s you read issue #205 you are sharing history with us! In August of 1998 we began distribution of Issue #1 of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. I cannot help but remember the shock I felt when we rolled up the back door of that truck and gazed at a pallet with 10,000 magazines on it. Actually, that happens to me every month when I see 20,000 magazines on pallets and realize every one of them represents a reader! We never looked back and 17 years later, here we are! It hasn’t been all rainbows and unicorns, but it has been a good ride. Every month and at every event, we are blessed by readers who thank us for the magazine and tell us what a good job we are doing. That’s really cool, but we are grateful to all of you, our readers for the success that we enjoy. Without you, it would not be possible. That brings us to the advertisers. You know, the businesses that make it all possible. We thank each and every one of them. They all played a part in this historic milestone whether large or small, they all count and we thank them all. Although several advertisers have been with us a considerable length of time, Greensboro H-D is the only original remaining. The Smoke Out 16 Blazes In The Heat By: Everette “EZ” Short On the weekend of the Summer Equinox, the sun shone down mercilessly on those strong enough to take it like the warriors gathered at the Rockingham Dragway for The Smoke Out Rally 16. We rolled in to set up camp on Friday afternoon, just in time to catch an amazing first round from Rebel Son, only to be followed up by an impressive wet tee shirt contest. Anyone who could blast that much great tunage and last through the heat, while revving up the crowds in 110º of sweltering humidity is a superhuman, but Lee Johnson (gentleman, guitarist & singer extraordinaire), Dave Schnider (blistering bass & psycho eyeballer) and Ron Kirk (drummer from a distant galaxy) are made of something stronger than steel that propelled Rebel Son to come out again to rockabilly us into the middle of the night. Then, at 11PM, when the gates were officially locked, the real party started in the campground with Black Ice providing a massive wall of sound to those who rolled up to burn their back tires down all night long. The crowds were huge and loud, but the only thing that got hurt were a lot of PBR cans, some feelings, and a few burnt pieces of rubber. On Saturday morning, the heat index reached 110º by 10AM, as we gathered at the SBB big tent traveling show, hosted by Bill Barber and a true collection of animated celebrities, to share a breakfast of iced fruit, pancakes and, of course, more PBR and watermelon moonshine swigs. Early in the day, our very own Whitney Rose Stevens of SBB fame, won the woman’s anvil toss, while the ground pounding sound of amateur drag racing ran as a backdrop until about 3PM, when the big boys brought out the alcohol fuel drag bikes. Meanwhile, a cool band called The Coffin Kids kicked the afternoon into overdrive, with a full wet tee shirt dance contest gyrating right through their intermission. Right before sundown, it was time for the Superhero Mini-Bike Races! The only rules for these races seem to be that it be a mini-bike you ride while you wear a costume. This year, Kevin “Bean’re”

brought along a troop of big wheel mini-trikes, with his tribe dressed like extras from The Roadwarrior. In the end, I don’t know how they figured out who won what, other than by audience applause, because everyone was laughing too hard to keep track of the race. Even our own Doc Freedom got into the act with a spill on the tarmac and an injured knee. Funny that a few hundred people raced on the dragstrip all afternoon and the only ones with road rash were riding mini-bikes? After the gates closed, the big party started in the campground and lasted until first light, with mad, costumed Karaoke and burnouts in the pit until the wee hours of Sunday morning. Towards midnight, history was made when Blind Bob, wearing a full Godzilla outfit in 100º temps and 100% humidity, burned a brand new tire to the ground in the pit. I don’t care how big or bad you are, you will never beat a blind guy, in a full fur lizard outfit, burning a tire down until it blows. It was amazing and he plans on going to the salt flats to beat the world speed record for a blind man on a motorcycle. Stay tuned. WOW Bob! I was impressed. In the end, The Smoke Out is about choppers and hard riders. It is about builders, from professional builders to those

bloody-knuckled guys (and ladies) burning the midnight oil in an unheated shed to build a chopper they can call their own. Chops of all makes are featured, American, British, Metric, everything. The event is about riders, cross-town to crosscountry in a rainstorm, some riding in from all corners of the USA, just to spend two days of madness together, in celebration of a lifestyle that is fading. The Smoke Out Rally is still

Charity Poker Run To Benefit John “Wally” Walrath By: Meredith W. On April 19th, 2015, Wally was the victim of a hit and run accident while riding his ’05 Sportster 1200. As reported by the local media the driver who fled has been caught. Wally, however, was hospitalized with severe leg injuries and needed help covering the medical and recovery expenses. The poker run to help cover these costs and show support to Wally was held Sunday May 31st, 2015. The starting location was Patch’s Pub and the riders left there at 1 pm to head over to Whiskey Creek, Cardinal’s Lounge, and the third stop, Triangle Lounge, which is located at the intersection where the accident occurred. It was ten dollars per hand or $15 per couple with 50/50 raffle tickets available. Live music and food were on site at the end stop and there was a great turnout. It would have been shocking had there not been, seeing as how Wally is known to be an absolute golden hearted guy. The poker raised $2,500. The two loves in Wally’s life, were and still are, working as a roofing contractor and riding, which is to him great motivation to recover and be able to hopefully, do again. However, the recovery has not been easy. The accident occurred on a Sunday evening in some rain around 6:45 pm. Because the driver of the Dodge Dually was not paying attention and driving in the wrong lane of traffic, the 26 year old left Wally no choices and before he could lay the bike down he hit the truck going anywhere from 30-35 mph. A group of people at the local Triangle Lounge rushed outside to help Wally. Along with many other injuries he was unable to stand on his leg as his tibia had protruded through the skin. He has said that he is grateful it happened where it did. Had he been the victim of this hit and run elsewhere and left alone he may have lost consciousness and could have bled out, been run over again, and possibly died right there in the road. Who knows? But thankfully, because those who came over to help and get him medical attention, he made it to the hospital where he began surgeries and his recovery. Wally now has titanium rods in his tibia and spends his days slowly recovering and attending physical therapy. He wears a boot to help his ankle heal, which in time will hopefully help aid in allowing him to walk properly again. I am thrilled to write that Wally has graduated from a walker to crutches but, unfortunately, still has a long recovery ahead

as he must continue to heal from the third degree burns and has to have a procedure to have soft tissue replaced while continuing physical therapy to help him walk without aid again. A great story to go along with all this was told to me by Wally. The day after the accident his childhood friend, Mike “Fats” Robbins, was out looking for the truck involved in the hit and run. At the time, the driver had not been arrested, and as he was trying to decide which roads to take his u joint broke him down right there at the little corner mart at the intersection of the wreck. As his friend was sitting there, pretty perturbed at the situation, he happened to look up and see a camera on the side of the corner mart building. Low and behold Mike and Senior, another one of Wally’s friends, walked into the corner mart to see if the camera had recorded the accident and to their relief it had. It had captured the license plate of the truck involved. This later led to the arrest of the driver responsible for the hit and run. In closing, Wally is determined to recover, get back to work, and ride again someday! “Don’t take your health for granted and don’t ever take the ability to walk for granted”, says Wally, “You don’t really know who you are until you deal with adverse conditions in your life and then you know who you really are. It’s how you deal with them that makes you the man you are. It’s not the things you own but the people you have around you.”

Durham H.O.G. Chapter 3382’s Heroes Ride

By: Mel Mosier - Membership Officer June 20th was smack dab in the middle of a two-week heat wave, but that didn’t deter Durham H.O.G. Chapter 3382 members Shane, Kathe, Jim & Zoe, Pete & Kris, April & Robin, Bucky, Steve B, Rick, Ronnie, Rob, and me. By the time registration was over, we had 22 people and 16 bikes and raised $440 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Jack Marvel opened Rommel Harley-Davidson early since registration was from 9-10. That allowed some of us to get a jump on the crowd and snatch up some great deals before the ride left! Shane led us out through the countryside for 3 stops before returning to Rommel H-D. Our first stop at the Bahama Ruritan Club yielded an unexpected delight. Three or four Ruritan members were there doing some yard work/landscaping and as soon as we pulled in, they came up and offered us ice water and use of the bathrooms, if needed. When we didn’t take them up on that and go inside, they brought the ice water and cups to us. Amazingly friendly people and we thank them for their hospitality! Two more stops and we were back at Rommel H-D to draw the final card. After the poker run sheets were reviewed, we announced the winners: Dolly Strickland won best hand and Kristy Ferguson won worst hand. Both donated their winnings back to WWP. By this time, Rommel’s BBQ Fest had started. Jack had a food truck serving several different meals and the band started up playing some good ole rock-n- roll. As part of the BBQ Fest, the Ladies Of Harley set up a bake sale tent for donations. Kathe brought frozen grapes and brownies, I brought sliced watermelon, Pam S. supplied Rice Krispy treats and Jerry brought banana bread and Nutella brownies. Jim & Zoe supplied the much needed tent covering it all from the blazing sun! LOH raised $90. There were some generous people there, that’s for sure! HOG and Rommel H-D also put on a tattoo contest. Participation was a little light at first but we eventually got approximately 12 people signed up. JV of Eccentric Ink in Oxford judged the contest for us and the winners were Greg Youngblood for best full sleeve/leg/back, Kristy Ferguson for best small black & white, Tina Smith for best small color and yours

truly for best large black & white, although in all fairness, I must admit that I was the only one in that category! Rommel H-D supplied the trophies and I think we all walked happy and proud of our ink. April and I managed to get a $160 in the 50/50 pot and Tom Ford walked away with an extra $80 in his pocket! He told me he never wins but Lady Luck proved him wrong this day! I have to give out some thanks because this would not have been possible without the following: Jack & Donna Marvel and the whole crew at Rommel H-D for letting us piggyback our poker run onto their event as well as their participation in the 50/50, the tat contest and donations to the LOH bake sale; Kris Wetterling for doing the poker run registration (she said she’d help me and then she ended up doing it all herself and then some which allowed me to get other things set up), Kathe & Zoe for manning the LOH table and trying to sell Zaxby’s coupon books, April for helping me with the 50/50 (we make a great team!), Shane for leading the ride and running the tat contest (with our friends Lance and Dolly helping, too), Bucky, Jim and Zoe for showing up early to help set up, and everyone who helped tear it all down (too many to list but you know who you are). Some of you did multiple jobs but instead of listing you on every job, I tried to spread it out :-). Trust me, I know you did more than you’re listed for above. I hope I didn’t leave anyone off this list, but if I did, it was not intentional.

Boozy Creek - Muddy Creek Story and photo by Alan Dockery I think this was the wettest Fourth of July I’ve ever spent at Boozy Creek, TN, for the Peacemakers MC of Kingsport Field Meet and Dirt Drags. But you know some bikers are going to show up and raise some racket no matter what. Just wear boots you don’t mind getting muddy cause it was squishy walking around. I hung out by the food, beer and vendors where it’s paved. From there I could see the bands and games. Saturday afternoon, while the sun was shining, folks gathered down front for some games. At Boozy Creek the games all involve drinking beer. First thing they do is ice down a keg while getting ready. To start each game; bat spin, ski race, plunge her race, nut sack swing, wheelbarrow race, bouncy ball, and more; when they said “Go!” you had to chug a beer before starting down the track. And there is usually a beer pit stop at the turn around. Biker games are already funny, but y’all should have seen them in the rain. It was slick, bust-yourbutt, muddy. Folks stopping too quickly often ended down and horizontal. We got another rain shower, but it didn’t stop

the games. It turned out to be a good thing since some of the women competitors had lost their bathing suits. The sun came in and out for the rest of the afternoon while folks did some other contests such as keg toss and burnouts. The Peacemakers had some good bands this year and since the stage is covered and dry, they could play. After dark they put on the usual good fireworks show. Then it was back to dancing to Ali Randolph and the Outta Luck band. With the track being muddy there was no way to race, so by noon Sunday I headed East back over the mountains. Boozy Creek is as fun as the name sounds. When the weather is nice we kick up the noise and sling dirt with partying, bike games, nice bike show, and drag racing. The Peacemakers hold the Boozy Creek Field Meet and Dirt Drags twice a year in the East Tennessee hills around Mothers’ Day and Fourth of July.

Great American Cook Out At Indian Of Greensboro

By: Rick Gammons The folks at Indian Motorcycle of Greensboro did a benefit for the USO on June 13th. This was to honor the troops and help the USO to help them. Hot dogs and BBQ were on the menu and it was really good! Several people from around here were there, plus several from southern Virginia. I saw a “rare” Moto Guzzi there among all of the other bikes attending this event. And, as usual, Monty and Bob were busy inside. Monty was completing an order for an Indian motorcycle and Bob was busy selling a previously owned Harley-Davidson. Two bikes already sold before lunch! Folks, these guys know how to deal. They sell more motorcycles per week than anyone else I know of. But, even so, they still take the time to honor our service personnel. Monty Hendrix said, “What a great time! It was our honor to host this event to raise funds for our troops through the NC USO. Chef Jimmy did an amazing job on the BBQ. Bill West was phenomenal with the music. The bikes were rumbling and

the people were the best! Great event. Thank you for everyone’s support.” The USO (United Service Organization) is a non-profit organization that provides programs, services and entertainment for our US troops and their families. The USO is partnered with the Department of Defense, but is not a government organization. They rely on donations from corporations and individuals. So, let’s remember the USO. By: Kickstart & Donut Saturday, June 27th, was a day to remember. Teresa Martin hosted another event from 10 am to 10 pm despite the weather we had. People got wet, but the show must go on. People from all around attended this event for the great cause; Juvenile Diabetes. There was an auction that a lot of sponsors that donated lots of interesting items. There was also an auction for some special items that took place that helped raise some funds. They had a water slide on the field to entertain the kids. Every entry ticket that was purchased came with a meal ticket to get some of South Carolina’s finest BBQ. We had numerous vendors showing up to support this great cause and we got to see a lot of smiling faces

from all over South Carolina helping make this a successful event. We would like to thank the bands that came out and played in the rain and heat. No Prior Notice took the stage first, followed up by Mickie Blooze & Jewlz, Vince McKinley, and then ended it with Wide Open Band. A big thanks goes out to Teresa and Danny Martin that offered their location for the Charity Outdoor Concert For Juvenile Diabetes. Teresa also helped out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine by inviting us out so we could come out and celebrate this event and put our banner and magazines on display. She also helped out by announcing we were there and promoted the CWC ABATE to help sell a lot of tickets for the big outdoor grill to be raffled off on July 26. We can’t wait to go back next year to see how much bigger this event gets. Thanks to all that came out and supported this wonderful cause.

Smoke Out 16 At The Rock

Story and photo by Alan Dockery What a hot time we had for Smoke Out 16 at Rockingham Dragway, NC, the third weekend of June. It was hot in lots of ways. Hot weather. Hot bikes. Hot bands. Hot babes, and so much more at the coolest bike rally on the East Coast. The Smoke Out 16, sponsored by The Horse Backstreet Choppers Magazine, kicks off Friday afternoon and I suggest you make a slow pass through the vendors and exhibitors first thing. See who is there, who you want to come back and talk to more, start thinking about what you need to buy. Keep a schedule in your pocket since there are things going on all over the property. Bobby Hoover and Billy Leonard started the action on the dragstrip with their nitro-fueled Pro Dragsters. Then for a couple hours it was 50’s style grudge match drag racing. Yeah, anyone could roar down the famous Rockingham dragstrip. Challenge your buddies to see just how quick they really are. Edge, Smoke Out 16 promoter, always books cool bands for the weekend. Derrick Stark started us off kinda mellow, and then Cutthroat Shamrock brought the fans to a frenzy. Between bands, Hammer, Englishman, Edge and other Horse staff did the official welcome. Then my favorite, Rebel Son, took the stage. They always draw a big crowd with their rowdy honky tonk rockabilly. Between sets, the crowd stayed down front for the Wet T-shirt Contest with Roadside Marty. That man runs the best wet T-shirt contest. Even if you ain’t into being down front for a good view, it’s real entertaining to watch Marty as he narrows the 20 or so women down to the crowd favorite. After the main Smoke Out area closes for the evening, the party moves to the campground. You could walk around and visit with the many thousands of people camping there. Hundreds of folks headed over to the burnout pit to watch guys rev

it up for the Smoke Out. The AC/DC tribute band, Problem Child, played the campground stage after midnight. Saturday the Smoke Out 16 shifts into high gear. The Anvil Toss contest let some men and women show how far they can chuck a heavy piece of iron. Early in the afternoon there was a Painted Ladies contest. The Horse staff provided the paints and brushes, and we judged folks’ “artwork.” The main stage was often a busy place with a Chili Pepper Eating contest, T-Shirt Attire contest and The Horse staff giving away some cool prizes, too. Throughout the event there are small things, too, like the Pinstriping Class by Jillian Rossi at the Hellcat Pinstriping booth. Roller Derby was back with the Columbia, SC, Regulators putting on a demo for us. After the roller derby, Bobby and Billy cranked up the Harley thunder again with their drag bikes and the strip was open for more grudge races. For many of us the best thing about the Smoke Out is the bike shows and contests. Several folks entered the Amateur Chop-Off. New this year was a class for what Edge called Hard Knocks Custom Bikes. I’ve told y’all for years that the ride in bike show is always the best of the year. Trophies were presented for the best of the Pro and Joes. The Saturday afternoon bands this year included The Three Horsemen lead by Englishman, Skye Paige and Phillip Roebuck on the main stage. Folks still love the mini-bike races, organized by O’Malleys Speed n Kustom. It’s a hoot to see bikers entering cool little mini-bikes and dressing up in super hero costumes, too. We ran a few heats, had a Powder Puff Race for the ladies and even ran a sidecar race. New this year was a Drift Trike Race sponsored by Austin Martin Originals. Drift trikes are powered big wheel type machines that look like the back half of a go-cart with a bicycle front end. Too much fun! After supper The Horse Staff took the stage to honor bike

show winners, Stampede, and Long Road riders. This is supposedly the last year for the Stampede, a cross-country chopper race from California to the Smoke Out. Roadside Marty fired up the crowd for another great Wet T-shirt Contest. Saturday night’s band was the Koffin Kats, a punk rock psychobilly band from Detroit. They cut their European tour short just to come rock the Smoke Out. The heat and good times about wore this old guy out by midnight. But folks still made it to the campground stage for Skye Paige and more burnouts as Smoke Out 16 slowly wound down. Several Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff members were at the Smoke Out 16. The Ride For Mike Helms

By: Michael Hughes Saturday, June 20th was a bright, hot, and sunny Saturday here in Charlotte, NC and the weather made for a perfect backdrop as a group of dedicated friends, family, and acquaintances gathered to ride together to benefit Mike Helms, who had suffered a massive stroke. The group of riders gathered at In the Wind in Huntersville, NC around 11am and was treated to a visit just prior to departure by the guest of honor himself, Mike Helms. Given the effect that the stroke has had on Mike, his visit before we all headed out made the poker run that followed even more special. Following the expert guidance of some of Mike’s closest friends, the group made its way north to Mooresville to the first stop of the ride at Sideline’s in Mooresville, NC. Anyone who has ridden in that area on a Saturday afternoon knows what the traffic can be like, so special thanks are due to those who managed to get the pack through the traffic and intersections. Once we’d all drawn cards and enjoyed a cold beverage to stave off the heat, the pack saddled up and hit the highway once again. The next stop on the run was at Horsefeather’s Roadhouse in Denver, NC. Once again, the route we took had been carefully planned to avoid the worst of the traffic around the north end of Lake Norman and the management of getting the pack through the trickier intersections was well handled. Horsefeather’s is always a popular riding destination, so our assemblage was greeted not only by the staff but by a large number of other riders. Cards drawn and parched throats cooled, we were off again. Our next stop would be Main Street Tavern in Huntersville, NC and the ride along the west side of Lake Norman is always picturesque and enjoyable. This ride was no exception! As had been the case in each of the previous legs of our trip, the route planned got us safely around the lake on a beautiful summer Saturday afternoon and we were soon pulling up in front of our destination. A special thanks to the Huntersville PD who helped us get through the intersection of Gilead Road and Old States-

ville Road with an impromptu cruiser’s arrival to blue light us through the intersection. As we enjoyed the hospitality at this stop the sky began to darken with the threat of a storm, so cards were drawn and thirsts quenched perhaps a bit more quickly than might have otherwise been the case. We mounted up once again to make the short ride back to In the Wind and managed to get there safely just before the skies opened up. Those of you who are familiar with In the Wind know the kind of hospitality that Bert and Judy put on every day in this fine establishment and the party that followed this run was exactly the kind of good times and fun that we’ve all become accustomed to there. With their help, the organizers of this ride provided those who rode as well as those who came for the post ride festivities with door prizes, outstanding BBQ, great music, and the comradery of friends united to help one of our own. The rain was short lived and the sun returned in short order. We were again fortunate to have Mike join us for the post ride fun and festivities. A number of folks stepped up to the stage to say a few words in Mike’s honor that conveyed the feelings of everyone in the crowd. Mike’s son spoke to us about and on behalf of his Dad and there were few dry eyes in the assembled mass when his remarks concluded. In the end, the combination of a 50-50 drawing, a silent auction, and the proceeds of the ride itself raised a generous sum that will help Mike and his fine family defray some of the tremendous costs that they have incurred since the stroke. Special thanks go to Yolanda Bennett, who presented Mike with a powered mobility chair in memory of her late father, Charles, who had also suffered a debilitating stroke. There is nothing finer in the world than when we all come together to do what we can for those close to us and The Ride for Mike Helms was a textbook example of this absolute truth. Thank you to everyone, too numerous to mention, who helped to make this day the outstanding success that it was!

The Flag was proudly displayed at Low Country Harley-Davidson until the morning of June 27th when it was off once again on another leg of its journey. First stop was Patriots Point, where we had a ceremony to honor our flag and to pay honor to the men and women of our country’s armed forces. US Marine Corps Major General James Livingston, a Medal of Honor recipient for heroic action in 1968 during the Vietnam War, was our guest speaker. Over a hundred people attended the ceremony on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown, including some people that were visiting the Yorktown and were just curious. After our ceremony, thirty bikes and riders escorted the Flag to Savannah Georgia for the next leg of the journey. There the flag was transferred to Savannah Harley-Davidson. By: Ed Bonham Director of Nation Of Patriots South Carolina Every year since 2010 The Nation Of Patriots organizes a national effort that pays tribute to, and honors, all of America’s armed forces - past, present, and fallen. This united effort is known as The Patriot Tour. The Patriot Tour begins during Memorial Day weekend in Wisconsin. A massive group of riders escorts one American Flag on the back of a motorcycle to Woodstock HarleyDavidson in Illinois. Upon arrival, the flag is transferred to an Illinois escort. The very next day the flag is taken to Indiana and next it travels to Minnesota and on and on for 100 days, through the lower 48 states. The flag finally makes its full circle and on Labor Day weekend lands right back in Wisconsin where it all started. The flag was scheduled to arrive in Charleston on June 26th but out of respect for the Emanuel Nine, it was delivered on June 25th to Low Country Harley-Davidson and transferred to David Snyder, Director of Charleston HOG Chapter. This was the 5th year that Low Country Harley-Davidson and Charleston HOG Chapter have been associated with Nation Of Patriots and the Tour.

Story and photo by Alan Dockery They did it again. The crew at Denver Defense in Denver, NC, had their second bike night the third week of June. It was hot day riding down Highway 16, but it was cool inside on the ranges. Denver Defense had cheap shooting lane specials for bikers that day. They raffled off some great prizes including a new pistol. I even won the poker shoot. Oh yeah, next time they have bike night y’all need to come do the poker shoot. Denver Defense has several rental guns you can shoot for fun, the poker shoot, or to check out a model you might want to buy. You can rent up to a 50 caliber Barrett rifle. For June Bike Night they had an M-60 Machine Gun you could shoot. Yeah guys, the M-60 we loved in the service years ago. Southern Riders Motorcycle Club Receives A Toast To 30 Years By: Trisha Beasley The Southern Riders Motorcycle Club has been around for a total of 34 years. The club has several chapters in both Virginia and North Carolina. On Saturday, June 6th, 2015 many of these chapters were there at 368 Slocomb Road in Fayetteville, NC to join in the festivities. It was an awesome celebration for the 30th anniversary of the Cumberland County Chapter of the Southern Riders Motorcycle Club (SRMC). These members all in attendance and salutation of the Southern Riders MC’s Mantra, “To promote brotherhood and the joy of riding motorcycles.” What a fabulous excerpt from their mission statement! The crowd, all in merriment of the event, included not only the Cumberland County Southern Riders Motorcycle Club; it also included chapters from both states. Also in attendance a total of eleven, yes 11, other clubs. There were eight additional Motorcycle Clubs and three additional Riding Clubs. The Cumberland Chapter was presented gifts from other SRMC Chapters as well as their neighboring clubs. There were a number of bestowments of gifts ranging from plaques to shadow boxes. The gifts and support were accolades for the Club’s achievements, their dedication, and longevity. These endowments were both given and received with heartfelt love and respect! Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the camaraderie with all in attendance.

The Southern Riders Motorcycle Club of Cumberland County wants to extend their “Thanks” for a superlative anniversary celebration. The club is proud that so many riders, clubs, and most importantly, friends supported the event! It’s about brotherhood! It’s about riding! They are proud of their accomplishments and will continue to strive to maintain and surpass in their efforts. They toil to lend a helping hand to their respective communities in North Carolina and Virginia. Southern Riders look forward to many more decades of riding, brotherhood, and collaboration with other clubs.

By: Lanier Law Group The summertime in North Carolina means two things: hot temperatures and “pop-up” thunderstorms. Although the weather may be perfect when you leave, you can suddenly find yourself in the midst of a downpour, so it’s a good time to talk about riding in the rain. We all get caught in wet weather, but not every rider knows how to stay safe. Here are some great tips for riding in the rain: Keep Calm And Carry On: Whether the roads are wet or dry, staying calm on your motorcycle is extremely important. It’s important to keep loose in dry conditions, but it is vital in wet conditions. Make sure to you are aware of obstacles such as painted lines, manhole covers, train tracks, and puddles that can interrupt traction. Be easy on and off the throttle and brakes, but balance your grip. When riding in the rain, endeavor to complete your turn before accelerating. Coverage Is Key: You want to stay as dry as possible, which is not easy riding in the rain. Even if you are wearing the most expensive rain suits, they will be put to the test in heavy rain. Make sure you invest in some protection if long rides are your thing because there are few people who like to get wet. Use of a full-face helmet will prevent the rain from battering your face. Think Before You Brake: Brakes can be delayed when the roads are wet, so when it becomes even more important to stop at a safe distance in rainy weather. Another tip is to watch your speed. Ride at a speed that your brakes can handle and be sure to overestimate the amount of time it will take to stop. It is critical to never apply only the front brakes because doing so may cause the front wheel to slip. In the event the rear wheel slips, you can control it, but once the front wheel starts to skid, you’re in trouble. Take care to squeeze, not grab, your brakes to prevent sudden shocks of force that can break traction. Make Yourself Seen: Visibility is also a huge concern. Find a reflective rain suit or one with bright colors. You want to make sure you’re seen at all costs due to the decreased visibility the rain causes is one of the main reasons for motor vehicle accidents. Rinse, Ride, Repeat: Although it is not that enjoyable to ride in the rain, the best way to stay safe while riding in the rain is to just do it. The more you ride the better you will be prepared next time. Practice builds confidence, which leads to being a better rider. So the next time it starts to rain, go for a quick ride and build your skills!

Myrtle Beach H-D Celebrates Independence Day

By: Everette “EZ” Short On Sunday, the 5th of July, Myrtle Beach HarleyDavidson celebrated the 4th with an Independence Day Celebration featuring fun, food and prizes with over 600 riders showing up for an afternoon festival of family friendly fun. There were activities from 11AM through 3PM with temperatures approaching the century mark, while BMX stunt riders from DK Bicycles enthusiastically jumped a ramp full of kids and wowed the crowd with airborne upside down maneuvers. Gracie the Clown was a hit with her face painting creations, a stilted walker made balloon creations, and a bouncy house was there for the kids, while the adults walked around to try out new sleds and apparel at the MB H-D Main Store. Then there was the most popular thing that you can offer a biker, with Blackbeard’s BBQ offering up free food and drinks and there were various door prizes offered up randomly throughout the day. In the end, no one blew any of their fingers off or got in the way of any fireworks, so it was a successful day of independence celebration! The event was all for a good cause and garnered over $1,100 at the end of the day for The MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). Everyone was a winner on Sunday and go to www.

The Fourth Annual Iron Chariot Ride By: Deborah R. Harman The Fourth Annual Iron Chariot Ride to benefit Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge was held June 20th. After the bikers gathered for prayer, kickstands were up at 10am in front of Greensboro HarleyDavidson. Mark Wheelihan, owner of Greensboro Harley-Davidson has partnered with Teen Challenge for the past two years, helping to make this a successful event. Sharee Sloan, Marketing Director at Greensboro H-D, was a joy to work with and helped to make everything run smoothly. The day began with breakfast donated by Starbucks and Krispy Kreme Donuts. Four of our Guilford County Sherriff Officers escorted the group of bikers as they headed down I-40 to route 68 North. Beautiful countryside views were enjoyed as the group rode the back highways. A rest break was enjoyed midway allowing bikers to fuel bikes and bodies. The high 90º temperatures were stifling, but bikers can handle it. After the short break it was back on the road,

riding south on Route 61 and winding around all the serene beauty North Carolina offers us. We ended the ride at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge on Boulevard Street in Greensboro. At Teen Challenge a delicious lunch donated by Jam’s Deli and desert from Chick-fil-A, was enjoyed. The students at Teen Challenge enjoyed having the bikers join them for lunch. It always adds excitement to have a large group of motorcycles come driving into any parking lot. It was another successful and safe ride thanks to our Sherriff’s Department. Mike and Teresa Williams and Noah’s Tribe Biker Group organized the ride. The event raised $2765 to help with the ongoing expenses of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, a residential program for men 18 years and older who find themselves struggling with drug and alcohol addictions. The students are charged $1500 for their seven month stay at Teen Challenge. The cost to Teen Challenge is approximately $19,000 per student. Private donations, churches, civic groups, and benefits such as our two golf tournaments, two banquets, two walk-a-thons, and our annual Iron Chariot Ride cover this extra cost. Dr. Bob Harman, Executive Director of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, says, “The special events we sponsor to raise funds for Teen Challenge are vital to our ongoing support. I especially like the Iron Chariot Ride because I have been a biker since I was 16 years old. I find God can speak to boys when they fish and when they ride their motorcycle.” If you know someone who may need help from Teen Challenge, please call us at 336-292-7795. The coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside and asked, “Do you understand what co-operation is? What a team is?” “Yes, coach”, replied the boy. “Do you understand that what matters is we win or lose as a team?” The boy nodded yes. The coach continued, “I’m sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn’t argue, curse, attack the umpire, or call him names. Do you understand all that?” Again, the boy nodded yes. “And when I take you out of the game so that another boy gets a chance to play, it’s not good sportsmanship to call your coach a dumb a$$ or sh!thea% is it?” “No, coach.” “Good,” said the coach, “Now go over there and explain all that to your grandmother!”

Whatever it is, it is better in the wind. A biker, who just moved from Ohio to South Carolina, walks into a bar and orders three mugs of Bud. He sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more. The bartender approaches and tells the cowboy, “You know, a mug goes flat after I draw it. It would taste better if you bought one at a time.”. The cowboy replies, “Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is an Airborne Ranger, the other is a Navy Seal, both serving overseas somewhere. When we all left our home in Texas, we promised that we’d drink this way to remember the days when we drank together. So I’m drinking one beer for each of my brothers and one for myself.” The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there. The biker becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way. He orders three mugs and drinks them in turn. One day, he comes in and only orders two mugs. All the regulars take notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, “I don’t want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss.” The biker looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns in his eyes and he laughs. “Oh, no, everybody’s just fine,” he explains, “It’s just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking.” “Hasn’t affected my brothers though....”

Hillary Clinton goes to her doctor for a physical, only to find out that she’s pregnant. She is furious! Here she is about to run for President and this has happened to her. She calls Bill on the phone and immediately starts screaming: “How could you have let this happen? With all that’s going on right now, you go and get me pregnant! How could you???!!! I can’t believe this! I just found out I am five weeks pregnant and it’s all your fault!!! Your fault!!! Well, what have you got to say???” There is nothing but dead silence on the end of the phone. She screams again, “Did you hear me???!!!” Finally, she hears Bill’s very, very quiet voice. In a barely audible whisper, he says, “Who is this?” A blonde orders a beer. The bartender fills the mug and slides it down the bar. It hits the blonde woman’s boobs and splashes all over them. The bartender goes over, retrieves the mug and licks the beer off her boobs. Each time the blonde calls for another beer this happens. So after the third beer, a guy decides to help the bartender out. The next time the bartender hit her boobs, the man jumps up and starts to lick her breasts. She decks him! He is lying on the floor moaning, “Jeez, lady, why do you let the bartender do it and not me?” “Hellooo!” says the blonde, “he has a licker license!”

Only a biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window. The Reverend Francis Norton woke up Sunday morning and, realizing it was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided he just had to play golf. So he told the Associate Pastor that he was feeling sick and convinced him to say Mass for him that day. As soon as the Associate Pastor left the room, Father Norton headed out of town to a golf course about forty miles away. This way he knew he wouldn’t accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish. Setting up on the first tee, he was alone. After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church! At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while looking down

For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.” The dog said, “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?” And God saw it was good. When God created the monkey he said, “Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.” The monkey said, “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?” And God, again saw it was good. When God created the cow he said, “You must go into the field with the farmer all day long, work under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.” The cow said, “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?” And God agreed it was good. When God created man he said, “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.” But man said, “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty plus the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back? That makes eighty years, okay?” God agreed, and that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we look like a wizened monkey and do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Tempted Well, it’s hard to believe how fast this summer is passing by. So much is taking place in our country so quickly it’s hard to keep up with. One of the things in the forefront of the news is what is happening to the southern heritage. Another is the definition of marriage and the trans-gender uprising if that’s what you call it. There are so many things going on at real time, live streaming, in your face speed. The Internet is an awesome tool. You can look up manuals on how to fix almost anything, order parts to fix it and even books on how to operate what ever you just repaired. Trouble is, like any tool it can be abused. I recently saw a face book challenge to remove the confederate flag from private property, really? With just a few keystrokes and the click of a mouse, hatred is suddenly created. In the word of God, James 1:12 reads: “Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he will receive the crown of life that is promised to them that love Him: Satan is the real enemy. He is trying to get us hate, to divide our nation, cause moral decay, and destroy the church. Before you let all the events of the world make you mad enough to do something regretful, hop on your bike, ride away, pray. Even if you attend church, or read the word, or live a Godly life, God is willing and available to listen to you.

Ask Jesus into your heart, so when you are tried, you won’t go through it alone. May the lord bless us all and keep us. Pray for our nation because it is, after all, our home
