o it’s January. the traditional rebirth of our 12 month calendar and time for everyone to make a 25 day attempt on a yearlong resolution. Every year for as long as I can remember our official New Year’s Resolution was to ride more and even though we don’t exactly add up our mileage each year, it always feels like we achieve that goal. There is always a ton of events going on in the Carolinas and it’s our pleasure to list them in the Cruisin’ Calendar each month and attempt to get to all of them! The Cruisin’ Calendar is FREE for charity motorcycle events, club events and our advertisers, so feel free to shoot us a line and get your event in the magazine. This year, 2023, also brings The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine to a huge milestone. It’s our 25th year in print. TWENTY FIVE YEARS….man, a lot has changed in the motorcycle world since 1998, but The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine has remained steady for 294 months bringing you the best events calendar, biker friendly businesses, biker news and event coverage. August is our official birth month, so be on the lookout for a 25th Anniversary Celebration. There’s a lot going on before we get to August though! Take a look at the front cover and the cover story on page 4-5. Outer Banks Harley-Davidson is putting on their 21st Annual Outer Banks Bike Week April 22-30, 2023. They’ve got it all: beautiful beaches, great riding, parties, live music, vendors, bikini contests, and all the entertainment you expect at bike week. Outer Banks Harley-Davidson shares the event with all the biker friendly businesses on the Outer Banks including their satellite stores in Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills. They also host a Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Bike Show on the last Saturday of the event, April 29th. Make your reservations now and get your NC rally year started right!

Speaking of bike shows, January 14th we will be inside the Greensboro Coliseum Complex kicking off 2023 with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Custom Bike Show, presented by Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers. Outer Banks Bike Week 2023 April 22-30

aydreaming of cruising the coastline is a good way to pass these cold January days. om mcgrath’s motorcycle Law Group has always given back to our riding community, and a huge part of that is the yearly Motorcycle Giveaway. Each year from October 15th to the following October 15th, when you see us out at events, you can register for our FREE Motorcycle Giveaway.

On November 1st of each year, we draw one winner from all the registrations that we receive throughout the year. All the winner must do is insure the bike. Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group pays the tax, title, and tags. We even deliver the bike. Not to sound like a cliché, but we really do come to you.

We make sure that we choose different brands and dealerships each year so that everyone has a chance to win their dream bike. We like to make sure that we show our local dealerships that we support them as well. That is why we always purchase a bike from a dealership in one of our service states. We believe that we should support those who support others in our communities.

The 2022 giveaway bike was a brand-new Indian Scout in Black Metallic paint with chrome trim work. You know the old saying about chrome, so we won’t go there. It has an 1133cc liquid cooled v-twin with 100 HP and six speed transmission.

This little baby has some get up and go along with great styling from an iconic motorcycle brand.

November 18, 2022, brought a chilly but clear Carolina day, and our founder, Tom McGrath, met up with attorney Daisha Schwear and South Carolina event coordinator Jay Wright to deliver the bike. South Carolina biker, Jennifer Bell, was the lucky winner for 2022. Jennifer is a regular at the Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group sponsored bike nights at Harley Davidson of Greenville. The 2022 Indian Scout is Jennifer’s first bike. Don’t misunderstand, Jennifer is no stranger to riding. Now though, she won’t be riding on the back of someone else’s bike. We wish Jennifer many, many miles of safe and happy riding! Look for her at next year’s bike nights on that beautiful Indian Scout.

2023 is off to a great start already! The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine has announced its new venture, the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Custom Bike Show. It will be held on January 14, 2023, and Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group will be revealing the 2023 giveaway bike at their booth during the show. he 3rd annual bub’s ride and toy drive was powered by the efforts of Keith Bills of Carolina Steel MM and Brandon McNeely of Blue Collar Cycle Company. Riders for the event gathered at STE Powersports in Statesville, NC on December 10th, but the toy drive had been going on for months. Still when riders arrived, they registered and dropped off more toys under a large metal carport that acted as a drive through toy depot. A good number of cages rolled through to make their donations too. By ride time the tables were lined with toys and Keith took to the microphone to address the crowd. It was the 3rd Annual Bub’s Ride, so Keith laid out a little history of the ride, said some thank you’s and had a prayer. The ride was escorted by local law enforcement and took a nice ride down Hwy 70 to Salisbury, NC ending at Blue Collar Cycle Company.

Riders arrived at Blue Collar Cycle Company and lined the street with bikes. The alley at Blue Collar was full of people hanging out. There was live music floating through the air and Brad Gandy and his better half were serving up some of the best BBQ this side of the Mississippi. Kristin was there representing Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers who also sponsored the BBQ for the riders. Inside Blue Collar was another huge pile of toys. We all ate, drank and hung out for a few hours before little by little the riders all went their separate ways.

This toy run benefits the needy children in Iredell and Rowan Counties and the generosity of the bikers came through again. Over 1000 toys were collected for donation and that folks, will go a long way this Christmas. Brandon McNeely of Blue Collar Cycle Company said, “Words cannot express the gratefulness for the turnout for the 3rd Annual Bub’s Ride. I am thankful for our continued friendship with Keith Bills and his Carolina Steel family. This small idea Keith and I had in 2020 has grown with the biker community.” He thanked everyone involved and made sure to mention that there will be a 4th Annual Bub’s Ride in 2023. Keith mirrored this sentiment and said, “I definitely think it was a success! Thank you, 10,000 times, to all that have participated in today’s toy drive. Absolutely humbled and blessed to be a part of this!”

It was definitely another awesome display by bikers in The Carolinas that care about the people in their community.

16th Annual Barry “Ole Dog” Glenn Memorial Toy Run

arry glenn had a larger than life personality and ran JR’s Corner Tavern with cold beer, 3 Stooges quotes and “friendly” insults. He had a big heart and among other things started up a Toys For Tots Ride to bring some Christmas cheer to kids in need. Unfortunately, we lost Barry in November of 2014, but Barry’s Toys For Tots Ride would live on. David Thompson of Double D Burnout Saloon, took over JR’s Corner Tavern and kept the Toys For Tots Toy Run going as the Barry “Ole Dog” Glenn Memorial Toys For Tots Ride. Over the years, the toy run outgrew JR’s Corner Tavern’s parking lot and now originates from Double D’s and includes JR’s as a stop along the route.

This year’s ride marked the 16th Anniversary of the event and even though the weather was damp, the spirits were not. Motorcycles lined the parking lot of Double D Burnout Saloon in Kernersville, NC on the morning of December 3rd as a light rain fell. Riders gathered inside the bar that also housed overflowing toy collection boxes and a pile of bicycles for the Toys For Tots program. All eyes were on Mad Dog, David Thompson and Barry’s widow Crystal Glenn for the pre-ride meeting

where the emphasis was on the fact that we were riding for the kids. Before the ride took off David called for a moment of silence in Barry’s honor. The bikes fired up and the American Legion Riders from post 87 in High Point led the ride out of the parking lot.

The weather had improved but for those who didn’t want to ride, there was stretched Hummer limo Party Bus that was tagging along. The ride hit some local biker haunts including JR’s Corner Tavern, American Legion Post 87 and The Ole

Watering Hole before heading back to Double D. Once back at Double D Burnout Saloon riders enjoyed some warm food, raffles and auctions.

The poor forecast and dreary weather didn’t stop this tradition. The ride, after party and weeks of collecting toys and bicycles will make sure that kids that rely on the Toys For Tots program will have Merry Christmas. Due to your efforts throughout the year and on the day of the even, $2340.00 in cash, 85 bicycles and 5 to 6 boxes of toys were collected!!! Barry would be proud.

The Granddaddy Of North Carolina Toy Runs

ecember 19, 1981 was our first toy run and the weather outside was truly frightful but that didn’t deter those who started the first Smoky Mountain Toy Run. Their numbers were small but their hearts were large as they began a legacy of bikers giving back to the community that continues today. Fast forward to Saturday, November 5th, 2022 and the 42nd Annual Smoky Mountain Toy Run. Although the weather outside wasn’t frightful, it was still wet and threatened the final outcome for raising money and new toys for Eblen Charities Saint Nicholas Project.

Every Toy Run organizer understands the risk that they face with weather and with each passing year we can only hope and pray that the weather is good for the event. Good weather usually mean large donations. This year every dollar and every toy was definitely needed. Our local Smoky Mountain

Harley Owners Group helped to ease our concern with the announcement that they purchased over 1,000 bikes for the Saint Nicholas Project.

The gates to the event opened at 10am and by 11am we where growing concerned. Fewer riders and passengers means fewer toys and donations. Fortunately the organizers has established a car lane so that folks could drop off donations and that appeared to be going well. Suddenly, as if on cue, the motorcycles and passengers started to arrive. Slowly the parking lot begin to fill,easing our concern. At least we will be able to help provide a Merry Christmas for a few, if not all. In the end we had over 300 motorcycles and 600 plus total participates.

Although the day wasn’t the perfect day for a Toy Run, it did renew my faith in our biker community. Bikers at their best, coming together to help others, and smirking at mother nature to do so. Although it was likely one of the lowest participation counts in recent years, (except 2020, the year of COVID), each rider and passenger can be proud that they stood tall while helping those in need.

Finally, as we prepared to depart, one final rain shower came in a downpour. The rain failed to dampen the spirits of those riding. Laughter and happiness was evident thorughout the crowd. As we traveled west on US70 toward Asheville’ we were reminded of the impact our event has on our communities as hundreds of onlookers; adults and children, stood with us in the rain enjoying the procession as we passed. The joy and happiness served to strengthen our resolve for future years as we,“We Ride for the Kids!”

Springers Bar Toys For Tots Toy Drive

Monday, December 12 was pick up day and the crew at Springers had really come through. When the Marine Corp Reserves showed up, the found 3 over flowing Toys For Tots boxes sitting in front of the band stand. Those 3 boxes were surrounded by 54 bicycles. Fifty-Four bicycles! That’s a haul!

The Reserves came with an Econoline van and stacked as many toys and bikes in it, but had to make multiple trips to back to Springers to

get ‘em all!

The toy drive is over, but there are still plenty of reasons to ride over to Springers bar. Bike night is on Tuesday, live music every Friday and Saturday and Sunday rides that end back at the bar. They’ve got a hell of a band lineup for January, check out their ad! The bar is located at 405 Rocky Knoll Rd. Greensboro, NC and has parking lot with dedicated motorcycle parking. Ride on over and have a good time.

37th Annual Greenville, County SC ABATE Toy Run

Club for the 37th Annual ABATE Christmas Toy Run. This toy run is the oldest and longest running toy run in Greenville, SC. This year the weather cooperated as the day was a partly sunny cool day with temps in the high 50’s to low 60’s.

The Toy Run Parade was scheduled to start at 2:00 PM and by that time there were over 310 bikes and riders lined up with their bikes overflowing with toys. There were many folks besides me hanging out and visiting with old friends in the staging area of the parking lot which was completely full of bikes. I visited with some friends I didn’t remember and made some new ones. That’s how the crowd is; many friendly folks there for the same purpose. That purpose was to benefit abused and unfortunate children.

Again, this year commemorative T-shirts were being sold with the proceeds going to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. The ride left the Shrine club at 2:00 PM sharp with an escort by the Parker District Fire Department and the Greenville County Sheriffs Dept. They traveled thru Greenville until arriving at their destination in front of Storage Sense located on White Horse Road. They were welcomed by volunteers with coffee and hot chocolate. For those that went directly to the ending location, they could hear the roar of the thundering motorcycles and the siren of the fire engine as they approached.

Those that didn’t ride were for the most part in cages and went directly to the finish carrying toys for the underprivileged children of the Julie Valentine Center that benefits the sexually and physically abused children all year. It was a well-attended event and will make a lot of children happy on Christmas morning. I’ll be looking forward to next year’s event and hope you will as well. Many thanks to all involved in making this toy run a success as always.

32nd Annual Conover School Toy Run

hat started out as a dreary, worry filled and somewhat somber morning turned into another success for the 32nd Annual Conover School Toy Run. The weather at The Wizard Saloon, Hickory, NC, started out overcast and rainy. Mike Dyson was under the weather and would not be able to attend. This was the first time in the history of the Toy Run that Mike was not there.

But the ride must go on, and ride we did. I stepped up and lead the 157 motorcycles and Arnold Kerley pulling Santa in the sleigh. With no police escort (even though one did stop traffic for us to leave the Wizard parking lot) we had to have road guards so we all could arrive at the school safely and together. Thank you to all the riders who helped block intersections, we could not have done it without your help and support.

We arrived at the school to the delight of all the kids who were anxiously awaiting the Bikers. They had been practicing all year to put on a show for their biker friends. Thanks to all the volunteers, several of which were new this year, we were able to purchase, wrap and deliver presents for all the kids. We then went back to the Wizard for Mike’s homemade potato soup and chicken salad sandwiches.

After eating, it was downstairs to begin the auction, spin the wheel for prizes, buy a t shirt, and draw the 50/50 and the winning raffle ticket. Thanks to our hard-working volunteers we had several auction items, and all items were sold. Kinley drew our 50/50 ticket which Richard Fleck won and generously donated all the money back! And Rowen pulled our winning raffle ticket and Jarhead was the winner of that!

Mike has now started a 501(c)(3) charity called Mike’s Hand Up Charities. While the Conover School is and will be a recipient of this charity, they will not be the only recipient. This charity is about helping those in need, giving a hand up, not a handout. There will be different events held throughout 2023 so be on the look out for those events and get ready to ride! Thank you to everybody that worked, volunteered, donated, and rode that day, it is because of all of you that we can continue to do what we do!

Charlotte CBA Fall Swap Meet & Bike Show

ovember 12-13 was the second installment of the biannual Charlotte CBA Fall Swap Meet & Bike Show at the Rowan County Fairgrounds sponsored by South Main Customs, Blue Collar Cycle Company, MAL Entertainment, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers and Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. This is a must attend event for bikers who love the old school events, and this year was the swap meet’s 50th Anniversary! Charlotte CBA member Rick Nail has been the event coordinator of this event since its inception in 1972 and with a crew of CBA members working the event it continues to be a staple in the motorcycle community.

This year’s event followed a week’s worth of heavy rain that should have drowned out the Rowan County Fairgrounds, but Saturday morning the vendors were set up all down the midway and inside the two buildings on the property. If you are looking for new or old hard to find motorcycle parts, motorcycle memorabilia or a good time, you will find plenty of it at the CBA Swap Meet. But that’s just the start of it. You can hang out and listen to live music under the expo sized tent on the midway and inside the bike show building.

The Mechanized Calvary lines up 3 civil war era cannons and fires em off at the beginning and middle of the day. It’s a

hell of a thing to witness. You can feel the cannon go off if you are standing anywhere near them. The cannon fire is followed by a quick memorial to all our fallen brothers and sisters as Rick honors them by calling out their names. Next up is the downhill Barbie Car racing which is always a hoot. Pick your miniature ride and race down the hills at the back of the midway! This year the CBA Swap Meet featured some amateur wrestling with a full on wrestling ring. These redneck warriors did their best to entertain the crowd of bikers that gathered around to heckle them. Honestly, I thought some of the spectators were gonna get in the ring! Saturday night caps off under the midway tent with Cabby’s Beard Products Beard Contest. A dozen bikers with proud biker beards take the stage to be judged on their wooliness and win prizes from Cabby’s. Once the dudes leave the stage it’s time for the Wet T-Shirt Contest. It’s definitely the most action that that midway tent sees all day long, go figure! I don’t have to tell ya what goes on, but it causes quite a ruckus and there is a fair share of hoot’n and holler’n going on before they hand out cash prizes to the gals who won over the crowd.

If you have found all the parts you need for your upcoming build and have had your fill of wrestling, racing and cannon fire then head on inside and check out the Terry Brown Memorial Bike Show sponsored by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. The bike show building has a few regular vendors hugging the walls, but the center floor is reserved for the bike show. The show goes on all day Saturday and the awards are handed out at the end of the event on Sunday. This year’s bike show saw hardware handed out in 11 classes. Angel Pousada won the Stock Class with second place going to John Wilson. Randall Shaffer took home 1st and 2nd place in the Bobber class. Brad Barrett beat Terry Kepley to take first place in the Modified class, but Terry won the Street Custom class. Kristin Shipwash took first place in the Radical class. Tim Griggs swept the Dresser Class. Dano and Casey Simmons took first and second place in the Custom Dresser Class. Daniel Crum won the Competition class. Tim Griggs won first place in the Antique class leaving second place for Mike McCloud. Bob Hartline was first place in the Exotic class and Zach Shipwash took first place in the Rat Class. The People’s Choice Awards come with cash prizes and went to John Wilson, Bob Hartline and Randall Shaffer respectively.

Cox’s Harley-Davidson Christmas Luau

s there a better way to get some christmas shopping done than to have a cold drink in your hand while you browse? The answer is NO and Cox’s Harley-Davidson of Asheboro, knows this. They hosted a Christmas Luau and provided FREE pina coladas and free beer from Four Saints Brewery. Whichever was your poison, it was sure to enhance your holiday shopping!

The Christmas Luau event was from 10-5pm on a chilly December day, but the parking lot was slam full of bikes and cars that were gonna take advantage of the occasion. A food truck was set up outside with Mexican cuisine so there was a party in the parking lot as well! Inside the dealership the blender was getting a workout and the pina coladas were flowing. There was a red tag sale going on with a discount on the new Harley-Davidson motorcycles that were on the dealership

floor, and I heard the “sale bell” rung at least once! The parts, service and MotorClothes departments were buzzing all day long. Since it was a Luau Party, Cox’s Harley-Davidson had a $50 gift card for the best Hawaiian shirt that came in that day. Scott Howell took home that gift card with a Hawaiian shirt with his wife’s face as part of the pattern. Well done sir!

Batchelor’s Tavern Toy Run

ecember 3th was 58 degrees and raining. it was also the date of Batchelor’s Tavern 29th Annual Toy Run. I had promised the organizers of the toy run that I would attend. I asked my wife if she wanted to go with me, and she mumbled something about people too stupid to come in out of the rain. I don’t own a rain suit, so I put on 3 layers of clothes and headed towards Spring Hope.

The toy run was started in 1994 by “Snooks” Robbins. Snooks has passed on, and the Tavern is no longer in business, but the toy run is still going strong. It was at the Tavern until 2018, then one year at Michael’s Showside Grille. Then in 2020 the event moved to Webb’s Mill. The mill originally ground corn, but in the early 1900’s it was converted to produce electricity. The 3 turbines are still in place, and the electrical gear has been upgraded. The mill is now an event center and produces more electricity than it consumes.

At 1:00 we pulled out of Webb’s Mill to deliver an enclosed trailer full of toys to Ephesus Baptist Church in Spring Hope. This year, only about 2 dozen bikes made the ride to the church. Snooks son Josh Robbins led the ride wearing a Santa suit. The toys go to the Tar River Baptist Association Toy Ministry, where they are distributed to needy families in Nash County. Coffee and donuts were served, followed by a prayer.

After the donations were delivered, the group headed back to Webb’s Mill to join those who decided to hunker down and stay dry. A pig was on the cooker, and fixins were on the tables for all to enjoy. There was a cash bar inside the old mill, and a large, covered pavilion. The site is on the banks of the Tar River with some nice views. After everybody was full, Josh acted as MC and the raffle prize drawings were underway. There were also some special items that were auctioned off to the highest bidder. Additional donations of $5,100 were raised for the Church.

Many thanks to all the people that donated food, time, toys and money. Despite the weather, it was a great day and I plan to attend next year. It’s always the first Saturday of December. Hope to see you there for the 30th annual event.

Polk County Toy Run

he polk county toy run was started in 2002 by Chris and Dee Dee Grady. That first year they had an impressive 75 bikes come out to help the children of Polk County, NC have a Merry Christmas. Chris and Dee Dee ran the ride until Louis Durham took the reins in 2005 and put on the event for one year. Barry Gee took up the roll of event coordinator after Louis and has been in charge of the event since 2006, building the event up each year. “The event has just grown each year, by at least 50 bikes per year. We have had one or two bad years where it rained or something like that”, Barry said. Something like that included the Covid years where it was hard to get folks to gather in large groups.

This year, 2022, is the 20th Anniversary of the Polk County Toy Run and it brought out a crowd. Riders come from Asheville, Greenville, Spartanburg and as far as Charlotte every year and a total of 775 people and 560 motorcycles showed up on this November 26th at the Saluda Fire Department in Saluda, NC to take part in the toy run. Santa and Mrs. Claus are on hand every year to greet the riders and this year, the Grinch was in attendance as well. Bikers across the Carolinas are in the giving spirit this time of year, but it also helps that this 26 mile scenic ride rolls through six quaint townships on some of the most beautiful riding roads in North Carolina. “We’re lucky that we are in the area that we are and that’s one comment that we get every year, they love my route, it’s just beautiful country” says Barry Gee about the riding area.

In fact, they have been doing the same route for the last 17 years so residents along the way set out in their lawn chair to wave at the procession of motorcycles as they pass by. A ride of this size requires a little help along the way and Barry gives credit to the law enforcement and emergency agencies that have the intersections blocked all along the route.

The 20th Annual Polk County Toy run raised a whopping $31,000 and collected 66 bags of toys. All proceeds will be distributed to help needy Polk County children through Polk DSS, Steps to Hope, Outreach and the Polk County Sheriff’s Department. Barry said “I’ve got people and sponsors who have done it all 17 years that I’ve been part of it. Everyone who comes here says it just feels like one big family.” Barry wanted to offer a heartfelt “thank you” to all who supported this great benefit.

Christmas And New Tidings Of Joy At Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson

ort bragg harley-davidson celebrates each season with vigor and zest. Christmas is definitely one season that you don’t want to miss. The store and bikes adorned with festive Christmas colors. Ornaments, tinsile, tassels and bows elegantly decorate each and every tree. While other places decorate, as it is the season to be jolly, it’s the atmosphere that seems to lift the spirits the most!

Santa Claus seems to call it home during December. Mr & Mrs Claus began the month of December with their annual, Pictures with Santa; beside a pretty shiny and red Harley Trike, as their getaway sled. Santa’s always busy making a fuss over the kids; taking pictures, preparing his lists and the big guy never fails to make it to the pancake breakfast before the big day!

The Fort Bragg HD Team stand ready to assist. They really add that personal touch. The hospitality of the entire crew is spectacular! They offer smiles and warm greetings. The friendly staff, giftwrapped your items for free; while another made you a beverage for the wait. They are always present and eager to make your shopping experience pleasant.

Then, December 24th, was the “Enjoy” last minute Christmas Shopping, with Cocktails, Cocoa, & Cookies. Well, we all need to get some last-minute items; that’s always a hit. Where else do you get a cocktail and snack for stopping by? You always get that “coming home” feeling. The community is involved, and many great causes are represented. A lot of children receive gifts and good things happen because Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson is active as a hometown support for bikers and their honorable causes.

December 31st, was also done up in Harley-Davidson style, taking us from one year to the next. The New Year’s Eve party also hosted beer, cocktails, and raffles! Salutes, to many good and glad tidings yet to come during the New Year! As we looked forward towards the coming day; a new year! Happy 2023!

There are great and grand plans for this New Year. Events, benefits and lots of parties await the community. 23rd Annual Rutherford County Toy Run

n sunday, november 20th, i rode west to attend the 23rd Annual Rutherford County Toy Run. The Toy Run started at 1:30PM near Spindale, NC in the old Kmart parking lot behind Denny’s, and rode with a police escort through Rutherfordton, Spindale, and Forest City before ending at the CCIB Land. We all prayed for good weather. Former Moose Riders along with the Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) were responsible for the run to collect toys for area children so they have a pleasant Christmas.

Sunday’s weather was great for a toy run with temps in the upper 40’s, and sunny skies. I arrived at the CCIB Land a little before 2:00PM and parked in front by the gate. I walked inside to put a stack of Carolinas Full Throttle Magazines on the stage by the minibike they were raffling off and talked with a few friends. I watched as “Pegleg” tended the large containers of soup. They had potato soup, and vegetable soup, plus corn bread, crackers, and tea. It was their regular menu for a cool motorcycle

ride.

We heard the rumble of motorcycles in the distance, and then the sharp sound of the police car’s sirens. The run was coming in. I stood across the road with the sun at my back so I could get some good shots. I noticed a lot of friends ride by – some waved, others didn’t even see me. An estimated 200 bikes were in the run this year.

After the bikes parked, the bikers lined up in two long lines – one for the food, and the other to bring the toys to the large toy trailer. I met a lot of friends who I hadn’t seen in a while. Later, they would have door prize drawings along with the results of the 50/50 drawing.

I talked with a few friends as they stood in line. Some I had seen the day before at Murphey’s Toy Run. I took a lot of pictures of the people waiting in line. Everybody had smiles on their faces because they knew that they were going to make some young child happy on Christmas morning. You couldn’t ask for a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. It was a rewarding experience – as always. We were all glad that the weather cooperated. The children will have a lot of toys this Christmas.

Misfits Motorsports Of Lincolnton

t the stroke of midnight on new year’s January 1, 2023, will be a magical moment for bikers in Lincolnton, NC. Misfits Motorsports of Lincolnton will be official.

The familiar local bike shop that has taken care of area bikers for years, Magic’s Motorsports, has changed hands. Mike Head will be stepping down as owner and become a consultant and start his retirement journey. The new owners, Mary Thomas and Jason Rhoney should be familiar faces as they are current employees.

You may be wondering the reasoning behind the name Misfits Motorsports. Mary and Jason spent quite some time going through name choices and felt like Misfits was the best fit for them. To them, Misfits is a kind yet effective play on their new business model of doing things a little differently. They plan to keep the business the same under the new ownership. They will continue to work on all name brand motorcycles and dirt bikes.

Misfits Motorsports are fortunate to keep the same location and phone number. They do have a few new goals for the future of their business, starting with getting everything in place to have the ability to sale used motorcycles. Another stride they are working on is the capability to manufacture custom parts. The new owners will continue to strive to provide superior services to their customers. Here is a little about each member of the shop.

Mary Thomas grew up in the motorcycle industry thanks to her parents Mike and Maria Head. She also grew up around motocross racing and motorcycle drag racing. She started working at Magic’s six years ago as parts person. She spent the first 5 years running the parts department and gaining a lot of knowledge of all major bands. Last year Magic’s decided to hire another mechanic, so Mary stepped up and started learning how to work on motorcycles.

Jason Rhoney has been in the motorcycle community most of his life. He graduated from MMI in 2007 and since then has worked in dealerships and small shops while also serving in the U.S. Army. Jason will have graduated from Lenoir Rhyne University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics.

Mike Head is well known in the motorcycle community and industry with 40 plus years of knowledge working on all kinds of motorcycles. His knowledge spans from all major Metric brands and Harley-Davidsons. He also spent many years around motocross and drag racing.

Sweets is the first face you see when you walk into Magic’s Motorsports and will be staying with Misfits Motorsport after the changeover. She may not have a background in the motorcycle world but, since coming aboard with Magic’s Motorsports she has gained much knowledge about the motorcycle industry.

Annual Toys For Tots Ride Helps Local Children This Holiday Season

Harley-Davidson hosted the 26th Annual USMC and Law Riders MC Toys for Tots Ride. This escorted ride features live music, door prizes, free food, and good will.

The USMC and Law Riders MC Toys for Tots charity ride is unique in being one of the few fully escorted rides throughout the low country. With the support of North Charleston, Charleston and Mt. Pleasant Police Departments, the ride can travel from Low Country Harley-Davidson, across 526 through Mt. Pleasant on Hwy 17, and return to the dealership for food, music and giveaways.

Registration begins at Low Country HarleyDavidson at 12:00PM on Sunday, November 20th. Cost of the ride is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger or one unwrapped toy per per-

son. There will be a Presentation of Colors followed by the singing of the National Anthem prior to the escorted ride which leaves at 1:00PM.

Over 300 riders gathered to attend the 26th Annual USMC and Law Riders MC Toys for Tots charity ride and raised over $3300 and collected 230 toys for less fortunate children in the low country community.

retty cool, right?! it was definitely worth the wait. We brought her home October 27th. HoneyBun took her out that weekend for its 500 mile puttputt (break-in) and then got the service done and out of the way. The weather cooperated. Now we are “good to go”. We headed to Carolina Beach for the weekend while the warm Fall weather continued. But all too soon, the chilly temperatures arrived. We bundled

up in lots of layers and headed out anyway. There were a few others out there on two wheels but not many. We put another 200+ miles on the odometer! I can now vouch for the Bitch Pad… It is worthy! My Man upgraded the seat to heated and cooled. Bonus cuz we’ve ridden through Death Valley in 115 degree temperatures, in full leathers (that’s another story, for sure)! That cooled seat would have come in handy. Here’s to lots of Winter Riding (somebody please distract Old Man Winter) and here’s to 2023! What’s that old saying? May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields.

14th Annual Cleveland County CBA Ride To The Shelters

n sunday, december 11th, the cleveland County CBA/ABATE held their 14th Annual Ride to the Men’s and Women’s Shelters of Cleveland County. The ride originated at the Shelby VFW Post 4066 on Sumter Street in Shelby and left at noon. The donations of toiletries, cleaning supplies, and other simple things listed on the flyer were collected at two places before the ride: Keith’s Body Shop and the VFW Post.

When Cindy and I went shopping last Wednesday, we bought a bag of toiletries for the shelter. Other than the shaving cream and razors, they could be used by any man, woman, or child in the shelters. I also cleaned out my T-Shirt drawer and gave them about 30 new T-Shirts along with a warm winter jacket.

The weather all week was miserable with cold rain and cloudy skies. Sunday was no different. The humidity was so high you could cut it with a knife. There was rain in the forecast but only a slight mist when I left home at 10:30AM. I didn’t ride “Miss Vickie” to the VFW Post. I drove my ’72

GTO instead and arrived about 10:50AM. I was surprised to see the small parking lot almost empty – only one bike –“Snake’s”. There was a truck hooked to a trailer that would be filled with the donations.

Haley was in charge. She’s the face of the Cleveland County CBA/ABATE. Her smile makes everyone feel welcome. She was on her Harley ready to lead the ride. She is really serious about this ride, and the donations to the shelters. It means a lot to her, and she shows it.

Only a few bikers rode in because of the threatening weather. Others drove in to drop off their donations, and then left. As it got closer to noon, the trailer was full of donations. Haley and “Snake” followed by the other bikes roared out of the lot. After they all left, the Sunday afternoon was quiet again. I left and headed home. It was a great way to spend a Sunday with friends helping people in need.

The Motorcycle Industry’s Vision For Decarbonization

he motorcycle riders foundation recently attended a panel by the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers. The discussion centered on “The Motorcycle Industry’s Vision for Decarbonization.” As in the United States, there is a growing movement to shift away from carbon-based fuel and toward decarbonization and elimination of emissions.

While motorcycle emissions account for less than 1% of all emissions in Europe, the motorcycle industry is taking a proactive approach to the future of fueling their transportation system. Regulators in Europe have already set 2035 as the deadline for the ban on the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines. So far, motorcycles have escaped such a ban, but there is little doubt they will come under the microscope of regulators soon.

European motorcycle manufacturers see the writing on the wall and are navigating a potentially complex set of rules and regulations. Two camps have formed within Europe on the topic, one camp focused on strict regulations including the banning of combustion engines and picking winners and losers for which technologies will replace what is on the road today. The second camp is focused on market-based solutions, allowing all technologies to compete, that in theory will lead to the most efficient and cost-effective technologies winning out. Some of the new technology being discussed includes electric

bikes, swappable batteries, synthetic fuels, hydrogen fuel cells and hybrid powertrains.

There is also a fear in Europe that other regions of the world have already taken the lead in this technology and Europe is playing catch up. Specifically, the electric car industry and the success of brands like Tesla in the United States has Europeans concerned. European motorcycle firms want to be the leaders in the future of motorcycle technology. European advances in fueling and swappable battery projects could help solve the problem of range and lack of charging infrastructure that is the Achilles heel of electric transportation.

Why does this matter to bikers in America? Europe has over 40 manufacturing facilities and 35 research and development sites across the continent. They are taking a forward leaning approach and have stated their goal to be industry leaders. If Europe chooses a market-based approach and allows the development of a wide variety of technologies American manufactures may end of playing catch up.

While Europe and the United States have different views on many topics, it was great to hear the closing message from the panel in Europe. “Motorcycles are not part of the problem; they are part of the solution.” We at the Motorcycle Riders Foundation couldn’t agree more.

Murphey’s 28th Annual Toy Run

n saturday november 19th, John Murphey of Murphey’s Scooter-Shed in Kings Mountain, NC held his 28th Annual Toy Run. The 50 mile, police escorted, ride will benefit the Shriner’s Burn Center, Oxford Orphanage Masonic Home for Children, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kings Mountain Police Department “Shop with a Cop”.

God continued to watch over John’s event. It was another beautiful sunny fall day with temps due to rise into the lower 50’s, which encouraged many bikers to come for the ride. The toys collected filled many huge boxes. This year Murphey asked for a $5.00 donation along with the new toy for every person going on the run. That included the run, and BBQ afterward.

Murphey’s Scooter-Shed is in a residential neighborhood next to John’s home on a deadend road. There is a small parking area around the shop, and during the toy runs; it’s full of bikers buying t-shirts, renewing old acquaintances, and making new ones while dropping off the toys.

I got to Murphey’s at about 10:15AM and parked by the road going to Murphey’s shop. There weren’t too many bikes there yet. Some bikers come at the last minute while the rest are leaving on the run. I brought a stack of Full Throttle magazines to the registration table when I gave them my donation. I saw John talking to a couple women volunteers. John looks more like Santa Claus every year. His white beard is getting longer every year and his portly physique makes him look a lot like the Santa we all know and love.

After talking to John for a short time, he had to make sure that everything goes according to plan. I walked over to watch the cooks chop the cooked cabbage. It was a community chop. There were so many volunteers chopping that there wasn’t enough room for everybody to chop. It looked like a lot of fun! The BBQ served at Murphey’s is some of the best in the area.

I watched as one of the Crimson Crusaders M/M rode his trike all the way to the registration table. Then he opened the back of the trike and the trailer he was towing to empty out armloads of toys for the children.

Then I walked down the long line of motorcycles, and heard many people laughing, and getting acquainted. Down the row of beautiful motorcycles were a few Victory and Indian motorcycles, but most of the bikes were Harleys or Japanese Harley wannabees. I saw a few young people on sport bikes, dirt bikes, and even a little Honda Grom. There were a few

I always like to get to the toy run early so I can visit with people before they leave. Many riders don’t come back to Murphey’s after the ride for the free BBQ. I met a few old friends that I only see at the yearly toy runs. It was good to see them again.

As it got close to noon, a man named Robin got the microphone, and had a story to tell. A few years ago, when he was struggling to make ends meet, he didn’t have any money for Christmas presents for his eight children. He told about when he and his family came home one evening, there were many presents on his front porch. All the boxes had the names of his children on them. He had no idea where they came from until earlier this year when he learned that the toys came from Murphey’s Toy Run. He thanked John repeatedly for all he does.

That got me thinking about the toys gathered during a Toy Run. Who determines where they go, and how do they get there. There must be an army of volunteers helping with this. We have all the fun of the ride while they have to make sure that all the needy kids get a present.

At exactly 12:00 noon, the run began with a police escort with Murphey leading the run as usual on his custom-made Indian look-alike bike. The route was planned ahead, and every intersection would be blocked off by either the police or fire departments. I took pictures of the riders as they left. They left quickly but still the 304 bikes took about 15 minutes to pass.

After all the bikes left, I headed back home. It’s a great way to spend a late fall Saturday, and it helps a lot of kids have a Merry Christmas.

Larry J. Morris Memorial & Oconee County SC ABATE Host Annual Toy Run

aturday december 10th, 2022, was the 29th Annual Oconee County, SC ABATE Toy Run which helps underprivileged children receive Christmas toys.

The ride staged at noon and departed at 1:00 pm from the Depot in Westminster, SC. This year the weather was uncooperative; however, we did have a Police escort along the way to our destination in Walhalla, SC which is a route many of us travel all the time. Our destination was VFW Post 6830 in Walhalla located at 2415 Highlands Hwy. The weather was cool and misty with temps in the mid50s; the clouds cleared out around 2:30 well after the Toy Run.

This year members and friends arrived at the VFW, and we placed their toys on the table allocated for the toys and an hour earlier there were 4 bikes and 6 packing boxes full of toys that arrived. The toys and bikes were brought in by the Chief of Police of Westminster, SC Chief Matt Patterson. This gesture by the Westminster Police helped take the Toy Run over the goal of two tables full of toys. This will provide the children of Oconee

County a very Merry Christmas by having a present to open on Christmas Morning. The Officers of Westminster are truly Santa’s helpers.

After delivery of the toys, some members helped spread the Christmas cheer at the VFW where lunch was served. There was chili and stew and potato soup available. I might say that the chili was delicious. Thanks go out to everyone involved in the Annual ABATE Toy Run, especially Clyde Jones, Mary Oglesby, Bobbie Smith, Matt Patterson, Allen Moore, Lauren Bryson, Scott Sullinger, Pat Sterling, Deb Pierce and Grace and Chris Bowen of the Wolfpack MC of Oconee County, SC Chapter and the Police Officers of the Westminster Police Department.

Hopefully next year things will be back to what we know as normal and 2023 will be a year of prosperity for everyone.

Dave Hennig’s Vintage 1947 H-D WLC Racer “Kilroy”

Dave Hennig’s Dad brought him up around hot rods, motorcycles, and art. As a matter of fact, Dave learned how to pinstripe from one of his dad’s friends, some guy by the name of Ed Roth. To this day Dave is still pulling pinstripes and is still very much into the hotrod and vintage motorcycle scene. He snagged this sweet 1942 Harley-Davidson WLC off of eBay from a retired Army Sargent in Fayetteville, NC to build a race bike for The Race Of Gentlemen in New Jersey. “I have several friends that go to that race every year with their 45’s. They talked me into it”, Dave admitted. “When I got this bike, it was a running basket case.” Dave said. Amongst other things, the bike was smoking and not shifting right. Dave added, “I found my friend, Jim Blair (Jim’s Motor Service) in High Point, NC and took the bike over to him.” They got it all stripped down for racing, Jim got the mechanics of the bike going in the right direction while Dave focused on getting the bikes paint the way he wanted it. Dave lost his father nine years ago but pays homage to him by using 53 as the bikes race number, a nod to his Dad’s birth year of 1953. “He’s the whole reason I got into Harleys and hotrods. So, my race number has a little part of him with me any time I’m on the track”, Dave added. The bike was built in time for T.R.O.G. but Mother Nature had other plans and weather from a hurricane flooded the beaches and the event was cancelled. Not to worry Dave and his racing buddies at “Flat Bastard Racing” have several events lined up for next year!

What Changes For 2023?

ow was your 2022? mine wasn’t all that great, had a lot of surgeries, but the Lord got me through them. Now I’m just in better health to get out and do more stuff.

Some people in the ministry field can come up with more excuses, why they can’t do it. Well, I don’t have the money, don’t really know where to go. If your heart is in the right place and you’re supposed to go, all you have to do is ask the Lord and He’ll provide.

Thank Him everyday for the strength to go out and minister. Believe and He’ll supply the needs and where to go.

We have lost a lot of Christians this year that were on fire for the Lord. We need to be prayed up and take over where they left off. Sooner are later, we all will die, some will be ready some won’t.

Hebrews 9:7 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement.

We as Christians need to get prayed up and hit the battlefield and tell everyone about Jesus.

Many will make resolutions, some we’ll keep, some we won’t.

My husband and I purchased an old home in Northern New York State from two elderly sisters. Winter was fast approaching and I was concerned about the house’s lack of insulation. “If they could live here all those years, so can we!” my husband confidently declared. One November night the temperature plunged to below zero, and we woke up to find interior walls covered with frost. My husband called the sisters to ask how they had kept the house warm. After a rather brief conversation, he hung up. “For the past 30 years,” he muttered, “they’ve gone to Florida for the winter.”

A week later he called the National Weather Service again, “Is it going to be a very cold winter?” “Yes”, the man replied, “it’s going to be a very cold Winter.” So, the Chief goes back to his people and orders them to go and find every scrap of wood they can find. Two weeks later he calls the National Weather Service again: “Are you absolutely sure that the Winter is going to be very cold?” “Absolutely,” the man replies, “the Indians are collecting wood like crazy!”
