ell, the weather and all the drama that went with it sure took its toll on riders in our area in March. We got to ride a few days that were in the upper 60’s and low 70’s and the rest of the days were sleet, snow, rain, and freezing rain. So now it is officially spring and daylight savings time has sprung the clocks forward giving us a whole additional hour to ride in the evenings. I am lovin’ it! Along with these welcome changes, the motorcycle community has awakened. There are many events to attend in April that you will find listed in the exploded Cruisin’ Calendar in the front of this edition (#189) of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. You can view the best collection of event listings on the entire east coast in the magazine and online at FullThrottleMagazine.com. We even have a Cruisin’ Calendar update service that you can subscribe to if you like. Each week we send out all the events that are scheduled for the next weekend so it comes right to your in box and all you have to do to get this free service is click on “Subscribe To Events Update E-mail” button on the right hand side of our home page. You will begin getting the weekend events the very next time we send it out. So check out the benefits, bike blessings, dice runs, swap meets, bike shows, rodeos, boot camps, memorial runs, spoker runs, Easter basket rides, scholarship runs, and the Outer Banks Bike Rally listed in this issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and GO RIDE SOMEWHERE! And so the riding season gets under way in the Carolinas. Squeeze every ounce of pleasure out of your rides and ride defensively. The cagers are not used to seeing us on the roads and we do not want you to fall victim to some inattentive texter on the highway.

9th Annual Hogs & Rags Rally To give you an idea how this ALL started, let me tell you. Mr. Gardner Altman likes cars. He has always had a passion for them. He had many great friends and they happen to ride Harleys. Well, Mr. Gardner never could really adapt to riding two wheels like he loved the four wheel ride, but he always wanted to be a part of the fun run raisers and benefit rides so he came up with a better idea! Combine the two together! HOGS & RAGS RALLY is a charity event that combines convertibles and motorcycles, good food, good causes, and a good time. What a great idea. All makes and models of bikes and trikes are welcome, and street rods and muscle cars are, too. One thing we want to be clear about is even though the name of the event is HOGS & RAGS and hogs usually represent Harley-Davidsons and rags usually mean convertible cars - and that is how the event started - we don’t want the name to mislead people. We want all kinds of motorcycles and all kinds of cars to participate. This is a great event, which supports wonderful causes and we want everyone to know they are welcome. Last year we had all types of motorcycles, convertibles, and street rods, but really, if anyone came and said they wanted to drive a pick-up truck, a moped, or any type of transportation, it doesn’t matter. WE WANT YOU! Also, this year’s event will be led by the new Mayor, Nat Robertson and his wife Kim, who are also motorcycle enthusiasts. They will be leading us along with police escort all the way to Myrtle Beach, SC. Knowing that the ride will benefit others just makes the day that much better. Proceeds will benefit the Green Beret Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation. Even though there is a police escort for the entire ride from Fayetteville, NC to Myrtle Beach, SC, the Hogs & Rags organizers know that keeping hundreds of riders safe is a huge undertaking. Before the ride we give them a safety briefing and it covers the route, hand signals and things to do in a ride and how to ride safely as a group. AND it is nice to have the cops in front of you instead of behind you! While everyone loves a good time, raising money for a charity is a big part of the Hogs & Rags mission. For anyone who rides or chooses to donate, this is where your money will go: American Cancer Society: The goal of the American Cancer Society (ACS) is to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from cancer. They are committed to fighting cancer through balanced programs of research, education, patient service, advocacy, and rehabilitation. Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation: Despite ongoing efforts to provide reading and educational resources to our nation’s youth, illiteracy is still a problem in the United States. Founded in 1998, this charity is to provide literacy education
and character development resources for children K-6th grade. It strives to increase literacy in our nation’s youth by providing support to various early learning and literacy-based initiatives across the country. Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation’s mission is to improve literacy, education, and character development among America’s youth by providing support for various early literacy and learning-based initiatives nationwide. The foundation approves grants to qualified projects and institutions that endeavor to instill strong reading and education skills and solid character-development traits in America’s youth. Money raised at the rally benefit children in Cumberland County. Find out more about Kidsville News at KidsvilleNews.com Green Beret Foundation: The Green Beret Foundation provides unconventional resources to facilitate the special needs of our wounded, ill, and injured and imparts unique support to the Special Forces community in order to strengthen readiness and uphold Green Beret traditions and values. The United States Army Special Forces, commonly known as the Green Berets, produces some of our nation’s finest and most elite warriors. They fight across a broad spectrum of missions in the pursuit of freedom for those oppressed and to protect our nation from those who seek to do us harm. They are known as our country’s quiet professionals. Registration starts at 7:30 am on April 26th at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, where there will be coffee and donuts. Kickstands up at 9am, the Cumberland County Sheriff will escort the riders to Altman’s farm, the Rockin’ “A” Ranch, in White Oak, where everyone will be served a full breakfast. Then back in the saddle again at 10:45 am and the next stop will be the NC/SC State line in Tabor City for a water and bathroom break, and then continuing the ride and ending at Broadway at the Beach, Laundry’s in Myrtle Beach to enjoy a tasty and filling lunch. There will be a reverse raffle of $2500, door prizes, music, and great socializing for a great cause. The entire event ends around 3pm, leaving plenty of time to make it back to Fayetteville or to enjoy other surrounding activities in Myrtle Beach. Registration is $50 per bike or car and $30 for each additional passenger. This includes a T-shirt, breakfast and a lunch, and a great contribution to the great charities. So please plan on joining us on April 26th this year. You can register in advance online or the day of event. Call Wendy Rogers at 910-818-0458 for any detail information. Also this year, on the Friday night before (April 25th), we will be having a Pre-Registration party at SPEAKEASY’s at 3983 Sycamore Dairy Road in Fayetteville at 7 pm. So come join us there for food and live music and get your registration completed to reduce your stress the morning of the ride. I hope to see y’all there.

As is customary, those in attendance that made a donation to benefit the Burlington Ladies of Harley qualified for each of the 3 members participating to serve them an ample portion of chili. Several varieties of chili were served giving a variety of different flavors to this year’s event. Baked goods were also sold making this very popular event successful as usual. All of the contestants served up some great chili making it difficult to pick which was the best. When all was said and done and all the votes were counted, for the second year in a row, Myra Crawford was named the 2014 Burlington L.O.H. Chili Bean “Queen”. Myra also received a beautiful trophy and a $50 cash prize for her winning recipe. Myra will also represent the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter at the 28th Annual Bike Show and Chili Cook-Off to be held at Rommel HarleyDavidson in Durham, NC on Saturday, March 15th where several of the State’s H.O.G. Chapters will bring their best entrants to compete for H.O.G. Club bragging rights! Congratulations to Myra and thanks also to participants Linda Woody and Linda Fowler for helping make this such a fun and successful event! Thanks to Down Home Harley-Davidson for hosting the event and for their warm hospitality and

The Forgotten Sons MC Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Fundraiser
By: Judy Bortz On Saturday, March 3rd The Forgotten Sons MC, Surf City Chapter held a fundraiser at Beach House Bar & Grill in Wilmington to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It was a beautiful winter day, in the sixties and sunny, the kind of day we are SUPPOSED to have here! There were wings and munchies served all day, a bike show, 50/50 drawing, auction, and door prizes. The band Closing Tyme, and DJ Jerry kept the music going, and the President of The Forgotten Sons MC even got up and sang a song! The Forgotten Sons MC is a group of active duty and retired military veterans, and most of the fundraising they do is for military causes. They all give a piece of their lives, as do their families, serving to keep the rest of us safe. This fundraiser was started because Alina Coca, daughter of the Sargent of Arms of the MC was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes herself, and the club wanted to give back to the organization that helped Alina. The disease comes on quickly, and the symptoms can be overlooked easily. Alina at 8 years of age began complaining of blurry vision, going to the bathroom more frequently, and drinking a lot of water. She was tired often, and lost a lot of weight before she started regaining her health. There is no worse feeling for anyone than to watch their child suffer. You are helpless, and it breaks your heart. Type 1 Diabetes (or Juvenile Diabetes) is a disease where the pancreas no longer produces insulin. Although there is no cure, with insulin therapy and other treatments children can learn to manage the disease and live long healthy lives. The key to this is research, and JDRF supports much of that. You can visit www.JDRF.org to learn more about Type 1 Diabetes and to donate to help fund important research. Everyone had a great time at the event, especially Alina and her friends; it was great to see the kids being kids! The club was pleased with the turnout and the money they raised, which will all go to the local JDRF office to help in our community. Those are the fundraisers that I love the most. We have to help ourselves, and our communities first! The Forgotten Sons MC has many more events planned for the coming year, here in Wilmington, and all across the state. Any veteran group or cause is good to get behind! Support the ones who keep you free! Locally, on May 24th, the MC will be holding its next fundraiser Pets for Vets, at Flounders Bar. Come on out and thank a veteran for all they do!

First Hell Hole ABATE Poker Run By: Old Spook The Hell Hole Chapter of ABATE of South Carolina has been in existence for 10 years. Dewaine “Wiggy” Wiggins, ABATE Low Country Area Coordinator and one of the organizers of the run, informed me that their chapter raised over $1000 on this, its first run. 35 members participated in the run that included stops at The Steel Horse Bar, Twyla’s of Ridgeville, Skynard’s of St. George, Richard and Mama Jane’s of Holly Hill, the VFW Post 9509 of Moncks Corner, and finished up at the party at the Steel Horse Bar in Moncks Corner. It’s great to see a dedicated group of riders supporting biker’s rights. The money raised will be spent on letter writing parties that are held to address the issues of biker’s rights. They also make contributions to support the various conferences that need to be attended concerning biker rights. This chapter also finds a needy family to support at Christmas and holds a party for them. Susan, owner of The Steel Horse Bar, donated the meat and its preparation for the party, while members, themselves, offered up side dishes for the event. I was intrigued by the presence of an antique Indian motorcycle that was displayed on a shelf the Steel Horse. I’ll need to revisit to find out more

about it. It seems all the prizes that were won were donated back to the chapter or to other charities. Best hand was $100, 2nd place was $50, and worse hand was $25. Worst hand was being donated to a veteran’s charity. Apparently, all went according to plan since the chapter will be holding this event again next year.

World Class Powersports Victory Vegas 8-Ball Giveaway By: Buzz Shane Wiles (GM) and Krista Valade (Marketing Guru and woman of intrigue) of World Class Powersports came to me with the idea that WCP wanted to give away a brand new Victory Vegas 8-Ball. I knew this was a great idea, I mean, who doesn’t want a free motorcycle! Besides, this is an American made Victory motorcycle, with a 106ci V-Twin and black gloss paint (the way a motorcycle should be) that looks great and rides even better! Plans were made, advertisements were run, and now all we needed was some good weather! On February 22, winter took the day off and allowed beautiful 70º sunny weather shine down on World Class Powersports in High Point, NC. The event started at 2pm and the parking lot was overflowing shortly there after! I got there and unloaded some FT magazines and started snapping pictures. There was a blockbuster line to register for FREE tickets for the Victory Vegas 8-Ball, and before long the over flow parking lot across the street was a sea of chrome. Some sweet Victory motorcycles and accessories occupied the World Class Powersports showroom for anyone interested. The band Jacked Up was set up on and jamming on a flat bed trailer supplied by Tim Nall of A&M Crane & Rigging. I usually stay away from cover bands, but these guys nailed some awesome tunes! There were plenty of folks milling around taking in the sunshine and tunes. Food vendors were set up with a variety of munchies including sandwiches and wraps, pizza, and chicken wings. Rusty Jones Customs had a booth set up showing off his custom Victory accessories and a flame throwing Victory Cross Country, which, of course, was a crowd-pleasing attraction. During a band break Royce and Heather Palau (WCP Owners) set up a twerking contest. The crowd gathered around and watched a few brave souls shake what they had and the winners grabbed up some extra chances to win that sweet Victory. Finally the hour of the giveaway was here. Anticipation was high and the crowed went silent. Krista and Royce took the stage and allowed a sweet little girl to pull the winning ticket and Shane Bryant, owner of Davis Roofing, was the new owner of the Victory Vegas 8-Ball! Congrats Shane! The folks at World Class Powersports are just that, World Class. They put on a great event and gave away a heck of a nice motorcycle! World Class has a showroom full of Victory motorcycles, accessories, and know how. They also offer daily demo rides. So if you are in need of anything Victory, stop by World Class Powersports, they will hook you up. They are located at 2924 N. Main Street in High Point, NC or you can visit them online at www.WorldClassPowersports.com. Make sure you tell ‘em that you read about them in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.

1st Annual Reverse Raffle To Benefit The Biscuit Foundation By: Terri Wall, Kay Teague, & Scott Wicker On Saturday, February 22nd, Lucky’s Saloon along with The Compassionate Bikers of Alamance County held a reverse raffle to benefit The Biscuit Foundation. The Biscuit Foundation is a non-profit organization co-founded by Debbie Fuller and Robin Sheppard in 2008 to assure pet owners peace of mind by providing short or long term care for their pet in the event of the pet owners terminal illness, hospitalization, recovery from surgery, or sickness. Placement services are provided for pets whose owners have entered a nursing facility or have passed away. The name Biscuit Foundation was because Biscuit was the name of co-founder Debbie Fuller’s dog.

The turn out for the event was overwhelming. The beautiful weather was a welcomed sight considering all the bad weather in the area recently. 400 tickets were sold for the reverse raffle for a 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. All 400 tickets for the raffle were put into a hopper and drawn out one at a time until the last envelope containing the winning ticket is drawn and the winner is announced. If you have never been to a reverse raffle for an item such as a motorcycle, it generates a lot of excitement among everyone present, even for those who did not purchase a ticket. The drawing took a little over two hours or so and when the last ticket was drawn, Mike Frances of Randleman, NC owned that winning ticket and the 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. Man was he excited. Congratulations to Mike! All right here it comes! Take a deep breath. Through the raffle and 50/50 ticket sales over $14,000 was raised for the Biscuit Foundation. We think Robin and Debbie are still in a state of shock. Thank both of you for all you have done for all those precious pets you have cared for through the Biscuit Foundation. Both of you are Saints! A Special Thanks goes to Barry Hicks and Chuck Gates of Lucky’s Saloon for taking on this event and to their bartenders Sara Lynn and Julie for all their hard work. Thanks also to Kay Teague, Terri Wall, Carolyn Ayers, Kayla Knight, Daniel & Jessica Qualls, Lori Webster, Carla Cobb-Money, Steve Sharpe, Rene Tamol, Debbie Fuller, and Robin Sheppard. Thanks again to Kenny Money for being our MC for another great event. Thanks also to Jeff Wood and BT for keeping the food going throughout the day. We would also like to thank “Biscuit” for making an appearance and keeping everyone entertained with all his favorite dance moves. Thanks to everyone from the Humane Society for all your help and support. Thanks to Sunshine Realty & Property Management for their donation of the meal vouchers and Chrystal and Shay for making them look so nice! A Big Thanks to everyone that participated, sold raffle tickets, and bought a raffle ticket for this worthy cause. All this would not have been possible without your support. Ride Safe! See all of you at the Miles for Mutts Benefit on Saturday, April 13th.

Nazareth Children’s Home 1st Quarter Birthday Party
By: Darby L. Dillard I can’t tell you “Thank You” enough. So that’s how I’ll begin. “Thank You” to each and everyone who participated in the first birthday party of the year. I want to thank Speedway HD, The Buffalo Troopers, “Betty’s Gang”, “The Rockwell Gang”, Smiley’s Cycle Works, Sic Customs, Law Petroleum, and everyone who visited BikersWithACause.com to choose a gift. I’ll admit I almost drove my pick-up, but I’m glad we rode the bikes. It was around 38º when I left the house, but it warmed up during the day to make for a great ride! Betty and her group set up the assembly hall, and The Buffalo Troopers served us lunch, which is provided by Speedway HD. That was followed by cake and ice cream provided by our wonderful friend and sister Sharon. Thank you girl! Then came my favorite part; singing “Happy Birthday” and presenting the children with their gifts. In the attached picture is the group that arrived from Speedway HD. I usually forget to take a group picture, so I was happy they wanted to go ahead and do that first. The only problem is I didn’t realize the “Rockwell Gang” was inside. So some very important people are not in the picture. Our supporters from the Rockwell area are always (and I mean
ALWAYS) there for these children. All in all it was a great day. Thank you again to all who help with this event! Please feel free to contact me at bikerswithacause.com, email, FB or by phone (704-545-1062 or Cell 704-995-4097) if you have any questions. And remember, you do not have to ride a motorcycle to join in on the fun. The next party is 5-3-14. I hope to see YOU there! If you’ve never been to Nazareth, I urge you to come join us! If you haven’t been lately, we miss you! Sincerely and God Bless all!

2nd Annual Make-A-Wish Foundation Benefit Rocks Pawley’s Island By: Everette “EZ” Short It seems we’ve all been rocked on our heels and held hostage in the South by snow storms, ice storms, freezing rain storms, thunderstorms, and just plain crappy winter weather, more suited for the yankee states, since the start of this year. Then along comes Sunday, March 2nd and the temps soared to 74º, bringing coveys of bikes outta the shed and onto the highways from every direction. Once again, the flowers were singing and it was Sunday Funday when we saddled up with the Copperheads MC for a ride to The Island Bar and Grill in Pawley’s Island to check out the 2nd Annual Make-A-Wish Foundation Benefit. The Midway Fire and Rescue and IAFF 3671 hosted a kickin’ chili cook-off with fire trucks, bright colored tents with beach wares in the square. It was a real celebration with the Foreclosures band playing some really good tunes under the sprawling old oak tree. There were over 20 local restaurants offering up food, with kids and dogs running amok in every direction. We met up with the SC Axemen MC on the back deck for a few cold ones and a lot of motorcycles pulled in as the sun blazed brightly overhead. Soon enough, the sun began to droop and we headed back, promising to meet up on the next Sunday Funday. Here at the beach, you can’t go anywhere without seeing people you know, but it helps when you bring a few dozen or so friends with you to make a simple day into a celebration of life. So, if you’re local to the beach, reach out, check FB and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar, phone a friend, and join us on a ride. As we all know, the next day temperatures dropped by over 40º and our neighbors to the north suffered through storms, power outages, and closed roads. Not to worry, by the time
you read this, spring will have sprung and we’ll be on the road again. Check out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar to find a ride near you and make your own memories out of a simple day.

Polar Bear Ride For Ghost By: Dale “Razer” Ray On February 22nd Hard Core Motorcycle Ministry held a benefit ride for one of our brothers behind bars, Keith “Ghost” Lowe. The event was held at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Siler City, NC home of the Hard Core Motorcycle Ministry and Mission:M25 ministries. “Ghost” was hit by a tool box that flew off the back of a pick-up truck traveling south bound on I-95 while riding back from the 9/11 2 Million Bikers To DC event. “Ghost” swerved to miss it, but caught the corner and it closed his foot up in his footboard. Having sustained some broken bones and massive bruising, “Ghost” has been out of work and his Hard Core Motorcycle Ministry brothers sponsored a “Polar Bear Run” with 100% of the proceeds going to “Ghost” and his family. Approximately 88 Bikers from Hard Core Motorcycle Ministry, Level Cross Disciples Motorcycle Ministry, Bikers For Christ Motorcycle Ministry, Redemption Motorcycle Club, Mission:M25 Motorcycle Ministry, Soldiers of Mercy Motor-
cycle Ministry, and other independent riders attended. We raised over $2500 and more was pledged to come in the weeks ahead. Hard Core Motorcycle Ministry would like to say a “Big Ol’ THANK YOU!” to everyone for coming out and helping “Ghost” out!

The Harley Shop At The Beach Roasts ‘Em
By: Everette “EZ” Short For some of us, spring can’t come soon enough and on Saturday, March 15th The Harley Shop at the Beach in North Myrtle Beach threw down the red carpet with a free oyster roast, chicken bog cook off, and motorcycle stunt show. The weather was wonderful, considering that the days before and after were inhospitably cold. When Harley-Davidson says they’re having an oyster roast, they mean it. On the side of the showroom, there were two big four by eight plywood tables with cut outs on each end for the trashed shells that come with the shucking. The epic amount of oyster feasting went on for hours with no slack on the crustaceans pouring out of giant steamer pots every few minutes. There was also a chicken bog cook off where who knows who won what, but we were all winners with free food that couldn’t be beat! Then there was live music and, at about 2:30, a mini-bike stunt show from Dane Britt and company. Let me tell you that Dane really knows how to play to a crowd. All this was done to benefit the North Strand Helping Hand Foundation to feed the less fortunate. All in all, I love oysters, so I was very impressed and thoroughly full by the time we rode to the bar with a dozen or so friends. Come by and see the great deals at The Harley Shop at the Beach located at 4002

Durham HOG 28th Annual Bike Show And Chili Cook Off
By: Kathy Johnson I am not quite sure how the Durham HOG Chapter 3382 lucks out with good weather for their bike show chili cook off every year, but they do. Considering the freak snow and sleet we have been having I think everyone was a little unsure. Maybe they created a biker almanac, whatever the case, the weather is on their side every year. When we turned on Muldee Street it was fender to back fender waiting to get near Rommel Harley-Davidson. The nice thing was that it is so well organized, right down to allocating people on Muldee and in the parking lot, to shoot you were you needed to go. Pulling in this year was a little different. Rommel made it a whole lot easier to shop. The second you got off your bike they had a tent set up with all your “must haves” outside ready for you to purchase. After eyeing up what they had it was just nice to talk with every one we have known for so many years. It was the Durham HOG Club’s 28th Annual at this point it is like a well-oiled machine. They have it down pat. They are set up. You could get your entry form to vote for your favorite bike. You could get your (hopefully, lucky) ticket for the 2014 Super Low 883 Sportster or play one of their games. If you were hungry they were cooking hot dogs as hard as they could go and don’t forget about the chili cook off! As everyone turns out for this event, it is with out a doubt, I think, the largest turn out I have seen in all the years I have been going. On a personal note, aside from every thing that they have to offer they are just super helpful and nice people that I enjoy seeing. It was getting near announcement time for all the lucky winners so I quick went inside Rommel to check out all the new stuff inside. It can take a while when you are stopping and talking all the way. When I got inside it was like Christmas time at a mall. It was packed, but I will say sales staff couldn’t be happier or more helpful. The selection of bikes was wall to wall. They are utilizing all the floor space. It was full. If you didn’t get a chance to test ride your favorite bike that day, stop back and give the one you had your eye on a test ride. If you didn’t get a chance to get your Rommel Rewards card while you were there, stop back for that, too. Every time you visit you can swipe it and get points. You get points for stopping in and when you make a purchase, so they add up quickly and you can redeem them for something free. Ok I have made you wait long enough so I will give you your 2014 winners. Let’s start out with the Chili Cook Off
Winners: People’s Choice - (you guessed it) Burlington HOG, again. Judges Choice was Gail Greene Durham HOG. HD Touring Stock With Tour Pack: 1st Place - Roger Fowler, 2nd Place - John Pruett. HD Touring Stock Without Tour Pack: 1st Place - Jim Davis, 2nd Place - Tim Stephenson. Sportster: 1st Place - Charlie Smith, 2nd Place - Becky Padilla. FX Rigid Mount: 1st Place - Robby Robbins, 2nd Place - Eddie Featherston. I must say Robby Robbins wins a trophy each year and if they gave a trophy away for best mother, Bonnie Robbins, his mother would get it. She is a firecracker! FX & Dyna Rubber Mount: 1st Place - Johnny Bart. This one was as close as it gets! FL Rigid Mount: 1st Place - Roger Fowler, 2nd Place - Chris Moore. Modified Harley: 1st Place - Clinton Jones, 2nd Place - Chris Daye. V Rod: 1st Place - Chad Thompson. Sport Bike: 1st Place - Johnny Baily. Antique: 1st Place – Richard. Other V-Twin: 1st Place - Ron Biscott. Factory Trike: 1st Place - Myra Crawford. Best In Show went to Ron Biscott. Congratulation’s to all. After the trophies went out it was time to spin the tumbler with all the raffle tickets in it. If you want to see hundreds of people be quiet, give away a bike. Third place for a Rommel H-D $150 gift certificate was pulled first and the winner was Mammie Taylor. Buy this time the crowd’s full attention was focused on the hearing their name. The second place winner, recipient of a $300 Rommel H-D Card, was Danny Temple. Then it was total silence until you heard the yell from the first place winner of the Super Low 883 Sportster, Brian O’Briant. Brian purchased his ticket the day of the show and I am sure he will never forget the feeling he had when they called his name. The money raised from the bike raffle helps Durham Salvation Army, Durham Rescue Mission, Pretty In Pink Foundation, Special Olympics North Carolina, Exchange Clubs’ Family Center, and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Quite a lot of people were commenting on the band that day. It was MR Cat Band www.mrcatband.com. They did a great job. Well, until next year, the Durham HOG Chapter 3382 is so thankful for all the support from you, the venders, and they couldn’t say enough about all the support from Rommel Harley-Davidson. Don’t wait a year to visit Rommel Harley-Davidson. They are located at 300 Muldee Street in Durham, NC (RommelHD. com) and they are open Mon - Sat: 10 am - 7 pm and Sun: 10 am - 6 pm to serve you. When Headlights Were Lit With Matches
miles to Pike’s Peak summit as well as the first to ride round-trip on motorized vehicles of any kind. They challenged the deep sands and rocky trails between Denver and Salt Lake that caused repeated spills. They even got lost in the desert for several hours with very little water when a kindly old gentleman appeared seemingly out of nowhere and gave them water and directions, a ‘road angel’ for sure. The women triumphed over these trials and arrived in San Francisco on September 2nd with “New York air in their tires”. Augusta wrote that the whole trip was “..a perilous one for two girls alone. It had hazards, but it had its pleasures, too”. Their 65 day, 5,500 mile meandering trek to California placed the Van Burens in the history books as the first women to make a transcontinental journey on two solo motorcycles. The newspapers and motorcycling magazines of the day provided adequate coverage of their trek, but focused more on the machines and the historical achievement was described as a vacation, rather than the crusade it was. After all the accomplishments and demonstrations, Adeline’s application to become a military dispatch rider was rejected and she went on to earn her law degree from NYU and become a lawyer. Augusta became a pilot and flew with the “99s”, a women’s flying group founded by Amelia Earhart. These women broke the stereotypes, proving that women could do anything a man could do. And in the words of Augusta Van Buren, “…and it all goes to prove that woman can if she will”.

DEMO EVENT
Donʼt Consume Alcohol And Drive A Motorcycle
By: WildThing In a time when women weren’t allowed to vote, wear pants, or fight in the coming war America was about to enter (WWI), two “society girls” decided to make a statement about how ridiculous these edicts of society were. Also, there was a National Preparedness Movement going on to prepare for entry in the war, sisters Adeline and Augusta Van Buren felt that women could help in a direct manner and were determined to prove that women could serve their country as dispatch riders for the military, freeing up men for other tasks. Adeline was an English teacher and Augusta, a business school correspondent, were prepared for the challenge of their endeavor as both were award-winning athletes who swam, skated, sprinted, and rode horses. Adeline designed their travel outfits that included red leather coats, breeches, leggings, and red leather caps. Their 1916 journey was sponsored, in part, by Hendee Manufacturing Company, who provided the women with two 61-cubic-inch Indian Power Plus motorcycles with tires provided by Firestone Tire Company. Adeline and Augusta had mudguards installed on their three-speed Indians and, yes, the headlights had to be lit with matches. Early Indian motorcycle headlamps and rear lamps were acetylene gas powered. They had a canister mounted just behind the seat that you had to fill with carbide and water to produce the acetylene gas that would be piped to the headlamp and then open the lamp’s glass front and light the burner with matches. The sisters, descendants the 8th President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, prepared for the trip by incrementally accumulating long distance rides in New York and then set off on July 4, 1916 from Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn. They headed west toward Chicago amidst journalistic fanfare referencing the sponsoring companies and the sisters’ “masculine outfits”. Between Chicago and the Rockies, their riding outfits, also attracted the attention of small town police, who arrested them several times. They always got released with a reprimand for wearing men’s clothing, criticized for ‘displaying their charms in public’ and summarily shooed out of town. Their enthusiasm not one bit dampened, the Van Burens rode their cycles up the treacherous paths of Pike’s Peak in Colorado and back down. This credited them with being the first women to ride the

Come See Me At
Breakfast Anytime!
By: Anchor In the beginning of March, I was asked to come out for an event to raise money to help the local elderly with power and/ or heat expenses from this past winter. Of course, I was on board with this and gladly caged it to the starting location. Now before you get too upset with me I just had total knee (left) replacement surgery and riding the bike was out of the question at the time.
SMOKINʼ H-D DEMO DAYS April 12th - 13th OUTER BANKS BIKE RALLY April 19th – 27th
When I arrived at the starting point, I was greeted with coffee and doughnuts and by a great group of friends from here in Franklin, NC and from Sylva, NC. Notice that I put the food first (lol). It was 36º as the bikes pulled in and some riders were already in their boxers and vests. And we also got some escort help from the local sheriff and the Franklin PD! That was nice to see that they were here to help this group of brave souls ride in the winter air for people who they don’t even know! As I have said many times before, I think that the biking community, no matter if they are with a crew or just someone who enjoys riding, are the most generous and caring people on the planet! I am happy to call myself one of these people. This ride was the first one done here in Franklin, NC and it raised over $500. I can’t wait to see more take place. I would like to thank the people who came out to support this ride and also the Avengers MC and Hell On Wheels MC for helping sponsor this event. I know I see Franklin motorcyclist at all sorts of events in North and South Carolina. We would like to see y’all come here and enjoy our mountains and ride these events that are planned in our area. Just watch for them in the Cruisin’ Calendar in the magazine or online at FullThrottleMagazine.com. His back was broken in the accident. With blessings from the Lord, Steven was able to drag himself to the edge of the road to get help. The surgeons were able to stabilize his back with rods and, eventually Steven’s mobility returned. While in recovery Steven was laid off and medical and household bills started to pile up. Steven and his wife, Ashton, have two small boys named Gavin and Lucas. Through this benefit ride, about 30 riders of The Red Knights were able to raise $827 for Steven and his family.

Grimes Rockets To A 6.190 At 235 mph At NHRA Season Opener
The Ray Price Harley-Davidson drag race team launched the NHRA HarleyDavidson Drag Racing Series with impressive runs at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown (Houston), Texas on March 7 - 9 to start the teams 2014 race year. The Akea / Ray Price drag bike continued to perform just as it did all of the 2013 race season. “The Akea Express ran very strong this weekend. Its like we just picked up from where we left off last year”, remarked Ray Price. Qualifying for the field of nine Top Fuel Harleys took place on Friday under ideal track conditions. Weather conditions were cool and made for producing lots of horsepower. In the first round of qualifying Tommy Grimes twisted the throttle to run a 6.204 at 229.74 MPH to capture the number one qualifying spot. Due to unstable weather moving into the area and the threat of rain out on Sunday, NHRA made the decision to combine qualifying and eliminations on Saturday. This resulted in Top Fuel Harley teams only receiving one other qualifying run before headed into eliminations. During the second session of qualifying the team tuned the bike to take total advantage of the good air, laying down the quickest and fastest run of the event with a 6.190 at 235.23 MPH. The Akea Express launched to the 60 foot mark in an incredible 1.114 seconds and carried the front wheel off-the-earth for almost 1,319 feet! After qualifying the Akea / Ray Price Harley-Davidson race team was confident going into eliminations. With the 1,000 horsepower V-Twin motor tuned for the first round of eliminations Grimes launched hard, but the drag bike shook, then smoked the big rear tire and the engine down as he got out of the throttle. That ended the teams
chances of moving onto the next round. While disappointed with not making it into the next round the team was pleased with the bike’s overall performance and will head back to Raleigh, NC to get it prepared for the next race on their 16 race schedule. “The team did a great job of tuning the bike while Tommy did a great job of riding the bike to better the number that we ran on Friday. Unfortunately the track changed and all top four qualifiers, including us, spun the tire in the first round of eliminations”, says Ray Price. The Akea / Ray Price Racing team looks forward to its next race when it heads to Virginia Motorsports Park for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event April 3 - 5, 2014. The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support for the 2014 race season. Steve Downs 1958-2014 By: Jeanie Hood It is always with great sadness when I write of a fellow biker who has passed from this world. Steve Downs, Bikers For Bikers Foundation State Captain of the Jacksonville, NC Office who passed away in February, was a very extraordinary man. Steve, born in Massachusetts but raised in Vancouver, WA, decided to join the US Army after 2 years of college and a growing family in 1978. After 2 years in the Army he enrolled in EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal). For those of you who don’t know what that is, he disposed of bombs! He spent 3 years in Germany, 2 years in New Mexico, and then back to the East Coast to serve in Kuwait. As an EOD Tech he protected 4 Presidents and their wives, working with Ford, Reagan, Bush Sr., and Clinton, personally. He received the Meritorious Service Medal, 2 Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal Award, Army of

Occupation Medal, National Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon With Numeral 3, Army Service Ribbon, 6 Army Good Conduct Medals, Sharpshooter Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar and Driver Bar, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge and Master Senior Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge. I would say, he had a full jacket of metals /awards which he rarely spoke of. He was quite humble and very honorable. After retiring in 1999 Steve was an AMTRAK Conductor, and then dug test holes until becoming the Police Dispatcher for Homeland Security. He enjoyed digging the holes! I am sure after years of stressful service and serving personally for 4 presidents, digging holes was a welcomed relief. Steve started riding motorcycles as a young boy and got back into riding a lot when he retired in 1999. He joined the Patriot Guard Riders and went to many a soldiers’ farewell. This was something he truly believed in. Steve also joined Bikers For Bikers Foundation and a short time later became a State Captain in NC. Even when battling cancer, and weak, he would ride 2 hours to meetings or spend the weekend helping with the rally. Steve also supported the Cancer Society for a while and later St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It is ironic to say it was cancer that stole his life when, as sick as he was, it never stole his character. Steve is survived by his wife Susi, 2 daughters, 1 son, and 3 grandchildren, which he adored. Through a lifetime full of admirable dedication he was also a very humble and friendly man. One who would give you the shirt off his back, never bragged or boasted, and always found time for children. When he believed in something he did it with all of his heart to the best of his abilities. He lived life to it’s fullest! I know all who met him through Bikers For Bikers Foundation felt blessed to call Steve a friend and were honored to have him as an officer. Many never knew what life this friendly and loving man had led. It hasn’t been often I have met a man so humble or with such character. He is sadly missed by all and fills our memories with his smiles, dedication, loyalty, and respect beyond measurement. Steve was the prime example of “Never judge a book by its cover”. He was an American Hero who rarely spoke of personal accomplishments and loved to ride. May he Rest In Peace and cancer free.

The Americas Guardians Arrive In The Low Country
By: Old Spook On February 16, 2014, I was introduced to The Americas Guardians Motorcycle Club (AGMC) at a North Charleston Community Center located in a residential community. “Moses” the Road Captain for AGMC Chapter SC8C (South Carolina, Chapter 8C), happens to live in that community which offers the group a great venue to meet. I spoke with Vulcan, AGMC SC8C Chapter President, who describes his Motorcycle Club (MC) as one that combines law enforcement, fire services, medical, military, and select civilians into one MC. His particular chapter is the third chapter in South Carolina, which is preceded by Aiken and Spartanburg chapters. SC8C was recently charted this year. I was then introduced to Eagle, the AGMC Senior Representative. Eagle is a local member from Aiken who told me that
the AGMC had chapters across the United States, as well as chapters overseas in England and Scotland, which are called Britains Guardians Motorcycle Club. The AGMC was initiated in Utah on July 4, 2007, and was specifically for law enforcement personnel. It was later voted to open its membership to public safety personnel as well as military veterans. The AGMC requires an in-depth criminal background check to verify that you are an upstanding citizen before you can prospect with the club. The AGMC shows no discrimination against females. Females who have a military or public safety background and own/operate their own motorcycles are considered full members with equal voting rights and the ability to hold any office. The Americas Guardians SC8C Chapter sponsored a “Hurricane Sandy Benefit Ride” with the support of Low Country Harley-Davidson, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Kings Street Grille, and Armored Up Motorcycle Ministry. Senator Scott of South Carolina was present during the event to bless the bikes. 250 bikes braved the cold weather to support the AGMC SC8C sponsored event, which raised over $3,700 for charity. So after landing my new job as a Wal-Mart greeter, a good find for many retirees, I lasted less than a day. About two hours into my first day on the job a very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. I said pleasantly, “Good morning and welcome to Wal-Mart. Nice children you have there. Are they twins?” The ugly woman stopped yelling long enough to say, “Hell no, they ain’t twins. The oldest one’s 9, and the other one’s 7. Why the hell would you think they’re twins? Are you blind, or stupid?” So I replied, “I’m neither blind nor stupid, Ma’am, I just couldn’t believe someone slept with you twice. A New Season
Greetings brothers and sisters! I woke up today to the sunshine coming in my window and a weatherman saying we could reach 70º today! My response to that is praise the Lord! It has been a long hard winter. I have seen too much of these freezing temperatures, firewood, and heavy coats! Who is ready for the spring? One of the first things that happens in spring is we celebrate Easter. We celebrate because Jesus Christ loves us so much that He climbed on that cross and gave His life for the forgiveness of our sin. Then He rose again and he is sitting in heaven at the right hand of the father pleading your case to God Almighty. Now that’s something to rejoice in! Something else happens in spring that is also pretty exciting to most of us. Popcorn and I were down in Daytona Florida recently for bike week. Riding around in the sunshine and the warm breeze on my face got me to thinking about all the bikers and all the good you all do. My sister sent me an image through a social media site one time and it said, “Bikers support more charities than the government ever will”. Now, I didn’t say that to stir up anything but to say that this is so true. The good you all do this time a year with rides every weekend for sick children, fallen soldiers, families who have lost their homes to fire, cancer patients, you name it, when there is a need bikers along with their friends and families are right there to help. I, for one, want to say THANK YOU. These are all things Christ teaches us to do. (I’LL PARA-
63
PHRASE) When you see a brother falling help him up. Do unto others, as you would have them do to you. Help the sick; help the needy, help the widow. I guess to tie this altogether let me say, spring is here. It’s time to get out and ride and do good for others. Easter is here. Rejoice, you have a savior who loves you so much He died for you. If you do not know this Savior, His name is Jesus and He is waiting on you to call on Him today! Welcome the new season and use it to do good for others! Rejoice in the resurrection. Use your salvation to share hope to the hurting. Use this season as a time to renew, revive, and refresh because that brighter day is here! Love and Prayers, Robin St. John HLF

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson Chili Cook Off
By: Caroline The 3rd Annual Chili Cook Off at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson on February 22nd turned out to be the best yet! After a particularly brutally cold winter, the weather could not have been more perfect. This is an important event that is for the benefit of Kids of Childhood Cancer. This organization was created by parents to provide support for families with children going through treatment at Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. Some of the ways that they help is financially, paying for the extra costs that families have to shoulder while their children are battling this disease. Kids of Childhood Cancer have also been able to provide vacations to these families at the Safe Haven Beach Condo at Topsail Island. This year’s event brought a record breaking 26 entries! There were so many varieties that I found it difficult to pick a favorite. There were entries with chicken, beef, and vegetarian, mild to hot and they were all great. The winners this year were: 3rd Place Amber Main, 2nd Place Ann Matthews, and 1st Place Charlie Di Gerolamo. Superior Insurance provided cash prizes of $25, $50, and $100 dollars. A final total of $6,287 was raised this year - Compare that to the first year where there were 10 entries and $900 raised! Marc Jones was also recognized with a plaque for the single largest donation. Marc brought in a container of change like you have on your dresser. Without knowing how much it contained, he donated it all
to the Kids of Childhood Cancer. When it was all counted it came to a whopping $1,702.80! If you would like to know more about this organization and their many fundraising efforts visit www.kidsofchildhoodcancer.org. Also, there will be many more events and fun things to do at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson this year. You can visit them at 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem NC, or check them out on the web at SmokinHarley.com.

Just Hawgs Swap Meet
By Caroline As most of you know James Deal at Just Hawgs has swap meets at his shop in Walkertown at various times throughout the year. When he scheduled this one on March 15, he nailed it by picking one of few days in 2014 that was not filled with cold or icy precipitation. The promise of upper 60º temperatures and sunshine brought a parking lot full of vendors and more importantly - buyers! There was a lot of variety to choose from; new, used parts, riding apparel, and a couple of bikes for sale. This year most of the sellers had made some great sales and trades by noon - and that is what it’s all about! This was the first of more events that the folks at Just Hawgs are planning for you this

Sham-Rockin’ Saturday
By: Grant Is winter over yet? Well, when the hell is it going to be? On Saturday, March 15th, the last weekend of Daytona bike week, Tilley Harley-Davidson held their Sham-Rockin’ Saturday/ Demo days and tent event. Sham-Rockin’ Saturday is a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. They had door prizes, free food, 50-75% off discontinued MotorClothes and Irish music playing throughout the day.
I brought up Daytona because I was planning on leaving on Wednesday and returning on Sunday. Both days it rained, and I mean rained. I would have left and returned in the rain, so I guess it was meant to be to stay home. Saturday at Tilley’s everyone must have known that the weather forecast that lay ahead for Sunday was terrible, so the place was packed. With temps in the high 60’s and pretty sunny, it made for a great day to get out and ride. DJ Fast Freddie was playing some good old tunes while everyone dinned on hot dogs and good Johnnie popcorn and shopped the huge tent outside. All the new 2014 bikes were on hand to take a spin to see how they rode. I took out the new Ultra Limited, with water-cooled heads on this ride. The test route took us through some curves and out on to the highway. Hitting the highway and winding out the 6-speed transmission was just awesome. I was very impressed with the changes for 2014. Everyone who came by and tried out bikes, shopped, ate, and just BS’d the day away had a big Sham-Rockin’ time. Watch for the Tilley’s of Salisbury and Statesville ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. They always have something going on.

Requiem For Major General David Edward Watts
By: Old Spook On February 22, 2014, it was my privilege to attend the funeral of Major General David Edward Watts. He was not only a great warrior who served his country, but also a man to be admired for his conviction to his family, his church, and to the Summerville community. The General was a man for the troops. His skill set reflects that. Combat Infantry Badge (second award), Master Parachutist Badge, The Pathfinder Badge (those that extract POW’s), The Rigger Badge, and The Special Forces tab. Notably, the Special Forces tab made an impression on one of his sons who will retire as the highest ranking Warrant Officer, CW5, attached to Special Forces. Major General Watts leaves behind an indelible footprint of accomplishments and a legacy to be admired by all.

American Legion Post 87 St. Patrick’s Day Party
By: Rose and Lloyd Saturday, March 15th, The Women of the American Legion Post 87 in High Point hosted a St. Patrick’s Day Party. For weeks they all worked hard to sell $50 raffle tickets for a 40” RCA flat screen TV, dinner for two, and a beautiful basket by Kathy’s Candy Kreations. The fun began at 7pm, with great food, and great music by DJ Ron Neely. The food was made and donated by the women of the Auxiliary; there was everything you could want and enough to feed an army. Many thanks to Jeana Ellis, Kathy Roberts Trudo, Stephanie Sparks, Nan Iannone, and Linda Mac for all your hard work and dedication. Special thanks to Belinda Church for selling
raffle tickets. Thanks to Scott Trudo for manning the door, also commander Fred Iannone, and Jim and Sandra. After a good night of fun and fellowship it was time for the drawing. Jerry Smith won the 40” RCA flat Screen TV. There were three gift certificates for dinner for two. Johnny Dolan, Carolyn Kearns, and Tim Gulledge all won one. Timmy Braddock won the beautiful basket by Kathy’s Candy Kreations. It was a great night, for a great cause, continuing to help our military and Vets.

Von Zipper Benefit
By: Jason Motorcycle riders have always been caretakers of their respective communities. They are the first to rally to fill food banks, clothing drives, toy runs, and countless other charities. Especially when it comes to fellow riders that have fallen on hard times. Three years ago a member of the Wingmen Motorcycle Club fell on hard times through a life-changing event to his health. Our Brother Von Zipper had a stroke, which left him with paralysis on his left side. He does not have use of his left hand and struggles to walk with a cane due to the extensive paralysis in his left leg. As a result of his current condition he can no longer ride and is an assisted living facility where his needs can be met. The stroke was caused from complications from a heart surgery over twenty years ago and a heart valve replacement. His love of motorcycles and his club has not left his heart. He has ridden all over the country and was always the first to support causes for brothers or the community. He was a founding member of several of our chapters throughout the years and served with distinction. His contributions to the Wingmen Motorcycle Club and the community have been exceptional over the years. His dream is always to ride again and be on the roads. Based on his condition this will remain a dream for him. After his stroke he struggled with therapy and cognitive issues. The stroke was very debilitating and took an extremely hard toll on him. I am sure many of you know people who have had a stroke and some recover very well. Others do not do as well this is one of those instances where it did not go well and left Zipper demoralized and not in control of his body or daily actions we all take for granted. At times he is the fun loving and charismatic brother we all remembered. At other times, he is sullen and distant from the disappointment of his current health and inability to ride and participate. We spend time with him gathering items to take to him and pass the hat due to very limited finances available to him. After medications, doctors visits, and assisted living he is in the hole monetarily every month. Donations of clothing or any other items would be greatly appreciated as well. He is a proud man and very touched already by what his friends and brothers have done for him. At this time he needs to lean into the community he has always loved and supported. Monetary donations can be made to the Wingmen Motorcycle Club, P.O. Box 263, Pinebluff, NC 28373 c/o Zipper. For more information or to donate items please call 910- 2814892.

By: Kathy Johnson On January 28th, Kyle Waitkus was in a devastating car accident in Gainesville, Georgia and he continues to this day to get extensive treatment He has not been released from the hospital as his injuries were critical and required many surgeries. A lot of us did not know Kyle, but we know his mother Robin Bryan. I, my self, have known her over twenty years. What we know is she is a very kind hearted person that would help out if someone or anyone were in need. We also know she loves her son more then anything as any parent does. Robin has stayed with her son through out his recovery process at the hospital with no financial assistance. On Sunday, February 23rd, her friend, Dee Dee Davis, put on an in house benefit at Crazy Shots in Hillsborough, NC to help Robin with expenses. Dee Dee delivered a great event with BBQ chicken plates, 50/50, music, an auction, anything she could think of. If you liked her shoes she probably would
have sold those that day, too, as she was very passionate about getting as much money raised as she could. She had help from so many friends. Even Bralie’s, a bar across town, donated the cover charge from their band the night before. I should also say she had a lot of help from many of Robin’s friends, too, as one way or another many people had a connection and wanted to help. The bottom line is that Dee Dee worked her tail off and it was a huge success. The total raised that day was $2512 and it was much needed and appreciated. If you missed the event that day and you would like to donate to Kyle, you can go to www.GoFundMe.com and type in Kyle Waitkus. If you would like to get regular up dates on Kyle on Facebook, “like” Please Pray For Kyle Waitkus. Or you can still get up with Dee Dee @ shearlegendssalon@ gmail.com phone 336-504-1805 and she will get it to Robin.
