T

he other day, I stepped out in the back yard and heard a neighbor down the street loudly proclaim, “It sure is hot out here!” It was only in the mid 80s. I rode to an event and everyone was crowded up under a canopy trying to escape the heat. It was in the mid 80s. I remember riding when the sweat would run down your back while running 70 mph and WildThing actually burnt her butt on her seat after her bike sat out in the sun. It was in the mid to upper 90s and to top it off the event we were going to was a dinner and draw down bike raffle with 100 others in a building whose A/C had died! Man it was HOT! Now, I am not claiming to be a martyr, but, c’mon, it is finally summer time! It is time to ride and enjoy the heat. I have heard people complain about all types of weather. It’s too cold, it might rain, and I even had one guy tell me that it was too windy to ride! I do not know about you, but when I ride there is always a 40-80mph wind in my face. So suck it up and get out there and enjoy motorcycling. It is an outdoor activity. There are multiple event choices for every weekend in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar or online at FullThrottleMagazine. com. Or you can go get some of those red, yellow, and green shoes and hang out in the bowling alley. It’s air-conditioned and it NEVER rains in the bowling alley!

Ride To Support A Friend By: Rose and Lloyd Randy Small is known by many for his love and compassion for whomever he meets. He is the first to volunteer to go on a charity ride, and the last to walk away when a friend needs help. Unfortunately, it was Randy in need this time. He has been suffering for months with his legs and feet swelling, to the point of extreme pain and unable to walk at times. His medical doctor would give him antibiotics, but he needed to see a specialist, a very expensive vascular specialist. With only his wife, Angie, able to work, and no insurance, or help through Medicaid this was out of the question. His friends and extended family Mary Barnes, Alan Hethcox, Lloyd Luquer, and Cliff Lemons decided it was time to step up and help. So the Ride to Support A Friend came about on May 24th. Money was raised and donations were collected. Lloyd planned out a beautiful route leaving The American Legion Post #87 in High Point, through back roads of Randolph County. It was beautiful, through Caraway and country roads, a biker’s dream ride with lots of scenery and nice curves. The destination was R LO’s Pub and Grub in Thomasville. Many gave of their time and money and opened their hearts

for Randy. So many that it is impossible to list them all, but a few went above and beyond. A special Thank you to Randy Louya of R Lo’s for the donation of all the meat served, and Lloyd for cooking. Lisa Kennedy for providing all the slaw and potato salad and Cliff Lemons for getting the rolls. Many gave money contributions, a special Thank you to Eanes Heating and Air, Varner, United Riders, Mommy and Me, D&M Vapors, Skylar Mae, and Buck’s towing. There is no way to list all the raffle donations, so please just know all were greatly appreciated. There was a 50/50 and a raffle with many great prizes. Randal Fulbright with some handsome little helpers, Landon and Logan Brooks, conducted the raffle and 50/50. Cliff Lemons won the 50/50 and gave the money to Randy. All in all it was a beautiful ride on a beautiful day for a cause that brought many participants. A huge “thank you” to everyone that helped or came out and supported a wonderful person. Randy has been able to see the specialist and with your love and support is getting the medical attention he desperately needs. This once again proves, when one of our family is in need, there are angels everywhere.

Salute The Soldiers

By: Caroline When Kenny Gilley at Clemmons Motorcycles in Clemmons, NC told me about this benefit ride they were hosting, I was intrigued. I arrived at Clemmons Motorcycles on Saturday afternoon, May 24th to join 50 motorcyclists on a ride to the National Cemetery in Salisbury. Before we headed out, I got a chance to talk to David Boyd to find out more about this venture. David told me that every year he would go out to the National Cemetery with his mom and dad to put flowers on his grandfather’s grave, who served as a Marine during World War II. Sadly, David’s father, Dan Boyd, passed away unexpectedly last October. When this Memorial weekend came up, David came up with an idea to honor not only his dad’s memory, but also everyone who served in the military. He told me that his Dad loved motor-

cycles, America, and his military background, so he decided to share the tradition that had been started by his own family. Anyone who wanted to ride was invited to ride to Salisbury to place flowers on the graves. No fee was required to ride, however, donations provided flowers from Flowers For The Fallen that folks placed on as many graves as possible. Thanks to the Boyd family for sharing their tradition with the community and making this the beginning of a new Memorial weekend tradition.

R.I.P. Mark Stephen Whitescarver

By: dpapabear A special weekend for a devoted couple attending the Boone Bike Rally ended tragically on Saturday morning, May 31st. Mark and Dawn Whitescarver were married during the Boone Bike Rally on Friday, May 30th, witnessed by their extended biker family and friends. Their faces were all aglow with happiness and excitement. They seemed to be happiest when on their bikes or anything associated with the biker community. Dawn and Mark were from the same neighborhood and had reconnected about 10 years ago when Mark came into Dawn’s place of employment and started up a conversation. They had been together the last 4 years and Dawn stated, “It’s been awesome ever since”. Mark proposed to her last fall with plans to marry at the rally this spring. Mark and Dawn were both members of the Virginia Chapter of The Patriot Guard Riders where he served as a Road Captain, former Assistant State Captain, and continued to be an active member supporting the veterans, specially the POW and MIA missions. A Veteran – whether Active Duty, Retired, National Guard or Reserve, who served and Honorably Discharged – is someone who at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to “The United States of America for an amount of up to including my life”. Let us NOT FORGET the price of FREEDOM! Dawn stated, “My very loving husband, best friend, and love of my life past away due to a massive heart attack”. He was a giving person and good friend to many and will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. Our thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences go out to his new wife Dawn, their families, friends and co-workers!

Bikers For Bikers Foundation Benefit Ride

By: Mark (Stretch) Carlyle On June 1st the Bikers For Bikers Foundation Benefit Ride took off from Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson in Hickory, NC. I was unable to join the fun at the beginning, but I sure enjoyed meeting everyone that ended up at Twin Oaks Sports Bar & Grill in Denver, NC. I got there before all the bikes rolled in. The band was setting up on the new outdoor patio and bar that Russell built this past winter. When the bikes rolled in, the grill out back was smoking up the neighborhood. The band, All of A Kind, was rippin it up outside playing all different genres of music. These guys had the patio rockin’. This was a special day for everyone supporting each other, especially our service men and women! I had the chance not only to thank them and shake their hand but we had several cold beers on the patio and jam! We had the chance to meet a lot of great people at Twin Oaks Sports Bar & Grill inside and out. Russell and the staff will make you happy, with in reason! LOL! Thanks to all that showed their support for the Bikers For Bikers Foundation. If you’re in the area or looking for a cool place to go to, stop in at Twin Oaks bar. Tell Russell and the staff that The Carolinas’ Full Throttle FU LL THROTTLE Magazine sent you there!!

Tricked Out By: Mark (Stretch) Carlyle Trick 1 Customs (Trick1Custom.com) opened the doors in 2005. There was one goal that Wade had in is head - customer service! As Wade, his wife Catrina, and several family members built the business on N. Aspen Street in Lincolnton, NC, the business took off when people found out that Trick 1 Customs delivered more than the customer expected. They had no choice but move to a bigger facility on Hwy 321 Bus. In 2008, when they economy took a crap on all of us, Wade changed over to doing parts and customizing everything he could, painting everything from airplanes to custom bikes. When I say everything there’s probably a farm tractor in Lincoln County, NC that has a hidden signature somewhere on it! Trick 1 Customs has painted thru 3 generations of customers. They have a full staff of qualified mechanics, paint and body men, and a very knowledgeable counter staff. So if you’re in they area with any need on your vehicle, whether it’s a Farmall tractor or a Learjet, Trick 1 Customs is the place to get it done. Trick 1 Customs has asked us to send out their heart felt gratitude to the community in Lincoln County and surrounding areas for supporting them and bringing them more and more work. Just stop by 1924 Gastonia Hwy in Lincolnton, NC or check them out on Facebook and say “Hello!” and be sure to tell them The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine sent you!

THURSDAY BIKE NIGHT $1 Bud Lights • 45¢ Wings

By: dpapabear Saturday, June 14, the Sons of AMVETS Post 13 of Lexington, NC held their annual poker run event day. The event consists of a poker run, door prizes donated by lots of area businesses, 50/50, an auction, food, party, and live music. The weather was perfect riding weather for the run with stops at Post 3006 in Salisbury, Post 845 in Rockwell, then down thru the country side around High Rock lake, across behind the dam and back up Hwy 8 to Post 17, AKA Little Bar, in Southmont, finishing up back at Post 13. Once back, the Ladies Auxiliary served the food and then the door prizes were drawn and everyone there received one. The auction was completed, and the 50/50 winner was drawn. In addition to the main 50/50, there were also 50/50 tickets sold and a winner drawn at every stop with some winners taking $100 pot. Live music was then provided into the evening in the bar area. There were 17 bikes in the ride with several cages as well and some other supporters that did not ride the poker run showing up at the Post for the evening events. Overall the day brought in a fair crowd and raised monies to help the AMVETS Post fund their charity endeavors thru out the year. Bikers and Biker associated groups do a lot all year long to help support sometimes some of the less fortunate to have a more normal life, whether it’s for medical reasons, Christmas for the kids, or whatever reason to help someone. We would like to give a great big THANK YOU to all the area merchants, businesses and individuals who donated goods for the event and to each one who came out in support! So if you missed the event this year, watch the The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for next year’s dates. As always, ride safe. Hope to see more of you at the next one.

The 75th Anniversary Of Myrtle Beach Bike Week

By: Everette “EZ” Short It’s hard to believe that Myrtle Beach Bike Week has been rocking the sands of South Carolina since 1939, but this year’s event had the strongest showing of riders since 2008, with an estimated 200,000 plus participants. Murrells Inlet was the biggest winner and Suck, Bang & Blow packed them in for more than a week with parking being hard to come by for most of those days. Everywhere we went the lots were full up and down King’s Highway, filling the Strand all the way up to Little River and beyond. With only one day of rain, the ground has been shaking from the sound of motorcycles for the past two weeks. Right now, it’s quiet as I write this, but we’re just waiting for the next wave of bikes to come in for The Atlantic Beach Bike Week Festival. On the north end, from Wednesday afternoon and on into the next morning, The Swingbridge Saloon set the tone for a raging week with a Welcome Home Party that included live music, karaoke on the back deck and a free pig pickin’ from Dem Boyz BBQ’n. All I can tell you is that by the end of the night there was a lot of dancing going on. On Thursday, the much-awaited 2nd Annual GOAT Run started at The House of Blues and eventually led riders to the Speedway for a parade lap around the track. Even

under wet conditions, The GOAT Run was a rain soaked success with Buck Cherry taking the stage at The MB Speedway, just before sundown. The next day, The SC Biker’s Hall of Fame Ride was greeted with bright sunshine and blue skies. In the middle of Myrtle proper, the watering hole winners included Dog House Donny’s Saloon and Barnacle Bill’s Raw Bar. Both of these bars looked like they were basking in the glory of the good old days, with overfilled lots of big time custom bikes, leathered up honeys in every direction and crowds of burly bikers sitting both inside and out. At the edge of town, Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson stayed as busy as an ant colony, with no empty bar stools and standing room only at The City Line Saloon, just across the street. Before you could catch your breath, the week was put to bed by a super blowout party on Saturday night at Suck, Bang & Blow where my personal favorite band, Rebel Son, blistered their fingers and the audience with their bodacious songs from the South. Meanwhile, at The Rockin’ Hard Saloon, Power Born Rebellion, featuring the incomparable Eric Ness, kicked the mood into a frenzied overdrive of wild abandon, with several late night encores. The Dead Dog Saloon and The Crooked Floor Tavern were packed as well. In the end, I only heard of two fatalities and a couple of fender benders. Everyone I saw was having the time of their lives and there were smiles up and down all the miles. Good job everybody and stop in your favorite watering holes or bike shops while you’re down here for a free copy of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. You might even be in this very issue! Look on-line at www.fullthrottlemagazine.com for more pix from days we will never forget. For those of you who woke up and couldn’t remember the night before, it may just be a good thing.

25 Years Of Service

By: Ken Carrick and Mark Infield Jim’s Motor Service is a motorcycle shop in High Point run by Jim Blair. I remember when I was introduced to Jim in 1997 thinking, “Now, this is a motorcycle shop!” There are no neon lights or dressing rooms. Instead there is a milling machine, a lathe, a press, and other tools necessary to repair motorcycles. There is little room to walk around between the machinery and the bikes that are there for repairs. If you want to visit, you do it standing amongst these items. There is no lounge. What you get at Jim’s is personal service and attention to your bike’s problems by the owner, himself. Jim specializes in repairing and rebuilding Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He is no stranger to Flatheads, Knucks, Pans, Iron Heads, Shovels, Evos, and race bikes. He works on them all. Jim is a perfectionist. He is a machinist as well and if he works on it, it will be fixed right. Jim has been in business since 1989 and while, I doubt that Jim had any plan to celebrate, his friends did! Ken Carrick, owner of DeadPartsMC in Danbury, NC gathered enough parts to build a beautiful Dyna Wide Glide and presented it to Jim at the AMCA Southern National Swap Meet in Denton, NC on Friday, May 16th. An unsuspecting Jim Blair came to Denton Farm Park for the AMCA Southern National Swap Meet with the intentions of finding some parts for customers that have old bikes. Putting up on his old shovelhead, Jim spies his wife, Sue, a wonderful lady who works 364 days a year and would not think of taking off work, and then he sees his boys who spend almost 365 days a year in school. First words out of his mouth were, “What are you doing here? Is everything OK?” With a whole family grinning ear to ear, Jim realizes no one has died and he can relax. They are there to surprise Jim and celebrate with him when he receives a reproduction 1985 FXWG built specifically for Jim by his friends and customers to say “Thank You” for all he has done for so many, for so many years. Sue and the kids all huddled around Jim and like a swarm of love bugs they seem to lift and float Jim around swap meet and into a building where a “like new” 1985 FXWG is hiding under a cover waiting to jump out and ambush Jim with eye punishing sheen.

29

The bike is covered with a congratulatory banner. It read: Congratulations on 25 years of honesty, integrity, and old fashioned reliable service. This bike is for you. Jim stood in front of banner with Sue and the kids around him in total disbelief and amazement. Stop. Take a picture. Done. Over the top. Good enough. It could have ended right there. The bike was adorned with Jim’s Motor Service logos on the air cleaner, timing cover, derby cover, dash, and windshield. Saturday, while it was starting to sink in, Jim still expressed astonishment at the whole idea and stared, glassy-eyed at the black Wide Glide glistening in the sunlight. In today’s society it seams like hard work and treating folks like you would want to be treated doesn’t go very far. It doesn’t get you on TV. It doesn’t get you publicity and large gestures don’t make it to your family or your friends. It turns out, it doesn’t have to be that way. It doesn’t take TV crews, corporate donors, permits, and Oprah to think and give big. It only takes a few willing contributors and a worthy recipient. Jim’s friends and customers proved that with a deserving recipient like Jim Blair, finding willing helpers is no problem. A wheel from this guy, a seat from that guy, a Thursday night here, a weekend there, 8 months and a willingness to give back, and voilà, you have done something big for someone that deserves it. Who helped? Who painted it? Who built the motor? Who would do such a thing? Part of the answer is Jim Blair. Quite a bit of this bike, a part here, a part there, was worked on by Jim without his knowledge of who it was for. Parts were purchased for this bike from Jim also without knowledge of the end user. The other part of the answer is, friends and customers (who are one and the same) of Jim Blair. All of which, in sticking to the true spirit of giving, would like to remain anonymous, but would like to invite everyone to come check out Jim’s Motor Service in High Point, see the bike, meet the man worthy of such a gift, and check out for yourself Jim’s old fashioned reliable service. It has been our pleasure to know Jim for the past 15 years. We have trusted him with our motorcycles for service and repairs and appreciate his care and expertise. If you have old Harley-Davidson iron that needs some attention, you can call Jim at 336-889-4047 or drop by 1506 Potts Avenue in High Point, NC and meet Jim and see what a motorcycle shop used to look like.

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson 5th Anniversary Party

By: Caroline If any of you were around Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in April or May of this year, you know that there was a lot of excitement generated by their raffle of a 2014 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. The big day was Saturday, May 17th and lots of folks were on hand, to enjoy the big celebration commemorating Smokin’ Harley-Davidson’s 5th anniversary. There was food, vendors, and drawings for prizes throughout the day. Also, the Carolina Cowboys entertained the crowd with some live music. The event was also hosted by the popular radio personalities from Rock 92 Chris Demm, Chris Kelly, Lady D and, of course, Biggie was there to celebrate his 5th anniversary with the radio team - hence the name of the event, “Fat Boy from a fat boy. “ Around 3pm that afternoon, the suspense had mounted to an extreme level as 10 names were drawn from the entries. Each of these folks got a key. Each had an opportunity to see if their key would start the bike. Talk about a heart stopping moment! But, as there can only be one winner, it was soon evident who that was. A hearty congratulations to Curtis Sells! As I talked to him afterwards, you could tell he was still in a daze but rushed off to take care of claiming his awesome prize. I heard from the many folks who attended this day that they enjoy coming to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson for these special events because they simply have such a great time here. Be

sure and check by Smokin’ for more events and fun times this year. They are located at 3441 Myer Lee Drive (I-40 Bus. At Exit 10) in Winston-Salem. You can also find out more about them at www.SmokinHarley.com and their events in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar.

Jesse James Dupree At The House Of Blues By: Andy Fant I grew up a few doors down from Jesse James Dupree and his family in Acworth, GA, which is about 25 miles north at Atlanta. I can’t remember him not wanting to be in the music business. He told me when I was about 14 or so that one day he would have a big career in Rock and Roll. As with most teenagers, if they told you such a thing, you would think, yeah, right, but with Jesse he just had that drive. Even in his youth he always had the talent, so it was just kind of matter of fact. Well, he was right. He did make it in Rock and Roll and so much more. He is a good man, and everyone back home is very proud to see our neighbor and friend do so well and let the whole world see how talented Jesse is. If he is close by to Charleston, SC, where I live now, I try to touch base with him and this past weekend the Full Throttle Saloon was set up at House Of Blues in Myrtle Beach. When my Charleston HOG Chapter arrived Saturday, I called and he was able to hang out and visit for a while and meet some of my fellow HOG brothers and sisters. What a great afternoon hanging out with him, sampling his Jesse James line of liquor.

By Scott Wicker I always love to make the ride down Hwy 62 South through Level Cross then down to the town of Randleman. May 3rd and 4th the Twisted Throttle Saloon held their spring version of Rally in Randleman. A lot was going on outside with vendors selling clothing, leather goods, jewelry, electronic cigarettes, patches, stickers, food, and more! Twisted Ink Tattoo set up with t-shirts and piercings. The Throttle Girls were serving up Jell-O shots and the outside bar with Brandi and Maggie served cold beer with mixed drinks concocted at the inside bar by Amanda. Popular, as always, was the bikini bike wash with Allison and Candace doing the honors cleaning bikes for quite a few patrons and interested spectators. Heather and Renea were working the grill and were slinging Jell-O shots as well. There also was a benefit ride to the Victory Junction Gang Camp with over 35 bikes participating. The Randleman Police Department graciously gave a safe escort from Victory Junction Gang Camp back to the Twisted Throttle. The Mayor of Randleman, Bucky Jernigan, was on site to greet the folks and check out all the goings on. $650 was raised for Victory Junction with an additional $250 collected in the donation tire. Lot of nice bikes turned out for the bike show on Saturday. As usual, the live entertainment was a big hit with South Whiskey Road playing on the outdoor stage and Black Glass playing inside for the 9pm show. There’s no doubt it was a fun filled weekend to say the least. We want to thank Terri, Tim, and the staff for their hospitality and for having such a great event. Stop by and see them Tuesday through Sunday at 1006 S. Main Street in Randleman. Remember! There is always something happening at the Throttle. Ride Safe!

5th Annual AMCA Southern National Meet

Story and Photos by Alan Dockery What a beautiful weekend we had in the middle of May for the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Southern National Meet. This makes five years they have come to Denton Farm Park, NC, to let y’all see, hear, touch, and smell the history of motorcycling. Not only were there lots of cool old bikes to check out, but there were plenty of bikes and parts for sale, too. The AMCA meet is mainly a Friday and Saturday event. For y’all who want to check out the meet and activities you can

ride in Saturday morning. Sunday is when they judge the bikes seeking national recognition. It seems that as folks see what goes on at the AMCA Swap Meet at Denton there are more who come for the weekend and set up camp on Friday. That gives them more time for checking out the vendors. Camping at Denton Farm Park is nice with acres of cool, shady woods. I know you can buy everything online these days, but a real swap meet still has its advantages. Online you hope the part is what they claim and what you need. Buying in person at Denton you can examine the part, haggle with the seller and sometimes get an interesting story too. Bob Aton, AMCA Meet Chairman, says people love coming to North Carolina and often brag about our meet. “They tell me what a laid back meet it is and how much they appreciate our Southern hospitality,” he said. This year, the National Event Director, Rick Najera, said Denton Farm Park is the coolest venue for an antique motorcycle meet. The old buildings and antique farm equipment enhance the atmosphere. I hope he had the big fried bologna sandwich, a sweet potato fried pie, and Cheerwine for lunch. Saturday’s activities started with a ride through the country to Gold Hill. Soon after, the historic women’s club, Motor Maids entered the park and cruised around the grounds. One of the coolest features of the AMCA meet is the History In Motion narrated parade of antique motorcycles. Riders line up

and wait their turn to pull up to a spot, surrounded by folks, while each bike is described. This year Fred Davis, National Director of Chapters/Consumer Affairs, narrated the parade. Each year there are theme bikes on display. This year’s theme was race bikes and featured several cool old Harleys and Indians. Some of them were in the parade so we got to hear about the men who wrestled them around old flat tracks. After lunch the crowd moved to the field games area. You should have seen the guys competing on old bikes with foot clutches and hand shifters. It was amazing how well some guys can ride those old machines. After the games, bikes pulled in for the Concourse D’Ordinaire, a bike show for the common bike. Any bike could enter as long as it was old and ran. This is a cool little show with awards for things like Least Chrome, Most Rustic, Least Paint, Most Cobbled, and Most Sordid. Saturday evening’s banquet had a very interesting speaker, Round The World Doug Wothke. He did a fantastic job describing his trips abroad on his bikes. He rode around the world in 2009 on a 1962 Pan Head chopper. He told of various trips all over the world including riding a 2003 Sportster around the Black Sea and visiting Russia. He talked about riding 5000 miles on the Trans America Trail, an off road route from Tennessee to Oregon on a Tour Glide with a side car! The slide

presentation he provided was top notch. He will be participating the 2014 Cannonball III Endurance Run for pre 1937 bikes this year on a 1929 H-D JD bobber. Doug has been around the world four times on a motorcycle and made many other challenging rides. Doug enthralled the crowd with just a taste of the stories he could tell. Folks sat in silent disbelief during his 45-minute presentation. More details on his trips are on his website motosapiens.org. The AMCA Southern National Swap Meet has become the Carolinas’ event you really should attend if you are into the history of motorcycles. Attendees can check out historic

machines and spend hours talking to many of the guys who saved and restored them. You will see some of the oldest motorcycles running and rideable. You can buy bikes and parts to start your own project. Motorcycles 35 years old are considered antiques, so that now includes the imports many of us grew up riding. Yes, there are lots of Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, Nortons, and the bikes we are used to seeing at antique meets. But the Japanese bikes and parts vendors are increasing, too. Many of us have fond memories of those machines. The AMCA Southern National meet is not a snobby gathering of guys with high-dollar antiques. It is for you and that clean old machine you found in a shed or the ratty project bike you’d rather ride than restore. Come join us next year at Denton Farm Park for the AMCA Southern National Swap Meet. Admission is $10 for the weekend and event shirts, pins, etc. are available. Why Motorcyclists Can’t Afford To Just Sit Back And Enjoy The Ride There are many different things that draw people to motorcycling. For some it is the sense of freedom. For others it is a source of relaxation. It can also be a source of exhilaration. If you are like me, it is to some degree all of the above. That being said, it is the ride that we crave regardless of what each of us gets from it. This time of year the roads are packed with motorcyclists who are sitting back (or forward) and just enjoying the ride. That begs the question; can we as avid motorcyclists afford to do that? this month I had the privilege of riding to Frisco, Colorado to attend the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) Best Of The West Conference. For those who have been to Colorado you know that it is some of the prettiest riding country you will ever encounter. Yet on a gorgeous Saturday in June, I found myself not on my bike riding the Rockies, but in a room with motorcyclists from around the country discussing issues riders are facing all around the United States. The following is a list of some of the issues that were being addressed by the participants: • Working to prevent motorcyclists from being excluded from public parking lots, roads, and parking garages. • Working to eliminate roadside checkpoints aimed only at motorcyclists. • Working to address the ever-growing problem of distracted driving. • Working to prohibit the use of higher ethanol blends at the pump until the effects on motorcycle engines can be further studied. • Working for legislation allowing motorcyclists to safely and reasonably proceed when they are stuck at a traffic light that will not recognize them. • Working to prevent legislation which arbitrarily sets age restrictions for passengers on motorcycles. • Working with state and local governments to promote sensible motorcycle awareness campaigns. All of these are real issues being faced by real riders. As I took in everything being discussed I thought to myself, what would riding be like if there were no one addressing these issues on behalf of motorcyclists? The answer was chilling. It is easy to sit back, enjoy the ride, and count on everything being all right. But can we afford to do that? If we all did, we may soon find no ride left to sit back and enjoy. So what can you do to protect yourself and the activity that we all love and cherish? Take some simple steps to become involved in protecting the rights of fellow motorcyclists. I am not suggesting that everyone start riding all over the country attending seminars (although it is a great excuse to ride all over the country). You can get involved locally. Start pay-

ing attention to the positions that your local, state and federal legislators take regarding issues affecting motorcyclists. Share your thoughts in letters and emails. Write letters to the editor of your local paper. Go to City Council or County Board meetings. Join a motorcycle rights organization and attend their lobby day, where motorcyclists go the State Capitol to discuss issues important to us with elected officials. I would also encourage you to join the MRF. This is an organization dedicated solely to protecting the rights of American motorcyclists. You can learn more and join at mrf.org. There are numerous ways to protect your rights as a motorcyclist. The ways are limitless, bound only by your passion and imagination. There is, however, a wrong way and that is to count on someone else to do it. That someone else may be sitting back, enjoying the ride, and counting on you. If you have any questions or comments concerning this article or any other matters concerning your rights as a motorcyclist, please feel free to contact me at 1-800-321-8968 or at matt@motorcyclelawgroup.com. Kenda’s Wish Photos by: GypsyRose By: GypsyRose Saturday, May 17th was a great day for a wish and a poker run. The day started with registration at 8:30 in front of D & Q Motorsports in Angier, NC and kickstands were up at 10:00. Kenda’s wish originated in December of 2007. Kenda Eckles was born in September of 1981 to Gary and Linda Eckles and 16 hours after being born she started having trouble breathing. Kenda was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy and WolffParkinson-White syndrome (WPW). She spent a lot of time in and out of UNC after her parents moved to NC. In 2000 she suffered a stroke and it was finally time for a transplant. Her last test before being on the transplant list was scheduled for July 31, 2001. Unfortunate that last test would never be performed because she past away at 3:08 that morning. Kenda’s dad worked third shift and every afternoon when she came home from school she would wake her dad up with something to eat and they would talk. She would always ask her dad if he had three wishes what they would be. He always said money, fancy car, and a big house. She alway told him her wishes which were 1) a new heart because hers was getting weak and tired, 2) to go to nursing school and take care of NICU babies, and 3) that all kids who have to stay in a hospital would have their own PJ’s and that’s Kenda’s wish. Kenda’s first two wishes never came true, but thanks to her parents, the Seven Sabres Brotherhood, and the many riders who come out every year, this is one wish that has come true. Kenda’s wish raised over $1000 this year to buy PJ’s for the kids at UNC.

By: Alan Dockery Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort, near Ferguson, NC has one of my favorite parties the middle of June, the Spring Fling. By this time of the year the creek has warmed up a little so it’s comfortable to sit in and the weather is great for riding. Also, a few friends have a tradition of celebrating their birthdays there so I get to party with a bunch of folks from my area. As soon as I pulled in Friday, I could hear friends I ain’t seen lately giving me a Woooo and holding up a frosty adult beverage. Soon more riding and racing buddies were rolling into The Roost. Before I even started setting up, I made a new friend. Friday was for catching up on stories of spring rides and making plans for the summer. That night we hung out in the game room and on the deck as Dave cranked out tunes and we sang along. A Friday the 13th full moon slowly rose over the trees to more howling Woooos. Saturday morning was kinda lazy as some folks chilled in the shade while others took off to ride the many nearby mountain roads including the Blue Ridge Parkway. Some of us spent part of the morning feeding fresh worms to the fish. By the middle of the day it was getting hot, so we piled into the creek to cool off. I love the swimming hole and little waterfall, while other folks just chill in the shallows. About dark the party moved to the bandstand. For the next few hours some relaxed and grooved to the bluesy rock of The Red Dirt Revelators while the rest of us just gotta dance. After the band it’s time to hang around the campfire for one more beer and maybe a couple smores. There are more parties scheduled at Riders’ Roost this year so check out www.RidersRoost.com and plan to come hang out with us.

Army Summer Career Fest At Speedway Harley-Davidson Photo By: L & R Productions

By: Grant On June 11-13 Speedway Harley-Davidson held a Job Fair/ Veterans Event at their shop in Concord for recruits and Veterans alike. Thursday’s guest speaker was Tony Schumacher, Top Fuel Driver in the NHRA Drag Racing Circuit. Tony gave a great talk about being all you can be for some new recruits wondering about joining the US Army. One thing Tony and I agreed on is the “Pussification” (My word, not his) of American youth. Tony said we are now taught from an early age that we are all winners and he said that is simply not true. You got to work hard to be a winner in everything you do in life. Tony said if we are all winners he is still waiting on the check and trophy from each run he makes down the track in his 330MPH Top Fuel Nitro burning racecar. “You got to work hard”. I love this thought. We did not get trophies and medals for just being on the team in our time. (Again Me) No one remembers a second place finisher. Speedway had veterans on hand to talk to recently discharged veterans about jobs in the area. There were even some vendors on hand looking for veterans. As one of them told me, “We know these men and women are well trained and not looking for handouts. They know how to get a job done and follow directions to the letter. We want them”. Speedway Harley-Davidson had a Cobra chopper, free dogs, chips, and soda on hand each day, and vendors looking for help. Antron Brown’s (now retired) Pro Stock motorcycle was on hand and an Army theme bike built by Orange County Choppers. Tony Schumacher is a great speaker and representative of the sport of NHRA and for the US Army. Someone asked Mr. Schumacher about how his work out was to drive a Top Fuel car. He said we do everything but weights, as he ex-

plained to folks was each extra pound adds a 10th of a second to an elapsed time. Some were not too familiar with NHRA and when he said we travel at 2 football fields per second I saw some mouths open. That’s hauling a$$. There is no other way to put that. Watch for great events like this coming to your area. What a great way to spend an hour during a hard week. Thanks Speedway Harley-Davidson and our Army Veterans for all you do to preserve our right to do this.

By: Gary Steelman What a year this has been! Veterans in the news: returning vets from the Mideast to VA hospital’s misconduct. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of WWII. Each year Freightliner, in Cleveland, North Carolina, designs and builds Ride Of Pride trucks that commemorate and honor the service and sacrifice of the vets of all branches of the military. Schneider National and Cargo Transporters are sponsoring this year’s Ride Of Pride trucks. The dedication ceremony was held at Freightliner on May 23rd. For those who have not seen a Ride Of Pride Truck, these are some of the most beautiful Ride of Pride Trucks to date. These Ride of Pride trucks haul more than freight across the nation. They are a display of care for those survivors of our nation’s conflicts and wars. Drivers speak of Gold Star Mothers riding with them at events across the land, where they recall the day they got news of loved ones not returning home. Stories told of lives before war and conflict, and maybe even a small measure of closure for some. That is a greater gift. These trucks hold a meaning for those that work so hard to bring all the pieces together. As Ed Keeter put it, “All I can say is “Thank You” for your service and sacrifice.” Schneider drivers of the past Ride Of Pride trucks all converged in Freightliner’s parking lot, as if to welcome the newest Ride Of Pride trucks into service. What a sight, all those Ride Of Pride trucks in one place at the same time. Thank you Schneider National. Mike and Ed asked, “What will we do next year to top this?” Time will tell. We know you guys will come up with another Memorial Day weekend Ride Of Pride to remember. We will see you all next year with a new Ride Of Pride. Thanks go out Jennifer Bristor, George Drexel, and Ed Keeter for their dedication in putting these trucks together every year and for your continuing support of our veterans.

By: Rick Gammons I came home early from MB Bike Week so I could attend the Blues Festival at the Festival Park in Greensboro on May 17th. Good move! I was greatly impressed. I enjoy blues anyway, but this show carried it to a new level. The festival attracts all types, from older hippies to bikers and everything in between. Everyone is there for one reason…blues. The music started at 2 pm. Peggy and I arrived just before 3. There was already a huge crowd and after listening for a few minutes, I knew why. John Hill at Select Cycle (the Triumph Dealership), a member of the local blues society, invited us to come over and hang out for the day. He and Monty Hendrix, at Indian Motorcycle Greensboro, had some of their slick 2014 motorcycles on the hill just above all the happenings. The North Carolina Piedmont Blues Preservation Society has hosted this event for 28 years and this year was no disappointment. Check this out - Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, an artist with a wicked harmonica had the crowd mesmerized along with rhythmic pluses coming from the Flyers. Later Carl Weathersby, a rhythm type guitarist who let out some Chicago Blues and Lawyers, Guns, and Money, had funky licks that everyone liked. Abe Reid came on and played a style known as Piedmont Blues (and yes, it is a style indigenous to this area) mixed with a bit of Country and Delta. Tom Principato had some Rockin/Soul and The King Bees, who

backed up Beverly “Guitar” Watkins who, at 74, is an artist to contend with. She and The King Bees had a bluesy/rockabilly feel to the music, with Watkins slinging her guitar behind her head to play. In between all of this, Logie Meachum, a storyteller turned evangelist, entertained the audience with his version of the teachings of Jesus (and a bit of Mark Twain). Backed by Winston-Salem artist, Peter May on Dobro, the two kept everyone amused with Meachum’s stories and antics. He quipped that “even your lazy, beer drinkin’, reefer smokin’, sorry ass is still worth something!” While all of this was going on, Peggy and I hung out with our pals at Select Cycle (Triumph) and Indian Motorcycles Greensboro up on the hill. What an absolute hoot! It was worth going just to do that. Not only did they occupy the high ground, they were swamped with lookers, touchers, and other interested people eyeballing the 2014 Triumphs and Indian motorcycles. We picked, we danced, and we struck up hilarious conversations with total strangers. You could not have asked for a better day. The motorcycle area was on the sidewalk above the festivities, so we had the best of everything. We were also close to the beer truck! With blues in the background, happy people and new motorcycles to quiz about, next year’s Piedmont Blues Festival should definitely be on your agenda. In the meantime, see John at Select Cycle, 430 N. Eugene St. for a Triumph or Monty at Indian Motorcycle Greensboro, 201 S. Church St., both in Greensboro. Tell them Rick at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine said to check them out!

I Jumped On Two Indians By: Rick Gammons I found several Indians on Church Street in Greensboro. I think they are here to stay. Of course I am talking about Indian Motorcycles over at Monty Hendrix’s dealership at 201 S. Church Street, Greensboro. Hendrix and Bob McBride, his floor manager, are working hard to get Indian motorcycles established in this area. The building housing the dealership is rather meek, but the inside is just right. It is not over done, giving you a comfortable welcoming feel – not high and mighty, as some motorcycle establishments seem to be. Anyway, back to the bikes. Monty asked me to come over and demo a couple of his Indians. You can bet you’re a$$ I was gonna take him up on this opportunity. I got there and they prepared me to ride. After a copy of my driver’s license and a waiver form, I was lead over to the 2014 Indian Vintage, my first adventure. I have ridden several motorcycles in my life, but never an Indian. Sleek black, heavily chromed with a tan, high quality leather seat and bags, awaited me. I think my face reddened with anticipation as I got my riding instructions – one down, five up. Here is the speedometer. There is well enough gas for your ride. Enjoy yourself. I started out slowly. Initially, I think this motorcycle intimidated me as I had never been on a motorcycle of this caliber before. By the time I headed out of town, I was becoming more relaxed because of the ease of operating this bike. The response is incredible. A 111 cubic inch, fuel injected Thunderstroke III moves this machine. I understand what this means because entering I-85 at the I-40 split in Greensboro is no easy task, with less than a half mile to get on the left side. This puppy was cranking when I hit the highway, so getting over to the I-85 side was no problem. I eased over even with cars approaching. I cracked the throttle a little more and leaped ahead of the cars in my way. That is the way it was during the entire highway part of my ride. When I needed the power to move ahead of the traffic traveling with me, a slight twist on the throttle gave me all I needed, even at 90 mph. Hard turns were great, but not fantastic. A slightly longer rake may be the culprit here, making turning a bit more sensitive. The shifter needs a longer footpeg. I missed shifting a couple of times early on. I arrived back at the shop grinnin’ like a horse eatin’ briars! I had also lightened up a bit because of the ease of the ride. I parked it and was given the key bob (keyless start) for the Chieftain. It has a slightly shorter rake and a smaller than average fairing, bigger than a batwing, but not a full fairing.

Contained inside are the instruments and a 100-watt jammin’ stereo system. The windshield rises and lowers with a push of a button. Does your bike do this? The hard bags blend well with the traditional style of the Indian motorcycle. They open from the inside, giving the second rider the ability to get in the bag without having to reach over the lid. The standard Indian Red screamed Indian motorcycle. This color cannot be denied. The Indian war bonnet on the front fender led me out for another ride. Having gained confidence with the Vintage, I roared out on the Chieftain. I knew immediately that this was going to be an incredible journey. The gears shifted easily and were not audible. Turning was fantastic. This bike is SO smooth you almost don’t notice the road, but it had the same speed response as the Vintage when I hit the highway. I crossed through traffic with confidence, knowing that I had the power to control this situation. Something about the Chieftain was different. The Vintage was an excellent ride, but this Chieftain was something else. Glide is the word for this bike. It’s smooth as silk. I took her up to 120 mph and it was still smooth and felt like I was doing 60 mph. I rode up behind a big rig to check for stability. Outa sight! No matter where I positioned myself behind the truck, I felt no shake or sway. This bike is an absolute…. well, I don’t have another word to describe how well this bike handles. It is beyond belief. I returned eating briars again! If you are in the market for a new ride (or just interested), you seriously need to see Monty or Bob at Indian Motorcycles Greensboro at 201 S. Church Street. You can check them out at IndianMotorcycleGreensboro.com. You will get what I am saying once you get there. You might want to jump on an Indian, too.

The 4th Annual Brigitte’s Brigade Motorcycle Ride

By: Lisa White The 4th Annual Brigitte’s Brigade Motorcycle Ride on May 31, 2014 was a great success. Brigitte’s Brigade was formed in honor of Brigitte Gann when she was diagnosed with ALS. Brigitte’s Brigade has continued to look for additional ways to raise awareness and funds for the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter of the ALS Association that serves patients throughout North Carolina. In addition to their annual participation in the Walk to Defeat ALS, the team has hosted numerous fundraising events including the Beat to Defeat ALS, Silent Auctions, Jewelry and Mary Kay parties as well as the annual motorcycle event. Teresa Evans, Brigitte Gann’s sister, rode in the Brigitte’s Brigade annual motorcycle ride this year. Teresa shared her story with us regarding her sister’s battle and the need to continue our efforts to fundraise for this disease. She said, “In 2009, my sister was diagnosed with ALS. For four years I watched her go from a vibrant young woman to a vegetable. She could no longer talk, walk, eat, or breathe on her own. We lost her in June 2013 to this horrible disease. During those 4 years, I got to experience what the ALS Association does for those with ALS and their families. Without the Catfish Hunter Chapter’s constant fundraising efforts, the financial help for ALS would not be possible”. Lou Gehrig’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS is ultimately fatal. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with

2 BEER WING SPECIALS $

ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. This crippling disease can strike anyone. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. Presently, there is no known cure for the disease yet it still costs loved ones an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. The ALS Motorcycle Ride is just one of the great ways to raise money to support the ALS Association. Without these fundraisers, the ALS Association would not be able to continue with the research to find a cure for this horrible disease nor support those dealing with ALS. Bringing awareness to ALS must be a continuing effort. Donations can be made at http:// webnc.alsa.org/goto/brigittebrigade2014. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the annual motorcycle event. $

The Field Of Honor Dedication Day

By: Rose and Lloyd Over seven years ago a dream began to form; a dream for a monument in North Carolina to honor 150,000 veterans living in the Triad Region. Bill Moss, Robert O’Hanlon, William Knight, Jim Burgeon, Danny Bracken, and Richard Brenner with many others poured their hearts into this project. They raised money and began there planning. The Guilford and Forsyth County Park Commissioners donated and eight-acre site in the middle of Triad Park at 9652 E. Mountain Street in Kernersville, NC. On Sept 20, 2013, there was a groundbreaking ceremony with a few hundred veterans and family attending. On May 31, 2014 the dedication of the first phase was held. The main entrance features 12 variations of the U.S. Flag including “Don’t Tread On Me”. Two mini obelisks flank each

of the five entrances. The bases including information on wars from The American Revolution and Civil War to the on going war on terror. The main obelisk stands 60’ tall and is perched on a granite foundation with a cascading waterfall in the center of the memorial. Around the main obelisk sit five dark gray granite monuments featuring the history, emblems, and founding date of the five branches of our military. The builders acquired granite from Mt. Airy (NC) for the foundations and with the exception of the darker gray Virginia mist granite in the monuments for each military branch, all other material came from North Carolina. As you stand by the center obelisk and the waterfall cascades, it will rotate around and give the effect of helicopter blades. I can’t begin to describe the beauty or the honor in the Veteran’s faces that day. Brad Jones from Fox 8 made the dedication to all, and honored his co-worker Richard Brenner. To hear the Piedmont Wind Sympathy, or the bagpipes from the Randolph County Honor Guard and seeing the placement of wreaths at each military obelisk brought tears and smiles to so many faces. This beauty is difficult to put into words. The Master of Ceremony was The Honorable Governor Pat McCrory, and you could hear a pain in his voice as he described how much our veterans deserve. There is nothing that can be written to make you experience the feeling of the thousands of attendees, or convey the beauty of this monument that day. I can only say take a little time and go out, see for yourself. Read the names on the paver bricks that are dedicated to those who have given all for our freedom. It is very humbling. This was just phase one. There is much more to come; an amphitheater, and education centers. The planning committee, which dedicated their time and aspirations to this project, are making a dream into a reality. The vision that Bill Moss had will honor his insight forever. A very special thank you to all involved from committee members to volunteers, without you this would still just be a dream.

Boone Spring Bike Rally

By: dpapabear May 30th and 31st was once again the time to be in Boone, NC for the Boone Spring Rally. The fairgrounds are nestled in a valley just outside of Boone off old 421 on Roby Greene Road. The weather was threatening rain all around and over most of the state, but the valley that the rally is held in only saw little sprinkles once or twice daily and only short heavy rains during the night time hours, which was not enough to interfere with any of the activities. So if you were one of the ones afraid of getting wet, you sure missed a great rally again! The rally starts with vendor setups/gates open for campers on Thursday with the rally activities taking place on Friday and Saturday, and winding down Sunday with the packing up and the trip home. Friday sees vendor sales/swap, bands playing different types of music for your listening pleasure and bike games. Saturday is the main day with vendor sales, bike games for cash prizes, bands, and a wet t-shirt contest as well as a 50/50 drawing. Most of the bike games offer a $100 prize sponsored by Tom McGrath Law Group. The bike show offered trophies along with a cash prize. The burnout contest winner gets a new tire installed by Iron Station Thunder, and the wet t-shirt cash prize is enhanced by donations from the audience. The 50/50 this year total over $1755! Winners of this spring’s events: Slow Race: David, Pick-‘em up & put-‘em down: David and Bonnie, Balloon Toss: David and Bonnie, Weinee Bite: David and Aimee, Potato Dig: Johnnie and Brandi. The Bike Show winners were: Custom: 1st Place - Tina Luther, 2nd Place - Jason Gosnell, Touring: 1st Place - Alex Elros, 2nd Place - Bill Gorman, Cruiser: 1st Place - Trent Chatham, 2nd Place - Rich Hatcher, Vintage: 1st Place Randall Shaffer, 2nd Place - “Croc”, Metric: 1st Place - Dwayne Location Map Fillers, 2nd Place - Leon Brown. NEVER A COVER CHARGE!

The burnout contest was a tie between Michael Eller and Mater Bradshaw so Iron Station Thunder provided them both with a new tire installed. This year also had a first for the rally with a wedding taking place on Friday 30th, with the union of a couple of regular patrons of the rally. Dawn and Mark Whitescarver became one, during the rally, doing what they both enjoyed, riding and sharing their time with their extended biker family. So whether you are into the bike games, watching or participating, listening to the music, camping and the camp ground activities, shopping at the vendors, people watching, swapping stories with your friends and making new ones as well, riding the beautiful mountain country side and winding roads, or just relaxing and helping support the cause for some of the charities, make plans now for the 2014 Fall Boone Bike Rally coming this September 5th and 6th. I Hope to see you there for some fun times and good fellowship. And as always, ride safe, ride often, and enjoy the journey!

3rd Annual Seth Nall Scholarship Benefit Ride

By: Buzz Seth Nall was tragically taken from his family and friends at a young age. After his passing, one of his friends decided to keep Seth’s memory alive through a scholarship fund to help graduating high school seniors with college expenses. Every year Seth’s dad, Tim, along with Tim’s brother, Terry, personally interview and award the applicants for the scholarship. On June 7th, the parking lot of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church was a gathering place for friends, family, and supporters of Tim and Seth Nall. The 95 bikes that rolled in to support the Seth Nall Scholarship Fund were greeted with biscuits from the Archdale Biscuit Factory and everyone lined up to register and pull their first poker run cards. This ride was escorted by local law enforcement and after a prayer and a few words of wisdom from the officers, it was time to ride. The temperature was perfect and the skies were beautiful as we headed out to World Class Powersports in High Point, NC. We eased down the highway with the help from the police escort and arrived in High Point without incident. Once the kickstands were down we all flooded into World Class Powersports to cool down and look over the Victory Motorcycles on the showroom floor. The staff at World Class Powersports had some refreshments available for the riders. Thanks guys! Back on the road, we headed for Riders In The Country for our final stop. This is where the party started! Riders provided a great spread of hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixin’s. Let me tell you, we chowed down! While we ate “The Good Ole Boys” took the stage and rocked out some good southern and classic rock tunes. After the final cards were pulled our attention was turned again to the stage where Tim Nall took the stage to announce the poker hand winners. The Best Hand went to Steve Sim-

mons, with a Full House 6’s and 4’s. The Worst Hand was awarded to Scott White, 9 high with a 3, 4, 6, and a 7. Most of the scholarship winners attended the ride and were called to the stage to be recognized. This year’s scholarships went to Kaitlyn Green, John Christopher Williams, Ashton Parker, Dylan Gibson, Olivia Doane, Alexis Grove, Tanner Whiteford, Jared Sumner, and Tyler Hilliard. Congratulations! The 3rd Annual Seth Nall Scholarship Benefit Ride raised $7,482 this year working towards a goal of $40,000 for an endowment fund for perpetual scholarships. A big THANK YOU to all who came out to support the scholarship and to show some love for Tim and the rest of Seth’s family and friends. You can see all the pictures from this event at FullThrottleMagazine.com and if you rode and want to see a picture of you on your bike, download a freebie. Spring Beach Bike Week At Beach House Harley-Davidson By: Judy Bortz Beach House Harley-Davidson is THE start and end of Spring Beach Bike Week. The venue seems to grow every year, and 2014 was huge! There were more and better vendors, more bikes for sale, and more fun to be had than ever before! They had around 100 new bikes for sale this year; with deals so amazing they sold 50 of those. If you come down to the rally bike shopping, this is the dealer to see. Beach House sales staff is friendly and knowledgeable from MotorClothes to parts and service. The sales team works hard to get you on the Harley of your dreams and then stand behind each sale with service that can’t be beat! This year was busy from start to end of the rally even with the spotty weather some days. You could find a vender for anything you wanted, lights, detail, clothes, and accessories, and they are all in one stop, unlike the vendor spots in MB that are spread all over the place. Live music and DJ’s rocked the crowd all week long. The MDA Lounge was a great way to raise funds for a worthy

14th Annual Hog Happening By: Alice “Smiley” Harvey June 6th-7th was the place to be for the 14th Annual Hog Happening in downtown Lincolnton, NC. Friday night kicked it off with bike games and several different bands on the Budweiser Stage including The Jimmie Van Zant Band. Saturday brought perfect weather for riding as 181 riders bought 300 hands as they joined in for the poker run sponsored by The Freedom Biker Church of Hickory, NC. Fifty percent of proceeds went to Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.). Charlie Carpenter had the best hand, Ricki Cook had the most aces, and Michelle Henderson had the worst hand. Iron Station Thunder sponsored the burnout competition. There were 4 contestants, Philip, John, Tony, and Mitch, with Mitch Bumgarner taking first place. He received a trophy as well as a new tire from Iron Station Thunder. Tony who won second place also received a brand new tire from Iron Station Thunder. Bob Cook won the scavenger hunt. Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson out of Hickory, N.C. sponsored the bike games, which included Down The Tube, Slow Ride, and several more. Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson also had a jump start bike set up in front of the courthouse. Anyone could hop on the bike to experience the ultimate experience of being on a Harley. This bike was set up on a platform with a free spinning back wheel for learners where they didn’t have to worry about messing with the brake; just jump on and change gears and hear the power of the Iron Horse. There was also a corn hole tournament, which was orga-

nized by Tailgating For Troops. Kids enjoyed face painting as well as games that were age appropriate. Much of the crowd enjoyed listening to 3:16, which is a Christian rock band while enjoying a wide variety of good foods and a wide selection of barbecue that included chicken, ribs, brisket, and pork. The bike show had 49 entrants. Steve Forque won in the antique class, Devin Aker won in the cruiser class, Danette Larson won in the custom class, John Olrich won in the dresser class, Charlie Beech won in the radical class, Brian Hobbs won in the sport class, Harvey Mayhill won in the trike class. Danette Larson took best of show and people’s choice went Shari Holden.

Stuffed With Hugs

HIGH POINT BODY & PAINT Specializing In Custom Paint For Motorcycles & Custom Vehicles

By: Rose and Lloyd The Ladies Of Harley at Speedway Harley-Davidson in Concord, NC do a few fundraisers or sponsor a couple charities a year. In February, under the leadership of Patsy McFalls, they chose to do “Stuffed with Hugs. They put colorful boxes throughout the dealership and collected small beanie babies, and other stuffed animals. On Friday night, June 6th, they had collected over 600 Beanie Babies and other stuffed animals. These were donated to three North Carolina State Troopers; Officers Bowen, Farr, and Loukos. These toys are used when there is an accident involving a child. The troopers have something the child can hold and cuddle in a time that can be very stressful. This works to calm them down and take their minds off the trauma. It is also hard for troopers to see children hurt or shaken up. This gives them a way to give some comfort and support. Many thanks to all who donated and came out for the presentation. A special thanks to the Independent Tribune Newspaper and Full Throttle Magazine for their time and helping us get the word out. With encouragement, we hope other groups will follow or lead.

Spokes & Jokes

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

A DEA Agent stopped at a ranch in Texas and talked to an old rancher. He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher said, “okay, but don’t go into that field over there”, as he pointed out the location. The DEA Agent verbally exploded and said, “Look mister, I have the authority of the federal government with me!” Reaching into his rear back pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. “See this badge?! This badge means I can go wherever I want. On any land! No questions asked, no answers given! Do you understand old man?!” The rancher kindly nodded, apologized, and went about his chores. Moments later the rancher heard loud screams, he looked up and saw the DEA agent running for his life, being chased by the ranchers big Santa Gertrudis Bull. With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it was likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. The old rancher threw down his tools, ran as fast as he could to the fence, and yelled at the top of his lungs. “Your badge! Show him your badge!”

A young boy enters a barbershop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.” The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves the dollar. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!” Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store and says, “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game’s over!”

he slides down the side of the motorcycle anyway. Finally giving up his frail grip, he tries to leap off the motorcycle and throw himself to safety. Unfortunately, his foot has become entangled in the exhaust pipes, he is now at the mercy of the motorcycle’s roaring wheels as his head is struck against the ground, over and over. He is moments away from unconsciousness when, to his great fortune, Wendell, the Wal-Mart greeter, sees him and unplugs the coin operated motorcycle.

A nasty old biker named “TAZ” walks into a bank and says to the woman at the teller window “I want to open a d@mn checking account.” The astonished woman replies, “I beg your pardon, sir. I must have misunderstood you. What did you say?” “Listen up, d@mn it. I said I want to open a damn checking account now!” “I’m very sorry sir, but that kind of language is not tolerated in this bank. “The teller leaves the window and goes over to the bank manager to inform him of her situation. The manager agrees that the teller does not have to listen to that foul language. They both return to the window and the manager asks the old biker, “Sir, what seems to be the problem here?” “There is no d@mn problem,” the man says. “I just won 50 million dollars in the d@mn lottery and I want to open a d@mn checking account in this d@mn bank!” “I see”, says the manager, “and is this b!tch giving you a hard time?” .

On a rural road a state trooper pulled this farmer over and said, “Sir, do you realize your wife fell out of the car several miles back?” To which the farmer replied: “Thank God, I thought I had gone deaf!”

A young man wanted to get his beautiful blonde wife something nice for their first wedding anniversary. So he decided to buy her a cell phone. He showed her the phone and explained to her all of its features. Meg was excited to receive the gift and simply adored her new phone. The next day Meg went shopping. Her phone rang and, to her astonishment, it was her husband on the other end. “Hi Meg,” he said, “How do you like your new phone?” Meg replied, “I just love it! It’s so small and your voice is clear as a bell, but there’s one thing I don’t understand though...” “What’s that, sweetie?” asked her husband. “How did you know I was at WalMart?” Husband and wife had a tiff. Wife called up her mom and said, “He fought with me again, I am coming to live with you.” Mom said, “No darling, he must pay for his mistake. I am coming to live with you.”

Al Gore decides to try riding a motorcycle, even though he has had no lessons or prior experience. He mounts the motorcycle uninstructed, turns it on and it immediately roars into motion. As it moves along faster and faster, Al begins to fall from the seat. In terror, he grips tightly on the handlebars, but can’t get a firm grip. He tries to throw his arms around the motorcycle’s gas tank, but

A policeman pulls a man over for speeding and asks him to get out of the car. After looking the man over he says, “Sir, I couldn’t help but notice your eyes are bloodshot. Have you been drinking?” The man gets really indignant and says, “Officer, I couldn’t help but notice your eyes are glazed. Have you been eating doughnuts?” A wife asks her husband, “Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk and if they have avocados, get 6. A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk. The wife asks him, “Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?” He replied, “They had avocados.” A biker is riding along a country lane, when a sparrow flies up in front of him. The biker can’t do anything and hits the sparrow. As he looks in his rear view mirror, he sees the sparrow lying in the road. Being the kind of guy he is, he stops, picks up the sparrow and takes it home and puts it in a cage, still in a coma. When the sparrow wakes up the following morning, he looks through the bars of the cage and says, “$hit, I must have killed the biker”. WIFE: “There is trouble with the car. It has water in the carburetor.” HUSBAND: “Water in the carburetor? That’s ridiculous “ WIFE: “I tell you the car has water in the carburetor.” HUSBAND: “You don’t even know what a carburetor is. I’ll check it out. Where’s the car? WIFE: “In the pool”

Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People?

This is a question we have all heard or said plenty of times. It makes no sense. People doing good, treating people right, living life helping others and a friend to everyone and then something bad happens to them. They may have a bad doctor’s diagnosis like cancer, or lose their job, or get into a car accident. The first thing people think is WHY? “Why did that happen to them? They are such a good person!” A lot of times people even question God. “Why God? Why did you let this happen?“ I hear people all the time blaming God or questing God. Why? Why? Why? Well, I, too, used those words. I have not publicly shared this, but with our closest friends and family and someone we were ministering to, but right now I think it could help someone so that’s what I’m going to do. Back in October 2010 I went to my kidney specialist with bad headaches thinking it could be from my BP or God forbid aneurysm form this crazy kidney disease I have. I was sent for yet another MRI, which, if you have had one, you know how you dread it! Well the results are in, you have a brain tumor - is not cancerous but it is growing you will need brain surgery so we made you an appointment with the brain surgeon. I have to say “Popcorn” my husband and I took it very well, then he sat our four children down to tell them. That’s hard stuff. I stayed positive. I kept the faith. I was totally dependent on Jesus. BUT Then I thought of my daughter then 13 and son 18, then our older kids and grand kids and I lost focus on the fact that I am not my own, I was bought with the blood of Jesus and I am created to bring him glory. I said, “Why? Why do my children have to go through this? This isn’t fair to them. I don’t want them to have to

63

hurt”. Then I heard this still small voice, “Why not? Why not you?” This helped me to understand a lot. Just because I’m a Christian, or just because I’m a “good person” or just because I love the poor and try to feed and clothe them, that doesn’t matter. It’s so not about me and all about HIM. I can tell you that I have used this situation to minister and that people have gained faith because of the work God is doing in my life and it has caused me to do soul searching and realize it’s all about Jesus and trusting HIM fully. Bad things do happen to “good people”. But you can take that bad situation and use it to help in so many others and so much good can come of it! In James, Chapter 1 verses 2-4 It says, “Dear brothers and sisters, Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Are troubles going to come? Are we going to have bad seasons? Yes, but be sure you know the One to get you through! His name is Jesus! By the way I have not needed surgery for the removal of the tumor, yet. ALL glory to God, it’s in His hands and to Him be the Glory. When the time comes I want be alone with Jesus. He will guide the surgeon’s hands!

Love And Prayers! Robin StJohn

Why I Ride!

By: Danny Gaynor People always ask me why I ride. They ask, “Are you afraid and ain’t it dangerous? Do you ever worry about getting hurt?” They ask a lot of questions and tell me about someone they know who rides or their doctor or lawyer that rides. Over the years I’ve never tried to explain it. The old adage applies, “If you have to ask, you wouldn’t understand”, but today I’ll give it a shot. What’s it like to ride? It is: The thing you can do with friends and be alone with your thoughts at the same time and each person respecting the other’s space and thoughts. You get off of work stressed out and become totally calm after a long scenic ride home. It is the place you need to be to figure out an important decision. Allowing the wind to blow across your body and feeling cleansed. Riding in the rain and knowing its OK, it’s all good because the grime is washed off you and your bike. A bad day riding is still a good day! When you hear a rider went down and you say a little prayer even if you think he is a douche bag! Hearing your passenger go “EWWWWW!” after they get hit with a juicy bug for the first time! It’s a group guys you call brother meeting at a house to work on bikes together and talking sh!t and picking on each other! Having friends that will come get you and be with you when the sh!t hits the fan. People that call to see how your new tattoo is healing. Friends that know when you hurt and stand by your side and never say a word and hurt because you hurt! Your loving wife understands that you just need to go for a ride. Your buddies get excited when you put some cool sh!t on your bike even if it really sucks! Riding and smelling the environment around you from smelly diesel fumes, splatter skunks, and the sweet smell of honeysuckles on a warm southern night! It is straight pipes vibrating off the mountainside. It is the thought that a good looking and sounding bike makes us old fat man look sexy! It’s riding a brother in for his last ride

remembering all the good times! Nodding at the old man smiling who remembers the feeling! Naming your bike after some girl! Rounding a curve on an unknown road and being in awe and amazement at the view in front of you! Most of all, having the arms of the woman you love wrapped around you experiencing it all with you is the greatest feeling of it all!

Team jumped in and paid their respects to several surviving D-Day paratroopers present. There were flyovers featuring a C-47, a P-51, and a T-6 flyover in the missing man formation to commemorate the lives of soldiers killed in combat. Wreaths were laid at various important locations during the ceremonies. There were readings from soldiers’ diaries by veterans, Senators, and foreign dignitaries, prayers, and a bagpiper played “Amazing Grace”. In the tradition of the Honor Flights to DC, Rotary District 7690 sponsored several busloads of Triad area WWII vets to the ceremony, and were escorted by area motorcyclists and Patriot Guard riders. It was very moving and to be in the presence of so many of “The Greatest Generation” was humbling, to say the least. After the main ceremony the Bedford Boys “Homage” sculpture by the late artist, Jim Brothers was dedicated. There were many plaques and statues all over the grounds. I am certain that a trip at a less crowded time will be necessary to take them all in. The Memorial committee is dedicated to growing the Memorial and keeping the history of D-Day alive and many school children visit on field trips throughout the year. Check out www.DDay.org and plan a ride to the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA. It is well worth the ride.

Wheels Through Time Celebrating 12th Anniversary July 4th Weekend Wheels Through Time Museum is celebrating its 12th Anniversary in Maggie Valley this Fourth of July weekend. The anniversary festivities will run from Thursday through Monday, July 3-7, from 9-5. The museum houses hundreds of rare and unique machines spanning over 110 years of transportation history, dating back to very roots of motorized travel. After relocating to Western North Carolina in 2002, Wheels Through Time has attracted over threequarters of a million visitors to its 38,000 square foot facility in Maggie Valley near the Great Smoky Mountains. And since opening its doors, the museum has continued to grow both its collection and its following. The collection of all-American motorcycles and automobiles now totals over 360 historic machines, and museum attendance has soared over the past several years. Recently, the museum’s hit television series “What’s In The Barn?” on Velocity TV has begun its second season. The series follows museum curator Dale Walksler and his son Matt across the county on hunts for motorcycle history. During the anniversary weekend celebration, Wheels Through Time staff will be holding demonstrations and exhibitions of dozens of priceless rare motorcycles and automobiles. Numerous machines found on episodes of “What’s In The Barn?” on display in the museum will be featured, including one of America’s earliest twin-cylinder motorcycles, a pair of century-old bikes that recently competed in a race for motorcycles 100 years an older, and a running and operating original 1912 Harley owned by the same family since new, just to name a few. Various military vehicles will also be on display and ready for exhibition, including two rare Harley-Davidson

Air Force machines recently discovered in rural Arkansas. During the anniversary weekend, the museum will be giving away 500 American flags to visitors throughout the weekend in celebration of our nations birthday. Demonstrations and exhibitions of many of America’s rarest two and four-wheeled machines will be held throughout the weekend. Bethany’s Ride

By: (Smiley) Glen Palmer FFFH The Fish Heads met on Saturday morning, May 31st at Hollywood’s Cycle Shop in McAdenville, NC for a ride to celebrate the life of Bethany Preston. What a beautiful day it was. We left from Hollywood’s at around 11am with a police escort through town. John, Bethany’s husband, led the pack and his passenger on two wheels was their oldest daughter Brayden, who is 13. Directed south on Hwy 85 through Kings Mountain National Park, we were met at the other side by another police officer to escort us through Kings Mountain on Hwy 161 and ended up at the Whiskey Mill in Bessemer city. At the Whiskey Mill we had time get to know the group from Carolina Faith Riders and the Bikers for Christ group and every one that joined Bethany’s ride. This is also where I had a chance to get to know John and Brayden and learn of John and Bethany’s other children; Trevor 11, and Kadence 4, that John now raises on his own because of the cervical cancer Bethany was treated for that was thought to be gone, but returned and spread through her body taking her from them fast. I never had a chance to meet Bethany but I did meet Brayden and see her passion for her mother. I would like to thank everyone that came out and rode with us on behalf of the Preston family and the Fish Heads. To learn of future rides the Fish Heads support and sponsors, join us on Facebook at (Fish Heads friends). We look forward to riding with you.

AMRA Spring Nitro Nationals At The ROCK

Story and photo by Alan Dockery Nitromethane and tire smoke, sure can make a spring afternoon smell nice. Along with the roar of hotrod Harleys, drag racing fans got lots of both the last weekend of May when the American Motorcycle Racing Association came to Rockingham Dragway for the Spring Nitro Nationals. Other than light rain early Saturday morning, it was a beautiful weekend to enjoy the Harley drags. Once the strip was dry, we enjoyed three rounds of qualifying in classes from street bikes to top fuelers thundering down the quarter mile in six seconds at way over 200 miles per hour. Saturday night the band PeacePipe fired up some partyin’ at The Rock. A few Carolina guys were in the Top Fuel field. Tommy Grimes, Winston-Salem, NC, put the Ray Price Harley-Davidson machine at the front of the field. Tii Tharpe, East Bend, NC, was second on the black Bad Apple bike while Mark Cox, Wilkesboro, NC, qualified the Bojangles bike fourth. Tommy Grimes set a new mile per hour record of 227.27 in the final round. And what a race that was! Both Tommy and Randal Andras, Amelia, LA, covered the quarter mile in 6.313 seconds, but Andras got the win light based on his .015 second reaction time to Tommy’s .067. Dale Nilles, Wilkesboro, NC, continued his winning ways in Pro Fuel. Saturday he qualified the carbureted nitro bike number one with a 7.284. Then Sunday he moved through the field to take the win. Jay Beasley, Winston-Salem, also ran in Pro Fuel. Keith Richner, Moore, SC, has a new bike this season and it is quick enough to run in Pro Gas. He also ran in the Super Comp 8.90 second index class. Dickie Johnson, Aynor, SC, has revived an old machine campaigned back in the day by Scot Wood and Country Maines. He qualified it first in Modified then took the win on Sunday. Chris Wood, Goldsboro, NC, brought even more smiles to Scot’s face when he won the Super Gas 9.90 index class. I’ve seen that boy charging down the drag strip for years and too many times as the runner up. It was great to see him in the winner’s circle. Greg Best, Raleigh, NC, made us Shovelhead fans proud running the WFO machine in Super Gas. Rick Medford, Cherokee, NC, qualified in the 10.30 Super Pro class, but he really shined in the 11.50 Street Eliminator class taking the win over the 15 other racers in a competitive class. Erik Harley, Rock Hill, SC; Lane Boger, Jr., Concord, NC; Mike Best, Cary, NC; Victor Trainque, Goose Creek, SC and Travis Ellis, Summerville, SC also ran in Street Eliminator. Jason Jones, Creedmore, NC, competed in the Dresser class. The 10.90 Pro Eliminator class had 26 racers going after the trophy. Glen Sutton, Moore, SC; Don Miller, Goldsboro, NC; Steve Brumfield, Stantonsburg, NC; Lane Boger, Sr., Greensboro, NC; Scott Wood, Goldsboro, NC and Erik Harley raced in Pro Eliminator.

75

I know a bunch of y’all ran in the dial-in Eliminator class, but the track didn’t generate a list of names. The number one qualifier and winner of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine $150 bonus was Elijah Agnor, Lynchburg, VA, with a perfect .000-second reaction time. Yes folks, a triple zero light is rare. Erik Harley was the Eliminator class runner up on Sunday. I hope to see lots of Harley drags fans at The Rock October 10 - 12 when the AMRA returns for the Jim McClure AllHarley Carolina Nitro Nationals.

US House Votes To Retain NHTSA Motorcycle Lobbying Ban

AmericanMotorcyclist.com The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill late Tuesday (June 11, 2014) that reaffirms Congress’ intent to prohibit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from lobbying states and state legislators on motorcycle safety matters. H.R. 4745 - the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act - originally contained a provision that would have permitted the NHSTA to spend tax money to try to convince states to adopt mandatory motorcycle helmet laws and to impose other unnecessary regulations on motorcyclists. The ban has been in place since 1995. U.S. Representatives Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) offered the amendment to strike Section 102 of H.R. 4745. The amended bill passed on a vote of 229-192, with 10 members not voting. “As a rider, I know that educating riders and the driving public is the best way to keep motorcyclists safe,” Walberg said. “I’ve always thought that what you put between your ears is equally as important as what you put on your head or body, and I’m glad the House passed this commonsense amendment so we can focus on promoting motorcycle safety, not wasting more taxpayer dollars.” Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations, applauded the change. “We are happy that the House members accepted the language in the amendment,” said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations. “Lifting the ban on NHSTA lobbying would have given Washington bureaucrats free rein to spend taxpayer money to lobby states and legislators to create laws that infringe on our rights as motorcyclists.” The Senate version of the appropriations bill remains under consideration. The AMA believes that adults should have the right to voluntarily decide when to wear a helmet. The AMA does not oppose laws requiring helmets for minor motorcycle operators and passengers. The AMA asserts that helmet use alone is insufficient to ensure a motorcyclist’s safety. Been There, Done That, Got the Shirt

By: R. Gammons Myrtle Beach Bike Week happened as scheduled. Most everybody I know has been. I have not… till now. When I was employed, my busiest week schedule was during this week. Retirement has offered opportunities I did not have before. So, I was ready for MB Bike Week 2014. My week began at home, with the journey. Peggy and I headed out Saturday, the 10th, into a constant wind. But, with Peggy, me, and the gear for weight, all was well. I traveled with bikes of all types, all the way. Unfortunately, I saw way too many on trailers, even though I know some people are not able to travel that far on a motorcycle. I have a handicapped tag on my bike, but I was taught by old school bikers. I just cannot trailer my motorcycle. My bike was dusty, bug ridden, hot and tired when I arrived at the coast. My time there was incredibly great. We stayed at a resort just south of Hwy 544 in Surfside Beach. I never crossed 544, so I never entered Myrtle Beach city limits. With so many venues in Surfside Beach, there was no reason to head north. Peggy and I hung around in the area most of the time, but we did go out for an adventure on Monday. We jumped into the carnage on 17 and headed south. It pays to be on your toes out there. It could keep you alive. We lost most everybody at Murrell’s inlet. It looked as if they had their own mini Bikefest going on. We continued to roll on until we reached Georgetown. Neither of us had been there before. What an absolute treat! We crossed the Waccamaw River into another era. The town is old and life is much more relaxed there. There were nice higher end places to eat, with café settings on the sidewalks. It still has a waterfront shopping district, with boutiques, small eateries, consignment shops, and a historical appeal about it. It was a really nice place to visit and we spent a large part of the day there. There were a couple hundred other bikes there, so it’s a good place to ride to and escape the madness to the north. I could live there. On the way back, we cruised through Murrell’s Inlet. First half - quiet, the last half – wide-open, 120%! Every place there was packed and great, as usual. Music and revelry was everywhere. Everyone I saw and spoke to was having a really good time. Where we stayed was just off the service road in Surfside. Service roads are a good thing during bike week. We could find half dozen bars, a grocery, several restaurants and various

other shops to visit. Patty’s was just down the street. I could find friendly people and cold, CHEAP beer there. When you are down there, drop in. It is a good local establishment. There were so many things to do; there is no way you can do it all. I was really wowed by a lot of things. Here are 12 things I noticed about my trip to Bike Week 2014: 1. Honeysuckle. It permeated the air, starting at the SC line. Nice additive to the ride. 2. Watch the wind. Large fields give it power. Be aware! 3. Even a half mile off Bus 17, the drone of motorcycles is a constant. 4. Be careful. The sun will burn you. Use sunscreen. 5. People who live there are friendly. 6. Watch for cars. Most bikers are courteous and watch. Car drivers suck! A car that ran a stop sign almost plowed us. They just do stupid

stuff. 7. Be sure your bike is dirty on arrival. It looks like you rode it down. 8. Ducks and geese. They are beautiful, but can mess up BIKERS WELCOME your day if you hit 1003 Redbank Rd. Goose Creek, SC one. 9. Visit other towns 843-553-0000 in the area. It is a $ good thing to do. 10. Visit the local $ produce stand. Pool Tables • Outdoor Privacy Area Fresh is good. 11. Smell the salt Happy Hour (Mon-Fri) 4pm-7pm air. It is different. Open Sunday At Noon 12. Leave your phone in your 81 SUPPORT room. Seize the day, not the phone. SUPPORT Ride safe!

The Wall That Heals Escort Ride By: Steve (Back in the Wind Again) Rowland After a year of recovering from foot surgery, I went on my first group ride May 18, 2014. What a great ride to make a comeback on. One of my friends, Bob Wichowski, asked me to join him on this awesome event. We had the honor of escorting “The Wall That Heals” traveling museum from Galivants Ferry, SC to Market Commons in Myrtle Beach. We met up with about 10 or so riders here in Little River, then rode to Aynor and met over 100 bikes including a lot of old friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. We staged on a little road right by the truck that had the wall replica in it. The police were escorting us all the way to the beach. The trailer hauling the replica wall is a traveling museum. On Veteran’s Day 1996 Viet Nam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) unveiled the half size replica in Washington, DC. It was designed to travel across our nation to let our vets who couldn’t get to DC experience the healing power of “The Wall That Heals”. It has visited about 350 cities and towns across the country spreading the memorial’s healing legacy to millions. The web site has so much information; please check it out at www.vvmf.org. Did you know they added over 300 names after it was dedicated in DC? The first veteran died in 1959, there are 8 women are on the wall as well. I have had the opportunity visit the Wall in DC. If you ever have the chance to go and see it, please try. You will never forget it. When I turned 18 and the draft was called, I was a little nervous. As I write this, my mind had a flashback of all the mayhem back then, rallies, protests, draft card burnings, hippies, and college protests. The war ended that year, thank goodness. Holy shit, that was a time. Anyway, this ride was a real honor. At the staging area, I was walking around talking and taking

pictures, I came across a lady who ask me if I new anyone who would give her a ride to the Wall’s final destination in Myrtle Beach. She told me she lived across the street behind the little grocery store where the truck had stopped to meet with our group. After learning what was going on, she went home, got changed and came right back to join in. She said her dad and brothers were all veterans and she wanted to show her support. I didn’t get her last name, but Linda did tell me her husband said she was crazy, but said go ahead. I introduced her to Emmitt Jones, one of our local bikers. He told me he was glad he could help her today and that she did a great job as a passenger. We pull up to the parking lot full of people and bikes. By the time I got parked, the trailer had already opened up the side panels to reveal part of the museum. Three of the local TV stations were out interviewing people. Kris Tourtellotte from the Veteran’s Welcome Home and Resource Center (VeteransWelcomeHomeAndResourceCenter. org) in Little River put this whole thing together. He was out there in front of the cameras letting everyone know about our vets. He rode right behind the tractor-trailer with the Combat Veterans Association group leading the riders. There were over 120 bikes in this escort. I was very proud to be a part of this ride. It was a great day and it was nice to get back in the wind. Ride safe my friends.
