his issue (#193) marks the beginning of our 17th year publishing The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. That is over 4 MILLION copies distributed! We are very proud of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and the support that you, the advertisers and readers, have shown us over the years. I am taking all of that support as a compliment and a signal that we are doing a good job. Thank you all for making The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine #1 in the Carolinas every month for 16 years! We started this magazine in August of 1998 and WildThing has a little insight into how that happened in an article in this issue called “When You Wish Upon A Star”. Check it out and let us know what you think. Now this August is special in that there are 5 weekends in this month. Not only are there 5 weekends, but also 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, and 5 Sundays, so that gives us a bonus weekend to ride! Check out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar in this issue and online at FullThrottleMagazine. com for all the events and make your choices. When you get there, be sure to tell them that you saw their event listing in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. If you have events that you would like to list, it is a FREE service for charities, benefits, non-profits, clubs, and advertisers. It is never too late to list an event. Go to the website, list your event, and then call us to confirm that we got it. If you see the QR code at the end of this month’s events, you can scan it with your smart phone to see all the events that came in after we went to print. If you would like to purchase a display ad, we always offer our cheapest rate (12-month rate) for charities, benefits, non-profits, and clubs. We even have discounted ad rates for charities that have their own flyer already made up. It is our way of helping make sure that your event is a success. How can you beat that? Call 336-885-5400 for information and assistance. Who loves ya, baby? Live life Full Throttle!

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Bike Night At NewBridge Bank Park By: Mark Infield On Thursday, June 26th, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, Harley-Davidson Of Greensboro, and The Greensboro Grasshoppers partnered up for a big bike night at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, NC. It was a beautiful evening that began with about 10 riders leaving out of The Carolinas’ Full throttle Magazine office in Jamestown and riding to the ballpark. When we arrived, Bellemeade Street was already blocked off for motorcycle parking and the bikes began to flow in. The first order of business was to ride our motorcycles around the field. We have done this several times, but the thrill never goes away. Then, Lincoln, our graphic artist, got to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. How cool is that? We all parked back on Bellemeade Street and went inside the park to enjoy watching the Grasshoppers play the Lakewood Blueclaws, pulling out the 8-6 win with a 4 run 6th inning. It is always good when the home team wins! It was also “Thirsty Thursday” and all beer, soda, and water was $1! I promise you that was a great hit and added to the evening’ fun.
As the innings wore on, the crowd dwindled and another fun outing with our motorcycle friends wound down. It doesn’t get any better than beer, baseball, and motorcycles on a summer evening. It was great to see everyone in a little different setting. I hope that we will do this again next year and I invite you to join us. Until then, keep on reading The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and be careful out there!

When You Wish Upon A Star
By: WildThing My husband gave me the nickname “WildThing“ back in 1966 when The Troggs made the song popular. We had just met and he wrote it on my timecard at our work and it made the boss mad, but I was tickled! We have been together ever since, and I’m here to tell you it’s the little things that make a life. Back in those days, Mark rode me around town on his Honda 90 Dream, in secret of course. My parents would have killed me if they knew! You could say we are together because of a motorcycle. We stopped riding for many years to raise our family. Then he took a ride on a friend’s 77 Super Glide. Shortly after that he saw a red Harley-Davidson Fat Boy and it started all over again. We went to Daytona Bike week the following spring and camped at Bulow Campground and had a blast. The next spring we went back with the Fat Boy and my brand new black Sportster in tow. We rode all over every day and collected t-shirts, souvenirs, flyers, and magazines. When we arrived back home and were sifting through all the stuff, we came across a copy of Florida Full Throttle Magazine. Since we had lived on the west coast of Florida for seven years back in the 70s, we were familiar with several of the advertisers. They had a calendar of motorcycle events that knocked our socks off! We thought it would be great to have something like this in North Carolina, but who would do it? Then we saw the full-page ad in Full Throttle recruiting people to open their own publication that would be just like the one in Florida. We took the bait, and called the number. When “Gypsy” answered, he said, “We’ve been waiting to hear from you!” Long story short, we made an appointment to meet the Full Throttle owner and find out what it would take to have a NC version. We flew to Florida in June 1998 and were able to stay in Mark’s Dad’s condo on St. Pete Beach. We visited the Florida Full Throttle office and met the owners, and their lead salesman, “Gypsy”. Capt’n Jack from Key West was there, too, and together they showed us how they sell ads and put together the magazine. They assured us all we had to do was sell a few ads, write a few stories, and they would do the rest. That was far from reality, but we didn’t know that at the time! The next day, we rented a motorcycle from one of Gypsy’s clients, and rode around town with him, visited a client, and went to a bike night. We had a nice time, and were intrigued with the idea of the magazine. After a nice dinner, we returned
the motorcycle, bought a bottle of wine, and went back to the condo. We were enjoying the wine and soft summer evening breezes sitting on the ninth floor balcony overlooking the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. We were concerned because we knew nothing about running a magazine. Mark was a selfemployed carpenter doing home repairs and remodeling. I had a part time business keeping books and doing tax returns. How would this work? Could we do it on the side? The initial buyin to use the trademark was $10,000! Could we scrape that together? We had two teens at home and another in college. I held my breath as I saw a huge, beautiful comet streaking across the night sky. It was brilliant! When it finally disappeared, Mark whispered, “Did you see that?” When I answered in the affirmative, he said, “Well, I guess that is our answer.” We agreed that the comet was an omen, a sign to us to go ahead and sign the papers to start our new venture. So, on the masthead on every copy of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine you will see the comet that dots the ‘i’ in Carolinas. That’s our comet, our sign that we’re doing what we are supposed to do. Years ago, the theme song from the Sunday night Disney program went like:
“When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires will come to you“
“If your heart is in your dream, no request is too extreme, when you wish upon a star as dreamers do”
“Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you through, when you wish upon a star your dream comes true”
And so it began. We went home to North Carolina and began gathering material for the “Premiere” issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 16 years ago. Many adventures grew out of the fledgling publication’s launch, but those stories, too numerous to tell here, are for another time. Thank you all for your support over the years. Live life Full Throttle!

He teamed up with HarleyDavidson of Greensboro, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, 99.7 The Fox in Charlotte, and Q104.1 New Country in Greensboro to honor bikers in the Carolinas for their outstanding contributions to their communities. The awards were presented on July 12 at the Summer Bash at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro and the nominees definitely came out to show their support! Five very deserving finalists were honored, each receiving donations to their charities of choice. In addition to the five finalists, Bob Karney recognized ALL of the nominees by donating to each of their charities of choice. When asked how it felt to present the awards this year, Bob said, “This is the 3rd year and I am looking forward to many more. It’s such an honor to be able to acknowledge the hard work and effort these groups of bikers dedicate to giving back to their communities. They devote endless hours to their charities and they do it with such humbleness. We should all take a page from their book.” BULLDOG HERO OF THE YEAR – David Curlee received $1000 to be donated to his charity of choice – Bikers and Friends with Helping Hands. World Honda Chopper Meet
Story and photo by Alan Dockery Living in Western North Carolina, we can take for granted what a cool place we call home. Then on a beautiful summer day, riding with folks from across the country we are reminded why bikers from all over the world come to play in our backyard. The third weekend of June, I joined bikers from 18 states as they converged on Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC, for the World Honda Chopper Meet. The largest known gathering specializing in Honda choppers has mostly folks who ride older single overhead cam 750s of the type made from 1969 to 1978. However, there were several of us with twin cam bikes and some newer Honda choppers, bobbers, and customs there. I saw some of my Harley riding buddies there, too, checking out the old Hondas and talking about the one in the garage that may be back on the road soon. The World Honda Chopper Meet is one of those cool cases where an Internet community gets together in the real world. Most of the folks attending are members of the Internet forum at www.HondaChopper.com. For many it’s a chance to meet and get to know the people behind the screen names on the forum. In 2003, members of the Internet board moved their event to North Carolina to align with the Horse Backstreet Choppers Smoke Out, then held in Salisbury. Some folks stayed at Riders’ Roost and rode to the Smoke Out for the day. When the Smoke Out moved to Rockingham they decided since The Roost is such a cool place they would just have the meet there. “The scenic views, mountain roads, and hospitality of the Riders’ Roost owners is way above the best we could ask for,” said Chuck DV, one of the website administrators. “Dave and Pam are like family and The Roost is the perfect spot to hold the meet. The annual event has about 100 attendees each year. Although not as large as some events, it is the largest gathering of 750cc Hondas in the world. You come to The Roost when us Honda Chopper Mother Lovers are there and you will have a good time. The site is about Honda choppers and the people who love them, but we are just brothers and sisters out to have a good time. So whatever you ride, come hang out on the site and join us for the meet and see what it is all about.” The website administrators, known as the G.O.T.F. (Gang Of The Four, named after the four cylinder engines) sponsor the meet. And they do a good job, too, providing plenty of great food Friday and Saturday night plus Sunday morning breakfast. Saturday we took a group ride to Shu Bob’s for lunch. Some of those guys can really handle their choppers since getting in and out of the Roost can be tricky and our mountain roads a little scary for folks who don’t ride them regularly. That afternoon we enjoyed checking out each other’s bikes and talking with new friends. After a great supper they held an auction of parts and things. You know one man’s junk is the part another needs for his next build. After the auction, the party was in high gear. Some of us
got well juiced at The Roost. I think it was that tasty “spring water” that Rake brought. The World Honda Chopper Meet presents a few awards each year. My new buddy Weeble was glad to pass on the purple Drama Queen sweatshirt that goes to the first to puke. This year’s winner was Jennifer Lankford. Weeble and Landman shared the Longest Distance Riding In award since both were about 700 miles from The Roost. OPEN DAILY @ 12pm Lowrider Tom and Slick hauled in from Iowa and Minnesota 1,200 miles. They didn’t do Best of Meet this year, but my vote would have gone to Slick’s classic 1970’s style chopper with old hot rod flames. If you are inter336-992-3033 ested in old Honda choppers, join the forum and come hang out with us next year. For y’all who belong to Internet forums dedicated to certain motorcycles I suggest a weekend MONDAY’S at Riders’ Roost MEMBERSHIP APPRECIATION as a great way to get to know each 5 Beer Buckets $8 • Free Pool other.

3rd Annual Iron Chariot Ride
By: Debbie Harmon Blue skies, bright sunshine, and happy faces riding 38 motorcycles of every make, model, color, and year, took off at 10 am, from Harley-Davidson of Greensboro on June 14th. This was the 3rd Annual Iron Chariot Ride to benefit Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. The weather could not have been more perfect. The day began with breakfast donated by Starbucks and Krispy Kreme Donuts. The bikes rolled through Greensboro escorted by three Sheriff’s officers and continued through the northeast Greensboro countryside. A short break was enjoyed mid-ride and then we continued into the southern portion of Guilford County ending at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge on Boulevard Street in Greensboro. At Teen Challenge a delicious lunch donated by Jam’s Deli and desert from Chick-FilA, was enjoyed. The students at Teen Challenge enjoyed having the bikers join them for lunch. Mike and Teresa Williams and Noah’s Tribe Biker Group organized the ride. The event raised $1800 to help with the ongoing expenses of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, a residential program for men 18-45 years of age with drug and alcohol addictions. The students are charged $1000 for their seven month stay at Teen Challenge. The cost to Teen Challenge is approximately $18,500 per student. This extra cost is covered through private donations, churches, civic groups, and benefits such as our two golf tournaments, two banquets, two walk-a-thons, and our Annual Iron Chariot Ride. Dr. Bob Harman, Executive Director of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, says, “Without a doubt, the generosity of our community makes a huge difference in the success of our program. Teen Challenge receives no government funding. We depend totally on the gifts of our supporters. YOU can make a
difference in the lives of others.” If you know someone who may need help from Teen Challenge, please call us at 336-292-7795. Our mission is, “To introduce hope and healing to individuals with life-controlling problems through a personal, loving relationship with Jesus Christ so they may live successfully in society.”

2014 BIKE SHOW
AUGUST 16TH • 11AM– 3PM
OVER $500 IN CA$H PRIZES! By: Everette “EZ” Short In case you didn’t know it or didn’t make it so far, on every third Thursday in June, July, and August of the this summer, Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson has resurrected The HarleyDavidson Bike Night Celebration. This year’s event kicked off with a sizzling spectacular that took place on June 19th. There was a whole lot of great food, sandwiches, live music, and cool schwag being served up to a gaggle of riders free of charge thanks to big hearted sponsors. In June, the turnout was awesome with people showing up from everywhere, eager to sport their best steel ponies for “The Peoples Choice Award” given out at the end of the night. Each bike night, riders come out to compete again for a Harley-Davidson prize package worth over $100, with a grand prize give-a-way worth over $500 for the “Best of the Best Show” being held on August 16th. Categories include Sportster, Softail, Touring, Trike, Dyna, and Custom with special prizes for highest mileage, best sound, and most worn out tire! Best of all, it only takes a skinny $5 bill to enter the competition. All points awarded at each show accumulate toward the finale on August 16th for the “Best of the Bikes Competition”. Since this is a people’s choice judging competition, bringing all your friends with you is a real good idea. All proceeds from these shows go directly to Street Reach Ministries in Myrtle Beach, a new directions program that helps the homeless in this area. Each bike can only be entered in two categories and this is a free event to the public. If you made it to either one of the first two events, then be sure to show up at Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson between 11AM and 3PM on August 16th for the Grand Finale with the Best of the Best being judged. 3rd Annual Pop The Clutch Ride
By: Chip Long On Saturday, June 14th, while our nation’s flag and US. Army celebrated a birthday and golfers flocked to Southern Pines for the US Open, another local annual tradition took place in the Sand Hills of North Carolina. At high noon, the 3rd Annual Pop The Clutch Ride rolled out of Dave’s Place in Aberdeen with approximately 60 riders roaring south bound on US 1. A stop at Broad Street Bar and Grill in Southern Pines added still more riders. Then the group made its way to the West End Cemetery in Aberdeen to pay respects to a fallen brother. Meanwhile, back at the Bikers and Friends With Helping Hands clubhouse, venders set to work preparing for the eventual arrival of the riders that numbered around 80 when they made it back. Everything from helmets to smoothies could be purchased on vendor’s row, and music from several different live bands such as Tony Barnes, Un Sung, Positive Friction, Chicken Plant Road, and Ella filled the air until well after dark. Eventually, as often happens in these situations, someone decided to try their luck on the burnout pit and several more folks thought they could do a little better than the last guy much to the pleasure of the crowd that formed up to watch and cheer on their favorite. At the end of the night a lot of great people got together to have a good time and support a worthy cause, which is so often the way of bikers. David Curlee (AKA Curlee) realized this back in 2011 when he was faced with a serious His wife 4624 Bragg Blvd. Fayetteville, NC problem. had fallen ill and Home Of The Gypsy Women there were going to be immense medith cal bills. Throughout the years, Curlee recognized that this was not just a hobby with friends to pass the time, but a worthy gift to the community and he made it a non-profit organization in order to give the most help to the most people. Each year Bikers and Friends With Helping Hands host a benefit ride called Pop The Clutch. This is held to honor the organization’s fallen brothers. All the funds raised go to those families. This year there were approximately 80 bikes present, which had risen from approximately 50 from last year. The group has done things like hosting motorcycle rides as fundraisers for people in need, such as for a funeral or medical fees or even to help out with electrical bills. One year, fans were collected to give to those in the community who didn’t have air conditioning. Bikers and Friends With Helping Hands have raised money to go towards a guide dog to help a young lady and the list goes on and on. The mission of Bikers and Friends With Helping Hands is “to make a positive impact in our community by providing for others when needed and supporting committed volunteers who will work diligently to help others. Bikers and Friends With Helping Hands promote understanding and respect to ensure a positive and thriving community.” The cool thing about Bikers and Friends With Helping Hands is that they don’t forget that there are other organizations that are doing good things, too. When there is a run being held, you can bet that Bikers and Friends With Helping Hands will be there to support it! The money we raise for Pop The Clutch usually goes to the Fallen Brother’s favorite charity. Cameron Boys Home has received a lot of donations from the organization in the past few years thru Danny Puckett, who was Curlee’s first fallen brother. I hope this event becomes an enduring part of the Sand Hills biker tradition. It’s off to a strong start.

Bike Night At The Beach Bar
By: Old Spook On June 19th at 7 pm The Beach Bar kicked off its first bike night. “Old Spook” with the help of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and supporters of the Run To The Twin Towers packed the place. Many of the military and support motorcycle clubs were in attendance. I saw a good number of The Green Knights MMC from Chapter 37 there. American Legion Riders from Post 166 and 179 showed up for the festivities. A pack of Americas Guardians from the Charleston Chapter were present. A number of CMVA folks from various chapters were there. Notably, Joe “Long Shot” Murray, a CVMA guy who runs a site called Machieeenegun Ally where he builds custom long-range precision rifles was there to support The Beach Bar. Joe brought along a lot of his toys for the guys, but the ladies seemed just as fascinated. Other vendors included a rod and tackle shop and a ladies handbag company. Even Badd Kitty brought a couple of gift certificates for the ladies. The contributors of the funds raised for the Run To The Twin Towers were also in attendance. Each was given an 18” x 12” poster taken from photographs of the Vietnam Memorial and Twin Towers Memorial. The contributors included The Beach Bar, Green Knights MMC Chapter 37, Legion Riders Post 179, Legion Riders Post 166, Whaley’s, Fillin Station Diner, UPS Store 2114, Harvest Moon Low Country Grille, John Evans, Greg Lenox, Cycle Gear, and Fuel Zone of Ravenel. Contributions of door prizes and services were Frametastics and Charleston Sign Company. A special thanks was extended to Fred Lisinski, head of the Volunteer Services at the Charleston VA. Joe and Linda, The Beach Bar owners, had raised $450 for the VA and presented Fred with the funds. Fred was also instrumental in screening the recipient of the $1600 that was raised for the Run To The Twin Towers. That recipient, Valarie Pearson, was an army veteran of the War in Iraq. She is donating her kidney to her daughter. This donation will take her through a critical time in her recovery. Ray Sagan, president of the Green Knights MMC presented Valarie with the check. Valarie, in her acceptance remarks, praised the military for their sense of community and their willingness to help bear the load of the injured or fallen. After having been without support from anyone for some time, it was her observation that the VA, soldiers, and support personnel in the Charleston area have treated her like a member of a family. There were 12 entries for the bike show, which was won by Ken Thaw of the Green Knights MMC Chapter 37. His 2014 Harley Street Glide the crowd favorite. The Beach Bar presented Ken with a $25 check. A maroon 2014 Indian won 2nd Place. Low Country Harley-Davidson donated a $20 gift certificate and an H-D Tapestry. The reports from all involved tell me that the food was great, the band was loud and good, and everyone had a great time. The bikers and The Beach Bar look forward to doing this again in the near future. Contact The Beach Bar at 843-212-3100 for more information. Just so you know, The Beach Bar actually has a beach and an outside Tiki style bar. Very cool.

6th Annual Randolph County CBA Car And Bike Show
By: Mark Infield June 21st was one of those days when everyone and their brother held an event of some kind. All the way down East Dixie Drive in Asheboro, pop ups were in almost every parking lot. The 6th Annual Randolph County CBA Car And Bike Show was set up in the parking lot of CarQuest Auto Parts. It was a great location and I felt like I was in the 70s as every yahoo in town nailed it as they went by in both cars and motorcycles. Members of Randolph County CBA had the grill out there and were grilling hot dogs along with cold drinks and chips. One of them brought a pretty big pair of speakers, too, so we had music, too. The entries and attendance was limited, but I am sure Randolph County CBA expected more participation and support. There were 7 motorcycles entered and 2 cars. In the Cars, 1st Place went to Bob Blakeslee for his very sharp 2005 Corvette C6. Rickey Salley took 2nd Place with a nicely restored 1955 Chevy 3100 Pick up truck. There were some good looking bikes entered. Rick Dunlap’s 2010 Black Widow Honda Fury took 1st Place. Doug Beard’s 2007 H-D Street Glide with a WWII paint scheme won 2nd Place and 3rd Place went to Bill Rawnell for entering his red and white 2013 Victory. There were no skanky bikes entered

and I am sure that each owner was equally proud of their entry. I know I would have been. It was a perfect sunny Saturday and shortly after the trophies were awarded, everyone fired ‘em up and hit the street. I ran through a brief shower less than a mile from home, but didn’t get wet enough to complain about. I enjoyed the company of my Randolph County CBA friends and commend them for their efforts. Thanks to CarQuest for the use of their parking lot and rest rooms.

The 15th Annual Smoke Out Goes Wild
By: Everette “EZ” Short If you made it to the 15th Annual Smoke Out Rally on June 27th and 28th at the Rockingham Dragway in NC, then you know what I mean when I tell you WOW What a BLAST! When Greg “Edge” Scheuer and friends first conceived of The Smoke Out Rally, I don’t think they ever expected it to grow this big, but it sure did. The Smoke Out is all about choppers. It is about builders, from professional builders to those bloody-knuckled guys (and ladies) burning the midnight oil in an unheated shed to build a chopper they can call their own. Chops of all makes are featured, American, British, Metric, everything. The event is about riders, cross-town to cross-country in a rainstorm. With all this heavy metal blown chopper competition, you can imagine my surprise when the “Mini Bike” races took center stage to get the record crowds all fired up, with characters dressed in cartoon get ups on the course, showing off their stuff in a go go dance of races featuring several nonlethal bumps and crashes. Our own World Wide Phenomena, Kevin Bean’re, showed up in full Evel Knievel regalia this year to take the honors as the Master of Ceremonies with a little road rash to show for it when he outran his own mini-bike. As usual, everyone was a winner and some won more than others. This year’s festival of madness actually kicked off on the night of Wednesday the 25th at our local Suck, Bang, Blow with a celebrity studded party. By the time Friday afternoon arrived, everyone was revved up building their hooches in the camping area as it filled to the brim this year. Later in the afternoon, Sarah Shook took the stage with some awesome tunes, only to be followed by one of our favorites, Rebel Son, for a fist pumping hoe down of Southern rock and muddy tom foolery that included several mason jars of local spirits and a lot of cheap beer being readily shared long into Saturday morning. Right on schedule, it rained through the night like a monsoon had set down on us, which is normal, but it never even put a dent in all the burnouts at the pit in the campground and the skies cleared the next day, to stay that way for the rest of the show. Of course there was drag strip amateur racing both days and a bike show where Pat Paterson, DJ Jenkins, and Josh Cipra were some of the PRO winners. Meanwhile in an old school throwback, none other than the Legend, Rhett Rotten, circled the Wall Of Death all afternoon like no other crazy man can. Other bands on Saturday included Everyman, Iron Cowgirl Missy and The Local Skank. All throughout Saturday there were classes on welding, pin striping and various cool things to check out and participate in like The Anvil Toss, which the SBB crew took a few treasured medals at!
35
I spent most my time with Bill Barber and the crazy crew from Suck, Bang, Blow, so I got front row seats to some truly insane times under the big tent. Thanks for letting us tag along and we all know it is really the Rosa and Whitney show. Thank God that there were no injuries, no attitudes and everyone came home in one piece. If you didn’t make it, take a look at www.smokeoutrally.com or at www.fullthrottlemagazine.com for a few pictures. See you at Smoke Out 16 next year and be sure to tell them you read about in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.

Angie Smith Wins NHRA New England Nationals
Kandy Magazine Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Angie Smith, King, NC, scored her first-ever National Hot Rod Association event win at the Auto-Plus New England Nationals in Epping, New Hampshire. The June 22nd win was historic as Angie met husband and defending series champion Matt Smith in the final round, marking the first time a husband and wife raced each other in an NHRA professional final. “It’s a dream come true for me to finally win a national event in NHRA competition after seven years of trying,” said Angie. “I can’t thank my MSR team enough and I’m so thankful to have Kandy Magazine sponsor me for these past events. I’m so blessed. I am living proof that you should never give up on your dreams.” Angie had no easy path on her way to the winner’s circle. She qualified in the middle of the pack in the eighth position with a 6.87 elapsed and got a free run in the first round of eliminations when Jim Underdahl withdrew after damaging an

engine in qualifying. From there it got as hard as it could. She faced a three-time champ, Harley-Davidson factory rider Eddie Krawiec and won on a holeshot. Her razor-sharp .003 reaction time allowed her to win with a 6.89 elapsed time to Krawiec’s quicker 6.86. In the semifinals she met Krawiec’s teammate, former champ and current points leader Andrew Hines, and beat him
straight up, 6.90 to 6.92. It was the tenth semifinal appearance of her career but only the first time she was able to advance to the final round. In the final, husband Matt got a huge lead off the line but faced engine trouble and shut the bike down. Angie took the win, running a consistent 6.90 elapsed time. “When it’s your day, it’s your day,” she said after beating riders with a total of eight NHRA championships between them. “I’m really tired of dusting all of Matt’s Wallys [NHRA event trophy]. I at least want to dust one of mine at the house. Now I have one, and I’m good with that.” “Angie earned this one fair and square,” added Matt Smith. “She took out both Harleys to meet me in the final. We decided before the race that we would race for the win. She had a terrible light and I had her beat until my motor went away. Instead of blowing up my engine I pulled the clutch in. We have three races in a row and we won’t be going to back to the shop to fix any broken motors.” “Anytime you can say you beat Eddie Krawiec, Andrew Hines and Matt Smith in the same day you have done your job,” he added. With her win, Angie becomes the fourth female to win an NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle event (the others being Angelle Sampey, Karen Stoffer and Peggy Llewellyn) and the 14th woman to win in any pro class in NHRA competition. She also made a big gain in the points chase, making the top 10 – currently sitting in the eighth position – for the first time this year. Angie and MSR would like to thank Kandy Magazine, BarkAid, S&S Cycles, Mark & Marshall Stockseth, Kenny Koretsky & NitroFish, Red Line Oil, Vanson Leathers, Mac Tools, PJ1, World Wide Bearings, IDG, Affliction, FireCore, GoodFab, CP Pistons, & Haltech. BFBF Annual Spring Music Fest Rally
By: Jeanie Hood-Carter For four years Bikers For Bikers Foundation has held a spring Music Festival Rally. The annual event is to raise funds for the nonprofit charity to assist injured or sick bikers. Each year the event has grown in many ways and this year was no different. The vendors were top shelf, to say the least, offering everything from custom jewelry and tie-dye to custom paint from Southern Air-Brushing to KC’s Biker Barn with a wide variety of biker accessories. There were custom lights, clothing, silver, patch sewing, PCVC foods, and more. Everything a bigger bike rally would offer but in a beautiful country setting right in the center of NC. If you haven’t been to this festival/rally, you are missing one of the most amazing shows in North Carolina. Friday night opened with the well-known Idlewild South, the best Allman Brother’s tribute band around. Bubba Joe and The Bruisers, a funky and wildly entertaining show, followed their 2-hour show. The evening closed with a new band to the event, Gypsy Sun, the best Hendrix tribute band I have ever seen! The lights and smoke filled stage really set the shows off. Saturday started with a dedication to State Captain, Steve Downs, from Jacksonville who lost his battle to cancer earlier in the year. The PGR stood flag line while Ron “Bullet” Underwood, VP, read the article from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine about Steve’s incredible life. Steve’s family came from as far as Florida for the event. It was very touching and honorable, just like him. The opening show Saturday was a live jam session. A number of musicians from a variety of bands participated and wowed the crowd with natural acoustic sounds. It’s always a great show when folks get together, play, and lay out some real entertainment. The jam session was followed by Blue Heron, a duo, with their versions of a nice variety of rock. Jym Chapman and The Migrant Workers out of Charlotte and part of the rally each year, with a reunion for the members played original music, and a softer version of rock enjoyed by all. Between bands a 5’x8’ enclosed trailer was raffled off and won by “E” of Cherry Blossom Tattoos. A signed print of the famous “Sweet Cocaine” painting of Sonny Barger, with Certificate of Authentication had been donated by Mr. Barger in
support of what BFBF does and was the high auction item of the evening. There were many items like leather coats, purses, bags, tees, bike wax, facemasks, jewelry, food from PCVC, and more raffled off. Another new band, Backwoods Hellbellies (also known as The Coalition of Hate), was up next. These guys dropped a few jaws with their show. They went from southern rock to western then to heavy metal and did it all extremely well! By now its dark and the lights and smoke are filling the stage again for a new band, Driving Blind. Driving Blind blew the crowd away with their rock and a male and female vocalists! By now folks are stoked and the vendors are setting in front of the stage. The last show of the evening was Wide Eyed Mischief from the little town of Lillington. The female vocalist not only sings, but dances on stage and plays the flute! This is the most entertaining event in the Carolinas. The shows are second to none, including any big name bands or entertainers! Of course, there was a bit of partying going on as well. Sunday offered breakfast, and a great Sunday service with Highway, which many enjoyed. All in all, the event is fun, entertaining beyond imagination, and has tons of great vendors. Unfortunately, attendance is lacking and folks don’t know what they are missing. It was a concert in the woods with motorcycles! BFBF thanks their sponsors, Jason E. Taylor - The Litigator, Freedom Biker Church/Fayetteville, Painted Hwy Motorcycle Ministries, Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival, Lost Memories, Barry’s Performance Auto, Diffin’s Cycle and Salvage, Rambo’s Cycle House, Blue Damsel Promotions and Vending, J & J’s Bar and Grill, Hot Hog Leathers, and Chuck /PGR.

Summer Bash 2014
By: Mark Infield This event, held in the motorcycle park adjacent to HarleyDavidson of Greensboro, has almost become a tradition in the Triad. It began as “Hot Harley Night” at the dealership and then moved to the Motorcycle Park after it was acquired, hosting the H-D of Greensboro Spokes Model Search. The Motorcycle Park added such a nice dimension to the event with a real stage that has adequate electrical service, two huge oak trees that provide lots of shade, plenty of green grass, seating on the lawn and in Chunk’s Hawg Haven serving up ice cold beverages, making it, perhaps, the nicest biker party venue in existence. No foolin! You can even smoke there if you want to! Even in the bar! The day started out with music from Where’s Eddie. Several vendors were set up and the Triad Bad Lasses and Triad HOG Chapter were grilling dogs and burgers to fill the void in your stomach. The Carri Smithey Band followed Where’s Eddie and the crowd began to roll in. It was a good thing that there was over flow bike parking at the dealership and the lot next door since the street was parked full of cars (?) on both sides for as far as you could see. It was a picture perfect summer day with temps in the mid to upper 80s and Jacked Up turned up the heat with their performance of many of our all time rock-n-roll favorites. The Radials rounded out the day’s entertainment as the crowd
began to thin out. It was a great day and we have to thank Mark Wheelihan for his vision for the Motorcycle Park. It sure turned out great! If you haven’t visited Harley-Davidson of Greensboro, the Motorcycle Park, or Chunk’s Hawg Haven, they are located at 538 Farragut Street in Greensboro, NC. Remember, you can visit anytime you are in the area, but watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar and H-D of Greensboro’s ads for event information at the Motorcycle Park.

We got it now, Speakeasy Smokehouse and Taproom located at 316 Brookdale Street (The old McCabe’s Steakhouse) in Kannapolis is now in full swing with bike nights every Thursday, live entertainment most nights, and a great selection of craft beers and domestics. Relocated from downtown Concord to the new location brings more room to entertain and host events. Recently, the Salisbury HOG Chapter made this our Thursday night dinner ride. I don’t think anyone was disappointed in the dinner or service we got. A new outside patio is being built for this fall and cooler weather to sit outside and watch the world go by. Follow them on Facebook and at www.TheSpeakeasyAleHouse.com. Look for their ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and make it a plan to join them for their bike night every Thursday. Smoke Out 15 At The Rock
Story and photo by Alan Dockery The last weekend of June thousands of bikers swarmed North Carolina’s Rockingham Dragway for The Horse Back Street Choppers Smoke Out 15. Yeah folks, they’ve been bringing one of the best Biker parties on the East Coast to the Carolinas for 15 years. There are lots of reasons why so many bikers love the Smoke Out from cool people, the coolest bikes, lots of vendors, and great bands to thundering down the drag strip just for fun. The party officially starts at noon Friday, and quickly there is plenty to see and do for the folks who have already set up camp. Rockingham has lots of camping area and most of the trailers and motorhomes are on one side of the dragstrip and tent campers on the other. Both campgrounds rock all weekend, but I think we party harder on the camping side. Friday afternoon is a good time to slowly cruise the vendors before the crowd gets big and the Smoke Out gets in high gear. Things start happening even before the official welcoming. You can start drag racing your buddies or go to the Monster Craftsman Area for seminars on bike painting, TIG welding, or pinstriping. Soon Rhett Rotten does his first Wall Of Death show and we start asking what are people cheering about over there? As the first band, Sarah Shook and the Devil Music, takes the stage, the Smoke Out energy builds. The only rain we had all weekend was a brief shower right about the time Hammer, Englishman, and Edge brought the crowd to the stage for the official welcome to Smoke Out 15. One of my favorite bands has become a regular on Friday night. I always look forward to seeing Rebel Son and am surprised how many folks from up North know about this local rockabilly band. Rebel Son played for an hour and drew a big crowd to the stage. While they took a break the crowd stayed down front for the Wet T-shirt Contest with Roadside Marty. I commend Marty on running a great Wet T-shirt Contest. Then Rebel Son played for a couple more hours as we sang along to their rowdy honky tonk tunes. After the main gate closed Friday night, the party moved to the campground for a few more hours. There was a jam session in the Prom Tent and Skye Paige playing on the campground stage. Man did a bunch of guys make sure we got plenty of tire
smoke for the Smoke Out. They were lining up for a turn in the burn out pit. Several dudes smoked it until the tire blew. One guy had a tire come apart and whack him in the back a couple times so hard it made the rest of us cringe. I don’t know how many exhaust pipes I saw glowing red hot, with folks lighting cigarettes off of them. Saturday the Smoke Out crowd really swells. You better have a schedule because there is so much going on it’s easy to miss something. Before folks had lunch, the Anvil Toss contest let some men and women show their techniques for chunking a heavy piece of iron. Early in the afternoon there was a Painted Ladies contest. The Horse staff provided the paints and brushes, and we judged folks’ “artwork.” The main stage was often a busy place with a Chili Pepper Eating contest, T-shirt Attire contest and The Horse staff giving away some cool prizes, too. More bike building skill seminars were going on during the day. With all the action on the drag strip and in the vendor area and on stage, you gotta make time to slowly walk the bike show area. These ain’t your usual store-bought customs or bikes with some paint and bolt-on chrome doodads. Bikes in the Smoke Out show are unique rides that always have me wondering, “How did they do that? What’s that made out of? Why did he do that?” You have to make a few passes down the show line to catch it all. And the parking area has lots of cool rides, too, that will give you ideas for your next real custom. Edge, the Smoke Out promoter, is proud of putting on a great bike show. This year they awarded bikes in two classes Pros and Joes. The winners in the Pros Class were: DJ Jenkins, Court House Customs; Josh Cipra, TBC Hot Rods & Bikes, and Pat Patterson, Led Sled. The Joes winners were: Michelle Barinari, Doug Wothke, Wendell Turner, Terry Whitten, Thomas Heavey, Michael Harris, Chris Wade, and Joshua Staggs. I always have a hard time catching the Saturday afternoon bands. But I did get to enjoy a little bit of Local Skank and then the Iron Cowgirl. One thing I have participated in since my first Smoke Out is the minibike races, organized by O’Malleys Speed and Kustom. This is always a popular Smoke Out event with lots of folks entering cool little mini-bikes and dressing up in super hero costumes too. We ran a few heats, had a Powder Puff race for the ladies and even ran a sidecar race. After all these years with a fast bike, Brew Dude finally won the main feature race. As the sun slid to the West there was still plenty to see and do. The Horse Staff took the stage to honor bike show winners

and Stampede and Long Road Riders. Roadside Marty fired up the crowd for another great Wet T-shirt Contest. Then the band Everymen, a dysfunctional family with stories to tell, played for the last couple hours as Smoke Out 15 wound down. Just cause the Smoke Out main gate closed at midnight didn’t mean the party was over. Soon it was time for the after-party, a Biker Prom in the big tent. Most of the vendors, builders and folks who had been working all weekend dressed up and rocked out for a couple more hours. On the other side of the campground Skye Paige and Danny B. Harvey played while folks had a couple more drinks or took their turn in the burn out pit. Smoke Out 15 finally wore out this old guy. “The Smoke Out is just different,” Edge said. “Most events people show up and seem to say, ‘Entertain me.’ We have world-class entertainment, but the Smoke Out crowd brings more. The Smoke Out crowd shows up and says, ‘Look at this.’ Sometimes they say, ‘Watch this sh--,’ and I freaking cringe, but it is always entertaining. It is our event. It represents a unique subculture of builders. The event will be what we make it as a subculture. I think we have a really good DVD that explains a lot, The Road 2 Smoke Out.” Visit www.smokeoutrally.com for info and to get the DVD. The Smoke Out is one of my favorite events of the year. There are so many things that make it so cool. There were all kinds of folks from Florida to Maine to the West Coast there. The strange things you only see at the Smoke Out. I swear I miss photographing more cool bikes and things than I get. Sunday morning I see bikes and all kinds of bikes of all kinds and all states of build from old stockers to true home-built
customs rolling past our camp that I wish I had checked out over the weekend. The young guys who remind me of how I, and many of y’all, got into motorcycling give me hope that the biker culture may survive. They were riding whatever they could afford and customizing with whatever they could find. I hope to make more friends at Smoke Out 16. There were several of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff members at Smoke Out 15. To see more of our photos go to www.FullThrottleMagazine.com.

BFBF Survival Challenge - Lauraley Bennett Benefit
By: Jeannie Hood-Carter Lauraley is a lady biker who was injured when riding with someone who dropped a bike. She suffered a broken leg and some permanent injuries to her leg. With months of therapy and temporarily unable to work, she asked BFBF for some help to get her through the tough times. Sometimes, an injured motorcyclist needs a little help to get them through and that is part of what BFBF is about. With plans to do something a little different, BFBF set up the Survival Challenge and Fund Raiser. Anyone could ride, but competitors would compete for a trophy and prize as the 1st Place 2014 Survival Challenge Biker. Funds made off this year’s event would go to help Lauraley. The day started out hot and with the words ‘Survival Challenge’ many got the idea it would be a gruesome day of running or climbing walls. Not at all what we had in mind! After registration, competitors would have 1 challenge, pull 3 numbers at each stop to add to the score, then return and complete 2 other challenges. Each challenge was worth points. All points were added up at the end to reveal the top Survival Challenger for this year. The competition required a little brawn: First Challenge was to kick start a Panhead in 10 kicks or less. All competitors except 1 completed this challenge for 100 points. The 2nd Challenge required a little skill: Each challenger had to roll or fold a pair of chaps in a way they would stay together on a bike

trip. The chaps used had zippers instead of snaps, so it was a challenge and took some skill. 5 competitors completed this challenge for another 100 points. The 3rd Challenge required some brains: Three questions were asked of all competitors. Each answer was to be written on the Run Tally Sheet and was each was worth 33 points or 100 if all were correct. No one got all 3 questions correct! The 3 questions were: 1. Who was founded first, Indian Motorcycles or Harley-Davidson? 2. What company made the famous “Bullet” bike? 3. From what year to what year did Harley-Davidson manufacture Panheads? The scores were added to the numbers pulled on the run. So the competition also required a little luck. At the end most were laughing and saying it was fun. A few who rode but didn’t compete said they were afraid it would be more physical than they could handle. We all know real bikers are about hard rides, tons of fun, and knowing their bikes, not physical competition! So, the event was planned to expose a biker’s knowledge while having some fun with the luck of the draw. At the end, Ted Hedges took the championship trophy for Top Survivor and $100 Gift Certificate! Tom Diffin took Runner Up and a nice saddlebag type backpack. There were several who gave them a real run for the title, including a lady competitor who was a real sport. Congrats to all for completing the competition and competing. BFBF also offered a plaque for the largest group represented, which was won by Freedom Biker Church of Fayetteville. The things you learn at events like this are: Who steps up to help other bikers in need. It’s not about who does what, who you like or dislike, how much one event made compared to another, or how much one person has done compared to another. It’s about respect for fellow riders when they are in need and who supports them and gets what it’s all about. Thank you to Ted Hedges for providing a kick start Panhead, the volunteers, M & M Leather, Hot Hog Leathers, Lost Memories, Mugshots, J & J’s Bar and Grill, Cycle Gear, Blue Damsel Promotions/Vending, AAA Automotive, Rambo’s Cycle Gear, Cape Fear Harley-Davidson, and Freedom Biker Church of Fayetteville for donations and support. Ride safe and hope to see you at some events!

Run To Twin Towers Memorial
By: Old Spook The Twin Tower Memorial Run began as a desire to visit my roots in N.J. after 9 years in the low country. Pete Johnson, of Legion Riders Post 166 in Goose Creek, was leaving a week before Rolling Thunder to check out D.C. before the big rush of bikes. I asked if he wanted a wingman for the ride to D.C., and he gave the affirmative. That started my wheels to turn. The more I thought about it, the more I thought, why just visit friends and relatives; why not ride to the Vietnam Wall AND the Twin Towers Memorial? Then I got together with a group of military, police, fire, and support motorcyclists at the Beach Bar in Charleston to discuss doing a fundraiser. The focal point of that fundraiser would be to help a family associated with one of our groups that had fought in or supported the war on terror and was in need of help. It was important to all of our groups that the recipient be handed a check directly from us and not through fund raising organizations. The donors involved included not only motorcycle organizations but also patriotic local merchants who donated their services. The groups involved included: The Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club, Legion Riders Post 179, Legion Riders Post 166, UPS Store 2114, Charleston Sign Company, Frametastics, The Fillin Station, Harvest Moon Low Country Grille, The Beach Bar, Whaley’s, Greg Lenox, The Roadrunner, John Evans, Americas Guardians, CVMA Chapter 34-1-2 and Cycle Gear. $1600 was raised through donations and another $1500 in goods and services were offered by these fine people. Our group of bikers decided to do a bike night at the Beach Bar on June 19th to just hang and have some fun following the Ride to the Twin Towers. More about this in my follow-up article. Prior to my departure, I put out feelers to anyone that might want to join me on my trip north. One of the Green Knights, Patrick “Desperado” Esmerado, contacted his dad, Joe Esmerado, a First Lieutenant in the Coast Guard and one of the first responders for 9/11, to see if he would like to join me. Although Lieutenant Esmerado hadn’t been to the memorial since 9/11, he wanted to support his son’s group, the Green Knights and enthusiastically volunteered to take me through his experiences. This was going to be an incredible first-hand view of the memorial. On the 18th of May at The Beach Bar, I met up with members
of the Green Knights MMC Chapter 37 who led me out. We stopped at Cycle Gear and then headed out to KFC in Summerville. Pete was riding his white 2012 Gold Wing Trike with his wife Debbie and I was on my maroon 2011 Victory Vision with a Hannigan Sidecar. We headed out Rt. 52 to 95 and stopped off at Wilson, NC. I wasn’t ready for the rain but had an old golf rain suit to throw on after only a few hours into the trip. I left Pete and Debbie in Wilson, grabbed a quick breakfast and headed out at 0600 hours to avoid any traffic coming into DC. Someone had to be watching out for me since I drove into DC. just as my GPS crapped out. I let my instincts take over and wound around the city until I found a parking space in front of the US Treasury Building. Wouldn’t you know that the Vietnam Memorial was just 200 yards right in front of me! This was my first visit to the Vietnam Memorial since my return from Phu Bai, Vietnam in 1966. I really wasn’t ready for the visit. Walking up to what looked like a slight indentation in the ground turned out to be a towering shiny black wall of stone with 58,209 names staring back at me. As I turned the corner, I asked if SP4 Davis of the ASA was nearby. He was one of the first names mentioned by President Johnson as having been killed in action. He was a member of my outfit. Despite my not having a first name, the guide was familiar with SP4 Davis who had a base in Saigon named after him and the guide pointed it out to me. At that point I couldn’t hold it together and went down one knee. When I got it together, I took the picture of the memorial with the Washington Monument in the background. I left DC around 1200 hours and took I-95 up toward Philly and picked up the North East Extension near Plymouth Meeting Mall, PA. This eventually took me to Easton, PA. I headed toward Washington, NJ and took the scenic back woods in Long Valley and Chester, NJ. It was just about an 11 hours trip from DC. The Victory was cruising along and seemed to like the highway with the exception of passing tractor-trailers on narrow 2 lane roads. I got into my hometown without any bruises and chilled with family and friends for a few days. I headed into Hoboken early in the morning on Saturday, the 31st. Now that’s a scary ride. I’d never do it on 2 wheels. Route 3 heading toward the Lincoln Tunnel is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. Pot holes galore and uneven pavement. I got off at the last exit before the tunnel into Hoboken. That was a surprise.

The views from across the Hudson River from Hoboken’s waterfront were amazing. The old Lackawanna Station where the ferries are located looks like it came out of an early 1900’s photo journal. I parked across from Town Hall and met with Lieutenant Esmerado who led me through the Holland Tunnel to an underground parking site near the Twin Towers. We walked to an unusual fountain that is a small memorial that was designed for the survivors of 9/11. When we turned the corner, you could see the work being done on the new tower that has not yet opened. As we moved toward the memorial through the busy crowds, guys were on the street corners hawking programs of the memorial that both the Lieutenant and I felt was too commercial and out of place. He pushed the fliers away. I didn’t realize he was in the middle of reliving this experience. His picture, in a gas mask, is in a pictorial of the 9/11 tragedy. One of the first photos I took was of the name Dean Phillip Eberling with a flower sticking out of the Phillip. The names are etched through the metal. I saw the Lieutenant turn a lighter shade of white. This was his neighbor who lost his life that day. The Lieutenant had to bring the news to his wife that her husband was one of victims of that day. The Lieutenant works for Zurich Insurance, a building next to the site. It was closed for the weekend but the Joe got us passes to reach the upper floors so I could get a shot of the memorial from above. When we came down to the lobby, Joe pointed to a cash register in a corner store of the Zurich Building near a glass picture window facing the memorial. He said that when he left his duty station, in uniform, to help the victims, he walked into the shop and saw a police officer standing by the register. Joe identified himself as Lieutenant Esmerado of the Coast Guard and the police officer responded with a look of surprise on his face, that he was just setting up communications. Joe recalls walking into one of the buildings and finding a mangled body of a woman that looked surreal. The scene, from all the dust, looked like an old black and white photo, with the exception of the woman’s nicely painted toenails that could be seen next to her ear. There were no body bags, so Joe had to wrap the remains up in a blanket, dripping with blood, and carry it to one of the fire trucks. Her name was Pamela Boyce. When notified of her death, her mother asked what she was wearing. She asked this because that was the last conversation she had with her daughter - what she was going to wear that day. I left the Memorial that day with a much different perspective on what we have, who we are, and how important it remains to protect our freedoms. I had a family get-together the following day and couldn’t really get the previous day out of my head. I left early Monday morning via the ferry in Cape May, NJ and picked up I-95 for a straight shot home. I was 18 hours on the return ride and I’m still not 100% recovered. I hope this ride and this article focuses attention on the war on terror. 9/11 is a major crossroads in our history. Just remember, that every soldier coming home, every policeman, firefighter, or EMT that has served since that day deserves our unending gratitude and respect for what they do. If you don’t take care of the people that take care of you, it will come back and bite you in the ass.

International Bike Show At Smokin’ Harley-Davidson By: Caroline One only has to go to the grocery store to know that food prices are skyrocketing, which means that the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC will have a very busy year. Smokin’ Harley-Davidson wanted to help them by making their International Bike Show an annual event with the proceeds going to Second Harvest. This year’s turnout was great and so were the bike entries. The entry fee of $5 and a non-perishable food item along with raffle items donated by vendors helped Second Harvest to get prepared to provide
food for those in need. There were many great looking bikes, but only one could win for each category. After the votes were counted Smokin’ manager Ray Perry announced the winners: Chopper - Jake Birnstock, Sport Bike - Kevin Baldwin, Cruiser - Sam Miller, Touring - Russell Sietch, Custom - Mike Sereanie, People’s Choice - Dustin Rodgers. Congratulations to all the winners! To see and hear more about events at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson check them out at www.SmokinHarley.com.

Ron Moore Sr. Memorial Ride At The Old Ski Lodge By Scott Wicker On Saturday, June 14th, The Old Ski Lodge in Ossipee, NC held a benefit ride in memory of Ron Moore Sr., long time owner of the Ski Lodge. All those in attendance followed someone on a Moped that led the ride for the first 10 miles before fear set in and they pulled off. Everyone made the benefit ride up to Chunk’s, then on to Karondas in Greensboro. After leaving Karaondas, the group headed up Hwy 87 North to the Old Ski Lodge’s sister bar, Crossroads Tavern. There they were to treated to some great food and cold beverages before making there way back to the Old Ski Lodge. Back at the Ski Lodge the crew served up some delicious BBQ. When all was said and done, a generous donation was made to the Wounded Warrior Project and Hospice of Alamance/Caswell Counties. Lauren and her staff would like to thank all those that par-

bartender cured me for $10. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup truck.” “Is that so?” With a bit of an attitude he said, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?” “He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Ain’t nobody under there now!” Forget the shrinks. Have a drink and talk to a bartender!
A woman went to a K-Mart service counter and told the clerk she wanted a refund for the toaster she bought because it won’t work. The clerk told her that he couldn’t give her a refund because she bought it on special. Suddenly, the woman threw her arms up in the air and started screaming, “pinch my nipples, pinch my nipples, pinch my nipples!” The befuddled clerk ran away to get the store manager in front of a growing crowd of customers. The manager goes to the woman and asks, “Ma’am what’s wrong?” She explained the problem with the toaster, and he told her that he couldn’t give her a refund because she bought it on special. Once again, the woman throws her arms up in the air and screamed, “Pinch my nipples, pinch my nipples, pinch my nipples!” And doing so draws an even bigger crowd! In shock, the store manager pleads, “Ma’am, why are you saying that?” In a huff, the woman says, “Because, I like to have my nipples pinched when I’m being screwed!” The crowd broke into applause and her money was quickly refunded.

Was it Tina Minetti?” “I cannot say.” “Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?” “I’ll never tell.” “Was it Nina Capelli?” “I’m sorry, but I cannot name her.” “Was it Cathy Piriano?” “My lips are sealed.” “Was it Rosa DiAngelo, then?” “Please, Father! I cannot tell you.” The priest sighs in frustration. “You’re very tight lipped, and I admire that. But you’ve sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself.” Joey walks back to his pew, and his friend Franco slides over and whispers, “What’d you get?” “Four months vacation and five good leads!” A man spoke frantically into the phone: “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart,” “Is this her first child?” the doctor asked. “No,” the man shouted, “This is her husband!”
Ever since I was a child, I’ve always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him: “I’ve got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there’s somebody under it I’m scared and I think I’m going crazy”. “Just put yourself in my hands for one year”, said the shrink. “Come in and talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears”. “How much do you charge?” “Eighty dollars per visit”, replied the doctor. “I’ll sleep on it”, I said. Six months later the doctor met me on the street. “Why didn’t you come to see me about those fears you were having?” he asked. “Well, eighty bucks a visit, three times a week for a year, is $12,480. A
Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn’t control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words: ‘Give me all your money or I’ll shoot,’ the man shouted, “that’s not what I said!”
A man in Georgia had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it. Then he got back in the car to wait. A passerby studied the scene as he drove by and was so curious he turned around and went back. He asked the fellow what the problem was. The man replied, “I have a flat tire.” The passerby asked, “But what’s with the flowers?” The man responded, “When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back! I never did understand it either.
Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get their brand new 22-foot boat, going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver no matter how much power they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer!
The owner of a golf course in North Carolina was confused about paying an invoice, so he decided to ask his secretary for some mathematical help. He called her into his office and said, “You graduated from the University of North Carolina and I need some help. If I were to give you $20,000, minus 14%, how much would you take off?” The secretary thought a moment, and then replied, “Everything but my earrings.” A man was sitting on a lawn sunning and reading, when he was startled by a fairly late model car crashing through a hedge and coming to rest on his lawn. He helped the elderly driver out and sat her on a lawn chair. “My goodness” he exclaimed, “you are quite old to be driving!” “Yes” she replied,” I am old enough that I don’t need a license anymore. The last time I went to my doctor he examined me, and asked if I had a driver’s license. I told him yes and handed it to him He took scissors out of a drawer, cut the license into pieces and threw them in the wastebasket.” ”You won’t be needing this anymore,” he said. “So I thanked him and left.”

What Do You Value? After returning from a much-needed vacation of “sand therapy” with children and grandchildren, I started thinking about value. We were on an island off the NC coast where we had a lot of time to fish and crab with our family. I saw big beautiful boats go by while fishing from the pier and thought, “Wow! That sure would be nice to have one of those to fish from.” I saw these amazing ocean front homes and thought that would be so awesome to wake up to everyday. Those are material things that we place value on and derive financial status from those “things” in life. Then I notice the children, and grandchildren, the smiles on their faces after catching a fish, or the loud pitter-patter of tiny feet as a 2 year old runs through the house. I hear the laughter as the waves splash on us in the ocean. I get a phone call from two of our daughters who are on a cross-country road trip, and hearing their voices I’m reminded, these are the things I value. These are the priceless things that money can’t buy me. What do you value? Your house? Your Harley? Your family? At the end of this day, ask yourself what is most important. It’s OK to value things and people. God does bless us. It’s good to take care of family and things you work hard for, but in doing so don’t get so busy placing value on things and neglect your soul! The Bible says, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?” You can be a person with more financial value and “things” than anyone on earth and
still die and go to hell because you gained the world and lost your soul. Pray the biker’s prayer on this page, mean it in your heart, and speak it out loud. Ask Jesus to come into your heart today! Value His gift of eternal life for free! Love and prayers, Robin StJohn

Keith “Bizkit” Miller
On June 22, 2014, we lost our brother to a tragic motorcycle accident. The only thing he ever wanted was to have the wind in his face and his brothers at his side. It’s a feeling only a biker can understand! Bizkit was a son, father, grandfather, brother, and a friend to the very end. He loved life, his family, his brothers, and his friends. Being a biker to Bizkit meant being committed to a lifestyle that he loved very much, and it showed. From the first minute until the last second, Bizkit was the same, he was our brother. The good times and memories will last forever. Ride Free. Rest in Peace Brother. We will see you on the other side. Tic, Randy T., David H., Tyler, David B. and Bbuck The Vance County RED DEVILS

Christmas In July Ride By: “Old Spook” American Legion Post 166 held its annual event in the low country for the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center veterans on July 13th. Each year the post has organized this ride to support the veterans with socks, underwear, toiletries, and other necessities that they might need. Everyone on the ride brought a wrapped gift that is dropped off in large containers at the entrance to the VA. It seems that this event draws a big crowd every year. The Charleston and North Charleston Sheriff’s Department escort the bikers from Goose Creek to the VA in downtown Charleston. I was impressed with the length of the caravan that stretched out for the 90+ bikers that attended the event. Thankfully, the group dodged the rain until all the gifts had been deposited.

Poker Run For Tim Shepherd
Outstanding New Menu Featuring: Story and photo by Alan Dockery Sometimes we have good old-fashioned poker runs put together on short notice to benefit a downed brother. Tim Shepherd is one of those guys who always helps others. I’ve known him just about as long as I’ve been back in North Carolina and always enjoy riding, partying, and shooting with him. Well, recently Tim had a bad motorcycle accident when a truck forced him off the road and left the scene. Tim is loved by lots of bikers in the Hickory, NC area and the second Saturday of July a couple hundred of us got together for a poker run and raised $2,700 for our brother. The poker run ended at Tim’s house, where we have had some great parties and shooting matches over the years. Friends and neighbors from around the area showed up to donate and have a good time. We kept the ride short so we could have more time to hang with friends at Tim’s. Once we were back at the house we got into some bike games, raffles to raise a little more cash, BBQ supper, and enjoyed the Whiskey Throttle band. There are lots of people to thank for making the Tim Shepherd Poker Run a success. Frosty took the lead on making it happen and worked the start of the poker run. Sunshine did much of the legwork and paperwork. The NC Ramblers MC, of which Tim is a member, worked stops and more. Thanks to the places where we stopped on the run; John’s Tavern, Hickory Riding Club, Lucky Lizard and Son of the South. Thanks to the other club members who supported the run; Hickory Street Survivors MC, Windjammers MC and the Hickory Riding Club. Mike and Michelle ran the games. Of course the couple hundred folks who came to Tim’s get a big thanks. And the ones who donated food and fixings, Mark Rader, Nickie at Mountain View Subbys, the C&S Mart and all the other folks who made it a success. Thanks to Whiskey Throttle for donating their time and talents. Tim was so moved by everything he could hardly speak that afternoon but told me later, “After so many years of being discouraged by things I see people do, y’all restored my faith in people. Things like this mean a lot to me. Give my sincere thanks to everyone.” We love you Brother Tim. Get well soon.

Speakeasy Bike Night
By: Kathy Johnson It’s hard to believe Rommel Harley-Davidson has been in Durham for a year already! To let everyone know they had their One Year Anniversary Party on June 21st . It started at 10am and went till 4pm and in those six hours they made sure everyone had a great time. If you were hungry, they solved that problem with some BBQ or anniversary cake. While chowing down you could walk around and check out all the venders in the parking lot. Or you could cool off inside and check out all there new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the show room. I think every bike people rode in on looked extra clean that day but then they had Ladies Of Bar Beauties washing bikes that day. But it wasn’t just about your bike; if your dog needed a bath they had a dog wash too! So with food music vendors a bike wash and peoples choice bike show everyone was busy enjoying one thing or an other. This is an event that will grow every year and Rommel is hear to stay so don’t miss their 2nd Anniversary Party next year! I know I won’t! Keep your eyes on The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for the most complete listing of motorcycle events in the Carolinas.

Grand Opening Party At Crossroads Tavern
By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, July 12th, Crossroads Tavern up on Highway 87 north of Burlington held their Grand Opening Party. Crossroads opened up the first of May just a few miles north of its sister bar, The Old Ski Lodge. Over 250 folks made their way there to enjoy all the festivities and live entertainment by the Mason Lovette Band. It was standing room only in the back yard while the band played and everyone enjoyed each other’s company and their favorite cold beverages. Members of the Back Porch Orchestra, another local band, were asked to sit in and both bands kept all in attendance entertained and dancing well into the

Ray Price Racing Captures Third NHRA Win
Whenever Ray Price Racing brings the 1,000 horsepower Top Fuel Harley Akea Express, the crowds are always in for the ride-of-their-lives. And at the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series event at Bristol Dragway, the team certainly did just that with a win in the finals. With weather and track conditions just right, the Akea/Ray Price sponsored dragbike put down a solid run in round one of qualifying on Friday with a 6.380 ET at 226.81 MPH putting them in the number three spot. In round two Tommy Grimes with a clean pass rode the drag bike to a 6.318 ET at 221.82 MPH to move up to the number two qualifying spot. Then in the final round of qualifying, Ray Price Racing went for the number one qualifying spot, but Grimes lost traction early in the run and backs off the throttle, yet he still managed to hold onto the number two qualifying spot going into Sunday’s eliminations. “With temperatures forecasted to be in the 90’s, the track conditions will be tricky, but the team will tune the Akea Express so it is ready for eliminations”, commented Ray Price at the end of qualifying on Saturday. During first round of eliminations on Sunday, Grimes with a quick reaction time over Mike Pelrine, gave him the starting line advantage and never trailed for the win, running a 6.403 ET at 223.65 MPH. Round two of eliminations Grimes faced Joey Sternotti, and again twisted the throttle for a quicker reaction time, and rode the drag bike straight down the groove through the finish line putting the team into the finals. In the finals, Grimes faced Damian Cownden. Grimes had a slight starting line advantage and carried the front tire until past half-track before setting it down and going through the finish line with a 6.413 ET at 221.45 MPH to capture the teams third win in the NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing series. The two riders gave the fans an exciting, but very close, Page #3

Raise The Flag By: “Old Spook” On June 14th at 4:00pm EDT in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner, members of the Charleston Fire Department, the Green Knights MMC Chapter 37, and patriotic citizens gathered at the Charleston Museum to sing the Star Spangled Banner. This event united the original manuscript with the actual flag displayed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History from June 14th to July 6th. The event at the Charleston Museum was synchronized with the Smithsonian via a simulcast web broadcast received from a cell phone with a hot spot. Isn’t technology wonderful? All present in the Museum’s new open courtyard were treated to a projected image of the event at the Smithsonian and a synchronized singing of the Star Spangled Banner then occurred throughout the country precisely at 4:00pm. The Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club Chapter 37, following registration for the event at Low Country HarleyDavidson, delivered the flag to the Museum where Captain Robert Barrineau and his crew mounted the flag on Charleston Fire Ladder Truck 104 in front of the Museum. The flag being presented to the museum flew over Camp Ramadi, Iraq in 2007 1-3 Brigade Troops Battalion, Fort Stewart, GA. Brigade Command Sergeant Major and his wife gifted the flag to Linda Dennis for her untiring work with military

children. Her organization, A Backpack Journalist, helps kids find their “voice” through writing, photography, film making, and the like. Ms. Kathleen Wilson, a Charleston City councilwoman, and Ms. Dennis both made opening remarks. The flag was ceremoniously brought down from the fire truck and folded for presentation. The flag was presented to Ms. Dennis’s granddaughter who in turn presented the flag to Mr. Grahame Long, Chief Curator of the Charleston Museum. All present retired to the museum courtyard to join in the singing of the Star Spangled Banner in unison with the webcast from the Smithsonian. In light of reports that Somali-American citizens are leaving their homes in Minnesota to fight for ISIS, to establish a Muslim caliphate in Syria and Iraq, we need to instill in our entire population the meaning of the flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. We offer freedom of religion in the United States. “One Nation Under God” does not mean one nation under Allah or any particular deity, but to be righteous and respect the beliefs of others. The State Department sets American foreign policy, not individual citizens. The actions of these Somali’s are a slap in the face to every person who has ever served in the military for this country.
