Yup, it’s the Concerned Bikers Association Fall Bike Show & Swap Meet sponsored by Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury. Our show has been going on for 48 years thanks to all of fine folks supporting us. This ain’t a t-shirt show, folks. It is a real swap meet and bike show put on by real bikers. Our members work hard to put on a good show for your enjoyment. If you’ve been to one of our shows, you know there will be a building full of beautiful show bikes to look at. There will be 2 buildings and a barn and a giant outdoor midway full of vendors. Come early if you want to find those antique parts you’ve been looking for. You can find something that you want or need…from a new set of tins, a new front end, tires, a rolling chassis, engines, transmissions, or a new complete motorcycle. You can find biker jewelry, leathers, boots, t-shirts. You name it, it will be there including food and beverages. There will be two bands playing all day for your listening pleasure. We will have a “wet-t-shirt contest” both days with a cash prize of $500. We will be having a ladies “best bun contest” with a cash prize of $500, also. The bike show will have trophies and a $1,000 People’s Choice Award. We want to remind you that when you attend our show, or any CBA event across the State, all the money stays in North Carolina and is used to promote our sport and lifestyle and to be your eyes and voice in Raleigh and Washington, DC. We try to keep you informed of legislation that affects us as Bikers. We talk to legislators and let them know how we feel. We fight against some legislation and help introduce some favorable legislation, also. You need CBA and CBA needs you. We need a united motorcycle organization to have more impact with the Legislators. Remember, “United we stand…. Divided we fall”. Join our/your organization now! We will be having a membership drive at our show. You can join Charlotte CBA for the low, low cost of $10.00 for a yearly membership and help us represent you in Raleigh. (We can keep the cost down because of our Swap Meets.) One of the things that CBA uses the money for, and that I am most proud of, is our MSAP…Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program. This is where our CBA MSAP trained instructors, under the leadership of Keith Long, go into local high school driver’s education classes and make students aware of motorcyclists that they will be sharing the road with. Our Charlotte MSAP Instructors have taught over 52,000 students. Hopefully this will save some lives. Concerned Bikers Association=Freedom Fighters=CBA/ ABATE of NC Recent Accomplishments: No More Motorcycle Only Checkpoints: House Bill 381 (SL2011-216) prevents law enforcement agencies from establishing patterns for vehicle stops at checking stations based on a particular type of vehicle. Right-of-Way Protection for Motorcyclists: House Bill 113

(SL2011-361) significantly increases the penalties for crowding a motorcyclist out of his/her lane or causing injury to the motorcyclist. Expansion of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Training [MSAP]: House Bill 200 (SL2011-145) included a provision that requires driver’s education instruction to include at least one hour of motorcycle safety awareness. More Protection from Drunk Drivers: Senate Bill 16 (SL2011-16) expanded authority of law enforcement officers to acquire blood samples from any person criminally charged in any case involving death by vehicle that is alcohol related. More Protection from Drunk Drivers: House Bill 49 (SL2011-191) mandates active jail time for DWI offenders with three or more grossly aggravating factors and provides for enhanced monetary penalties and permanent revocation of the convicted person’s driver’s license. Motorcycle Red Light Law: If the light ‘trip’ has not recognized your motorcycle within 3 minutes, you may safely proceed through the intersection. This year, we are also working on bills to: Fine people for blowing grass clippings into the road. A bill to make it legal for bikers to wear a face mask. An anti-profiling bill. An equal access bill for all motorcycles. A freedom of choice bill for helmet use. And most important, a distracted driving bill. We also get Proclamations from the State and many cities across our State declaring “May Is Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Month in NC”. Charlotte CBA has fun and goes on runs and to events as a group. Brotherhood of Bikers Polar Bear Ride By Wally Wersching picked up a flyer about the Brotherhood of Bikers Polar Bear Ride when I stopped in at the Spartanburg Harley dealership. It was on the rack with all the magazines. I was looking for something to do on the weekend because it was a beautiful sunny and warm week. It was in the 70’s which was great for early February. It was being held at Red’s Watering Hole I have never been in Gaffney on Saturday February 9th to benthere before, but it was easy to find efit Chris “Sandman” Sanders. I’ve been to with the map. Gaffney many times, but I had to look up where Red’s Watering Hole was. I had never been there before, but it was easy to find with the map. Saturday came and the cold front came in late Friday. No more temps in the 70’s. The high temp on Saturday was supposed to be in the mid 40’s. That would happen late in the afternoon. When I left home, it was still in the 30’s. Luckily, I dressed for it: long underwear, chaps, multiple shirts, and a warm leather jacket. When I was riding south on Rte. 18, I

was comfortable. I arrived at the Watering Hole at about 11:00AM. There were already a few bikes parked on the street. I brought a stack of Full Throttle Magazines to share and had to walk around to the back of the bar to get in. I placed the magazines on the pool table. They were taking registrations on the table next to the pool table, so people were taking magazines before they registered. It was only $10.00 per rider with the chance

to win a cash prize later when they drew the winning ticket. There were also door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, and live music when the ride was over. The food was supplied by Vern Morgan – his world famous hash for $6.00/plate. I learned that “Sandman” was having medical issues, and the money would go to help with his situation. I didn’t register but dropped a donation in the box. Most of the people I had not met before. They were all very friendly, so I struck up conversations with many of them. Then I noticed that a young couple was there that I met at the Ace Bakery Hogtoberfest last October. I recognized their two Indians parked outside. I shared a few magazines with them as we talked about upcom-

ing events. All the while, there was the delicious smell of the hash cooking in a large pot. Vern was there stirring it as he dropped in more ingredients. It sure smelled good! I learned later that Gaffney is known for its great hash. There are many restaurants that offer hash on the menu. They are all good, but I guess that Vern’s is one of the best. I asked where the ride would be going, and was told that it would ride to various other biker friendly bars in South Carolina before returning for the hash. It was good that the ride stayed in South Carolina because most of the bikers did not bring their helmets. South Carolina does not have a mandatory helmet law – North Carolina does. It was a very cordial atmosphere. I could have stayed there talking to people all afternoon. I could see why the place was a landmark watering hole. It would be easy to spend time sipping a cold beverage sharing stories with friends. But at just about noon, everybody went to their bikes, and warmed them up for the ride. When the ride was to start, a couple people went into the intersection to block traffic so the group could leave together. Within a few minutes, all was quiet again. I rode home and took Cindy out for a delicious lunch. I’d like to do this again every Saturday – meet new friends. Hopefully it will be a little warmer though.

2019 Burlington L.O.H. Chili Cook-Off

By Scott Wicker s in years past, an enthusiastic crowd looking to get some great chili at Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington came out on Saturday, February 9th to show support for the Burlington Ladies of Harley Annual Chili Cook Off. As in previous years, each of the participants in the cook off served an ample portion of chili to those in attendance that made a donation to benefit the Burlington Ladies of Harley. Also, baked goods were available making this very popular event successful as usual. Several varieties of chili were served, giving a variety of different flavors to this year’s event. All 8 contestants served up some great chili making it difficult to pick whose was the best. When all was said and done and the votes were counted, Deb and Lance Greene were declared the winners and were named the 2019 Burlington L.O.H. Chili Bean “Queen and King”. Deb and Lance Greene Won the Popular Vote Division and Bobby Harmon won the Judged Division. Bobby, Deb, and Lance will represent the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter and the Burlington L.O.H. at the Annual Chili Cook-Off to be held in Durham,

By: Shannon Rights ith the warmer temperatures and clear skies, riders are getting out on the roads again this year. We want to make sure that every motorcyclist is prepared for the worst. While we hope we’ll never be involved in an accident, many of us will be. Below is a list of tips we’ve put together to make sure if you are involved in an accident, you’re prepared. • WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR ME TO KNOW ABOUT MOTOR VEHICLE INSURANCE? You should think of your motor vehicle insurance as another kind of protective gear while you are riding. While we at Motorcycle Law Group do not believe that motorcycling is dangerous, we do recognize that, in the event of an accident, riders have less protection around them and are therefore more susceptible to injury. If you are injured by another motorist, you are entitled to receive compensation for your injuries for medical bills, lost time from work, pain, suffering and inconvenience. That compensation will almost always come from the insurance coverage available to the people involved in the accident. • IF SOMEONE INJURES ME, WON’T THEIR INSURANCE PAY FOR MY INJURIES? Yes, but only up to the limits of their policy. Most people shop for motor vehicle insurance by price. They try to buy the cheapest insurance available. Therefore, most people buy the minimum amount their state requires. In North Carolina, that is 30,000. In Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia, the minimum amount is 25,000. In West Virginia, it’s 20,000. Regardless of how serious your injuries are, the other driver’s insurance will not have to pay you any more than their policy limits. If you are seriously injured in an accident, 20,000 to 30,000 will not be enough to cover your medical bills, lost wages, pain, suffering and inconvenience. • CAN’T I ALWAYS SUE THE OTHER PERSON? Yes, you can, but that will not change the amount of money that

the other person’s insurance company will have to pay you. If you sue and get a verdict of 300,000, the defendant’s company will still not have to pay more than the policy limits. This is because the insurance company is not paying because it owes you anything. The insurance company is paying because it owes the defendant protection. The defendant brought protection from the insurance company in case they had a claim brought against them. Most often, people buy the least amount of protection required by law in their state. Therefore- in most cases- the defendant’s insurance company will only have to pay you the minimum amount required in that state regardless of the seriousness of your injury or the size of the verdict. • WILL I BE ABLE TO RECOVER FROM THE DEFENDANT’S PERSONAL ASSETS? The answer to that question is usually no. Most people do not have personal assets that will cover the cost of serious injuries. Assets owned jointly with someone’s spouse- such as a house, land, vehicles and bank accounts- typically cannot be used to satisfy a judgment. Even if you find yourself in a situation where you can collect from a defendant’s personal assets, the defendant often will have the ability to declare bankruptcy and have your judgment against them discharged. • I HAVE FULL COVERAGE ON MY MOTORCYCLE, SO I AM COVERED, RIGHT? Not necessarily. Full coverage means that you purchased all the major coverages that your insurance company offers. What is more important to you as an injured rider is how much coverage you bought. If you also bought the minimum amount of insurance coverage, you will most likely receive only the minimum limits for your injury, regardless of how serious it is or the amount of the verdict that you receive in court. That is why it is important that you protect yourself with both uninsured motorist (UM) coverage and underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage. Continued On Page 24

• WHAT IS UNINSURED MOTORIST AND UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE, AND HOW DO THEY WORK? Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage protects you if you are injured by someone who does not have insurance. Your insurance company will pay you up to the limits of coverage for injuries caused by an uninsured motorist. However, what we see more often is a driver who does not have enough insurance to cover the injured client. That driver is underinsured, and the client is protected by their own underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage. If you have 100,000 in UIM coverage, then you have at least 100,000 to compensate yourself for injuries caused by another motorist. If you have 250,000, then you are covered for that amount. You can buy UIM coverage in most any amount up to 1 million, depending upon the insurance company and the rules of your state. • IS IT EXPENSIVE TO BUY MORE UIM INSURANCE? While insurance rates differ according to your age, driving record and place of residence, you often will be surprised at how little it costs to increase the coverage available to you. The more UM and UIM coverage that you buy, the less expensive it gets. The best thing to do is shop around and find out how much the additional coverage will cost you. One thing we can promise you is that it will be less expensive than being seriously injured in an accident and not having enough coverage available to you. • IF I HAVE SERVERAL MOTOR VEHICLES POLICIES, AM I ONLY PROTECTED BY THE POLICY

Frog Level MC 44th Anniversary Party By: Johnny Reb hen you get a call that the Frog Level MC is having their 44th anniversary party, you have got to be there. These are some of the best guys you will ever have a chance to meet. Down to earth and no bull. When I Old school with first met the Frogs, no posers. How they reminded me refreshing is of the brothers I used to hang with that? back in the late 70s and 80s. Old school with no posers. How refreshing is that? So, on 19 Jan, Blade, Mama Pat, Sassy and I took a ride out to celebrate their 44 years of brotherhood. When you walk in their clubhouse you really get a sense of their history. Old photos of brothers past and present plaster the walls. Burned bike parts and pieces from the old clubhouse that burned back in 2014 adorn the walls also. Me and Blade bellied up to the bar while the women went to the front room and caught up with the ladies of the Frogs. I

had a chance to talk to the VP, Dawg, we talked about some of their brothers who couldn’t be there, and he told me that I had just missed Mr. Norman. Now Mr. Norman is kind of a legend in these parts. He is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge on anything Harley-Davidson and also a founding member of FLMC. He had heart surgery recently and has had to retire, but he did show up earlier in the evening for some sausage and beans. Probably not an approved diet Mr. Norman! I’m sorry I missed seeing you again my friend. The Frogs have a lot of events, one is their annual pool tournament which is in January, this year is the 44th year for that. They also have an annual pistol shoot in June. Check out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine’s Cruisin’ Calendar for the date in June. We had great time, and I can’t wait for the next opportunity to hang out with FLMC. As usual I want to list the clubs that were present to show their respect: Ghost Riders MC Edgecombe County, Ghost Riders MC Lenoir County, Tuscarora MC, and Chosen Few MC. Long Road 2019, The 11th Year

By: Mike Allen he gypsies have a word, “Lungo Drom,” which translates into English as “Long Road.” Anytime there’s a road trip involved, there are promises and possibilities in the lessons that are only taught when you escape the rational and boot up for a long ride. The Long Road is not a cross-country gut check race, but it is a perfect fit for the chopper subculture. It is a chance to connect with old friends and make new ones. To paraphrase Rat Man Dave, “I can be in the middle of 50,000 people at a motorcycle event, but when I’m at Smokeout after Long Road, I’m with family.” The Long Road is not a group ride where we all line up for a kick-stands-up ceremony, it’s a gypsy ride which means you can ride with a few friends, a group, or take off by yourself at 5:00am or 10:00am. During Smokeout, the first-time riders will be presented with the highly coveted, serial numbered, Long Road medallion which will be used to gain access to the fabulous Long Road Lounge which serves as home base for all Long Road medallion holders and their friends. The Long Road party starts this year on June 9th in Natchez,

Mississippi at Plantation Park. The next day, we follow the “Blues Trail” along the Mississippi River to Clarksdale, where we catch some live blues at Ground Zero Blues Club. Tuesday morning, we head to Lynchburg, Tennessee for an after-hours tour of Jack Daniels Distillery. Wednesday, June 12th, we ride the Tail of the Dragon before camping on the grounds of Wheels Through Time Museum. Thursday, we end up at the Riders Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC. Friday, we have only a three-hour ride to the 20th edition of the greatest chopper event on earth, The Smokeout! AMCA Legends Frostbite Ride By Wally Wersching hat to do on New Year’s Day – sleep late to cure your hangover, sit in front of the TV watching college football all day, or spend time with friends, and eat some great food. For me, it was easy. I didn’t drink on New Year’s Eve, so I didn’t have a hangover. I was already burned out watching the college football bowl games. I searched the internet, and on the AMCA Legends Chapter website (https://www.amcalegendschapter.com/), I found that they were having their Annual Frostbite Ride and Social. This year, Mike Bruso was holding the event at his home at 529 Morrow Motor Road in Forest City. The invitation said to arrive at about 11:30am, have some warm coffee then go for a ride at about noon. After the ride, a full BBQ Lunch with all the fixin’s would be available. I couldn’t make it for the before ride coffee, and decided to ride to the event after 2:00PM. They would all be back from their ride by then. I looked on the internet to find out where Morrow Motor Road was in Forest City. After checking the map, I thought I knew where I could catch it. Once on the road, I’d just check the mailboxes for number 529. I left home heading west on Rte. 74. It was surprisingly warm with temps in the mid 60’s. That was great for New Year’s Day. I exited at Rte. 221A, and headed south. Morrow

Motor Road would cross a couple miles down (according to the map on-line). At the stoplight, I veered to the right onto Chase High Road, but no Morrow Motor Road. I continued for a couple more miles then started to look for a place to turn around. I must have missed it. I was pleasantly surprised that at the place I wanted to turn around by Chase Middle School, the road was Morrow Motor Road. What luck! I rode down the road for about a mile, and pulled into Mike’s yard on the right. There were bikes and cars parked all around the yard. I

found a place, and pulled out a stack of Full Throttle magazines. On the way to the garage, I met a man zipping up his jacket getting ready to head home. I offered him a couple magazines, and he stuffed them into his saddlebag on his old Shovelhead before he left. I placed the rest of the magazines on a table in the garage near the food table. The cook was outside tending to his large BBQ Cooker when I arrived. There were people sitting at the tables socializing while eating. The food was great. I was surprised to see Vic Velvet leaving carrying his guitar. We talked for a moment and he said that I just missed him entertaining the group. He had been doing that for a few hours. I was sorry that I missed his performance. Later, when I was talking with Bud, the chapter president, I asked him where they rode earlier. He said that they didn’t go for as ride. It seems like at noon, there weren’t many riders, so they waited for a while and finally when they were about to head out, the food was ready, so they stayed and ate instead of riding. Slowly most of the people left after getting a plate of BBQ to take home. I talked with Ken, the chapter vice president, for a while before I left too. I really enjoy spending time with the members of the Legend chapter. They are very friendly, and all have the love of old motorcycles (especially Harleys). I still enjoy remembering about the old Harley Panheads I built back in the day. They were fun to work on, and also a lot of fun to ride. Maybe one day, I’ll get another. But for now, I’ll stick with “Miss Vickie” my 2009 Victory. It fits all my needs for now.

Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson Super Bowl LIII Weekend Tailgate Party

Story & Photo by: Chi ort Bragg Harley-Davidson celebrated this year’s Super Bowl the entire weekend! That’s right February 1st through February 3rd was a weekend-long tailgate party. There were many deals and promotions going on. One of which, if you purchased a new Harley Davidson at Fort Bragg HD during those dates you received a Free Big Screen TV. Other festivity perks included Free food, Free beer & Live entertainment. The band Mark McKinney & Co put on a fabulous show from the upper deck inside Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson. While Carolina Ale House was downstairs with wings galore! The music and food were a welcomed bonus to the weekend’s spectacular celebration to honor Super Bowl 53. Fort Bragg HD employees were dressed in their favorite team jerseys on Saturday; and all customers that come in wearing their favorite jerseys were entered in a drawing for a $100 gift certificate. So, at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson you can be a winner even if your team didn’t make it to the Super bowl! This in contrast to Maroon 5’s lead singer, Adam Levine, removing his shirt for his epic halftime performance. Tension was in the air and some fans were concerned about little to no

score on the board. Then, the Grammy award-winning band rocked Atlanta with the help of some great friends! Travis Scott and Big Boi of Outkast also performed during the halftime show. Equinox Percussion and Voice of Atlanta gospel choir were featured with the band in a phenomenal version of “Girls Like You”! Lanterns lit the sky to read “One Love” as Maroon 5 took the stage for the finale! ! If you missed it, you can look up the Pepsi Super bowl halftime presented at Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta Georgia, it was really something and after the performance the game got back on the move! The scoreboard did move more in the second half of the game. The New England Patriots won 13-3 against the Los Angeles Rams. Thanks Fort Bragg HD for kicking off a great football weekend. Widowmaker CDR Customization Concepts By: Hank Thibodeau - Widowmaker CDR Pros - Motorcycles are an extension of yourself. The satisfaction is in making your bike yours and how you want it. There is pride in your ideas and style. Cons- Money spent on your bike is money spent. It generally does not add mass value to the bike. It is solely for you. The more you customize your bike, the smaller the market becomes of possible future buyers if you choose to trade in your bike or sell it at a later date. THE CUSTOMIZING PROCESS:

Dialog - First and foremost, find someone you trust. Beyond trust, you should be able to have a smooth, open ability to talk about what you want. Be willing to listen and be open to suggestions from this person. You should be able to ask questions about what you are wanting without issue. Have A Budget- This does not have to be set in stone, but have an idea of what you are willing to spend. Educate yourself on product cost vs. value. Some things look great, but may not have the ability to last as long as you may expect. Or, the product may look good on paper but not on your bike. Have A Plan - It is easy to get off track. When this happens, trust is lost, and budget is always blown. Plans are easy to achieve and there is always a trend in the choices. So, we generally recommend having pictures of multiple bikes and

styles to be able find a theme in what the client is looking for, even if it looks scattered. Pro Tip 1 – Keep a picture book of images of what you are looking to accomplish with your build. Pro Tip 2 – Consider types of products that you can move from bike to bike. For example, Ridewright Wheels allows you to move their wheels from bike to bike based on interchangeable hubs. Pro Tip 3 – Research fit and finish of manufacturing. Some products fail at high rates. NEXT IN THE PROCESS - WHERE TO START?

Consider what YOU are needing to satisfy first? Ride quality, comfort, performance, or visual? For some, this is easy, for many it can be a little overwhelming. This is where the person you are working with comes into play. Performance Upgrades- Who doesn’t want more power, or a better handling bike? Performance is not just going fast. It is not peak HP on the dyno. You can have a stock bike with a great suspension and outperform a bike with more power. Remember, majority of your ride is cornering. Therein lies the fun. That is why we ride to the mountains and look for the twisties. Plan Ahead- If you are working with a budget and want more power, better sound, etc., buy an exhaust that will work for you with all of your possible future wants. No need to buy twice. Same thing for your air cleaner kit and tuning device. Suspension- This is something that most people overlook when it comes to performance. People are happy with the way the bike rides or handles and believe it can’t get better. It is very easy and cost effective to make your bike ride and handle not good, but GREAT. Pro Tip 4: The biggest performance bang for your buck is a tuner, free breathing exhaust, and a high-flow intake. CHANGES TO THE LOOKS OF YOUR BIKE…

This can be hard to visualize sometimes. So, start with the basics, like handle bars and seat position. If it is not comfortable to you, it does not matter how it looks. Chrome Or Powder Coat- Some people like lots of chrome, some like a little, some like none. It does not have to be all chrome or all black. Also, be open minded and look at different options for colors. Choose colors that work well with the color of your bike and has the best appeal to you. Educate yourself on the are options that are out there. Pro Tip 5: Give yourself a break. Rarely do things work out right without an adjustment. Customization is a process. As you know, the ride is as important as the destination. SO IN SHORT: Find someone you trust and can work and talk freely with, have a budget and a plan, be open to ideas and suggestions, and….wait for it…Don’t buy twice, but if you do, that’s why there is eBay!

Easyriders Bike Show After Party At Tank Town Tavern By: Buzz he Easyriders Bike Show is an all day party so when the Expo center closed for the day, the party just migrates! Weeks before the weekend of the bike show, Angelo, the purveyor of good times at Tank Town Tavern, and I hatched the plan to host an afterparty to keep the party going and just for the hell of it! It’s easy to have a party It was a damn at Tank Town ‘cause good night that Angelo and Brandy (who we all know is led to a less fun really running the joint) morning. really hustle hard and make sure that everyone has a cold drink and is having a good time. Tank Town is sweet hang out complete with pool tables, dart boards, and plenty of room to move around. Out

back there is a big ol’ deck, an outside stage and on cold nights a burn barrel to stand around. This was one of those nights! It was warm inside the bar and Moses Jones and the dirty south revival, a local 3-piece band with stand-up base, sit down drummer and guitar were really putting on a show. The bar was packed by 8:30 when I got there, but luckily the Tank has a roll up window that creates an outside bar on the deck. It wasn’t long before the celebrities like Bob Karney and Sean Clayton of Karney Law Firm, Mark Hendrix of Tobacco Road H-D, Zach and Kristen of the Rebel Spirit and a slew of bike show competitors came in to blow off some steam. Angelo and Brandy kept the drinks flowing, Moses Jones was jamming, and we had a great time.

We ended up closing Tank Town down at 2am with some of the locals. It was a damn good night that led to a less fun morning. But hey, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Let me tell you one thing: If you want to have a good time in Charlotte, Tank Town Tavern is the place to be. It’s a great biker bar and they always have something going on. Burly Beards & Bad Ass Girly Tats!

By Buzz ometimes on a Saturday morning you want to hang out with bearded men and checking out some ladies with bad ass tattoos. Good news y’all, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson makes dreams come true…and they put on some great events. As with any good event they called in a few of their friends to pull it off. Registration was out front of Smokin’ HarleyDavidson with a DJ spinning tunes and a couple of vendors. Before long those interested in showing off were lined up and Smokin’ H-D GM Ray Perry and Brother Bill started off the event by calling up the esteemed judges. Jill Dyson “The Queen Of Hustle” and the First Lady of Biker Trash Nation, Vandee Shoaf who both tout strong biker beard judging skills were first up. They called up the beard contestants one by one and judged them

meticulously. Let me tell you, there was a lot of stroking, braiding and even a bit of beard sniffing going on. Now, I tell ya, you’re pretty brave to sniff a man’s beard, and if it smells like anything other than coffee, beer or road grime, something is wrong! Jill and Vandee kept the crowd in stitches as they inspected the short, long, thick and even scented beards in the competition. Next up was the Bad Ass Girly Tats competition. The esteemed judges for this portion of the day consisted of The President of Biker Trash Nation, Wayne Pinnix, and a panel of judges from Black Clover Tattoo. There were a handful of ladies and they all had

some bad ass tattoos. One by one they paraded their ink up to the judges and then let the crowd have a peak as well. Wayne, who is no stranger to the microphone, kept the competition going while the artists shared their evaluations. From skulls and flames to floral tattoos these girls really did have some bad ass tats. None of them were little dinky tattoos either, their art was full sleeves, legs and back pieces. I was impressed with the amount of good solid work that showed up, and I had no envy for the judges to pick just one winner! The judges took a few minutes to deliberate and handed their results over to Ray to deliver the news. Michael Gaffner took home $100 and two tickets to the Easyriders Bike Show Tour for having the best beard of the day. it was a nice looking medium length standard biker beard, always a good look and a favorite with the judges. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine’s 21st Attempt - Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party And Oyster Roast Fear Of February Party

By Buzz Photos By: Buzz, Doc & Aardvark nce a year, for 6 hours, the Fear Of February party comes to town, and you don’t want to miss it! The party has always been intended to be Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine’s reader appreciation party, and over the last 2 decades the party has turned out to be a barn burner. Especially when the weather cooperates. We have had every form of weather imaginable including a few years that it snowed, sleeted, or was so windy we couldn’t keep the fire lit under the oyster steamer. Bad weather is how the party got its name. But the motto of the day is “Sometimes the weather is bad, but the party is always great”, and we always see to that! The Fear of February Party’s 21st Attempt landed at Xtreme Wings N Things in Winston-Salem, NC. Chad and Brandee run this powerhouse of a biker bar and have a party reputation. The bar occupies the upstairs portion of Smokin’ Harley-Davidson making this an ideal place to party. We lucked out and had cool air and clear skies for this year’s party, perfect for an oyster roast. We got to Xtreme early and our team of Fear of February veterans soon had the Full Throttle Magazine tent up and the oyster cooking station fired up. We started off the day with 1000 pounds of oysters that were sponsored by Karney Law Firm - The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers and Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. We started crackin’ those raw oysters open at noon while we were waiting for the cooker to get hot enough to steam a few batches. Once the steamer got hot, Wade and Lucas or whoever was available were pulling out baskets of steamed oysters every 20 minutes or so for the rest of the day. Doc had his camp burner going with a cast iron skillet full of

butter and oysters. He always has a hoppin’ table full of kimchi and other fun ways to swallow oysters. Every new basket of steamed oysters was met by a new row of hungry bikers and a few regulars would swing by and grab a few fresh steamed rocks. It was great to see a lot of our friends come down the line. Inside Xtreme Wings N Things the bar was packed! There were two bars set up to keep the beer and drinks flowing and the kitchen did a hell of a job putting out orders. There were three bands in the line-up and Double Down started the party off. Double Down is an acoustic duo and did a great job keeping the hits coming for the better part of 4 hours. This year, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson hosted and judged the first ever Fear of February Bike Show. There were two classes to the bike show: People’s Choice and a Judged Class. you could vote for your favorite bike as many times as you liked. People’s choice votes were cast with white raffle tickets that you collected with any purchase at Xtreme Wings or Smokin’. Brother Bill and GM Ray Perry from Smokin’ had the heavy duty job of judging the bike show entries. There were around 20 bikes lined up on Smokin’s front porch just begging to win. All the bikes were show winners, but after all the details were taken in Eric Winston of Charlotte took home the Judged class honors with a sweet custom 2007 Harley-Davidson Road King. The grand prize for the Judged class was a photo shoot and to have your bike featured in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Look for a spread on Eric’s ride in an upcoming issue, you won’t want to miss this stunning bike. People’s choice / Bad Ass Bike award went to Brian Armstrong with his super clean H-D WideGlide. Congratulations to you both! Renea and Caroline were set up in the Full Throttle Magazine booth selling event t-shirts, Girl Scout cookies and raffle tickets on a 55” Ultra 4k TV and a Diamond Heart Pendant from Hayes Jewelers in Lexington. They had their hands full most of the day. Lydia and Dawn K were also in and out of the booth helping out with ticket sales and other odds and ends. Around 3pm, we brought out Little Annie to play a classic Full Throttle Magazine mini bike game of ‘Hitter In The Sh*tter’. It’s basically a modern kinky biker style twist on jousting. You may get a peek at what we are talking about on the Fear of February event pictures on our website, but mostly it was a “what happens at FOF party stays at FOF party type situation.

After a few runs at Little Annie, we turned our attention to the custom mobile burnout pit that Zach from The Rebel Spirit built for the Burnout Competition. It is a sweet two-piece steel diamond plated burnout pit that allows you to burn rubber without tearing up the asphalt parking lot. Zack also built this sweet custom trophy from spare parts we scavenged from Smokin’s throw away bin. The finishing touches came from Bacher Metal Works who did a fantastic job laser etching the trophy’s name plate. First two up in the pit were Jeremy and Cornfield from Deathwish Motor Culture who rode up with some of their crew 100 miles from Cameron, NC to hang out and burndown some tires. Both put out some solid smoke, but David “Goofy” Tatum pulled in and smoked his tire for a minute or more and took home the coveted custom handmade trophy. I was surprised there was any rubber left on that donut when he left the pit. Back inside Xtreme Wings N Things, the bar was still packed! Chris McPeck was keeping the afternoon tunes going playing some good ol’ Seger and other songs you remember. On his set break, we took over the mic to emcee the beer chug-

ging contest. We had 15 guys in the competition but only 4 ladies. Last year’s female champion CJ was back to defend her title and there was no question that she meant business. She drank the competition under the table and waited to challenge the men’s champion. We had to run 3 heats of 5 guys to weed through and get the true drinkers paired up. Guess there was just a ton of dudes that wanted free beer and hell, I don’t blame them! There were some valiant efforts put in by MA’AM, Redman, Mike, and the rest of the guys, but Dane put ‘em to shame one draft after another. When it came to the champions challenge, he even defeated CJ who had smoked the men’s champion last year. Pretty impressive! Well now it was getting close to 6pm and the only thing left for us to do pull tickets for the raffle prizes. First up

was the diamond heart pendant that was sponsored by Hayes Jewelers in Lexington. Every year Bruce Hayes, the King of Diamonds, hooks us up with a beautiful piece of jewelry for a lucky winner. Kamilla the youngest of the Rebel Spirit staff was on hand to pull tickets for us and on our first draw the diamond heart pendant found a new home around Lori Wood’s neck! Congratulations! Then, came the 55” TV raffle, the moment we were all waiting for. Kamilla again pulled the winning ticket and Alison Mize won the TV! It was great to see Alison win the grand prize, I see her nearly every year at the FOF party and we have a blast each year. Congrats y’all. As soon as the TV was claimed the opposite side of Xtreme Wings N Things erupted as Fair Warning took the stage to bring the party home. This is the second time Fair Warning has played the Fear of February party and they rocked both times! The crowd stayed into the night and finished off one hell of a party. Parties like these do not happen without a lot of help from your friends. NC Motorcycle Lobby Day

By: Shannon Rights he 2019 North Carolina Motorcycle Lobby Day was held Wednesday, February 6th in Raleigh. Motorcyclists from across North Carolina took time off from work to ride into our capital to meet with their legislators. CBA/ABATE of NC has hosted this event for many years. In 2018, Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group partnered with CBA/ABATE of NC to help facilitate change in North Carolina for all motorcyclists. For over 30 years Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group has worked on behalf of motorcyclists and motorcycle rights. They do so on the local, state, and federal levels of government. Tyler Stiles, who manages Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group’s Raleigh office, is the registered lobbyist for CBA/ABATE of NC. A few of us rode into Raleigh on Tuesday so that we could hang out with old friends before getting down to the business of Lobby Day. I left Walnut Cove at about 10am and took the long way to Asheboro, where I met up with the Charlotte and Randolph County Chapters of CBA/ABATE of NC. We

continued to Raleigh via 64, enjoying the great weather and fellowship. We got into Raleigh at about 3:30pm. After unloading the bikes and checking into the hotel, we walked down to the Flying Saucer for a beverage before eventually meeting at the top floor restaurant for supper later that evening. The views from the hotel’s top floor were exceptional. While we could have hung out there all night, we decided to make it an early night so that we could be ready for Lobby Day. Wednesday morning dawned bright and clear, and we made our way to the conference room to be briefed by CBA/ABATE of NC Legislative Director, Charlie Boone, and our lobbyist, Tyler Stiles. We were also happy to have Ed Cleary and Lincoln Infield with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine join us and the other motorcyclists who, although not members of CBA, were interested in protecting the rights of riders in North Carolina. There were about twenty attendees who had never been to a Lobby Day. Once the briefing was over, Lincoln took a group picture, and everyone walked to the Legislative buildings.

There we met with our various Representatives and Senators, working in groups that mixed those who had never been to a Lobby Day with more experienced members. After lobbying our legislators, we met up at Tobacco Road Brewery for luncheon sponsored by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. There we were debriefed and enjoyed a great lunch. The Buncombe County Chapter of CBA/ABATE was recognized for having the most members in attendance that day. It was a close call between them, Charlotte, and the Gaston Chapter. Next year we will add a 2nd place award. Nine of the fourteen chapters in the state were represented, as well as a NOMAD from out of state. Next year we hope to have all fourteen chapters represented. We are also looking to increase participation from other clubs, organizations, and independent motorcyclists. We ask that everyone be on the lookout for updates concerning issues before the legislature that are of interest to motorcyclists. These include bills aimed at curtailing distracted driving, prohibiting blowing grass clippings in the roadway, allowing motorcyclists to wear protective masks, and giving

motorcyclists equal access to public parking garages. An Irishman had been drinking at a pub all night. The bartender finally said that the bar was closing. So, the Irishman stood up to leave fell flat on his face. He tried to stand one more time; same result. He figured he’ll crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that will sober him up. Once outside, he stood up and fell on his face again. So he decided to crawl the four blocks home. Again, he fell flat on his face. He crawled through the door and into his bedroom. When he reached his bed he tried one more time to stand up. This time he managed to pull himself upright, but he quickly fell right into the bed and is sound asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. He was awakened the next morning to his wife standing over him, shouting, so you’ve been drinking again!” Putting on an innocent look, and intent on bluffing it out he said, what makes you say that?” the pub just called; you left your wheelchair there again.” This morning, I was beaten up by a busty woman in an elevator. I was staring at her boobs when she said, “Would you please press one?” So I did. I don’t remember much after that.

I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked!  As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old

Two Irishmen, Patrick and Michael were adrift in a lifeboat following a dramatic escape from a burning freighter. While rummaging through the boat’s provisions, Patrick stumbled across an old lamp. Secretly hoping that a genie would appear, he rubbed the lamp vigorously. To the amazement of Patrick, a genie came forth. This particular genie stated that he could only deliver one wish, not the standard three. Without giving much thought to the matter, Patrick blurted out, “Make the entire ocean into Guinness beer!” The genie clapped his hands with a deafening crash, and immediately the entire sea turned into the finest brew ever sampled by mortals. Simultaneously, the genie vanished. Only the gentle lapping of Guinness on the hull broke the stillness as the two men considered their circumstances. Michael looked disgustedly at Patrick whose wish had been granted. After a long, tension-filled moment, he spoke, “Nice going, Patrick! Now we’re going to have to pee in the boat!”

Two groups, one including members of Congress and the other of private citizens, were asked by the president to study a problem that had been plaguing the United States for a very long time. After several months and of course millions of dollars they came back to the president and told him they had completed their study of the problem. The president then asked the politicians for the solution. With a blank and confused look members told the president that they just “studied the problem” and that it never occurred to them to think about how to solve it. Upset and frustrated the president asked the private citizens if they found out what the problem was and how to get rid of it. Without saying a word they all nodded their heads and pointed to the group of politicians.

A cowboy, who just moved to Montana from Texas, walks into a bar and orders three mugs of Bud. He sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more. The bartender approaches and tells the cowboy, “You know, a mug goes flat after I draw it. It would taste better if you bought one at a time.” The cowboy replies, “Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in Arizona , the other is in Colorado. When we all left our home in Texas, we promised that we’d drink this way to remember the days when we drank together. So I’m drinking one beer for each of my brothers and one for myself.” The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there. The cowboy becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way. He orders three mugs and drinks them in turn. One day, he comes in and only orders two mugs. All the regulars take notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, “I don’t want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss.” The cowboy looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns in his eyes and he laughs. “Oh, no, everybody’s just fine,” he explains. “It’s just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking.” “It hasn’t affected my brothers though.”

Charlotte Easyriders Bike Show 2019 Best In Years

But the excitement in the air had everyone smiling warmly. Soon as I walked in, it was handshakes and hugs from friends I see often around here to ones ain’t seen in a while. Folks were looking forward to the new location, The Park Expo Center. The new place has on“Oh My God,” site parking so no more was said a thouwandering the streets sand times as of uptown Charlotte. people looked at Multiple rooms meant some of the paint lots of space to display motorcycles. From the jobs on display. moment I walked in, I was impressed with the new place. So much so that it took me 30 minutes of talking and looking before I made it to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine booth. I love the vibe as I walked the floor and shot videos just before the doors opened. Background music was testing the sound system while crews replaced lights in Liberty Hall. Make those machines sparkle! People were hustling around setting up displays and wiping down bikes. Almost ready for another great show. Cool motorcycles and vendors in all directions. The Easyriders Bike Show Tour occupied three rooms in the Expo Center. In the door and to the left was Freedom Hall where we handed out thousands of magazines at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine booth. Renea had several reps from across the Carolinas helping stuff yellow bags. Brandy and Dana from Tank Town Tavern were there busting ass and looking good helping us get the word out about the official Full Throttle Magazine / Tank Town Tavern Easyriders Bike Show After Party that evening. They brought a ton of energy and some Tank Town Tavern cozies to pass out. Huge thanks to everyone who came by and worked the booth with us.

Freedom Hall was where bikers could find Full Throttle Saloon gear and check out lots of the local custom bikes in the show plus vendors. A crowd would gather around Rhett Rotten every time he did a Freestyle Roller Show. Hard to explain, so check out the extra photos on the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine website. I see Rhett once in a while since he does the Wall of Death and other crazy things on motorcycles. Outside of the expo center the Deadbeat Customs Stunt Division put on a few shows per day. They had the driveway blocked off and were ripping wheelies, rolling burnouts and tossing shirts into the crowd. It was some good old FTW biker stuff and a nice addition to the day. The past few years the Easyriders Bike Show Tour has included custom cars and hot rods. Independence Hall had lots of cool cars. There some resto rods, race cars, rat rods and customs. I think the mid-engine, V-8 Corvair was my favorite. Once bikers had walked the first two rooms, they headed up the walkway to Liberty Hall and the main show. I had to slow down and checkout the bikes along the way. There were cool customs and show bikes everywhere in the Expo Center. To me it looked like a large turnout of bikes overall. extra strength biker vaccination treatment for the Winter Blues. Lots of space and cool bikes. Indian Motorcycles Charlotte had a huge display. They were showing off some cool machines. And of course, they had one of those Indian FTR 750 Flat Track race bikes that dominated racing the past two Summers on display. I ain’t much into new bikes, but, oh man, that new Indian FTR 1200 sure would be fun in the mountains. Michael Lichter is The Motorcycle Photographer of our time. He had a studio set up in Liberty Hall where folks could watch him shoot feature bikes. I hung out at the Easyriders Garage. That’s where the Captain America and Billy Bikes were on the lift being worked on. Those are replicas built decades ago and not run in many years. Rob Schwellinger; owner of R&R Cycles, Tampa, Florida, now working out of Huffman Performance & Restoration in Lakeland; had the job of getting them running. By Saturday afternoon he had them firing and farting but needed to re-jet the carbs to have them running on Sunday. Mike

Beland posted a video of him kick starting the Billy Bike. Custom motorcycles of all kinds were everywhere. The wildest baggers you could imagine with tall front tires were next to traditional skinny choppers. There were antique and stock machines too, so something for just about everyone who likes motorcycles. Some of those bikes I’ve seen and love. But I think there were more high-quality custom bikes from around the country at the Easyriders Bike Show this year than in the past. “Oh My God,” was said a thousand times as people looked at some of the paint jobs on display. I wish I could have slowed down time a little so had more time to examine the awesome machines. I’m a Shovelhead, simple black bike kind of guy, but appreciate all the works of mechanical art there. For the new-style bagger crowd, there were lots of bikes to drool over. The Easyriders Show is the place for unique customs. Many are works of art. And others I would love to ride for a day or so. I was glad to see young guys building traditional choppers. There were lots of bikes at this show for me to vote for as my favorites in the Peoples’ Choice.

I appreciated that there were more machines that Old Guys Like Me would enjoy. Pans and Shovels and Knuckles, oh my, all the way down the row. Yep, more Panheads and Shovelheads than at most shows these days. The coolest section at the show was Prism Supply’s Congregation Corner and the Antique Motorcycle Club of America row. The vendors were busy all day selling those biker needs that ain’t always in stores. There were the usual vendors and some new ones this year. I should have made another pass through the vendors to see what I missed. Most of the show is bikes and vendors from this area. But Easyriders brings a big show to Charlotte. All day there was entertainment on the stage. Saturday afternoon Jasmine Cain gave us a healthy dose of American Made Rock-NRoll. Between bands, the Purrfect Angelz put on an aerial, fire and dance show and did meet and greets. I saw them after the show posing with guys and their motorcycles. NTC Drift Trikes put on demos a few times. By the afternoon, folks commented on how much they liked the layout this year. Yeah, there was some grumbling during set up about three rooms. I liked our spot in The Dungeon, hope we are there next year. The Park Expo Center has 2,500 parking spots and 30 RV hook ups so they can handle the Easyriders Bike Show very well. My compliments also for the great food service, beer sales points, security staff, bathrooms and entire facility. I saw lots of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine advertisers at the Easyriders Bike Show. From Mike Beland, A-1 Cycles, and Iron Horse Motorcycles to Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer Bob Karney and many more. I’m proud to be associated with all of y’all who are active and involved in motorcycling in so many ways. All three exhibit halls were filled with bikers carrying our yellow Full Throttle Magazine bags. Overall, I think Easyriders brought their best show in years to Charlotte. It’s really all about the bikes. There were some awesome machines there. Great seeing y’all who stopped by The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine booth. What Are You Called To Do?

ros and Bro-ettes If you’re a Christian do you honor God or something else? Do you go to Church just to say well I done my duty for this week, or are you just going cause you’re supposed to? Sure, you’re supposed to go, but if that’s the only reason, you’re wrong. You’re not supposed to just go and sit in a building, then when it’s over think that’s all. You are the Church, get out and tell people about Jesus. If you want to be in a Biker Ministry, then you need to do what you’re called to do. If you want to be a Christian Biker and wear a patch, then go out to different places like, bike rallies, Harley Shops, any event, grocery store, even Wal-Mart, anywhere you can, talk to people and tell them about Jesus and His love. If you’re just strutting around with a patch on like you are somebody, you’re doing it for the wrong reason. Jesus is looking for someone that loves Him and someone that will be in obedience to Him, by going out and doing what He has called you to do, and that’s to tell people about His grace and His love for them. Just remember as you put on that patch, that it’s no better than any other patch. Some may do more than others that’s ok, it’s not your place to handle it. Let God take care of them and just pray for them instead of downing them. Just ask the Lord to help you focus on what you’re supposed to be doing and do it. We all have a purpose in what we do

each day. People need to see Jesus in us. Walk the walk and talk the talk. We all need to be still and pray and listen to the Lord and where He wants you to go. Don’t ever think you have nothing to say, He’ll give you the words to say. If you’re supposed to go somewhere and don’t have the funds, and He wants you there He’ll supply the way. Exodus 18: 20: “And you shall teach them the Statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do.” Isaiah 40: 31: “But those who wait on the Lord, Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”

It’s Chili At The VFW

By: Rick Gammons had a lot going on February 3rd. It was a Sunday and quite a pleasant one. Things to do kept me busy for most of the day. But, in the back of my mind I knew about the chili cookoff at the VFW Post 9899. The cookoff began at 2 pm with several varieties of delicious chili for tasting. I have attended several chili events at the VFW over the years and they have all been excellent. This year, Peggy and I got there just before 3 pm and guess what, the chili was gone! I think somebody(s) had been doing some early tasting...ha! Everybody told us to go get some chili, but when we went to the hall, the empty chili containers were being taken up. Shoot! Next year, we need to be on time. Congratulations to Joanne Rion. She is the chili champion this time. Chili was not the only thing going on. It was also a huge social day and the bar room was quite full. People you knew and people you did not. Didn’t matter. There seems to always be plenty of laughter and lots of BS to spread around! Relationships are strong there and everyone gets along. As stated earlier, the day was pleasant for a February. This brought the horseshoe players. These guys are hardcore. If it’s possible to pitch, they are out there. If you like horseshoes, then Sunday at the VFW is your day. They enjoy having new people to come and pitch with them.
