Snow, we got 8”!, 70º weather the next week, the inauguration of our 45th President, the Easyrider Bike Show was the biggest and best in quite some time, and the stock market makes history breaking 20,000. Things are looking good so far and I can see spring just around the corner. Hidey Ho, children! February is a month loaded with exciting events, too. We start off the month with NC CBA/ABATE Lobby Day in Raleigh on the 1st. It is a day to represent motorcyclists’ issues with your representatives. See info in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. Super Bowl LI is on 2-5 and the commercials are always great. The game and half time show, maybe not so much, but it is an opportunity to get together with friends and have a good time. Don’t forget the “Puppy Bowl”, either. On the 11th The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine will attempt the 19th Almost A Tradition – Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party & Oyster Roast at Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken located at 4695 S. Main Street in Winston-Salem, NC. The party runs from 12 to 6 with free oysters sponsored by Karney Law and Smokin’ H-D, music by Honkytonk Outlaws, contests, a diamond heart pendant provided by Hayes “The King of Diamonds” Jewelers raffle (Valentine’s Day) and a 55” 4K flat screen TV raffle to watch the Daytona 500 on plus giveaways, event T-Shirts, and more. Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken will be serving up wings and beer all day. Sometimes the weather is bad, but I guarantee that the party is ALWAYS GREAT! Please come and have a fun day with us, but leave the kiddies at home. No one under 21. NO EXCEPTIONS! It isn’t that we don’t love kids, we do, but this is an ADULT PARTY. Valentine’s Day follows on the following Tuesday, so if you didn’t win the diamond heart pendant or you just forgot, you can do something special for that special someone. 28th Annual Windjammers Toy Run

By Wally Wersching On Saturday, December 17th, the Windjammers Motorcycle Club held their 28th Annual Toy Run for the Cleveland County Children’s Homes. There was a real air of anticipation. Everyone in the area looks forward to the Windjammers Toy Run. It’s a time to meet old friends, and to make new ones, too. I anxiously watched the weather for the week before the run. The temps on Saturday were starting out in the mid 20’s – COLD. There was even a slight misty drizzle coming down. Luckily it didn’t freeze when it hit the pavement. In Charlotte, there were hundreds of accidents due to icy roads. To the west in Rutherford County, it was raining. We didn’t realize it at the time, but we were extremely blessed. God was watching over the Toy Run this year. The Windjammer’s toy run experience consists of breakfast at the clubhouse starting at 7:30AM with lots of coffee, donuts, homemade sausage, and liver mush biscuits. The “Gathering Place” is the Cleveland Mall in Shelby. The run goes to one of the Cleveland County Children’s Homes – Aaron’s House west of Shelby. Afterwards, it’s back to the clubhouse for free BBQ and fixin’s. Each year’s toy run starts with the cooking of the BBQ.

This year “Hangman” stayed up all night to cook the delicious pork. I stopped by the clubhouse at about 10:30AM. There was a small group of Windjammers preparing for the day’s events. After one dressed in a Santa Suit, he was ready to head to the Mall. His daughter wanted to ride behind him

but didn’t have any cold weather gear. She foraged through his pick-up truck, and came up with his bibbed insulated overalls that he wears for work, and his work jacket. She looked a little comical because she was a slightly built young lady flopping around in the large clothes. She didn’t care because she was going to ride with her dad in the Toy Run. About 11:30AM, the bikes, and military trucks start congregating at the Cleveland Mall. As it got closer to 1:00 PM, the large parking lot slowly filled with bikers. It’s always a lot of fun. Many old friends were there shaking hands, and hugging each other in friendly greetings. I saw some old friends that I only see during Toy Runs. There were many clubs, and Biker Ministries represented at the run. Everyone brought toys strapped to their bikes. Some were in costume, and others had their bikes decorated in the Christmas spirit. I met the photographer from one of the local papers. He was taking pictures, and writing down names for his publication. It’s good to see that the papers will inform people about the run. It has come a long way since the first run in 1989 when no local paper mentioned anything about the run. At exactly 1:00PM, the command to fire-‘em-up went out, and the parade started heading toward the Court Square in Shelby with a police escort. Once it starts, there are motorcycles as far as the eye can see, and the roar is almost deafening as they pass. I left a few minutes before the run pulled out of the mall to get to the home before they do so I could take pictures as they ride in. When I arrived at the home, I talked with Miss Margie, the director of the Children’s Homes, and gave her a DVD with pictures of all 27 previous toy runs. She uses the DVD’s to share the experience with other people on Facebook. When the police escort sirens sounded, and the bikes arrived, it was a very festive event. Some of the people who brought a gift into the home had tears in their eyes as they left. Everybody had a smile on their face especially when Miss Margie

thanked them as they walked in. It’s always a pleasure to be part of any toy run, especially the Windjammers Toy Run, because we get to meet some of the children. This year every biker got a “Thank You” poem, and a candy-cane from the children. They seem to really appreciate what we do. That’s why I haven’t missed one since the first one on December 17, 1989. I plan on going to all the future ones, too. After the toys were dropped off, some of the bikers quickly left to get an early start on the BBQ at the club house but most continued to mingle on the front lawn as though they didn’t want it to end. Preparation for next year’s toy run starts the day after this year’s run. The club members work all year so that the next toy run will be the best ever. It’s all worth it to know that there will be toys for the children on Christmas Day. Ever since 1992, the Windjammers Toy Runs have given over $500,000 to the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County, which has been used to give the children a more normal life. This year’s run was a relatively good one, considering the weather, with an estimated 200 bikes. There have been years when the weather was warm and sunny with almost 1,000 bikes. The weather has the most influence on how many bikes are at the toy run. We all pray for good weather each year. I’ll be back again next year no matter what the weather. Mark your calendar for the last weekend before Christmas!

Tilley H-D Birthday Party By: Vickie Kress Photo by Kris Kerley Saturday, January 14th was a really good day at Tilley Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC. Don and Robinette Tilley both have January birthdays and we had a celebration in memory and honor of their special days. Robinette was here and greeted a lot of customers and friends with her family. We served chili and birthday cake to everyone who stopped by for the event. The chili was prepared by Bucky Oates and Tim McClure and was very delicious on such a cool day. Tea was donated by McDonald’s in Statesville. Kyle Petty and his lovely wife, Morgan, who came to sign autographs and see Robinette, were our special quests. Lots of race fans stopped by to see him. He surprised everyone by playing his guitar and singing a song. Many of his supporters from the Kyle Petty Charity Ride came by, too. From the beginning, Don Tilley led the Kyle Petty Charity Ride to help build and fund the Victory Junction Gang Camp. For 20 years, it was one of his favorite charities, which is so wonderful for kids with diseases of all kinds to enjoy with no cost to the parents.

Victory No More By Wally Wersching Polaris Industries Inc. is a global powersports leader. Polaris feeds the appetite of riders, workers, and outdoor enthusiasts with its RANGER®, RZR® and Polaris GENERAL™ sideby-side off-road vehicles; its SPORTSMAN® and Polaris ACE® all-terrain off-road vehicles; Victory® and Indian Motorcycle® motorcycles; Slingshot® moto-roadsters; and Polaris RMK®, INDY®, Switchback® and RUSH® snowmobiles. Despite raves from critics, top-notch scores in satisfaction surveys, a small but dedicated fan base, and despite making an American V-Twin cruiser that was in many ways far superior to its more-lauded competition, the Minnesota based company announced on January 9th plans to end Spirit Lake, Iowa production of the Victory motorcycle immediately. The 18-year-old subsidiary’s sales peaked in 2012, and had been declining ever since. It’s no coincidence that 2012 was the last year the Kingpin was offered. The whole motorcycle market, along with the economy, has been in a decline. The problem is the high quality of the motorcycles produced. Longevity is the child of high quality and the curse retail sales. The motorcycles don’t wear out very quickly, and bikers keep their bikes longer and are hesitant to buy new ones. First time bikers buy reasonably priced, high quality, used bikes instead of the higher priced new ones. “Our focus is on profitable growth,” Polaris Industries Chairman and CEO Scott Wine said in a statement. Citing sagging sales, Wine said, “The incredibly difficult decision to pull the plug on Victory was made so that Polaris’ motorcycle division

could focus all its energy and investments on the resurgent Indian and upstart Slingshot brands.” Wine stated, “This decision will improve the profitability of Polaris and our global motorcycle business, and will materially improve our competitive stance in the industry.” Wine also says Polaris remains committed to maintaining its presence in Spirit Lake with the Indian motorcycle production. Polaris hasn’t said how many workers might be impacted by the shutdown of the Victory line. The Victory brand represented only 3% of Polaris’ $4.7 billion in sales last year, or about $141 million. Three of the past five years have been unprofitable for Victory. Polaris plans to assist dealers in liquidating their existing Victory inventory, and over the next ten years, supply parts, service, and warranty coverage to Victory dealers and owners. It didn’t help that Polaris closed on its $665 million acquisition of Transamerican Auto Parts (TAP) last November - a deal which sapped financial resources over the near term. It’s been a rough 18 years for Victory. Since its debut in 1998, it battled toe-to-toe with Harley-Davidson, and after a somewhat unpromising start, the company finally hit its stride by the mid-2000s under the guidance of motocross legend Mark Blackwell. Two developments were important to Victory’s achievement: bringing in the legendary Arlen Ness as a style consultant; and the introduction of the Freedom V-Twin engine. Victory began to make a name for itself through quality, craftsmanship, and service. J.D. Power gave the company a five-star rating in 2006. In 2008 the company released its Cross Country and Cross Roads models, simultaneously bumping the Freedom’s displacement from 100 to 106 cubic inches, and increasing its transmissions from five-speeds to a six-speed with overdrive. The faired Cross Country was Victory’s most successful. Harley-Davidson was forced to improve their bikes to keep up with the Victory. If it were not for the Victory Freedom 106 engines, there would be no revolutionary Harley “Milwaukee Eight” engines. Victorys were also instrumental in the rise of the “Bagger” – a custom model with saddlebags. Those are the facts and the reasons that I found on the internet as to why they stopped making Victory Motorcycles. It was a corporate decision to improve “Profitable Growth” – not that the bike was bad or anything like that. It wasn’t selling to the corporate expectations. It didn’t make enough profit. The corporate “bean counters” (accountants) played with the

numbers, and showed the ruling powers that Victory motorcycles shouldn’t be made anymore. The “bean counters” can manipulate the numbers to show anything they want. They are the reason why many companies moved their manufacturing overseas. I’ve been a Victory owner for the last five years. They had a slogan “Ride One And You’ll Own One”. It was true. After I took one for a test ride, I sold my Harley, and bought my 2009 Kingpin. It is the best riding bike I have ever owned. It has over 50,000 miles on it, and the only thing that I had to do in the past five years was to perform regular maintenance like oil, filter, plugs, tires, and brakes. It is also the most beautiful bike I have ever owned. It stands out as like a jewel in the crowd of Harleys. I have read that the Victory motorcycles in dealer’s stock will be drastically discounted to help move them. Perhaps now is the time to buy one. The cost may be down but the quality

is still there. In my humble opinion, It’s the best bike for the money (and always was). The Victory motorcycle will become a collectible classic like the Pontiac, DeSoto, Plymouth, and Oldsmobile. I feel that Polaris betrayed me, and all the other Victory owners, dealers, and aftermarket parts suppliers. When I bought my Victory, I believed in Victory and Polaris. I told my friends, and anybody who would listen to buy a Victory because I knew they were great. When someone buys a bike, they also buy into the brand’s image. They join clubs, and customize the bike to make it special. I’m proud to be a Victory owner, and plan to be for the rest of my life. Could Polaris have saved Victory? Possibly, but it would have been difficult and costly. With only 3% of Polaris Industries, the bean counters thought it wouldn’t have been worth the effort to the bottom line. Polaris is just too big, and Victory was too small.

By: Johnny Reb Dec 16th, another day that will live in infamy! The Pit Stop Bar and Billiards in Kinston, NC, was the scene of the 1st Annual Ugly Sweater Contest. The place was packed with people hoping to earn the title of having the ugliest sweater on earth! It was also a going away party for Tomeka and Brandon Pitts. It was sad to think of our dear friends leaving, but I am sure they will have a great adventure ahead of them in Colorado. Brandon is in the Army and this should be his last duty assignment before retiring. Hopefully they will come back and settle in eastern North Carolina. We would love to have them back here with us. Back to the party, the DJ had the place rocking and the karaoke machine was getting lots of use, some would say too much! No, it was a blast and we have some good voices at the Pit Stop! Bubba was wearing the ugliest and weirdest sweater you have ever seen, with lights and strategically placed candy canes. Bubba took the Grand Prize of $100 cash, and the title of ugliest sweater. I think his “stage” presence may have had something to do with it too. Joy made sure things ran smoothly, with plenty of food and a great atmosphere for this really fun time. There will be many more fun events coming up at this biker friendly bar. Joy has some great ideas for the Pit Stop to bring in our biker brothers and sisters. There will be everything from poker runs to possibly an outside pavilion with live music! Joy rides and she loves us old dirty bikers! The Pit Stop will always be a place for bikers to pull in and have a cold one with a real laid back attitude. Johnny Reb out.

Only We Change Bros & Bro-ettes, Have you ever taken a ride on some streets you haven’t been on in a long time? I went on some streets today and boy how things have changed! There was a lot of new stuff and a lot of vacant places that were previously occupied. I had an uncle pass away before Christmas and he was 100 years old. Just stop and think about all the changes that came about in his life time. I never really thought about this until now. We tend to get so busy and just don’t think about some things. So much has changed just since I was born. Just look how cars have changed in the last 50 years. TV’s were brand new and cell phones didn’t even exist. I guess it is natural to wonder what is next. I remember when Tank got saved. He said when he walked outside everything smelled different and looked different and even sounded different. These are some of the things that we just take for granted. Just stop and think about how things must have been back when Jesus was born and the world that He grew up in. Would He be pleased with things the way they are now? I’m sure he wouldn’t. Even the ones that are saved aren’t perfect and make mistakes every day. No matter how good we are, we all have problems and will never be perfect. But you know one thing that has never changed and never will is the Word of God.

A lot of people, even preachers try to turn the Word of God around to benefit and suit themselves, but it doesn’t work that way. Like it or not, the Word of God has never changed and never will. We all need to get real and take the Word of God more seriously. John 3:16,17 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world, through Him, might be saved.” We can’t stop the world from changing, but we can stand on God’s Word and His promise and the changes will mean a lot more to us. Janette Thornley Takes NHRA Pro Fuel Championship Again

By: Alan Dockery Photo by Matt Polito She did it again! Janette Thornley of Statesville, NC, defended her 2015 title by taking the National Hot Rod Association Pro Fuel Harley Championship for 2016. Last year was her fifth season riding a sevensecond, 180-mile-per-hour Pro Fuel Harley Drag Bike. Pro Fuel bikes are cool machines. This is the small class of nitromethane-fueled drag race bikes with 121 cubic inch engines, single-speed no transmission, and gravity fed carburetor. I have always been impressed by folks who can make these bikes run right. Janette got her first taste of drag racing about ten years ago when she bought a Sportster with wheelie bars and air-shifter and tried drag racing a few times that summer. Years later, she hung out with Ray Price and knew she wanted to race again. Once she sat on a Johnny Vickers Pro Fuel Harley, Janette signed up for his class on how to ride and race nitro.

Charleston H.O.G. Membership Drive & Oyster Roast By: Brian Dixon January 14th, 2017 was a beautiful, warm, sunny day in Charleston, SC when Lowcountry Harley-Davidson held their Charleston H.O.G. Membership Drive & Oyster Roast. Oyster roasts are most commonly held in the winter months, as the steam and piping hot shells and the salty morsels they contain, serve to warm party goers as much as to feed them. But when you schedule an event in the SC Lowcountry, you can never be certain what temps you will get, even in the middle of winter! However, unseasonal warmth didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop the numerous guests from gathering around the long row of tables to devour all the delicious steamed local oysters that were being continuously served. Besides, who is going to complain about such

a perfect riding day? For those not mollusk inclined, there were grilled hot dogs and thanks to their January Souper Saturdays, you could also help yourself to a bowl of chili. Entertainment was also provided as DJ Scot cranked out classic rock tunes all day. The overall turnout was excellent with many people coming and going throughout the event. As the event name would suggest, all of this great food and friendly people had another purpose, to sign up members, both new and returning, for the Charleston H.O.G. Chapter #4774. To become a member of the local chapter one must have a valid, current National H.O.G. membership and ID number. I was told if you

buy a new bike, you get one year of the National membership free. The cost of yearly membership to the Charleston Chapter is only $20 paid at time of application, but you can sign up for multiple years. Above the apparel section of the dealership, is the large meeting hall which was integrated into the design of the building to support the local biker community when Phil “Grumpy” Schoonover moved his dealership to its current location in 2007. On the walls are several flags, each covered in signatures. These flags were signed by attending members on various rides. Plaques on the wall display names of the Director’s Award winners for dedication to the Chapter, and monthly/ yearly high mileage award winners. The monthly winner gets a gas card and the yearly winner gets 100 dollars. Last year’s high mileage award went to Mike Drentlaw with 39,900 miles! Camaraderie and varied types of rides aren’t the only reason to join. As bikers are known for, the Charleston H.O.G. Chapter is

big on community involvement, most often in the form of charity rides. Every member I met was friendly and welcoming. They even made sure to tell me that member guests can participate in rides by simply signing a release form. Also, several other local riding groups, such as the Green Knights, Christian Motorcycle Association, Lawriders, and Fire & Iron utilize Lowcountry Harley-Davidson as a rallying point for many of their rides. Chapter Director Dave Snyder informed me that approximately 90 members signed up today and that throughout the year new bike sales and steady member accrual usually results in a total of about 150 members. A Tribute To George Rider 3/19/42 – 1/13/17

By: Rose George Rider passed away after an extended illness at his home in Trinity, NC on Friday, January 13, 2017. George enjoyed working part-time at the Greensboro Coliseum, riding his motorcycle, having benefits for various organizations, charities, and enjoying life to the fullest. He owned several bars, nightclubs, and a restaurant in the area. In 1985 he opened on Hwy 29 At North Gate Inn, “G. Rider’s Night Life.” In 1987 he opened “G. Riders In The Night” at South Gate Inn. In 1988 he opened his pride and joy, Riders in the Country at 5701 Randleman Road in Randleman, NC with his wife Sharon. For 29 years, George was a nightly fixture at Rider’s In The Country. Once I ask him his secret for success. His was reply was, “Hard work, good customers, friends, and a great staff.” Rider’s In The Country had been the host to many big-time names such as Clarence Carter, Tracy Lawrence, Doc Holiday, Robin Lee, Barrett of Mississippi, Kentucky Head Hunters, and Little Texas. George has also been host to some of the best bands in the area. The band Fair Warning was a given on any holiday or special event, and enjoyed a close friendship with George for over 20 years. Some other bands included Southbound, Dirty Bible, and Southern Charm. George was well known in the music community. If he scheduled you more than once you were sure to become a success. George was a Shriner, Mason, and member of Guilford Lodge 656 A.F. & A.M. He belonged to numerous organizations including Woodman of the World. George was part of team that started NASCAR Days in Randleman, held pet

clinics at Rider’s In The Country twice a year, worked with the homeless and needy, Toys For Tots, The Christmas Toy Ride, Silversirus For Kids and numerous benefits for cancer awareness. He was involved with Randolph County CBA for many years. Many people from all over benefited from George’s kindness and generosity over the years. His love for his friends and his community will always be remembered. Brian Hall, singer of Fair Warning said, “George was not only shrewd businessman who knew how to promote his bands, he was my friend and a father figure to me for over 19 years. I will remember him till the end of my days.” Jimmy Hinson, manager and lead guitarist of Fair Warning said, “George went above and beyond helping his community, and people in need. He gave to so many organizations. I never met another club owner to open their heart so unselfishly.” Ronny Ward, longtime customer said, “George always had a smile for everyone and seemed happy, with a twinkle in his eye. He will be missed.” Mary Barnes offered, “I have been friends with George since the 80’s, working with him in several benefits. He was always giving of himself. Even though he was sick he still was present at the CBA Toy Ride in December. I saw his kindness and generosity and he will always be remembered for his huge heart. I’m going to miss the old fart.” Cathie Gavel said, “George was like a second father to me. He had so many people calling him dad than I can’t even recall them all. He was such a special person. He made everyone feel loved and needed. He was so wonderful to me; it is like

losing my father all over again. I can remember the day he opened Rider’s. He finally owned his own place. The joy in his eyes that he could now do and give of his heart to the community. Buddy Grainger said, “When George first opened Rider’s he called me for a meeting. His first question was what can I do and how can I help the CBA. He did many fund raisers over the years to support the CBA, never asking anything in return. It is hard for me to put into words what this man meant to me. He was a true friend, very open and giving, always going above and beyond to help so many in the community. He will be missed by so many, including myself. George’s last words with me was he told me to tell my wife he loved her and myself. I will always hold that in my heart.” To me George was a friend an employer, but most of all, at the lowest point in my life, he gave me a shoulder to lean on. As I read the quotes I always knew he gave whole hearty to every charity, every organization, and people in need. One person said he probably fed more people than any charity. He always had food, and he would always look out for his customers. He would give you a ride home himself if you needed it. This all makes him sound like a man larger than life. In my opinion, that was George Rider. My friend you were and are, love. Life just shifted a little when you left

By: Jerome Munna The 24th Annual Brunswick County Toy Run was held on December10, 2016. It was very cold start of the day but it slowly warmed up. We had over 100 motorcyclists and classic cars sign up at the Walmart parking lot on Main Street in Shallotte, NC. Brunswick County Sheriff Office did a great job escorting us on the 50-mile run. We gave away lots of door prizes at Brunswick Island Baptist Church where we were treated to lunch. Afterwards, we went back to Walmart to shop with the 120 children taking them in one on one and letting pick out what they wanted. We spent $15,700 on 120 children for Christmas this year. Everyone was touched by the experience. I just want to says thanks to all that participated and sponsored the 24th Annual Brunswick County Toy Run and I hope to see you next year.

Progressive International Bike Show JP Cycles Ultimate Builder Series By: Hank Thibedeau, Widow Maker Custom Design and Repair. I had received a phone call from Jeff Najar of Biker Pros approximately a 1 ½ weeks prior to the show informing me that we had been invited to the Progressive International Motorcycle Show /JP Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Washington, DC on the weekend of January 6, 2017. As excited as I was about going, I humbly declined. For a few reasons, one I was afraid of letting my customers down by not being here for them and I really did not think that “Mushu Suzie”, a bike that I built 6 years ago, would stand a chance. Meanwhile during all of this I had been putting together a proposal for BDL to start the process of hopefully mass producing our intake kits. While in the middle of all that I received another call from Jeff telling me that my contact for the proposal would be in DC for the show. I reached out to my contact and set up a tentative plan to have a meeting. Normally

we would be headed to the V-Twin Expo in Ohio at the end of January to gain new knowledge and further our business connections in the market. But DC proved to be the better choice. After some strong nudging by my wife and some words of encouragement, we made the call and registered for the event. I figured, what can I lose. I still had concerns for the bikes ability to be competitive. However, upon our arrival I was very satisfied in seeing the type of event this was. It was a builder’s show. I was completely blown away and pleased to see that the entire motorcycle world was represented at this event, with manufacturers like Ducati, BMW, Indian, Harley, Suzuki, Royal Enfield, etc. All of this with a large variety of big name venders, such as Rinehart Racing, Bell, JM Audio, etc. In the middle of all this there we were at the bottom of the entrance stairs up front on the red carpet for everyone to see along with a Jeremy Cupp bike and many others from across the east coast. Much to my surprise Mushu Suzie blew everybody away. I talked with everyone I could and answered what seemed like a thousand questions throughout the weekend. I set up a lunch meeting with my BDL contact for Saturday with myself, Jeff Najar and Patrick Murphy. Needless to say, the meeting was a success. He was very pleased and appeared to be excited with my product and expressed that even though the market is flooded with a variety of intake products that mine was something very unique and felt as there was a place for it. So, now is the waiting game to see what comes of it. I was given the opportunity to be interviewed on stage after Jeremy Cupp with one of the events people on Sunday afternoon. The cool thing was, we were the only 2 interviewed. That was a very flattering and humbling experience.

The weekend was a whirlwind of excitement and new found experiences. At the end of the day Sunday the awards were given. I was given the award for “Ingenuity” and “Runner Up for the Retro Mod Class”. With the “Runner Up” award comes an invite to the Finals in Chicago February 9-12. I am still not sure yet if we will be attending, but I am happy with the outcome. Of the two awards, I am most proud of the Ingenuity award. THAT makes me proud and gives me a new breath of air to really blow our upcoming bikes out of the water. At the end of it, we came away with a successful proposal meeting, a dealership with Rinehart Racing, two awards, and some great stories. We are looking forward to next year. By: Trisha Beasley Photos: Kenneth Armstrong and Chi Force A unity in the community weekend was held January 13th through January 16th hosted at Bigshow Auto Finishes, 2900 W. Broad Street in Elizabethtown, NC in efforts to bring the community together as ONE. Many preparations were made to bring a community to a breath-taking awe! This ride has been ongoing for a few years, but this year something was a little different. As it will sound a bit like a name game, here goes! Fletcher “Bigshow” Collins of Dedicated Soulz MC has hosted this ride over those years. This year he was contacted by James “Noshow” Herring of Confederate Riders MC. Bigshow and Noshow began talking and it was evident that they both had a lot of the same hopes and aspirations for their community. They discussed issues about misleading information that ensues fear and misunderstanding and under and over misrepresentations of the facts. Well, they decided and agreed that it was their mission to mend some fences that were broken a long time ago. A few community forums, Bladen Online interviews, as well as many social media posts and invites later, they are here to make a

change and be the leaders in the direction of that change. The weekend schedule was quite packed. The 13th was the meet and greet. This was the beginning of the weekend and some people started camping out that very night. The 14th was exciting with a unification ride, which was mostly comprised of the two MC’s. The 15th there was a seafood festival, camping, bonfire, and block party, all of which was hosted by Bigshow at Bigshow Auto Finishes. This night lasted until the early morning. It was a grand celebration with even more campers. The final day of the planned weekend was the 16th. The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday was the day of the annual MLK parade. The Unity Ride would follow directly after the final parade participants. In other words, they saved the best for last! Then for the final event, the entire community was invited to come back at Bigshow Auto Finishes and take part in a wonderful feast. The remainder of the story will focus on the 16th, Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. We were all gathered after an entire weekend of unity for the finale, the MLK annual parade where we all showed Bladen County that this

unity movement was built by the ROAR of 1000 bikers. The inspiration of one biker, the respect of another biker, as you all know, equals brotherhood and respect. There we all stood to ride, and, ride we did. There “We” are! And there is where “We” choose to remain! Fletcher “Bigshow” Collins hosted the best and most heartfelt unification effort I have even witnessed. CBS News covered the event reporting that 1000 bikers were in Elizabethtown participating in the MLK parade. We saw motorcycle clubs, social clubs, car clubs, and independent riders from Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Duplin, Robeson, and Sampson counties. These bikers and clubs united in Bladen County to lead by example as to how change really looks and feels! The entire weekend focused on the real reason of the MLK holiday and the “Dream” that many do not fully understand. Please bear in mind that we are referencing a “Dream” that was made famous and copyrighted in a 1963 speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Since that time, no doubt, many strides have been made to further the accomplishment of the “Dream.” Yet, still today, we see biased information from the media and other outlets that aim to compromise the integrity of us all. We can witness the power of the “I have a Dream” speech, but I imagine is hard for many of us to even adequately perceive the peril, struggles, and emotions of the adult in 1963. This “Dream” is in fact more than a half a century old. In times past the dream has moved forward. In other times, it seems to have moved backwards. A lot of people want to talk about the “Dream” but do you really know the sum of the important parts of this dream? It is filled with Love, Hope, and last, but not least, responsibility! On January 16th, 2017, we stand and “ride” together with strength, pride, and humility as it takes a little of all these to love and respect each other as we love ourselves. Even as individuals, this is a hard task regardless of race. So, this day, we ride as HUMAN BEINGS, as BROTHERS and SISTERS, as CHILDREN of the FATHER. Before the ride began, we all gathered to hear the route, directions, game plan and a prayer for the ride. What we heard was so much more! Bigshow called everyone over to listen. Come on “Bring it in” and we all gathered close to the side of the venue by the sound system. He said, “Look around. I know you see that all the faces are not the same color or shade, but we are here in unity for the same purpose. We are here to tear down the walls of division. Reminding everyone that this is not the final place for us to “ride.” We are all gonna leave this world and our hopes are to go to heaven after our work is done here. Then affirming that heaven is not separated in any form. There is no specific or designated heaven for races. We are all either going or not going to the same place! We need to get it right in our hearts now or how will we qualify to meet beyond the gates.” He also added, “You may see some things that you don’t understand. I want you all to trust today, show respect today, and know that we are all doing something great today, all of us together!” The point that was stressed was that we were all there for the same purpose and cause; “unity.” Unity is love and respect and that was the expectation of the entire weekend and guess what? That is exactly what everyone saw and felt the entire weekend! The love and respect was overflowing. I was so proud just to have been there to take part. Everyone was encouraged to lift each other up and to be thankful for their brothers and sisters. Just as you all know; we are our brother’s keeper. Everyone was there to show the L&R towards each other. Everyone was there for the same cause, the same movement, the same accord; and that was “Unity in our Community!” As well stated when we were all gathered there, we hope to be a light to other areas around us. In hopes that they rise to the challenge because we all know that “together we stand and divided we fall!” Bigshow went on to add that he wanted to give a shout out to Confederate Riders. He said upon meeting and talking with members of the MC; he learned that they have more in common than he realized. Our vision for unity is one of those commonalities. Next he proceeded to cover the ABCs of the ride as typical for any ride, and of course, a prayer followed. This particular prayer was unique and heartfelt. Maybe I could define it as a special prayer. During this prayer; every biker, every friend, every person there joined hands; not only in a prayer of safety for the ride, but a prayer of unity. A prayer that would have our love for each other to continue and grow day to day and year to year. The ride was spectacular! We were lined up six bikes wide

practically tire to tire and we covered blocks and blocks with the ROARING THUNDER OF UNITY in every rev of the motors, in every corner of each turn, and every smile on each and everyone’s face. The ride continued back out of the main downtown area and back to the venue. Upon our return the food was smelling sweet, the atmosphere was amazing, and the fellowship continued. The entire community was invited to this feast and it was wonderful. There were vendors, community members, young and old, and the entire spectrum of shades of the rainbow. All together making history right there in our little town making a great big difference! At the end of the weekend celebration, people were discussing how good everything was and how they really hated for it to end and that we all probably felt like we needed to have Tuesday off to rest. We were strong in efforts the entire weekend and it was well worth it. Everyone reported that they had a great time and they would participate for next year, while also stating that these unions should be continued throughout the 365 days until the next MLK celebration. There were numerous social media post from all involved; they all avowed the same thing. New friendships and new alliances were made, unity was well represented, and future fellowship plans were made. These newfound relationships, partnerships, and unions will help our community in endeavors to come, without doubt. I have already witnessed an alliance for an upcoming community event. These things should make us all proud to be a part of a “Dream” that we refuse to let go! This was truly an event to remember. A precedent was set for our community; a beacon meant to light the path for others. Not to mention, one heck of a great time! Special “THANKS” was given to the many hands and feet that made it all possible.

BFBF Motorcycle Raffle

By: Jeanie Hood Carter On December 24th, 2016, a winning ticket was pulled for “The Avatar” custom built shovelhead motorcycle raffle at The Redneck Yacht Club in Fayetteville, NC. This was the last event the foundation would be holding as the Bikers For Bikers Foundation since the nonprofit has legally changed its name. Originally the winning ticket was to be pulled at the 2016 Music Fest Rally, but the foundation had not met its ticket sales goal. The members and Board of Directors voted to extend the deadline to December 24th at which time someone would win a great Christmas prize. At approximately 2:00PM a little boy who was in the crowd was asked to pull the winning ticket while going live on the Facebook business page. The winner was Patrick Adkins from Hope Mills, NC. Patrick wasn’t present, so Mickey called him. At first Patrick thought it was a marketing scam! We all get those dreaded marketing calls. When Mickey explained he won the bike and everyone was yelling for him to come down and claim it, he came right on out to claim his new bike. Patrick was a little in shock and couldn’t believe he had won. He said he bought 2 tickets at the Music Fest Rally and several more at The Redneck Yacht Club from Terri Morgan. Tickets were sold as far away as Oregon,

As the saying goes, “It just takes one!” Patrick said he did not own a bike so he was very excited to win and be able to ride. The funny part of the event, several days before the drawing the bike wouldn’t start! It had been ridden less than 300 miles and was better than fine wine. Mickey thought something was wrong with the starter and we were feeling bad because we had to draw and it wouldn’t start. He ordered a new starter and had Patrick bring the bike to the house. Turned out, the starter was fine, but the support cap was a hair out of alignment. How funny is that? Well if you’re a bike builder, you will get it. Mickey said the bike cranked right up, he looked up and when Patrick heard his new bike for the first time he was all smiles. Patrick was great! Albeit January 6th was a chilly day, the rain held off for the Inaugural Frozen Buns Poker Run at Blue Ridge HarleyDavidson in Hickory, NC. The prize for the best hand was a $1000 gift card from Blue Ridge H-D and the worst hand would be awarded a $250 gift card. The proceeds from the run went to Sipe’s Orchard Home. Steve Amari, Marketing Manager for Blue Ridge H-D set the run at just over 110 miles, “Hey! It’s called Frozen Buns, not cool fingers,” Amari said. After it was all said and done, Amari and the crowd couldn’t believe the results. Steve said, “I have been doing poker runs for many years and I have never had this happen. Larry Lloyd and his wife were going to ride the run together, but Carol wasn’t feeling well that morning so she stayed home. Larry ended up playing both his wife’s hand and his. Carol’s hand, which was three kings, won the poker run, and Larry’s hand, ten high, was the worst hand! So, Larry rode his 2016 Tri Glide home with $1250 in Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson gift cards. If he would have won the 50/50 there would have been an investigation launched, but he didn’t. Congratulations to Larry and Carol, a very lucky couple.”

By: Rose and Lloyd The toy rides are over and a New Year has begun. I know how many thousands of bikers gave of their heart to help so many children this Christmas. I have a Christmas story and maybe this will be the last this year. In October, a dear friend of mine, a single father of three small children had emergency life threatening surgery. I knew with no disability insurance; Christmas would not exist for these children. I made a few calls and United Riders took all info and said they would present this case at their next meeting. Then I called Trax Tavern in Thomasville, and talk to Jana and Rusty, the owners, about bringing a small tree with the names on it to the bar to see if I could get some help. Jana took all information and said they would handle it. Over the next few weeks, the bar and some great customers started getting things together. They gathered stuff the kids might want, and above and beyond, getting coats, boots, clothes, even stuff for the dad. When I went to pick it all up, my explorer was full! Then United Riders called and a family had also adopted them. Again, they brought me bags and bags of so many special gifts and clothes. All in all, these three children and the father had an abundance of blessings on Christmas morning. I received beautiful pictures of happy faces, but for the family’s privacy, I have only shared them with the Angels that made this possible. My reason for this story is when three children almost lost their father, a miracle turned it around. A group of biker Angels made sure they had a wonderful Christmas morning. Thank you Rusty, Jana, and the great customers of Trax Tavern, and the anonymous family from United Riders. From the father and myself, words can never express the overwhelming feeling of love and gratitude. This is just another example, proof that there are Biker Angels everywhere.

Nazareth Children’s Home Christmas Toy Run

By: Darby Dillard All week long, I’ve been reminiscing about our Nazareth Children’s Home Christmas Toy Run held on Saturday 1210-2016. It was another successful Toy Run/Party at Nazareth Children’s Home. It brought our yearly events, including 4 quarterly Birthday Parties, to an end for 2016. I’ll always be amazed at what can happen when people put forth their efforts to bring some much-needed joy and laughter into the lives of others, especially young people, who haven’t had the chance to make their own decisions. Their choices weren’t choices. They inherited the circumstances handed to them by other people making bad choices. So, it’s always a pleasure to see them smile and laugh while we are there! Our day started at Speedway H-D in Concord, NC. It was only around 35 degrees, but we still had about 24 motorcycles show up. At 12 noon, the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Department, led by Lieutenant Arron Rankin, had their briefing and off we went. I greeted one and thought I’d already greeted the other. HAHA! Off we went through Concord to Bostian Heights Volunteer Fire Department, where we rendezvoused with eight more riders, and off to Nazareth we rolled. Our other volunteers had our Christmas meal awaiting on us, so, after our greeting, we were able to enjoy our Christmas meal. Our meal was prepared by these wonderful volunteers and provided by generous donations by many of them. the hams were provided by Food Lion, and prepared by Jackie, with Carolina Siteworks. Our turkeys were provided by Mike Ingersoll’s Uptown Catering Company. The “Rockwell Gang” brought a room full of deserts. Danny and Emily Costner brought the Pepsi products and Little Debbie Snacks and Jimmy’s restaurant in Mint Hill, was responsible for the gravy. Our BIG surprise this year was, Raising Glory. One of their players, Tim Misenheimer, contacted me, through Cristina Miller, and asked if they could come play. Not only did we welcome them, but we were blessed with a wonderful Love Offering from the Gospel Band. They came to play and blessed us tremendously with their music and their gift to

The Ray Price Chili Cook-Off By: Kris Weiss What better way to start the year off than to have a huge chili cook-off? Saturday, January 14th was filled with activity from the very start. People began to ride in early that morning for the Annual Polar Bear Ride-In that always coincides with the cook-off. Although it was a balmy 45 degrees, it still took a little gumption to don the winter riding gear and straddle the bike. Everyone who rode in got to spin the Nitro Prize Wheel to win great prizes including a free 5K service, $50 gift card and lots of other awesome coupons. The Ray Price Service Department put on the HighPerformance Seminar at 10:30 AM helping those who wanted more horse power to learn the tricks of the trade. Following the seminar, everyone celebrated Jean Price’s birthday with cake, with just a few candles on it, and a round of Happy Birthday sung by adoring customers and thankful staff. She was a bit surprised as the employees kept her from knowing any details of the celebration. There was plenty of chocolate cake for everyone. It was finally time for the chili tasting to begin. But first, we heard from Shelby Dunn, a tenth grader from Raleigh, who was nominated to participate in the Student of the Year program with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society to compete with other students in the area to see who could raise the most money for this worthy cause. She spoke of the personal reasons why she is working to raise money for a cure of blood cancer, stating that both her parents had family members who were touched by this disease. There were fifteen tasty entries with names ranging from Dad’s Stupid Chili to Good Chili. When it was all finished and the chili ladles dropped to the bottom of the crock pots, there was a tie for First place. First Place was shared by Steve Blackwood with his Good Chili and Pam Fuerst with her Boiler Maker Chili. Our Runner Up was Richard Barfield with his Sgt. B’s Chili. Pit Stop Jack Rhue Benefit

By: Johnny Reb January 7th was a great day to be at the Pit Stop Bar and Billiards in Kinston, NC. Having fun and raising money for Jack Rhue, a very nice guy, was the cause. Jack is a regular customer at the Pit Stop, and loved by all, which was plain to see by the turn out at his benefit. The customers at the Pit Stop are some of the most generous and giving people you will find, so when Jack was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, his friends came together and rallied around him. The owner of the Pit Stop is Joy Bostic. When one of her customers needs help, she is the first to step up and get things done. She decided to have an inside poker hand, and pool tournament. When I got there the place was jumping. People were having a blast inside and congregating outside at the picnic tables. Ghost Riders MC members DOC and Bubba made BBQ

chicken plates. That was some “come to Jesus” food! After eating and washing it down with some ice cold adult beverages, I had a chance to talk to Jack and get to know him. Jack is a native of Kinston NC, and a Veteran of the 82nd airborne. He served from 1977 to 1980 and is very proud of his service, as are we. After his hitch was up he came back to Kingston and married Wilma Jones and had two children. He and Wilma have been married for 38 years and now have 6 beautiful grandchildren. Joy decided that 100% of the proceeds for the chicken plates and 50% of the poker hand and pool tournament were going to help Jack fight this battle with cancer. Great people coming together for a great guy, that is how we roll in Eastern NC, and our friend Joy Bostic is a perfect example of that caring and generosity. Hey Jack, your hair WILL grow back!

Suddenly, a blonde woman in the 4th row stands on her chair and starts shouting, “I’ve heard enough of your stupid ass blonde jokes! What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does the color of a person’s hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It’s guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as a person, because you and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general and all in the name of humor!” The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde yells, “You stay out of this, mister! An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execution. His last-minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed. As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about, “What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you been? Dinner is cold and I’m not reheating it”. And on and on and on. Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs. While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband’s client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight. Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go upstairs and give him the good news. As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over, naked, drying his legs and feet. “They’re not hanging Wright tonight,” she said. He whirled around and screamed, “For the love of god woman, don’t you ever stop?!”. Earl and Bubba are quietly sitting in a boat fishing, chewing tobacco, and drinking beer when suddenly Bubba says, “Think I’m gonna divorce the wife – she ain’t spoke to me in over 2 months. Earl spits overboard, takes a long, slow sip of beer and says, “Better think it over; women like that are hard to find.” A blonde driving a car became lost in a snowstorm. She didn’t panic however, because she remembered what her dad had once told her. “If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, just wait for a snow plow to come by and follow it.” Sure enough, pretty soon a snow plow came by, and she started to follow it. He catches Bob jerkin off, when asked what he is doing, Bob replies, “I’m Banging Willy’s old lady while he’s on his run to Chicago.”

The Louisiana State Police had received numerous reports of illegal cock fighting being held in the area around Abbeville and had sent their famous Detective Boudreaux from Thibodeaux to investigate.
