ere we go! Another new year is in front of us. Consider all the potential that is on the horizon. Just as when we began 2017, we had no idea what the days ahead would bring. However, from the onset, I doubt that we would have been able to accurately describe all the challenges and blessings that the year would hold. And so it is again this year. I anticipate 2018 will be a great year. Are you with me? Make your New Year’s resolutions and work to make them happen. Don’t just say you are going to do it, DO IT! Remember, Yoda said, “Do or do not. There is no try.” Then start out the year by visiting The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine booth at the Easyriders Bike Show on January 20 at the Convention Center in Charlotte. Enter your bike for a chance to be featured in Easyriders Magazine. Entry fees for bike show space is FREE. First 50 pre-registered entries per show receive a Commemorative Bike Show Mug. All makes of motorcycles are welcome. Competition is geared mostly to: Harley-Davidson, Indian, Victory, Vintage American, Vintage British, Metric Cruisers, aftermarket Harley-Davidson and Specialty Customs. The 20th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party and Oyster Roast is next on the calendar. The date is February 10th and this year, being our 20th, we wanted to return to the scene of the original crime – where we held the 1st Fear Of February Party. The name has changed and David & Missie Thompson have made so many changes that once you get inside, you won’t recognize it as the same place. It used to be called the Full Throttle Saloon (before the one in Sturgis), but now it is known far and wide as Double D’s Burn Out Saloon. So, come on out to 1408 East Mountain Street in Kernersville, North Carolina from noon to 6pm for free oysters (while they last) sponsored by Karney Law and Smokin’ H-D, music, door prizes, A diamond heart pendant raffle sponsored by Bruce Hayes “The King Of Diamonds” Jewelers in Lexington, NC, and a BIG SCREEN TV raffle. If you survive the 20th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party and Oyster Roast, it’s off to Daytona for Spring Bike Week and all it has to offer. For now, that’s enough to contemplate before even thinking about Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Rally 2018. But go ahead and imagine all the roads that we will ride together in the coming year. 27th Annual Conover School Toy Run
Story and Photo by Alan Dockery On the first Saturday in December, it was barely cool enough for winter gear as bikers across the Hickory, NC, area rode into the Wizard Saloon for the 27th Annual Toy Run to benefit the Conover School. Within a couple hours, there must have been 500 bikes packing the bar and nearby parking lots. What makes it different from other toy runs is that instead of bringing toys to a central collection point, teachers select specific toys based on each child’s wants, needs, and abilities. Bikers pay the tab through a charity managed by Mike Dyson. This is a unique toy run and the coolest by far that I’ve been on in my many years of riding. On the Conover School Toy Run, bikers see the kids they are helping. As we rode into the Newton-Conover High School parking lot, the cheering kids and families lined the sidewalk. Folks gathered in the gym to see a great part of this toy run. What makes it so special for the kids, their families, and the bikers is what the kids give back to us, a heart-warming
Christmas Show. Each year the children of the Conover School show their appreciation by putting on a Christmas pageant, singing and acting out songs of the season. This is such a touching show that even the most macho bikers could be seen wiping an occasional tear. I love how they end the show now by inviting the bikers to join the students for a last song and dance. The Christmas trees were decorated with ornaments made by the students for the bikers to take home. Most of the riders returned to the Wizard Saloon for some Taco Soup and sandwiches. Then Mike and his staff gave away a bunch of cool door prizes and auctioned off some nice items.

Mike Dyson, Wizard Saloon owner, has organized this toy run for 27 years. His wife Becky has helped the past 20 years and told me how much it means to so many people. “It warms my heart every year to see people come out that we only see once a year, yet every year they are here for the toy run,” Becky said. “Doesn’t matter what they are going through, whether it be sickness, a crisis, or plain ole bad weather. They are gonna be here for those kids. As far as Mike goes, he never ceases to amaze me. I’ve been by his side for the toy run for 20 years now and every year when we pull up and see the kids he gets a big ole grin on his face from ear to ear and teary eyed from pure joy. He’s always said as long as there is breath in his body the toy run will go on. And that is a fact. Mike says, “Those are our kids. God bless the Toy Run Crew, who helps make this happen. They devote their time and hearts for this cause and we love and appreciate every one of them.”

The 11th Annual Barry “Old Dog” Glenn Toys For Tots Poker Run
By: Lloyd and Rose On December 2nd, the 11th Annual Barry “Old Dog” Glenn Toys For Tots Poker Run started at Double D Burnout Saloon in Kernersville, NC. It was a great day to ride and feel the real spirit of Christmas. Admission was a request of a $20 donation, or a $20 toy. The bikes began to arrive along with The Party Bus, compliments of Royal Limousine Service, for those not riding. First, Tony “Mad Dog” King lead the group in prayer. Then Marine Rider, Tim Gulledge, gave instructions on the ride. GSO Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Coordinator, Sargent James Copeland handled the distribution of the toys. Kick stands were up at 12 noon The ride had stops at JJ’s Watering Hole in Greensboro, JR’s Corner Tavern in High Point, and VFW Post 9899 in Archdale, and then back to Double D Burnout Saloon for food, music by Under The Gun, raffle, 50/50, and dice roll. Thanks again for all that worked to make this year another successful ride. Raising truckloads of toys for children, who, without the hearts of all the biker family that participate every year would not have a very “Merry” Christmas.

Murphey’s 23rd Annual Toy Run By: Wally Wersching On Saturday, November 18th, John Murphey of Murphey’s Scooter-Shed in Kings Mountain, NC held his 23rd Annual Toy Run. The 50 mile, police escorted, ride will benefit the Shriner’s Burn Center, Oxford Orphanage Masonic Home For Children, and the Kings Mountain Police Department “Shop With A Cop”. God continued to watch over John’s event. It was another beautiful, sunny, fall day with temps due to rise into the lower 60’s, which encouraged many bikers to come for the ride. It was supposed to become overcast in the afternoon, and rain later in the evening, but for the toy run, it was almost perfect. The toys collected filled many huge boxes. This year Murphey asked for a $5 donation along with the new toy for every person going on the run. That included the run, BBQ afterward, and live music by the “Backroad Band”. Murphey’s Scooter-Shed is located in a residential neighborhood on a dead-end road next to John’s home. There is a small parking area around the shop, and during the toy runs; it’s full

of bikers buying t-shirts, renewing old acquaintances, and making new ones while dropping off the toys. I got to Murphey’s at about 10:30 am. John looks more like Santa Claus every year. There were already a lot of bikes parked on his road. Slowly, more and more bikes came down the road. After the road was full, the bikes were directed to park on the lawn in front of John’s house. Luckily the ground was pretty hard. We hadn’t had any rain for a while. “Backroad Band” was playing in the garage, and the cooks were getting the food ready. The BBQ served at Murphey’s is some of the best in the area. I walked down the long line The toys collected of motorcycles, and heard filled many huge many people laughing, and boxes. getting acquainted. Down the row of beautiful motorcycles were a few Victory and Indian motorcycles, but most of the bikes were Harleys or Japanese Harley wannabees. I saw a few young people on sportbikes, a Can-Am Spyder, and a couple Polaris Slingshots. Then, a group of Indian motorcycles rolled in. It was one of the local Indian clubs. They are really beautiful motorcycles! I met a man riding a Victory – 2006 Kingpin similar to “Miss Vickie”, and we talked for a few minutes. This winter, his son is going to add a high-dollar sound system to the bike. I hope he’ll be able to hear it over the loud exhaust. I always like to get to the toy run early so I can visit with people before they leave. Many riders don’t come back to Murphey’s for the free BBQ.

At exactly 12:00 noon, the run began with a police escort with Murphey leading the run as usual on his custom-made Indian look-alike bike. I never noticed before but John only wears his Santa hat for protection – no helmet. The route was planned ahead, and every intersection would be blocked off by either the police or fire departments. Again, I decided not to go on the run but to take pictures of the riders as they left. I had to change my normal location because they moved the Toy Run sign to the other side of the road. I wanted to get the sign in the background on my pictures. I didn’t realize how much louder it would be on the other side of the road where all the bikes would be accelerating to catch up with the column. They left quickly but still the over 400 bikes took about 15 minutes for all to pass. I’ll put all my pictures on a DVD for John. He’s so busy during the run that he doesn’t have time to interact with everyone. My pictures will show him who was there. After all the bikes left, I headed back home. I noticed that the wind picked up with strong gusts, and it was getting cooler. Some of the run participants took off their leathers because it was warm walking around Murphey’s place. I’ll bet that when they stop, they’ll put them back on for the ride back to Murphey’s to eat. I will definitely go again next year. It’s a great way to spend a late fall Saturday, and it helps a lot of kids have a Merry Christmas.

Vietnam Wall - The Ride By: Bill Gallaway This year, the moving Vietnam Wall was brought to the Westminster, SC area for the Veterans Day weekend. So, of course, the Walhalla, SC VFW Post 6830, now recognized as an “All American Post” hosted a Memorial Ride to the Wall on Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11th. The ride was staged on Church Street in Walhalla beginning at 11 a.m. with a departure time set for 12:30 p.m. Riders began to arrive during the staging and various groups and single riders met and visited while waiting. By the time 12:30 rolled around, the 50 riders that had gathered were ready to make the ride to the Blue Ridge Electric Shelter where the Wall was on display. After the 30-minute ride to the Wall, the patriotic riders paid their respects in their own way, while some recognized family members and friends whose names were on the Wall. In all, there were 21 service members from Oconee County, SC who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
After the visitation, many riders returned to the VFW where food was available. It was a very moving day to remember and honor our Veterans.

31st Annual Randolph County Toy Run By: David Burnette On December 3, 2017 Randolph County CBA had their 31st Annual Toy Run to benefit the North Carolina Baptist Children’s Home in Thomasville, NC. Cox’s Harley-Davidson had a list of kids along with their Christmas list for Santa that bikers could choose from. Bikers started showing up at Randolph County Mall in Asheboro before 10 am to get in line and register for the ride. Last I heard, there were 2168 riders that registered for the run but looking at the sea of motorcycles in the parking lot, I believe there were a lot more than that showed There were people up. parking lot. There were people lined along the route to watch and cheer as the motorcycles went by. Back at the Mills Children’s Home, the kids were all lined up along the road with signs and big smiles anxiously waiting for the motorcycles to show up. When the truck showed up and the bikers began pulling in they were so excited. After everything was carried into the gym and put in place, the kids were brought in and there was a short program with singing and the story of the birth of Jesus was told. All of the staff introduced themselves and the kids in their care. Then the real fun began when the kids got to rip into their gifts. They were so happy to see all that y’all gave them. It blessed me so much to see all the love and support given to these kids that are going through a tough time in their lives. God Bless all who were a part of this event. 12th Annual Red Knights N.C. Chapter #7 And Burlington H.O.G. Chapter Toy Run
By Scott Wicker Cooler morning temperatures and drizzling rain did not hinder a great turn out on Saturday, November 4th, as the Alamance County Chapter of the Red Knights NC #7 and the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter combined to hold their 12 Annual Toy Run for the 2017 Holiday Season. Over 45 Bikes and riders braved the cooler morning temperatures and drizzling rain and met at Down Home Harley-Davidson to start the run. Down Home Harley-Davidson provided coffee and dough-
nuts to prepare everyone for the stops that were safely made at participating fire stations and businesses along the planned route. The fire station pick up points throughout Alamance County were EM Holt, Snow Camp, Eli-Whitney, Swepsonville, Mebane, Haw River, Faucette, North Central, Altamahaw-Ossipee, Elon Station #2, Burlington Headquarters Fire Station, Alamance Rescue Base, EMS Base, and Graham Headquarters Fire Department. Pleasant Grove Fire Department donated $500 that provided gift cards to those in need. The Burlington H.O.G Club and The Red Knights NC Chapter #7 would also like to Thank the Misfitz Motorcycle Club for their donation of toys and bicycles they gave for the kids. Many of us have been waiting patiently for this announcement since The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine published the artist’s rendering of the building in our April 2017 issue, (page 20). We have been waiting, but Dealer Principal, Mark Wheelihan has been very busy. A project of this magnitude has a multitude of details that must be attended to, like dealing with City Planners, NC DOT, engineers, contractors, and, of course, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The new location is ideally and centrally located at the intersection of NC Hwy 68 and Gallimore Dairy Road to meet the needs of Harley riders in Greensboro and High Point as well as outlying areas. In addition, there will be plenty of show room square footage for new and used bikes, and storage area for bikes in the service department. In fact, this new facility is engineered to house 350 +/- motorcycles, which means no more bikes sitting outside after service, or used ones for sale. All bikes will be indoors. My overall impression of the new logo is: Wow! How cool! There is a lot you can do with a name like Riding High and the logo will look cool in a variety of applications. Notice the iconic Harley number one – this use signifies the dealership’s commitment to maintaining their status as #1 in Customer Service, an achievement they have been recognized for many times over.

Also, one might question the “Est. 1938”. This signifies the long-term relationship of HarleyDavidson in Greensboro and High Point. I don’t know the whole story, but Sparky’s was established in 1938 on Spring St. moved to Elm Eugene St. and he had a second location on English Road in High Point in the early 50’s. Then Louis Canter bought it and they changed the name to Freedom H-D in Greensboro on S. Elm Eugene. Then Rayvon & Wanda Young bought it, named it Young’s Harley-Davidson and moved it to the current Farragut Street location. In 1998, Mark Wheelihan took over from the Youngs and the continuity in Greensboro and High Point continues and is honored in the new logo. Watch for details on the opening festivities, as well as being prepared for the probable shut down of 2-3 days for the move. What a spring this is going to be!

By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, December 9, 2017 was the 24th Annual Oconee SC A.B.A.T.E. Toy Run, which helps underprivileged children receive Christmas toys. The ride started at noon at the Westminster Depot where riders visited with each other while catching up and waiting for departure at 1 pm. Believe it or not, some of the folks only see each other once a year at this event. I overheard them say, “It’s because of the kids that we get out”. Normally we have close to one hundred participants for this event, but this year, due to the low turnout of bikes and riders, we didn’t need a police escort. The weather, which had been warm and dry until this weekend, was cool with temps in the 40’s. Many A.B.A.T.E. members and friends came in their cars and trucks. In the Staging area, here were only a handful of bikes for our ride to our destination, the VFW Post 6830 in Walhalla, SC. Upon arrival at the VFW Post 6830, we were greeted by George White the Commander of the Post and directed to one of the pool tables where the toys were placed for the Ladies Auxiliary of the Post to make sure they get to Santa. After delivery of the toys, the participants hung around to partake in some delicious soups and cornbread provided by A.B.A.T.E. Thanks go out to everyone in-
volved in the 24th Annual A.B.A.T.E. Toy Run, The Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post 6830, all the A.B.A.T.E. members and friends, and everyone else that helped make the toy run a success.

18th Annual Rutherford County Toy Run By: Wally Wersching On Sunday, November 19th, I went to the Toy Run in Chesnee, SC, and afterward I went north to attend the Rutherford County Toy Run in Forest City, NC. I left Chesnee at about 1:30, and followed Rte. 221 all the way to Rte. 74. It was a very pleasant trip – Rte. 221 is four-lane most of the way. The weather was perfect with great scenery. I headed toward Forest City, and exited onto Rte. 74A. The toy run started near Spindale, NC in the old Kmart parking lot behind Denny’s, and rode with a police escort through Rutherfordton, Spindale, and Forest City before ending at the National Guard Armory at 890 Withrow Road (which is almost right behind the old Kmart parking lot). Former Rutherford County Moose Lodge members along with the Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) were responsible for the run to collect toys for area CAR HAULERS Starting @ $2190.00

As I stood taking pictures, I noticed a lot of friends ride by – some waved, others didn’t even see me. They were concerned about where to park their bikes. I noticed that there were a couple custom Victory Baggers in the mix of Harleys and Harley wannabees. Victory motorcycles always stand out. I saw Santa ride in. One of the Gargoyles MC dressed up in a Santa suit for the event. I’m sure that all the children in attendance were happy that he was there. After the bikes pulled into the armory lot, the bikers lined up to take their toys into the armory, and get the free food. The over 300 bikers formed a long line that wound around before it went into the armory.

I talked to a few friends as they passed going into the armory. Everybody had smiles on their faces because they knew that they were going to make some young child happy on Christmas morning. I left a little before 3 pm. It was a full afternoon of people giving to the children in need. We were all glad that the weather cooperated. The children will have a lot of toys this Christmas.

ALR American Children’s Home Ride By: Caroline Every year, in November, the American Legion Riders at Post 55 make sure the kids at the American Children’s Home are not forgotten. This year, the riders met at the Legion Post 55 in Winston-Salem on Sunday, November 19. Everyone pitched in to load up the items to donate this year. There were plenty of items the kids use every day such as bath wash, deodorant, toothpaste, pillows, bedding, and school supplies. A cash donation is always included with enough for each child to get a $25 gift card. With the truck loaded it followed about 30 riders on the short ride to the American Children’s Home in Lexington, NC. The kids are always excited to see the motorcycles pull in and are always waiting for us with welcome signs. riders spent some time talking to the students and had their pictures made with them. The American Children’s Home was established in 1928. Throughout the years, it has been a sanctuary of hope and love to hundreds of orphaned, abandoned, abused and neglected children in this area. They provide, education, residential and family foster homes, behavioral therapy and preparation for adult life. They have many events over the year that you can find out more about on Facebook or their website www.achnc.org. The ALR at Post 55 on Miller Street in Winston-Salem has been a supporter of the American Children’s Home for many years. Greenville, SC ABATE’S 32nd Annual Toy Run By: Bill Gallaway Sunday, December 3rd was the date for the 32nd Annual Toy Run to benefit the Julie Valentine Center and help provide a toy at Christmas to an underprivileged child. by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department. They did a fine job as they have in previous years with many more riders. Upon arrival at County Square, riders unloaded their presents into Santa’s box truck and helped themselves to hot coffee, hot chocolate, and water. If you missed the ride, make plans now for next year as it is always the first Sunday in December. Many thanks to everyone that made this ride a success.

Marshall Rogers 24th Annual Food Run By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, November 28, 2017 was the date for the Annual Food Run for Lakeview Assisted Living located in Walhalla, SC. The Food Run was hosted by Oconee County A.B.A.T.E. and the Walhalla VFW Post 6820. The ride in Marshall’s honor began at noon at the VFW and made stops along the way at Oconee Iron, Triple D Racks, Club 221, and ended after 5 pm back at the VFW for a Beans and Bones dinner with all the fixin’s. Infidels Motorcycle Club Christmas Bicycle Give Away

Due to the economic uncertainty in our area and for reasons these hopeful children cannot understand, many of their wishes will go unfulfilled. tion and a chilly wind blowing across their faces. By donating the 125 bicycles, the Infidels Motorcycle Club is giving a gift that will bring joy to a little boy or girl. It’s more than a bicycle; it’s the cycling connection between the Infidels Motorcycle Club and the children in their community. A bicycle at Christmas is not only a gift, it’s an American tradition, like baseball and apple pie. A child learning to ride a bicycle is a priceless endeavor for any parent, relative or role model. Watching their faces as they pedal down the street and realize they are on their own – their imaginations begin to take them to exotic places! Journeys to hidden treasures and adventures and for some, the first step toward learning to ride something a little bigger, with power that roars down the highway. The goal of the Infidels Motorcycle Club and Fayetteville’s Urban Ministries is to establish a partnership through the FindA-Friend Program. The Infidels Motorcycle Club is a veteran formed, locally based motorcycle club for patriotic Americans and our supporting allies. Fayetteville Urban Ministries is a non-profit organization, supporting the local community more than 40 years with four incredible programs providing faith, hope, love, and security to the lives of thousands Cumberland County residents every year, free of charge. Together, they hope to bring awareness, kindness and generosity to the community. Through these programs and collaborations between members of non-profit organizations and local motorcycle clubs and enthusiast, perhaps a little holiday spirit will touch a child in need and help our neighbors during the Christmas season. The snow began to come down in big flakes as more bikes pulled in and time for the ride was getting near. The Guilford Co Sheriff’s office was escorting the ride and gave a pre-ride pep-talk followed by a prayer. Then we all lined up to pass the toys from the showroom to the trailer for transportation to the Children’s Hospital. It was a beautiful scene as the snow gently fell while a chain of bikers loaded the toys up for delivery. The Guilford County Sheriffs did an excellent job, as usual, blocking traffic for us as we made the trek to the hospital. No lie, when we arrived I was ready to get inside and warm up a bit! The hospital had a station set up with hot cocoa, coffee and awesome cookies waiting for the riders. We all gathered in the lobby as Mark Wheelihan presented an envelope with the sponsorships and donations totaling a whopping $60,000 to assist Brenner Children’s Hospital provide cheer for the children throughout the year. One thing that I was unaware of is that the Hospital provides gifts for siblings of the children who are getting cared for at the hospital to make sure that everyone has some cheer even when they are visiting over the holidays. That’s pretty special. After the presentation of the big check, Beth Smith of the Child Life Department, took a second to thank Mark for his 20 years of dedication to the hospital and let him know that his name would be added to the wall of benefactors in the lobby of the hospital. A well-deserved accolade! Before we saddled up, we all joined in to load the carts with toys to take into the Children’s Hospital. Lots of big smiles were seen as the toys were taken to their drop off point on the 8th floor of the hospital. A feeling of pure accomplishment was in the air. A huge thank you to all that donated throughout the holi-

day season to make sure that the kids at Brenner Children’s Hospital are taken care of, and of course to Mark Wheelihan and his team at Greensboro HarleyDavidson for organizing this great event over the last 20 years. Hopefully next year the weather will be a little better, but either way, the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine will be there. Blue Knights Toys For Tots Ride By: Kickstart & Donut Well, another year has passed us by, but we did not forget about one of the biggest rides of the year - the Blue Knights Toys For Tots Ride that is held in Columbia, SC every year. We had cold weather, but the sun was shining on us to keep us warm. People gathered from all around to meet up at the Pepsi plant on North Main Street. Thousands of people were there to help pack the military trucks full of Christmas gifts for all the kids in need. There was food, drinks, and live entertainment there to prepare ourselves for the little ride that we all were waiting for. So, when the The crowd was rolling in at 12 and lots of gifts were tied down, clock struck 2, some riding with gifts in their it was time to saddle bags. Heck, I even saw a put the parade bicycle strapped on the front forks on the road of a motorcycle! No telling what these bikers will do on ride for the children. I’ve seen some things, but nothing like that! So, when the clock struck 2, it was time to put the parade on the road. As we made our little road trip down Main Street, people were parked and pulling off the roads to see thousands of motorcycles roll the roads of Columbia for a great cause. So, as I watched all the motorcycles pass me by when I filmed
the ride, it felt just as good to me to watch the bikers pass by, even though i was not riding in it, I was still was a part of it. The ride ended at Colonial Life Center, where all the gifts were placed in the boxes and loaded into the back of military trucks to deliver to the good little boys and girls. Thanks to you all that came out and we hope to see you again next year. Just remember, you made a difference in a child’s Christmas 2017. Archie’s Custom Cycles Dyno Shootout By: Kickstart & Donut Archie’s Custom Cycles at 105 East Craft Street in Swansea, SC was the place to be on Saturday, November 18, 2017. We had the perfect weather and the perfect crowd of friends. This was the second time this year they held a dyno shootout, but this time it was on their own machine they just purchased, so if you need or want to get your motorcycle on a dyno they have the know-how and can-do power. We had 23 participants that put their motorcycles on the dyno. It was a job for Alan Autan and Robert Miller, to keep the motorcycles coming and going for the event. Registration was at noon to get the motorcycles ready to see which machine had the most horsepower. We found out that David Platt’s 2010 Roadking with 109 HP and lots of torque was the one to take home the trophy. Congratulations. I think the $25 registration fee made it a well worth you getting on the dyno. So be sure to call Archie’s Custom Cycles

For Lloyd and I it is a tradition. This was his first toy run after he bought the bike from Speedway Harley- Davidson in 2016. Every year it becomes more of a tradition and part of our lives. The day was a beautiful day to ride, led by The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit, and Speedway HarleyDavidson HOG Chapter with assistance from Concord Police and Iredell County Sheriff’s Motor Unit. A catered lunch was provided by Speedway Harley-Davidson from our friends of Uptown Catering.

2nd Annual Benefit For Santa Claus Ride In Honor Of Jackie Cheeks By: Gary Steelman On November 18th, The Red Knights Chapter 13 and STE Powersports sponsored a benefit run called 2nd Annual Benefit For Santa Claus Ride in honor of Jackie Cheeks. The day started out so brisk and cool with temps in the 40’s and undaunted riders started rolling in at STE Powersports. The coffee was hot and the doughnuts sweet. There were around 35 bikes signed up for the ride at 11:30. The ride started with the sirens of the firetrucks leading the pack from STE Powersports out to highway 115 heading north through the Iredell county backroads. The
group ended up at Sheffield-Calahaln Volunteer Fire Department where a spaghetti supper was waiting. Lori Cheeks and

the ladies of the Red Knights prepared the food and made desserts for the event. These ladies did a wonderful job with the supper. Door prizes were provided by local businesses and some were handcrafted by the ladies of Red Knights 13. The ride raised funds for the fire department’s annual Christmas Party, held in honor of Jackie Cheeks who played the part of jolly ole’ Saint Nick before his passing in a motorcycle accident September 3, 2016. The Christmas Party will be held on December 17th at the station. The eating and merry making lasted till nearly dark, the weather turned really cold and windy as one by one the bikes rolled out. The 9th Annual Polk County Toy Run
By: Wally Wersching I had been looking forward to going to the Polk County Toy Run on November 25th in Saluda, NC. They have been doing it since 2009, and have had as many as 800 bikes. Riders come from all over the southeast to join in the fun of giving a child a Merry Christmas. I hadn’t been since 2013, and I remember having a great time visiting with friends – old, and new. I left home at about 10:45 heading west on Rte. 74. It was chilly and overcast. I was wondering if I made the right decision to go when the sun came out, and the rest of the ride was comfortable. I followed Rte. 74 as it merged with I-26. I exited at the Saluda exit, and went into town. There were many tourists wondering around in the many small shops. In the center of town. I turned left, and was at the Volunteer Fire Station in a minute or so. The run was to start at 2 pm. When I arrived at about 11:45, only a few bikes were parked in the parade line. I parked on the side because I wasn’t going to ride with them. I walked into the fire station, and saw everybody eating what was described as delicious pork BBQ. They fed the bik-
ers before the run instead of after like many other toy runs. I left a small stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines on one of the tables for all to read. I walked over to the area where the bikers would be riding down the hill so I could get pictures of them as they rode in. There were young boys wearing reflective vests parking the bikes in lines so that they all could leave safely. For a while, there were no other bikers arriving; then it was a non-stop line of bikers for the next hour or so. I tried to get pictures of them all. Almost all of the bikes were Harleys with a couple other brands thrown in to spice it up.

One of the Harleys had a scooter sidecar bolted to it with an old St. Bernard dog by the name of Rocky inside. He looked very comfortable riding in the sidecar, and was an instant attraction when they stopped in the parade line. Everybody crowded around to take pictures of the dog in a sidecar. Later, a friend and I looked at the little sidecar, and realized that it wasn’t attached very well to the bike. There was some damage on the front For a while, there of the sidecar that indicated that it had been wrecked a were no other bikers arriving; then it was a time or two. In the crowd were groups of different motorcycle clubs – many wore their specific colors. There are never any problems between bike clubs at toy runs. It’s like a neutral zone for any outstanding problems. Since I bought Miss Vickie, I look for Victory motorcycles in the crowd. There were quite a few. I was surprised since Polaris stopped building new Victory motorcycles last January. The bikers realize that the Victory is a great bike.

All the time I was there, a few young girls were wandering through the crowd selling 50/50 tickets. The pot grew to more than $3,400, and the winner walked away with a cool $1,700 to help with his Christmas shopping. They were also selling event T-shirts. All the profits go to help Polk County children. On my way to the front of the line, I met a man who was riding a Can-Am Spyder. We started talking and I learned that he was 85 years old. He rides regularly through the year and loves his new ride. His granddaughter was riding on the back with him. She was all smiles as they were getting ready for the ride. I took a lot of pictures as the bikes left. They estimated that there were over 600 bikes. They completely filled the parking area. The route was described on their website (http://www. polkcounty.org/county/toy_run/toy_run.html) so that anybody could watch the bikes go by – and I’m sure that there were many. The police blocked off the road, and escorted the ride to the Columbus, NC courthouse where the toys would be dropped off. It was very well organized, and I’ll probably go again next year, but I’ll meet them at the courthouse. I’m sure that there will be some great pictures there, too.

31st Annual Bikers Of Gaston County Toy Run By Wally Wersching On Sunday, November 26th, the 31st Annual Bikers Of Gaston County Toy Run was held at the Erwin Community Center in Gastonia, NC. The run was scheduled to start at 1 pm, They looked like ride through a few small they just rolled communities with police off a photo shoot escort, and eventually for a biker maga- wind up at the Westfield zine. Eastridge Mall parking lot to drop off the toys. When I left home at 10:30 am it was chilly but sunny. It was supposed to get into the lower 60’s by the afternoon. I overdressed for the ride to Gastonia. I’d rather be too warm than chilled to the bone. I was comfortable riding on the interstate. I exited at Rte. 321, and headed south. I turned right onto Davidson Street. The community center was a couple blocks on the right. When I parked, there were only a few other bikes in the little park that surrounded the center. I knew that in a short time, the park would be full of all kinds of motorcycles. I dropped a small stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines at the welcome table, and then got a Krispy Kreme donut. The
Krispy Kreme donut is a Southern specialty. They are delicious - especially when warm. They offered donuts and coffee for as long as they lasted. I talked with a young man who rode in on his Indian Chieftain Dark Horse. It is a beautiful bike, but has too many gadgets for me. He was bragging about the big screen infotainment unit. He still hasn’t figured out all the functions and features. As we talked, I noticed that there was a constant influx of motorcycles. Most came as one’s and two’s but there were quite a few large groups – all wearing their colors. I had never heard about most of the clubs – mainly because I don’t go into Gastonia or Charlotte very often. I also noticed that some of their bikes were altered. Some were “Crotch Rockets” with an extended swing arm which made their wide rear wheel seem like it was stuck way behind the bike. Bob Karney – Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer had a van at the event with two young ladies in Christmas garb. They were handing out 2018 Karney Law calendars. They were also signing them because Roxie and Leslie were in the calendar as Miss April and Miss June. They were very friendly, posing for pictures with anyone who wanted a picture with them. There were a few smaller parking areas on either side of the main road through the park. They were filled with bikes parked every which way. It would be interesting to see how they would safely leave for the run. A lady drove up in her Polaris Slingshot. I talked to her and her husband. She really loves her Slingshot. She opted for the most expensive model because it had all the options she wanted. It was more reasonable to let the factory install the options rather than doing it after she bought the cheaper model. She drives it everywhere, and puts her baby granddaughter with her car seat in it, too. She sometimes lets her husband drive it but most of the time, he rides “Shotgun”. She said that it’s hers, not his. Most of the bikes were cruisers – Harleys and the like. I

saw a group ride in with about a dozen Victory Cross-Country bikes. I walked over to look at the bikes which were all slightly customized. I asked if they were part of a Victory club, and they said that they just really like Victory motorcycles. As I watched the bikes roll in, I saw some very extensive customs. They looked like they just rolled off a photo shoot for a biker magazine. One of the more unusual machines was a T-Rex three-wheeler. It is similar to the Slingshot with two front wheels and one rear, but the T-Rex is much smaller. It looked like the guy driving it was having a lot of fun. Later, I saw a group of Windjammers. They were there to pass out flyers for their upcoming toy run in Shelby, NC. We had a brief conversation, then they had to start distributing those flyers. It was getting close to the start of the run. Then I noticed probably the best-looking Victory CrossCountry I had ever seen. It was perfect including the script Victory name on the tank. The color of the paint was great and the detailing was outstanding. I wish I could keep “Miss Vickie” that clean. I checked my watch, and it was after 1 pm. The run hadn’t started. There were still many bikes rolling in. I managed to leave with little effort, and was on I-85 heading west in short order. I arrived home about 1:45 – in time to watch another Carolina Panther’s victory. It was a very interesting Sunday afternoon. I will definitely go to next year’s toy run. I never know what I’ll see rolling in or who I’ll meet.

4th Annual Wounded Vet Run By: Johnny Reb I need to start this article with an apology to a guy I met at Hometown Harley-Davidson. His name is “Postal”. He is in a club called American Infidels. He invited me to cover a great benefit for wounded Marines called North Carolina’s 4th Annual Wounded Vet Run. The event was held Saturday, December 2nd, and brother, I was really looking forward to attending this event. The run started and ended at the VFW POST 9133 in Jacksonville, NC. Food, raffle items, and a 50/50 drawing were offered. Music was provided by Freeway. This year’s event was to benefit Sgt. Chris Hancock who lost his legs overseas. I’m not sure of the circumstances, so I will not speculate. Suffice it to say, he deserves any and all we can do for this Marine. I will close with a heartfelt apology for not going to this event. It couldn’t be helped but a man is only as good as his word. Thank you for the invite Postal and I hope to see you again brother. 15th Annual Chesnee Toy Run
By: Wally Wersching The city of Chesnee, SC has been holding conventional toy runs for many years. Conventional – meaning that bikers ride in with toys, gather outside in the cold until the short ride, then come back to town to eat free food. In some cases, the weather has been dangerous for motorcycle riding – rain, cold, and strong winds. The city of Chesnee, Dennis from Chesnee Classic Cycle, and the local Legends Chapter of the AMCA (Antique Motorcycle Club of America) changed the toy run completely into a combined Toy Run and Cruise-In for antique and classic bikes, and cars. It’s held at the Chesnee Shrine Club on Rte. 11 a mile west of downtown Chesnee. So, if it is cold, people can be warm inside the clubhouse while
they eat delicious free food, and listen to the live band. This year, it was “Vic Velvet” providing the entertainment. All the proceeds of the event still go to the Chesnee Kops Kids Program that helps over a hundred children during the Christmas Season. I left home about 12:00 driving my 1972 Pontiac GTO with

the sun shining, and the temps in the mid 40’s. I decided to drive the GTO instead of riding “Miss Vickie’ because there are always a lot of bikes but not too many cars at the Chesnee event. I pulled into the Shrine Club parking lot at about 12:30, and parked at the end of the line of cars. The young high school student who was showing me where to park told me after I got out that the ’72 GTO was his “dream car”. He took all kind of pictures with his phone, and kept asking me a lot of questions about the car. I was glad that I drove the car because it made his day. The Legends chapter of the AMCA brought many of their bikes, and had a booth set up for the silent auction. They were very friendly with all the people – showing them the benefits of joining their chapter. They were going to pull the winning raffle ticket for the 1972 Harley at 3 pm. They had been selling tickets for it for most of the year. The legendary Pete Hill was there ready to talk with anyone who would walk up and ask him a question. He holds so many records with his Harley Knuckleheads that it would be difficult to write them all down. Needless to say, he really is a legend in the sport of drag racing, and a member of the AMA Hall of Fame. There were a couple lines of classic cars and trucks – all shining in the bright afternoon sun. With more cars and bikes rolling in, the lot was filling fast. The first car to catch my eye was what looked like a 1932 REO Royale. It was very impressive with the dual side-mount spare tires. The car looked very original, too. The body had a lot of surface rust and the windows were clouding up to where it would be hard to see out. It was very difficult to see the interior through those windows. It is a very unusual and rare car. One car that came in on a trailer was a homemade Chevy II El Camino. It looked pretty good – very unusual. I talked with the owner and he said that it still needed some finishing touches. The car started as a station wagon, and his brother wanted a truck so it became an El Camino. When he started it to pull it off the trailer, I could tell that the engine was modified a little too much to drive on the street. It had solid lifters and a radical cam. The engine died a few times while he was getting to his parking place. When Dennis gave the OK, the free hot dogs and hamburgers were served. There was an instant line for the food. I heard people say that the food was delicious. This type of Toy Run/Cruise-In will be a winner for years to come. People were talking much more, and just the thought of being able to go inside if it were to rain, will bring in a lot more people – not only bikers. There’s a large parking lot behind the building where the spectators parked. Later in the afternoon, a $300 door prize was given away – compliments of the Tom McGraw’s Motorcycle Law Group. Each person bringing a toy got a chance to win. I left about 1:30, and headed north on Rte. 221. I wanted to stop in at the 18th Annual Rutherford County Toy Run. They hold theirs on the same day as Chesnee’s, and it’s always difficult to go to both.

24th Annual His Laboring Few Toy Run By: David Burnette On December 2, 2017, His Laboring Few Biker Ministry had their 24th annual toy run to give Christmas to underprivileged kids in the area. I thought the coolest thing was that the toys are given to the parents of the kids so they can give them to them on Christmas Day with the ministry not taking credit for the gifts. The weather was just a little cool, but not too bad considering it had rained the night before. About 40 bikes lined up along the road in front of Preacher Steve’s Leathers located at 4470 Old Highway 29 in Thomasville, NC for the ride. We took a short ride over to HIs Laboring Few church building at 812 Martin Luther King Drive in Thomasville where there was a meal prepared for us. We had a lot of nice door prizes free for all the guest riders given away we also sold raffle tickets for other items. There were a few things that were auctioned off as well. All total $412 and several toys were given there. Well it didn’t stop there later that evening we were invited to go to Joymongers Brewing Co. in Greensboro where John Hill of Select Cycles and The Piedmont Blues Preservation Society raised over $600 and a van load of toys for the cause as well. They had live music by Cory Luetjen and The Traveling

Blues Band. If you like the Allman Brothers you would have loved these guys. There was a pretty good crowd there to enjoy the music and craft beer. Benefit For St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
By: Johnny Reb I was invited to attend a benefit for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by my friend and client Jeff, from D&Q Motorsports. The event was held at Char-Grill in Benson on November 18th. Char-Grill was also a sponsor of this event along with Four Oaks Bank and D&Q Motorsports. Me and two of my brothers decided to leave early in the morning, Slim, Nobody, and myself. It was a clear and chilly morning when we headed out, cloudy and rainy when we left to return home! We got to Char-Grill in Benson and the adjacent parking lot was full of classic cars, hot rods, street rods, and beautiful restorations. However, the motorcycle lot was a little disappointing as far as turnout, / but not in quality! The first bike that caught my eye was a barn find all original 1957 Harley Davidson Hummer. The little 125cc bike was so original it still wore its original square cut sidewall tires! Wayne Beasley is the proud owner of this little gem. He told me that this bike belonged to his father-in-law and his wife said keep it just the way her daddy had it. So, Wayne got the old carburetor cleaned and rebuilt and the jug honed out, and she runs like a top. I’m talking one kick and it’s just purring! The next motorcycle I want to mention is one of the most beautiful trikes I have ever seen. It’s an Evo powered thing of beauty, black with hot rod flames and a handmade box on the back. Just a simple clean and well-built trike. It was built by

By: Shannon Rights On November 18, 2017 CBA/ABATE of NC held their annual training seminar with the awards banquet following in the evening. Each year following chapter elections CBA/ABATE hosts a free training seminar for any members who would like to attend. This allows incoming officers to gain valuable knowledge about their positions before getting started in January. The training seminar this year offered a legislative training breakout where attendees learned how a bill becomes a law in North This program Carolina and reaches more than how to approach 50,000 students legislators in the Capital. Training took place from 10 am until about 4 pm. We then broke to get ready for the banquet. Everyone arrived back into the conference room which was setup for the dinner. Little Richards BBQ catered in a fabulous meal of BBQ and all the trimmings including banana pudding for dessert. Once everyone was seated, we were treated to a magician wondering the room performing tricks for all. This banquet is one time during the year that we sit back, relax, and enjoy the comradarie of each other’s company. Representative John Torbett has a special place in the hearts of all CBA/ABATE members since he does so much to help with all things concerning motorcyclists in North Carolina. He and his wife, Vidda Torbett attended the banquet this year. They are both members of CBA/ABATE. CBA/ABATE State President James Buckner presented Representative Torbett with the Legislator of the Year award and Vidda Torbett was awarded the Legislative Assistant of the Year award. We all know Vidda is the one who makes John look good! The Central District of North Carolina Coordinator Robert “Shaggy” Causey was given an appreciation award for his long years of service to CBA/ABATE chapters in the Piedmont area. He is now a man without a home since he decided to step down to allow Michael Morris to become Central District Coordinator. Shaggy may not have the title, but he will always be around working in the background to keep everything running smoothly. He might even get a little more saddle time in now that he won’t be hauling so much stuff on his bike! The Presidential Chapter of the Year went to Granville County CBA. James Buckner also surprised long time State

Treasurer, Darlene Kimsey with a Presidential Honor Award for all her hard work in keeping the finances straight within CBA/ABATE. Chapter of the Year went to Alamance County CBA, 1st runner up went to Charlotte CBA. 2017 Membership Chapter of the Year went to Buncombe County CBA, who host the Hot Springs Rally each year in the mountains of NC. The rally is one of the biggest in the area and was recently changed to only allow members of a State Motorcycle Rights Organization to attend. Buncombe County CBA gave a discount on memberships to allow people to attend who weren’t already members of a SMRO. Gaston County CBA was the 1st runner up for Membership Chapter of the Year. Raleigh CBA/ABATE won the 2017 MSAP Chapter of the Year with the Charlotte chapter taking home 1st runner up. These awards were given to show appreciation for the hard work the chapters do to make sure that area high school students receive the mandatory 1 hour of Motorcycle Safety Awareness that the state requires to get their driver’s license. Each chapter works with area schools going into the drivers’ education classes to teach the students from the motorcyclist’s point of view. We do this free of charge to the schools and students. This program reaches more than 50,000 students a year in North Carolina. CBA/ABATE of NC believes that each student we reach will be better prepared to notice bikers on the road resulting in less motorcyclists being killed on NC roads. Honorable mentions were received by David Blum (Alamance) and Steve Ensley (Buncombe) for their roles in helping with the MSAP work. Keith Long (Charlotte) won the 2017 Lee Ann Redwine award. Charlie Boone won the 2017 Sonny Colvin award. Charlotte CBA won the 2017 Legislative Chapter of the Year award. The highlight of the evening was when long time member Cindy Hodges was called up to the podium to present a special award! Cindy has been a member of CBA/ABATE for more than 35 years starting out in the Charlotte Chapter then moving onto the Raleigh Chapter when she left the Charlotte area. She brought tears to the eyes on many reminiscing about the old days when she first started out in her journey. Cindy Hodges presented Rick & Myra Nail with the Meritorious Service Award for their longtime 44-year contribution to biker’s rights in North Carolina. The award had both names on it, but we all know that Myra Nail is the glue that held everything together, so Rick could get his work done in the organization. So, when you see them out at the next Charlotte CBA Swap Meet in March at Rowan County Fairgrounds; make sure you thank them for their dedication to bikers in North Carolina. Mountain Rest, SC And Beyond
By: Bill Gallaway The Greenville Chapter of Star Touring & Riding stayed in South Carolina for their October Ride. This was one of our smaller rides; we had 9 bikes and 12 riders. The ride was planned to see some fall colors and visit some scenic overlooks during the ride, which made a stop along the way at Mountain Rest Café for lunch. Our other stops were Sassafras Mountain, the high point of South Carolina at 3,560 feet, and most recently downgraded to 3,533 feet due to recent grading that lowered the natural height. Another stop for a look see was the overlook known as the Wigington Road Lake Jocassee Overlook. During our ride, the trees hadn’t begun to change to fall colors so here’s hoping for next month. Marines Toys For Tots Ride At Ray Price Harley-Davidson By: Kris Weiss The day started off with tremendous energy and buzz as the motorcycles rolled in with presents in tow for the annual Marines Toys For Tots Ride at Ray Price Harley-Davidson. The Christmas tree in the front of the dealership was already loaded with toys donated by customers, employees, and the Raleigh HOG Chapter over the past few weeks. Over 50 bicycles were pushed up the street from one of the nearby buildings. Volunteers from the HOG chapter had been working on these bicycles all year long, taking them from a previously unrideable state to a reconditioned bike that local children will be able to enjoy. Loading the military truck with toys is always fun as everyone formed a human chain to move toys from beside the Christmas tree to the trucks in the parking lot. With Santa and

25th Annual Brunswick County Motorcycle And Classic Car Toy Run
By: David Burnette On December 9, 2017 Ms. Pat and I had the privilege of attending the 25th Annual Brunswick County Motorcycle & Classic Car Toy Run down at the NC coast. This event isn’t like a lot of toy runs here. You get to see where the money goes that is collected throughout the year because you get the honor of escorting the kids on a shopping trip to Walmart. This year they had a budget of $125 per kid - half to spend on clothing and the rest on whatever they wanted. A couple days beforehand the weather was a little sketchy. It was snowing at home in Charlotte and heavy rain and cold at the beach, but this event was a rain or shine event and the kids were going to be there regardless. On the morning of the toy run the rain stopped and it warmed up a little, so there were a few bikes in the run along with several classic cars as well. But the rest of us sissy’s rode in our cages. LOL. The ride started at Brunswick Island Baptist Church down near Holden Beach where there were lots of door prizes to win
and an auction of some cool stuff all raising money for the kids. Before we left out for the shopping, we were treated to some great food served up by the volunteers at the church. The ride was escorted by the Brunswick County Sheriffs’ Department. They did a great job. When we reached the Walmart in Southport, while waiting on the kids to show up, we had a 50/50 drawing and the winner donated all the money … but this event back to the cause. It was over was a rain or $350. Awesome! Also, this year tickets were shine event and sold throughout the year for $20 the kids were for a chance to win a golf cart going to be there and trailer. A lady named Jerry regardless. Ashley was the winner. Congrats on your win. I really wanted to win, but that’s how it goes! The Cape Fear Cruisers of Southport also presented a check for $6100 to the cause! We ended up with plenty of volunteers to take the kids inside to shop, which is a good thing because last I heard we had 145 kids to shop with and spent over $20,000 There’s nothing like seeing the joy and excitement on a child’s face when they get to pick out the things that they want and need that, otherwise, they probably wouldn’t receive. It brought joy to my soul knowing I had a small part in this. I want to thank Jerome Munna and his family that own The Sign Shop in Supply, NC for heading up this event every year. You guys are awesome! Also, Jerome wanted to thank all the sponsors and volunteers because without them none of this would be possible. God Bless and thank you all. ing Goods on South Main Street. This annual event is an opportunity for riders to get together and visit, as many of the participants have been riding in this parade for many years. Those who were first timers, were in awe of the numbers of riders and bikes in the staging area. Even though the ride didn’t start until 2 pm, some riders arrived as early as 11:00 to get set up for the ride. The ride started promptly at 2 pm and followed Main Street to Mall Rd to the Anderson Civic Center parking lot. Upon arrival at the Anderson Civic Center, motorcyclists carried their toys to the volunteers that waited where the toys were loaded onto trucks for donation to Anderson Cares and Shares that make sure they get to those families in need. The weather this time of the year can sometimes be very uncooperative, however this year we were blessed to have a wonderful late fall day with sunshine and the temperature at ride time of somewhere in the low 60’s. The riders, an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 of them, from as far away as North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee rode with us from South Carolina with teddy bears and toys strapped to their bikes and sticking out of their saddlebags. All along the 5-mile route there were families of on-lookers taking pictures and waving to the bikers wearing Santa hats on bikes decorated with wreaths and lights as they rode by. Last reports state there were over 3 trucks full of toys. Bikers again show their true colors by supporting the children at Christmas. Again this year, the toy parade was sponsored by the Confederates Motorcycle Club and friends and the Anderson Independent Mail. Let’s take our hats off to everyone that helped out and rode in the parade. If you missed the parade this year, try to plan on attending next year. It will be a parade you won’t soon forget and it probably won’t be your last.

By: Dark On November 25th, I went on my third toy ride of the year. Though it was my third, it was my favorite. This is why. First, I would like to thank everyone who helped. Everyone at New Bern Harley-Davidson, New Bern H.O.G. Chapter, Temple Baptist Church of New Bern, and so many others you would not believe. Even Trent Cadillac Buick GMC for letting us use their parking lot and a big thank you to all the Law Enforcement, NC Hwy Patrol, New Bern Police, Craven County Sheriff, Lenoir County Sheriff, Kinston Police, and many more that helped us have a safe ride. Ok, back to why is my favorite ride. Most rides you toss your toy in a box or back of a truck. Here, the kids are there and you hand toys to them so you can see their faces, too.

Here, you are not just bringing joy to their Christmas, you are helping to change or shape their lives. The Kennedy Children’s Home was started back in 1912 by William Lafayette Kennedy and his wife Emily Hardee Kennedy, a childless couple. They donated their 1200-acre plantation to the Baptist Children’s Home of North Carolina. They welcomed their first child in 1914. Mrs. Kennedy was so devoted to the legacy of caring for children (in that time it was very uncommon to care for someone else’s children) that she sold her diamonds to build a third cottage in memory of her father. Mrs. Kennedy fell ill, but the construction on the cottage was completed. She thanked the builders and died that very night. Now it provides residential services for North Carolina children who are experiencing family crisis, abuse, or neglect. As for the ride, it was the 25th anniversary which was started by Jimmy Allen, the owner of New Bern Harley-Davidson. When I left my house, it was 45 degrees, but by the time the ride started it was almost in the 60’s. All the intersections and the entrance ramp onto Hwy 70 were blocked to accommodate somewhere between 700-800 bikes and over 1200 riders. We met at the Kennedy Children’s Home in Kinston for lunch. They had a ton of door prizes. The 50/50 was $1473 and the gentlemen who won it, donated it back to the home. Yes, he gave it back! The total money raised was $21,490 which included $2000 from New H.O.G Chapter, $1473 from the 50/50, and then the Temple Baptist Church of New Bern raised another $9,000! Temple Baptist Church also had motorcycle day Sunday after church services. Now, hopefully, you will understand why it was a great day for New Bern Harley-Davidson, the Kennedy Children’s Home, and for all that were there.

Where Has The Time Gone? Bros and Bro-ettes, Here we go again. Another year has gone by. We didn’t get to do as much ministry work as we needed to the first couple of months of this year, but we picked it up the rest of the months. We all need to stop using excuses. “Well, I don’t have the money.” But you know if you’re supposed to go and do it, the Lord will provide. You don’t have to beg. He will put it on someone’s heart to help you. I want to thank the Lord for providing for David and myself to go and minister. He is opening up more doors. Just ask the Lord to help and show you where to go and ask Him to help and send the people your way. No, we’re not perfect. We’re just His servants wanting to be used. By the time this magazine comes out a lot of people will have made New Year’s resolutions, some we will keep and some we won’t. We have lost several friends and family members this past year, some to sickness and some in wrecks. Have you ever thought, “What is my life?” Sooner or later we’ll all die. Some will be ready, some won’t. James 4:14. Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow, For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time than vanished away. Hebrews 9:27. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement. After you read this, think about it and your life and what
you want for the New Year. You want it to be better? If so pray about it and ask the Lord to come into your heart and help you. It’s only a prayer away and He is waiting with open arms. You can live like you want and make all the New Year’s resolutions you want, but if you don’t live God’s way you’ll pay for it in the end. Remember Galatians 6:7. 37th Annual Southern Scooters Toy Run By: Marylou Brewton It seems odd to think that 37 years ago, Southern Scooters in Beaufort, SC started a tradition that continues. Odder yet to think that some of those children who benefitted from a toy, stuffed animal or a game who might remember those 40 bikers on about 20 assorted motorcycles 37 years ago just might have been riding with us today. Bikers hold traditions to heart. Today, Stitch, owner of Southern Scooters said, “Giving without recognition is truly from the heart - that black leathered traditional heart.” Thanks, Stitch, for keeping us rolling. Think about this, we averaged over 100 bikes a year, that’s almost 4,000 toys, probably more. We averaged $700 a year over the years - that’s $25,000. It’s a privilege to gift this to our local Salvation Army.
