What do you say when the rain lets up and the temperature is consistently in the 70s? LET’S RIDE! The next question is “Where”? The answer may not be easy because we are in the midst of an truly unprecedented situation. While we are all dealing with the repercussions of the Covid-19 virus, let’s all remember our local biker friendly businesses, bike shops, restaurants and friends. Check out the advertisers in this issue, who are supporting the motorcycle community and consider shopping on their websites to give them a boost and give you something to look forward to in the mail. Some new riding apparel, garage signs, accessories or maybe the parts to finish the bike project you are working might be the highlight of your day. The bike shops have been deemed essential at this point and are still open, it’s a good time to get some scheduled maintenance done or some other work you have been putting off. Some of the shops are offering pickup and delivery service to make it really easy on you. Check on your local watering holes, see if they are offering any services. If so, make an order to go! You may get to chat with your favorite bartender (from 6 feet away) and provide some much-needed relief for the both of you! If I know anything, it’s that when this is over (hopefully sooner, rather than later) we are gonna have some big ol biker style parties. The bike nights are gonna be packed, watering holes and feed bags are gonna be over run and we are gonna make up for lost time! In the meanwhile, check out this month’s Cruisin’ Calendar starting on Page 6. We kept a close eye on everything and pulled as many events as word came down that they were postponed or cancelled. That being said, there are still a lot of events that were optimistic and remained on the schedule. It would be a good idea to use the contact information provided to check to make sure that all is still happening on time before you head out. Then again, head over there if ya want to, a lot of times the ride is just as good as the destination. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar is the place to look for the most complete listing of motorcycle events in the Carolinas. We post every one that we can find, but we also rely on our readers to send us their upcoming events. So, if you have an event that you want listed, Email Your Event Info or Flyer to: BikerEvents@FTCarolinas.com Your event will be in the Cruisin’ Calendar in the print magazine (20,000 copies monthly), our online magazine and posted to our website FullThrottleMagazine.com We also send out weekly event updates and will give you the most current information available. You can be added to our list by clicking the “find out more” button on the bottom of our home page. Your event will also be included in our Weekend Events Update newsletter that we send out to our subscribers the Wednesday before your event! Event postings are printed monthly till the event date passes. Charity and club events are listed for FREE! We also have very reasonable rates for print ready event flyers. Call 336-8855400 for pricing and availability. Don’t wait because dates will fill up early and you surely want your event to get the best exposure for as long as possible. Check out the cover on this month’s issue and the cover story on page 5. Roosters Barnyard in Dublin, NC is planning on throwing a big ol biker party at the end of May. Roosters Spring Rally will be on May 29-30 and will feature a Motorcycle Rodeo, Sound Off, Bike Show and I’m sure they will be slinging all your favorite beverages. Rooster has built a 24 x 80 two story outdoor entertainment center to host events at and sounds like something you’re not gonna want to miss! Put this event on your calendar NOW, but if you get a chance take a ride to Dublin and check em out before the event! Ride safe and enjoy every aspect of motorcycling throughout the year with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Look for us at events all across the Carolinas this spring and summer. We are looking for you! The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 2020 is published monthly and no reproduction of any content is permitted except by prior express written approval of Mark D. The Cruisin’ Calendar Continues On Page 6

Rooster’s Barnyard was first established in 2015 as Jeffrey’s Bistro, with a motto of serving the “Best to the Best.” In 2017, the local town of Dublin, NC (a dry town) overwhelmingly voted to allow beer and wine sales. This vote ended more than 90 years of prohibition in this southeastern North Carolina town. Shortly thereafter, Rooster’s Barnyard began slowly transitioning our business model to take advantage of the new laws, serving our first beer on July 8th, 2018; a day that will live on in the Dublin history books. In May 2019, we began to expand our dream by building

a 24-foot by 80-foot covered two-story outdoor entertainment facility which boasts more than 120 feet of upper deck seating area and over 200 feet of indoor balcony seating. A privacy fence surrounds the event center which allows us to offer quality entertainment and become the entertainment destination for the region. To complete our transformation, we decided to re-brand ourselves; and “Rooster’s Barnyard” was born! We look forward to seeing you! We are excited to announce our 1st Annual Bike Rally May 29th & 30th 2020. There will be two fun filled days for the biker enthusiast. Our goal is to have all the entertainment you can stand! Join us for our Motorcycle Rodeo; where you can show off your skills in “Our Arena”. Events will include a keg roll, balloon toss, barrel race, and more, and, we will top the afternoon off with the Crowning of Ms. Rooster, in our soon to be famous bikini contest. Friday evening will host a night full of contests for the ladies. Don’t miss the Hot Buns, Weenie Houdini, and T-Shirt Contest. Saturday will host a bike show and sound off, Motorcycle Rodeo, and Live Entertainment with the Tim Elliot Band. No need to worry, there is “Plenty of parking”, bring a lawn chair for the rodeo. And remember, this is a Color Neutral Event. See details on our website: www.roostersbarnyard.com, and Facebook page Roosters Barnyard Sports and Entertainment Bar Dublin, NC

26th Annual Burlington H.O.G. Chapter All Harley Bike Show

By: Scott Wicker lightly warmer temperatures and no ice and snow

brought out one of the best turn outs in history for the 26th Annual Burlington H.O.G. Chapter Alamance/Caswell Hospice Bike Show. The Show, as usual, was held inside the Holly Hill Mall in Burlington on Saturday, February 22nd and Sunday, February 23rd. 66 entries represented 33 classes and categories to raise over $23,105.62 for Hospice of Alamance and Caswell Counties. This year’s total was one of the the best ever in the show’s his-

tory. Many participants actually rode their motorcycles to get to the show due to the slightly warmer weather. Throughout the show’s history, it has raised nearly $400,000.00 in contributions. Donations were also raised through sales of 50/50 tickets, with some of the winnings donated back, and the Ladies of Harley bake sale. Each bike had a milk jug tied to the front wheel so spectators could make contributions by putting money in the jug of their favorite bike. As in years past, everyone was allowed to raise contributions prior to the event. Trophies were awarded to those who raised the most in each class and also to those who raised the 2nd and 3rd highest amounts. All the bikes were also judged separately by a panel of judges making it two shows in one. The Softail Class had 13 entries and the Trike Class had an impressive 11 entries. The CVO Class had the Most Donations as a Class with $11,305.63- very impressive for this highly competitive class. As in years past, the support was overwhelming. History Of CBA/ABATE Of NC Pt. 3 By Claude “Boda” Chavis (bio at finish of article) In Loving Memory Of Claude “Boda” Chavis October 11, 1949- January 19, 2019 Continued from issue #259 & #260 - Feb & March 2020 he CBA also worked with and supported South Carolina in their efforts to repeal the mandatory helmet laws. With a lot of grassroots support, they were able to repeal the mandatory helmet law for anyone over 21 effective June 16th, 1980. After the repeal, South Carolina reported an increase in motorcycle deaths in 1980. Shortly after the state issued the statistics, they had to retract the report because the figures were incorrect. Current Stats • In North Carolina, motorcycle accidents account for 7.1 percent of all traffic fatalities. • In South Carolina, motorcycle accidents account for 7.7 percent of all traffic fatalities. • In North Carolina, there are 11.9 fatalities of every 10,000 registered motorcycles. • In South Carolina, there are 15.9 fatalities of every 10,000 registered motorcycles. Approximately three-fourths of motorcycle accidents involved collisions with another vehicle, which was most often a passenger automobile, according to the Hurt Report.

It would seem that concentration on accident prevention and “Look twice, save a life” campaigns would be of great benefit. It should also be pointed out that South Carolina has a longer “riding season” than North Carolina and that many riders in South Carolina wear helmets voluntarily. By 1983, the CBA had grown to twelve chapters. Over the years, chapters would come and go. Chapters continue to sponsor both chapter and charity events in their communities. Initially only the Charlotte Mother Chapter published a newsletter but over the years; especially since the growth of the Internet, other chapters have published their own newsletters. The Charlotte Chapter has also been responsible for publishing a CBA Calendar. I worked on both the Newsletters and Calendars at times, but Viki (Cope) Prevo, was the editor and the heart of the CBA from 1982 through 1990. She is now retired as Mrs. Victoria Wilson of Ciudad Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico – in case you need a contact in Old Mexico. The CBA attorney William “Piggy” Potter was able to get a bill introduced in the State Legislature to enact a voluntary helmet law for North Carolina in place of the mandatory helmet law in 1983. Unfortunately, the bill died in committee due to lack of legislative support, this was due in part to the inaccurate accident statistics reported by South Carolina. By 1983, the Concerned Bikers Association had grown to

12 chapters. The CBA was growing rapidly and many changes were made in the Constitution to accommodate the growth. Membership dues were raised to 15 dollars for a new member and 12 dollars for renewals. Couples membership dues were to 20 dollars for a new couple and 16 dollars for renewals. Legal and legislative actions continued throughout the early 1980s with the goal of introducing helmet law repeal in North Carolina. Then in 1985, CBA attorney William “Piggy” Potter informed the CBA that we did not have enough support in the legislature to succeed that year. In fact, North Carolina passed a mandatory seatbelt law that reflected the legislature’s siding with the insurance and medical lobbyists. It was decided that the CBA would focus on repeal again in the 1987 legislative session. In May of 1985, CBA held another helmet protest run in Raleigh. To indicate the spirit of the protest, it was advertised as Freedom Run 1985. It was felt by some of the more politically correct members that protest was too strong a word for the message CBA was trying to convey. The CBA began to stress motorcycle awareness and safety more than ever. The Charlotte Chapter bought eight billboards along the highways around Raleigh to promote Motorcycle Awareness month. Radio stations advertised the Freedom Run but only about 1000 people attended. 1986 was a year of great change for the CBA. Chapters and members wanted more involvement on the state level and that required reorganization. The constitution was rewritten under the guidance of Viki (Cope) Prevo. The state was divided into

three districts: Central, Eastern, and Western. Each district elected a District Coordinator. The Coordinators were added as members of the CBA’s Board of Directors. Included in the Board of Directors was an Information Director. State Officer Elections were held with any member of the CBA being eligible for office. Under the new Constitution, committees were formed for Legislative, Public Relations, State Events, Products, and Newsletter. On January 27, 1986, leaders of various motorcycle groups from across America met in Las Vegas to discuss a “coming together” and the overwhelming need for a national voice to protect our lifestyle and right to ride. The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) was born. NCOM is not another association, but rather a bringing together of existing motorcycle groups for the purpose of mutual exchange of information, legislative strategy and the combined strength to fight all that is adverse to the freedom of the road. In 1986, the CBA joined the newly formed NCOM formed by Atty. Richard Lester of California. The coalition was formed to help protect bikers as consumers, help establish rider education programs, build a legislative data bank, train people on legislative strategies, and to help protect the rights of injured bikers. CBA President Rick Nail was appointed Regional Coordinator for Region Six of NCOM. NCOM has expanded to include other countries concerned with biker rights. They host yearly national and regional conventions to share knowledge. NCOM has grown to over 2,000 member organizations repContinued On Page #22

resenting hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists nationwide. The goal and purpose of NCOM is to assist all motorcycle organizations and individual riders with legal, legislative and other motorcycling issues. The Coalition will not dictate to any organization, but will be available to assist NCOM member groups through such FREE services as legislative assistance, nationwide information network, public awareness programs, safety projects, loan program, biker anti-discrimination legal and legislative assistance, etc. In 1987, the CBA hired North Carolina’s top rated lobbyist, John Jordan, to work towards Freedom of Choice rather than mandatory helmet laws. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful in gaining enough legislative support to pass a repeal bill. Some members felt that Jordan did not make a strong enough effort to support the passage of a repeal bill. Gary Aiken as Legislative Director for the CBA committed to work towards introduction of a repeal bill in 1989. Although there were no Freedom Runs in 1986 or 1987, there was a grand CBA State Party in 1987, the first since the CBA reorganized. Chuck Jones, the State Vice-President, with the help of the three District Coordinators, Randy Prevo (Central), Andy McClannahan (Eastern), and Cliff Cyphers (Western) were instrumental is staging the event. This was the first of a series of better and much bigger state events for the CBA. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), incorporated in 1987, as a membership-based national motorcyclists’ rights organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. The MRF monitors and when necessary, sways federal legislation and regulatory action that pertains to street riders. The MRF sponsors annual regional and national educational seminars for motorcyclists’ rights activists, including the Meeting of Minds and publishes a bi-monthly newsletter, The MRF Reports. The CBA has worked closely with the MRF since its incorporation. Freedom Run 1988 was held in Raleigh to kick off the riding season and promote May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. Viki (Cope) Prevo took office as Legislative Director and was able to make substantial progress in Raleigh. One significant accomplishment was the formation of the Statewide Motorcycle Awareness and Rider Training (SMART) Committee. The members of the CBA were concerned about the need for safety training programs and making the public aware of the need to share the road with bikers, to “Look Twice, Save a Life”. These programs lead CBA to promote Motorcycle Rider Education and the Motorcycle Licensing requirements. Current programs offered by community colleges and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation include: Basic Rider safety Course, Three Wheel Basic Rider Safety Course, Experienced Rider Safety Course, and Advanced Rider Safety Course. All NC Motorcycle Safety Education courses are self-supporting. These programs all grew out of efforts made in 1989 by CBA lobbyists, including Viki (Cope) Prevo as Legislative Director, now retired as Mrs. Victoria Wilson of Ciudad Mazatlán, Continued On Page #24

Boda Chavis, Chick and Irene Chicarrian, David Gore, Bruce Harris, and many other CBA members. The CBA lobbied heavily for Freedom of Choice and a Motorcycle Safety Education Program. In the end, the legislature passed the Education Program but, once again, rejected Freedom of Choice.

Bio of Claude “Boda” Chavis

The nickname “BODA” came courtesy of Concerned Bikers Associate (CBA) member, Dale Earnhart. It wasn’t until later that he confessed that Boda stood for Big Old Dumb Ass. The name has stuck for 40 years although only a handful of people knew its meaning. I am a charter life member of the Concerned Bikers Association of North Carolina. I drafted the original constitution of the CBA. As a member of the CBA in the early 1970’s, I began submitting photographs and stories to motorcycle and tattoo magazines to promote awareness of motorcycle rights. This led to a Master Photographer certification and press credentials from Easyriders, Outlaw Biker, and other magazines. Over the decades, I have taken thousands of photographs across the state and the country. I am a retired nuclear quality control inspector and technical trainer with an extensive background in computers, nuclear power and technology. While traveling the country, working in nuclear power plant construction, I was active in motorcycle rights fights in Kansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Washington state, and Washington, D.C. Working with the Undertakers Motorcycle Club of the Tricities of Washington, I started ABATE of Washington in 1981. I organized and sponsored the first Tri-Cities ABATE Spring Bike Show and Swap Meet held in Pasco, WA in April 1982. After returning to North Carolina in 1983, I continued working with magazines such as Dixie Rider, Easyriders, Outlaw Biker, and Tattoo. My photographs and articles have been published regularly in magazines and newspapers over the past 40 years. Cleveland County CBA Spaghetti Dinner By: Wally Wersching n February 21st at 6:00PM, the Cleveland County Concerned Bikers Association (CBA) held their “All You Can Eat” Spaghetti Dinner at the Shelby VFW hall. It consisted of spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, bread, pudding and/or cake dessert, and sweet tea – all for only $8.00. That’s why there were so many people eating when I arrived at about 6:15. I brought a stack of Full Throttle magazines to share, and put them on the table with the other free stuff. Many old friends were there. After I paid the $8.00, I started down the food line. The women behind the table were all smiles as they doled out the food. I received a plastic plate full of spaghetti and meat sauce. The sauce was made by “Snake” from the CCIB, and filled with chunks of meat and tomatoes. It really looked good. On the way to the table, I grabbed a piece of toasted bread to go with it. I looked for a place to sit when a young couple asked me to join them. After I introduced myself, I started to devour the great looking food. I wasn’t disappointed. It was hot and deli-

After I finished the spaghetti, I went for some desert. I had a piece of pound cake, and a little scoop of banana pudding. There was a lot to choose from, and everything looked delicious I walked around to visit with some friends who came in while I was eating. There were members of many clubs and biker ministries including the new president of the Crimson Crusaders, Robbie Cooke. He explained that Ty Eckard (the previous president) had to step down, so Robbie and his wife were there to take over. He made sure that I knew about their Biker Sunday event on April 5th at the Landmark Baptist Church. I already had the date marked on my calendar. It’s always been a great event. Next I met the new president of the Cleveland County CBA, Matt (aka “Red”). We talked for a while. I mentioned the box of goodies I donated to the chapter last year – DVD’s, and books about biker safety. He said that he had the box but didn’t have time to look at the contents yet – but said he would. I always like to attend this kind of event. The money raised will help with the chapter’s charitable endeavors along with protecting our rights as motorcyclists. They are a dedicated group of bikers.

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson 9th Annual Chili Cook-Off By: Lincoln Infield

here’s not a lot of things

that I like about winter other than cold weather food, and at the top of that list is chili! I have never met a chili that I didn’t like and I always try to find some chili cook offs to attend. On February 22nd Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in WinstonSalem, NC held their 9th Annual Chili Cook-Off. It ended up being a perfectly mild day and made for good riding. I made a few familiar loops through the county, ending up at dealership hungry! The parking lot was about half full of other folks that had the same idea that I did. There were seven chili chiefs set up in front of the dealership and for a $5 donation to the Shriners Hospitals For Children you could taste ‘em all and you got 3 tickets to vote on your favorite chili chiefs! I took my time going down the line of chefs, you can’t rush when tasting chili. I liked all chilis, but the ones I like the best are the ones that filled the bowl all the way. Ya gotta get a good taste, ya know. Most of the chefs brought some fixin’s with them, but I forgo the cheese and sour creams to make sure to get a clean taste of the chili. I tell ya, they were all delicious! It was also good to see a lot of familiar faces. The Forgotten Sons MC was set up and I saw folks from the CBA, Benevolent Brotherhood RC, Chrome Angels RC, McGrath Motorcycle Law Group and Bike Trash Nation. I’d say judging was definitely the hardest part of the day

Chili Contest Winners & Judges and I was glad to have 3 tickets to vote with! The winners went a little something like this: 1st Place along with $100 and a plaque went to Team Beach Bums, Team Forgotten Sons took home $50 for 2nd place, and Team Craig Bodford came in 3rd place and received $25. Team Forgotten Sons was also awarded the People’s Choice award. Brandon Carpenter took home some cash from the 50/50 drawing. On the day $1,358 was raised for the Shriner Children’s Hospitals. I left full of chili and had a great ride home; the day was a complete success!

Gaston County Toy Run For Kids Breakfast Fundraiser By: Wally Wersching was looking for someplace to go on

Saturday. I wasn’t going to let the Coronavirus “pandemic” stop me from going to biker benefit events. I found this notification on a few Facebook pages. I went to this event last fall, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was fun for a good cause, so I decided to go again this year. On Saturday March 14th, the “Gaston County Toy Run for Kids” held a breakfast fundraiser to raise money to either buy toys or to give to the needy children of Gaston County. The toy run is one of the biggest in the area every December. I left home about 8:00am heading east on Rte. 74. I merged onto I-85, and exited onto New Hope Road, turned right, and then left onto Franklin. A very short distance down the road on the right was Gastonia Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram. I rode around the parking lot getting closer to the main building until I saw other bikes parked. I parked “Miss Vickie” alongside an Indian Scout, then I walked toward the smell of cooking bacon, eggs, hash browns, and sausage There weren’t many bikes, but the place was crowded.

Many people drove their cars and trucks to the breakfast. I took a stack of the “Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines” out of my pack and went to place them on the table. There were already some “Full Throttle” magazines on the table, so I added mine to the stack. Then I walked inside the showroom to pay the $6.00 for breakfast and followed the line to get the food. There were many young ladies handing out the eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and grits. I had a full plate by the time I stopped for a glass of orange juice at the end of the line. The next thing I had to do was find a place to sit. The tables were almost completely full. I walked around and found a place across from a man filling out twenty-five raffle tickets for the 2005 Sportster. We talked as I ate, and he wrote. He was trying to win the bike for his son. Then, “Cuzz” and his wife sat down across from me. We talked for a while as we all ate. I learned that he didn’t ride to the event because he rode the night before, and his allergies were really bothering him. I suggested that he take a spoonful of local honey every morning. I take one every morning, and it really helps me. I walked around taking pictures until I bumped into “Panhead Red” – president of the Carolina Thunder. We talked for a while about a lot of things especially the 2005 Sportster 1200 Custom that they were raffling off. It looked a lot like the one they raffled off last year. He told me that it was the same bike. Last year’s raffle winner didn’t really want the bike, so he sold it back to the club for half the value. Now they can raffle it off again and collect more money for the needy children. They are going to draw the winning ticket at the Toy Run on December 5, 2020. I walked around outside to watch the cooks. The flyer said that the cooking would be done by “World Famous Katdaddy” and the Carolina Thunder. As I watched, they were all doing

their best to prepare the food and keep the line inside fully stocked. As I walked around again, I noticed that there were more bikers rolling in. They were all there for one reason besides getting a delicious breakfast – to raise money for the toy run so that the children of Gaston County will have a pleasant Christmas. I will watch for the fall fundraiser. The food is good, and so are all the people – a win-win situation.

Let’s Roll MC Annual Party By: Mike Humbles et’s roll! Thank you, Raging Bull Harley-Davidson, for hosting the Let’s Roll MC Annual Party on March 7th. The Let’s Roll MC is an organization that stands for charity, unity, community involvement, and motorcycle awareness. They enjoy giving back to the community. This annual party was a great example of that. While the DJ was playing music, others were serving BBQ pork, turkey, chicken, pork & beans, slaw, and many different types of cakes to the hundreds of attendees. And, if after eating all that food you needed to up-size your shirt, Bull City Clothing was there to help. This event was an example of what being a part of the motorcycle family is about. It’s about people with similar interests coming together to share different experiences, riding destinations, and of course to show off some new add-ons to the bikes! The team at Raging Bull Harley-Davidson in Durham, NC opens up their dealership on most weekends for the community to enjoy events like this. They work hard behind the scenes to make sure you have the best experience possible each time you walk into their showroom. My personal thanks

Randolph County CBA Chili Cookoff By: Lincoln Infield

o lie, it was a chilly day

February 29th, but it’s chili season (see what I did there?) and I was headed out to the Original Cox’s Harley-Davidson in Asheboro for the Randolph County CBA Chili Cookoff. The sun was shining, and Cox’s is only a short 50-mile ride down the backroads from my house, so I grabbed my leathers and hit the road. It was a beautiful ride and only the lure of chili tasting steered me into the parking lot! There were a handful of bikes outside the Original Cox’s Harley-Davidson, but the show room was bustling. The newly added used bike wing of the dealership was the site of the chili tasting, and it was thick with the smell of chili and all kinds of bikers making their way to the tasting tables! Randolph County CBA Secretary, Gena Parker, was running the registration table right inside the door. A fivedollar donation to the Randolph County CBA got you a wrist band and the essential bowl and spoon that made you an When It Comes To Your Bike, Insurance Coverage Is Personal. official chili judge. There were 10 fantastic chilies waiting for tasters all with unique recipes that the chefs hoped would win them top honors! Ten ladles of chili ends up being a pretty good-sized lunch, not to mention most chefs brought along fixins and cornbread. It took a while to make it all the way down the to the 10th chili chef, but I was determined. I filled out my voting card and dropped it in the ballot box and headed for the showroom to check out some of the sweet Harley-Davidson Motorcycles that Cox’s has in stock. I wondered around and ran into a bunch of folks I knew, and we kicked some tires and chewed the fat till it was time for the chili contest winners to be announced. As a warmup for the chili winner’s announcement, Shannon Rights with the Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group gathered entries all day and gave away 2 tickets to the AMA Flat

Track Race, to the lucky winner, David Peterson of Asheboro, NC. The 50/50 ticket was drawn and Angel Malines (who also cooked a mean chili) took home $55. Then everyone gathered around as Gena took the spotlight to announce the Chili Cookoff winners. Shannon Rights won 3rd place and $50 that she announced she was donating to the state CBA fund for legislative efforts. Scott Bowman was awarded a $100 Cox’s Harley-Davidson Gift card for his 2nd place chili. The First Place award and all the bragging rights plus $150 cash went to Lavon & Bobby Shoaf, a father and son cooking team. Afterwards, Gena Parker, the Randolph County CBA/ ABATE Secretary, who ran the event said, “We want to thank all the chili cookers that made chili and everyone that came out for tasting and voting to support the Randolph County CBA. Thank you to Cox’s Harley-Davidson of Asheboro for providing their facilities to have it at. It was a fun filled day.” I threw my leg over my bike and headed for some country roads that lead home. It was, in fact, a great day.

Hot Dog Lunch Benefit For Wyatt Greene By: Wally Wersching

Saturday February 22nd. I searched many websites and Facebook pages. On the Crimson Crusaders’ Facebook page, I found that there was going to be a benefit lunch for Wyatt Greene. He is a baby with an unusual condition where he had no soft spot on his head, so his brain had no room to grow. He will have to undergo surgery on his skull to allow his brain to grow normally. It sounded like a very worthy cause, so I planned to attend. It was held at the True Gospel Holiness Church on Shelby Road in Kings Mountain, NC. The lunch started at 11:00am and consisted of a hot dog plate with all the fixin’s for only $5.00. There was also a silent auction, and other items for sale to raise money for Wyatt’s family. When I left home at 10:30, it was chilly with temps in the low 40’s, but the sun was shining in a bright blue Carolina sky. I wore my insulated bibs to make the ride comfortable – and it was. I knew approximately where the church was located from the on-line map, so I exited Rte. 74 onto Business 74, and continued toward Kings Mountain. I looked where I thought the church should be but didn’t see it. I rode all through town. I missed it. So, I turned around, and on the way back, I rode slowly looking for the church thinking that I’d have to miss the lunch because I couldn’t find the church. Then, I finally saw it. There was a small sign for the hot dog lunch by the road. I turned around again and rode up the driveway to the church parking lot which was located behind a house. The church was not visible from the road. The lot was full of cars, but only one other motorcycle. I was expecting more bikes. After I parked “Miss Vickie”, I talked with a few of the men standing and talking in the lot. I was looking for something to do on

gave them each a copy of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazine. Then they directed me to a building in the back where the lunch was being served. “Whit” was cooking the hot dogs on a Webber grill. They looked good (a little burnt) – just the way I would cook them. We talked for a short while before I went inside. There was a very pleasant young lady taking the $5.00 for the hot dogs. I gave her a $5 bill but told her I wasn’t going to eat the hot dog because I was taking my wife out to lunch when I got home. She thanked me for my donation. That’s when I learned about the club who was hosting the event. The Southern Christian Cruisers is a small group of devoted bikers who have been organized for a couple years. I hadn’t heard about them before, but I will keep their Facebook page on my list of places to look for future events. I started walking around taking pictures of the people. I saw Wyatt and his dad, Brad. We talked for a while about Wyatt’s condition. I could hear the concern in Brad’s voice - not know-

ing if the surgery would help his son. It’s always scary when they are so little, and there’s something wrong. Around the walls of the room were many items for the auction – from a bicycle to dinner gift certificates at local restaurants, and everything in between. If I would have driven my car, I might have bid on some of the things. They were all great. All I had to do was put my name on a sheet of paper with my bid and wait until 1:00pm to find out if I won. More and more people were coming in as I walked around. It was a really big turnout. Apparently, they had a lot of friends in the community. $3,382.00 was given to Brad at the end of the event. That’s quite a lot of money for a small club to raise in a couple hours.

BDL Open Belt Primary Install And Review

By: Hank Thibodeau

owadays, coming up with a product install that

will set our bikes apart from others in the crowd can be a challenge to say the least. Everyone has a bagger, everyone has apes, everyone is powder coating their bikes black and majority of the bikes are black. My own bike falls under all of those descriptions. I wanted something that would continue the bike down the road of an aggressive, performance inspired bike. In the forever search of better performance, I looked back at all the choppers that I have done and decided the best route to go was a BDL open belt primary. This unit feeds all of my needs: ag-

gressive look, better performance and that race bike dry clutch rattle with the added bonus of the “Super Charger Whine”. That is probably my favorite part. I know, everyone knows someone that has had their pant leg get caught in it or are concerned of such things. I can tell you without a doubt, unless you stick any part of yourself purposely into it, you will be just fine. Now that the safety talk is covered, on to the tech part. Increased performance? Yes, by installing the BDL belt drive system you will reduce rotating mass by almost half! Just for beginners, a clutch system that will handle that big bore horsepower and torque with ease. Next you eliminate the lag you get from your compensator sprocket assembly. It becomes a direct drive instead of a semi slip type device. For some, this may not be the best option. With the removal of the compensator, you remove some of the low speed drivability of the bike, as it becomes a direct drive. This is a performance driven product. However, not a deal breaker just an adjustment in your driving style. Next as an added bonus, there is no more primary fluid to change. And over a (REALLY, REALLY) extended period of time it will pay for itself in the cost of oil that you are no longer using. At least that is a good selling point to help you make that purchase. Which brings me to a final point with this product, cost. As it is priced at a fair market cost, it is a lot for a single product upgrade. However, it gives back an equal value in product quality, appearance and overall gains. Now that we have got that out of the way, let’s look at the install. The install is an involved process. This may not be a job for the average at home mechanic. It requires a few specialty tools, such as a clutch locking tool to be able to correctly torque the clutch hub nut. A torque wrench and a T70 torx bit socket to remove stock compensator. The rest of the tools needed are basic shop tools. The kit comes complete with everything you will need to perform the install. The kit I am installing is the EV2PH B17. This unit comes in gloss black and features a 1 piece motor/ trans plate. I chose this unit to give me as much structural integrity as I could get. I did some custom powder coating to my unit to give it more of a custom look to match my bike. Normally, it comes with all parts done in black. They also of-

www.

fer the system in chrome. Prior to install (approximately 24hrs) you will want to soak your new friction clutch plates in a quality ATF fluid and let drip dry. This will add life to the clutches. Do not forget the drying process, the more they drip dry the less mess you will have on your initial ride. Install starts with the removal of your complete stock primary assembly. I would suggest that you refer to your HD shop manual for proper procedure of disassembly. You will also need go to BDL’s website to obtain a copy of the belt drive assembly instructions. Once your stock assembly is removed, you will want to take the time to remove as much residual oil from your stator and stator rotor assembly. This will save you a mess after first few rides. Once cleaned, start by fitting the backing plate to the engine/trans assembly. When you are happy with the fit, install the motor plate mounting bolts. Be sure to apply thread locker to all the bolts and torque to value outlined in instructions. Temporarily install the front engine sprocket and clutch basket to check pulley alignment. This is critical to overall performance and belt life. The kit comes with a variety of shims to offset the front pulley if needed. For this install, we did not need to use any shims. Remove pulleys and apply a heavy duty type thread locker to the spline surface of the front pulley and clutch hub assembly. This is extremely important. If this is skipped it can compromise the life of the pulleys. Fit the front pulley, belt and clutch basket assembly to the bike. This can be a little difficult as belt will need to be slightly stretched, and you will need to take your time to be sure clutch splines to main shaft of transmission install without binding or damaging the splines on the clutch basket. Once pulleys are fully seated in place, install retaining nuts and washers onto engine sprocket shaft and transmission main shaft. Be sure to use heavy duty thread locker. Torque nuts as outlined in install instructions using your clutch hub locking tools. At this point, I like to remove spark plugs and rotate engine by hand a few times to verify belt tracking before I finish assembly.

Now, you are ready to assemble your clutches. Wipe any excess oil from clutches. Refer to your instructions as the clutches have a specific stack order. Install the new clutch push rod at this time. With great caution it is time to install locker pressure plate assembly. This assembly uses a ball and ramp assembly to achieve the locking function of the clutch. I believe there are 40 balls in the ball and ramp assembly. So, take your time. Once pressure plate assembly is in place, using thread locker, install 6 shoulder bolts. Torque bolts as outlined in instructions. You will notice that your kit came with 2 different length shifter shaft supports. Long and the short, use the long one for a single toe shifter and the short one for the traditional heal toe shifter assembly. You will need to press the brass bushings into shifter shaft support that you are using. At this point, the hard stuff is done. Install the starter, install the pulley trim bolts. Install the clutch hub dust shield on the clutch basket and install your belt guards. Start the bike and check for proper clutch function. Once you have verified clutch is functioning as it should, you are ready to go for a ride. Make your first ride short. Come back, check everything over for a final time. Clean off the oil mist that will come from the clutch plates. Go out and enjoy. My final overall thoughts on this product, it is a 10 on a 1-10 scale. It is a GREAT product. As ease of install for the average at home mechanic, I would place it at a 7 on a scale of 1-10 for difficulty. This is not a quick job. This job will take approximately 4-5 hrs. when all the steps are followed properly. If you are interested in having this job done or any job done to your bike, come and see us at Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair, 5582 Mt Harmony Church Rd., Rougemont NC. Xtreme Wings -N- Things 3rd Anniversary Party By: Lincoln Infield

Wings -N-Things is a cross between a neighborhood bar, a concert hall, and billiards room. It has that down-home feeling as if you never meet a stranger when bellied up to the bar, and yet they carry big name regional bands and recording artists. Xtreme also features a handful of tables and hosts a pool league. As the name suggests they also serve up some killer wings along with burgers, fries, and other sports bar delicacies. Owner Chad Torok and his other half Brandee Amos have been keeping the spirits and grub rolling for the past 3 years and on March 13th threw a party to celebrate their 3rd Anniversary. On the bill for the evening from 4-8pm was a up and coming guitar picker Jordan Pickett and although I showed up far after that, people in the crowd were still talking about how good he is. It’s not his first time playing at Xtreme treme

and I suppose we will see him again in the near future. The headlining act was rising country star Tim Elliot. Tim brings a full band and the talent to put on a helluva show. Tim has played at Xtreme before so the anticipation of the crowd was high. Everyone knew they were in for a rockin night. I got there in between sets, so it was perfect to get in and see some friends before the music began again. Xtreme has full ABC permits and can quench your thirst no matter the order. The specials this night included $3 Coronas and $5 Cherry Bombs. It was also local legend Chris Wrenn’s birthday party. The crowd obliged and sang “Happy Birthday” in hopes that they would get a slice of the birthday cake. Hope you had a great night Chris!

Xtreme, Chad and Brandee do a bang-up job making sure that the live acts are on stage every weekend and that the drinks are always cold! Xtreme also hosts a bike night every Thursday night with live music and drink specials. As the weather gets warmer you may even see some live music outside in the parking lot! So, if you are looking for a great place to hang out, head over to Xtreme Wings -n- Things at 3441 Myer Lee Dr. in Winston Salem, NC. As an added bonus, they are conveniently located above Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. Check out their ad and the Cruisin’ Calendar for their next party or stop by any day of the week and have a cold one.

This was the first time I had heard Tim and his band play, and I was thoroughly impressed. They had the stage lights swirling and the smoke machine running wide open. Tim and his band ran through songs by Merle Haggard, Chris Stapleton, Steve Earle, and Charlie Daniels. He nailed them all. It was a lot of fun to watch the folks get down on the dance floor and even slow dance to the slower songs. What a show! It was a great night to be out at Xtreme Wings -N- Things. Corona Virus. I went to the grocery store the other day and couldn’t believe the empty shelves. There was no Clorox, masks, or sanitizer and hardly any cleaning supplies. Everyone is saying clean and wash your hands. That’s nothing new. You should have been doing that all along. Have you ever heard and listened to the words of the song “Jesus Loves Me”? It goes “Jesus loves me, this I know for the Bible tells me so, little ones to Him belong, they are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me for the Bible tells me so”. Jesus loved you even before you were born. You can’t do anything to make Jesus not love you. Romans 8:31- “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Psalm 118:6 –“ Psalm 118:6 The Lord is own my side; I will not fear.” Psalm 91: 1-16. (1) “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.(2) I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”(3) Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter and from the deadly pestilence.(4) He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall find protection; His faithfulness shall be your shield and wall.

(5)You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; (6) Nor of the pestilence that pursues in darkness, nor of the destruction that strikes at noonday. (7) A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.(8) Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the rewards of the wicked. (9) Because you have made the LORD, your refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling,(10) No evil shall befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling (11) for He shall give His angels charge over you to guard you in all your ways. (12) They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone. (13) You shall tread upon the lion and adder; the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. (14) Because he has set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver Him; I will set Him on high because He has known my name. (15) He shall call upon me and I will answer Him. I will be with Him in trouble; I will deliver Him and honor Him. (16) With long life I will satisfy Him, And show Him my salvation.” Now, after reading this, what are you afraid of? The news people and everyone running out to see how many boxes of masks and other supplies they can buy up, are making this Corona Virus bigger than it needs to be. Put your trust in Jesus and stand by His Word. In His Wind, Ms. Pat

Motorcycle continues to move forward with their impressive lineup of motorcycles. They re-established their Chief and Scout classics and now are stretching out with new models. Last year we saw (and demoed) the FTR1200 and new for the 2020 riding season Indian debuted the all new PowerPlus engine and slapped it in the 2020 Indian Challenger, a new offering in the bagger class. The Challenger is a tightly packaged bike, it’s fixed fairing runs full LED lighting and transitions to the well-designed tank curves featuring the Indian trademarked headdress logo and right into an ultra-comfortable “long haul seat”. The Fairing features all the bells and whistles that you can think of. The large display has everything from your tunes, GPS, all the diagnostics you can think of, and different ride modes. The Ride modes are Rain, Standard and Sport. The different modes customize the bike’s throttle mapping and traction control to improve your riding in any condition. Indian retained some classic styling with analog speedo and tach mounted above the display screen for easy viewing. The storage on the Challenger offers over 18 gallons of space with its lockable hardbags. The PowerPlus engine is a throwback name to one of Indian’s original motorcycles from 1916-1924. The PowerPlus is a liquid ndian

water-cooled V-Twin 108cu in engine and boasts an impressive 122 hp (at 5500rpm) and 128 ft-lbs. of torque. These specs made it a no brainer when Monty Hendrix at Indian Motorcycles of Greensboro offered me a demo ride. I arrived at the downtown Greensboro, NC Indian dealership early to make sure I had time to go over all the features. Indian Motorcycle Greensboro has a cool gasoline alley feel to it and the showroom is packed with all the Indian offerings and Polaris Slingshot models, as well as apparel and service departments. Morgan went over all the sweet details on the Challenger with me. Indian really packed a lot of technology into this bike and it took a while to go over the info center! One thing I thought was cool was the “key fob” for the Indian Challenger. It has lock and unlock buttons on it for the saddlebags, so you don’t have to fumble with keys to unlock your bags. With the fob in your pocket (or with the bike) there is a power button for the bike that then allows you to press the starter button on the bike. Indian has made the start button a one touch item. No need to hold down the starter button, just tap it and the engine comes to life. The Challenger curb weight is over 800lbs but was no problem getting it off the kickstand and felt naturally weightless while in operation.

Being in downtown Greensboro, I started my test ride out on bumpy downtown stop and go streets. The Challenger glided over manhole covers, railroad tracks and every other road surface imperfection I could find. The Indian Challenger even has some technology built in to help steady the speed and balance of the bike through corners. Truthfully, this feature worried me when I heard about it, but I didn’t feel any adverse effects from it on the demo ride. Decelerating when approaching stop lights and slow-moving traffic was smooth and the bike felt well balanced. For photos, I found a parking deck and jammed up seven or eight levels to the top of the deck. Again, the Challenger made this an easy task smoothly shifting up and down the gears and making slow 180 degree turns, and the Brembo brakes were solid but smooth in response. I snapped some pictures of the beautiful Ruby Metallic paint job which shone brightly in the sun light with the chrome Headdress and tank badges making sure everyone knew that it was an Indian Motorcycle, even with the less than full Indian front fender skirts that are distinctly Indian on several other models. It was an easy, clean motorcycle to look at and take pictures of. Back on the road, it was time to hit the highway and get a feel for some of the different riding modes. Merging into traffic was no problem with the 122 horsepower at a mere twist of the wrist. Honestly, I was up to speed and a little beyond and I hadn’t made it out of 4th gear yet. The Indian Challenger has a 6-speed transmission with “true overdrive”. I think what they meant was that if you were in south Texas on a highway with

47

no speed limit, you may need a 6th gear. On my ride, the Challenger responded without hesitation in 5th gear running from 70 to beyond 80mph in the Standard Riding Mode, without using the Sport Mode. At highway speeds, the Challenger was as comfortable as you would want it to be. The “long haul seat” was plush but supportive and was comfortable for the miles I logged. The Challenger fairing has a built in windshield with 3 inches of travel that is adjustable with an easy to reach thumb switch. I ran that windshield up and down at different speeds and made it where there was no rough wind on me at any time. All the while the windshield was never above my line of sight. As I cruised back towards Indian Motorcycles of Greensboro, I was reluctant to return the bike, thinking they may not notice for a couple more hours. It was a great bike to ride on a beautiful North Carolina day. I want to thank Monty and his crew at the Indian Motorcycle Greensboro dealership. They have a great setup there and can take care of all your Indian and Polaris purchases and service all makes and models. If you are looking for an awesome American made touring bike that will make you stand out from the rest, do yourself a favor, stop in and check out the Indian Challenger. Indian Motorcycle Greensboro is located at 201 S. Church St. Greensboro, NC or on the web at IndianMotorcycleGreensboro.com. Make sure to tell ‘em The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine sent ya!

Story By: Angelia Estes Photos By: Jerry Quigley aturday, March 14, was such a nice day for a local ride in Hickory, NC, and lots of folks turned out for the Little BIG Ben Benefit Poker Run. Organizers, Angelia Estes and Pam Sigmon, with the help of Amylynne Quigley, pulled out all the stops and had a flag waving bash for Ben Vance. Ben is a four year old little boy who loves flags. A Six-Time Drag Racing Champion Spills The Secret To Going Fast On Two Wheels

By: Bradley Brownell Jalopnik contributor with a love for everything sketchy and eclectic. Filed 11.20.19 to Harley-Davidson Photo: Photos By Harley-Davidson ance & Hines Harley-Davidson FXDR rider Andrew Hines had a truly bizarre NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season this year [2019], which wrapped up last weekend in California with his sixth championship. Having won seven races from the first 10 Pro Stock race outings this season, he went into the series’ playoff segment, dubbed the “Countdown to the Championship” as the easy favorite. Then the stumbles started to pile up. Hines only managed to win one additional trophy from the six countdown race events between September and midNovember. Then, the unthinkable. Hines red-lighted his first round matchup of the finale round in Southern California last weekend against rookie Jianna Salinas. Salinas went on to take her first championship win after defeating the other title contenders, Matt Smith and Jerry Savoie, as they both suffered mechanical issues. In the end, it was Salinas’ good fortune that paved the way for another Hines title. If either Smith or Savoie had won the Auto Club season-ender, they’d have clinched the title. Considering he went winless in 2018, this was an incredible return to form for the H-D champion. That anyone is willing to sit on top of a 390-horsepower 160 cubic-inch V-twin as it rockets down the quarter mile in seven-ish seconds a razors edge from 200 miles per hour has always seemed preposterous to me. At least in a funny car you’ve got a cage around you. What possesses a rider to keep coming back? Surely there is more to a fast run than just pointing and squeezing the throttle. So I got on the phone with one of the most successful drag race riders of all time to get a few

answers. Credit to Mr. Hines for giving me about 45 minutes of his time in a very busy schedule. He provided incredibly comprehensive responses to my occasionally overly-simplistic questions. I was perfectly happy to sit back and soak up the wealth of information that flowed through my iTelephone’s receiver. I asked even more questions than are recorded here, but the ones pertinent to the conversation are presented below. I enjoyed the conversation thoroughly, and I hope you do, too. Bradley Brownell: A proper run is over in a shade under seven seconds. What are a few of the things that can contribute to a good run, or what do you have to do to avoid a bad run? Andrew Hines: It’s really about traction management. How quick can you get to 60 foot. That kind of makes or breaks the run. We’re all running relatively the same speed at the finish line, within a mile an hour or so. You’re not making up much ground from 660 feet to 1320. It’s all about how good you can get that first 1/8th mile down. Basically with the wheelie bar we’re trying to control how much the tire spins up in the first five feet. So if you run a lower wheelie bar, the tire will spin up a little bit faster, and a higher bar will spin up the tire a little slower. On a hotter track you want to spin a little slower so you don’t have too much wheel speed at about 10 feet. Ideally if I could hit a button at about 30 feet out and they’d pop off the back and I wouldn’t have to carry them down the race track, I would. They’re there just a very small tuning element for the first few feet, but they’re make-or-break. That’s what allows us to 60-foot so hard. It just plants that 10-inchwide tire. It’s traction management. BB: That’s just in the first 60 feet?! There’s a lot to think about in getting one of these bikes properly set up for a run.

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

How about that big rear slick? Surely that can’t be very easy to manage. AH: It’s definitely not very forgiving on trying to maneuver it down the race track. You know, it wants to stay real flat with the race track, so you can’t road race it like you would on a street bike. It’s kind of a point and shoot deal. We actually have a guy on the starting line who will line us up. He’ll stand anywhere from 60 to 70 feet behind us, and he kind of points us down the track like a dart. For the first, say 100-150 feet, you’re just kind of along for the ride. You can start correcting it, but it takes a long time for the bike to respond in that early part of the racetrack. Because it’s pulling about 3.2 Gs for the first second and a half. It’s up on the wheelie bar, and it’s really hard to maneuver. At that point it’s all body positioning and weight bias left-to-right. It doesn’t make quick turns, it makes long arcs. BB: You’ve got a 5-speed gearbox in your bike, so you’re shifting from first through fifth in that seven-second window, too. How does that work? AH: On the starting line I hold the throttle wide open at about 6,000 RPM. It has a low-launch rev-limiter. So the clutch is in, throttle wide open. Throw the clutch away. Then a shift light comes on at a predetermined RPM in each gear. You’ll have the faster acceleration rate in the early gears, so you have to lead that a little bit more, because by the time you see the light, react to it, and the bike shifts, it takes a little more RPM.

53

The first shift is right about one second into the run. Pop the clutch and you’re shifting into 2nd gear one second later. You’re already past the 60 foot clock by that time. You’re in second gear for about seven tenths of a second, third gear for about 0.85 seconds, fourth gear about one second. We run a five-speed gearbox, so I’m in high gear for about 4.2 seconds revving out to the finish line. I shift into fifth at about 162 miles per hour or so. It’s trying to do everything it can to kick you off the back, so you’re tryin’ to stay attached to the motorcycle. The transmission is probably the most beat up piece of the equation. It takes a lot of abuse shifting through those five gears with no power interruption. It’s wide open throttle and you’re shifting from one gear to the next with very minimal clutch slip. Each transmission is completely thrown away after about 40 runs. The clutch is serviced between each run. BB: I’m intrigued by the aerodynamics of your race bike. How can any aero engineer possibly correct for any kind of aerodynamic turbulence a stray elbow or knee can cause at nearly-200 mph? AH: Down track with all the wind pressure on your helmet, the important thing is neck strength. It’s not bad if you’re doing two or three rounds a day. But you can go four rounds on Sunday and come Monday my neck muscles can get pretty sore just battling that wind. You know, it’s only seven seconds Continued On Page #54

54

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Six-Time Drag Racing Champion Continued From Page #53 at a time, but it’s enough to get you sore, and you could injure yourself pretty good. My helmet does have few aerodynamic wickers on it to shed the air off a little cleaner so you don’t get as much buffeting. My leathers are custom made to fit real tight to me. They’re made to fit us in a tucked position. And then we also have a two-step seat. We have a low seat that we launch in to keep the weight bias farther forward so it doesn’t want to wheelie as much, and have less dependency on the wheelie bars. In the middle of second gear or early third gear you move to the second seat which is further back. It allows us to get our back parallel, tuck our knees a little tighter to the bike. We try to ‘crawl underneath the paint’ as we say in the Pro-Stock class. BB: Speaking of aero, you’ve got a huge intake scoop on the side of the bike. How do you balance the power-adder effect versus the aerodynamic drag it causes? AH: Obviously the bike’s intake scoops are pushing a lot more wind, but we’re also increasing the intake pressure by 3/4 of a PSI positive intake pressure at 200 mph. To actually have positive pressure on the airbox through the last part of the run is big for making power. They’re a little bit of a tuning element, too. They can act like a long intake runner with a resonant frequency to add a little bit to the engine output that way, too. BB: I’ve read that you haven’t quite hit the 200 mark yet. What are some factors that could get you over that number, or what has prevented you from hitting it thus far? AH: I’ve been 199.94 MPH. My teammate has been as high as 200.45, I think he’s been over 200 seven or eight times now. I haven’t quite got that last little bit for my side of the team. It’s usually just tune-up related. Or depends upon how straight it’s going in high gear. Obviously the quickest way is a straight line, and if you’re moving over a couple feet over that last 1/8th mile, that could be the difference. The truly fast runs that maybe don’t look that great from the grandstands are the ones that will put up the big times. It goes nice and straight from the starting line to the finish line, and the rider has to do very little. But when we’re hangin’ off the side of it, fighting it all the way down the race track, those are the ones that look cool, but they don’t go the quickest. BB: So that’s the mechanics of getting down to the end of the track in quick time, but how does anyone prepare emotionally for such a challenge? It’s a violent few seconds, and you end up practically half a county away from where you started. What exactly goes through a person’s head in all of that? AH: I try not to have too much emotion going up there on the starting line. I try to keep a level head so I can race as best I can. There’s a big difference between a good racer and a good rider. You gotta be a good rider after you let go of the clutch, but you have to be a good racer as you’re rolling up to the staging lanes and getting ready for that run.

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

It’s the adrenaline rush that keeps me coming back. After you make the pass, you don’t really feel it, it’s such a delayed response. After I roll through the shutdown area and I sit there for 10 seconds or so, then I take my helmet off and kind of collect my thoughts. That’s when I start getting the shakes because the adrenaline is kicking in. You think ‘What the heck did I just do?’, ya know? Holding on to these handle bars going 200 miles an hour, doing the quarter mile in seven seconds, it’s a pretty eventful ride.” So that’s all of the speed secrets to going quickly on an NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Harley-Davidson FXDR. Surely now any one of us could go out and do the same, reliably, run after run, for a 17-year professional career. Fuc&!n’ of course not. This guy has racing in his blood. He followed his brother and father into this two-wheeled motorsport life, and has spent his entire life at the track. None of us mere mortals even stand a chance. I’d sure like to give it a shot though. Just maybe on a slower bike. Reprinted By Permission

2020 Down Home Harley-Davidson Mardi Gras Celebration And Blazn’ Hot Wing Eating Contest By Scott Wicker

ust because it’s the winter months doesn’t mean

there isn’t something happening at Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington. On Saturday, February 29th they held their Annual Mardi Gras Celebration and Blazin’ Hot Wing Eating Contest. All were festive for the celebration and the show room was full of onlookers and participants for the Blazn’ Hot Wing Eating Contest. “DJ” Todd was there playing everyone’s favorite tunes and taking requests. As in years past, Marcel’s Catering out of Chapel Hill, NC provided some delicious Gumbo with all the fixings. It was GREAT! All departments were busy getting everyone ready for the upcoming riding season. Myrtle Beach Bike Week is just around the corner folks! The Motor Clothes® Department had all the new HD® apparel on display. The Service Department was busy getting Harley’s ready for the warm weather ahead and the Parts Department was busy answering questions and had all the new Harley-Davidson ® parts and accessories on display. Tables were lined up across the whole length of the show room with contestants eager to get the Blazn’ Hot Wing Eating Contest started. Each contestant had to sign a release form releasing the dealership from all responsibilities. I tried ONE. These wings were so HOT that most participants wore rubber gloves and there were a lot of paper towels on hand. All Contestants had a plate loaded with an equal number of hot wings. The first one who ate all the wings on their plate was considered the winner. Prizes were also given to the 2nd and 3rd places. It didn’t take long to crown the winner. Multiple time champion John Wesson was declared the winner. Scott Wright

L-R: the Winner, John Wesson, 2nd Place Scott Wright, & 3rd Place Andy Webb. finished 2nd and Andy Webb finished 3rd. It made me sweat just watching these guys. Congratulations to John, Scott, and Andy. Thank You to all the participants that braved the “heat”! Thank You to Down Home Harley-Davidson for this Great Event! Down Home Harley-Davidson would like to Thank Wings to Go of Burlington for Sponsoring the Event.

to the nearest lumberyard. After gathering the items she needed, Bev went up to the cashier and wrote a check. “I really need to see a photo ID,” the clerk said. “I don’t have one on me,” Bev replied. The cashier called over the manager, who examined the check. Then the manager looked up and asked Bev, “Who is the Avon lady in your town?” Puzzled, Bev responded, “Maxine Thompson.” “Take her check, the smiling manager said to the cashier. “Maxine is my grandmother.”

abusers of wearing leather, and we decided it was high time that we let them know that we disagree with them using it... Ergo, they should stop.” According to witnesses, protesters arrived at the event in a vintage 1960’s era Volkswagen van and began to pelt the gang members with balloons filled with red colored water, simulating blood, and shouting “you’re murderers” to passersby. This, evidently, is when the brouhaha began. “They peed on me!!!” charged one activist. “They grabbed me, said I looked like I was French, started calling me ‘La Trene’, and duct taped me to a tree so they could pee on me all day!” “I... I was trying to show my outrage at a man with a heavy leather jacket. And, he... he didn’t even care. I called him a murderer, and all he said was, ‘You can’t prove that.’ Next thing I know is he forced me to ride on the back of his motorcycle all day, and would not let me off, because his girlfriend was out of town and he said, “I was almost a woman.” Still others claimed they were forced to eat hamburgers and hot dogs under duress. Those who resisted were allegedly held down while several bikers who farted on their heads. Police officials declined comments on any leads or arrests due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, however, organizers for the motorcycle club rally expressed “surprise” at the allegations. “That’s preposterous,” said on high ranking member of the biker organizing committee. “We were having a party, and these people showed up and were very rude to us. They threw things at us, called us names, and tried to ruin the entire event. So, what did we do? We invited them to the party! What could be more friendly than that”? You know, just because we are all members of motorcycle clubs does not mean we do not care about inclusiveness. Personally, I think it shows a lack of character for them to be saying such nasty things about us after we bent over backwards to make them feel “welcome.” When confronted with the allegations of force feeding the activists meat, using them as ad hoc latrines, leaving them incapacitated in fast food restaurant dumpsters, and ‘farting on their heads,’ the organizer declined to comment in detail. “That’s just our secret handshake,” assured the organizer.

Two others, previously reported missing, were discovered by fast food workers “duct taped inside several fast food restaurant dumpsters,” according to police officials. “Something just went wrong,” said a still visibly shaken organizer of the protest. “Something just went horribly, horribly, wrong.” The organizer said a group of concerned animal rights activist groups, “growing tired of throwing fake blood and shouting profanities at older women wearing leather or fur coats,” decided to protest the annual motorcycle club event “in a hopes of showing them our outrage at their wanton use of leather in their clothing and motor bike seats.” “In fact,” said the organizer. “Motorcycle gangs are one of the biggest
