We all can while away the cold winter nights planning for the first ride of the new year. All it takes for some is dry roads and a destination. That ride may begin with a new motorcycle, or “souping up” your current ride, or maybe a custom paint job and new handlebars. For all these hearts’ desires to come true, peruse the pages of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine to locate the shop or dealership that can make your plans come true. As far as your destination, check out our Cruisin’ Calendar for parties, rallies, all manners of rides, and bike shows already on the schedule for the first quarter of 2019. 32nd Annual Randolph Co. CBA Mills Children’s Home Toy Run

By: David Burnette n December 2nd, the Randolph County Concerned Biker Association hosted the 32nd Annual Mills Children’s Home toy run. The Mills Home operates under the umbrella of The Baptist Children’s Homes of NC, aiding around 1200 children and their families including residential group care. They also provide maternity services for unmarried women and other support services as well. It is so great to think that folks have been supporting this toy run for 32 years. Think of the many children that have passed through the Mills’ doors that have a memory of bikers coming at Christmas time and bringing gifts for them. Thanks, should also go out to the gentlemen who had the vision to set this toy run in motion thirty-two years ago. Thank you, Buddy Grainger and Walter Jackson. They were fixtures for many years but neither participates in this run any more. Thanks especially to Randolph County Concerned Bikers Association that have been the hands and hearts for this toy run over the

years and continue to do a spectacular job every year. The run started out at the Randolph Mall in Asheboro NC with around 750 bikers registered and about 1000 people total there. Also, there were several cars following the motorcycles as well. As usual, there were bystanders lined along the route up highway 64 to cheer the bikers as they went by. If you have never seen that many bikes ride by at one time it’s really a sight to see. It’s a lot of fun for those riding and the ones watching. Back at the Mills Home, there were all the kids waiting with signs to welcome the bikers. Needless to say, they were excited when all the bikes rolled in. It always touches my heart to see all the support from the biker community showing up to bless these kids with a great Christmas. A little while before the bikers showed up the truck load of toys rolled in loaded with all kinds of great stuff for the kids. Well done brothers and sisters thanks for coming out on a cold and wet day to support this cause. Not only did y’all bring a truck full of toys but also raised about $7345.00. That’s pretty awesome. Thanks to all the many sponsors who

contributed to this successful toy run. Once everybody got inside the gym we had a short program. Steven, with Cox’s Harley-Davidson, one of the long-time sponsors of the toy run, came up and thanked everyone for showing up and supporting it. Thanks guys. We also had singing and heard about the birth of Jesus from His Laboring Few Biker Ministry. The staff introduced themselves and the kids that were in their care. Then Santa came and greeted the kids, so it was finally time for the kids to open their gifts. It’s always cool to see the excitement on their faces as they opened their gifts. God Bless all of those who make this possible, see y’all there next year.

16th Annual Chesnee Toy Cruise-In

By Wally Wersching he City of Chesnee, SC has held toy runs for many years. Bikers, with toys strapped to their bikes, would gather, go for a short ride, and come back to the park area to have some free food while listening to live entertainment on the bandstand. The toy run was always held the Sunday before Thanksgiving, so the weather for riding motorcycles has been unpredictable at best. Since 2015, the City of Chesnee, Chesnee Classic Cycles, and the local Legends Chapter of the AMCA (Antique Motorcycle Club of America) changed the toy run completely to a “Toy Cruise-In” for antique and classic bikes and cars. The Chesnee Shrine Club on Rte. 11, a mile west of Chesnee, hosts the event so if

the weather is inclement, people can be warm inside the clubhouse while they eat free delicious food, and listen to the live band. This year, “Vic Velvet” provided the entertainment. All the proceeds of the event continue to go to the Chesnee Kops Kids Program that helps area children during the Christmas season. I left home about 11:45 riding “Miss Vickie” with the sun shining, and the temps in the mid 40’s. The ride to Chesnee was pleasant with little traffic. I pulled into the Shrine Club parking lot at about 12:15. There were a few cars and motorcycles scattered around the parking area. A group of bikers just rode in from Spartanburg H-D and were parking their bikes when I arrived. The Legends chapter of the AMCA brought many of their

bikes, and had a booth set up. They are very friendly with all the people – showing them the benefits of joining their chapter. The legendary Pete Hill and his wife were there ready to share their stories with anyone. He holds so many records with his Harley Knuckleheads. He is a legend in the sport of Drag Racing, a member of the AMA Hall of Fame, along with being a member of the local Legends Chapter of the AMCA. There were a couple lines of classic cars and trucks – all shining in the bright afternoon sun. With more cars and bikes rolling in, the lot was filling fast. The first car I noticed was a 1970 Plymouth Superbird. Developed specifically for NASCAR racing, the Superbird, a modified Road Runner, was Plymouth’s follow-on design to the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona which was the first American car to be designed aerodynamically using a wind tunnel and computer analysis. That was when NASCAR actually drove production cars in the race. Now, all the cars are special made for more safety. I talked to a man on a Harley trike with a prosthetic left leg. He was a retired Navy Chief. He told me how he lost his leg. He was riding his motorcycle on a cross country trip and was run over by a semi and spent months in a hospital recovering only to lose his leg to infection. He has a great outlook on life, and is grateful for every day he has. Then I spotted an unusual 1954 Chevy Bel-Air convertible as it drove in. It had every ornamental option available in 1954. I talked with the owner, and he said that it had been stored in a barn since 1963. He bought it earlier this year, and got it running again. The original “Blue Flame” 235 sixcylinder engines were easy to work on. It brought back many memories. Then a man drove in in an early 1900s’ REO Touring car. I was told that he owns many old cars, and stores them in a warehouse. I wanted to talk with him, but he quickly went inside, and I never saw him again. I went inside, but it was so dark in there that I couldn’t see anything except the Christmas tree with the toys around the base of it, and the lights on the stage where “Vic Velvet” would be performing later. Later in the afternoon, a $300.00 door prize was given away – compliments of the Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. Each person bringing a toy got a chance to win. This type of Toy Run/Cruise-In will be a winner for years to come. People were talking much more, and just the thought of being able to go inside if it were to rain, will bring in a lot more people – not only bikers. There’s a large parking lot behind the building where the spectators parked. I left about 1:30PM, and headed north on Rte. 221. I wanted to stop in at the 19th Annual Rutherford County Toy Run. They hold theirs on the same day as Chesnee’s, and it’s always a challenge to go to both.

It was cool and very rainy as we passed through Winston-Salem on our way. By the time we reached Salisbury, it was a down pour. We kept trekking down the interstate to Charlotte and when we reached Bojangle’s Coliseum, at around 11:20, we were so happy to see vendors set up and bikes already beginning to line up. Mike Wiggins with the Charlotte C.B.A. was a gracious host and pointed us in the right direction and offered to help in any way. We were passing out the holiday issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines to the riders. Everyone was in great

spirits and you just could feel the Christmas cheer in the air. Some of the riders were pretty wet but that did not seem to dampen their spirits. As the day progressed the parking lot was filling up quite nicely with an estimated 500 bikes showing up on this cloudy, dreary day. Everyone was laughing and ready for the ride out to Harley-Davidson of Charlotte to deliver the toys. There was Santa and elves carousing the parking lot as well as riders dressed for the festive occasion. Even the sweet little pups were dressed up to show off their Christmas spirit. It really blesses the heart to see so many riders gather to help give some kids a Merry Christmas. Not even the weather or the Ole Grinch could keep them away. The Charlotte Police department did a great job stopping the traffic and leading the bikes on to their destination. It certainly

Sergeant Joel G Goyco Memorial Ride

The soldier, 40-year-old Sergeant Joel Goyco of Bellport, New York served with the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was in service with the US Army since 2007. His friends attending his service discussed how honorable a homegoing service it had been. They stated the military sendoff was befitting as Joel was our hero. They talked about good times, such as Joel beginning his adventures of riding. Things that he said like he never knew the freedom of the road until he started riding his own motorcycle. The stories went on to honor and remember Joe, their riding partner. The memorial ride for Stg Joel G. Goyco, (9/19/197811/7/2018) took place on Saturday, December 1, 2018. The memorial event began at Cycle Gear. The bikers met and circled up

for Joel. Everyone in attendance, to honor Joel. Joel rode for so many rides, the Fallen Soldiers, Missing In Action, and a whole host of charity rides. He loved riding and this day everyone rode for him, in his honor and much respect. Our hero, our heart--this ride is for you. Encircled in the parking lot before the ride began, this speech was prepared to be his biker family’s farewell: “A prayer for Joel Goyco, A tribute to a fallen solider: This is a touching day and I want to thank everyone for being part of this gathering. Today we say good bye to a great friend, mentor, biker, and above all else an honorable solider. Joel traveled around the world and many places he had never before known as a solider with the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. There were many times he felt far away from home and he lost holidays with family members. Just one of the sacrifices he made for his country. We can all say Joel was a man of “Smiles” and if you ever rode with him or knew him, he was always making you laugh or helping you see the good in life. He mentored and inspired many coworkers and friends. Joe’s first group ride was with Rolling Thunder in September of 2017. Joe stated he never felt so protected in his entire life, riding with a pack of Harleys. He was just a beginner rider at that time and from that moment he fell in love with riding. Every waking moment he would want to ride and always told me that he never felt real freedom within himself until he learned how to ride. Joe always thanked me endlessly for teaching him how to ride. It was an honor to know him and ride with him. When we light up the candles and trim our trees during the holiday, pray an angel watches over us and our freedom. Know that each of you are in our hearts. Remember the life Joe left us is a life of freedom.” (Given by Cristina Hendricks) Thank you all for everything you do to honor our military men and women. We are so thankful for each and every service member. They are our heroes and this day we rode for Sgt. Joel G. Goyco because it is our duty to honor all that have served! 32nd Annual Bikers of Gaston County Toy Run By Wally Wersching n Sunday, November 25th, the 32nd Annual Bikers of Gaston County Toy Run was held at the Erwin Community Center in Gastonia, NC. The run was scheduled to start at 1:00PM, ride through a few small communities with police escort, and eventually wind up at the Westfield Eastridge Mall parking lot to drop off the toys. When I left home at 10:45AM, it was chilly (around 40 degrees), and foggy. It was supposed to get into the lower 60’s by the afternoon. I dressed appropriately for the ride to Gastonia – long johns, chaps, sweatshirt, and leather jacket along with my gauntlet winter gloves. I’d rather be too warm than chilled to the bone. I was comfortable riding on the interstate. I exited at Rte. 321, and headed south, and turned right onto Davidson Street. The community center was a couple blocks up on the right. When I parked, there were only a few other bikes in the little park that surrounded the center with the baseball field across the street. Last year, the park consisted of the main

road in front of the building, then a road to the right at the first intersection where bikes parked during the event, and led to two other parking lots where overflow bikes parked. That was also the way the run left the Erwin Community Center last year. Over the summer, the park blocked the road to the right, and made it all grass with a sidewalk. There was no way to get to the two outlying parking lots from the park, and no street to park the many bikes. I knew that in a short time, the park would be full of all kinds of motorcycles. I dropped a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines at the welcome table, and then got a Krispy Kreme donut. They offered donuts and coffee for as long as they lasted. I noticed that there was a constant influx of motorcycles. Most came as one’s and two’s but there were quite a few large groups – all wearing their colors. I had never heard about most of the clubs – mainly because I don’t go into Gastonia or Charlotte very often. The couple of smaller parking areas on either side of the main road through the park were filled with bikes parked every which way. It would be interesting to see how they would safely leave for the run. I also noticed that some of their bikes were altered. Some were “Crotch Rockets” with an extended swing arm which made their wide rear wheel seem like it was stuck way behind the bike. I cannot imagine the bike being very comfortable or handling very well – but they look cool, and go great in a straight line. Most of the bikes were cruisers – Harleys and the like. I saw a group ride in with about a dozen Victory Cross-Country bikes. I walked over to look at the bikes which were all slightly customized. I asked if they were part of a Victory club, and they said that they just really like Victory motorcycles. They were my kind of people! Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer had a van at the event

with two young ladies handing out 2019 calendars. They were very friendly posing for pictures with anyone who wanted a picture with them. Later Bob Karney rode in on his beautiful Harley Road-Glide custom. We spoke for a few minutes before he wandered off shaking everybody’s hand as he went – like a politician. I saw the Salvation Army box truck as it pulled up. The two men dressed in suits and ties looked out of place. Later I talked with one of them, and he was amazed by the sheer number of bikes in attendance. When I showed him the outlying parking lots full of bikes too, his eyes got as big as saucers as he spoke. He thought that there were thousands of bikes, and hoped that they’d have enough room in the truck for all the toys. I walked up the new sidewalk to the outlying parking lots. The lot on the right was full of Police squad cars and motorcycles that would escort the run to the mall. The lot to the left was quickly filling up with bikes. I walked in to look at them. I was surprised to see a Honda Rune in the mix of Harleys. Honda introduced the limited edition model in 2003 named the Valkyrie Rune with a 111.8 cu in engine. After I walked back to the center, I saw a group of Windjammers. They were there to pass out flyers for their upcoming toy run on December 15th in Shelby, NC. We had a brief conversation, and then they had to start distributing those flyers. It was getting close to the start of the run. I checked my watch, and it was after 1:00PM. The run hadn’t started yet. There were still many bikes rolling in and out again – looking for a place to park. I managed to leave, and on my way to I85, every gas station and restaurant parking lot was full of motorcycles. I was on I85 heading west in short order. I arrived home about 1:45. It was a very interesting Sunday afternoon. I will definitely go to next year’s toy run. I never know what I’ll see rolling in or who I’ll meet.

Greenville, SC ABATE’S 33rd Annual Toy Run

By: Bill Gallaway unday, December 2nd was the date for the 33rd Annual Toy Run to benefit the Julie Valentine Center and help provide a toy at Christmas to an underprivileged child. Riders started arriving around noon at the Greenville Shrine Club and hung out, meeting with other riders that many only see once a year. ABATE members and friends mingled and visited until the Parker District Fire Truck sounded the siren indicating it was 1:50 and KSU would be at 2:00 p.m. The mood was festive, and many riders wore Santa Hats and Santa’s helpers were also in festive dress. The number of riders was down considerably over last year due to the rain in the area that morning. The number of riders this year was somewhere in the 275 range. The weather however

could not have been better for the ride; the temperature was 73 degrees and very sunny. The 8-mile ride to the County Square from the Shrine Club was controlled by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department that did a fine job as they have in previous years with many more riders. Upon arrival at County Square, riders unloaded their presents into Santa’s box truck and then helped themselves to hot coffee, hot chocolate and water. If you missed the ride, make plans now for next year as it is always the first Sunday in December. Many thanks to everyone that made this ride a success.

Deathwish Motor Culture Toy Drive Bike Night

By: Buzz riday nights are made for partying and a Deathwish Motor Culture bike night is a party you don’t want to miss. Like most events this late in the year, we are all trying to make up for all the shenanigans we have pulled all year long by giving to charitable organizations and helping the less fortunate in the community. Well, all I know is the Deathwish Crew and their cohorts must have had a pretty wild year, and if you have ever hung out with these guys you know it’s true. Bikes were lined up outside the party deck at The Wing Co. in Cameron, NC, the HQ for the Deathwish Crew, seems the colder temps didn’t bother this crowd. Inside the bar was full, but there was at least one table open and after making some rounds outside I was lucky enough to grab a bite with my friends Zach and Kristen of The Rebel Spirit (look ‘em up). The Wing Co. has a great menu with wings, burgers, nachos and more. I had a banging double cheese burger with an over easy egg on it, it was tough to keep it out of my beard while it went down, but it was delicious. As if that meal wasn’t worth the trip, Deathwish’s main dude, Jeremy took to the mic with the help of Joie, Drew and Cornfield to give away some sweet raffle items. There were some cool wood signs, The Rebel Spirt swag, Red Oak Growlers, some sweet corn hole boards and of course some awesome Deathwish Motor Culture swag. The goal of raising as much bread as possible for two woman’s shelters, Haven and Family Promise of Lee County. Local tattoo artist Mike from Hot Rod Studios in Sanford got in on the gig too. Since the shelters have teenagers staying there, they came up with the idea to collect gift cards in exchange for raffle tickets for $500 worth of ink, that kind of voucher will make a heck of a stain on you. Although you didn’t have to be present to win, and the winner wasn’t present, the crowd came to a silence hoping that their name was pulled for such a killer prize. The 50/50 was the only prize left to claim, as the last few tickets were being purchased the tally ran up to $900 making the split a cool $450. Silence fell over the crowd again as the winning ticket was pulled. I sure hope the winner bought a round of beers for his buddies before he got away with that pocket full of cash! The night was still young and even though the festivities were over the night raged on. Friday night was made to party and the Deathwish Crew brought it again. Murphey’s 24th Annual Toy Run

By Wally Wersching is the Season- Yes, it’s the holiday season again. The way I know is that Murphey’s Toy Run has come and gone. His is always the first toy run of the year around here – the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Now it’s officially the Christmas Season. On Saturday November 17th, John Murphey of Murphey’s Scooter-Shed in Kings Mountain, NC held his 24th Annual Toy Run. The 50 mile police escorted ride benefits the Shriner’s Burn Center, Oxford Orphanage Masonic Home for Children, and the Kings Mountain Police Department “Shop with a Cop”. Murphey’s Scooter-Shed is located at 114 Camelot Court in Kings Mountain, NC. It’s in a residential neighborhood next to John’s home on a dead-end road. The easiest way to get to Murphey’s is to turn onto Bethlehem Road from Rte.74. This year, Bethlehem Road is blocked off for bridge construction. There is a detour route designated. The detour route is very pleasant with winding roads through scenic areas until it joins Bethlehem Road again. After following the detour signs, I got to Murphey’s at about 10:30AM. There were already a lot of bikes parked on the road in front of his house. Slowly, more and more bikes came down the road. In the past, after the road was full, the bikes were directed to park on the lawn in front of John’s house. This year the lawn was blocked off. It was very soggy, and would be dangerous to park anything on the grass. It rained for most of the week prior to the run. The sun finally came out on Friday. There was no time for the lawn to dry out. John must have gotten permission from his neighbors to park the bikes

on their driveways after the road was full. I walked to the small parking area around the shop, and dropped off a stack of “Full Throttle Carolinas” magazines on the table for the bikers who would be dropping off the toys. Later the area is full of bikers buying t-shirts, renewing old acquaintances, and making new ones while dropping off the toys. God continued to watch over John’s event. It was another beautiful sunny fall day with temps due to rise into the lower 60’s, which encouraged many bikers to come for the ride. It was almost perfect. The toys collected filled many huge boxes. This year Murphey asked for a $5.00 donation along with the new toy for

every person going on the run. That included the run, BBQ afterward, and live music by the “Backroad Band”. Everyone I met was having a great time. It always makes you feel good when you can help a child have a toy on Christmas morning. “Backroad Band” was already playing in the garage, and the cooks were getting the food ready. The BBQ served at Murphey’s is some of the best in the area. I walked down the road eyeing the long line of motorcycles, and heard many people laughing, and getting acquainted. I always like to get to the toy run early so I can visit with people before they leave. Down the row of beautiful motorcycles were a few Indian motorcycles, but most of the bikes were Harleys or Japanese Harley wannabees. I saw a few young people on sport bikes, a Can-Am Spyder, and two young ladies in a Polaris Slingshot. Then, a group of Indian motorcycles rolled in. It was probably one of the local Indian clubs. They are really beautiful motorcycles! There were two other Victory motorcycles at the run. Both were red Cross-Country models. While I was talking with one of the owners, he reminded me that we had met once before at a gas station in Polkville and that now he had over 100,000 miles on his bike with nothing to go wrong except replacing the clutch cable. There was another biker who was riding an old Harley Shovelhead. He’s owned it since new and he said that it has become part of him after all the years on sitting on that seat. At exactly 12:00 noon, the run began with a police escort with Murphey leading the way looking like Santa more every

year on his custom-made Indian look-alike bike. The route was planned ahead, and every intersection would be blocked off by either the police or fire departments. Again, I decided not to go on the run but to take pictures of the riders as they left. I always like to get Murphey’s large sign in the background as the bikes leave. At about mid-way, I started to walk back down the road taking pictures as I walked. I thought that I’d get a few good shots. They left quickly but still took about 15 minutes for all to pass. After all the bikes left, I headed back home. I took the detour route back to Rte. 74. I turned west on Rte. 74 toward Shelby but ran into traffic that was stopped to let the parade of Murphey’s bikes get onto Rte. 74. I knew what it was, but many drivers were confused as to why they were stopped for so long. They couldn’t see the bikes coming out of Bethlehem Road. I will definitely go again next year. It’s a great way to spend a late fall Saturday, and it helps a lot of kids have a Merry Christmas.

Ace Bakery’s 4th Annual Hogtoberfest By Wally Wersching n Saturday October 13th, the Ace Bakery located in Gaffney, SC held their 4th Annual Hogtoberfest “Dice Run” for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate. The Ace Bakery, part of Weston Foods, has corporate headquarters in Canada, but their hearts are deep in the South. All the proceeds raised during the event for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate were 100% matched by Ace Bakery with every dollar going to the Club. There were games, BBQ, music, a Lip Sync Contest, drinks, and a petting zoo for the kids! The Dice Run cost $25.00 to run. It started at Ace Bakery with stops at Strawberry Hill, Springs Tavern, Spartanburg H-D, SUDS, and ending back at the bakery. It was all described on a pre-printed card given to the participants. There was a map on the back too, to help anybody who was not familiar with the area, so they wouldn’t get lost on their way. The run was very well organized – only about 60 miles round trip. Everybody got a free t-shirt and

a wrist band when they registered. The best dice roll won $350.00, and the lowest roll won $200.00. It was one of those runs where everybody wins – especially the kids. I had heard about the run before but never was able to attend. There are so many other events going on during every weekend in the fall. I have to choose which ones to go to. This year, I made an effort to go to the Ace Bakery. I looked at the on-line map, so I knew where it was. I had traveled on Rte. 105 hundreds of times but never knew that the Ace Bakery was anywhere near. I left home a little after 8:00AM heading west on Rte. 150. It was a little chilly – in the low 50’s. It was the first time I had worn my leather jacket since early spring. It felt comfortable. I followed some back roads, and ended up on Rte. 105 just north of I-85. I crossed I-85, and then looked to the left. The road to the bakery was there – Corporate Drive. I turned in, and found myself in a beautiful industrial park with tree-lined winding roads leading to large buildings almost hidden from view. I saw the sun reflect off the chrome on a few bikes that were parked in a lot. I rode in, and parked near them. It was about 8:45 when I arrived. Registration didn’t start until 9:00AM so I was early. I watched as many bakery employees were busy setting up the tables to be used later after the run. I could tell they were bakery employees because they were wearing hair nets and other protective gear. They all had jobs to do, and it went very smoothly. Before long, everything was ready to go. I placed a stack of magazines on the registration table for the bikers who would attend the event. One of the employees rolled out a rack full of bakery goods – snacks and such for all the participants to eat. While I was talking with the two other early birds, the plant manager walked up, and gave us a bag of the bakery’s treats. We talked with him for a short while. He was very busy making sure that everything went as planned. He mentioned that the bakery

bakes over a million loaves of bread each day. That’s a lot of bread! At 9:00AM registration started. When a large group rode in, there was a line at the registration table. Before long, the line was gone, and everybody was registered. They were very efficient and organized. I met a few new friends. One couple had Indian motorcycles, and we talked for a while about the Polaris Company. Everyone has an opinion as to why they stopped making the Victory motorcycles. Then, there was a couple who rode in on very similar Suzuki Katanas. We talked for a while about possibly riding a trike when we got older. They were in their early 60’s so they were planning ahead. The plant manager got on stage, and welcomed all of us. He seemed like he really wanted us to have a pleasant experience at the bakery. He did his best to make that happen. There was a group of kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs walking around enjoying the petting zoo, and then having some of the snacks. Having them there gave some substance to the whole event. It was easy to imagine them receiving the benefits of the day. Just before it was time to start the run, the plant manager got on stage, and announced the amount of money already raised by the sponsors and the participants of the event. It was over $20,000. That’s a lot of money, and I’m sure that the kids at the Boys & Girls Club of the Upstate will enjoy all the benefits the money will provide. At 10:15, the bikes started to roar, and the run was underway. The children were standing on the corner, waving and cheering as the bikers rode past. It was a very moving sight. It showed the real meaning of the run. It was fun, and fulfilling. I know that I will definitely go back again next year. Also, I’ll try to buy some of the Ace Bakery’s bread. If the event was any example of their management skills, their bread must be good too.

Florence 7 Benefit Ride A Success

Florence police officer Terrence Carroway died enroute to an area hospital. Officer Carroway had responded to the call of other officers’ need for assistance when he was caught in the line of fire. He had recently been awarded a pin commemorating 30 years in the public service arena. Five other officers were wounded and treated locally for their injuries. Florence County Sheriff’s deputy Farrah Turner died on October 21, in hospital, weeks after the shooting. Bravery is probably the most widely used term when describing our first responders. They run towards the dangerous situations while the vast majority of others are fleeing the scene. Bikers have seldom been known to back down from a fight, so it seems only natural that they would get behind any cause

benefitting the brave men and women that have taken the oath to serve and protect us. The local community as well as the nation was rocked by this heinous act of evil. In the days, weeks, and even months that have passed since the incident; so many individuals and businesses have shown support for the men and women in uniform. Black Jack Harley-Davidson got in on this show of solidarity by hosting an event/fundraiser that they called the: Florence 7 Benefit Ride. It took place on Saturday, November 24 with bikers from all over coming out to express their support and appreciation of the men and women in blue. The morning was rainy, but the weather soon cooperated. The sky cleared, and it actually became a great day for motors to rumble. The ride left from Black Jack HD and went to the Darlington Raceway which is about a fifteen mile trip. There was a silent auction along with live music performed by several bands. The group “Bad Water” played at Black Jack HD while three more acts put on a show for those that gathered at the “Lady in Black” (as the Darlington Raceway is affectionately known). The headliner at the track was “Outshine”. Other activities included a kids’ zone equipped with jump castles. There was a classic car as well as a custom bike show. And of course, no benefit event would be complete without food. Assistant Service Manager David Easler of Black Jack HD said that 2000 pounds of Boston butts, 60 gallons of chicken bog, and a couple hundred cans of green beans were on hand or in belly. There was even a big screen set up at the race track, so participants could watch the Clemson\Carolina game. The fellowship and comradery continued until the game ended. Easler also commented that approximately 200 bikes were accounted for and about $20,000 was raised with 100% of the money raised given in support of the “Florence 7” and their families. I don’t think anyone can argue the success of this benefit or the good it promoted. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support and sponsorship of Black Jack HD, the Raceway Grill, Bellamy’s Country Catering, Porkchop’s Tattoo Studio and many other contributors that I apologize to for not having the space to name. You know who you are, so thanks. Unfortunately, it was a tragic circumstance that brought about the “Florence 7 Benefit Ride” but it was truly amazing to witness our biker community (and others) come out in appreciation and pay tribute to the wounded, the fallen, and the law enforcement brotherhood as a whole. These men and women do not receive the public’s gratitude nearly as often as they should. Very few are willing to put on a badge, so let’s not take them for granted….Say Thank You!

21st Annual Brenner Children’s Hospital Toy Run By Buzz he Brenner Children’s Hospital is a family tradition at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. It’s been a yearly delight to watch this event and the participants reach out to the residents of Brenner Children’s Hospital in hopes that they could brighten their day. In comparison to last year’s 28 degrees with snow, this year’s ride temps, that topped out at 40 degrees, was a ride in the park and the riders responded in droves! It was an hour before ride time when we arrived, and the line of registered riders was already around the back of Riding High Harley-Davidson. Inside the dealership, the registration tables were buzzing, and the huge Christmas tree was surrounded by a mound of toys and stuffed animals. The customer lounge was also a popular place. A cup of hot coffee and a sausage biscuit was nice treat for those going on the ride. There were plenty of picture opportunities as so many of the riders were decked out in holiday cheer, even Santa was in attendance! Among the elves on the ride, Bob and Ginger Karney of Karney Law Firm showed up with hand warmers for the riders. Great idea, Thanks! As the time to ride approached, Mark Wheelihan of Riding High Harley-Davidson gathered everyone for a pre-ride chat. He thanked the multi jurisdiction motor patrol that was escorting the ride and thanked everyone for their continued support. A line then formed to carry the presents from the dealership to the van that would carry them to Brenner. It’s a great sight to see! As promised, the motor officers escorted us out of the parking lot and on to I-40. They did an amazing job blocking off the entrance ramps and we were the only vehicles on west bound side of the interstate! When we got to Brenner Children’s Hospital, we made a loop down through the horseshoe drive that is in front of the entry way that was marked with a hand painted “Thank You” sign. Once parked, we all made our way inside the lobby area of the hospital where we were greeted with cookies and hot chocolate. This was a real treat for our cold hands and our sweet tooth! Again, Mark Wheelihan gathered us to make the presentation and award Brenner Children’s Hospital with a whopping $22,500 and a shoe box full of gift cards. You see, Brenner Children’s Hospital not only provides gifts for the kids who are admitted there, but use the gift cards to treat the families who are visiting loved ones in the hospital over the

holidays. After a thunderous round of applause, we all went out and grabbed some gifts and took them into the gift stock room in the hospital. It would warm even the coldest heart to see the shelves of presents and to know that you were helping provide some joy to kids who are truly in need. We all broke up and went our separate ways, but the warmth of the experience stuck with us. A huge thank you to Riding High Harley-Davidson, the dozens of event sponsors, and the hundreds of riders that showed up to join in the revelry. I look forward to doing it again next year.

and women have paid the ultimate price for “Lady Liberty”. As you read this, don’t forget those serving now as well as many others that are struggling to find normalcy that they once knew. That’s why it’s important for events like “Honoring Our Veterans: Past and Present” put on by Lutheran Men in Mission to take place as often as possible. The event was held in Florence, SC on Sat. Nov. 17 and was the third one the group has organized. It’s important for the public to support these celebrations of our service men and women. In today’s political climate where opinions are strong; it’s refreshing to find common ground to bring folks together. In this case, it was the love and appreciation of cars and motorcycles. Although there weren’t many bikes present, car lovers were out in full force. The Eastern South Carolina Mustang Club or ESCMC made their presence known. Charles Johnson, a member of the ESCMC as well as one of the “men in mission” said that they’ll do anything to help vets. He and many other members are veterans themselves. All money raised from the event goes to help veterans find jobs, get into homes, and help returning service men and women get back onto their feet. “It’s a hand up, not a hand out,” Johnson said. Other attendees that share the same sentiment as the ESCMC were Ed LeBlanc and his wife Mickey. They made the trip from Mullins, SC with their 1969 Jeep painted like an Army replica. It’s the first show the vehicle dubbed “the Military Honor Jeep” has been in. The couple said that they just wanted to come up with a way to give back to those that have given so much more. They accept donations big and small. Fifty dollars or more will get a person, business, or company’s name displayed on the “honor board” set up in front of the jeep.

At the end of a set period of time the, the signatures are counted and each one brings about .10 cents (maybe a little more). One hundred percent of all money raised goes to a charity benefitting veterans. Proceeds received from the LeBlanc’s efforts at this event will go to helping homeless vets. LeBlanc also said that “the Military Honor Jeep” is happy to attend any event within one hundred miles of its home on a first come first serve basis. Shane Kreuzer was the lone biker at this happening. He made the brisk ride down Hwy. 76 from Sumter, SC on his black, chromed out, very clean Indian. He did not show up to enter his bike into the show but after realizing that his was the only one in the lot…….he jokingly said that had he known that, he would have entered. Although it would have been good to check out more bikes; I was stoked to be able to cover this car show. The passion surrounding the old as well as new metal was undeniable and contagious, matched only by the love and support of those this event was meant to celebrate: OUR VETERANS.

Chief’s Final Ride

By: Johnny Reb e lost a great man 12 November 2018. The man who built an MC club from nothing, and took it to a multi chapter, multi state club. James ‘’Chief’’ Moody was a biker. A real biker, not a weekend warrior dressed in new leathers, but an honest to God old school biker. Chief as he was known by his Ghost Riders MC brothers, was larger than life. He started the Ghost Riders MC in 1971 after buying a new Triumph motorcycle. He had a 1947 Indian before that and that is how he got the road name Chief, that stayed with him the rest of his life. Well, Chief loved riding but wanted a couple of bros to ride with and party with. So he asked a couple of the guys that serviced his Trumpet, and the rest as they say is history, the Ghost Riders MC was born! Members came and went, but not Chief. He stayed and built it up to the club that it is today. He was always at the national club meetings, and he always had a crowd around him. Younger guys wanting advice or just asking him about the old days. Chief always made time for them. He loved being around his old friends, and loved meeting the new club brothers. I saw Chief for the last time back in September at a national meet, as usual there was a large crowd of bros wanting a bit of time with him. He was having a great time watching the games and admiring the bikes. He espe-

cially liked Hardrock’s stripped down Dyna. The one thing that Chief wanted done when he passed was to have one final ride through Johnson City, Tenn. So, on 24 Nov 2018 Chief and many of his Ghost Rider brothers got on their scoots and took their brother for his final putt. They were not alone though, Chief had brothers from as far away as Michigan and Illinois that came to see him off and give him a righteous escort. They wound through the streets of Johnson City, and headed to Avery Co. Ghost Riders clubhouse. It was a cold and cloudy day, kind of fitting. Chief, you will be missed. However, the club that you started and help grow is alive and well, so in a way you will always live on. Every time a Ghost Rider puts on that cut and swings a leg over his bike, I know that your spirit is with your brother. Yes sir, you will be missed, but you will also be celebrated every time a couple of bros are having a cold one, you can bet it will be…”hey brother remember when Chief did”… fill in the blanks as you will. The Ole Breeze Tavern

By: Johnny Reb here is an old Irish proverb that says, “A stranger is just a friend you haven’t met”. This wise statement could have been written about Full Throttle’s newest advertiser, The Ole Breeze Nightclub and Tavern. The owner and operator Cheryl, is a young lady who knows what her customers want. A place where you can hang out with good people, have a cold beer and really have a good time. This is not just a biker friendly bar, this is a biker welcoming bar. The staff is awesome, bartenders Donna, Tonya and Carolee were so friendly and made sure that your beer was always full. Cheryl has made sure that when you walk in that you are welcomed and made to feel like you have been coming there for years. Sassy and I decided to go out on December 8th, which happened to be a birthday celebration for Cheryl. We walked in and the place was just a jumping! DJ Harley was cranking out some awesome tunes! Everything from Southern rock to contemporary dance music. Something for everyone to enjoy, and brother, we’re they enjoying it! I’ve been to many of these places, but I have never seen so many people having such a good time, dancing and partying with no attitudes or drama. There were bikers there to celebrate Cheryl’s birthday, independents and MC’s alike. The Dixie Devils MC were there and their wives and girlfriends. Dixie Devil member Hucklebuck tracked me down outside and dragged me inside saying, “brother you have got to hear my wife sing”, all I can say is, Tammy, you have a gift from God darlin’. The voice that come out of that girl was just unbelievable! Oh, and next time, let’s hear you bang those drums Hucklebuck! Also celebrating was the Dragon Slayers MC from Wilson Co. It’s always great seeing those brothers. Also look forward to an upcoming story next month with a charity event and poker run that the Dragon Slayers MC are putting on to help a disabled veteran get to the National Winter Sports for Disabled Veterans. Well, before I close this out, you have got to get yourself out to Elm City and The Ole Breeze. Easy to find right on Rt. 301. Parking for your scoots in front, and cage parking in the back. Believe me folks, this is just the first of many more stories to come about this awesome place. By: Ed Cleary f you’re like me, you spare no expense for your bike and riding gear. Tires, fluids, helmets and jackets, nothing is too good. My only exception to this rule has been eyewear. Steele Angels 15th Annual Toy Run

By: Wendy Rogers t was another great toy run for the Steele Angels. The weather could not have been any better! It’s funny how in just about all the articles you read, they always mention the weather. Well you know as a biker, that is a major factor when you plan on riding for the day. There are so many events that go on every weekend in this Fayetteville area, and I think a lot of the turnout for the events has a lot to do with the weather. This toy run started registration at 12 noon at Legend’s Pub on Bragg Blvd, and was totally escorted by the Fayetteville Police department to the Dog House on Owen Dr. That’s where food was served. The Dog House had prepared a turkey dinner with corn, green bean casserole, rolls, and stuffing that was getting everyone ready for Thanksgiving! Everyone enjoyed the food, it was delicious! They had a 50/50 drawing and then proceeded on with all the fantastic door prizes. It was another successful event and the Steele Angels can’t thank all their participants enough. It is an honor to be able to have these events and people come together for a good time and an even greater cause. and with the great help of all the participants there is so much work being done to help and provide for many children in this area. Bikers have and are known to have the biggest hearts. They pull together and make things happen. There will be several families to be adopted this year. After all the families are taken care of the remaining toys and donations will be directed to the Department of Social Services. As the number of foster children continues to grow, this toy run will help take care of those that are awaiting to be adopted into their new family in the future. Lions Club And Motorcycles Making A Difference By: Chad Cox otorcycle enthusiasts on a mission of good will took over Florence, SC on Dec. 2, just before the Christmas holiday. The ride or “toy run” as it is commonly referred to was sponsored by the Florence Area Lions Club and was the 35th of its kind. The event was founded by Doug Gwynn and Sandy Broach, who were the owners of Doug’s Harley-Davidson once upon a time in Florence. They were honored at this event in response to their efforts over the years. Previous toy runs have included several hundred bikes and this year was no different, despite the weather not wanting to co-operate. Participants gathered at the Florence Center and got rolling around 2:00. The ride becomes a parade of sorts as the bikes motor through Florence for about ten minutes. The city is practically brought to a halt (in a good way) as the bikers and their machines make the short journey to the Eastern Carolina Fairgrounds. Santa Claus has made the ride in past years and Mrs. Claus joined her “husband” and the rest of the pack for this event. Once the riders reached the fairgrounds, they were greeted with music, food, and an auction. There were even some door prizes handed out. Motorcyclists that decided to participate gave a $20.00 donation or presented a toy of equal or greater value. Money raised because of the Lion’s Club efforts as well as the participant’s willingness to give goes towards the purchase of toys for children in need. Funds raised also help kids receive eye and ear exams. The toy run is the main fundraiser coordinated by the Lion’s Club each year; however, some of the proceeds go towards the groups’ “Good Fellows” event which is also held in December. The holidays, to most, are thought of as a joyous, festive, and magical time. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and then forget that there are far too many families struggling to make ends meet or just provide the bare necessities. Wishes and wants do not seem to be attainable for these folks facing hard times. The Lion’s Club has not forgotten that there are people in need and this group of men has not lost sight of the true meaning of Christmas. God bless them

26th Annual Brunswick County Toy Run By David Burnette aturday December 8, 2018, the 26th Annual Brunswick County Classic Car and Motorcycle Toy Run went on as planned despite the cold and wet weather. There were a few bikes and some classic cars out, but there were plenty of bikers and car club guys along with their friends and families there to support the needy and kids of Brunswick County and make sure they had a great Christmas. We met at Brunswick Island Baptist Church for lunch where there were door prizes, an auction, 50/50 drawing and oldest toy run shirt contest. Mike Carter won the shirt contest with one from the very first run in 1992. Mike has been to every toy run but one since the beginning. I heard the very first run there were 100 bikers that rode 100 miles in 26-degree weather to take 10 kids shopping. The 50/50 winner won $332 he didn’t want to be named, and

I think he was trying to keep it a secret from the wife, (LoL). The auction raised about $700. We left the church on a police escorted ride (big thanks to the Brunswick County Sheriff department for the escort) to the Walmart in Southport where all the kids were beginning to line up. There was quite a bit of excitement in the air. Just before the shopping began, they had the drawing for the golf cart / trailer combo that they had been selling tickets for all year. A lady named Gina won it. You should have seen it. It looked like a 65 Ford Mustang. Very cool. Then on to the shopping, the last count I heard there were about 140 under privileged kids that were signed up to go shopping. Not sure who was more excited the kids or the volunteers there to help them shop. on other things like toys and such. It was a lot of fun. Each family had an escort to help keep up with how they spent their money. That turned out to be a job, the family I got had 5 kids to shop for. WOW! I’m glad all my kids are grown and on their own!). So far that’s $17,500 spent and there’s usually a few last-minute kids that get signed up. I personally want to thank Jerome Munna and family and those at The Sign Shop for putting all this together every year. They put a lot of work into this. Jerome said God has blessed him in his business and personal life since he moved to Brunswick County to start a new chapter in his life. He said he felt like he needed to give something back to the community that has been so good to him. Jerome said he knew that he couldn’t do this all by himself so he wanted to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, and anyone who has helped put this together. He especially wanted to thank the Tri-Beach Cruisers and the Cape Fear Cruisers car clubs that between them raised $14,000 for the cause. Great job guys, that’s pretty awesome!!! Confederate Riders Motorcycle Club Honors Bladen’s Heroes By Trisha Photo Chi Force he Confederate Riders of Bladen County honored the White Lake Fire Department, Police Department, emergency workers and volunteers for their dedication during the direct aftermath of Hurricane Florence. On Monday, October 15th, 2018; the CRMC Bladen Chapter presented these protectors and peacekeepers an honorable certificate of appreciation for their bravery and dedication. The ceremony was scheduled in conjunction with the local meeting. CRMC wanted to take this time to recognize and honor the endless efforts of these men and women. They deserve to be acknowledged for all they have done. The lives they saved right down the road from the station. The MC stated the major goal was to call out our local Hometown Heroes. “These are heroes that we saw in action.” The lives and safety of others was their mission…. Accomplished! There were so many stories of those emergency workers, volunteers, law enforcement and Fire Department personnel that risked their own safety to protect those who had succumbed to the effects of Hurricane Florence in Bladen County. These Hometown Heroes used their time and, in many cases, their own personal equipment to assist in locating as well as

rescuing people from their homes and vehicles. It is incredible the number of people that were assisted; and in many cases rescued in this county. The Confederate Riders Motorcycle Club, Bladen Chapter, took this opportunity to honor the heroes and to extend a hand to them as well. They expressed their immense gratitude for the service these men and women extend to the community each and every day. As well as commend them for their great and grand service to the people of the community during and after Hurricane Florence. Thank you!

Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson Toys For Tots Ride By: Ed Cleary or over twenty years the Raleigh Harley Owners Group and their sponsoring dealership, now Tobacco Road HarleyDavidson, have worked with the U.S. Marine Corps on their Toys-For-Tots mission. This year’s annual toy run was held on Saturday, December 1. Led by a U.S.M.C. 5-ton 6x6 truck packed full of toys, over 60 bikes departed from Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson for the short ride over to Knightdale. The ride had one stop to make on its way out to Knightdale, the Vietnam Veterans memorial at the State Capital Building on East Edenton Street. Here, on the first Saturday of each month, the American Legion, Durham Post 7, conducts a reading of the names ceremony. With honor guard posted, the names of all 37 North Carolinians still Missing in Action from the Vietnam War are read aloud. Also present at the memorial was the POW/MIA table. The POW/MIA table is very small with a setting for one, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his or

her oppressors. The ceremony concluded with a wreath laying presented by Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson. Like most well run events it’s easy to overlook all the hard work and effort that went into planning and executing this ride. In addition to the truck load of toys and cash that was donated to the Toys-For-Tots mission, the Raleigh H.O.G. Group also donated over 60 refurbished bicycles to the Marines for distribution. Throughout the year, they worked with a local Wal-Mart store to collected and repair bicycles which had been returned to the store for various reasons. They also donated another dozen bikes to the Raleigh Police Department for distribution through their summer youth projects. Over the last five years they have donated somewhere between 450 and 500 bicycles through these programs. Thanks to the escort provided by Wake County Sheriff’s Department, we made quick time to the Lone Star steakhouse parking lot in Knightdale, our destination. This was a rain or shine event and the rain held off just long enough for us to eat a quick bowl of hot chili, graciously provided by Lone Star. Despite the cold ride home in the rain I feel privileged to be able to participate in this event. Tobacco Road did a great job staging the ride, the POW/MIA ceremony was very moving and the chili was great. As always, a special thank you to the men and women of our Armed Forces and our First Responders for their assistance in making this a safe and successful ride.

Tilley H-D Welcomes Santa Story and photo by Alan Dockery ormally, you might get to hang out with NASCAR stars at Tilley Harley-Davidson, Statesville, NC. But the middle of December, I stopped by and Santa Claus and The Grinch were there picking up some presents for good bikers. While there, they took a few hours to talk with local children about what they want for Christmas. The kids were thrilled to see Santa and most of them loved The Grinch too. After telling their Christmas wishes and getting some candy, they walked around the dealership shopping with their parents. Some of the kids showed me their favorites of the motorcycles for sale that day and took a turn on the electric Rockin’ Harley. The holidays may be over, but Tilley H-D is a great place to shop for yourself or gifts any time of the year.

The snow was almost gone, and clear sunny skies made for a nice afternoon to ride out to the country.

We all know that bikers have some of the most underestimated generosity there is. That’s what makes this story so great. On December 16th, the Maniax RC hosted two families for a full Christmas dinner and presents, with every item on their Christmas wish lists. The day began with a full Christmas dinner with turkey, ham and any fixing or desert you could ask for. Shortly after dinner the kids gathered around the tree to learn the history of Christmas. While they all listened to the story there was only one sound that could be heard. A lone Harley was pulling in and to all of their surprise Saint Nick had come rolling in. After all the kids had a chance to sit on Santa’s lap (and even some adults) the presents from Santa were handed out. Every family had been hand-picked by members of the club. The Maniax reached out for wish lists, and every single item that any of the kids had asked for was under that tree waiting for them when they arrived. The pure joy on their faces showed every person in attendance why we all do, what we do. The rest of the day was spent with the kids playing on the motorcycles, riding their new toys in the parking lot and the adults rejoicing in the holiday spirit. These are the moments that we all look forward to every year, these are the moments where we get to show our community what family means to us. We got to spend the day with our wonderful friends of the Immortalz MC, and the Rolling Saints RC and we got to spend it giving back to our community. “We may not have it all

The 12th Annual Barry Glenn “Old Dog” Toys For Tots

By Rose and Lloyd he 12th Annual Barry Glenn “Old Dog” Toys for Tots was scheduled for Dec 2nd at Double D Burn out Saloon. Due to expected bad weather, the rain date was Sunday the 8th. The weather still wasn’t great , but the bikers came anyway. The parking lot was full with bikes and cages. For many, this is the only toy ride they participate in. Without a doubt they are there every year. I believe there is a few factors in this, first it is a memorial ride for all the hard work Barry Glenn did at JR’s Corner Tavern for this ride. Second, it is sponsored by Marines like Dustin Lee that put their heart and soul in getting Christmas to so many children that otherwise would have no Christmas. Third there is David and Missi Thompson that put their soul into this toy drive every year. The day began with David paying tribute to all bikers that were there with hearts opened. Then a beautiful memorial to Barry Glenn and Mama Kris. Tim Gulledge, gave an overall of days’

events. Tony “Mad Dog” King said a wonderful prayer asking for all bikers to return safely. The ride then left Double D with Party bus in tow to JR’s Corner Tavern, then on to the VFW and The Old Watering Hole, and then back to Double D Burn Out Saloon for a great day of socializing. Evin and crew grilled some wonderful chicken, and there was potato salad, baked beans and rolls to go with it. The run participants were entertained by a fabulous band “Third Shift”. Remember Evin and the band donate their time and services for the cause. There was dice roll, won by Laura Logan, who gave the winnings back in Barry’s name. There was 50/50, raffle and auction, with the proceeds going to Toys For Tots who uses the cash to purchase more toys for the kids. The day was great, everyone was safe with hearts filled with love to help these children.

Tilley Christmas Party

By: Grant he weather outside is frightful, so the song goes. But The weather inside was delightful. So on and so on. Well, it was the day before Snowmegeddon. Or whatever the hell they called it! Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury had a store-wide Christmas sale with Santa in attendance and they had snacks and drinks on hand. Lots of sales though out the store and lots of new bikes have arrived for 2019. My friends in service said to pass on now is not too early to get ready for Daytona and beat the lines for service. Santa made the kiddos laugh and walked around talking with everyone making sure he knew what we wanted in our stockings. Hot cocoa and cider was accompanied by Christmas cookies which made the Christmas fun even more popular with all. As the sale was going on, the local

Salisbury HOG chapter prepared for their party next door in the HOG room. Which I heard was a great party Saturday night... Who am I kidding, I was there and awoke with a headache on Sunday. Ha Ha. Shriner’s Hospital For Children Chicken Stew Competition

By Caroline he local motorcycle community has been a friend to Shriners over the years and showed it by participating in a Chicken Stew Competition last November 17th. There was no better place to display the area’s best chefs than Smokin’ HarleyDavidson. Eight competitors were on hand to entice folks to taste and vote on their culinary masterpieces. But honestly, I have never had any chicken stew that was not good. Promptly, at 2pm, General Manager, Ray Perry, and Brother Bill Dotson prepared to announce the winner—big congratulations to the Judges’ choice of the Mystic Shrine Club and the People’s choice winner, Mike Jones! Also, ‘107.5 Manup’, was a sponsor of this event. After the winners were announced, their van suddenly pulled up and announced they had 105 turkeys to give away! Everyone, that came out to this

Now it’s time to think about the New Year, what are your intentions? Many will make a lot of New Year’s Resolutions, some will be kept, and some won’t. How many will make a promise to God? Some, the only time they talk to God is when they get in a bind or need something, then we tend to ask Him for help. Then everything passes, and we forget about Him until we get in a bind again. God doesn’t want you to make a promise or resolution to Him about going to church or living better. God wants you to show Him that you mean what you say. He wants all of you. God is a jealous God, He wants all not just part. God wants you to show Him you want to give your whole life to Him completely and live for Him. One promise that you will find true and won’t have to worry about is His promise to us. 1John 2:25 “And this is the promise that He has promised us: eternal life”. If you want this promise all you have to is, ask God into your heart and to forgive you of your sins and to live by Gods way. How about starting the New Year out right on a good promise?

19th Annual Rutherford County Toy Run

By Wally Wersching n Sunday, November 18th, I rode to the Toy Cruise-In in Chesnee, SC, and afterward I rode north to attend the Rutherford County Toy Run in Forest City, NC. I left Chesnee at about 1:30, and followed Rte. 221 all the way to Rte. 74. It was a very pleasant trip – Rte. 221 is four-lane most of the way. The weather was perfect with great scenery. I headed toward Forest City, and exited onto Rte. 74A. The toy run started near Spindale, NC in the old Kmart parking lot behind Denny’s, and rode with a police escort through Rutherfordton, Spindale, and Forest City before ending at the National Guard Armory at 890 Withrow Road (which is almost right behind the old Kmart parking lot). Former Rutherford County Moose Lodge members along with the Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) were responsible for the run to collect toys for area children so they have a pleasant Christmas. I arrived a little before 2:00PM, and parked in front. Last year I got boxed in so this year, I parked in front. I knew that they started the run at 1:30 so I’d catch them on the end of the run – the ride into the armory. I walked inside to put a stack of Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines on the table, and talked with a few friends. I watched as “Pegleg” filled the large containers of soup. They had potato soup, and vegetable soup, plus corn bread, crackers, and tea. It was a great menu after a chilly motorcycle ride and warmed everybody up. There was a table full of door prizes, and another table full of cups of sweet tea ready to serve the thirsty riders as they arrived. I walked outside to see a member of the Windjammers standing next to his bike. It seems that the lids of one of his saddlebags blew off during the run. He gave it to another rider and then rode ahead. I’ve heard of many of the older saddlebag lids falling off. The new ones are designed better. I heard the rumble of motorcycles in the distance, and then the sharp sound of the police car’s sirens. The run was coming in. As I stood taking pictures, I noticed a lot of friends ride by – some waved, others didn’t even see me. They were concerned about where to park their bikes. The ride into the parking lot became a little chaotic at times. 211 bikes were in the run this year. I saw Santa ride in. One of the Gargoyles MC dressed in a Santa suit for the event. I’m sure that all the children in attendance were happy that he was there. Then I saw Mike from Full Throttle Biker Church ride in. He waved as he passed. That was the last time I saw either Santa or Mike. I walked up and down the long line looking for them, and couldn’t find them. They must have gotten into the armory quickly before the line formed. After the bikes parked in the armory lot, the bikers lined up to take their toys into the armory, and enjoy some of the free food. Bikers formed a long line that wound around before it went into the armory. I talked a few friends as they passed going into the armory. Everybody had smiles on their faces

because they knew that they were going to make some young child happy on Christmas morning. I left a little before 3:00. It was a full afternoon of people giving to the children in need. We were all glad that the weather cooperated. The children will have a lot of toys this Christmas.

His Laboring Few Biker Ministry Toy Run By David Burnette n December 1, 2018, His Laboring Few Biker Ministry held their 25th annual toy run. As usual, at least the last few years, the weather was cold and wet but still a few die-hard bikers showed up for the short ride from Preacher Steve’s Leathers over on highway 29/70 in Thomasville to His Laboring Few Biker Ministry building on MLK Drive in Thomasville where there was a warm meal waiting for them. I think there was about 8 bikes show up and several cars. Around 35 people in all showed up and brought toys for the kids. There were door prizes, a 50/50 and an auction as well. There were enough door prizes so that everyone got a prize. Then there was an auction with several T shirts and hats from Bens V Twins, Tilley HarleyDavidson, Iron Horse Motorcycle, and The Carolinas’ Full

Throttle Magazine. Amanda Coe donated some art work, an Amsoil oil change was donated from Huff Oil, jewelry from Keith Wrenn at Wrenn’s Sterling and some other great stuff. If I forgot to mention your name, I’m sorry but we are grateful for your donations. Joe House won the 50/50 and his cut was about $35, which he donated back. I think we raised about $450 there with all the donations and auction. After leaving Thomasville, a few hours later some of us went up to Greensboro to a craft beer place called Joymongers where they had been collecting toys and money for Dorrie’s Toy Drive. Dorrie always gives everything she collects to His Laboring Few for their outreach. Dorrie is the wife of John Hill who owns Select Cycles in Greensboro. John is also a member of the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society. They always have some great music lined up for the event. This year, Appaloosa Redd was performing, of course it was awesome as usual. I believe that they raised around $600 and there was a van completely full of toys that were collected over the 2 weeks prior to the event. I would like to thank everyone who had a part in this. I’m sure a lot of people don’t know, but His Laboring Few has been doing this since 1993. How it works is, families that need the help start registering their kids a couple months prior to Christmas. They are required to provide documentation for each child before getting help. HLF then invites the parents to the ministry building about a week before Christmas and give the gifts to the parents to give to their children. That way, the children think their parents got the gifts. His Laboring Few doesn’t want any credit for the gifts, they would rather help build up the family relationships instead. Another outreach His Laboring Few does every year is a free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner for the needy and shut in’s in the area. They even send food for the veterans and visiting family down to the VA in Salisbury. I believe preacher Steve told me they deliver around 1200 meals at Thanksgiving and almost as many at Christmas. Also, they feed the needy all year long. Having said that, His Laboring Few is always in need of help preparing and delivering meals. 28th Annual Conover School Toy Run

Story and Photo by Alan Dockery chilly rain couldn’t keep Hickory Bikers home the first Saturday in December as folks rode and drove to the Wizard Saloon for the 28th Annual Toy Run to benefit the Conover School. Some hardy bikers geared up and rode, but I saw lots of folks drive up so they could be there to donate and support the kids. Even if not riding nor going to the school, local bikers wanted to be sure to get a T-shirt and enter the raffles. This toy run supports the Conover School, one of the state’s premier special education schools. What makes it different from other toy runs is instead of bringing toys to a central collection point, teachers select specific toys based on each child’s wants, needs and abilities. Bikers pay the tab through a charity managed by Mike. This

year, Hickory area bikers raised more than $30,000 to ensure the toy run succeeds for years to come. Just after noon, Arnold Kerley on his beautiful custom trike towing Santa (Wesley Moore) lead the way. About a hundred bikes followed and thrilled the kids as they rolled in to the school. This is a unique toy run and the coolest by far that I’ve been on in my many years riding. On the Conover School Toy Run, bikers see the kids they are helping. As we rode into the Newton-Conover High School parking lot some of the cheering kids and families lined the sidewalk under umbrellas. Folks gathered in the gym to see a great part of this toy run. What makes it so special for the kids, their families and the bikers is what the kids give back to us, a heart-warming Christmas Show. School show their appreciation by putting on a Christmas pageant, singing and acting out songs of the season. This is such a touching show that even the most macho bikers could be seen wiping an occasional tear. This year’s show had a real rocking theme with some great songs and skits. I love how they end the show now by inviting the bikers to join the students for a last song and dance. The Christmas trees were decorated with ornaments made by the students for the bikers to take home. Most of the riders returned to the Wizard Saloon for some potato soup and sandwiches. Then Mike and his staff gave away a bunch of cool door prizes and auctioned some nice items. Mike Dyson, Wizard Saloon owner, has organized this toy run for 28 years. This is why I nominated Mike for, and he won the Karney Law Firm’s 2018 Bulldog Hero Award. “It’s an honor for me to do this for the children. They deal with struggles every day. We just had issues one day. I wish everyone could feel the joy that I feel from the toy run. That way the kids would never need anything for the rest of their lives,” Mike said. “God bless the Toy Run Crew who helps make this happen. They devote their time and hearts for this cause, and we love and appreciate everyone.”

15th Annual Arzie Rogers Toy Run

By Lloyd n November of 2006 I purchased a brand new 2007 Heritage Softail from Speedway Harley-Davidson. My brother and my sister-in-law combined had purchased about 5 Harleys. Right after purchasing my Heritage, I went on my first Toy Ride, with the Speedway H.O.G. Chapter Rose and I have been on every ride since, missing only one, which was canceled due to weather. I was a member of the Speedway H.O.G. Chapter for a while and enjoyed many Sunday rides to different places of interest. Even after moving to High Point, we would still tag up with The Chapter, whenever they were nearby. So, as you can imagine Speedway Harley-Davidson holds a special place in my heart. On November 17th, we attended the 15th Annual Arzie Rogers Toy Run. We thought about the time when the name of the event was changed in honor of the late Mrs. Rogers, which

After meeting and forming up at CMC- Northeast Stadium (Intimidators Stadium) which by the way is a fantastic place to start out with plenty of room and great parking and the tunes from DJ Todd filling the air. everyone’s help and donations, over 539 families were helped to have a joyful Christmas. We enjoyed a pleasant ride through the country never putting our feet down till our arrival back at Speedway HarleyDavidson. Uptown Catering Co, owned by Mike Ingersol and his crew had all the fixings laid out. Believe me nobody left hungry. Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer, had his van there. Bob, along with his associate Attorney Sean Clayton, and Paralegal Brandi Morris were on hand to greet and meet and give out calendars and gift bags. As the music continued and people finished up their meals, the toys that surrounded the Christmas tree were loaded into the waiting vans. There were two YMCA vans stocked to the top with toys. What a true blessing to see. The director of Administrations and The Empty Stocking Fund, Debbie Owens, was over joyed. All monetary donations go to the Cooperate Christian Fund to their Fuel Fund, helping those in need have heat through the winter. There was a lot of activity going on: raffles, sales, new bike rides, but the best part is, when we participate on this ride every year, it in a way is going home. We see friends and family that we only see on this ride once a year. We get to catch up and enjoy stories of their year and riding time. No matter the cold, we suit up every year, even in 24-degree weather one year. This ride is one of my, now our passions, and the day no matter how cold, brings us home with a warm heart. Always a huge thank you to everyone that works so hard to put this together, but without you the bikers opening your hearts every year, this would not be possible. Nazareth 2018 Christmas Party / Toy Run By: Darby Dillard 2-8-18 was a day with winter weather approaching. Do we ride? Or do we drive. We chose to ride! And as it turned out, it was a good choice. We departed Speedway H-D at 12:00, escorted by the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Department and headed to Bostian Heights Volunteer Fire Department and rendezvoused with a couple of more riders. Then off to Nazareth we rode. We had our most successful party, in the 10 years that my wife Betty and I have been involved. You missed it? You missed a very good ride and party. We only had 15 bikes, BUT!!!! We had two car clubs pick up the

slack. My riding associates need to step up their game. Queen City Challengers and Power Fanatic Mustang Club of Monroe stepped up to the plate big time with around 25-30 cars total. We also had a friend of my daughter, my daughter’s softball team, Swarm Shank 8 & Under and parents, and the Cabarrus County Youth Queens and their parents. My point being...we’re grateful for all. This started as a pure toy run, but with attendance dropping in the past, we’re very grateful to all that stepped up this year! So, come on riders. Let’s step it up in 2019. There was many residents, volunteers and participants when we arrived. Some estimates were 400 total? After the greeting, we were served a traditional meal with ham and turkey provided by Uptown Catering of Charlotte and all the trimmings were prepared by numerous volunteers. A room full of deserts too, prepared by the “Rockwell Gang”. ‘Raising Glory’ played some beautiful Christmas music with a Bluegrass flavor and Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance to hand out some treats and present the residents their gifts. We were also able to provide comforter sets and pillows to all the residents, thanks to the generosity of many. We finished the party with our traditional rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas. It’s more like a shouting match, but a lot of fun. Even though we got a little damp after the party, we were about halfway home, in Concord, with the temperature at 42 degrees. It was well worth the effort. We are going to try to move to the YMCA across the road for next year so we’ll have more room. I’d like to thank these groups for their continued effort: Speedway H-D, Full Throttle Magazine and Bob Karney, for advertisement, Law Petroleum, William Douglas Management, Ladies at Burn Workout, Smiley’s of Rockwell, M&M Landscaping, Alternative Machine, Hair Artistry, Dent-BGone, The “Metrolina Gang”, and A-1 Petroleum, J-Bird’s Custom Cycles and Nothing to Lose Motorcycle Shop. 36th Annual Fayetteville Toy Run By: Trisha n December 1, 2018, the Wingmen Motorcycle Club joined the Fayetteville Urban Ministry in their annual toy run. A thirty-six-year tradition to date! The party began at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson. Everyone met up, some brought their unwrapped toys there and the Wingmen were set up and ready. There were toys for all ages. In the few minutes that I was there talking with Mark, one of the Wingmen; I saw every kind of toy you could think of! It went from swinging gorillas, to flying drones and then to riding motorcycles! The riding began and everyone including, Santa and Ms. Claus, jumped on their bikes and headed for The Dog House. The ride in was a great success. The bikes just kept rolling in one after another and all with many more toys for our community’s boys and girls! Everyone had a jolly ole time! And, the bus that was parked in The Dog House parking lot was filled with gifts for a Christmas success. Everyone that took part in this ride was so excited about the blessing of giving! It was an honor to be there to enjoy and give to such a wonderful cause. While talking with Mark and other Wingmen at the event sites, I found out a little about the history of the toy run and how the Wingmen Motorcycle Club came to be the defenders of this cause. As it was told, the Wingmen Motorcycle Club

knew they wanted to do something to help. This is a worthy and honorable cause. Everyone is always happy to rally around this community event. We are so thankful because we have the support of all MC’s and we work together to support the community. We all work together to support each other. And, that is what brotherhood is all about! Really the entire motorcycle community pairs up with Fayetteville Urban Ministry to make, this event happen each year and it just keeps getting larger and larger! This is the reason that it is as big as it is today. We are thankful that we can be a part of a local charity. We look forward to brotherhood and fellowship, and we always have a great time at this celebration of giving. It’s all about the kids and the hard work of Fayetteville Urban Ministry. We just look forward to being the helping hand in this event each year! It was such a great day to celebrate giving. The clouds and rain were there throughout the day but the spirit of all these bikers, with their heart of Christmas gold, outshined them all! The Wingmen Motorcycle Club looks forward to seeing everyone at their upcoming events and certainly right back here, in the heart of Fayetteville, next year, for the 37th annual toy run!

Ghost Riders Help The Children Fund

My point of contact for this event was Torch, the VP of Nash County Ghost Riders MC chapter. He told me that this started as a chance for his chapter to help a young girl in Nash county, and evolved into the Ghost Riders Nation helping three young kids with medical problems Sassy and I left the house the morning of 17 November, and headed to Farmville to meet up with Fast Eddie, the chapter P of Edgecombe County Ghost Riders MC. We followed him to Nash County’s clubhouse, where they were setting up the food and refreshments. Torch said that his chapter P, Kentucky, was leading the poker run and they would be returning soon. While Sassy, and Mama Pat sat at the bar and partook of the adult refreshments, I went out and talked to some of the members of the Ghost Riders. They were extremely proud to have raised this money to help these young kids. Cards used to be handed out by an MC that we all know, it used to read, “They all know when we do wrong, nobody remembers when we do right”, or words to that effect. It still rings true today, if the average citizen that watches TV and believes everything that they hear, knew the truth of how much good bikers do for people, they might not look at us like they do.

Getting off my soapbox now and getting back to the story. The Ghost Riders MC had help in raising this money from other people also. They wanted me to include these folks, and thank them for making this all possible. First, the first prize winner of the raffle, Chip Hill, and the second prize winner who works at Sundown’s Sports Bar donated their winnings back to the kids. The poker run winner, a brother who goes by Rickets, donated his winnings back also. The poker run stops, who also sold raffle tickets were, Dixie Steel MC, Tippetts Mill, and Gators. In the end, Sadie Dodson’s family, Zachery Blaze Davis’ family, and Dustin Hill’s family all received $1140.00 each. These families were so happy to know that there are people who care about them and they really needed this help. I was going to list these young children’s medical problems but, and I’m not exaggerating, the list is just so long and heartbreaking that suffice it to say, this help went to some very deserving people. That’s what it’s all about folks, really. I hope I included everyone that I was supposed to mention, and I hope that I did justice to this story in trying to write it down for y’all. Before I close this out, I want to give a shout out to the Ghost Riders ladies who put together the great food and to those members standing outside freezing their collective asses off cooking burgers for all of us!
