money was raised through motorcycle rides and other Dec 15 - Clifford Sellers fundraisers. ECU Development Officer Mrs. Pat Frede, a veteran Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer, Memorial Run and Afghanistan veteran, initiated the scholarship fund with an anonymous donation Dec 20 - Employee Christmas Party of the same amount from a former naval officer in 2008. m o c . D H s k n OuterBa By: Wendy Rogers What a wonderful day November 10th was for the Steele Angels! The weather was a biker’s dream come true for their 9th Annual Toy Run. This year the run started at Legend’s Pub, on Bragg Boulevard in Fayetteville, NC and went to the Crow’s Nest, which is, located Parkton, down Highway 59, known as Hope Mills and Chickenfoot Road. If you don’t know about the Steele Angels, they are an all women’s riding club that is a group of women who ride as a group that does charity work for their community and surrounding area and this was the 9th Annual Toy Run for these lady riders. The entry fee is to bring an unwrapped toy for a child or make a donation. When we got to the Crow’s Nest, they had food, music, a few vendors, door prizes, and a 50/50. The winner’s part of the 50/50 was $605. Loudmouth Larry won it and so generously gave back half of it. Thanks Larry! There was some good socializing, too. People saw some people that they have not seen in many years. It is just a wonderful thing when you bring together so many people that have some of the same things in common and really have a great time. I am so glad that the event went well. A huge truckload of toys was collected and around $3000 in donations was also raised, and some more toys are still being brought to the club. There are other clubs and organizations that do these kinds of rides and collect toys for the needy, too. That is great, because there are a lot of children in this area that probably would not even get anything for Christmas if it weren’t for such events. I know the Steele Angels and all the other organizations cannot take care of every child out there, but to know that we are helping some of them makes me feel good. There are a lot of events that go on in this town, from helping at Christmas time, helping sick people, help raise money to pay hospital bills, etc., and various other rides and functions. I know in my heart that bikers have the biggest hearts! It is so nice to know that all organizations can play so good together and make our community a better place! In the end it is always for a great reason. Steele Angels Annual Toy Run is always held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, so mark your calendar for next year and come ride with us. 15th Annual M.D.A. Bike Show

By: Scott Wicker Beautiful Weather greeted 44 entrants on Saturday, October 20th when Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington and the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter held their 15th Annual M.D.A. Bike Show. Twenty categories of entries made for an impressive turn out of bikes. Several interesting items were part of the silent auction and raffle tickets were sold that always contributes to the annual fundraiser as well. Great food was available and spring like weather made for a great turn out and gave us a very enjoyable and fun day. The Show was open to all classes of Harleys, American V-Twins, and Metric Bikes, too! The classes were judged differently this year with the participants entered in the show RowanGunAndPawn@windstream.net marking ballots for their favorite machine in each class. Through the bike show, 50/50 tickets, sales of special event pins, and the silent auction, over $2,200 was raised for M.D.A. Class winners and top finishers are as follows:

Their names are Dana Barnes and his wife 4008 Woodstock Rd. Rocky Mount, NC Aundrea. At the time of the initial reports, they still had their knees but that was in question. Dana’s pelvis was extremely damaged and both were in the ICU. the car he was working on. So, as I remember it, I told him he did a great job putting the ride together and I would see him in the morning. Later that night Ron and I received a phone call that Rodney was killed in a motorcycle accident leaving what would have been the last stop on the run. The word devastated is not strong enough to describe my feelings that night. On October 21st, we did the memorial run in his honor. Rodney worked so hard on the event we were told his cousin Rocky and family wanted us to go through with it, so we did. They felt that is what Rodney would have wanted. Around 80 bikes met at Bowling’s on Roxboro Road in Durham, NC. As it turned out, it was more of a ride to reflect. All

Donnie Watson By: Kathy Johnson For those of you that don’t know, Donnie Watson was murdered in July. His life was taken away from his family and friends that carry the pain every day. The murderer is still breathing, in other words, breathing the air that was taken away from Donnie. In my mind the killer took 2 lives that day and I will explain that to you as we go further along. When Donnie was killed, his family, friends, and the American Legion Post 7 organized a fundraiser. The fundraiser was to raise reward money to put out to catch his killer. We did raise the $10,000 that was needed to meet our goal. Through the joint effort we had the opportunity to meet some of his family and other friends we didn’t know. It made us all closer and helped a lot of us feel like we were doing something to help, as Donnie would have done himself. Donnie had a lot of passions - family, friends, and anything with an engine. Even though the reward money had been raised, his nephew, Rodney Watson, wanted to do a memorial run to help maintain awareness about what happened to Donnie, and keep Donnie’s name on a race car that Donnie had sponsored. Rodney was much like his uncle - very fun loving. He was also the same as Donnie in that he would want to help someone if they needed help. On October 20th, I was on the way to the state fair and I talked to Rodney on the phone. Rodney was exited about the memorial run the next day he was going to run the route that night. He just needed to finish up detailing

I will always think of them and miss them and I am sure it goes for every one that knew them. They were unforgettable! I think every one with that hurt in their heart and pulling in their chest realizes it won’t go away. Maybe you understand now why I said the murderer killed 2 people. You see, if Donnie was not murdered, Rodney would probably still be alive. In fact, Donnie and Rodney would have been at Martinsville watching the NASCAR race together that weekend. Well to the person that killed Donnie, if you are reading this, I feel you are a waste of flesh and you are due punishment swiftly. To anyone that has a tip or information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Donald K. Watson at 4424 Regis Avenue In Durham in the early morning hours of July 9th, contact Investigator Sole of the Durham Police Department at 919-2570985. There is $14,000 reward being offered by the American Legion Post 7 in Durham. I would like to also thank Durham Harley-Davidson. You know why.

That Christ is real in your life and you join with CHRISTians all over the world rejoicing together and thanking God for sending His only begotten son, Jesus, into this world for us! Sadly, we still see the effort by some to remove Jesus from public display and even change or remove the Christmas celebration. Well, if Jesus is real in your heart as your Lord and Savior, then no matter how strong their effort may be, you and your family will still have a very Merry CHRISTmas! As hard

They rocked it from 2:00 PM until 9:00 PM. With over $3,500 raised with raffle prizes nearly everyone got the opportunity to win something. The auction prizes were amazing as well and with the skilled help of our auctioneer, John Pruitt, we raised even more money. Most of the money from the dice roll was donated back and all of the 50/50 money was donated back. One of the crowd favorites was the puppy kissing booth with two adorable puppies named Raven and Militia provided by their parents Diavelo Fletcher and Kristi Sylvan. They were sporting their Harley bandanas and provided even more money for the cause. All in all it was a very enjoyable and profitable day. We raised $7,550 and Happy Jack Animal Food Supplier gave an additional $5,000 and if that wasn’t enough a land donation is also in the works to go toward Dottie’s vision of building a small facility to house these animals in emergency situations. Poppa would like to send out a personal “thanks” to all of the riders who provided blocking for this ride. With this many bikes we would not have pulled this off without their help. We would also like to thank Joy Blankenship for her hard work as my right hand for holding down the fort while we were riding. Poppa and I would like to thank all of the local businesses for their support and donation of prizes. We would also like thank all that attended to make this such a success. It delivered cool riding temperatures giving the bikers even more inspiration to load up for a great cause and raise some money for the 1st Annual Cause For The Paws Benefit Bike Ride And Dice Run. Nearly 60 bikes lined up to support the OC-PAWS (Onsiow County Partners For Animal Welfare). OC-PAWS is an organization founded by Dottie Harding that consists of highly motivated animal advocates that support our local rescue groups in Onslow County. They offer low cost spay and neutering clinics, education, public awareness, fund raising, and a commitment to help the county shelter provide the best possible care for animals needing homes. OC-PAWS is funded entirely by donation and fundraisers. The Cause for the Paws began as the dream of Donna & Larry “Poppa” Plowman. There was not a more excited person at the benefit than Dottie when the kickstands went up and all of these bikes roared down the highway. All of the hopes of putting such a benefit together rested on finding just the right charity to support. This began with a dog named Elvis. Elvis needed money to throw his bail at a local shelter after being picked up by the dogcatcher. As the DJ at Lo Re Lie Pub & Grill in Sneads Ferry, NC, I called out to the customers for help. In less than one hour the customers raised all of the money needed to free Elvis. All money was turned over to OC-PAWS and that’s when I found the charity I had been looking for. This event is the first of its kind for Onsiow County and is scheduled to be an annual event. A great ride was in store for all of the bikers. It started at Lo Re Lie Pub & Grill where the benefit was based. The ride then proceeded to go through Holly Ridge on to The Wild Hawg Saloon in Hampstead where we were all greeted with open arms and support. Then it was on to Dale’s Pub in Holly Ridge where we were treated to free hot dogs and Lisa, the bartender, had even made us dog shaped cookies. Our next stop was the Brass Pelican on Topsail Island where we were treated to delicious hot country

Johnny Ray Vanhoy Sr. Benefit Ride

By: Charles Holcombe It’s Saturday morning, November 3rd and it’s about 31º outside. I, like many others riding this morning, am out cleaning the frost off my bikes windshield. I have some heated gear that I have never tried before and today seems like the perfect time to get familiar with it! I’m shocked that my fiancé is riding with me in this weather, but she knows it’s for a good cause. Let me explain why freezing my butt off and I’m about to ride out at eight in the morning. A little over a month ago, a young lady named Avery Vanhoy contacted me through Facebook and said she was referred to me by a mutual friend about putting together a benefit ride for her dad, Johnny Ray. After speaking with her, it seemed that she had everything in order and would only need someone to lead the ride. Seeing that she had never done anything like this, I was quite impressed with the thought and planning that she had already done. I agreed to lead the ride, which meant I would handle the route, police involvement, and inviting everyone I know in the area. Now the planning is done and we are at the AmVets Post 910 in Albemarle, NC early this morning with only two bikes arriving before us. I was really worried that the weather would deter a lot of folks from the ride, but they slowly kept showing up. I heard a familiar rumble through the woods coming our way and knew it would be some folks I have ridden with before, and I was right. The Charlotte Vulcan Riders are now in sight with a large and welcome group including some members of Rolling Thunder 2 from Troutman, NC. Some of the Vulcan Riders are staying behind to help with the cooking and other chores that go with an event. Speaking of the event, Avery has put together a rather large benefit for her dad who has been diagnosed with Non Small Cell Carcinoma. The funds raised here today will go towards the expenses Johnny Ray has and will incur during his battle with this health condition. Johnny Ray knows about battles. He is a war veteran from the Viet Nam era. I haven’t seen him yet, but he will be around most of the day today. Well, it’s 10 am and time to get this ride started. While we will not be escorted by law enforcement, six different jurisdictions have assured us that they will handle all intersections along the way so that our journey goes smoothly, and it did. We only had one stop to make in Mint Hill, NC at a watering hole named Stooges Pub. The bar owner agreed to open early to accommodate our group which was most appreciated. We hung out for about an hour playing corn hole, enjoying some refreshments and snacks, and just talking shop with other fellow bikers. When it was time to saddle up I was thrilled to find out that an off duty LEO was heading our way and said

that we could just ride behind in his car, just in case there was heavy traffic and busy intersections. Not that he was escorting us or anything like that, we were just being safe. Sometimes ya meet nice guys like that on the road. The ride was going a little ahead of schedule, which meant we could eat earlier, cause I’m getting really hungry! The ride went like clockwork, and when we got back to the AmVets Post 910, everyone was starving. There was BBQ and chicken with all the fixins and desert. Avery put together two bands for the event. King Friday played while we were gone, which entertained the staff and other guests attending the event, and Right Turn Clyde who was preparing to play after we got there. I’m not sure what the head-count was but it had to be around two hundred or more. Some had entered the corn hole tournament, which I completely missed! How did that happen? There was a prize to the bikers drawn, a 50/50 drawing prize of $469 and some of the best raffle prizes I’ve seen in a long time! Did I mention an appearance by NASCAR Truck Series driver of #89, Chris Lafferty and IHRA World Champion drag car racer John Furr? My thanks go out to all the volunteers, many I did not know or even see. Also the sponsors and their donations to the event are way too many to fit in here, but if you go to Avery’s Facebook page, you’ll probably see them mentioned there. You could see and feel the love for Johnny Ray from his family and friends. When asked by our friend, Lindsey Lee what Johnny Ray most wanted to say about the fundraiser, he replied, “I am very appreciative and nice to know that people care. Taking care of our country starts here at home and the CBA and community people here are awesome. Bikers do a lot of good. If you treat people good, it will come back to you, and I must have done something good in my life.” You just can’t argue with that! The day turned out to be mild and sunny. Most people stayed

till the end, and a few of us stayed a bit longer and enjoyed the hospitality of the folks at the AmVets post. After the tally was done, I heard there was over $6000 raised for Johnny Ray! Wow! Now that’s how it’s done. My hat’s off to Avery Vanhoy for a job well done. The 1st Annual Seth Nall Scholarship Fund Ride By: Mark Infield The 1st Annual Seth Nall Scholarship Fund Ride and Poker Run was held October 27th at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Trinity, NC. Seth Alexander Nall was a 21-year-old innocent bystander who was shot in Randolph County on July 21, 2012. Friends and family turned out on this fall morning when Hurricane Sandy and the cloudy sky could have meant stay home for a lot of people. However, the sun broke through and there was not a drop of rain all day. There were biscuits, donuts, coffee, and cold drinks at registration before the ride and about 60 people showed up. The Enforcers MC Blue Ridge Chapter (5665) was there to support their brother, Tim Nall, Seth’s father. The ride headed out with 40+ motorcycles, 2 vans and several cars. We made stops at World Class Powersports in High Point and Tilley Harley-Davidson in Salisbury before returning to Mt. Vernon UMC’s Hut for refreshments. After everyone ate the awards were given out. Tabby Howell won $100 for best hand with 4 Kings. Marsha Barley bought an extra card and drew a Queen high straight for the 2nd best hand and $50. I had the worst hand until I drew a King and handed the $25 prize to Kristi Sheffield. Steve Nicks won the 50/50 and donated his $125 prize back to the scholarship fund. In a second drawing, Marsha Barley also won a ride for 2 on the Kersey Valley Zip Line. We would like to thank Casey Hilliard for setting up the Seth Nall Scholarship Fund and all who volunteered to make this event happen. Everyone who came out to ride in remembrance of Seth deserves our thanks. Fat Boy did a good job leading the ride both down the highway and out through the country and the blockers did a good job helping keep the group together. At the end of the day, Tim pulled a small veil with some of Seth’s ashes in it from his jacket pocket and showed it to me. He said, “Seth rode with us today.” It was a special day and a special ride.

By: John Sink, Elder, Southern Piedmont Chapter, Bikers For Christ October 21st was a beautiful Sunday morning at Easy Eddie’s in Huntersville, NC. People arrived ready to start the day off right with a Sunday morning church service put on by Bikers For Christ along with the Seventh Vessel Band out of Marshville, NC. The really cool part was seeing Lil Wolf give the dedication and baptism for Katiebug. Lots of people showed up throughout the day to hang out and eat BBQ. In fact, so many people showed up, we ran out of BBQ! But everyone understood it was all for a good cause and we had a great time. At 2 pm, the Hudson And Fitch band kicked it up with some more good music. There were door prizes, a 50/50, bake sale, and lots of cool stuff was auctioned off throughout the day. Bikers for Christ also had a Bike Blessing tent set up. In the end, this benefit raised about $4,000, enough money to help this young lady. All of the proceeds will go directly towards a wheel chair ramp for Katiebug’s van and there is more than enough to make that happen. We want to thank everyone who showed up. American Children’s Home Ride - 2012

By: Caroline This is a very important ride for the American Legion Riders at Post 55 and one I never get tired of attending. Not only is it heartwarming to see these kids each year and how much they appreciate us, but it is also, sadly, one of the most needed. Unlike most rides this time of year, when toys are the norm, these folks request items such as school supplies, toiletries, and bedding that are needed on a daily basis to take care of the kids who live at the facility. This year we were able to bring $25

gift cards to all the children, a truckload of tangible items, but also a check for over $700. Since the ride fell on Veterans Day this year, the kids put on a special program with a special tribute to the veterans. I am amazed each year, to see a unique and original program of poetry and song that the kids write and perform. It is always poignant and heartfelt—they are truly talented young folks. It was appropriate that ALR past Director, Ken Lewis, was recognized for starting the ride several years ago. Ken was unable to attend last year because he was in Iraq, but he was there this year to present the gifts to the home. He also accepted a plaque that the kids had made on behalf of the ALR. This year there were folks who came out to help from the Guardians Of The Children organization as well as other individuals who wanted to help. The ALR welcomes everyone on these rides and hope that more riders will join us next year. 8th Annual High Country Toy Run

By: Michael Frederick It was a great autumn day to take a ride from Marion to Boone for a toy run. It was about 45Âş when we got started. We all enjoyed the beautiful autumn day and seeing all the colors on the mountain even though our toes and fingers were frozen. We got to the Boone Mall parking about 10:30 and the event started 11:00. The parking lot had boxes supplied by United States Marine Corps Toys For Tots for the riders to drop the toys in. Over 130 bikes show up for the event and we all left the Boone Mall escorted by local law enforcement. They escorted the riders from the Boone Mall, through Blowing Rock, down a winding road past the Blue Ridge Parkway, onto 221, and back to the Boone Mall. The $20 donation or toys got you a shirt and food. The food, BBQ chicken and BBQ pork, with slaw, baked beans, and

lemonade or tea, was provided by Bandanaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Restaurant in Boone. There was a silent action and some of the items were two chainsaw carvings of bears. There were willow wood sets, patio sets, birdhouses, dinner tickets, autographed football helmets, and more. Representative Virginia Foxx showed up with her own door prize; a personal behind the scene escorted tour of the United States Capital. I wish that I could mention all the sponsors, but there were over 200 sponsors. We all would like to say a special thank to all the sponsors, attendees, local police, and the volunteers. Just think of all the children that will have a Christmas and gifts under the tree because of all of you. Happy Holidays from all of us.

Saturday, October 13th could not have been a better day and folks took advantage of the great weather to come hang out and help celebrate. The festivities began at lunchtime with hot dogs, hamburgers, and drink specials. Apparently, when those goodies run out, folks continued to order delicious food off the menu. Either way, customers came out winners. Also, for those of us who chose to bask in the sun outside, the popular local group Risky Bizness entertained from the patio. By: Judy Bortz Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson had their Open House on Saturday, November 3rd. I love these events and try to test ride as many new Harley-Davidson motorcycles as I can. This year they had a great selection of 2013 models to choose from. I rode the Switchback, Fat Boy Low, and the FLS 103. They were all were great rides, but if I was buying, the new Fat Boy rocked it for me. I love the new paint jobs as well. I got a picture of a Fat Boy Low with a very cool limited edition scull and chain design they have in house and I LOVE IT! The new paint combinations are beautiful! Check out it and all the pics from the day at FullThrottleMagazine.com. The dealership had free pizza, pulled pork in a vinegar sauce, hotdogs, slaw, banana pudding, and cupcakes. It was a delicious spread, and nobody left hungry. There was so much food people were taking plates home. There were raffles and drawings throughout the day. A bike show brought in some really nice bikes and there are pictures of the winners with their trophies online. The staff at Carolina Coast always goes out of their way to help you. Fought Like A Girl And WON!

By: Paul Craven It was a beautiful day in the Low Country for a ride of any kind, but especially for this one. Like any benefit or charity ride, we were all looking forward to a great time on the bikes and all for a great cause, too. Low Country Harley-Davidson was hosting a benefit ride for the Breast Cancer Network. As I was walking around taking pictures of bikes and talking to people, a young lady’s shirt caught my eye and I just had to ask her THE question; “Are you a Survivor?” Of course the answer was “Yes”, but her story is what really got to me. Jen Trunnell was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2010. As you might expect, it came as a shock. Surgery was scheduled in December, which I can only imagine was very tough coming in the Holiday season. Chemotherapy started in January and ran through March of 2011 followed by Radiation in April. As I talked with Jen and her husband, Charlie, I could see the determination and strong will that this young lady has and she put very sternly, “On June 10th 2012, I was DONE.” Her fight was officially over. She WON! As we talked you could see the sparkle in Charlie’s eye. It had been a long, trying battle for him as well. Jen said that in April she got her motorcycle license to cel-

ebrate the battle being won. Her motto now is “Once she knew she could run, now she knows she can fly”. Congratulations Jen and Charlie and God Bless.
