n July, 21 years ago, we were working on Issue #1 of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. It is hard to believethat 21 years have passed since we started The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine! July is always a big month in the Carolinas’ motorcycle community, and this year is no exception. Bikers are patriots and always celebrate Independence Day in a BIG way. On July 14th the biker community will enjoy the 50th anniversary rerelease of the counterculture film that spoke for a generation: “Easy Rider”. Did you see it in July of 1969? Were you even born, yet? July 20th Is The 9th Annual Patriot Rovers Ride For The Fallen at Smokin Harley-Davidson, 3441 Myer Lee Dr., Winston-Salem, NC. Reg 10am, KSU 11:30am. $20/rider, $30/double. Dogs ride free. Escorted ride. The Patriot Rovers Ride For The Fallen raises money to train service dog companions for veterans who return home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injuries. FMI visit: patriotrovers.org or contact Wayne@patriotrovers.org. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is proud to support this ride annually. Then on July 21st, the annual Tilley Harley-Davidson of Statesville’s Sunday Bash is going on. Put this one on your calendar and plan to attend. There will be a live concert with Rockie Lynne, Lancaster’s BBQ, beer, raffles, and lots of fun at one of the premiere Harley dealerships in the state. Also, the 8th Annual Bulldog Hero Awards will be presented at Tilley Harley-Davidson of Statesville’s Sunday Bash! Every year the Karney Law Firm proudly honors the most generous and giving members of our society for their outstanding contributions to their communities with cash donations to their charity of choice. You can nominate your hero by visiting https://www. karneylaw.com/Community/Bulldog-Hero-Awards. As always, there are MANY worthwhile rides to attend and support this July. You can view the most complete listing of North & South Carolina motorcycle events in The Carolinas Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar in this issue and online at Full Throttle Magazine.com So, enjoy your motorcycle and summer riding with friends, but always be alert, aware of your situation and ride safe. We will see you somewhere in the Carolinas this summer.

“Before God, I believe the hour has come…All that I have, and all that I am, and all that I hope in this life, I am now ready here to stake upon it…Live or die, survive or perish, I am for the Declaration. It is my living sentiment, and by the blessing of God it shall be my dying sentiment. Independence now, and Independence for ever!” -John Adams, defending the Declaration at the Continental Congress July 1,1776

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson 10th Anniversary Celebration By: Caroline aturday, May 18th at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson was the day for their 10th Anniversary Celebration. And what a celebration it was! I tried to get there early that day before the crowds poured in but the place was packed with local and not so local riders who had registered to win a 2019 Fat Bob motorcycle. No wonder folks wanted to get there early! There were vendors selling all sorts of things, as well as the Bob Karney law firm gals handing out some nice free items. The Winston-Salem HOG Chapter had such a great deal on grilled hamburger and hotdog meals that they could barely keep up with the demand. Plus, there was some great live music from local band “Flavor” to entertain while taking all this in. After I was there for a few minutes, I remembered I needed a part for my bike and decided to go ahead and get it. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that my purchase was discounted in celebration of the 10th Anniversary! Not only that, I also received a 10th Anniversary pin, which was very nice and will go great on my vest. Getting back to the celebration, Two Guys named Chris, Biggie and Weather from Rock 92, and Dave, were also on hand to help liven things up. Rock 92 has partnered with Smokin’ Harley-Davidson for several years to make their Anniversary celebration one that is anticipated every year. They also were handing out lots of prizes as well as coordinating the drawing for the bike. The drawing works in a reverse method—all numbers are drawn and eliminated leaving 10. Those 10 folks each are given the opportunity to draw from a box of 10 keys and then see if their key starts the

S

bike. Needless to say, this creates a lot of excitement. This year’s winner is Eddie Bush from Kernersville—Congratulations Eddie! I have to say, that Smokin’ Harley-Davidson, really knows how to connect with the motorcycle community. It’s no wonder they are consistently voted the best motorcycle dealership in the Triad. You can check them out online at www.smokinharley.com, Facebook, or just go by 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem.

Chris Snow and his daughter

By: Gary Steelman he Red Knights NC13 and STE Powersports at 1426 Northside Dr, Statesville, NC sponsored a benefit run for Chris Snow on May 18th. Chris has multiple sclerosis and the funds raised will go toward his treatment. The ride began at STE Powersports with coffee and doughnuts. There were around 35 bikes lined up and the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department led the ride through the back roads of northern Iredell County to the Ebenezer Fire Rescue station in Statesville. Food and cold drinks were awaiting the riders inside the station, as well as door prizes and an auction was held for a nice Case XX knife. The bidding ended with at around $80 for the knife and the winning bidder held up the knife and resold it and again donated the proceeds back to Chris and his family. Nice! Support from Red Knights NC 13 and STE Power Sports will help a fellow firefighter get back to healthy status and help Chris’ family in their time of need. Thanks go out to Tractor Supply of Statesville and other businesses for donations of door prizes and to Iredell County Sheriff’s Dept. for their support.

Sparta Got a “Little” Treat

Sparta, NC are quite nice, with great roads and great twisties. Sparta is small. A usually quiet community, except for the occasional motorcycle rumble rattling the town’s windows. Gary Sparks owns Blue Ridge Grill downtown. It’s a small grill with large taste. He has food and beer. If you ride into Sparta on HWY 21, Blue Ridge Grill is just inside of town in the second strip mall on the right (just past Little River). Gary also runs the bowling alley next door, just in case you need something else to do while you are in town. On June 7th,Gary decided to shake things up in the Sparta area with midget wrestling! For a lot of people, I do not need to say anything more. For those of you who have never experienced midget wrestling, you have been missing an awesome show. The weather was a mess, with constant light showers mixed with heavier downpours. Sort of typical Sparta weather. This event was supposed to be outdoors, but with this kind of weather, other arrangements had to be made. The only place large enough to accommodate something like this was...the bowling alley. So, the ring was assembled right over top of the bowling lanes. This provided enough room for everyone and for those who were drinking; although it was an interesting journey getting to and from their seats near the ring. This provided an unintended entertainment factor for the rest of us. Outside, there were pony rides and a mechanical bull. Some kids rode the ponies, but so many more “kids” took a shot at that bull! That alone was a hoot. 0 to 60 in about one second. Watching participants trying to hang on to this “flying” bull was immensely entertaining. While all of this was going on, Chris McPeck was testing everyone’s musical knowledge He would play something on his guitar, then ask for the artist or the song title. He had little prizes for those who answered correctly. Chris is a great he mountains around

guitar player and entertainer. Meanwhile, back inside, the wrestling had started. Extreme Midget Wrestling was the name of this group, and folks, they were over the top! Most people have seen wrestling before but imagine this on a miniature scale and small stage. These guys slung each other around, beat on each other, and did a few things that your kids don’t need to know about. The best part of the show was when Pink came out. She was the only woman in the show, but she could handle the guys quite well. That part alone was worth the price of admission, and the others put on a show extraordinaire. Some of the other players literally threw each other out of the ring, then would jump over the ropes to wrestle the opponent. Wham! Then, they would chase each other around outside the ring. At one point, they were all on the floor wrestling each other. If you were not laughing you’re a$$ off by now, something may be wrong with you. This show was a hit with everyone, including some who were a bit skeptical. I also wanted to mention that Gary was very generous by having this show in conjunction with Special Olympics. I am sure the athletes will be well supported by those of us willing to assist Special Olympics through great performances such as the midget wrestling. Congrats to everyone involved, Thanks Gary! Everybody there had a large time... I mean, no one came up short! Come by and see Gary at Blue Ridge Grill, 583 S. Main Street., Sparta, NC, Grab a burger and a beer. and Ask him when he is going to do it again.

The Flat Track Racer For The Street Is Here

Indian FTR 1200

By: Lincoln Infield

A

nyone who has been paying attention to the

flat track racing circuit knows that Indian Motorcycles has made a recent surge and at present is dominating the flat track. The bike that Indian has been using is their new FTR750 that was purpose-built to revolutionize Flat Track Racing and is pushing the limits of V-Twin technology. I was totally stoked when the announcement came out that Indian was going to release 2 street legal 1200cc versions the FTR1200 and the FTR1200 S. The FTR (Flat Track Racer) was set to hit stores in June and they were right on time. I was able to secure a test ride of a brand new FTR 1200 from Indian Motorcycle Greensboro, the weather cooperated and I couldn’t be more excited to rip around on one of these little rockets. Monty Hendrix, the owner of Indian Motorcycle greeted me in the showroom and gave me some quick advice to start off easy on the throttle, which ended up being worthwhile info! Next, Morgan gave me the run down on the controls. The FTR1200 features a pretty standard 4” analog odometer with a built in digital information screen. The first thing I noticed was that the odometer had

markings all the way up to 200mp! That’s the type of thing that makes the hair stand up on your arms. The digital information screen on the odometer was pretty slick and had a lot of information in it that you could toggle through using an index finger trigger type button on the throttle side. Screens included info such as a tachometer, instant mpg, estimated mpg and more. Also featured on the bottom of the odometer housing is a discreet USB fast charger port. The controls on the clutch side included a push button electronic cruise control that was awesome and easy to use The high/low beam headlight switch was a trigger type button that you could set to high, low, or just semi depress the trigger to manually flash your high beams. The headlight, along with the taillight and turn signals are all LED’s. The start button was a bit different than I was used to. Morgan informed me that it was a smart start type button that you don’t have to hold down. You, Literally, just tap the button, and the fuel injected beast comes to life. Cool stuff. Once the bike was outside, I wanted to snap some pictures of it, you know, the business side of the ride The FTR 1200 features a “naked” street bike

styling with exposed frame webbing, a sleek seat, and mid frame foot pegs and controls. The FTR’s look is capped off by upswept performance exhaust and a monotube rear suspension that boasts a 5.9in travel. Visible just below the seat. The left side of the bike features some extra frame work that extends from the rear wheel section that acts as a rear “fender”, holding the license plate bracket and turn signals. Most likely, these will be the first part of the bike that gets removed or customized The rear brake light is very visible and built into the rear of the seat. An interesting design feature places the gas tank under the seat and the battery towards the front bottom of the frame. Both placed for balance and a low center of gravity. The engine casing features the Indian Motorcycle “I” logo and a nifty oil level window. The drive side features the Indian Motorcycle Headress logo. The FTR 1200 comes in a beautiful glossy Thunder Black. I was itching to ride, so I swung my leg over the and tapped the start button. The gauges came to life the engine sounded stout and compact. The Assist & Slip, Multi Plate Clutch was clean and smooth. Remembering Monty’s warning, I eased the throttle back to

get out in traffic. You could tell right off the bat that this bike wanted to go, and it wanted to go bad! The first part of my ride was through downtown Greensboro which allowed me to maneuver at slow speeds, weave in and out of traffic, and get used to the controls. The FTR 1200 is a taller bike than I am used to, I’m 5’9”) but I could easily get my feet flat on the ground at stop lights. The height of the bike creates higher ground clearance and a greater achievable lean angle that will come in handy when carving up the curves at a proper speed. On the slow speed approach to stop lights and in parking lots, the FTR was well balanced and extremely easy to maneuver. Once I reached the highway, I wanted to open up the throttle a bit and see what would happen. This 508lb bike with 123 horses and 87 ft-lb of torque had NO PROBLEM getting up to speed in a hurry. Monty wasn’t kidding! I could tell that it could pull up the front end in multiple gears, but it wasn’t hard to keep it under control. Honestly it was begging for more and rode comfortably well above the posted speed limit. Every gear responded quickly and there was no wait for the Continued On Page #24

Continued From Page #23 power to show up, it was waiting for you! The FTR 1200 features Dual 4 pistons caliper Brembo brakes on the front and a single disk 2 piston caliper Brembo on the rear, so getting whoa’d back down was no problem, either. Seriously, don’t squeeze the brakes too much, you’ll get every bit of the stopping power you need. It was easy to get comfortable on the FTR’s saddle even though it’s a more aggressive riding position than I am used to and it’s got a great feel for the wind. When you are riding, it feels and looks like there is nothing out in front of you and it screams of the freedom of the open road. I am hoping to see that they develop some rear view mirrors that stem off of the handle bars as this was the only awkward part. I had a little trouble locating the mirrors without adjusting my neck position. Other than that, the FTR1200 performed and rode well and I would recommend anyone to go give it a ride. Starting at $13,499 msrp there are a ton of possibilities on this budget friendly motorcycle. There are two different models of the FTR 1200 I rode the “base” model that really leaves the door open for you to get in and make some of the customization and upgrades of your

choosing. If you want to grab one that already has some of the extra goodies the FTR1200 S may be the right choice for you. The FTR 1200 S starts out at $15,499 msrp and features 3 different paint options, fully adjustable front and rear suspension, Lean-Sensitive traction and stability controls and a 4.3” Ride Command® Touchscreen instead of the 4” odometer. This tech upgrade allows you to toggle through 2 different odometers, select sport, standard, or rain modes, and even turn on and off the ABS system. These are some really cool features that may really dial in your riding experience. But as Monty made mention, these features cannot replace riding ability and awareness. I completely agree. Some extra cool features that Indian came up with for the FTR1200 are the over 40 available accessories in 4 distinct collections. Instead of building a multiple model line of bikes, they built the FTR1200 to be a versatile bike that would fit the riding needs of multiple types of riders, or maybe fit the multiple riding styles of each rider! The 4 collections are the Tracker, Rally, Tour, or Sport. The accessories can turn your FTR1200 into a Dual Sport, sport touring, sport, or the closest thing to the FTR race bike. That’s pretty cool! Make sure you stop by Indian Motorcycles Greensboro at 201 S Church St, and talk to Monty, Morgan or any of his knowledgeable staff to get the break down. Trust me, if you are excited about the FTR1200, you won’t be disappointed. If this is your first look at the FTR1200Schedule a test ride or just go pick up your own and have some fun!

13th Annual Days Of Thunder Anniversary Party By: Meaghan Holmes Photos by: Magic Table Media On June 8th and 9th,Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson in Columbia, South Carolina had its 13th Annual Days of Thunder Anniversary Party. It was sure to be action packed if the rain could just hold off. At 8:30 am, the vendors began rolling in to set up. There was a little bit of everything from food trucks and a mobile bar, to Kettle Corn and cigars . The bloodmobile was set up right out front and a line of people were giving blood to get their day started and received a free t-shirt that said I gave blood at the Tower. DJ Bull and DJ Block got the day going with a great mix of music and the rain snuck its way in a little. The guests were patiently waiting for the first act, The Urias Family Globe of Death. The Urias Family Globe of Death is a 4 generation act and they did not disappoint. The act became even more dangerous with the rain threat. As even a small bit of wetness could cause a problem. They amazed everyone as each rider entered and ripped around that globe barely missing each other. Then a woman stood directly in the middle of this metal globe as her group flew by her at incredible speeds each giving her a high five as they zipped by. They performed on 6 occasions during the weekend event and each set was not to be missed. You can check out the original globe built by their grandfather 100 years ago in the Harley-Davidson Museum Dare Devil Exhibit JuneSeptember 8th. Thunder Tower was lucky to bring in Christina Billings for the two day event. Her team put on a great show of stunts and burnouts in her signature purple and with the tiniest spark flames erupted and she gracefully glided through as though it was just another day. She gave the people what they were hoping for that weekend; excitement, danger, and a chance to meet and talk! After each of her sets she had the fans lined up as she gave away signed posters and posed for pictures. Check her out on her social media pages to see where she will be next. While the high adrenaline acts were a huge part of this event, music was just as important! Thunder Tower brought out the Anna Leigh Band with a little bit of yee-haw! She had the folks singing to the familiar cover songs and moving to their originals. Another band that was set to play was DB Bryant but unfortunately the rain came in for a short little bit and DB wasn’t able to play. They were only act that got hit with the rain. Both bands are sure to hit the Thunder Tower stage again!

Not only were the stunts “must see” moments during the Days of Thunder, Aurelia the Deep Blue Mermaid from Columbia, SC was out in her tank and making every kid (and even the big kids) excited to take their photo and watch her swim around in her traveling tank. She even brought out her giant clam shell to hang out in when she wasn’t entertaining in her tank. Aurelia is not something you see every day and especially not at your typical biker event! The rain was looking to end the night early and it looked like the last act of the night, “Extreme Midget wrestling” might be the casualty. The folks were getting a little antsy. Would it happen? With a little quick thinking and an adjustment to the plan, a spot was found for the wrestling ring out of the rain and the show would go on! What a show it was! It was fun, entertaining, and great for the whole family. The wrestling group spent 2 hours body slamming, flying off the ropes, and clotheslining each other until the champion was determined! After the wrestling extravaganza, the fireworks show was set to begin. 20 Minutes of booms and beautiful explosions set the sky full of color after such a cloudy day and ended a fabulous day full of death defying and exciting stunts, music, food, beer, and we can’t forget the beautiful Miss Thunder Tower Pageant winner: Ashlynne! Each year Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson puts on this amazing free event for their customers and community. Be sure next you don’t miss out year. Sign up for their event updates on their website and be on the lookout for Days of Thunder 14 in 2020. In the meantime, head out to Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson at 190 Pontiac Business Center Dr. in Elgin, SC and see what they have going on this weekend.

Pete Hill: A Legend On Two Wheels - By Jackie Hill

A Book Review By: Mark Infield rom the foreword, preface, and testimonials, which read like a who’swho of motorcycle racers and industry giants, I was totally intrigued and kept going back to read more until I finished it. This book is a great read for anyone who likes motorcycles, drag racing, and history. There is also a romantic love story interwoven in the pages of this book. Over a period of two years, without Pete’s knowledge, Jackie compiled her memories and facts about her adventures as pit crew, wife and partner of motorcycle drag racing pioneer and champion, Pete Hill. Pete made a name for himself building and racing a ’47 blown nitro-burning supercharged Harley-Davidson knucklehead. They traveled to dragstrips all across America from their local track in Greer, SC to California, Sturgis to Bonn-

F

eville, Edmonton, Alberta and Montreal, Canada and some in between. It wasn’t long before Pete began winning races and setting records that track promoters realized that having Pete Hill on their promotional materials and the thunderous roar of Pete’s ’47 knucklehead was drawing fans to the races by the thousands. Jackie recounts the trials, tribulations, victories and betrayals, but most of all the friendships they made over a career that began shortly after they were married in1954. Pete sold 5 Harleys that he owned to make a down payment on a new house. Then Pete bought another Harley that needed some “TLC”. Pete decided he wanted to move to the other side of town, where they both grew up because he needed a house with a garage or basement where he could play around with some Harleys. The local dragstrip would not allow motorcycles to run, so Pete built a dragster powered by a

www.

supercharged Harley engine. And so it began. Jackie reported that the 1978 schedule filled up with MOTORCYCLE races Pete finished #3in points(AMA Dragbike) in 1979 and Pete, Barbara, and Jackie were chosen by IDBA as “First Family Of Motorcycle Drag Racing,” Which, as you can imagine, they considered quite an honor. In 1980, races were held for the first time at Belle Fourche, SD, (20 miles from Sturgis). In an effort to promote the drag races, the promoters asked Pete, Jim McClure and Dave Mackey if they would push the drag bikes down Main Street in Sturgis. They drove to Sturgis, unloaded and started pushing. A crowd began to form and people began asking questions and yelling, “Crank ‘em up!” Jackie and Phyllis McClure “hooffed it back to the vans to get some fuel and hardware necessary to fire the bikes. Jim fired his bike first and laid down a big black mark right across Main Street. Next, Pete fired the knuckle, made a whole lot of noise and followed Jim up with another black mark, which set the crowd off. Not knowing if they would get in trouble, or not, Jim’s brother got Jim loaded up and out of town before any local “officials” could show up. Jackie managed to snap a picture of the “Burnout” and the rest is “history.” The book recounts too many adventures the racers experienced for me to repeat here. You are just going to have to get your own copy and read about them

FullThrottleMagazine.com

yourself! The race dates for 1981, 1982, and 1983 just kept clicking off and Pete and Jackie kept on racing and winning. They raced with a variety of sanctioning bodies. Some better than others. They were featured on flyers, magazine covers and in articles all around the world. As the popularity of Harley drag racing grew, so did Pete and Jackie’s. Along with many other notable honors, Pete was inducted into the Sturgis motorcycle Hall Of Fame and the AMA Motorcycle Hall Of Fame. Jackie states that from 1978-1988 they ran 141races, won 34 sanctioned races and 17 match races, set 12 records 4th Harley worldwide to run a 4 second 1/8th mile. Finished#4 in IDBA points in 1978, NC state Champion (CRA) in 1980. In 1981 #1in AMA Drag bike and #1Top Fuel (AMRA). From1989 to1994when Pete retired from racing, they ran 85 races and won 29 sanctioned races and 10 match races; an astounding 46% of the races they entered! Pete set 14 national records including one of the earliest (1988) sub 5 second (4.754et) at (150.51mph) 1/8th mile passes and 1worldwide record, (4th Harley to run a 4 second 1/8th mile). You can purchase a copy directly from Jackie for $28,which includes shipping, or you can pick one up at Pete Hill Motorcycles 1401 W Blue Ridge Dr, Greenville, SC 2961. Memorial Day Cornhole Tournament And Cookout At Double D’s By: Rose and Lloyd

A

Memorial Day festivities on Monday, May 27th, Rose & I decided to drop in at Double D’s Burnout Saloon in Kernersville. Upon arriving, David & Missie informed us that there were about 50 people about to show up for a cornhole tournament. You see, David & Missie Thompson had a HUGE slab of concrete poured out back set up specifically for cornhole and it’s a very nice addition. So, before long the teams started arriving and soon there were 29 teams competing on the1st round, 21 on the 2nd round and 9 teams on the 3rd round, which took the tournament well towards midnight. Nikki Leddy and Kenny Neal officiated the tournament and Rosie’s Food Truck was on site and Dave also cooked up some dogs. The bags started flying at 2:00. The money shot was to start at $249.00, the first blind draw was $10.00, followed by a $5.00 blind draw. The money shot wasn’t hit so it would start out the following week at $560.00. First place winners were Erick Davis / Branden Davis, 2nd Place Beasley / Jeff, 3rd Place Nathan Smith / Brian Lynn and 4th Place winners Roger Brooks / Matt Tuggle. Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ride

By: Ed Cleary n Saturday, May 31, Durham County Sheriff’s Deputies led 108 motorcycles out of the Raging Bull Harley-Davidson parking lot for a 50+ mile ride through the North Carolina countryside. The ride was dedicated to the memory of Wayne Page, a Durham native and a Durham County Firefighter. Wayne passed away on December 18, 2018, of esophageal cancer. To honor Wayne, the route included the traffic circle in front of Station Fifteen, which was Wayne’s station. Mendy, Wayne’s widow, said, “Wayne was a passionate motorcycle rider, so a memorial ride in his honor was the best way to remember him”. All donations, over $5,000 and still counting, from the ride are being donated to the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Clemmons Motorcycles Grand Reopening

By Caroline

C

Motorcycles moved into their new facility earlier this year but decided to celebrate on May 25th and it was a huge success!! There was so much going on it was hard to pinpoint one outstanding segment since it all worked well together creating one of the most outstanding motorcycle events in this area. As I arrived the first thing that caught my attention was the live music entertainment, local musician/ singer James Vincent Carroll. He does it all! Singer, songwriter, producer and recording artist. If you have not had a chance to check him out, go to jvcamusic.info for his upcoming performances and connect on social media. Needless to say, the Vintage Bike show was a big hit as well. It was great to see the wide variety of entries; everything from a 1929 Indian Scout to the “newest” bike, an 82’ Ironhead. There was also a wide variety of makes and models: lemmons

Yamaha, Harley’s, BMW, Triumph, Honda, and even a 1968 VW Conversion Trike owned by Sheila Weaver. What I like most about the Trike, is the customization was true to the year. There are many more outstanding features on all the bikes, and it was definitely a hard decision to decide on the winners; they were truly all winners. However, after much thought three winners were finally chosen. A big congratulations to 3rd place winner, Joe Bruster, with a ’79 Shovelhead Super Glide; 2nd Place Dave Mims with the 1929 Indian Scout; and 1st Place to Lane Allen with his ’82 Ironhead. One of the big surprises of the day, was a stunt rider show “Disturbing the Peace.” Riders, Seth Cohen and Billy Sweat are two young guys from Davie County, who have only been doing some stunt riding for 3 years. You couldn’t tell it as they rode and performed with adeptness and precision timing of someone with far more experience. Their bikes of choice for their performances are a 1985 FXR and a 2007 Dyna—modified of course. I expect we will see more from these guys in the future. Hungry? Well food truck Compass Rose from Farmington was on hand and did not disappoint. They were able to provide food and drink that was familiar but with a southern spin. If you get a chance, their fried bologna BLT is the best! Another feature that made this a great even was all the support Clemmons Motorcycles received from vendors and businesses such as Bassani Exhaust, Drag Specialties, Kuryakyn, Nelson Riggs, Metzler, Dunlop, Michelin tires, Cobra Exhaust, Leg-

end Suspension, Amsoil, Bel-Ray, Zangear, Cometic, and EBC brakes. These folks also made it possible to award many of the great door prizes drawn throughout the day. I believe that 2019 is the start of a great future for Kenny and Mary Ann Gilley as they establish Clemmons Motorcycles in their new location at 1320 Old Salisbury Road, in Winston-Salem, NC. After all they are widely known in this area for providing the best in customer service and truly intend to make sure you have the best riding experience possible. They can service metric, Harley-Davidson brand, and American custom motorcycles. In addition to regular routine service and repairs, performance work, custom builds, wheel lacing and truing are among many things they can do to make your bike run, look good and be the ride of your life. You can check them out online at their website www.clemmonsmotorcycles. com or on Facebook. But the best thing is just to go by their new place Tuesday-Saturday, 9am to 6pm.

N O S ID V A D Y E L R A H WOLF’S ‘78 LOW RIDER

Wolf won the Karney Law Firm Judged Class of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Bike Show at Tank Town Tavern’s 2nd Annual Spring Fever Bash this past April. Wolf bought this 1978 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead new for $4,500 and it has been his daily rider for 41 years. “It’s personal, it’s been through my life and I’ve been through it’s life, it’s has its beats and bruises, just like me” Wolf explained. Wolf believes in the old school way of biker life and has torn this bike down and rebuilt himself by memory with “No book, no video, no youtube, no nothing”. When asked if he ever thought about buying a newer bike Wolf said he had “never ever thought about having another motorcycle until I just get to the point where I can’t walk anymore and I need something that I can just get on and ride”. “I just love riding, I love being around my brothers and friends and I just love riding. Just that much.”

Wolf is the President and founder of Sons Of Soldiers MR, an organization made up of men and women to honor our vets. “It’s a part of helping our vets, the men and women today, the men and women from all the wars in the past.” The Sons of Soldiers visit VA Hospitals and provide care packages to our veterans, been a part of “welcome home” escorts when our soldiers come home and more. Southern Riders Motorcycle Club, Cumberland Co. Chapter 34th Anniversary Party By: Chi he Southern Riders Motorcycle Club (SRMC) Cumberland Co Chapter celebrated Thirty-four dedicated years on Saturday, June 1, 2019 . There was a celebration and party going on! The event and festivities started at 4 p.m. I’m not sure an end time was defined but the party continued! The SRMC Cumberland chapter was joined by many Southern Riders chapters as well as a number of other area motorcycle clubs. Everyone was there in celebration of the brotherhood of Southern Riders MC. When talking with club members about the importance of the celebration, they all echoed similar reports; The importance of this celebration is about brotherhood, community and commitment. The things that they are most proud of, encompass the days in between their anniversary parties! Their accomplishments include being actively involved in Cumberland County, the motorcycle world and the brotherhood. They discussed the efforts they have made to benefit Children, Veterans, and Individuals in the community. They do their part and partner with others to reach the same goal; the community coming together as a team. The Southern Riders MC, Cumberland Co Chapter are

T

pleased they can come together for a celebration like this. They say their justification for this celebration itself, is because of the other 364 days of the year. These days are filled with pride, charity, and dedication to brother and community. They aim to make a difference and inspire others to do the same. Also honorable, The Cumberland Co Chapter is noted as the oldest active Southern Riders Chapter. They are thankful and proud of all of their numerous accomplishments. They are all excited as they start yet another year of brotherhood together! As the evening went on there was lots to talk about future activities and dates that everyone should put on their calendar. These brothers are looking forward to many more anniversaries to come! Congratulations on an Excellent 34th Anniversary and Party!

Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson In June By: Chi Force ort Bragg Harley-Davidson started off the month of June with All American weekend. Amongst the celebrations, Christina Billings. performed several times throughout the day, drawing big crowds at each performance. She slung the bikes around quite a few times. No doubt, the girl has got skills! Zaxby’s sponsored a wing eating contest; every contestant was full of wing for sure! All this was going on to the sounds of Tim Cifer’s music. The tunes were going and during the breaks everyone had the opportunity to watch Ring Wars

Fayetteville Urban Ministries had several stations setup with vendors on the outside while Black Hive Ink & Art was set up in the Fort Bragg HOG Chapter Lounge; doing some great ink! some art that day! There’s always plenty to do at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson! The celebrations continued throughout the month with Military Appreciation Night, Father’s Day Celebration, the Bikini Bike Wash, Bike Night, Riding Academy Graduates, while ending the month with the used bike auction. It was another great month for Fort Bragg Harley- Davidson! I have pictures to prove it; Thanks for all the smiles! Each and every month, Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson hosts numerous benefits and rides as they show their support for community. So, here’s to giving back, I was just in time to witness the event. I saw the Buffalo Soldiers, Fayetteville Chapter gathered in the HOG Chapter Lounge as Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson was being awarded a plaque, acknowledging their service. North And South Carolina Waterfall Ride By: Bill Gallaway he Star Touring and Riding Chapter # 352 from Greenville, SC turned their monthly ride into a waterfall tour. On Saturday, May 18 there were 13 bikes and 17 riders that ventured out. This ride had to be rescheduled from May 11th due to rain, but this day, the weather was perfect for a mountain ride. The majority of riders left the Piedmont of SC at 8:30 a.m. to begin the ride thru the upstate through Clemson and Walhalla, up past the Wiginton overlook to a stop near Mountain Rest for a restroom and gas break at Tunnel Town Express. This was the last gas break before mov-

ing on to Highlands, NC where the group stopped to view Bridal Veil Falls. There were a lot of visitors there when we first arrived; however, after a short time we had the area to ourselves for photo opportunities. Finally, moving on, the next falls we visited was Dry Falls. After parking and a short walk to the viewing area, we saw the falls, which was far from being dry. I couldn’t believe the amount of water going over the falls! All along the way there were photo opportunities. After many selfies with the falls we saddled up and made our way to our lunch destination which was The Zookeepers Bistro. If you are going to the Cashiers, NC area, check out this great restaurant. I’ve been there many times for breakfast and

There is a nice view of the falls from a distance, and a great photo opportunity. Now, after a short break and a gas stop, It was time to head for home. 11th year that residents at Keowee Key in Salem, SC opened their homes up to about 35 servicemen and servicewomen from the Upstate Warriors and Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and six combat veterans from the Upstate. The combat vets consisted of two from the Army, two from the Navy and two from the Air Force. They arrived in the upstate of South Carolina on Monday June 17th to participate in a week of rest, relaxation and recognition. Simultaneously, on Monday, June 17th, over 125 motorcyclists also arrived at Southern Wesleyan University in Central, SC. This was the second year at this new staging area which made the ride to Keowee Key in Salem SC, much shorter than in previous years. The staging area has large trees to provide shade and food was provided by Pioneer College Caterers and beverages provided by Blue Hill Coffee & Tea Co. While the riders were waiting for the arrival of the Marines, they stayed busy visiting with the other riders and making new friends. This was the first escort for some of the riders that I talked to. The SWU location is a perfect staging area. As in the past, the bus arrived on time and we his year was the

comed by the attendees with many thanks, handshakes and hugs. After about 10 minutes, they began boarding the Jeeps provided by the Upstate Legends Jeep Club for the welcoming parade to Keowee Key. The motorcyclists, escorted with the assistance of local police, led the motorcade of Marines to Keowee Key, and onward to Duke Energy’s World of Energy in Salem, SC. Those that rode the 40 mile route experienced partly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 90’s with high humidity. It was hot but the least we could do for those who go into dangerous situations for us on a daily basis. The route from Central, SC traveled through Clemson, Seneca and Salem where they were greeted by hundreds of flag-waving Americans who were showing their support for these Marines, Warriors, and all those that put their lives on the line every day. This year,24 host families welcomed the Marines into their homes for four days of recreation and relaxation. The 2019 group of 35 also included 9 spouses. As the warriors went to their respective hosts’ homes, the riders’ day ended with a recognition supper with all the fixings for the cyclists and jeep drivers at the Light House Cabana Restaurant on Lake Keowee. The spouses that are supporting their Marines by keeping the home fires burning while they are deployed are again this year being shown some recognition. While they were here, they got to do archery, play golf and tennis, swim, fish, water ski, and go tubing. In between, they visited with their host families and attended some local Veterans’ recognition events. On Thursday morning, they enjoyed a breakfast out and a trip to Clemson University where they learned about the school’s military heritage as well as a visit to Memorial Stadium, home of college footballs’ National Champions. They went across the street; slapped Howard’s Rock and ran down the hill. It was a great experience to be remembered. This event is made possible by the following: The Keowee Key community, Duke Energy, The Lighthouse Restaurant, PRISMA Health and Southern Wesleyan University, many thanks go out to all others involved in this event. “Semper Fi”.

scene. Unwilling to leave any living witnesses behind, ol’ Artie had no choice but to strangle the produce manager as well. However, unknown to Artie, the entire proceedings were captured by the hidden security cameras & observed by the store’s security guard, who immediately called the police. Artie was caught & arrested before he could even leave the store. Under intense questioning at the police station, Artie revealed the whole sordid plan, including his unusual financial arrangements with the hapless husband who was also quickly arrested. The next day in the newspaper, the headline declared. ‘Artie chokes 2 for $1.00 at Wal-Mart!’

A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. He seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. The case came up in court. The Judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself. The young man replied, “Well your Honor, it was like this: when the lady got on the bus, I couldn’t help but notice her condition. She sat under a sweets sign that said, “The Double Mint Twins are Coming” and I grinned. Then she moved and sat under a sign that said “Logan’s Liniment will reduce the swelling”, and I had to smile. Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said “William’s Big Stick Did the Trick”, and I could hardly contain myself. But, your Honor, when she moved for the fourth time and sat under the sign that said “Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident”..I just lost it.” “CASE DISMISSED!!” A Columbia, SC couple drove their car to the shopping center, only to have it break down in the parking lot. The husband told his wife to carry on with her shopping while he fixed the car. The wife returned later to see a small group of people near the car. On closer inspection, she saw a pair of hairy legs protruding from under the chassis. Unfortunately, although the man was wearing shorts and his lack of underpants turned his private parts into glaringly public ones. Unable to stand the embarrassment, the wife dutifully stepped forward and quickly put her hand up his shorts, and tucked everything back in place. When she stood back up, she looked across the

During these serious times, people of all faiths should remember these four basic religious truths: 1. Muslims do not recognize Jews as God’s chosen people. 2. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah. 3. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian world. 4. Southern Baptists do not recognize each other at Hooters.

Tired of constantly being broke & stuck in an unhappy marriage, a young husband decided to solve both problems by taking out a large insurance policy on his wife with himself as the beneficiary, and then arranging to have her killed. A ‘friend of a friend’ put him in touch with a nefarious dark-side underworld figure that went by the name of ‘Artie.’ Artie then explained to the husband that his going price for snuffing out a spouse was $5,000. The husband said he was willing to pay that amount, but that he wouldn’t have any cash on hand until he could collect his wife’s insurance money. Artie insisted on being paid at least something up front, so the man opened his wallet, displaying the single dollar bill that rested inside. Artie sighed, rolled his eyes, & reluctantly agreed to accept the dollar as down payment for the dirty deed. A few days later, Artie followed the man’s wife to the local Super Wal-Mart store. There, he surprised her in the produce department & proceeded to strangle her with his gloved hands & as the poor unsuspecting woman drew her last breath & slumped to the floor. The manager of the produce department stumbled unexpectedly onto the murder

A woman brought her very limp pet duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, “I’m sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away.” The distressed woman wailed, “Are you sure?” “Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead,” replied the vet. “How can you be so sure?” she protested. “I mean you haven’t done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something.” The vet rolled his eyes, turned around, and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck’s owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, “I’m sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck.” The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman. The duck’s owner, still in shock, took the bill. “$150!” she cried, “$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!” The vet shrugged, “I’m sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it’s now $150.”

Carolina Blue skies at Denton Farm Park, NC, for the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s 10th Southern National Meet the middle of May. I’ll take hot and sunny over rain any day when enjoying motorcycles. Not only were there lots of cool old machines to check out, but there were plenty of bikes and parts for sale, too. For ten years the three sponsoring AMCA chapters; Blue Ridge, Dixie and Catawba Valley; picked the perfect place since Denton Farm Park enhances the antique experience with several old buildings featuring historical equipment and machinery, plus antique train rides. The Southern National Meet is a little different than some biker weekends. Since it’s mainly a Friday and Saturday event. Lots of us are digging through boxes Friday. For y’all who want to check out the meet and activities, you can ride in Saturday morning and enjoy it in one day. Sunday is for judging the bikes seeking recognition of their restoration or originality. ikers were blessed with clear

The AMCA meet at Denton ain’t a snobby gathering of guys with high-dollar antiques. It is for y’all with clean old machines you found in a shed or the project bike you’d rather ride than restore. Motorcycles 35 years old are considered antiques. Each year has a theme. 2019 was the 70th Anniversary of the Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide. Saturday night the banquet speaker was a famous drag racer whose book is reviewed in this issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Pete Hill entertained folks with stories of his decades of drag racing a Supercharged Knucklehead up into the Evolution Era. I remember those days. Hearing Pete’s bike fire up, with a unique cackle, and leaning on the fence to watch and feel it make a pass. As more folks realize what goes on at Denton, more who

come for the whole weekend. That gives them more time for checking out the vendors and the, bikes and hanging with friends. Camping at Denton Farm Park is nice with acres of cool, shady woods. I know you can buy everything online these days, but a real swap meet still has its advantages. Online you hope the part is what they claim and what you need. Buying in person at Denton you can examine the part, haggle with the seller and sometimes get an interesting story, too. For ten years, Meet Chairman, Bob Aton, has done a great job building an event praised by bikers from all over the country. They often compliment Bob and the staff on hosting such a cool meet. Between the historical site and the Southern hospitality the meet brings people back year after year. This year there must have been nearly 200 vendors.

“Hard to believe it’s been ten years!” Bob said. “I’d have to count it a success. Our buyers continue to come, which increases our vendor count each year. That’s the thing we’re the happiest about. The Success of the meet depends on vendors. They’re all happy. We are continuously told we have the best venue on the national scene. We’re looking forward to the next ten years hosting the AMCA Southern National Meet.” Yes, there are lots of Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, Nortons and the bikes we are used to seeing at antique meets. But the Japanese bikes and parts vendors are increasing, too. With so much to see and do at Denton I’m going to break it down into sensory and physical aspects. Yes, every AMCA meet is a day of sensual experiences. I’ve been to all ten meets and even at the rainy ones it’s sensory overload.

Denton -- Sights, Sounds And Smells From the moment your turn into the Farm Park, you begin to see why this is such a cool place for the antique motorcycle meet. The property has few modern buildings and lots of old machines and tractors and such on display. An old train runs around the park. Soon your senses are immersed in the meet, motorcycles and parts as far as you can see. Knuckles and Pans and ShovContinued On Page #54

Continued From Page #53 els Oh My! There were lots of old motorcycles there for sale at very reasonable prices, too. The Bikes The reason we gathered at Denton was for antique motorcycles. There are so many bikes that I miss checking out and photographing way more than ones I do. So many that I see go riding by and hope I can talk about later. You can see and talk to the owners of all kinds of bikes in various conditions. Running And Riding Not all bikes at Denton are sitting for display. Most are running and riding around the Farm Park. Saturday’s activities started with the Antique Bike Road Run through the beautiful Carolina countryside. Yes, folks get out and ride the curvy, hilly country roads on antique motorcycles. Concourse D’Ordinaire This is a bike show for the common bike. Any bike could enter as long as it was old and it ran. This is a cool little show with awards for things like Least Chrome to Most Cobbled. The show is one more chance to display bikes we have ad-

mired all day, from the perfect restorations to rusty relicts. Winners were: Cutest Bike, Scott Brinkley, 1971 Honda Mini 50; Least Chrome, Gerald Pacholke, 1974 Bultaco; Least Original, David Duncan, Yamaha 400; Most Chrome, Gary Clodfelter, 1981 H-D FLH with Sidecar; Most Cobbled, “Mouse,” Honda SOHC 750 “Mistress”; Most Rustic, Gerald Pacholke, 1964 Honda CA95; Oldest Bike, Dennis Lutman, 1940 Indian 640B; and Ugly But Beautiful was World Traveler Doug Wothke’s 1941 Indian Four. Museum Pieces Some folks expect to see lots of beautiful museum quality motorcycles cruising the Farm Park. There are some – perfect original, fresh restored, made from old parts bikes there. They stand out like jewels because those bikes are actually the minority. Oh yes, we love them and crowds gather to photograph and ask about the shiny old machines. You can imagine the work and love that went into those bikes.

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

Ratty Old Bikes Most of the bikes at the AMCA meet were less than museum quality. Lots of motorcycles that have obviously been ridden for a long lifetime. They range from fairly well maintained to rusty rat bikes. Faded paint, rust and grease are cool now. It Even has a fancy name, “patina”. Imagine rebuilding an engine and trying not to get it too clean! And those old Shovelheads, Pans, Knucks, Indians, Brit Bikes or whatever start with a kick and run fine. Japanese Bikes Yep, Those bikes so many folks learned on and had when they were young are now antiques. Every year more imports show up for sale and more vendors with parts for them. I made the leap to Harleys young. After only a few small imports. Dissed Jap bikes for years. Now I own several of the fun bikes from when I was young. There are lots of low miles, excellent condition import bikes coming out of garages these days. When a cherry KZ 900, CB 750, GT 550, CT 110, Super Cub, or some model of Japanese motorcycle that you’ve never seen rides by, yours and other heads turn. Choppers Who would expect to see so many choppers at the antique meet? I would. We old guys built choppers a long time ago, so those bikes are now antiques, too. Guys still build choppers from antique motorcycles. Some were original, old Pan and Knucklehead bikes built many years ago. The paint and molding may be cracked but they are still very cool bikes. One of the young guys there with a newly built Shovelhead chopper impressed me as I looked over his bike. He told me where the old parts came from and how he machined and modified them. And how about David who has built choppers a few times from parts he bought at Denton. Yeah, he buys a frame, front end, motor and more from vendors there. The next year, that man is riding what he built from those parts.

Really Cherry Bikes Some bikes there are low-miles preserved time machines. You will see rare, old Harleys that still have some Milwaukee air in the tires. And quick imported machines that scared the first buyer and wound up sitting for decades. The warning stickers still fresh and readable on the bike. Perfectly restored machines are at Denton to show off and later be judged. Really Rare Bikes At the AMCA Southern National Meet you will see motorcycles that you may have only read about. From really old to that beautiful restored 1976 Harley Dresser. Motorcycles that only a few examples are known to survive. And they might start and run. There are odd foreign bikes that weren’t sold in America. There were lots of bikes that made folks say, “I’ve never seen one of those. Wow! there were so many awesome machines at Denton. That 1983 CB1000C was like seeing a unicorn. Berry showed me how stock, original the machine is, Told me how proud he is to be the custodian of such a rare machine and hopes his kids are the caretakers of it in the future. But Tim from Salisbury brought an old Triumph Drag Bike. His machine got lots of attention and he had some stories to tell with it. History In Motion If you can only spend an hour at Denton, be there for the History in Motion narrated parade of antique motorcycles. Riders line up and wait their turn to pull up to a spot, surrounded by folks, while each bike is described. This year, Fred “Crash” Davis, chairman of the Wauseon National Meet in Ohio was the narrator. History In Motion gives owners a chance to show and tell about their bike. Bikes you saw riding by and wondered about. Fred knew several of the machines and sometimes told even more about them.

the wind on front fenders. Come to Denton and see all kinds of cool or odd motorcycle accessories and attachments. The custom made seat rails with hometown, club, bikes’ name, whatever artwork could take a while to shoot. I look at some old motorcycles, personalized and ridden many miles, and wish I could talk to the man, or woman, who loved that machine. It’s a shame that bike can’t tell all the stories that are part of it. Souvenirs bolted on long ago are just the headlines to campfire stories! The Smells

Theme Bikes Each year there is a theme at Denton. This year it was the 70th Anniversary of the Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide. Yeah, there were lots of cool old Panheads there. Everything from original bikes to restored to choppers. More Pans for sale, too, than I bet you see at most regular motorcycle events. Fender Ornaments And Seat Rails And other doo dads. One of these days I’m going to concentrate on photographing the things mounted on fenders and all over motorcycles. Lots of old pot metal airplanes are in

Antique motorcycles have so many wonderful smells. As you walk Denton Farm Park you will smell the trees and those real tasty fried bologna sandwiches. But the smells of fuel, oil, grease are kinda tasty, too! Stale fuel and burning oil are usually bad smells, but at Denton they can make you smile. Oh that bike is running rich, or with the choke on to make it run. You’ll smell an old bike you’re looking at and remember the smell of Papa’s shop and the bike he had like that. A two stroke will ride by trailing the scent of castrol oil and you’ll have a flashback to your dirt biking or road racing days. Take a minute and smell the bikes around the Farm Park. Tastes Sometimes the scent of old motorcycles is so thick you can taste it. I suggest you wash that down with the peach ice cream Continued On Page #60

Continued From Page #57 by the main gate. To stay with the antique theme, they make the ice cream on site with a running hit and miss motor. The Farm Park food vendor has lots of great stuff. Order the fried bologna sandwich with lots of fixins and a Cheerwine to drink. If a local biker camped near you offers livermush for breakfast you better take two pieces since it will all be gone when you want more. And do not get involved in a “which-brandof-livermush-is-best” fight. Vendors Sure you can buy parts online. But nothing compares to examining parts in your hand and talking to the person selling. Most of the vendors at Denton have moved into the wooded, shaded area. Great! I will still checkout the guys in the field. That area works fine and I’m riding all over the farm park, anyway. But I’m camped in the shade and it’s nice to shop in the shade. I don’t know how many other meets have that kind of layout, but most I’ve seen at fairgrounds you are baking in the sun. Denton is simply Southern Cool!

And feel free to use your motorcycle, minibike, little red wagon or whatever to cruise the grounds and vendors. Events with lots of restrictions are tough for us old guys to get around and carry the stuff we buy. Looks like the number of vendors continues to increase each year, too. This year, it seemed to me there were more “project- to- complete” motorcycles for sale. Denton was the place to be for y’all who brought cash and a trailer. There was everything from lots of Japanese dirt bikes and little street bikes to plenty of Pans and Shovels and European machines and rare, really old bikes For Sale. Guys And Gals From Different Kinds Of Motorcycling As soon as I arrived at the first Southern National Meet at Denton ten years ago, I started seeing friends from all kinds of motorcycling and related activities. I found out that some Harley drag racing buddies are big into antique bikes. Bikers I know from other kinds of racing, safety training, motorcyclists’ rights, and off-roading were there. It’s good to see those friends that you only see once or twice a year. And I was glad to see local buddies who ain’t been to Denton in a while and have old bikes. Joe gets my personal ‘Hard Luck’ –“Maybe” Award. When he pulled up in front of our booth there was white stuff on his pretty black Panhead. It caught on fire at the gas stop. They put it out. Just a burnt spark plug wire to tape up and Joe rode it on in to Denton. Kinda Famous Folks And some really famous ones, too. I’m talking more famous than Ramsey Allen who seems to be all over the farm park. There are the Motor Maids looking sharp as they ride in. Some of those people at Denton are celebrities in our world and others. That guy that you are talking to might be a famous restorer, racer, museum director, or someone else significant to motorcycling. The lady telling you about her bike might be a famous writer, actress or rock star. Those folks love old motorcycles, too! Being in NASCAR country, it’s common to see drivers and crew members at events. Those, “Guys back in the shop.” Who built race cars and engines are old motorheads and enjoy Denton. Those are the guys telling stories to a group of us at any time or place during the meet. Young Folks I’m so glad to see young people at Denton. We need to cultivate the love of antique motorcycles to ensure the AMCA

survives and grows. From the 12-year-old girl riding Dad’s old Honda, to the young teen going through the boxes that will someday be his first bike, the 20-something guy loading the Panhead he just bought, to the Chopper Guys, I try to tell them how welcome they are at The AMCA Southern National Meet. I know many of y’all see yourselves in the young folks who are seriously shopping the Denton vendors. Now, we laugh about those broke young guys since we have for years dealt with bikers who have money and lots of bikes. But remember when we were the broke, young guys trying to build our dream machines? Or trying to build something we could sell to buy a better bike? So, please welcome them, appreciate whatever machine they ride and help them enjoy it. Warping Time I say my fast Jap Bike warps time and space when it scares me, but the AMCA Southern National Meet at Denton Farm Park really affects your perception of time. Motorcycling has changed styles and fads throughout all my life, but there has been a certain constant in the antique world. We ride bikes that our grandfathers rode. We ride bikes that were new when we were young. I even leave the stock air box and pipes on them now. I don’t know if it’s that because we are stuck in the past or because old motorcycles are great therapy, but I saw lots of smiles at Denton as people enjoy an afternoon a few decades back in time. Stories Around The Camp You could wear out a tape recorder trying to capture all the great stories told at Denton; The guys who still have their old Harley or Indian they bought decades ago; how long it took to restore this cool bike. Stories of old races and rides. And they go on and on. The history of American motorcycling was relived many times at the 10th Annual AMCA Southern National Meet under the Denton Farm Park’s shade trees. National Awards Some riders were recognized for certain accomplishments. Richard Watson rode the most miles to Denton. He logged 740 miles on his 1951 Indian Chief. He regularly rides to meets from his home in Michigan. Second Longest Distance Ridden Award goes to Boyce McConnell at 600 miles and Third was Steve Powell with 500 miles. Rick Clevenger brought the Oldest Bike a 1917 Indian. Thomas Bradley took the First Most Unique Bike honor with his 1958 Indian Hounds Arrow. Second Most Unique was a machine I real dug, Berry Watkins’ immaculate 1983 Honda CB1000C. The AMCA Southern National meet is the Carolinas’ event you must attend if you are into the history of motorcycles. Bikers can check out historic machines and spend hours talking to the guys who saved and restored them. You will see some of the oldest motorcycles running and rideable. You can buy bikes and parts to start your own project. To see more of the photos Molly, Zoe, Lincoln and I shot go to www.fullthrottlemagazine.com. I wonder what cool stories you can tell about Denton next year.

Bros And Bro-ettes,

H

Rough Times

ave you ever been down and out struggling with something?

You’ve prayed about it and you still feel like the Lord is not listening. The Lord is listening, but He doesn’t always answer when we think He should, He’ll answer in His time. June 13 will be 13 years since the Lord took Tank home to be with Him. I wasn’t ready but the Lord needed him more than I did. I had some really bad times and had to face a lot of stuff by myself. But I couldn’t have made it without the Lord’s help and family and friends and lots of prayers. I Told the Lord I was through with any kind of ministry work and that I wasn’t even going to go to church, Enough was enough! Believe you, me. You don’t tell the Lord what you will or won’t do! Ministry work is going full blast. And I can say, “I really enjoy doing it.” I’ve learned that walking by faith and doing the will of God is better than going it on your own. He sometimes places you in the midst of Spiritual Battles and stuff to see what you’ll do and how you handle it. Not only me, but we all face some kinds of battles. You may think that battle should be over with by now. But remember, only in God’s time. You may know someone that is facing some rough times now and wonder what you should do. You need to pray for them and go talk to them and ask what else you can do for them. Let them know they’re not alone. Be sure to remind

them of the sweetness of victory when the battle IS FINALLY over. Hebrews 10: 25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching”. Exhort means to urge, advise, in a mild and good-willed manner: Here’s a prayer to pray: Lord, today I want to be used. Help me to encourage someone today. I ask you to lead me to those you want me to encourage. Show me what to say and how to say it and when. Teach me to recognize the needs in others and not to focus only on my needs. Thank you, Jesus. Sunday, June 2nd at Double D Burnout Saloon in Kernersville for a benefit ride to help a friend with medical bills. This ride was put together by friends, but as always, the bikers and even strangers came out to support and open their hearts to someone in need. “Shakey” was burning branches and the fire got out of control. He received 2nd and 3rd degree burns over his legs. He has already had 3 skin grafts, and Doctors say recovery time will be up to a year. The ride began at Double D Burnout Saloon, going to Early Times, Xtreme Wings, Ole Watering Hole and back to Double where there was a great band: “Waist High Weeds” to entertain, a, 50/50, and something new to me: a Chinese Auction. Tickets could be purchased for the Chinese Auction. Donated items were displayed on a table. Under each item was a bag On the bag each item was described. You put your tickets in the bag under the item you wanted to win. If your ticket was chosen you got the item. I thought this was a great idea. riends and family came together on

Ride Of Pride 2019

By: Gary Steelman he 17th Annual Ride of Pride was held May 23rd at the Cleveland, NC location of Freightliner, a division of Daimler Trucks North America(DTNA). There were around 200 bikes assembled in the front parking lot. The ceremony began with Eric Johnson recognizing Gully Transport, and Crete Carriers as partners in the Ride of Pride trucks this year. This year’s trucks are special as one commemorates the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The largest operation in the history of America’s combined military forces. The Purple Heart and Medal of Honor truck is sponsored by Cargo Transporters, their fifth Ride of Pride tractor since 2010. This truck is aptly named “Courage”. Gully Transport has named the truck “Golden Warrior” in honor of Gold Star families and the warriors lost in service. This Western Star unit is dedicated to the memory of Jeffery D. Walker. This year marks the first year Freightliner Cleveland gets to keep one of the trucks at the plant. This truck is dedicated to those still missing and still serving, those not forgotten and still not home. These trucks serve as a reminder that freedom is not free but offered at a cost of sacrifice and service. Rolling Thunder has escorted the trucks every year to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial since 2001 on Memorial Day for the annual Rolling Thunder event in Washington D.C. These trucks help bring to mind that the reason for the

T

67

holiday is to honor and remember the fallen warriors, and their families who made the sacrifice to keep America safe, whole, and free. This is said to be the last year of Rolling Thunder, but we’ll see. The Freightliner trucks, The Ride of Pride and Ride of Honor will be making the trek back to the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial next year. Expect to see more Ride of Pride trucks in the coming years. The dedication of Freightliner and their partners will continue the tradition of The Ride of Pride.

4th Annual South East Five Star Event Picnic

By: Bill Gallaway n Saturday, May 11th, Star members from North and South Carolina and Georgia braved the rain and gathered at Croft State Park in Spartanburg, SC. Where in the past there have been close to 60 bikes, at this event there were only 5 bikes. Everyone else came in a cage. The event was called the 4th Annual South East Five Star Event Picnic. We had the normal picnic fixins, hot dogs, burgers, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mustard, ketchup, baked beans, chips and cookies. This event was for the purpose of recognizing the 5 riders from each chapter with the most miles ridden during the 2018/2019 event challenge. The competition begins May 1st each year and at the completion of the challenge, the top five riders with the highest mileage in their Chapter will be counted in the Five Star Event. This has the members in each Chapter competing against each other. Then the top five from each Chapter compete against the top five of all the other Chapters. Unfortunately, I wasn’t one of the top 5 riders this year. Just too much rain for me, so I missed a few rides. Every year the event has grown starting with just North and South Carolina and now having some Georgia riders. There were Star members from Lumberton, NC, Sumter, Beaufort, Columbia, Greenville SC and Lawrenceville GA. There were approximately 60 members in attendance. It was a great op-

O

portunity to socialize and meet and greet for all in attendance, even if they were not one of the high mileage riders. There were four Chapters with high mileage riders. To enter the competition, riders register their starting mileage on May 1st and make a $10.00 donation, which goes to the Star Family Foundation. The High Mileage winners were as follows. Fourth Place Went to the Sumter Chapter 466 with 24,733 miles. The Third place Winning Chapter was Greenville, SC with 26,185 miles. The Second Place Chapter was Lawrenceville, GA Chapter 421 with 45,949 miles and the First Place winner was Columbia Chapter 424 with 54,546 miles. Individual High Mileage riders were Fourth Place Mike Griswold with 14,768, Third Place Mark Siecinski with 15,038 miles, Second Place Steve Anderjack Sr. at 15,159 miles and First Place award went to Richard Martin who rode 15,578 miles. Many thanks go to Reggie Brewer, who organized the event and picnic, and everyone else involved in making the event a fun day for all. 2019 Kings Mountain Annual Memorial Day Event By: Wally Wersching asked Cindy if she wanted to go to the Annual Kings Mountain Memorial Day event at the Veterans Monument in the Mountain Rest Cemetery at 10:00am, and she said, “Yes”. I went last year, but it was rained out. This year, it was sunny and hot. The temperatures were going to be in the 90’s by the afternoon. We left home at 9:15am heading east from Shelby. It was cool and comfortable. There was almost no traffic. We were looking forward to honoring our fallen veterans. We arrived at the cemetery at about 9:40am and there were already quite a lot of people standing around in the shade. The sun was getting a little warm. After we parked, we walked to a shady spot where Cindy could see the stage clearly. I brought a very comfortable folding chair for her. We looked around the beautiful cemetery. Flags were placed on all the veteran’s graves. It was a very solemn sight. There was a gentle breeze, so the flags were waving. There was a group of bikers from the American Legion Riders in Kings Mountain. I talked with them for a short time and gave them copies of “The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine” to share amongst themselves. There were also a few classic cars parked around the cemetery. I asked if they were part of a car club but was told that they were not.

I

The theme for the ceremony was “Thank You” to all the fallen veterans. The Loch Norman Pipers played their bagpipes to start the ceremony. They came all the way from Lake Norman, NC. They looked very Scottish in their kilts. After the Mayor of Kings Mountain, Scott Neisler spoke, the Kings Mountain Police Department Honor Guard presented the Colors. Kings Mountain Police Chief, Lisa Proctor, delivered the invocation. She sounded like a very strong lady Abraham Ruff (USA) then recited the Toast to the Flag. Most people have never heard it before. The “Pledge of Allegiance” was recited by Cub Scout Pack 92 Central United Methodist Church. Everyone in attendance recited the pledge with them. Skylar Smith sang “God Bless America” and “God Bless the USA”. The last time I remember hearing Lee Greenwood sing “God Bless the USA” was at Stone Mountain, Georgia when they had the laser light show on the side of the huge stone with the Confederate Memorial carving that depicts Civil War generals Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, plus President Jefferson Davis. It is a very patriotic song that moves me. The featured speaker was Ronnie Roach, Commander, Army of Northern Virginia. When he spoke, he touched everyone in the crowd with his sincere words of courage and valor. He got emotional when he spoke about two of his friends that have their names on the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Wall and how they didn’t get the chance to come home, and have the life that they were fighting for. Skylar sang another song – “God Bless America”. She has a very beautiful voice even though the sound system was generating a lot of feedback. Mayor Neisler presented the wreath. Then the KMPD Honor guard removed the Colors. Then the Marine Corps League fired the three volleys. The ceremony ended by the playing of Taps. The pipers played another number. It was a very solemn ceremony in honor of our fallen veterans. We were glad that we attended. After we left, we drove to the local Showmars restaurant for a delicious lunch. It was a great way to spend a meaningful Memorial Day morning.

Lauren Elizabeth Cobb 1985-2019

By Scott Wicker auren Elizabeth Cobb, 33, of Burlington, passed away Thursday, May 2nd, 2019. A native of Alamance County, Lauren was the daughter of William “Lin” Cobb and Breta Clayton Cobb. Lauren was the owner of The Old Ski Lodge and Crossroads Tavern and a former teacher’s assistant. Lauren would always be the first person to plan and organize motorcycle charity rides and benefits for people that had suffered tragedies in their lives and she was never seen without her “backwards” cap on. In addition to her parents Lin and Breta Cobb, of the home, Lauren is survived by her sister, Lindsey Cobb Thompson and her husband, Daniel, of Burlington, her brother, Clay Cobb and his wife Jessie, of Raleigh; two special nephews, Jett and Ridge Thompson and her loving dog, Gunner. Her nephew Jett said she loved me more than anybody else! She never placed herself first. She

L

was all about family and gave to those in need. She was very kind hearted. She did benefits for people she didn’t even know. She once helped raise money for a young man’s funeral. She loved hockey and Britney Spears and was a very successful business woman. She was full of life and she put her heart into everything. She once helped save a fallen biker, Charlie Windham, near her bar, Crossroads Tavern, in southern Caswell County. Lauren was non-judgmental. With Lauren, you were always welcome. She could fix customers with bad attitudes. In a world where it is easy to knock someone when they are down, Lauren would pick them up. Lauren and her father, Lin, were very close. Mr. Cobb said, “She could talk me into most anything”. No one could ever tell her “NO”. Lauren and her father would talk about planning events and benefits and after he left, he would say, “Well, She conned me into it again”! With Lauren, You Never had the Final Word! At Lauren’s Celebration of Life, over 200 people came out on motorcycles along with many others. Gerald King and Eddie Christmas helped organize the ride. FOX 8 News out of High Point was there to honor Lauren. People from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia came to honor this special young lady along with the bikers, teachers, and kids. Lauren’s family said the outpouring of love from everyone gives hope and faith in humanity. The stories and memories of Lauren will never end! Lauren’s Dad, Lin, recalled his most memorable one of all. Lauren could be a prankster he said. One night, Mr. Cobb came home late after a business meeting. He went to each of his children’s bedrooms to tuck them in. He got to Lauren’s room. Lauren slept in the bottom bunk of a bunk bed. He leaned over to give Lauren a kiss and was startled and raised up quickly and hit his head hard on the rail of the top bunk. Startled, he heard Lauren, in the corner of her bedroom, Laughing her butt off. She had put her blonde haired baby doll in her bed to fool her daddy! Lauren was loved by many people. Her Mom and Dad said it was an honor to be Lauren’s parents. Lauren loved her sister Lindsey, her brother Clay and her nephews Jett and Ridge. Lauren’s family and friends are planning to hold The 1st Annual Lauren’s Ride. A benefit ride to be held October 19th. Lauren touched the lives of many people. I never saw her without a smile on her face and her trademark hat on backwards. Her memory will last forever and will never die.
