But now we seem to have broken through to Spring. Spring IS upon us and it has vastly improved my attitude and raised the level of my motivation. Many of us have already had that first shirtsleeve ride of the year. Another good way to realize that spring has sprung is to look at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. By: Wendy Rogers This April 28th will make 13 years! It is spring again and we know what that means! Yes, it’s time for our Annual Hogs & Rags Rally. The totally police escorted ride goes from Fayetteville, NC to Wild Wings Café at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina’s Barefoot Landing. It is a great ride, and a great time there, for a great cause! This event is part of the Dogwood Festival of Fayetteville and has been growing every year to become the biggest motorcycle day rally in North Carolina. The Hogs & Rags Rally is the premier community charity event that combines convertibles, muscle cars, and all types of motorcycles, great food, good causes, and a good time. All makes and models of bikes, trikes, any vehicle, street rods, and muscle cars are welcome. Let me be clear about this: Even though the name of the event is Hogs & Rags and hogs usually represent HarleyDavidson motorcycles and rags usually means convertible cars (that is how the event started), we invite all motorcycles and cars to participate. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. This is a wonderful event, which supports wonderful causes and we want everyone to know they are welcome. Last year we had over 300 participants. WE WANT YOU! Also, don’t miss the PRE-RIDE PARTY and registration at Mac’s (482 McPherson Church Road, Fayetteville) on Friday night April 27th from 6-9pm. There will be food, live music, and a good time! This year’s premier sponsor is Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson of Fayetteville, NC, along with many other great sponsors that join in together to make this such a great event. Combined with all the participants that come, this makes for a successful event. This year our great event will be led by the Astro’s General Manager, David Lane and his wife, Lindsey. They will be leading us along with a Sheriff Deputy Escort, all the way to Myrtle Beach, SC. Even though there is a sheriff escort for the entire ride from Fayetteville to Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Hogs & Rags organizers know that keeping hundreds of riders safe is a huge undertaking to have a fun and safe ride. Before the ride, there will be a safety briefing and it covers the route, hand and arm signals, things to do in a ride to make the group as safe as possible. While everyone loves a good time, raising money for a charity is a big part of the Hogs & Rags mission. For anyone who rides or chooses to donate, this is where your money will go: American Cancer Society. The goal of the American Cancer Society (ACS) is to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from cancer. They are committed to fighting cancer through balanced programs of research, education, patient service, advocacy, and rehabilitation. Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation. Despite ongoing efforts to provide reading and educational resources to our nation’s youth, illiteracy is still a problem in the United States. Founded in 2011, this charity provides literacy educa-

tion and character development resources FREE to children K-6th grade. Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation’s mission is to improve literacy, education, and character development among America’s youth by providing support for various early literacy and learning-based initiatives nationwide. The foundation approves grants to qualified projects and institutions that endeavor to instill strong reading and education skills and solid character-development traits in America’s Youth. Registration for the Hogs & Rags Rally starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, where there will be coffee and donuts. Kickstands up at 8:45 a.m. The Cumberland County Sheriff will escort the riders to Altman’s farm, the Rockin’ “A” Ranch, in White Oak, where everyone will be served a “Low Country” Buffet breakfast. Then back in the saddle again at 10:45 am. The next stop will be at the NC/SC State line in Tabor City for a water and bathroom break, and then ending at Barefoot Landing at Wild Wings Cafe in Myrtle Beach, SC to enjoy your tasty and filling lunch. There will be a 50/50, door prizes, music, and great socializing for a great cause. The entire event ends around 3 p.m. leaving plenty of time to make it back to Fayetteville or to enjoy other surrounding activities in Myrtle Beach. Registration is $50 per person. This includes a T-shirt, breakfast, lunch, and a great contribution to these great charities. So please plan on joining us on April 28th this year. Mike’s Cowboy Chili Challenge Story and photo by Alan Dockery Oh, what a yummy day we had the last Saturday in February. T-shirt weather at Son of the South Saloon, Longview, NC, meant we could enjoy the afternoon for Mike’s Cowboy Chili Challenge. Lots of folks showed Entrants had to cook outside over up to hang out, talk a wood fire. with old friends, fuss about the long cold winter, and sample chili. Mike told me he wanted to do something like this from the time he opened SOS. He owns the oldest real biker bar in Hickory, The Wizard Saloon, and has outside parties there during the Summer. But the Cowboy Chili Challenge was a little different. Entrants had to cook outside over a wood fire. Mike had some old big truck rims welded up that made great cookers. Being the first annual chili challenge and a cold Winter, only a few folks showed up to cook. Thanks to Freddy Foster, Richard Fleck, and Renee Waggoner, all from the Hickory area. I sure liked Freddy’s chili since it was Carolina Style. Richards was pretty good, too, and he served up a bunch in a cast iron pan bigger than mine. But Renee won with her Texas Style chili. Renee and Freddy got trophies and Renee’s name goes on the plaque that will stay on the wall in Son of the South

Saloon. Looked like the folks enjoyed the Cowboy Chili Challenge. Y’all oughta come on down and serve up your best next time Mike hauls out the cookers and fire wood.

By: Matt Danielson Our friends at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have put out their yearly report on motorcycle crashes and fatalities. The latest report focuses on data collected for the year 2016. According to NHTSA, motorcycle fatalities rose 5.1% between 2015 and 2016. The report also states that 25% of those fatalities were related to alcohol impairment. Finally, NHTSA indicates that the lack of mandatory motorcycle helmet laws nationwide is a contributing factor to the rise in motorcycle fatalities. When you read the report, it is easy to conclude that motorcyclists have a serious safety problem on our hands, and to some degree, I concur. The truth is that traffic fatalities as a whole have been on the rise for the past few years. For some reason, either intentionally or unintentionally, NHTSA seems to publish data on motorcycle fatalities in a subtly different way than it does data on motor vehicle fatalities as a whole. In its overview of fatal motor vehicle crashes, NHTSA reported that the 5.6% increase in motor vehicle fatalities in 2016 is lower than the 8.4% increase from 2014 to 2015. No such language appears in NHTSA’s publication concerning motorcycle fatalities, despite the fact that the 5.1% increase in motorcycle fatalities in 2016 is lower than the 8% increase in motorcycle fatalities from 2014 to 2015. Similarly, when we read the two NHTSA reports together, we see that fatalities due to alcohol impairment are an overall traffic safety problem, not just a motorcycle problem. Because NHTSA issues a yearly report which focuses only on motorcycle fatalities and injuries, it is easy for people to conclude that many contributing factors are unique to motorcyclists. In its latest report on motorcycle traffic fatalities, NHTSA claims that the 25% rise in alcohol related motorcycle fatalities is the highest percentage of any other vehicle classification. Yet in its overview of fatal motor vehicle crashes, NHTSA reported that 28% of overall motor vehicle traffic fatalities in 2016 were due to alcohol impairment. motorcycle fatalities due to alcohol impairment. Let’s be clear: any traffic fatality due to alcohol impairment is one too many. That being said, alcohol impaired driving is not a problem unique to motorcyclists. Finally, and here is where I get in trouble with some of my readers, there is the assertion that the lack of motorcycle helmet laws nationwide is contributing to the rise in motorcycle fatalities. I am not advocating that anyone wear or not wear a motorcycle helmet if they happen to be in one of the thirtyone states that allow adults to make their own choice on the matter; I am merely presenting NHTSA’s own data as a whole so that each reader can make up his or her own mind. First, NHTSA fails to explain why the lack of helmet laws has had an impact on the rise in motorcycle fatalities but not on motor vehicle fatalities as a whole, which have risen at a greater rate than motorcycle fatalities. Secondly, when we look at the motorcycle fatality rate per 100,000 registered motorcyclists between the jurisdictions that have mandatory motorcycle helmet laws and those that don’t, we see less than a 1% difference. Finally, and perhaps most troubling, is what NHTSA considers to be a motorcycle for the purposes of the entire report on motorcycle fatalities. The report on motorcycle fatalities includes data from crashes involving not only two and three-wheeled motorcycles, but off-road motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, mini bikes, and pocket bikes. Data from accidents involving offroad motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, mini bikes, and pocket bikes, should not be used in any serious study of motorcycle fatalities, nor should such data be cited in any serious discussion on ways to reduce motorcycle traffic fatalities; doing so would be comparable to using data from fatalities involving four-wheelers and go-carts to formulate safety strategies for our nation’s highways. At the end of the day, motorcycle fatalities have been up, and that is a bad thing. We motorcyclists have the primary responsibility to reverse this troubling trend. But it is not a trend unique to us; it is a problem shared by all motorists, and it is the responsibility of all motorists to solve the problem. While we could debate this complex issue for years, let me offer my personal advice. First, if you want to have a drink, leave the alcohol for after you are finished riding or driving for the day. Secondly, slow down and pay attention to others on the road. Put down the telephone; that message can wait. Look less at the GPS and more at traffic around you. Missing a turn won’t run you nearly as late as plowing into the car or motorcycle in front of you. Stop playing with that sleek touch screen that your new vehicle came with (Yes, motorcyclists, I’m talking to you, too). Whether we are riding or driving, our primary responsibility is the safety of ourselves, our passengers, and each and every other motorist with whom we share the road. CMA Annual Day Of Prayer By: Wally Wersching The Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA) held their annual “Day Of Prayer” throughout the country on Sunday, March 4th this year. Groups of Christian bikers got together to pray for everything they deemed needing help. Locally, the “Warriors For Christ” Chapter of the CMA met at the Cherokee County Veterans Appreciation Park in Gaffney, SC, which is next to the Cherokee County Veterans Museum at about 2 PM. Sunday’s weather was the best of the week with temps in the upper 50’s, and a cloudless, bright Carolina blue sky. I dressed for the chilly temps and rode ”Miss Vickie”. When I left home at about 1:45, I headed south on Rte. 18. I followed Rte. 18 into Gaffney. I arrived at the park about 2:15 and was surprised to see that there was a small group of bikers standing around talking. They even had a CMA tent set up. Last year, when I was there at the same time, I was alone for a while until the group rode in. The park, which was dedicated in 2010, has a beautiful display of monoliths with names of veterans, along with little areas on each side for remembering. I started to walk around the memorial – it is such a beautiful place. I always like to read the names on the marble. Every monolith is labeled with the branch of service, and the honoree’s number in that branch. The names are arranged alphabetically so it’s easy to look up a specific name. There is also a list kept in the podium during the summer months. There are a couple beautiful statues in the park, too, along with musical rocks that play patriotic music. One statue is one that I have seen replicated many times is the one with the helmet on the rifle butt, and the boots. It is called the “Fallen Soldier Battle Cross”. It’s very moving. The more I stood there looking at it the more it was talking to me. The other one is an eagle with an inscription on the base by Theodore Roosevelt. Too many people had to die for us to enjoy our freedom, and this park is a memorial to them. The group of bikers might not all be CMA members, but most belong to a Christian biker ministry of some kind. Many churches have a group who ride motorcycles together. Some have identifying colors on the back of their vests, but some are like me - just friends. Everybody was getting acquainted. I shared some of The

Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines with them. Then, “Crawdad” (the president of the CMA chapter) invited them to get in a circle on the Veterans Monument to pray. After they walked to the flags, everybody held hands, and each person in turn said a prayer for something special to them. Their goal is to spread the word and increase the group size every year. Next year, mark your calendars for the first Sunday in March. We’ll meet again at the Cherokee County Veterans Appreciation Park about 2 PM. See you there! After the prayer service was over, the museum volunteer came out, and invited everybody into the museum. It had been a while since I was inside the museum. Most of the times I came to visit, it was closed. It is staffed by volunteers, and sometimes it is difficult for them to keep to the schedule. I walked around outside to enjoy the small park that surrounds the museum which has a helicopter, small jet plane, a jeep, and a memorial. I took a few pictures. Even though the building is small, it is full of very interesting artifacts from the revolutionary war to the present conflict. The volunteer was very helpful telling me about the exhibits. I gave him a couple magazines to pass the time waiting for visitors to come in. We are about the same age and have similar memories about serving in the military during the Vietnam War era. I signed the guest book. The names in the book help get funds for the museum. It’s also how they know how many people had stopped in. The museum is mainly about the people who came from Cherokee County. The Veterans Museum is only open from 9:00 to 11:00 on Saturday, and 2:00 to 4:00 on Sunday. I love these small museums. They capture, and protect the local history, and are bottomless pits of valuable information. It’s a great way to spend some time learning about our past. First Woman To Attempt To Break The World’s Fastest Motorcyclist Record Of 377 MPH Crashes Doing 344 MPH By: Lou Fischer – BonnevileStories. com Valerie Thompson, AKA “The Queen Of Speed”, crashed while attempting to break the world’s fastest motorcycle record of 376.36 mph. Thompson survived the horrific crash when her streamlined bike went airborne then crashed at 343.7 mph. Miraculously, Thompson walked away from the accident with only minor bumps and bruises. This marks the first crash ever over 300 mph where the driver walked away. Conditions were reported by the team to be ideal for their attempt at the record, but once Thompson had passed the three-mile marker – at a speed of 299 mph – the rear-end of the 25-foot long streamliner raised into the air before the parachutes deployed, helping to stabilize the crash. Valerie was attempting to break the record at Australia’s Lake Gairdner World Speed Trials when something went wrong during her run and the bike fell onto its side, digging a deep trench into the salt flats and spreading wreckage over nearly two miles. She is the first woman to attempt to break the record. She broke her own personal best record of 304.263 mph with a run of 328.467 mph piloting the Team “7” Streamliner a few days earlier, making her officially the fastest

woman on a motorcycle ever. Thompson is the only female driver in a two-wheeled vehicle over 300 mph. Thompson holds eight land speed records on a variety of bikes ranging from Harley-Davidsons to BMWs and is a member of sevenland speed racing 200 mph clubs and one 300 mph club. The world was hoping to see an all-time FIM World Record being recorded from the American speed-queen and her 500 hp, 3000 cc, dual overhead cam, 4 valve, turbocharged V4 motorcycle. You are asked to provide a headcount of any family or close friends that might want to sit with you at the head table. The ceremony will take place approximately 4 hours from home. You scratch your head knowing your wife will attend, there’s a very slight chance one of the kids might think about it for a microsecond, and you know your best friend could slug you if you tell him he needs to give up a Saturday night to attend. That’s how it is for most of us. And then, there is Bernie Shankman! If you’ve been riding around South Carolina for any length of time, chances are you’ve seen, heard, or read something about Mr. Bernie. Davidson had won the defense contract and provided Mr. Bernie, as most folks like to fondly call him, a war time H-D ride. Years later, Bernie was again called to service and this time shipped off for combat duty in Korea, where he earned a Purple Heart. Although Bernie’s war time service is far behind him, he is still active in the American Legion and the Patriot Guard. He is a permanent flag bearer for the Vet Charity Run leading thousands of bikes annually to the Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia, SC. He has also led the Patriot Tour as their flag bearer year after year when the flag is delivered to Harley Haven in Irmo, SC. There are so many stories about Mr. Bernie. There’s the flat track racing in numerous states; a necessary solution to his speeding ticket problem. There are the stories about his array of bikes over almost 80 years of riding - a Triumph, BMW’s, an Indian, BSA, Matchless, a Goldwing, his Ultra Classic that was later fitted with a sidecar for his wife, the H-D Heritage he rode when traveling solo less than five years ago and now,

his trike. There’s the story of his trip from Washington State to Washington, DC ridden in 3 days (pre-interstate) on that Indian. There’s the stories of his charity work giving nursing home residents rides in his sidecar. Oftentimes his passengers were younger than he was! If you haven’t done the math yet, our beloved Bernie is 3 months shy of 95 years old and STILL RIDING! Mr. Bernie is a lifetime member of HOG and rides in the Central SC HOG chapter. We fellow chapter members have a special fondness for our beloved, oldest member and feel quite protective. I can tell you it is not easy trying to coddle someone who rides faster than most of us. It’s a bit of an unspoken rule in our chapter that someone try to accompany Mr. Bernie before and after our scheduled rides. On one particularly long ride back from the mountains, a fellow rider and myself offered to ride home with Mr. Bernie

and about 20 minutes from his home I suggested he lead the way. I admit I possess a speed itch and am comfortable pushing it. Whoa baby! Mr. Bernie left our group with two of us in tow and I know that man was laughing his head off as he tried to lose his tail. We stuck to him, but I can tell you, he did not make it easy! On another recent HOG ride returning from Landrum, a fellow member pulled up next to me and suggested we take a break for Mr. Bernie’s sake. So, 20+ bikes all pulled off at the Kinard’s Rest Area on I-26, minus one. You guessed it. I saw Bernie pulling away at break neck speeds as we were all pulling into the rest stop. I know he was having a good chuckle over that one too! And he pulled the disappearing trick returning from outside of Atlanta, GA last summer. We never did catch up to him that day – a 350-mile ride day in 100-degree weather that ended with thunderstorms. But, we are insistent in one area. When inclement weather hits, we do pull off and make Bernie take time to don his raingear. We know we can’t keep him off road for too long, but we do demand he stay dry and warm. This is our beloved Bernie, and no one wants to risk him catching cold. Mr. Bernie actually had two hospitalizations this past year. His recuperation involved physical therapy which he attacked

with a vengeance. When his therapists asked him his goals, he simply stated “To get back on his bike.” Well, God bless those therapists because they took this 94-year young gentleman seriously and put him through the works. dismount until he could once again do it alone. At home, his nurse continued physical therapy using his bike. Wherever this man goes, people fall in love with him! Bernie was back in the saddle in time to participate in the Legacy Ride this past April. Returning to the beginning dilemma of who might wish to attend a formal ceremony, four hours from home, where you would be recognized for some personal achievement. In Mr. Bernie’s case, it was a testament of just how deeply this man is loved, admired, and respected by so many. On February 24, 2018, Mr. Bernie Shankman, 3 months shy of 95 years young, was inducted into the SC Biker Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held at Suck Bang Blow in Murrells Inlet, SC. There were 5 inductees and I congratulate each of them. But, our beloved Mr. Bernie brought the house down. Over half the building was reserved for the headcount of 60 who rsvp’d. Sixty folks dropped whatever they were doing, and with little notice, made last minute plans to support and celebrate with Bernie. What a testament to Bernie Shankman! Bernie Shankman is renowned for his nearly 8 decades in the saddle. He is also known for his diverse riding experiences, his charity work, his patriotism, and his passion for riding. But, I truly don’t believe that’s why Bernie Shankman received more nominations than anyone else in the history of the SC Biker Hall of Fame. I don’t think the standing room only crowd used his riding history as the gauge for travelling out of town to celebrate Bernie’s induction. I believe the reason Suck Bang Blow experienced such a remarkable turn out for one unassuming man was simple – LOVE. We all love Bernie deeply! He is the epitome of kindness and modesty. He is humble, loving, gentle, and always and forever wears that smile we all love so much. As he stated when he accepted his award, “I have never met a biker that wasn’t a friend!” Yes, Mr. Bernie Shankman deserves to be inducted into the SC Biker Hall of Fame, and while a standing room only crowd of die-hard bikers traveled to witness and celebrate his induction, there wasn’t one among us that questioned why. Bernie Shankman represents honor and goodness in a world often represented less kindly. God bless Bernie and what he exhibits as the best humanity has to offer. We are, always and forever, proud and humbled to call him friend. Congratulations Bernie! You make us proud.

Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson Butt Pickin’ Contest

By: Kris Weiss It was a beautiful March day which started off a little cool but warmed up nicely for all of the activities planned at the new Tobacco Road HarleyDavidson on March 17th. The day started off with vendors setting up to sell their products including Birdie Beads Patch Sewing and the folks from Love Mutts Rescue. The Blood Connection Blood Mobile started sucking blood at 9am and the eight BBQ cookers were in full swing with their butts on the grill. The atmosphere for the day was set by Oak City Bluegrass. They were easy to listen to and had a great audience. The emcee kept the crowd engaged with announcements of everything that was happening inside and out. He introduced the judges who would be tasting 8 differently prepared BBQ dishes. Hundreds of people welcomed the judges including Brad Carter who is the chief cook for the award-winning team, The Bomb Squad. He was joined by one of his teammates,

Alan Coutts. His team sat out this year but will be back for the Wing Cook-Off later on this summer. The Emcee, Tim O’Connell, even got in on the judging action this year. The variety of the BBQ was wide and varied, with each team putting their own twist on the cooked pig. Inside the dealership, the Prize Wheel was spinning! Everyone who wore green on this St. Patty’s day got to spin for great prizes. The bell was ringing quite a bit, as well, as riders set off on a new adventure with their brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycle. A particular highlight of the day was the Triumph Bonneville Bobber that was raffled off to a very lucky winner. The USO of NC had been selling $10 raffle tickets since September in order to help raise funds for their wonderful organization. Citrix of downtown Raleigh, along with Triumph Raleigh, sponsored this event. Nearly 3000 tickets were sold, and the winning ticket belonged to Gilberto from Raleigh. He was very happy to be the winner of this exciting motorcycle. As the fiddle and mandolin played on, hundreds of people filled the street, sampling each team’s creation with excitement and intrigue. People could be heard touting their favorite team to others while they consumed the tasty samples from each grill. Time was drawing near for them to cast their votes. When the votes were tallied, the judges chose site #4, The Redneck BBQ Lab for First Place, site #6, Buff-O-Lina for Second Place, and site #3, Lynnbank Porkers for Third Place. The People’s Choice went to site #2, Carolina Moe’s BBQ, their second win in a row. Over $2600 was raised for the Ride For Kids and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Special thanks go out to Jerry Hart and the BBQ Brothers for volunteering to park all of the cars and motorcycles that stopped by that day. Bill Furr Inducted Into NC Drag Racing Hall Of Fame Story Alan Dockery Photos by Alan Dockery & Mary Lou Brewton In my 30 years of chasing drag bikes, Bill Furr stood out as a fan favorite. His flashy red Southern Rock Top Fuel Harleys impressed fans with the quality of his build and performance on the strip. In February the Orangeburg, SC, racer was inducted into the North Carolina Drag Racing Hall of Fame. Previous inductees include; Danny Johnson, Ray Price, Elmer Trett, and Jim McClure. Bill was all smiles at the induction ceremony and said, “I enjoyed racing in North Carolina since they had better tracks. In my racing carrier, I didn’t do too shabby. The fans appreciated me and I appreciated them.” Bill retired from racing about eight years ago, so it was a thrill for fans to see him again and get autographs on old photos. “I was born in Charlotte,” he said. “Always loved North Carolina and probably raced more there than any other state. then. Racing at Farmington, Piedmont, and Rockingham. First time I went to a drag race was Pete Hill racing against the Jap bikes at Darlington in the 1970s.” Bill raced the little tracks too, such as a match race against Elmer Trett at Shady Side. Bill had a certain tough guy attitude that fans liked. I asked several folks for Bill Furr stories and Steve Earwood, Rockingham Dragway owner, had this to say “Bill was an ideal example of what appeals us to about Top Fuel Harley racers,” Steve said. “His swashbuckling, outlaw swagger exemplifies the overtone of the Old School Top Fuel Racer. Years ago, before an AHDRA Nitro Finals, we opened the track for a private test for those who needed to make early runs. I made a tour of the pits collecting the fee for the test from each racer, which was only $50. When I got to Furr, he said, ‘I’ll flip you double or nothing for the track fee.’ I agreed, flipped a quarter and Furr won, so he tested for no charge. He later admitted he didn’t have the $50 to pay for the test. As I recall, he got to the final round on Sunday.” Drag racers are gamblers in many ways. “I opened my motorcycle shop January 2, 1981,” Bill said. “Back in those days we were just having fun riding motorcycles. Always been into Harley stuff. I had a couple Triumphs and BSA and stuff back in the day, but Harleys were always my favorites. I think the first bike I rode was a 450 Honda. Then I bought a BSA and few Triumphs, but it’s been Harleys ever since.” Bill had a glass business with several installers and was doing really well. At 28 years old, he opened Orangeburg Cycle. He built the motorcycle shop because his passion was riding motorcycles. “Actually, an old friend had quit working for a Harley shop and told me he needed a job,” Bill said. “So, I

told him, you come here next week and we’ll build a damn building and open up a Harley shop.” He stayed with me for a long time until his wife got a good job and they moved. That’s how I got started.” “Well back in those days you had to be the fastest one on a Harley,” he said. “We were racing on the street. Orangeburg didn’t have a Harley shop. Me and my customers had bikes and raced all the time. Someone told me about an old Danny Johnson fuel bike that was for sale. I went and bought it. The guys told me how to crank it up. It had a four-inch tire on the back. I still have the wheel off that bike.” “I met Danny one time years ago,” Bill said. “Raced with his son. After I rode the Danny Johnson frame just a couple times, I whacked it in half. Sent it to Bonnie Truett and said I want to run an eight-inch tire on the back of this thing. He said Bill you can’t make enough horsepower to pull an eight-inch tire. I told him you just make that thing fit an eight-inch tire and I’ll handle it from there.” So, Bill jumped right into nitro-fueled machines and quickly started building faster bikes. Since it was getting hard to find skinny, flat four inch slicks he went bigger. Back in those days, there weren’t many shops providing serious race parts nor motor builders. Bill was running Sportster motors built to 96 cubic inches. He was cutting off the back end and building jack shafts. That’s how he got started in the high gear class. Continued On Page 44

Continued From Page 43 “Back in those days we were running Ironhead Sportsters,” Bill said. “I went to swap meet after swap meet after swap meet and bought all the 1976 to 1979 Sportster cases I could find and cut them in half. My mechanic, Bob, would build three motors during the week and I’d break three by Sunday.” “Running an eightinch tire was the baddest motorcycle at the race track wherever we went,” Bill said. “Eventually went from four inches to eight to ten to eleven to twelve inch tires. Now they are running 14 inch slicks.” Championships and Records Bill became a Top Fuel Harley star over the years. He won championships and became a frame and engine builder supplying other race teams. Those Orangeburg Cycle machines with

Bill twisting the throttle took two Pro Dragster, five Pro Fuel and seven Top Fuel national championships, plus one World Championship in Australia. At one time in the mid-1990s Bill held all four of the injected nitro Harley championships in the same year. Yes, he was the Top Fuel and Pro Fuel champion in both the American Motorcycle Racing Association and the All Harley Drag Racing Association. I was at The Rock in 1994, when Bill celebrated his most memorable weekend. On the starting line, we were cheering as he posted the first six second Top Fuel Harley pass. He ran two that weekend -- 6.95 and 6.97. I think I still have the T-shirt, “Furrst In The Sixes”. Not only was Bill the quickest, but fast, too. He was the first racer to back up a 200 mile an hour pass for that record at the coolest old strip, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday. That’s been the justification for racing for many years. Bill’s success lead to other racers wanting what he had. And he had ideas for modifications that others might not want to do. So, he created Dixie Frames and powered them with Hammer Motors. “Eventually by the mid-1980s I got to thinking I can cut metal and fit it,” Bill said. “I hired a guy who was a good welder. So, we started building frames and calling it Dixie Frames. Had a friend who was an electrician and he said he wanted to build frames, too.” For 15 years, they built and sold frames and body panels and such. Many are still winning races and titles to this day. For himself, Bill raced six versions of the famous Southern Rock machines. Sadly, people don’t save race bikes. They got raced, cut up, and sold and gone. I think he has Southern Rock 1 frame still hanging in a shed. Armon Furr told me where most of those bikes went over the years. Some parts are still at his shop. The frames and bodies evolved in design and materials from aluminum to carbon fiber. You can still get lots of race parts from Orangeburg Cycle shop. Eventually, old Harley motors weren’t strong enough for nitro-fuel bikes. Guys started building their own engines with custom billet cases and heads. “I think the first billet cases I got from Jim McClure,” Bill said. “Then we built our own cases. with engines and parts. The engine I remember was his 60 Degree Hammer Motor. “The 60-degree motor came about when Harley was developing the V-Rod. I thought if Harley was developing a 60-degree motor then that’s the direction we needed to go, too. Vance and Hines was building a 60-degree Pro Stock Motorcycle motor.” Marty and Jayne VandenHuevel run the American Motorcycle Racing Association and said some of the Bill Furr stories ain’t for public consumption. Again, I was there when this story happened. “I’ll never forget the first time he said to me, just before he ran, ‘When I win. If this thing is still running. Appropriately, I believe that was at Farmington,” Marty said. Yes, it was and the fans loved hearing that bike turn around and the poppity poppity poppity of nitro as Bill idled back to the starting line. Jay Turner currently dominates in Top Fuel Harley. He has won the National Hot Rod Association and International Hot Rod Association championships multiple times. He brings a team of the best Top Fuel Harleys to the strip and credits Furr with helping his start in the sport. “Bill put me on my first really fast bike. A Pro Fuel bike in about 1989. It was stock Sportster cases with iron heads and was his old bike,” Jay said. “We went to Rockingham for the

finals, I think it was 1994. I qualified number one on his bike in Pro Fuel, set the ET record, and beat him in the final round. Still to this day one of the greatest weekends I’ve had at the race track.” Bill has turned Orangeburg Cycle over to his son Armon, a and Armon is still racing and winning in Top Fuel Harley. He won the class at the AMRA National Finals at Rockingham last year. I sure wish more fans had been there to see Armon roaring down the strip into the setting sun. He was racing against another Harley drag racing legend’s daughter, Kirsten Hopkins. “I thought it was cool of course,” said Armon about Bill’s induction. “One of the things I like about Dad is he started his shop in 1981 and said if I’m gonna have a shop in this town I have to have the fastest motorcycle in this town. That eventually turned into racing. He started out racing not knowing anything. Had to learn while he was doing it. He went and bought a lathe and learned machining. We still have that same lathe in the shop.” “One thing I’m so proud of my dad about is he started from no experience in racing and nitro and taught himself. He went from this tiny little lathe and teaching himself how to be a machinist and make parts to the great legacy he made himself in Continued On Page 48

That became the first Southern Rock. I have the fender from Southern Rock 2 hanging in my shop at the house. I have the last bike he built in 1999. I’m bringing that bike back in 2019 completely revamped.” Armon’s Bill Furr story goes way back to that first Summer. “Dad, me, and my brother, Aaron, went to Bowling Green in 1997. We took three bikes, Top Fuel, Pro Fuel, and Pro Dragster,” Armon said. “It was the first year that I started riding. And it was just us three there. There were three motorcycles and three of us so we were scrambling to get things done.” “Second round of qualifying and we had done all the service work to the bikes before we turned them over. We went to turn over Dad’s Top Fuel bike and the motor was locked up. And we had just done all the service, clutches, oil. Dad said don’t worry about it we don’t have time to change the motor. He didn’t give up, just realized we didn’t have time. Only had about 25 minutes left before the next round. I looked at my brother and said I’m fixing to start working on this motorcycle. We started working on it. Dad came out and saw us working on it and jumped in. The three of us got it changed and cranked up.” My dad is my number one hero and, as much as I loved Jim McClure, he was number two to me. We got that motor in and ready. Jim was on the bump spot (lowest qualified bike) for that round. And Dad was not qualified. He wound up qualifying and Jim had to go home.” Armon said. Armon is in his early 40’s and still running a successful bike shop and says he is going racing. Look for him and, maybe Bill, at the drag strip this summer.

Brad Whitfield Remembered Through CCCC Foundation Bradley Keith Whitfield distinguished himself as a student at Central Carolina Community College, graduating from the college’s Motorcycle Mechanics program. Whitfield, 26, passed away unexpectedly on February 20, following a single motor vehicle accident. He was a talented and respected technician in the H-D world. “Brad Whitfield was naturally talented when it came to motorcycles. He was a leader,” said Stan Thompson, CCCC Lead Motorcycle Mechanics Instructor. Wayne Graham, who was one of Brad’s Motorcycle Mechanics teachers at CCCC, said, “I taught Brad in the Motorcycle Mechanics program. Brad was an outstanding student and a great young man. He was quiet, hard working — one of the best students I ever had in over 30 years. He improved to the level of Master Tech while working at Ray Price HarleyDavidson in Raleigh. I am glad I had the opportunity to teach Brad. I will miss him.” On August 20, 2016, he married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Bailey. She was the love of his life. They lived in Sanford with their dogs — Macy, Sadie, and Nacho. He and Bailey adored their dogs and life together. Brad could often be found at the horse barn helping Bailey with her business. He was a loving husband, son, and friend. Brad was a hard worker and had a passion like no other. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, dirt bikes, and 4-wheelers with his buddies. He liked fishing at the coast with his dad and boating with his parents. Brad had an infectious smile and a witty since of humor. Brad is survived by his wife, Bailey Bennett Whitfield of Sanford; parents, Keith and Rhonda Whitfield of Apex; grandparents, Wade and Minerva Whitfield of Pittsboro; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. 24th Annual Burlington H.O.G. And Down Home Harley-Davidson Hospice Bike Show

By: Scott Wicker Slightly warmer temperatures and no ice and snow brought out one of the largest turn outs for the 24th Annual Burlington H.O.G. Chapter Hospice Bike Show in its history. Many participants actually rode their motorcycles to get to the show due to the slightly warmer weather. The show, as usual, was held inside the Holly Hill Mall in Burlington on Saturday, February 24th and Sunday, February 25th. Eighty Five entries represented 36 classes and categories to raise over $23,725 for Hospice of Alamance and Caswell Counties. This year’s total was one of the best in the show’s history. Throughout the shows history, it has raised over $350,000 in contributions. Donations were also raised through sales of 50/50 tickets, with most of the winnings donated back, and the Ladies of Harley Bake Sale. Each bike had a milk jug tied to the front wheel so spectators could make contributions by putting money in the jug of their favorite bike.

As in years past, everyone was allowed to raise contributions prior to the event. Trophies were awarded to those who raised the most in each class and also to those who raised the 2nd and 3rd highest amounts. All the bikes were also judged separately by a panel of judges making it two shows in one. The Softail Class had 15 entries and the Full Dresser Class had 11 entries. The Full Dresser Class had the most donations as a class. The Dyna Class was 2nd and the Softail Class was 3rd is very impressive for this highly competitive class. As in years past, the support was overwhelming. The members of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter would like to thank all of the sponsors, participants, and contributors that made this year’s show such a success for Hospice of Alamance/Caswell Counties. A Special Thanks to all the members of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter, Down Home Harley-Davidson, and the Holly Hill Mall. Congratulations to all of the winners and top finishers. Ft. Bragg HD And Freedom Biker Church Chili Cook Off

By: Wendy Rogers February 24th was another great day for the Annual Chili Cook-off presented by Freedom Biker Church and Ft. Bragg HD. The weather was a little windy, but a good day to try over 20 types and styles of This Church chili! This is out growing event is held the present every year to help raise Church. money for the Church for a new building fund. This Church is out growing the present Church. There were 20 teams competing this year and there were about 360 judges in attendance. Many thanks to all of the volunteers that helped put this event together. Bill Johnson and Jennifer Phillips did the trophies and awards.

The winners were as follows: Ft. Bragg HOG Chapter Won First Place receiving a Trophy, $100 from Freedom Biker Church, and a $100 gift card from Ft. Bragg HD. St. Patty’s Day With Tilley Harley-Davidson By: Grant Due to my DNA test last Christmas I have finally figured my love for all things beer. So, I was more that pleased to see Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury was hosting a St. Patty’s Day Party. The weather seemed to not be on our side, but quickly changed as bikes rolled in around Lots of good lunch. things happen at Fast Freddie Thompson was Tilley jamming on the stage with Irish Harley-Davidson theme music and adult beverages were available inside along with some damn fine hot dogs. all remaining winter wear was 50% off and everything in the store, with the exception of motorcycles, was 17% off! Man, it was packed in there. A friendly bag piper was even on hand playing some tunes as he strolled around the parking lot and store. Kids loved having pictures taken with him with all the Irish garb he had on. Looked real to me, but what do I know. I’m only 37% Irish according to Ancestry DNA. I heard the bell ring, signifying a new bike owner, more than a few times as the day rolled on. Eventually, I decided to hit the dusty trail. Lots of good things happen at Tilley Harley-

Jeff Launches JJs Watering Hole Into Year Two By: Rick Gammons What did you do February 17th? It was cool and wet, very wet, raining continually all day. A lot of folks just stayed inside at home. Peggy and I stayed inside also, at JJs Watering Hole. Dry and comfortable, with plenty of food and friends to help ease the nastiness outside. The bar was full! Apparently, there were others who wanted to stay dry, too... while enjoying other compadres not unlike themselves. Ok, so you got a bit wet between the car and the bar. So what? What was going on inside was well worth catching a few drops on the way in. The food was good, too. The pool table was covered and huge amounts of BBQ and slaw graced the table, along with pasta dishes and other sides. On top of that. buckets of oysters were gulped down (or slid. Depends on your preference). Amongst all of this, there were several fellas there enjoying themselves. They eventually got up, put on guitars and began playing. It was Cannonball! They were the band that played

If you like The Stones, Stevie Ray, Steppenwolf, and other music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, then this is the band you want to hear. I have noticed that the biker population is getting a bit older (myself not included, of course) and Cannonball’s music seems to hit the “sweet spot”. The fun continued long after the time for Peggy and me to leave. They partied on into the morning. More music, more food, and just plain (biker) fun. And it’s just the kind of place to park your ass sometime. Make a point to do so soon. Oh, before I forget, thanks to the ladies behind the bar. They worked their tails off. By: Beth Gorman The second Thursday of every month is a great night to go to The Spring and hang out with fellow bikers and friends. It’s the Revenant Warriors Bike Night. I had a great time, great drinks, great burgers, and met some great people. The Spring is located at 3616 NC Highway 42 in Willow Springs, North Carolina. There was a 50/50 raffle for Ride For Kids Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The winner donated it back to the foundation. The next bike night will be April 12th, so make sure to mark your calendars if you want to go for a nice ride and end up at a great destination. I am sure as this event gets larger there will be more activities added as the bike season continues. I had the opportunity to meet some of the members of the Revenant Warriors Motorcycle Organization and look forward to going to some of their events coming up as well. On April 15th, they are hosting a Tax-Free Chicken Plate Sale, at Big Daddy’s Roadhouse on NC 55 and on April 21st, the Ride For Kids Poker Run, starts at the Spring. While riding my Harley, I swerved to avoid hitting a deer, lost control and landed in a ditch, severely banging my head. Dazed and confused I crawled out of the ditch to the edge of the road when a shiny new convertible pulled up with a very beautiful woman who asked, “Are you okay?” As I looked up, I noticed she was wearing a low-cut blouse with cleavage to die for. “I’m okay I think,” I replied as I pulled myself up to the side of the car to get a closer look. She said, “Get in and I’ll take you home so I can clean and bandage that nasty scrape on your head.” “That’s nice of you,” I answered, but I don’t think my wife will like me doing that! “Oh, come now, I’m a nurse,” she insisted. “I need to see if you have any more scrapes and then treat them properly.” Well, she was really pretty and very persuasive. Being sort of shaken and weak, I agreed, but repeated, “I’m sure my wife won’t like this.” We

After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap. They had a wonderful time. He stays for breakfast. The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy is amazed. Everything had been so incredible! “You know,” he said, “you are the perfect woman, are you this nice to every guy you meet?” “No,” she replies. . . “You just happened to catch my eye.”

A testimony is a story of your life and what you have been brought out of, it’s not a group of church stories, it’s about yourself. A lot of people don’t like to talk about their life before Christ, but I have learned there are people that maybe going through some of the stuff you did and need to hear it. When Tank died, I said OK, I’m through with the ministry and I’m through with going to church (don’t ever tell God you’re not going to do something). God was stronger than I was. HLF was Tank’s ministry, it wasn’t mine. I used to tell people it was a thorn in my butt. Little did I know that the word was in my heart and the Lord had a different way for me. I used to tell everyone that I was just a roadie and pack mule for Tank, I just did the driving and carried his music and tapes. But come to find out I was in training to take over when the Lord called him home.

We are all the time asking Jesus for His help but we don’t want to help Him and do our part. Doing your part is giving your testimony. Your testimony is powerful and it defeats the Devil. Some may remember Tank and some won’t. Tank started writing this article when the magazine started. He was a great man of God and went around singing and preaching. We traveled somewhere every weekend. Went to a lot of rallies setting up tent and tables with Bibles and tracts. He continued to travel and speak until the day before he passed away. He got to do one last rally before he went home to be with Jesus. David helped us that week with our free breakfast at the campground. Tank had one of the best weeks he had in months. After he passed away I got this email from David. This is what it said. I’m especially grateful to God that I could spend the week with you guys at the Myrtle Beach Rally and work beside both of you ministering to the bikers at the campground. You both have truly been a blessing to me and many others, and I’m looking forward to work alongside of you again, because I know the Lord ain’t done with you yet. That was 12 years ago and we’re still at it. I still don’t like to get up in front of people to speak, but I will if the Lord tells me to. Sometimes I can’t tell what God has done for me without crying but people tell me that’s ok

cause you can tell it’s from the Lord. One thing that stands out for me was when we went to the park at Myrtle Beach to feed the homeless, There was a lady that was cussing and blaming God for everything. Some of our guys tried to talk to her but she wasn’t going to listen. I just sat back and watched and prayed and asked God for my time with her. After a little while, I asked her to come with me, because I wanted to talk to her. She cussed me and said no, but finally she did. I told her it was time for her to shut up and listen to me. She was mad at God for taking her mother and grandma from her. I told her I knew what she was going through and told her about Tank’s sickness and what we went through. Finally, she came around and was very thankful for me and what I said to her. All you have to do is ask God to help you and put that right person in your pathway. Matthew 20: 32-33. Therefore, whoever confesses me before men, him I will also confess before my Father who is in Heaven. 33- But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny before my Father who is in Heaven. 2018 Burlington L.O.H. Chili Cook Off

By: Scott Wicker As in years past, an enthusiastic crowd looking to get great chili at Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington came out on Saturday, March 3rd to show support for the Burlington Ladies of Harley Annual Chili Cook Off. Each of the participants served an ample portion of chili to those in attendance that made a donation to benefit the Burlington Ladies of Harley. Also, baked goods were available making this very popular event successful as usual. Several varieties of chili were served, giving a variety of different flavors to this year’s event. All 12 contestants served up some great chili making it difficult to pick which one was the best. When all was said and done and votes were counted, Sandra and William Blanchard and Liz Lunsford were declared the winners and were named the 2018 Burlington L.O.H. Chili Bean “Queens and Kings”. Sandra and William Blanchard Won the Popular Vote Division and Liz Lunsford won the new Judged Division. Sandra, William, and Liz will represent

the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter and the Burlington L.O.H. at the Annual Bike Show and Chili Cook-Off to be held at Raging Bull Harley-Davidson in Durham, NC where several of the state’s H.O.G. Chapters will bring their best entrants to compete for H.O.G. Club bragging rights! Congratulations to Sandra, William, and Liz and thanks also to some of the other participants. are represented at this show so it reflects what a builder’s imagination can come up with. It is very competitive and many builders compete. Hank, owner of Widowmaker CDR, is a full-time builder. For a lot of the attendees it is a part time job. Hank likes competing in this event because it allows him to freely, and with whatever style he chooses, play on a level field. The builders judge each other and from what Hank has seen, these are honest people. They take the time to look at the work that has been put into the bike. Widowmaker CDR was in the freestyle class competing against 8 other high end bikes. There were about 30 bikes competing for the 2 top spots.in 4 classes, Freestyle, Retro Mod, Harley Mod, Custom Street. Hank took the second-place win at the show. He felt it was as rewarding as taking the 1st in his opinion, because the bike that won was a truly better, more unique bike. Surprisingly, the best part of the show is for him networking. Widowmaker CDR is a dealer for Yelvington USA and Suspension Technologies selling suspension parts. Getting to take time with Kirsh 100 % American made helmets were just some of the vendors there that made it Hanks favorite favor. You will be able to purchase those American made helmets from Widow Maker very soon! Widowmaker also was on stage performing some tech to the audience and streaming live to thousands of viewers. Now, the big cherry on this fabulous Sunday - by taking runner up, he has been invited to compete in the Nationals next January in Chicago. Widowmaker will be competing against all the winners from the rest of the series that will be taking place through the course of the next year all over the US. The winner of that can win up to $70,000 in cash and prizes. So, Hank said, “That’s kind of a big deal! Since he is invited, he can show up with a new build or any bike of his choosing. So just remember, one day you might see Hank and say, “Hey, I know that guy! Because he IS a rock star at bike building.

24th Anniversary Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America Former NASCAR driver and NBC Sports racing analyst Kyle Petty is once again revving up his Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America for the 24th year in a row. As one of the most successful and popular charity rides in the country, the ride will travel down the East Coast this spring for the first time since 2011. Starting in Portland, Maine on May 5 and ending in Greensboro, North Carolina on May 11, Petty will lead 225 participants, including a record of more than 25 new riders, through nine states in seven days. Presented for the sixth consecutive year by Manheim®, North America’s leading provider of used vehicle services, the ride will travel 1,200 miles to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction – a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Kenny Vaughan Memorial Ride By: Veronica Cavanaugh & Alan Dockery Recently, the newest member of the Hickory Riding Club lost his battle with cancer. Kenny Vaughan was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Married to Janice Vaughan for 16 years, they enjoyed riding motorcycles together in their free time. Kenny was the newest member of the Hickory Riding Club but spent many weekends with them prior to his joining in January. Kenny never met a stranger. He was always there to lend a helping hand or give the shirt off his back. He loved and was loved by so many. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with Gastrointestinal Stromal Cancer when they found a tumor in his large intestines. He fought the toughest fight that he could but lost his battle on February 26, 2018. His benefit ride turned into a memorial ride to honor this amazing man. Clubs from surrounding counties, friends and family joined to ride on March 10th to raise money to help with expenses for the funeral, and, my, what a beautiful day it was. Rolling Saints RC, Tenth Legion MC, Hickory Riding Club, Bad Company Speed Shop, BACA, and several others came together in mass brotherhood to help this family out. Kenny’s memory will live on in his wife, son, grandkids, family, and friends as he was a bright light to so many. The family would like to thank each and every individual that came out to ride in his memory, he would have been so proud

Don’t hang out at the bar, ride, and other times you love a local, bar-hopping, race-around-town-with-friends day of riding. The Kenny Vaughan Memorial Ride Dice Roll was a club hopping day. A pretty Saturday early in March means bikers want to ride. As I rolled up to John’s Tavern there was already a crowd. This little place down by the river is the oldest beer joint in Hickory. It serves as the Lone Eagles club house since members are usually there. Weren’t nobody in a hurry. About the time of last bike out, we were finally leaving. From John’s, folks dashed across the A pretty river, through Granite Falls and to the Rolling Saints RC club house. Saturday early Good folks. Nice place that I think used to be an old barbeque joint. From there it was a leisurely ride across town to Bad Company’s shop. The day ended at the Hickory Riding Club’s place in the country. They have the coolest old school clubhouse. Like something you see in the 1970’s “B” grade biker movies. Folks hung out for a great potluck supper and cold beverages. My friend Kristen Yost won the dice roll and donated it back to the cause. It’s always fun hanging out with old biker buddies on a Saturday afternoon. Ride in Peace, Kenny.
