ell, it is finally summer and our weather has been really pleasant; not too hot, not a lot of rain, and no more cold! I hope May was a good month for riding where you live, too. Nothing, except riding myself, gives me more pleasure than to watch people having fun and if that includes a motorcycle it is an extra bonus. Last weekend I attended the Memorial Day parade in Thomasville and shared my civic pride with young and old alike. I was very proud of all those who participated for their service and of the spectators, too for their respect. Governor Pat McCrory was the Grand Marshall and I was thankful for the effort that he made to be there. I also went to the first day at the local swim club that my son belongs to. It was Deja Vu all over again as I watched little blue lipped kids with swimmies on their arms repeatedly jump in the cold water. It doesn’t seem like it could be that long ago that our kids were hollering, “Dad, watch this” at the pool. The Thunder In The Smokies rally was great again this year with better than average weather and turn out. The riders were lovin’ it! At the AMCA Southern National Swap Meet at Denton Farm Park people rode antique motorcycles on a ride through the countryside and around and around the park. They were just enjoying riding their motorcycles and I was enjoying being part of that and witnessing their joy as well as hearing those old motorcycles run. The point that I am getting at is to get out there and seize the day (carpe diem) because as Seals & Crofts aptly sang, “We may never pass this way again”.

Cape Fear Harley-Davidson Open House

Fayetteville, NC As it is every year, the first Saturday in May was the Open House for Cape Fear Harley-Davidson in Fayetteville, NC. May 3rd was a great day for bikers, the weather was great, nice and sunny. It all started early that morning. It went on all day long. There was free food and drinks, free bike inspections compliments of Cape Fear Harley-Davidson. They had several contests that day, which was really fun and exciting for the crowd. They consisted of a beard and mustache contest, a beer belly contest, a leg contest, and a back tattoo contest. All held on stage for all to enjoy and watch. Believe me, it was very entertaining! The marching band from Gray’s Creek High School in Hope Mills performed the National Anthem for the day. A total of 42 vendors were on site that day with great variety of items to show, share, and sell. The children had fun as well with bouncy houses and cotton candy, face painting and games. Each year, they give away a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and this year Matt Locklear was the winner of the 2014 HarleyDavidson Sportster - XL 883N Iron 883. I know several people had tickets for this great give away but there could only be one lucky winner. Congratulations, Matt. There were also 2 beautiful Harley quilts raffled off. Make sure you mark your calendar for June 28th; Cape Fear Harley Davidson will be holding a Public Service Safety day with Police, Firemen, EMT’s to help demonstrate some safety things you may want to know. Spring Open House At Ray Price Harley-Davidson/Triumph By: David Ward Raleigh, NC -, 2014 – Although the rain on April 22nd made the ride to the Dealership less enjoyable, the attendance at Ray Price’s Spring Open House still managed to exceed 1500 people including several riders who braved the conditions. The day started off with the usual free coffee and hot Krispy Kreme donuts to warm stomachs up and offset the chilly, wet weather as competitors registered their bikes for our bike show. The bike show included 3 industry-leading professional bike builders: KW Customs of Benson, Back Yard Baggers of WinstonSalem, and Crazy Beaver Customs of Clayton, NC along with numerous private owners with quality custom bikes. The results of the judging that took place are as follows: Best Bagger - Kenny Williams, KW Customs 2005 Road King (A.K.A. Kryptonite); Best Non-Bagger - Bob Harten, 1996 Fat Boy; Best Sportster - Abel Diaz, 2008 Nightster; People’s Choice - Bob Harten, 1996 Fat Boy; Honorable Mention - Joey Hensley, Back Yard Baggers 1994 Electra Glide. We had a fashion show comprised of professional models and a few members of our H.O.G. chapter that featured lots of items from our MotorClothes department. This show was quite the crowd-pleaser with an ENCORE presentation that took place later in the day. Throughout the day there was fantastic music by Somethin’ 4 Tha People and vendors selling a wide variety of both motorcycle and non-motorcycle related items and BBQ from Ole’

6th Annual Michael “Boz” Kerr Bikers Inside The Beltway By: Jeff Hennie MRF VP of Government Relations and Public Affairs, Beth Gorman Assistant MRF Rep for NC, George Gorman, Legislative Officer Chatham County CBA ABATE, Ralph Bell, SC ABATE State Coordinator, and Chad Fuller, McGrath & Danielson This year was another highly successful Motorcycle Riders Foundation (www. mrf.org) event in our Nation’s Capital. We were blessed with perfect weather on May 14th and a robust number of citizen motorcycle lobbyists on the most important day of the year for motorcyclists.   Motorcyclists from Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin were in attendance. This year’s event resulted in nearly 250 individual meetings with Senate and House offices in Washington, DC to advance the MRF agenda. The event also coincided with the introduction by The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee of a portion of the highway legislation that expires at the end the fiscal year, September 30th. Their portion of the highway bill does not affect us, but this does show that Congress has begun in earnest to work on the much needed highway bill.   CBA ABATE of North Carolina has sent two representatives to lobby for bills in Congress during the MRF Bikers inside the Beltway event. Many of us have been waiting for years for some of this legislation to move and there is an appearance that legislative action may be forthcoming before the November election in 2014. We started off the day by meeting with the MRF staff at the motorcycle parking area in front of the Capitol Building at 9 AM. After receiving information to distribute, we set out to keep the appointments that we made and drop off information to the individual congressional representative’s offices that did not respond to our original requests for appointments. We met with staff in all 12 congressional offices. Most of the people we met with were the transportation or legislative assistants. We also met with both of our NC Senator’s staff. The responses that we did receive from the staff were very optimistic and favorable towards our legislation HR1861 and S2078 (motorcycle checkpoints), HR875 (ethanol blended fuel), and HR2414 & S1295 (black box privacy ownership). Most were very surprised to hear about the CDC involvement with pushing for a federal motorcycle helmet law, which is

also included in the Obama’s Grow America Act (section 4004 of Obama’s transportation reauthorization proposal), which seems to have little or no support in the House or the Senate. senate.gov This year’s Congressional program was held on the Senate side of Capitol Hill. The attendees heard from Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), author of S. 2078, the Senate bill to end the funding of motorcycle only roadside checkpoints. Senator Shaheen told the group how happy she was to help end this unnecessary discrimination of motorcyclists. The group of motorcycle lobbyists also heard from Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) the lead republican on S. 2078, who gave an impassioned speech about how important it is to fight for freedom and reminded the group that they are part of a small group of Americans who actually fight for their freedoms.   This year’s Bikers Inside The Beltway was a tremendous success. The MRF thanks all of those who attended from near and far to defend liberty. 17th Annual Freedom Memorial Wall Dedication By: Caroline In 1998, Curly and Laura Williams wanted to make a way for folks to remember their motorcycle friends and family so the Freedom Memorial Wall concept was born. Since that time the first Sunday in May has been Freedom Memorial Wall Dedication Sunday. Friends and family gather to remember their loved ones whose names are inscribed on the wall. The day starts with a memorial ride and back to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson by noon for some lunch. The riders enjoyed this year’s meal, barbeque and wings, as they listened to live music from the Taylor Vaden Band. By 1pm folks gathered in front of the Memorial Wall and the ceremony started with the American Legion Color Guard, and the playing of the national anthem. Then, owner Ray Perry read the Mayor’s Proclamation that in Winston-Salem, the 1st Sunday in May is Freedom Memorial Wall Sunday. With that, the names were read out starting with the first names on the wall and ending with the last year’s names that have been added. For some it’s a time of fond memories or reflection and for ones there to memorialize the latest additions it is a time of grieving and closure. As Mark Leonard stated, “We are

here not to remember the passing of our loved ones, but to celebrate the way they lived.” After everyone had a chance to walk by the memorial, lay flowers, or reflect, balloons are released in the air symbolizing the releasing of the human spirit from its earthly weight. The playing of taps signaled the end of the program. Each year as the number of names grows, more and more folks make the trip to honor their friends and family. Mark Leonard announced the many groups who had come to show their support and helped to make this event special each year: Winston Salem HOG Chapter, Winston Wings, as well as HOG and Wing Chapters from New Bern, Eden, Salisbury, Durham, Burlington, Wilkesboro, Morganton, American Legion Riders, and Dying Breed Motorcycle Club. As always, this year’s Freedom Memorial Wall Sunday was a special event and will continue to be so. Thunder In The Smokies Spring Rally

By: WildThing Always one of my favorite rallies, Thunder in the Smokies Spring Rally in Maggie Valley, surely didn’t disappoint! The first weekend in May had spectacular weather for all those who come up the mountain to ride the twisties, as well as those enjoying the music and camaraderie of the rally. The Friday afternoon band was The Smoke Rise Band and then early evening DB Bryant and the Pine Top Lightning took the stage. They are a popular group that had just finished as we arrived through the gates. There were a number of vendors set up around the perimeter of the festival grounds hawking their wares and some promoting services. The beer tubs were full and iced down and the party was on. The bikes were rolling through the gates after dinner at local hot spots, in time to catch the tail end of DB and the late night entertainment, The Corbitt Brothers Band. Saturday morning dawned perfect and one could hear the rumble of motorcycles starting up all over the valley. After a short visit with Matt and Dale Walksler at the Wheels Through Time Museum, an absolute favorite place of mine to visit, we headed over to the Thunder In The Smokies rally for the bike show. This bike show is free to enter and the winner is chosen by peoples’ choice earning a $500 cash prize. There are always plenty of spectacular machines in this show ranging from antiques to radical customs. This year the one that truly captivated everyone’s attention was a 2001 Harley-Davidson Road King with an inspirational paint job. The base paint looked like old parchment and was hand inscribed with excerpts from the Declaration of Independence

and the Bill of Rights (2nd Amendment), quotes from Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. Also, inspiring excerpts from George Washington’s Farewell Address and Inaugural Addresses of James Monroe and James Madison. The script looked very much like the script on the original documents. The owner, Philip Scott from Lexington, KY, had a double flag mount on the back with the Stars and Stripes and the Gadsden flags flying proudly. There was also a beautiful musket mounted behind the seat, pointing toward the rear and a small replica of the Liberty Bell on the seat. He credited Joanne Bortles of Crazy Horse Custom Painting in Waxhaw, NC for the beautiful custom paint. Philip stated that he used his motorcycle as a teaching tool and to open discussions about our Founding Fathers and the incredible documents they wrote that are responsible for launching the freedoms we enjoy today in the most exceptional country the world has ever seen. When awarded his $500 prize, Philip was quick to thank all veterans for their service and the support of the military families, and then graciously donated his winnings to the Viet Nam Veterans chapter that was on hand raising funds for local families in need. He told me later that he is willing to bring his motorcycle out to events and show it to inspire education on America’s beginnings. Right on the heels of that stirring moment, came the always fun and sometimes hilarious bike games. The local Aid To Injured Motorcyclists group sponsored the cash prize for the games. The traditional slow race and weenie bite came first. Then Chris, the promoter, had the bikers bouncing on big purple balls, just before he had the girls jumping off the back of motorcycles and plowing through a pile of hay looking for cans of beer. Not to drink, but to get them in the next round! The crowd gathers around the games and cheers on the all contestants and everyone has a great time. The evening lineup of entertainment starts at 4:30 again with The Smoke Rise Band, then The Springs Band, and on into the night with Lucas Hoge. The Maggie Valley Festival Grounds is a great venue for riding your motorcycle inside, park, visit the vendors, enjoy the music, and while away the evening with friends. The beautiful crescent moon added to the ambience of the evening. Make plans to ride up to Maggie Valley this fall for Thunder In The Smokies, September 12-14, 2014. See you there!

Officer Down Ride 2014

By: Judy Bortz Well, it is riding season again, and if the weekend of April 26 was an indicator, there will be lots of great rides this season. The Blue Knights sponsored the Officer Down Ride again this year, and it is ALWAYS one of the best. The ride started from Carolina Coast H-D, where coffee and doughnuts were available to all. This was a day ride that was well attended by many Knights. Patches from Blue Knights Fayetteville, Raleigh, Clinton, and Jacksonville were there, along with Nam Knights, and Red Knights who all showed strong support for this great cause. Officer Down Ride proceeds are kept locally while a portion raised goes to COPS (Concern of Police Survivors) a national organization that supplies counseling, groceries, and long term support for families of the brave men and women who lose their lives in the line of duty. There were raffles and a 50/50 to raise extra money for the cause. The ride was a beautiful 68-mile run through New Hanover and Brunswick County to Beach House H-D, where riders were met with a delicious BBQ lunch catered by Smithfield BBQ. Kudos to both Wilmington and Brunswick County Sherriff’s Departments who escorted the 125 registered riders along the route. It is great riding in a huge group when you don’t have to stop for any lights or traffic. They always do a wonderful job keeping the pack safe! This ride was a great start to the 2014 riding season, and it is looking to be an awesome one! Be safe out there and keep the rubber side down!

By: Rose and Lloyd A friend and brother was taken from us way too soon. Ronald Dean Daniels better known to all as RD passed away April 24, 2014 RD was a friend and brother to all. He was best known for his many years of cooking on bike night at Green Oak Tavern and giving his time for many charity events. He then went on to run the Moose Lodge in Thomasville with long time companion, Jamie Burkhart. This quickly became the place for many bikers to go and spend time with RD and Jamie. It is been best said by Jamie, “He was a wonderful man to me and my son, Landon. In spite of everything, he always showed us how much he loved us. He was a handshake and hug hello and goodbye to every man he called brother, and a kiss and hug for the women he called beautiful babies and dear. He is truly missed and leaves a void that will never be filled. He was the biggest little man you ever met”. Visitation was on Saturday, April 26th at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville and the parking lot was jammed of motorcycles and cars. Sunday, in honor of his service as a US Marine, the Patriot Guard Riders escorted RD to his final resting place in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. A celebration of life was held at the Thomasville Moose Lodge after the burial ceremony. RD you are truly missed by so many, and a book could be written in your honor of stories and times your friends want to cherish forever.

Seeing more and more people on bikes, I decided on having an accident. After all, I raced bikes for many years and could make it look any way I wanted it to. I wouldn’t have a problem letting someone else do me in. As we all know there are many idiots in cages that pay zero attention to us riders. After getting out on my bike, I met many riders who just cared about things - and me. People started asking for me to join in their rides and such. Hell, they became my new family. After a few months of this, I found myself wanting to live and ride more and more. I started helping others with whatever I could. I found a REASON to live! I found what I was missing; friendship, brotherhood, and just great people. With that said, I just wanted to thank the biking community for SAVING my life! Our Maggie Valley Wedding

By: Uwharrie Charlie How do you plan to marry the love of your life on a budget and her not even know about it? We want to keep it simple, and be sure it is something she will love! We’ve been together for 12-years and engaged for ten of those. I guess you could say we’ve been together long enough to know each other pretty well by now. We both have grown children and even a few grandchildren. I approached her dad a couple of years ago and we had “the talk”. He never shot at me once! Her mom is great and her two brothers are pretty cool. If there were any red flags up I would have seen them by now, right? And trust me when I say, “Honey, we’re getting married someday” got thrown back at me more times than I can count, but I meant it. Now it’s time to put-up or shut-up! The “keeping it quiet” part was easier than I thought. I told most people we come into contact with about my plan and they agreed to keep it under wraps.

I know most of them just figured I’d never do it for real and wouldn’t tell her in order to save her from getting her feelings hurt. A lot of people didn’t know because I couldn’t post it on Facebook and a lot of times she was with me and I couldn’t bring it up. So, if you were left out, I apologize. It was mere happenstance. The budget and simple part was made easy when I told Robin and Jimmy at Blue Mountain Inn in Maggie Valley, NC. That’s where we stay a lot during the Thunder In The Smokies Bike Rally. We love the place and Jimmy keeps making more accommodations for us bikers all the time. They are within walking distance to about everything you need, or need to do! Anyway, Robin told me about the wedding chapel her family has patronized a few times in the past so I was anxious to check it out. Miss Caroline’s Wedding Chapel was the choice for me, thanks Robin! After reviewing their website and pricing (remember the budget?) I found that this was a place I knew my bride would love and remember! Miss Caroline kept everything a secret as well. Only e-mail communication that I knew how to disguise, instructions, phone numbers, directions, and links-n-tips, this is great! Never a phone or bank transaction trail! I opted for the Rosebud Wedding Package. It is very quiet, except for the occasional sound of a bike, and private by the waterfall. There is also a gazebo and chapel if you want a different style wedding. They even have wedding cottages! Miss Caroline’s Wedding Chapel is located at 3248 Soco Road in Maggie Valley, NC. And just so nobody gets mad and says my bride never got to plan anything or invite anybody, I want you to know that I pay more attention than she thinks. Besides she was already suspicious and I spilled the beans the Monday before while telling Mark and Molly, owners of this here magazine. I had no idea she was right behind me, darn it! Oh well, she would have figured it out when we pulled up to the Haywood County Courthouse in Waynesville, NC to get the marriage license. It would seem that by law, both of us had to be there. Besides, she’s so pretty that she doesn’t need more than an hour to get to the chapel, right honey? I love you Mrs. Cassie Thurman Holcombe, forever and ever!

What is Your Bike Worth? Probably Less Than You Think. By: Matt Danielson We motorcyclists are a different breed. For most of us our motorcycles are more than a mode of transportation; they are literally an extension of us. Over time we modify and customize our bikes to make them unique. When a negligent driver damages or destroys our bike they have not just damaged or destroyed a vehicle, they have damaged or destroyed part of us. Our bikes can have value to us that are beyond market forces. That value can come from the rides we have taken on them, how long they have been in the family, or any number of things. However, to an insurance company, a defendant, or a court, your motorcycle is only worth what the market says it is worth. If your motorcycle is totaled the insurance company is only required to pay you the fair market value of your bike regardless of how much you owe on it or how much you think it is worth. Fair market value is the amount that the motorcycle would sell for on the open market. This should not to be confused with what you would ask for if you were to sell it. It should also not be confused with what you owe on it or what you have invested in it. These things are unimportant and often irrelevant in determining what your bike is worth. The insurance companies will often look to the NADA guide to gauge the value of your motorcycle. They will also look to see what similar motorcycles are selling for in your geographic area. I often get complaints that the insurance company is not taking into consideration aftermarket items such as additional chrome in computing the value of a client’s motorcycle. While extras and modifications can increase the value of a motorcycle, fair market value is not computed by taking what you paid for the bike and adding up all that you have invested in it. If you add $2,000 worth of chrome to your bike that does not necessarily mean the

bike is worth $2,000 more than before you added it. The question is how much will it cost a buyer to go out and purchase another bike like it. The answer to that question is usually less than the owner thinks. Try going on Craigslist or EBay and seeing how much bikes like yours are selling for. That is why I tell clients that if you want to put chrome on your motorcycle, do it because you like chrome, not because you want to add value to your bike. So what can you do to protect your bike? First and foremost, if you are financing your motorcycle consider gap insurance. Gap insurance pays the difference of what the motorcycle is worth, and what you owe. It keeps you from being “upside down” on your loan if your bike is totaled. By way of example, let’s say that you buy a bike for $15,000. Two years down the road you owe $13,500 but the fair market value is now $11,000. If you are in an accident and your bike is totaled, the insurance company is going to pay you $11,000. That takes care of the defendant’s obligations with regard to your bike. You will still owe $2,500 on a motorcycle that you do not own. Trust me; those are painful payments to make. However, if you bought gap insurance it would make up that $2,500 difference so that you would not owe further on the bike. You can also insure your motorcycle for a certain amount, often called scheduled or stated value. If you do that and your bike is totaled, the insurance company will pay that pre-set amount. Take that $15,000 bike that you bought in the previous scenario. You schedule the bike at $15,000. The same two years go by and it is worth $11,000. If you are in an accident and your bike is totaled the insurance company will pay you $15,000. If you do not want to pay for a scheduled or stated value, many policies will offer specific protection for accessories, which guarantees that you will receive value for your accessories. It does not protect you from the natural depreciation in value that all bikes experience over time. If you do purchase coverage for accessories, make sure to save the receipts for any accessories that you purchase.

The bottom line is that the vast majority of us are riding with what is called an “actual cash value” policy (ACV). If our motorcycle is totaled we will get the actual cash value of that motorcycle. If you, as many of us do, see your motorcycle as something that you have a personal investment in and you want to protect that investment, then you need to make sure that you purchase more than just an ACV policy. Otherwise, your investment is at mercy of the free market, and the free market will almost always determine that your motorcycle is worth less than what you think it is. Corbin’s Road To Hearing Benefit By: Everette “EZ” Short Almost every weekend all year long, someone, somewhere hosts a great charity event, poker run, or benefit. I go to as many as possible to photograph the bikes, babes, and all the fun, while I write about the causes, but on Saturday, May 3rd at The Corbin’s Road To Hearing Benefit, I got to meet the most amazing little boy that needed our help. Corbin is a miracle baby who was born deaf. This run was to raise money for cochlear implants that will allow him to hear for the first time ever. The most amazing part of Corbin is his contagious smile that will just plain steal your heart! Starting at the best little bar in Socastee, Patty’s Dew Drop Inn, the crowd came together in good spirits, and it was like a good ole’ family reunion including Corbin’s folks, Tessie and Richard Pariseau, his brother, Mason, his Grandmother, Lil, and Grand Pa pa, Snake, as well as Aunts, Uncles and an entire troop of working relatives manning the bars, cards, drinks and ticket tables. At noon the kickstands went up and there were about 30 or so bikes to start off the run. A couple of miles later, at The City Line Saloon, even more friends and family were waiting to join up. There were jokes, speeches, JC Childers on the microphone, and a few beers down the hatch, before it was time to find Hollywood’s Bar, just off the Hwy #17 Bi-Pass. I gotta give it to Scotty, who slung drinks so fast that I think we all saw stars. By the time I got there, the bikes were piled deep in the parking lot and the crowd was getting loud. There was some chugging of beers, back slapping, hugs, and a few bites, before we jumped back on the scoots, forming a

long line big bike parade down the road amidst honking drivers and sidelong stares on our way to Barnacle Bill’s Rum and Raw Bar. Keep in mind that we were all riding smack dab into the middle of downtown Myrtle Beach. After about an hour long “Safety Meeting”, we headed up the road to Dog House Donny’s Saloon for an incredible chicken bog feast, with insane amounts of fixin’s and goodies. There were prizes, raffles, give-a-ways, and all the winners donated their money back to Corbin. All in all, there were over 50 bikes and more than 100 guests that showed up to hit the goal of $5,000, which is enough for Corbin’s surgery which is to be performed on May 28th of this year, making it just in time for his 1st birthday party! A big GIANT Thank You to everyone who participated to make this one of the very best things that you can do on a wonderful, love filled day with extended family and your very best riding friends who you got to meet along the way! Luke Fest 2

By: Wendy Rogers Luke is a 4-year-old little boy who was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer known as Medulloblastoma. This is a very special little boy. Luke recently had surgery to remove a brain tumor. This little boy is very much loved and we all want him to know it from all of our hearts. There has been a website created to show him who is standing behind him during recovery. We are aiming for a million prayers for Luke. On May 10th there was a big event to help benefit Luke put on by Kim Richardson at the Dog House in Fayetteville, NC. It was really an event that was created for children. There was face painting, bouncy houses all over, and fishing scene where you could win a prize every time. They had games, a hula-hoop contest, and the children there were having such a great time. The best thing that happened all day was when Luke showed up around 7:30 and he got his spider man wheel chair that was built for him by Carolina Customs and Matt Fischer. Luke loves Spiderman! Young Star Productions was there and crowned Luke and Macy as Ambassadors made them visiting King and Queen. As they were on stage with Jessica McCain MTV real world and presently the Challenge, currently a Model and Reality spokesperson, Luke started singing, took the microphone and sang, as he does like his dad and grandpa Doc! And for the big kids, The Steele Angels hosted a poker run, which went to Legend’s Pub, Crow’s Nest, JB’s, Big Harry’s, and The Rock Shop. It was a little jazzed up with jokers wild

and drawing a 6th card and you were able to discard your choice to help create a nice hand. Winner of Best Hand won $100 and Worst Hand got $50, which both were donated back to Luke! Thanks for that! They had so much food there, and it was all delicious! They had tons of Bar-B-Q, cole slaw, baked beans, hush puppies, hot dogs, and hamburgers. Thanks to all of the sponsors and people who participated to provide such an awesome turnout to help Luke and his family. It is a great pleasure to know that people can come together and do such great things for people. By: Caroline No doubt, I always have a great time when I visit Baggerz Saloon, but their blow out party last April 19th was fantastic. The fun started at noon with early riders showing up to see what the vendors had to sell or get their bikes washed by a bikini clad team of cleaning engineers. Thank goodness we were treated to the warmest Saturday, to date! Vendors had a variety of items to sell from biker leathers and boots to jewelry. There were even some Victory Polaris bikes on display. Pretty soon, the grill was started and folks could buy wings and chips with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House. In addition to the proceeds from the food, a silent auction for some great racing items added to the donated funds. To add to the fun there were plenty of giveaways, shirts, hats, koozies, and sunglasses - there was something for everyone. You practically had to be hiding under a rock not to walk away with a prize. There was also plenty of music with a DJ that had

1st Annual Crystal Coast Bike Rally By: Joel Robertson A good time was had by all at Cedar Point Tavern’s 1st Annual Crystal Coast Bike Rally May 9-11. There was a wide assortment of live music to include CSA Band, Adam’s Ocean, Jason Crawford Pearce, The Jim Kohler Band, Coastal Southern Attitude, Johnny Reb & The Cast Iron Cowboys, The Occasionals Band, and Nantucket. This 3-day event had vendors of all types. There was also some amazing body paint work done on many people provided by Tiffany Gill of Kaleidoscope Bodyart (KaleidoscopeBodyArt.com) out of Wendell, NC. The ride on Sunday started with breakfast at the Smoke House BBQ Cedar Point. The ride was $5 per person with all proceeds going to K9’s For Warriors (www.K9sForWarriors.org). At 10:30am they rode to the Tackle Box in Atlantic Beach and back to the Cedar Point Tavern. Food was served at Cedar Point Tavern for a $5 dollar donation per plate. They also had $2 beer all day! They sold tickets for $1 each for the Rocking Motorcycle donated by Ryerson Unlimited out of Swansboro with all proceeds going to K9’s For Warriors. The winner of the rocking motorcycle was Norm. This is one event that you sure don’t want to miss next year,

The 24th Annual Dick Martin Bunny Run By: Everette “EZ” Short Pursuant to tradition, on Easter Sunday (4/20 to those of you who missed church that day) all hands were called to the deck for the 24th Annual Dick Martin Bunny Run. With a little rain and a lot less shine, this year’s spectacular event went off without a hitch (note: NEVER USE THE WORD “EVENT” OR YOU WILL PISS OFF THE RAIN GODS, EVEN ON EASTER SUNDAY). Starting from Danny Lee’s, the crew finished their free breakfast, posed for a group picture, and saddled up to invade the beach roads, conquering the cager hordes all the way to The Boathouse in Fantasy Harbor. Soon enough, the crowd began growing restless with ominous dark rain clouds creeping in, so it was a quick stop before jetting down Highway #501 to Barnacle Bill’s Rum & Raw Bar in the middle of Myrtle Beach. It wasn’t long before the local po-pos gathered to give us the high sign to exit the town. Actually they were very pleasant and stopped traffic for us at Ocean Boulevard. Once on the way, this parade of 200 plus bikes were quick to find The City Line Saloon, where the lusciously outfitted Tony and Karin tried to keep up with an overflowing mass of thirsty revelers, despite JC Childers getting in the way and all. Within a few minutes, it was time for another group shot

and down road we went with a lot of noise on prestigious King’s Highway for a flourishing finish at Suck Bang Blow where burnout madness, some severe adult humor, cold drinks, and a lot of awesome great food was being served up for FREE by The Motley (who always complains that his picture isn’t featured on the cover of this magazine). All in all, there were no incidents, no accidents, no attitudes, and a lot of Easter good time fun. It is hard to believe it has been going on for 24 years of great chaos and good time fun with no point, no agenda, and the most spectacular show of utter madness reigning supreme from a big mustached bunny named Dick! If you missed this run, then should at least show up at The Beach Rally in May! Maybe you can find a ride with almost this much fun. We’ll see you there and a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who participated, despite the little bit of rain, cold, wind, and road traffic. Ray Price Racing Captures 2nd Win In A Row Team wins at NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series O’Reilly Spring Nationals. The Ray Price HarleyDavidson drag race team captured its second win in a row as part of the NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series at Royal Purple Raceway, Houston, TX as part of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series on April 25-27, 2014. This is the first of two races the Top Fuel Harley’s will compete on the NHRA national event stage. The Akea/Ray Price sponsored drag bike spun the big rear tire during the first round of qualifying on Friday afternoon. The team then returned to the pits to ready the drag bike for Saturday’s qualifying sessions. The team determined that they over powered the track and needed to take power away. During the second round of qualifying on Saturday the team backed the power down enough to get into the field with a 6.676 ET at 221.02 MPH. This moved them from the number nine qualifying spot to number seven. In the third round of qualifying the team ran a 6.430 ET at 226.66 MPH, which at the end of qualifying placed them at number 5 in the 8 bike field. Sunday’s eliminations saw Grimes versus Mike Pelrine in the first round with Grimes crossing the finish line first at 6.295 ET at 228.27 MPH to advance into the second round. Grimes led the race all the way, steadily opening the gap. In round two of eliminations Grimes posted a 6.259 ET at

228.27 mph win over Randal Andras to move into the finals. Facing Jay Turner in the finals, Turner had a starting line advantage, but Grimes made up the distance before reaching the 330-foot timer, pulling away for the win with a 6.247 ET at 232.91 MPH. The win gave the Akea/ Ray Price Racing Team its second win in a row. “I am very proud of our efforts this weekend. The win puts us in first place in the Harley-Davidson Champion points standings”, said Ray Price. The Akea/Ray Price Racing heads to Bristol Dragway in Bristol TN on June 13-15. Some Of The Folks Dressed Up For The 1970’S Party Story and photo by Alan Dockery One of my favorite places to spend a weekend; Riders’ Roost, Ferguson, NC; kicked off camping and party season the last weekend of April with a 1970’s Party. That’s the same weekend as the Merle Fest and The Roost is a good place to camp for folks attending the music festival. I suggest riding in Friday afternoon so you have more time to catch up with friends you’ve missed seeing over the Winter. Pam did a great job decorating for the 70’s theme. Peace signs and tie dye everywhere. Dave kept the music going all weekend with our 70’s favorites and some songs we ain’t heard in years. Saturday night lots of folks dressed up 70’s style. None of my old embroidered overalls from those days fit anymore. I spent the 1970’s as a Beach Bum and the loose shorts and shirts still fit. Big Tim Honeycutt won the Costume Contest. Lisha Orfield still has the disco moves and won the Dance Contest. Everette Hiatt stepped to the mike for the Karaoke Contest win. Honorable Mention for being a true hippie in every sense went to Sandy Queen. We had a special guest that weekend. Steven Jones, son of Roosters Steve and Allison, joined us for a fun weekend before he heads off to Army Basic Training. Hooah! Riders’ Roost is a great place to hang out with friends. Tim and Hippie Todd were there keeping us folks around the bunkhouse well fed all weekend. Love the fried banana splits Lynn and Lisha whipped up. Late at night I like to break out the Smore fixins as we sit around the fire. As Don Steele used to say, “Ride through the gate a stranger. Walk through the door a friend. Park your bike, step on the grass and you will find yourself at home.” Now that Roost camping season is in gear, I’m looking forward to seeing lots of y’all at the Roost weekends during the summer. Wooooo!

The 5th Annual Chuck Shearer Memorial Ride

By: Everette “EZ” Short The day was bright and the air was perfect for an epic ride through the Strand on Saturday April 26th, when 67 registered riders and guests showed up at Longbeards Bar & Grill, in Carolina Forest, to start the 5th Annual Chuck Shearer Leukemia Foundation Bike Ride. It was a great seeing so many friends come together after the long winter we have all endured. Before we could burn any more daylight, it was off in a hurry to Murrells Inlet for some sun and a quick sit in the rocking chairs, before we were back on the bikes to The Boathouse in Fantasy Harbor. Misty, the owner, and all her staff, were right on the money, slinging the drinks and grub from the moment we got there. Next, we rode north through heavy cager traffic and some ridiculous construction zones in North Myrtle Beach that somehow drive the tourists mad with lane change envy, to roll into the new Waterway Bar & Grill (previously the Dog House North). The place is nice and they have a big front deck so we could all keep a watch on our bikes (VERY important during Bike Week) and the new owner even came out from behind the bar to hug me saying, “I GOT IT...” Not sure what that meant, but good luck with that. After a drink and a story or two and with a big beautiful sun shining brightly on our backs, we rode north to find Harley’s Roadhouse in Little River. When we got there, a big tent extravaganza was already underway that included some great stage bands, ice cold beers, several custom bike builders complete with gorgelicious models, tee shirt and jewelry

vendors, carnival style food booths, exotic adult beverages, and a lot of great friends that I haven’t seen since well before the snow fell. Congratulations to the new owners for bringing it all together for a 22-acre rowdy redneck party. All too soon, it was time to saddle up and ride back to Longbeards Bar & Grill where the festivities were neatly wrapped up with some great BBQ and all the fixin’s, while the band, Angel’s Share, fired up the tunes, putting the finishing touches on a fantastic day. When the dust finally cleared and everyone rode off into the night, the event had raised over $2500 for the Leukemia Foundation. Let me tell you that we had more fun than a barrel full of monkeys riding on a cavalcade of motorcycles. I have to say what a great job that all the family and support personnel pulled off and if you see anyone you know in the pictures at FullThrottleMagazine.com, be sure to tell them where you saw them.

Families Helped By VFW 8988

By: Rick G May 3rd was a day that Archdale VFW 8988 had put aside to ride, have a good time, and raise awareness and money to help families of deployed soldiers. This is their second year helping the soldiers of this country to move forward is a difficult economy. To the average person, helping and admiring should be a given, but most don’t think of the burden that a deployed soldier goes through, having to worry about the welfare of his family stateside while bullets aimed at his head go whizzing by him. Caring for family is difficult most any regular day, but when your job is half way around the world, it can become a mental grindstone. These soldiers need our help. Maybe we cannot help them directly, but we can take off some of the pressure. This is the reason VFW 8988 stepped up to help. Soldier families need basic things – food, shelter, clothing, bills paid, and Christmas presents. By serving our country in foreign conflict, soldiers sometimes have to leave their families vulnerable. So, we left the Post at 11:30 am. Approximately 28 bikes headed to the AmVets of Asheboro, followed by a quick scoot to Darrell’s Bar in Lexington and up to the Thomasville Moose Lodge (in memory of RD). Next stop was the Pitts in High Point and then back to the Post. Good ride, good weather, good day! Oh, and good BBQ was available for everybody. Did I say good BBQ? I meant great Q. Afterward, an auction was held. It was a hoot! I laughed so hard I nearly peed my pants. And all items sold for good money. Branded provided the musical entertainment. Wow, these

boys are exceptional. They played good country (some with their own spin), rock, and power ballads. Everyone I spoke to was pleased that this band came here this year. They are considering having them come back. The entire day was an adventure and I was proud to know I helped a soldier’s family to survive a while longer. If you missed it, sorry. 6th Annual Miles For Mutts Benefit

By: Terri Wall The 6th Annual Miles For Mutts was held on Saturday, April 12th to benefit the Humane Society of Alamance County. The weather was perfect. This year’s event was the biggest ever with 212 bikes and over 320 registered riders leaving out of Lucky’s Saloon and we picked up several more along the way. Once again, Tinker Lloyd of A. L. Grading, Hauling, and Landscaping led another great ride through Alamance and Guilford County to the first stop at East Coast Custom Cycles where they enjoyed hot dogs, cold beverages, and a few giveaways. Next stop was Twisted T’s where they were ready to serve up some more cold beverages. Then it was off to Freebird’s in southern Alamance County for another refreshment stop before Tinker and crew brought everyone back safe to Lucky’s Saloon. Texas Road House of Burlington and their staff fed over 400 people after the ride. The staff and bartenders of Lucky’s worked their hind ends off to take care of everyone. Thanks to Sok Monkee for performing some great music to party the evening away. We appreciate all that Kenny Money, our emcee, does getting up on stage and getting the crowd motivated and donating their time and money to the Miles For Mutts Event. Remember, it was for the puppies! Rick James of Mebane won the Grand Prize John Deere Z655 Zero Degree Mower. He was so excited when he got the call that he had won that he went first thing Monday morning to pick up the mower so he could mow before it rained on Tuesday. Kim Rimmer was the 1st Place Prize Winner. She won a storm door and installation from the Aluminum Company of North Carolina valued at over $700. Jim Spencer won the 2nd Place Prize of a $500 Tooth Whitening donated by Dr. Bilai Saib of Chapel Hill Advanced Dentistry. The 3rd Place Winner of the child’s John Deere battery operated Gator was Ross Wagner of Haw River. Ross donated it back to the event and it was auctioned off and an additional $405 for the cause. Billy Parrish donated a bicycle that was raffled off and brought $350. Aydin Hollaway won it. He generously donated it to Landon Jacobs who suffers from a chromosomal deficiency. Caitlin Daly, executive Director of the Humane Society really gets involved with the planning and has become an intricate part of the Miles For Mutts. This event has become the largest fundraiser for Humane Society of Alamance County and they are so grateful to everyone that came out and supported this event. This year, a grand total of $22,000 was donated to the Humane Society of Alamance County in honor of Amanda Peeler. This brings us to $81,887 donated to the HSAC over the last 6 years. The Humane Society is a non-profit group that relies solely on donations to continue to provide low cost spay/neuter, foster program and education of the benefits of spay/neuter your pets. Murphy, a furniture dealer from Dublin, decided to expand the line of furniture in his store, so he decided to go to Paris to see what he could find. After arriving in Paris, he visited with some manufacturers and selected a line that he thought would sell well back home. To celebrate the new acquisition, he decided to visit a small bistro and have a glass of wine. 7th Annual Wounded Warrior Benefit Run

By: Old Spook On May 3rd at the Amvet Post 70 Beaufort Chapter, the Forgotten Sons held their 7th Annual Wounded Warrior Run. I talked with “Bacon” the founder of Forgotten Sons Motorcycle Club and President of the Beaufort Chapter. The funds were raised to help wounded veterans from all branches of service. The run started at Amvets, then to Carolina Honky Tonk in Ocatee, Katy O’Donnell’s in Bluffton, Ned’s Pub and Grub in Richland, Harold’s Country Club in Yemassee, Rosie O’Grady’s in Beaufort, and then return to Amvets. The money is being donated to Independence Fund and Healing Heroes of the Low Country. Healing Heroes is located in Beaufort and helps all veterans and first responders. They focus on problems concerning PTSD. Nearly 200 bikes participated in the event that turned out to be one of the most successful runs to date.

Change Greetings everyone. I had the opportunity to ride to Myrtle Beach last weekend. It was the first time I rode my bike and went alone in nearly 30 years. The ride was awesome, cool morning with almost no traffic, well until Conway, then, well, you know. Then to my amazement I found a pile of rubble where SBB used to stand, I was told that everything had been moved to the original SBB location. So I rode over to meet up with a couple of brothers who had set up inside. Many changes had been made in the off-season. After leaving there, I then rode north and found a lot of changes to the entire area. Kinda like the HLF Ministry. Many may not know that we are moving the headquarters to the Harvest Camp. This has been in the planning stages for many years now and we are excited to be doing so. But all the packing and loading brings a feeling of uncertainty. Not fear or discouragement, but just something different. A new address, phone system, Internet, etc. Just not the same. After all we have been in the big blue building for 14 years now, and to some, change is very hard to deal with. My children and now my grandchildren know no other church. We always end our toy run at the ministry, hand out the goodies at Christmas time, and serve meals all year long. All this will not change, we may do things a little different for a while, but the ministry of His Laboring Few will continue. But brothers and sisters let me assure you, like I needed as-

suring; God has not changed during all this. The word of God tells us He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He will not leave us or forsake us. So how’s your life? Are changes driving you crazy, making you question your decisions that affect you and others around you? When our pastor had his accident, many fell by the wayside because of change. But please be assured we have an awesome pastor filling in until the day a complete healing takes place. By: Judy Bortz April 26th had a few rides, and this one was well done. This ride was a Guardian Angels event coordinated by Denise Albea and Sharon Ferris Williams. This organization has organized hundreds of rides and fundraisers and they know how to do it. The ride started and ended at Flounders Saloon in Castle Hayne, NC; a great bar with wonderful outside space to spread out on. Twenty-six bikes registered and the ride was about 40 miles total around Wilmington and Castle Hayne. It is a good day when you can help a local family in need. They were overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who attended. The event featured a great live auction and a 50/50 raffle. Live music was donated by Stereotype who shook the walls and had everyone up and moving. It was a beautiful way to celebrate the life of Pam Mintz a woman who touched so many lives. She died suddenly of a heart attack at 40 years old. The only symptom she had was acid reflux. I didn’t even know that was a symptom. Two children and her only granddaughter, a 3 year old who was the apple of her eye, survive Pam. The money raised went to help the family with burial costs and a headstone for her grave. Symptoms of a heart attack can vary greatly, so let us learn from this to take any unusual symptoms seriously and get checked out. Smoke In The Valley

Independence Day Celebration Story and photo by Alan Dockery The first weekend of May folks piled into Antioch Speedway in Morganton, NC for Smoke In The Valley. This was a weekend with a whole bunch of activities going on at the half-mile dirt track involving two and four-wheel vehicles. There was racing, BBQ, vendors, music, and raising the dust and slinging mud. Friday night some flat track motorcycles took to the track. Antioch is a fast half-mile for cars, but was tricky for the twowheelers. Standing by the first turn with some local motorcycle fans made it clear the flat trackers are some brave guys. Saturday, the campground was filling in and more motorcyclists were getting ready for the dirt bike race. Antioch Speedway has miles of off-road riding trails, which were open for folks to enjoy all weekend. At noon they closed off a short loop trail to run a one-hour race. Shane Hall, from Morganton, smoked the field in the dirt bike race. Among the motorcycles at Antioch, the staff picked a couple as the best looking. John Luther from Summerfield, NC took first place. Ralph Hill of Lake Lure, NC was the feature winner. When folks werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t jamming to the bands, riding the trails, kicking up the dust, getting stuck in the mud, cruising laps, or just relaxing at camp, they gathered at the mud bog to watch other guys slog through the pit. Saturday night the action was on the racetrack as the cars got ready for a 100-lap enduro race. If you like good old-fashioned North Carolina redneck fun and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind getting dirty check out Antioch Speedway sometime.

Down Home H-D Open House

By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, April 26th, Down Home Harley-Davidson held their annual open house and, no doubt, it was the hit of the weekend in the Burlington area. All departments in the store were jumping. MotorClothes® had all their new accessories for the spring riding season and the MotorParts® counter guys stayed busy answering questions and helping customers with new accessories. Motorcycle sales are up and with the new model Harley’s available, sales can only get better. Outside, Dixie Revival was entertaining folks and the Grillin ‘And Chillin’ folks of the Burlington HOG Chapter were serving some great food up. As usual, it was also great to see Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson, Britteny Pierce, there helping with the day’s events and entertaining the folks in attendance. The main attraction of the day was the fact that the 4th Annual Kid’s Path of Hospice of Alamance/Caswell Counties Bike Show was taking place at the dealership. Eighty-seven motorcycles registered in more than 20 categories. Door prize tickets were sold along with 50/50 tickets. The door prizes were too many to mention and great items were donated for the benefit. In all, over $15,000 and counting was raised for Kids Path of Hospice. Again this year, all the trophies were custom made for the show. Words can’t describe the work that went to making them. Check out the group photo of the bike show winners and top finishers. Emma Roberts Benefit Ride

By: Jeanie Hood-Carter It is a joy when bikers come together from different areas and backgrounds to help one of their own. March 22nd was one of those fun days when many came together to help local NC biker lady named Emma Roberts. Emma had surgery on her rotator cuff a few months ago. Some of her friends applied with Bikers For Bikers Foundation (BikersForBikersFoundation.com) for Emma to get help since she would be out of work for months. To top it all off, in the middle of planning and getting ready for Emma’s event, she lost her only surviving sibling, Earl Joyner from Ayden, NC on February 21, who also rode. To say the least, Emma had a tough start for 2014. For those who don’t know Emma, she is an independent lady who has ridden for years and supported many events. Like many bikers, Emma is too proud to ask for help herself and has many friends who truly admire and respect her old school qualities. I’ve never seen this lady when she wasn’t smiling. She’s like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day and makes you feel like a friend from day one. A few vendors and BFBF set up at the Doghouse Bar & Grill in Fayetteville, NC around 9:30am on March 22nd for the benefit. Registration began at 11am and the first kickstands went up at noon. The weather was perfect for a spring ride and folks were packing the parking lot! There were 44 bikes and 50 people who rode in Emma Roberts Benefit Ride in 3 groups. While the riders were out on the run more bikes and riders were coming in to check out the vendors and event. All in all there were about 100 bikes come and go through the event. One thing BFBF has added to their events is a professional group of photographers so people can get high quality natural pictures at an event whether with their bikes or meandering through the crowds. It was a great day for a ride and all the trimmings. Riders started coming back to The Doghouse around 3:304:00pm. The Doghouse provided the buffet style meal and everyone seemed to enjoy the variety of food. There was a raffle and auction to follow as well as a leather jacket for high number won by Tim Huggin and one for lowest number that went to Brian Lemley. Taz won the 50/50, which he kept for himself. The high auction bidder of the day was Jim from Lost Memories for a classic neon Harley-Davidson clock donated by Dean Barefoot, courtesy of Cape Fear Harley-Davidson. Heather Smith’s Passion Parties donated some surprise raffle bags to spice things up a little. Ewww LaLa, I believe Cari got some very sexy undies! Emma rode the rocking horse motorcycle that belongs to the youngest BFBF member, which means “She’s Back In The Saddle Again!” Yes, she was having a good time like everyone else. It was a great day with the exception of one thing. A jewelry vendor donated a biker style ring to be auctioned at the benefit. For the first time in 6 years of holding all kinds of events, an item was stolen off the table where the prizes, raffle items and auction items were displayed. We have never had this happen

before and quite frankly Mickey was beyond disappointment when it was discovered the ring was missing. NO ONE LIKES A THIEF. People work hard for the money they put into supporting these events as well as the BFBF volunteers and vendors who get out and get donations and/or work the events. It is a sad day when a fellow biker has no respect for a brother or sister in need and steals from a charitable event. Occasionally, everyone gets a bad apple in the bunch. However, we didn’t let one bad apple spoil the whole basket or the day. It was a fun event with lots of smiles. Many things have changed with the times but a biker benefit is still one of the best events around! Emma was very grateful to all for the support she got at the event. WoW! What a hectic day. It was also the first and last event BFBF has done without a microphone. Until now, I think the microphone in a crowd was taken for granted. By the end of the event, Bullet had lost his voice! Yes, lessons are still being learned after all these years and events. Regardless of lessons, the riders had a blast, and the auction and raffle went well for Emma. I believe there were tears of gratitude when Mickey handed her the check at the end of the event. For me, it’s always a blessing to know a variety of people will come to an event, and support from their hearts to help a brother or sister in need. That’s what being a biker is about! Much appreciation goes to The Doghouse for helping host the event, Jim Grubbs and Lost Memories for assisting with the event, Chi Force Photography for professional pictures, Beverly Rose Designs-Jewelry, Cape Fear Harley-Davidson, Heather Smith-Passion Parties, Noel Forres, Bullet and Shawna Underwood, and Deb Fowler for assisting, Terri Morgan - all those leathers, Dean Barefoot, Hot Hog Leathers, and the ride stops which included Mugshots, Lost Memories, Charlie Mike’s Pub, Jerry and Dawn Potts, and all those who supported, donated, and made this a successful event for Emma. Operation Military Child

By: Old Spook With April being the Month Of The Military Child, Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club, Chapter 37 held its first “Operation Military Child” event in support of military children and their families. This event was held at Low Country Harley-Davidson who helped to organize the event, which turned out to be quite a show. The Fort Dorchester High School Color Guard opened the event with the presenting the Colors while 7-year-old Charlotte, a Green Knights daughter/military child, sang the National Anthem. The event was kicked off by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office providing an escorted ride up 526 to Highway 17 in Mt. Pleasant, across the Ravenel Bridge, onto I-26 and back to 526 returning to Low Country Harley-Davidson. Then it was all for kids. The youngsters brought their bicycles, decorated them, and rode in their own parade. A contest was held for the best bikes, but all received something! BMX stunt performance riders from Area 51, a jump castle, monster game theatre, and a dunk tank entertained the kids. The Charleston Country Sheriff’s Department put on a show with their synchronized motorcycle skills that always amazes the crowd. This first event went off like clockwork and the turnout was amazing with 130+ motorcycles supporting. Over $3,000

was raised for state and local military youth programs. Seven bicycles, 2 scooters, and 25 Daddy Doll Vouchers were given away to the kids. I’ve seen my share of events and if I had not known this was an inaugural event, I would have thought they had done this many times before.

Aidan’s Ride NC

By: Kathy Johnson Selfless is the word that comes to mind to describe Elisa and Bobby Seeger. Their son, Aidan Jack Seeger, was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) in 2011. ALD is an x linked genetic disease affecting 1 in 17,000 people. It progressively damages the myelin sheath of nerves. It leads to many other disabilities such as loss of hearing, vision, and communication. Aidan, at such a young age, lost his fight with ALD in 2012. If he had been tested and diagnosed at birth, it might have been prevented. One thing I know, Aidan is helping so many other children. You see, with out newborn screening ALD can go undetected as it did in Aidan’s life. ALD usually manifests in boys between the ages of 4 - 10 and goes undetected until the symptoms arise. If screening is done at birth disabilities with ALD can be improved or even cured. Elisa and Bobbie Seeger have helped so many families since Aidan’s passing. They gave these families more time with their child or basically saved someone’s child’s life. How they have done that and made it possible is they were able to get New York State to require newborn screening for ALD. So on May 10th in Durham NC, Aidan had a posse riding in his memory and generating donations to help the fight against ALD. That morning everyone met at Rommel H-D getting ready for the ride. Riders came in from as far as Ohio, New York, and Georgia to support the cause. If you were unfamiliar with Bobby and Elisa by name they also have worked hard at keeping the INDIAN LARRY LEGACY fresh and strong. So, yes, when you pulled up the Indian Larry van was in the parking lot with Larry’s as large as life photo on the side. Then you didn’t have to scan the parking lot long before seeing one of the IL bikes, or as I say, works of art, in the parking lot. Beside that was a West Coast Chopper that was a beaut, too! It was for the Aidan’s ride raffle in New York taking place in

June. The money, of course was for ALD. I do want to give a shout out to Rommel H-D for being so gracious providing drinks and food. They even had coffee in a box! I have seen wine in a box, but never coffee. I must be shopping in a different store then they are. But Rommel H-D didn’t just donate. You could tell they weren’t just donating they wanted to and were glad to do it. They were smiling so hard every time they brought items to the table. It was time to roll so Bobby pulled to the front and Aidan’s Ride NC hit the road. You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to ride. I think an Angel named Aidan made sure of that. The food, entertainment, raffles, and cool down was at Crazy Shots in Hillsborough. I do want to tell you some of the raffle prizes that went out. They were great! Raffle prizes included a signed Hurricanes hockey puck that Rabbit won, a full night limo ride won by Lori and Ronnie. Lauren took home a $200 gift card to Genuine Motorworks and Amanda Hodge won a $200 gift card to Indian Larry Motorcycles. Then Amanda won the signed Indian Larry photo by photographer Tom Zimberoff, which was donated by Mondo Porras of Denver’s Choppers. It doesn’t get better than that. That is were every one settled in for the day and relaxed, talked, and for some learned about ALD. Bobby and Elisa didn’t have any worries about everything going smooth as their good friend, Jason Jones, had everything organized in NC for them. When I asked Jason what he wanted people to know his reply was, “I met Bobby near the end of the 8 months that Aidan was being treated at Duke. Since then he has been in contact ever since. Bobbie & Elisa have done so much to help others he wanted to do something for them here in Durham. Elisa’s & Bobbies hard work has not only saved the lives of several children so far but has affected the future of their entire families”. So, people after reading that don’t hesitate.
