here are only two things on my mind this time of year – better riding weather and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 20th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre Daytona, Valentine’s Day, Oyster Roast, and Party. The weather is sure to improve as the days get longer and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar has already begun to expand as evidence that others agree with my forecast. First, though, we are going to party! This year’s Fear Of February party is a “home coming” of sorts since Double D Burnout Saloon, formerly Full Throttle Saloon (the ORIGINAL) located at 1408 East Mountain Street in Kernersville, NC will host the event on February 10th from noon to 6pm. This is the location of the 1st FOF Party. This is a great location that has plenty of paved bike parking, lots of room out back with a deck, a stage, and a fire pit. They have renovated the interior to suit our lifestyle and have all ABC permits so you can get anything you want. Rukus will be providing the music. This year, as in the past couple of years, the Karney Law Firm will sponsor the oysters and be there with Karney Law calendars, along with Smokin’ HarleyDavidson. Hayes Jewelers “The King Of Diamonds” of Lexington sponsors the diamond heart pendant and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is responsible for the 55” 4K Flat Screen TV that will go home with some lucky person. Our “Deal of the Day”, is an event t-shirt and 5 raffle tickets, will be available, too. These ALWAYS sell out, so be sure get yours early. We always bring “Little Orifice Annie” along and play a bike game called “Hitter In The Shitter”. The object is to give Annie a poke with a pool noodle from a moving motorcycle. I think you get the idea. If you haven’t seen this one, you gotta be there. We even provide a mini bike so everyone who wants to can play. There are several motels nearby, so if you are from out of town, come on and have a big time. Spend the night and do not worry about getting home or a DUI. Consider this your personal invitation to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February, 20th Attempt, Pre-Daytona, Valentines Day Party, and Oyster Roast. We say attempt because each year, we attempt to pull this off and so far we have been successful 19 out of 20 times. This is an adult venue. Everyone is welcome EXCEPT if you are under 21 years old. NO EXCEPTIONS. Be our guests. It is a free event with free oysters (as long as they last), fun, games, and music. What else could you ask for? Sunshine and warm temperatures!

Ride America Tours When it comes to motorcycle touring companies, there is nothing like Ride America Tours. The company hand delivers your bike to the most treasured motorcycle destinations in the United States. Ride America Tour guides then lead you along a journey of a lifetime. The goal for every motorcycle tour is simple, to create a “Mountain Top Experience” that will last forever. It all started in 1999, when Gerald Carver purchased his first motorcycle. It was a brand new 1999 Road King. It didn’t really matter to Gerald that he had never ridden a motorcycle. All he knew was that it had always been a lifelong dream and he was determined to make it happen. The purchase of that Road King started him on a journey that would infect two more generations with the desire to ride. Gerald spent his whole career in the Industrial Gas Industry and retired in 2009. For the past 20 years Gerald and his wife of 55 + years, Dell, rode all over the United States and Canada. In fact, there not many places in the U.S. they have not been. It is the trips that Gerald and Dell have taken over the past twenty years that were the inspiration for Ride America Tours. As they both look back over the latter part of their lives, it is the time on the bike that has created some of their best memories. It would not be long before Gerald’s oldest grandson, Chris Carver, began riding at the ripe old age of 17. Now 27, Chris has a passion for riding that has led him to obtain his Motorcy-

cle Safety Foundation Rider Coach Certification. Chris loves to ride and is the company’s Chief Tour Guide. About five years ago, Richard Carver, Gerald’s youngest son and Chris’ father, started riding. Richard was 45 years old when he went on his first motorcycle ride, and you guessed it, that same 1999 Road King was there for the maiden voyage. Ever since that first ride, Richard has been hooked on riding. When he is not working or being a father to his six children, you will find him on the open roads making memories. Ride America Tours, three generations that all have a passion for riding and for making memories. Let Ride America help you make memories that will last a lifetime.

Windjammers 29th Annual Toy Run

By Wally Wersching On Saturday, December 16th, the Windjammers Motorcycle Club held their 29th Annual Toy Run for the Cleveland County Children’s Homes. There was a real air of anticipation. Everyone in the area looks forward to the Windjammers Toy Run. It’s a time to meet old friends, and to make new ones, too. I anxiously watched the weather for the week before the run. The temps on Saturday were starting out in the mid 20’s, and would be in the lower 50’s by late afternoon. The sun was shining, so God was watching over the Toy Run again this year. The Windjammer’s Toy Run is an all-day event. It starts at 7:30AM with breakfast at the clubhouse with lots of hot coffee, donuts, homemade sausage, livermush, and biscuits. From there, it goes to the “Gathering Place” - the Cleveland Mall parking lot in Shelby. At 1PM, the parade, with police escort, goes to one of the Cleveland County Children’s Homes – Aaron’s House west of Shelby. To end the experience, it’s back to the clubhouse for free BBQ and fixin’s, along with live music.

Each year’s toy run really starts with the cooking of the BBQ. This year “Hangman” again stayed up all night to slowly cook the delicious pork. I stopped by the clubhouse at about 10:30AM. There was a small group of Windjammers preparing for the day’s events. I ate one of the breakfast biscuits. It was delicious. They were getting ready to head to the Mall or Aaron’s house depending on their assigned responsibility. About 11:30AM, the bikes start congregating at the Cleveland Mall. The old military truck was the place to drop off the toys if they were too big or clumsy to carry on the bike. As time passed, the large parking lot slowly filled with bikers. It’s always a lot of fun. Many old friends were there shaking hands, and hugging each other in friendly greetings. I saw some old friends that I only see during toy runs. There were many clubs, and biker ministries represented at the run. All brought toys strapped to their bikes. Some were in costume, and others had their bikes decorated in the Christmas spirit. Many riders had children as passengers behind them. It had warmed up to the low 30’s by then but it was still pretty chilly. It was difficult to see some of the youngster’s faces. I left a few minutes before the parade pulled out of the mall so I could get to the home before they do. I’ll take pictures as they ride in. At exactly 1PM, the command to fire-‘em-up went out, and the parade started heading toward the Court Square in Shelby with a police escort. Once it starts, there are motorcycles as far as the eye can see, and the roar is almost deafening as they pass. When I arrived at the home, I talked with Miss Margie, the Continued On Page 18

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Continued From Page 16 Director of the Children’s Homes, and gave her a DVD with pictures of all 28 previous toy runs. She uses the pictures to share the experience with other people on Facebook, and the local papers. She told me of a tragic happening the night before. Paulette Lawrence, a childcare worker who cared for boys and girls at Aaron’s House for more than two and half years, died in an auto accident. She was loved by many. Her daughter, Monica, who works at the other group home, was also seriously injured in the accident. It put a somber mood over the rest of the day’s events. When we heard the police escort sirens in the distance, we all looked down the road to see the arrival of the parade. As the bikes arrived, it was a very festive event. Some of the people who brought a gift into the home had tears in their eyes as they left. Everybody had a smile on their face especially when Miss Margie thanked them as they walked onto the porch. It’s always a pleasure to be part of any toy run, especially the Windjammers - because we get to meet some of the children. This year every biker got a candy-cane from a youngster. They really appreciate what we do. That’s why I haven’t missed one since the first one on December 17, 1989. I plan on going to all the future ones, too. After the toys were dropped off, some of the bikers quickly left to get an early start on the BBQ at the club house but most continued to mingle on the front lawn as though they didn’t want it to end. Next year’s toy run starts the day after this year’s run. The club members work all year so that the next toy run will be the best ever. It’s all worth it to know that there will be toys for the children on Christmas Day. Ever since the 1992 Toy Run, the Windjammers Toy Runs have given over a half a million dollars to the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County. The money has been used to give the children a more normal life. This year’s run was a relatively good one with an estimated 300 bikes. The weather has the most influence on how many bikes are at the toy run. There have been years with close to 1,000 bikes when the weather was warm and sunny. We all pray for good weather each year. I’ll be back again next year no matter what the weather. Mark your calendar – the last weekend in December before Christmas!

A New Name In Raleigh NC By: Kris Weiss With a new era comes a new name, Tobacco Road HarleyDavidson. For 35 years Ray Price Harley-Davidson has been a staple in Raleigh, North Carolina. The dealership has been a destination for many people, some of whom have been customers for nearly as long as the operation has been in Raleigh. Ray and Jean ran the dealership hand in hand until Ray passed away in December of 2015. For the last two years Jean and her daughter, Robin, have been overseeing the operations of the store along with Mark Hendrix, the General Manager. The business has run smoothly for the last two years, but in recent months Jean started to think about retirement. After processing the many offers of those wanting to purchase the longtime successful dealership, Jean decided on a family friend who owns two other Harley-Davidson® stores in Arizona. John Morotti has known the Price family since he started in

the Harley® world over 17 years ago. John’s philosophy towards the business is to keep things going with the same team in place. “Changes will take place”, says Mark Hendrix, “but a lot of things will stay the same.” Referring to the great people already working at the dealership and offering the same great service Ray Price HarleyDavidson was known for is what Hendrix means. One of the

most visible changes of this well-known Harley destination is the name. Upon retiring from the business, it was also Jean Price’s decision to retire the name, wanting the dealership’s namesake to “go out on top”, just like their drag racing team did in 2015 with two back to back NHRA Top Fuel Championships. Retiring the Ray Price name was not something the new owner wanted, but he had to respect Jean’s wishes and come up with another moniker. “Tobacco Road has a lot of history when it comes to this area”, said Hendrix in reference to the new name. There are several connotations to the regional-leaning name, but one thing is for sure, it refers to US 70 and I-40 that run through Raleigh, where the dealership is uniquely situated. Many of the dealership’s long-time customers understand and appreciate that Jean is ready to retire and that she’s looking forward to enjoying some down time in her golden years. The new name has been well accepted by most people once they understand that it was Jean’s decision to keep Ray Price all to herself. Everyone who calls this dealership home will always hold Ray and Jean close to their heart, and will be able to honor the racing legend at the Ray Price Legends Of Harley Drag Racing Museum on the dealership’s second floor. And for some, the name may never be anything else than Ray Price.

We all met for a meet and greet at The Carolina Ale House for breakfast at 7:30 am. We had speakers to start the day out with a presentation from 8:30-9:00 am by Bill Taylor, Bill Fuller, and Chad Fuller to discuss legislative items. At 9am we had 2 shuttles provided by Carolina Honda (Southern Shuttles LLC) to take everyone to the state house. At 9:30 we meet outside of the Governor’s office for a group picture. Then around 9:45 we then took a walk to deliver the ABATE magazines to our legislators and talk with them. Around 12 pm we all gathered to fill the balconies for the opening of the session. This year was my first time attending and I will say that I will come back to do it again. This was such a perfect day to see some of our biker community come together and knowing we got so much support from everyone, it made me feel the brotherhood. I would like to thank Bill Fuller, Chad Fuller, Ralph Bell, and one I can’t forget for the good conversation, Mr. Tom McGrath. It was good to meet you all. Thank you for everything and everyone that made this day a success and the hard work put into this. I think we all got something out of this and we will only get bigger and better. Joe Pigg (1961 - 2017) By: Rick Gammons December 4, 1961 the world was “blessed” with a man named Joe Pigg. He became quite a character over the years and when I had the privilege of meeting Joe a couple years ago, I had a feeling it was going to be on....and it was! It always is when a couple of boogers get together! I met Joe at Joe’s Pigg Pen (aka - Archdale Drive Thru) the bar he owned, while soliciting his business. He sat me down, bought me a beer and asked how Full Throttle Magazine could help him. I told him and he came on board with us. That was not all. Joe was covered with mischievousness. He was loud and proud. He and his buds played video bowling a lot, and I mean a lot. Joe was good at it and there was constant friendly bantering during the entire game. Joe always said, “Hate the game, not the player!” The Pigg Pen was just the right kind of place for everyday people and bikers. Just the right type of place where you could feel comfortable all the time. Joe was a longtime biker and he loved to ride. I could usually tell if he was at the bar because his bike was parked beside, often! Unfortunately, the motorcycle led to his demise. He, and another biker brother were riding into town. His front wheel dropped off the edge of the pavement and he, and the motorcycle were pitched wildly. He suffered back injuries and had no feelings in his hands

and feet. He was taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem where he started recuperation and therapy. This went on for quite some time. One morning, I was on Facebook and saw where one of my buds had posted the passing of Joe Pigg. I was stunned. I was speechless. My newest friend was gone! His wife, Karen and I had spoken the night before on his progress with therapy. I had hopes, but unbekownst to me, he had contracted pneumonia. During the night one of his lungs collapsed. The stress of trying to get him stable was more than his heart could take and he died, moments before Karen got there. She collapsed when she heard the news. One of this area’s best personalities was gone. Even now, it’s still hard to deal with. And I cannot imagine the grief that Karen is going through. Keep her in your prayers and, if you know her, call her with with support. Joe has moved on and is now on the highway to forever, along with some of our buds that have ridden out ahead of the rest of us. As more bikers pass, it is comforting to know that when it is my time to cruise that highway, I will be with good company. Keep the highway hot, bud. I will see you again one day.

Statesville CMA Forming Chapter Delivers A Merry Christmas

By: Gary Steelman On Saturday, December 16th, CMA Forming Chapter in Statesville held their regular monthly meeting at Boxcar Grille in Statesville. The Chapter had decided to help out some families in the local area with Christmas. Presents were bought and wrapped, food stuffs were gathered, and now after the meeting it had come time to deliver. Craig Liverman, as President of the local forming Chapter led the ride to Taylorsville. Despite the 40º F weather, it was a beautiful day for a ride. Five bikes, a pickup truck and a few cars trekked through Iredell and Alexander counties to the home of Jennifer, Chloe, Ava, and Joshua. Santa Craig and his helpers were met with big smiles as the bikes pulled up in the yard. The kids were acting a little shy at first and then the presents were unloaded and that all changed. Little Ava still was not having anything to do with those loud bikes. The visit here ended with the Chaplin praying for the family and giving thanks for the CAR HAULERS Starting @ $2190.00

blessings this season brings. Then another ride back to Statesville to meet Tomeka and O’Marion. This family was really excited to see the bikes pull up in the yard. Tomeka invited everyone in and the presents were laid out in corner of the living room floor. There was no tree, the only Christmas ended up in that little corner. The conversations alluded to hard times for this home at Christmas. Santa and his helpers played ball with O’Marion for a while and the Chaplin prayed for the family and gave thanks for the blessings offered by this season of giving. Thanks for the new friendships and those longstanding. Thanks to everyone for their time and energy put into making the day a great success. The CMA forming chapter of Statesville meets once a month on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 9 am at Boxcar Grille in Statesville, NC. Feel welcome to visit with Craig, Jean and a host of servants of the Christ. Rides are scheduled after the meetings so, come meet and ride with the forming Chapter. Merry Christmas to all and here’s to hope for a Happy New Year 2018!

MOTUS USA By: Rick Gammon There is just no stopping Monty and Bob at Indian of Greensboro. Not only do they sell a favorite motorcycle of many (Indian), but they are an authorized Victory Motorcycle Dealership (sorry, I bought the last on they had, at that time). They can still get parts for Victory for another ten years. They also have Slingshot, very popular ride these days. This is all great, but now Monty brought in Motus a couple months ago. A lot of you might not know what Motus is. It is, in fact, an American sport touring motorcycle loaded with a 1650 cc liquid cooled high performance V4. The MST delivers 123 ft. lb. torque at 5000rpm (the MSTR 126 lb.), weighs only 580 lbs., has a 5.5 gal. tank with heated grips and seat. It is very

lean and mean......and very fast! The MST is a high performance, “canyon carving” sport bike, great for long stretches of bent road. The MSTR is designed to be a street bike. The stock MSTR holds land speed records on pavement and salt as the world’s fastest pushrod motorcycle. When Motus began, they realized that the “ideal” engine did not exist, so they built a V4 baby block motor - pushrod powered V4 with massive torque! It was American cars and trucks that made the basis for this high performing racing motorcycle. Just after Monty got a few of these in, he sponsored a test ride weekend. The weather was just a bit cool, but OK. Great riding weather! And the coolness did not deter a large group of motorcycle riders from coming in to test these awesome machines. I watched groups of riders come and go. Their faces told the story. I think every rider there was impressed with the performance coming from these bikes. A lot of the testers were cruiser riders. No one had any complaints. Motus is not just a movement, but a revolt! Beauty is the beast! Find you one at 201 S. Church Street, Greensboro, I dare you. Now, you know where they are. I challenge you to test ride one. You just might go home with it. To learn more, visit www.MotusMotorcycles.com.

Spartan Kryptea, A Book Review

By: WildThing Attention lovers of biker Frank Kane (former chief enforcer of the now defunct Spartan MC East Coast) stories, a third installment awaits you. And…you won’t be disappointed. Author John F. Saunders has spun another masterful tale of the intrigue that surrounds Frank Kane like the proverbial dark cloud. It is somewhat useful to have read the first two Frank Kane novels, The Last Spartan and Spartan Negotiator. You would then be aware of Frank’s previous exploits and have a little insight into his character and demeanor. However, Spartan Kryptea can also serve as a stand-alone legend that is quite exciting with the twisting plot, fast moving action, history flashbacks to Frank’s time with the Spartans, and their affinity to Greek mythology. The early chapters set the stage and the cast of characters that will invade Frank Kane’s life in this volume. He is making good on his promise to some young friends to take them on a vacation to the Bahamas. As anyone who has been to this luxurious resort built on a coral archipelago of 700 islands in the Atlantic, will be able to form a mental picture of the scenes related in the story. Inject the enforcer with a history, Frank Kane, and sit back and watch the fireworks. Specifically, bad guys from Frank’s past have come out of the woodwork with lighted matches, bent on setting off the

fireworks. And each susceptible to his own fantasy of besting the warrior that is Frank Kane. After all, “many whispered that he couldn’t be killed. God knew how many had tried and suffered for it.” And finally, what is ‘Kryptea’? Why, that is why you must pick up your copy and find all the answers while you experience this fast-paced thriller forged from the life of a one percenter. For your copy, order online at Amazon.com, at the publisher’s site: Savpress.com or at Barnes & Noble Book stores. And by the way, watch for the movie release this year of the first novel: The Last Spartan.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 20th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre Daytona, Valentine’s Day, Oyster Roast, and Party

20

th ATTEMPT

1999-2018

ALMOST A TRADITION By: Mark Infield Has January been rather flat this year or is it just me? We have had the cold weather and the snow in different parts of the Carolinas, but that’s all behind us now. Our crew went to the Easyriders Bike Show and it was great to see everyone again this year. Now I want to give you a “heads up” on a party that you do not have to pay to get in – The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 20th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre Daytona, Valentine’s Day, Oyster Roast, and Party. Since the weather is almost always awful, we call it the Fear Of February Party. We have had rain, sideways blowing snow, and lately some pretty nice days, so the tradition continues with the 20th attempt. This year, as in the past couple of years, the Karney Law Firm will sponsor the oysters and be there with Karney Law calendars, along with Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. We always bring “Little Orifice Annie” along and play a

bike game called “Hitter In The Shitter”. The object is to give Annie a poke with a pool noodle from a moving motorcycle. I think you get the idea. If you haven’t seen this one, you gotta be there. We even provide a mini bike so everyone who wants to can play. There are several motels nearby, so come on and have a big time. All of this, and, if we are lucky, moderate temperatures and some sunshine, will make the premiere riding season kick off event one huge party. We always say, “Sometimes the weather is bad, but the party is always great!” So no matter if you come on your bike or in your car, just come! It is always great to see people that we haven’t seen since the last toy run and some we haven’t seen since the last Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February, Pre-Daytona, Valentines Day Party, and Oyster Roast.

New Jewel In The Queen City By: Stretch In 2016 Angelo Greco had a vision for an old club on the West Side of Charlotte, NC. In this industrial area he saw a biker bar without restrictions like neighbors or noise ordinances. A place that could revive this side of town and give riders a destination to congregate and make new friends. All his energy went into renovating and restoring this old building. All his hard work, along with many friends gave his dream life on the West Side. With a soft opening, he started something that in his first year of business has taken over the West Side! Tank Town Tavern has really out done itself in it’s first year by adding the new patio with outside bars and a stage in the parking lot. Live music on the stage outside has been a BIG hit through out 2017 and now bands are calling him wanting to be on the stage. Bands from all over have pleased the many riders that come to Tank Town. Tank Town Tavern has been host to MANY events helping the riding community including benefits for kids, animals and victims of violent attacks. Tank Town Tavern has never asked for anything in return other than giving of their time and place to help!!

In January of 2017 I spoke with Angelo about doing some advertising with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magizine. He agreed that we would make a good fit for what he wanted to accomplish. Since this time he has seen his business take off like he never imagined like taking in an average of 30 new membership applications per week. People from all over the Carolinas ride for hours to check out this jewel known as Tank Town Tavern. 2018 promises to be BIGGER and BETTER at Tank Town Tavern. So make Tank Town Tavern a place to visit this year. Angelo and staff have promised big things going on this year. So check out Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for events coming to Tank Town Tavern. Here’s the first event already planned by Tank Town Tavern for 2018. Tank Town Tavern is Hosting it’s SPRING FEVER BASH on April 21st. Many things will be happening. So keep your copy of Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine handy. Oh, did I mention that Tank Town Tavern has invited Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine to take part at the SPRING FEVER BASH? So with that said, keep looking for what we may do at Tank Town Tavern! It promises to be FUN!

Thornley Takes Two 2017 Championships Story and photo by Alan Dockery Nitro Granny has done it again. Janette Thornley of Statesville, NC, has taken two more national motorcycle drag racing championships. In 2017, she took the Pro Fuel title for the American Drag Racing League and the prestigious championship in the American Motorcycle Racing Association. In six seasons racing a Pro Fuel Harley as Dream Chaser Racin’, Janette has won four national championships. Other women have raced and won and taken titles on nitro bikes, but I think Janette is the winningest. She is certainly a Harley racing hero to women and men who cheer her down the strip. machine ready to send the competition to the trailer on race day. Pro Fuel bikes are cool machines. This is the small class of nitromethane-fueled drag race bikes with 121 cubic inch engines, single-speed no transmission, and gravity fed carburetor. I have always been impressed by folks who can make these bikes run right. “It was a great year for Dream Chaser Racin’,” Janette said. “We won both the AMRA and ADRL Pro Fuel Championships. Our quickest run in 2017 was a 7.24 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Our first time there. At the September Bowling Green race we ran 7.294 at 181 miles per hour.” “In September, we debuted the new Pro Fuel bike we purchased in June for the motor. It’s another Hawaya Racing Products build and very similar to the 2015 bike we’ve been running. The NHRA Pro Fuel 2015 and 2016 Championship winning bike is for sale. For 2018 we plan to continue supporting the AMRA and get some seat time on an injected bike. If the stars align, you might see me on a Top Fuel bike by the end of the season. But I’m not pushing anything.” I bet the NHRA fans would love Nitro Granny in Top Fuel.

10th Annual Polar Bear Ride Benefiting The Onslow County Soup Kitchen By: Tazz Veteran Enforcers Motorcycle Association (VEMA) Jacksonville, NC Chapter were scheduled to meet Saturday, January 13th @ 10 am at Check Point 1. This was our 5th year attending. The sun was out and the temperature was around 45°, however, the brisk wind made it a little unpleasant. It felt like 40° with the wind. Never the less, I started up my 2012 H-D Ultra Limited with a little struggle. After engine was warm to touch, I moved to the end of my driveway. The flags caught my eye and took a selfie with Old Glory and our Marine Corps Flag flapping in the wind. (Photo -Tazz with beautiful flags) Once I arrived at Check Point 1, we waited for the rest of the chapter to arrive. The truck pulled up with all the donations we picked up. After our meet and greet, we did our safety brief, said a prayer and we mounted our bikes and were off to the event. As we arrived there was a CMA chapter member providing directions for lining up and parking the motorcycles. It seemed we were the first big chapter to arrive. We parked our bikes, did our meet and greet and were off to the unloading area for the donations. Once we were given our area we noticed it was marked by our chapter name, VEMA. That was a great feeling and we realized we will never miss this event and have made it one of our annual events.

After the donations we’re off loaded, I went to sign us in. Shortly after unloading the truck many other organizations started to arrive to off load their donations, too. The tables quickly stacked high with donations of canned goods, beans, vegetables, paper towels, napkins, dish detergent, gas cards, cash donations, and many other items. Rolling Thunder NC-5 and other chapter members were there, who happen to wing the trophy every year. Keep in mind they are the biggest chapter in the state of North Carolina. VEMA Jacksonville chapter is only 1 of 3 chapters in the state of NC. Our chapter here in Jacksonville is only 15 VEMA Strong. We have been on Rolling Thunders tail every year on who has brought the most donated items. A trophy is given out every year and the soup kitchen always wins first place, which they should, because that’s what matters most. This year Rolling Thunder NC-5 took top place and VEMA once again took 2nd place. The little competition makes it challenging for other chapters to get out and donate more and in the end the soup kitchen wins. After all the donations are collected we do the meet and greet. Many other chapters’ members and their families, volunteers, independent riders, and guest mingle and have coffee and some sweets and talk about the exciting new year of riding and future events. Around 15 minutes prior to kick stand up (KSU) @ noon CMA conducted our safety brief and the route. Yes, we go on a little ride around Onslow County and end up at a local restaurant and break bread with our fellow riders, their families, and other guest. Continued On Page 42

This year we went to the Golden Corral to eat. After we arrive, the CMA conducts a bike blessing and hands out all the stickers of the year to put on your bikes. It’s one of my favorite moments of the year. Once, the blessings were done, we headed inside to warm up and pay for our meals. We had a closed off room so that after we ate CMA could announce the winner of the top donations (Rolling Thunder NC-5) and it also gives them time to say thank you for all the support. It also gives time for CMA to announce other future events and announce each chapter representative who attended and they too can announce future events. Our VEMA chapter President, Gator Doc, went up to receive our certificate for participating. He announced our future event for June 2, 2018 “ 6th Annual Ride For Our Warriors Poker Run benefiting the USO of North Carolina, Jacksonville Center hosted by the Veteran Enforcers Motorcycle Association Jacksonville NC Chapter. Once the announcements are done everyone slowly starts to head out but not before saying, thank you and see you all at the next event. Every year the Annual Polar Bear Ride Benefiting The Onslow County Soup Kitchen event grows and its story really needs to be told. I couldn’t believe how many people are given meals each day at the soup kitchen. Representatives mentioned they feed over 8,000 people a month! The Polar Bear Ride is just a great way the jump start for the year. However, they take donations throughout the year. Red Knight’s Chapter 21 January Ride

By: Peter Weinrich On Saturday, January 13, members of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club (RKMC) NC 21 gathered at Cooksville Fire Department in Catawba County for their monthly meeting. The Red Knights are a group of active-retired-social and associate members that have an interest in firefighting and motorcycles. Members were greeted with hot coffee, doughnuts and hot chocolate before the meeting. The ride captains coordinated a ride for members after the meeting that would ultimately take the riders through three counties, over 100 miles, and would visit 13 different fire stations in the process. The Red Knights MC International has a program that recognizes members’ visits to various fire stations and includes rides such as the 12 Station Tour, Red Knight, Firehouse, Grand Tour, the Alphabet tour. The process is to visit a fire department, and the letters used are the first letter of a fire station, for example: a visit to Falston FD creates the letter “F” which can be used when spelling firehouse, or used in the alphabet or 12 Station Tour. The mission

this morning was to visit 13 fire stations in one day as a group, complete the photographs, and submit them to the RKMC National for recognition. The ride began with a photo at Cooksville FD with a special visit from the Red Knight “Sir Rides A Lot”. With thumbs up, the ride captain led the group south on Old Shelby road, then southeast to Hwy 10 through the countryside. Despite the brisk wind and cold temperatures, the day was bright and the scenery spectacular. The foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains stood majestically on the horizon as Hwy 10 wove its way following the contours of the land past farms, pastures, and crop lands, leading us to Casar Fire Department and our first meet and great. A quick exchange of patches and photos and riders were again enjoying the brotherhood and the open road. Old country roads led us through small country towns with names like Polkton (founded in 1885), Lawndale (home of the Piedmont School 1800’s) and Falston (population 607), past now closed mills and general stores, and two counties later, members rode east and were stopping in historic Lincolnton for a warm meal and a break from the increasing cold. A meal with friends always brings out the stories, the jokes, and the playful ribbing bikers are known for. After almost two hours, the decision was made to continue the quest to visit 13 fire stations in one day and the remaining trip was planned over the remains of what was once a full dinner plate, now reduced to nothing but scraps. Heading east on Hwy 27, there was another stop at Boger City (a formerly unincorporated community of 554 people now annexed as part of Lincolnton) before heading north. The back-country roads had turned to city streets and had now become a highway as the dedicated group headed north towards Catawba County, and their final Continued On Page 46

Continued From Page 44 fire department visits. The group parted ways after arriving at Newton FD Station 3 on Startown Road, but not before a final group photo and another meet and greet. The on-duty firefighters at Newton welcomed the now cold and tired riders into the fire station. The antique fire truck was parked at the station so a last group photo was almost mandatory. Hugs, safe riding wishes, and a few “see ya soon” comments and the group split to head towards home. One small group headed west, the other went east, both stopping at one last fire station before finally arriving at their homes. The final few miles for both groups provided a magnificent sunset which pushed all thoughts of frozen fingers and numb toes to the back of the cranium and replaced it with thoughts of how great an artist Mother Nature is. Finally at home, a hot cup of coffee or tea and warm clothes and the day ended with dreams of another ride and future visits.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

Richner Takes AMRA Super Comp Title Story and photo by Alan Dockery I don’t remember the year, but do know where I first met Keith Richner. He and a few friends rode into Atlanta Dragway and camped next to us. Since we brought vehicles and came ready to party, welcomed them to join us. I soon realized these guys were serious fans and had been to most of the races I attend. We quickly became friends and soon I was seeing Keith roar down the strip. In 2017 he took the American Motorcycle Racing Association National Championship in the Super Comp Class. That’s the quickest of the Sportsman Index Classes running on an 8.90 second index in the quarter mile. The quicker you go, the harder it is to hit that number. And the more it costs to race and break parts. Keith also is one of those riders who I run into at a variety of motorcycle events. Some of my biker buddies are into all kinds of ways to enjoy motorcycles. Keith and his friends are Roosters and can be found camped near the creek at Riders’ Roost in Ferguson, NC. Will never forget the first Smoke Out at Rockingham when they made the biggest pile of

beer cans in the campgrounds. And he brings some nice, rare Harleys to the Antique Motorcycle Club of America meets. Riding motorcycles for 50 years, Keith has acquired quite a collection in Spartanburg, SC, where he works in sales for a manufacturing company. He’s been down South since 1985 when moved from Ohio. Keith likes old, original bikes and has shown me some that still have antique Milwaukee air in the tires. But the drag strip is where he stands out. “I caught the bug by attending a couple All Harley Drag Racing Association events about 15 years back and decided I could do that. It looked like a blast,” Keith said. “I was hooked from that point forward. My wife, Lori, encouraged me. She told me I wasn’t getting any younger and I better get on with it if I was serious about it. She is quite a gal, always supportive and understanding of my hobbies and extracurricular activities.” I remember seeing him start, like so many folks, by running his street bike in the Dial-In ET Class. I love it when I see a fan has come out of the stands and is roaring down the strip. “My first bike down the dragstrip was a 1996 Evo Police Bike at a local track in South Carolina,” he said. “It was built to a 110 cubic inches and ran in the high twelve seconds in the quarter mile, mid-sevens in the eight. Of course that was my daily rider. I still have it in the corner of my shop collecting dust.” He built a second bike out of a Paughco frame and another 110 inch Evo motor. “It was a kick start only with 110 inches and high compression,” he said. “By the time I could get it started, I was too exhausted to make a good pass.” Keith moved up to his first “real” race bike in about 2009. That one got my attention because he used my favorite gas Continued On Page 50

tank ever sold by Harley-Davidson – the single-filler Super Glide tank. “We made a frame from a Fat Boy chassis with extended swing arm, wheelie bars and my signature red and black 1970’s Super Glide tank and powered by an S&S 126 CI engine. I ran Super Gas (9.70 in AHDRA and 9.90 in AMRA) and eventually Top Eliminator (9.30) once I figured out how to make it faster by upping the cubic inches to 145. Many thanks to my engine builder and helper Dyno Joe Harris of C&C Thunder in Cowpens, SC.” “The need for speed quickly overtook me and I had Gregg Dahl from GMS build me a new lightweight and geometrically correct chassis. I kept the same general look and numerous parts, only light and fast. That bike will run mid 8’s today,” Keith said. In 2014 the AMRA reinstated the Super Comp Class. Keith took the national championship that year. He finished fourth in the national points in 2015 and second in points in 2016. “I have had a pretty successful run in Super Comp and haven’t missed a single event in the past six years,” he said. Look for Keith at AMRA races this year as he works on keeping that Number One plate on the Super Comp bike. Plus he is running my favorite class Outlaw Street. “During the off season between 2015 and 2016, I built an Outlaw Street bike for a new challenge. I bit off one heck of a mouthful with that! I think I am the only one in the league running one wheelie bar and one non-wheelie bar bike. Seemed like a good idea at the time. I struggled through the 2016 season, breaking everything imaginable and then improved some in 2017 finishing seventh in the national points. Gregg Dahl has been most helpful learning the ropes in this highly competitive and unpredictable class. With the help of Dyno Joe Harris, Gregg Dahl and Steve Moore I plan to unveil a mostly new Outlaw Street bike in 2018.” I look forward to seeing Keith do well in that class, too.

8th Annual Wreaths Across America By: Bill Gallaway The 8th Annual Wreaths Across America was held on Saturday, December 16, 2017. I attended the ceremony held at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina beginning at 12:00 noon. This is the day and time where, all across America, volunteers, veterans, friends, and family members get together to Remember, Honor and Teach by laying wreaths on veteran’s graves. The message of Remember Honor and Teach is the mission given to thousands of school children to honor each fallen serviceman as an individual. Hundreds gathered to help in this program by laying wreaths on the gravesites. The wreaths are in Memorial of those who served and are serving in the United States Army, Marine

Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, and United States Servicemen from all branches of service whose last known status was either POW or MIA. This was a rain or shine event and I happy to report that this year the sun was shining and the temperature was in the mid fifty’s. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

While enjoying their evening cocktails, the wife asks her husband, in a very seductive voice, “Have you ever seen twenty dollars all crumpled up?” “No,” said her husband. She gave him a sexy little smile, unbuttoned the top 3 or 4 buttons of her blouse, and slowly reached down into the cleavage created by a soft, silky push-up bra, and pulled out a crumpled twenty dollar bill. He took the crumpled twenty dollar bill from her and smiled approvingly. She then asked him, “Have you ever seen fifty dollars all crumpled up?” “Uh... no, I haven’t,” he said, with an anxious tone in his voice. She gave him another sexy little smile, pulled up her skirt, and seductively reached into her tight, sheer panties and pulled out a crumpled fifty dollar bill. He took the crumpled fifty dollar bill and started breathing a little quicker with anticipation. “Now,” she said, “have you ever seen $50,000 all crumpled up?” He said, “No!” trying to hide his anticipation. She said, “Check the garage.”

I had no idea. So, the lawyer says, “So, if I didn’t give any money to them, what makes you think I’d give any to you?”

A church puts out a wanted ad for somebody to ring their bell each day. A man with no arms replies to the want ad. The priest asks him “How can you ring a bell with no arms?” The man runs into the bell face first and the bell rings loud and beautifully. The priest gives him the job. One day he misses the bell though and falls to his death. The priest and several other people come to the man’s side and one of them says “Who is he?” The priest replies “I don’t know. But his face sure rings a bell.” A blonde woman goes to a shoe store and wants to buy some alligator shoes, but becomes angry when she sees the price. She storms out of the store saying, “I’m going to catch an alligator and get my own pair of shoes!” The shopkeeper laughs as he watches her leave. Later as the shopkeeper is driving home, he sees the blonde in a swamp on the side of the road. A 10foot alligator is swimming right at her but she swiftly knocks the alligator out. She drags it onto some grass where there is a dozen other knocked out alligators. She flips it over and yells, “Ah! This one’s barefoot too!” A pastor is standing before his congregation, “It has come to my attention that somebody has been telling lies about me. Somebody has been saying I am a member of the Ku Klux Klan. This is simply not true! Who has been telling this lie?” Everybody is silent for a while. He speaks again, “Come on now, face your sins so you can be forgiven!” Suddenly a drop dead gorgeous blonde rises and says, “I think somebody misunderstood me. I’ve been telling people that you are a wizard in the sheets.”

Harley-Davidson Footwear Bradbrook By: Maggie Everyone knows just how important boots are. They have to look good and protect you if necessary, but mainly they have to look good. I have been a backseat rider for years and have had my fair share of riding boots and knew what I was looking for when I needed a new pair. I wanted a good quality pair of boots and didn’t want to take a chance on that quality, so I went to Harley-DavidsonFootwear. com. HarleyDavidson Footwear has your style of boots whether you are looking for a casual boot, a riding boot, or even some cool looking Harley sneakers. I needed something in the riding department and Harley-Davidson Footwear made it tough to choose, offering over a dozen options of straps, buckles, zippers, or lace up boots. It was an arduous decision but I narrowed it down to the Bradbrook, a calf height of 7.5” shaft tall women’s leather riding boot with just enough unique, muted H-D® flair to know you are wearing a Harley boot, but it’s not over done! I also liked the versatility of the 1.5” heel. It offers style without making it hard to walk around in gravel and at field parties. The boot is easy on and off with a YKK® locking inside zipper with Velcro® closure along with 2 cute straps that go around the top of the uppers. The sole

of the boots have a lot of texture and are great to help me stand my ground! I have already put these boots to the test and they have stood up to getting caught in summer bike night monsoons and riding in snow and 30º for local toy runs along with all the weather and situations in between! They have kept my feet dry and comfortable and in so doing have earned my trust. I will definitely be going back to Harley-Davidson Footwear IF these Bradbrook’s ever wear out! If you are looking for a quality, good looking, tough boot, then your first stop should be Harley-DavidsonFootwear. com where you can shop all the styles available. If you would like to try them on, go by your favorite Harley-

Davidson dealer where, if you prefer, you can avoid the delay of shipping and walk out in your stylish new Harley-Davidson footwear. Happy Riding!

Want a Change?

Bros and Bro-ettes Here we are a month into the new year. What has changed from last year? Some people don’t want to change just because they don’t like changes. We get in a rut and go to bed at same time and get up same time day after day. Satan doesn’t like changes either. As soon as we get saved, Satan sends out his little demons and tries to get us to do and say things we know the Lord wouldn’t like. Satan comes to kill, steal, and destroy. When we were out in the world, Satan didn’t bother us because he already had us. Satan might tell you that you’re not worthy or good enough to serve the Lord, but he’s wrong. You can do anything with the Lord’s help. One thing that hasn’t changed going into a New Year and that’s Jesus Christ, he’s the same today, tomorrow, and last year. He still died on that cross for me and you and took all our sins away. He’s the same that created the world years ago. Some religious people might try to tell you different, but they are going to tell what they need to do so they can keep the big bucks coming their way. If you’re in doubt about it read your Bible. Hebrews 13-8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” How many have ever said, “I wish I could pray and talk to people like they do?” The Lord made you the way he wanted to. If you want to do things better all you have to do is ask him

to help you. Hebrews 13-5 “Let your conduct be without covetousness. Be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said I will never leave you nor forsake you.” We need to quit wishing to be someone else and just be ourselves. Hebrews 13-6 “So we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Hebrews 13-7 “Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.” Hebrews 13-9 “Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.” Just remember people are watching you and if you’re not doing and living right, why would they want to become saved. So, people think once saved always saved, if so why go to church and live a Christian life. Revelation 1-8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega the Beginning and the End, says the Lord. Who is and who will come again.” Jesus is coming back are you ready? You can be ready. All you have to do is pray and ask the Lord to come into your heart and live and serve Him.
