t was in June of 1998 that Wild Thing and I made the decision to publish The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. In March of that year, we went to Daytona Bike Week and during our daily adventures we gathered all sorts of interesting literature, t-shirts, and souvenirs. Back at our campsite, usually the next morning, we would go through the previous day’s treasure. Among the various local “biker” publications, was a copy of Florida Full Throttle Magazine. Having previously lived in Sarasota, Florida, and been a part of the motorcycle community (Wild Thing worked at the local Yamaha shop) I saw ads and read of motorcycle shops that we were familiar with. We piled all that stuff in the truck and struck off on another adventurous day in Daytona. When we got back home, I read FFTM from cover to cover and mused that it would be great if someone would publish a magazine like that here in NC as flyers and word of mouth were the only avenues to find out about motorcycle events at that time. Then one day it hit me! If you want something done, do it yourself. The mantle fell on me. We went back to Florida to meet with the publishers and learn how we could publish Full Throttle Magazine in The Carolinas. They showed us the ropes and introduced us to some other people who were involved. It was interesting to say the least! Later that evening, on the 9th floor balcony of my father’s condo, while having a cold beverage and looking out over the Gulf Of Mexico, we contemplated whether, or not, to embark on this new journey. We were both undecided until a huge meteorite streaked across the sky. I mean it was HUGE! We looked at each other, taking it as a sign, and agreed to do it. The rest is history and a story for another day. “It will be fun. It will be easy”, they said. We had no idea what we were getting into, but we found out fast. The issue of The Carolinas’ Full throttle Magazine that you are holding in your hands is the result of nearly 19 years of the learning curve and the meteorite is on the cover of every issue as a reminder of the day it all began. BUlld g Although many of you have met him on the road, at a local event or maybe just seen his Ad in Full Throttle, you probably don’t know much about him and why he’s chosen to dedicate himself to the biker community. We sat down with Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer, to ask some questions about his past, the present and where he’s headed in the future. 40 years of representing injured bikers. Wow! Did you always want to be a lawyer? Where did you go to law school? Well in my younger days, I wanted to play baseball and then later got into music, which actually paid for a couple years of college. The band broke up with one of the guys going to play with BB King and another with Chuck Berry. Unfortunately [laughing] I wasn’t good enough to make a living in music or baseball and since I was about to graduate from college I needed to come up with a new plan. My buddy in the Marines suggested that I go to law school. My family didn’t have much money, my only option was to work my way through school with student loans. At one point, I remember working several jobs at the same time; bartender, waiter and construction. You name it. Over those three years, I probably did it. I attended law school at Samford University in Birmingham, AL and our mascot was a bulldog. It’s stuck with me ever since. I’ve been practicing personal injury law in the state of NC for coming on 40 years now and still going strong.

I began my career as a solo lawyer and needing work I went to the big firms in town asking that they send me any cases that they did not want to handle. They sent me personal injury cases, a lot of which involved motorcycles. I realized that the motorcycle accident victims were being taken advantage of by the insurance companies and there was a need for quality representation in the biker community and still is today. Insurance companies have no intention of doing the right thing and will play dirty when a motorcycle is involved. They will do everything possible to avoid paying a claim. That’s why it is so important for bikers to hire an attorney who knows how to operate a motorcycle. I can’t tell you how many cases we have successfully completed for bikers who have been turned down by other attorneys before coming to our firm. In my opinion, there’s NO way someone can properly represent and protect a motorcycle accident victim if they know nothing about motorcycles. This is a problem many riders run into when they hire a lawyer without any riding experience. My first bike was a 1970 Yamaha. I loved riding then and still do today. What are you most proud of in your life/career? Well family always comes first for me. I’m proud of my son and daughter. I’m also proud of my Associate Attorney, Sean Clayton. He’s a very talented attorney who graduated from App State with honors and got his law degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. He grew up in a family of bikers and, like me, put himself through college and law school. I’m proud of the work we do. We’ve become the firm for bikers and have been able to help thousands of folks return to their lives and get back on the road. I’m proud when I win a case for a family who was told by other attorneys that they have no case. Ginger: I have to interject here. I want to say that not a week goes by that I don’t encounter a client of his or a biker who tells me that my husband changed their life for the better. That when no other lawyer would take their case, Bob stepped up and not only personally took care of them through their recovery, but got them a settlement that they could have never even imagined. Just last week at a dealership I was approached by a woman who lost her husband in a motorcycle accident. She introduced herself, gave me a hug and said that Bob is not just her lawyer, he’s family. I don’t see as much of Bob as I’d like, because he’s always working,

but I do rest easy knowing he makes a positive difference in people’s lives. Recently, Governor Roy Cooper contacted Bob and invited him to be on a committee to help our great state of North Carolina. We are really flattered and I know Bob will do a great job. In your 40 years of practice, what is the biggest change you’ve seen?

Do you have a favorite motorcycle?

So much has changed. Fighting insurance companies today is harder than ever before. Distracted driving is a constant battle. Cell phones, texting, selfies, plus all of the devices installed in cars that take attention away from the road. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve pulled cell phone records of the at-fault driver and found that they were either texting or talking on the phone at the time of the accident. As riders, we have to always keep our eyes peeled and be ready for anything. What is the largest settlement or victory you’ve had for a client? Gosh. That’s tough. There are so many. One that stands out in my mind is when I turned down a $7 million offer for a young mother because I knew she needed more. I ended up getting her the $8 million I demanded and she deserved. It doesn’t matter if it’s a multi-million dollar settlement or a $10,000 settlement, I fight just as hard for all of my clients. To the insurance companies, accident victims are just numbers on a piece of paper. My clients are friends and family. Winning their case means everything; sometimes its survival, paying the mortgage, putting food on the table, taking care of their children. What we do makes a difference in peoples’ lives and that’s what keeps me going and pushes me to fight harder. What’s your favorite ride? That’s another tough one. Ginger and I love to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway in the spring, summer and fall for local getaways. The touring trips we’ve done have been spectacular: Mount Rushmore, Black Hills, Montana, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Florida Keys, the California Coastline. America is so beautiful! Experiencing our national parks on a motorcycle is fantastic and I have to admit Yellowstone is my personal favorite. Ginger’s my

Well I did love my crazy custom build, but you can’t beat a Harley. I love my Heritage Softail, but for longer trips I enjoy my Road Glide. The tour pack for Ginger is really comfortable. I have always wanted a classic Indian though. The new models are gorgeous, but Ginger says I’m cut off! Looking forward, what’s ahead for the Bulldog? We’ll soon be opening a second location in the Raleigh/ Durham area which I’m very excited about. We are also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Karney Biker Calendar. Ginger produces it every year and features owners, builders and dealerships throughout the Carolinas. She’s shot over 125 cool bikes over the years. I keep asking her to make me a big book! The highlight for me every year is the Bulldog Hero Awards which will be handed out this summer for bikers that make a difference in their communities. Don’t forget to nominate someone you know! We’ve now donated over $35,000 to biker’s charities and look forward to doing more this year! Then, Ginger and I will be riding with friends to the Outer Banks this summer and then Daytona in October. If you could give bikers one piece of advice, what would it be? Make sure you protect yourself and get enough insurance coverage! It is a very minimal fee to get UNDER-INSURED and UN-INSURED coverage on all your vehicles. These are specific requests you want to make to your insurance company. If anyone is unsure what kind of coverage to get, tell them to call me. It breaks my heart when I get a call from a biker that’s gone down and the driver who caused the wreck had minimal insurance coverage. Many times that is the situation and that’s why bikers need to have their own coverage. Those kind of situations keep me up at night. Oh, and don’t forget your rain gear in the summer! I learned that the hard way more than once.

8th Annual AMCA Southern National Meet By: Alan Dockery We couldn’t have asked for a nicer May weekend for the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Southern National Meet. For eight years, they have come to Denton Farm Park in Denton, NC, to let y’all see, hear, touch, and smell the history of motorcycling. Not only were there lots of cool old machines to check out, but there were plenty of bikes and parts for sale. too. The AMCA meet is mainly a Friday and Saturday event. The serious parts guys are digging through boxes Friday. For y’all who want to check out the meet and activities you can ride in Saturday morning and enjoy it in one day. Sunday is when they judge the bikes seeking national recognition. This year’s theme was Indian Motorcycles and there were lots of them on site to checkout. As more folks see what goes on at Denton, there are more who come for the whole weekend. That gives them more time for checking out the vendors, bikes, and hanging with friends. Camping at Denton Farm Park is nice with acres of cool, shady woods. I know you can buy everything online these days, but a real swap meet still has its advantages. Online you hope the part is what they claim and what you need. Buying in person at Denton allows you to examine the part, haggle with the seller, and sometimes get an

The three sponsoring AMCA chapters; Blue Ridge, Dixie and Catawba Valley picked the perfect place since Denton Farm Park enhances the antique experience with several old buildings featuring historical equipment and machinery, plus antique train rides. Bob Aton, Meet Chairman, has done a great job the last eight years building an event praised by bikers from all over the country. They often compliment Bob and the staff on hosting such a cool meet. Between the historical site and the Southern hospitality, the meet brings people back year after year. “We had a huge, spectacular turnout this year for the 8th Annual Southern National AMCA meet, both in vendors and spectators,” Bob said. “This was probably the biggest event we have had. It’s hard to believe that we are getting close to having done this for 10 years, and we continue to grow. We continue to get vendors from across the United States, bringing their old motorcycle parts to be sold. This year we had so many vendors that we had to continuously mark off spots on Thursday and Friday.” “We were super grateful to Buzz Kanter of American Iron Magazine for bringing his Kick Start Classic to our meet. We also thank Buzz for his participation in both the narrated antique bike parade and for being the speaker at our banquet. He shed light on the fact that we need to get younger participants in our sport,” Bob said. “As usual the Denton Farm Park owners continue to keep us in a wonderful setting. Also, the weather was spectacular.” Saturday’s activities started with the Antique Bike Road Run through the beautiful Carolina countryside. Not long after they rode out, The Kick Start Classic group rolled in. This is Buzz Kanter’s ride across the North Carolina mountains for old motorcycles. I hope y’all had a hot bologna sandwich and cold Cheerwine for lunch before the afternoon got busy.

One of the coolest features of the AMCA Southern National Meet is the History In Motion narrated parade of antique motorcycles. Riders line up and wait their turn to pull up to a spot, surrounded by folks, while each bike is described. This is so much better than just a bike show. The narrator tells us who is riding what. But often the rider takes the microphone and gives more details and stories about their machine. Buzz stepped up and did a great job as narrator. After the parade, folks moved to the field games area. You should have seen the guys and gals competing on old bikes with foot clutches and hand shifters. It was amazing how well some can ride those old machines. Once the field was clear, bikes pulled in for the Concourse D’Ordinaire, a bike show for the common bike. Any bike could enter as long as it was old and ran. This is a cool little show with awards for things like Least Chrome, Most Rustic, Least Paint, Most Cobbled, Most Sordid. Later in the evening there was a banquet catered by BBQ Joe’s and each year they have a guest speaker share a different aspect of motorcycling. This year, Buzz Kanter of American Iron Magazine was the speaker at the 8th Annual AMCA Southern National Banquet. The AMCA Southern National meet is the Carolinas’ event you must attend if you are into the history of motorcycles. Bikers can check out historic machines and spend hours talking to the guys who saved and restored them. You will see some of the oldest motorcycles running and rideable. You can buy bikes and parts to start your own project. Motorcycles 35 years old are considered antiques. That now includes the imports many of us grew up riding. Yes, there are lots of Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, Nortons, and the bikes we are used to seeing at antique meets. But the Japanese bikes and parts vendors are increasing, too. Many of us have fond memories of those machines. The AMCA Southern National meet is not a snobby gathering of guys with high-dollar antiques. It is for you and that clean old machine you found in a shed or the ratty project bike you’d rather ride than restore. Come join us next year at Denton. Ray Price Harley-Davidson Celebrates 35 Years By: WildThing Saturday, June 4 was a very special day for the friends and family of Ray Price Harley-Davidson in Raleigh, NC. I say family because this Harley dealership was celebrating 35 years in business as a family run dealership. Ray, while he was alive, and Jean Price and her whole staff treat their customers so well, they become part of the ‘family’ of Ray Price HarleyDavidson. Merriam-Webster defines ‘homecoming’ as the act of returning to your home or to a place that is like your home. This was in evidence as South Saunders Street was parked full of motorcycles and the Raleigh H.O.G. Chapter members were out in full force greeting visitors and encouraging everyone to participate in the activities. This H.O.G. chapter was also celebrating a milestone – their 30-year anniversary and they had a whole weekend of activities scheduled. On the outdoor stage, the band “Driver” was performing some Lynyrd Skynyrd tunes and other biker friendly rock and roll hits. Raleigh H.O.G. had two tents set up in the parking lot, one to recruit new members and another offering free

motorcycle safety checks. There was also a food truck offering pizza and hamburgers for hungry bikers. Inside, we heard the bell ring twice when someone purchased a new motorcycle that day. At 1 pm, Ms. Jean appeared on the showroom floor and was introduced to the crowd, by Kris Weiss, who asked her about being in business for thirty-five years. She told us that when she and Ray started the dealership they “had no idea what we were getting into!” Jean Price is well loved by her customers and staff alike. Then she began to cut the two beautiful cakes for everyone to enjoy. One was for the 35th Anniversary of the Ray Price Harley-Davidson dealership and the other was for the 30th Anniversary of the Raleigh H.O.G. Chapter. Nikki, Miss Ray Price Harley-Davidson, was on hand to assist in the cake cutting and serving. It didn’t take long before the last piece was scooped up. Throughout the day, items were on display on the drag strip as part of silent auction and the H.O.G. members were selling 50/50 tickets. At 3pm, last call was made and the auc-

tion items were awarded to the highest bidders. There was a lot of cool stuff, Kyle Petty autographed light-weight HD jacket, a garden fountain, a nice rolling luggage, HD hoodies, a collectible tank set, H.O.G. embroidered hand towels, and a pair of boots, to name few. Jean had donated a Charlie 1 Horse beaver cowboy hat that had been autographed by Richard Petty and given to Ray Price some time ago. It was clearly the prize of the auction and bidding was hot the closer it got to 3pm. Since all the auction items were donated, the total amount of money raised was donated to Victory Junction Gang Camp, as well as the proceeds from the 50/50. I believe I heard almost $1600 from the auction and $207 from the 50/50 going to that wonderful children’s camp. This really topped a fun day – true to many bikers’ philosophy: riding motorcycles, biker camaraderie, and helping a cause, especially for the children.

JJ’s Watering Hole Grand Opening

By: Mark Infield Sunday, June 11th was a particularly nice day for drinking beer, eating BBQ, and listening to music. JJ’s Watering Hole provided the perfect setting for it, too. Situated in the Motorcycle Park next to Harley-Davidson Of Greensboro, two huge oak trees and green grass along with a delightful breeze just added to the euphoria. Out front, Fatman and his crew, Jamie and Dennis, had 10 butts and 30 pounds of chicken on the grill and smoked them to perfection. Add slaw, baked beans, and an ice-cold brewski to the music by Cannon Ball and you had one happy bunch of bikers. Many friends gathered to help Jeff and Jean Cozzens celebrate. Bikes came and went all afternoon. The bar was full and families sat at tables under the big oaks and some were playing corn hole in the shady grass. It was nice! Tii Tharpe Wins First NHRA Race

Story by Alan Dockery Longtime Harley-Davidson drag racer, Tii Tharpe, hoisted his first Wally when he won the Top Fuel Harley class at the National Hot Rod Association Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Fifth Annual New England Nationals at Epping, NH the first weekend of June. The NHRA trophy is called a Wally, modeled after NHRA founder Wally Parks. Tii earned his in the fifth race at this level and set his quickest time ever in the final round. Tii, from East Bend, NC, has been drag racing for “By a thousand feet decades. I first saw Tii roarI had blown on ing down the Rockingham past him.” Dragway soon after I retired from the service and returned to Carolina. They had some big Harley drags at The Rock in those days. He was part of the Wood Pile group, racing with Scot Wood and that crew. His dad, Marty Tharpe, bought the All Harley Drag Racing Association in 1997. Craig Tharpe is his uncle and got into the drag racing and ran it for many years. “Those were some great years,” Tii said. “In 1998 and 99 we ran a quick Pro Mod bike. We won the championship and set records in those days.” By 2000 Tii progressed into Pro Dragster, the carbureted,

small engine nitro bikes. At the end of the year banquet, Weasel and Johnny Cool asked Tii to ride his Pro Fuel bike. Then he really got his feet wet in nitromethane. “In 2002 and 2003 I rebuilt a top fuel bike,” Tii said. “Well Jim McClure actually finished it up. We went out and raced around and tried to get ready to even go to a race and be competitive. Got down the track and had limited success. Then we got up with Bill Furr and Rex Harris and got a system on the bike that we could tune. After that we started making some good laps. Ran that bike from 2003 to 2005.” “Then we had a son, I had to move around, money is funny and top fuel racing is expensive. So, I sat out for quite a few years. Tracy Kile called and I started running with Bad Apple Racing for a few years. Three years ago, he brought on Frank Capone. It worked out perfect for me since I got to race with Jay Turner,” Tii said. Jay Turner is one of the best guys in Top Fuel Harley racing. He has lots of bike and decades of experience. Jay won the 2016 NHRA and IHRA Top Fuel Championships. Already has wins in 2017. “It has been an honor and privilege to race with Jay,” Tii said. “I’m glad that Tracy got me back involved. Jay has made me a better rider and put me on some really good equipment. Gained a lot of experience and he even let me keep riding after I crashed one of his bikes. He has put together a great team of

people including Justin Heinle, Jeremy Hoy, and Don Newlove.” “I qualified fourth with a 6.29,” he said. “First round ran a 6.26 against Mike Scott. I had Tracy in the second round. Don’t know where he was finding his lights. He was tuned up and cut my eyes out at the line (with a great reaction time). But Maddy (the bike’s nickname) ran him down and I finally got on him at about the eighth mile. By a thousand feet I had blown on past him. Ran another 6.26 at 227.96. “Must have been an exciting pass to watch,” Tii said. “Maddy touched down at the eight mile then came back up and hit the bars so hard she carried the front end past a thousand feet. “I had Sharky, Rickey House, in the final round. I knew it would be a bare-knuckle brawl. Rickey has been on fire this year. Knew I had to push it at the tree and hold on to it for 1,320 feet. I ran a 6.248 at 227.96.” That was Tii’s quickest pass ever and first NHRA major national event win. “It was a great weekend,” he said. “I became an uncle, too, when my brother had a son. Winning at Epping was special. I love Rockingham and lots of places. But the fans in Epping are really die hard drag race fans and really love our motorcycles up there.” Tii is on a roll and at print time earned his second Wally when he won the NHRA race at Bristol Dragway. Tii Tharpe, took down teammate and Top Fuel Harley points leader Jay Turner while throwing down a 205.01 mph run in the process.

He rattled off a 6.549-second pass on the nitro-burning bike to capture his second Wally of the season. Tii is president of SPEVCO, Special Vehicles Company, which manufactures and operates a lot of equipment you have seen in many places. They make the hospitality trailers you see at races. Smokin’ Harley-Davidson 8th Anniversary Celebration

By: Caroline Smokin’ Harley-Davidson 8th Anniversary was celebrated this year on May 20th and was definitely the place to be. It is Smokin’s way of kicking off the riding season in a big way. They have a huge celebration with vendors, food, live music, and the ultimate prize a drawing for a free motorcycle! The fun started at 9 am and soon the place was packed. Those who had not pre-registered for the drawing were able to do so until 1 pm that afternoon. So, folks ate, shopped, browsed, or just hung out with friends until then. Also, local DJ, Crazy Chris, and the band Dark Horse entertained folks throughout the day. You could tell the drawing was about to happen, when Brother Bill and general manager Ray Perry started wheeling out that beauti-

ful 2017 Heritage Softail Classic to the stage area. Two Guys named Chris and Biggie from Rock 92 announced that the drawing would be a reverse drawing until they have 10 tickets left. At that time those ten folks would get a key to try to start the bike. Talk about intense! It didn’t take but 2 or 3 people until, the winner was revealed. I remember when the winner, Ted Trexler, walked up to the bike with his key, not expecting it to be the one to start the bike. Man, he was sure surprised! By: Robert Sisk Run For The Wall travels through Hickory, NC each year on the Wednesday before Memorial Day as they make their way to Washington, DC. The riders are from all over the United States. They all assemble in California and within 10 days make their journey across the land that we love. Each day consists of stops at memorials, schools, and churches in which they have ceremonies with the locals in those towns, sharing stories, having lunch, and taking in the experience. There are three different routes traveling through as many cities as possible. The Midway Route is the group that rumbles down Interstate 40 and according to RFTW road guard Ryan “Pipes” Long, they had 273 riders this year on the Midway Route. I actually had the pleasure of meeting Ryan last year as we were standing on an overpass with our American flags waving, welcoming them through and taking pictures. We captured a photo of him and another rider “high five”. After seeing the photo, we hurried to the fueling stop in Statesville and looked for the photo friendly duo to show the picture and share it with them. That’s when we met “Pipes” and “10 Bears”. Now it is our yearly routine to welcome them through, waving Ol’ Glory high and proud as they salute her when passing by! Rick “Hawk” McDowell, the North Carolina state coordinator for RFTW added, “The mission of Run For The Wall is to recognize the men and women that were left behind in all wars. POW’s and MIA’s. PGR Mission for Patrick Ryan (Rick) Baird By: Wally Wersching I’ve been to many PGR missions, and they are all different while all being the same. A veteran has died, and we are there to honor him (or her). Most of them are for men who served their country, and afterwards led a prosperous and fruitful life. They all were missed by their family – wife, children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. I was sorry to see any of them die, but it seemed that it was their time to go. The PGR Mission for Patrick “Rick” Baird was very different. In 20062007, he was deployed with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit during Operation Iraqi Freedom. When he came home, he was a student at the University of South Carolina - Upstate. Rick was only thirty-two years old when his car hit the tree,

where he died at the scene. He didn’t have a long and prosperous life after he served. It was not his time to go. His wife, Samantha, is expecting their first daughter, Viviana - due in July. This was truly a sad mission. I received the notification on Monday, May 15th. It said that the mission would be at 11:45 am. I planned to go. It was only a short distance from home. I checked the obituary for Rick to get acquainted with him before I paid my respects and learned that the funeral was supposed to start to 10 am. I notified the Mission Leader, Frank, of the discrepancy. He quickly corrected the notification. On May 17th (a beautiful Wednesday morning), I rode south to get to I-85. I headed toward Spartanburg, and exited at Rte. 176 toward Inman, SC. The First Baptist North Spartanburg was about a mile up on the right. It is a huge church complex with an adjoining school. After about 20 minutes, it was time for the second team which I was part of. Because there was only one US Marine in the group, I volunteered to hold the US Marine flag. I was stationed at the corner of the building. I watched as Samantha walked into the church. She looked pretty shaken but holding up pretty good for what she was going through. Rick’s father came by me, gently touched my

arm, and said thanks for holding the US Marine flag. We stood down as the service started, and waited for the unusual burial service. There would be no three volleys. Rick was going to be cremated afterwards. We formed a semi-circle around the front of the church and waited for the casket holding Rick to come out. We all saluted when the trumpeter played taps. Many times, the trumpet is plastic with a recording of taps. This time it was real. He actually played the trumpet, and was very good. The US Marine Honor Guard removed the US flag from the top of the casket, and folded it into the traditional triangle. Afterwards, they presented one to Samantha and another to Rick’s mom. The casket was then wheeled to the hearse to take Rick to the crematory. That’s when it happened. I was standing across from Samantha, and saw her collapse with grief clutching onto the flag in her arms. People ran to her trying to console her but she was sobbing uncontrollably. I couldn’t hold back the tears either. It was a very emotional time for us all. We stood down, and brought the flags back to the truck. We said good-by as we got ready to leave. We enjoy meeting each other from time to time but it’s always because a veteran has died. I was honored to be part of Rick’s service, and will remember it for a long time.

2017 Ride Of Pride Dedication

By: Gary Steelman May 26, 2017 marked fifteen years of the Ride of Pride for Freightliner of Cleveland, NC. The event was held in the parking lot of the Cleveland plant. All employees were treated to breakfast sandwiches and coffee as the dedication began at 8 am. The parking lot was full of people, employees, visitors, and members of CMA, Rolling Thunder, American Legion Riders, and individual riders all wanting to be part of the escort for the Ride Of Pride and the Ride Of Honor trucks on their way to Washington, DC for the Run To The Wall. The ceremony began with the opening prayer and the Pledge Of Allegiance. The crowd became somber as the names of NC MIA’s from the Vietnam War were read and the bell was sounded for each name. The Ride Of Pride is sponsored by Schneider National Inc. again this year, a beautiful Freightliner truck displaying murals of the varied war memorials found around Washington, DC. The Vietnam Veterans memorial, Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier and the Flag Raising at Iwo Jima are fantastic renderings and are heart touching images. This year’s Ride Of Pride is to be driven by David Price, an Iraq/ Afghanistan war veteran chosen by Schneider National Inc. David has named this year’s truck “The American” a great name for the Ride Of Pride 2017. David and The American

will tour the country attending Gold Star Family events and other veteran related gatherings until next May when the 2018 Ride Of Pride truck will be unveiled. Great memories will be created by these two in the coming months touring this great nation. David and his predecessors driving Ride Of Pride trucks have taken up a tradition of naming their Ride Of Pride trucks. “Valor” and “Patriot” are the names given to the last

two trucks by their drivers. David and The American have a journey ahead of them, displaying the gratitude of a nation for its warriors and defenders. Thank you guys for picking up that mantle. The Ride Of Honor 2017 is a Western Star 5700 sponsored by Chief Express. The Ride Of Honor is another beautiful truck commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The mural here is of before the attack and the aftermath. The Ride Of Honor remembers the sacrifice and loss of that day December 7, 1941. Two thousand, three hundred and thirtyfive US servicemen were killed that day, and 1,143 were wounded. This truck honors their life of service and sacrifice. The ceremony was also attended by several war horses from Freightliner’s line of military trucks, those hulking beige trucks have been built right here in Cleveland, NC. It was good to see those trucks again. The escort contingent was 85 bikes strong, with several chase vehicles in tow. The Plant manager Henning, rode in the Ride Of Pride all the way to Washington, DC and I heard he even drove some of the way. Darrell Plonk and the Ride Of Pride board have done a wonderful job with this year’s trucks. Thanks must go to Rolling Thunder and the American Legion Riders for their support and loyalty to the Ride Of Pride. The Ride Of Pride is a yearly event. Trucks have been built since 2002 to honor the service, memory, and sacrifice of America’s servicemen and women. 2018’s Ride Of Pride is just another 10 months away. Come and join us in honoring the memory of those “who gave all.”

Trax-Side Bike Rally By: Buzz There is no better way to kick off the summer than motorcycles, friends, music, and beer. That is just what the Trax-Side bike rally was offering. Earlier in the year Rusty and Jana, owners of Trax Tavern in Thomasville, NC, pulled me aside to tell me about a big idea. They wanted to give Thomasville, NC its first bike rally. Bike Rally? I’m Game! They got together with Thomasville Tourism Commission Director, Jarrod Dunbar, and hatched a plan that turned into the TraxSide Bike Rally. The date was set for June 10th and we couldn’t have asked

for a better day. The sun was out and it looked great shining on the sea of chrome that filled the Pace Park parking lot. The rally began at 11am and I got there a few minutes past the hour and extended the long line of motorcycles that had already filled the lot. Pace Park is in the heart of Thomasville, within spitting distance of “The Big Chair”, a 30’ landmark armchair that rests in the center of the city. Pace Park is an amphitheater style park with a permanent band stand and is divided into 3 grassy sections by single rows of curved concrete benches making it perfect place to take in some live music. The early day June heat kept everyone in the shade of the water tower that is directly at the back of the park, but the beautiful Trax Tavern bartenders were slingin beer in the beer garden and kept everyone cooled off. The Thomasville farmers market is next door to Pace Park and provided the space for a cornhole tournament and more shade under a huge permanent canopy. One of the main features of the Trax-Side Rally was a Food Truck Rodeo. Behind the park was a handful of the finest food trucks and let me tell you, the air was filled with the smell of food and it was irresistible. I grabbed some grub and went down to check out the handful of vendors in the parking lot. Leather goods, handmade jewelry, and a local tattoo studio were all on hand if you were in the market. I made some rounds to catch up with some friends that I hadn’t seen in bit and looked for some shade. All the while the bands were cranking out tunes. The Karolina Rose Band, Brothers Pearl, Street Party, and MKB were on the lineup that

were to keep the music going till 9pm that evening. In between bands DJ TommyRock kept the crowd energized and the ladies dancing. You, sir, can really keep a party going! To escape the heat, you could duck into Trax Tavern that was just around the corner. The bar was full of happy patrons and the bartenders were awesome. They made sure to keep every whistle wet and for the crowd around the bar they kept the wait to a minimum. If you haven’t ever been to Trax Tavern, it’s a great stop in the heart of Thomasville. Street side parking, cold beer, and a great atmosphere always greet you at Trax Tavern. Look for their ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and stop by for a good time. A big thank you to Rusty, Janna, and Jerrod for their vision and hard work to bring the Trax-Side Rally to life in Thomasville. I look forward to going back next year! Carolina Field Of Honor Memorial Day Recognition By: Rose and Lloyd Memorial Day, which is observed every year on the last Monday in May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War, in 1868. The Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union Veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois established it as a time for the nation to clear and decorate the graves of the Union Veterans. On May 5th,1866, the town of Waterloo, NY closed down for the day so residents could clear and decorate graves. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veteran’s Day. On Memorial Day we honor all Veterans that have passed. On Veteran’s Day, we honor all Military. The Carolina Field of Honor Memorial Day Recognition is the 2nd largest on the east coast. The colors were retired and Rob O’Hanlon introduced guest speaker, Major General Andrew O’Donnell, Jr. In 35 years, Major General O’Donnell accomplished more prestigious awards, than anyone I ever heard of. As a career pilot, his speech was not only heart felt, tearful at times, and full at times. It was such an honor to hear and talk with him. The best part to me was when he quoted the oath of office that all Military must take. There were closing statements by Tom Dayvault. Being a part of the ceremony, meeting all the veterans, young, old, bikers, and hearing the pride they still feel, makes you really truly understand what each one has done for our freedom. God bless each family that was showing respect for a pass loved one, there were many tears shed that day.

Raging Bull Super Charged Saturday By: Kathy Johnson If you are a clock watcher, 11-3 on Saturdays is the time you want to be at Raging Bull H-D in Durham, NC. They have a party every Saturday with free food, free beer, and a free band so that equals a free good time. I stopped in on June 10th and had a blast. It was good to see a bunch of people that I hadn’t scene in a long time, and word of a good time seems to be spreading. So that brought allot of familiar faces out for a large day. It’s not hard not to notice the largest inventory I have ever seen in that building overflowing on the show room floor. If you are looking to purchase a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, this is an easy decision. Raging Bull H-D will not lose a deal over a $$. So, give them a try because they tell me that they are the last dealer you will ever need and they will not be under sold. Now that could be music to some of your ears or it could be you hitting the switch on your new ride. What I have watched unfold so far is impressive. Ride For The Kids Motorcycle Rally By: Johnny Reb Saturday, June 3rd was the day I have been looking forward to for the last few months when I heard about this rally. If you want to get some bikers excited about a charity, all you have to mention is veterans, kids, or animals. There is just something about a child needing help that will get even the biggest bearded, tattooed monster biker’s heart to melt. So, off to the town of Angier we went! First thing, let me lay out what the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is all about. They are the world’s largest charity devoted entirely to helping the pediatric brain tumor community. There are roughly 28,000 children at any given time diagnosed with this terrible disease. That means there are 28,000 families dealing with this devastating disease. As a father of

Please check their site out to see what you can do to help. Now, for the rally itself let me just say, Holy Crap! What a turnout! The police had roads blocked off in the center of town, and every street was filled end to end with bikes. There were some beautiful machines to check out and that was just what people rode in! After Attitude and I walked around, we figured it was about time to put the old feed bag on so we went over and saw our friend Morris at Good Times Café. Now when you go into his restaurant the first thing you will notice is the décor, let’s just say bikers are more than welcome. Go get some of the best food around. The meat for the burgers is ground fresh there daily! The buns are delivered daily and instead of just regular rolls he uses the best fresh baked Kaiser roll you will get. After eating we were about ready to head back to Snow Hill, it’s about an hour and half from Angier so we said our goodbyes and hit the road. As always before I sign off I want to list all the MC’S present. Again, if I missed your club no disrespect intended. Next time please come on up and introduce yourself, and we will definitely get you in the next time. So here we go, Hells Angels MC, BBQ brothers RC, Desperado MC, Southern Riders MC, Red Devils MC, Enforcers MC, Combat Vets MC, Seven Sabres RC, Sons of Confederate Riders MC, Legion Riders Post 436, Granville Grays MC, Sheep Dawgs MC, Patriot Guard Riders MC, and the last but definitely not least is BACA MC. The 12th Annual Hogs & Rags Rally ride went from Fayetteville, NC to Wild Wing Café at Myrtle Beach South Carolina’s Barefoot Landing again this year. The ride was totally escorted by Cumberland County, Bladen County, Columbus County, and Horry County who all did an outstanding job!! This event is in Fayetteville and has been growing every year

The Hogs & Rags Rally, the premier community charity event that combines all types of vehicles and different types of motorcycles, great food, for great causes, all equals up to one great time! They were leading us, along with the Sheriff Deputy escort, all the way to Myrtle Beach, SC. Knowing that the ride will benefit others just makes the day that much better. Proceeds will benefit the Special Forces Charitable Trust Fund, The American Cancer Society, and Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation. Even though there is a Sheriff escort for the entire ride from Fayetteville to Myrtle Beach, SC, the Hogs & Rags organizers know that to have a fun and safe ride, keeping hundreds of rid-

By: Bill Gallaway The 2017 South Carolina District Gold Wing Rally was held Friday through Sunday, May 5-7, 2017. This year the rally was held in Beaufort, South Carolina. Nobody could remember if a rally was ever held there in previous years, and since I’ve never been to Beaufort, the opportunity was one I wanted to take advantage of. Beaufort, SC is a very historic area with lots to see and experience. Wherever you are, you are only minutes from an historic site. Over the years this rally has been held in Anderson and Greenville, SC that I know of, but there is a lot to be said for the Low Country area. It’s funny folks from the Low Country yearn to ride the twisties and the mountains, and those of us who are used to the foothills enjoy I was amazed the Low Country with the live oaks at how many and Spanish moss that are a sight to Gold Wingers behold. were already When I arrived on Friday, I was there. amazed at how many Gold Wingers were already there. I saw tags from OH, NC, TN, SC, AL, GA, and possibly more. The place was packed! This was my 2nd trip to a Gold Wing Rally and this one was larger than the last one that I attended. The weather was very cooperative with temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s and for the most part no clouds – a perfect weekend! This year’s rally featured the talent of our very own members in the District Talent Show. During the day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday there were Guided Tours to the Old Sheldon Church Ruins, the Parris Island Museum, and Fort Fremont / Lands’ End. The tours ran in what seemed like an endless loop. There were always folks going somewhere. I wanted to take a horse drawn carriage ride. Maybe the Kentucky Derby was on my mind. We didn’t win any race. The poor horse had to pull a 3,000-pound carriage thru town. My carriage was pulled by Silver, a beautiful horse that was well mannered and handled the traffic and motorcycle noise just fine. There seemed to be something happening constantly from the Scavenger Hunt around town, trying out the areas great restaurants with some fine shrimp, seafood and Gullah cooking, and there were many places along Bay Street to unwing. I mean unwind. If that wasn’t enough to keep you busy, you could visit the vendors on hand in the Old Bay Marketplace selling t-shirts, helmets, patches, and food. Sunday morning, there was a church service in the Bayfront Area followed by more touring and awards presentations for the various activities that participants voted on over the past 2 days. 3rd Annual Pete’s Ride By: Rose & Lloyd Peter Belmonte was a strong young man, a firefighter, and loved by many. He remained strong through his personal battle. In 2012, he was diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma Brain Tumor. Having his first surgery and treatments. In February 2012, he met Missie at what was then Chunk’s Hawg Haven. on the ride. After five months of planning Cindy Welborn and her warriors made the ride a huge success again. The ride began at Double D’s, with approximately 150 bikes, going to JJ’s Watering Hole, then a great ride through the country to Gene’s Early Times Bar. Then back to Double D’s for music, food, raffle, auctions, and a lot of love. Many thanks to the band Under The Gun and Rick “Fatman” Young and helpers for the great food. Thanks to Karen Hatchet, Samantha Winslow, and Candy Haglund for being there through everything. They were there to help through it all. Thanks to all the volunteers and warriors that helped throughout the ride. Thanks to Cox’s Harley-Davidson, Greensboro Harley-Davidson, Cycle Gear, Indian Motorcycle of Greensboro, and everyone that donated time and items for raffle. The John Pennington Love Run By: Everette “EZ” Short Early in the morning of March 9th, John Pennington had a severe wreck on his motorcycle. In the accident, he suffered multiple facial, rib and skull fractures when his bike went down. His neck was so badly broken that several vertebrae had to be fused together for support and his eyelid has undergone an extensive reconstructive processes. Since then, John has weathered multiple major surgeries and is currently recovering from a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Thankfully, he is healing and getting better every day, but the hospital bills are overwhelming and we don’t know how long it will be before John can return to work. Fast forward to three months later, on Saturday, June 10th, when a slew of friends, family and even folks we didn’t know joined together for an unforgettable fund raiser. With 50 plus bikes on the run, and well over 100 people attending the ride, as well as dropping in for the bake sale throughout the day, it was an awesome show of love on the bikes and one hoo haw of an grand strand bake sale. There were great raffle prizes, fantastic food that was off the hook and the wonderful fellowship of all these great people coming together to help one of their own. In a word, it was humbling. The ride gathered together in Socastee at The 707 Bar and Grill, with bikes rolling out at noon to take over Donny’s Dog House for a toast to both living and lost loved ones, with a

slew of hugs, tears, beers and cheers. Then, it was a good ride north in the sun to the sprawling fields, across the covered bridge and into the cold beer haven that is Harley’s Roadhouse in Little River. In a quick minute of hugs, love, beer and laughter, the crowd hit the road southbound to SBB and then back to Patty’s Dew Drop Inn for a phenomenal spread of home cooked food, prizes and shenanigans. The crowd was amazing and the grand prize winner even gave back their loot to get more money in the bucket for John. The day long bake sale is still being raved about, and there might have even been some liquor in those delicious pastries, as well as the heaping helping of love that went into every morsel. It will take a while, but it’s good to see the progress he has made, since he is a man so full of life, that was recently fighting for his life. Again, it was great to see him smiling! A special WOW to the 9s has to go out to everyone who put this event together, baked, cooked, served drinks and especially to Monica “MoMo” Jimenez, who has stayed by his side throughout the time. 4th Annual Allison Hunt Memorial Scholarship Ride By Rose and Lloyd This year the Allison Hunt Memorial Scholarship Ride was held on a beautiful Saturday May 6, 2017.This ride began with scholarships to the senior class of 2012, after Allison lost her battle July 18, 2011. When Allison lost her battle, her parents wanted to keep her memory alive. That is when they choose to raise money every year to help students at Ledford High School. Before May 6, 2017, 10 seniors have been awarded scholarships totaling $33,000. This year two students received scholarships of $6000 each. I wanted this year’s article to show what these scholarships have meant to a few past recipients. The act of hard work and selfless love from Tamara and Larry Hunt will help insure their dreams. Dallas Berrier Class of 2013: Allison and I grew up together, she was my childhood best friend. We shared so many great memories and I will cherish them forever, and hold them close to my heart. Losing Allison is, to this day the hardest obstacle I have had to overcome in my

life, receiving this scholarship in honor of her name meant the world to me, and I will forever be grateful to Tamara and Larry for helping me succeed in my college career. I am currently at Guilford Technical Community College with one year left in my nursing program and plan to jump start straight into receiving my Bachelor’s Degree when I finish! Love you forever and always. Pooh! Before May 6, 2017, Mary Davis Class of 10 seniors have been 2013: Being a recipient awarded scholarships of the Allison Hunt Metotaling $33,000. morial Scholarship has meant so much to me. It helped me start my college career without having to worry about tuition. This scholarship also showed me that there are more people out there that are willing to give their time and money to help people than I thought there were in the world. The Hunts and community that helps with this memorial are amazing people. With their help, I am now about to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in media studies and Women’s and gender studies. Two things I am very passionate about. Thank you to each and every one. Bridget Lucas Class of 2015: This scholarship meant so much to me and my mom. All my life I have been someone between the definition of normal and disabled. High School was very difficult because of my shyness. The scholarship was the highlight of my high school career. I was able to go to my dream school, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Rolling Thunder 2017 The 30th Anniversary By: Reggie Hunter As I stood in the rain on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial Sunday afternoon, Rockie Lynn, a recording artist, had just acknowledged me for helping to organize the escort of the Ride Of Pride and the Ride Of Honor to Washington, DC. Next thing I knew a camera was thrust in my face and the reporter asked if I would do an interview. She asked me, “What does this event meant to you?” After taking the time to think about this question. Here is why this Rolling Thunder 2017 was special to me. As a veteran of the U.S Army and a Blue Star family, I know the cost of freedom. Memorial day is a day that we should honor and respect the men and women who have paid that price with their life. I come from 4 generations of Army men. My grandfather served with the Red Ball Express in WW2. My dad served in

the early stages of the Vietnam War. I served during the cold war and my son just finished his enlistment. I’m a 22-year employee of Daimler North America (Freightliner) at the Cleveland, NC plant. Fifteen years ago, who knew when we built the 1st Ride of Pride truck, Eagle 1, where we would be today. The ROP is built only in Cleveland, N.C, the idea for the ROP came from fellow employees who were veterans. They wanted a way to honor our fallen comrades and their families for their sacrifice for this great nation that we live in today. Since Eagle 1, we at Freightliner have come a long way. We have built a total of 19 Ride Of Pride trucks. Some years building a single truck and other years more than one with several partners in making these They wanted a way to honor trucks. Schneider’s Truckour fallen comrades and their ing has been families for their sacrifice for a main stay in this great nation that we our partnership live in today. for the past 10 years. Schneider’s awards their truck to only a veteran that drives for them. They have an application process from which those who drive for them apply to receive one the ROP trucks. In the next 13 months, the driver will tour the country going from event to event and making special deliveries, like the Christmas tree delivered to the White House and bringing in wreaths for Wreaths Across America to Arlington Cemetery. After meeting the newest ROP truck in Washington, following the demonstration a sort of turning over the banner to the newest ROP truck, then previous ROP returns to the fleet to work. Our newest proud partner is Chief Express who receives a Western Star with the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor theme featuring a before and after view. This was my 1st year being a member of the Ride Of Pride committee, a great bunch of people coming together for one cause. I learned a lot of what goes on behind the scenes, from determining who is a good fit for this special project here in Cleveland down to the designing of the truck. Many conference calls were made between our owner/partner of the ROP truck to make sure that all their needs were met and approval

of our newest design. The only part I claim for myself is the new slogan: Putting The P.R.I.D.E Back In The Ride. I do believe that we at Cleveland CTMP put the Passion, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, Excellence back in the Ride 1! I’m a member of Rolling Thunder N.C Chapter 2 located in Statesville, NC and I’m on the Board Of Directors. We meet every 1st Sunday of the month at 2 pm at the UAW Local 3520 on Hwy 70. This made my 6th ride to DC. I had the honor of riding the number 2 spot leading 85 bikes, 2 ROP trucks, and 3 cages. At the first stop my plant managers arranged for coffee and doughnuts for everyone. There we lost some bikes returning home and picked up some bikes heading to DC. Hennings O. Brunn has only been at Cleveland for 3 years now. He made Cleveland history by being the first plant manager to attend this ride with the ROP truck and Hennings had the honor of driving one of the trucks to DC, another 1st. My chairman of the ROP committee, Daryl Plonk, also attended the ride staying with the Ride Of Honor the whole weekend. While attending a performance by Rockie Lynn at the Harley-Davidson of Washington, we were honored to meet the second oldest survivor of Pearl Harbor. He is 103 years old and was assigned to the USS West Virginia. He was able to show us the location of his ship on our truck while giving his approval of our work on the truck. It was an honor to be able to take a picture with living history and to give the Vietnam veterans the respect, love, and honor they did not get when they returned home. I say to those Veterans, “Welcome home brothers and sisters. Thank you for your service”.

By: Mark Infield As I was searching my brain for a Mother’s Day gift for Wild Thing, I had a flash of brilliance! Molly, as she is known to our family, always spoke of getting her seat recovered in black ostrich one day and so I moved on this as a hint for this year’s gift idea. My second stroke of genius was taking her seat pan to Butch Watson of High Rollers Cycle Seats in Winston-Salem, NC. When I got there, Butch was not in, so I told Wayne what I had in mind. He passed that information on to Butch. High Rollers does lots of custom seats for well know builders and the shop was full of bikes waiting for their MB Bike Week upfit. I was pretty sure that I had gotten my order in in

time to get it back before Mother’s Day, so I waited patiently for my turn. When Butch got all of them completed, he waved his magic wand over an 18-year-old stock Harley Road King seat pan

and created a work of art. He took the artistic liberty, going above and beyond, of adding 94 diamonds pleated into the center of the seat. When I saw it, I was blown away! I was expecting black ostrich, but the 94 diamonds added another whole dimension and made it look fantastic! Not your average seat anymore! She was glad I went to High Rollers!

Isaac’s Benefit Ride

By: Trisha Beasley Isaac’s benefit ride was held on Saturday, April 29, 2017. Isaac James Jacobs is currently battling a disease of the brain called Adrenoleukodystophy (ALD). Isaac was born on September 16, 2002. He is 15 years old now. At the time of the first known complication of this disease Isaac was only 13 years old. On December 23, 2015; He went to sleep and when he awoke he was delusional. He was taken to the local emergency room and then later taken to UNC Chapel Hill where they completed numerous tests and found that Isaac was suffering from ALD. He is currently bed-ridden, blind, and must be given his liquid meals through a feeding tube. These horrific consequences are directly because of the disease. Isaac is the middle child of James and Amy Jacobs. They care for him in the home. Isaac is also assisted by his older sister, Kayla, age 17. He is also an older brother to a 2-yearold, Braxton. Before Isaac’s diagnosis of ALD, he was a typical 13-yearold boy. He played baseball, loved riding his four-wheeler, even had a great time raising chickens. Isaac is what we would call a true country boy. He loved any outdoor activities; he was active in boy scouts and recreational ball. He loved life and was very involved in many aspects of the community. Now, he sits and is cared for by others. He must attend medical follow up appointments all the time. But, other than those few things he is trapped in a body that he cannot control. ALD has robbed him of all the typically normal activities of a teenage boy and replaced his youth with a gamut of doctor visits and medical treatments. Isaac and his entire family were effected in such a horrific way. Their lives will never be the same. Currently, there is no cure of ALD, but there are screening tests that can be performed for newborns. If a baby is found to screen as positive for the disease; the patient can be treated and may have a chance at a normal life and may even avoid the dreaded onset, debilitation, and early death of ALD. Here’s

where you think of prevention as a parent you want to do anything and everything possible to ensure that your child gets the best possible chances at life. The more you know the better our children can grow, we can be more hopeful and people that screened positive for ALD as newborn can be treated and minimize the terrible tragedy of a most untimely death. You might have heard of “Aidan’s Law” (S 2641 & HR 4692). This was of course named for a young boy that suddenly was stricken with ALD just like Isaac. The bill would mandate a screening for all newborns and this law has made an impact already; New York has passed the bill on the state level and all newborns in New York are now tested for ALD but the fight continues so that all 50 states adopt the policy as part of their guidelines for early newborn screenings. As bikers rode to help Isaac and his family please take the time to help others that stand at risk of this inoperable, incurable and most devastating deadly disease. Tell mothers to opt to spend the $2.50 for an extra newborn screening for adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). If you talk with leaders in the community state or other local government be diligent and talk with them about the risks of ALD; the impact that this disease can have on a child’s life, a family’s life and state aloud the efforts that we could very cost effectively take to prevent these children’s early demise. Isaac’s family wanted to give everyone a special and heartfelt “Thank You” for their support on the ride for Isaac. They also wanted to provide a little information and awareness so hopefully other children just like Isaac can at least have a chance to combat the devastating effects of this genetic disease called Adrenoleukodysstrophy or ALD.

By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, June 10th was a beautiful day for a ride. What a better reason to ride than to ride to help a sweet little girl who has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. The Poker Run/ Cruise in began at Timms Harley-Davidson in Anderson, SC and made numerous stops in the immediate area. Rylee Brock, the 6-year-old, is using a wheel chair and needs some modifications to her home. Mom has her hands full and Dad was called to a better place so the poker run will help with making modifications to her home. To help raise funds, a guitar signed by Toby Keith was being raffled off with a drawing to be held at the end of the run. Winner of the Guitar was Ronald Rodgers. We wish the best to Rylee and her family.

2017 USMC EOD Poker Run By: Johnny Reb Jacksonville, NC was the place to be on 10 Jun 2017. There were more bikes and biker happenings than one city could contain. My wife Vanessa AKA Attitude and I struck out from our place in Snow Hill for the 60-mile ride to the coast, destination Jacksonville NC, home to New River MCAS, and my last duty station in the Corps, Camp Lejeune. It was a beautiful ride on our way over, around 80º. Yeah, well about 50 miles in the nice breeze stopped and the temps were hovering around 90º and climbing! clubs the famous Boozefighters MC, I didn’t see any of y’all that day, so I am gonna give y’all an honorable mention! Well, Attitude and I strolled into the AC and dropped off some of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines, with the intention of talking to the owner, but he was running hard behind that bar. The place was packed but we found out that, indeed, we were at a stop for the other poker run! Getting confusing, right? Two poker runs in one city? Needless to say, I just pointed my Street Glide to a shop that I knew could point me in the right direction, Combat Cycles. If this name sounds familiar it’s because the owner Jim, built a bike on national television for the Biker Build Off! We went in and sure enough we were back on track for the EOD Poker Run. We spoke to a Marine that I can’t name because he is a Prospect for Legacy Vets MC. He was very helpful explaining what the run is for and about the 2 MCs who are putting it on. First, the Vietnam Vets MC, a club that I admire very much, and knew first hand years ago. They are made up of Vietnam Vets who served in country from 1954 to 1975, and are very respected by those in the MC world. The second club is a club developed by the Vietnam Vets MC to keep the tradition going and it’s called Legacy Vets MC. If you served in any war after 1975 then you may qualify for them. Ask 1 to become 1. The proceeds from this poker run goes to help wounded EOD service members and their families. I found out the run started at Anytime Billiards and Grill. The other stops were Trophy Racks, Baily’s, Combat Cycles, Dukenfields, and ended back at Anytimes. I didn’t get to participate in the run exactly but did ride around hitting the spots I could. With both runs going, all I can say is there were hundreds of bikes going in twenty different directions! All of y’all that was in Jacksonville on the 10th, I hope you had as great time as me and Attitude did. The heat was pretty intense, but the AC and the beer was cold at the stops. Bikers And The Local Community Come Together In Clean-Up By: Bill Gallaway As you come upon the crest in the road at 1490 Moorefield in Sunset, SC where Bob’s Place once stood you could begin to smell the burnt ash of what used to be a landmark in its own right. Bob’s Place was also known as “Scatterbrains”. Bob’s Place was the oldest continuously operating bar in South Carolina, for at least 50 years, and was operated by Ms. Johnson, Bob’s widow. It wasn’t unusual to see a motorcycle or two or three parked in front or across the street as this is one of the roads on which cyclists enjoy riding for the twists, turns, and scenery. If you ride the foothills of the Upstate at all, you have definitely passed by, if not stopped in for a cold beverage. As of Memorial Day, the Pickens County, SC Sheriff’s Office was continuing its investigation into the cause of the fire. On Saturday, May 27, over a hundred neighbors, bikers, friends and strangers came together to help in the tremendous clean-up of the place that seemed like home to many that stopped in. Bob’s Place was that kind of place. You were only a stranger there once. Over the years, Bob’s Place was a stop

in just about every poker run that went from somewhere in the Upstate of SC to Rosman, NC. For right now it won’t be the same riding past and only time will tell what the future will bring. On Sunday morning, about 48 motorcycles met at the dealership and rode in three separate groups to Rockingham Dragway on Route 1 in Rockingham, NC. for a commemorative ceremony honoring the late, great legend, Ray Price, who raced there until he was 66 years old before turning the bike over to Tommy Grimes. Ray and his crew continued working the pits for the high-performance Harley nitro drag bike. Ray was the first to use a wheelie bar in motorcycle drag racing and also developed the two-speed automatic transmission allowing his motorcycle to break the 200 mph mark. In his honor, each member attending was given permission to take a memorial ride down the drag strip to pay their respects while Ms. Jean watched from the stands where she always sat to watch her husband and their team excel. The Rockingham event was definitely an emotional one. The three groups then left the dragway and rode to a Raleigh H.O.G. member’s home where we had a feast of chicken, fixin’s, and desert before each of us departed for home. I was glad to have been able to participate in all of the events over the course of the two days and look forward to what the future will bring both to the dealership and to the club. I thank Marc O’Grady and the planning team at Raleigh H.O.G., Kris Weiss and of course Ms. Jean Price from Ray Price Harley-Davidson as well as all those who planned and put together such a momentous weekend event.

www.Harley-DavidsonNewBern.com By: Andrea Gore The Wilmington chapter of Carolina Faith Riders had their first annual Benefit Fun Run April 29, 2017. This year’s event was a 1.5-hour long dice run. It was a beautiful morning and the event was truly blessed. There was over $1000 in cash and prizes donated by many of our local businesses and bike shops. Top prize being a $300 ladies leather riding jacket. The event also featured a pig picking with all the fixins’ prepared onsite as well as live music. The beneficiary of the event was Matthew 25 Center of Burgaw, NC. The Center is a non-profit Christian ministry located in Pender County, NC serving the hospitality needs of the families of inmates in area prisons and jails. The Center provides free accommodations and support to families who travel great distances to visit their loved ones in prison. CFR’s mission is to reach and minister to those in the motorcycle community with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. A message of this perfect love was brought by Eric Hutchins of Full Throttle Church and the event was held at Wrightsboro Baptist Church. The members of CFR rode on May 13 to deliver the check to Matthew 25 Center. It was a great joy to help this ministry and see the place where families in difficult circumstances can find rest and support.

By: Wally Wersching I was looking for a Memorial Day event close to home to attend. I read in the Shelby Star that there would be the Kings Mountain Annual Memorial Day event at the Veterans Monument in the Mountain Rest Cemetery at 10 am. I left home at 9 am. It was a cool and comfortable ride on Rte. 74. I was looking forward to honoring our fallen veterans. I arrived at the cemetery at about 9:20, and there were already a few people standing around in the shade. After I parked, I walked around the beautiful cemetery. Flags were placed on all the veteran’s graves. It was a very solemn sight. There was a gentle breeze so the flags were waving as I walked. At about 9:45 am, a group of bikers rolled in from the American Legion Riders in Kings Mountain. I talked with them for a short time, and gave them a copy of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine to share amongst themselves. The program was about to start. The theme for the ceremony was “All gave some… Some gave all”. The Loch Norman Pipers played their bagpipes to start the ceremony. They came all the way from Lake Norman, NC. They looked very Scottish in their kilts. After the Mayor of Kings Mountain spoke, the Kings Mountain Police Department honor guard presented the colors. Three ladies sang the Star Spangled Banner beautifully. Then it was time for the Key Speaker – Captain Frank Sincox, Medical Corps, USNR (Retired). He spoke about his heroes growing up. Then he started talking about the unseen heroes that gave their lives in battle so we could be free. It really made me think about how we are able to be free. Skylar Smith sang God Bless America before the Cadets from the Civil Air Patrol in Shelby presented the wreaths – one for each branch of the service. The pipers played another number, and then the KMPD Honor guard removed the colors. Then it was time for the Marine Corps League to fire the three volleys. The ceremony ended with the playing of Taps on the sound system. It was a very solemn ceremony in honor of our fallen veterans. I was glad that I had gone.

Bros & Bro-ettes, Have you ever had something happen in your life and you wonder why in the world it happened to you? It might have been good or bad. We always question things that happen and may not understand them, but it’s not our place to question God. We need only put our trust in Jesus Christ and follow Him. We may not like it sometimes, but He will never lead us down the wrong path. BUT if we decide to take it upon ourselves, it’s hard telling what we’ll do or where we would go. God has a reason for allowing things to happen to us. The Lord never said that we wouldn’t have problems in this life time, but he did say they wouldn’t last forever. We must remember our fights are not ours alone, they are the Lord’s if only we allow Him. Have you ever thought that what you’re going through is part of God’s plan for your life? I know we all have heard of or read Psalms 23. Verses 1-6 say: 1) The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. 2) He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3) He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness For His name sake. 4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5) You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; My cup overflows. 6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all

the days of my life, And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Has the Lord restored your soul? We need to step aside and let the Lord restore our souls. Jesus defeated Satan, but he still wants to kill and destroy you, however, he can’t. Reread verse 4. In verse 5 He gives us things. He uses the Holy Spirit to walk with us. We have nothing, but our cup overflows. In verse 6 It tells us we don’t have to die to dwell in Him, all we have to do is accept Him now. Praise Him and thank Him for what you have now. We don’t have to wander around and worry about tomorrow because the Lord will take care of us. People will tell you that they’ll always be by your side (yea right!), BUT the Lord will, because He is my shepherd. We were created to bring God’s word to the world. PGR Mission For William MacLaughlin By: Wally Wersching William MacLaughlin was 82 years old when he died. According to his wife of 49 years, Genevieve, he was a very patriotic man. He served in the Air Force Reserve for 16 years, and served his community as an auxiliary police officer, volunteer in the American Legion, worked with the cub scouts, and coached his sons in baseball, too. Genevieve is a veteran who served in the US Army many years ago. One son is serving in the military, and came to the funeral service in uniform. It sounds like it was a very devoted family. There was only one thing wrong; William is not technically a veteran. He didn’t serve on active duty. He cannot be buried in the Veterans Cemetery. The plan for him is that he be cremated, and buried in the cemetery next to the church. Veteran or not, he served his country, and the Patriot Guard Riders were there to honor him. I was notified by email of the upcoming mission on Saturday, June 3rd. There were many other events happening that day, but I was determined to be at William’s service. I left home on “Miss Vickie” at about 8 am. I pulled into the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church parking lot about 9:45 am.

It’s a beautiful church with the long grand staircase in front. I parked next to the only other bike, and walked to greet the other PGR member. I knew it was a little early, but there should have been more members there. The mission was supposed to start at 10 am. The two of us stood in front of the church waiting for more members to arrive. One by one, they arrived, but Robert, the mission leader with the flags, hadn’t arrived yet. We were getting a little worried. Robert is always early. Maybe something happened to him. Finally, he arrived with all the flags and stakes on his Victory motorcycle. He apologized for being late but he couldn’t go very fast with all the stuff on his bike. We quickly set up the flags around the church, and then stood a flag line. Two of us were by the front doors in the sun, and the other four were in the back in the shade where most of the people were arriving. There were a couple Air Force cadets who would perform the flag ceremony in the church. They looked so young. William’s family members and friends came out to thank us for coming, and took photos of us. We all had a very pleasant talk about William, and other veteran related topics. They invited us to stay for a meal after the service. We were notified that the service had started at about 11:15. That was our cue to stand down from the flag line, and quietly disperse. Some of the PGR members were going to stay and eat with the family and friends after the service while others were going to Marion, NC for another PGR mission later in the day. I said my good-byes, and headed south on Enola Road. I was honored that I could be there for William and his family when they really needed someone. I’ll keep checking my email for upcoming PGR missions in my area, and continue to be there for our veterans.

Cyclemania 2017 – All Kinds Of Cool Bikes

Story and photo by Alan Dockery I love all kinds of motorcycles and the people who ride them. The first Saturday afternoon in June at Cyclemania 2017 was a treat for riders like me. Gathered on the east side of Charlotte were bikes of many kinds from Aprilia to Zundapp, from Japan to Czechoslovakia. The back of a business park makes a nice place for a motorcyclist event because they usually have good parking with strips of grass and shade trees. The Cyclemania organizers are bikers and welcome everyone, so admission is free. They had vendors from big dealerships to small shops and other motorcycle related products. Good food plus cold beer and sodas were available. Charlotte’s Classic Rock station 99.7 The Fox was on site. There was a dyno trailer for guys who wanted to see if those

new pipes really made power. Superior Scale Inc. had a new game set up. You guess what your bike weighs with you on it. But it was checking out bikes and talking to riders that makes Cyclemania fun for me. I saw some of my old hardcore biker buddies there and talked to young hipster riders, too. It’s cool how two wheels can bring the tough guys and frail ladies together discussing details of an old machine. And there were a few old machines there I’d love to have in my garage. NC State Veterans Home Ride

By: Johnny Reb Bright and early on Saturday, May 27th, people in Goldsboro woke to the sound of thunder. The thundering sound was around 100 bikes ready to start their ride to the NC State Veterans Home in Kinston, NC. It was a beautiful sunny day and everyone was ready to ride. Now, I wish I could say that I went on the ride itself, however full disclosure is needed, That’s right, folks, I cheated. I left from Griffon and met everyone at the NC State Veterans Home so I could get some shots of all the bikes rolling in, and talk to a very nice man named Jack Strickland. Now Jack has been busy helping to set this ride up for the Veterans, he told me that to get the word out about Veterans concerns, he knew that the biker community was where he needed to go. Veteran causes will always motivate bikers to come out and participate. I don’t know the exact figures and I’m sure that there is some expert out there that does know the figures, but I’ll bet that veterans make up 80% of the biker community. The Elks Club is who set this all up. Jack Strickland is a 25-year member, so he knows the who’s who of Elks. Well, one member that he knew was Frank Morrow. Frank is the President of the Wayne County chapter of the Ghost Riders MC. Jack told Frank what he wanted to do and Frank got it done! Frank got a hold of a

newer member of the Elks, Doug Miller, now Doug is in the Guardian Brotherhood MC. When you get these guys all working together things happen, so the run and event went great. The Veterans seemed happy to get out and check out all the cool bikes that were lined up outside. The bikers seemed happy talking to the veterans and listening to some great stories. It really was a win for everybody. I would suggest to all of y’all out there, if you haven’t been to the NC Veterans Home in Kinston, stop in check it out. See if you can help in anyway. Just take a minute and talk to these veterans, you will make such a difference in their day. Besides all that, you will hear history from the men and women who made that history first hand. I must admit that the last time I visited a Veterans Home, I was in the Marines. From now on I will make the time, because those folks made the time to protect our rights. First Ever Community Ride And Rally By: Kathy Shoaf “Do you want to go take the motorcycle safety course and learn how to ride a motorcycle?” I’ll never forget the day those words came out of my brothers mouth. Jeff, my brother, has a quick wit and a dry sense of humor. When he asked me that, I thought he was joking. My reply was, “Not really, it’s not something I had ever thought of doing.” Then I realized he was serious. I told him let me think about it. I was not working at the time, had some money but didn’t know how long it would last. The thought of learning how to ride was scary, BUT, I had learned how to drive a school bus a month or two before that. Jeff has done a lot with me. He tends to open my eyes. After thinking about it I decided, “Why not? Why not learn and add it to the list of afterthought bucket list things I’ve done that

were not on the bucket list”. I told Jeff I’d do it. He signed us and our brother up for the class. Mike didn’t get to go with us but did go later. Now, two years later and I can’t imagine life without my motorcycle. Between me and my brothers, I’m the one that has rode the most. I live in Stokes County, NC. The scenic countryside and curvy roads are great for motorcycle riding. I noticed every weekend there are lots of bikes coming into the area. I own a small business and I’m a member of the King Chamber of Commerce. I went to the Chamber and asked if we could do an event with motorcycles. There are car shows all over the place but I hadn’t heard of any motorcycle specific shows. I told them I wanted to do something community oriented, show people that there are some really nice folks riding

motorcycles, and that they give to the community. A committee was set up to get everything rolling. We got American Legion Post 290 involved. The event was set up as a benefit for the American Legion and was held at the Legion. There would be a ride, vendors, food, and free music. The day was set for April 22. Once we set the date, the true work began. We encouraged everybody to spread the word, posters were made and we started contacting prospective sponsors. The weather had been so mild this year. My thought was, “Just wait, I bet anything it will snow”. People would say, “It’s not going to snow, it never snows in April”. I remember it snowing in April and the reason I remember is because I’d go out and cut the tulips and daffodils so they wouldn’t freeze. There was also the threat of rain. Everything started falling into place. Posters were “Just wait, I bet being posted all over the anything it will place. Prospective snow” sponsors were talked with and signed up. A variety of vendors were signing up. The time was drawing nearer and things were looking good. Finally, the day is here! Vendors started setting up, riders were rolling in, and it wasn’t raining. I signed up for the ride and wondered around taking pictures. I was so excited, my first group ride, and my first motorcycle rally. Kick stands were going up at 10am. Right before 10 we had an introduction, prayer, pledge of allegiance, and talked about how to ride in a group. Then came the big moment, “Riders, mount up!” There was a total of 43 motorcycles. Harleys, Suzukis, Triumphs, Indians, BMWs, Hondas and Can Am Spyders were all present. The route we rode was scenic, just long enough and everybody seem to enjoy it. As we were coming back, we came through a butterfly shower. Jeff said I was hallucinating, but I had other riders to confirm it. Thankfully, that was the only kind of shower we had. The rain held off until the event was ending. As the riders came back into the American Legion, the motorcycles were staged around the drive so everyone could admire them. Door prizes had been donated and there was enough for all the riders. Everyone collected their prize, ate, and perused the vendors. We had a nice variety of vendors. Anything from non-profits like BAC (Bikers Against Child Abuse) Guardians of The Children, small businesses like Peter’s Keys and Marbella’s Cupcakes, Highway State Troopers, the Victory Drag Racing Team and Indian Motorcycle Greensboro, Muses Chop House, just to name a few. I’d like to thank all our sponsors, vendors, plus the town of King for allowing us to have this event, the King Chamber for making it happen and the American Legion for partnering with us. The event was considered a huge success and will be held again next April. All of you are invited, bring the family, come to beautiful Stokes County and make a day of it!

Johnny Paul “Junior” Needham, Jr. 9/28/42 – 6/1/17 Junior Needham was known throughout the motorcycle community. He was a member of Randolph County CBA and attended many motorcycle events in the Carolinas. It seemed like almost every event that we attended, Junior would pop up to greet us with his trademark smile. He and his wife “Dottie” have been riding motorcycles for decades. They were regulars at The Handlebar Corral “Thunder In The Smokies” rally in Maggie Valley and participated in the biker games until this spring when Junior’s health began to deteriorate. I believe that they were the oldest couple in the Needle In The Haystack and Weenie Bite games and Junior usually did really well against young men half his age in the Slow Race. If Dottie wasn’t with Junior, his friend, Paul Shaw was. They always took time to tell me stories about adventures that they had recently and in the past. I would hesitate to call Junior a hellion, but I am certain that he was a rounder back then. Sometimes Junior would call me just to talk and would always finish by saying, “I didn’t mean to bother

you.” I always told him it was no bother and it was a pleasure to talk with him, and it was. I will miss those calls. On June 4th, about 25 friends on their motorcycles escorted Junior and his family to his temporary resting place in the cemetery of Asbury Baptist Church. Junior is survived by his loving wife of 53 ½ years, Lavon “Dottie” Canoy Needham; daughter, Gena Parker and husband Adam of Asheboro; sons, Johnny Needham, III of Asheboro, Jason Needham and wife Jillian of Asheboro; seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Ella, and Eden Needham, Mackenzie Parker, Ethan, Evan, and Elijah Needham. We will miss seeing Junior at every event we attend, but we know he will be there in spirit. Until we meet again in heaven, Junior, ride on.

Go Ahead And Judge Me By: Ranger Joe Cranford I think of myself as a regular motorcycle enthusiast with an affliction for older bikes. The fact that the bike I learned to ride on, a 1966 Honda C110, is 51 years old is a little hard to process mentally. I have been a member of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) for 8 years and was so excited when the Southern National Meet at the Denton Farm Park in Denton, North Carolina was announced in 2010 because it is only a 30-minute drive from my house. I’ve participated in the field games and Concourse D’Ordinaire at the Southern National and had a lot of fun, but I wondered what it would be like to have a bike judged Sunday morning with the really nice bikes. My concern was that I didn’t have a bike that would fit in. I have regular guy’s bikes – Harleys, Yamahas, Hondas, and Ossas. These bikes have been ridden hard and are not exotic like an Excelsior or truly vintage like older Harleys or Indians. I read through the AMCA Handbook of Judging and I started checking off the judging basics to see if I had a bike that qualified for the Original bike category. Things were looking up. When I got to judging basic #17: Original condition motorcycles are expected to have faded or worn painted surfaces, scratches and other signs of wear commensurate with their age/mileage. Another “Why did I wait box checked off! so long to get a Judging basic #18 sealed the deal. Owners are bike judged?” encouraged to ENJOY their motorcycles for their intended use, and for the purpose of judging the motorcycle can show signs of operation such as road film, bugs, oil smears, fuel stains, or grease and oil splatter from the drive. I preregistered in the Original class and eagerly anticipated the Southern National Meet. When I got to Denton, I spoke with several members of the AMCA about what to expect when a bike is judged. A special thanks to Louie Hale for spending time with me explaining the bike judging procedure. It helped a great deal. Sunday morning was here and it was time to put my 1977 Honda CT70 in the big room for judging. I walked the bike in the room around 8 am and waited for instructions. I was admiring the incredible motorcycles on display – Excelsiors, Nortons, Indians, and I locked in on Doug Wothke’s 1916

Indian. Boy, did I feel out of my league! I came back after a couple of hours to find my bike judged. The waiting continued for the results. The judging was completed around noon and it was time for the awards. I did not expect my little Honda to receive an award, this was just going to be my opportunity to have the bike scrutinized and to find out what the bike’s shortcomings are. What a shock, at 98.5 out of a possible 100 points, the Honda received a Junior First rank that came with a beautiful Judging History Plaque. I was beyond surprised and pleased. The judging sheet was returned and it broke down the deductions point by point. I understood them all and could see the possibility of correcting them. As I rode my bike back to the truck I was thinking, “Why did I wait so long to get a bike judged?” It was a great experience. Now it’s your turn to get your bike judged!

She asked if I knew what the beeper was for. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, “what on earth are blind people doing driving?!” She is a government employee.

While attending a Marriage Weekend, Frank and his wife, Ann, listened to the instructor declare, “It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.” He then addressed the men. “Can you name and describe your wife’s favorite flower?” Frank leaned over, touched Ann’s arm gently, and whispered, “Gold Medal-All-Purpose, isn’t it?” And thus, began Frank’s life of celibacy.

My daughter and I went through the McDonald’s driveup window and I gave the cashier a $5 bill. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her 25c. She said, “you gave me too much money.” I said, “Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar coin back.” She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed me back the 25c, and said, “We’re sorry but we don’t do that kind of thing.” The cashier then proceeded to give me back 75 cents in change. Do not confuse the people at Mickey D’s.

She turned to her class and said, “Michael, if you were on a date having dinner with a nice young lady, how would you tell her that you have to go to the bathroom?” Michael said, “Just a minute, I have to go pee.” The teacher responded by saying, “Well, that would be rude and impolite.
