ell, Christmas and New Year’s is behind us now. All of 2016 is behind us now and it gives an opportunity to look forward to 2017 with a fresh perspective. So many things have happened in the past year that it is hard to recall them all. In one sense it doesn’t matter as today and the future are what we have to work with. Personally, I am glad that 2016 is behind us. Election years are always a little crazy and this year was certainly no exception. After every election, everyone seems to settle down and focus on making their lives better than they were. That is my intention. We lost a lot of familiar friends and celebrities in 2016, but as glib as it may sound, life goes on. And so, shall I as long as I am allowed. 2017 always starts in Times Square with the dropping of the ball, singing of Auld Lang Syne, and a toast to the new year. We adhere to some of those same traditions, but in the motorcycle community of the Carolinas it begins with the Easy Riders Bike Show in Charlotte, NC on January 21st. Weather permitting, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine will be there to welcome all of our friends and readers to the new riding season. Super Bowl LI (51) from NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas follows on February 5th. The big event is the 19th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, PreDaytona, Valentine’s Day Party And Oyster Roast. This year’s host location is Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken at 4695 S. Main Street in Winston-Salem, NC. Tim Nall of A & M Crane Services is a corporate sponsor again this year. There will be free oysters (steamed and raw), provided by Bob Karney of The Karney Law Firm and Smokin’ Harley-Davidson of Winston- Salem, NC. There will also be contests, giveaways, event t-shirts, and more. Traditionally, to celebrate Valentine’s Day, we raffle off a diamond heart pendant provided by Bruce Hayes (The King Of Diamonds) from Hayes Jewelers in Lexington, NC. We will also raffle off a 55” 4K Ultra HD flat screen TV. No event is complete without music and there will be live music, too. The Honky Tonk Outlaws will be handling that for us. Sometimes the weather is bad, but the party is always GREAT! If the weather is frightful or even threatening, come in the cage, but please leave the children at home as this is an adult venue and no one under 21 will be admitted. NO EXCEPTIONS! Tuesday, February 14th is Valentine’s Day followed by Daytona Beach 76th Annual Bike Week on March 10-19. And as they say, “We’re off and running!” There will be tons of other events and you will be able to find them all in the Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar or online at FullThrottleMagazine.com on your computer or hand held device 24/7. The 19th Annual Brenner Children’s Hospital Toy Run By: WildThing This toy run, to me, is one of the most important in this area. Maybe because we were lucky to have healthy children and grandchildren, I can’t imagine how it must be to have a child in the hospital at Christmas. My love and prayers go to all those in Brenner at Christmas, so it is with great pleasure that together, we can bring Christmas cheer to them. The run begins with great fanfare at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro. Mark Wheelihan and his staff work on this project for several months, gathering spon-

sors, coordinating with law enforcement escorts, planning and preparing event t-shirts, and gathering toys. It all comes together on the second Saturday of December. We were blessed with dry conditions as the motorcycles began lining up on Farragut Street in front of the dealership. It was sunny, but quite chilly, as folks got registered, delivered toys to the waiting bins, and purchased run t-shirts (proceeds from these sales was going into the pot for Brenner). As soon as Santa arrived on his Harley with sidecar full of reindeer to lead the motorcycles, riders began suiting up, and the truck with the loaded toy trailer started down the street toward I-40. To say the run was police escorted was putting it mildly. There were 25 motor officers involved from Guilford County, Greensboro PD, Winston-Salem PD, Kernersville PD, Davidson County Sheriff’s Department, and High Point PD that shut down I-40 as we rode through. They led the line of motorcycles, blocked the oncoming ramps, and police cars followed the line to prevent cars from approaching the line of motorcycles or cutting through it. They did a fabulous job and everyone riding must have felt very safe and protected as I did. I have been on this run in the past when cars would cut through the line of motorcycles to speed up or to get off the road, and would cause confusion and near accidents. It was much safer this way, with the 215+ motorcycles that ventured out for this chilly run. Upon arrival at Brenner Children’s Hospital, everyone meandered inside and were treated to light refreshments. Then Mark and Tara Wheelihan gathered the riders together and began the presentation by thanking those companies and individuals who have been supporters for many years and included thanks to Wes, Sharee, and Kelsey, members of his dealership crew who helped every year. He then presented an envelope containing the cash donations that had been gathered totaling $20,000 and stated that there was at least the same value of toys that were in the trailer. Beth Smith, Child Life Coordinator at Brenner Children’s Hospital, graciously thanked everyone and told us that their Christmas depends on the toy run. She said the toys

and cash would be used all through the year for children’s birthdays as well as for Christmas. Then we were all asked to help unload the toys and take them to be separated into age groups to be ready for Santa to distribute. It truly blessed my heart to hear that last year a mom was spending Christmas at Brenner with her child and she was notified that Santa would be coming Christmas morning. She thought, maybe a card or something, but was so surprised when she awoke to find a large bag of toys on Christmas morning for her child. She then spent the year gathering toys to participate in this year’s toy run and paid it forward. How sweet is that? So, let’s do it again in 2017. See you there on the second Saturday in December.

The Inaugural Howell Brown III Classics, Hot Rods, And Steel Horse Show By Allison Nichols The Inaugural Howell Brown III Classics, Hot Rods, And Steel Horse Show held October 21st - 23rd at Holly Hill Mall in Burlington, NC was a major success for local programs that benefit Kids Path Of Hospice. The show, named in honor of a young boy fighting cancer, brought not only the finest cars, trucks, hot rods, and motorcycles around, it brought together a sense of community and support for Brown and his mother, Sue. Proceeds from the show benefitted a trust for Brown. Additional funds benefitted Kids Path Of Hospice and Sam’s Wish Fund. These are programs that work with children facing medical adversity. Diagnosed in 2012 with Pinoblastoma, Howell relocated from the western part of North Carolina to Duke for medical treatment. After multiple surgeries, experimental treatment, and hospital stays, Howell’s care has become palliative. Howell, an active enthusiast of anything that “goes fast”, was overwhelmed with the support of the event named in his honor. The format of the event included a three-day show held inside Holly Hill Mall. Over 50 cars, hot rods, and bikes filled the mall. of prizes, food trucks, music, and special events. The threeday extravaganza hosted two nightly Cruise In’s featuring music by The Mason Lovette Band and Todd Johnson and the Revolvers. For three days, the community came together to enjoy the atheistic beauty of entries in the show. Funds were raised by spectators “voting” for their favorite entries by placing donations in designated entry containers. Funds were also raised from 50/50 ticket sales, raffle prizes, and a commemorative t-shirt designed by Todd Johnson and inspired by Howell himself. The judging, by a team of judges, took place for the Saturday show and the three-day show that concluded on Sunday. Howell himself was able to select his favorite entries from the outdoor show and indoor show. Awards from his selection were bestowed upon Perry Nichols, Keith Jones, and Frank Craig. Each receiving a distinct plaque with the young man’s photograph displayed on the front. All awards were designed to highlight Howell and his love of cars, bikes, trucks, and hot rods. His Laboring Few Toy Run By: WildThing A long time ago, in the early days of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, Tank Kersey, a very humble man, visited us. He introduced us to the mission of His Laboring Few Biker Ministry of Jesus Christ. He, and the organization he served with, was committed to reaching out to the motorcycle community and helping those that were hurting. I am pleased to say that we have carried their message of hope through salvation on the pages of every issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine since then, and I have had the honor to ride with their supporters in the annual toy run. While Tank has gone to be with his Lord, Preacher Steve Ervin and his wife Carolyn, as the original founders of His Laboring Few, have continued the mission, along with their many helpers and supporters. They serve hot meals daily from their facility in Thomasville, they have a clothing bank for those who need these things, they operate Harvest Camp for folks trying to change their life of addiction, HLF South Side Mission, and hold regular Christian services.

They outreach at motorcycle rallies, swap meets, and the like. This year we gathered at Preacher Steve’s Leather on Business 85 and some others met in Greensboro and rode to the old Ford dealership on National Highway. My group from Preacher Steve’s had a very nice ride out through the countryside on this clear and cool day. With a very short stopover, the merged groups of motorcyclists headed to the HLF headquarters on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Thomasville, NC. As the riders unloaded the toys and placed them under the Christmas tree, we were all greeted by the cooks and the aroma of chili and chicken soup. While we were enjoying the food and camaraderie, Preacher Steve called us to attention. He explained how HLF distributed the toys. They accept applications from parents who need things for their kids. Then they separate the toys into age and family appropriate groups. They contact the parents to come pick up the toys, so on Christmas morning the kids are receiving from their parents, (AKA Santa). This, my friends is the essence of Christmas. 3rd Annual Barry Glenn Toys For Tots Poker Run

By: Rose and Lloyd The Annual Toys For Tots Poker Run is a ride that we never miss. This year the ride started at Double D’s Burnout Saloon, and of course David and Missi Thompson did a great job sponsoring the event. This year was a little different, as the riders got ready to take off, David Thompson announced, “This was actually the 3rd Annual Poker Run. The Carolina Marine Riders Group and sponsors, wish this ride to continue because this annual Toys For Tots endeavor was started by one of their beloved members, Barry Glenn. This would have been his 10th year sponsoring. So, going forward, may it be known forever as “The Barry Glenn Memorial Toys for Tots Poker Run”. This will keep his memory remembered and loved.” The crowd went wild with cheering, and then there was a moment of silence in Barry’s memory. There was a prayer for the safety of the ride. Then the engines roared. The first stop was at Big Al’s Treehouse. The bikers were welcomed with cold drinks and snacks. Giving everyone a

little time to chat and, of course, talk motorcycles. Then it was on to the Ole Watering Hole, and again a short break to wet your whistle, and on to Double D’s. There were raffles, an auction, a50/50, and great food. Lamar and Alan Mullis won the 50/50 and gave it all back to the charity. Ex Marine Larry Boyles led the ride, with Sgt. James Copeland, SSgt. Dustin McCormick, and SSgt. Joseph Burt present to welcome all in attendance. The atmosphere was wonderful with a large pit fire out back and plenty of food. There were approximately 80 bikes, with 105 registered riders. There were 22 huge boxes packed on to the truck, and approximately $2600 was raised. This did not include previous events leading up to the final ride. Thanks to all the sponsors, the people that were all working so hard to make this day another special event for the families that will have a smile this Christmas. I am sure Barry was proudly looking down on us with a huge smile on his face.

Select Cycle’s Brutal Beauty Bonneville Bobber Tour

By: Mark Infield On December 14th, Select Cycle entertained hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts at HQ Greensboro for the unveiling of the Triumph Bonneville Bobber. This was not a stand-alone event, but one of 50 venues across the US and Canada that Triumph chose for a presentation of new Triumph models showcasing the 2017 Bonneville Bobber. The venue for this event was in a renaissance area of Greensboro that might cater to the younger set. It was quaint, warehouse, and quite nice. Parked outside was a line of new Triumph motorcycles and signage that assured you that this was the place. Upon entering this “invitation only” event our reservations were confirmed and the room opened up to reveal several Triumph models situated around the room. A green Triumph Thruxton took center stage with a lovely model perched upon it. With its 1200cc power plant, it commanded your attention. The more traditional T100 in Intense Orange and New England White was parked next to the trendy T100 Black, which sports blacked-out engine covers, peashooter exhausts and rims. It is

available with either gloss Jet Black or Matte Black. Both are powered by the 900cc parallel twin. Other models were still under cover awaiting their special moment. Hors D’oeuvres were being served and beer and wine were available along with soft drinks. A guitarist, who was quite talented, filled the room with contemporary music. In the back corner Marte’s Barber Shop was setup and giving haircuts. It was an interesting crowd of people in attendance Soon enough the staff of Select Cycle was introduced and the presentation began with the T100s. Models posed on the bikes and gave everyone an opportunity for a photo op. The next to be unveiled were two Triumph Sport Cup models, a café racer styled bike. One was Racing Yellow and Silver Ice. The other was Jet Black and Silver Ice. Both are powered by the liquid-cooled, 900cc “high torque” parallel twin. Next was the Triumph Street Scrambler in Matte Khaki Green. It is a single seat bike featuring an interchangeable pillion seat and aluminum rear rack with large lug multi surface tires and high mounted right side twin exhaust pipes.

11th Annual Burlington H.O.G. & Red Knights N.C. Chapter #7 Toy Run

By: Scott Wicker Photo by: Mandy McGillion Cooler morning temperatures led to warmer afternoon weather on Saturday, November 26th as the Alamance County Chapter of the Red Knights NC #7 and the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter combined forces to hold their annual toy run for the 2016 Holiday Season. Over 65 bikes and 80 riders braved the cooler morning temperatures and met at Down Home Harley-Davidson to start the event. Down Home Harley-Davidson provided breakfast to prepare everyone for the fourteen stops that were safely made at participating fire stations and businesses along the planned route through Alamance County. Fire Station pick up points were EM Holt, Snow Camp, Eli-Whitney, Swepsonville, Me-

bane, Haw River, Faucette Township, North Central, Altamahaw-Ossipee, Elon Station #2, Burlington Headquarters, and Nikki & Company Hair Salon in Graham. Everyone ate lunch at the Faucette Fire Station with hot dogs by Jimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hot Dogs & Hamburgers of Graham. Five gallons of Brunswick Stew was provided by Tickle My Ribs in Burlington. Thanks to Nikki and Brian Izzo for providing drinks for everyone at lunch. Over 30 boxes of toys containing 1,200 or more toys were delivered to Toys For Tots in BMOC in Burlington and over $500 was collected and will be distributed in Alamance County through the efforts of the toy run. Everyone had a great time and a safe ride. Make plans to be there next year if you missed out! A big thanks goes to the members of the N.C. Red Knights Chapter #7 and the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter for organizing this event. The Red Knights and the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter would like to thank everyone that participated and made contributions for such a great cause. A big thank you to Down Home Harley-Davidson also for their support. We appreciate the Law Enforcement Agencies, the Fire Departments, and the Rescue Units that escorted the ride and kept the intersections safe. Many are thinking about what should change from 2016 and many are making New Year’s Resolutions. Many will be kept and many will last a couple of weeks or even months. God wants you to show Him that you mean what you say, He wants all of you. God wants you to show Him you want to give your life to Him and live your life for Him completely. By: Rick Gammons Mike Reavis was my friend. Sounds familiar doesn’t it. It’s depressing to keep burying my friends, and it seems that they keep coming too fast. Mike and I met in 1969, in the hospital. He was diagnosed diabetic, and so was I. It kinda gave us common ground. He and I also went to the same school. After a while, I moved and he remained. It was quite some time before we hooked up again, but when we did. Motorcycles were already a part of both our lives. He also loved cars, loud, fast cars. He was having problems with his diabetes when we caught up. I was too, but not like his. He was beginning to lose some of his eyesight. That is devastating to a biker, but he continued as best he could, only riding during the day so he could see. As time went on, Mike dealt with what he had to and was instrumental in the care of his mom. This cut into his riding time, but Mike was a man who did not complain. He was what he needed to be. You knew who Mike was. He pulled no punches. You could count on him and he held his friends in high regard. He never met a stranger. A few weeks ago, Mike died of a heart attack. I’ve had two and survived. His first one got him. So now he is riding the endless highway with so many of our brothers and sisters who have passed before. By; Kathy Johnson Raging Bull Harley-Davidson has come into Durham, NC like the proverbial bull in a china shop. They are getting noticed very quickly. I stopped in to check out their open house and the first thing I had to do was park in the over flow parking lot. At that moment, I knew I would have a good time. Approaching the dealership, I noticed that they wasted no time putting their Raging Bull signature sign over the main entrance door way. I honestly did not notice at first because of the wall to wall eye candy in the parking lot. You could shop the parking lot for hours with all the horse power they had lined up for sale outside. And I do mean sale. They had the prices, let’s be real, Harley-Davidson: when you say it be prepared to pay it. But when you looked at the tags, or as some say, sticker, you actually said’ “That’s a good price!” Now a days, especially if I say it, that’s rare. When we went in it was a super open house with all the makings of a fun afternoon. They had the Christmas trees up, and instead of beer pong, they were playing jingle bell pong. DJ Heavy was spinning the music and Santa was

spreading the holiday cheer for kids, adults, and even some four legged friends. The food, WOW! it was more than expected! I swear it was like these Hoagie rings that were as big as Carnegie Deli sandwiches. Apple cider, indoor corn hole, and door prizes, demonstrated that this was a well thought out and planned day. Sales specials were exceptional, too. They had HD back packs for fifteen bucks with 20 percent off! That was one of those deals where you didn’t need it but it was such a good deal you thought you would buy it anyway! All in all, the sales prices warmed you up from a cold winter day. If you haven’t stopped in at Raging Bull Harley-Davidson yet, you need to as their looks, prices, and inventory have changed quite a bit. If they have an event, do not miss it. They are sparing no expense to make you part of the Raging Bull family.

Durham HOG Club Toy Run By: Kathy Johnson Photo by: Lisa Banks Durham HOG club makes the “nice” list with the big man every year by having their toy run to the Salvation Army. They were blessed with such a nice riding day for their cause. It was strange how the weather was that day. It was simply beautiful for their ride and afterwards, later that afternoon, it was bitter cold. Interesting almost as, if in fact, Someone was looking out for the charitable efforts they do. They had an impressive turn out for the ride. Everyone was happy and ready. I heard great feed back about the efforts and support from Raging Bull HD, too. You might look at Raging Bull as a new dealership, but make no mistake my friends; you have just received a gift yourself. One of the biggest HD dealerships is now in your back yard. Example: OK, here ya go. Check out their inventory! They don’t have it? Really? Well, I’m sure they can get it from their Georgia or Florida dealerships. Make no mistakes, Raging Bull is here to stay and they are

all about working with the community and being a part of the community. You can see the difference the minute you walk in the dealership. I felt I could even tell the difference in seeing all the enthusiasm on the toy run. Now, some people might have been on a bit of a sugar buzz because all the Krispy Kreme donut boxes were stacked up like Lego building blocks. I must say it was nice to see everyone so happy and so ready to ride. They fired up their engines, kickstands went up, and they went on a bit of a ride and then to their destination. This event is always a success and pleasure to attend. The true joy of that day every year is not the ride itself, it is giving to others in need.

Steele Angels 13th Annual Toy Run By: Wendy Rogers This year marked the 13th year running for the Steele Angels to have their Toy Run. As always, it is held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and it could not have been better weather for a mid-November day. It was in the 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, and the sun was out most of the day! The Fayetteville motorcycling community came together to support the Steele Angels. The ride started at Legends Pub of Fayetteville and ended at The Doghouse. The Fayetteville Police Department provided motorcycle escort as Santa led the merry bikers across town to The Doghouse.

There were plenty of toys this year, which are much needed. There are going to be a lot of very happy children who might otherwise not have been able to enjoy that special day from Santa Claus this Christmas. They all look forward to at this time of the year. This year is definitely one of those years that we all need to come together and provide as much as possible due to the aftermath of the Hurricane Matthew. It has brought devastation in this area and is still to this day trying to replenish and get over and get back to a normal state of life again. It was a great day of socializing with the bikers whom all share a very common interest of riding motorcycles. The food, which was provided by The Doghouse, was great as always. They had prepared a pre-Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, dressing, beans, and mashed potatoes and it was delish! Cold beverages and some solo live music all brought this event together. This year, the Steele Angels had David Phillips, the attorney for Cumberland County Board of Education, as a guest speaker. He spoke with appreciation that the Steele Angels has been giving them some great support since 2004, when the Back To School Events started. He was also expressing his appreciation to all the participants, because he knows without the participants and the sponsors, this type of event would not be possible. All the toys and donations are used in the Cumberland County and surrounding areas. Social Services and the Battered Women Shelter will be helping them get these toys headed in the right direction and get to the children that are

Tis The Season By: Beth Gorman Tis the season is how the saying goes and it is amazing how generous the biker community is. I had the opportunity to attend three different events and all were about giving back to the community. The Southern Boyz RC held a BBQ event to raise money to get donations for the Robbins, NC area. According to current president, Frankie Burgess, last year they helped around 85 individuals and families in the Robbins area. This year they are hoping to help even more. Local businesses and residents were donating items to be given along with monetary donations as well. Every year the amount that is given seems to be getting larger and larger which is great so they can help even more families during the holidays. In Rockingham, NC the Wingmen MC, Carolinas Finest MC, Ghost Riders MC, Playaz Elite, and Steel Wheels held their annual Sandhills Children’s Center Toy Run. The weather was rainy but that still did not stop the riders from going on this run to donate gifts to the Sandhills Children’s Center. Santa even rode his bike! The last event I was able to participate in was the Ol Skool Tribe RC Shelter Thy Neighbor Ride. It was a benefit to help raise money for a new roof on a local resident’s home. After this ride they held a live auction with some great gifts and gift baskets and also pulled a name for a lucky boy or girl to win a new bike and helmet. The lucky winner was Connor Smith.

His mom was overjoyed with the gift. At the local Walmart Charles Miller Jr., President of Ol Skool Tribe RC, and Gary Holt helped him pick out the new bike and helmet. Connor already knew what he wanted. Spiderman is his favorite super hero. I’m sure there were several other events all for good causes during the holidays and many happy recipients as well. It just goes to show you how big our hearts can be, not only during the holidays but the whole year round.

RIP - Skunk The Roost Dog By: Alan Dockery Photo by Tara McAllister Of all the animals on Earth, dogs have a special bond with people. Since the first pack of wolves and cavemen started living and working together, dogs have been part of our lives. I’ve known some cool dogs. I like them to hunt and work. A dog many of y’all have known and loved passed away recently. Skunk The Roost Dog won’t be there to greet us next summer when we roll in to Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC. For eleven years, Skunk was a fixture at The Roost. If he didn’t amble over to meet you in the parking lot, he would stop by while you were setting up camp in the shade. I don’t mean the hyper excited greeting I get from some dogs. Skunk was super chill. I rarely saw him move fast nor bark. Like so many humans at The Roost, Skunk liked to lay in the shade and just hang out with his biker buddies. He looked the part, too. Big old wooly mountain dog. He was always there for us when we needed someone to clean up table scraps. Dogs are not allowed at The Roost. But Skunk was not brought there by anyone, he came on his own. He lived nearby and when he heard the bikes rolling in Skunk invited himself to the party. Over the summers he came more often and stayed

longer. Yes, folks found the owner and let him know Skunk was safe and happy with us. Eventually the old dog moved in for good. I’m probably going to shed a tear the first time I whistle for him to come eat lunch with us and realize he is gone. “They say a person doesn’t choose a dog, the dog chooses you,” said Uncle Roy, one of the Roost creators. “That’s how it was with the Roost dog, Skunk. In 2005, he simply showed up one day at the camp, out of nowhere, carrying a heavy

odor, due to a recent run in with a skunk. Naming him ‘Skunk’ was a no-brainer. Initially, I discouraged his staying, as we had a no dog policy at the time because people paid to be there, and we realized not everyone likes dogs, dog droppings, or animals in general. In business, of course the customer comes first.” “It took less than 24 hours for this wonderful dog to steal my and Mary Lou’s hearts, and I decided to use my privilege as the Roost owner to break my own rule and adopt him. So, Skunk became a fixture at the camp. When David and Pam took over the Roost, there was no thought of taking Skunk away from his home. He was the Roost Dog and that he remained. As I sit here with a heavy heart and streaming tears, I take comfort in reading all the posts and reflect on how many people Skunk touched. I want to thank you all for your kind words. We won’t see his like again,” Roy said. As word spread on social media about Skunk’s passing the

views and comments grew. Within a couple weeks there were thousands of views and hundreds of comments and shares. Amazing how many people loved that old dog. “I never realized how many people Skunk touched,” said David Lucas, Roost owner. “His picture reached 9,700 views. I don’t know if that’s going viral, but we are unaware of any other Roost pics reaching that many people. Skunk was loved by all and I don’t think he ever had an enemy. We used to think he got sprayed by skunks cause he was chasing them. Now I think it was because he just tried being a friend to them.” “Once Skunk decided to stay, he made it his job to go down on Friday morning to greet riders as they came in. He would stay down in the campground until Sunday when he would drag his wore out butt up the stairs and crash on his couch where he rested up to do it the next weekend. Skunk was an awesome friend who was very loved and will be greatly missed by all.”

Tilley H-D 44th Anniversary

By: Vickie Kress Photo by Kris Kerley It’s hard to believe that 44 years ago in 1972 Don and Robinette Tilley started their life-long dream of owning a Harley-Davidson dealership. Our celebration on Saturday November 19 was to honor Robinette and enjoy our wonderful memories of Don. The dealership started all those years ago west of town on Highway 70. Over the years of providing a great product and excellent service, they outgrew that building and started to expand. By the late 1990’s Tilley HD expanded all the way to Salisbury with a shop to take care of customers in that area. They started 2003 with a modern shop at the current Statesville location. By the end of 2006 the Salisbury shop had grown into a full dealership. Tilley Harley-Davidson’s roots run real deep in our area. Many of our friends and family members have bought motorcycles from Tilley HD. Don was famous in both motorcycle and car racing and some of the NASCAR drivers and crew members still buy their bikes at Tilley HD. Customers brought cans of food that were taken to Don &

This bike holds the NHRA National Record Speed of 184.7 mph in a quarter mile nitro Harley race in Sonoma, California. 14th Annual Arzie Rogers Toy Run

By: Rose and Lloyd This was the 14th Annual Speedway Harley-Davidson and The Speedway HOG Chapter sponsored Arzie Rogers Toy Run. Mrs. Aimee Thomas, owner and operator of Speedway Harley-Davidson, is granddaughter of Arzie Rogers. The Toy Run collects new toys for the Empty Stocking Fund to help bring joys of Christmas to many families and children from Cabarrus County. The Cooperative Christian Ministry and Cannon YMCA organize the Empty Stocking Fund. This year Jamie Eager and Debbie Owens were there to represent the program and show appreciation to all involved. Registration started at 8:30am. Steve Private, Speedway HOG Chapter Director, welcomed all the riders. There was a safety briefing by Lt. Aaron Rankin from Cabarrus County Sheriff Department and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Pastor Kurt Sam provided the Invocation. Then Aimee called

for all bikers to start their engines and the ride was on. There was a beautiful country ride and the yearly ride through downtown Concord. Back at the dealership, there was entertainment by DJ Todd, and food from Uptown Catering Company. There were raffles, door prizes, and a 50/50. Alyssa was there representing Bob Karrney. A huge thank you to the Cabarrus County Sheriff Department, Mooresville Police Department, and Concord Police Department for a wonderful and safe ride. Many thanks to all for the hard work behind the scenes putting the ride together every year, and of course, to all the bikers that come every year and give so freely. Your gracious hearts will provide a Merry Christmas to so many that otherwise may have nothing. We will see you next year.

14th Annual Chesnee Toy Run

By Wally Wersching The City of Chesnee, SC has been holding conventional toy runs for over 13 years. Conventional – meaning that bikers ride in with toys, gather outside in the cold until the short ride, then come back to town to eat free food. Their toy run is always held the Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 20th this year), so the weather for riding motorcycles is not always perfect. In some cases, the weather has been dangerous for motorcycle riding with rain, cold temps, and strong winds. Last year, the City of Chesnee, Dennis from Chesnee Classic Cycle, and the local Legends Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) changed the toy run completely into a combined Toy Run and Cruise-In for antique and classic bikes, and cars. It’s held at the Chesnee Shrine Club a mile west of downtown Chesnee, so if it is cold, people can be warm inside the building while they eat free delicious BBQ, and listen to the live band. This year, it

was “Vic Velvet” providing the entertainment. All the proceeds of the event still go to the Chesnee Kops Kids Program that helps over a hundred children during the Christmas Season.

I left home about 12:15 with the sun shining, and the temps in the mid 40’s. I pulled into the Shrine Club parking lot at a little before 1pm. The smell of BBQ cooking filled the air. The Legends chapter of the AMCA brought many of their bikes, and had a booth set up for the silent auction. They were very friendly with all the people demonstrating the benefits of joining their chapter. The legendary Pete Hill was there signing posters for the crowd. He holds so many records with his Harley Knuckleheads that it would be difficult to write them all down. Needless to say, he really is a legend in the sport of drag racing, and a member of the AMA Hall Of Fame. There were a couple lines of classic cars and trucks all shining in the bright afternoon sun. The most unique car at the event was a 1913 REO Touring. It was driven to the event. I love the engine with its exposed rocker arms. I’d really enjoy watching it run. With more cars and bikes rolling in, the lot was filling up fast. When Dennis gave the OK, there was an instant line and the free food was served. I heard people say that it was delicious. I think this type of Toy Run/Cruise-In will be a winner for years to come. People were talking much more, and just the thought of being able to go inside if it were to rain, will bring in a lot more people – not only bikers. There’s a large parking lot behind the building where the spectators parked. Later in the afternoon, a $300 door prize was given away compliments of the Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group.

Each person bringing a toy got a chance to win. I left a little before 2pm, and headed north on Rt. 221. I wanted to stop in at the 18th Annual Rutherford County Toy Run. They hold theirs on the same day as Chesnee’s, and it’s always difficult to go to both.

17th Annual Rutherford County Toy Run By Wally Wersching On Sunday, November 20th, I went to the Chesnee Toy Run, and afterward I went to attend the Rutherford County Toy Run in Forest City, NC. I headed to Forest City to drive on Rte. 74A. It was a very pleasant trip. The weather was perfect with great scenery. The toy run started near Spindale, NC in the old Kmart parking lot, and had a police escort through Rutherfordton, Spindale, and Forest City before stopping at the National Guard Armory. Former Moose Lodge members along with the Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) were responsible for the run to help area children have a pleasant Christmas. I arrived a little before 2pm. I knew that they started the run at 1:30 so I’d catch them on the ride into the armory. I stood at the entrance to the armory parking lot, and waited for them to arrive. Before long, I heard the rumble of motorcycles, and the shrill sound of the police car’s sirens. They had arrived. I stood taking pictures, and noticed a lot of friends as they rode by.

After the bikes pulled into the armory lot, the bikers lined up to take their toys into the armory, and get free food. There was a long line that wound around before it went into the armory. I met a few friends, and we talked for a while before I left a little before 3:00. It was a full afternoon of people giving to the children in need. We were all glad that the weather cooperated. The children will have a lot of toys this Christmas.

31st Annual Greenville, SC ABATE Toy Run

By: Bill Gallaway Sunday, December 4 was the date for the 31st Annual Toy Run to help provide a toy at Christmas for an underprivileged child. The ride started at Julia’s “The Bar” for some who chowed down on a hearty hot breakfast as they have since they opened many years ago. I know, as I joined back in 2004. Others started arriving around noon at the Greenville Shrine Club and went into the lounge to warm up and dry off while meeting with other members and friends. Others met outside and listened to a speech by ABATE Members and the legendary Pete Hill, Greenville’s very own motorcycle drag racer. Others continued to pour in literally until it was KSU at 2pm. The number of riders was considerably fewer this year and many rode in cages due to the rain, but many still braved the cold rain to help Santa with toys for the kids. The 8-mile ride from the Shrine Club to the County Square was cold and wet. Traffic was controlled by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department that did a fine job as they have in previous years with many more riders. Upon arrival at County Square riders unloaded their presents

into Santa’s box truck and helped themselves to hot coffee and hot chocolate, while ABATE Officers presented the Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office with awards for assisting us over the years. If you missed the ride, make plans now for next year as it is always the first Sunday in December. Many Thanks to everyone that made this a success and may you have a Merry Christmas.

“The Snake”

By Wally Wersching “The Snake” is a very twisty section of Rte. 421 from Mountain City, TN to Bristol, TN with a stop in the middle called Shady Valley. I hadn’t been on “The Snake” (www.421TheSnake. com) in almost a year and never while riding Miss Vickie. I left home about 7am, heading north on Rte. 18. After a few miles, I turned right onto the Lenoir shortcut through Connelly Springs, Rutherford College, and other small towns. I have found that it’s much faster, and more scenic than taking Rte. 321 from Hickory or even Gastonia. Once I got into Lenoir, I turned left onto Rte. 321. I really enjoy riding up to Blowing Rock since they completed the widening project on Rte. 321. It’s smooth and very scenic. When I rode over the rise into Blowing Rock, it was like

opening the refrigerator door. The temp dropped about 20 degrees. It turned from chilly to down right cold. I was glad that I wore my sweatshirt and leather jacket. I followed Rte. 321 through Blowing Rock, and into Boone, NC where I turned left onto “Truck” Rte. 421. I followed the signs to get in and out of Boone. There can be serious traffic problems in Boone because it’s a college town home to Appalachian State University. I continued heading north on Rte. 421. Soon I was on “The Snake”. It was fun. The road is almost perfect with the turns tight and banked. I never scraped my floorboards during the run. I had a great run with no traffic in my lane all the way to Shady Valley. Before I knew it, I was pulling into the Shady Valley Country Store where Rte. 421 intersects TN 91. It took about two and a half hours, and a little over 100 miles. I walked in, and talked with the owner behind the counter. We had a pleasant talk, and then it was time to leave. I said good-bye. From the intersection, you can go straight on Rte. 421, and go over the mountain to Bristol, TN, turn right onto TN 133, and go over the mountain to Damascus, VA, or turn left onto TN 91, and go over the mountain to Elizabethton, TN. I headed left onto TN 91. TN 91 is twisty, too, but not as many turns per mile as “The Snake”. Shady Valley is a peaceful valley with small farms and nice homes. It’s a typical mountain community. They all look like pictures in a book or on a post card. Shady Valley has the Cranberry Festival every fall. Maybe I’ll go next year. After a few miles on TN 91, I stopped along side a Chevy graveyard where over 30 mostly Chevys reside. I did see

an early 50’s Ford way in the back, and there were a couple MOPARs too. Many of the cars were in sad shape but some were all there, and just needed an easy restoration. After taking a few pictures, I continued heading south on TN 91. As I came into Elizabethton, the road turned into a fourlane with gentle sweeping turns. Once in Elizabethton, I turned left onto Rte. 19E (Veterans Memorial Parkway) another four-lane. I stopped at the Carter County Railroad Exhibit on the left next to a children’s playground and visitor center. It’s interesting to see the old steam engine; supposedly the last commercially operated one in the country. I got back onto Rte. 19E, and had to run the stoplight because the sensors in the road would not recognize Miss Vickie. After a few miles, the road narrowed to a two-lane. I turned right onto Simerly Creek Road – TN 173, which is another winding road that follows a small creek. I really enjoy riding on the back roads of the South, especially in the mountains. The scenery is very diverse with its old barns, junk cars, and green fields. Most of them are tree lined so that when there’s an opening in the trees, it’s always a surprise. I could have spent hours stopping to take pictures so I just took them in my mind for future reference. After a few miles, I turned left onto TN 107, which turns into Rte. 226 when it crosses into North Carolina. Again, the road was twisty and enjoyable with the small communities like Buladean, NC, which is in the center of another beautiful

valley. I followed Rte. 226 all the way into Marion and on to Shelby. It was a great ride with many roads that seem like they were designed for motorcycles and sports cars.

36th Annual Jack Hurley Toy Parade

By: Bill Gallaway Sunday, November 27, 2016 was the date for the 36th Annual Jack Hurley Anderson Toy Parade in memory of Charles and Diane Bolt. This annual parade helps underprivileged children receive a toy from Santa on Christmas morning. The weather was very cooperative around 2pm when the ride began with temps in the 60’s and plenty of sunshine. Many of the estimated 4,000 riders from Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina started arriving at around noon to meet up with friends and acquaintances while in the staging area. They rode many miles with toys strapped to their bikes and sticking out of saddlebags. The ride started in downtown Anderson, SC at the White Jones Hardware parking lot at 2:00 PM and where I was in the staging area. The ride went thru downtown Anderson in a very organized fashion and finished at the Anderson Civic Center. Many thanks to the Police and road guards that helped secure our route and keep the public out of harm’s way.

Upon arrival at the Anderson Civic Center, the motorcyclists carried their toys to the volunteers that waited at the Anderson Cares and Shares storage trucks. In addition to all the toys donated, the organizers raised about $10,000 selling T-shirts and raffle-tickets. The money raised goes to the Brighter Christmas Fund, a charity that helps families in need at Christmas. The Independent Mail and the Foothills Community Foundation sponsor this charity. All along the 5-mile route there were families of on-lookers taking pictures and waving to the bikers as they rode by wearing Santa hats on bikes decorated with wreaths and lights. Last reports state there were 2 box trucks and a large trailer full of toys. Bikers again showed their true colors by supporting the children at Christmas. This year the Confederates Motorcycle Club & Friends and the Anderson Independent Mail again sponsored the Toy Parade.

2016 MBHD Toy Run Takes The Strand

By: Everette “EZ” Short On the first Saturday of December, warm weather and clear skies brought out Santa and his elves for the 2016 Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson Toy Run. With almost 300 bikes rolling into the back lot, the front lot, and the lots across the street, Santa had indeed called out the cavalry for a spectacular day. Sheri Gibson, the dedicated and ever faithful Director of Marketing for MBHD tells me that all in all, there were over 400 riders that showed up, to collect over $3,000 in donations for the day. Kickstands went up and the rowdy crowd, led by Santa, ruled the road for the day. There’s something wild about that many bikes, taking to the road with Santa leading the way with a Christmas decorated propane tank rolling along. The next stop was at The Boathouse on the waterway, where spirits were lifted in pint glasses and The Harley Shop at the Beach met with the toy run crowd for lunch, music, give aways and prizes for a helluvagood time. By the end of the day, the run had 7 large boxes of toys and enough good cheer to last till Christmas for kids that deserve more than we can ever give them. The best part of that day is that we all came together with no attitudes, no accidents, and no incidents. With so many diverse people in the crowd we had one mission ~ to provide toys for kids that otherwise wouldn’t have a Christmas. You won’t read this until after the holiday has passed, but I would hope you did something, for no reason, for someone you’ve never met. It will make you feel good and the good news is that you can do it all year long. I have to put out a special thank you to Leona Cheslick for the photos on that day, as I was in the ER with a friend and couldn’t get there until it was all over, and to all the staff of MBHD for their gracious attitude throughout the year while hosting these events. They don’t get paid extra to deal with crowds, but they do it without backing down from their 100% commitment to customer service and good will to all. We’ll see you all in the spring for the Rally and if you

By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, December 10th was the date for this 23rd Annual Toy Run put on by the Oconee A.B.A.T.E. and the VFW Post 6830 Ladies Auxiliary of Walhalla, SC, which helps underprivileged children receive a Christmas toy. Area riders started arriving in the staging at noon for the ride and there were fewer bikes and more cars this year. The weather was cooler than rides in the past with temperatures in the 40’s. Weather forecasters were saying it’s the beginning of a Polar Vortex. At least the sun was shining on us and coffee and hot water for cocoa was available to warm your insides. One rider was so cold his leather chaps cracked and fell off. That’s cold! The ride started at 1pm and departed from the Old Train Depot in Westminster, SC. We had a Police escort along

the way to our destination in Tamassee, SC, which was the Daughters of the American Revolution School (DAR School). Many local churches collected toys and brought them in the cars and trucks that participated in the ride. Those on bikes had toys strapped to their bikes and sticking out of saddle bags. Upon arrival at DAR, we were greeted by Mr. Jason Eller, the Director, who gladly accepted the toys on Santa’s behalf. At the school, the toys were unloaded from cars and bikes, the A.B.A.T.E. trailer, and the truck and trailer of the VFW Post 6830 Ladies Auxiliary. After delivery of the toys, some members returned to the VFW where soup was served. 26th Annual Conover School Toy Run Story and Photo by Alan Dockery Yeah, it sure was a chilly morning the first Saturday of December. But motorcycles love the cool air and bikers in the Hickory, NC, area love their toy run. This year more than 600 bikes rolled up to the Wizard Saloon for the 26th Annual Toy Run to benefit the Conover School. Organized by Mike Dyson, Wizard Saloon owner, this is the biggest toy run in our area and a great way to kick off the Christmas season. So many people showed up they had to park them across the tracks and in other lots nearby. The Conover School Toy Run supports one of the state’s premier special education schools. It’s different from other toy runs because instead of bringing toys to a central collection point, teachers select specific toys based on each child’s wants, needs, and abilities. Bikers pay the tab through a charity managed by Mike. This is a unique toy run and the coolest by far that I’ve been on in my many riding years. On the Conover School Toy Run, bikers see the kids they are helping. As we rode into the Newton-Conover High School parking lot the cheering kids and families lined the sidewalk. Leading the way was Arnold Kerley on his beautiful custom trike towing Santa (Wesley Moore) in a sleigh. Folks gathered in the gym to see a great part of this toy run. What makes it so special for the kids, their families, and the bikers is what the kids give back to us, a heart-warming

Christmas Show. Each year the children of the Conover School show their appreciation by putting on a Christmas pageant, singing and acting out songs of the season. This is such a touching show that even the most macho bikers could be seen wiping an occasional tear. After the singing, Santa handed out presents to the kids. Every year the students do some little something to make the day extra special to us old bikers. This year they welcomed us to join them on the floor for the last song and dance. The excitement of the students and bikers charged the air with real Christmas Spirit in the gym that day. Also, the Christmas Tree in the middle of the show was decorated with ornaments made by the students for the bikers to take home. It was so emotional to see all these bikers coming to school for our children and to make sure they got to see Santa and receive a gift. It is so heart-warming to see everyone come out to support Conover School. It really puts everyone in the Christmas spirit to see all the bikers watching our special needs students perform a Christmas program for them.” After the show, most of the riders returned to the Wizard Saloon for some chili and sandwiches. Then Mike and his staff gave away a bunch of cool door prizes and auctioned off some nice items. “I really enjoyed the toy run this year since I slowed down and let the girls take over more,” Mike Dyson said. “I got to spend more time with old friends. It was great to talk with guys who helped start this years ago and have ridden with us many times. I’m usually too busy that day to do that.” “I loved how they ended the show this year by letting bikers join the kids on the floor to sing and dance. Instead of turning left or right to the exits, bikers were smiling and laughing with the kids. This is always a great way to give the Christmas spirit to so many people.”

Benefit Ride To Help Santa Claus In Honor Of Jackie Cheeks By: Gary Steelman On November 19th, Red Knights Chapter 13 and STE Powersports held a benefit ride to honor Jackie Cheeks. Jackie was killed in a motorcycle accident on September 3rd of this year. This Saturday morning was cool and the coffee hot, as the riders rolled in and signed up at STE. There were over seventy-five bikes and cars lined up for the ride as kick stands went up at twelve thirty. The ride was escorted by Iredell County’s Sheriff’s Department through the countryside to Sheffield-Calahaln Fire Department. There a spaghetti dinner was waiting along with tables full of deserts. The after-lunch activities included door prize drawings and the 50/50. In memory of Jackie Cheeks, the Red Knights made Jackie’s wife, Lori Cheeks, an honorary member of Red Knights Chapter 13. The Red Knights have also raised money for their Santa Claus Fund for children in the community. This ride and fund raiser will become an annual event. Thanks to all those

By: Wally Wersching On Saturday, November 19th, John Murphey of Murphey’s Scooter Shed in Kings Mountain, NC held his 22nd Annual Toy Run. The 50 mile, police escorted, ride benefits the Shriner’s Burn Center, Oxford Orphanage Masonic Home for Children, and the Kings Mountain Police Department “Shop With A Cop”. God continued to watch over John’s event. It was another beautiful sunny fall day with temps due to rise into the lower 60’s, which encouraged many bikers to come for the ride. The toys collected filled many huge boxes. This year Murphey asked for a $5 donation along with the new toy for every person going on the run. That included the run, BBQ afterward, and live music. Murphey’s Scooter Shed is located in a residential neighborhood next to John’s home on a dead-end road. There is a small parking area around the shop, and during the toy runs it’s full of bikers buying t-shirts, renewing old acquaintances, and making new ones, while dropping off the toys. I got to Murphey’s at about 10:15AM. John looks more like Santa Claus every year. Slowly, more bikes came down the road. I helped guide them to keep most of the bikes on the pavement. The

adjacent lawns were off limits. The band “Back Road” was playing in the garage, and the cooks were getting the food ready. The BBQ served at Murphey’s is some of the best in the area. I walked down the long line of motorcycles, and heard many people laughing, and getting acquainted. Down the row of beautiful motorcycles were a few Victory and Indian motorcycles, but most of the bikes were Harleys or Japanese Harley wannabes. I saw a few young people on sport bikes, two Triumphs, a couple Can-Am Spyders, and a Polaris Slingshot. There was even a bike with a 1940 sidecar. Everybody was welcomed. I met a man riding a new Victory, and after we talked for a few minutes, we realized that we knew each other. I hadn’t talked with Rocky for about six years. We had a pleasant conversation as we walked toward the registration table. I always like to get to the toy run early so I can visit with people before they leave. Many riders don’t come back to Murphey’s for the free BBQ. At exactly 12:00 noon, the run began with a police escort with Murphey leading the run as usual on his custom-made Indian look-alike

bike. The route was planned ahead, and either the police or fire departments would block off every intersection. I decided not to go on the run but to take pictures of the riders as they left. They left quickly but it still took the 300+ bikes about 15 minutes to pass. I’ll put all my pictures on a DVD for John to show him who was there. He’s so busy during the run that he doesn’t have time to interact with everyone. After all the bikes left, I headed back home. I noticed that the wind picked up with strong gusts, and it was getting cooler. Many of the run participants took off their leathers because it was warm walking around Murphey’s place. I’ll bet that when they stopped, they put them back on for the ride back to Murphey’s to eat. I will definitely go again next year. It’s a great way to spend a late fall Saturday, and it helps a lot of kids have a Merry Christmas.
