ell, It is finally summer and we have had some really nice weather. We have had some really hot weather, too, but luckily the rain has seemed to move away from our area. That is not good news for the farmers, but it sure is good news for the motorcyclists and event promoters. We went to Thunder Tower H-D’s 10th Anniversary Days Of Thunder in Columbia, SC and it was so hot that I had to take refuge inside where it was air-conditioned. Lots of other people had the same idea and the show room was buzzing with people. The Prestons are such good hosts and always put on a top-notch event. You can read about it in this issue, but I would recommend that you visit them the next time they have an event and experience it for yourself. Thunder Tower H-D is truly a destination. July 4th weekend is coming up and I want to take a moment to remind everyone that it is more than a 3-day weekend with picnics and family get togethers. July 4, 2016 is the 240th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Men not only labored to write the Declaration of Independence, but “with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence”, they mutually pledged to each other their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor by signing this document. It was not taken lightly as it was sure to enrage King George III and escalate retaliation by the British Army. This was not a spur of the moment decision as the British had been oppressing the colonists with occupation and taxes for several years. Remember the Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773 and British attempts to seize the colonists’ guns, powder, and ammunition were the cause of the battles of Lexington and Concord in April of 1775. Sound familiar? The signers of the Declaration of Independence also noted “all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed”. Again, we find our nation at a pivotal time in history. We must decide if we are going to continue on the path that we are on or demand that our representatives follow Constitutional principles. So as we enjoy the holiday weekend, I hope that we will take a moment to reflect on the continual cost of freedom and our responsibility to secure it for future generations. To quote Dean Collins, SC ABATE Assistant State Coordinator, “Remember: To Ride Free Is Not A Free Ride!”

This is why riders passing through to or from Myrtle Beach, SC pulled into Beach House HD for food, music, and to check out the variety of vendors during their Spring Beach Bike Rally this year. One of my favorite vendors was there with her unique ladies apparel including jewelry, clothing, and boots swimming in “cowgirl bling!” Walking around outside there was a variety of vendors including some with mugs to keep your drinks ice cold even on the longest ride, another with a bottle of magic purple liquid that will keep everything from your rings to chrome looking brand new, pin stripping, jewelry, clothing, vests, helmets, leathers, a booth to add speakers to your bike, and patio furniture which was a favorite for those wanting to kick back and relax for a minute. Inside BHHD the AC was a nice break from the heat and a few people were signing papers to leave that day on a new ride! Once you’ve visited the vendor tents, had some food, checked out the bikes and apparel inside, and mingled you had to grab a free water from the sweet gentleman with His Laboring Few Biker Ministry of Jesus Christ Shallotte Chapter. Then head on down the road to your next destination but this is a must stop during bike week. If you did not make it to this year’s rally, it’s OK. We won’t hold it against you but be sure to make it next year in your travels to 4919 Ocean Hwy W. in Shallotte, NC. Big Bikers For Purple Hearts Honor Ride

By: Rose and Lloyd American Legion Post 55 in Winston-Salem, NC sponsored a ride on June 4th to help raise money for Northwest Purple Heart Foundation. If anyone is unfamiliar with the Purple Heart it is a metal of honor given by all branches of service to anyone that is injured during battle. Post 55 had two recipients to attend, Army Veteran Justin Vocke, and Army Veteran Chance Cleary. There were six recipients present. Benny Vickers, a Vietnam Veteran Purple Heart recipient, was present with the Purple Heart car he races in the Junior Circuit. It was a beautiful day with a beautiful ride through the country to The Carolina Field Of Honor on West Market Street in Kernersville. There was lunch provided by Bojangles, Chic-fil-A, and Jimmy John’s. Approximately 150 bikers came out to honor these Veterans. There was a great raffle with some wonderful prizes. By: Meredith W. I was glad to be a part of the New Hanover County Firefighters Associations Poker Run held May 15th 2016 at Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson. Registration was 11:30 a.m. and KSU was 1 p.m. and in attendance were some great people ready to ride. All proceeds benefited the New Hanover County Firefighters Associations Scholarship Program. The ride left from CCHD off of Market Street in Wilmington, and stopped at fire stations throughout town where each participant drew their card in hopes of the best or worst hand. Each won a prize as well as having a chance at the 50/50 raffle and door prizes. There was also a stop at Mission BBQ and when the poker run ended back at Carolina Coast HD, hotdogs and hamburgers were there for the taking! After everyone was full, the winners were announced and it was a wrap. Another great ride for a worthy cause here in Wilmington, N.C. A special thanks is due to Carolina Coast HD and all who came to show their support.

SC ABATE Motorcycle Awareness Rally

By: Kickstart & Donut This year the SC ABATE Motorcycle Awareness Rally was held on May 8th. Even though it was Mother’s Day, that didn’t seem to bother too many bikers. Lots of ABATE supporters still came together on this Sunday to support motorcycle awareness. Some us may have seen mom before the ride or some of us planned on seeing mom afterwards. The sun was heating up Columbia, SC as always, but we made it even hotter by cranking up them steel horses and cruising down Main Street to the South Carolina State House to defend our rights as bikers. There is nothing more awesome than riding in a pack with the City of Columbia Police Department escort. The day began with a meet and greet in the parking lot of Carolina Honda. When we arrived at the State House, SC ABATE Coordinator, Ralph Bell acknowledged and thanked all rider associations in attendance. The Reverend David Dooley gave the invocation, which included a moment of silence for the 137 motorcyclists that lost their lives in 2015. After the invocation everyone stood for the Pledge Of Allegiance and the National Anthem. Speakers included State Senator Katrina Shealy (state senate bill S1223 “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month”), State Representative Donna Hicks (Governor’s “Motorcycle Awareness Month” Proclamation), 2nd District Congressman Joe Wilson, Kevin Shwedo (Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles), John Petrush (state rider education program), Purple Pan Cindy (Accident Scene Management), and Rich Kitko (Gold Wing Riders Association Chapter P) “Bubba’s Bell” was rung for the 136 motorcyclists that we lost last year. Boat Mike asked all attendees to speak out the names of riders they knew that have lost their lives in 2015 as the bell is rung for each name. Motorcycle Accident Lawyer Chad Fuller of Tom McGrath’s

Motorcycle Law Group was presented the “Motorcycle Community Leader” award for his timeless efforts to teach motorcycle clubs and organizations the importance of adequate coverage and what not to do during a traffic stop. NCOC Announces Unified Protest Against Motorcycle Profiling By: David “Double D” Devereaux (MotorcycleProfilingProject.com) The National Council of Clubs held a press conference at Shamrock Cycles in Austin, Texas on May 17, 2016, the 1st Anniversary of the tragedy in Waco, to announce a National Protest Against Motorcycle Profiling and Discrimination to take place at the ROT Rally in Austin, June 9-12. Representatives from motorcycle clubs across the country met in Austin to present a unified voice in defense of the community. Motorcycle profiling is a national epidemic impacting motorcyclists coast to coast. There is a well-established pattern of evidence proving law enforcement consistently targets individuals for no other reason than their appearance or membership in a motorcycle club. These clubs are a microcosm of America, comprised of riders from all walks of life. In attendance were Christian clubs, Military Veterans clubs, Clean and Sober clubs, Child Abuse Assistance Clubs, 1% clubs, and riding clubs reflective of the rich culture and history of our country and the multitude of personal interests available to us all. Significantly, representatives of many national organizations vilified by law enforcement and the media were represented and standing together projecting a unified voice and agreement on the issue of discrimination and profiling. This press conference was also tangible proof that clubs that allegedly do not associate with each other can peacefully come together and unify around common ground issues that impact the entire community. Double D explained, “To be clear, the National Council Of Clubs does not speak for any one club or on behalf of any one club. The NCOC represents the collective voice of the community united around the idea that membership in motorcycle clubs and expression of that membership should be fundamentally protected by the 1st Amendment and not used as a profiling factor.” Speakers presenting at the press conference were David “Double D” Devereaux (NCOC Spokesperson), Brent Coon (NCOC legal advisor and Waco Civil defense), Susan Criss (former Texas District Court judge and Waco criminal defense), Dr. Will Dulaney (Ph.D. International Security and qualified expert witness), Frank McIlhaney (Shield of Faith Ministries and Waco AID) and Wade Eldridge (Colorado COC and NCOC attorney). The NCOC chose the 1st Anniversary of Waco to announce a national protest. “The suffering of innocents at the hands of law enforcement and the criminal justice system in Waco is an outrageous example of the motorcycle profiling epidemic. The 1st anniversary of this tragedy is an appropriate time to bring attention to the civil rights deprivations occurring in Waco and the rest of the country.” Mass Arrests, Probable Cause, And Ignoring Foundational

Constitutional Protections A primary message delivered by the NCOC, echoing legal and criminal justice experts around America, related to the blatant civil liberty violations involved in arresting nearly 200 people without any individualized proof or evidence of wrongdoing and issuing identical $1 million punitive bonds. Most were arrested for no other reason than their affiliation with a motorcycle club in blatant violation of fundamental principles like the freedom of association and the doctrine of personal guilt. The NCOC argues, “Video clearly shows the majority of persons present that day running away from a conflict. The majority of those present should have been questioned and released. That’s what normally happens when a violent incident occurs in public. Free societies do not round up and arrest masses of innocent bystanders in hopes of netting the guilty. In a free society, the suffering of one innocent person is supposed to outweigh the public interest in prosecuting the guilty. The ends, as they say, do not justify the means. ” NCOC Challenges Media To Investigate, Not Sensationalize The NCOC, in answer to why the mug shots of those arrested in Waco were rotated 24/7, placed responsibility on the media for intentionally choosing to sensationalize this incident as opposed to performing the investigatory function the news media was intended for. Double D said, “A much better use of the media’s time, as opposed to sensationalism, would be to investigate the many questions that have yet to be answered. Why did law enforcement set up on the perimeter of a well publicized political gathering instead of making a visible presence to prevent something from happening that they thought may happen?” “Instead of protecting and serving people, they shot and killed people”, says Brent Coon. In conclusion, the NCOC vowed to return to Texas every year on the Anniversary of the Waco tragedy until the matter is resolved.

By: Bill Gallaway On Saturday, May 14th, Star members from North and South Carolina gathered in Lexington, SC at Gibson Pond Park. The event was called the 5-Star Event and Picnic. This was the 1st event for the purpose of recognizing the 5 riders from each Chapter with the most miles ridden during the 2015 - 2016 event challenge. The competition begins May 1st each year and at the completion of the challenge, the top five riders with the highest mileage in their Chapter will be counted in the Five Star Event. There were Star members from Lumberton, NC, Sumter, Beaufort, Columbia and Greenville SC. There were 57 bikes and 75 members in attendance. It was a great opportunity to socialize and meet and greet for all in attendance, even if you were not one of the high mileage riders. There were three Chapters with high mileage riders - Beaufort, SC with a total of 61,311 miles, Columbia, SC with a total of 67,549 miles, and Greenville, SC with a total of 69,223 miles. To enter the competition, riders register their starting mileage on May 1st and pay a $10 donation, which goes to the Star Family Foundation. The top mileage award went to Glenn Peifer of Beaufort, SC, who rode 20,420 miles. The award winner shown is Jimmy Watt with 15,924 miles. Not shown was Frank Amino with 18,012 miles. Many thanks go to Reggie Brewer who organized the event and picnic, and everyone else involved in making the event a fun day for all.

Motorfest At Speedway Harley-Davidson

By: Rose and Lloyd In April Aimee at Speedway HarleyDavidson was contacted by Ed Heinz of New Generation Marketing LLC to use their parking lot to do an event around NASCAR to raise money for Autism. Speedway Harley-Davidson jumped on board to help Ed and Jack Martin of Racing Plus. On Friday May 27th the lot was packed. The Patriot Guard, and a Color Guard were there to do the Pledge of Allegiance. There were over 50 legends of NASCAR, some from the Hall of Fame, like Morgan Shepard, Mickey York, Rex White, Bill Blair, Jerry Nadeau, Tim Flock, Waddell Wilson, Bobby Allison, and many more there to meet and sign autographs for the public. The Highlight of the day was when NASCAR driver Kurt Busch arrived to meet fans and sign autographs. The fans formed a line in seconds to get a picture and a minute of his time. There were tables and vans with tons of racing memorabilia, a live auction, and music provided by DJ Gary Walker helped round out the day’s activities. Jackie Turner donated food, and Carl Baily of Speedway Harley-Davidson HOG Chapter did the cooking. Tsunami provided the beer. There was also a car and bike show. It was a beautiful day and the people and employees of the dealership put in a lot of work to make this a success. Many thanks to all the employees and the HOG Chapter for helping make this day a great success, and to raise money for Autism and The Cooperative Christian Ministry.

PGR Mission For C.J. Toney Jr. By: Wally Wersching Claude J. Toney Jr. (CJ) served during WWII in the US Marine Corps after high school when he was only 17 years old. On June 6th, there was a memorial to honor him and his accomplishments. He was 92 years old when he passed. This was an unusual service. CJ wasn’t there - there was no burial. It was supposed to be a celebration of his life for friends and family. It was held at the Veteran’s Point of the Duncan Park in Spartanburg, SC. Many years ago, I used to take my family to Duncan Field to watch the Spartanburg Phillies minor league baseball team. We stopped going when they moved away. Since then, the whole area has turned into a beautiful park where the American Legion holds events, and plays Legion Baseball. They also have a large building for the American Legion Post 200 who supplied the honor guard for the service. They were proud to show off their new uniforms. greet each other. They were very friendly. I was the only one from North Carolina, and also the only one who was a US Navy veteran – mostly were Army and Marine vets. We went over the rules of respect for the way the mission would be conducted. I was not allowed to take any pictures of the flag line. There was talk about somebody posting pictures from a mission on-line in a derogatory manner. I don’t agree with the restrictions because there were a couple photographers taking pictures (and videos) of everybody all during the service. They were members of the Post 200 American Legion Riders – not Patriot Guard Riders. There are always people taking pictures of the PGR in the flag line because it is a patriotic way to honor the departed vet. At first, we lined the walkway to guide the family and friends to the display table, and then their seats. When the service started, we went behind the seats in a semicircle. I was glad that I could hear all the words said during the service. CJ was one of many WWII veterans who went to war for his country, and then came home to live a simple life. He married when he came home, and stayed married for over 60 years. He was a well-respected man in his community. The pastor who held the service then read a poem that was requested by CJ’s family called “Freedom Isn’t Free” by Kelly Strong (https://goo.gl/yOKkxt). It was the first time I had heard it, and was moved by the words and their meanings. The honor guard fired three volleys, and then played taps. They folded the flag that draped the large table, and gave it along with the three expended shells to one of the family members. It was a memorable service, and I was glad that I was there.

TTHD 10th Anniversary Days Of Thunder

By: Kickstart & Donut Things were heating up on June 4 and 5 at Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson as they proudly celebrated their 10th anniversary with a blow out party. We had a blast seeing all the bikers come to celebrate and lots of our friends came out to enjoy the events that were going on. Both days were packed with activities and music. They had a Charity BBQ competition that benefited Homes For Our Troops. The winners were awarded a 1st place prize of $2000 cash and trophy, 2nd place got $1000 cash and trophy, and 3rd place took home $500 cash & trophy. Folks that wished to sample the various styles of BBQ paid $10 for a wristband to sample 2 oz. cups of BBQ and kids under age 12 got to play as well for a $5 wristband for unlimited samples from the 10+ cookers. Music was kicked of with the DJ playing between sets by several bands: Eliminator, Cowboy, Appetite for Destruction, Badcash, Brandon Bailey, and Generation Axe were on the schedule. Thanks to all the vendors and sponsors that helped make this weekend a very successful event. The list of thirty-one vendors was impressive, including food vendors selling BBQ, ribs, wings, hot dogs, and funnel cakes. There were vendors for jewelry, biker gear, LED’s, wheels, boots, several MCs, cigars, tattoos, and t-shirts. The Teresi Dyno Drag Truck was on the lot for anyone to try their reaction time and every now and then you could hear the familiar roar of a Harley powering through the gears. Miss Thunder Tower was also in play for the weekend and they were competing for cash, TTH-D gift cards, and RIDING

Academy certificates. Categories were biker wear and swimsuit with Mr. Gene, Chris, and Kenny (CMP) judging. The center of the Riding Academy lot was cordoned off for periodic performances of the Busted Knuckle Stunt Tour. They put on a V-twin thrill show performed solely on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. They lived up to their motto of burning tires and lighting fires as they raced around the course doing wheelies, jumping over girls laying on the ground, burning rubber, and standing up on their bikes. Let’s not forget the lovely ladies for the bikini bike wash! The Thunder Riders H.O.G. Chapter held a charity poker run and silent auction, “Run, Walk, or Crawl”, that benefited Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter. Then Saturday evening was capped off with a great fireworks show. Another great event on Sunday was the car/bike show. Categories for the bikes were Best Bagger, Best Paint, Best Trike, and Best of Show. The car categories were for Best Classic, Best Import, Best Muscle, Best Paint, and Best of Show with judging by Greg and Corey. Thanks again to all that came out and helped support this great event at Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson. We enjoyed seeing you all. 16th Annual Lincolnton Hog Happenin By: Wally Wersching Every year, the town of Lincolnton closes its streets for a couple days of BBQ, music, and motorcycles. This year it was on June 3rd and 4th. I decided to go on Saturday the 4th. I left home about 8:30AM riding “Miss Vickie” into Shelby. My first stop of the day was at Lilybeans Micro-Roasted Coffee House on the Square to visit with a couple friends in the Broad River European Motor Club. After having a pleasant chat, I headed north on Rt 150. I followed Rt 150 all the way to Lincolnton’s Main Street, and turned left to go into the heart of town. Soon, I came to the roadblock that only allowed motorcycles through. I rode up one block, and parked. There were too many people walking with children. I didn’t want to ride my bike through the crowd. There were many bikers who rode through the crowd. They wanted to be seen or they had a special place they wanted to go. I started walking toward the courthouse. There were many unusual bikes but most were Harleys or Harley wannabes. I did not see any Victory motorcycles. They really stand out in a crowd of Harleys. They were having a bike show, and some of the participants were riding up to park in the show section. I continued walking. I was really looking for Candy and Danny of the Driven by Grace Ministry. I found them walking toward the courthouse too. We had a very pleasant greeting. They are very good friends. Later, I met “Hot Rod” and Mandy. I’ve known “Hot Rod” for almost 30 years. It’s always enjoyable to talk with him, and see how he’s finally maturing. It’s taken him a long time. We all started walking up the street. I visited the Budweiser stage where a Rock n’ Roll band was playing to a small crowd. There weren’t too many people drinking. It was still too early in the day. I’ll bet that later in the evening, the crowds would be large and loud. There were two stages at the event that were far enough apart so that the sounds didn’t overlap. There were food vendors galore. The smell of the food was enough to make you gain a few pounds just by smelling it. People were walking up and down with food in their hands trying not to drop any of it. Everyone was having a great time.

I didn’t see any of the BBQ Cook-Off people. Usually they were around the courthouse. I learned later that they were at the local college instead. I continued, and made a circle around the courthouse, and started walking back toward the bike. There were still bikers riding through the crowd. Some were weaving because they had to go slow around the families walking – not paying attention to the bikes. On the ride home, I stopped in Cherryville, NC to visit with Sandy or Joe at the C. Grier Beam (Carolina Freight) Museum. I always make a stop at the museum every time I pass. Joe was there. We had a very pleasant conversation. I told him I was coming from Lincolnton. He was not aware of the event, and thanked me for the info. He didn’t want to get caught in the traffic if he was going shopping in downtown Lincolnton. I made sure to sign the log. They need to know how many visitors they have. Cindy and I went out for lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning.

The 76th Annual Spring MBBW Runs Smooth As Silk By: Everette “EZ” Short If you missed it, then you missed one hell of a sweet, 10 day long, festival of rides on the beach at the 76th Annual Spring Myrtle Beach Bike Week. The crowds were the biggest in years, but traffic was light and the weather mostly permitted us to travel freely in tee shirts and jeans. On the North end, The Swing Bridge Saloon never missed a beat, from opening day, with a BBQ party, til the last Sunday, with a helluvagood Bloody Mary goodbye sendoff and Boardwalk Billy’s was over the top for food and service at the Doc Holiday Marina, with the waterway sunshine soaking us in good times. Around the corner, Terry, Drew and their crew at Beach Customs still haven’t slowed down with their big wheel custom builds and California Super trike creations, while world famous Scott Britt, who recently opened 17 Customs has been turning bikes out every day that it doesn’t rain since he got there. Bike week may have ended, but up there, it’s an endless summer of riding that has just begun. And did you see the giant tent full of HD’s rolling out of The Harley Shop at the Beach this year? It was crazy up there. In the middle of Myrtle Beach proper, Barnacle Bill’s hosted daily fits of mayhem and madness festivals, with standing room only. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson had the party going on from first light ‘til nightfall, but I remember them staying open later in the past. I think you can once again thank the city fathers for clipping their party wings. Our newest custom shop on the Strand, PPM Customs, was overrun with customers and looked to have almost liquidated their entire inventory of bikes, while service was stacked to the brim. Further down the beach, hidden off old highway #544, Patty’s was packed all day and late into the wee hours and The Rat Hole was absolutely the best bang for the buck with FREE bike games all day and some cool saloon action under the cover of night. Sure there was some rain, and all the runs took it in stride, including the Goat Run, The Loop, The Dog Run, and others, but I have to put out a special thanks to The CVMA Riders of MB for blocking traffic and risking their hides to hold off the caged hordes. In Murrells Inlet, the madness was rampant and parking was scarce. I am not going to tell you that it wasn’t fun, but if you are a fan of butt to nut, standing room only crowds, then this was your place to be. God Bless Joker’s Customs for being there with tires, clutches, parts, and a good mechanic, because the only fatality during the entire rally, that I know of, were several burning tires, smoking clutches and assorted mishaps brought about with deliberate motion. There were a lot of great bikes (most of which cost more than my first house) and a lot of great people who looked to

be having the time of their lives, with nothing but smiles on their faces and drinks in their hands. I can’t tell you everything that happened, but I did enjoy the show from The Flaunt Girls who put on one hell of a display at The Spokes and Bones in Garden City. 2nd Annual Children’s Miracle Network Poker Run By: Rose and Lloyd Month’s ago Melisa, Sherri, and Christy from Sam’s Club in Winston-Salem, NC started the planning for the 2nd Annual Children’s Miracle Network Poker Run. The ride began at Sam’s Club in Winston-Salem on June 4th. The route was a wonderful ride through the country. Approximately 40 bikes and several people were awaiting their arrival at Double D’s Burn Out Saloon in Kernersville. There were raffle prizes given along the way at each stop. There was a $100 award to best hand and $50 to worst hand, a 50/50 and the winner gave the money back to the cause. A huge auction from several items donated by individuals and businesses. A special thanks to Hanes Brands and the Harley-Davidson dealerships for their participation. The auctioneers, Kent and Kim Burwell, kept the crowd well entertained. Music was provided by Madhouse and Carson Mac. Pizza was provided by the Sam’s Club employees. There are so many to thank for their support and participation, Mac Lawson for all the banners, and David and Missy Thompson of Double D’s Burn Out Saloon for opening their establishment for this event. As always these benefits cannot happen without all the people that work so hard behind the scenes and all the individuals and businesses, and of course all the bikers that, once again,

It might not be right now, but even if it has in the last few years, the economy has affected you. So that would make you want to get more bang for your buck and be a bit more savvy and frugal with your hard earned pay check. The thing is you want that great price but you also want quality and dependability. You get everything you need. Overall inspection of the bike, service- oil and filter changed, clutch adjustment, primary chain adjusted, cables lubed, air filter serviced/inspected, spark plugs (inspected replaced as needed), brakes inspected, tires inspected and pressure checked, drive belt inspected/adjusted and testing of the bike. After that you will be notified if you might need any future repairs or if anything has a sense of urgency that needs to be handled right away. Service for a HD non-touring is $122.50. Touring models $133.50. For touring models that price includes all the listed work above with Amsoil engine oil and filter. Service including all the same work plus the transmission, primary and labor for non-touring is $171 and touring $184. From there service charge is based on mileage, your brake and clutch, fluid and fork oil. These fluids are usually ignored and should be flushed or changed. Widow Maker Custom Design & Repair notices that a lot of people have not had their fluids addressed and they are more than happy keep up with your servicing records. 2016 Run To The Sun Motorcycle Rally By: Meredith W. The Southern Cruisers Riding Club held their benefit for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital on Saturday June 4th at Carolina Coast HarleyDavidson in Wilmington, NC. It was a one-day motorcycle rally event including a 50/50 drawing, bike club competition with bike games and cash prizes. Twenty dollars got you an event t-shirt, entry into the dice run, and lunch. There was also a silent auction and I walked away with some nice items including a year gym membership as well as a warm heart knowing that I. and the others in attendance, had supported this cause. The total for the day was over $10,000 and all proceeds went to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Way to go SCRC Chapter 162! Talking with Phillip LiVolsi, the First Officer of the SCRC Port City Chapter 162, I learned that he is one of 117 members of the chapter. I also learned that they are an international organization with approximately 30,000 members and 670 chapters worldwide! St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital was chosen by the organization in 2000 as their national charity and since then they have raised around 2.2 million dollars. Phil and his fellow SCRC members have been holding the benefit in this area since about 2007 and Chapter 162 alone has raised over $56,000! This riding club gets some serious mileage and raises some serious money for an absolutely beautiful cause. And they do it for the children. A special thanks: “The SCRC family would

VFW Post 2573 Memorial Day Observance Ride By: Mary Byrne Wallace The VFW Riders of VFW Manley Reece Long Post 2573 had their Memorial Day Observance Ride on May 29th. The ride was started at 11 am and was escorted by the City of Wilmington Firefighter Station #5 Engine 5. Many from across the Wilmington, NC area, attended it. Riders from the American Guardians, Strength and Honor, Red Knights NC6, and Rolling Thunder NC3 were in attendance. The ride wound through the streets of Wilmington and converged on the Fallen Soldier Memorial at the Wilmington Airport. The occasion had a solemn and respectful tone. While taking in the surroundings, prayers were said for all of our country’s fallen brothers and sisters. Prayers were followed by a moment of silence. A Special Wreath of Remembrance was given to the parents of fallen soldier Sgt. Thomas J Butler IV.

Riders then saddled back up and made their way back over to VFW Post 2573. Awaiting the riders was a gathering of fellow veterans from the VFW who put together a beautiful remembrance for our fallen. The Fury band provided a special music performance. There were raffles, food, and a pie auction. All proceeds went to aiding Wilmington’s Veteran Community. A big THANK YOU to all who attended and participated.

11th Annual Southeast Victory Motorcycle Rally By: Bill Gallaway This year the 11th Annual Victory Motorcycle Rally was again held June 2-5 in Helen, Georgia where it has been for the past 10 years. The first event was held in Perry, Georgia where a group of Victory riders from Florida and Georgia who were members of the Victory Motorcycle Club thought it would be a good idea to get together and meet, greet, have fun, and socialize with those of similar interests. Perry, GA was the central location tor the event. The first rally drew 80 attendees. With the support of dealers and Victory aftermarket accessory manufacturers, the rally has continued to grow by 15 - 20% every year. This year there were over 500 attendees for the 3-day rally. This rally is named the Southeast Victory Rally but I did see license tags from New York, Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia. With the rally being held in Helen, there are some of the finest riding roads in the area. If you were to try a different

route every year, it may take you six years to ride them all, but you will not regret it. After the day of riding, many folks came back to see what the vendors were offering at the many booths. There were many parts for whatever model of Victory you ride. Also, I should mention that the rally is not just for Victory riders; there were also Indians, Harleys, Can-Am Spyders, and one Kawasaki.

Val’s 50th Birthday Party At The Carriage Room By: Uwharrie Charlie The date: June 12, 2016, the time is 3pm. The Will Clark Band is setting up for an outdoor concert for Valerie’s 50th Birthday Party at the Carriage Room, where she is co-owner of the bar and restaurant. Outside some really good frog legs were being deep-fried by her husband, Noodle, with some help from friends and staff. Along with the legs were coleslaw, potato salad, and deserts brought in by friends for everyone to enjoy. It was all very yummy! Thanks to all who contributed with the food. The part that was most amusing was the folk that were eating the frog legs that thought it was from the fish pile. Well, there was no fish pile. Y’all ate frog legs and you liked it! The denial was just way too funny! I am trying to keep up with Val’s movements in order to keep track of the shenanigans but she moves much faster than I do! All looked safe till that really big smack right to the rear

PGR Mission Keeping Promises By: Bill Gallaway On a sunny Sunday, June 12, 2016 with temperatures near 100º F, a group of dedicated riders of the Patriot Guard in North Carolina rode to South Carolina and met up with their counterparts here in Greenville, SC. Their mission that was planned just two weeks prior was to bring closure to some unfinished business from 71 years ago. As I arrived at the staging area, there were a handful of riders gathered in the shade of some huge trees to beat the heat. It wasn’t too long before I met Evan Parton, one of the organizers of this mission from North Carolina where he serves on the Board of Directors of the Tribute to the Troops Organization. As we talked, the riders from the Patriot Guard were pouring in, dismounting, and heading for the shade. It was a long ride from North Carolina on such a hot day; however it was a mission that needed to be done regardless of the weather. Sometime ago, Mrs. Margaret Runion Trammel (now Mrs. Margaret Treadway) suffered a devastating loss – that of her husband, George Edward Trammel, Coxswain, US Navy. In fact, it was 71 years ago. His ship, an LCS, was struck by a Japanese suicide craft and Coxswain Trammel was listed as Missing in Action. A year later, he was declared dead. Again some time ago, she was promised a Gold Star Flag, to honor her status as a Gold Star wife. That promise was never kept – well not until now. The story of this promise was relayed to a member of the North Carolina

Patriot Guard Riders, who was determined to make it come true. This day around 100 concerned individuals - 48 on motorcycles and 6 cages, joined forces to see this promise kept and to prove to this lady and this family that YES, promises are kept and YES, her loss meant something, meant something to the Country and ESPECIALLY TO THE PGR! Believe me, they heard the RUMBLE!! After a short ride to the presentation site there were many flags presented along with plaques, a ceremonial coin, along with many hugs and kind words of our heartfelt gratitude to her and her family. Yes Promises are kept.

Team Amy Benefit Ride

By: Beth Gorman I recently had the opportunity, not only attend a community event, but also participate in and help coordinate the event with other local bike clubs in Rockingham, NC. Corey Shott, President of the Rockingham NC Chapter of the Wingmen MC Nation, contacted other clubs and organizations in the area to put this event together. Amy Faw is married to Bran Faw who is the Postmaster of the Rockingham Post Office. Amy recently was diagnosed with breast cancer and Corey knows them both very well. It isn’t only Corey that knows the Faw family, once the word got out that this benefit was taking place local businesses and other community organizations wanted to help by giving donations, monetary support, and also items for the auction that was to be held at end of the ride. The ride was held on June 5th. The weather forecast included a possible chance of heavy rain and strong storms, but that did not stop more than 60 motorcycles from coming out to support Amy. The ride started in the parking lot of Dunham’s Sports on Broad Avenue and then continued through Hamlet and Rockingham. There was one stop at the Berry Patch off of NC 220 near Ellerbe who also was participating in this benefit. They offered to donate the proceeds from any purchase of their pink ice-cream to the Team Amy benefit. There was some rain once the ride continued back to Rockingham VFW Post 4203. There was great food and good times for all with an auction that was held at end of event. The auction raised $5700! Amy was overwhelmed with the generosity of our motorcyclist community and the Rockingham community as well.

The clubs and organizations that participated included the Ghost Riders MC, Carolina’s Finest MC, Ol’ Skool Tribe RC, Steel Wheels RC, Playaz Elite, and Richmond County CBA/ ABATE. The Rockingham Chapter of the Wingmen Nation MC also gave appreciation plaques to the clubs and organizations who all helped put the ride together including The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, which I graciously accepted. The one thing I can say is that bikers may be stereotyped by many, but this type of community event shows others that we are not a bunch of scary bikers and that our hearts are much bigger then most would know. It was an honor to participate in this benefit.

Anderson Motorcyclist Honored With National Safety Award By: Independent Mail Motorcyclist Ken Higginbotham is one of five honored with the National Guardians of the Ride Award presented by Allstate Insurance Company. The award, which he received because of his education outreach in the community, was presented to him Wednesday afternoon by Allstate Agent Tony Long at the Timms Harley-Davidson Dealership in Anderson, SC. Higginbotham is the Head Road Captain and Safety Officer of the Electric City Harley Owners Group. As Safety Officer, he leads monthly meetings with the owners group to educate them about being safe on the roads. “He’s instrumental in keeping all our members safe,” said Tony Long, Allstate agent and HOG member. “None of our members have been in an accident since Ken has been officer. Ken has our safety at heart.” The Guardians of the Ride is a new initiative by Allstate to promote motorcycle safety and honor safety advocates. “It’s important for us for safety to be on the forefront of our minds,” Higginbotham said as he held his award on stage. “Motorcycles are everywhere, as the saying goes, and people have to be attentive.” Higginbotham will join the four other Guardians of the Ride in August at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota to be recognized for their work. Honor And Remember Ride

By: Johnny Reb I just want to start this article by saying what a great pleasure it is being a contributor to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine representing the biker community in eastern North Carolina. Saturday, June 11th I got up and washed my 2008 Road King AKA the black wasp and headed to Winterville, North Carolina. I arrived at Hometown Harley and was immediately greeted by Tom Moore the representative for Honor And Remember Ride. Tom is a former US Army medic and a great guy. Tom and his wife Kathy have started a chapter of Honor And Remember in honor of their son, Corporal Ryan Russell US Army 1st Cavalry, who was killed in action while serving in Iraq. Honor And Remember (www.HonorAndRemember.org) was started by George Lutz whose son, George Lutz II, was killed by a sniper’s bullet while on patrol in Iraq. The foundation’s goal is to have their flag sanctioned by Congress and the US Military. The flag symbolizes all who have fallen while serving in the military all the way back to the Revolutionary War. I arrived at Hometown Harley-Davidson at 10:30 and immediately found that there was a great bunch of patriotic and caring bikers who were ready to start riding for a great cause. The run was leaving Hometown Harley-Davidson at 12 o’clock and was going to Collier Harley-Davidson in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. There was great weather for the ride and everybody was ready to roll. Collier Harley-Davidson had two bands and plenty of food and drink waiting for the riders

when they arrived. I am sorry that I couldn’t make the ride from Winterville to Roanoke Rapids as I had hand surgery the week before and that throttle hand was still pretty sore! There was a great turnout for this patriotic and deeply meaningful ride. There were plenty of MCs on hand that showed up for the ride with Iron Order MC leading the way. They had the Skeleton Krew at the front. Iron Order VP Troy “Copperhead” Roberson had the sign-up table running smooth and everybody knew where to follow in the pack for the trip to Roanoke Rapids. Iron Order MC wanted everybody to know that their club is made up of around 40% veterans and they were proud to lead the run, however they wanted everybody to know that this was not about them but about the cause of Honor And Remember. The blessing before leaving was conducted by a brother from American Legion Riders Chapter 19. They were on hand to represent the legion and all the great work that they do for veterans. Also in attendance was the local chapter of the Blue Knights MC with President Aaron Lemon leading his brothers who fell in for the run to Roanoke Rapids. There were many independent riders on hand with all kinds of bikes from mild to wild. All in all a great time was had by all, and I only wish I could have completed the ride. Well, this wraps up my first contribution to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and I hope it is just the beginning of a long journey of bike rides and brotherhood that we all enjoy here in eastern North Carolina.

L-R: Moe “Ripper” Clark & Brandi “Skidz” Salley By: Skidz & Ripper On Sunday, June 5th, a poker run and concert were held in Columbia, SC to assist Moe Clark, who cannot afford health insurance, with medical bills resulting from a motorcycle accident. She sustained a severely broken collarbone requiring a stainless steel implant. The day began with breakfast at Red’s on Augusta in West Columbia as riders registered for the poker run with music from Gerry Delgado and Todd/Taylor. Stops included Animals, Double T’s, Nicole’s, JD’s Too, T’s Country Bar, and Bar Of Lexington, with the end of the run at Bunky’s Tavern in Sandy Run, where riders were greeted with chicken dinners and five more bands, including lowercase gods, Turbo Gatto, Wisker Friktion, Chalkline, and an acoustic set from Glass Mansions. Also at Bunky’s, there were several items raffled off, ranging from spa services and gym memberships to motorcycle maintenance packages and parts. An auction was held for a beautiful Harley-Davidson mirror and a baseball signed by Joey Pankake, who was a national title winning USC baseball player. Tee shirts and koozies were available for purchase. Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Firm was on hand to give generously to the cause, which Moe plans on using to help other riders get by when they need help. She says, “The funds raised are merely a drop in the bucket toward my massive bills, and I have been shown so much kindness, that I would like to pay it forward. I am working with Bikers of South Carolina to help people who get into my kind of situation. You’re not as worried about the hospital bills pouring in as much as you are about how you’re going to get by while you’re out of work recovering.” She adds, “This is what it should be about - helping each other in our times of need. I’m glad everyone had a great time, and I cannot thank everyone enough for their support.”

Children’s Miracle Network Benefit By: Caroline I had the opportunity to meet the folks that put together this event on June 4. This is the second year that Sam’s Club in Winston-Salem has volunteered their time and energy to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Locally, that would benefit Children’s Network hospitals such as Duke and the UNC hospital system. As everyone knows, medical care is very costly, and can be a tremendous burden on families. One in 10 children in North America are treated at a Children’s Network hospital each year. These funds go towards treatment, healthcare services, and medical equipment. Riders this year were treated to an amazing musical talent, Carson Mac. Later on, the riders met at Double D’s Burnout Saloon in Kernersville for some food, fun and entertainment by Madhouse. Proceeds from this year’s ride will be added to the donations generated statewide to benefit children who are patients at partner hospitals across the state. Smokin’ H-D 7th Anniversary Celebration

By: Caroline Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC was jam packed on May 21 with folks just hoping they would take home a brand new 2016 Harley-Davidson Softail. Of course there were plenty of other things to do right up to the drawing. There were vendors, hotdogs courtesy of the Winston-Salem HOG Chapter, and all the great folks from Rock 92 were there to add to the excitement. There was also a great local group, Jack Of Clubs providing musical entertainment. The folks from Rock 92 helped out with the drawing and sale of tickets and at 1:00 the time had come to begin the drawing. A huge crowd of ticket holders surrounded the stage area where Chris Demm, Biggie, Weather Dave, and Lauren, started drawing and calling out names. You see, this was a little different from your regular drawing, it was a reverse drawing. By time we got closer to the last tickets, the crowd had dwindled down and the tension level was sky high. Then the last 10 names called would get a key and to see if their key started the bike. I guess there was no one more surprised than Craig Wilson of Greensboro, when his name was called and his key started the bike. I know that he was beaming from ear to ear, and I thought I heard him say something about being at the rallies this year! Congratulations Craig and to all the folks at Smokin’ HarleyDavidson for letting us share in a great 7th Anniversary celebration.

6th Annual Milling Manor Poker Run By: Uwharrie Charlie I have met some very interesting folk down at Tamarac Marina & Grill over the years and some of them have stories of love and charity, which brings me to this benefit charity ride. Diane Wallace is one of those folk. While sitting on the deck having some food and refreshments I began to hear what Diane was telling to others about the special needs individuals and folks at Milling Manor. The fact that she was helping to organize a poker run for this establishment interested me very much. It became clear that I wanted to help out in whatever way to spread the word for this very worthy cause. Milling Manor is dedicated to strengthening and developing the lives of special people and is a non-profit agency. Diane is quoted as saying “This started as a memorial to my daughter’s father, Mike Wallace, and has grown. One year we lost a client and it was in her memory. Just the love of each other and the clients of Milling Manor have always made it possible. This and other fundraisers not only make this a house for these folks, but it makes it a home to them and all who enter the doors of this home. The ride this year was staged at the shopping strip where Beach N Tans is located on Highway 601 (935 S. Salisbury St.) in Mocksville, NC. Although we arrived early there were already many motorcycles in the parking lot. The event was set up nicely and had doughnuts and beverages on hand in case you skipped breakfast and had seating under canopies due to the heat that day. The ride was held Saturday June 4th so look for it next year and join in the celebration! There was food waiting for us after the ride, prizes for best and worst hand, entertainment by DJ Tina Crews, with special guests Patsy Cline and Elvis! A very nice table and chairs was given away along with a nice Carolina Panther Corn Hole board set. C.H.A.N.C.E Annual Benefit Ride 2016 By: Kickstart & Donut April 30, 2016 was a great day for bikers and friend to gather around at South Lake Saloon in Redbank, SC. The timing was perfect with Mother Nature. This was the 4th C.H.A.N.C.E. (Crusaders Helping Abused and Neglected, Children Everywhere) event they put on in 2 years, but it also was the 2nd event to help the Nancy K. Perry Children’s Shelter. Monetary prizes were donated from local sponsors, which include David Brazell, Tony Culpepper, Jordin Shakespears, Tommy Campbell Heating And Air, and Elite Fencing. Registration started at 11a.m. with KSU at 12 pm, LBI at 5pm. It was a successful event with over 70 registered riders. ride. It was a beautiful ride rolling by on the two lane county roads. Fifty miles rolled off pretty smoothly and we pulled into Rider’s In The Country in Randleman and were greeted by vendors and a spread of food. The riders pulled their cards for the poker hand, got a cold drink and secured their tables for the rest of the event. The Good Ole Boys were cranking out some hits, and I’m telling you, they really do a great job! Hot dogs, hamburgers, and all the fixin’s were hot and ready. After we had a bite and the band played a set. Tim announced the 50/50 winner, Best & Worst hand, and got the auction going. There was a pile of great auction items including a table full of Case knives, framed prints from local artist Blake Henkel, CCL class certificates, and some other great items. At the end of the day the Seth Nall Memorial Scholarship Fund had raised over $6000 to help Trinity High School graduates take the next step in their education, and to keep Seth Nall’s memory alive. By: Buzz There are times in life that tragedy strikes. When it does, we all have to make a decision on how to carry on. When Seth Nall’s life was tragically taken away, Casey, one of Seth’s friends, approached Seth’s dad about carrying on Seth’s memory through a Memorial Scholarship for Trinity High School seniors. Tim Nall, Seth’s dad, accepted the challenge and one way to raise money for the scholarship was through Seth and Tim’s mutual love of riding motorcycles. On June 4th, riders for the 5th Annual Seth Nall Memorial Ride gathered at Mount Vernon UMC in Trinity, NC. There was a beautiful Carolina blue sky that day and bikes filled the church parking lot. The registration was buzzing with activity signing up riders and selling shirt, 50/50 tickets, and spreading love and fellowship to everyone who attended. The Pink Cares Piedmont Fire Truck was also in attendance adorned with signatures and messages of hope for survivors and those who have lost their battle with breast cancer. When registration was over we hopped on our bikes and headed out on a police escorted tour of the local countryside. Tim brought along a small urn with some of Seth’s ashes in it, so he could be with us on the

Small Town, Big Heart - Angier Bikefest By: Star Munsey Angier Bikefest was a two-wheeled display of big heart, in classic small town America. Before I relocated to North Carolina, I conducted extensive on-line research regarding small towns in North Carolina, looking for areas I would want to live in or visit. That was the first time I learned of Angier’s Bikefest. The online photos hinted of a quaint town that still preserved the buildings and soul of its old fashioned downtown. I was drawn to the streets lined with shops, restaurants, and lots of history. I love that, and when I also saw photos of motorcycle-lined roads from their “Bikefest” I was intrigued. I knew it would be a place I must go, and an event I must attend. On June 4th, the day came when I finally attended my first year Angier Bikefest, but it will not be my last. I attend a lot of these types of events. This one was a perfect balance of bikerfriendly activities and family-friendly attraction, which led me to hours of smiles as I milled about. The streets were lined with a wide variety of motorcycles, and their owners. I was fortunate enough to find a parking spot next to a Russian 2012 Ural with a sidecar, which seemed to stop crowds all day. The owner took his time to share with me the perks of Ural ownership, and tell me tales of his adventures and even errands he has run on this beauty. He was the first of many owners that day that were kind enough to tell me all about their motorcycles, the adventures they had on them and more. I made my way over to the bike show, which contained everything from your classic cruiser, to trikes, custom rides, and antique treasures. There was a respectable variety, and a lighthearted competition between owners. I took my time walking through this part, which was almost as fun as walking through a museum thanks to the owners that ensured their bikes were worthy of display. They were full of personal touches like etched windshields, custom paint, impressive engines, and creative designs. The best were selected as “winners” and given plaques by mid-afternoon. A point of pride for the owners, I am sure! The sounds of Southern Grace wafted through the square, and drew me across the street to the park where there were vendors and festivities for all. It seems like the best biker events here have this type of band rocking out with country tunes, keeping the crowds happy. It was great to hear their All American “downhome” tunes as I checked out all the goodies I could (and did) buy like T-shirts, jewelry, accessories, and southern food! I also spotted a barbeque competition going on. An entire section was devoted just to these chefs and their variety of culinary delights. Although it all fell in one category of “Barbeque” there was enough variety to suit the preference of just

about anybody in the crowd. If you needed something to cool your taste buds from the barbeque or from this 90º day, the organizers thought of that, too! You had your choice of Snow Cones or a huge variety of drinks and delights to keep you cool. After a few short conversations, I noticed the vendors ran the full spectrum of diversity from the businessman, to the local church group, some charities, and chapters of local clubs. I enjoyed taking it all in, watching everyone enjoying it in their own way. I saw the classic leather-wearing bikers riding in and out together, interwoven with giggling kids playing in the fountain, people holding up wares they considered purchasing, some people sitting in the shade, or singing to the tunes from the band. There were countless friendly people who were all-too happy to chat with each other and me about the town, their advice on other events to attend, tips on rides to take, and more as we enjoyed the

day together. The people were kind, and open – ready to share their bikes, their experiences, and their world with me. As much as I love motorcycles, the people and setting of this event are equally worth the effort to attend. Angier Bikefest is a treasure, where you can soak in some sun, meet new and old friends, see some great motorcycles of all shapes and sizes, all while enjoying small-town American goodness.

A crusty old Marine Sergeant Major found himself at a gala event hosted by a local liberal arts college. There was no shortage of extremely young idealistic ladies in attendance, one of whom approached the Sergeant Major for conversation. “Excuse me, Sergeant Major, but you seem to be a very serious man. Is something bothering you?” “Negative, ma’am. Just serious by nature.” The young lady looked at his awards and decorations and said, “It looks like you have seen a lot of action.” “Yes, ma’am, a lot of action.” The young lady, tiring of trying to start up a conversation, said, “You know, you should lighten up. Relax and enjoy yourself.” The Sergeant Major just stared at her in his serious manner. Finally the young lady said, “You know, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but when is the last time you had sex?” “1955, ma’am.” “Well, there you are. No wonder you’re so serious. You really need to chill out! I mean, no sex since 1955! She took his hand and led him to a private room where she proceeded to “relax” him several times. Afterwards, panting for breath, she leaned against his bare chest and said, “Wow, you sure didn’t forget much since 1955.” After glancing at his watch, The Sergeant Major said, “I hope not; it’s only 2130 now.”

Three guys are sitting in the sports bar window seats, idly chatting and watching the front door of the brothel across the road. They see the local Baptist pastor appear, knock on the door and quickly go inside. “Would you look at that!” exclaims one of the guys. “Didn’t I always say what a bunch of hypocrites those Baptists are?” No sooner are the words out of his mouth than a Rabbi appears at the brothel door, knocks, and also disappears inside. The other guy says “Another one trying to fool everyone with pious preaching and silly hats!” They continue drinking while roundly condemning the vicar and the rabbi when they see their local Catholic priest knock on the brothel door. “Ah, now that’s sad,” says the third guy, “One of the girls must have died.”

An officer assigned to a lonely stretch of highway cam upon the scene of an obvious hit and run. There in the middle of the road was a local biker known for his extramarital activities. His bike was a twisted heap and the biker was pretty banged up, but alive. The cop asked the biker if he got the license plate of the vehicle that hit him. “No,” Joe grunted painfully, “But I’d know my old lady’s laugh anywhere!”

A panda walks into a bar and gobbles some beer nuts. Then he pulls out a gun, fires it in the air, and heads for the door. “Hey!” shouts the bartender, but the panda yells back, “I’m a panda. Eats shoots and leaves.’ After spending all day putting up with long lines, rude clerks and insane regulations at the Department of Motor Vehicles, I stopped at a sporting goods store to pick up a birthday present for my son. I brought my selection – a baseball bat – to the cash register. “Cash or charge?” the clerk asked. “Cash!” I snapped. Then apologizing for my attitude, I explained, I just spent all day at the DMV. The clerk asked sheepishly, “ Shall I gift wrap the bat, or are you going back there?” One day, out on the fairway John accidentally overturned his golf cart. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived

Third Annual Allison Hunt Memorial Scholarship Ride By: Rose and Lloyd May 7th was the Third Annual Allison Hunt Memorial Scholarship Ride. Larry and Tamara Hunt as a lasting Memorial of their daughter, Allison Hunt, put this ride on every year at Ledford High School. Many friends and sponsors help to make this event possible. Allison was born prematurely on October 24, 1994. She lived a perfectly normal life until the age of 12 when she was diagnosed with Bronchiolitis Obliterate, an irreversible lung disease. In January 2011 she received a lung transplant. That April a virus took over her body and she lost her battle July 18, 2011. Larry and Tamara wanted to keep her memory alive forever so they started a scholarship fund for seniors at Ledford High School. To be eligible each person applying had to present an essay about an adversity that they have or are having to overcome. May 7th was a beautiful day for the event. There was a nice ride through the country and back to Ledford High School for food, entertainment, and an auction. DJ Tommy Hodges provided music, and the auctioneer was Mark Connor. The day and ride was great, but the wonderful part of Allison’s memory is how this scholarship fund has helped young people accomplish their dreams. In 2012, the scholarship was awarded to Felicia Ford; she attended University of Mount Olive, graduating May 7th, with a Bachelors in Criminology, and Minor in Spanish. In 2013, the scholarship was awarded to Dallas Barrier, who is attending East Carolina. In 2014, Mary Davis attending UNC in Greensboro, and

In 2015, Bridget Lucas attending UNC in Greensboro, and Taylor Kuibrand attending Western Carolina, and Kinsley White attending Davidson County Community College were the recipients. I was honored this year to be able to attend the Scholarship Ceremony. The recipients were Shawna McLaggan attending UNC Charlotte, Olivia Faris, attending UNC Wilmington, and Jane Coats attending Wingate University. After Tamara explained the scholarship and the awards were presented there was hardly a dry eye there. With dedication of Larry and Tamara Hunt and many friends and fellow bikers the availability to help more each year has been possible. The people that work so hard, and all the bikers that ride every year, take a minute and think of what a difference you have already been a part of to change and help provide a good education and future to ten young adults. Carolina Faith Riders Bike Night By: Wally Wersching The Carolina Faith Riders sponsor a Bike Night at the Forest City, NC Sonic restaurant every Tuesday evening. I went to one and had a very pleasant time. The people there are very friendly, and the food is pretty good, too. I looked around as I pulled in, and saw a few bikes already parked. After I parked, I started to visit with the people who were there. I gave out a couple copies of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines. More bikes pulled in, and before I knew it, the tables were full. I met a few friends from last year’s Bike Nights along with Mike, the president of the CFR. We had a very pleasant talk about a little of everything but mostly motorcycles. I talked with Doug for a while. His son was my professor when I took a writing class at the local community college. It’s always good to see old friends. I met another friend who happens to ride a 2012 Victory Kingpin. We always seem to bump into each other at local bike events. We are the only Victory owners in the crowds. He just had a serious heart operation. I was glad to see him

riding his bike again. He’s too young to have all those health problems. I enjoy watching the bikes pull in, and then go talk to the rider about his bike – especially if the bike is unusual. I left for home about 6:45. The ride home was refreshingly cool. I made it home in time to walk the dog. It was a great way to spend an evening with friends. I will do it again soon.

Power Of Persistency And Numbers Rolling Thunder 2016 By: Star Munsey “America’s POW/ MIA’s will never die until they are forgotten.” (Rolling Thunder). Sometimes, it feels like the world has gone crazy, and things are out of control – especially when it comes to our government. So, what is an every-day citizen supposed to do when they know something isn’t right, and that something needs to change? The organizers of Rolling Thunder have shown us the answer: be persistent in your cause, and remember that there is power in numbers. This event/ride started in 1988 with about 2500 participants, since then they have persistently held an annual demonstration/ride around the National Mall and past the Capital building in Washington, DC with the intent to publicize the POWMIA issue, as well as educate the public that many American Prisoners of War were left behind after all previous wars. The goal of this event is to help correct the past and protect the future Veterans from also being left behind. This ride is a demonstration to let our elected officials know that they have not forgotten our POW-MIA’s, and that they will not just go away. Since that first demonstration/ride, the event has grown and evolved beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Now, in addition to the original mission, it has also become known as a tribute to American War Heroes; an emotional display of patriotism and respect for those who defend our county. Not only has the purpose and meaning grown, but also the numbers of participants has grown to the point where this is now THE world’s largest single day motorcycle event. On Memorial Day weekend, they held their 29th annual Ride For Freedom, where over a million riders and spectators descended upon the Nation’s capital. Early Sunday morning, the riders began to congregate in the parking lots of the Pentagon. Hundreds of thousands of bikers filled up all the parking lots around the Pentagon. At noon, the riders began their slow journey from the Pentagon through the spectator-lined streets of Washington, DC to the National Mall. There were so many participants that it took about four hours for all the riders to make this 15-minute emotional journey. I was fortunate enough to be one of the participants in this

year’s Ride To The Wall. It was similar to the event I attended in years past in many ways. This year, I found the same energy, dedication, and passion from the attendees. There was the expected sea of motorcycles filling the parking lots, the unforgettable roar of the engines as the sheer volume of riders exit the staging area and weave through the streets, and I found the streets along the route lined as much as ever with patriotic Americans waving flags, cheering, and holding signs saying things like “Thank you” and “God Bless Our Troops”. Though the actual ride is about 15 minutes, it creates a lifetime of memories, and inspiration. If you wonder, “Is patriotism is alive and well?” attend this ride and your faith will be revived as you ride past people of all ages and walks of life cheering on the demonstration/riders. If ever you wonder, “Can what I do really influence the government?” attend this ride and you will be reminded that as one person you may not be heard, but when we come together with a united voice that there is power in numbers and with persistence, and we can get things done. Changes involving government don’t usually happen quickly. But the men and women of Rolling Thunder and their supporters have shown a dedication to their cause, and to our Veterans that is unwavering, powerful, and effective. For 29 years they have held this demonstration/ride, and maintained a constant vigil seeking accountability and appreciation for our Veterans. National Government and Veterans Affairs committee working with Congress, Veterans, and other organizations. If you want to feel like you are a part of something bigger than yourself, and if you want to know your presence will make a difference, this is the event to attend annually. Whether Washington, DC is a few hours of riding away (like it is for me), or whether it is several days away (like it was for my friends that joined me from Florida) I promise it is worth the trip; it will be a weekend you will always remember. If you attend, in addition to the great memories, you will also know that you have made a permanent difference. The next time you hear about an important piece of legislation passing that helps our Veterans, attendees also know they

helped it along by being part of the voice that tells America, “Never Forget.”

By: Wiley Burrus Josh Pardue. That’s a name you would have heard a lot of if not for a tragic accident last December. Josh lost his life in a motorcycle accident December 26, on the way to Daytona with a bunch of his HOG chapter members. Members of the Statesville, NC, HOG Chapter #3548 honored Josh and his family Saturday, June 4 with a LIVIN’ LARGE FOR JOSH PARDUE poker run At Tilley H-D. LIVIN’ LARGE, because that’s what Josh was all about, living life to the fullest. And education. That’s one thing that Josh was working hard for, getting a good education for his three boys, Ethan, Daniel, and Levi. In fact, he was so dedicated to education that he was running for the school board when the accident happened. The main purpose of this poker run was to raise money for the education of his boys. The money will be put into an escrow account to grow and help the boys gain the education he wanted

for them. Participants in the poker run got a tee shirt and a meal and a chance to win some great prizes when they returned to Tilley Harley-Davidson. There were drawings, door prizes and games. It turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far, but there was a good turnout for the event. The quest for the best hand was close at the end. A couple of straights came in and then a flush, a potential winner, and then another possible flush. The suspense was thick, and then the last card was drawn. No! Missed the last card! The low hand was a nine high. Everyone seemed to have a good time and some prizes were won. Everyone was fed, and an education fund was begun. All in all, it was a good day to remember a friend.

Military Through The Ages By: Wally Wersching Over the Memorial Day weekend, the Kings Mountain National Military Park hosts a “Military through the Ages” exhibit. I went last year, and thoroughly enjoyed the demonstrations. The event’s hours were from 9:00AM to 5:00PM both Saturday, and Sunday. The Kings Mountain National Military Park is on the site of the Battle of Kings Mountain that happened during the Revolutionary War. There’s a small museum, and a hiking trail that goes around the battlefield. In the woods near the trail is where the “Military through the Ages” volunteers set up their tents. I arrived a little before 10AM on Saturday. I was told that there would be weapons demonstrations starting at 11AM, so I had time to visit with the volunteers. I met a man with a video camera on a tripod. He was from WTVI – the PBS station in Charlotte, NC. We had a very pleasant talk. He was out making a documentary for the station. I had a few copies of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. In it was my article about Dewey Gossett – the WWII pilot who was just buried last month. He was MIA since 1943. I gave copies to the WWII re-enactors to read. They really enjoyed it. By now the Confederate soldiers were up drilling and practicing their tactics. They were very serious about their duties. All the volunteers were serious about bringing their stories to the visitors. The weapons demonstrations started at 11AM. There was a huge crowd of spectators watching and listening to the men

describe how it was during their specific conflict. They started with the Revolutionary War, and ended with the Vietnam War. It was interesting to hear the automatic weapons firing. Later in the day, they would fire a cannon. I didn’t stay for that. I’ve seen it before. No matter how I try, I still jump when it fires and the picture is blurry. I left, and headed back. It was a perfect way to spend a Sunday morning. I will definitely go back again next Memorial Day weekend.

Trust Your GPS? Hello brothers and sisters, I hope you are getting in a lot of riding in this summer season. When we mount up for a ride, we sometimes have nowhere to go. No time frame to maintain or particular destination to reach, that’s a part of the freedom of the motoring lifestyle. Other times we need to get to a destination on time and as quick as possible. Now, I’m sure most all of us have a GPS. If not a stand-alone unit, perhaps on a cell phone. Now, I do field service work, so going to different job sites daily is the norm. My GPS is one of the most important tools. However, sometimes it will take you down a pig path, dead end, or just repeat “re-calculating” until you turn it off. It will take you places you don’t always want to go. Life is a journey as well. Sometimes we need direction. There’s another GPS system I would like to tell you about. “God’s Perfect Son.” When life’s road gets confusing or becomes a dead end, you can call out to Jesus! He will set you on the correct path. Also reading His Word and attending a place of worship with true believers will keep you on the correct road. And if you do make a wrong turn, Jesus is there to forgive and set you on the path “He” has chosen for us. Sometimes we may go down a road we don’t understand, but he will not leave us or forsake us, and he will never lead us down a dead end. So make heaven your final destination.

Let the Lord guide you down the road of life till you reach it. Enjoy the ride, be careful, and remember when all else fails try Jesus. He is the real deal.

7th Annual AMCA Southern National Meet By: Alan Dockery For seven years I’ve attended the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Southern National Meet. I watched it grow into one of the best gatherings of old motorcycles in the country. Despite some wet weather Friday, it was great to see lots of y’all at Denton Farm Park, NC, the middle of May supporting this fun meet. Saturday was perfect weather to ride over and join us for the day. The three sponsoring AMCA chapters; Blue Ridge, Dixie, and Catawba Valley picked the perfect place to let y’all see, hear, touch, and smell the history of motorcycling. Not only were there lots of cool old bikes to check out, but there were plenty of bikes and parts for sale, too. Denton Farm Park enhances the antique experience with several old buildings featuring historical equipment and machinery, plus antique train rides. The AMCA meet is mainly a Friday and Saturday event. For y’all who want to check out the meet and activities you can ride in Saturday morning. Sunday is when they judge the bikes seeking national recognition. The oldest was a 1913 restored “Pope”, There was also a 1919 restored H-D. The newest was a 1979 Honda and various makes and models in-between. The most unique was a 1951 WL”J” which is very rare. Long Distance riders to the meet where Richard Watson on an Indian from Michigan at 637 miles, Liz Vickery from Florida on a H-D at 600 miles, and Scotty Murnan on a 1947 H-D “45” at 550 miles. As more folks learn about Denton, the crowd that comes to camp and enjoy the whole weekend grows. That gives them more time to check out the vendors and get ahead of the Saturday shoppers. Camping at Denton Farm Park is nice with acres of cool, shady woods and permanent restroom facilities. And you can get a big ole fried bologna sandwich, a sweet potato fried pie, and Cheerwine for lunch. It’s great to see friends and tell stories about old motorcycles

and rides, but folks came to buy and sell bikes and parts. So what, you can buy everything online these days. A real swap meet still has its advantages. Online you hope the part is what they claim and what you need. Buying in person at Denton you can examine the part, haggle with the seller, and sometimes get an interesting story, too. Bob Aton, Meet Chairman, says people love coming to North Carolina and often brag about our meet. “I continue to hear from members across the country that this is their favorite meet. They enjoy a laid back meet and appreciate our Southern hospitality,” he said. “People like the cool, shady Denton Farm Park, too.” Saturday’s activities started with the Antique Bike Road Run through the beautiful Carolina countryside. One of the coolest features of the AMCA Southern National Meet is the History In Motion narrated parade of antique motorcycles. Riders line up and wait their turn to pull up to a spot, surrounded by folks, while each bike is described. This is so much better than just a bike show. The narrator tells us who is riding what, but often the rider takes the microphone and gives more details and stories about their machine. Each year has a theme and bikes of that type on display. This year’s theme was service bikes featuring machines used by the military and police. Saturday was Armed Forces Day, so it was nice for this old GI to see the bikes and support AMCA member’s show for us. This year, John Landstrom, owner of Blue Moon Cycles, Norcross, GA, narrated the parade and did a great job telling us about the old bikes. Blue Moon Cycles caters to Vintage motorcycles and has a room dedicated to military motorcycles. John and the shop were featured in an “American Pickers” episode when a Zundapp KS 750 military motorcycle with sidecar was purchased for the shop in Europe. After lunch the crowd moved to the field games area. You

should have seen the guys and gals competing on old bikes with foot clutches and hand shifters. It was amazing how well some can ride those old machines. Bike Game Winners were as follows. Driver’s License Test: 1st Place - Chad Trayner, 2nd Place - Doc Fox. Place The Ball: 1st Place - Luke Hefner, 2nd Place - Ramsey Allen. Hoop Toss: 1st Place - Ramsey Allen, 2nd Place - Chad Trayner. Ride The Rail: 1st Place Chad Trayner, 2nd Place - Mark Riehle. Slow Race: 1st Place - Ramsey Allen, 2nd Place - Richard Watson. Once the field was clear, bikes pulled in for the Concourse D’Ordinaire, a bike show for the common bike. Any bike could enter as long as it was old and it ran. This is a cool little show with awards for things like Least Chrome, Most Rustic, Least Paint, Most Cobbled, Most Sordid. After a great meal of BBQ and chicken from BBQ Joes, John Landstrom of Blue Moon Cycle was the speaker at the AMCA’s 7th Annual Southern National Banquet. The theme of this year’s meet was military and service bikes. John’s topic was military motorcycles and he possesses a tremendous amount of knowledge in this area. He discussed mainly WWI and WWII motorcycles. The WWII Allied motorcycle production numbers were very surprising because you would think that Indian (30,000) and Harley-Davidson (88,000) would be at the top of bikes produced, but they trailed Norton (100,000) and BSA (125,000). John also discussed Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycle companies using captured enemy bikes as patterns to build shaft driven bikes to better handle the harsh desert conditions of the war. The slide presentation was very informative and entertaining. The AMCA Southern National meet is the Carolinas’ event you must attend if you are into the history of motorcycles. Bikers can check out historic machines and spend hours talking to the guys who saved and restored them. You will see some of the oldest motorcycles running and rideable. You can buy bikes and parts to start your own project. Motorcycles 35 years old are considered antiques. That now includes the imports many of us grew up riding. Yes, there are lots of Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, Nortons, and the bikes we are used to seeing at antique meets. But the Japanese bikes and parts vendors are increasing, too. Many of us have fond memories of those machines. The AMCA Southern National meet is not a snobby gathering of guys with high-dollar antiques. It is for you and that clean old machine you found in a shed or the ratty project bike you’d rather ride than restore. The 2017 theme will be Indians. I’m looking forward to lots of beautiful machines from the old Springfield factory. Come join us next year at Denton. 2nd Annual Officer Down Memorial Ride By: Meredith W. On Saturday April 23rd the 2nd Annual Officer Down Memorial Ride took place between Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson and Beach House HarleyDavidson. The Blue Knights NC17 sponsors the benefit. Registration began at CCHD at 9 a.m. and KSU was 11 a.m. The Sheriff’s Department as well as the State Highway Patrol escorted the ride down the highway to BHHD. Once the long trail of about 200 bikes arrived and everyone parked, Beach House was a buzz with everyone looking at their large showroom of

brand new, pre-owned Harley’s as well as their selection of men’s and women’s MotorClothes apparel. It wasn’t long before everyone got in line for some delicious BBQ, chicken, and slaw which is the regular delicious choice for this ride. After bellies were full the President of the Blue Knights began the drawing for raffle prizes and the 50/50. One gentleman was lucky and walked away with his hands full after holding 3 winning tickets. Overall it was a nice time but the tone remained steady, as all proceeds were to benefit the area law enforcement officers. Thank you from the Blue Knights to Carolina Coast HD and Beach House HD for hosting and all who showed support. By: Rose and Lloyd On May 30th, The Carolina Field Of Honor at Triad Park in Kernersville held a very heart felt ceremony to honor all veterans, the ones that gave their all, and the hundreds that attended. If you have not been to The Carolina Field of Honor it was seven years in the developing by retired veterans that want to have a place in the Triad to honor all Veterans. It was the brainstorm of the late Richard “Rich” Brenner, and William “Bill “Moss, Danny Bracken, Rob O’Hanlon, Scott Matthews, George Orfanedes, and William Knight. Plus a Committee determined to make this dream a Monument. The land was donated by the cities of Kernersville and Greensboro, and so the dream began. Ground Breaking Ceremony was September 25, 2013. The dedication of the first phase was May 31, 2014. On May 30th, A Memorial Day Ceremony was held. There were hundreds of Veterans and families there to show their respect for the men and women that gave their all. The Ceremony included Bag Pipes

from Jamestown Pipes & Drums. Presentation of colors by The U.S. Marine Corps, Pledge of Allegiance by Rob O’Hanlon, with wreath presentation, and roses placed at the foot of each monument for each branch of service. There were several guest speakers and special music Daryl Duff. The ceremony ended with the playing of Taps by Detachment 260 US Marine Corps. With the fact that Lloyd and his two sons, having served their country, Lloyd as a veteran of the Air Force, one son a veteran of the Army, and one son now serving in Air Force, it always means so much to see and be a part of the people that recognize and honor the men and women that have proudly served to protect our freedom. So when you see a Veteran, thank them for your freedom. And remember, Freedom isn’t free. Memorial Day is a reminder, in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, of the cost of freedom.
