Letter From The Editors Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine has been our life for 24 years or 289 months or 8760 days. However you want to count it, it’s been one hell of an experience. Every month after we send the magazine files off to the printer, we sit back in amazement that we got it done, on time, again. Sometimes it goes smoothly and by sometimes I mean once every year or so. Most of the time it’s like whiskey throttling through wet grass, uphill. We have tried and true methods and systems that have been developed over our 24 years of this publication, but things still go sideways from time to time. That’s why the end of every magazine is a celebration. We used to gather in the kitchen of my parents house, before we moved into our first office, I was too young to drink, but we would still celebrate the accomplishment. Years later we would gather in the office “break room” and crack open some beers and have a Hog Oil, the company shot, which consisted of ice cold Yeager and Gentleman Jack. Then we would laugh at all the jokes, near mistakes and revel in the triumph of a job well done. Dad used to call it “Slaying The Dragon”. This is the first full magazine year (August – August) that we have produced the magazine without Dad and we sure do miss him.

It’s been hard but is an honor to carry the torch and together Molly, Maggie & myself, will continue his quest of recording the motorcycle history in the Carolinas.

We couldn’t put together a single issue without our sales and support staff.

They are constantly on the road delivery magazines, sending in articles and photos and being our eyes and ears in their communities. A huge thanks goes out to all the businesses that trust us with their advertising investment. Some of the advertisers who are in this issue have been with us for more than a decade and there are still some that started advertising with us in 1998. That’s a lot of trust. Thank you to all our loyal readers as well, we appreciate y’alls support as well.

Thunder in the Smokies Motorcycle Rally is on the front cover of this month’s magazine. Chris Anthony has been promoting this rally through the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for 19 years and Mark and Molly attended the rally twice a year most years. Y’all, make your plans now to head up to Beautiful Maggie Valley, NC and enjoy some live music, tour rides, vendors, bike games and good ol biker fun at the oldest and largest rally in Maggie Valley on September 9-11, 2022.

he motorcycle community rallies around veteran’s

events and for the past six years they have showed up in big numbers to the Big Bikes 4 Vets Purple Heart Ride. The Seventh annual event, on June 18th, Sponsored by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group was no different. Jack Waters spends countless hours coordinating the fully escorted ride and gathering sponsors and top shelf raffle prizes to ensure that this event lives up to the hype and honors the Veterans it represents.

Bikers from all over the state ride into the American Legion #55 in Winston-Salem, NC. Kickstands go up at 11:30am but you gotta get there early to get a good spot, as the large parking lot fills up quickly. There are also guest speakers like Summerfield, NC Mayor B.J. Barnes. Barnes is the former Sheriff of Guilford Co and a Marine (once a Marine, always a Marine, right?). Jack makes sure to thank all his staff and even awarded Elaine Dills an award in her namesake for her dedication to the event. A special guest in attendance was Lexi.

Lexi is a very special young lady, with Cerebral Palsy, who honors veterans with her Trees Of Valor which are displayed at various locations in NC and contain veterans names and photos. Jack announced a goal to get young Lexi a therapy

bicycle to the applause of the crowd. Tyler Stiles of the Title Sponsor, Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, was in attendance and riding along with the group which is no surprise since they are the “Firm That Rides”. The national anthem was performed with a color guard followed by a group photo. That wound down the pre ride ceremony and was followed by some ride instructions. One of the features of Big Bikes 4 Vets is the NASCAR style “Start Your Engines” call. Riders wait for the announcement after the ride briefing and then all fire up at the same time. This ride is fully escorted by the Winston-Salem and Davidson County’s finest so that once the ride starts it’s just a cruise through the country with no stops or interference. Once the motor patrol rolls out, you embark on country tour that lasts over an hour. Your feet don’t hit the ground and ride rolls through until you come to the ending point. Along the route, there were folks on the side of the way waving flags and their hands, other vehicles stop on the side of the road and watch the spectacle of 100 plus bikes rolling through.

The ride ended at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in WinstonSalem, NC. The lot filled quickly and the street filled with motorcycles parking on the curb! The line formed quickly in front of the table with a wall of Chic-fil-A boxes that served as our lunch. Didn’t I tell you this ride was top notch? There

was a table of raffle items set up as well. There were multiple designs and sizes of wooden American flags up for raffle along with other patriotic themed items. The grand prize of the afternoon was a .223 rifle. Some vendors were set up as well, rounding out the experience for the riders. Once we all snagged a bite to eat and bought up a ton of raffle tickets, Jack took to the bullhorn to see who won what. Ticket after ticket was met by happy winners and once the .223 was claimed the crowd dissipated. Some wondered up to Xtreme Wings N Things upstairs from Smokin’ H-D and others had had enough and were heading out. Either way it was a great end to yet another successful Big Bikes 4 Vets ride. The event raised approximately $10k for Hero Center, Americans Assisting Veterans, Triad Honor Flight and individual vets in need. Jack summed it up by saying, “It’s not about how many show up each year, or the fanfare, or who gets recognized or not. It’s about the soldiers and families that we serve”. Ya nailed it Jack. Rispoli finished third, a half-second ahead of O’Hara’s factory Indian Challenger. Six of the top 10 finishers were aboard Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Travis Wyman was the fast qualifier on Saturday, setting a new class record of 1:29.748 on the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course. But it was Kyle Wyman who won the King of the Baggers Mission Challenge 3-lap sprint race and winner-take-all $5,000 purse immediately following Q2. Both factory Harley-Davidson riders started from the front row along with Rispoli.

In the 8-lap King of the Baggers feature race, O’Hara jumped out into the lead from the second row of the grid. But Kyle Wyman kept the pressure on him with inside and outside moves at several points around the course and then passed

him cleanly in turn 9 on the second lap. From that point, Kyle broke away and was never challenged for the lead.

“It was really greasy out there today, and I was cautious with how the edge grip was,” said Kyle Wyman. “O’Hara lost the rear coming out of turn nine and that allowed me to go by.

I was happy to get clear and run my own race and manage the gap to the finish. It’s just great to get a 1-2-3 for Harley-Davidson and to reward the entire Harley-Davidson factory team who made this possible.”

“To come home second to Kyle is pretty amazing,” said Travis Wyman. “We did it the other way around at Road America. And now we’re tied in points. So these last two rounds are going to be pretty awesome for the fans.”

Time Passes Full Throttle Magazines that Tank wrote, this is from one in November 99. We just passed 16 years of Tanks passing away. I come across this article he wrote about when and why he got saved. Tank started writing for Full Throttle when it came out. I want to share the article with you. He and Mark are having a good old time in Heaven.

I miss them both dearly.

Someone asked me why I refer to myself when writing this article for the magazine. The reason I point to myself is that I know where I have been and used to be.

I’ve been riding motorcycles since 1968 and I have been where a lot of you have been. I’ve not been the best, neither have I been the worst. Like a lot of people, I’ve had my share of drugs, alcohol and other things this world has to offer.

Traveling around the United States partying with the best and always looking for a new high.

Money was no problem, I had plenty. I got it by lying, cheating, stealing and other illegal ways, til one night in a motel room sitting there thinking of how to take a man’s life, because of a bad deal that had went down. Then I turned the gun on myself thinking that would be the right way out. For some reason, I laid the gun down on the bed and picked up a was sitting here looking through some old

book called the Holy Bible. I read about a man named Jesus and got down on my knees and cried out to God for help. My life changed that night and has never been the same.

I say all of that to say this, I was looking for something that couldn’t be found in a needle, bottle, or rolled up in a piece of paper. Jesus loves us enough to die for us that we can be free from all the junk of this world.

John 3: 16-17, It makes no difference who you are or where you have been if you will call on his name you will experience a high that you have never had before. It will be one that will never run out.

19th Annual World Honda Chopper Meet

Story and Photos by Alan Dockery he North Carolina mountains draw folks from all over the world to come ride and play in our backyard. The last weekend of June, I joined a bunch of bikers, for the World Honda Chopper Meet at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort, Ferguson, NC. I’ve attended this gathering for years, riding my favorite old Honda. The meet is mostly folks who ride older, single overhead cam CB 750s of the type made from 1969 to 1978. Later twin cam bikes and some newer Honda choppers, bobbers and customs were welcome.

The meet is an internet community getting together in the real world. Most of the folks attending are members of the internet forum at www.hondachopper.com so they are known by their online names. Folks came from all over for the World Honda Chopper Meet. Red hauled in from Oklahoma. Dave rode down from Massachusetts. His bike confused my brain since the custom frame mounted Harley parts around the 750 SOHC engine. Travis came from Pennsylvania. I love his ratty CB750. Chuck and Mel are kinda the hosts and come every year from New Jersey. Jeff hauls his beautiful show bikes from Georgia. Tony came from Florida. We were glad to see Dave from Arkansas. Several of the folks that weekend came from the Carolinas with cool old Hondas. Dave left the GeezerGlide and rode Elvis. Barry rode up from Rock Hill.

Zach brought Boogie Nights to The Roost. I dug Rodney’s Basic Black Bike.

These bikes ain’t just for sitting around looking cool. Those folks like to ride and most of them don’t have roads like we enjoy. Some arrive a few days early since there are so many cool places to visit in Western Carolina and you can ride a different awesome road every day.

Matt, John and Jay had to tell about their ride over the mountain a few times. North Carolina has many miles of roads, even state highways, that ain’t paved. Just because a road is on the map doesn’t mean it’s OK for motorcycles.

They found Globe Road. It ain’t paved. It’s ruts and washboard. Then they met the crew scraping and spreading fresh gravel. Their two choppers and a Goldwing eventually made it to the bar, much later than planned. But they have a good

story to tell and photos of choppers in loose gravel.

Saturday folks went riding to enjoy some local roads and stop for a cool beverage or ice cream. Some of those guys can really handle their choppers since our mountain roads can be a little scary for folks who don’t ride them regularly. Once everyone was back from lunch and the ice cream run, we gathered for a group photo. Riders’ Roost is a great place for photos along the creek.

Before we scattered around the campground we had a solemn gathering to remember a longtime active member who passed away this year. Kate, Red Good’s wife, was loved by everyone who knew her. Thanks Jay for leading a ceremony and letting folks share their memories of her.

That afternoon we enjoyed checking out each other’s bikes and talking with new friends. Chuck DV is a real New Jersey Italian and always has something good planned for supper.

Classic Italian dishes from his Mother’s recipe box. This is one party where I don’t cook and instead I enjoy other folks’ fixins.

After a great supper they held drawings, raffle and an auction of parts and things. You know one man’s junk is the part another needs for his next build. There was some good stuff in the raffles and auction too, plus some Harley parts. Old Chopper Heads don’t need a band or a party, we can have fun buying old bike parts.

A few years ago, I asked Chuck DV for some history and comments.

“Hondachopper.com was started in 2000 by Mark Cooper for those in need of a place to talk and swap motorcycle parts for CB750’s,” Chuck said. “In 2007 Mark handed the site over to me and Tommy Summers (aka LRT). It’s hard to believe that we’ve grown to over 2,200 members worldwide.”

“Almost 20 years ago we attended the Smoke Out and someone mentioned this little motorcycle campsite in Ferguson, NC. We migrated over to the Riders’ Roost and we’ve been going there ever since. It’s now our home away from home. The

campground itself is beautiful with the creek running alongside the site. It’s a nice spot to cool off after a long day of riding. We love riding the roads around Ferguson. Many of us are not used to twisties, and riding the roads around Ferguson is amazing,” Chuck said.

“Nearly 50 members from all over the country came to celebrate the CB750 and those who customize these bikes. Every-

one comes to talk about bikes. It doesn’t have to be a CB750, but there’s lots of talks about bikes, chopping them, building them, riding them. You get the picture. What a creative group we are. We used to have a midnight auction for everyone to buy and sell bike parts. Now the auction is started after dinner by the Gang Of The Four members and it helps support the Hondachopper.com website. The GOTF staff from Hondachopper.com manage the event. Hondachopper.com provides meals for those in attendance Friday evening, Saturday morning and Saturday night. GOTF member, Rake, and my wife, Melanie do most of the cooking with some help from members.

All the food is homemade.”

“Every year we have the World Honda Chopper Meet, the Honda Chopper family grows. We have a great time gathering at the Roost. We have no desire to go anywhere else. Some of the same people have been going year after year, and for some people it’s their first time. We treat everyone like family.”

“Hey, it’s been a tough two years with that damn Rona virus, but the Hondachopper faithful showed up again at the Roost. Really happy to see some new faces and some great bikes this year. Benefit Ride For Mark Shaver

By John Ridenhour and Misty Thomas n June 25th I had the honor of participating in a benefit ride for Mark Shaver. Mark Shaver is a fellow rider who has been battling for his life due to covid. In August 2021 Mark was diagnosed with covid. Mark ended up on life support for 136 days. He required dialysis for a short time, numerous surgeries, CPR twice, a feeding tube, and many other life saving measures. He was released to come home from the hospital after 9 months of treatment. Mark has been home for just over a month now, but still has a long road to recovery and is currently confined to a wheelchair. He has limited use of his hands due to being in a coma for such a long period of time and suffers some neurological issues as well. These issues should improve with time and lots of in-home therapy.

The day started off at Aquadale Baptist Church, the ride was originally gonna be a poker run but it was decided to do a charity ride. People started showing up at 9am, it was hot and muggy but it was for a great cause so people were in good spirits. At 9:30 the rides officiating club, Ain’t

Rite Riders, called a safety meeting and gave an overview of the route we would be taking. The ride that day would take us down South Stanly School Road to Norwood, 731 to Peaking NC, then Peaking Rd to Troy, NC. From there we would Ride Hwy 134 to Cox’s Harley-Davidson for our 1 and only stop.

It was a beautiful Ride through the backroads of Stanly and Mongomery counties. As always the folks at Cox’s Harley-Davidson of Asheboro were awesome while the group stretched our legs and cooled off. I also was making my wish list while I was there, a guy has gotta dream. We left Cox’s and went back down 134 to Troy hit 24/27 to Albemarle winding through town to Montgomery Avenue where Mark Shaver lives. It was very much a tear jerker as we went buy reving up those bike and waving at Mark as he set in his wheelchair at the end of the drive. Things like this definitely makes ya do some soul searching and take a look at your own life. We left Montgomery Avenue back through Albemarle to 134 and back to the church where we enjoyed great BBQ and fellowship. They also hosted an awesome raffle. All and all it was a great day and a success. $13,000 dollars was raised by the 70 bikes and other people donating to the charity as well as the indoor flea market put on by Aquadale fire and rescue. The funds will help Mark and his family with medical expenses and other bills which have accumulated during his battle with Covid.

Tiny’s Tales From The Road The Road Provides o the best of my knowledge no one on a motorcycle

has ever died from being stranded on the road with no food and water. There is a long tradition embedded in our DNA to help travelers in bad situations.

Hospitality still exists, even in this modern day and age. If you’re traveling on a motorcycle on a divided highway a motorcyclist traveling in the opposite direction with 50 yards of green space between you will often wave, yet if you’re on the side of the road suddenly, most motorcyclists won’t see you as they zoom past. There are still folks on bikes that will stop, but in the smartphone era it seems less often. I’ve been broken down or out of gas plenty of times and the road does always provide, eventually. Sometimes it’s a fellow rider, and sometimes it’s just a good human doing a good deed.

It got me thinking, there’s a whole generation or two of people on motorcycles that never rode without a cell phone, never had to set points with a dime and a matchbook or had to push their bike to the next gas station. I don’t mean to glamorize any of those things or think that those things qualify into the hollowed halls of biker Valhalla, I’m just making the observation. I’ll be the first to admit if you’re on the side of the road on anything without a kickstart and points there’s probably not much anyone without a trailer or a roadside assistance program can do for you in the modern motorcycle era. Thankfully these little problems are rare nowadays, the downside is that when a modern bike breaks down it normally breaks down hard. A quick trip to the auto parts store or tractor supply won’t fix you up. It’s almost useless to carry a tool roll.

When traveling on an old bike I normally carry spare spark plugs, a master link, points and condenser, and enough tools to rebuild my bike in a gas station parking lot if need be. I used to ride around San Diego and Los Angeles County with no cell phone, no map, just a tool roll. Thankfully I never broke down, just had a few wiring issues I had to figure out on the road with grounds. That’s just how it was done. It was fun. A ride 250 miles into the desert mountains was an adventure. A 500-mile ride was a major accomplishment.

I did my first long distance solo ride when I was 21 years old on a Kawasaki W-650, a “retro” model very similar to a 60’s Triumph. I left San Diego in the early evening to avoid Los Angeles rush hour. I had my Navy issued seabag packed with everything I would need for a month strapped to the back of the bike somehow, and way too many layers of clothes for the Southern California weather. It was early April, and I was sweating. I was nervous but determined that I could do this. When I got up to Gorman (a town near the summit of the “Grapevine”) the temperature had dropped at least 20 degrees.

I had never ridden in weather below the 50’s but I remember old timers telling me about stuffing newspaper in between their layers to block the wind. I got some papers at the gas sta-

tion and did my best to wrap myself up, but it wasn’t enough.

I was freezing!

I-5 is a major truck route in California and the long stretch between Bakersfield and Stockton at night it’s full of gear jammers. This was before GPS and 8 hour driving restrictions so those truckers were hauling ass and would pass me on my little 650 and damn near blow me into the aqueducts (or so I imagined). So here I am, a new rider, cold and alone, shivering and being blown all over the interstate. By this time it’s around midnight, the wind chill had to have put me down in the 30’s I’m sure. My ass was numb from the banana seat, and I was shivering so hard I could barely keep my numb hands on the bars. I was stopping about every 50 miles at the rest stops and gas stations to warm up my hands in the hand dryer. Looking at my watch I realized I was making terrible time. I’m not sure why it never occurred to me to stop and get a motel. It wasn’t that I couldn’t afford one, it was just that I probably thought a motel was a waste of money. I had made this trip in my car plenty of times and just figured that it was no different on a bike. As I got closer to home the sky was getting lighter and the temperature warmer. I made my last gas stop in a town I

was very familiar with on the outskirts of where I would call home. I knew that I was going to make it. I had a nice cup of coffee and watched the sunrise off to the East. Despite over 400 miles in mostly miserable conditions, I was re-energized.

The feeling of triumph was building. I had my second wind and decided to take the backway to my family’s house. I saw the early morning commuters on their way to work and I was feeling free. It doesn’t matter if it’s 50, 500 or 5,000 miles, feeling free is why we ride these machines, and there’s no better feeling. Suddenly, those hard miles feel like merit badges earned along the way. I pulled into the driveway, parked the bike, and caught a nap on my dad’s couch.

I spent the next month riding around Northern California and when people had heard I had ridden from San Diego on that little 650 they were generally impressed and I was proud, not going to lie. It’s amazing how many people talk themselves out taking a long-distance trip on their bike, especially older and “less reliable” motorcycles. You can tour on any motorcycle, and no matter how comfortable your motorcycle is or how much cargo it can hold at some point you’ll probably be uncomfortable, and you’ll wish you could carry more at some point, but you’ll make do, and you’ll push through. It’ll probably take longer than you expect, too. It’s amazing the places you can go, the things you can see and the people you’ll meet out on the road, but the feeling of freedom is always my favorite part.

Springers Bike Night

By Rose and Lloyd eff Schmid, the owner of Springers has a good Tuesday bike night crowd, but wanted to do something a little different. Jeff enlisted the help of the Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers to put on a Best Bike on the Lot Contest to spice up bike night.

Pair that with the regular bike night crowd, some great live music and all the biker amenities at Springers Bar and this will be the Tuesday bike night of the area!

The Best Bike on the Lot Bike Night was set for July 12. Everything pointed to a great time and the weather was outstanding too. Springers parking lot was lined with vendors including: Vickie Cribb with handmade jewelry, Frank Ebert and the best selection of sun glasses on the east coast, Rob Parson with Crazy Bitch

The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers not only sent their van and two beautiful gals to hand out swag, but Attorney Sean Clayton also showed up to be part of bike night!

The Best Bike On The Lot contest came with a $100 cash prize. The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers group were the judges and took their time studying all the bikes on before deciding on a winner. They were several wonderful contenders, but the winning bike was Matt Arvin’s ‘74 Shovelhead chopper.

Matt’s chopper features a 74ci Shovelhead Engine, ratchet top 4-speed transmission with a Paughco frame, front end, gas tank, oil tank and pipes. This kick only sled runs an open belt primary, foot clutch and suicide shifter. Matt took a year to built that bad boy in his two car garage. Naturally he was pleased to slide that crispy $100 bill into his pocket and snap some photos for this article. Then we all got to watch him kickstart this old school bike to life. Congrats Matt!

Cox’s Harley-Davidson Bike Night At Bigfoot Bar & Grill By: John Ridenhour n June 24th Cox’s Harley-Davidson brought bike night to Bigfoot Bar and Grill. As always it was a great ride to Bigfoot and the expectation of a great time wasn’t washed away. Not only was the great food and a great atmosphere but as always great people and a great band. Community Service band rocked on the newly constructed outside pontoon stage and as always put on a great show with awesome music. The weather was awesome and the outside bar was packed out as well as the inside bar. Cox Harley-Davidson and their stellar staff had the area set up with great H-D merchandise. Valley, NC is near some of the best riding roads on the east coast, it is home to dozens of beautiful mountain views, and everything you’d come to expect from a quaint mountain town. Nestled in the middle of the valley is the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds that has been host to nearly 20 years of the Thunder In The Smokies Motorcycle Rally. It is oldest & largest rally in the great smoky mountains and has been featured on Moonshiners, Speed TV’s Corbin’s Ride-On, Carolina Cruiser TV and in Easy Rider Magazine, Full Throttle and more! A faithful crowd of bikers, including the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine make their way to the festival grounds every year making attending this event is a tradition. We’ve been attending so long I remember riding to this event with my folks on a Honda Shadow 500, prior to being legal drinking age. Event promoter Chris Anthony secures great bands, vendors and emcee’s the hugely popular bike games. The event also features a people’s choice bike show. It’s quick and easy popular vote bike show that brings out some stunning bikes for the competition.

turnouts for the Thunder in the Smokies Motorcycle Rally.

Both the Spring event, April 29-May 1 and the Summer event, June 24-26 had record breaking crowds that filled the valley hotels, shops, and restaurants. The Friday of the rally, the vendors are set up and features four bands that play from 3pm through 11pm in the evening just to give the rally goers a bit of a warmup. Saturday is a full day of biker fun, with the gates opening at 9am for a guided tour ride that starts at 10am. It’s not a long ride, but takes you up some beautiful twisty mountain roads of the Blue Ridge Parkway to a beautiful Mountain View, then back to the party. The Ride In Bike Show follows the tour ride with a $1000 cash prize. Don’t leave your bike in the bike show corral too long, cause the day moves quickly to the other side of the vendor field for the bike games. Chris takes to the mic and gets the crowd going while rally goers show their biker know how in games like the slow ride, weenie bite and potato in the haystack. There are even some people games that don’t require bikes to participate.

The games carry $1000 in cash prizes to those who are brave enough to enter. Once the games are finished its time to really dive into the vendors. The Maggie Valley Festival Grounds is a large, beautiful field and it is completely enclosed by vendors. It’s going to take you a while to check out all the cool stuff they have up for sale. The day finishes out with three live acts, the summer rally featured 3000 Souls, The Ali Randolph Band and finished up with Chelsea Foster Band to bring the night to a close.

Sunday the Festival grounds are open til around 3pm for those who want to do a little extra vendor shopping. The day also features a FREE pancake breakfast by the CMA and a 10 am church service by Freedom Biker Church. That still leaves plenty of time to do some riding, don’t waste the opportunity to ride these great mountain roads! The Inaugural Veteran Suicide Awareness Poker Run / Rally

By Wally Wersching n Saturday June 25th, the “Forsaken Brotherhood” held their first Veteran Suicide Awareness Poker Run and Rally in Morganton, NC in support of “Operation Battle Horse”. There is a statistic that states that twenty-two veterans kill themselves every day. The “Forsaken Brotherhood” is a group of Veterans and families from Hickory, NC working to help in the fight against PTSD. The “Forsaken Brotherhood” was founded by “Sasquatch”; a veteran who saw the need to help other veterans with PTSD, and trauma related mental injuries. He’s acting as president, and has the support of his family, community, and friends.

“Operation Battle Horse” was founded by another veteran who lived through multiple deployments. He has seen and experienced firsthand the impact that service and specifically combat service can have on service members and their families’ lives. The “Operation Battle Horse” mission is to support our veterans and service members struggling with the effects of PTSD, TBI, and addiction utilizing a variety of techniques in session with a therapy horse and a trauma recovery coach.

Their vision is to improve quality of life, introduce healthy coping mechanism, and combat suicide in the veteran community.

The Poker Run registration started at 9 AM at Bestway

The rally was held at the last stop Devine Farms at 2:00PM with food vendors, silent auction, gun raffle, music and the 50/50 drawing.

There were other events happening on Saturday June 25th, but I wanted to go to this one because by attending and donating, I could help stop veteran suicides. I parked with the other bikes then went to the registration table, made my donation and placed a stack of Full Throttle magazines on the table.

Everybody seemed very friendly as I walked around talking with the people who were there. They didn’t stay long because the run wasn’t a group ride. Each bike made it’s own way to all the stops. Most of the people I met were veterans. I talked with a couple who were matching “War Stories”.

They had a very interesting

tour of duty.

I met “Sasquatch”, and we talked for a while. He seems very dedicated to helping veterans.

There were 63 participants in the event and raised $1,000 for their help with PTSD. An additional $400 was donated to “Operation Battle Horse”. That was a pretty good day for their first annual event. Next year’s will be bigger and better. I’ll definitely go again. It was a fun experience for a great cause.

July Celebrations At Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson By: Chi

Bragg Harley-Davidson celebrated the entire month of July! 4th of July celebrations took place the entire weekend. There was an amazing turnout; the food was on the grill, beer in the cooler, motorcycles were all around and last but not least, the bikini bike wash in the corner lot.

The celebrations continue the following week with Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson’s 8th Birthday Party. Everything was decorated for a spectacular birthday celebration for everyone there! Food, beer, bikes and bikinis; you know that Fort Bragg ort

The grill stayed hot the remainder of the month with Los Artesanos MC at the helm on the 23rd; passing the tongs and grill mitts to Soldiers United MC’s Scholarship fund on the 30th.

June starts getting hot in the Carolina Sandhills. Afternoon rain showers might cool us down. But the thunder y’all love was at Rockingham Dragway. Thunder At The Rock brought the sound of Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles roaring all weekend. Cruising the grounds and ripping down the drag strip. Yeah, there was all kinds of bikes and homebuilt creations at The Rock for the weekend.

Friday was rather mellow as the crowd gathers and folks set up their camping spots. Hangout with Bikers who’ve come to Rockingham for years and meet the new folks.

Many of us are excited when the gates open and make a quick pass through the vendors and exhibitors first thing.

Look for folks who are there again and growing their shops with more products this year. See who you want to come back and talk to more. Start thinking about what you need to buy.

Scope out the schedule since there are things going on all over the property and you will be busy trying to enjoy it all.

Before the official Thunder At The Rock greeting and the bands take the main stage, you can already hear bikes roaring down the famous Rockingham Drag Strip. Yeah folks, for a few hours at a time the drag strip was open for us to make passes. Old fashioned grudge racing with a pretty girl to flag the start. This year the track ran the lights and timers too for folks who really wanted to know what their machine was running. Y’all who know me, know I love a party at the drag strip.

Saturday the party was in high gear. Several bands took the stage to entertain folks in the shaded vendor area. I like Bike Games and that afternoon some folks I know who are good at them took to the field. Sorry I didn’t keep track of winners.

Making Lots Of Passes Sometimes it was Arm Drop Drags. Instead of using the Christmas Tree Lights to start, one of the Pretty Pin-Up Girls would flag the riders off the start. Arm Drop Drags was just a fun time to run your bike down the famous Rockingham Dragway. Owned and managed by Steve Earwood for many decades, The Rock is an internationally known drag strip for setting records. And folks at Thunder At The Rock were playing on it with their street bikes, choppers, race bikes, baggers, sport bikes and minibikes. Having a great time.

There was a real race during Thunder At The Rock. The All Harley Drag Racing Association held a regional sportsman race running street and index classes. Thanks to Bill Rowe and Paul Watson for getting some real race bikes to turn up the thunder.

I might have given Mitch Dibble, Laurinburg, NC, a little extra luck when I helped put those Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine stickers on his bike. He went on to win the Trophy Street Class. Ken Strauss is from my area near Lake Norman, NC, and doubled up with wins in Super Gas and Top Eliminator. Tony Myers won Super Pro. Quick Minibike Drag Racers Doug “Hippy” Dixon and Hannah Stewart are doing a great job running The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Minibike Drag Racing Series this year.

“Thunder at the Rock was a huge success for The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Minibike Drag Racing Series,” Hippy said. “We had our biggest turnout to date, with 21 racers from all over the southeastern US arriving in Rockingham to compete for the win in three classes.”

The minibike drags are kinda new, but the Minibike Parking Lot Races have been a hit at The Rock for years. Mason Pittman, The Minibike Misfits from Georgia, came up to run those races.

Mason won the Stock Class. Nathan Ogiba, Burgaw, NC, won the Modified Class. Eric Steinway raced to the Unlimited Class win. Carl Wilson and Charlie Williams are hard to beat in the Sidecar Class.

“It’s all fun and games until you run your old lady over with a sidecar,” Mason said. He brings an impressive, powerful machine to race, but McKenzie fell off.

If you dig minibikes from classic to modern, you should have seen the Minibike Show Carl Wilson put on. Thanks Carl, that was cool. Lots of minibikes entered and the builders enjoyed talking about their machines.

Saturday night the party moved to the band stage area. The heat whipped some of us hard, so by dark it was time to chill and think about another fun Thunder At The Rock weekend.

Hearts & Hope Run

Story and Photos by Tara McAllister aturday June 18 was the Rolling Saints 4th Annual Hearts and Hope Poker Run in memory of Greyson Chamberlain. There were more than 140 bikers in attendance to show support to such an amazing Foundation. The Hearts and Hope Foundation’s mission is to allow the HEARTS of all to provide HOPE to children and families who are in need. The Chamberlain family was once one of those families. This is one of the many reason the Rolling Saints RC holds the Hearts and Hope Foundation is such high regard.

Greyson’s parents and grandparents are members of the Rolling Saints RC. The Rolling Saints RC is a non-profit organization that was started in 2016 whose main mission is to protect and assist each other and those who are in need.

The Rolling Saints RC would like to thank everyone for coming out to help them show support to the Hearts and Hope foundation and to say, we hope to see you again next year.

Hot Dog Tour #1

Jamaica for my 40th birthday, Ya know, you are supposed to really celebrate the landmark birthdays. But as fate, work and finances have it, the closest I was getting to Jamaica was an old Bob Marley cd that I used to listen to in high school. It’s ok though, cause all I really wanted to do for my birthday was to get away from the day to day BS and have a little fun and we all know the best way to get away is on two wheels with the wind in your face. So I made a plan to combine a few of my favorite things and take a whole day to ride, eat hotdogs and hang out with some of my friends. I did some research and picked out three of the top ten hotdog joints in North Carolina, threw in some landmarks to spread out consumption and made a loop out of it. It doesn’t happen often that I am just able to take a day to ride. Most of the time I have somewhere to be at a certain time and don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy the ride and the events, but this was different. This is what it’s all about, just being out there and riding.

We left out from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine office in Jamestown and headed west on US-64 to Statesville.

Our first stop was the home of the world famous footlong hot dogs, Jaybee’s. We did our best to avoid the highway and cruised the beautiful backroads of NC. Halfway to Statesville e were planning on going to

I had already made the mental note that this was exactly what I needed. The sun was shining, and we were riding through the gentle country curves that separate cornfields and other various farmlands. Jaybee’s wasn’t hard to find and there was already a healthy line of hot dog aficionados including the rest of my Hot Dog Tour friends. We slammed some wieners, made a ton of jokes, enjoyed some AC and then hit the road.

To space out the hotdogs I figured we could take in some sites and we headed west on US 70 to the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge. It wasn’t too far away and we continued down the backroads. I remember my folks taking photos of their bikes directly in front of the bridge, but they have it blocked off to traffic now and we had to hoof it 25 yards to the bridge. I’ve failed to mention that it was the hottest day of July yet. It wasn’t too hot to ride, just to hot to stop! So we sweated a bit and then decided it was a good time to head to our third destination, North Wilkesboro Speedway, but seek out some cold beverages as well. At that point I made another mental note that we should ride to a swimming hole next year. Luck has it that Wilkesboro isn’t a huge place and there was a couple bars right near the speedway. Our pack was now six bikes strong and we rolled up NC-16 to the bar and went in to cool down. Although this was a detour from the planned Hot Dog Tour there were Hot Dogs on the menu, so we ordered a round “all the way”. As it ends up, all our stops had taken longer than expected on paper. That’s not abnormal when it comes to motorcycle plans, and as it was, this day was about pounding some miles and eating hotdogs and we had done that. It was near 4pm and the afternoon

thunderstorms associated with hot summer weather were popping up all over the place and we were forced to make a decision or two. Beside the bar was a tattoo studio and we had decided that it was a good idea to all get hot dog tattoos to commemorate the occasion. As luck would have it, they were booked and couldn’t take seven walk in tattoos. So we decided that we would just roll on home and pick up the Tour and get tattoos on the next occasion. I had planned on eating at least eight hotdogs over the course of the day, but maybe it was a good thing that I didn’t reach that goal.

The ride back was just as good as the ride up and although the pack split up going in their different directions home, most of us made it without getting rained on. Now we are just looking for the next date we can all play hooky from work and go riding. There are, fortunately, a ton of good hotdog joints in the Carolinas and every time I relay this story, I get a new suggestion. It had been a long time since I had just had a day to ride, and this was just exactly what I needed. It reminded me that it wasn’t about the destination, it was and always has been about the ride. I truly appreciate all my Hotdog Tour friends for going along with my plan and I look forward to getting those hotdog tattoos and putting on some more miles in the near future.

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson Bike Show Nights

an all-star cast to put on the show, get some good prizes, and make sure there is some beer and music. Its not a hard recipe, but Smokin’ HarleyDavidson in Winston-Salem has it down and has been putting on Bike Show Nights for a few years now. They claim the first Thursday of the month from April through September and keep the doors open late to party. Their all-star bike show night team consists of Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, Universal Customs, Xtreme Wings N Things and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Biker Trash Nation slides by as a celebrity bike show judge from time to time and Dash City Dogs has become the official food vendor this year.

The party starts around 5:30 on the first Thursday of the month. You can ride any make and model motorcycle over to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson to enter it in the FREE bike show.

Bike show parking is always the best in the house, right up on the sidewalk in front of the dealership. We’ve had everything from Honda CT70’s, Shovelheads, crotch rockets, customs baggers and everything in between in the Bike Show Night Competition. Just ride on in and sign up for the bike show and grab a beer. Xtreme Wings N Things provides a keg of FREE beer for bike show entries and spectators alike and even on rainy nights, we float the keg before the night is over!

The tunes will be playing from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine tent as you walk around with some free suds in your cup, make sure you stop by and check out Shannon, Dexter, Tyler and the Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group. They are always set up, taking registrations for their yearly motorcycle giveaway and passing out free swag from the Firm That Rides.

Benefit For Angie By: Rose and Lloyd Benefit Ride for Angie Sams was scheduled at Springer’s in Greensboro on June 25th to help with some major medical bills. Then, June 18th, Angie and husband Larry Sam’s was involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident.

Larry suffered a broken ankle, many burns and other injuries. Angie was in ICU at Chapel Hill with 75% of her body covered in burns, she also had developed pneumonia. This intensified the need for a benefit even more important.

The ride began at Springers at 405 Rocky Knoll Rd in Greensboro.

Randy Craven led the ride, to Smokies in Burlington, next was Lucky’s Saloon in Burlington. Then to Liberty Tavern and a stop in at Whitt’s store on HWY 62 in Pleasant Garden. It was a beauti-

ful ride through the country ending at Springers for food, music, raffles and auction.

Jeff had been smoking pork shoulders and there was all kinds of sides provided by the American Military Family. Raffle tickets for a gun had been sold, and Ray Smith was the winner. The 50/50 was won by Carol Baker and she gave it all back. While enjoying the food, music and raffles you could also browse for some beautiful jewelry from Lucky 13 Jewelry, or sunglasses from FME Polarized Glasses & Extreme Sports.

The day was beautiful and I cannot say enough about the team at Springer, from Jeff Schmid the owner, the bartenders Heather and Ros, and everyone that brough food or donations for a family in need. Angie and Larry Sams have a lot of healing to do, but their biker family is always there to help.

Smart’s 1996 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy is a family heirloom. His uncle, Link Pendley, bought the Fat Boy in 2003 and wanted to make it into a show bike. He added his own flare with a bobbed Softail rear fender and some sweet upswept, slash cut D&D pipes. It’s said that that the unique pipes are 1 of 2 ever made. Link also drenched the Fat Boy in Arlen Ness billet chrome and flame accents. The bike features a wildly eye catching 10 color PPG clear coat paint job on it that is the very essence of the 90’s. Link wanted to make sure the bike stayed in the family and, late last year, passed this gorgeous bike to his nephew, Aubrey Smart, who has always loved the motorcycle. Aubrey puts as many miles on the Fat Boy as his work schedule allows and lovingly named it “Thelma” after his Aunt. Aubrey and “Thelma” won best paint in their first bike show at the Smokin’ HD Spring Rally this past May. “That was always his dream to have a bike that he could go to a show with and come home with a trophy” Aubrey said about his uncle Link. Aubrey continued to say, “And for me to take it to the first one and come back with a first place trophy, it’s amazing”. ubrey

A Texas rancher and a New Hampshire farmer are talking. “How big is your farm?” asks the Texas rancher. “Well, my farm is a little over 200 acres,” says the New Hampshire farmer. “Son,” bellows the Texas rancher, “my ranch is so big I can get in my truck on one end of it and it’ll take me three days to reach the other end of it.” “Uh huh,” says the New Hampshire farmer. “I had a truck like that once.”

A boy asked his mother, “Mom, why are wedding dresses white?” The mother looked at her son and replied, “Son, a white dress shows your friends and relatives that your bride is pure.” The son thanked his mom and went off to doublecheck with his father. “Dad, why are wedding dresses white?” The father looked at his son in surprise and said, “Son, all household appliances come in white.”

A biker is riding along a country lane, when a sparrow flies up in front of him.

The biker can’t do anything and hits the sparrow. As he looks in his rear-view mirror, he sees the sparrow lying in the road. Being the kind of guy he is, he stops, picks up the sparrow and takes it home and puts it in a cage, still in a coma. When the sparrow wakes up the following morning, he looks through the bars of the cage and says, “Damn! I must have killed the biker”.

A woman in a bar inadvertently let loose a loud fart just as a biker was approaching the side of the bar where she was seated.

Knowing that every person I the joint must have heard it, she desperately tried to save face by telling the scooter tramp, “Stop that!” “Sure thing, honey,” said the biker.

“Which way did it go?”

Scooter showed up late and cranky for the Daytona Rally. When he went to check into his motel room, he was told it had been given away. Never one to accept defeat, Scooter said, “Listen, if the Queen of England walked in, you’d find a room for her, wouldn’t you?” “Yes, we would,” said the clerk. “Fine,” said Scooter, “she’s not coming, so I’ll take her room.”

A Tennessee mountain woman went to the doctor and was told to go home and come back in a couple days with a specimen.

When she got home, she asked her husband, “What is a specimen?” He replied, “Danged if I know. Go next door and ask Edith, she’s a Registered Nurse.” The woman went next door and came back in about 20 minutes with her clothes all torn and with multiple cuts and bruises all over her face and body.

“What in the world happened?” asked her husband. “Danged if I know,” she replies. “I asked Edith what a specimen was and she told me to go piss in a bottle. I told her to go shit in a jug and then all hell broke loose.”

Three Bikers, a Honda Rider, a BMW Rider and a Harley Rider were sitting in a sauna.

Suddenly, there was a continuing beeping sound. The Honda Rider pressed his forearm and the beeping stopped. The others looked at him questioningly. “That was my pager, “he said, “I have a micro chip under the skin of my arm.” A few minutes later a phone rang. The BMW Rider lifted his palm to his ear. When he finished, he explained, “That was my mobile phone. I have a micro chip in my hand.” The Harley Rider felt decidedly low tech. Not to be outdone, he decided he had to do something just as impressive. He stepped out of the sauna and went to the bathroom. He returned with a piece of toilet paper hanging from his butt.

The others raised their eyebrows and stared at him. The Harley Rider finally declared…

“Well, will you look at that, I’m getting a fax!”

Pogo’s ol’ lady approached him as said, “there’s some guy at the front door who wants to see you about a bill you owe him.

He wouldn’t give me his name.” Pogo asked, “well, whatdefick does he look like?”

She answered, “he looks like you had damn well better pay him!”

A small zoo in Arkansas obtained a very rare species of gorilla. Within a few weeks the gorilla, a female, became very difficult to handle. Upon examination, the veterinarian determined the problem. The gorilla was in heat. To make matters worse, there was no male gorilla available. Thinking about the problem, the zookeeper thought of Bobby Lee Walton, a redneck part-time worker responsible for cleaning the animal cages. Bobby Lee, like most rednecks, had little sense but possessed ample ability to satisfy a female of any species. The zookeeper thought they might have a solution.

Bobby Lee was approached with a proposition. Would he be willing to mate with the gorilla for $500? Bobby Lee showed some interest but said he would have to think the matter over carefully. The following day he announced that he would accept the offer but only under four conditions. “First,” Bobby Lee said, “I ain’t gonna kiss her on the lips.” The zookeeper quickly agreed to this condition. “Second,” he said, “You can’t never tell no one about this.” The zookeeper quickly agreed. “Third,” Bobby Lee said, “I want all the children raised in my religion.” Once again, it was agreed.

“And last,” Bobby Lee said, “I’ll need another week to come up with the $500.”

This biker lady has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital. While on the operating table, she had a near death experience.

Seeing God, she asked, “Is my time up?”

God said, “No, you have another 43 years, 2 months, and 8 days to live.” Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a facelift, liposuction, and tummy tuck. Since she had so much more time to live, new roads to ride, she figured she might as well look even nicer. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While riding her motorcycle home, she was run into by a delivery truck and killed. Arriving in front of God, she demanded, “I thought you said I had another 40+ years? How come you didn’t pull me out of the path of that freakin’ truck?” God replied, “I didn’t recognize you.”
