n the fairytale Alice In Wonderland, Lewis Carroll wrote, “Begin at the beginning,”…. “and go on till you come to the end: then stop.” Well, we are not at the end, but we are at the 20th Anniversary of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. So, I will begin at the beginning and share with you just how this all came about. At Daytona Bike Week in the Spring of ’98, I saw a copy of the Florida edition of Full Throttle Magazine. I added it to the collection of brochures, handouts, and t-shirts that had accumulated over the week and didn’t see it again until I got back home to NC. Having lived in Florida in the 70s, I recognized some of the places mentioned and thought how nice it would be if there was a similar publication available where we lived. Intrigued by that idea, I called the publication and inquired about that possibility. By now it was June and “Gypsy” answered the phone and said, “We have been waiting on you to call”. Later I would learn that he was quite witty, but the conversation led to an appointment to follow up on the idea of having a local Full Throttle Magazine in NC. In the evening, after that meeting, Molly and I were enjoying a beverage on the 9th floor balcony of my father’s condo overlooking the Gulf Of Mexico. We were discussing the idea and whether we should undertake such an endeavor when a large meteorite went flaming across the sky. It seemed as if it was right in front of us and as it streaked by, I hesitated to ask Molly if she had seen it, too, for fear that it would disappear as I spoke. But she did see it and we both took it as a sign and agreed that we would start publishing a Full Throttle Magazine in the Carolinas. (look for it on every month’s cover) It was, indeed, an adventure as neither of us had any experience in publishing, but in spite of that, we got our first shipment of 10,000 40 page magazines in late July. When I saw them, my only thought was, “What were we going to do with all of them?” We handed out magazines to every biker and motorcycle oriented business we could think of. Just when we thought that we were done, it was time to start all over again with issue #2. And down the proverbial “rabbit hole” we went. A lot has changed in 20 years! We have seen friends, events, businesses, and other publications come and go, but 240 issues later The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is still on the scene. We have added features, sales people, and advertisers over the years, all while gaining stature until becoming the #1 biker magazine in the Carolinas. We now have more distribution over a wider are than ever before and a presence in the electronic/social media that makes The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine a real asset for readers and advertisers alike. I want to thank all of our readers, sales people, and advertisers for helping us make it happen. On Saturday, July 7, Raging Bull Harley-Davidson held their annual “First Responders Appreciation Day”, honoring the Durham police, Fire, EMT, and County Sheriff’s departments for the services they provide to us, and to remember the life and sacrifice of recently fallen Officer Christopher Driver, of the Rocky Mount Police Department. Officer Driver died in the line of duty on June 22, 2018. Live music from “The New Hillbillies” and free hotdogs, hamburgers, and cold drinks greeted the squad cars, fire trucks, and ambulances that rolled into the parking lot throughout the day. Also present were a number of volunteer groups that support Defenders MC and The National Alliance For Law Enforcement these men and women from behind the scenes, including the Support (NAILS).

By: Rose and Lloyd he Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Bike Night Tour was at JR’s Corner Tavern at 901 Greensboro Road in High Point, NC on Wednesday, June 20th for their weekly bike night. JR’s featured local legend Tony “Mad Dog” King as the guest bar tender that night, so you know it was a packed house. The Full Throttle Magazine group is showing up at different bike nights to hang out and pass out some #FTBikeNightTour shirts. An Evening At Riding High Harley-Davidson By: WildThing ave you had a chance to visit the all-new Riding High Harley-Davidson dealership, yet? Well, if you haven’t, you should. It is magnificent! Many might ask where did this new dealership come from? Really, if you have to ask that, you are not paying attention to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Some old timers who don’t get around much may have even cruised on over to the old H-D of Greensboro location on Farragut Street and been quite surprised to find an empty building. Well, the answer to all this is HarleyDavidson of Greensboro has been transformed! Same owner and a lot of the same staff, but brand-new building and location. They have moved to 3036 NC Hwy 68 in High Point, NC. Please go by and see what’s going on. As a special gesture on Thursday, June 28 Riding High invited all Triad H.O.G. and Triad Bad Lasses to a Member’s Only after-hours party. Upon arrival, members received a

scavenger hunt list of questions about the dealership that beckoned them to take a good look around. A real nice spread of munchies and beverages was set out for everyone to enjoy and special discounts on MotorClothes and Genuine H-D Parts were offered to members in attendance. A guided tour of the facility was led by Riddim from the Marketing Department. He effectively answered all the questions on the list that the participants were stumped on. We viewed the new dealership inside and out. Starting out on the sales floor, we took note of the cool new logo on the floor just inside the main entrance, then we walked past the sales staff cubicles and into the service and parts departments. A normal visitor to the dealership doesn’t always get to go into the service area to see for themselves where the highly trained technicians work on their motorcycles. Out the Service entranceway, we viewed The Riding Academy track at the back of the building and the classroom with its own entrance at the side, ready to train some new riders. Also, along the side of the building is the charging station for electric vehicles, whenever one is driven there. Soon to be a landmark, the huge dragon painted on the front of the building is attracting a lot of attention after the initial surprise of the new building on this former inconsequential wooded lot. Neighbors’ reactions as well as visitors’ reaction to the dragon is already launching a legacy. The dragon hasn’t gotten a name yet. To cap off the evening, when you turned in your questionnaire, you were given door prize ticket and some real nifty H-D gear was given away as well as a $200 gift card. Folks don’t, however, need a special invitation or a special occasion to head over to the new Riding High Harley-Davidson. It’s a destination worth visiting, so dust off your bike and ride on over to say hi.

What Does Psalm 23 Mean To You? Bros and Bro-ettes, hings happen for a reason in our life, might be good might be bad, and sometimes we wonder why. We always want to question things. We even question God. We need to put our trust in Him and learn not to question God. We might not like what He says or the path He takes us on, but always remember He’ll never lead us down the wrong path, but if we decide to take it upon ourselves it’s hard telling where we’ll end up or what we’ll do. God has a reason for allowing things to happen to us and our family. The Lord never said we wouldn’t have problems, but He did say they wouldn’t last forever. Our fights and battles are not ours alone. We need to ask and believe that the Lord will help us if we’ll let Him. God has a plan for each and every one of us. Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want (Only if we ask). 2: He makes me lie down in green pastures: He leads me beside the still waters. 3: He restores my soul: He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. 4: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: (because He’s always with me) For you are always with me: Your rod and staff, they comfort me (Trust and believe). 5: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: you anoint my head with oil: my cup

runs over. 6: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. We need to step aside and let the Lord restore our soul. Stop trying to do it all ourselves. Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy but Jesus defeated him (like it says in verse 4). In verse 5, He gives us things. Jesus uses the Holy Spirit to walk with us, (so you’re never alone). Verse 6, It tells us we don’t have to die to dwell in Him. All we have to do is accept Him into our hearts, praise Him, and thank Him for what we have now. You won’t have to worry about tomorrow because you have the Lord and He takes care of us. People tell you every day they’ll be by your side, NOT, but there’s One that will never leave you or let you down. That’s the Lord because He is your shepherd. If you don’t know Him and want Him to be your Shepherd read and pray the bikers’ prayer. We were created to bring God’s Word to the world. Minibike Drags At Shadyside Dragway

Story and photo by Alan Dockery ’all know how guys are. If two guys have similar vehicles they are gonna race. Then a few more are gonna show up to race. Someday they’ll have too much time and money in whatever they are racing. And big smiles to show for it. Well, folks, Minibike RacNot sure when or ing is quickly how minibikes spreading across became popular the country. The again. Upstate SC Minibikes held their first race at Shadyside Dragway in Boiling Springs, NC, on the last Thursday night of June. I took Ole Blue since she’s been down that strip before with the old slow motor. Not sure when or how minibikes became popular again. I attribute it partly to the fact that us old guys can now buy the machines we had or wanted and couldn’t afford when young. We bought them for our kids and grandkids. I used that excuse a few times. But lots of young people are into minibikes now, too. For years, we raced them occasionally just for fun. At the

Harley Drags we used to do Toby Races with the tow bikes. The Smoke Out has had minibike races as long as I’ve been going. But now young folks are forming minibike clubs and having serious races. Durand Bagwell started Upstate SC Minibikes a few months ago and drew a crowd at their first race. All kinds of bikes showed up to see what was going on. There were bikes barely running more than 20 mph to ones going more than 60 in the eighth mile. My best pass was 16 seconds at 35 mph! Shadyside Dragway is a private, country drag strip not under a national sanction’s rules. That means kids can race there. So, future drag racers can learn how the starting line works and make lots of passes. Bring your kids and minibikes and have fun. “June 28 was our first drag night at Shadyside,” Durand said. “We had more than 30 bikes and 100 people show up. The Upstate SC Minibikes Facebook page was created just four weeks before the meet. Our goal was to give kids a way to get on the track without spending a bunch of money on junior dragsters. There was a large response from adults wanting to race as well.” “We plan on having a group track night once a month and a couple of big races a year with dates and times of events posted on our Facebook page. Future plans include a few classes to race in. Kids 12 and under. Stock cast carb and pull start class. An outlaw class where anything is legal as long as it’s a single-cylinder, air-cooled, four-stroke with a clutch or torque converter. We might even start a Top Ten list with open callouts in the future,” Durand said. The first Minibike Drags at Shadyside Dragway went well. It was a regular open test and tune night so there were plenty of cars there ranging from guys in their ratty fast and furious wanna be cars to serious race machines. I think the track folks liked us and might have a big Minibike Race someday.

3rd Annual Fundraiser Hosted By Full Gospel Tabernacle

By: Elaine Bailey ull Gospel Tabernacle of Graham, NC hosted its 3rd annual fundraiser for Dedicated Youth for Christ (DYFC). The activities were held Saturday, July 14th at the church. There were about 25 local bikers that attended the event. Phil Abram mapped out the route for the bikers to take, which lasted around an hour and twenty minutes. Some of the bikers included Darrel Solomon who is the Alamance

County Chapter president for the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA) and a few of their local members. There was food, games, and special prayer services offered by members and Pastor Kevin Barbour. Also provided was a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards for best looking bikes. With the food sales and donations, they raised an about of $800 to help sponsor children to attend the camp. It took several volunteers to help organize the event. While Darrel and Lori Solomon worked on flyers and made contacts, Donna Melvin tackled the internet-media for participants. There were also a number of church volunteers to help with the set up of food, games, and cleanup. The weather was pleasant and the ride was safe and enjoyable for all who attended. DYFC is a non-profit organization that was started by Steve and Beth Conger to help children come to know Christ. The camp is usually in July and can accommodate up to 235 people. The ages for the camp are from 10-19. However, at the age of 19 the students can apply to be workers. Everyone involved with the camp are volunteers working as teachers, counselors, cooks, janitors, assistants in activities, and dorm monitors. The money raised helps cover facility cost, food, and perishable materials used during their six-day stay. The facility is located in High Point. Native Sons MC Trail Of Tears Chapter 4th Annual Canned Food Drive By: April Bowling n Saturday, June 16th, the Native Sons MC Trail of Tears Chapter held their 4th Annual Canned Food Drive benefiting the Food Bank of Eastern NC and With Love, From Jesus at Krafty’s in Garner, NC. The event managed to raise over $1000 worth of canned food and close to $1000 in cash donations. There was wonderful turnout, considering the event was competing with Smoke Out and many other great events throughout North Carolina, with over 150 people. Daphne McDaniel from Double D Entertainment was the emcee for the event. The musical entertainment included The Vault, that started the event and really get things going. Jessie Kat and the Fireballs rocked the house as the main act with their amazing cover songs. There were also vendors that set up booths to sell products, including Damsel in Defense, Scentsy, Yes2PainFree, and LipSense to name a few. There were so many raffle drawings for all types of different prizes. The raffles included gift certificates to restaurants and stores, a custom leather bracelet from Schrum Graphics, Harley-Davidson Riding Academy class from Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson, an extremely adult toy from Pure Romance, and a helmet from Cycle Gear. The event ended with three extremely happy winners that had the winning tickets for an AR-15, a SAR home defense shotgun and $100 cash.

Back The Blue In Spartanburg

By: Wally Wersching partanburg H-D was holding a Spartanburg County Perimeter Run to support Spartanburg Crime Stoppers. It started at Spartanburg H-D with a stop for lunch about mid-way through the ride and then continuing around the perimeter and ending back at the dealership for ice cream and cake along with some entertainment. I arrived a little after 9:15 am and parked out of the way so “Miss Vickie” wouldn’t interfere with the other bikes when they left. There was already a good crowd milling around the registration table outside. I gave a donation, and then went

inside to talk with Carl, the general manager. He told me more about the perimeter run. He was wearing one of the Spartanburg Crime Stoppers t-shirts and had another on his desk. He always buys two for $15 each. That’s one way they get money for the Crime Stoppers. The other is from the $10 registration for the run or donations. After I left Carl’s office, I looked around the showroom at the new Harleys. I looked up and saw their collection of classic motorcycles. It’s like their own little museum. They have all kinds of old motorcycles not just Harleys. There are three Indians (including a 1938 Indian Four, and a 1947

Indian Bonneville), a 1955 Vincent, a 1920’s Ner-a-Car, and of course a few old Harleys. Most people don’t even know that they are there because they are focusing on the new bikes on the floor. I walked outside to see a few more bikes in the lot. Most of the people were wearing the Crime Stoppers t-shirts. It looked like the event would be a success. Most of the bikes were Harleys or Japanese cruisers. There was one Indian motorcycle to compliment my Victory – both made by Polaris. There was an old Harley 45 cubic inch which looked like it was from the 1940’s. It looked pretty stock except for the foot-shifter and hand clutch instead of the old style tank shifter with the foot-clutch. It still looked like it could be a rough ride with no rear suspension and the small 1940’s brakes. As 10 o’clock approached, they wanted everybody to come together in front of the dealership for a group photo. It was comical to see them trying to get the whole group to move a little to the left and get closer together. It reminded me of a MASH episode where Hawkeye was taking the group’s picture and moved the whole group back and forth until the picture was just right. After a prayer and briefing, the bikes lined up to leave. I went to the road to get pictures of them as they left the dealership lot. Before I knew it, all was quiet again, and “Miss Vickie” was the only motorcycle in the lot. It would stay quiet until about 3 pm when the group came back for ice cream and cake. I left and made it home about 11:30. Cindy and I went out for a nice lunch. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning

The Big Bikes For Purple Hearts Ride

The ride started with registration at American Legion Post 55 in Winston-Salem, NC. There were approximately 300 bikes and over 500 people according to a post by Jack Waters, founder of the Bike Bikes For Purple Hearts. What a great turn out and planning by Jack Waters,

Steve Melton, Elaine Dills, and the Big Bikes For Purple Hearts planning team! Kudos! I would be amiss if I didn’t give a HUGE shout out to Jeff Hufford and Steve Belcher of the American Legion Riders Post 55 for the masterful parking of all those bikes! Kayla Watson gave us a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. We left American Legion Post 55 after the Legendary “Riders Start Your Engines” command. We were escorted out by the WinstonSalem Police Department Motor Officers, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department Motor Officers and the Winston-Salem Fire Department. Purple Heart recipient Justin Vocke was the honorary Purple Heart Ride Captain, with Steve Melton Head Ride Captain, Jack and Rhonda Waters, and Elaine Dills following. It took approximately 6 ½ minutes to get all the bikes out of the parking lot. Our motorcycle escort lead us on a safe, seamless ride through Forsyth and Davidson County. I would also like give a shout out to the Davidson County Motor Officer and all the volunteer fire departments, etc. for letting us ride without putting our feet down until we arrived at Smokin’ Harley Davidson for food, drawings, and music by Kayla Watson and Tiffany Ashton! STE Powersports Customer Appreciation Day By: Gary Steelman TE Powersports held its customer appreciation day on June 16th. There were vendors selling everything from hotdogs to used Harley parts and riding apparel. The bike deals were as hot as the weather. Clyde and the staff were hammering out deals all day long. The band “Almost Famous” played the favorites all day and had the crowd grooving and Shelby’s from Love Valley supplied the ice cold refreshments. That cold refreshing brew was welcome in the heat of the day. The deals weren’t only on the bikes, Gene’s Motor Clothes had great deals on jackets and gear for every rider. Simpson Performance Products of Mooresville had great deals on helmets and gear as well. The deals were all around the lot, I

picked up a few shirts and some parts for my old ride. The bikini bike wash girls were kept busy putting a shine on them bikes and smiles on the owners’ faces. Shiney bikes and wet ladies will do that! The day ended with a couple of hotdogs from Wilson’s Weenie Wagon and a cold drink, more door prizes, and a 50/50 drawing. Do yourself a favor and attend the next STE Powersports customer appreciation day, maybe trade up to a newer bike, and have a great time; get a new shine or a new pair of boots and a new jacket. Women In The Wind Southeast Meetup By: Ed Cleary omen in the Wind held their Southeast Meetup in Raleigh over this last weekend. This meetup, affectionately called the “Purple Pearls Party”, was organized to bring good cheer and support to one of their own, wind sister Kat Hafer. Kat has just been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and has relocated back to her home town of Raleigh from the Washington D.C. area for treatment. Women in the Wind is an international group of female riders represented by 118 chapters in 7 countries, with a membership of over 1200 ladies. WITW was founded by Becky Brown in 1979. Our Right To Choose Ride

By: Jill Stillwell, President, Gaston County CBA/ABATE of NC. n July 4th, the Gaston County Chapter of the Concerned Bikers Association / ABATE of NC held our annual “Our Right To Choose Ride” to protest the fact that as adults we do not have the choice of Invite your whether or not to legislators to wear a helmet. The attend the CBA/ABATE of beginning of NC is NOT against helmets, but we do your ride and believe that as adults if they ride, we should be able to invite them to choose if we want ride with you. to wear one or not. Yes, we understand that there are arguments on all sides of the issue regarding helmets and safety. Statistically though, in 2016 the fatality rate in jurisdictions/states that had mandatory helmet laws was 61.11 per 100,000 registered motorcycles. In the jurisdictions/ states that allowed adults to choose whether or not to wear a helmet was 60.76. That is only 0.35 difference! We started, as we do every year, in the Belmont, NC Roses

Then Bill led the large group of bikers through several municipalities in the county ending up at the Gaston County Courthouse in Gastonia. Continued From pg # 38 We want to encourage all CBA/ ABATE of NC Chapters, motorcycle and riding clubs to have your own protest ride to demonstrate to our legislators that we want legislation passed that would allow us the “Right To Choose”. Invite your legislators to attend the beginning of your ride and if they ride, invite them to ride with you. Send pictures of your ride to all legislators that represent your riders and have your riders sign a petition to accompany those pictures. This doesn’t need to be on the 4th of July, but what better way to spend the morning of our Independence Day than to ride for a freedom that has been lost and should be restored? We are very blessed that the legislators in Gaston County are on our side in this fight for freedom of choice on whether or not to wear a helmet. We also want to encourage all bikers in NC to join the CBA/ABATE of NC as we are the only motorcycle rights organization in the state that fights for your rights in the NC General Assem-

bly. To join go to www.cba-abatenc.org. The Gaston County chapter is one of the largest in the state with over 400 members and has been supporting the local biker community since 2006. The goals of this association are many which include: improving the public image of motorcycling, participating in public service events and charitable projects within our local and surrounding communities, promoting fair legislation pertaining to motorcyclists, working to prevent unjust enactments that discriminate against motorcyclists and working to repeal unfair legislation already in place. This is always a very special ride for Gaston County as it has been going on since we received our charter from the CBA/ABATE of NC. And again, we are not against helmets but we do want the “Right to Choose”. We hope to see you next 4th of July at 10:30 am to ride with us. Smoke Out 19 Still The Best East Coast Chopper Rally Story and photos by Alan Dockery and Lincoln Infield e had about the nicest weather yet on the third weekend of June for the 19th Smoke Out Rally held at Rockingham Dragway, NC. I saw 11 raindrops and many thousands of bikers there for the weekend. The Smoke Out kicks off Friday afternoon and I suggest folks make a pass through the vendors and exhibitors first thing. See who is there, who you want to come back and talk to more, start thinking about what you need to buy. Soon there are things going on all over the property and you are busy trying to enjoy it all. The sound of Sam White’s Top Fuel Harley crackling nitro methane lets everyone know the party is started. Before the official greeting and the bands take the main stage, you can already hear bikes roaring down the famous Rockingham Drag Strip. Yeah, folks, for a few hours at a time the drag strip was open for us to make passes. Old fashioned grudge racing with a pretty girl to flag the start. Quickly, the Smoke Out comes alive and people gather near the stage. The Stroker Stogie Beard and Mustache contest had guys showing off their face fur. I dig the Freak Show Deluxe while cringing at the things they do. There’s always so much to see and do at the Smoke Out: biker games going on in the grass, the Deathwish Motor Culture Stunt Team layin’ down rubber on the pavement, and it goes on and on. Edge, Smoke Out promoter, picked some fine bands this year. D. B. Bryant kicked off the party. Dave Schneider’s band kept the crowd singing along. After dark the wet t-shirt contest drew a crowd to the stage.

Then my favorite, Rebel Son, started raising hell. They always draw a big crowd with their rowdy honky tonk rockabilly style music. Lee, lead singer, says the Smoke Out is their favorite event of the year to play and man did they show it. After Rebel Son closed out the evening about midnight, the party moved to the campground. Rockin’ The Campgrounds

Some folks come just for the official Smoke Out Rally. Party inside the fence and go to the hotel or RV area at night. Well, there is a whole nother part of the Smoke Out – The Campgrounds. Thousands of people from all over the country fill the huge field north of the dragstrip. Y’all oughta see some of the vehicles and hootches people bring to the campgrounds. Edge, describes it as looking like a Mad Max

movie out there. Bikers could walk around and visit with the many thousands of people camping. Hundreds of folks headed over to the burnout pit to watch guys rev it up for the Smoke Out. If you’re allergic to bike abuse, smoky burn outs, and seeing guys light cigarettes off of glowing exhaust pipes, I suggest you avoid the burn out pit. Near the burnouts is the campground stage. Edge booked good bands to play late into the night. Friday the

I always laugh at the people who pull into the campgrounds and setup near the burnout pit thinking they are away from the gate and party and noise over there. Ha Ha Ha hours later they figure out they are next to the late night party.

old ratty bikes that look like what I rode when I was young and built whatever I could afford are the norm. The crowd comes from all over the country, all ages, and all kinds of people. We are the Smoke Out Family, and this is our reunion. “The bike show is the heart of the event and in 2018 we had so much more new and exciting media coverage,” Edge said. “American Iron, Hot Bike, Bikernet, Chop Cult, and staff from almost every major motorcycle magazine were at the Smoke Out. If you were one of the ten winners your bike is getting featured. The media coverage was exponentially bigger than at any time in the past since not associated with just one magazine.” These are the winning bikes chosen by the magazine editors and staff.

Saturday, the Smoke Out shifts into high gear. Lots of bikers arrive for just the day. The vendors are ready for a crowd. There are exhibits and training classes at several of the builders’ displays where they give tips on everything from bending metal to laying on custom paint. There were also contests to participate in. Guys got a chance to show off beards, mustaches, and tattoos. Early in the afternoon there was a Painted Ladies contest. Paints and brushes were provided. Bodies were the canvas. And y’all judged folks’ “artwork.” The Chili Pepper Eating Contest winner had to have an iron mouth and stomach. Oh yeah, there were more bands Saturday playing just about all day. The Blue Pickups started us off. The Creepshow fired up the crowd as the sun went down. Sneaky Tree, Spacey’s band, closed out the Smoke Out Saturday night with a hard rockin’ show. Once in a while a military aircraft would fly over low and slow. With North Carolina’s military bases not far away, flight training routes nearby, and lots of GIs at the Smoke Out the flight crews were wishing they were with us.

It’s All About The Choppers The main focus of the Smoke Out is choppers. Lots of cool bikes were gathered under and around the big tent for the Garage Built Ride In Bike Show. Plus, there are so many sharp bikes parked and cruising the grounds. The Smoke Out is the best bike show of the year. You won’t see the same fad following machines as other shows. Plan more time to check out the bikes instead of just walking by them. I tell folks the Smoke Out ain’t quite the same as most bike rallies. Not a lot of the same expensive new bikes you see at most places. Real customs, built by bikers and small shops,

As The Smoke Out approaches its 20th year, organizers and attendees strive to ensure it keeps lots of the old atmosphere and attitude. Events change over the years, but the Smoke Out is still about old-style choppers and unique, homebuilt machines. Yes, some of the folks from the magazine that was associated with the Smoke Out for years were not there. They have new ownership and management and are changing. Well, many more people stepped up to become part of the Smoke Out’s future. I expect the 20th Smoke Out Rally to be one big awesome party. “It was a really great year,” Edge said. “We added minibike drag racing which turned out pretty cool. Sam White did four nitro runs and broke 200 mph. The Creepshow killed it as a band. I am already looking to bring back as many builders from the old days as we can. The 20th Anniversary Smoke Out will be the most spectacular event we have ever done.”

I know the list of folks to thank for putting on the Smoke Out would fill a page. When I asked Edge he said, “I always miss too many people. Thanks to Paul from Jamboozie Custom for taking the signage to a new high, Tim Gelay for such a great job on the minibike races, Deathwish Motor Culture for the new stunt team, Sam White for the Nitro Harley runs, Damian from Billet Proof Design for the incredible bike show trophies, Hawk Brothers Cycle for the new biker games and the awesome minibike trophies, and Paul Jakub from Liquid Latex for the support and the beautiful women that got naked and painted.” Minibike Races

I gotta tell y’all about the minibike races, too. I’ve had minibikes for years as kids’ rides and pit bikes. Well, guys are gonna race anything and they have been racing minibikes at the Smoke Out for a while. Tim Gelay and the Mutha Country Crew managed the Minibike Races. He did a great job get-

ting more folks to race and starting Minibike Drags on Friday. Yeah, we set up a strip in the staging lanes and went at it. Some guys brought serious minibikes set up to drag race. You know guys can buy a hundred dollar Predator motor and spend a thousand bucks building it. Some were bangin’ the wheelie bars hard. Ole Blue was pretty fast held wide open and the brakes are worse than I thought when going fast. Tyler Duke won the Minibike Drags. Saturday was the big minibike races with several classes and super hero costumes. I was back with an electric-start motor in Old Blue, my WalMartian costume and brakes that make more noise than stopping action. It’s a hoot to see bikers racing cool little mini bikes and dressing up in super hero costumes. They ran a sidecar race and drift trikes, too. Drift trikes are powered big wheel type machines that look like the back half of a go-cart with a bicycle front end. Too much fun! Y’all need to bring something to race next year. Richard Hatcher kept General Lee out front to win the drift

trike race. Chad and Dawn Hood (The Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood) won the sidecar race. Dawn Hood won the powder puff class. Cameron Carter celebrated winning the Main Feature minibike race with friends, beer, and burnouts. Thanks Hawk Brothers for the cool trophies. Nathan brought an old minibike for Austin to race this year. I built an extra racer last winter and Aaron stepped up to ride it for me. Well, the Red Bird vs Blue Bird Race Team did alright. Both guys won their heats and Aaron finished third in the Main. That night we took them to the burnout pit and smoked the tires bald. I need some fearless, little lady to race Blue Bird next year so it can run in more races. With so much to do and see and friends to hang out with, the Smoke Out goes by too fast. David and Missi Thompson wanted to have an area to honor friends and family, a place where love ones could see what they meant to the biker family. At Sunday Fun Day. on July 7th, a lady that loves Double D’s Burnout Saloon and the family she has there had previously ask David if she could bury her son that she lost 4 years before in the Memorial Garden. She said she felt such a connect to the home of so many bikers, and Double D’s Burnout Saloon would have been the kind of place her son would have loved. There was a short ceremony with Tony “Mad Dog” King helping her dig a spot. Tony prayed that his soul be at rest, then they placed a black velvet box in the spot and poured a shot Crown Royal over the box. She finally got to lay her son to rest. It was a touching tribute. As Tony said, “We, as bikers, are all family, and Double D’s Burnout Saloon family gives a new meaning to the devotion of family”.

Founded in the early 2000’s, Ruff Ryders Lifestyles has since grown far beyond the expectations of the label. The name “Lifestyles” is derived from the life that a Ruff Ryder lives. These aspects of RRlife have been displayed in all Ruff Ryder videos ever aired. You can go to YouTube or catch a video on TV and you will find some elements of fitness, show quality cars and motorcycles, along with top bloodline Pitbull’s. These aspects set the tone for the different branches of Ruff Ryders lifestyles. After the mainstream release of Ruff Ryders Anthem by DMX, featuring Swizz Beatz, a motorcycle revolution was started. Bike sales went up, more people wanted to ride in large numbers, and any trick performed on a sport bike was considered Ruff Ryding or a Ruff Ryder. After touring the country, a member of the stunt team realized that there was a following for the Ruff Ryders stunt team outside of the following for the music and artists. This is when Ruff Ryders decided to extend its brand to the streets. At the time it had to make business sense for the betterment of the music label, so the brand was licensed to local markets to create the ultimate street team to assist in record promotions. Cochlears For Carson

By: Wally Wersching cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. Cochlear implants bypass the normal hearing process. They have a sound processor that resides on the outside of the skin (and generally worn behind the ear) which contains microphones, electronics, battery, and a coil which transmits a signal to the implant. The implant has a coil to receive signals, electronics, and an array of electrodes which is placed into the cochlea, which stimulate the cochlear nerve. CI’s have been around since the 1960’s when doctors implanted a six channel electrode in a patient’s cochlea at Stanford University. The modern multichannel cochlear implant was developed and commercialized in the late 1970’s. Carson has been using and loving his cochlear implants for years. His family was just notified that the parts for his current implants will no longer be available. New implants must be ordered. The family’s insurance company said that they would pay all but $6,000. The $6,000 must be paid up front before the new implants can be ordered. The Gargoyles MC came to the rescue by holding a poker run on Saturday June 30th to help pay the insurance deductible and allow Carson to continue hearing by buying the new implants. The additional stops along the way were: the Kings Mountain Tavern, Zippers in Lincolnton, the Gargoyles Lincolnton Clubhouse, and then back to the starting point for the meal included in the $15 registration fee. They were going in groups rather than individually. The first group was to leave the Fallston House about 11:00AM, and the last group would leave at about noon. I arrived at the house at about 10 am. I had never been there before or to any of the Gargoyles events in the past. They were all busy working – getting ready for the run by setting up tables and preparing food in the kitchen for when the ride returned. They were very pleasant. I shared some copies of

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine with them and put them on the registration table for everyone to enjoy. After talking with some club members, I was very impressed. They told me what they had to do to get the building habitable again. The house had been abandoned for years. So much so that all that was visible from the road was the chimney. The rest of the old farm house was hidden by overgrowth. They cleaned it up, and now it’s a very presentable clubhouse. People started riding up, and parking around the yard. They went to the back porch to register, and then mingle with the other bikers waiting for the run to start. Many went inside to get a cool drink while they waited. A group of Windjammers rode in. The local motorcycle clubs all support each other’s events. It’s a very tight biker community. I met a young man who I used to work with years ago. We started talking. It was good to hear about the old workplace. It brought back a lot of memories – mostly good but not all. Then it was getting close to the first group leaving. Bikers went to their bikes and waited for the command to fire them up. They didn’t want to sit there on an idling motorcycle. It was too hot. One of the Gargoyles, rode down the gravel driveway, and parked in the road. Then more and more bikes followed him and parked two by two on the road. When all the bikes in the first group were out of the yard, they took off with a roar to the first stop – the Kings Mountain Tavern. After the first group left, I walked back to “Miss Vickie” to head home when I noticed another Victory motorcycle parked in front of the house. I remembered it from the Bike Blessing in Lincolnton. It is owned by one of the Lincolnton Gargoyles. After saying good-by to everybody, I headed home to take Cindy out for lunch. I had a very pleasant time, and I learned that enough money was raised to help Carson get his new cochlear implants. I made a lot of new friends and will be watching for any new Gargoyle events. I will definitely try to attend.

Motorcyclists – E-15 May Be Coming To Your Neighborhood By: Matt Danielson epresentative Austin Scott from Georgia has introduced a bill (you guessed it, H.R. 5855) that would, among other things, expand consumer awareness on how to safely use fuel containing more than 10 percent The Environmental ethanol, including improved Protection Agency fuel pump labeling, fuel pump (EPA) is once safeguards, and education again pushing for outreach. The bill, H.R. 5855, is entitled the Consumer increased use of Protection and Fuel Transparethanol in fuel ency Act. It is being strongly blends supported by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), who reported the introduction of the bill earlier this month. Why should motorcyclists be interested in H.R. 5855? I am glad you asked. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is once again pushing for increased use of ethanol in fuel blends. E-10, gasoline that contains ten percent ethanol, is widely available across the United States. Chances are that the last time you filled your tank, you pumped it full of E-10. Now we are seeing E-15, gasoline with 15 percent etha-

nol, pop up at fuel pumps around the country. That is a 50% increase in ethanol. Many in Congress have been pushing for more availability of E-15, especially those who represent constituents in corn producing states. Ethanol is made from corn. The problem for motorcyclists is that ethanol can also cause damage to certain engines. Ethanol is a type of alcohol. Alcohol absorbs water from any source that it can, even the surrounding atmosphere. When alcohol that is dissolved in gasoline has absorbed enough water, it can separate from the gasoline and settle to the bottom of the tank and then be drawn into the engine. That is why The EPA has included motorcycles on the list of vehicles that should not use E-15. In fact, some manufacturers have warned that using E-15 can void the vehicle’s warranty. The MRF supports H.R. 5855, and in my opinion you should as well. If your local gas station is going to start using E-15, the pump should be clearly marked so that you can make an informed decision as to what you put in your tank. The MRF encourages all motorcyclists to contact their federal representatives and encourage them to support H.R. 5855. You can do so by going to the Motorcycle Riders Foundation website (MRF.org) Click on the Legislative tab at top of the page. The Legislative Action Center will take you to Federal Legislative Issues. There you will see a link for “My Motorcycle, My Choice.” If you use that link you can send an email to your congressman and senators encouraging them to support H.R. 5855. While you are there, if you are not already a member, consider joining the MRF. They are our watchdog in DC. Lord knows we need one. Harvest Gathering Benefit Ride

By: David Burnette he 1st Annual Harvest Gathering was a pretty good success. The weather was nice, just a little hot, but no rain and that’s always a plus. There were a few vendors lined up in front of the Smokin’ Harley-Davidson dealership selling their goods. Several ministries were set up as well. There were several different MC’s, RC’s, and Biker Ministries represented. Over $900 was raised to help with expenses to run the Harvest Camp. For those of you who don’t know, His Laboring Few Ministry operates a free 90 day in house drug rehab for men that are struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. The Harvest Camp sits on over 40 acres out in the country near Trinity, NC. The men are brought in and loved on and taught about the love of Jesus and are given tools to help overcome their addiction. There is no charge to them. All expenses come from donations from the community and people like you and me. Ladies Only Garage Party By: WildThing n an effort to open the dealership doors to women, Riding High Harley-Davidson hosted a Ladies Only Garage Party on July 11. All women interested in motorcycles were invited to attend, as well as women riders new to Riding High. In addition to regular staff, the dealership sponsored women’s riding group, the Triad Bad Lasses, (or TBL for short), assisted in the activities. Upon arrival at Riding High HarleyDavidson, ladies gathered around the refreshment table and the meet and greet was on. Chicken wings and adult beverages are always a good ice breaker and it didn’t take long for the guests to open up and the conversations turned to riding; what do you ride, and where have you ridden to? The Bad Lasses had a table set up with guest sign-up sheet and a slide show of pictures from past rides. Then Rhonda, the Triad Bad Lasses’ Director, split the ladies up into five groups and each group went round robin to

a different location in the dealership and heard a short presentation from a Riding High staff member. In the sales area, the financing options were discussed and next to the parts and accessories, the talk was on customizing your ride and emphasis was placed on LED headlights and tail lights, an important safety feature. Then the groups were directed to the service area and were introduced to the in-house dyno and informed as to the procedure there and why the dyno is used. Back to the showroom, the ladies were treated to a packing lesson with motorcycle luggage, showing how much gear can be packed easily into the expanding luggage. Liz also showed everyone how to properly fold a pair of chaps compactly, so they won’t fall open when you pull them out of the luggage or off your bike for that matter. As the info-tours wrapped up, the ladies wandered back to the refreshments area and the discussions continued. As the sunset colors filtered through the large front windows of the dealership signaled the evening, the TBL’s and guests filtered out and headed home. It was a really nice event, and hopes were high for some new converts to the Harley family as well as riding companions to the Triad Bad Lasses.

Crimson Crusaders 9th Annual Biker Breakfast By: Wally Wersching n Saturday morning June 23rd, the Crimson Crusaders Motorcycle Ministry held their 9th Annual Biker Breakfast at the Family Life Center of the Landmark Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. This was a charity event with all the proceeds going to Deploy, Inc. Deploy uses a network of businesses to provide services to families of deployed soldiers for home and auto emergencies. The services are for immediate or unexpected problems with home or auto assets but may also include referrals to other groups/agencies for financial resources, health, pet, spiritual, etc. For more info, go to: http:// deployinc.org. I arrived at the Landmark Baptist Church at about 8 am. There was already a small crowd of bikers. I was greeted with warm smiles as I approached the group. I knew a few but they are all friends now. We talked, and laughed about a lot of things, and then went in to eat breakfast. I watched as

the food was being prepared. The food must taste good because the cooks were all smiling during cooking. There was a lot of love mixed in with the scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and the like. I passed out a few copies of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine with the article about their 3rd Annual Biker Sunday in it. They all enjoyed seeing their event in print. It was a very full Sunday at the church, and a huge success. By having it in print, next year’s event might be bigger. As I ate my breakfast, I noticed a few more friends coming in, and donating to the cause before getting their breakfast. Some were from other biker ministries, and others were from local motorcycle clubs. The whole biker community comes together to help when needed. We all sat and talked for a while. It was a very relaxing and giving atmosphere. It is always enjoyable to just sit and talk with friends. We don’t do that enough. I said my good-byes and left about 9:15. I had a good feeling like I helped make a difference. That’s what charity does. It helps both those who are in need, and those who give. As I was leaving, the cooks were sitting outside on the picnic benches cooling off. It was very hot in the kitchen. I thanked them for cooking such a delicious meal.

Light, Jimmy Neeley, Dirty Mike Wagner, Butch Snodgrass, and Fred Vineyard were the charter members with Bob Light being elected as the first president. The club started with a little small block building in west Kingsport as their clubhouse before moving to a few other locations before finally purchasing land on Boozy Creek Road. That is where their clubhouse is located and the land for the two annual field events that hosts some of the best drags around. The Kentucky chapter started a short time later in 1968 after a couple of the guys were working in the Kingsport area on a construction site. That is when they met Tommy Dorton and Ralph Barrett. A few years later the Cincinnati, OH, chapter started. Then a chapter was started in North Wilkesboro, NC, which only lasted a few years. Ralph Barrett served as the president of the Tennessee chapter from 1973 until he retired in 2007. Ralph was the owner of Ralph’s Bar and Grill in Kingsport, which started in 1978. Ralph shut the doors down at the bar after he retired from being the president. Ralph’s Bar and Grill was the happening place for 30 years for all bikers. This bar was well known to all motorcycle clubs in the southeast. Today Ralph Barrett and Ray Clark, better known as Papaw, are the oldest living members of the Tennessee chapter both joining only a short time after the club started. While many of the old timers are gone, all chapters have a good membership with new young riders. While 2018 marks the 50th Anniversary for the club, everyone from all chapters feel confident that the Peacemakers MC will be around for a few more years. We didn’t play as many games as usual since taking time for the ceremonies and celebration. Folks were in a sit in the shade and sip shine mood. Kim fought the other girls to win the Tater Dig. Megan is fast on the Bouncy Ball. Cody, Jay,

and Josh are a tough to beat Ski Race team. Ain’t sure how Beetle won the Sledgehammer Spin, but he sure was having fun. Jay and Brittany turned us on in the Eat My Peach contest. Cody and Savannah are hard to beat in the Plunger Race. Cody has the technique to toss a beer keg, winning the Men’s class. Firecrotch won the Women’s Keg Toss. Greg showed Cody that a Harley can still win the Burnout Contest. And Cody ran the purple bike until it caught on fire and then put Savannah’s bike on the trailer and popped the tire. Sunday even more folks ride in for the day and the dirt drags. After a round of the race bikes taking to the track for qualifying, folks were ready to bring their own rides out for the bike show. Man, there were a bunch of fine machines at this little place in the hills. We did the bike show fast and I missed getting the winners. I was glad to see some new race bikes at Boozy Creek. It is a great place to let your kids race their dirt bikes. Big smiles when they wheelie and spin off the line. Josh worked on that Honda all day, broken clutch cable and busted the oil filter doing burnouts. But he had her running fine for the drags. Josh took Foreign Street Tire class and the overall Street Tire win, beating Rickie’s cool Shovelhead that took Harley Street Tire. Jonathan had a good time winning Foreign Open Knobby. James Shelton won the Money Class, and Brandon Luttrell was runner up. Y’all oughta build a race bike and get in on this fun. Expect more classes next year and more bikes like they used to run. The party ends with the Miss Boozy Creek contest. Angela was having a fun weekend and took home the big trophy. The Peacemakers MC hosts a cool, old fashioned biker party at their beautiful place in the Tennessee hills. Bring your race bike, field event partner, a good attitude, and y’all come join us. The clerk was ringing up the last of a pile of parts and accessories that would enhance the shiny new motorcycle sitting outside. “Are you buying all this?” his wife asked incredulously. “Well, yes,” he said, embarrassed. Then waving his arm toward the interior of the store, he added, “But look at all the stuff I’m leaving behind.”

Yesterday my daughter e-mailed me again, asking why I didn’t do something useful with my time. “Like sitting on the couch, watching TV and drinking wine is not a good thing?” I asked. Talking about my “doing-something-useful” seems to be her favorite topic of conversation. She was “only thinking of me”, she said and suggested that I go down to the Senior Center and hang out with the guys. I did this and when I got home last night, I decided to play a prank on her. I e-mailed her and told her that I had joined a Parachute Club. She replied, “Are you nuts? You are 79 years old and now you’re going to start jumping out of airplanes?” I told her that I even got a Membership Card and e-mailed a copy to her. She immediately telephoned me and yelled, “Good grief, dad, where are your glasses?” This is a membership in a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club!” “Oh man, I’m in trouble again,” I said, “I really don’t know what to do. I signed up for five jumps a week!” The line went quiet and her friend picked up the phone and said that my daughter had fainted. Life as a Senior Citizen is not getting any easier, but sometimes it can be fun.

Twenty Years In The Making By: WildThing wenty years is a long time in anybody’s book. Think about it, where were you and what were you doing twenty years ago? Yeah, most of us can remember the highlights of life in that time span, and that makes recognizing and celebrating accomplishments notable occurrences. Twenty years ago, Mark Wheelihan and his family moved from California to North Carolina and he purchased the HarleyDavidson dealership on Farragut Street in Greensboro. He changed the name from Young’s Harley-Davidson to Harley-Davidson of Greensboro and began operating as such on July 18, 1998. Over the years, he transformed the struggling dealership into a vibrant place whose family of Harley riders made a difference in the community. Mark immediately became involved in local events, most notably the Brenner Children’s Hospital Annual Toy Run, of which he still is the leader and organizer. He purchased the property next door and built a “Motorcycle Park”. Most of us old-timers remember fondly the “Hot Harley Nights” and the Miss Harley-Davidson Spokesmodel searches held in the park, as well as many a Summer Bash! This year, Mark Wheelihan finalized over a year of planning, construction, and moving to his brand-new home, Riding High Harley-Davidson on Hwy 68 in High Point. Out with the old, in with the new! It is a state-of-the-art facility placed in the center of his customer base. the showroom is twice as large as the old location and he is able to carry twice the inventory. Amidst all the settling in and busyness involved in selling motorcycles and gear, an important date was not overlooked. The entire staff was on their toes awaiting the arrival of their unsuspecting boss. World Honda Chopper Meet At The Roost Story and photo by Alan Dockery he North Carolina mountains draw folks from all over the world. I love it when a bunch of friends come to play in our backyard. As June wound down, I joined a bunch of bikers at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC, for There are the World always newbies Honda at The Roost Chopper and meets like Meet. This this. gathering is mostly folks who ride older single overhead cam CB 750s of the type made from 1969 to 1978. Later twin cam bikes and some newer Honda choppers, bobbers and customs were welcome. The meet is an internet community getting together in the real world. Most of the folks attending are members of the internet forum at www. HondaChopper.com. Red and Kate hauled in from Oklahoma.

Travis and Elizabeth put more than a thousand miles on their old 750 that weekend to be there. The 2019 meet with be the 15th Anniversary and the 50th year since the introduction of the 750 SOHC. So, you better make your cabin reservations early. The meet started years ago when members were looking for a place to stay when the Smoke Out was in Salisbury. Riders’ Roost is a slice of biker heaven and a great place to host group events. It soon became its own event. The website administrators, known as the G.O.T.F. (Gang Of The Four, named after the four cylinder engines) sponsors the meet. And they do a good job, too, providing plenty of great food Friday and Saturday night, plus breakfast. Saturday we took a group ride to Shu Bob’s for lunch. Yeah, some took the good highway enjoying the view. I led a group over the old gap road on a more spirited ride. Some of those guys can really handle their choppers. Our mountain roads can be a little scary for folks who don’t ride them regularly. That afternoon we enjoyed checking out each other’s bikes and talking with new friends. After a great supper they held drawings, raffle, and an auction of parts and things. You know one man’s junk is the part another man needs for his next build. There was some good stuff in the raffles and auction, too, plus some Harley parts. I got skull grips for the Smoke Out racer. There were lots of cool old choppers and bikes there. Lady Doctor’s purple machine is so pretty. I really dig Biker Dave’s Geezer Glide K Model. Jason still has the longest bike at more than 10 feet. Love Gypsy’s Weeble Glide and Flynnt’s Death Machine. There are always newbies at The Roost and meets like this. Two young guys were there for their first at both. Ratty Shack posted the following a couple days later and I gotta share it

with y’all. Ratty Shack said, “I have sat for several days, trying to find the words to express what I recently experienced at the Honda Chopper meet. I was absolutely overwhelmed by the camaraderie and open arms that we were welcomed with. The group of guys that I traveled with, we showed up as absolute strangers to a group of guys who had been gathering for over 15 years together. They didn’t know us at all, despite several of us being online friends. We were greeted by their Yankee Ambassador, who exclaimed “Who da fxxxk ah yous?” After which, they began inspecting our trailer. Once it was verified that we were Chopper Heads as well, we were shown to a beautiful campsite under the trees, invited to dinner and shown nothing but love and a welcoming attitude to their family. We had one bike not running at all and it seemed like everyone at the campsite began to scramble around and help us to get it running. Lending tools, helpful tips and loads of encouragement. Even though it was against campsite rules, we got our bike to finally breathe fire well past curfew. The few days to follow where filled with laughs, tech talks, and choppers upon choppers. We were escorted through the ranks of choppers and their knowledgeable owners who welcomed us with open arms as if we were part of the family, too. It was an amazing experience, since I have always been treated as an outcast, as an outsider, for riding a Honda chopper. I have been to events up and down the East Coast where the metric bikes where the minority. This event was the polar opposite. I have never met a more genuine group of guys not concerned with make nor model, but whether you built it or bought it. There

were no leather-clad bikers with 12-inch buck knives and a bad attitude. It was shorts and flip-flops, hugs and laughs, and a wonderful time. In my small town and my travels to different bike shows, I had heard the legend of a bunch of chopper minded dudes gathering by a beautiful river tucked away in the hills of North Carolina. It seemed like a fairy tale or a bedtime story that a chopper head loves to hear. I was blessed to finally confirm the rumor that this was going on. I for one will never miss another Honda Chopper Meet. I have never felt more accepted as a weirdo and the chopper head as I felt at this event. Thank you to every guy that I met, that made me feel part of the family. Thank you to the wonderful people who prepared the amazing meals that we ate as a family whilst discussing springers and hardtails and old greasy motorcycles. Thank you to the owners of the campground, The Riders’ Roost, Dave and Pam Lucas for having such an amazing place and a welcoming environment. On behalf of the group that I traveled with, thank you to everyone who made us feel like we weren’t outcasts, like we weren’t weird, thank you for allowing us to join your family. Rolling Saints Ride For Mark And Kidney Foundation Story and photo by: Alan Dockery une sure went by quickly, but at least I was riding the last day of the month. Riding in the Rolling Saints RC 3rd Annual Run To The Roost to benefit Mark Cornette and The Kidney Foundation. The Rolling Saints are a very likeable group of all kinds of riders from Western NC. I’ve always enjoyed it every time I have gone riding with these welcoming folks. “Our club was formed to help people in our community,” said Jeff Coffey. “After three years, we had one of our brothers who got very sick with kidney disease. We decided to help him and the Kidney Foundation out this year with our poker run. We do one big Rolling Saints poker run a year for different charities. This year it was to benefit Mark. He is one of our brothers who has been around for a while. When we found out he needed a kidney transplant we wanted to help him.” The ride was a beautiful Saturday starting at Iron Thunder in Hickory, NC, and ending at Riders’ Roost in Ferguson.

The Roost is a great place to end a poker run with a covered pavilion, outdoor kitchen, and cabins to spend the night. You can take the long way home through the mountains the next day. Oh yeah, Rolling Saints member MC made goodies for

supper at The Roost. Her cookies, cakes, and brownies are always tasty. Kevin Hudler of Morganton won the best poker hand and Karen Williams from Lenoir had the worst hand. “I have polycystic kidney disease which has destroyed my kidneys,” Mark said. “I’m on dialysis three times a week. Working on getting healthier because you have to be healthy to be on the transplant list. Thanks so much to everyone who showed up. Y’all are a true blessing.” As the day wound down and I was saying goodbye to folks, I talked to Mark’s wife, Tristan, about the day. Her pretty smile faded and eyes teared up as she told me about Mark. “The point ain’t the money,” Tristan said. “We want to get Mark a kidney. Because when you have a loved one come and tell you he doesn’t know how much longer he can have a machine to keep him alive. That’s when you have to step up and do something. Because that hits you hard. There’s nothing I can do since I’m not a match and can’t donate. I feel helpless.” Tristan asked folks to see if they are a match for transplant and see if they can help someone. Jeff said this was good turnout for their third annual poker run. “We want to thank all our sponsors which ranged from pawn shops to Texas Roadhouse and trucking companies. The Imaginary War Between MC’s And Government By: David “Double D” Devereaux he National Council of Clubs (NCOC), dedicated to protecting the legal and political interests of motorcycle clubs coast-to-coast, is extremely concerned about an imaginary war between motorcycle clubs and the government, created in the minds of some law enforcement and government prosecutors, playing itself out in courthouses across America. This ideology of war has followed us to the steps of the criminal justice system, where visibly draconian security measures have been implemented based on unsubstantiated and ambiguous sources, even though there have been no validated examples of motorcycle clubs storming courthouses during a trial. A topical example reinforcing such irresponsible claims has been recently memorialized in a Texas District Attorney’s press release relating to the supposed and constant threat of violent retaliation that prosecutors face during biker trials. Despite the absurdity of the claim that any motorcycle club would storm a courthouse or target prosecutors with violence, there are no consequences for these falsehoods meant only to perpetuate fear and reinforce false narratives about 1% motorcycle clubs. And, of course, these false threats are used to justify excessive security measures during biker trials. This fear-based tactic has real implications. Inside the courtroom, juries will be biased against biker defendants because of the perception that their safety is in jeopardy. Outside the courtroom, law enforcement will increasingly treat those exercising the constitutional liberties of association and expression as a direct violent threat based on inaccurate information and training. Incidents of motorcycle profiling and selective enforcement of the law will likely continue at epidemic levels until a more accurate narrative is reported by the media, both grassroots and mainstream.

Texas – The Recent Battleground

Sharon Wilson, the Tarrant County District Attorney, issued a press release on June 28, 2018 (below) reporting that Assistant District Attorney Pamela Boggess has been named “2018 Prosecutor Of The Year” by the Texas Gang Investigators Association for the successful prosecution of Ft. Worth Bandido Howard “Drifter” Baker, convicted last year of directing a criminal organization. Without debating the merits of Drifter’s prosecution, or the sufficiency of his legal counsel, the NCOC believes that the Tarrant County District Attorney’s press release further perpetuates baseless claims only intended to sensationalize and

prejudice public perception against defendants and motorcycle clubs generally. Boggess is being recognized not only for a successful prosecution, but also for being successful under the constant threat of gang retaliation, a theatrical claim at best. The Press Release states: “Prosecutors were the target of violent threats from gang sources throughout their handling of the case, and Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn maintained an unprecedented lockdown of the courthouse, including deputies positioned on the rooftops, for the duration of the trial.”… .”These gang members rely on intimidation tactics, but they find out quickly they’ve met their match in Pam Boggess.” What gang sources? What information did these sources provide? Why has no one been arrested or prosecuted for these threats? Unfortunately, this “made for Hollywood” scenario in Ft. Worth is NOT an anomaly. Similar incidents in Waco and San Antonio courthouses involving enhanced security measures based on fictitious threats, with the same unanswered questions, have been widely publicized in the media. Imaginary Threats in Waco and San Antonio

In fact, NCOC participants were present during both trials and witnessed firsthand the ridiculous security measures employed, again based on unsubstantiated claims. In Waco, the Sheriff’s Office constructed a fence around the entire courthouse and paid hundreds of thousands for extra security at the courthouse, and for personal security for prosecutors away from the courthouse. In San Antonio, a person was required to go through two metal detectors and have their ID photographed before they could enter the courtroom and sit in designated seats. Marshals surrounded the defendants in court, even when the jury was present. The idea of using a tragic incident, whether it be a trial or a shooting, to advance a campaign of fear and draconian security, is not a new one. And it’s particularly not new in Texas. An Example Outside The Courthouse - Sgt. Swanton’s Fairytale Fiction

Years before the mistrial in the first Waco prosecution of Dallas Bandido Jake Carrizal, Sgt. Swanton of the Waco Police Department declared on national TV, as nearly 200 people were rounded-up to ultimately be arrested on generic fill-in the blank arrest warrants based solely on their associations, that they had received credible threats that bikers had “greenlit” law enforcement and were coming to Waco to retaliate.

Immediately following the incident at Twin peaks Waco law enforcement issued a statement warning “bikers to stay off the streets because it was difficult to distinguish between law-abiding riders and those bent on criminality.” The local Harley-Davidson dealership was even closed. The Federal Board of Prisons, the Texas Border Intelligence Agency, and the Texas Department of Public Safety all issued bulletins based on these reports about retaliation. But in the end, after the national spotlight had disappeared, authorities admitted that none of the threats of retaliation were found valid or true. Law enforcement quietly acknowledged, but failed to emphasize, that these reports were based on completely unsubstantiated information provided by an unnamed informant. Additionally, the alleged informant lost all credibility and believability by naming a non-existent club called the “Black Widows” as the source of the information. “The Black Widows Motorcycle Club, while it might carry a looming scary name, is actually the fictitious group from a Clint Eastwood movie “Every Which Way But Loose”. There is no actual Bike Gang called “The Black Widows” anywhere in the South or Southwest.” Furthermore, NCOC participants observed firsthand Waco PD and Texas DPS officers admitting under oath during the Carrizal trial that threats reported by Swanton in 2015 turned out to be false and unsubstantiated. But even after the Waco PD’s original story started to fall apart, most of the media that originally swallowed Swanton’s narrative without question, never doing their own investigation or fact checking, never went back to correct the record even though many were present during this testimony. After the smoke and mirrors are removed, no valid threat of violence from motorcycle clubs against law enforcement or government authorities exists. An NCOC participant from Nevada with vast trial experience, including trials with excessive security issues, confirms that authorities have zero historical basis when he writes, “We have asked judges or prosecutors to find a biker trial where they have had court issues, and they cannot.” But the headlines have already done their perceptual damage. The outlaw image is simply too easy to exploit, too easy to sensationalize, and too easily manipulated to generate real fear. Fear in the eyes of jurors, law enforcement, the general public, and even other motorcyclists. The Media’s Responsibility The NCOC believes that public officials and law enforcement should be challenged by the media when they feed reporters sensationalized rhetoric. The media should demand an answer to these questions before irresponsible and one-sided messaging is used to generate fear and hysteria that has tangibly negative impacts on motorcycle clubs and their members. The imaginary threats faced by law enforcement do not exist. But the ability to influence juries, justify draconian security on the taxpayer’s dime, and perpetuate law enforcement profiling and abuse is very real. Until that happens, grassroots media unconstrained by insti-

tutional control must continue to challenge mainstream media with balanced and investigative reporting. Reducing the use of one-sided media reports that reinforce stereotypes of danger reduces bias, and the probability of treating bikers as criminals, Media that counters stereotypes can reduce perceptions of danger. There is even evidence that “counter-stereotypic information can reduce or even eliminate bias.” (*See JOSHUA CORRELL from the University of Chicago, The influence of stereotypes on decisions to shoot, Eur. J. Soc. Psychol. 37, 1102–1117 (2007)) Balanced media that highlights the positive contributions and attributes of the motorcycling community directly impacts the general perception that all bikers are dangerous. Beyond the inherent value of truth, reducing perceptions of danger can directly reduce mistakes made by police when dealing with bikers. American Legion Post 87 Poker Run For A True Hero

By: Rose and Lloyd rchie Pilkenton, a Marine fought in Vietnam and received a purple heart for battle injuries. He has been a police officer, a fireman, and a member of the American Legion for many years, He was the bar manager overseeing everyday operations, and cooking. He also has been Commander of VFW Post 9899. About three years ago he married his love, Maria Davis. About a year ago they opened the bar called The Pits. Together, with love, they are living the dream. Unfortunately, a little before Christmas, Archie fell, breaking his neck and three bones in his back. He was taken to the VA Hospital in Salisbury, but immediately sent to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem for possible corrective surgery. After months in the ICU, he was sent to Military Rehab in Virginia. Maria has been by his side the entire time. This hero that has served his country for decades, with a heart full of love was always willing to help

anyone in need. On July 14th, Tim Gulledge and the American Legion put together a poker run to help with expenses when he comes home. There was a huge turn out to show an out pouring of love for Archie and Maria. The ride left American Legion Post 87, going to Jr’s Corner Tavern in High Point, and on to VFW Post 9899 in Archdale where they greeted the riders with pizza. The next stop was at Tipsy’s Crowbar and then back to Post 87 for a full day of fun and activities. The best hand won by Wayne Hill, was given back to the cause. Jim Fremost gave back part of the 50/50 he won. There was a raffle for a grill which was won by David Burger. He donated it back to be auctioned off. There was great food cooked by Curtis Varner. A dunking booth donated by Boggie Bounce in Archdale. They also donated a bounce house to be auctioned off. Stay Cool With Harley-Davidson Footwear By: Buzz ummer weather is here and there are awesome events going on every weekend. Having a great pair of boots is must when you are going to be on your feet all day. Harley-Davidson Footwear is upping the game by keeping you more comfortable than ever. I am currently giving a pair of HarleyDavidson Footwear “Bladen” boots a workout. Riding boots are my main footwear and I spend a lot of time on my feet at events making me very aware of how important it is to take care of my feet. I’m not into fancy footwear and am very pleased with the simple, functional Engineer styling of the Bladen. The Bladen has a tall, 9 inch shaft featuring a metal Harley-Davidson Bar & Shield logo, a buckled strap around the ankle and a YKK® locking inside zipper to make the boot easy to get on and off without a boot horn. The Goodyear welt construction rubber outsole features a 1.75 inch heel that looks cool and makes resting your feet securely on the highway pegs comfortable.

But what really makes the Bladen above all the rest is the heat resistant full grain leather upper. I thought it was a gimmick, too, until I gave them a shot. In the middle of the action taking pictures void of any shade, I am used to having a nagging feeling that my feet are roasting and I was looking forward to a remedy. I have used socks and other products that were supposed to keep the heat down with no success. The Bladen features new heat resistant leather with TFL COOL SYSTEM® technology that keeps boot temperatures up to 54 degrees cooler than standard leather when exposed to the sun’s rays over time. COOL technology reduces the surface temperature of leather by reflecting infrared rays for improved long term thermal comfort. During the heat of June and July I put these boots to the test and I can honestly say that my feet were noticeably cooler. It’s a total win.
