2nd motorcycle was made. Motorcycle events and rallies were originated around racing. We are supporters of motorcycle racing on all levels and proud to be featuring the All Harley World Shootout on the cover of the February 2024 cover. Paul Watson of Lumbee Racing has been putting on a circuit of All Harley World Shootout events for a number of years and the competition is top notch. Paul puts on one hell of a show featuring live music, camping, vendors and several classes of racing. Check out the race schedule on page 7 and pick out a couple races, the season kicks off April 12-13 at Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, NC. The Cruisin’ Calendar is starting to beef up as well. We are planning out our spring and summer and are looking for some new events to check out and some new roads to ride. Got any suggestions? We are already booked for the Outer Banks Bike Week April 20-28. This is a great event in a beautiful setting. We’ve got a ride on Friday from OBX H-D to Avon, NC and the Full Throttle Bike Show will be at the dealership on Saturday April 27th. The whole schedule for the rally will be out soon and it’s worth the ride!

Inside this issue, we’ve got coverage from the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Custom Bike Show from a couple weeks ago. We had a blast and appreciate the near 4000 people who packed the coliseum that day. If you missed the event, read the article to catch up and make plans to be there next year, it’s only gonna get bigger!

spectators, racers, and purse payouts. Hold up fans 2024 is gonna be better! You heard me correctly. We have 6 races this year and we are even going to Xenia, Ohio. Keith Evans and Josh Engle declares this will be the AHWS’s largest event. I am a believer.

We are having the season opener with the Spring Nationals at Farmington Dragway with Smokin Harley-Davidson of Winston Salem as the event sponsor. Impex Auto is one of the season sponsors for this race as well. Gonna be a huge season opener for sure.

We are then headed to Rockingham Dragway for Thunder at the Rock. Harley-Davidson is deep into this one with the Harley-Davidson Southeast Dealership Shootout. Lumbee Racing and Rockingham Dragway are putting up $2000 for the win. Finalist $1200, Runner Up $400, Semi- Finalist $200.

Wow and wow again. Jaybird Cullen and Winterville HarleyDavidson are the kings of the track. Throwdown Jones, Bad Romeo, and THEM are our headline bands for Saturday. We will have the Mini-bikes, Bike games, and the best in Harley racing. Cox Double Eagle Harley-Davidson of Pinehurst is the event sponsor. Grown folks happening Saturday. Book early.

We may not have enough grass. We are expecting thousands of our fans. NC’s own Rally.

Next up is Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson of Fayetteville.

Harleys vs Metrics at Fayetteville Dragstrip. We will be doing Freaky Friday as well. This will be one of the largest events in NC. We will have the most powerful field of Harley’s ever.

Grudge racing at its finest. Only winners need apply. DJ Kevin Hunt will be putting the old school on the turntables and we expect a lot of fun at this event.

CrossRoads Harley-Davidson of Wilkesboro will have a racers paradise at the Battle of the Foothills. This track was hands down one of the Racers favorite tracks last year. Noth-

ing but great comments. Paul Salvatore and his staff is so racer friendly and the track was on point. CrossRoads Harley-Davidson says they are going all out for this event for their fans and I believe them. We will have a band on Friday so our fans get a free concert and a race for the same price.

Harley-Davidson of Xenia, Ohio says it will bring Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virgina, Pennsylvania, and all of the other surrounding states. Ron, KilKare Dragway’s GM, says the track will be prepped for those 300 HP Harleys and told me to bring them. And we will. Band as well on Friday.

Axtell Cylinders Dan Daffner says the media won’t stop with this mega event. He says the winners who win these races will have earned it. It will be a track heavyweight championship every class. Can’t wait.

You can’t have a better AHWS World finals than the Don Tilley Memorial at Farmington Dragway. This event obviously is sponsored by Don Tilley’s son Derek Tilley of Tilley Harley-Davidson of Statesville. The emotions for this race will be off the track as much as on the track. Don Tilley was a pioneer and one of the best in the Harley race world for years. It is an honor for me on a personal level to be part of this event.

Derek has been a huge part of our success and it’s get no better than this partnership.

Anyone who knows me knows it is not about Lumbee Racing but about the Lumbee and Tuscarora Nation in the Carolina’s. I dedicate this cover to my people. I could not and would not be here without the support of friends and family such as Demont Hunt of Riders Ambition and Randy Hardin of Native Eagles. These are my hero’s. They don’t take they give.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Custom Bike Show

veryone wants a shot at the big time, to see

their bike and all their hard work under the lights being studied by a couple thousand people. To go for the big money prize and hear their name announced. The big show is The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Custom Bike Show and 175 bikes competed for $12,500 in prize money on January 13 inside the Greensboro Coliseum. Spectators were greeted by a thirty foot tall Bulldog head inflatable from Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers who were the presenting sponsor of the event. Just pass the bulldog was 60,000sq ft of biker eye candy and industry vendors. No Tupperware or gutter guard’s vendors, but all biker stuff or motorcycle related. Motorcycle Attorneys, biker jewelry, motorcycle tours, chopper photography, biker apparel businesses, biker art, seat upholsters, bike painters, pinstripers, event promotors, tattoo booths, powder coaters, biker churches, custom motorcycle parts fabricators, motorcycle dealers the list goes on. If it was cool and biker related, you could snag the best of the best at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Custom Bike Show! Over 100 vending booths were set up. In the isles between those booths the show bikes were lined up and waiting for inspection. Twenty classes of motorcycles, from mild to wild just waiting to be looked over. There were bikes in there from 1928 all the way up to 2023. The biggest classes were Vintage Choppers, Greasy Choppers and the Antique Class. The Softail and Touring classes were also huge!

But that’s not all, we had Import Antiques, Metric Choppers, Sport Bikes, Radical Baggers, Sportsters, Victory Motorcycle and Indian Motorcycle classes. It was a hugely diverse group of motorcycles. Literally you had perfect representatives of the Shovelhead family six feet from a radical bagger with a 26inch wheel. There were antique Servi-Cars, Side Cars and a Dragbike display!

Slap dab in the middle of the action was legendary bike builder Billy Lane of Choppers Inc. and Sons of Speed Vintage Racing. Billy was the guest of honor for the day, and he

spent the day hanging out with any and everyone who wanted.

Dude was awesome. He took his time to talk to young and old, sign autographs and talk motorcycles for ten straight hours!

He signed shirts, motorcycles, promo pics, posters and even a little girl’s boot! Billy had brought out his famous Shovelhead chopper, “Blue” and parked it outside his booth beside the flathead flat track racer Ebay Jake pilots at the Sons Of Speed Races. These bikes were the center of attention all day as well. Billy’s Sons Of Speed Vintage Racing events are coming back around, starting in Daytona on March 2nd. Racers on the circuit, Ebay Jake and Moonshine Chuck were hanging out in the booth for a while too. It was awesome cause they were just guys at the show. They weren’t hard to approach and gave their time and attention freely.

Across from Billy’s set up, the Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers had their spread. They brought a half dozen lovely CBL ladies to pose for pictures and sign autographs. The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers put out a 12 month calendar with killer bikes draped with ladies and some of the bikes and calendar girls were in attendance. That booth never slowed down! The ladies were signing calendars and posing with their fans all day. Attorney Sean Clayton and Macy Thompson from the Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers were there too, shaking hands and hangin’ out. Indian Motorcycle Greensboro Triad sponsored the show again this year and were just beside the CBL get up. Their isle was filled with custom Indian Motorcycles and Victory Motorcycles. Monty and his gang were handing out Indian Motorcycle swag like it was going out of style! The Law Tigers are another one of our main sponsors and brought out their giant tiger head inflatable, law firm representatives and their 2024 giveaway bike. Law Tigers partnered with the Carolina Hurricanes, Shiny Side Paint and Tobacco Road H-D for the 3rd year to produce a killer custom painted Softail Standard.

Riding High Harley-Davidson came through as a sponsor again this year and put on a H-D fashion show as well. Their models were strutting the latest H-D fashions across the stage at 2pm! OK Recycling rounded out our sponsors for the year.

Tim and his crew brought out some awesome Antique motorcycles to add to the floor!

Ray Spencer with Universal Custom Pinstriping was demonstrating his craft all day long. It’s so cool to have him on board. Even some of the show bikes picked up a little extra custom pinstriping during the day. Tattoos? Yeah, there were tattoos too. Ink Lab Tattoo was set up slinging ink all day long. They had a special flash set for the day and stayed busy for 10 hours! We also had Derek Sikes of In The Weeds Chopper Photography set up on “Chopper Alley” with some killer prints from his adventures in the South East chopper world.

Honestly, I hate not listing all the vendors that were at the show. We had some seriously impressive vendors at the show.

I was told that it was taking folks over 4 hours to just make one pass through the vendors and the bike show bikes, then most of then doubled back to make purchases or vote for their favorite bike for the “People’s Choice” award.

The stage was rockin’ all day as well. Mojo Stomp from Salisbury took the first half of the day and put on a hell of a show. These guys bring home a classic rock blues sound like you wouldn’t believe. We had them play at Mayhem In Midway this past September and had to have them back for the bike show, they are just that good. They played three, thirty minute sets to keep the crowd going. The second half of the day THEM! Rockabilly blew the crowd away with their three, thirty minute sets. THEM! Hails out of Sanford, NC and brought some serious energy to the stage. Folks were tappin’ toes and dancing through the aisles of the bike show. They were slapping that upright bass and wailing on the guitar like nobody’s business. They were a perfect match for the bike show. These two bands did a hell of a job!

Again, this year the bike show was incredibly hard to judge.

There were 175 judged bikes on the floor and each one of them was a potential winner. We had a panel of 5 professional bike show judges that with over 50 years combined in the motorcycle community. We pick apart each and every bike and give them individual scores to come up with first and second place winners in each of the 20 $500 cash prize categories.

This year we had two best in show trophies, one for Antiques and one for Modern motorcycles, each came with the Best In Show Cup and $1000 cash. We also added five new minor categories, just to give away a little extra cash. Best Panhead, Best Shovelhead, Best Knucklehead, People’s Choice and Best Paint. Each carried a plaque and $100 cash prize. The Best Paint award had a little extra prize as Jody Goodwill of SRM Paintworks painted a killer skateboard deck as the prize. The skate deck looked awesome, and everyone wanted it. Huge shoutout to Jody for coming through on that one! Most of the winners squeeked out victories of just one or two points.

Honestly, all the bikes on the floor were awesome and every entry should be proud of their bikes. But as it was, we only had 47 awards to hand out so unfortunately some folks went home empty handed.

The results went like this: Best In Show Modern: Chris Carter – 2005 H-D Deluxe.

Chris’s bike was custom from tire to tire. The entire bike, and I mean the entire bike is covered in exceptional scroll work.

The paint was fantastic and actually won the Best Paint award as well. The engine fins were diamond cut. This bike was low, lean and absolutely Beautiful. Congrats Chris!

Best In Show Antique: Ben Brown – 1928 Harley-Davidson JD. This bike was no doubt best in show in the Antique class. A beautiful cut down version of Harley-Davidson’s JD model. Everything about this bike was perfect, simple and beautiful. Ben hadn’t had the bike out in public in over six years and we were lucky enough to look it over.

Every bike was a show stopper and judging was not an easy thing. It was wild to walk around thinking that we had to pick winners out of this group of bikes. The Sportster class was the strongest Sportster Class I have ever seen with some serious custom jobs. The Softail class hosted some awesome bikes from the Cholo bikes to some really sweet Springers and Fatboy’s. The Radical classes were just that, holy cow these bikes were out there! The Antiques and Choppers remain my favorite classes. It’s the history I believe. This is where the customization began and the preservation of these antique machines is not easy. I love seeing them all. Let me tell you this. I wasn’t the only one that was amazed at the quality and diversity of the bike show. Billy Lane made several comments about the bike show while we were hanging out and even went as far to make his own video of the show. Check it out on his Choppers Inc YouTube page. His video was so cool, I may not even do one myself! More thanks belong to the Full Throttle Magazine crew. We have some really dedicated friends that come out and help us pull off these events. There are too many to list, but we love you all and couldn’t do this without your help. Our friends, sponsors and the biker community came out and made this a really special event. Law Tigers Partners Up To Give Away “Caniacs” Bike The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

year. Every year we are given the opportunity to meet new challenges, see new bikes, go on new rides and reacquaint ourselves with some of our favorite ones. 2024 also brings us into the 3rd year of the Carolina Hurricanes Bike giveaway, brought to you by the Carolina Hurricanes, Tobacco Road Harley Davidson, Shiny Side Paint and the Law Tigers!

We started the first giveaway during the 2021-23 season.

The bike was a 2014 Softail provided by Tobacco Road and given an amazing custom paint job by the incredibly talented people at Toxic Customs. The bike went to a number of events for display and was incredibly well received. I think many of us don’t really get into the giveaways done by so many organizations unless we see the bike in person. Folks just couldn’t get over the paint and the excitement really started to build. During the final home game of the season we took the final 3 finalists out on the ice. In front of a full PNC Arena we announced Dan Nicely as the winner.

Dan is a season ticket holder and an avid biker.

When they entered his name into the computer at Tobacco Road they discovered he had been doing business with them since the Ray Price days. We all were as excited for Dan as he was.

Larry Hunter is the next lucky season ticket holder we need to talk about. Larry is the winner of last year’s PAN AM. The Harley Davidson was provided by Tobacco Road and painted by Ashley from Shiny Side Paint. Knowing the mission of an adventure bike made the paint scheme a bit different from the first year, but Ashley knocked t out of the

park. Larry hadn’t ridden since his chopper days in the late 60’s early 70’s, but he looked that PAN AM in the eye and said “ let’s get it done!”

This year’s bike is a customized new Softail. Again this year the bike is provided by Tobacco Road and painted by Shiny Side. The bike jumps out at you and lets you know it is a Carolina Hurricanes bike! The detail in the paint from Ashley and service technician Jamison Buccola screams a unique Hurricanes and Harley Davidson pride!

This season’s bike will be given away on the ice at PNC on April 5th. If you are one of the 3 finalists you will hang out with us in a suite at PNC. We will watch the game, eat, drink and meet a few Canes celebrities. During one of the intermissions, we roll out on the ice and someone becomes the new oner of this incredible machine. All this costs you is the time and effort to enter. OK, and tax and tags if you win, the government definitely wants “their share.”

spirit lives in the USA and is absolutely exemplified by RickRak. This Concord, NC based motorcycle aftermarket retail giant started with an idea, a need.

Prototypes were made and a company was born in a 10x10 vendor spot that has grown over the last seven years to a company that sets up 30x100 product booths and attends all the major rallies supplying thousands of bikers every week across the nation. I was lucky enough to get some time to sit down with Shane Riffel at his storefront in Concord, NC to talk to him about RickRak. A father and son trip to Sturgis for the Black Hills Rally in 2011 sparked an idea. That at that time was just a fleeting comment. As their first bike rally they rode 4 days out to Sturgis and took in the sites. “We went over to the vendor lot at Black Hills Harley, again never been to a rally, and I wanted to get somethings done to my bike and so we ended up getting some pinstriping done and went somewhere else and so I spent two days getting different things done to our bikes.

In the meantime, Dad and I were like, ‘Man if we could find something that makes some money, we could come out here and set up this would be cool’, and that was all that was said.

Funny how these things start out, eh?

Before they could make their return trip to Sturgis, Shane’s Dad, Rick, suffered a stroke. He recovered well but changed over to a Trike to make the next trip. They made their return trip to Sturgis, but Rick complained that he was having trouble attaching his luggage to his Tour Pak and wondered if there was an easier way. He just wanted a bag that “Clicks on with

no straps, and I’m done”. A quick google search turned up zero results. So, Rick came up with a prototype of what he wanted and Shane, got to work making what would become the RickRak. “So, he had this Idea and kind of explained it and he cut out this white cardboard piece, I still have it in the office, he cut this out he goes I want the bag to slip on and then go down and somehow clamp on. I’ll be honest, I told him it was kind of stupid, it was probably a dumb idea.

The next morning, I got up, I welded up the frame, I got the clamps, I did everything I had to do put his bag on it and I showed him.” Shane explained. It was just what his Dad had envisioned. “I was impressed with how it worked so I made one for myself.” The RickRak luggage bag continues to be one of the company’s best sellers and for good reason. Shane demonstrated attaching the RickRak to the luggage rack on his Street Glide and it was on and secure, without straps, in less than 20 seconds. Pretty genius stuff.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine us, a couple of my buddies and my dad and I and we were doing installs and so on, not only of RickRak products but some other stuff. To see it go from the 10 x 10 to that was like, holy cow, we’re here, we did it! I remember that conversation till this day very, very clear.”

Besides being able to buy all the necessary accessories at the RickRak booths at those major rallies, you can also order their products from Drag Specialties, which was one of the heights of business that Shane and his crew worked hard to achieve. If you want to pick it up yourself, you can even visit RickRak at their store front in Concord, NC. When Shane dove in and started developing RickRak as a business, he built a building on his property that he thought he would use, but the company grew so quickly, he never got a chance to use it before he needed more space. He was then able to secure one bay at a shop that was owned by NASCAR driver David Ragan. The property itself was previously the Ken Schrader racing complex. Shane said, “David bought it from Schrader so I bugged them to rent a bay. I just needed something to park two trailers outside and I need a bay to run my business out of. We were doing rallies and then we had our website.

We’re trying to grow our website to get more online sales and that was the two business aspects we had. We started with a one bay, it turned into a few months we had three bays and then few more months we had four bays and pretty much had a whole building on the complex here, and that would have been 2018.” By 2021 Shane and RickRak owned the whole property. Now they have their store front, a place where people can have accessories added to their bikes or just pick up items they ordered online. “It’s been a dream”, Shane said.

Shane and his crew stand behind the products that they carry as well. “Everything we carry at RickRak is stuff that we use, we like it. This is stuff that we use on the road, at the rallies, when we travel. We pay attention to what we sell and are very picky on what brands we carry. It’s stuff that we use personally,” he said. If you do make it by their shop in Concord, which I recommend you do, make sure you stop in and see Angel, the shop dog as well.

So far, everything that Shane and Rick have touched has turned to gold and they are looking at a very bright future with the RickRak brand. They have a couple new products coming out too. “We’re working on a new headlight, you know everyone likes the baja design headlights, things like that. There’s

going to be some more lighting stuff coming down the road things like that. We’ve got a couple ideas for a different rack and some different bag systems. Some new stuff coming at the shop is that we’ve expanded and we’re doing fat tire installs.

We’re doing more Arlen Ness floorboards, exhaust, we’re doing tuners and cams at the shop now. There’s a lot more we can do here in our shop versus what we do at the rallies. We do want to see the RickRak side grow here, the installs, the showroom, the facility here. We want to see that take off some more.” RickRak has also partnered with Pro-Action Suspension to develop their own brand of RickRak shocks, something that they have worked on for the last couple of years as they

work their way into some more performance oriented products. Whatever it is, I’m sure that the RickRak team will make it a great product. They already have their rallies booked and have upgraded their vendor set up this year to a bigger trailer, so you won’t be able to miss them!

The Legendary Joe Smith Celebrates 83 Years By: Lincoln Infield

ime waits for no one, but I imagine most of us

feel like we are in our prime, at least in our minds. If there is anything for sure we should all take a note from the Legendary Joe Smith not only has he led a life to admire, riding motorcycles and partying across the nation, but at 83 he still has kick ass birthday parties.

Joe’s 83rd Birthday Party was hosted by Willie’s Honky Tonk in Winston-Salem, NC. Willie’s has been a staple in the biker community for over 50 years and is a premier dive bar in the Carolinas.

The party officially started around 2pm with a covered dish feast. When it comes to celebrating Joe, people come from all over the southeast so Willie’s was already hopping.

It was gonna be a long day for sure. Jello Wrestling was on the schedule for that evening, but the less than desirable weather made the planned outside wrestling arena a no go.

The 100lbs of jello is in the house though, so this will happen later in the year! Nevertheless tonight was gonna be a party.

Joe arrived early in the afternoon and chose a seat. It wasn’t his usual spot at the Willie’s U-shaped bar, but it was explained to me that Joe made it to a table and was surrounded by fans and friends, and that was as far as he made it.

Joe stayed there the rest of the night and the crowd remained around him. Joe was signing autographs on shirts, paper, skin or whatever people had. Joe has his signature down pat; he’s signed it thousands of times including etching it in biker bar bathrooms mirrors across the nation as he rode back and forth to rallies. Joe had a beer in the well all night long as his friends kept his whistle wet. He was telling jokes and stories in between posing for photos with all the pretty girls, and some dudes too. I’m telling ya, Joe has it made. I only hope there are dozens of honeys hanging off me on my 83rd birthday!

Robbie McMillan provided the live music that night with

an acoustic set. Robbie was belting out classics all night. The music paused so that we could sing Happy Birthday to Joe. Bar manager, Angie, presented him with a huge cake decorated with Joe’s iconic black wide brimmed hat. Joe even sang to himself. The party went on into the night and Joe out partied a bunch of us that are half his age.

If you missed the celebration, not to worry. Joe is easily found at Willie’s Honky Tonk most days of the week. If he’s not belly up to the bar in Winston-Salem, you may find him at rallies near and far. If you have a bucket list, you need to have “Ride With Joe” on that list. He’s a living legend and a hell of guy. Joe will tell you stories from his life that’ll blow your mind and I bet he’ll even throw in a few jokes.

Happy Birthday Joe.

Pro Fuel Champion Sam White Wins Both AMRA & AHDRA Titles Story and photos by Alan Dockery ost racers start the

season with a winning attitude.

They are ready to hit the strip and send everyone else to their trailers. Gonna win it all. But few of them are 68 years old and actually do it.

Sam White, Chapin, SC, set the goal of dominating the Pro Fuel Harley Class in both the All Harley Drag Racing Association and the American Motorcycle Racing Association in 2023.

He did it. Sam qualified Number One at all but one race, in both associations.

He won lots of races and took the 2023 Pro Fuel Championship in both AHDRA and AMRA. Other teams have won multiple championships, Sam did it with a special focus and his own Old Guy style.

He rode a state of the art, Johnny Vickers Hawaya Racing built machine that was quicker than the rest of the field while needing less maintenance and tuning.

Sam started drag racing at 45 years old. He bought a Top Fuel Harley. I’ve watched lots of racers move up through classes. They modify their machines or buy or build something bigger and faster. It is maybe a handful of guys who have made it to the top class, Top Fuel Harley. Sam started on a Top Fuel bike. He rode regular hopped-up Harley street bikes but didn’t even have an ET race bike.

“I had never been down a drag strip,” Sam said. “Bought half ownership of John Sands’ and Bob Malloy’s bike in 1999.

Raced Top Fuel and Nitro Funny Bike classes until 2010.

Took a five year break. Then came up to see Johnny and bought Terminator 1.” For 2023 he raced Terminator 2, which I’ll tell y’all about in the other story.

Yep, Sam jumped right on a Top Fuel Harley and raced them for ten years. He didn’t go to Johnny’s Fuel School. Didn’t move up from sportsman to pro classes. Sam rented Rockingham Dragway to learn how to ride the machine. Then went to the World Finals at Rockingham to get licensed.

“Saturday, I made three passes. At the end of the day, my time was good enough to qualify sixteenth in the field. But I still was not licensed to race. The Top Fuel racers had a meeting and agreed I could get my license and race the next day.

Bob Spina qualified number one and said he would race me,” Sam said. After surviving the first year Sam had three mentors that approached him and taught Sam how to pilot a Top Fuel Harley. They were Jim McClure, Ray Price and Bill Furr, all legends on the drag strip.

For the next ten years, Sam rode the big motor nitromethane machines of Top Fuel and Funny Bike. The main difference between those bikes is Top Fuel can have a transmission.

When Sam got back into Fuel Bikes, he decided to race the Pro Fuel class. I and the fans dig Pro Fuel bikes. Especially when a bunch of them are fixing to make passes down the strip. These are the small nitro bikes with 120 cubic inch engines, carburetors, and single speed only. But those machines still fill the air with nitromethane, rattle your chest and put down 7.30’s all day.

“I realized that I wanted to become more than just a rider.

I wanted to affect motorcycle drag racing. I wanted to do something for the sport and make it better. I was getting up in age. At 63 years old I met Johnny and bought Terminator 1. I wanted to race a fuel bike that I could ride longer into my life.

My Funny Bike ran 6.70 seconds at more than 200 miles per hour and the Pro Fuel bikes were running 7.50 at 170. So, I was very comfortable on the Pro Fuel bike. I almost won the first race I took T-1 to. No practice just go race,” Sam said.

“I soon started winning races on the Pro Fuel bike. They are lighter weight and nimble. Easier to steer. All the techniques I had learned on Top Fuel and Funny Bikes I could apply to the Pro Fuel bike. It responds much quicker.”

“Fans love Pro Fuel. It’s a competitive class with lots of bikes and close races. Pro Fuel is a class where you really get to drag race just about every pass,” Sam said.

Terminator 2 “After riding T-1 for years, I noticed a new frame in Johnny’s shop. It had some changes and I convinced Johnny to

build me a Pro Fuel bike that would change that class and make us go quicker. Like how the Top Fuel guys are pushing toward that 6.00 number. We want to push to the 7.00 number. As they go for 5.90, we will go to 6.90. Those were my goals and Johnny Vickers said yes, we can build that bike.”

“He said you know testing will be required. That means deep pockets, time, and money to make it work.

We would go to the track with lots of parts and pieces.

Sometimes none of them worked and other times just a piece did. That went on for a couple years. Then Johnny got the carburetor working right and everything came together. The way the chassis is set up, the way the wheelie bars are built, how the front end is tucked in set up style, it all came together right.

I’ll never ride a lay down bike after riding this sit up style,” Sam said. Johnny added the Maxx ECU which allows better tuning of fuel and ignition. The combination of builder, tuner, bike rider had come together for an awesome race machine. At 68, Sam was ready to change the class.

“For 2023, my goal was to win both championships. My goal was to win every race. We were convinced that we could do that with this motorcycle. I did not want to do it struggling.

I wanted to take my wife to the track and stepson Matt. Bringing Johnny to the track is almost like cheating since he is the master.”

“I didn’t just want to win, but I wanted to show that anybody could take one of the Johnny Vickers Pro Fuel bikes and with an average rider and crew you can win races. It’s dependable and needs minimum maintenance. You don’t have to work on it all night at the racetrack. It took us a couple years to work the bugs out, but the platform was right there.

Everything he did worked.”

“Between passes all we did was add fuel, change oil, change clutch and check a few other things. The whole race season I just rode the bike. I didn’t adjust a timer nor change a jet. I didn’t change a thing on that bike. We went to every race all season with the same tune up. The bike is dialed in to go race and the components are so superior to what we had ten years ago,” he said.

“I would like to thank the following people for assisting me with this great season… Johnny Vickers, Matt Coleman, Walter Halonski, Rocky Jackson and my wife and biggest cheerleader April White.”

Sam dominated the 2023 race season. His personal records on the bike are 7.17 seconds at 180 miles an hour. At this point the machine is still below its optimum performance and Sam says he feels a 6.99 is possible. Now that he has reached the goal of two championships, look for Sam and Johnny to bust records. See what the limits can be. He won’t have to worry about going rounds and getting points. Sam said he wants a state-of-the-art Top Fuel bike again and to put some young guy on it to race.

“At the age of 68 I knew that was a goal I wanted to tackle.

At the end of that I was tired. Lots of living on the road and at my age that was enough.”

Johnny Vickers, Pro Fuel Harley Master

Story by Alan Dockery Photo by Matt Coleman told y’all in the story about Sam White winning both the All Harley Drag Racing Association and the American Motorcycle Racing Association Pro Fuel Harley Championships in 2023 that he rode a special machine. That race bike known as Terminator 2 was built and tuned by Johnny Vickers of Hawaya Racing in Millers Creek, NC. I know Johnny has lots of fans going back to when he was riding Nitro Harleys. Y’all holler out his name now when he is at the starting line watching one of the many riders and race teams, he helps get down the strip. I’ve seen him wear a few race team shirts over each other and peel them off as the teams come to the line. So y’all probably have a bunch of questions, but I’m gonna keep this short and mainly tell about how the race world got Terminator Two. I might tease with some things I saw and heard at the shop tucked up in the North Cackalackie Hills.

I’ve known Johnny from the drag strip for almost 30 years.

He was already racing nitro bikes when I met him. He’s another guy who quickly went to racing nitro. Now the Master of Pro Fuel Harleys. Pro Fuel bikes are the small nitro bikes with 120 cubic inch engines, carburetors, and single speed only. They fill the air with nitromethane, rattle your chest and run 7.30’s all day.

Johnny grew up in the muscle car days. He restores Old Mopars now. Like lots of us he raced cars, starting with Mom’s at the drag strip. His parents didn’t allow motorcycles, so he stashed his first one at a buddy’s house. He graduated high school during peak Vietnam War draft time and joined the Navy. Johnny served on the USS Saratoga CVA-60 from 1970 to 1974 making two tours, one in the Mediterranean and one in Vietnam. He worked on the flight deck as a Guided Missile Division Crew Leader, specializing in air launched guided weapons.

After the Navy he worked for Chevy in Baton Rouge, LA, for a few years. Worked in the chemical industry for more.

Johnny had enduro bikes and raced Hare Scrambles. That’s cross-country racing. He was good and won the Louisiana 250 championship. But at 40 years old he needed to find racing with less beating on the body.

“I built a Sportster for sand drags in Daytona. It had a 96inch motor. Well, the tree huggers shut that down. So, we put on a slick and raced at Red Roberts events in Texas. We went to Sturgis and Truett & Osborne’s races. Ran in the Modified Class. I won a championship in Red’s races. But we only ran gasoline for less than two years,” Johnny said.

He continued modifying the Sportster to run nitro. Tore up lots of transmissions. Johnny studied racing nitromethane as more than just mechanical parts. His background in the chemical industry meant he studied nitro as a fuel, how it works, why it works, how it applies to racing a Harley. Nitromethane is a totally different fuel. This is part of why Johnny is a Nitro Master.

I got to know Johnny in the late 1990’s as he was becoming a star. Fans were cheering for Hawaya Racing. Sidestep here, gotta explain the origin of Hawaya Racing, for a team based in North Carolina and originating in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

“Bottom line to the story is ‘Hawaya’ is Louisiana slang for ‘How are you?’ It goes way back to Bike Week in Daytona around 1981 - 1982. One of the local girls that lived there had a private party on Wednesday during bike week. People from all over the USA and Canada were invited. To be allowed into the party, you must have and wear a handmade Hawaiian shirt made by the girl throwing the party. No shirt, No party. When I started Drag racing the Harley I built, no one had any type of uniforms. Just tee shirts and jeans. We (the team at that time) decided to wear our Hawaiian shirts to a race in Clarksville, TN, for a race and the rest is history. Jim McClure, Pete Hill and many of the greats were there at that race, but it was us, as a team with the shirts that made the front page of the Nashville Continues On Page 34

Tennessee Sunday morning newspaper.” Johnny said. Hey, there’s one of those fan questions answered. The origin of Hawaya Racing and the beach scene logo.

In the mid-1990s Johnny was running Delkron Four-Cam cases. That was the tough race motor of the time. And Johnny was blowing them up. In 1996 he blew up 11 motors. Pushed them to the limit. Always had lots of parts since you had to do that back them to race since the carnage was so bad.

What pushed Johnny to develop his own engine was not just the cost, but the time and effort to build motors. “I was working myself to death to keep it running,” he said. “I thought if I can’t build something better then I’m gonna quit. So, I stopped racing and sold everything and concentrated on the business and making better products.”

With no engineering background, Johnny used basic Biker and Racer skills to start figuring it out. Race and find the next weakest link. That never stops.

“Jerry Gordon and I became acquainted with each other.

He is an engineer. He is an old bike racer and engineer. He wanted to build a Pro Stock motor, but I needed a fuel motor.

We put our heads together and came up with the Derringer Motor,” Johnny said.

What made that engine better, well from the start it’s a better design. One-piece crankshaft instead of built-up from several parts. The old knife and fork Harley rod design can only take so much horsepower before parts start leaving the engine cases.

“One thing we did was make the Derringer motors modular.

The cases are just two halves and just cases. The cam chest is a separate part, bearing carriers a different part. We wanted to build a motor that as technology improves, we could update and modify without going back to a clean sheet of paper,” he said.

Johnny still has the second set of Derringer cases and can build a modern, high cam chest, wet motor from them. That was one of his goals from the start to make a durable engine that owners can service and upgrade. Biggest upgrade was

raising the cams. That shortened each push rod three inches.

Reduces weight and flex. Johnny’s newest Derringers can turn 6,500 rpm. Well, when you gotta get down the drag strip in seven seconds you only get so many times that the engine actually fires and pushes a piston. Increase the RPM and you get more power pulses in those seven seconds. Get to the finish line just a little bit sooner. Duh huh “The chassis design is a product of Pete Browne and me in developing the Terminator 1 bike. Terminator 2 bike is very similar but with a few changes I as a rider wanted to make.

Remember, this was the time before the ‘Pro Street’ bikes were big and the track prep that goes with that. We had gotten to a point that we were having to de-tune the bikes to stop the wheel spin, so we came up with the Terminator style Pro Fuel bike to help that. We lengthened the wheelbase, de-raked the neck and widened the chassis in the rear for a larger wheel (not tire) and flipped the clutch around (inboard) to make the bike narrower along with lowering the backbone by 3 “. The bike comes in at around 515 pounds less rider. Clutch is all Hawaya Racing as is 90% of the parts on our bikes.”

Johnny builds the frame and makes some significant changes for Terminator Two. He pushed the engine two inches farther forward. Which means the crankshaft to rear axle distance is a little more. Provides a slight grip increase at the starting line and pulled the front end back like a Pro Stock Bike. T 2 is a sit-up style, and the frame is one inch wider in the rear. Johnny had anticipated running a wider 13-inch rim.

They run an 11-inch slick on a 12 wheel now. He is always tweaking the clutch too. Gotta get that Derringer power to the rear slick and the track.

Smell That Nitro Nitromethane is a special fuel. It’s what gives Top Fuel, Funny Bike and Pro Fuel machines that special sound and smell. Makes your eyes water and nose run. Makes chest pounding power and flames out of the pipes at Rockingham on Saturday night. CH3NO2 is an explosive compound containing both Nitrogen and Oxygen. It has Oxygen and Hydrogen so doesn’t need air to ignite. At 11 pounds a gallon, Nitromethane is almost twice as heavy as gasoline.

Even with Johnny’s years of knowledge about managing nitromethane, developing his own carburetor years ago and tuning so many other folks’ bikes; he still finds ways to dial-in his machine a little better. One of those recent upgrades is the Maxx ECU. This modern computer is much more precise in how it can help the bike get down the strip. It helps Johnny fine tune things like fuel lean outs. With everything in one small box, the Maxx ECU replaces a few separate units.

Johnny has this machine so well dialed in that it ran the same tune up all year. No matter the track or conditions. All Sam had to do was some timer and clutch tweaks and go win.

He changed one jet all season and switched it back. That Derringer motor needs minimum maintenance too. The engine in Sam’s bike has more than 70 passes on it and the rocker boxes have not been removed. Valves required no maintenance nor

adjustment during a season racing both associations, hard. All they did at the strip was add fuel, change oil, service clutch and check things like tires.

Look for Sam and Johnny in 2024 to be busting records instead of going for championships. Shucks they did that.

Johnny has built some Top Fuel bikes and plans more. At 70+ years old he will continue to evolve Nitro Harley Fuel Racing with his innovative engines and bikes. I saw two Harley Baggers coming together with Derringer Engines in the Hawaya Racing shop. One was huge 196 cubic inches, high compression, methanol motor and the other just big 156 inch gonna have a turbo on methanol. Looking forward to hearing and seeing those bikes on the strip.

I’ll see y’all there cheering for Sam, Johnny and all the Pro Fuel Harley teams.

Veterans Adaptive Motorcycle Program Matty’s Build

eterans Adaptive Motorcycle Program

(VAMP) puts disabled veterans back in the wind! We are a 501(c)3 charity operating through cash donations and free labor of volunteers and shops.

Since 2022, we have undertaken projects in Maine, Ohio, North Carolina, and other states ranging in varying costs and complexity. Most recently, through partnerships with veteranfriendly shops and parts suppliers, we assisted a Maine-based veteran by acquiring and installing a reverse gear, Rekluse clutch, performed an engine overhaul, and installed some custom parts to get the veteran owner back in the wind – completely free of charge to the disabled veteran.

Our Project One of the first disabled veteran candidates to come forward and request VAMP’s assistance was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and Special Operations Community. Matthew “Matty” Heist served in the Air Force for 12 years as a communications specialist. He deployed with U.S. Special Mission Units to Afghanistan 10 times over a few years. Matty has been a lifelong rider and served as a prospect for the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club in Spring Lake, North Carolina. The day Matty was “patched” into the MC, he was on a ride and was “t-boned” in an intersection. As a result, Matty suffered horrific injuries including losing his right arm at the shoulder and head/brain damage. Over the last 10 years, Matty has endured 91 surgeries and over 400 visits to doctors and consultants.

Most recently, Matty received an implant to help manage the constant pain he endures.

Throughout all of this, Matty has never given up on VAMP and his wish to ride again. Matty relayed that he needs to ride again to experience what each of us experiences when riding our bikes. He needs the clarity of thought achieved by riding along with peace of mind and relaxation. He and his wife loved to take rides on Sundays between his deployments to reconnect.

Those rides relieved the effects of PTSD from combat while keeping a couple together. We want to create the opportunity for future riding for both again.

Our Goal We at VAMP are soliciting organizations for support to get

Harley-Davidson Footwear Hannon Boot Review By: Lincoln Infield ’m tough on boots. We ride nearly every day and therefore need to be wearing riding boots every day. To that fact, I haven’t bought a pair of shoes in nearly a decade. So, I am always on the lookout for a good, tough pair of boots and after years of abuse, it was time to snag a new pair. I usually rely on Harley-Davidson Footwear when I need a new pair and they have never disappointed me. I don’t need anything really fancy, just a good looking boot, made for men, with riding motorcycles in mind. This time around I landed on The Hannon Boot.

The Hannon features a full grain leather upper and a pewter Bar and Shield logo at the top of the shaft on the outside of the boot. The shaft height is 7 inches and provides ankle coverage.

The full grain leather is soft and breaks in easy. The boots feel great on your feet straight out of the box and after a month of daily use they are still comfy and supportive. One thing that I have to have is a zipper on the side of the boot for quick on and off action. I like my boots to be tight on my feet, but there is nothing worse than having to loosen the laces and re-tie your boots a couple times a day. The Hannon’s YKK locking inside zipper provides that quick on and off convenience. The Hannon features seven eyelets and leather cordage for laces.

The eyelets go all the way to the top of the boot and the leather cordage provides a non-slip knot that has held up since day one. The Hannon also features a pull loop at the back of the boot that assists in putting the boot on.

I don’t need a lot of heel, just enough to catch the foot peg and provide some easy riding comfort. The Hannon heel height does just that at 1.25 inches. The outsole is rubber, and the Goodyear welt construction makes for a durable boot. The rubber sole has some non-skid patterns and does not squeak on showroom floors, which by the way, is hugely important!

New Years Ride To Remember David Lytton

Story and photos by Alan Dockery hen I was a Beach Bum in Florida, New Years Day was for Surfing, Sailing and Fishing. We rode all year round. So I was a little puzzled when I retired from the Air Force, returned to North Carolina and my buddies said we are riding to the lake for a Barefoot Skiing Tournament. Huh. OK. Yes, the tradition in the Hickory, Statesville, Mooresville and Lincolnton area is to ride to Lake Norman Marina on Highway 150 on New Years Day. The Carolina Show Ski Team hosted the 46th Barefoot Skiing Tournament this year. The water was rough and folks struggled to make long runs.

It’s cool to watch them start out right in front of the crowd and do tricks as they go by.

Lake Norman Marina accepts the local Bikers who ride in for a while. Folks hangout there for about an hour, watch the first rounds of competition. Get a hot dog or chili for lunch. Make all those “guys who used to ride” jealous as they check out the bikes. I saw everything from Flatheads and Pans to the newest Harleys and imported bikes.

After gathering at the marina, folks ride to Two Trees Sports Bar and Grill, 5242 Slanting Bridge Road, Denver, NC, to continue celebrating the New Year. Two Trees is the cool place near Lake Norman for Bikers to stop and get great food, drinks and hang out.

For the past few years, many of us have called this the David Lytton Memorial Ride. David was a well known and loved local bike shop owner who passed in 2019. He lead the ride from Statesville to the marina for several years.

I first met David at a drag strip somewhere years before I moved back to North Carolina. He was crew chief for a Sportster that Mike Nicholson was racing in I think modified class.

I saw their tech card and told him I was going back to Western

Carolina once my 20 years in the service was up.

I saw the TRI-MAX Racing Team become the Nitro Shack Race Team as David and Mike moved up to a nitromethane fueled machine. They were going much quicker, running a Pro Dragster. That’s the small motor, carbureted, single gear nitro bikes. I’m always impressed by guys like David who can make those machines run well.

David was well known around this part of the state as a good mechanic. For years he owned and ran the Nitro Shack on the corner of Newton Drive and Hwy 70 on the West side of Statesville before moving out on Hwy 64. He worked with long-time friend Clyde Eller at another shop when folks needed to buy a used motorcycle.

Clyde, Buddy Foss and Janette Thornley are almost ready to be back in the business with Westside Twins Motorcycle Company in Statesville. They are fixin to have a real nice place with lots of room for pre-loved motorcycles you can buy, plenty of shop space to service your bike and lots of parking for events. Westside Twins is at 2313 West Front Street. That’s just off of I-40 Exit 148.

New Years’ Day David usually lead a group ride down to Lake Norman for the Barefoot Ski Contest.

He said if you are going to ride this year, best to start the year riding. Now his son, Wes, still leads the Statesville group with lots of folks gathering at The Boxcar before riding to the marina.

“March 17 will be five years since Dave passed and every year I see the New Years ride that he started so many years ago grow,” Clyde said. “I just want to thank everyone for keeping this great man in your day to day thoughts, memories and conversation. I put more miles on motorcycles riding beside of Dave than anyone I have ridden with and anyone

who had the pleasure of meeting him knows what kind of quality brother he was to everyone. We all miss him. So we all just keep doing our best to ‘do the good’ as he would say.”

David’s son Wes may not be as well known but he still rides and appreciates that we remember his Dad. This year, Wes was riding his Dad’s bike and wearing his vest as he lead folks down Hwy 150 and rolled into the Marina.

“I think Dad would have loved to be there with everyone, and I’m sure everyone would have loved for Dad to be there too. There couldn’t have been a better turnout for the annual New Years Ride and I hope for an even better one next year.

When Dad started the ride, it was just a group of guys wanting to start the year riding, then it just got bigger. I hope this ride continues to grow, and I’m sure that’s what Dad would want too,” Wes said.

For the many years past and many to come, I hope to see lots of y’all out riding around Lake Norman and remembering my old buddy David Lytton on New Years Day.

LOVE ebruary is celebrated as the month of love in

America with Valentine’s Day at the center.

Last year Americans spent roughly $26 billion on Valentine’s day. It seems appropriate to measure the depth of our love for someone by how much we spend. This train of though is strongly encouraged by the retail industry and we are for the most part willing to drink the Kool-Aid. The word love appears 504 times in the New King James Version of the bible. The bible is the greatest love story ever told as it is about God’s love for us. He desires the best for us if we will only listen and draw ourselves to him through his son Jesus.

I offer a small sample of what God give us in his word concerning the topic of love and how we are to love one another: Colossians 3:12-14 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the

truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Valentine’s Day is sandwiched between the two greatest acts of love in history. In December we celebrated Christmas, God sent his son Jesus, our savior. Next month we celebrate Easter, Jesus resurrection provides salvation to all who are willing to accept him as our savior.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Matthew 26:53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?

A roman legion was roughly 6,000 men so this statement from Jesus indicates he has 72,000 angels at his disposal to defend him if he chose to call on them. It is important to realize that nails did not hold Jesus to the cross, his love for us did.

With his dying words Jesus gave the most perfect example of love and forgiveness possible: Luke 23:34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.

Jesus forgave and had both love and compassion for those who were crucifying him.

Our instructions are clear that we are to love our neighbor as we love ourself. There is nothing we can do that will have a more positive impact in our world today than to follow our instructions by forgiving and loving those God puts in our path each day.

When HoneyBun Met His Bitch

ur paths crossed at a local pub; I was out social-

izing with the girls. Tom (he wasn’t HoneyBun just yet) bought me a Bud and we exchanged email addresses by the end of the evening, then our story began. Funny thing was, I didn’t quite remember what he looked like, other than his big blue eyes and really cool glasses. The rest was a bit foggy.

Many months later and a multitude of emails, we decided to meet for the second time at a coffee shop (slightly more clearheaded). Well, I’m not gonna lie… This huge guy, decked out in full leathers pulled up on this big black bike, loud pipes and all. Of course, everyone looked his way. I started to sweat (gals perspire, but not that day). “Is that him?” Cuz, well, now I wasn’t sure what I remembered! I decided that I would let him come to me (good thinking, right?). Yup, Tom approached my table, I made eye contact with those baby blues and we’ve been 2up ever since.

I had never been on a motorcycle til I met HoneyBun and I was already over 40! I wasn’t sure what to expect or what was expected of me. My Man just asked that I not make any sudden, jerky movements and to just “go with it”. Things worked out famously.

My Man has ridden since he was a boy on the farm, starting with a dirt bike and working his way up to a cruiser, so his experience is vast. The motorcycle that roared and growled up to the coffee shop that day was a 2004 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic (yes, that‘s a mouthful, and yes, he had to give me the bike details cuz all that mattered to me was that he looked pretty damned sexy.)

I know, it’s embarrassing!

Our relationship was long-distance to start, then we decided to cohabitate somewhere along the way, so we both packed up our nuts and bolts to be together. We’ve pulled up stakes half a dozen times since we met because of My HoneyBun’s job. It’s been great, actually. I don’t like packing and unpacking, who does? But, we’ve had the chance to ride in so many different areas: mountains, prairies, the East and West coasts and everything in-between. I remember my first ride like it was just yesterday. Tom always takes along a spare lid with a visor for inclement weather, so he plunked that on my noggin, I hopped on the Bitch Pad and down the road we went.

The rest is history!

We still have a few items left on our Bucket List but since the accident, we may have to ride on four wheels. Only time will tell.

By Wally Wersching n December 16th, The Windjammers of Shelby, NC held their 35th Annual Toy Run. I have been to every one so far, and I wasn’t about to miss this one either. The weather is very important for a successful Toy Run, and God was on their side this time with sunny skies and relatively warm temps. It was a beautiful day for a motorcycle ride.

The Windjammers are very busy the day of the Toy Run. It starts with “Hangman” cooking the pork butts. He cooks all night in a very large cooker next to the clubhouse. In the morning when the pork has cooked sufficiently, he and his crew of helpers pull the pork off the bones, and fill trays with the delicious pork. Later, after the run, the pulled pork will make some of the best pull pork sandwiches around for all the participants to enjoy.

They also provide sausage biscuits and hot coffee at the clubhouse to anyone who shows up before the run. This has been this way for over 30 years.

I went to the clubhouse at about 10:00AM, and placed a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines on the bar for the after run party. There was a group of riders getting ready to head to the gathering place - the Cleveland Mall.

I was surprised that “Hangman” and his crew were already done pulling the pork off the bones. All that was left was a pan

full of pork butt bones, and the other side of the cooker full of pork butts for sale after the run. The Windjammers do many things to raise money for the children, and it all adds up in the end.

A group was getting ready to leave. A few were attaching reindeer antlers to their mirrors for the festive look. I took a few pictures of them leaving. Santa was one of the riders in the group. Can’t do anything without Santa! With a roar and a cloud of dust, they were on their way to the mall.

After they left, I headed to the mall myself. Traffic was heavy on Rt 74 (Dixon Blvd.) as I went through town to the mall. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see many bikers already in the lot. Some were hovering around the tshirt table, and others were at the old military truck sponsored by the local US Marine Corps group where the toys were dropped off.

The first thing I did was to place another stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine on the t-shirt table. I also bought a few raffle tickets for the beautiful 2000 Dyna Wide Glide.

If I would win, I’d give the bike back to the club to raffle off again, or sell. I definitely do not need a Harley. “Miss Vickie” is the last bike I will ever own.

Then I walked over to the truck to see all the different toys being put in the back. By the time the truck left, it was packed full, from front to back and floor to ceiling. Santa was there supervising the loading.

As time passed, the large parking lot slowly filled with bikes. It’s always a lot of fun. Many old friends were there shaking hands and hugging each other in friendly greetings. I saw some old friends that I only see during Toy Runs like Carolyn. She was one of my students when I was a Ridercoach in Harley-Davidson’s Riders Edge program a few lifetimes ago. It’s always great seeing her.

Years ago, the North Carolina Windjammers located another Windjammers club in Wisconsin.

There have been many group get-togethers. This year, “Butcher” one of the Wisconsin Windjammers came down to Shelby for the Toy Run. While Carolyn and I were talking, “Butcher” and his young lady came up. He remembered me Continues On Page 50

taking a group picture of both Windjammers clubs back in May 2011 when some of the Wisconsin club came down for a combined Windjammer run. He wanted to know if I still had the picture. Later, after I went home, I found the picture, and posted it on the Wisconsin Windjammers club’s Facebook page.

There were many clubs, and Biker Ministries represented at the run. All brought toys strapped to their bikes or in the Crimson Crusaders case; they towed trailers behind their bikes that were full of toys. Some also had their bikes decorated in the Christmas spirit while others dressed up for the run. ”Panhead Red” was there from Gastonia with his Celebrity Bike. His bike made the Carolinas Biker Lawyers Calendar a couple years ago. It still looks like it could be on a calendar again this year. “Red” keeps it in pristine condition even though he rides it everywhere.

“Grumpy” tracked me down, and we talked for a few minutes. He’s still doing OK. It was getting close to the time when they would leave for the ride to the home I left a few minutes before the parade pulled out of the mall so I could get to the home before they did. I usually take pictures as they ride in. When we heard the police escort sirens in the distance, we all looked down the road to see the arrival of the parade. Santa led the parade followed by the rest as far as the eye could see. As the bikes arrived, I stood in the road to get a good shot as they rode in. The bikes went on both sides of me to find a parking spot – some in front of the house, and others in the church parking lot.

It was a very festive event. Some of the people who brought a gift into the home had tears in their eyes as they left. Everybody had a smile on their face. It’s always a pleasure to be part of any Toy Run especially the Windjammers - because we get to meet some of the children. They really appreciate what we do. That’s why I haven’t missed one since the first one on December 17, 1989. I plan on going to all the future ones too.

with the live music by “Cadillac Deville”. Most continued to mingle on the front lawn as though they didn’t want it to end.

Next year’s toy run starts the day after this year’s run. The club members work all year getting pledges and donations so that the next year’s Toy Run will be the best ever.

This year’s run donated $17,000 to the Children’s Homes.

Ever since the 1992 Toy Run, the Windjammers Toy Runs have given over a half a million dollars to the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County. The money has been used to give the children a more normal life. This year’s run was a relatively large one. Someone counted 287 bikes, I thought it was closer to 500 bikes. There have been years with close to 1,000 bikes and other years with only 50 bikes. The weather has the most influence on how many bikes are at the Toy Run. We all pray for good weather each year. I’ll be back again next year no matter what the weather.

ike Payne and his stePfather went to look at an old 1968 Bsa lightning that was gather dust in a storage unit.

we all love barn finds, but sometimes they can be more trouble than they are worth. In this case the Lightnings 650cc engine was locked up. It wasn’t until they noticed a sticker on the fender of the bike that Mike was sure he would buy the bike. “I was really questioning if I was really wanted it and my Stepfather looks at it a little sticker on the back of the fender and he goes, ‘Who went to Yorktown High School?’. Turns out, the guy was selling his dad’s old bike after he had passed away and his dad was Mike’s Step-Fathers best friend at Yorktown High School. Talk about a small world! At that point, Mike bought the bike for $200 and took it home. Mike credits Jeff at First Flight Motorcycles for getting the engine unlocked, and Frank’s Classic Cycle Works and Ovation Cycles for other work on the old BSA. Mike used the Lightning as a daily commuter until he got the bike fully restored and now its more of a show piece than a commuter. Ya gotta love the old chrome fender bikes and this 1968 BSA Lightning is a stunning example of how they used to be!

Roger, who was 19 years old, was buying an expensive bracelet, to surprise his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, at a very smart jeweler’s shop in Myrtle Beach SC. The jeweler inquired, ‘Would you like your girlfriend’s name engraved on it?’ Roger thought for a moment, grinned, then answered, “No, instead engrave ‘To my one and only love’.”

The jeweler smiled and said, “Yes, sir; how very romantic of you.” Roger retorted with a glint in his eye, “Not exactly romantic, but very practical. This way, if we break up, I can use it again.”

An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execution.

His last-minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed. As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about, “What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you been? Dinner is cold and I’m not reheating it”. And on and on and on. Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs. While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband’s client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all.

Wright would not be hanged tonight. Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go upstairs and give him the good news. As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over, naked, drying his legs and feet. “They’re not hanging Wright tonight,” she said. He whirled around and screamed, “For the love of god woman, don’t you ever stop?!”.

A blonde driving a car became lost in a snowstorm. She didn’t panic however, because she remembered what her dad had once told her. “If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, just wait for a snowplow to come

Three drunk guys entered a taxi. The taxi driver knew that they were drunk so he started the engine and turned it off again. Then said, “We have reached your destination”. The first guy gave him money and the second guy said, “Thank you”. The third guy slapped the driver. The driver was shocked thinking the third drunk knew what he had done. But then he asked, “What was that for?”. The third guy replied, “Control your speed next time, you nearly killed us!”.

A young ventriloquist is touring the clubs and one night he’s doing a show in a small town in New Brunswick. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes. Suddenly, a blonde woman in the 4th row stands on her chair and starts shouting, “I’ve heard enough of your stupid ass blonde jokes! What makes you think you can stereotype women that way?

What does the color of a person’s hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It’s guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as a person, because you and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general and all in the name of humor!” The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde yells, “You stay out of this, mister! I’m talking to that little bastard on your knee!”

After nearly 50 years of marriage, a couple was lying in bed one evening, when the wife felt her husband, begin to massage her in ways he hadn’t in quite some time. It almost tickled as his fingers started at her neck, and then began moving down past the small of her back.

He then caressed her shoulders and neck, slowly worked his hand down, stopping just over her stomach. He then proceeded to place his hand on her left inner arm, working down her side, passing gently over her buttock and down her leg to her calf. Then, he proceeded up her thigh, stopping just at the uppermost portion of her leg. He continued in the same manner on her right side, then suddenly stopped, rolled over and became silent. As she had become quite aroused by this caressing,

she asked in a loving voice, “Honey that was wonderful. Why did you stop?” To which he responded: “I found the remote”.

A man goes swimming in the ocean but gets sucked out to sea. A boat passes by him and tells him to climb aboard but he says, “I have faith, God will save me.” The Coast Guard comes by with a rescue helicopter and tells him to climb up the ladder, but he says, “I have faith, God will save me.” The man is now getting tired but thankfully a dolphin swims under him and starts to carry him to shore, but the man pushes the dolphin away saying “I have faith, God will save me. The man dies and goes to Heaven. He asks God “Why didn’t you save me?” God replies “I tried! I sent a ship, a helicopter and a dolphin!”

A church puts out a wanted ad for somebody to ring their bell each day. A man with no arms replies to the want ad. The priest asks him “How can you ring a bell with no arms?”

The man runs into the bell face first and the bell rings loud and beautifully. The priest gives him the job. One day he misses the bell though and falls to his death. The priest and several other people come to the man’s side and one of them says “Who is he?” The priest replies “I don’t know. But his face sure rings a bell.”

Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A mobile phone on a bench rings and a man engages the free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen. Man: “Hello” Woman: “Honey, it’s me... are you at the club?” Man: “Yes” Woman: “I’m at the City Centre Mall now and found this beautiful leather coat.

It’s only $1,000 Is it OK if I buy it?” Man: “Sure, go ahead if you really like it.” Woman: “I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2024 Models. I saw one I really liked.” Man: “How much?” Woman: “$98,000” Man: “OK, but for that price make sure it comes with all the options.” Woman: “Great! Oh, and one more thing, the house I wanted last year is back on the market.

They’re asking for $980,000.” Man: “Well, then go ahead and make an offer of $900,000.

They will probably take it. If not, go the extra 80 thousand if you think it’s really a pretty good price.” Woman: “OK. I’ll see you later! I love you so much! You’re so generous!” Man: “You’re worth it. ‘Bye!” The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, with mouths wide open. The man turns and asks, “Anybody knows whose phone this is?”
