ou are now reading the first issue of our 22nd year of publishing The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine! We began with a 40 page magazine in August 1998 and never looked back. It has been a white knuckle roller coaster ride, but we have overcome every challenge, and by the grace of God and a lot of hard work, here we are 253 issues later!

We’ve been busy documenting the history of motorcycling in the Carolinas and July 2019 was a busy month. Just look at all the articles and event coverage in this issue. On July 13 Smokin Harley-Davidson, hosted The Bubba Blackwell Stunt Show at 12 & 3pm and STE Powersports in Statesville had their customer appreciation day. Alan Dockery’s coverage of SMOKE OUT 20 is included in this issue, too. It was held on June 14-15 at Rockingham Dragway. The 5th Annual Big Bikes 4 Purple Hearts Ride coverage is in here, too. Check out the story about our ride to see the Easy Rider movie in this issue, just to name a few.

STE Powersports Customer Appreciation Day

By: Gary Steelman n Saturday July 13th, STE Powersports in Statesville held its Customer Appreciation day. The weather was perfect for vendors and staff. The Cross Way Riders had set up an info booth manned by members and they were handing out water and promotional materials for the Christian Christian Motorcyclists Association, (CMA).

At The other end of the lineup of vendors, the bike wash was going on. The young ladies were busy most of the day scrubbing bikes and posing for pictures with attendees. Wilson’s Weenie Wagon was set up selling Wilson famous dog’s and the ice cold “refreshments” were a welcome addition to the food.

The bikes kept rolling in and out most of the day. The deals on jewelry, bike parts and the bikes at STE Powersports were as hot as the weather. Susan handed out the door prizes every other hour all day long. The tee shirts and hats were sought after door prizes as well as gas cards from local businesses.

This was just another great day at STE Powersports, come on by 1426 Northside Drive in Statesville, NC and check out the everyday deals on their bikes. Susan and Clyde invite

Being in the Big V now, the club has a good kitchen and sold half a chicken plates to raise money. Big smiles showed that everyone who bought a plate loved the chicken meal. The games and just hangin’ out and chatting with others couldn’t have been any better!

Cruising For Kids “Let Freedom Camp” By: JoAnn Wilson Photo By: Rebecca Benfield with RRJB PHOTOGRAPHY n October 2018, Freedom Cruisers Chapter 143 teamed up with Golden Corral of Lexington and the DAV Chapter 96 to put together something to raise money to send the kids of our fallen, injured, ill, disabled and wounded military heroes to camp for one week. It was then that Cruising For Kids - “Let Freedom Camp” was born and it was the goal of Freedom Cruisers Chapter 143 Golden Corral of Lexington along with the DAV Chapter 96 to make this a success.

More often then you know, the kids are forgotten about. When mom and/or dad may not make it home or when they do, they are not as they were when they left, the kids make a sacrifice as well. Camp Corral gives these kids the opportunity to go to camp for a week, be around other kids in similar situations and to just be able to be a kid with no worries and have

fun.

It began and ended at High Rock Church in Lexington. 60 bikes rolled out with some more joining in along the ride.

The actual ride to Camp Corral is 56 miles one way to Camp Hanes in King, NC. It was 90% escorted with the help of the Lexington Police department, the Forsyth Sheriff’s department, and the King Police department.

After the ride, back at High Rock Church, entertainment consisted of Carol Parish, Paul Holmes, Confuzion, The Terrible Twos and HAVOC. There were over 25 vendors, Golden Corral Food Truck, Bounce House and Dunk tank provided

by Mr. Bounce Inflatables and kid’s games, plus a stilt walker.

There were T- shirts that were pretty cool were and still are for sale for $20 Raffle items consisted of a 55 inch flat screen smart TV donated by Shoemaker’s Furniture and Appliance, a playset

by Bunce buildings, cornhole boards made by Brian Myers, a gas grill provided by Blossmon Gas Grills, girl’s and boy’s 4 wheelers provided by Motorsports on Main and more, not to mention smaller raffle baskets There was also a car show with several awards for best in show, kids’ choice etc. At the end of the day, we raised a little over $10,000! To be our first annual event and the fact that we were competing with some major rides, we are quite pleased.

Save The Boob’s Poker Run By: Johnny Reb

W

hen bikers find out about a good cause, you can bet they

will do everything in their power to help out.

June 15th Cheryl from The Ole Breeze Tavern hosted, “Save The Boobs Poker Run”, to help out Angie Astin. Angie was diagnosed with breast cancer back in November and as a single mom it has really been a tough row to hoe.

When I showed up at The Ole Breeze the place was really filling up. At the last count, we counted 150 bikes and most had passengers. The poker run hit many local watering holes including Carolina Billiards, Good Tymes Bar, Melanie’s Place, Wagon Wheel, and back to The Ole Breeze Tavern. The pig pickin started at 5 pm. To top all this off, Cheryl booked “Boogie Chillin Band”.

All the proceeds are going to Angie, to help her beat this awful disease. Now there were lots of bikers, but a lot of Angie’s friends were present also. One of her good friends drove all the way from Pittsburgh to be there for her. I didn’t know her before this, but I can tell she must be very special, because there were a lot of people there to support her. I also want to mention that since her diagnosis, she has been keeping tedious notes about her particular experiences fighting this disease.

Most people would be depressed about having this happen to them, but Angie keeps a positive attitude. All I know is with the outpouring of love, and the love of her friends,

combined with her personality, I am sure she is going to beat this. The notes that I mentioned she has been taking, is going to put this all into a self-help book on fighting breast cancer.

She is definitely a special lady.

Iron Order MC was also a co-sponsor of this event. Some of the other MCs that showed support were, Ghost Riders MC, and Southern Sin MC. All in all, the event went well, and I hope Angie made out good. We wish her all the best and our prayers go out to her and her family.

Thunder In The Smokies Summer Rally By: Mark Infield Photos By: Lori Nix une 28-30 was a perfect weekend for a bike rally in Maggie Valley, NC. The Thunder in the Smokies Rally had recently been plagued by rain, so they were about due for a pretty weekend like they had for their Summer Rally.

A lot of bikers thought it was a good weekend for a trip, too and that contributed to a great turnout. One bike was ridden 1857miles one way from Canada to attend! On Saturday morning, the first thing on the agenda was the free Pancake Breakfast Sponsored by the CMA and the guided tour ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway Upon returning from the guided tour ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway, people could peruse over 30 vendors, or enter the people’s choice bike show for free. The people’s choice bike show sponsored again by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, who ponied up $1000 in prize money. They divided it up, awarding $500 for 1st place, $300 for 2nd place, and $200 for 3rd place.

wenty years is a long time to put on a successful

motorcycle rally. Well, everything fell into place for a great 20th Anniversary Smoke Out on the third weekend of June at Rockingham Dragway, NC. I think the weather was as nice as a June weekend can be.

The Smoke Out officially kicks off Friday afternoon, but folks start the campground party Thursday. Many of us are excited when the gates open and make a quick pass through the vendors and exhibitors first thing to look for folks who are there again and growing their shops with more products and to see who you want to come back and talk to and start thinking about what you need to buy.

Next you must scope out the schedule since there are things going on all over the property and you will be busy trying to enjoy it all.

As you get your bearings and before the official greeting and the bands take the main stage, you can already hear bikes roaring down the famous Rockingham Drag Strip. Yeah, folks, for a few hours at a time the drag strip was open for us to

make passes. Old fashioned grudge racing with a pretty girl to flag the start. This year the track ran the lights and timers, too for folks who really wanted to know what their machine was running.

This being the 20th Anniversary Smoke Out meant a crowd at the T-shirt Booth. The shirts were cool, plus there were DVD’s, patches, charms, spark plug boxes and other stuff, too.

The $35 “Give me all of it in a bag.” deal was awesome.

There was always a crowd at the Smoke Out booth because after twenty years the management team is retiring and so many folks were stopping by to talk. Don’t worry, most of the bikers you’ve seen working the Smoke Out will still be at The Rock for years to come.

“Edge” has been the Smoke Out promoter giving y’all the event you have grown to love. Now it’s up to all us to ensure he is smiling when the Smoke Out celebrates anniversaries decades from now. “All I can say is that the last twenty years have been an incredible, high-speed, white knuckle ride, on a twisty mountain road at midnight,” Edge said, “I never know what to expect, but it is always interesting. I want to thank everyone, from the vendors to the people that drop hard earned cash to ride through the gate. The people who attend the Smoke Out are the people that have really built the event. It’s a collective of uber-creative people who live outside the box and happen to love motorcycles,” Edge said.

Quickly, the Smoke Out comes alive and people gather near the stage. The Captain and Maybelle Sideshow will either fascinate or totally creep you out. There were beard and mustache contests and games scheduled near the stage all afternoon.

year in a row that our friends at Deathwish Motor Culture were the official Stunt Show of the Smokeout. They had multiple shows over the weekend down at the staging lanes to the dragstrip. Crowds gathered as the DW Crew showed off with rolling burnouts, ¼ mile 12 o’clock wheelies and always finishing out with a few blown tires! Up and down the lanes the Deathwish Crew kept the crowd on edge pushing the limits with every pass.

Everyone knows that the Smokeout is known for epic burnouts. Now normally this is a nocturnal behavior that is a campground favorite. This year Zach and Kristin (two “I’s” no “e”) were determined to bring the burnout culture out in the light. They got with Edge who got two burnout contests on the official schedule, Friday at 4 and Saturday at 5pm.

Zach welded up two awesome trophies made out of spare motorcycle parts for the winners and there was $100 in cold hard cash as well. Just to make it interesting we brought a couple cases of delicious PBR and a beer bong. Burnout contestants enjoyed frosty funneled PBR’s administered by Kristin (two “I’s” no “e”). Even some of the spectators got in on the fun a schwilled some frosty PBR’s. Naturally as soon as some smoke and rubber hit the breeze a crowd gathered to cheer on the debauchery. We had a lot of help from the fine folks at Deathwish Motor Culture who fought off other monster burnouts to take home the winnings on Day 1 in the hands of “Josh Dirt” Eads. As you can imagine, Saturdays contest looked real similar to Fridays contest other than the we were forced to award two 1st place awards as two contestants took the cake. The stage was busy both days with bands, too. Derrick Stark got us grooving with a mellow start to the afternoon. The West King String Band raised the tempo. By the time Little Ozzy took the stage the crowd was ready to rock and roll. This Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath tribute band did a great job playing a bunch of songs the crowd could sing along to. Smiley worked the stage all weekend as the Smoke Out emcee. About dark, he got a whole bunch of hot ladies on stage for the Wet T-shirt Contest.

Facebook blocked my photo of Smiley and the winners flashing the cash, so you know you should have been there to see it in person. Framing the Red closed out the night with hard rock. Smiley said. “The 20th Anniversary Smoke Out was by far one of the best rallies I’ve had the pleasure to attend and also to be the event’s official emcee. I look forward to the 21st Smoke Out in 2020,”

Rockin’ The Campgrounds There is a reason they sell two separate tickets to the Smoke Out. Some folks come just for the official Smoke Out Rally.

Well, there is a whole ‘nother part of the Smoke Out – The Campgrounds. Thousands of people from all over the country fill the huge field north of the dragstrip. Y’all oughta see some of the vehicles and hootches people bring to the campgrounds.

Edge, describes it as looking like a Mad Max movie out there.

This year, “Some guys in the campground set up a huge television screen outside their RV and had gross, nasty, porn

playing,” Edge said. “Hand-built motorcycles are riding by non-stop. People riding by would just laugh and look away.

The guys showing the porn, were inside their RV watching the news when I went by. This is all happening fifty yards away from some people in a church group, which were there to help out with the event. The church group is at the Smoke Out, handing out bibles and having some serious discussions with anyone interested about God and why we exist. So, I

watch the people from this church and everyone is respectful and some people really take advantage of the opportunity to talk. Custom bikes are everywhere. People are laughing and everyone is having a great time. I ride by thinking; it will take me days to get my mind around this. ”Yep, the Smoke Out campground is a freak show of its own. Walk around and visit with the many thousands of people from all over the world camping near you.

Or just sit back chillin’ on your own trip and watch the show go by. There are more cool stories than you can imagine. Head over to the burnout pit to watch guys rev it up for the Smoke Out. If you’re allergic to bike abuse, smoky burn outs and seeing guys light cigarettes off of glowing exhaust pipes, I suggest you avoid the burn out pit .I swear this year the campground burnout pit got wore out more than ever with daytime quickie burnouts. But after dark on Saturday night the main party winds down and the smoke rises. we are done playing with our motorcycles for the day and can burn them until the tire pops if going on a trailer. Saturday, we had a minibike burnout contest again. There was a whole bunch of them in the pit. It took two days to get all the burnt rubber out of my beard. Tim had in-the-box Rupp Roadster antique model kits for prizes.

The campground stage powers up after the Smoke Out gates close at midnight. Friday the legendary D. B. Bryant rocked the campgrounds. Saturday night Red Dirt Revival brought “country” to the party.

I always laugh at the people who pull into the campgrounds and setup near the burnout pit thinking they are away from the gate and party noise over there. Ha Ha Ha, hours later they figure out they are next to the late night party.

It’s All About The Choppers The main focus of the Smoke Out is choppers. Not those cartoon choppers that you saw when they were the fad, but real choppers and funky new chopped and bobbed bikes reflecting young builders’ ideas. Cool bikes were gathered under and around the big tent for the Garage Built Ride In Bike Show. Sharp bikes were parked and cruising all over the grounds. The Smoke Out can be the best bike show of the year.

The Smoke Out ain’t quite the same as most bike rallies. There are not a lot of the same expensive new bikes that you see at most places, but real customs, built by bikers and small shops. Old ratty bikes that look like what I rode when I was young and built whatever I could afford are the norm. The

High Gear Saturday On Saturday, the Smoke Out shifts into high gear and really gets going. Lots of bikers arrive for just the day. And the vendors are ready for a crowd. There are exhibits and training classes at several of the builders’ displays where they give tips on everything from bending metal to laying on custom paint.

And there are contests for you to participate in.

Guys got a chance to show off beards, mustaches and tattoos. Early in the afternoon there was a Painted Ladies contest. Paints and brushes were provided. Bodies were the canvas. And y’all judged folks’ “artwork.” The Chili Pepper Eating contest winner had to have an iron mouth and stomach.

Oh, yeah. There were more bands playing just about all day Saturday. Dr. Bacon got us fired up in the afternoon. I really dug that band and their Appalachian Funk Rock. Small Town Titans fired the crowd up with some hard rock. After another Wet T-shirt contest, D. B. Bryant gave us a good dose

crowd, all kinds of people of all ages comes from all over the country. We are the Smoke Out Family and this is our annual reunion. However I will take a minute to discuss the future of choppers and the Smoke Out. I’ve watched choppers evolve from the late 1960’s Easyrider style bikes that me and my buddies rode, to the “Chopper Revival” of some weird cartoon-looking machines in the 1990’s Those bikes ain’t worth much now. I’m happy to see young people building cool choppers in 2019. And it’s up to y’all to ensure the Smoke Out survives another 20 years.

Minibike Races Minibike Races have been part of the Smoke Out for at least ten years, but the increase in minibikes there has some folks fussing about them. It ain’t a minibike event but in the campgrounds it might look like it. There was everything from stock antique bikes, new cheap Chinese minibikes, to Will’s four-motor monster and lots of race built minibikes they were everywhere.

There’s an explosion of minibikes these days as more folks buy and modify them. Bikers are gonna race anything and there are machines at the Smoke Out with way too much time and money in them. Tim Gelay and the Mutha Country

I’ve been told by the new management they don’t want Smoke Out fans to see any difference. So you can expect to see most of the same faces working the Smoke Out in the future. I sure look forward to next year and many to come.

Crew managed the Minibike Races. He did a great job getting more folks to participate. Friday we raced down the famous Rockingham Dragway. Some guys brought serious minibikes set up to drag race. You know guys can buy a hundred dollar Predator motor and spend a thousand bucks building it. Some were bangin’ the wheelie bars hard. Shawn Smith had the quick bike, consistently laying down fast passes, but Richard Hatcher got quicker every round and won the Minibike Drags in a close race with Shawn. Ann Marie made sure he took

that taller-than-me trophy home since she didn’t want to load it again.

To all y’all that are so fast bragging on Facebook about what’s in your minibike motor and how fast it is; bring it to The Rock and show us.

Saturday was the big Minibike Races with several classes and super hero costumes. I was back with an electric-start motor in Old Blue, my WalMartian costume and brakes that squeal more than they stop. It’s a hoot to see bikers racing cool little mini bikes and dressed up in super hero costumes. They also ran a sidecar race and drift trikes, too. Drift trikes are powered big wheel type machines that look like the back half of a go-cart with a bicycle front end. Too much fun! Y’all need to bring something to race next year.

Tim ran a Grey Beards Slow Ride which was won by Bonnie Allen, from Castle Hayne, NC. Richard Hatcher, of Wilmington, NC, was hard to beat on General Lee in the Drift Trike Race. Dawn Hood, from SC, won in the Powder Puff Class. I’ve built a racer and need a rider to beat her next year.

racing experience, or just fast and fearless, to race Blue Bird for me.

We had some new winners this year. Larry “Sparkles” Hall from Wilmington won the Minibike Main Race riding a new Coleman campground bike. Simple can be fast. Shawn Smith, of Carrolton, Kentucky, came to take the Sidecar Class trophy from frequent winners Chad and Dawn. Shawn built a serious sidecar racer then boosted his chances with the best “Monkey” there. Brent “Ratchet” Murray, of Goldsboro, NC, climbed all over that sidecar to help them take the win.

A Celebration Of Freedom, And More By: Wally Wersching owpens Battlefield held their “Celebration of Freedom” event where they had Ranger Guided Battle Field Walks; the Reading of the Declaration of Independence; Artillery Talk; Movie in the Museum; Children’s Activities; and of course, weapons firing demonstrations.

I arrived at the battlefield at about 9:00am. I walked to the reenactors’ tent and talked with a few of them. I remembered a couple of the men from last year. The park had erected tents over the spectator seats along with a rope fence to keep the spectators back. Last year it was very hot and sunny but this year it was cool and misty.

The cannon was brought to the demonstration area, and then I watched the artillery crew drilling for the upcoming firings. As the time for the demonstration approached, spectators started coming to sit on the benches under the tents. I met a couple

bikers sitting in the shade waiting for the demonstration to start. One lived across the road from the park and the other rode his Harley down from Forest City with his wife. I gave both of them a current copy of “The Carolinas’ Full Throttle” Magazine.

The reenactors came and told about what their lives would have been like during the American Revolution. One of the officers came by the tents, and shared information to the many

sitting who listened attentively. He was a good speaker, and he enjoyed telling his story. Then it was time to fire the cannon.

He had to borrow a light for his slow burning wick to fire the cannon. They didn’t have any matches. In the past, when the cannon fired, I tried to get a picture. Even though I knew exactly when the cannon would fire, I jumped, and got a blurry picture. Last year, I took a video, and got a great picture. This year, I took another video, and got another great picture. It showed all the fire coming from the cannon muzzle along with the fire going straight up from the touch hole. In real time, It happens so fast that we don’t see the fire, just the large puff of gunpowder smoke. The lady, who was standing next to me, dropped her camera when the cannon fired. I told her about taking a video. She said she’d try it the next time it fired later in the day.

Then the six SC Rangers marched in to demonstrate the firing of their flintlock weapons. One had a “Kentucky Long Rifle”, some had “Brown Bess” smooth bore weapons, and the other had another custom made smooth bore shot gun.

They fired three volleys, and because of the damp conditions, there were a lot of misfires. Flintlocks are sometimes difficult to operate. After they completed the demonstration, many of the spectators went over to read the “Declaration of Independence”. Volunteers read only a short portion at a time.

I left and headed towards Charlotte. and toward the Kings Mountain Battlefield. They were also having their ”Back Country Militia Encampment” to honor Independence Day. The ride to the park is very scenic. The tree lined road reminds me of The Blue Ridge Parkway. I arrived at the battlefield at about 10:45am, and talked with some of my friends, who are reenactors. That’s when I learned that their weapons demonstration was going to be at 11:00am. They had a good crowd at their tents asking all kinds of questions. I lucked out and had gotten there in plenty of time.

I shared a few magazines with them. Some are bikers, too.

I was glad to see the young woodworker in his tent showing the spectators all kinds of woodworking skills. He was a very talented young man. I asked if he was going to demonstrate a weapon. He said that he was too young. Next year, when he turns 16, he’ll be able to fire a weapon with the other men. It is good to see the younger generation getting involved with history.

The lady ranger came out with the red ammo box and distributed the black powder loads to the men who would be firing their weapons. Soon after that, everybody moved to the demonstration area. The man with the “Kentucky Long Rifle was the first to speak. He boasted of the benefits of having a rifle instead of the smooth bore weapons that the others had.

It took him longer to load and fire, but it was much more accurate.

When the next man boasted about his “Brown Bess’ smooth-bore, the rifle owner heckled him in a friendly manner.

They tease each because they each think their weapon was the best. The lady ranger lined them up and had them fire three volleys. The first volley was the best. All four weapons fired.

The next two volleys, only two of the weapons fired. It was very humid, and the black powder absorbed the moisture, and wouldn’t explode.

After they were done, I thanked them for coming out. They don’t get paid for it. They just like to share their knowledge with people. I took the back roads home and was home just before noon. Cindy and I went out for a nice lunch. It was a great way to spend a very patriotic Saturday morning.

Easy Rider “was a seminal counterculture film that spoke for a generation and captured the imagination and social consciousness of the late ‘60s.”

Now, exactly 50 years after it became a cultural touchstone, “Easy Rider” returned to movie theaters across the country for two days only: Sunday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 17.

Since the original release date was July 14,The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff thought it would be cool to take some of our readers to view the iconic movie on the actual 50th anniversary of the original release in 1969. We were fortunate that one of the 400+ theaters chosen to screen the re-release was located in Greensboro, NC. So, we bought some tickets and planned a ride to the Regal Greensboro Grande & RPX An ad in our July issue announcing free tickets generated a nice group of about 20 riders who shared our interest in seeing the famous “Easy Rider” film. Robert Neyland, President of Indian Motorcycle Riders Group #1935 in Concord NC and Rosemary Sanchez, Secretary/Road Guard also from Indian Motorcycle Riders Group #1935 Concord NC, Zach and Kristin Shipwash of Rebel Spirit, of Thomasville, NC, Shaggy and April from CBA/ABATE of NC, staff members, Rick and Peggy Gammons, Captain Steve, and several others rode in to be with us. And by departure time there was a group of about 20 riders who showed up on Hondas, Harleys, Victorys, and Indians.

Everyone met at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine HQ and we rode to the theater together arriving in time to get our popcorn, drinks, and find our seats before the movie started.

The film was brilliant on the big, silver screen, and the sound track, which included the Ballad Of Easy Rider (Roger McGuinn/Bob Dylan), Born To Be Wild, and The Pusher(Steppenwolf), If 6 Was 9 (Jimi Hendrix), And Don’t Bogart Me (Fraternity of man), was great!

Needless to say, everyone had a great time and in the tradition of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, it was truly our pleasure to host this event for our friends and readers, for free.

CCIB / CRKA 15th Annual Renee Ledford Memorial Party By: Wally Wersching n Friday June 7th and Saturday June 8th, the Cleveland County Independent Bikers’ Land was the place to be.

That was where the 15th Annual Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) and Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association (CRKA) Renee Ledford Memorial Party was to be held.

They planned it to be the biggest yet with all proceeds going to Cleveland Rutherford Kidney Association. Renee Ledford was responsible for bringing the Cleveland County Independent Bikers and the Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association together many years ago, so after she passed away; they started having the party in her memory.

The band, “Peace Pipe” was scheduled to play on Friday night. On Saturday morning, the poker run was scheduled with the first bike out at 10:00am. The stops were at East Coast Cycles in Forest City, the VFW Post 4066 in Shelby, the Windjammers Clubhouse in Shelby, the Cleveland County Independent Biker’s clubhouse in Shelby, and finally back at the CCIB Land in Mooresboro, NC. Later in the afternoon when all the bikes were back from the Poker Run, other fun events were scheduled. Saturday night, the band “Generation Axe” was scheduled to perform on stage.

Everybody was looking forward to this weekend. It was going to be a great party! That’s what was supposed to happen, but “Mother Nature” didn’t cooperate. Heavy rain was forecast for the whole weekend: Friday thru Monday. When I awoke Saturday morning, it wasn’t raining, so I quickly looked at the weather radar to see when the rain was supposed to be here.

The radar showed rain was all around us, but it looked like maybe it would hold off until the afternoon. It would be close!

I arrived at the CCIB Land at a little after 9:00am. After dropping off a stack of “The Carolinas’ Full Throttle” magazines, and talking with a few of the club members, they told me that the band “Peace Pipe” really rocked the stage the night before. They said that It rained a little bit, but not enough to dampen the spirits of the band or the audience.

As I walked around “The Land”, I was impressed by the level of accomplishment I saw. They had built a small town on their land. Now, there were not only camper trailers and tents but small cabins that they had built on-site, too. The stage was built so that a band could play in almost any kind of weather.

It was obvious that they had planned ahead. I could also see where they were having fun the night before sliding down a large plastic tarp like the old “Slip n’ Slide”, but on a much bigger scale.

As it got closer to 10:00am, there were only two bikes for the poker run and they were club members. It looked like everybody else was staying home – out of the rain.

Many of the club members were congregating around the small registration building – trying to make a decision about the poker run. After two more club members rode in, they decided to cancel the run. Two of the members rode to the planned stops to tell everybody that the run was canceled, and to send anybody to “The Land” for the evening entertainment.

I didn’t plan on returning for the evening festivities, but I’m sure that they all had a great time – rain or shine. Check out “The Carolinas’ Full Throttle” Magazine” Cruisin’ Calendar or the CCIB Facebook page for future events. They are all a lot of fun!

15th Anniversary World Honda Chopper Meet

Story and Photo by Alan Dockery he North Carolina mountains draw folks from all over the world to come ride and play in our backyard. On the last weekend of June, I joined a bunch of bikers, for the World Honda Chopper Meet at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort, in Ferguson, NC.

I’ve attended this gathering for years, riding my favorite old Honda. The meet is mostly folks who ride older, single overhead cam CB 750s of the type made from 1969 to 1978. So, this was also the 50th anniversary of the famous CB 750 that changed the motorcycle world. Later model twin cam bikes and some newer Honda choppers, bobbers and customs were welcome.

real world. Most of the folks attending are members of the internet forum at www.hondachopper.com so they are known by their online names. Folks came from all over for the World Honda Chopper Meet. Red hauled in from Oklahoma. Slick and Oily came from Iowa. PRW1 brought a cool machine from Wisconsin. Dicki II and Diana live in Sacramento, Cali.

And that Stinkin’ Hippie came all the way from England.

These bikes ain’t just for sitting around looking cool. Those folks like to ride and most of them don’t have roads like we enjoy. Saturday, we took a group ride to Shu Bob’s for lunch.

Yeah, some took the good highway enjoying the view. I led a group over the old gap road on a more spirited ride. Some of those guys can really handle their choppers since our mountain roads can be a little scary for folks who don’t ride them regularly. And there are always a couple riders who did not intend to get in my group. They got an advanced riding lesson and maybe an extra pucker in the seat leather.

Once everyone was back from lunch and the ice cream run, we gathered for a group photo and bike show. The Stinkin’ Hippie and I were judges. Man, there were some cool machines by the creek that day.

Bike show winners were: Best Trailer – Trogg. Stock Bike – Lady Doc. Bagger – Biker Dave. Café – Bull. Digger – Jerry and Bobber – Turbo. Tyler from The Ratty Shack had the coolest Rat Bike. Jason brings the longest bike and Best Chopper. Jeff’s CB 750 had the Best Paint set off by beautiful chrome. Walt had the best Overall Chopper and Jerry’s bike was the Peoples’ Choice.

That afternoon we enjoyed checking out each other’s bikes and talking with new friends. After a great supper they held drawings, a raffle and an auction of parts and things. You know; one man’s junk is the part another man needs for his next build. There was some good stuff in the raffles and auction, too. Plus some Harley parts.

Being the 15th Anniversary, I asked Chuck DV for some history and comments.

He also said, “Fifteen years ago we attended the Smoke Out and someone mentioned this little motorcycle campground in Ferguson, NC. We migrated over to the Riders’ Roost and

we’ve been going there ever since. It’s now our home away from home. The campground itself is beautiful with the creek running alongside the site. It’s a nice spot to cool off after a long day of riding. We love riding the roads around Ferguson.

Many of us are not used to twisties and riding the roads around Ferguson is amazing.”

“We used to have a midnight auction for everyone to buy and sell bike parts. Now the auction is started after dinner by the Gang Of The Four members and it helps support the Hondachopper.com website. This year a portion of the auction proceeds went to a member having a health crisis. This is what we do, we try to help our brothers and sisters when we can.”

“We can’t say enough about Dave and Pam Lucas, the own-

ers at the Riders’ Roost. They pretty much let us take over the campground. They are so accommodating. They’ve even opened their garage to let us fix a bike or two or three.”

“This year we celebrated 50 years of the CB750 and 15 years of our stay at the Rider’s Roost. Over 50 members from all over the country and even a member from England, came to celebrate the CB750 and those who customize these bikes.

Everyone comes to talk about bikes. It doesn’t have to be a CB750, but there’s lots of talk about bikes, chopping them, building them and riding them. You get the picture. We had a bike show Saturday evening before dinner. What a creative group we are.”

“All the GOTF staff from Hondachopper.com manage the event. Hondachopper.com provides meals for those in attendance Friday evening, Saturday morning and Saturday night.

GOTF member, Rake, and my wife, Melanie do most of the cooking with some help from members. All the food is homemade . Friday night was brats and hotdogs with baked beans and Rita’s Water Ice brought in from Philly. Saturday night was baked ziti, with homemade sauce, meatballs and sausage.

Dessert was Rita’s Water Ice again and homemade cheesecake from my wife’s secret family recipe.”

“Every year we have the World Honda Chopper Meet, the Honda Chopper family grows. We have a great time gathering at “the Roost”. We have no desire to go anywhere else. Some of the same people have been going year after year, and for some people it’s their first time. We treat everyone like family.”

You do really meet the nicest people on a Honda,” Chuck concluded.

Riding High Earns Harley-Davidson Service Award 10 Months In A Row

High Harley-Davidson’s service department has been customer rated #1 in the country for the last 10 months, which is pretty impressive. The rating comes from customers that take the Harley-Davidson CXI survey and provide feedback about their dealership service experience.

Service Manager Chris O’Connell likened it to people who come in and have to pay for service and then leave good reviews have a higher potential to leave negative remarks rather than the people who come in to buy motorcycles that are more prone to be excited and in a good mood. Either way, the service department at Riding High Harley-Davidson is apparently sending hundreds of satisfied customers out the door.

As far as individuals go, there are no specific awards, but iding

I started dating Zach in 2012. I had always wanted to ride but never made the time to learn nor did I have any close friends I trusted enough to ride with before we met. I decided to take the class at DCCC in 2012. Zach’s dad, Tommy, was a huge influence in my riding. Once I got my endorsement, he made sure almost every time he went to ride, we were riding with him. Fast forward to 2016, to one of the biggest heart ripping life changing events for me and definitely Zach, we lost Tommy to brain cancer. He was the most intelligent, most started riding motorcycles as a passenger regularly when

helpful, most encouraging person. Zach had learned so much from Tommy so I knew in my heart he was capable of restoring the motorcycles Tommy left him, but I had no clue what he was really capable of until we acquired the shadow later in 2016. Zach had an old 2wd 2door Chevy pick up he was using for a work daily driver and had listed for sale, well wheeling and dealing he traded for a stock 96 Honda Shadow with a couple dents in the tank, and wouldn’t even start. Zach wanted it anyway, brought it home and within minutes had it fired up riding around our circle drive way. I wanted to ride to the

beach and I bought a huge canvas sea bag for my travels and needed something to keep it from falling off. He came through with the sissy bar meeting my exact needs and that was the beginning of TRS (The Rebel Spirit). We decided to start something, a journey based of off Tommy and his passion he that had also filled in us. The Shadow was our first full fledged project to show off what we might be capable of. It took a couple years to get it “complete” and we still think of cool new things to do to it constantly. I love how it came out and am proud to represent the talent that can come from roots like Zach’s. We started in a covered carport in our driveway, and still aren’t anything fancy.

There will be more projects to come but the Shadow Bobber will always be my first ever project bike I had a hand in, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

PGR Mission for Alfred ’Al’ Young

By: Wally Wersching l Young was a Navy veteran along with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was 81 years old when he passed away on June 20, 2019. I received an email inviting me to stand for him on June 24th at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hickory, NC. The “Patriot Guard Riders” (PGR) is an organization founded in 2005 that honors these heroes when they die. We are there to show that this country still remembers even after many years.

The main mission of The “Patriot Guard Riders” is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives: 1, to show sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities. 2, to shield the mourning family and their friends from interrup-

tions by any protestor or group of protestors. (This is accomplished through strictly legal and non-violent means.)

I initially learned about the PGR when I rode escort for “The Wall That Heals” replica of the Vietnam War Memorial.

They seemed like a good group of bikers, so I looked into it, and joined on-line in 2010. Since that time, I have been receiving many emails about missions for fallen heroes throughout North and South Carolina along with some in Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia. I’m retired so I participate in as many as I can.

I checked the time to be at the church, and I wouldn’t be able to make it, so I decided to go straight to the Catawba Memorial Park, in Hickory, for the burial service with military honors.

I left home at about 12:30 and after getting stuck in traffic for a few minutes, I turned into the Catawba Memorial Park.

The Park is a very large cemetery, and I rode around for a few minutes until I saw a Navy man in uniform. I followed him to the grave site. He was one of the US Navy Honor Guard assigned for Al’s funeral. After we parked, I talked with him for a while. He’s a Reservist based out of Charlotte.

I walked back to the grave site and watched as the rest of Al’s honor guard pulled up and parked. I sat under a tree on a short wall. It was very comfortable. Soon many of the Caldwell County Honor Guard were there enjoying the shade, too. They are all veterans, so we started talking about life in the military – “War Stories”. A couple of the men were Navy vets so we had something in common.

The man who was sitting next to me was an Army vet. As we talked, I learned his name was John, and he was originally from Chicago, too, and we went to the same high school as well. I was a couple years ahead of him, but we had fun talking about the principal, and some of the teachers we both had.

He now lives in Lenoir, and I hope that we can get together some time. It’s a small world!

After a while of hearing motorcycles – mostly riding on Rt 70, the hearse followed by the PGR rolled in. There were also many family members who drove, and parked where they could. Even the largest cemetery, doesn’t have adequate park-

ing for a funeral.

Al had a large Honor Guard: three US Navy in their dress white uniforms, the Caldwell Honor Guard, four Coast Guard men in their blue uniforms, and the Patriot Guard Riders. He must have been a dedicated American. I’ve been to funerals where there were only a couple Patriot Guard Riders and no Honor Guard. Every veteran should have a funeral with full military honors. They’ve earned it.

Al had everything, the US Navy folded the flag, and the Caldwell County Honor Guard fired the three volleys and played taps. I saw one of them pick up his expended brass and give it to the Navy to place in the folded flag for the family.

The Coast Guard were there but I couldn’t see exactly what they did except comfort the family.

The 3-volley salute is a ceremonial act performed at military funerals as part of the drill and ceremony of the Honor Guard.

It consists of a rifle party firing blank cartridges into the air three times. It could be any number of riflemen. I have been to funerals where there was only a single rifleman firing the three volleys. The custom originates from the European dynastic wars, where the fighting ceased so the dead and wounded could be removed. Then, three shots were fired into the air to signal that the battle could resume.

After the service was over, we walked to the truck to place the flags in the carrier. We talked for a short while. Most of the bikers wanted to leave. It had gotten very hot. The temps were in the mid 90’s. I looked around and was blocked in by all the

family’s cars. It was a complete gridlock. I walked around and found that I might be able to ride between the rows of cars to get out. I was very careful not to hit the car’s mirrors as I went by.

I headed home. It was good to feel the air rushing by again.

It was hot! When I got home, I drank a full quart of ice water to cool down. I was glad to be there for Al and his family. I’m looking forward to my next PGR invitation.

Hickory Riding Club Celebrates 40 Years Of Friendship

Steve’s garage became the Hickory Riding Club 40 years ago.

Over the years, I’ve enjoyed hanging with these folks on their rides and at the clubhouse. The last Saturday in June, a whole bunch of Hickory, NC, bikers gathered at the cool little clubhouse in the woods for the 40th Anniversary Party.

The first thing I noticed was the smell of a pig over coals.

Jack was doing a great job smoking that pretty little pig that Junior raised.

As folks rode in, the food was getting spread out. Talk about pulled pork, well Jack left the pig on the grill and you could pull meat from your favorite part, tenderloin to hams.

Five of the founding members; Neal Evans, Dean Clark, Bub Lefevers, Steve Julian and Charley Huffman were at the anniversary party.

“Back in the early seventies we were just a bunch of guys meeting up on the weekends who were riding and having fun,” Charley said. “We decided to start a small club, nothing real formal.” hat started as some guys meeting in

Joe Julian brought one of his Dad’s old motorcycles, a real nice 1970’s Shovelhead Lowrider. It was a bike Steve was riding when they started the club. Yep, Steve had to jump on that bike and ride off for a while.

Rick “Gonzo” Hubert is the current Hickory Riding Club President and said,” When the founding members eventually decided to make it a riding club, they started having regular meetings and such. The first meetings were in Steve Julian’s garage. They formed a tight knit group and worked well together.”

“The first club house was the Haunted House on Springs road,” Gonzo said. “If folks spent the night there, they slept with a pistol on their chest. As if ghost can be shot.”

“We keep the number of members low,” Gonzo said.

“When a club gets too big you get the cliques of separate small groups and in-fighting. We’d like to keep this a friendly, close-knit club.”

many of us got to know the club through their Annual Bronson Run. It is the Hickory Riding Club’s big event each year Their clubhouse is the cool old fashioned biker movie type, in the woods at the end of a dead end road. There is plenty of room for folks to camp for weekend parties, do bike games and have fun.

After we all pigged out and were ready to chill in the shade for a while, the band ‘Doesn’t Madder” took the stage and rocked the clubhouse. Smitty rocked the woods a few times with his Civil War replica cannon and mortar that he was letting folks fire.

Thanks to the Hickory Riding Club for good times and good rides. I wish them the best of luck and hope they are still riding forty years from now.

Children’s Advocacy Center Poker Run By: Billy Dagenhart

A

fter several months of planning,

the date for the 2019 Children’s Advocacy Poker Run had arrived. The weather was hot, but great and everything was coming together. Twisted Covenant MSC had done their homework and excitement was in the air just waiting to see how many riders would show up.

Then they started coming, and kept showing up to the count of 155 and we couldn’t have been happier. All were demonstrating care and compassion for these young children of abuse who need our help. Camp Dragonfly is just the place to help in their goals to gain confidence and self-esteem, and with all of the support from area bikers, it’s truly a great start.

Starting out at Blue Ridge HD with stops at CAPC, Pop’s, Sasha’s, Sports Page, and finally ending at Clutches. It was packed, Shell’s BBQ and Hwy 55 fed the crowd, live music from Dani Kerr, and Hillbilly running the DJ outside provided a festive atmosphere. Vendors kept everyone in the buying

mood with all the great goods. BACA Foothills Chapter and CMA Statesville were just a few vendors who showed up to support with booths. Market Basket, Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group, Project Lifesaver, and Great Clips were there with booths as well, making it a tremendous outpouring of support.

Area clubs including Maniax RC, Blue Knights LE, Guardians of the Children Mooresville Chapter, Red Knights, Twisted Brotherhood RC, AWOL MC, Catawba Valley HOG, Combat Vets, Sentinels of Hope, and US Veterans MC all took part in the ride. With all the other donations and vendors, the list is nearly at 100 and we can’t list them all, but your time and contributions are very much appreciated.

The day was winding down, everyone was hot and probably ready to call it a day and get somewhere cool. It was time to announce winners: Best Hand: Tony Huffman, Worst Hand: Michael Blackburn, 50/50: Bobbie Sigmon and all three donated back their winnings. Mike Clinton and Daniel Turner won the gun raffles. Congratulations to all the winners! But the true winners in all of this are the children at CAPC. Again, we want to thank everyone for making this a huge success, BRHD (Bre & Seth), Clutches (Melissa & staff), our stops, Shells BBQ (Bee & Lisa), Hwy 55 (Jay & Kim), and those not listed. And last but not least, all the members and support team of Twisted Covenant MSC who gave their time and energy and kept pushing forward and making it a reality.

When the numbers were totaled and everything counted, TC and the caring biker community was able to present a check to CAPC in the amount of $8538.00! This well exceeded our expectations, and all we can say is Thank You!

A Cop On Your Tail The BikeSafe NC Program By: Edward Cleary

I

Corporal Tyler Chelenza, of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office over at Raging Bull Harley-Davidson. Our conversation quickly turned to the fact that Cpl. Chelenza was now an instructor for the BikeSafe NC program. He suggested that I come out and take the one day course. I told him that I had already been through it with the NC State Troopers, but he insisted I should do it again because I might pick up something new. While each class follows a set curriculum, he said, different instructors and classroom participants steer the conversation, so new ideas and thoughts come up in each class. I took his advice and registered for the course and I’m sure glad I did. It turned out to very informative and fun way to spend a Saturday.

One of my riding buddies, Bret, enrolled in the class with me. We met up early on that Saturday morning and rode up to the Orange County Sheriff’s office in Hillsboro.

We got there about 8:00 am and were greeted in the parking lot by about 10 other riders and whole bunch of motorcycle cops from different departments from around the state. recently ran into

We spent the first hour in the classroom just talking safety; everything from the clothes we wear to lane positioning and curve management. Then it got a little more intense as videos, mostly captured from Go-Pro style cams, were introduced into the conversation. Some of them were a little disturbing as they were shot from the rider’s point of view and you can see what the rider saw, or in some cases, the last things they ever saw!

Lots of discussion arose about what each could have done differently.

With this fresh on our minds, we went out for the first of two rides. We were divided into groups of three-two students and an officer. Bret and I were paired up with Trooper Blake Fisher from the NC Highway Patrol. Trooper Fisher is stationed on the west motor team in Charlotte. With Corporal Chelenza leading the ride, we departed the parking lot in our groups of three, with about 30 seconds separating each group.

We rode through Hillsboro and then into the country side.

Each group rode in standard staggered formation with the cop in each group bringing up the rear. After a nice 45 minute ride, we went back to the station where a hot dog and chili lunch was waiting for us. During lunch each group got together for their critique. Trooper Fisher was impressed with our overall riding skills, however he did gig me on hugging the center line a little too tight while taking left hand curves. He was right, too. Had an oncoming vehicle over shot the turn and crossed the centerline I would have been in trouble.

After lunch the class as a whole got together again to discuss in general what we’d learned about ourselves, then it was back out for another ride where we all tried to implement the lessons that we had learned. What a great ride it was, too.

Altogether we spent about 2 ½ hours riding, not a bad way to spend a Saturday!

The BikeSafe NC program is modeled after the worldfamous BikeSafe London program, created and taught by the Metropolitan Police Department of London. This program started in the United Kingdom and currently has 41 departments teaching it in their country. London has the best results sporting a 25% reduction in motorcycle fatalities since the program began.

The NC Highway Patrol recognized an increase in motorcycle fatalities and researched multiple programs designed to minimize crashes and fatalities. A pilot program was held from 2007-2008 in Wake County, NC. As a result, a reduction of motorcycle fatalities was found in Wake County but was not found in other areas of the state.

The BikeSafe program was brought to the attention of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and later to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The NC Highway Patrol received a letter of commendation from the FHWA for its efforts in leading the charge in reducing motorcycle crashes and fatalities with this program.

In 2009, the program was expanded, and NC saw the first statewide reduction in motorcycle fatalities in 5 years. This was the combined result of BikeSafe-NC, other educational programs, a change in NC helmet law, and increased enforcement efforts aimed at protecting motorcyclists.

Bikesafe-NC would not be possible without the support of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program. Bikesafe is in the process of rolling out nationwide. NC is proud to be associated

with this effort to protect motorcyclists everywhere.

Big Bikes For Purple Hearts Ride

By: Lincoln Photos By: Lincoln & Badass Biker Sue few months prior to the ride, I ran into Big Bikes for Purple Hearts Ride event coordinator Jack Waters at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. Jack invited me to the event and modestly told me, “They usually had a good crowd.” I’m always down for an event that benefits our veterans, so I penciled it into the events I hoped to make it to. As the date came nearer It became apparent that I was gonna be able to make the event, and boy, was I glad that I did!

The event originated at the American Legion Post 55 in

Winston-Salem. It was a quiet ride to the Post, I thought I’d see some more bikes on the road, but, apparently, they had already arrived at Post 55. When I arrived, the lot was already half full. I found Jack inside and he introduced me to General J.R. Gorham, who was on hand to give us a pre-ride pep talk,

and boy, did he ever! but I’ll get back to that. The post was buzzing with folks buying raffle tickets, grabbing a bite to eat, or just hangin out. Jack called for some attention on the microphone and had a couple bottles of Purple Heart Wine that he auctioned off before the ride, which brought a pretty penny. He also gave a bottle to the General who was about to give us the talk that I mentioned previously. With mic in hand, decorated uniform on, the General started in on a speech with all the command and delivery that you would expect from a General, thanking us for our support of the Purple Heart Veterans, and talking a little about his upbringing which he recently chronicled in his book “Sharecropper’s Wisdom.” He ended by thanking us for letting him speak to us. It was our pleasure, for sure! There were some young ladies on hand that sang one of the most beautiful renditions of the Star Spangled Banner that I have ever heard. Man, it brought a tear to the eye

and stood the hair up on my arms. Well done! We all moseyed over to our bikes but were instructed not to crank them up quite yet. As tradition at the Big Bikes for Purple Hearts Ride, the riders start their bikes up in unison on a given que. This year, the General had the honor of giving us the ole NASCAR start up. With the phrase of “Gentleman, Start Your Engines” all 200+ bikes hit the switch and roared to life, filling the air with the rumble we all love.

The ride was completely LEO escorted and we took a nice long ride without having to put our feet down once. I was lucky enough to ride beside Tyler Styles of the McGrath Law Firm, “The Firm That Rides”. The McGrath Law Firm was one of the ride sponsors along with Smokin’ Harley-Davidson, Clemmons Motorcycles, The Top Leaf Cigar Lounge, Atlas Firearms, American Legion Post 55, Mantle Realty, radio station WTOB, and the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.

The ride ended at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson and we were greeted by photographers, vendors, live music and a table full of food! We all grabbed a bite to eat and then Jack began raffling off items. A whole lot of nice patriotic prizes were handed out, one being an AR-15 and on to some beautiful wooden American Flags, cigar boxes and artwork.

It was a great day, a great ride, and a great cause, Jack and all those involved deserve kudos for a Good job. Make sure you look this event up in the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar next year. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it.

2019 Confederate Memorial Day Service

By: Wally Wersching n Saturday, June 29th, Shelby, NC held their 2019 Confederate Memorial Day Service on the Lafayette Street side of the city square next to the Cleveland County Confederate statue. There was an advertisement in the local paper, and I wanted to go to honor the Confederate veterans. After all, they were Americans, too. It was sponsored by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Cleveland Regiments, Camp 1663. It was scheduled for 11:00am, so I parked “Miss Vickie” on the square at about 10:30am. I always like to be early so I can talk to people before the event, because after the event is over, people usually like to get on home.

I met one man in the crowd, that I had heard about for years.

Over the last 15 years, Ned Cash has researched people who served in the Civil War from Cleveland County and works to restore old cemeteries. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years. Then he started researching his family’s military history and doing living history reenactments at locations such as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. So far, he has located the final resting

place of 2,500 Cleveland County men and women who served in the Civil War. There are nearly 300 cemeteries in Cleveland County. He uses a 1938 survey that was done of the cemeteries in the county as a basic guide, but has found some that weren’t included in the survey. Part of his research is looking in the cemeteries for white government burial markers. Confederate markers have a pointed stone so that the Yankees could not sit on them.

We talked for quite a while as we watched everybody getting ready for the service. Ned is really dedicated to finding every grave in the county. I was surprised to hear that he wasn’t a speaker at the service. I would have liked to hear his presentation.

All during the preview to the service, Sharon Lawrence played her violin. She played many old southern melodies very well. It was relaxing, and fitting for the nature of the service.

I watched as a few motorcycles parked in spots that were blocked off for them. Some of the men were wearing leather vests with the patch of the “Sons of Confederate Veterans, Cleveland Regiments, Camp 1663” on the back.

At 11:00am, Steve Brown, the Camp Adjutant began talking. He recognized all the officers, local officials, and special guests. Then the Burke Tigers Color Guard posted the colors.

They were all dressed in proper Confederate army gear. The invocation was given by Michael Ledbetter, the Camp Chaplain.

Steve Brown again came to the microphone to introduce the keynote speaker – Teresa Roane. Her credentials are almost endless. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1988 with a BA in History; was the Director of Archives and Photographic Services, at Valentine Richmond History Center, from May of 1989 to July of 2004.Then she was the Library Manager at the Museum of the Confederacy, from 2006 to September of 2011; and then the Archivist at The

Museum of the Confederacy, until February of 2014. Finally, she’s the Archivist for United Daughters of the Confederacy, from February 2014 to Present. She knows a lot about the War Between the States.

I was surprised to see that she was African-American. Her talk was about all the support roles women played during the war and how women did all the men’s work back home while their men were away fighting the war. She also mentioned all the Native-Americans, Spanish-Americans, and AfricanAmericans who were in the Confederate military. She was a very good speaker and held our attention throughout her complete presentation.

Then it was time to lay the Memorial Wreath at the statue.

Teresa Roane and Sharon Lawrence did the honors. After the wreath was in place, the Burke Tigers Color Guard fired the

three volleys with taps played over the PA system The closing remarks were said by Steve Brown, and the Colors were retired by the Burke Tigers Color Guard. The Camp Chaplain said the benediction, and the service ended with everybody singing “Dixie’. The words were on the back of the program. It was a moving experience. I was glad that I went to honor fellow veterans. I look forward the next year’s ceremony with the hopes that even more people attend.

People are the same today, they want to live life on their own terms and choose the very things God has warned them that are no good for them and then when their lives turns into a disaster, they blame God. People ruin their own lives by foolishness and then they are angry at God. Proverbs 19: 3. “The foolishness of a man or woman twist his way and his heart frets against the Lord.”

Here is a story out of the book of Ruth. When times got rough for Naomi, her husband and family, they choose to leave the Promised Land and went to Moah. The people of Moah were the ones who had refused to help the Israelites (Gods People). Naomi lost her husband and sons because they went against God’s Word.

When life fell apart for Naomi, she blamed God. Ruth 1: 13 “The hand of the Lord has gone out against me”.

Remember God is never the one who leaves us.

Carolina Faith Riders Sonic Bike Night By: Wally Wersching he Carolina Faith Riders sponsor a Bike Nite at the Forest City, NC Sonic drive-in starting at 6:30pm every Tuesday evening all summer. I went to one on Tuesday, June 11th, and had a very pleasant time. The people there are very friendly, and the food is pretty good, too.

I left home about 4:30pm. It was a beautiful afternoon for a ride with sunny blue skies with temperatures in the lower 70’s. After passing through Chesnee, I stopped at Strawberry Hill USA produce stand to buy a couple cantaloupes for Cindy. They have the sweetest cantaloupes in the area.

After loading the two cantaloupes into my pack, I backtracked turned left, and headed north. After a few miles, and a couple stoplights, I turned into the Sonic parking lot. I looked around as I pulled in, and saw one bike already parked. It was just about 6:00pm when I arrived. I talked with “Shadow” and his 5 year old daughter for a while, and then more people rode in.

The next group who rode in was from the “Lordz of Thunder”. I’ve known the President for a long time. He rides a Victory Kingpin, too. It’s always good to see him. He’s had some

serious health issues.

I gave out a few of The Carolinas’ “Full Throttle” magazines. More bikes pulled in, and before I knew it the parking lot and the tables were full. One young man rode in on a Chinese 50cc Qingq1 SR450 moped style scooter with a plastic milk crate on the back to carry his stuff. His father rode in with him on his Harley. All vehicles are welcome at the CFR Bike Nites.

I met a few friends from previous bike nights. We had a very pleasant talk about a little of everything but mostly motorcycles, and places to ride. I enjoy watching the bikes pull in, and then I like to go talk to the rider about his bike – especially if the bike is unusual. One man rode in with his wife on a Harley FXR. It used to be an FXRP Police bike, but he took off all the lights and saddlebags. He says that it is still a very smooth ride. I had one for 15 years, and it ran great.

It was very interesting talking with him, but I wanted to get home in time to walk the dog, so I left for home about 6:30pm.

The ride home was refreshingly cool. It was a great way to spend an evening with friends. I will do it again soon.

8th Annual Seth Nall Memorial Scholarship Ride

he weather has really wreaked havoc

on events this year. Nobody likes riding in the rain, but honestly, it’s just part of motorcycling, it’s gonna happen sooner or later. The forecast for June 8th was sketchy and accurately full of rain and wind for the 8th Annual Seth Nall Memorial Scholarship Ride.

Normally this would doom a ride, but not this time!

Loyal friends and fans of the ride still came out in less than favorable conditions to support Tim Nall as he continues to keep his son Seth Nall’s memorial scholarship going. This is the 8th Annual event that funds scholarships for graduating Seniors from Trinity High School to assist them in reaching their college goals. Although the event suffered from the bad weather, Tim announced the Scholarships Endowment Fund account has reached the point that it earns $2000 a year. This means that no matter what happens to the ride, the minimum amount of money necessary to perpetually fund the scholarship will be there. Seth’s name and scholarship will go on indefinitely!

Riders in the Country is the usual ending place for the Seth Nall Memorial Scholarship Ride and as usual Tim had a huge spread of food with hamburgers and hotdogs with all the fixin’s, chips, cookies and drinks. It sure was good. you know what else is good? Yours Truly pulled three aces out of five cards for the poker hand. It was a natural for the best hand which I happily donated back to the cause, the 50/50 winner

also did the right thing and donated back his winnings.

Even with a bad forecast and less than favorable weather, the Seth Nall Memorial Scholarship Ride went on and was a success. Make sure you keep an eye on the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine’s Crusin’ Calendar for next year’s event.

Hopefully the sun will be out and this event can pull its regular crowd. Until then, we love you, Tim and we miss you, Seth.

Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson July Was Hot! By: Chi

here’s always a party at

Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson. The month of July was a hot one and Fort Bragg HarleyDavidson just made it hotter! They truly support their local riders and are great patriots to our country and soldiers.

The month of July started with a wonderful celebration of Independence Day. The party began with free food and beer. The Buffalo Soldiers cooked up the food as everyone

enjoyed Tim Cifer’s Music.

They also celebrated Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson’s birthday on July 6th. They had an awesome 5th anniversary party!

Raffles were consecutive on the hour and during the downtime everyone was welcome to eat and drink. The menu was fajitas and margaritas at the Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson bar. And, there was a live performance, by the Quilted Sky Band.

They also celebrated with their Swap Meet, Bikini Bike Wash, and the Christmas in July Toy Run. The swap meet was in full effect with everyone interested in their favorite bikes

ubba was scheduled to bring his stunt show to

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson earlier in the year, but like so many other events this spring, it got washed out. The good news is that the event was rescheduled for Saturday, July 13th, a day that I had open on my schedule! This time the sun was out and it was HOT! Bubba was scheduled for 2 performances, a noon warm up show and a 3pm show.

Bubba’s show is much more that a stunt show, it’s a performance. He came out of his trailer in his red white and blue leather suit and greeted the crowd via the microphone in his helmet. Then he selected 1 of the 6 bikes he brought with him and took off up and down the parking lot doing wheelies, stoppies, and burnouts all while talking to the crowd. He did a little bit of work on each bike including a Buell, a Dyna, a V-Rod, and a full Dresser.

While swapping bikes out Bubba made mention that he has broken every single record that Evel Knievel set and did it on the same type bike! Bubba also mentioned that he had broken

over 40 bones during his career!

As I mentioned his noon show was just a warmup show and he put out a little teaser that he was going to do a jump at 3pm. The control he showed was amazing! In between shows, Bubba came out and signed posters, talked to the crowd and posed for pictures with his fans. He took time to talk and be personal with everyone in line. Bubba is extremely down to

earth and easy to talk to. He told me that doing burnouts and wheelies is ok, but he loved to do jumps, and that’s what he really enjoyed t doing.

Bubba was back at it at 3pm with pure showmanship! Working the crowd up and down the line. He pulled off more stunts and then pulled out a jump ramp Now, when I say a jump ramp, it was no big production. This ramp looked like something that we made to jump our bicycles back in the day. Well, maybe a little better constructed then those childhood ramps, but you get the picture. He got five volunteers out of the crowd to lie down on a mat as he prepared to jump over them! The

crowd gave out a collective sigh and cheers as he cleared the five volunteers! WOW! Rebecca Crider was one of the 5 volunteers and said she was “Absolutely exhilarated” as the bike flew over and added that she “didn’t think he was actually going to jump us!”

July 13th, The New Korner Pub in Mooresville sponsored a Bike Run/Poker Run to benefit Richard’s Warriors, a great foundation in the area to raise funds for their efforts supporting teens and young adults in the hospital while fighting cancer.

Just a few months after Ricky passed away Richard’s Warriors foundation was created by his mom Kimberly. Along with his step-dad, dad, siblings and countless family members and friends our wish is to keep Ricky’s name, heart, and spirit alive by bringing a smile to the face of other teens and young adults in a way that Ricky always could.

Southern Riders Motorcycle Club, RobCo Chapter, 8th Anniversary Celebration By: Chi n Saturday July 13, 2019, the Robeson County chapter of Southern Riders celebrated their 8th anniversary with a party. The Southern Riders embrace brotherhood and community. This celebration was definitely a celebration of both.

As everyone knows the area suffered from hurricane and other disasterrelated destruction. There was so much flooding in Robeson as well as the surrounding areas. The RobCo chapter of SRMC took it’s normal approach with helping others. However, they suffered a lot of flooding and damage at their own clubhouse.

Their 8thanniversary was a celebration of helping others and each other as well as a celebration of restructuring their own clubhouse.The work that was involved was saluted. The Southern Riders Motorcycle Club, Robeson Chapter, did not allow the storm nor it’s aftermath to dampen their spirits despite the devastating effects it had on the entire area.

The day of festivities for all the hard work, began with a welcoming party. The guests arrived and were readily emerged in the party. They talked about all the repairs and restructuring that took place since the storm. These guys put in a lot of work and the place looked great!

By 7 o’clock the party was in full effect as the band started to play. The whole place was rocking it out to the music. We all sang along and some chose to dance. The party was nonstop inside and outside the clubhouse. The SRMC Robeson Chapter had many visitors in attendance and of course many other chapters were there to represent their SRMC brotherhood.

It was a great place to be that day! The Southern Riders, Robeson Chapter gave their thanks for all that were in attendance and the party continued throughout the night. What a great way to celebrate the obstacles that they worked so diligently to overcome. These guys did a great job and the party was the icing on the cake! Congratulations to Southern Riders Motorcycle Club, Robeson County Chapter it was a Great Anniversary Party!

Harley-Davidson Footwear -Vardon Riding Shoe

I

am an old school kinda guy.

I like high gloss paint and lots of chrome, black leather, chains, and boots. I have always worn boots, so have all my biker idols. So I was a little weary when Harley-Davidson Footwear asked us to demo a riding shoe, but why not give em a shot?

We ordered the Vardon and they showed up promptly, in a HarleyDavidson Footwear box, wrapped in Bar & Shield tissue paper. Pretty cool so far. The first thing that stood out to me was the sturdy design of the shoe’s waterproof full grain leather uppers.

Flat black leather makes up 90% of the shoe and then a strip of glossy leather rises up on the front sides of the shoe where the laces connect. They also threw on there a black Bar & Shield Outline that helps make sure everyone knows it’s a Harley-Davidson Footwear product, without being too loud about it. I like that. The Laces loops run on the inside of the glossy leather strips, so there are no visible lace holes adding

to the sleek look of the “Vardon”. The uppers on the “Vardon” are 6.5” above the sole, comparable to a high top shoe, so they cover and pad the ankle bone providing protection if it’s ever needed. As I mentioned, the “Vardon” is also waterproof, which is a big deal to me, and a feature that I always want in my riding gear.

I actually got to test this feature out personally when I got caught in a rain shower while ripping around on my Dyna.

The “Vardon” held up to the test, and the water that usually runs down my jeans into my normal riding boots was kept out by the tightly laced Vardon riding shoes!

Total win there!

The sole of the Vardon comes in white, providing some contrast to the black uppers, and while they will require some attention if you are trying to keep them sparkling clean, it only takes a damp cloth to return them to their former glory. The bottom of the soles has a cool

diamond-ish pattern of slip resistant rubber with the Bar & Shield in Harley orange.

Like the description on Harley-DavidsonFootwear.com says, the Vardon is “Street and Road Ready”. Shortly after lacing them up, the “Vardon” was adapted to my feet and very comfortable. It’s one of those shoes that you can rock any day and throw your leg over your bike and go for a ride without compromising the protection of your feet. I have been wearing them for two weeks, now, and I am very happy with the functionality of the shoe.

As mentioned before the “Vardon” is waterproof, which is accomplished with a breathable Hydro Guard waterproof membrane lining, the “Vardon” can get pretty warm on hot Carolina summer days, but If you pair them up with a nice summer Harley-Davidson sock, you will be good to go. I look forward to wearing the “Vardon” into the winter as an equal to my normal riding boots.

Raleigh A House bill that would have banned the use of hand-held cellphones while driving has died in a Senate committee, but its sponsors and supporters say they will try again next session.

The Hands Free NC Act sought to eliminate a source of distracted driving that its proponents say contributes to crashes that kill and injure people and drive up insurance rates. Its primary sponsor in the House, Rep. Kevin Corbin, a Republican who represents the far western tip of the state, owns an insurance agency, and state Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and industry groups were vocal supporters.

The bill had no organized opposition, says Joe Stewart, a lobbyist for the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina.

“No one is for distracted driving,” Stewart said. “Distracted driving does not have a lobbyist working on its behalf.” But Stewart said he and other supporters failed to persuade enough legislators that the state should prohibit something people have felt free to do while behind the wheel. “You’ve got to make a strong case that a public safety benefit warrants that restriction,” Stewart said. “Our hope is to be able to come back in 2020 and make another run at this.”

Corbin fashioned the bill after one approved last summer in Georgia, which became the 16th state to ban hand-held cellphone use while driving. This spring, Tennessee became the 17th, using the Georgia law as a template, Stewart said.

Supporters say North Carolinians are ready for a ban. A poll of 660 registered voters conducted by Meredith College this winter found that about 79 percent believed the General Assembly should address distracted driving and that 82 percent would support a “hands-free law” to bar the use of hand-held cellphones or other electronic devices.

“It is clear that most citizens now recognize the serious problems that hand-held devices present for safety on North Carolina roads,” David McLennan, director of The Meredith Poll, said in a statement when an earlier version of the poll was released last fall. “The support for new legislation to address the problems these devices cause cuts across political, economic, geographical, and educational lines, meaning that people don’t see this as a controversial political issue.”

And yet for years proposals to ban hand-held phones while driving have gone nowhere in the General Assembly. Even support from then House Speaker Thom Tillis, now a U.S. senator, wasn’t enough to get a hands-free bill to move in 2011, and three bills introduced since then in the Senate by another Republican, former Sen. Jeff Tarte of Mecklenburg County, also failed to get a vote.

The General Assembly did make it illegal for drivers under 18 to talk on a hand-held cellphone and for drivers of any age to text and drive. But law enforcement agencies say enforcing

the texting ban is difficult, because drivers are still allowed to hold a phone to talk or get directions.

Corbin said when he introduced the proposed ban this winter, he expected it would be difficult to persuade conservatives like himself that it was worth impinging on people’s personal freedom. He said he understands the hesitation among legislators.

“I’m very aware that this bill would affect 7 million drivers in North Carolina. It’s a big deal,” he said. “When you have a bill that affects the public so widely, it should be scrutinized.”

Corbin agreed to several changes as the bill moved through committees in the House, until a watered down version was approved by the full House in May. It banned the use of hand-held phones and electronic devices only if it resulted in careless or reckless driving.

Corbin and his allies in the Senate sought to have the blanket ban restored, and hoped to do it in the Senate Commerce and Insurance Committee. Instead, Corbin said he learned

secondhand that the committee’s leaders had decided not to bring it up for consideration. The committee’s three chairmen — John Alexander Jr., Chuck Edwards and Rick Gunn — did not respond to a request for comment.

Editor’s note: Stewart said. “No one is for distracted driving.” While no one disputes the fact that texting while driving is dangerous, one cannot but wonder where to draw the line when defining “distracted driving.” Should the government be permitted to consider if eating a sandwich or turning your radio end up being infractions of the law? Since we support legislation every session to allow us to “decide” is it wise open the door to potential government overreach like this?
