ast month I used this space to give you an overview of how we got involved in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. While working on the last issue of our 19th year, I was looking at event pictures and a line from “Truckin” by the Grateful Dead popped into my mind: “Lately it occurs to me, What a long strange trip it’s been”. (You sang it, didn’t you?) I was overcome with emotion as I looked at pictures and I flashed back to events of years gone by. Memories of events and people that we have met, some of whom are not with us today, swirled through my brain. It was intoxicating. It forced me to reminisce for quite some time and I came to this conclusion: It has been an honor and a pleasure to be a part of the motorcycle community and its history. In fact, it has been a rare blessing. When we published the first issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine in August of 1998, the only way to get information about local rides and rallies was by flyers and word of mouth. Easyriders magazine was around, but coverage was focused on national events and local events got squat. Little did we know that we were plowing new ground and creating a living record of motorcycling in the Carolinas. For the past 19 years, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine has documented the history of the motorcycling community like no other publication that I know of. Month after month the bikers and motorcycle oriented businesses, without whom we could not have survived, have supported our mission to focus on local charities, benefits, non-profits, veterans, clubs, and motorcycle rights events that, otherwise, would get no recognition for their contributions to our lifestyle. Many have come along for the ride, so to speak, and contributed mightily. Our sales representatives, many who have been with us for 5 years or more, some for 10+ years, our office staff, and our advertisers have made The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine possible. I salute you all because we surely cannot take all the credit for our success, but together we can, and will, continue to make it happen. So, as we begin our 20th year, I say, “Thanks for the memory”. Motorcycling is special. I hope that you will choose some events from the Cruisin’ Calendar and get out there and make some memories of your own. Perhaps they will be recorded in an issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. I hope so. My offer from last th month still stands. If you have a copy of Issue #1 from August 1998, send me a picture of you and the magazine and I will send you a Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine tshirt of your choice.

Smoke Out 18 Making Choppers Great Again Story and photo by Alan Dockery Well folks, I survived another great Smoke Out at Rockingham Dragway on the third weekend of June. This is 18 years that North Carolina has enjoyed one of the best biker rallies on the East Coast. The Smoke Out, sponsored by The Horse Backstreet Choppers Magazine and presented by Low Brow Customs, kicked off Friday afternoon. I suggest folks make a slow pass through the vendors and exhibitors first thing to see who is there, who you want to come back and talk to more, start thinking about what you need to buy. Get a schedule because there are things going on all over the property. Before the official greeting and the bands take the main stage, you can already hear bikes roaring down the famous Rockingham Drag Strip. Yeah folks, for a few hours at a time the drag strip was open for us to make passes. Old fashioned grudge racing with a

pretty girl to flag the start. The entertainment started Friday afternoon with two stages now. I think Sneaky Tree was the first band up. Then my favorite, Rebel Son, started raising hell on the main stage. They always draw a big crowd with their rowdy honky tonk rockabilly style. Lee, lead singer, says the Smoke Out is their favorite event of the year to play and man did they show it. Between sets, the crowd stayed down front for the Wet T-shirt Contest with Roadside Marty. That man runs the most entertaining wet T-shirt contest. Even if you ain’t into being down front for a good view, it’s fun to watch from the back as Marty narrows the 20 or so women down to the crowd favorite. Rebel Son closed out the evening about midnight and the party moved to the campground. You could walk around and visit with the many thousands of people camping there. Hundreds of folks headed over to the burnout pit to watch guys rev it up for the Smoke Out. That old Honda CB 750 Chopper that caught fire last year was back. Still burnt and melted that bike proved just how tough it is by getting back in the burn out pit for more. If you’re allergic to bike abuse, smoky burn outs and seeing guys light cigarettes off of glowing exhaust pipes, I suggest you avoid the burn out pit. Saturday the Smoke Out shifts into high gear. Lots of bikers arrive for just the day and the vendors are ready for a crowd. There are exhibits and training classes at several of the builders’ displays where they give tips on everything from bending metal to laying on custom paint. And there are contests for you

to participate in. The Anvil Toss lets some men and women show how far they can chuck a heavy piece of iron. Early in the afternoon there was a Painted Ladies contest. The Horse staff provided the paints and brushes, and we judged folks’ “artwork.” That guy who won the Chili Pepper Eating contest had to have an iron stomach! Oh, yeah! There were more bands Saturday playing just about all day. Old Man Noise started us off. Sarah Shook and the Disarmers took us into the dark. While the Koffin Kats had the crowd in a psychobilly frenzy as the Smoke Out wound down Saturday night. I believe I saw D.B. Bryant on the campground stage late that evening. And there were more cool folks to entertain us. Freak Show Deluxe performed a few times. I saw them on the main stage and then for an up-close show at the Mini Bike Races. They will make you cringe and laugh. The Cherry Bombs are a rock music performance group that looked hot while dancing and doing cool aerial and fire stunts. I missed the motorcycle stunt shows but could hear and see the smoke from them. Occasionally, a military aircraft would fly over low and slow. I’ve told y’all for years that The Ride In Bike Show is always the best of the year. Trophies were presented for the best of the Pros and Joes. The Mini Bike Races are a blast. I was back with a new motor in Old Blue, my WalMartian costume and weak brakes. It’s a hoot to see bikers racing cool little mini bikes and dressing up in super hero costumes. They ran a sidecar race and drift trikes, too. Drift trikes are powered big wheel type machines that look like the back half of a go-cart with a bicycle front end. Too much fun. Y’all need to bring something to race next year. After supper, The Horse Staff took the stage to honor bike show winners and others. Roadside Marty fired up the crowd for another great Wet T-shirt Contest. The Koffin Kats closed out the evening as the Smoke Out wound down. Saturday

19 night the party and burnouts went on for a few more hours in the campgrounds. I tell folks the Smoke Out ain’t quite the same as most bike rallies. Not a lot of the same expensive new bikes you see at most places, but real customs, built by bikers and small shops. Old ratty bikes that look like what I rode when I was young and built whatever I could afford are the norm. The crowd comes from all over the country, all ages, and all kinds of people. We are the Smoke Out Family and this is

our reunion. “This event is different because of the people who attend,” said Edge the promoter. “They don’t show up and say, ‘Entertain me,’ they show up and say, ‘Look at this... or watch this sh#! My son was watching the new Mad Max movie the other day and it took me a while to realize it wasn’t footage from the Smoke Out campground!” Late Saturday afternoon, I found Edge at the info booth

actually sitting and relaxing, talking to Glen Marsh from Redondo Beach, California. He has been to all the West Coast Smoke Outs and four of the East Coast events and was telling Edge how much he appreciates the effort it takes to put on an event like this. “I come to North Carolina because this is a family and you feel welcome,” Glen said. “They put on an amazing event, with great talent, wonderful staff, beautiful bikes, gorgeous eye candy walking around. It’s hard to beat this event.” Folks come to the Smoke Out from all over and some of them come together. One of those groups is known as the Long Road Riders. Every year volunteers organize a ride from several states away to end at the Smoke Out. They plan campgrounds and motels along the route. This year they stayed at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort the night before going to Rockingham. I talked to a couple of them from North Carolina who, for years, have ridden to the start and then back with the group. Lorren Bryant of Chapel Hill, and Pat Witherspoon from Burlington, have made the Long Road Ride together for five years. “We started the Sunday before the Smoke Out in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, with 56 people. Forty were first-time Long Road riders and there were five women riding. Most of us camped on the ride,” Pat said. “There are guys who ride from across the country to North Carolina and then head to the Long Road start.” “This is the ninth year for the ride,” Lorren said. “Volunteers put on the ride. That’s how the Smoke Out works. Family and comradery. Each day’s ride is 300 miles or less between campgrounds. Everybody can take their own trip and pace since it’s a gypsy ride.” Next year will be the nineteenth Smoke Out. I really want to see a whole bunch of y’all there as we build to Smoke Out 20. If you ain’t been in a while, come on back. If you have always wanted to go, be there next year so you have an idea what to expect in 2019. Clyde’s dad co-signed a loan and Clyde’s first Sportster was bought. There have been quite a few bikes since then; Hondas, Harleys, Ducatis, Triumphs, BSAs, and a Norton. Harley-Davidsons’ stuck and have become Clyde’s passion. After trying several different careers, Clyde became an employee at the local Harley-Davidson shop, working the parts counter again. Finally, a position opened up in finance and sales at the Harley shop. Clyde had found his calling. Helping people get into the Harley-Davidson / biker lifestyle was rewarding, since Clyde was just sharing his passion. Twenty years later, Clyde has opened himself up to a new position as sales manager at STE Powersports. ficers from the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department were there to lead and protect the bikers. A special thanks to these officers for being available for the ride. Some say that it’s not as much fun with escorts. If you were with these guys, you would need to keep up. They were not too fast, but not slow either. The riders left out at noon. It was still cloudy and threatened rain. No one backed out and all hit the road and out onto the interstate. One fellow was late and came down the road after the ride left. I held up so he would have a chance to catch up with the group. He rode hard to catch up, but eventually made it to the backside of the ride group. The ride took a huge loop around Guilford County, passing some of the local city lakes in the Greensboro area. At the midpoint of the ride, everyone pulled up for a short rest before continuing. The ride was around 2.5 hours all within the Guilford County borders with only a brief shower along the way. What a concept for a local ride, enjoying the county while remaining in close proximity to the start point. All arrived back at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro safely, and without anyone being overly tired. Hot dogs and drinks were available inside, so bikers wandered in and out, eating and talking. Immediately after eating, there were some prizes handed out to the riders who had winning tickets. There were some $50 gift cards for Harley gear, folding seats, and several other prizes. Afterward, riders began to drift. Some went home, some went to ride more, and some went next door to JJ’s Watering Hole, but everyone left satisfied with the day and with being with other bikers. Good job Harley-Davidson of Greensboro!

Thunder In The Smokies – Summer Rally By Buzz: I love riding in the mountains. The curves, the little towns, and mountain scenery make up my favorite destinations. When I saw that, after 18 years of solid spring and fall rallies, Handlebar Corral Productions was putting on a Summer edition of Thunder In The Smokies, I knew that I wanted to be there. The weather forecast wasn’t the best, but I wasn’t going to let that keep me from having a good time! I packed up my bike with magazines and clean socks and hit the road for Maggie Valley, NC. I stayed dry for 150 of the 195-mile ride from Thomasville, NC to Maggie Valley, NC. The 45 miles of “rain” wasn’t enough “The sky had cleared to get me wet above the over the valley and it knees. It had been a few years since I had been to the museum and it was more impressive than ever! If you like old motorcycles and motorcycle paraphernalia, you have to go to Wheels Through Time Museum.

WTT is not your ordinary motorcycle museum, the bikes are not roped off and far away, you can get up close and personal with some of the rarest and well preserved bikes in the US! Plus, this is “the museum that runs”, and most of these beauties are in running order and have ornate pans under them to keep them from “marking their territory” on the floor. I could have spent a few more hours at WTT, but, it was 5:30 and the first band was cranking up down the road at Thunder In The Smokies! I received a warm welcome from the ticket gals at the entrance and parked with the already formed row of bikes in the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds. The sky had cleared and the sun was shining as Grand Theft Audio, thanks to the concert sponsor Smoky Mountain Steel Horses, kicked off the rally. The Maggie Valley Festival grounds is a beautiful place to have a rally. The grounds are surrounded by towering mountains and the blue skies (Duh, you’re in the valley!) I made my rounds through the vendors to see what I “needed” on this pleasant evening. There were vendors for leather, food, jewelry, mobile audio, shirts, patches, and anything else you may have “needed”. La Santa Damiana performed some awesome fire dancing at 7pm in between music sets. Let me tell you something, she had the crowd “fired up”! Between her fire dancing, fire breathing, and warm personality, she was well worth watch-

The competition was stiff through the slow race, TP & plunger race, 3-legged race, hopper ball race, and weenie bite. At the end of the games, two teams were tied for the lead and a two up slow race was held to decide the winner! A little drizzling rain started up again and cooled us all down after the games were over. The winners didn’t seem to mind the rain as they collected their prize money! The rain only lasted a few minutes and moved out before Alli Randolph and the Outta Luck Band started up some tunes from the stage. It was a great time to get something to eat and get off my feet for a little bit. While I was away from the rally, Crawford and Power played their set from 7:30-9pm. Continued On Page 30

ing. I was looking forward to 9pm when she would perform in the dark! When Damiana was finished, Jody Medford took the stage and kept the music going. As the evening went on it drizzled a little here and there, but not enough to get you wet. The headliner for Friday night was Rockie Lynne, and he really put on a show! The crowd was sparse, but Rockie played like it was Madison Square Garden! Rockie served in the Army with the 82nd Airborne and devotes his time on stage, along with some of his original songs, thanking veterans and active military. Did I mention he put on a hell of a show? Rockie has chops for days and an all-star band backing him. If you missed this show, don’t miss his next! Saturday Morning was a beautiful morning in Maggie Valley! The temperatures were in the upper 70’s by 10 am and a guided ride was set to leave the Festival Grounds for a short ride up to the parkway. There was a good turnout for the ride and we took off for the parkway. Heading up the mountain, I was glad to have my jacket on as the temps fell as we climbed. I thoroughly enjoyed riding the winding roads up to the parkway, and although the fog had not burned off yet, it was a nice ride. We pulled off the parkway at Waterrock Knob Overlook. It was a beautiful overlook at the elevation of 5820 ft. or at least that’s what I am told! You couldn’t see 10 feet off the side of the mountain! Oh well! It was fun anyway, and the camaraderie of the riders made it even more worthwhile. Part of the group rode on to Mt. Pisgah, but I went back to check out the Bike Show at Thunder In The Smokies! We got back to the Festival Grounds in time for the Bike Show, sponsored by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, the Firm That Rides. It’s a people’s choice bike show that lines up directly in front of the music stage with $1000 cash prize. You get 1 voting ticket when you enter the rally and you drop it in the helmet of the bike you think is Best In Show. For 1 hour, rally goers mulled over the 26 bikes entered in the bike show, trying to pick out their favorite. The votes were counted and a Miller Highlife garage built custom bike took home the top honors and a hand full of cash! It was a cool bike, based on a Sportster, with Miller Highlife themed paint, chrome bottle foot pegs, a bottle cap fashioned seat, and Highlife bottle caps cleverly placed all over the bike. The 2nd and 3rd place bikes were lookers as well, but they just came up a few votes short. We took pictures of the bike show winners in front of McGrath’s vendor booth. I returned to the festival grounds to catch Matt Boswell and the Hillbilly Blues Band. The sky had cleared over the valley and it was a great night to take in a show! I ran into some friends that I had made earlier in the day and we tapped our toes to one heck of a show that Matt was putting on! Matt Boswell and the Hillbilly Blues Band played on until 11pm and closed out the rally. What a great night! The forecast wasn’t the best, and yes, I rode in some rain and got a little wet, but I’m glad I didn’t let the weather keep me from having a great time at Thunder In The Smokies. Chris and Lori of Handlebar Corral Productions put together a great rally with some really great bands, plenty of good vendors, a bike show, and great field games all for $20 per person. What a deal! 4th Annual Meals On Wheels Dice Run By: Wally Wersching On Saturday June 17th, a group of concerned bikers got together for some fun and fellowship to help a worthy cause – the Cherokee County “Meals On Wheels” program in Gaffney, SC. Cherokee County “Meals On Wheels” was founded in May of 1984 to meet a definite need among the elderly and handicapped of Cherokee County. Their purpose is not simply to provide meals but to reach out and touch other areas of the recipients’ lives as needs are noticed. Flowers, gifts, extra food, magazines, fans, toiletry items, and special donated homemade items are often sent to the people in need by the volunteers. When I arrived at the starting point – the Cherokee County Veterans Appreciation Park, I was impressed by the organization of the event. The parking lot was blocked by barriers so

that only motorcycles could enter. There were a few women at the registration table eagerly awaiting the bikers to arrive. It was only 9:30AM. The run was supposed to start at 10:30AM. That’s why there were only a couple bikes parked in the lot. I walked to the table, introduced myself, and gave out a few copies of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle’ Magazine. After talking with the people at the table, I walked around the lot until more bikers arrived. They came, a couple at a time, but they came. The weather looked threatening, but they still came. This was a labor of love for all concerned. One of the bikers I met was a US Marine veteran. He spent ten years as a Marine, and was discharged in 2015 after a few deployments overseas. I helped him find his name on the marble monoliths in the Military Appreciation part of the park. From now on, whenever I visit the park, I’ll go to his name, and remember the young man. As it got closer to 10:30, the parking lot filled with motorcycles, and the riders were busy filling out the release forms for the ride, paying the $25 per bike, and then donating for the 50/50 drawing. Many of the bikers were hugging each other when they met while others were talking about how they were just at the other’s house looking for him. It was a very friendly atmosphere. It was almost time to start when Carolyn and Rodger from the Gaffney Christian Motorcyclists Association – “Warriors For Christ” arrived. They said their meeting went longer than expected. We had a brief conversation. They also blessed a member’s new motorcycle before the run. At 10:30, one of the ladies spoke about the run, and how it would end at the Gaffney Elks Lodge where the participants would receive the door prizes, and food while listening to live entertainment. Then there was a prayer asking God to protect all in the run and their families. At about 10:35 the bikers started to leave. There were bright orange signs along the way so the bikers wouldn’t get lost. This was a well-organized run. I was glad that I went. I made some new friends, and saw some old ones I hadn’t seen for a while. I will definitely go again next year. They have it on the same weekend every year and it’s for a great cause.

World Honda Chopper Meet Story and photo by Alan Dockery It’s so cool that folks come from all over the country to ride in our mountains and enjoy North Carolina’s southern hospitality. The last weekend of June, I joined a bunch of bikers as they converged on Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC, for the World Honda Chopper Meet. This gathering is mostly folks who ride older single overhead cam CB 750s of the type made from 1969 to 1978. Later twin cam bikes and some newer Honda choppers, bobbers and customs were welcome. Some of my Harley riding buddies showed up to get ideas and advice on building the old Honda in their garage. The World Honda Chopper Meet is an internet community getting together in the real world. Most of the folks attending are members of the internet forum at www.HondaChopper.com. It’s a chance to meet and get to know the people behind the screen names on the forum. Fourteen years ago, members of the internet board moved their event to North Carolina to align with the Horse Backstreet Choppers Smoke Out, then held in Salisbury. The website administrators, known as the

By: David Burnette Saturday, July 15th was a beautiful day for a ride. The sun was shining, there was a nice breeze blowing, and just a few clouds in the sky. When my friend Ms. Pat and I got to Denton Farm Park around 10 am there were already about 200 bikes lined up for the ride. I believe the final total of bikes ended up close to 250 and around 425 riders. The ride was about 75 miles thru Randolph and Davidson counties, which was escorted by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department, led by officer Greg Wood. To the best of my knowledge it went off without incident and everyone seemed to have a great time. The ride started and ended at Denton Farm Park and lasted about 2 hours. Upon arriving back at the park, riders were served lunch by Roadway Dawgs out of Thomasville, NC. There was

a 50/50 drawing where the winners cut was about $350. All in all, it was a great day for a great cause. I talked with Deb Knox who along with her team at Hospice of Davidson county planed and put on this event and she was telling that last year they provided care for patients to the tune of about $250,000 and this year is expected to be even more. I spoke with her assistant Allie on Monday and she told me that there was around $22,000 raised thru this event so far and more expected over the next few weeks. Wow! That’s something to be proud of fellow bikers. May God bless you for your generosity. By: Everette “EZ” Short Well it’s come and gone like a cool breeze and The Myrtle Beach Bike Week of Spring 2017 had few accidents, no violent incidents, and zero motorcycle fatalities. With more riders and bystanders than we’ve seen in the last decade, it was amazing to see old and new friends, with bikes thundering across the strand for all two weeks of the extravaganza, without complaint. Of course, Murrells Inlet was choked off with traffic, awesome bands, and rocking chairs, while the rest of the crowd rode, and they rode a lot! It was a lot like it used to be and it was good. Coastal Indian almost had me switching brands with a test ride of the new Indian lineup. If you got in on their rides, then you would know that all their machines were a blast to ride. On the North Myrtle Beach end, the action was full throttle up and down the highway, while 17 Customs

dazzled us with Scott Britt’s brilliant display of customs in the front yard and he still has a few to sell if you didn’t get it right the first time or you just want to go drool over a dream machine. Jay’s in Little River was packed with old school rockers, like Jay Mozeley, where great food, music and legends gathered till early morning’s light. The Swingbridge Saloon was filled with 20 hour a day crowds of Karaoke singing Vikings that spilled into the streets and Harley’s Roadhouse had the raging hordes dancing in Chris Scrudato’s sprawling grassy fields with a big old burning bonfire, games and some of the hottest women around! Boardwalk Billy’s gets the big HOO HAW HAPPY HOUR AWARD for the best scenery overlooking the waterway and a full bucket of steamed crab legs for $7, while pretending to watch over your bike from your perch, throw a game or two of corn hole and look out at all the girls that were swarming the facility. The Harley Store at the Beach was a mass of thundering steel with everyone pulling in and out in a roar after pouring over their giant tents of bikes and our local House Of Blues had a sold out show every single night with some great legends and a back deck of Goat, from Full Throttle Saloon, and friends. The Goat Run did the loop, and the Myrtle Beach HD Main Store had the hoopla of vendors, music, food and fun, but the fun ended at sundown every day, with JC Childer’s famous City Line Saloon catching the crowd with Lisa Waters slinging drinks from morning till the wee hours. Cherokee Cycles - Living the Dream By: Nicole Patterson Suck, squeeze, bang, and blow: four words that have something very dirty in common: a four-stroke internal combustion engine. At the tender age of six, my dad taught me this phrase in reference to the four components of a combustion engine, igniting my learning into the workings of motorcycles and likewise the family motorcycle business. Motorcycles provide life to my family. I have been raised on motorcycles, watched as my parents lived on motorcycles, and lastly witnessed my grandparents find closure through motorcycles. Many of the Saturdays I can remember from growing up, even reaching into recent years, were spent at the shop. I remember riding my bicycle in monotonous circles and ringing my bell in a similar monotonous manner in the warehouse while the mechanics worked. I would eat my lunch next to my dad, sharing his desk and usually most of his French fries. On the way home, as a passenger, I would wrap my arms tightly around my dad or grandpa as I sat on his bike. Each Sunday morning my grandma would watch my sister and me while my parents would go for a ride, usually into the mountains, with a group of fellow biker parents. The summer before my junior year, my dad tested my skills by placing me in charge of a custom bike project modeled after a famous WWII bomber, Miss Behavin’. I helped to design the bike, worked on its conversion into a trike, stained its leather, and finally worked on its project promotion. Miss Behavin’ was the pinnacle of my learning at the shop and showed both my family and me something which my dad already knew: I could function as a part of the family. The impact of motorcycles to my family is twofold. First,

they provide a practical way to make a living, and second, they provide a way to live life. I learned the first aspect of this duo straightforwardly from working my summers at the shop, but I did not firmly grasp the second aspect until recently when my grandma was tragically diagnosed with ALS. As the disease progressed, she slowly lost the ability to communicate, but before total communication was cut off she had a request for my grandfather. She decided she wanted her ashes to be spread in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The choice of location was obvious to my family and friends of my grandma because every year she and my grandpa would camp in the Black Hills during the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally. I decided I wanted to be able to ride my own bike during this event in order to be a member of the group remorse. I learned to ride with my mom and while doing so experienced the second and most important part of the family doctrine: motorcycles provide a way to live life. The best way to live life is to have a method of temporary escape, and riding provides momentary detachment from the world and its problems. I believe my grandma wanted to be remembered as the euphoria which comes from riding. A sensation more emotionally potent and accessible than a memory, meaning by capturing a feeling she crafted the perfect way for the family to reminisce. The same feeling seduced my grandpa into starting the shop, lured my dad away from his corporate job, and provides an outlet for when reality becomes too heavy. My family discovered a secret when they decided to pursue motorcycles and this secret has structured my family, and by extension, me.

We also wish to thank the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department for an excellent safe ride through the county and Sheriff William Schatzman for making a personal appearance at the event. A special thanks to Sergeant CP Sayers for coordinating everything between us and the Sheriff’s Department. We are looking forward to next year’s ride. Bikers Inside The Beltway Brings Hundreds To Washington, DC

Motorcycle Rights Foundation Over 100 motorcyclists made the trek to Washington, DC to connect with elected officials from across the country in support of motorcyclists’ rights. Participants included Members of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, State Motorcycle Rights Organizations (SMROs) and representatives from NCOM, as well as motorcycle clubs from across the country. More than 300 meetings with Members of Congress and their staff took place on May 23. Dozens of motorcycles lined Third Street in front of the US Capitol as rights advocates prepared to discuss issues critical to the 2017 legislative agenda. Among these included supporting the RPM Act, ensuring motorcyclists had a voice within the emerging area of autonomous vehicles, and the reestablished Motorcycle Advisory Council, as well as recommendations concerning the definition of a motorcycle. Notably, participants asked their legislators to support and co-sponsor recently introduced legislative measures citing concerns over the profiling of motorcyclists (H.Res.318 and S.Res.154). Every meeting marked another critical step forward in building and maintaining relationships with congressional offices, and each meeting provided the opportunity to communicate directly with a wide array of lawmakers who are currently considering legislation that would affect the rights of motorcyclists. The event also helped to educate and raise awareness among elected officials about the challenges many motorcyclists face on our nation’s highways. This was demonstrated in an event held in Cannon House Office Building, which allowed Members of Congress and their staff to experience these challenges first hand by using a SMARTrainer which simulates some of the situations riders experience. The SMARTrainer event, sponsored by MRF Awareness & Education, was hosted by Congressman Dave Loebsack of Iowa and was widely-attended. President of the Board of Directors for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Kirk ‘Hardtail’ Willard said, “This mobilization of riders from across our nation delivered crucial messages ensuring our voice is heard in Washington. The Sixth Annual Iron Chariot Ride To Benefit Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge

By Debbie Harman The Sixth Annual Iron Chariot Ride was held June 24th. Bikers gathered at Greensboro Harley-Davidson to ride in support of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, located in Greensboro, NC. Teen Challenge is a faith based program for individuals who are struggling with addiction. There are over 234 centers in the United States and over 1200 worldwide. The Greensboro center is for adult men ages 18 and older. We were blessed with beautiful Carolina blue skies as three Guilford County Sheriff’s Department officers escorted the numerous bikes of all makes and models. The riders enjoyed Starbucks coffee and

Krispy Kreme doughnuts at registration. Kickstands were up at 10 am and then the 100+ miles of riding in the countryside ended at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, located at 1912 Boulevard Street. Lunch at Teen Challenge was provided by Jam’s Deli and dessert provided by Harris Teeter. Holland Family Benefit

By: Wally Wersching During the fundraiser at the Gaston County Shriners Club, I picked up a flyer for a benefit for the Holland family. Glen Holland was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, and has no income to support his wife, Chelsea, and their six children. He’s a sheet rock hanger by trade, and cannot go to work for quite a while yet. The Dixie Drifters Riding Club from Gastonia, NC was hosting a benefit lunch on Sunday June 25th starting at noon. After reading the flyer, I had to attend, and help. They were having food, 50/50 drawing, music, a “He has a vague bike wash, and a bake sale. I followed it all the way into Gastonia, and started looking for the address of the Dixie Drifters clubhouse. I found the right block but missed the clubhouse. I couldn’t read the addresses on the storefronts. I went around the block to try again when I saw all the bikes in a parking lot behind the building. I parked, and walked up to the back of the clubhouse where I met “Ears”, the young man I met the day before. He was talking with his grandmother when I introduced myself. I

brought a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines to be given away. I met “Sleepy”, the club president, when I dropped my donation in the bowl. They all seem very friendly. I walked into the clubhouse where they had a table full of baked goodies, and a bar where many were enjoying their favorite cool drink. There were women caring for a few babies, and many small children running through the house playing. It was a real family atmosphere. I walked outside, and talked with Bull and his wife who were cooking the hotdogs. He was originally from New York. He mentioned that they were going to build Glen a ramp to get into his house with his wheelchair, and a chair for his shower. Glen has trouble walking and standing. The Dixie Drifters seemed very committed to helping Glen until his recovery. He’s not even a club member. I was very surprised to see Glen in his wheelchair at the event. The flyer mentioned that he was in critical condition. That was the case when the benefit was planned. He’s come a long way since then but still has far to go before he can go to work again. I asked Glen what happened. He has a vague memory of the accident – only that it was about 2am when it happened. The bike is still in storage. I’m going to keep an eye out for more Dixie Drifter’s events – it was fun!

treated to a variety of good food, including plenty of country fried steak, and a big helping of karaoke. Owners, Morris and Tammy Pope worked hard to ensure their special guests were well fed and entertained. Even the former manager of Good Times Café, Melissa, returned, just for the occasion, to assist with planning, logistics, and serving guests for the event. Then, it was time to return to the hotel, for a good night’s sleep, before getting down to business the next day at the club’s International meeting. Once business was completed, it was time for more fun! On Saturday night, the Chrome Angelz were back in Angier for their International RC Convention party, which was a good old-fashioned NC pig-pickin’ and hoedown at Ronnie’s Berries Farm. Members had the run of the beautiful farm, and in the middle of their hoedown, they were treated to a heavenly vision, one maybe only Angelz are privileged to see, a stunning double rainbow. Rhoades hopes that members will be talking about this year’s RC Convention for some time to come. Annual meetings are held in difference places across the country. Each year, their final piece of business is to choose a location for the next year’s meeting. For Rhoades, she had started her Steel Cowgirls Chapter only a year before it was chosen to host the 2017 International RC Convention. Next year, riders will travel to Maine. Of course, the Chrome Angelz love to ride! According to Rhoades, if they can ride to support a fellow member through tough times or share the joy of good times, they will make the journey. She went on to tell how members of an Ohio chapter rode all the way to Florida for another member’s wedding, and how people from various parts of the country rode to North Carolina for Rhoades’ own wedding. 13th Annual Ronnie’s Sunday Bash At Tilley Harley-Davidson Of Statesville Story and photo by Alan Dockery A hot and muggy Sunday afternoon means riding is a good way to cool off. It was great to see hundreds of bikers riding into Tilley Harley-Davidson, Statesville, NC, the third Sunday of July for the 13th Annual Ronnie’s Sunday Bash. The Bash was started by long-time Tilley H-D employee Ronnie Carver just to have something for bikers to do on a summer Sunday afternoon. Now, it draws riders from across the Carolinas just to come hang out for a while. I saw folks I’ve known since my first summer back in North Carolina and guys I met earlier this year. Once riders put down their kickstands at the dealership they could get some hot tasty Lancaster’s BBQ and a cold beer or soda for lunch and sit in the shade of the big tent. While eating lunch, you could leave your bike with the Hooters girls to have it washed. I enjoy catching up with old friends and making new ones over lunch. The Frank – N – Stan Band, some good ole Southern Americans, were cranking out classic tunes we could sing along to.

Those are some guys I’ve sat around a campfire or the Riders’ Roost bunkhouse porch with singing along many times as they strum guitars. Outside the ladies from Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers were handing out goody bags. Anna’s Sweet Treats was serving some of their tasty goodies. Carolina Patch and Leather could sell you some new patches and sew them on, “It was a good day to too. They had raffles giving away a HarleyDavidson grill and a cooler. The proceeds from the Sunday Bash go to a fantastic cause, Victory Junction Gang Camp. If you like race bikes there were several to check out. Janette Thornley had her multi-championship winning Nitro Pro Fuel Harley Drag Bike there. Several of Don Tilley’s old race bikes were on display and I took a while to tell folks the history and some stories about them. Robinette Tilley was there to greet old friends and talk for a while. It’s so good to see her out and smiling. She made a special presentation to Ronnie thanking him for his years of dedication to Tilley H-D and the customers. Robinette told everyone how much she and the staff miss him since he retired. Ronnie’s Bike Show gave us some cool machines to check

By: Kickstart & Donut Back in March of 2017, Christy lost her home in a house fire and it was a total loss. So two great people came together and wanted to help out a good friend. Mr. Bobby Jeffcoat and Mrs. Charlene Chauncey are two people who give to the biker community all the time. So, on Saturday, July 15, 2017 the biker community gathered at Skeeters, a new local watering hole on Hwy 6 in Lexington, SC. It was a successful turn out with hundreds of friends, family, and people that just wanted to come out and support this great cause. Registration started at 11am. First bike out was at noon and last bike in was at 5 pm. Stops included Ole Stomping Ground, Ventures, Tommy T’s, House Of Spirits, Chevy’s, and Sheila’s River Bar. We all came back to Skeeters to enjoy the great day that the Good Lord gave us to enjoy the live music with Badcash. Thank you, Terri Sestito Gervais. Bobby Jeffcoat slaved over a hot grill to cook some good ole BBQ with boiled peanuts. The sides were provided by Jeff Diehl of Chickadee’s Diner. We had a 50/50, a raffle and an auction to help raise funds. Lots of donations were also given to Christy on this day. A couple times a year the Peacemakers MC of Kingsport holds a party in the East Tennessee hills, the Boozy Creek Field Meet and Dirt Drags. The meets are held around Mothers’ Day and Fourth of July. I think they had about the best weather in years for the July party. Saturday bands played from early afternoon until late that night. Bike Night At Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken By: Buzz Bike night is the oasis of biker fun that gets us through the week. It’s the encore of the weekend that really tops off your week, and Ted’s Kickin Chicken’s Bike Night roots run deep in the triad area of North Carolina. 65¢ wings, I know your wallet will like that! The bikes started rolling in and the band was cranking up when our wings were delivered to our outside table. Great service, we didn’t miss any action while waiting on dinner! Ted’s wings are big and meaty and the sauce was just right, good heat without burning your mouth up. You can opt for the mild wings if heat isn’t your thing, but I definitely recommend the wings! Schmack Daniels kept the crowd moving while bikes continued to roll in. PGR Mission for William (Bill) Arnold By: Wally Wersching On Monday, June 26th, I received two PGR Mission notifications. One was in Mooresville, NC, and the other in Simpsonville, SC. They were both at the exact same time. Mooresville and Simpsonville are both about an hour from home. I had to decide which one to go to. It’s on the way back, and I hadn’t seen Royce for a few months. I left home heading south toward Greenville at about 11am. The PGR Mission staging was to be at 12:45PM so I’d have enough time to make it. It’s only supposed to take about an hour and fifteen minutes to travel to Simpsonville, SC from Shelby, NC. As I was riding “Miss Vickie” down I85, I looked at the clock, and realized that I was making good time. I decided to

exit at Rte. 101, and visit Royce before the Mission instead of after. I pulled into the Cherokee Cycles lot at just about noon, and walked in to find Royce. He was busy with a customer so I waited. When he was available, we talked. I mentioned that I was going to a funeral in Simpsonville, and his reply was that he was going to one, too. We were both going to honor Bill – he was one of Royce’s friends who just died of a heart attack. Bill was 73 years old when he died. He served as a 2nd Class Boatswain’s Mate on a US Navy ship during the Vietnam War that was stationed in the war zone. Boatswain’s mates train, direct, and supervise personnel in ship’s maintenance duties in all activities relating to marlinspike, deck, boat seamanship, painting, upkeep of ship’s external structure, rigging, deck equipment, and boats. He received many medals and citations for his actions. I asked what was the best way to Simpsonville. I arrived at the Heritage Funeral Home on time for the staging, and subsequent briefing. In the group of more than 20 PGR members were a few friends from other missions. Ron, the PGR member in charge, decided to split the group into two sections. The first would be in the flag line for fifteen minutes, and then the second section would relieve them. I was in the second so I had time to go into the funeral home, and sign the visitor’s log. While I was there, I met four active duty sailors who were the Honor Guard for Bill. All the enlisted sailors were in for over 16 years. I could tell by the number of “Hash Marks” they wore on their sleeves – one for every four years of service. Then it was my section’s turn to be on the flag line. I went to the front door of the funeral home, and held a flag next to the door. Most of the people who came to the service thanked us for being there for Bill. Some were surprised to see us standing there.

Soon, Bill’s family came to the door. Bill’s wife, Pat, thanked us all individually before going into the home. We were honored to be there for Bill and his family. Later the group from Cherokee Cycles came. I almost didn’t recognize them in their suits and ties. They cleaned up pretty good! We were relieved by the other section, and then Ron told us to quietly disperse. We didn’t want to disturb the service. I had no problem being quiet because “Miss Vickie” has her stock exhaust. Most of the others had to go out the back way because of their loud pipes. I made it home in a little over an hour. Cindy and I waited for about an hour before going out to eat a delicious Mexican dinner in Shelby. It was a great way to spend a retirement day – honoring a real war hero with friends.

By: Bill Gallaway This year there were 37 Marines from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina that arrived in the upstate of South Carolina to participate in a week of relaxation and recognition. On Monday, June 19th, hundreds of motorcyclists also arrived in Easley, SC at the Red Owens Recreation Complex where the Marines boarded Jeeps provided by the Upstate Legends Jeep Club. The motorcyclists were escorted with the assistance of local police and the motorcade of Marines to Keowee Key in Salem, SC. Those that rode the route experienced partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the high 80’s with high humidity. The route from Easley traveled through Liberty, Norris, Central, Clemson, and Seneca where they were greeted by thousands of flag-waving Americans who were showing their support for these Marines and all those that

put their lives on the line every day. The day ended with a recognition supper with all the fixings for the cyclists and jeep drivers at the Light House Restaurant on Lake Keowee. This is the eighth year that host families welcomed the Marines into their homes for four days of recreation and relaxation. While they were here they got to play golf, tennis, swim, fish, water ski, jet ski, and go tubing. In between, they visited with their host families and attended some local Veterans recognition events. On Thursday morning, they enjoyed a breakfast out and a trip to Clemson University where they learned about the school’s military heritage as well as a visit to Memorial Stadium, home of college football’s National Champions. Fast Harleys Only Bagger Race Story and photo by Alan Dockery If you love seeing Harley-Davidson Baggers with the front wheel a foot in the air as they take off down the drag strip, then y’all should have been at the Atlanta Dragway for the Fast Harleys Only Bagger Race the middle of July. That was possibly, the biggest bagger race of the year with certainly the baddest bikes in the world. I’ve spent many days at that first class drag strip down in Commerce, Georgia, but this race was different than any I had been to. The Head Man In Charge, Marcell Tillman, brought together racers from a few different worlds to enjoy something they all have in common – quick Harleys. I’m cool with that. Many of us have always been cool with street racing, too, but now the drag strip has lights and timers and is safer. Marcell’s background is street racing, from the streets of Compton to Atlanta. He operates a shop called Fast Harleys Only. This race was one of the rare times the street racers and the professionals have competed together. “One of the missions of FHO is to be the go between for both worlds,” Marcell said. “They both have their own flavor and style. to see how they interact. You got the street racers who don’t have any rules. Then you have the professionals who play by all the rules. So, the street guys have to tighten up to conform to rules and the pros get to get loose.” The race was some street style on the drag strip. It started with Greg Dahl, professional Harley drag racer and championship winning engine builder, doing a simple tech inspection and listing who was there and what classes. There were some Outlaw Street bikes and two ET classes, Street and Pro ET with wheelie bars. Imports were allowed in ET classes. Marcell and his promotion partner,

Kadafe Chaudhry, put up some good money in all the classes. But for many of the racers it was more about bragging rights and bringing that pride back to their neighborhood. These guys had lots of money in those bikes. Some of them were new to Harleys, but had raced their Jap bikes and now are racing their Harleys. I saw a couple guys who still wore their old Suzuki racing leathers. Bikes like those that were racing at Commerce have always been my favorite. Yeah, Top Fuel is cool, but these bikes are more like what we all ride. We can picture with the money and time building our bikes to be quicker. Plus, race classes like this have always been competitive and had a certain rowdiness among the racers that I like. That attitude showed as guys were talking smack and flashing cash before each round. Street racing is about rivalries, too, and Marcell played that angle with an East Coast versus West Coast Shoot Out title among the baggers. East Coast won it two to one. Carolina racers and builders were well represented. I saw Joe Peterson racing hard in both ET classes. Mike Motto had his Outlaw Street machine there. Chicken Man was quick. The Big Injun Racing Team from Asheville made a few passes. There were some Carolina clubs at the strip. Y’all know there are guys from around here who can make lots of horsepower and build great bikes. Some of the racers might be new to Harleys, but they know to go find the guys who have proven themselves on the drag strip to build their bikes. I saw T. R. Reiser, T-Man Performance, racing and

helping other guys. During the awards, Kadafe and Marcell recognized Kendall Johnson as the performance street bike builder of the year. When the day was done, a bike y’all might remember from the AMRA Harley Drags at Rockingham last year was the baddest bagger. Kadafe Chaudhry, Pittsburgh, and his 160-cubic inch machine continued to beat everyone to win the All Race class. Chicken Man from Raleigh was runner up. Rob G’s Camp won the Extreme Bagger class and Fast Black was second. Kadafe also won the Street Bagger class with Bo Prez taking second. “These cats are on a whole ‘nother level,” Marcell said. “They were already there I’m just giving them the exposure they need. And the builders love it. They get the credit. What my race has done is expose the true builders and the not so true builders.” “And we showed the world what we can do. A lot of these guys are former gang members who have made it out of that. They found the love for motorcycling. That gave them a way out of that world. Some of them came from rival gangs. For me to have some of the people that I had all there together was what I pulled off.” I say thanks to Marcell and Kadafe and all the racers who supported the biggest, baddest bagger race. They plan to do more in the future, maybe four or six a year. They can use some sponsors who want to get in on bagger drags. I hope they come to North Carolina and a whole bunch of y’all with quick bikes come out to race.

STE PowerSports and Clutches of Statesville, NC sponsored a benefit poker run for Jeff Dawson and over a hundred bikes were registered Saturday morning. fourth draw. Cool back porch setting and another refreshing cold drink with a view of the lake. The last card was drawn back at Clutches where more ice-cold refreshments and grilled chicken were waiting. The bands were fired up on the stage and everyone was getting down with the Global Menace Band and the Train Track Black Band with a follow up from the Frank-n-Stan Band. The bands played all day and into the late-night hours. The chicken was great and the drinks were cold. Everybody was having a good time. Emcee, Bill Edwards started calling out the door prize numbers and let the winning begin around 1:00. There were door prizes from all sorts of sponsors, gift certificates and gifts from Walmart, Red Robbin, Chili’s, La Pelusa Mexican Restaurant, and a long list of others. Melissa said there were over fifteen hundred dollars worth of restaurant gift certificates alone handed out as door prizes. The forming chapter of CMA from Statesville had set up a tent and were handing out cups of ice cold water and soft drinks to passersby. The CMA was set up to bless bikes and offer literature to those interested. The day ended for me around 8:30 as dark of night settled in and I rode on home. The bands were still playing and the grill was still hot as more chicken was sacrificed to the hunger of the day’s ride. Everyone was pleased with the day’s ride with food, fun and friends coming together to help a brother in need.

I sure am glad I didn’t have to judge this one, there were a lot of really nice bikes! The suspense mounted as Ray, the GM at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson announced the winner. Wayne Pinnix took home top honors and a handful of cash with his blacked out 2016 Harley-Davidson Road Glide. Wayne’s Road Glide is a sweet ride with a custom seat and floorboards among other things, and topped off with hydraulics and a pushbutton center stand! Congrats Wayne! Faith In Action Bros & Bro-ettes, Have you ever thought anything about the homeless or even the older people who have no family? To be honest with you, I never did either until we started going to Daytona and started handing out food. Some people are homeless by choice and some just can’t do any better. Maybe drugs or alcohol have gotten a hold of them. It’s not our place to judge, so never put anyone down or belittle them because we don’t know the situation, or what has happened. Pray for them and treat them the way you want to be treated. Sure, they may stink, but so do some of us and we have running water! Working at the Mission has shown me a lot about how to look at people with a different attitude and outlook. We have regulars that come in each time the doors are open and they have become like family, and when they don’t show up for a while, we become concerned and worry about them, wondering if something has happened. We hadn’t seen one of our regulars in several weeks, so we went looking for him. I remember some of our talks about where he stayed, so Barbara and I went to where we thought he stayed, but we couldn’t find him or anyone that knew anything. We prayed, “Lord, show us the way to where he is”. We went up one street that we had already been on and saw a lady that Barbara had seen come into her work, so we asked

her and she said, “Sure, they come through my side yard and stay in a field behind my house”. Sure enough, they called his name a couple of times and he answered and was alright. He was very thankful that we came looking and checking on him. He just had a job now and didn’t get off in time to come anymore. Do you know of anyone that is homeless or older person or someone that has no family or lives by themselves? Have you checked on them lately? I have always said people treat the bikers just like the homeless because they don’t understand them. James 2:14-26 says: 14) What does it profit, my brethren if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15) If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food. 16) and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled”, but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17) Thus, also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18) But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith without your works and I will show you my faith by my works”. 19) You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and tremble! 20) But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead. 21) Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac

In-Vest USA Poker Run

By: Wally Wersching On July 1st, Spartanburg H-D held a poker run for In-Vest USA which was founded in 1993 when South Carolina businessman Michael Letts first learned that local law enforcement officers were not provided protective vests as a regular part of their personal equipment. Outraged, and determined to correct this situation, Letts formed In-Vest USA, to help officers in South Carolina. In 2003 In-Vest USA went national with the support of an extensive network of grassroots volunteers as well as corporate sponsors. In-Vest USA now helps raise awareness of the issue, and raise funds to distribute free vests and equipment to first responders in communities across America. Their mission has stayed the same – “Protect Those Who Protect Us”. Facts according to FBI statistics: an officer not wearing a body armor vest is 14 times more likely to be killed by a firearm than an officer wearing a vest; 40% of officers do not have a protective vest (almost 400,000); Body armor vests must be replaced every 5 years, and cost around $700 each. The Poker Run started at Spartanburg H-D and ended at the Lake Bowen Country Club where there would be live entertainment by the Justin McCorkle Band, 50/50 drawing, door prizes, and food. The proceeds from the event will provide active shooter vests for officers, and K9 dogs. I left home at about 9:30 heading for the Harley dealership. I arrived a little after 10am. Only a few bikes were in the lot, because the run wasn’t supposed to start until 11am. As I was parking “Miss Vickie”, a young couple parked next

to me. I learned that they were from Spartanburg. We talked for a while, and then I walked into the dealership. I looked up, and saw their collection of classic motorcycles. It’s like their own little museum. They have all kinds of old motorcycles not just Harleys. There are three Indians (including a 1938 Indian Four, and a 1947 Indian Bonneville), a 1955 Vincent, a 1920’s Ner-a-Car, and of course a few old Harleys. Most people don’t even know that they are there because they are focusing on the new bikes and merchandise on the floor. I remember when the dealership was in their old building – an old meat packing building with wooden floors, and the constant smell of “Gunk”. They had their old bikes in a cramped corner of the building. They were difficult to see and enjoy but I knew that they were old and unusual. I walked outside to see a few more bikes in the lot. At the registration table, they were selling t-shirts with the slogan: “Now More Than Ever – I Back the Blue”. The event invited car clubs to participate too. I watched as a couple old British MG sports cars pulled out of the lot. I wanted to get a close picture of them but they were leaving early. Then a US Marine veteran pulled in. His Harley was decorated with many US Marine logos and medals. We talked for a few minutes. Instantly, I knew he was from New Jersey by his accent. We laughed about our different accents – neither being local. As 11:00 approached, the bikes started to leave. I left too, and made it home before noon. Cindy and I went out for a nice lunch. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning.

Carolinas Waterfall Ride By: Bill Gallaway The Star Touring and Riding Chapter from Greenville, SC turned their monthly ride into a waterfall tour. On Saturday, June 3, there were 13 bikes and 17 riders that ventured out. The weather was perfect for a mountain ride. There were several events scheduled around the upstate and it was difficult to make a decision on where to ride. The majority of riders left the Piedmont of SC at 8:30 to begin the ride thru the upstate through Clemson and Walhalla, up past the Wiginton Overlook to a stop near Mountain Rest for a restroom and gas break at Tunnel Town Express. This was the last gas break before moving on to Highlands, NC where the group stopped to view Bridal Veil Falls. This area has changed a bit since the last time I was by there. You could drive under the fall years ago. Not a great idea. Perhaps it is closed because a boulder came down on a car? Anyway, the next waterfall to visit was Dry Falls. All along the way there were photo opportunities. It was nice to ride the area without the smell of smoke in the air as we had last year from the various forest fires. tion which was The Zookeepers Bistro. If you are going to the Cashiers, NC area, check out this great restaurant. The food is excellent and they have great coffee. I’m not even going to mention the deserts. Oops! After lunch, we had more site seeing to do. Traveling toward home we stopped at the Bad Creek Project for another photo shoot and a nice view of Lake Jocassee and another view of a distant falls. There are so many falls on Lake Jocassee I couldn’t determine which waterfall you could see. Some are only reachable by boat. Now, after a short break and a gas stop, it was time to head for home. Some of the group went their own way and the others went to view Wildcat Branch Falls, the last waterfall on the itinerary for the ride. It was a great day riding with friends in the mountains and enjoying life. FMI visit

Gaston County Shrine Club Dice Run

By: Robert Sisk Wally Wershing contributed to this story On Saturday, June 24th, the Gastonia Chapter of the Guardians Of The Children, the “SOB’s” (Shriners On Bikes), and the Gaston County Shrine Club held a dice run to raise funds for their charitable endeavors. With the chance of rain looming that afternoon it was still a great turnout of about 60 riders including several members of the Shriners also riding and running the sweep! Within the 94-mile run starting in Dallas, NC, it led us through Bessemer City, then into SC for one of our stops, and to the outskirts of Charlotte. After leaving Charlotte we were in a race to avoid the rain. With dark clouds on three sides of us, everyone made it back to the Gaston County Shrine Club safe and dry, where Allen Shirlen had the some of the best BBQ prepared for us. Along with the food that the members of the Shriners prepared, there was enough for seconds so everyone got full. Chip Rollins said that the plan is to make this an annual event, so be sure to watch for it in the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar around June of next year!

In Memory Of JC Culpepper By: Kickstart & Donut I just wanted to put a story together about a young man by the name of Jamie Culpepper, or JC, as we all knew him! There is so much you can say about a person, but with JC you can say a ton of awesome stuff about him. I sure have seen and heard a lot about who and what JC was about, and man, “JC also had a thing talk about good for what most guys stories. I wasn’t like and that was his best friend, his father was, nor for fast cars and fast was I the other. motorcycles.” He had one thing in common with me, that’s for sure, and riding motorcycles was it. I met JC a year or two ago on ride I was on and he was introduced to me by another good man, his father, Mr. Tony Culpeper. I found out after his accident that JC served in the Army from 2010-2015 and that he also and went to Afghanistan to fight for our country. JC was born on July 10,1988. JC also went to White Knoll High School and graduated in 2006. Then he moved his career forward by attending Greenville Technical College (class of 2008) and then he move on Midlands Technical College. JC spent a lot of time doing what he loved best and that was helping people learn how to build and fly drones on his YouTube channel, The Blue Falcon Project. JC also had a thing for what most guys like and that was for fast cars and fast motorcycles. He had the best of both worlds, that I can assure you. This is a real hard subject to write about a fallen biker, but I felt the need to put an article in the magazine not only to let the friends know, but also to let the family know, how he touched so many people in so many different ways. There are some things we know about JC and some things we don’t and that’s the way JC wanted it. I didn’t know his favorite food, movie, or color. I can tell you one thing about JC, he loved his friends and family and what he did with his

spare time. I hope a lot of special people get to see this bio about a very special young man that meant the world to a lot of people all over the world. God bless you and may you now rest in peace. You will be greatly missed and on a special note, thanks for ride JC! You know what I mean.

Benefit For The Keith Gilmartin Family By: Wally Wersching On Sunday, July 9th, the Dixie Drifters Riders Club of Gastonia, NC held a benefit for the Keith Gilmartin family. Keith was a lineman for the STS Cable Company in Charlotte, NC. He was found by his coworkers slumped at the wheel of his truck. Keith died a few days afterwards from complications of heat stroke. Keith “The Dixie Drifters was married and Riders Club go had two young “All-Out” for a children. From the deserving charity…” posts on Facebook, Keith, Amber, and the two sons were a perfect family filled with love. The benefit was held at the Dixie Drifters Clubhouse at 1157 W. Franklin Avenue in Gastonia from 12 noon to 6 pm. There were all kinds of fundraiser things going on like a bike wash, 50/50 drawing, food, and door prizes. The Dixie Drifters Riders Club go “All-Out” for a deserving charity, and Keith’s family needed help. When I arrived a little after noon, they were just getting

ready for the main group of people to arrive. I talked with many of the club members, and they all seemed very sincere about helping Keith’s family. I was told that many of Keith’s coworkers would be there later in the day. While I was there, one member moved his motorcycle into the bike wash area to clean off all the bugs and road grime. They said that the women would do the washing. I should have stayed, and watched that to see how good they would clean his bike. I gave them a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines for their participants along with my donation. I was invited to go to Stone Mountain, Georgia with the club later in the month. Regrettably, I had to decline. My stamina is not up to long rides anymore. I’d really like to visit Stone Mountain again. The light show at the end of the day was very inspiring.

Davidson County CBA/ABATE Of NC Turns 18 Years Of Age By: Papa Jim Everhart, President/Legislative Coordinator “Brothers and Sisters! I want to see a sea of hands out there! Brothers and Sisters, the time has come for each and every one of you to decide whether you are going to be the problem or whether you are going to be the solution! (That’s right!) You must choose Brothers, you must choose! It takes five seconds, five seconds of decision, five seconds to realize your purpose here on the planet! It takes five seconds to realize that it’s time to move, it’s time to get down with it! Brothers, it’s time to testify and I want to know, are you ready to testify? Are you ready? The chapter received its charter in July 1999, in Charlotte, NC at a CBA/ ABATE of NC State Meeting, by its first President, James Lovingood. James recently passed away and was unable to see this anniversary.

At the time, I was the Vice President of the Randolph Co CBA/ABATE of NC when this chapter of 12 individuals came together in my backyard around a bonfire to form this chapter. They held their bi-monthly meetings around my bonfires when the weather was good or in my basement poolroom when it wasn’t. When the chapter outgrew the house and the yard they moved it to area restaurants. I joined the chapter in 2000 and became their Legislative Coordinator in 2001, the position I proudly hold today. This year I became President in hopes to keep this chapter alive. You noticed I started this piece out with the opening lyrics of Detroit’s MC-5’s song “Rambling Rose”. This song had a very politically motivated impact on me while attending Cass Technical High School in Detroit. It was a magnet school that brought in kids from all over the city that maintained a “B” average or above. I was in Aerospace Technology, Army JR ROTC (MSgt. /Color Guard/All City Drill Team). This was around the time of the Kent State Massacre. That was a hard row to swallow for a JR ROTC cadet in those days, but I survived. This song helped me survive. It got me politically motivated, which I am still today. It got me exposed to new ideas that I had never considered from my upbringing and my ROTC training, thus I had a new breath of realizations to rely on. I think those days in high school prepared me for my adult life fighting for your rights as motorcyclist. I was once told not to go to opening day in Raleigh, but the backlash from other state ABATE’s across the country was “If you’re not there on opening day, then you’re not doing it right!” CBA/ABATE of NC has had a presence in Raleigh on opening day ever since. “Brothers and sisters, the time has come for each and every one of you to decide whether you are going to be the problem or whether you are going to be the solution” I’ve been associated with ABATE in one form or the other, and MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation) all of my motorcycle riding life since 1974 in Detroit. I first joined ABATE in its infancy out of the back of an Easy Riders magazine, later joining the Michigan ABATE when it formed. But I was part of the problem. I never attended any of the local meetings, eventually dropping my membership because I was too busy

partying and riding with my friends, letting someone else carry the burden of fighting for my rights and freedoms to ride. When I moved to NC in 1977, again I was part of the problem. I was too busy partying and riding with my friends, still letting some else carrying the burden of fighting for my rights and freedoms to ride. In 1994, I was rebuilding my 1941 Knucklehead as my recovery bike and met Buddy Grainger and joined the Randolph County CBA. I held positions there as SGT at Arms, Vice- President, Newsletter Editor, Legislative Coordinator, and – yes even the Santa Claus. Then I knew I was becoming “PART OF THE SOLUTION – NOT THE PROBLEM!” I’ve been a member of the CBA/ABATE and MRF since 1994. When I helped start the Davidson County CBA in my backyard, I knew I was at home with my friends, new friends around the county that I had never known that had existed until they met in my backyard. Some of these friends have now moved on to other parts of the state, to other states, to other parts of their lives like growing a family, simply moved on to who knows what, and some have died off like Wayne Brown and James Lovingood (R.I.P. to both). A small handful of faithful followers (one even comes from as far away as Stanley NC) still meet at the Thomasville Moose Lodge #1868, 114 Thomasville Moose Lodge Road, Thomasville NC 27360, each month on the 3rd Sunday at 5:30 PM.

Most of our members are also Thomasville Moose members as well. We still do this in hopes to keep our legislative efforts alive for ALL MOTORCYCLISTS on a state and national level. We could care less what brand/style of motorcycle you ride or even if you’re able to ride anymore. All we care about is your interest in doing right by motorcyclists in our state. It’s not always about motorcycles. Sometimes it’s about the gasoline you put in your cars, boats, lawn mowers, etc. E-10 hurts older vehicles and motorcycles. According to the American Motorcyclist Association E-15 is ILLEGAL to use in motorcycles and ATV’s and can damage your motor and affect your warranty. Current EPA regulations state E-15 is only approved for use in 2001 and newer passenger vehicles (cars), and light trucks. So, come on out and help us protect your rights. A plane leaves Los Angeles airport under the control of a Jewish captain. His copilot is Chinese. It’s the first time they’ve flown together, and an awkward silence between the two seems to indicate a mutual dislike. Once they reach cruising altitude, the Jewish captain activates the auto-pilot, leans back in his seat, and mutters, “I don’t like Chinese.” “No like Chinese?” asks the copilot, “Why?” “You people bombed Pearl Harbor, that’s why!” “No, no,” the co-pilot protests, “Chinese not bomb Peahl Hahbah! That Japanese, not Chinese.” “Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese... doesn’t matter, you’re all alike!” There’s a few minutes of silence...”I no like Jews either!” the copilot suddenly announces. “Oh yeah, why not?” asks the captain. “Jews sink Titanic.” “What? That’s insane! Jews didn’t sink the Titanic!” exclaims the captain, “It was an iceberg!” “Iceberg, Goldberg, Greenberg, Rosenberg ...no mattah... all same.”

After their baby was born, the panicked father went to see the obstetrician. “Doctor,” the man said, “I don’t mind telling you, I’m a little upset because my daughter has red hair. She can’t possibly be mine!!” “Nonsense,” the doctor said. “Even though you and your wife both have black hair, one of your ancestors may have contributed red hair to the gene pool.” “It isn’t possible,” the man insisted. “This can’t be! Our families on both sides had jet-black hair for generations.” “Well,” said the doctor, “let me ask you this. How often do you have sex?” The man seemed a bit ashamed. “I’ve been working very hard for the past year. We only made love once or twice every few months.” “Well there you have it!” the doctor said confidently. “It’s rust.” One day a housework-challenged husband decided to wash his sweatshirt, seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to the wife, “What setting do I use on the washing machine?” It depends,’ she replied. “What does it say on your shirt?” He yelled back, “UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN!” And they say blondes are dumb! A police recruit was asked during the exam, ‘What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?’ He answered, “Call for backup.”
