or many bikers in the Carolinas, it’s hard to contain the Christmas spirit in one issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Still Racing Dad’s Old AJS Flat Tracker

Story and photo by Alan Dockery ost of y’all know I ain’t into modern, shiny motorcycles. So, when I saw this old race bike at Cyclemania, I had to know more about it. A good story makes an old bike even more interesting to me. Tom Rhodes has a cool AJS and hours of stories about this machine. Tom lives This bike has in Catawba apparently never County, NC, been parked for near the power long. plant where he works and has a few motorcycles. But the 1947 AJS Model 18 is special. His Dad, Jerry Rhodes, bought the bike used in 1949 for $250. It had less than 200 miles on it and sold new for $490. Jerry worked at Shores Motorcycles on 8 Mile Road in Detroit where the bike was sold new. When the first owner brought it back, Jerry bought it. The bike was nothing special, just AJS’s 500cc single cylinder street bike. It would be a couple years before AJS sold a competition version. Though a flat track racer now, Tom still has the stock fenders and lights and such and takes the bike on dual sport rides. Yes, it freaks people out when he shows up at a check point. Rides it like a flat tracker too when passing other riders on hard packed roads. His Dad bought the AJS intending to race it. All the fenders and street parts sat in a shed until the 1970’s. Jerry modified the bike as well as he could back then. He installed a competition sport cam. Stock, it was 6 to 1 compression to run on bad

World War II gas. Shaved cylinders and heads and a better piston brings compression to more like 10 to 1. Bigger valves and head work helped too. Jerry was a member of the Gypsy Tour, Detroit Motorcycle Polo Team, and Detroit Motorcycle Club. He raced the AJS for years with the American Motorcycle Association as Number 72E mostly in the Michigan, Ohio and Indiana area. Tom has trophies his Dad won in all kinds of events. Jerry took that AJS to a variety of races including -- speedway racing, hill climbs, flat track half mile, hare scrambles, observed trials, ice racing and moto polo. Raced everything with the same bike. Only thing it hasn’t done is road race. Young Tom was even the monkey in the sidecar when Dad took it to the ice races. By 1972 when it was just no longer competitive, Jerry finally quit racing the bike. There was no vintage class back then.

He was still racing in the 500cc Heavy Weight Open Class. This bike has apparently never been parked for long. When Jerry quit racing, he put the lights and fenders back on and used it as a road bike. It’s never, not been a working motorcycle. This old AJS still has a Florida Vehicle Inspection sticker from the 1980’s when they moved down South. Tom’s Dad rode it to bike shows and bar nights and such until he died in 1992. Then his brother, Jim, got the bike and kept it up so he could ride it locally once in a while. Jim put several hundred miles a year on the Old AJS in the 20 years he had it. He would ride it across the state to Daytona Bike Week and around for days. The bike was in great shape with all original

paint and finishes. Tom got the bike in 2012 because he wanted to race it in Vintage Flat Track. What got Tom fired up was finding a set of aluminum fenders in his Dad’s old stuff. Fenders that had been used when racing the bike. He figured he had the parts to make it a race bike again. So, talked his brother into it. I told you the bike has lots of stories. Jerry raced it for more than 20 years, then rode on the street about 20 years. Jim rode the old bike for 20 years around Central Florida. Then Tom put it back in flat track condition and took to the race track again. “I took it on a dual sport ride and found that unless it was really nasty swampy stuff I could keep up,” Tom said. “That freaked people out. Found out about a flat track race nearby. Thought Dad used to flat track and I was his monkey in the side car. I had never flat tracked before, but did it. The next year I took number two in the nation in my class.” First raced at Aonia Pass Motocross Park, Washington, GA. Continued On Page 16

Continued From Page 15 That is the home track of the Atlanta Motorcycle Club which hosts several vintage races. The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association sanctions races for old bikes all over the country. “I race in the Dinosaur Class where the bikes are built in 1951 or earlier,” Tom said. “People love the dinosaur class since a field will have a Triumph Twin, a Norton, Infield, Matchless, AJS and others racing with Indians and Harleys. All in the same race.” “Modern tires make these bikes way faster. Everybody makes about the same horsepower. Except one guy who just kicks my butt on the half mile tracks. So, it’s wheel to wheel racing. Usually less than a second between first and last place at the finish line. Fans love tight racing.” The Second year, Tom traveled the circuit making all the races. Now only does races he wants to. Says there are only about 20 guys seriously racing in Dinosaur Class. “I’ve tried to do the same things my Dad did on that bike,” Tom said. “Dad raced five events in one day on it. I tried to do the Iron Man once.” That’s a race where entrants run several types of races; motocross, cross country, flat track, TT and trials on the same bike. “I get to race with some guys who were my heroes when

I was young. I read the dirt bike magazines way back then. Now they are pitted next me at the track. It’s the kind of racing I grew up with when five or six years old. Old fashioned friendly, low-key pits.” This is one tough little motorcycle surviving all these years and still racing. “I can pull it out after months of sitting and on the third kick it starts,” Tom said. “Dad had a machine shop and we learned to repair and keep things working. One of the things about racing a bike Dad raced, I’m realistically competitive on a national level.” This 1947 AJS Model 18 was built tough from the beginning. It still has the stock frame, forks and 19 inch wheels and weighs 430 pounds. Working on it must be fun since it has British Standard Whitworth fasteners and Lucas electrics. But Tom said it doesn’t need much maintenance. Modern Tires are a tight fit. So, tight Tom has to true wheels after every race since there is less than 1/16-inch clearance on each side. The bike has the original motor which has been modified and serviced, but never really totally rebuilt. Jerry did the top end when he hopped it around 1950 and 51. Then he redid it again in the 1960’s. The bike still has the stock Burman four-speed transmission. Shifts on the right side, first up the rest of the gears down. That pattern seems to work great for Tom. “When you are racing, and leaned over sliding around a corner on this bike, and the left side is greasy, you have to really shift it. I mean, you don’t just pull the clutch and tap the shift lever. That will find one of the five neutrals it has. Pushing down is better in a race situation when you want to stomp on it for a higher gear coming out of the turn,” Tom said. There are lots of stock parts on the old AJS. The main changes folks made back then were handlebars and tires. Then go race. There are some aftermarket parts from back in the days when Jerry raced it. A magneto protector is there to

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

shield it from rocks and water. The Prince of Darkness Lucas Magneto is on the front of the engine behind the tire. It has an overlay sprocket since the stock sprocket was part of the brake drum and not switchable. It may not sound like much, but the bike Sponsored by Iron Horse Werks, Dade City, Florida, makes 22 horsepower all hopped up. That was on the dyno at Cyclemania. Stock the bike was 18 hp. The cool thing though is it makes 41 foot pounds of torque. That will pull you out of a turn real hard. Tom’s AJS is the only older long-stroke engine at the races.

17

70 years. That presents a challenge for Tom since he refuses to modernize the machine. Wants to race it just like his Dad did. Yes, there have been some minor changes to electrical components. He could build the motor with modern lightweight parts but then it will rev higher and need more maintenance. Even the clutch has needed little maintenance since Jerry modified it to run eight instead of six plates. I’m so glad guys like Tom still race these machines. As our afternoon overlooking the river wound down he told me one more story. “When I first showed up to race in the novice class a guy recognized the bike. He said you can’t race novice. You grew up on a race track. I don’t care if you’ve never officially been on the throttle of a flat track bike, you start in intermediate. During the race, he ran me off the track twice. And I still had a blast. Great racing a little bumping,” Tom said. “Well, my Dad wasn’t known as the nicest racer. So, I found out why this guy wanted to run ‘That AJS’ off the track. When he was a 16-year-old kid getting into racing in Michigan, my Dad may have kinda caused him some problems and run him off the track a few times. He had wanted to stuff ‘That AJS with a Rhodes on it’ for 35 years.’ So, he finally got to. He had a blast and didn’t make me mad. We’re pretty good friends now.”

And I mean long at 96 mm with an 86 mm bore. So, spectators sometimes comment on why Tom’s bike ain’t running as fast or well as the others since he turns fewer revolutions per minute. But that’s how it works best. Low RPM torque pulls. Part of why the motor has survived for so long and still runs so strong. The same bike has been raced by the same family for nearly

Matt Smith Wins Third NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Title

Story by Alan Dockery Photos by Kenneth Charlton t came down to the final round of the final race of the year, for Matt Smith to secure his third National Hot Rod Association Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Motorcycle World Championship at the NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Matt, from King, NC, faced defending world champion Eddie Krawiec, who was the nearest championship contender just a handful of points behind. Winner of that round and the race would be the champion. Matt had been quick and lucky all weekend and rode his Elite Motorsports, DENSO Auto Parts, Eric Buell Racing machine to a 6.765 at 201.22 pass for the win. This is his first world championship title since 2013. During the weekend, Matt joined the 200 Miles Per Hour Club posting a few passes over that magic number. He set a new speed record in the twowheel category by going 201.65 mph.

Us fans watching the California race on TV back here were nervous all day as Matt was running quick and dodging some back luck. First round he was real slow down the track, but his competition and wife Angie Smith broke at the starting line. “Man, we went through a lot today,” Matt said. “With the airline breaking in the first round and in the second round the transmission broke on us going through the lights. My guys did their job and we fixed all of the stuff that broke and ended up putting up three 200 mph runs today. We are having the time of our life right now though.” The popular Carolina racer’s championship season had four event victories with three race wins during the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship. Matt locked in five Number One qualifying positions and one runner-up finish. Part of what makes Matt’s championship special is how badly his season started. He started the Pro Stock Motorcycle season at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Florida riding someone else’s motorcycle. That relationship ended at the Spring Charlotte race when Matt had to scramble to put together one of his old bikes just to make the race.

Wreaths Across America

By: Rick Gammons ecember 15th was a day of remembering and honor for the veterans of VFW 9899 in High Point (Archdale). Wreaths Across America is in its 13th year nationally as a tribute to honor and remember and to teach the American public about the contribution of every veteran who ever served this country, from the Revolutionary War the present. Veterans include mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. Each one wrote a check for their service, up to and including their life... and many times, that check was cashed. Every December, we should all become spokes people for our war dead. This year the theme was “Be Their Witness”. We need to teach others the value of freedom by each soldier’s sacrifice. This year, twelve honored members of the local VFW drove to Trinity Memorial Cemetery in Trinity, NC to lay wreaths on the graves of America’s heroes, from as far back as the Spanish - American War. These vets were Bill Robertson,

D

Danny Mabe, Mike Bullard, Beth Brown, James Tate, Lonnie Burtchfield, Bobby Brown, Dennis Peele, Henry Stevenson, Dale Bennett, Steven “Johnson” Rion, and Eric Everette. Rick Stevenson led us to the cemetery. This is a yearly event, and is gaining ground all across America. The veterans of VFW 9899 want to see more and more. Help them to educate others (especially our children) about the sacrifices they made to keep us free. Please become part of this project in the future. Robinette’s Birthday At Tilley H-D Statesville

Story by Alan Dockery Photo by Ralph Church s many of the motorcycle dealerships get new owners and modernize, it’s always a pleasure to spend time at the family-owned shops like Tilley Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC. Especially when Robinette Tilley stops by for some birthday cake. Mid-January for years has been when folks stop by Tilley’s to say happy birthday to Don and Robinette. Since Don’s passing, it seems even more special to see Robinette at the shop. Old friends and NASCAR stars and other racers usually are there to hang out for the afternoon. “It was a great day despite the bad weather,” said Terry Levan. “Lots of long-time friends and customers came out to wish Robinette a happy birthday and share some fantastic stories about Don.” Stop in at Tilley H-D and see Terry for a new bike or the ladies in Motorclothes cause riding season is coming soon.

Windjammer’s 30th Annual Toy Run By Wally Wersching n Saturday, December 15th, the Windjammers Motorcycle Club held their 30th Annual Toy Run for the Cleveland County Children’s Homes. There was a real air of anticipation. Everyone in the area looks forward to the Windjammers Toy Run. It’s a time to meet old friends, and to make new ones, too. The weather was suspect for the whole week. Winter storm Diego dropped a lot of snow on Shelby the Sunday before. It stayed cold all week so that the snow wasn’t melting very fast. Then on Friday, it rained all day. Saturday came, and everybody was looking at the radar to see if it was going to be a wet run. God again was watching over the run. The rain held off, and there was just a little mist at times, but the roads were wet, and the grass was soggy and muddy. The Windjammer’s toy run experience consists of breakfast starting at 7:30am at the clubhouse with lots of hot coffee, donuts, homemade sausage, and liver mush biscuits. The gathering place is the Cleveland Mall in Shelby. The police escorted run goes to one of the Cleveland County Homes – Aaron’s House, west of Shelby in Latimore. Afterwards, it’s back to the clubhouse for free BBQ and fixin’s with a live band later in the evening. This year, it was the local band “PeacePipe” rocking the Windjammers’ clubhouse. This year, the Windjammers raffled off a classic 1987 Harley FatBoy with less than 10,000 miles on it. All the proceeds from the raffle, and T-Shirt sales

O

along with many the other events held by the Windjammers during the year go to the Children’s Homes. I arrived at the Windjammers clubhouse at about 10:30am. The club members were gathering to have breakfast, and get ready for the day’s run. Everybody was thankful that it wasn’t raining. The roads were wet but that would be OK if they started to dry out as the day progressed. The club members left for the Cleveland Mall as a group at about 11:00am. About 11:30am, the bikes started congregating at the Cleveland Mall. The military truck that would be filled with the toys was sponsored by the local US Marine Corps group. After noon, the large parking lot slowly filled with bikers. It’s always a lot of fun. Many old friends were there shaking hands, and hugging each other in friendly greetings. I saw some old friends that I only see during Toy Runs. Many that I talked with were driving – not riding their bikes. They couldn’t get them to the road from their sheds. The grass was too soft or their yard was under water. They still brought toys for the kids though. There were many clubs, and biker ministries represented at the run. All brought toys strapped to their bikes. Some were in costume, and others had their bikes decorated in the Christmas spirit. The most unusual club at the event was the “We Dem Boyz” scooter club from Shelby with three members present. It was good to see other clubs at the event. A local biker lawyer had a tent where they were giving away items at the spin of the wheel. I won a T-Shirt with his logo on the back. Most of the other items to win were little things with his name on them. I left a few minutes before the run pulled out of the mall to get to the home before they do, so I could take pictures as they rode in. At exactly 1:00pm, (after the pre-ride briefing and prayer) the command to fire-‘em-up goes out, and the parade starts heading toward the heart of Shelby - the Court Square with a police escort. Once it starts, there are motorcycles as far as the eye can see, and the roar is almost deafening as they pass.

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

When I arrived at the home, I noticed that there were a lot of children on the porch waiting for the bikers to arrive. I asked about Miss Margie, and they said that she was riding in the parade for the first time. This would be the last Toy Run with her as the manager of the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County. She’s retiring at the first of the new year. She has been the guiding force for the Children’s Homes for many years. I know that she will be missed. As the bikes rolled in, they couldn’t park in the grass in front of the home so they parked across the road in the Victory Church parking lot. The military truck parked in the driveway in front of the home so that everybody could unload it, and walk the toys into the home. It was a very festive event. Some of the people who brought a gift into the home had tears in their eyes. Everybody had a smile on their face. It’s always a pleasure to be part of any Toy Run especially the Windjammers - because we get to meet the children. This year every biker got a “Thank-You” note, and a candy-cane from the children for bringing the gifts. That’s why I haven’t missed one since the Windjammers started on December 17, 1989. I plan on going to all the future ones as long as I am able. As I walked through the line of bikers carrying the toys inside, a story came out about an accident during the run. It involved three bikes that went down on Rte. 74, about halfway to the home. That’s all anyone knew. After the toys were dropped off, many of the bikers quickly

27

left to get an early start on the BBQ at the clubhouse but most continued to mingle in front of the home as though they didn’t want it to end. For the Windjammers, next year’s toy run starts the day after this year’s toy run. The club members work all year so that the next toy run will be the best ever. It’s all worth it to know that there will be toys for the children on Christmas Day, and extra money for the essentials of being an average kid throughout the year. Ever since the 1992 Toy Run, the Windjammers Toy Runs have given over $500,000 to the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County which has been used to give the children a more normal life. Considering the cold wet weather, this year’s run was a relatively good one with an estimated 200 bikes. Over $16,000 was donated to the Children’s Homes by the Windjammers. I left before the truck was empty, and on my way home, I passed the scene of the accident. There were three bikes, three bikers, and three police cars – no ambulances. It didn’t look like there were any serious injuries other than some scraped paint and scratched chrome - which was a good thing. That’s why we have insurance. There had never been any accident during the Windjammers Toy Run before. It had to be the slippery road conditions that caused this one. When I got home, Cindy and I went out for a delicious late lunch. It was a very fulfilling day.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 21st Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre Daytona, Valentine’s Day, Oyster Roast, And Party By: Mark Infield anuary has been rather nasty in the weather department this year. We have had the cold weather, rain and the snow in different parts of the Carolinas, but hopefully that’s all behind us now. Our crew went to the Easyriders Bike Show and it was great to see everyone again this year. Now I want to give you a “heads up” on a party that you do not have to pay to get in – The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 21st Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre Daytona, Valentine’s Day, Oyster Roast, and Party. Since the weather is almost always awful, we call it the Fear Of February Party. We have had rain, sideways blowing snow, and lately some pretty nice days, so the tradition continues with the 21st attempt. This year’s Fear Of February party will be hosted by Xtreme Wings -N- Things at 3411 Myer Lee Dr. in Winston-Salem, NC. Xtreme Wings is the upstairs portion of the Smokin’

J

Harley-Davidson building. Chad and Brandee of Xtreme Wings have hosted a ton of great biker events and we are confident that this is a great venue for our 21st Attempt FOF party. Xtreme boasts multiple pool tables, ample seating, indoor and outdoor music stage areas and a beautiful fully stocked bar. Xtreme carries full ABC permits and will make sure your thirst is quenched. Three music acts have been signed to keep the party rocking all day. Solo artist Chris McPeck and a music duo Double Down will get the day started and veterans of rock, Fair Warning, will bring the party home. This year, as in the past couple of years, the Karney Law Firm and Smokin’ Harley-Davidson will sponsor the 1000 lbs of oysters for the party. We will have some raw and will steam the rest, the oysters are first come first served, so grab some while they are hot! Karney Law Firm will be set up with some “Karney Girls” handing out their 2019 calendar. If you haven’t picked one up yet, you won’t want to miss out. Hayes Jewelers “The King Of Diamonds” of Lexington sponsors the diamond heart pendant and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is responsible for the 55” 4K Flat Screen TV that will go home with some lucky

person. Our “Deal of the Day”, is an event t-shirt and 5 raffle tickets, will be available, too. These ALWAYS sell out, so be sure get yours early. We always bring “Little Orifice Annie” along and play a bike game called “Hitter In The Shitter”. The object is to give Annie a poke with a pool noodle from a moving motorcycle. I

think you get the idea. If you haven’t seen this one, you gotta be there. We even provide a mini bike so everyone who wants to can play. This year we are adding a few events to the day. We will have our first ever Fear Of February bike show that will be hosted by Smokin’ Harley-Davidson down the hill from Xtreme. There will be 2 classes: People’s Choice and a Judged class. You can vote for the People’s choice bike winner with white Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine raffle tickets that you get with every purchase from Xtreme or Smokin’. You can vote as many times as you want, just go buy another drink or entrée from Xtreme or any merchandise from Smokin’. There will be plaques awarded for both classes and the Judged class winner will win a photo shoot and 2 page spread in the Caroli-

29

nas’ Full Throttle Magazine! The bike show hours will be from 3-5:30. We will also be featuring a Burnout Contest sponsored by The Rebel Spirit. Zach and Kristin from TRS are bringing their mobile burnout pit to see who can burn some rubber! The winner will take home a custom made trophy and all participants can take advantage of a tire special at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. Burn out contest participants can show us how it’s done in the pit and then get a new tire at 30% off with a $50 installation (+taxes and fees). So have no fear! There are several motels nearby, so come on and have a big time. Spend the night and do not worry about getting home or a DUI. Consider this your personal invitation to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February, 21st Attempt, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party, and Oyster Roast. We say attempt because each year, we attempt to pull this off and so far we have been successful 20 out of 21 times. This is an adult party. Everyone is welcome EXCEPT if you are under 21 years old. All of this, and, if we are lucky, moderate temperatures and some sunshine, will make the premiere riding season kick off event one huge party. We always say, “Sometimes the weather is bad, but the party is always great!” So no matter if you come on your bike or in your car, just come! It is always great to see people that we haven’t seen since the last toy run and some we haven’t seen since the last Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party, and Oyster Roast.

Tyler Wilson Takes AMRA Pro Fuel Title Story and photo by Alan Dockery yler Wilson, Walnut Cove, NC, is the 2018 National Champion in the American Motorcycle Racing Association Pro Fuel class. These are the Harley V-Twin-type, nitromethane-burning machines that y’all love to see and hear roar down the drag strip. The champ has been involved in drag racing all his life with relatives who are multiple national champs in other series. Rickie Smith is Tyler’s uncle. Rickie is a well-known Pro Stock and Pro Mod racer and champion, plus being Matt Smith’s dad. Matt is our Carolina hero who has won the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle National Championship three times. Tyler locked up the title at the last AMRA race of the season at Rockingham Dragway, soon after hurricane Michael soaked the area and knocked out power for many thousands of people. “What a great weekend,” Tyler said. “Made it to the finals, finished runner up, but won the championship. A big thanks to Michael Ray for flying in from Texas to help us, along with Steve Vickers who also took time out of his weekend to help as well. And a huge thanks to Josh Sell who kept all our food cold at home because we had no power,

T

the best neighbor ever.” Tyler has been seriously drag racing for almost 20 years. “In 2010 I bought a Suzuki from my cousin Matt Smith, which I ran in the 5.60 bike class,” Tyler said. “That summer I took that bike to Farmington drag strip every weekend. Then two years later I bought a Pro Mod, raced it for about a year.”

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

Growing up in a small North Carolina town, Tyler learned early to work for things. In 1972, his dad started Wilson Concrete Finishers, Inc. and he was working from the time he was old enough. When his dad retired in 2008, Tyler took over the business. “In 2013, I went to Rockingham Dragway and took Johnny Vickers Pro Fuel Motorcycle School. I rented one of his school bikes for several races and decided I had to have one. So, in 2015 Johnny built my Vickers Hawaya Racing Derringer engine Pro Fueler,” Tyler said. 2016 was the first full year for Tyler on the Pro Fuel machine and his first national championship. Manufacturers Cup is mainly imports, but the Pro Fuel Class is where the Harleys shine. These are the smaller nitromethane-fueled drag race bikes with 121 cubic inch engines, single-speed no transmission and gravity fed carburetor. “This past year was such an awesome year,” Tyler said. “I attended seven races went to five finals and won three with one race being rained out. I brought home the championship in the Pro Fuel class for the AMRA. “I basically sponsor myself so I would like to say a huge thank you to Lucas Oil for providing me with product for the

33

last two years. This is such a tremendous help. I also want to thank Hawaya Racing for all their support. And Thanks to Billy Collins and Michael Ray for coming and helping me this year, could not have done it without you guys. I look forward to the 2019 racing year and possibly some Top Fuel in my near future,” Tyler said.

His Laboring Few Christmas Meal Outreach

By David Burnette n Christmas Day, His Laboring Few Biker Ministry delivered over 2000 hot meals to the area handicapped and disabled who were unable to get out or didn’t have the ability or funds to cook for themselves. It was awesome to see their smiling faces as we delivered their food to them. They were very grateful to get it. We delivered meals all over the triad area. We sent around 90 meals to a store in Salisbury near the VA hospital who then distributed the meals to families who were visiting loved ones that were in the hospital. By the way veterans, thank you for your sacrifice and God bless you all. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication and support to pull this off every year. Preacher Steve wanted to give a big thanks to all who gave financial support, and to all the ones that worked so hard cooking and preparing the meals. We know it took over a week to get all the turkeys cooked and deboned. Also, thanks to all the volunteers that came out and helped serve and deliver the food. There are too many people to name, you know who you are, so we’ll just say thank you all so much. We couldn’t do it without you. His Laboring Few does this every year, not only at Christmas but Thanksgiving as well. The way people find out about it is through word of mouth, local newspaper ads and some-

Twisted Covenant MSC Shares Christmas Spirit Story by: Kathy Dagenhart Photos by: Alan Dockery t was a beautiful cool Saturday morning as members and guests of Twisted Covenant MSC (TCMSC) gathered to load a pickup with toys, clothes, bicycles and food, all to share the Christmas spirit with a family we have never met. Nobody but mom knew we were coming to help with the surprise. We entered the apartment community to see two young boys’ eyes light up as they began to wave. Little did they know it was them we were there to see! Lead by “Rudolph”, a row of motorcycles, and there he was, Santa with Mrs. Clause on a Harley Tri Glide making a grand entrance. It didn’t take long for all the area kids to know that the Big Guy was on the scene. Twisted Covenant is just that - always there to lend a helping, caring hand to those in need. It is what our goal and mission is, and will always be. We want to be viewed as a positive part of our community and support our families, country, flag, military and veterans, our Maker, community and those in need. We are all for brotherhood and sisterhood and doing it all from the seat of our Harleys. Our club patch, “Twisted”, refers to twisted knots in the shield. The “Covenant” means a bond, and our Celtic Shield was used by warriors. The knots in the shield represents protection where men and women both used this shield in battle, not wearing armor, but leather. Riding together, having fun together, and looking out for each other as brothers, sisters, family and friends is what it’s all about. We are partnered with Children’s Advocacy & Protection Center of Catawba County, riding for you, and B.A.C.A. as our charities of choice.

My Retirement Letter

By: Grant Eagle n the late 90’s, I tried my hand at covering biker events. I had been a rider for more than 20 years. I love to share my side of the story with readers and tell them what I really thought of the rally or event. I started with the “Independent Biker” out of Charlotte, NC. I found me a niche that I really enjoyed. In the late 90’s the “Independent Biker” magazine came to an end. It was the ‘hey days’ of Harley-Davidson and everyone was buying a bike. (Most to make a buck off resale) Many, many biker magazines came and went, but Mark and Molly came to the game with Full Throttle of the Carolinas. It was a huge hit. I jumped at the chance to sell advertising and write, which is my favorite. Now after more than 20 years, with Full Throttle I’m calling it quits. I still love riding, but I have run out of time to hit the businesses and sell and to make events that at one time I never missed. Wow, what I have seen in the last 20 years of biker community. Maybe the biggest is Myrtle Beach Rally at one time being USA-wide known. Then they tried their best to run off ALL bikers by enacting laws as City-only helmet laws and limiting permits for vendors. Now Myrtle Beach rally is only a shadow of what it once was. It will never return to what it was, in my opinion. Daytona tried to limit biker events and quickly found out the worst. Overnight, Daytona apologized and began

a ‘welcome back campaign’ that worked and Daytona is as always has been a force in the biker events. (What MB should have done to bring back the dollars). As the RUB’s (Rich Urban Bikers) sold their bikes at a loss because H-D flooded the markets, some just wanted to ride. What I would call real bikers/riders were still many in the areas. Christian Clubs, Outlaw Clubs and H.O.G. clubs are now the norm at all biker events. We have learned we die as individuals but survive as one. Everyone looks forward to retiring, I have, but I seem to have less time for all things I enjoy. My United States Air Force career, then my Concord City Fire Department career and now only a year of my Ameri Gas career is nearing its end, as is my part time career with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. I laugh when I think part time as 20 years. I love Full Throttle and agree it’s a direct link to all things biker. With FT, you know who really wants your business, if they take the time to spend their advertising dollars with FT. I may pen an event in the upcoming years, but with this article I say farewell to my friends, businesses, and riders who have told me EXACTLY what they thought of some of my articles. LOL. I’m still out there. I leave you with my favorite quote that I tell: “The world is a book, Those that do not travel read but only a page”-- St. Augustine. Now is the time for my love and I to see what else we can see. Aloha! Editors’ Note: Grant’s contribution to the magazine and his friendship will be sorely missed. The staff of FTOC sends him our best wishes and we hope he enjoys retirement. See ya out there!

U.S. Senate Passes Motorcyclist Anti-Profiling Resolution By Unanimous Consent

Survey: Half of motorcyclists say they have been profiled by law enforcement ICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association expresses its deep appreciation to the U.S. Senate, which adopted a resolution Tuesday promoting awareness of motorcyclist profiling and encouraging collaboration and communication with the motorcycling community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling. Senate Res. 154 also urges state law enforcement officials to condemn motorcyclist profiling in their policies and training materials. Senate resolutions do not have the force of law. “In 2015, Congress wisely acted to ban federal highway funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints, recognizing that federal funds are better spent on promoting highway safety for all vehicles and drivers,” said AMA Vice President of Government Relations Wayne Allard. “Now, the Senate has taken a big step further to help end the discriminatory and ineffective practice of profiling motorcyclists.” The bipartisan resolution, sponsored by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), was co-sponsored by Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Michael D. Crapo (R-Idaho), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Angus King (I-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska). As adopted, the resolution recognizes the significant increase in motorcycle registrations during the past 20 years, and points out that half of

P

motorcyclists surveyed believe they have been profiled by law enforcement at least once. The resolution also acknowledges that motorcyclist profiling occurs across the nation. Profiling means the illegal use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related apparel as a factor when law enforcement officers decide to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest or search a person or vehicle with or without a legal basis. In January 2017, the AMA Board of Directors adopted a formal position statement on motorcyclist profiling, see www. americanmotorcyclist.com/About-The-AMA/motorcyclistprofiling. The AMA continues to recommend law enforcement and highway officials focus their efforts on encouraging highway safety in ways that make America’s roads safer for everyone. About the American Motorcyclist Association: Founded in 1924, the AMA is a not-for-profit memberbased association whose mission is to promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycling. As the world’s largest motorcycling rights and event sanctioning organization, the AMA advocates for riders’ interests at all levels of government and sanctions thousands of competition and recreational events every year. The AMA also provides money-saving discounts on products and services for its members. Through the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio, the AMA honors the heroes and heritage of motorcycling. For more information, visit www.americanmotorcyclist.com. Not a member? Spokes & Jokes

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

A man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by.
He gets into the taxi, and the cabbie says, ‘Perfect timing. You’re just like Frank.’ Passenger: ‘Who? Cabbie: ‘Frank Fieldsman. He’s a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happened like that to Frank
Fieldsman every single time. Passenger: ‘There are always a few clouds over everybody.’ Cabbie: ‘Not Frank Fieldsman. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the grand slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star and you should have
heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy.’ Passenger: ‘Sounds like he was something really special.’ Cabbie: ‘There’s more. He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody’s birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But Frank Fieldsman, could do everything right.’ Passenger: ‘Wow, some guy then.’ Cabbie: ‘He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Frank, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too. He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Frank Fieldsman.’ Passenger: ‘An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?’ Cabbie: ‘Well, I never actually met Frank. He died and I married his wife.’

has spread a rumor that I belong to the Ku Klux Klan. This is a horrible lie and one that a Christian community cannot tolerate. I am embarrassed and do not intend to accept this. Now, I want the party who did this to stand and ask forgiveness from God and this Christian Family.” No one moved. The preacher continued, “Do you have the nerve to face me and admit this is a falsehood? Remember, you will be forgiven and in your heart you will feel glory. Now stand and confess your transgression.” Again all was quiet. Then slowly, a drop-dead gorgeous blonde with a body that would stop traffic rose from the third pew. Her head was bowed and her voice quivered as she spoke, “Reverend there has been a terrible misunderstanding. I never said you were a member of the Ku Klux Klan. I simply told a couple of my friends that you were a wizard under the sheets.” The preacher fell to his knees, his wife fainted, and the congregation roared.

Two informally dressed ladies happened to start up a conversation during an endless wait in the LAX airport. The first lady was an arrogant California woman married to a wealthy man. The second was a well-mannered elderly woman from the South. When the conversation centered on whether they had any children, the California woman started by saying, “When my first child was born, my husband built a beautiful mansion for me.” The lady from the South commented, “Well, isn’t that precious?” The first woman continued, “When my second child was born, my husband bought me a beautiful Mercedes-Benz.” Again, the lady from the South commented, “Well, isn’t that precious?” The first woman continued boasting, “Then, when my third child was born, my husband bought me this exquisite diamond bracelet. Yet again, the Southern lady commented, “Well, isn’t that precious?” The first woman then asked her companion, “What did your husband buy for you when you had your first child?” “My husband sent me to charm school,” declared the Southern lady. “Charm school?” the first woman cried, “Oh, my God! What on earth for?” The Southern lady responded, “Well for example, instead of saying, “Who gives a shit?” I learned to say, “Well, isn’t that precious”.

Do you know that when a woman wears a leather dress, a man’s heart beats quicker, his throat gets dry, he gets weak in the knees, and he begins to think irrationally? Ever wonder why? It’s because she smells like a new truck.

Seems a guy cruises thru a stop sign and gets pulled over by a local policeman. Guy hands the cop his driver’s license, insurance verification, plus his
concealed carry permit. “Okay, Mr. Smith,” the cop says, “I see you have a concealed carry permit. Are you carrying today?” “Yes, I am” “Well then, better tell me what you got.” Smith says, “Well, I got a .357 revolver in my inside coat pocket. There’s
a 9mm semi-auto in the glove box. And, I’ve got a .22 magnum derringer in my right boot.” “Okay,” the cop says. “Anything else?” “Yeah, back in the trunk, there’s an AR15 and a shotgun. That’s about
it.” “Mr. Smith, are you on your way to or from a gun range?”

“Nope.” “Well then, what are you afraid of?” “Not a damn thing.”

I met a fairy today that said she would grant me one wish. “I want to live forever,” I said. “Sorry” said the fairy, “I’m not allowed to grant wishes like that!” “Fine,” I said, “I want to die after the Politicians get their heads out of their asses!” “You An Alabama preacher said to his congre- crafty bastard,” said the fairy. gation, “Someone in this congregation

I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same snake with two more frogs in his mouth.

Joker Powersports Customer Appreciation Christmas Party

By: David Burnette n Saturday December 22nd, I went down to Joker Powersports located off exit 106 on I-85 in Blacksburg, SC for their Customer Appreciation Christmas party. I was accompanied by a few friends associated with His Laboring Few Biker Ministry. When we got there, several bikes were parked around the parking lot. We went inside to find several different bikers roaming around checking out the bike inventory; there were several to choose from. As I was standing there, a guy was drawing a card from a deck and I asked what he won and found out that he won $400 cash back on his purchase. That’s a pretty cool Christmas gift. As we looked around, we saw Santa sitting off to the side where kids of all sizes were taking turns sitting on his lap getting their picture made. Some of those kids might have been older than Santa. Lol. Hope everyone got their Christmas wish. There was an ugly Christmas sweater contest going on. I’m not sure who won but John, the owner, was wearing a pretty ugly one! ;)lol. We had a pretty good time hanging out with old friends and

Gaston CBA Polar Bear Run

By Wally Wersching n Saturday January 5th, the Gaston County Concerned Bikers Association (CBA) held their annual Polar Bear Run to benefit the Gaston CBA legislative and charitable work. This year’s run was dedicated to the memory of Gaston CBA member Mickey Seigler. He rode last year’s run. Before heading home, he stopped by Good Time Charlie’s, and he never made it home. Mickey wrecked his bike on Rte. 321 South. Unfortunately, he passed away several days later. I heard that he was a great guy, and is surely missed. I never met him, but he had a lot of friends. The run started at the Country Kitchen in Dallas, NC with the first bike out at 11:00AM. The dice hands cost $15.00 which included a meal ticket for food at the last stop. The five stops were the Country Kitchen in Dallas, Metrolina Motorsports in Kings Mountain, Rt. 55 Country Store and Grill in Clover, Indian Motorcycle in Lowell, and it ended at Cavendish Brewery in Gastonia. The whole run should take about 2 hours to complete (depending on the time spent at each stop). The five locations were on the back of the Dice Hand score sheet. There were no directions to get to the stops or a map so that someone from out of town or unfamiliar with the stops would have to tag along with a group that knew the way. Dice Runs are a great way to learn about the area, and travel new roads, even if you get lost along the way. They had some great raffle prizes including 2 Carolina HD shirts (1 man’s, and 1 lady’s). Everyone who completed all the stops also had a chance to win $100. I awoke early on Saturday – eager for the fun to start. My first stop was the Crestview Baptist Church for their monthly “First Saturday” all you can eat breakfast. As usual it was delicious. At about 9:30, I headed to Dallas. I took the back-road way through Bessemer City rather than the I85 to Rte. 321 route. It’s less hectic, and the scenery is much nicer. I arrived at the Country Kitchen at about 10:15, and didn’t expect to see many bikes. The lot was already half full of bikes. I walked inside the restaurant to drop off a stack of Full

O

Throttle magazines at the registration table. I was surprised to see the little restaurant almost full of bikers having breakfast. As I walked around, more and more bikers rode in. It was such a beautiful morning that nobody wanted to miss this event. There was a Polaris SlingShot parked in the lot with a child’s car seat in the passenger seat. I wondered who was riding in it. Later I saw the young girl with her earmuffs. She was dressed for the cold and wind. There are no doors in the SlingShot so it’s pretty windy. Many of the bikers gathered around a picture of Mickey while people took pictures. I could see that there were many people with tears in their eyes remembering him. As 11:00 came, they gathered again to say a prayer before the ride. Then people left in small groups heading to the first stop. I left, and backtracked the way I came. I was following a small group as they went through Bessemer City toward Metrolina Motorsports. When they turned left to get into the parking lot, I continued straight to get on Rte. 74 to head home. I arrived home about noon, and then Cindy and I went out for a delicious lunch. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning with friends - old and new.

Feelings

ros and Bro-ettes, Questions: How are we doing with the New Year so far? Any changes made that we have kept? A lot of things happened over the past year, some good some bad. But it’s up to us how we take them and what we do about them. A lot of feelings hurt, it’s not coming from our friends or socalled friends, a lot of Christians’ mouths can be their worst enemy. Don’t even think that you have done something so bad that God can’t forgive you that’s not right. That’s what the Devil wants you to think. God is a loving God. When we ask for forgiveness and get saved, all our sins are forgiven as far as the East is from the West. The highest rank we can ever have with the Lord is serving Him. You need to get your light shining and start doing what the Lord wants you to do. Stop letting people get the best of you, and taking your joy away. Don’t try to outshine your light, just do what God asks you to do. It’s not about where we go to minister, or how many tracts we give out or how many we feed. It’s about going out and loving people and telling them about Jesus and His love for them. It doesn’t matter if it’s at church, in the clubs, bars, or under a tent, even in the streets, you pray about it and let the Lord send you where you need to go. Some of your so-called Christians might want to tell you where to go but always listen

to the Lord, and go where He sends you, and don’t let your light try to outshine anyone. James 4: 14. “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are like a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.”

Bulldog Tip: Understanding The Apex Of A Turn

M

otorcycles, unlike cars, have the advantage of being able to find their best “line” while taking a curve or turn. When you choose your line you should visualize not only your entrance and exit, but also the middle point that is the top of your curve. This is called apexing and there are 3 basic ways to apex a corner; early, normal, and late. The safety of each varies depending on the situation. Understanding the basic concept behind all three will allow you to apply this information when riding. Early Apex – leaning into the corner too early. This places the motorcycle closest to the inside of the turn early, and forces a sharper turn near the end of the corner to straighten out. This type of apex will give a rider the lowest exit speed, but this can be dangerous in a blind corner because it can send you into the oncoming lane accidentally. You might be forced to take this kind of line to get around something in the road (especially if you like riding in the mountains), so it’s good to be familiar with it. Normal Apex – most common for a normal, relaxed ride. The turn-in point and the end of the line are equally distant from the center of the corner making the entry and exit form a consistent arc. This is the line that will “straighten out” a curve the most for a motorcycle.

It will also provide the most traction throughout. Late Apex - most aggressive way to navigate a curve and provides the highest exit speed. Turning-in late provides a slower entry speed but with a fairly straight shot through the corner resulting in the highest exit speed possible. This allows the rider to see farther through the corner before turning, so in many instances this is the safest method from a visibility standpoint. Information provided by LateralG. org. While it’s good to understand proper apexing techniques, turns you encounter on the road might not be as straightforward and easily maneuvered as the ones described above. Be informed, but use your instincts and make the right decisions for your circumstances. Being aware of your surroundings is vital to staying safe on the road. Unfortunately, even the safest riders have accidents. If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle accident, contact Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers at 877376-7982. From accident through recovery, we’ve got your back.

Tipsy Rockin Christmas Party By: Rick Gammons ecember 15th was an evening to let it all out at the Tipsy Crow Bar. People were showing up early for this one. Lots of friends, lots of food, and lots of Davis Tucker as the evening’s entertainment. Christmas at the Tipsy Crow is something to see. This is a place where a lot of locals go, but they readily accept visitors. They will become a ‘local’ there soon. We got there around 4 pm and the food was already disappearing. We walk in and everybody told us to “get some, there’s plenty”. We went around and visited with buds for a while, then went after the food. And it was true, there was plenty... all homemade and it was good, just another perk for the hometown bar. People ate, then talked, then ate, then played pool, then ate... you get the picture. Later in the evening, Davis Tucker (intense local talent) began his set. It wasn’t long before it was a sing along, including songs by David Allen Coe, George Jones and Conway Twitty. The music continued on and I know everyone had a great time reveling right before Christmas. This happens at the Tipsy Crow Bar. Come by and see for

D

yourself. If you are out of town, make a point to find it. If you are local, you should have been by before now. Come on out to 215 Berkley Street, High Point, NC, or 336 991 5052, call and find out what is going on.
