The Season”, a phrase generally used to call attention to the holiday season, has its roots in the popular Christmas carol “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly” in the line “’Tis the season to be jolly.” So, checking out the Full Throttle Cruisin’ Calendar, the bikers of the Carolinas will be jolly, spreading the joy of the season as the toy runs, food drives, and holiday parties invite everyone’s participation. Just pick one out, ride, if you can, and enjoy the festivities. We sincerely hope everyone has a wonderful December and caps off 2021 in fine style. Their family friendly Hog-O-Ween allowed kids to show off their costumes and safely trick or treat. “Being involved in our community is what matters most” says Jennifer Pierce, Events & Marketing Coordinator for Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson. “We have been able to put on events and charity rides while keeping everyone safe. That shows the true kindness in people. “ This month, Santa is visiting Fort Bragg HarleyDavidson again! Pierce added “To help our children in need, on Saturday, December 4th, we are having a toy drive and photo opportunity with Santa.” If you miss your chance to see Santa then, you can enjoy a free breakfast with him on Saturday, December 18th. Story and photos by: Alan Dockery s I rode East down Highway 70, I stopped at the old dealership and thought about Don Tilley. It’s been seven years since the biker world lost a legend and hero. But so often we still talk about Don and how we miss him. Not just my racing buddies, everyone has a Don Tilley story they tell with a big smile. Western Carolina Bikers were blessed with an OK day to ride the last Saturday in October. Some of our old bikes run best when it’s a little chilly. I knew there would be hundreds of bikers at Tilley Harley-Davidson, Statesville, NC, breaking out their winter gear. There had been a couple small remembrance days when we went to the new dealership and rode a little. Last year, the family and staff had the first Don Tilley Memorial Ride and made it an annual event. I was glad to see a great turn out with hundreds of bikers parked all around the building. The morning started with a brisk ride, but it was warming fast, and folks were shedding layers. The ride was a leisurely trip around Iredell County. Up to Harmony, across through Union Grove and over to Linney’s Mill. That’s where my folks are from. Back at Tilley H-D, folks dug into barbecue from Ol’ Bob’s while listening to The Band of Ages. Those guys ain’t a regular band you will see often around here. They are old friends of the Tilley’s who play in other bands and get together to make good music once in a while. I liked them since they played traditional songs I can sing along to. Inside, I hung out for a bit listening to stories about Don and the race bikes. I answered folk’s questions too since I can talk about those race machines and their histories. Antique Harleys were on display. In the showroom is the first new HarleyDavidson that Don Tilley sold in 1972.

builder and tuner who put lots of riders in the winner’s circle. I remember getting to know him while covering Harley’s efforts in Superbike road racing with the VR-1000 and at the dragstrip. Don put Harleys on many different types of racetracks. In the 1950s and 1960s he raced stock cars, winning on the local tracks. He moved up to NASCAR’s Grand National Circuit running several races, including Daytona. Don even worked for Richard Petty before he and Robinette opened Tilley Harley-Davidson dealership in Statesville in 1972. Fast motorcycles made him a legend. His riders won lots of races and championships for many years. Occasionally, Don would roll some of his race bikes out for display at the dealership during events. It always brought a smile to my face to see guys checking out the race machines, like the famous Lucifer’s Hammer, and telling stories about watching them in action. This was another mellow day. Hang out at Tilley’s and tell stories about Don. We raised money for Purple Heart Homes USA. The organization, based in Statesville, is a non-profit, veterans-focused charity providing housing solutions for service-connected and aging veterans. Hey, we had winners of the poker run. Tom Overstreet had the best hand. Somehow, Tommy “Lunatic” Murphy had a worse hand than mine! It was great to see the Tilley family as it has grown over the years. Theirs is still a family run HarleyDavidson dealership. Generations of bikers have bought new

bikes and accessories from the Tilley family. They gave me the following statement about the Second Annual Don Tilley Memorial Poker Run: “It was a cold fall morning, but still we had a pretty good turnout for the Don Tilley Memorial Poker Run. It was a good ride. We heard from a lot of the riders how they enjoyed the loop through the country. And they dug into the great food from Ol’ Bob’s back at the shop. Hope folks enjoyed some damn good music from our friends The Band of Ages!” “We definitely want to thank everyone who came out and helped us raise some money, $4,237, for the Purple Heart homes.” “There are still some ride tee shirts for sale. Tom Overstreet had the best hand and donated the big H-D Rolling Cooler back for us to raffle off and give the money to Purple Heart Homes. So did Lunatic Tommy Murphy who had the worst hand and donated back the big Harley-Davidson rug. That says a lot about the bikers around here. I’m sure Don would be very proud of the ride and raising money for the Purple Heart Homes.”

Veterans Day Poker Run By: Pam Irvin

First Annual Veterans Day Poker Run hosted by the WNC Jeepers was Saturday, November 6th. All vehicles were invited to attend. It was a mere 28 degrees when we layered up and headed out for the poker run. There weren’t many motorcycles in attendance, I think 6 total. It’s difficult to plan a ride this time of the year in the mountains. It turned out to be a nice day after all, however I chose to draw all my cards at the starting point instead of riding to the other locations. The event took place at the Waynesville American Legion Post 47. There were numerous vendors set up selling items from homemade salsa, boiled peanuts, tumblers, jewelry, you name it, they had it. All proceeds from the poker run and vendor registration went to Mission 22 and the American Legion. Mission 22 is an organization that brings awareness to Veteran suicide. Live music was provided inside the American Legion by the Carolina Freight Shakers. BBQ was also served. I hated that it was so cold and not as many motorcycles made it, but it he

ended up being a great day and a good amount of money was raised for these organizations.

Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser With The Chosen Brothers MC By: Wally Wersching

I was at the Full Throttle Biker Church for an event, I saw a flyer on the bulletin board for an upcoming event on October 30th – the Chosen Brothers MC was holding a chili cook-off fundraiser for Noah’s House in Forest City, NC. The location was their clubhouse on Pea Ridge Road in Bostic, NC. Noah’s House is a residential foster home for children in Department of Social Services custody due to abuse and/or neglect. The home can care for up to six children, ages 6-18. House Parents provide daily care and supervision for each child in a safe, loving environment. They provide for the children’s medical, emotional, educational, and social needs. House Parents work with each child to help them set and achieve individual goals in a structured, family-style environment. I had to look up the location of their clubhouse because I’m not that familiar with the Bostic area. I learned that it was very close to the Washburn Store, so I decided to stop at the store to buy some Mountain Honey before visiting their clubhouse. I take a teaspoon of honey every morning so that my allergies don’t bother me. It works great! When I left Washburn Store, I turned left to go onto Andrews Mill Road. They just reopened it up again after reconstructing the bridge. I had never ridden on Andrews Mill Road before. It was very relaxing. When I came to Pea Ridge Road, I saw a sign for the Chosen Brothers clubhouse, and turned left to go down a gravel road. It was one of those gravel roads where there are two smooth narrow lanes of gravel, and the rest is grass. It wasn’t bad riding to the clubhouse. When I got to the clubhouse, I pulled out a stack of Full Throttle magazines to give to the members. Before I could go inside the building, a young man came up to me, and gave me hen

a hug. It was Cameron, a childhood friend of my son. I hadn’t seen him for years, and almost didn’t recognize him with his long beard. We had a very pleasant conversation as we walked into the clubhouse where I placed the magazines on the bar. The clubhouse was a very interesting place. There was a full bar on one side with a couch and flat-screen TV on the other. There was a pool table on one end. In another room, was the kitchen. The building itself was in the middle of a farmer’s field - a perfect clubhouse where the club could have loud parties without bothering their neighbors. As I walked through to the back of the clubhouse, I saw the chili cook-off competitors. There were four teams – all vying for the coveted Chosen Brothers plaque with the crossed wooden spoons that was given to the winning team. I talked with the club members for a while and realized that I had met many of them before at other local events. After talking with Cameron some more, I learned that he was joining another local club called the Royal Dragons MC. He said that many of the Dragon members were childhood friends of his from high school. I left before the chili was judged, so I don’t know which team won. It really doesn’t matter. All the money raised went for a great cause – Noah’s House in Forest City. I will watch the two club’s Facebook pages to see what they are planning next so that I can be there.

Blue Collar Cycle Company Celebrates 2nd Anniversary By: Lincoln Infield

McNeely is a cancer survivor and heart transplant survivor that fulfilled a dream two years ago and opened a motorcycle shop in Salisbury NC. Blue Collar Cycle Company is at 1017 Old West Innes Street Salisbury, NC and turns out an impressive amount of “previously enjoyed” motorcycle sales and features 2nd chance financing for those who need a little help getting back on two wheels. Blue Collar Cycle Company also features a full-service shop and some sweet Blue Collar apparel in house. On October 23rd, Brandon and his crew opened up the shop for their 2nd anniversary and to unveil the shop’s expansion. It was a beautiful day to ride, and West Innes St. was parked randon

The Grill was still going from where Brad Gandy and Scott Alley smoked 14 butts and were serving up some hot BBQ sandwiches with the fixings. Local minstrel, Marte Maney was strumming away at her guitar and keeping some good tunes in the air while everyone was digging in on the BBQ and shooting the breeze. Blue collar had just acquired the building next door across the driveway from their original building and had that opened for us to tour. The new shop area will expand the number of lifts and give the Blue Collar techs more room to service and customize your bike. Midway through the day, Brandon took a pause in the music to give away some raffle items and hand out some prizes. He had some awesome custom trophies built for the best bike on the lot bike show they had going on. Tom Taylor from Thomasville, NC took home top honors with his gorgeous 2000 HD FXSTS, and Recon and Paula took 2nd place with their 2005 Electra Glide that Combat Hero Bike Build had converted into a trike. Recon was pulling a custom-built trailer with an easy mount for his wheelchair. It was a pretty cool rig! Congrats y’all! As with just about everything Blue Collar does, there is a charity involved. Today’s event was to benefit one of Brandon’s favorite charities, Operation Decisive Victory. Operation Decisive Victory, founded in 2018, was established to bridge the gap in services available to our veteran community. His disability has not been approved and he is obviously unable to work so he needed the help of his family and fellow bikers. Jamie has been a big part of the biker community for years and has had an impact on many people’s lives. He and his wife are also foster parents, trying to make other people’s lives better. We organized an old school poker run for Jamie to give them a little financial relief, but honestly it was more about showing him love, friendship and moral support. And wow, did we succeed! The ride began and ended at Baxter’s Tavern in Greensboro, NC. Belinda Harris and the Baxter’s staff went above and beyond with their support and dedication to making the event successful. And it was a nice Carolina fall weekend for the American Motorcycle Racing Association’s 30th Annual Jim McClure All-Harley Nitro World Finals featuring the Ray Price Top Fuel Shootout. Y’all who dig nitromethane-fueled Harley race bikes got a large dose with almost 30 of the roaring flame belching machines there. They might make your eyes tear up and nose run as they rattle your chest. Bikers I know love a fall weekend at the Harley Drags. The camping crowd was there with campfires, hot food and cold beer to share with old buddies. The Saturday and Sunday ridein folks showed up to get at least a minimum annual requirement of hot rod Harleys roaring down the strip. I tell folks if you can only make one day, come for qualifying since everyone runs a few times. There are lots of races at The Rock, but the Harley Drags are special. Several of the machines that compete in the National Hot Rod Association Top Fuel Harley series were there. Jay Turner Racing is a Carolina team that for years dominated NHRA Top Fuel Harley and brings a few bikes to the strip. The quickest Nitro Harleys were at The Rock. And at the Harley Drags fans can walk the pits to check out the machines up close. As the sun sets on qualifying, the fans love watching fuel bikes shoot flames as they roar off into the darkness. Steve Earwood owns Rockingham Dragway and has been a hero to racing fans for a long time. He is credited with making sanctioned straight-line racing nationally known when in the 1970s and early 1980s he served as NHRA Media Relations Director. Steve received the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame Founders Award in 2016. He is a member of both the East Coast Drag Racing Hall of Fame and the NHRA Southeast Division Hall of Fame. I think he manages an average of 90 events a year at the facility When you see Steve at The Rock, please, thank him for giving us such a cool place to race. Chris Rasile, Greensboro, NC, brought a couple of old Ironhead Sportster drag bikes for display. These machines were real bad asses back in the 1970s and 80s. He was showing the first Pro Stock Harley to run a nine second pass. Chris has a few historic Harley drag bikes and sometimes takes them down the strip. He digs Harley race bikes and antiques and is an interesting guy to talk with at the track. AMRA Ray Price Top Fuel Shootout Fourteen Top Fuel Harleys were roaring at The Rock and going for the AMRA Ray Price Top Fuel Trophy. A few Carolina teams and others from nearby states gave the fans in the stands favorites to cheer for. There is a reason so many of the best Nitro Harley races are on the East Coast. That’s where so many are built and based. Tii Tharpe, Pfafftown, NC, qualified third but set his mind and machine to sending everyone else to the trailer. In the final round Tii, a two-time NHRA champ in 2018 and 2019, beat Ryan Perry, Ohio, who has had a great 2021 season. Tii ran one of the quickest passes of the weekend going down the strip in 6.350 seconds at 220.04 miles an hour. Jay Turner, Julian, NC, was thrilling his fans. Tracy Kile, Asheville, NC, had his Bad Apple bike there. Nitro Funny Bikes are very similar to Top Fuelers, but they don’t have transmissions. High gear only. Armon Furr, Orangeburg, SC, is a crowd favorite since his Dad Bill was a Nitro Harley star for many years. Armon finished runner-up in the class. Fans like Pro Fuel bikes. Especially when there are a dozen fixing to make passes down the strip. These are the small nitro bikes with 120 cubic inch engines, carburetors and single speed only. But those machines still fill the air with nitromethane, rattle your chest and put down 7.30’s all day. Sam White, Chapin, SC, was riding one of Johnny Vickers’ new bikes. He qualified it Number One with a 7.311 pass at 172.70 miles an hour. He was hard to beat on that October afternoon and won the class. Sam took out the reigning series champ, Jim Martin, Ill, in the final round. Jay Beasley, Winston Salem, NC, was riding Bobby Hoover’s pretty blue machine they call Miss Haley. John McConnell, Darlington, SC, was on an old Johnny bike. Kevin Campbell, Southern Pines, NC, qualified in the Pro Gas Class. Richard Boone, Mint Hill, NC, was running nines in Pro Mod. Mike Motto, Richlands, NC, dominates Outlaw Street these days. He took the class win running Eight Os. Baggers, or what us old guys call Dressers, are popular these days. Lots of them were roaring down the strip that weekend. Pro Dresser brought a nine-bike field to eliminations. Richard Stamey, Wilmington, NC, qualified second with a

9.60. Ryland Mason, Carolina Beach, NC, qualified third, was having a good day and finished runner-up. Chris Wood, Goldsboro, NC; Greg Quinn, Fountain, NC; Justin Demery, Rowland, NC, and Tyler Shearin, Roanoke Rapids, NC, also competed in Pro Dresser. Hard Charging Sportsman Racers There were lots of Sportsman racers at The Rock and that’s where so many of my buddies run. I know some of y’all love the smell of nitromethane. But I dig that sweet scent of VP Race Gas. These are the bikes I would most like to borrow for the weekend. The fans love the class too, watching riders try to hold down wheelies through the first couple gears as they make quick passes down the quarter mile on streetable bikes. Richard Stamey has been having a good time this summer racing Harley Baggers. He won the Street Dresser Class running an 11.743 at 111.99. I think he put on a wheelie show a time or two.

Freddie Frazier, Sanford, NC, made it to the semi-final round in Top Eliminator the quickest index class at 9.30 seconds. Gregory Hawes, Nakina Beach, NC, also ran in TE. Ryland Mason kept his qualify third and finish second streak going in Super Gas, the 9.90 class. Chris Wood, David Minton, Trinity, NC; Mike Best, Gary, NC, and Dan Ferguson, Harrisburg, NC, also competed in Super Gas. Bob Maier, Cleveland, NC, won the Super Pro Class running on a 10.30 index. Rick Medford, Cherokee, NC, also was in SP. Rick Medford was putting folks on the trailer and making some good passes in the 10.90 index Pro Eliminator Class. Then a final round bad light and 60-foot time had him racing for the runner up spot. Cody Hayworth, Concord, NC; Lamond Payne, Winston-Salem, NC, and Paul Watson, Greensboro, NC, competed in PE. Craig Burch, Chapel Hill, NC; Chris Phipps, Tabor City, NC; Brooke, McCabe, Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Richard Stamey competed in the 11.50 index Street Eliminator Class. has presented a $200 Big Check at the Sunday morning riders’ meeting. We recognize the Dial-In Eliminator Class rider who has the best reaction time during Saturday qualifying. Paul Watson from Lumbee Racing pitched in a hundred bucks to boost the pot. Maybe the check caused a few racers to push the tree and redlight. They wanted the money and to be in the photo. But it was Ted Farley from Michigan City, IN, who got the Big Check cutting a perfect 0.000 light. Racing in the Dial-In Eliminator Class is always exciting. With more than 40 racers ya gotta go lots of rounds to get the win. Tyler Shearin, Roanoke Rapids, NC, was wearing out the field and running his number. But he lost in the final round and was runner-up for the day. Guardians Of The Children Awareness Ride By: Wally Wersching he Guardians of the Children (GOC) is an organization of bikers who improve the quality of life in their community by educating the public and making them aware of the steps to take in order to recognize, prevent, and react responsibly to the reality of child abuse. The Gastonia Chapter has been in existence since 2010. During that time, they have been involved in many child abuse cases in the county. On October 23rd, the Gastonia Chapter of the GOC held their Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Ride. It started at the Full Throttle Powersports dealership in Lowell, NC. Registration was from 10:00AM to 11:00AM, for only $15.00. merged onto I-85 and exited at exit 22. Full Throttle Motorsports is on a small two-lane road next to the Indian dealership. When I arrived, I parked in front next to a Polaris Slingshot that was on display. Then I placed a stack of Carolinas Full Throttle magazines on the registration table. I started to walk around, and the first man I saw was “Dunk”. I knew him from years ago when he was one of the “Dixie Drifters”. We had a very pleasant conversation about his chaps. After “Dunk” had a motorcycle accident, the club had a Dice Run for him. I donated a pair of chaps to “Dunk”. He’s still wearing them when the weather requires it. While I was walking around talking to people, I noticed another Victory motorcycle. It was a beautiful Magnum bagger. After a while, I located the owner, and we had a very pleasant conversation about the pleasure of owning a Victory. He said that he had another Victory Vegas at home. This way he has the convenience of the bagger, and the fun of the sportier Vegas. As it got close to 11:00AM, everybody was called inside the dealership for the pre-ride meeting and prayer. The first part of the ride will have police vehicles blocking traffic at the intersections but after that, it would be up to the road-guards. Hand signals were reviewed along with group riding protocol. Then “Cuzz” said the prayer, after which everybody went to their bikes. I walked around so that I could get a good shot of the bikes riding out. I stood across the road to get them as they left the parking lot. As they roared past, some waved but most were concentrating on the ride. Riding in a group can be dangerous if the bikers don’t pay attention to what’s happening around them. After they were gone, I headed home. It was a fun way to spend a Saturday morning, and I hope to do it again soon.

Jaybird’s Custom Cycles Customer Appreciation Party

6th was a good day for a ride. North Carolina fall weather was in full stride, a little overcast, sixty-degree weather and a breeze. All the same, a great day for a ride down to Salisbury for Jaybird’s Custom Cycles Customer Appreciation Party. When asked how he got started working on motorcycles, Jay Richardson said that he “grew up building bikes with his dad, and it was pretty much downhill from there”. A few of the bikes he and his dad worked on together even ended up on the front cover of Easyrider magazine back in the mid-90’s. Jay took a break from motorcycles and served in the United States Army as a helicopter mechanic and crew chief from ’03-’09 before returning to two wheels, earning his motorcycle mechanics certification and working in handful of bike shops in North Carolina. On February 12, 2017, Jay “took the plunge” ovember

and opened his own shop, Jaybird’s Custom Cycles where Jay and his staff can handle all your bike’s service or custom upgrades from Shovelheads through Harley M8’s. Jay has built a reputation for reliability and boasts a $45 per hour labor rate which doesn’t hurt his client’s opinion of him either. The shop is located at 5865 South Main Street in Salisbury, NC, not far from I-85, with a small showroom for parts and a bike or two, two lifts in the back and no old school bike shop is complete without a shop dog, which Capone, Jay’s Italian Mastiff / Cane Corso fits the bill. Jay and his better half, Samantha, had a huge pot of chili and a burn barrel set up to keep folks warm while we were hanging out. Kelsey Hurley was setup next to the building and kept everyone tapping their toes, while she sang and played songs all day. She kept the tunes coming and man, she can really sing. I snagged some chili that Samantha’s son, Emmett and Jaybird’s mechanic, Ted, were serving up and hung out with the McGrath Law Firm team that was set up handing out swag. Bikes were coming and going all day and it wasn’t long before the lot was full, and the party was really cranking. Seth, another house mechanic and Katie were set up selling 50/50 tickets and raffle tickets. Jay had collected some sweet merch for raffle prizes. Goodies from Snap-On tools, Custom Dynamics, Harley-Davidson and more were bundled into a handful of raffle prizes that got given away around 4pm. Jay had a couple of the kids that were hangin’ out pull the raffle tickets and thanks

to them, I grabbed a great prize pack along with a few other folks. Ray Bolen walked away with a cool $40 in the 50/50 raffle. We hung around the fire and shot the breeze for a while longer and then hit the road. It was a great day with some great folks. Jay and his team run tight shop and make sure that riders in the area keep on the road. Jaybird’s Custom Cycles is a sure shot if you need some repair work or upgrades done to your Harley-Davidson. 8th Annual Oconee County Toys for Tots Toy Run By: Bill Gallaway n Sunday, October 24th at 1:00 p.m. the bikes started lining up outside the Central, SC Walmart for the 8th Annual ABATE of Oconee County SC Christmas Toy Run. This Toy Run kicked off the Holiday Season. The day was a beautiful sunny mild day with temperatures in the mid-70s. The Run rally started at 2:00 p.m. and by that time, there were over 85 motorcycle riders lined up with their bikes overflowing with toys. There was a trailer to put large toys in such as bicycles and larger boxes. There were many familiar faces and a lot of new riders which is good to see. There were many folks hanging out and visiting with old friends in the staging area of the parking lot which was full of bikes, trucks, Jeeps, and support vehicles along with police and fire. The ride left the Walmart parking lot at 2:00 p.m. with an escort by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Dept and other jurisdictions. They traveled thru Central, Clemson, and Seneca until arriving at their destination the West Union Fire Station. There were many cars that pulled over to respect the group of riders as they rode directly to the finish. You could hear the roar of the thundering motorcycles as they approached. Those that did not ride were in cages and followed the bikes that were carrying toys for the under-privileged children of Oconee and some

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Family Cycles Celebrates 14 Years

Mark Cockerton of Family Cycles, his love of 2 wheels started at 12 years old with a 1970’s model TV 200 Lambretta scooter. “It was cool, it was black with gold lettering on it, and it was just cool.” He and his brother were gifted the scooter as a ‘If you can get it started you can have it’ type deal. Mark admits that his dad most likely did the majority of the work, but they got the Lambretta running, and the rest is history. Mark added, “I couldn’t believe you could ride something without peddling it. It was the greatest feeling in the world!” Mark has been turning wrenches ever since and worked as a mechanic at Family Cycles in Hamlet, NC for 3 years before the opportunity arose to buy the business in 2007. Mark has continued servicing the recreation vehicles of Richmond County for 14 years with the help of his son, Alex, making the name Family Cycles ring true. They work on just about anything on two wheels from vintage to modern motorcycles and even scooters. “People think I’m nuts, I love Shovelheads and Scooters…I just have a passion for it.” Mark says, “I don’t care if you ride a Vespa, s for

Honda or Ducati, if you ride, you are Ok in my book.” On October 23, Mark and his Family Cycles crew celebrated their 14th year servicing the two-wheel community of Richmond County by throwing a party at The Hide-A-Way Tavern in Rockingham, NC. Hide-A-Way owner Chris Sachs and Mark are pillars in their riding community and are often working together on or are attending the same events in the area, so party location was an easy choice. Bad Habit was rocking the outside stage with all the hits from AC/DC, Judas Priest and other rock legends. There was no shortage of energy, lead guitarist was on a wireless hookup and was all over the place, bringing the rock to the audience. In between sets, Alex gave away a table of raffle prizes and announced other goings on of the evening. As with most events at the Hide-A-Way, there was one hell of a spread of food. Piles of BBQ, bacon wrapped venison, bacon wrapped mushrooms and more. It was tough to stay away from the chow table! Adding to the merriment was the fact that it was Mark’s wife, Angela’s, birthday. There were balloons and cake to help mark the occasion and we all sang to wish her a happy birthday.

Mark had brought out a scooter for the slow race event, in which riders had to mount up, and take the longest amount of time to circle two barrels and get across the finish line. Being as there were no real guidelines of the exact path you had to take to the barrels, it wasn’t long before participants were showing their creativity. Chris even leaned up on the fence while being fed a drink before finishing his run. Mark and his family being cigar aficionados, they included a “longest ash competition”. Participants had 30 minutes to suck down a stogey and see who could end up with the longest ash. When the smoke cleared, Christi Sheppard had prevailed and won a cool Open Road motorcycle painting for her trouble. The band kept rocking and there was plenty of eating, drinking and tire kicking going on. It was a great evening and celebration. Congrats to Mark and his family on their business of servicing the two-wheel community of Richmond County for the last 14 years. “I appreciate my family, ya know, my son works for me every day and they’ve all been very supportive over the years. It’s not been easy ya know. We are just appreciative of the people in the community that have trusted us to work on their motorcycles.” Mark concluded. Bikes and participants young and old were decked out in Halloween attire. There was Trunk or Treat, which was set up in motorcycle tour packs and saddle bags. Vendors were on hand as well as the Winston-Salem H.O.G chapter. Anthony and his crew had the music pumping outside. Food was also available, barbecue plates for ten dollars. There was also a ride that left at 11am. And inside was a whole table of raffle items where five dollars got you seven tickets. Along with a 50/50 draw with all the proceeds going to the Pretty in Pink Foundation for Breast Cancer. A separate raffle for an autographed helmet from Carolina Panthers linebacker, Luke Kuechly was held. All in all, over eleven hundred dollars was raised during the event. And as always, the Smokin’ staff was dressed up for Halloween and you could vote for the best costume.

15th Annual You Are Not Forgotten Veterans Rally

November 7th was a beautiful sunny mild fall afternoon with temperatures in the mid-70s. At around 1:00 P.M. the bikes started arriving at the R.M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson SC for the 15th Annual You Are Not Forgotten Veterans Rally. This year, there was no ride associated with the event so everyone came in small groups or alone with their bags and boxes of needed items for the residents. The event started at noon and by that time there were already hundreds of bikes parked outside the building when I arrived. As in the past years, there were food vendors and support T-shirts for sale along with the ever-present Biker Attorney and other groups of biker interest. In the row I parked in I counted 85 bikes, so I came up with a rough

estimate of somewhere around 400 bikes. There was a small bus to put the donations in, where they received bags and boxes. There were some familiar faces among the crowd. There were many folks hanging out and visiting with old friends in the vendor area. The parking lot was now full of bikes. The sky divers arrived on the drop site at just after 2:00 pm. There were 4 jumpers, the last one bringing the American Flag. Everyone showed their respect while the National Anthem was sung and while the volley of cannon fire was performed to respect those who have served their country for our freedom and those in attendance and residing at The RM Campbell Retirement Home. Many thanks to Teufelshunde MC who support and coordinate this event. It would not happen without them. Due to their efforts, many Veterans were remembered. As always, thank our Veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Miss Donna was married to one of the CCIB members. After she passed away, they honor her memory by holding a poker run on her birthday for her favorite charity. This year’s event was held at the CCIB Clubhouse on Washburn Switch Road in Shelby, NC. The registration started at 12:00PM with the first bike out at 1:00PM, and the last bike in at 5:00PM. Springs, NC. The last stop was back at the CCIB clubhouse where there would be hot dogs with all the fixin’s. Later, at 7:00PM, the band “Stone Mule” would be rockin’ on the bandstand behind the clubhouse. All the proceeds go to the Hospice of Rutherford County in loving memory of Donna Howard. I arrived at about 12:15PM after riding back roads to the clubhouse. It was a beautiful warm afternoon for mid-October with temps in the 80’s. When I arrived, there were already quite a few bikes parked in front of the clubhouse. I walked in and placed a stack of Full Throttle magazines on the bar for all to share. They were glad to see the article about the CCIB Jace Man Run on page 52. Later, “Grumpy” walked into the bar, and we talked for a long time. He’s a very interesting person. We have a lot in common. We went onto the back porch to visit for a while with other CCIB members. Afterwards, I walked outside to see “Grumpy” and “Pegleg” leave to go to the Windjammers clubhouse. There must be a CCIB club member at every stop to validate the drawing of the cards. As we all waited for the start of the ride, I talked with “Radar”. He and I worked together a few lifetimes ago. We talked about some of the things that happened after I was laidoff. “Radar” has an excellent memory about those things. I talked with “Snake” for a few minutes. He didn’t ride his bike because his back tire was flat. He had a new tire mounted, and it went flat so he took it back to the shop to be fixed. When everybody left, he stayed behind to cook the hot dogs for their return meal. Then all were called together for a few words. I walked across the road to get pictures of the group when they left. The sun was in the right place to take pictures too. The command to start the bikes was given, and the silence of the afternoon was changed to the roar of Harley-Davidsons. It only took a few minutes for the group to leave. A few stayed back for the next group to leave within the hour. Individuals could leave whenever they wanted. They didn’t have to go in a group. I said good-by to all who stayed behind and headed home. Later, I learned that the CCIB donated $3,000 to the Hospice of Rutherford County as a result of the day’s events. I’m always amazed at the biker community’s big hearts when there are people in need.

Charlotte CBA Swap Meet will be over with, and planning for the next one begun. I really enjoy doing the Swap Meet because you get to see friends you only see twice a year. Kind of sad this time, we’ll be missing a great friend, Terry Brown, who was always there to meet you and say hello in the Bike Show Building, but he’ll be there in spirit. Gone but never forgotten. You’ll see many different patches and walks of life, (but they’re all God’s children), some real, some just playing biker. We still do a church service every Sunday Morning in the Bike Show Building. Many of our Christian friends come to support us and many just stay at their table. But you know each to their own, we’re there doing what the Lord told us to do. Proverbs 12: 12-16 12: The wicked covet the catch of evil men, But the root of the righteous yields the fruit. 13: The wicked is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, But the righteous will come through trouble. 14: A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth. And the recompense of a man’s hand will be rendered to him. 15: The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise. 16: A fool’s wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame.

Have you ever thought about being conceited? Here are some of the things the Bible says about conceited people. 1) They think they’re too good to go out and minister or talk to someone. 2) They’re so wise in themselves, you can’t teach them anything because they think they know everything. 3) They don’t want to go out of their way, because it doesn’t suit them. 4) This is from God, but we think we did it. If you think you’re so strong and can do everything then why aren’t you, instead of trying to get someone else to do it? Only by the Lord do you know anything. 5) Conceited people always put themselves first. You need to always glorify God before yourself. 6) Conceited people think their way is always better no matter what. If you’re going to boast and make a show of it, you best be telling what God has done for you. Just remember, your ministry or group (you think) is better than the other, it’s the way you handle it. Renew your mine in the love of Jesus Christ. Don’t matter how great you are, it’s how great God is. If you’re taking the credit, you failed God.

Ride In Peace Nancy (Ni’Que) Haywood Heafner February 11, 1955-October 29, 2021

Submitted By: Rick Nail i’Que Heafner passed away on October 29, 2021. Myra and I, along with several hundred others, attended the memorial service and the celebration of life for Ni’Que. Her husband, Mike, really showed his love for Ni’Que in things he had done at the celebration. He had a wreath made for her shaped like a lighthouse and an ice sculpture which read, “Your wings were ready, but our hearts were not”. Speakers at the service talked of the love Ni’Que and Mike had for each other and how much of a “Mother Hen’ Ni’Que was and how much she had given to the community. Mike wrote the following fitting obituary: Ni’Que Heafner passed away Friday, October 29, 2021, after a brief illness. She was born February 11, 1955, in Mecklenburg County. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lena McMurray Haywood, father Wiley Haywood, and sister Sandra Haywood Nivens. Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at 4:00 pm in Monroe, NC. A reception and celebration of life followed the Memorial Service at Iron Horse Motorcycles. Nancy “Ni’Que” is survived by her husband, Charles Michael Heafner; nephew Brian Nivens; niece Shannon Wiesner; and the whole Heafner family who loved her dearly and she called them her brothers and sisters. She especially loved the whole gang at Iron Horse Motorcycles and always looked forward to riding with the Kyle Petty Charity Ride family. Ni’Que was the pillar and cornerstone at Iron Horse Motorcycles for over 35 years. She divided her time between working at the shop and the farm in Monroe, NC and the water at Lake Tillery in Norwood, NC. She spent her younger years in Matthews and Carolina Beach where she learned to surf, and in California where she worked for Jessica McClintock who created the famous clothing line, Gunne Sax. She was a cheerleader with the Carolina Storm in Charlotte. Ni’Que loved animals, having many dogs, cats, a pet Macaw, and even a snake. Ni’Que loved to cook and was very excellent at cre-

ating many mouth-watering dishes. Her vegetable soup was especially famous. She said food the second most important part in a relationship, and that love is the first. She collected lighthouses and could tell you by looking at one, where in the world it stood. Ni’Que had a remarkable memory. She could recall dates and events that occurred even 30 years ago like it was yesterday. She could hear a song and tell you who sang it and the title. She loved music. Ni’Que loved to ride motorcycles, logging over half a million miles on the back with her husband Mike. They rode every one of those rides over 48 states, usually for a fund raiser for the Kyle Petty Charity Ride or the Hometown Heroes. She never missed an opportunity to ride. She never complained about riding even in rain, two forest fires, snow, sleet, hail, and even riding beside a tornado outside of Dodge City, Kansas once. Ni’Que loved to travel; she took many trips and especially loved sailing in the British Virgin Islands, where she prided on sailing a sailboat faster than Mike. Mike said she was like the Dale Earnhardt of sailing; both could see the wind. She also loved many theme ship cruises to the Caribbean, trips to Japan and China to meet the administration of Honda Motors Corporation. She loved NASCAR and went to countless races, visiting most of the NASCAR tracks in the US. Ni’Que loved helping people. She was an incredible judge of people and had a heart of gold. She always found a way to make people feel happy and to feel loved. She loved sunsets and took many photos of them. She especially enjoyed rainbows after the storm. She loved seeing storms with lighthouses in the distance and would comment “it was God’s pastel painting”. She was a deeply religious person and practiced right from wrong all her life. Ni’Que had two pet peeves—she would never leave a bed unmade, and she treated a broken fingernail as if it was the end of the world. Mike would tell her she had the most beautiful hair to change her focus. Ni’Que will be missed by many. Ride In Peace Ni’Que.

November 13th was a beautiful, sunny, mild, fall afternoon with temperatures in the med 60’s. It was KSU at 9:15 for me and a fellow rider. Others had been on the road for hours depending on where they came from. I know some came from Greer, Easley, Greenville, Central and Columbia SC. At around 10:15, we met up at the Stop-A-Minute in Pelzer, SC for fuel and a much-needed break. This year, the leaf colors were the best. I can’t remember last year’s ride, maybe there wasn’t one due to Covid. Anyway, this was a great weekend to be out riding. There were many bikes on the roads because you just had to get out. The ride was planned to go to Abbeville, SC. Our route took us through Easley, Pelzer, Ware Place, Donald’s, Honea Path, Belton, Anderson, Level Land and Clemson. The traffic was heavy in the Easley and Clemson areas due to the Clemson Tigers Game, (which they won). It seemed like we were the only ones traveling away from Clemson heading east. Traffic was a solid line for miles heading west to the stadium. Upon our arrival in Abbeville, we found a large enough area for all our bikes, and it was a short walk to our restaurant of choice. There are many restaurants in town and the one we chose was the Village Grill. We were not disappointed. We had great service and food. The restaurant is larger than it looks from the outside, so we had one large table for all of us. If we ride to Abbeville again, I would probably be going back to try another of their specials. Ride in Peace John Terry Brown October 16, 1944 -- September 21, 2021

Rock Hill, S.C. and was a lifelong resident of Pineville, N.C. Terry passed away September 21, with his wife, Debby, by his side. Terry was another victim of this Damn Covid 19. Terry was a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle fanatic and collector, with antique Servi-Cars his main passion. He was a lifetime member of the Concerned Bikers Association (CBA), serving as President of the Charlotte chapter for several years. He was also the Bike Show Director of the CBA Swap Meet and Bike Show for over 30 years and is now Bike Show Director Emeritus. Terry and his family helped me, and my family put on the June Jam and October Jam Bike Shows and Swap Meet for 17 years. Terry was a member of the Boozefighters M/C, Chapter 9 for 16 years, serving as Secretary and Treasurer. Mention Moody, AL to a Boozefighter. The stories will flow. He was a founding member of the Catawba Valley Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. He loved all his motorcycle brothers, some of whom we were friends with for more than 50 years. Earlier in life, Terry ran the Columbus Oil Station in Pineville for years, where he also operated a motorcycle painting business. That corner at the red light in Pineville was always full of motorcycle activity and was the backdrop of many of the stories he loved to tell. Several of his motorcycle paint jobs were featured in Easy Rider Magazine –a great source of professional pride for Terry. He later became a service technician for Precision Beverage, retiring after nearly 20 years. Terry’s family was his priority. He liked to act like a hard ass on the outside, but he was a big-ole teddy bear on the inside who wholeheartedly loved his family. Always taking some of his grandkids with him to run his errands, making sure they had family lunch once a week, and no matter how busy he was, he always had time to sit and tell stories of “the good old days.” Terry was known for his fierce loyalty and directness that left no questions about where people stood with him. His favorite spot was the shop in his backyard where friends and family were always welcome. Terry was a man of principles. As proof of this, once while he was riding with his boss’s son in Asheville, the son did or said something that Terry didn’t like so—Terry got out of the van and hitch hiked back to Pineville. Luckily, an older couple picked up Terry and brought him right to his house in Pineville. erry was born in

Terry’s interests didn’t stop with family and motorcycles. He was an avid history buff. He was very knowledgeable with his history and loved to stir up “discussions” particularly about the Civil War. All his Yankee friends have been subjected to Terry’s facts and opinions. He had a very loyal bond with his Southern Roots. Terry also loved to visit old cemeteries. He would gather the family and say “Let’s go see this cemetery I ran across while riding last week. Everybody went. Terry and Debby celebrated their 50’th wedding anniversary in February. They had completely different interests but made sure they shared their interests with each other. Since Debby retired, they have been taking day trips to the mountains to view waterfalls and small towns and had been looking forward to many more. They had a marriage built on love, strong trust, and devotion to one another. Terry is survived by Debby, his wife of 50 years, their children, grandkids, great grandkids, a sister, a niece, and a nephew. We all had one more ride with Terry all around Pineville and escorted him to the cemetery, where he was buried with the ashes of his beloved German Shepherd, Shelby, in the casket with him. I’m gonna miss my buddy terribly. I just don’t believe that he is gone. The CBA Bike Show won’t be the same without Terry Brown. Ride in Peace, Brother! Gone, but NEVER FORGOTTEN!!!

The 49th Annual Charlotte CBA Swap Meet

Rowan County Fairgrounds for the Charlotte CBA Swap Meet. Some come to snag a great deal on bike parts for that build they’ve been working on, others are there to show off their ride in the bike show and still, yet some are just there to have a good time. A few of us were there for all the above! Whatever the case may be, The Charlotte CBA Swap Meet was the place to be on November 13-14. It was an absolutely beautiful day, for November. I mean, it wasn’t a summer day, but it could have been a heck of a lot worse. There were a ton of vendors set up in the inside and outside portions of the fairground. Had to be a dozen more vendors than last year. It was like old times. There was a great crowd of pickers going around digging out old crusty parts, sorting through bins and speculating whether the part they were looking at was the one they needed. You can seriously find just about anything you are looking for. I saw multiple engines, rolling chassis, frames, wheels, all kinds of handlebars and everything in between. Seriously, bring some cash and you can get a great project bike going. As always, there are a ton of local celebrities walking around. Inside the bike show building Dano, Gina and Mike of South Main Customs were set up with some bikes for sale. Dano is one of the finest wrenches in the south and was a co-sponsor of the CBA Swap Meet this year along with Blue Collar Cycle Company. Brandon, Brint, Trevor and Beavis had Blue Collar booths set up inside, outside and were making rounds hanging out! Jim Blair of Jim’s Motor Service is a regular at the swap meet, I saw him pass by a few times, but never got a chance to see what he was into! It was a big day for the Karney Law Firm as it was the debut of their 2022 wall calendar. Bob Karney and Sean Clayton were on hand to take in the sights and hand out the new calendars. I even saw Kary Blaylock of Pandemonium Performance hanging around. wice a year we gather at the

Shannon and Dexter Rights were manning the Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group booth and they brought Tyler Stiles’ downhill barbie car for that afternoon’s main event, the Rumble In Rowan. But we will get to that in a minute. The Mechanized Calvary had a special treat for everyone that day. They brought three Civil War style cannons out and were gonna fire those suckers off around 3pm. As the Calvary was getting the cannons ready, Rick Nail, the CBA Swap Meet Director took a moment to call out the names of a number of our recently lost brothers. The names were followed by the National Anthem and then we were on to the cannons. Man! That was cool. Two, three cannon volleys rang out and filled the air with smoke rings and cheers from the crowd. It was awesome. Now the Cannons were also the unofficial starting gun for the downhill barbie car racing, this year, dubbed the Rumble in Rowan. The guys at the CBA rigged an intimidatingly tall three car hauling trailer on the downhill section of

the fairgrounds for this year’s downhill race. This year the “main event” at the Rumble In Rowan was a head-to-head race between McGrath Attorney Tyler Stiles and myself. You may remember that Tyler beat me in the Hoffzilla pork chop sandwich eating competition at the 2020 Spring Swap Meet. Ever since then, Tyler and I have been in competition. Some of which I have lost and some of which he has won. Yeah, you read that right. But today I was determined to put points on the board for team Full Throttle Magazine. The first round, there was mishap at the starting line, but the second round had a successful launch. I had Tyler by at least 4 barbie car lengths down the ramp and the first hill, but it wasn’t to be, and Tyler passed me before the finish line. A few others braved the downhill races including Mike Pousada who notched a victory for South Main Customs. I expect this event to grow in the coming years and I know that Team Full Throttle Magazine will rebuild and come back even stronger next year. The event then moved under the live music tent where the band had been jamming out all day long. These guys were nailing some good old bluesy rock and roll and making it look easy. They took a break from the stage for a fan favorite wet tshirt contest that had some real “talent” on stage. These ladies danced and frolicked across the stage while Lloyd, probably the best wet t-shirt emcee in the business, kept the crowd and the ladies going. Finally, it was up to the crowd to decide who was taking home the prize money. Rebecca, Nina and Brittney were the finalists, but I consider us to all be winners in this

contest. While this was the final planned activity of the day the Swap meet rolls on into the evening and for those who are camped out on the grounds, the party goes late into the night. Sunday is a low-key day at the swap meet. There are still vendors and great deals to be had, but the main event of the day is the Bike Show. Having just lost the bike show director, Terry Brown, earlier this year the bike show had a different feel. Bubba Morgan was Terry’s apprentice, and he took up the role this year and did a fine job. A want for a simple, old school style motorcycle event. A camping event with bike games, a bike show, all my friends and George Thorogood headlining the act. No, I’m no kidding. Although I was unable to secure George for the event due to funding disadvantages, Mayhem was certainly coming. As with the beginning of most things the planning stages are exciting, full of grand ideas, and semi low on stress. Ideas were shared at the Full Throttle HQ; discussions were had around The Long Road Table at The Rebel Spirit and fears were shared in private at home. Things got a little more real when Kary Blaylock of Pandemonium Performance Custom Cycles and I rode around to look at a few different locations before settling on the original location for the field of Mayhem, on Zimmerman Road in Midway. Another quick phone call to my pal Angelo Greco and all of a sudden, I had 3 bands, a generator, a couple food trucks and a righthand man. Then the real planning began, it was February 2021, so we had plenty of time, but that time flew by and the next Mayhem Host, Lyn Shannon

thing I knew, it was September and that semi low stress level had elevated, slightly. Only days before the October magazine went to press, the original Field Of Mayhem was deemed too small for the response we were receiving. Mayhem was aptly named. It was then that an old friend pulled me directly out of the fire. Lyn Shannon used to run the Lone Wolf Tavern in Winston-Salem and hosted the Fear of February party for us in 2008. Lyn offered for us to come look at her property, also on Zimmerman Rd. It didn’t take but one look for me to know that this is where the Mayhem In Midway was supposed to be from the start. Friday October 15 Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers Kick-Off Keg Party Friday morning the vendors started rolling in early and the Field of Mayhem came alive. Although the gates weren’t officially open til later in the day, we already had folks riding to in set up their camping spots and counting down the hours til the kickoff party began. Pop Up tents went up, tables were laid out and we had some tunes pumping through the air. We had a great group of vendors at Mayhem including Pandemonium Performance Custom Cycles, McGrath Law Firm, The Rebel Spirit, CBA /ABATE of NC, Look Twice Save A Life, Chickie’s Knives, Biker Gear & More, Wrenn’s Sterling, Military Missions In Action, Biker Trash Nation!, FME Sunglasses, Clemmons Motorcycles, Tribute To The Troops, Big City Thunder, Lucky 13 Engraving, Blue Collar Cycle Company, The Chillbillies, Seth Williams Art, Jaybird’s Custom Cycles, Universal Customs Pinstriping, Bikers Rally Against Bullying, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson and Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers.

a little biker ingenuity. Dude had that best camping spot in the yard, 20 feet from the fire with his bike and a keg right outside the tent. That keg stayed in that spot til Sunday as a tribute to those who came to party. Saturday, October 16 The Day Of Mayhem

Shot Thru The Heart Rocking The Stage

When five o’clock hit, it was time to let the Mayhem begin, we cranked up the tunes and tapped a keg. Thank God that my Full Throttle Crew consisting of Maggie (wife), Lucas (Brother), and Molly (mom) were there to run the gate cause the bikes started pouring in. It got so crazy that we had some friends dive in and help, Thanks Bob and Melinda! Since we didn’t have any official events other than the Karney Law Firm Kick Off Keg Party we let everyone park in the field of Mayhem and it wasn’t long til we were parked full, and we were tapping the second keg! By the time the second keg was ¾ gone the mid October evening was set in and the temps had dropped to the mid 50’s. The party shifted to a bonfire party about 100yards from the keg. The fire was raging and so was the party. Lynn had stacked up a ton of cedar logs and willing fire tenders kept the piling them on the fire. The bonfire got renamed the “porta-fire” due to its proximity to the shitters, which was a blessing and a curse by the end of the weekend. The Porta-Fire party went late into the night and involved a ton of dirt burnouts that stoked the fire and brought cheers from those gathered around. It was just like it shoulda been, just biker stuff. Hanging around the fire with motorcycles and minibikes riding around, music rolling through the air and a hell of a lot of fun that no one really remembers the next day. The last keg even made it down to the porta fire party on the back of shovelhead Super Glide with a few bungee cords and

Saturday dawned WAY too early partly because the Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers Kick-Off Keg Party had just barely ended and because of some unholy rooster who doesn’t know what dawn looks like any more than a millennial teenager. Man… it was a bit rough, but it was the calm before the storm. If last night’s turnout was any indication of how the main party day was gonna be, we were in for one hell of a party. I drained a huge cup of coffee and got ready for a huge day of events. The last few vendors joined us early on Saturday morning and the gates opened at 10am to let a line of motorcycles in that didn’t end until past 6pm that evening. As with any party, we had a schedule, that is kinda for looks and is more of a suggestion than anything else, but we tried to stick to it as best as possible. It went a little something like this.

Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers Sound Stage The Field of Mayhem was filing up quick and the Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers Sound Stage was set up and ready to go. After a few announcements, Rick Thomas, the Human Jukebox kicked the rally off by rocking his version of the National Anthem. Cheers went up and Rick lit into his set. Rick is the Human Jukebox ‘cause he can play it all. He laced an hour of classic rock songs while we geared up for the events of the day. The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers Sound Stage was a constant attention spot for random announcements and the bands that we scheduled the event around. Rick taking the early spot and then directly following the Ms. Mayhem Contest (which we will get to in a minute here) Sunsett Strip kicked the evening into shape. Sunsett Strip brings you all your favorite 90’s hair metal songs from Kiss, Poison, Motley Crew, Ratt, Def Leopard, Guns & Roses and more. All the way down to shredding the solos, these guys were awesome! The night finished out with Shot Thru The Heart – The Bon Jovi Experience. They looked the part and had the sound just right. The temps got down low that night but Shot Thru The Heart kept

Carly Dukes Goodwill took home Best Chopper with her ’96 H-D Sportster 1200, Best Cruiser went to Steve Stirewalt’s “Super Chrome Trike”, Scott Bowman’s ’16 H-D Road Glide took the Best Bagger award, Best Pre-90’s award went to Mike McCloud’s cherry ’47 H-D Knucklehead and Michelle Lee snagged Best Sport Bike with her 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400. They all went home $100 from Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group and with awesome custom trophies from The Rebel Spirit. Now the crowd got quiet in anticipation of the Best In Show Winner. You can’t have a bike rally without a bike show. Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group stepped up to the task as one of our first sponsors. We wanted to make this a good show, so there was NO entry fee and the possibility of taking home some cold hard cash! There was $1000 in total for the cash prizes, $500 for best in show, and $100 for each of the class winners. But wait! That’s not all! We commissioned our super talented friends Zach and Kristin Shipwash of The Rebel Spirit to build us some awesome custom trophies and they knocked it out of the park. Now you could register your bike as early as 10am on Saturday with awards being handed out around 4:30pm. The bikes are all judged individually with a 10-point scale in different categories making judging pretty simple. Well, it was a good thing that we started early with registration because we ended up with 50+ motorcycles in the bike show! We had to continuously expand the Bike Show parking to accommodate the incoming contestants! Shannon Rights, the NC events coordinator for Tom McGrath’s Law Firm had her hands full all day long! year’s bike games were sponsored by Smokin’ Harley-Davidson who had a sweet setup on the Field of Mayhem. Smokin’ brought $500 in cash prizes to be handed out to the winners of the bike games. John and Tina Luther of Wolf Mountain Biker Entertainment officiated the games and made sure to keep it rolling. John does a hell of a job getting the crowd and rider into the games. Slow Race, Pick Em Up and Put Em Down, Weenie Bite were a blast. It was awesome to see everyone getting it done and there was some stiff competition. The Slow race went round for round and Weenie Bite, well who doesn’t love that. Wolf Mountain does the weenie bite the right way and coats the weenie in mayonnaise. The first one to slide on some drastically oversized pants and shirt, get through the window, on your bike and get away wins. You shoulda seen these guys (and gals) diving through the makeshift window and peddling away on the provided bicycles. Poke Her & Run was also a hit as a people game. It’s true pride when you and your other half can get that toilet paper roll on the plunger without using your hands. There were some interesting techniques, some worked, some were just entertaining! Winners were handed cold hard cash for their efforts thanks to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson!

It’s Alabama’s World, We’re Just Living In It

We were honored this year that Bob Karney held his 10th Annual Bulldog Hero Awards ceremony at Mayhem In Midway. We actually set the time for this event and built the rest of the day around it. The NC/SC motorcycle community nominated twenty-two local bikers who make a significant impact in their community. The nominees and their charitable bios were posted on Karneylaw.com for the public to vote on. The winner would be crowned The Bulldog Hero of the Year and join a prestigious ring of previous “Bulldogs” being honored by the original Bulldog, Bob Karney. At 3pm the twenty-two nominees were called to the Karney Law Firm sound stage to find out who would be this year’s Bulldog. Bob and Ginger Karney along with Sean Clayton were on stage to introduce

Now that the Field of Mayhem bike games area had been cleared a rowdy bunch of bikers rolled in to participate in an impromptu, loud pipes warm up session. Lead by Mayhem’s first resident “Alabama”, a 20-minute-long ear piercing, hair raising, cuss evoking revv session started. Just when you thought it was gonna die down enough for the contest to ensue, Alabama, lounging headlong on his Road King, slurping Natty Light, would reach back and twist the wick some more, encouraging the sound off to continue. Eileen Sousley of Big City Thunder, the leader

in motorcycle exhaust technology, was the sponsor of this ear bleeding event. Big City Thunder manufactures baffles for your motorcycle to increase back pressure, improve performance and make your pipes sound better. They even make them to quiet your motorcycle, but no one in this contest had that need. One by one, twenty-three contestants toed the line and revved up their engines (again) while we used a handheld decibel meter to record their pipe power. When it came down to it, we had a tie and Joseph Swain and Jarod Hess tied for 1st place at 131.5 decibels, and a crowd-judged sound off gave Jarod the victory. Jarod was awarded $150, Joseph $100, and Alabama, took 3rd place at 131.4 decibels, but passed out on his bike and was unable to claim his $50 winnings for quite some time.

Much to the neighborhood’s dismay, the noise was nowhere close to being over and the Mayhem continued to the Burn Out Contest. Blue Collar Cycle Company put up $300 and fresh tires to the top three burnout contestants. Zach and Kristin Shipwash from The Rebel Spirit brought out their world-famous mobile burnout pit to the center of the Field of Mayhem. We proceeded to cloud up the township of Midway in a way that would have struck fear in the citizens of Pompeii and would have pissed Greta Thunberg right off. Naturally each display of tire debauchery was met with wild applause from the crowd. Knowing that just burning up some tires wouldn’t win all the glory and the chicks, most contestants went in for extra style points by chugging beers while blowin’ tires. Not to be out done Mike Morgan turned up a half gallon of Jameson while burning up a perfectly good tire on a Road King. But he didn’t stop there! Samantha Allman climbed on and stood on the back seat calling for more audience applause. She got it. Mike blew the tire and won the envy of the crowd, and first place. Even after the top three burnouts were practically decided, more and more took to the TRS burnout pit to have a little fun. Alabama tried to get in on the fun, but he was already cut off from any more shenanigans. Carly Dukes Goodwill finished off the Burnout Contest by taking the bike she would win Best Chopper on and with the help of her husband Jody Goodwill burned the tire til she couldn’t hold the bike up anymore in honor of her dad Tony Dukes, whom we lost to cancer just last year. No biker event is complete without having a bunch of hot biker mommas and fender warmers participate in a little Mayhem. Jaybird’s Custom Cycles stepped up and put out $500 to the first-place winner of our little “Aquatic Beauty Pageant”, the Ms. Mayhem Contest. There were 16 contestants on 8 lovely ladies who were decked out in complimentary tight white Jaybird Custom Cycles tank tops. The contestants paraded out to the center of the field where the pedestrians formed a tight circle around them all trying to get a good spot for the show. After taking on few gallons of water the 8 lovelies took turns twirlin’, dancing, and shaking what they had for the esteemed judges’ panel. Naturally, this took a few

Mayhem In Midway was an epic success in its first year, but only because of all the people who pitched in to helped, believed and supported the event and I can’t thank you all enough. I cannot end this without throwing out there some recognition of the “Friends Of Mayhem”. Mark and Molly Infield, who allowed me to even entertain this idea and believed in the Mayhem. Kary snagged some parts from some outside sources like a seat from Leperra Seats, and awesome open belt drive from Belt Drives Limited, and some upswept pipes from Paughco Parts. Chris Collins at High Point Body and Paint donated a gorgeous ghost flame paint job that brought the whole project together. The bike that Kary produced was a sweet old school Evo chopper. We debuted the bike at the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Anniversary Party in August and had short time to get tickets sold. Again, a great group effort was made by our Mayhem support crew to sell tickets leading up to the event. In between the last two bands of the day the Pandemonium crew and the Full Throttle crew took to the stage and with a little help from the newly crowned Ms. Mayhem, we gave the bike away. Shasta Earls from Lexington bought the winning ticket at Mayhem. Well technically her husband Emory bought the ticket, but Shasta signed it! The good news for Emory is that the bike fits him perfectly. They had left the Field Of Mayhem prior to the drawing, but we called ‘em on the phone to share the good news. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. We should have known... ONLY women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost. On the Sunday before Christmas Reverend Billy Graham was walking down Highland Street in Mt Holly, North Carolina on his way to see a parishioner. However, he wanted to post a parcel urgently so he asked a young boy where he could find the post office. When the boy had directed him, Reverend Graham thanked him and said, “If you’ll come to the Church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven.” The boy replied, “I think I’ll give your sermon a miss. She rubs my back every morning and then gets up and makes me pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and freshly ground coffee.” I continued, “Well, then why are you crying?” He added, “She makes me homemade soup for lunch and my favorite biscuits, cleans the house and then watches sports TV with me for the rest of the afternoon.” I said, “Well, why are you crying?” He said, “For dinner she makes me a gourmet meal with wine and my favorite dessert and then we cuddle until the small hours.” I inquired, “Well then, why in the world would you be crying?” He replied, “I can’t remember where I live.” My sister, Paula, and her husband, Chris, had just finished tucking their young ones into bed one evening when they heard crying coming from the children’s room. Rushing in, they found Tommy crying hysterically. He had accidentally swallowed a 5-cent piece and was sure he was going to die. No amount of talking could change his mind. Trying to calm him, Chris palmed a 5-cent coin that he happened to have in his pocket and pretended to remove it from Tommy’s ear. Tommy, naturally, was delighted. After quite a struggle with the shoes, which were a little tight, Tessa finally got them on. “They’re on the wrong way round, Miss Tessa,” mumbled Marlon. She realizes that he is right; they are on the wrong feet. Staying calm, she and swaps them over for him. “They’re not my shoes, Miss,” Marlon murmurs again. Tessa fights hard to keep her cool and asks Marlon why he hadn’t told her that before. She then kneels down again and helps him pull the shoes off. “These aren’t my shoes, they’re my brother’s and Mom told me not to tell anyone.” At this point Miss Tessa can feel tears coming. She helps him back into his shoes. She gets him into his coat and wraps his scarf round his neck. “Where are your gloves, Marlon?” asks Tessa quietly. “Oh, Miss, I always put them in my shoes!” Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside with only a pet dog for company.
