Cyclemania 2018 All Kinds Of Cool Bikes

Story and photo by Alan Dockery The first Saturday afternoon in June was a treat for those of us who love all kinds of motorcycles and the people who ride them. Gathered on the East side of Charlotte for Cyclemania 2018, were bikes of many kinds from Aprilia to Zundapp, from Japan to Czechoslovakia. Yes, I love them all from sexy Italian bikes to sturdy German machines. Cyclemania raises money to benefit the Disability Rights and Resources organization. They blocked off the back of a business park for Cyclemania. It makes a nice place for bikers to hangout for a few hours. It has good parking with strips of grass and shade trees. The Cyclemania organizers are bikers and welcome everyone and admission is free. They had vendors ranging from big dealerships to small shops and other motorcycle related products such as guys with old parts and handmade items bikers might need. Good food plus cold beer and sodas were available.

Charlotte’s Classic Rock station 99.7 The Fox was on site. There was a dyno trailer for guys who wanted to see if those new pipes really made power. Several vendors from new motorcycle dealerships were on the scene. Checking out bikes and talking to riders is what makes Cyclemania fun for me. I saw some of my old hardcore biker buddies there and talked to young hipster riders, too. The scooter crew brought some interesting machines. It’s cool how two wheels can bring the tough guys and frail ladies together discussing details of an old machine. And there were a few old machines there I’d love to have in my garage. Check out the extra photos on www.FullThrottleMagazine.com. Customizing motorcycles has always had the rule – Do what you like and want to ride. So, you see some funky things once in a while. No, I did not get to talk to the folks who rode in on the custom BMW’s. I do not know the story on the Bultaco bodywork on a BMW. I pulled a couple bikes to the side to photograph for future stories. One is an old AJS flat track racer. The owner has ridden the bike since he was a kid and still races it. He brought to the show with fresh Georgia red clay still on it. Possibly the coolest machine in the lot was an old Honda Trail 70. It has a new 140cc motor, inverted forks and boxed swingarm. “Cyclemania 2018 was the best ever!” said Tom Haselden, Director of Development Disability Rights & Resources, Cyclemania event coordinator and avid biker. “In its seventh year, we exceeded last year’s event with the most dealerships, best crowd, great vendors and a super number of vintage and retro motorcycles entered in the show. Roosters Enjoy Mountain Riding Story and photo by Alan Dockery It’s been a wet, spring across the Carolinas, so I know many of y’all are eager for a few days of Creek Time at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC. The Memorial Day Weekend Anniversary Party usually gets the season into second gear and rolling. The folks who made the party had a good time hanging out and catching a bunch of bass and trout. Riders’ Roost has always had so much to offer for bikers who either want to lay in the creek all day or go ride. I know three ways to get to the Blue Ridge Parkway from there. One is scary and either you love it or cuss me out when we get to the top. Well, the owners have found a cool road nearby that I really dig. They have laid out a route and given it a name. The Cock’s Comb. When looked at on a map, it looks like the comb on a rooster’s head. The ride is several miles of lazy country road then you get to the comb.

For several miles the road hugs the side of a mountain. There are very few people living there so there are very few driveways or intersections, just a nice curvy road. No, I ain’t gonna tell the name of the mountain nor road. You gotta go to Riders’ Roost to find out. Besides I don’t remember! I just ride around up there from the landmarks I think I remember. Turn where the little red barn used to be and go past that field where they cut down the big oak tree. Yes, I have a reputation for being almost lost sometimes. But every road near The Roost is fun. I’m just taking a different way back to camp. I sure am looking forward to some weekends at Riders’ Roost this Summer. If you ain’t been in a while, get back to the creek and campfire. You can pitch a tent or stay in the bunk house or cabins. There are some new deluxe cabins and primo suites. The Roost is great for groups with a covered pavilion, game room, music, karaoke, and a great outdoor kitchen. 5th Annual Allison Hunt Memorial Scholarship Ride By: Rose and Lloyd May 5th was a beautiful Saturday. The perfect day for the 5th Annual Allison Hunt Ride. As I think back the weather has always been beautiful for this ride. Makes me feel like Allison is so proud of her parents, Tamara and Larry, for doing this to help keep her memory alive. As every year, the ride began at Ledford High School. A beautiful country ride was escorted by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department. This year there was a new destination. The ride ended at Casa DeSoto’s Mexican Cuisine on Westchester Drive in High Point. Approximately 55 bikes participated in a silent auction, 50/50, raffle, and door prizes, raising enough to award two $5000 scholarships to seniors at Ledford High School. As of this date, 12 students have received scholarships totaling $45,000. This year three past recipients graduated from college. Dallas Berrier graduated from UNC-Greensboro with an As-

sociate Degree in Nursing. She will begin her nursing career at Moses Cone Critical Care Unit in July and plans to start her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing this October. Mary Davis graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Women and Gender Studies. She is currently in graduate school working on MBA with emphasis on Media Management. Rebecca Louya graduated from UNC-Wilmington with a Bachelor of Arts in Athletic Training with minor in Psychology. Her plans are to pursue a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training and is currently seeking employment as a Trainer. A huge congratulation to each of you and all that have participated each year to help make these scholarships available. Healing?

Bro-Bro-ettes, Do you believe in Healing? Some people believe in healing and some don’t. God doesn’t heal you just because you ask Him, you have to believe and have faith. Through David’s problem with his foot and even when Tank was alive and going through some of the same stuff, people would come up and ask if they could pray for them that God would heal them. Well, healing comes in different ways, both David and Tank got their healing when they had to have their foot taken off. People would ask them if they didn’t believe and have faith. Yes, they did, but some of the people believed He was going to heal them so they could keep their foot. Healing doesn’t always come the way we want it to. Jesus is still in the healing business now as he was years ago when he walked on earth. Healing comes from the inside, but God is the one that heals you. Many will say the doctors have the power and knowledge to heal, and that is true, but not only from their schooling and knowledge, but from the power of God. Jesus is the great physician and sometimes he uses the doctors to accomplish His will. When David was in the hospital, after his surgery, he coded when he came back to his room. We all prayed and asked God to bring him back. I wasn’t ready to lose him, and I knew God wasn’t through with him yet. Through God’s will and the doc-

tor’s hands, David was brought back. Anything you ask God to do, He will. People believe God uses you like a sunny-side up egg, and he sticks a fork in the yolk just to make you suffer. John 15-7. If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. It wasn’t David’s time to die. If it was, he wouldn’t have been brought back. When it’s your time, it’s your time! John 15-16. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father In My name He may give you. Some people just want to give up when they get sick. What we need to do is speak to that sickness and tell it to leave in the name of Jesus. God gave us the authority to do so. You can’t lay your life down without God giving you something better. Jesus will never leave us, but we can walk away from Him. Some people may down you for believing, but that’s OK. JAMR, the acronym for Jerry’s Annual Memorial Ride, is held each year in honor of Jerry Grimes, a wellknown eastern North Carolina motorcycle enthusiast, avid rider, and motorcycle salesman. Jerry, a victim of Sarcoidosis [sahr-koidoh-sis] Disease, passed away in the fall of 2014. North Carolina. What is Sarcoidosis? Sarcoidosis is a chronic disease that affects multiple systems in the body, from the eyes to the lungs to the brain. It is characterized by the buildup of immune system cells in organs that form small clusters called granulomas, a type of inflammation of the involved tissues. Sarcoidosis is not cancer; nor is it contagious. Although it can occur in families, it is not inherited. Usually the disease is not disabling; most people with sarcoidosis live normal lives. In fact, in the majority of cases, the disease appears only briefly and disappears on its own. About 20% to 30% of people with sarcoidosis are left with some permanent lung damage, and in 10% to 15% of patients the disease is chronic. Although it is rare, death from Sarcoidosis can occur if the disease causes serious damage to vital organs, such as the brain, lungs, or heart. For more information on this disease please visit: www. Lunch featured guest speakers from the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research. There were also door prizes, a silent auction, raffle ticket sales, event bracelet sales, and a 50/50 contest. The ride itself included 3 stops, the first being at Double Barley Brewing Co. in Smithfield, then on to Fun Products, Inc. in Goldsboro for a memorial ceremony, and finally to Cycle Max of Wilson. The ride covered about 109 miles and took 4 hours. Law enforcement escorts for the ride were provided by Wake County Sheriff’s Department, Garner Police, Wilson Mills Police and Fire Departments and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department.

We are demanding safety for our children and need your help. There are 125 Colleges, 79 Public Schools, and 49 Private schools in NC and a total of 34,000 students. Any school could be the next to be attacked. God forbid, any one of our children could be the next victim. We are just a group of concerned mothers who feel that the punishment, and the bond being set for people shooting up our schools and threating our schools is just not enough. People ask me if that is an infringing upon their rights, but it is not. In my opinion, they are infringing upon our children’s rights to an education, to safe schools. There are threats of school shootings and actual shooting happening about every week all over our country. The problem

is they threaten the schools and get off on $500 bond and are set free to follow through with their threats. We have no idea which threats are real or just copycats. They all should be treated as real and punished to fullest extent of the law.’ Our children have just as much right to protection as government employees, even more because our children are not equipped to protect themselves. Ride Of Pride 2018

By: Gary Steelman On May 24th, the Ride Of Pride send off and dedication ceremony was held at Freightliner in Cleveland, NC. This year’s trucks are all special in that each truck commemorates the dedication and excellence of our military in different theaters of action. The Werner Enterprises sponsored truck features a scene of the “Red Tails”. The Tuskegee Airmen’s P-51 Mustang proudly flies again alongside the cab of the 2018 Freightliner. This year marks the 75th year since the creation of the Tuskegee Airmen who became known as the “Red Tails.” This truck is a rolling memorial to the undaunted spirit of those men of

honors all of our active military and will roll across America honoring all who have served in the armed forces. This year’s Ride Of Pride is named the “Carolinian”. For those who have not yet heard about the Ride Of Pride,

the Army Air Corps serving from 1940 to 1952. Chief Express of Seagrove, N.C. sponsored the 2018 5700XE Western Star “Code Talkers” truck this year which pays tribute to the “Code Talkers” who during World War I and II used Native American language as communications code. This is the only code used by the military that was not broken during its time of use. after 9/11 a few veterans from the Freightliner plant in Cleveland NC got together and decided to honor those who would and have laid down their lives in defense of freedom. They went to Freightliner’s Plant manager at that time and asked to use a Freightliner truck in a parade, to decorate it and return it afterwards. 10th Annual Honoring Their Service Motorcycle Escort By: Bill Gallaway This year there were 27 Marines from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina that arrived in the upstate of South Carolina to participate in a week of Rest, Relaxation, and Recognition. On Monday, June 11th, over a hundred motorcyclists also arrived in Central, SC at this year’s new staging area at Southern Wesleyan University. This year there was food provided by Pioneer College Caterers and beverages provided by Blue Hill Coffee & Tea Co. While the riders were waiting for the arrival of the Marines, they stayed busy visiting with the other riders and making new friends. It was the first escort for some of them. I think maybe the new staging area brought out new riders. It wasn’t long before we received the announcement that the Marines were coming and stopped for a short ceremony consisting of a prayer, The Pledge of Allegiance, and The National Anthem. After the ceremony the Marines were welcomed by the attendees and began boarding

the Jeeps provided by the Upstate Legends Jeep Club. The motorcyclists, escorted with the assistance of local police, led the motorcade of Marines to Keowee Key, and onward to Duke Energy’s World of Energy in Salem, SC. Those that rode the 40 mile route experienced partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the high 80’s with high humidity. The route from Central traveled through Clemson, Seneca and Salem where they were greeted by thousands of flag- waving Americans who were showing their support for these Marines and all those that put their lives on the line every day. This is the tenth year that host families welcomed the Marines into their homes for four days of recreation and relaxation. The 2018 group of 27 also included spouses for the first time. The day ended with a recognition supper with all the fixings for the cyclists and jeep drivers at the Light House Restaurant on Lake Keowee. We all know that spouses are supporting their Marines by keeping the home fires burning while they are deployed and this year they will be shown some recognition. While they were here they got to play golf, tennis, swim, fish, water ski, Jet Ski, and go tubing. In between, they visited with their host families and attended some local Veterans recognition events. On Thursday morning they enjoyed a breakfast out and a trip to Clemson University where they learned about the school’s military heritage as well as a visit to Memorial Stadium, home of college football’s National Champions. They went across the street, slapped Howard’s Rock and ran down the hill. It was a great experience and will be remembered. This event is made possible by the following: The Keowee Key community, Duke Energy, The Lighthouse Restaurant, and the Roger C. Smokin’ Harley-Davidson’s 9th Anniversary Celebration By: Caroline

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 9 years since Smokin’ Harley-Davidson brought new life in the local motorcycle community. In order to make sure this year’s celebration is awesome, the Smokin’ team partnered with radio personalities, Chris Kelly, Chris Demm, Biggie, and Weather Dave from Rock 92 to give away a brand new 2017 Custom Softail Slim. Folks have been registering for weeks, and some at the last minute, for a chance to win this machine. Before the drawing there was lots to do. Vendors of all kinds had set up to provide a great shopping experience. The Winston-Salem HOG chapter sold hot dogs and drinks that were enjoyed while listening to live music performed by Brandy Station. In addition to last minute registrations, Rock 92 had prizes and giveaways. At last, it was time for the drawing! To add to the suspense, a reverse drawing eliminated all but 10 people. At that time a box of motorcycle keys was offered to each of the final 10 who were hoping to pick the key that will start the bike. Chariots Of Fire Motorcycle Ministry Bike Night By: Luke Stevens On June 15th, the Chariots Of Fire Motorcycle Ministry (COF) hosted a bike night for all area riders at Coach’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill. The event organizers were proud to announce that 44 motorcycles made an appearance during the evening. Door Prizes and a 50/50 raffle helped kick off the event. I spoke with Adam Tackett from the COF and he stated, “June 15th was an amazing night. The number of bikes showing up to Coach’s in Mt Airy, NC was outstanding. It was awesome to see riders from all over come out and enjoy the great food and even better fellowship.” Tackett continued with, “Monies raised through bike night will be used to help those in need. Rather than serving food to the less fortunate, helping a fellow biker purchase a new tire if the need be. All the funds are donated back into the community. We will continue to love life, love people, and love our

community through these efforts.” The highlight of the evening was the fellowship of many different organizations that were present Irish American Brotherhood Dullahan Chapter, His Laboring Few, Enforcers, Dragon Slayers, and many more. Another bike night has been scheduled for July 27th at 7 pm.

Bob’s Celebration Of Life Robert “Bad Bob” Davis: October 9, 1946 – May 16, 2018. By: Wally Wersching I don’t know how to start this article. It’s about my old friend Bob. I’ve known Bob for over 30 years, and he always had a smile on his face under his white beard, and a controversial subject on his lips. Bob was a member of the Windjammers MC for almost 40 years. He was the face of the club – being at every event and guiding the club through some tough times. Bob is no longer with us. He was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on May 14th and died of his injuries on May 16th. He was riding his old friend, a 1987 Harley-Davidson FXR, that he bought new when it happened. Earlier in the day, he picked the bike up at the bike shop. Now it was ready for the long summer riding season. He stopped at Walmart to pick up a prescription and was heading home when it happened. A lady in a Dodge Durango was going to stop at Bradshaw’s Food Mart and wasn’t paying attention to traffic. She turned left in front of Bob. Bob hit the Dodge and was thrown into the ditch. A passerby stopped her car and ran over to Bob to see what she could do. She couldn’t help Bob, so she stayed with Bob comforting him until help arrived. They took Bob to Carolinas HealthCare System Cleveland in Shelby, and then airlifted him to the best hospital in Charlotte. His injuries were too serious. No matter what the doctors did, they could not save him. The whole biker community felt the loss. It was like in the Star Wars movies when a Jedi dies, and there’s a ripple in “The Force”. Everyone is hurting from the loss. I read about the tragedy in the Shelby Star on Friday May 18th. It made the front page. I was speechless. I never thought that it would happen to him. He’s been riding motorcycles all his life. It was a real shock! I learned that the Windjammers were having Celebration of Life for him at the clubhouse on Saturday at 2 PM. I had to go and pay my respects. I arrived at the clubhouse about 1:45 on Saturday. I wasn’t surprised to see the parking area already full of bikes and cars. I walked into the clubhouse to see that many of the old members came back to say good-bye. There were also many members of other local clubs, and biker ministries at the event. They all had a different story to tell about Bob, and how he interacted in their lives. I looked for Bob’s longtime girlfriend, Tammy. When I found her, she gave me a very emotional hug. They were very close. Whenever you saw Bob, she was there, too.

I walked around talking to people, and many were saying that it was “his time to go” or he was now “with God”. His family was large with many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Even his much-loved dog Trixie will miss him. I know that Bob will be in heaven riding his FXR. I’ll hear him whenever there’s a thunderstorm, and the thunder rumbles across the sky. The service was very emotional with a few speakers, hymns, and prayers. Bob will be buried on Windjammers property (Red’s Place) near Smyrna, SC. There is a small cemetery there.

Angier Bike Fest By: Johnny Reb Hey everyone! Johnny Reb coming at ya! June 2nd was the date, weather… perfection…the place to be, well that is easy! Angier, NC! That morning I jumped on my scoot and pointed it down Hwy 70 west. This rally is the one I look forward to every year. If you have not been, you need to mark your calendar for next year, because this is the place to be. The town of Angier shows everyone else how to do a rally. They welcome bikers to enjoy their little picturesque town. No hassles, parking for bikes made easy, every shop open to bikers, because they know the obvious that some of the bigger rallies have yet to grasp. Open your town and bikers will open their chain drive wallets. The whole rally is to raise money for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. I made my donation at the BBQ Brothers tent. They are the most dedicated club to raise money for PBTF. I have met some great people over the past

couple years, but out of all of them Ol Timer of BBQ Brothers RC has got to be one of the best. He and all the members are so dedicated in stomping out that hideous disease, I know that

it won’t be long before a cure is found. Their tent is always the first one I look for because there is always some of the best BBQ you will ever eat and while you are there take a minute to talk to the best folks you will ever want to meet. Walking around and taking it all in, there was everything you could want; fantastic food, vendors selling shirts, leather, and bike parts. Which leads me to another of my friends. Jeff from D&Q motorsports was there with a trailer load of parts. Seats, wheels, and everything you can think of for used parts. In fact, I bought an old Electra Glide solo seat that I retro fitted to work on my 2010 Street Glide! If you need some parts new or used go see Jeff at D&Q Motorsports, you won’t be disappointed.

There were just so many vendors and things to see it took all day. Oh, did I mention the band? They were kicking some of the best music I have heard in a while! Rock, classic rock and some rockabilly. Man, do I love to hear some rockabilly at these things! Jessica Kat and The Fireballs! Asskicking music! I had to stop and talk to some of the MCs that had booths set up, always great to see everybody representing their clubs. Before I called it a day I had to go in to Good Times Café for the BEST fresh burger this side of the Pecos! Morris knows how to do it right people. Fresh ground Angus burger, buns brought in fresh every day, and great service on top of that! Every time I’m in Angier, that’s where I eat. I’m going to close this out just as I always do, with a list of all the MCs that were represented there. If you don’t see your club, no disrespect intended. Xtreme Wings-N-Things Memorial Weekend Event By: Caroline Memorial Weekend in this area is very special with lots to do and plenty of places to ride. Xtreme Wings-N-Things partnered with their neighbors, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson to make a day of it on Saturday, May 26th. True, the weather was on and off showers, but that did not stop the folks from coming out. Vendors took advantage of the opportunity to show off their items from jewelry to barbecue sauce. In addition, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson offered some good deals on their bikes and accessories. The day started out with a benefit ride and raffle to raise money for the new Kernersville VA Hospital. When the riders returned, the party was just starting at Xtreme Wings-NThings. Inside, the 7 Roads Band was energizing the crowd despite the small rain shower outside. That gave everyone a chance to get some great food before the next band. Luckily the rain stopped in time for what everyone was waiting for. Recording country artist, Tim Elliott, took the outdoor stage and did not disappoint. Well, the official start to summer was great and we are looking forward to more exciting events with Xtreme Wings-N-Things. Be sure to stop by to find out what else they have planned for this summer. HOG Happenin’ In Hickory Story and photo by Alan Dockery This year the long-running HOG Happenin’ moved to the Hickory, NC, American Legion Fairgrounds for some bikes and barbeque. Organizers planned a four-day rally with lots going on for folks coming to Hickory for the weekend. Local bikers rode in every day for their favorite bands and to party. The fairgrounds is a good place for a biker rally. Vendors were laid out around the oval with the main stage facing the party. Presented by the Law Offices of Jason E. Taylor, the HOG Happenin’ had something going on all weekend. The event kicked off Thursday night with a couple favorite local bands. The Red Dirt Revelators and Problem Child played until late that evening. For the next couple days, the fairgrounds was rocked by a whole bunch more bands. Sorry I didn’t get all the names. Thanks for giving us some great background music all weekend. I was impressed by some of the bands I hadn’t seen before. Preacher Stone closed out

Saturday night. HOG Happenin’ offered rides to the mountains for folks who don’t live around here. Onsite there was always something to do. Yes, when it’s hot and sunny sitting in the shade talking with old friends is something I like to do. But I had to get up and see what was happening. There were some nice bikes in the show. I loved Jack’s new Shovelhead custom. Twisted Covenant ran the bike games between bands. Once in a while, there was a wet t-shirt contest and some oil wrasslin’ going on. HOG Happenin’ is also about barbeque and who brought the best. Fish led the judging team and said one crew knocked it out of the park with their bone suckin’ good food. Martin and Austin Almond run The Sauce And All That Goes With It in Concord, NC, and swept all the awards. The fairgrounds folks, the police, and the locals enjoyed HOG Happenin’ and plan to have it back at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds next year. Y’all come on and join us. There is room to motorcycle tent camp and hookups for y’all who bring campers.

“Redneck” Receives Help By: Rick Gammons April 21st was a busy day for a lot of bikers and others. Everyone was supporting whatever charity group that someone said they should. That’s great, but the VFW Post 9899 used this day to support one of their own. Ricky “Redneck” Price has some serious issues. He has lost a leg, and recently, he lost sight in one eye, almost overnight. He also has several other medical issues that affect his quality of life. He and I sat inside at the VFW and discussed high blood pressure, cholesterol, and a few other things that he and I share medically. Remarkably, Rick has an excellent attitude about the entire ordeal. He told me that this day the grass was under him, not over him and that was a good thing. Redneck is so very thankful to all those who participated in the horseshoe tournament for him and to help with some of his medical expense. Rick is a good guy and all of his buds got together on Saturday to help him and, in the meantime, have a great time themselves. I don’t remember how many teams there were, but there were several. Everybody pitched, laughed, cussed a little, and ribbed each other about their pitching prowess. I know most of these folks and I know they were all having a really fine day! I don’t know the amount given to Rick, but I do know the generosity of his friends was greatly appreciated. Everyone there contributed to the need of a fellow individual that most everybody knows. I see large venues with all the pomp you can imagine, and this is all good, but what I see less and less is local bikers and friends gathering to help someone within their own click. Be like the VFW and help someone in your company of individuals. Bet you could think of someone now Thanks VFW Post 9899. Come by and see them (horseshoes Sunday) on Archdale Road in High Point.

7th Annual Iron Chariot Run By: Debbie Harmon Greater Piedmont Adult and Teen Challenge (GPTC), located at 1912 Boulevard Street in Greensboro, NC, is an eleven acre campus dedicated to helping young men struggling with drug and alcohol addictions. The men come to the Christ-center discipleship program and are there for seven months. They will have classes each morning to learn how to deal with issues that have brought them to the point of addiction. They will have work assignments, be part of the all-male choir, and travel to churches and civic groups to share how their life is being changed. They will participate in chapel services, help in the ministry’s thrift store, do yard work, maintenance, laundry, cooking, and many other areas of service at the center. Yes, at GPTC the men’s lives are changed by the power of Jesus.

Part of our funding comes from events like our 7th Annual Iron Chariot Ride, which was held on June 2, 2018. The bikers gathered at the center where they enjoyed Krispy Kreme doughnuts and coffee. Foreign Cars Italia, one of our sponsors for the event, brought a Maserati to showcase during registration. Kickstands went up at 10 a.m. Three sheriff’s bikes and one car escorted the ride through the country roads of Oak Ridge, Summerfield, Greensboro, Brown Summit, and Gibsonville. There were threats of rain all around us, but we had beautiful weather and it was raindrop free. The temps were wonderful, and the ride was relaxing. The 25 bike parade pulled into the TA Truck Stop, at I-40 and Route 62, for a mid-ride break and then finished the ride through the country roads of Climax, Pleasant Garden and finally coming up Groometown Road back to GPTC. Everyone gathered in the GPTC dining hall where a sub lunch from Jam’s Deli and cookies from Harris Teeter were enjoyed by all. After lunch the choir ministered in song, student Jordan shared what God has done in his life and how his life has changed since coming to GPTC. This ministry depends on the generosity and support of all those who know about us and know what a good work is being done at GPTC. We would like to especially thank Fresh Market, Mike and Theresa Williams of Gladwell Insurance, GPTC’s Executive Director, Dr. Bob Harman, and Kevin and Annie Campbell for all their help organizing this event. MANIAX Florida Ride Story and photo by Angela Black The first weekend in May, the MANIAX Riding Club of Catawba, NC, set off for their first big ride of the season. We rode from Claremont to Cape Coral, Florida. That was our first destination of the ten-day vacation together. Ten days was definitely NOT long enough to see and do all we wanted to do. But we covered a lot of ground while there. This was the first time that most of them had ever been to Florida. Midway thru the week, we took to the road again and rode down to the Florida Keys which was absolutely amazing. Again, nowhere near enough time to do everything. However, we made every minute count. The food – sights - entertainment was definitely unforgettable in both Cape Coral and The Keys. During our journey, Mother Nature was so good to us. The day we arrive at our house and got everything unloaded and settled in -- it rained on us for about 30 minutes. That was the only rain we had during our whole vacation. We could not have asked or prayed for better weather. So, YES, we put some miles on the scooters. The following week after we left it

rained every day. I could go on and on talking about our trip, but I would rather say this. To ALL of our brothers and sisters out there, If your riding club or riding buddies have never been to Cape Coral and the Florida Keys you are missing out. You should really add them to your see and do list. I promise you will not regret it. This trip is already on our agenda again for 2019. Bikers Inside The Beltway By: Cindy Hodges Eleven years ago, then Vice President of The Motorcycle Rider’s Foundation (MRF), Michael “Boz” Kerr of Chicago finalized his vision for a national biker lobby day and pitched it to the board of directors. He was the political visionary, the news junkie who watched, read, and listened to all things political. Tragically, the evening Boz returned home from the conference wherein he unveiled his vision, he suffered a massive coronary and was gone. The following spring, in accordance with his wishes and in recognition of the true need, the Bikers Inside The Beltway event was born. A few small handfull of bikers came to D.C. to lobby for their rights. Each successive (and successful) year, more bikers came. These bikers were traditionally members of state motorcyclist’s rights organizations (SMROs), and a few club members. In North Carolina, that would be Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of NC; in South Carolina, it was members of ABATE of SC. In the nearly two decades previous to this event, both organizations sent lobby teams at different times of the year, though sometimes together. Having so many bikers from around the nation on Capitol Hill at one time, however, has been a powerful thing, and is becoming more so. The event has grown and this year, between 160 and 180 bikers representing at least 30 states, numerous SMROs and M/ Cs, walked the halls of Congress and the Senate together. Some of us, having become familiar with the Congressional campus and issues, took care of our personal legislator’s offices and then helped those for whom this was new, from other states. It says a lot that bikers from clubs, organizations, associations, both national and state-based, are now lobbying side by side. Last year, a documentary segment was being filmed. This year, the MRF had a professional videographer/photographer embedded for the purposes of future education about what it is we all achieve when we come together. Of prime importance this year, is an effort to get our federal government to encourage states to back off on some of the unwarranted discrimination that occurs against us. Specifically, profiling; being pulled over for no valid reason, and some of the ensuing complications. Citizen biker lobbyists sat with legislators and staffers alike, telling of specific instances of harassment. Also on the concern list, are issues with autonomous vehicles, ethanol, and the ability to build racing bikes and cars. There are very real issues at hand here and if we do not raise our voices, we are darn sure muffling ourselves. Meetings were taken with Congressmen/women and Senators, including key figures such as the office of the Congressional Minority Whip, and Mitch McConnell, as well as Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan. Bikers were literally everywhere in the halls. No one was there to avoid those legislators they might not agree with; rather, with the eye on the prize, good work was done! As a result, co-sponsors were found for some of the bills; more are coming on line with us still at this writing. A bill has been

entered based on the efforts of properly armed biker constituent lobbyists to expand awareness on proper use of greater than 10 percent ethanol blend fuels, require improved labeling, seek end user’s input, and create an awareness campaign about these fuels. This lobbying event costs attendees a good chunk of money. Some, like the NC MRF State Representative, has a large amount of expenses in the form of reimbursement for hotel accommodation paid by the CBA ABATE of NC treasury, per vote of the executive council. Still, days of income lost and the high cost of daily expenses also add up to hundreds of dollars. As motorcyclists and American citizens, we can be both thankful to have such support, and absolutely okay about the loss of income because at the end of the day, if things in our motorcycling life aren’t as they should be, we’ve no one to blame but ourselves. Our poker runs, bike nights, camping parties, riding vacations, etc., are a heck of a lot more fun - generally speaking... and wouldn’t we like to continue on with that? To that end, you are all invited to join Concerned Bikers Association/ ABATE of NC, ABATE of SC, and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation to do your share in protecting your riding liberties. Don’t like meetings? Don’t go! Don’t agree with what you perceive the overall politics to be? Guess what? These organizations are peopled with and led by folks whose politics run from the right, to the left, and sometimes all over. There are benefits to helping shoulder the load there, brothers and sisters. You can visit the MRF website (www.MRF.org) and sign up for emailed alerts, or read specifics about the bills which were discussed. Or join! You can visit Concerned Bikers Association’s website (www.CBA-ABATENC.org) to join, or ABATE of SC’s website (www.ABATESC.com) to join there as well. Your financial support is vital especially if you are unable to attend these important meetings. It enables other likeminded bikers to represent you.

Raging Bull Harley-Davidson’s First Food Truck Rodeo

By: Ed Cleary What do frozen t-shirts, losers winning, and bacon have in common? These were all a part of the festivities at Raging Bull Harley-Davidson’s first Food Truck Rodeo held on June 2nd. My wife, Jill, and I love to spend the weekends riding. For our Saturday rides we always try to stop in at Raging Bull to take advantage of the free burgers, hot dogs, beer, and live music they typically offer. This last Saturday, though, they really went all out with their Food Truck Rodeo, which featured everything from gyros to bacon and French pastries to ice cream. Upon rolling into the parking lot we were greeted by the pleasing sounds of the Will McBride Group. To say they were really good is an understatement. It’s not often that you hear a cover band doing justice to the likes of Steely Dan and Carlos Santana. And then there were the food trucks! Bacon Essence, LaFarm Bakery, Moon Runners Saloon, Not Just Icing, Charlie’s Kabob Grill On Wheels, and the Corner Venezuelan provided many

choices for lunch. And then there were the games and contests. My favorites were the frozen t-shirt and the slow ride contest. The frozen tshirt was just what the name implies. T-shirts were frozen into blocks of ice and the contestants had to break them free and put them on. John West won this one. Then there was the slow

ride, Raging Bull H-D broke out their training bikes (the ones with the fall guards) and off they went, dragging brakes all the way to the finish line, with the last across winning. Cliff Peek, the slowest of the slow, took top honors here. All in all, it was a very fun afternoon with great food, really good music, lots of fun and games, and great comradery with old friends and new.

18th Annual Claremont Rescue Poker Run Story and photo by Alan Dockery I love a local poker run with friends helping a local organization that we all may need to help us some day. On a pretty late April Saturday morning, about 200 riders headed out for the 18th Annual Claremont Rescue Pig Pickin’ and Poker Run. Some days it’s just fun to make a lap of the area with your buddies. The Claremont Rescue Squad is the folks who could be there to help each of us someday. In addition to the police and fire departments, these first responders have specialized training in rescuing you from all kinds of places you could find yourself in trouble. “All of the riders said that the ride was awesome,” said Rescue Squad Chief, Eric Jones. “Cecil Cook and the Blue Knights have been helping since our first one. Cecil and his guys set out a great ride. The riders are always the backbone of the event. With almost 200 riders we felt that was an excellent turnout. We have people start asking us about the ride as early as January. They want to get it on their calendar every year.” Maybe those riders are thinkin’ about the Pig Pickin’ too. they have set out some good food. BBQ pig, chicken, and fixings and deserts. Folks come from all over the county for supper that day. Lots of them come over to the motorcycle parking, too, and talk about the pretty machines and bikes they had years ago. The Big FanDamily Band was playing for folks enjoying the BBQ and checking out auction items and door

prizes. “Ronald Navey won the best poker hand and donated his winnings back to the squad,” Jones said. “Thanks to the St. Stephens High School and Bunker Hill High School Beta Clubs this year for their help. Without strong support from our members and groups like these kids it would be hard to put this event on every year.” This ride is also when I buy my first tickets for the rescue squad’s annual gun raffle. Northside Tavern Rocks Sparta By: Rick Gammons In November 2017, Northside Tavern altered the atmosphere of the town of Sparta, a mountain community in Alleghany County, NC. If you have been on the Parkway or up HWY 18 out of Wilksboro, you know about Freebornes, a regular motorcycle stop. But lately, I have been seeing bikes roll on by headed further up 18, riding nice twisties and enjoying the magnificient community countryside. Wonder why? I cannot answer that, but I do know that local bikers are going to Northside Tavern. I learned this from Eddie, one of the local bikers in the area. They are going there because beer is cheap and the atmosphere is friendly and inviting. Northside Tavern happened when Liz and Max met. Liz was working at another club and Max was shooting pool there. It wasn’t long before they decided to provide a place without drama, a place where locals and all others are welcome. All bikers are welcome there, too. As a matter of fact, Max contacted me for an ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine just to let bikers know there is a

good place to stop in Sparta. Northside Tavern has been open for eight months and they are still in the early stages of getting things together, but they are well on their way. Right now, they have open mic on Sundays, but occasionally folks come in on other nights just to sit around and jam for a while. They have a stage and a lot of bands who come by to play there. Thursday night is bike night with drink specials that change every week. If you have had a bit too much to drink, they have designated drivers to get you somewhere safe for the night. Concerned about your motorcycle? Max will have it put inside for the night and you can come by the next day to get it. Here are some of the things they are working on for the future. More food. They grill on Sundays, but hope to do more soon. Best bike on bike night. First five bikes there can enter and voted on for best bike that week. They plan to have bike games (weenie bite, slow ride, etc.). They are open to all suggestions from other bikers. So, there you have it. Biker friendly, good location, cheap beer, no drama, food and entertainment. There is a lot going on at Northside Tavern. Drop in and say hello to Liz and Max. They would love to see you! Northside Tavern is located at 50 Wee Care Avenue in Sparta, NC. To get there, get on Hwy 18, and go 12 miles past Freebornes to Sparta. Turn left on North Sparta and ride roughly 1/2 mile. By: Buzz It takes a lot to turn a tragedy into something positive. Seth Nall left us far too early, but with the help from Casey Hilliard, one of Seth’s friends, Seth’s dad, Tim Nall, was able to create the Seth Nall Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Memorial Fund gives scholarships to graduating High School seniors to help them on their journey through college. Congratulations go to the 2018 scholarship winners, Alexander Cole and Owen McCormick. The scholarships are funded, in part, by the generosity of Tim’s friends and the motorcycle community. The 7th Annual Seth Nall Memorial Scholarship Ride was set for June 9th and the weather was all you could ask for for a ride! We gathered at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church where riders registered and drew their first card. DJ Alexster sets up every year and keeps the tunes playing during registration until it’s time for Tim to make his announcements. Tim took the mic and thanked everyone for coming out year after year. He thanked all the participants, sponsors, and his family for their support. Pastor Brian of Mt. Vernon UMC said the blessing and the mic was then turned over to the motor patrol officers who were leading the ride. After a safety briefing the 6 officers from the High Point Police Department and Randolph County Sheriff’ Department led us on one of the nicest rides I have been on in a long time. We headed south through the county and hit a great stretch of winding county roads till we got to Eldorado and stopped in at the Eldorado Out Post for a quick stretch, cold drinks, and a group picture. We mounted up again and headed out for the Randolph CBA lodge as our final destination of the day. I was a little worried as we passed the signs for the Randolph County Detention Center, but we all arrived at the lodge without any delay! At the lodge, the folks from BBQ Joe’s were hard at work preparing the meal for the riders and it was a great way to cap off the ride. They served BBQ, slaw, baked beans, hush puppies and banana pudding for desert. While we all chowed, a silent auction was set up with some cool auction items including a few great prints of paintings that Tim’s “little buddy” Blake Henkel painted. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant the Atheist cried out, “Oh my God!”. Time Stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. “You deny my existence for all these years, teach others that I don’t exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect Me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?” The atheist looked directly into the light, “It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the bear a Christian?” “Very well,” said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed, and the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke: “Lord, bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.” An armed and hooded robber bursts into the Bank of Ireland and forces the tellers to load cash into a sack. On his way out the door with the loot, one brave Irish customer grabs the hood and pulls it off revealing the robber’s face. The robber shoots the guy in the head

It was the mailman’s last day on the job after 35 years of carrying the mail through all kinds of weather to the same neighborhood. When he arrived at the first house on his route he was greeted by the whole family there, who congratulated him and sent him on his way with a big gift envelope. At the second house they presented him with a box of fine cigars. The folks at the third house handed him a selection of terrific fishing lures. At the fourth house he was met at the door by a strikingly beautiful woman in a revealing negligee. She took him by the hand, gently led him through the door, and led him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced. When he had had enough they went downstairs, where she fixed him a giant breakfast of eggs, potatoes, ham, sausage, blueberry waffles, and fresh squeezed orange juice. When he was truly satisfied she poured him a cup of steaming coffee. As she was pouring, he noticed a dollar bill sticking out from under the cup’s bottom edge. “All this was just too wonderful for words,” he said, “but what’s the dollar for?” “Well,” she said, “Last night, I told my husband that today would be your last day, and that we should do something special for you. I asked him what to give you.” He said, “F@#& him, give him a dollar.” The lady then said, “The breakfast was my idea.” A dedicated Teamsters union worker was attending a convention in Las Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels. When he got to the first one, he asked the Madam, “Is this a union house?” “No,” she replied, “I’m sorry it isn’t.” “Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?” “The house gets $80 and the girls get $20”, she answered. Offended at such unfair dealings, the union man stomped off down the street in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop. His search continued until finally he reached a

Tired of constantly being broke and stuck in an unhappy marriage, a young husband decided to solve both problems by taking out a large insurance policy on his wife with himself as the beneficiary, and then arranging to have her killed. A “friend of a friend” put him in touch with a nefarious dark-side underworld figure who went by the name of “Artie.” Artie then explained to the husband that his going price for snuffing out a spouse was $5,000. The husband said he was willing to pay that amount, but that he wouldn’t have any cash on hand until he could collect his wife’s insurance money. Artie insisted on being paid at least something up front, so the man opened his wallet, displaying the single dollar bill that rested inside. Artie sighed, rolled his eyes, and reluctantly agreed to accept the dollar as down payment for the dirty deed. A few days later, Artie followed the man’s wife to the local Super Wal-Mart store. There, he surprised her in the produce department and proceeded to strangle her with his gloved hands and as the poor unsuspecting woman drew her last breath and slumped to the floor, the manager of the produce department stumbled unexpectedly onto the murder scene. Unwilling to leave any living witnesses behind, ol’ Artie had no choice but to strangle the produce manager as well. However, unknown to Artie, the entire proceedings were captured by the hidden security cameras and observed by the store’s security guard, who immediately called the police. Artie was caught and arrested before he could even leave the store. Under intense questioning at the police station, Artie revealed the whole sordid plan, including his unusual financial arrangements with the hapless husband who was also quickly arrested. The next day in the newspaper, the headline declared: “ARTIE CHOKES 2 FOR $1.00 AT WAL-MART!”

Xtreme Wings-N-Things Not So Boone Bike Rally By Buzz Bikers are always looking out for each other. When our brothers or sisters go down, we have a benefit to help them out. When they have a bad day, we go for a ride and grab a few cold ones. Sometimes, they have to cancel a rally, and the community rallies around them then as well! This was exactly the case when it came to Xtreme Wings-N-Things Not So Boone Rally. Torrential rain fall from a tropical storm that just didn’t quit made for a dangerous situation for rally goers at the Boone Bike Rally. Organizers were forced to shut it down. That’s were Brandee Amos of Xtreme Wings-N-Things stepped in to help out. It was “my crazy idea and it turned into one hell of a weekend”, Brandee said. She called the rally coordinators after it was posted on Facebook that the rally would be can-

celled and offered to move the spring rally to Xtreme and host the bands and vendors.

The bands and some vendors, including Biker Trash Nation, signed on and brought the rally down the mountain. Xtreme Wings-N-Things brought in 3 extra beer truck orders to keep the party going as Bongo Bach Soul Ensemble, Karolina Rose Band, Southern Thunder, Problem Child, and local one man band, Guitar Dave, all brought the tunes. During the day John and Tina Luther handled the “people games”, the biker community handled the rest of the fun on their own and raised money for the flood victims in Boone, too! It was a great way to salvage a rained out rally, thanks to Brandee and Chad at Xtreme Wings-N-Things and to the biker community who is always looking out for each other. CCIB / CRKA 14th Annual Renee Ledford Memorial Party By: Wally Wersching On Friday, June 1st and Saturday, June 2nd, the CCIB Land was the place to be. That was where the 14th Annual Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) and Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association (CRKA) Renee Ledford Memorial Party was held. It was the biggest yet with all proceeds going to Cleveland Rutherford Kidney Association. Renee Ledford was responsible for bringing the CCIB and the CRKA together many years ago, so after she passed away; they started having the party in her memory. Friday night, they had “Rocky and the Hired Guns” on the stage. Saturday morning was the poker run with the first bike out at 10 am. There were stops at East Coast Cycles in Forest City, VFW Post 4066 in Shelby, the Windjammers Clubhouse in Shelby, the CCIB clubhouse in Shelby, and finally back at the CCIB Land in Mooresboro, NC.

Later in the afternoon when all the bikes were back from the poker run, they had a cornhole tournament, and bike games. At night, the new band “Rat Race” performed on stage. I arrived at the CCIB Land at a little after 9 am on Saturday morning. After talking with a few of the club members, I learned that they had a severe storm come through Friday afternoon that downed trees, and uplifted tents. Nobody was hurt but the Land was a muddy mess. Everyone was being careful not to get stuck in the mud. As it got closer to 10 am, people were arriving, and congregating around a small building just outside the gate where they were registering for the poker run. I met a young man from Charlotte riding a Sportster. We talked about riding his motorcycle in Charlotte traffic. He said that it wasn’t much fun. People constantly cut him off like he wasn’t there. He’s been lucky (and blessed) so far with no accident, yet. I gave him a copy of the current Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and wished him luck. At exactly 10 am, “Radar” led the first group of about twenty bikes on the poker run. I took pictures as they roared past. It only took a few minutes until all was quiet again. I walked back to “Miss Vickie” and had to make a “U” turn avoiding the slick mud. I made it OK and was home in a few minutes to talk with Cindy about going out for lunch. I didn’t plan on returning for the afternoon, and evening festivities. I’m sure that they all had a great time. Armed Forces Day In Hickory By: Wally Wersching President Harry Truman was responsible for establishing a single holiday for citizens to thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson, announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard Days. The rationale for the single day celebration was that the Department of Defense was now over all of the United States Military. Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. This year it was celebrated on Saturday, May 19th. In Hickory, NC, Armed Forces Day was celebrated at the Hickory Aviation Museum with the dedication of the US Navy P-3C Orion Submarine Hunter. The P-3 arrived

at the museum in September 2017 but was not open to the public. The museum staff waited to allow visitors on board until after the aircraft was demilitarized. During the 1950s through the 1980s antisubmarine warfare was crucial to war efforts, and the P-3 Orion was a major piece in America’s arsenal. In 1969, Lockheed Martin delivered Hickory’s P-3C Orion (156515) to the U.S. Navy. The celebration began at 10 AM and lasted until 4 PM. There were speakers scheduled. The keynote speaker was Vice Admiral Walter B. Massenburg (Ret). After the speeches, inside tours of the P-3 were available where people learned about each station’s purpose on the P-3. I arrived at the museum at a little after 10 AM. The celebration was already in full swing. The Mayor of Hickory, Hank Guess, was speaking when I made my way to the event. There were about 200 spectators attentively listening to the speaker, some sitting in the chairs provided, while others were standing around the back. Luckily, the bad weather held off, and it was just lightly misting, but no rain fell. The next speaker was the admiral’s son Commander Walter B. Massenburg Jr.. He told about spending many hundreds of hours flying a P-3. He also told of his father’s many accomplishments in Naval Aviation. Then it was the Admiral’s turn. He spoke for a long time about his memories while flying P-3’s. While they were speaking, I walked around. I could still hear them because of the loud speaker system. That’s when I noticed another P-3 on the tarmac. It flew in just for the

ceremony and would be flying out later in the afternoon. The flight crew was in the front row listening to the admiral. There was another plane near the other P-3. I had never seen one like it before. The Smithsonian wanted it, but the Hickory Aviation Museum got to it first. It is a rare treasure indeed. The Curtiss XF15C, an experimental U.S. Navy aircraft designed with both a propeller and turbojet engine. The rare jet was produced near the end of World War II. The US Navy was interested in the mixed-power concept for its shipborne fighters. An order was placed with Curtiss on 7 April 1944 for delivery of three mixed-power aircraft, designated the F15C. Powered by both a 2,100 hp (1,566 kW) Pratt & Whitney propeller engine, and an Allis-Chalmers J36 turbojet, the aircraft was, in theory, the fastest fighter in the US Navy at that time. After taking a few pictures of the aircraft, I walked back to the main stage where they were about to ceremonially open the door of the P-3C for spectators. The Admiral’s grandson opened the door, and then there were pictures taken with all the P-3 community in attendance. I didn’t go to get in the picture. I didn’t feel like I belonged to the P-3 community. I only spent 8 hours flying in a P-3 while I was in Adak, Alaska in 1969. I initiated project “CLAP” (Coordinated Lofargram Analysis Program) - a 6 month program to instruct the squadron’s sonar operators in interpreting the readouts from their sonobuoys, and I wanted to see what their equipment looked like. It was VP-48, and they flew P-3B aircraft. The squadron earned a Meritorious Unit Citation for its performance in tracking Soviet naval units during the deployment. I like to think that my instruction was in some way helpful in them receiving the citation. The Navy gave me a Navy Achievement Award for doing it. At about 11 AM, I headed home. I couldn’t stay to see the inside of the plane. I’ll do it next time because the P-3 is now an addition to the museum. It was a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning.

9th Annual AMCA Southern National Meet Story by Alan Dockery Photos by Buzz The rain cleared for a nice Saturday at Denton Farm Park in Denton, NC, and the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s 9th Southern National Meet. It was a great day for folks who love the sights, sounds, and smells of the history of motorcycling. Not only were there lots of cool old machines to check out, but there were plenty of bikes and parts for sale, too. The Denton meet is mainly a Friday and Saturday event. The serious parts guys are digging through boxes Friday. For y’all who want to check out the meet and activities you can ride in Saturday morning and enjoy it in one day. Lots of parts and bikes were there this year. I saw some great deals from $10 for New Old Stock Harley Buckhorn handlebars for my old Honda 750 or the next minibike project to old dirt bikes that many of y’all started riding on and want again. Sunday is when they judge the bikes seeking national recognition. The AMCA Southern National Meet is not a snobby gathering of guys with high-dollar antiques. It is for you and that

clean old machine you found in a shed or the ratty project bike you’d rather ride than restore. Motorcycles 35 years old are considered antiques. Each year has a theme, 2018 it was Japanese Motorcycles. Personally, I jumped on Harleys early and skipped the Jap Bikes many of y’all rode for years. I had the “Hate Jap Bikes” T-shirts and stickers. Now I have a garage full of cool, old Jap Bikes. They are fun to ride and a chal-

lenge to work on compared to my Shovelhead. So now the imports many of y’all grew up riding are antiques. Yes, there are lots of Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, Nortons, and the bikes we are used to seeing at antique meets. But the Japanese bikes and parts vendors are increasing, too.

My Honda Trail 70 sold faster than I could un-strap it from the trailer. It will probably end up as someone’s grand-daughter’s first motorcycle. As folks see what goes on at Denton there are more who come for the whole weekend. That gives them more time for checking out the vendors, bikes, and hanging with friends. Camping at Denton Farm Park is nice with acres of cool, shady woods. I know you can buy everything online these days, but a real swap meet still has its advantages. Online you hope the part is what they claim and what you need. Buying in person at Denton you can examine the part, haggle with the seller and sometimes get an interesting story, too. The three sponsoring AMCA chapters; Blue Ridge, Dixie, and Catawba Valley; picked the perfect place since Denton Farm Park enhances the antique experience with several old buildings featuring historical equipment and machinery, plus antique train rides. Bob Aton, Meet Chairman, has done a great job for nine years building an event praised by bikers from all over the country. They often compliment Bob and the staff on hosting such a cool meet. Between the historical site and the Southern hospitality, the meet brings people back year after year. “We had a good vendor turnout this year for the ninth annual Southern National AMCA meet,” Bob said. “We continue to grow in vendors and are looking forward to the tenth anniversary next year. We continue to get vendors from across the United States, bringing their old motorcycle parts to be sold. Bob said. “As usual, the Denton Farm Park owners provide us a wonderful setting for the meet.” Saturday’s activities started with the Antique Bike Road Run through the beautiful Carolina countryside. Rain kept some folks home on Friday, so Saturday they were shopping the acres of vendors on site. I hope y’all had a hot bologna sandwich and cold Cheerwine or homemade root beer for lunch before the afternoon got busy. One of the coolest features of the AMCA Southern National

Meet is the History in Motion narrated parade of antique motorcycles. Riders line up and wait their turn to pull up to a spot, surrounded by folks, while each bike is described. This is so much better than just a bike show. The narrator tells us who is riding what. But often the rider takes the microphone and gives more details and stories about their machine. After the parade, folks moved to the field games area. You should have seen the guys and gals competing on old bikes with foot clutches and hand shifters. It was amazing how well some can ride those old machines. Once the field was clear, bikes pulled in for the Concourse D’Ordinaire, a bike show for the common bike. Any bike could enter as long as it was old and ran. This is a cool little show with awards for things like Least Chrome, Most Rustic, Least Paint, Most Cobbled, Most Sordid. The AMCA Southern National meet is the Carolinas’ event you must attend if you are into the history of motorcycles. Bikers can check out historic machines and spend hours talking to the guys who saved and restored them. You will see some of the oldest motorcycles running and rideable. Manufacturers Cup At The Rock Story and photo by Alan Dockery The first weekend of June, the Manufacturers Cup Motorcycle Drag Racing Series was back at Rockingham Dragway for the DME Nationals. In my 30 years of chasing Harley Drag Bikes down the strip, these are the quickest and fastest motorcycles in the country. Bikes are spread across several classes from Top Fuel to Dial-In ET. They even have two ET classes with Pro and Street ET, plus a V-Twin class. Most of the bikes at a Man Cup race are imports. That’s cool for us who like all kinds of bikes. Man Cup race. These blown four cylinder machines are the quickest and fastest drag bikes I’ve ever seen. They are capable of running the quarter mile in 5.80 seconds and more than 240 MPH. Man Cup attracts racers from across the country and around the world. Long-time fan favorite, Armon Furr, Orangeburg, SC, ran his Harley in Top Fuel against those funny sounding, screaming four cylinder machines. Keith Browne, Semora, NC, ran his too cool turbo machine in the Pro Open field. I saw Freddy Frazier, Sanford, NC, representing us in the Super Comp 8.90 class. Some Harley racers such as Joe and Julie Petersen and others were there running whatever class they were competitive in. Janette Thornley, Statesville, NC; Jay Beasley, Winston Salem, NC; Sam White, Columbia, SC and Tyler Wilson, Walnut Cove, NC, ran in Pro Fuel Joe Petersen won his ET Class and Tyler Wilson took the Pro Fuel trophy. Yeah, these bikes look and sound different than what many of y’all are used to, but we have so few major motorcycle drag races these days that I encourage bikers and race fans to check out the Manufacturers Cup if they come back to the Carolinas next year. At Home Far, Far Away By: Huck In the May 2018 issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, editors Mark and Molly Infield challenged all of us bikers to “…go somewhere different this year… somewhere that you have not been before.” They also added, “Excitement and adventure should be key…”. I am writing this article to say that I accepted that challenge and had quite an adventure spending three weeks in China. You don’t see too many big bore motorcycles in China although there are a lot of “trikes” that perform the bull work of commercial industry here as they can carry heavy loads and negotiate the narrow but busy roadways within town. The photo below is an example of one.

Exploring the countryside was both fascinating and challenging. Consider trying to get around when you are in a strange land and cannot read the language, road signs, or communicate with anyone. The government restricts the Internet and Wi-Fi is sporadic at best so your cell phone, GPS, and many of today’s technologies are useless. Even if you are in an

area where you can get a signal, it’s in Chinese! Well, despite the challenges, I was able to visit some fabulous sights including ancient palaces and Buddhist temples, while experiencing China’s unique culture and foods. One mandatory requirement for me when I travel is to try to visit the local HarleyDavidson dealership and this trip was no different. I spent one weekend travelling to Macao to see what they had and get some T-shirts and the next Saturday, went to Hong Kong to their H-D shop. Both cities are called Special Administrative Regions (SAR) meaning they at one time belonged to other countries and are now in the process of becoming part of mainland China. Hong Kong was turned over to China by the British in 1997 and Macao by the Portuguese in 1999. Although both Macao and Hong Kong are now technically part of China, each have their own government, currencies, and laws during the transition period. I thank both Harley-Davidson and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for bringing a bit of home to this biker while he worked on the other side of the world.
