o far, we have had a pretty mild winter in the Carolinas. Lots of rain, some flooding and a few tornados, and just a little snow. That could all change, because, after all, we are living in the Carolinas, but for right now, we are good.

By the time you read this, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 22nd Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona Oyster Roast & Valentine’s Day Fear Of February Party will be part of our legacy. See the story in this issue so that if you weren’t able to attend, you can envy those who did. As the saying goes, “Sometimes the weather is bad, but the party is always great. “This year we got a “double”. We had good weather AND a great party!

I do not give any credence to the notion that the “riding season” ever ends in the Carolinas, but things do slow down a bit in the winter months.

On Sunday, February 2nd Punxsutawney Phil could not find his shadow on Gobbler’s Knob thus predicting an early spring and If The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar is any indication, and I think it is, winter must be nearly over. Charlotte CBA Spring Show Celebrates Lady Riders

47th annual Charlotte Concerned Bikers Assoc Spring Swap Meet & Bike Show is just around the corner and we are very excited to dedicate this event to all Lady Riders!! In 2020, 1 in 5 motorcyclists are women, nearly double the percentage in 2009. They continue to be the fastest growing market segment within the motorcycle industry, and we want to celebrate them!

Whether it is on a Sport Bike, a Cruiser, a Dirt Bike, a Motocross Bike, an Enduro Bike or a full Dresser, more and more women prefer to ride alone, or alongside their partner, rather than on the back seat. They also love to ride with other women riders. Female Motorcycle RC’s and MC’s are gaining popularity across the country. One of the first MC’s, Motor Maids, was founded in 1940, and is the oldest existing women’s club in the US. Many other clubs have been formed since that time, such as Chrome Angelz RC and Leather & Lace MC. These are just a few organizations that have Chapters throughout the US and internationally. Joining a riding club provides a way for women to share their passion for motorcycle riding with like-minded ladies. he

Burnouts 4 Cancer Story by Tammy Bowman Photos by Alan Dockery his all started when Mark Bowman saw a post on Facebook about a 4 year-old little boy, Wyatt Spann, from Alabama who had brain cancer. With that being said, anyone who knows Mark knows he has the BIGGEST heart and he wanted to do something to help this family.

Wyatt liked burnouts and soon it became a worldwide effort to do burnouts for Wyatt. To help cheer up a young boy and raise awareness for childhood cancers. Sadly, Wyatt passed away soon after the movement grew.

His family has changed the fund raisers to Burnouts 4 Cancer.

Mark, who has a history of organizing charity fund raisers, was recognized in 2019

as one of the Bob Karney Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer’s Bulldog Heroes. He contacted Greg and Christy Spann, Wyatt’s parents for permission to do a ride. Quickly a charity ride was organized in two weeks for February 1, 2020. Wyatt passed away on January 16, but Mark said the ride was still on, instead of a charity ride it would be a memorial ride.

Lazy Hogz in Hickory is where the ride started. There were 76 bikers that came out to show their support for this little boy. There was a banner there for all the registrants to sign in memory of Wyatt. From Lazy Hogz, the ride went to Zipper’s Restaurant in Lincolnton. We finished at The Wizard Saloon where wheelies and Burnouts For Wyatt were done by some of the bikers and some in cages. Kevin Smith was there and, as always, laid some rubber down. Wyatt loved burnouts!

301 Brothers

By: Len Montgomery kay, so North Carolina may not be the place you expect to hear discussions of a Polar Run on a motorcycle. Sure, they have “5k polar runs” on foot. And there are some out there crazier than bikers doing something called a “polar plunge.” I’m never trying that one. But on a motorcycle? I mean, we have all four seasons like the rest of the country.

But all four seasons often occur in a single day. Nonetheless, 301 Brothers held their Fourth annual Polar Run, damn the weather. And it was AWESOME! Saturday, January 18th, 2020 started out quite chilly. As I was preparing to leave my home in Smithfield, NC at 9 a.m., it was a sunny 34 degrees. But a look at a motorcycle wind chill chart told me at 55 mph, that 34 degree temperature would feel like 18 degrees. And with no windshield or front fairing, I was sure it would actually feel more like -18 degrees. But determined to be there, I layered up, snapped those chaps on and down the road I went. BRRRR!!

A short ride later I arrive in Four Oaks, NC at the 301 Brothers clubhouse. There were several bikes there already and there was a plethora of activities in preparation of the big day. I’m not sure all the hustle and bustle was in preparation though. In fact, I’m quite certain a good portion of the activity could be attributed to knocking the chill off. But I guarantee that no one was still asleep when they arrived.

Outside the clubhouse, some were stacking wood for building a bonfire for later in the day. Tables were being set up alongside a smoker where BBQ chicken, green beans and potatoes would be served after the ride. Pop up canopies were going up. And inside, breakfast of deer sausage was being served to those huddled by the heat.

39 degrees. Referencing my trusty wind chill chart, I saw that the wind chill on the first leg of the ride to Southern Riders of Harnett County would increase to 25 degrees. Not quite enough to begin shedding layers, but we take what we can get.

So, a modest size group of riders head out.

Of course, Southern Riders had laid out the red carpet for us all. First of all, it was warm inside. I’m not sure if it felt so warm because it felt so cold outside, but this old boy was NOT complaining a bit. Hot coffee was ready for those who needed help with the thaw. Hot buttered popcorn, pretzels and other snacks were on every table. The hospitality was what I have come to expect when visiting with Southern Riders. They know how to make you feel at home!

After everyone was refreshed, we headed out to the second stop, Fallen Brotherhood in Dunn, NC. This is one the nicest stops. Not just on this run, but on every run, I’ve ever been on. Fallen Brotherhood holds events at a public venue called Cypress House. Setting on Rhodes Pond. This place is very nice, the kind place where you can accommodate large groups for special events. And if you’re lucky, hear tales of the ghost that still inhabits the building. And you may even hear civil war cannons firing across the cypress tree filled pond.

The third stop on the ride is Pitcher’s Bar in Benson. By now it is in the 40s and the ride is starting to take a larger form as a few more bikes have joined in along the way at each stop.

Not only were they hosting our run, but they were preparing for Clayton Pitcher’s birthday party later that night with Hank Jr. tribute band “All My Rowdy Friends.” We’ll save the full band review for another time. But the short of it is, see this band if the opportunity presents itself. And of course, stop by to see Clayton, Billy Jo, Tammy and Amanda and the rest at Pitchers Bar when you’re out their way.

Last stop of the day was back to 301 Brothers clubhouse.

There were several people there to greet the half frozen, half thawed group as we rumbled into the parking lot. The aroma of BBQ chicken and all the fixin’s was strong in the air. The bonfire was lit (as were we). Birdie’s Beads and Blades was set up outside with an assortment of wares. And Birdie was inside sewing patches as fast as she could. We love Birdie and appreciate all she does for our community!

What else can I tell you? The chicken was excellent. We even had ladies from the local CBA bring us two pans of homemade banana pudding. One of them dipped a bowl especially for me and brought it out to me because the first pan was practically inhaled within moments of being uncovered. It was scrumptious!!

All in all, it was a great day and a great ride. There is nothing better than riding and hanging with true brothers and sisters! And then, like true North Carolina weather, the rain began to threaten us all. So, we grabbed a quick group photo and scooted on down the road. Can’t wait until next year for the Fifth Annual 301 Brothers Polar Run.

History Of CBA/ABATE Of NC Pt. 2 Continued from issue #259 - February 2020 Over the years, other members tried to contest the law. In March, 1976, Wild Man Lovelace tried a new approach. This time, Wild Man had his helmet strapped to his leg rather than on his head. When he went to court, the prosecutor voided the ticket. He said the Assistant District Attorneys were too busy to fool with helmet law tickets.

This was the routine for some time in the 1970s, if you were willing to go to court, you could ride without a helmet. Later, the various District Attorneys informed CBA members that if they persisted in challenging the law, they would be prosecuted as habitual offenders.

In October 1975, North Carolina’s Senator Jesse Helms introduced Senate Bill 2293 to amend section 402 of Title 23 of Federal Code of Regulations relating to highway safety. The bill, known as “the Helms’ Angels Act,” specifically opposed federal requirements for mandatory helmet laws and other anti-motorcycle legislation. House Bill 3869 was also introduced to prevent the Department of Transportation from blackmailing states into helmet laws by threating to withhold highway funds.

In 1967, the Federal government passed legislation that required all states to enact specific laws in order to qualify for certain federal safety programs and highway construction funds. In part it required the mandatory wearing of approved

headgear for motorcyclists. Most of the 50 states were eager to comply in order to be eligible for the dole. Connecticut passed its helmet law in 1967. The federal blackmail worked, and by the 1975, almost all but three states had universal motorcycle helmet laws.

California was the most notable exception. A state-wide coalition of bikers lead by Easyriders magazine and the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club withstood the pressure until January 1985. When they implemented their first helmet law, it only applied to persons under 16 years of age.

A similar House Bill 3869 was also introduced to prevent the Department of Transportation from blackmailing states into helmet laws by threating to withhold highway funds.

Finally, in 1976, states successfully lobbied Congress to stop the Department of Transportation from assessing financial penalties on states without helmet laws. This did not require states to repeal their existing helmet laws. Having just passed helmet laws many legislatures were reluctant to revisit the issue despite public opinion.

To generate support for repeal in North Carolina, the CBA kicked out with a flurry of legislative visits and helmet protest runs. The CBA also intensified its fund-raising activities to pay for legal fees and lobbyist expenses. One of the most effective fund-raisers was the Bike Shows. Starting in 1974, the CBA held a Spring Bike Show.

The 1st protest run was announced at the CBA’s 3rd Annual Spring Bike Show. At that time the shows were held at the American Legion Post on Donald Ross Road in Charlotte. The protest was billed as the First Bicentennial Protest Run against mandatory helmet laws. Held on April 25, 1976, the run started on Golf Acres Drive in Charlotte and crossed Mecklenburg County under a heavy police escort.

The decision to ride in protest was not an inconsequential decision. Bikers in the South were second-class citizens. Most Harley riders were viewed by the public, and more importantly, by the authorities as dangerous, dirty, drug-dealing hippies. It was not uncommon for bikers to be pulled over and grilled by the police at the drop of a hat.

At the time, I was living off Nations Ford Road in Charlotte.

One day after a long week working as a welder, I decided to ride to the mountains for the weekend. So early Saturday morning, I loaded up my motorcycle and got ready to head west. As was normal in those days, I was wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans, boots, and a vest. I was also wearing a Ruger 22-caliber match pistol for target shooting and varmints.

over by the police. Within a couple of minutes almost a dozen police cruisers were parked along the road. For the next hour, I and my bike were carefully checked for contraband and drugs.

The pistol was taken from me and I was placed in handcuffs for “the protection of the officers.” The officers were trying to be intimidating, until they discovered my military ID and my military security clearance level. At that point, they became quite apologetic. In a refrain that I heard many times over the years, they told me I matched the description of a murderer they were looking for.

That was a common pattern in the early days. For me it culminated one Tuesday afternoon when I came home from work.

My landlord told me that some insurance salesmen had been by several time looking for me. I didn’t think anything about it at the time. The next day when I got home, the landlord told me that those salesmen had come back. Then a car pulled into the driveway and the landlord said “there they are now.”

The salesmen turned out to be Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents. They asked to look at my motorcycle; they thought it might be stolen. I was a little upset and let them know it. They just ignored me and checked the serial numbers and tags on the motorcycle and then left. Over the next week, I saw them observing me several times. The kicker came when they went into my work and questioned my boss and the other employees.

I had enough at that point and decided to bring things to a head. I rode downtown to the FBI office and asked to meet the agent in charge. When I identified myself, he opened a

drawer in his desk and pulled out a file about 1 ½ inches thick.

It seems they were keeping tabs on people and had retrieved my records, including the background check for my security clearance.

At the time, I was an Army officer and had just completed the Engineering Officers Basic Course and a Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Warfare school. The agent then told me that they had been checking me out and wanted to know if I would be interested in working as an undercover informant. I told him no thanks, that I didn’t know anybody that was doing anything he would be interested in. As we sometimes said then “I đi đi maued ‎(got lost!)”

The Annual Bike Shows and Swap Meets have been an important part of the Concerned Bikers Association life almost from the beginning. Each year the Charlotte chapter of the CBA held two 2-day bike shows & swap meets, one in the spring and one in the fall, at the Metrolina Fairgrounds in Charlotte. The events include Tattoo contest and Wet T-shirt contests. Other chapters and districts of the CBA also sponsor shows as a means of raising funds and promoting membership.

All of the events serve as a sort of “family reunion” for the members and their friends.

The events have changed greatly over the years. The first bike shows were very much local affairs during which used parts were sold or traded by local bikers. Held in small buildings, the shows were more about meeting other bikers and less about business. Hot dogs and soft drinks were the main stays at first.

History of CBA/ABATE of North Carolina - Pt. 2 Continued From Page #21 In March of 1976, the CBA’s Annual Spring Bike Show was moved to the American Legion Post on Donald Ross Road in Charlotte. The tattoo and wet t-shirt contests featured local members and friends at first. Over the years, they became much more organized and attracted contestants from around the country. Currently, the Swap Meets are held at the Rowan County Fairgrounds in Salisbury.

As mentioned earlier, the 1st Bicentennial Protest Run against mandatory helmet laws was staged on April 25, 1976.

The riders started from Golf Acres drive and rode across the county under police escort.

In May of 1976, the CBA held a well publicize statewide Helmet Protest and Blood Run in Raleigh. Several hundred people were in attendance. This was followed by a much larger protest in September of 1976 that went from the State Fairgrounds to the Capitol grounds. In this well publicized Protest, thousands of bikers flooded Raleigh.

The protest runs had the benefit of making the CBA’s position and membership known to the public and the politicians. Political candidates such as Jim Rowe, Craig Lawing, and Alan Jaffre began speaking at CBA meetings, seeking support. CBA member Chuck Major met with Jesse Helms about the “Helms Angels” Bill to remove the Department of Transportation’s ability to blackmail states into passing mandatory helmet laws.

During this same time, the CBA in Charlotte began lobbying for a Motorcycle Awareness Week. Following their success,

other chapters got proclamations from their cities. After a couple of years, the week as expanded to become Motorcycle Awareness Month and a proclamation made by the Governor of the state.

Over the following decade, CBA chapters and districts began sponsoring their own Bike Shows and Protest Runs. The biker calendar became quite crowded in North Carolina. On January 29, 1978, the 1st Easyrider/CBA Swap Meet was held at the Metrolina Fairgrounds.

In another milestone, a new motorcycle drivers’ license law became effective in January 1978. By this time, the CBA was active on the national front. Members were participating in meetings and protests across the nation. We started working with people like Wanda Hummel of ABATE of Indiana.

In much the same way Rick Nail guided the CBA in its early days, Wanda Hummel- Schultz, almost single handedly pulled together bikers in Indiana. Working constantly, she was the catalyst which made possible the organization they have today.

As a woman, she faced bikers who didn’t respect women, and who argued among themselves and settled things outside. She had death threats from the very people who she was trying to help.

With a gift for gab, she faced ridicule and cynicism. Their membership didn’t grow because bikers refused to join an organization led by a woman. With just over 350 members in the entire state, she engineered the repeal of their mandatory helmet law in 1976.

DOT Helmet Failure Rate Increases To 43 Percent By: Dustin Wheelen RideApart.com Motorcycle News You get an F in safety.

M

otorcycle helmet certifications can be mystifying for new

riders. From Europe’s ECE rating to Britain’s SHARP testing to independent Snell certifications, the standards and practices among the numerous designations lack consistency. On the other hand, one helmet certification consistently lacks the stringent performance testing found in other testing procedures—US DOT (FMVSS 218). In the past, independent tests have put on-shelf DOT helmet insufficiencies on full display. Now, data collected by the federal government reveals the unpredictable safety standards of DOT-stamped helmets.

Under contract by the Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), independent California- based Act Labs tested DOT helmets for labeling and performance. From 2014 to 2019, the firm tested 167 helmets with 105 (62.8 percent) failing the labeling portion and 72 (43.1 percent) helmets failing the performance trials.

The study’s findings are particularly disconcerting given DOT certification enforcement and post-marketing inspection. For those that don’t know, DOT compliance is required for a helmet to be sold in the US and the label implies that the product meets the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (DOT FMVSS 218). How-

ever, without a governing body to administer quality control before helmets hit retailers, meeting DOT standards is left up to the manufacturer.

Helmets that fail DOT testing incur fines or could be forced to recall the product. While it’s encouraging to hear that manufacturers face penalties for not meeting safety regulations, it does little for consumers that already purchased the faulty equipment. In the end, compliance-enforced recalls are rare, with only 12 helmet recalls (16.6 percent) since 2014.

Year-to-year comparisons also paint a bleak picture with 2014 and 2018 exceeding a 50-percent failure rate for performance at 52 percent and 60 percent, respectively. Looking at performance failures alone, the trend steadily declined over a four year period (2014-2017) with jumps in 2018 and 2019 returning the failure rate to previous norms.

In 2019, Act Labs tested brands such as Bell, Scorpion, Shoei, and HJC and you can look up specific makes, models, and year of testing at the Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance website. While the manufacturers listed above are reputable companies, overall findings suggest that consumers may want to seek out helmets with additional safety certifications. If there’s one thing this data demystifies for consumers, it’s that manufacturers adhere to DOT standards on a consistently inconsistent basis. Smokin’ Harley-Davidson Polar Bear Ride In Bike Show By: Lincoln Infield

T

he list of events quiets down a bit for the

cold weather months, but here in NC the weather rarely makes riding impossible.

The fine folks at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC know this and are always coming up with good times for motorcycle riders. On February 1st they hosted a Polar Bear Ride In Bike Show. It was actually a mild day, so I went out to make a few loops with the intention of making Smokin’ and the Bike Show my destination.

Now, I love my motorcycle, it’s no show bike, but that doesn’t keep me from entering it in the bike shows! Bike show entry was free that day and bike show parking was right in front of the door! I got all entered in the show and walked around the dealership for a while.

Smokin has a great selection of new and used bikes, parts and apparel and is just a good place to hang out for a bit. A couple really sweet bikes rolled in and took up spots in the bike show. I could tell right away my bike was eliminated from the running! No worries, I still had a great parking spot!

Bike Show judging was around 2pm and Smokin GM, Ray Perry, made short work of it. There were some real clear win-

ners on the lot! 1st place went to a super clean Black and Chrome 2014 Road King ridden in

Richard took home a laser etched wood plaque and $100 Smokin’ H-D Gift Card. Second place went to Tim Schuman who rode in on a 2019 Tri-Glide. His red and grey Tri-Glide was super clean and stood out in the crowd! Great color combo and looked extremely well kept!

Tim was also awarded a laser etched wood plaque.

After a few photos of the winners I was on the road again. Big thanks to Smokin’ HarleyDavidson for throwin’ out cool stuff to occupy us during the cool season. Dice Run For BJ Truesdale By: Wally Wersching n November 2019, Jesse (BJ) Truesdale was diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer and given from 6 months to one year to live. This was devastating news for him, his wife Angel, and their large family. #BJSTRONG was initiated on Facebook to help in their struggle - both financially and emotionally. Jennifer Prather, and David Basset have been there every step of the way helping BJ and his family any way they could.

I heard about the latest effort for BJ’s support in the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar events – a Dice Run on Saturday, January 18th, at Fat Daddy Baggers, 905 E Main St., Cherryville, NC. Fat Daddy’s Baggers is a relatively new shop – only about 6 months old - owned by Bobby and Dawn Horne, and Vernon and Julie Skidmore. The Horne’s are originally from Florida, and the Skidmore’s are from Crouse, NC. With the $20 registration fee, there would be three stops along the way: Johnny’s Mexican Bar & Grill in Lincolnton, NC: Mike D’s East End Sports Bar in Maiden, NC; and Quillies Bar in Lincolnton where there would be food provided.

There would be door prizes, 50/50 drawing, and t-shirts available. It sounded like a great event to support BJ. I watched the weather reports all week, and it didn’t look good. There were showers predicted for Saturday afternoon. I awoke on Saturday to see a very dreary morning. The sky was overcast, and there was a slight mist in the air when I walked the dog.

I left home about 11:00AM in order to be at Fat Daddy’s by registration time at noon –. It was chilly with temps in the mid 30’s, and it was still misting. I arrived at the event site at a little before noon and went inside to give a donation. I wasn’t going on the run because I had other things to do in the

afternoon.

Everybody was very friendly when I went to place a stack of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines on the counter. I was surprised to see that they already had three stacks of Full Throttle – current, and the two previous months. I learned that someone delivers the magazines to Fat Daddy’s regularly.

While walking around outside, I met members of the Iron Horse Rebels from nearby Vale, NC. They were also very friendly. I talked with Scott, the president, for a while. They must be very dedicated to BJ’s cause to come out, and ride in such inclement weather.

Between noon and 1:00PM, there was a constant influx of bikers arriving. Everyone was warmly greeted with handshakes or hugs. The weather wasn’t dampening their spirits. They all went inside to register for the run.

As it got close to 1:00PM, the bikers started to put on their riding gear, and go to their bikes. Before they started their bikes, they were all called together in the parking lot for a pre-ride prayer. After the prayer, they started their bikes, and let them run for a while to get them warmed up for the ride.

Some bikes were setting in the cold for a couple hours. After a few minutes of revving their bikes, they all took off heading to Johnny’s. Many of the bikers had their faces covered from the cold. The weather got worse during the afternoon. It started raining.

After they left, I headed home. I hope that BJ can miraculously be cured. He’s way too young for all this to happen, but it is heartwarming to see all the bikers come together to help.

Ballot Info 2020 By: Tyler Stiles, Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group question was raised at the recent CBA/ABATE of North Carolina state meeting concerning the upcoming elections. Who, I was asked, among the upcoming candidates is pro or anti-motorcycle? I spent some time thinking the question over, running through the various bills that we lobbied last session and recalling meetings that I had had with various representatives and senators. The conclusion that I came to was that out of all of the elected officials that I had met with, not one of them was strictly anti-motorcycle. That’s not to say that they are all 100% supportive of our aims and goals, in fact the same representative that carried our facemask bill in the house was one of the staunchest opponents of the hands-free bill. But I think that it is important to remember that we, as motorcyclists, are in a unique position to assert our rights to our elected representatives. In a day and age where seemingly every issue is an invitation to a knock-down, dragout, partisan mudslinging fight, motorcyclists’ rights can draw support from all across the political spectrum.

After reviewing my notes from meetings and thinking back on our most recent long session, I don’t think I’d label any politician on the ballot as anti-motorcycle. I would, however, like to point out some representatives that were especially willing to lend an ear and support us, and who in turn I believe that we should put our support behind. These are presented in no particular order, and this is by no means an exhaustive list of elected officials that are willing to support our legislative efforts.

In the House: Rep. Dana Bumgardner – Representative Bumgardner was responsible for carrying HB 257, the facemask bill, through to completion in the house. This bill created an exemption for motorcyclists from the existing mask law which makes it illegal to be on a public street or highway with one’s face covered. Motorcyclists are now able to legally wear cold weather gear, bandanas, etc. in order to protect their face and maintain their comfort.

Rep. John Torbett – Representative Torbett was responsible for introducing our grass clippings bill that would have made the blowing of grass clippings into a roadway an infrac-

tion punishable by fine. Grass clippings present a risk to motorcyclists, bicyclists, in some cases small cars, and cost urban districts a significant amount of money in cleaning drainage systems that become clogged by them. While this bill, unfortunately, did not advance last session, we thank him for his efforts and will continue to pursue this bill in the future.

Rep. John Autry – Representative Autry and I were introduced somewhat by mistake, as he is a bicyclist rather than a motorcyclist. Nonetheless, he was immediately eager to support our efforts on both the grass and mask bills. He has been an excellent resource in our continuing efforts in the general assembly.

Rep. Kyle Hall – Representative Hall has also been very receptive to our efforts and easily accessible to both our organization and his constituents. He has expressed a great deal of interest in the bills we’ve pushed for and has offered his support whenever possible. I look forward to working with him more in the future.

In the Senate: Sen. Ted Alexander – Senator Alexander bears special mention. As a freshman Senator, he was willing to carry multiple companion bills for us through the senate. He introduced a companion facemask and grass clippings bill. He has been an ally of CBA/ABATE and we look forward to his continued support in the Senate.

Sen. Terry Van Duyn – Senator Van Duyn has been a supporter of CBA/ABATE’s efforts in the senate for several years. She was a co-sponsor of the grass clippings bill along with Senator Alexander, lending it bi-partisan support (a huge benefit for a bill). She is always willing to meet and hear the concerns of her constituents, and I believe that she will continue to be an asset to CBA/ABATE in the future.

Sen. Natasha Marcus – Another freshman, Senator Marcus was very quick to offer her assistance with our efforts, going so far as to co-sponsor our mask bill in the Senate. Her support made the facemask bill another bi-partisan bill, which allowed for smooth travels through the senate and eventually to the Governor’s desk for signature. She has been willing to meet and listen with an objective ear to the concerns of CBA/ ABATE, and I believe that we will be able to count on her for continued support in the future.

Sen. Kevin Corbin – Senator Corbin has introduced the Hands-Free NC bill, which would be a tremendous step forward in improving the safety of our roads for all drivers, not just motorcyclists. He has also been receptive and appreciative of the support that he has received from CBA/ABATE of NC as a result of this bill.

TON UP-NC Ton Up-NC is a local tie into the Ton Up motorcycle culture. The Bull City Rumble is a world-renowned vintage motorcycle and scooter rally hosted by Ton Up NC annually on Labor Day in Durham, NC. AHDRA Back On Track In 2020

or all of you who have told me for years you wished there

were more professional sanctioned Harley-Davidson and American motorcycle drag races around here … Well 2020 is looking good for you. Your wish has been granted.

To answer the wishes of Harley Drags Fans and racers of American-made V-Twin motorcycles, the All Harley Drag Racing Association has been purchased by Pulse Marketing The Pennsylvania-based motorsports promotion company, run by veteran drag racer Bill Rowe Jr. and family starts their new season at Rockingham Dragway May 15-17.

Yes, your wish for a strong dose of nitromethane to clean winter out of your head will begin at ‘The Rock’ in May. Personally, I love the smell of race gas in the Extreme Classes.

Ten to twenty years ago, many of y’all attended AHDRA races all across the country. They held several close to the Carolinas. Lots of top level nitro-fueled race teams are based around here. Craig Tharpe ran the association from North Carolina.

AHDRA will run 14 classes from Trophy and ET up to roaring, flame throwing, Top Fuel machines. At their first race in Rockingham, they will raffle a 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide from Cox’s Double Eagle Harley-Davidson, Pinehurst, NC. “We want to thank Craig for trusting us to take the AHDRA over,” said Rowe Jr. “We want people to know we’re here and we’re looking forward to a May 2020 start to our season.”

The Rowe family has a lifetime of motorsports promotion.

“My dad, Bill Sr., was a promoter when I was a kid,” said Rowe, who’s been racing for over 40 years. Y’all have seen Bill ripping down The Rock and may have been there when he took the AMRA Eliminator championship from Donnie Huffman in 2017.

I have done some minor upgrades here and there but have never messed with the stock exhaust. I was curious to see what the Big City Thunder Monster Baffles could do for my bike. I met up with my buddy Rob Celendano from Big City Thunder at a top secret BCT testing site and he

installed the Thunder Monster Baffles in my bike. The installation process is as pain free as possible, once the 20 year old mufflers were removed, we were on our way. Check out the step by step instructions.

I noticed immediately that my exhaust sound was deeper, which is awesome, everyone wants immediate returns! The ride was NOT disappointing either! It was a beautiful day to ride, and my bike had some extra pep in the throttle!

My bike was no dog, but after the Big City Thunder Monster Baffle was installed it just wanted to get up and go! I was amazed at how such a simple looking, easy to install product had such an effect on the way my bike responded.

This baffle is an easy install that you can handle on your own with a few tools, or you can have your mechanic take care of it for you, but I can tell you now, you won’t be disappointed.

1.With the mufflers off, we held the Monster Baffle up to get an approximate location for the for the baffle.

2. Then we marked the head pipe for bolt ¼” hole, just in front witness marks from edge of the slip-on muffler.

3. After marking the pipe with a marker, use a punch to create an easy point of reference to drill from.

4. Drill 1/8” pilot hole before stepping up to a ¼” size bit.

5. After drilling smaller hole(s), I like to use a small “UNIBIT” drill bit to drill to the final ¼” size.

6. After drilling the final size (1/4”) thru hole, deburr the inside of the pipe, preferably with a round edge file.

7. After deburring the exhaust pipe, check that the baffle pushes into the pipe without resistance of any type.

8. Place a generous amount of High Heat thread lock compound on the bolt threads for the baffle.

9. After aligning the baffle threads with the thru-hole, thread ¼” bolt into baffle.

10. Using a 5/32” Allen socket, Tighten ¼” bolt to 75 in. lbs. with high heat thread lock compound

(Note bolt placement at lower part of pipe where bolt head is hidden, yet no shields had to be removed).

11. Use high heat Copper Anti-Seize Lubricant on inside of muffler pipe where it slides on to head pipe and then replace your muffler / pipes.

2 Wheel Society Billy Coyne Run

By Lincoln Infield anuary 18th was not the most beautiful day. Overcast skies and temps in the 30’s can sometimes take the spirit right out of a ride. That was not the case with the 2 Wheel Society Billy Coyne Run. When I rode on to the lot at The Harvest Church in Greensboro, there weren’t a lot of bikes there, yet. There was a lot of heart there, there was a lot of love there and it was evident in the way these guys and gals treated everyone there, me included. I was quickly greeted

by Alex Huckabee and some of the other guys that make up 2 wheel Society. You see, 2 Wheel Society is not a club, it is a non-profit organization that was started by a group of friends that wanted to bring the biker community together and make a positive change in our community. Alex says, “We wanted to be able to make our own riding gear, clothes, and merchandise to sell to raise money to be able to host rides and events to help support families in need, raise awareness, and support charities”.

This maiden ride for the Society was centered around Billy Coyne, Alex’s Uncle. “The Billy Coyne Run was something special, We met for lunch one day and Alex said, “Hey guys, I want to put together a ride. I don’t care how big it is, but I want to do it in 3 weeks” Alex’s uncle Billy had Down Syndrome and was fighting a battle with Alzheimer’s. Everyone was immediately “all in” and from that meeting at lunch, we made flyers, began posting on social media, had a meeting with a local company to have shirts and hoodies made for the ride. Alex went on to explain, “Billy was a Son, Brother, Uncle and gift from above… our Angel”. He has fought the good fight and is now in heaven with his Father. Billy had his priorities exactly right. He had a deep rooted love for the

Lord, his Family, Friends, Country and a strong admiration for Captain America and all things Marvel!

He was a Special Olympian, Archer, Body Builder, Bowling Champ, Puzzle Master, Word Search Wonder and Coloring Book aficionado but enjoyed serving as a Greeter and Usher at Harvest Church most of all. A graduate of the Charles D. Mciver School, Billy later worked at the ARC LifeSpan Workshop and volunteered at Harvest Church. Billy was an instant friend to everyone he met and had many ‘favorites’. His reach spans the globe and has touched many beyond our understanding. He was pure at heart with unspeakable joy. Unconditional love poured out of him and he judged no one. Billy was a man of few words but remained a faithful” Alex Explained.

Billy’s impact on those around him was evident. One of the suggestions to participants was to wear superhero themed clothes since Marvel and Captain America in particular was such a big thing for Billy. Folks were there with their superhero gear on, the event shirt was emblazoned with Captain America’s shield and there was even a captain America figure strapped to the back of one the bikes. The ride was set to take off at noon. Two weeks prior, the 2 Wheel Society crew scouted out what they thought would be a good ride for this event. “Being that we had so much of the Coyne family, and others coming to be there with us, we didn’t want the ride to be too long, so we kept the route to a 40 minute ride, basically making a big loop through the countryside, and ending back at Harvest.” Alex said.

After the event, I asked Alex how the event made him feel.

more was mind blowing. We were super proud of what we had done, there were laughs, tears, hugs, it was all around a great turnout.”

Unfortunately, Billy passed away shortly after this ride. Our most sincere condolences to the family and the whole 2 Wheel Society. There was memorial ride on a sunny day to celebrate his life. As for future plans for the 2 Wheel Society, Alex says, “We have big plans, we are currently working on officially becoming a non-profit organization, becoming vendors at rides and events all over. A Month Of Love At Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson

Bragg Harley-Davidson keeps the party going all month long. There was definitely a lot of love for riding in the air, whether your valentine is a Harley or rides a Harley, your gift could be found at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson.

The beginning of the month was meant for the love of football. There was a tailgate party free food and beer, the menu is always timely! There were lots of give-a-ways and prizes. All you had to do to enter was rock your favorite team jersey or sports team gear.

The next week’s party featured more love for the community with a free pancake breakfast. There was also lots of Girl Scouts and Cookies. Local motorcycle clubs are always ready to man the grill for the lunch crowd. The festivities are ongoing, the fun never ends and there are sales to boot! The leather apparel was discounted 25%. They told everyone, “She wants Leather… you’ll thank us later!”

The end of the month was about the merriment and love for Mardi Gras. Purple, green, and gold decked the halls for the jamboree. Everyone was in sync and ready to take part in food and beverages provided while wearing beads for the occasion.

Have a party of course, and support your local bikers, and clubs. Their efforts to support the community and get all the fun in, never ends. There’s always a party at Fort Bragg Harley!

Valentine’s Day At Baxter’s Tavern By: Rose and Lloyd riday Feb.14th, as always, was Valentine’s Day. The sign on the door at Baxter’s. Tavern at.536 Farragut St in Greensboro said it all. Bring your Honey or meet a Honey. The house was packed , with lots of drink specials and sweetheart specials.

The biggest special was the music of Soul Central and Jay Bird. these guys rocked the house.

The music was fascinating, especially since I had never seen a Blues or Soul band live.

When Jay Bird Sang “When a man’s loves a woman” the crowd went wild. Everyone enjoyed the night and Belinda and Denis really appreciated the support, and the kindness shown to the staff.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February Party

The 22nd Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party & Oyster Roast By: Lincoln Infield Photos By: Maggie, Rose, Doc, Lucas & Lincoln e call it the Fear of February party, cause the party is in February and the weather is also always on the edge of sucky. Don’t get me wrong, it’s generally rideable weather, but not desirable riding weather! This year was no different, I watched multiple weather apps for weeks on end while rubbing a lucky rabbit’s foot, with my fingers crossed and other good luck rituals. With less than a week to go, the rain forecast cleared for the weekend and left us with the coldest day of the week, topping out at 50˚. No worries; eating oysters in 80˚ weather is kinda sketchy anyway.

We move the party around each year to reach those who read Full Throttle across the Carolinas. This year’s party landed at the now world famous Hide-A-Way Tavern in Rockingham, NC. Owners Chris and Felicia Sachs have a helluva nice set up with a nice long bar, multiple pool tables, and a screened in porch. The jewel is the huge back yard that is fenced in and private; just right for a biker party. It was a great place to hold the 22nd Attempt Fear of February Party.

The party started at noon and folks were finding their way to the back yard. This year’s major sponsors: Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers and Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson were both set up and hanging out. Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson brought in two beautiful bikes and some other great FT. Bragg H-D gear for us to check out. Sean Clayton was representing The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers and brought with him the lovely Stephany to help hand out Karney Law Firm bags with their 2020 calendar and other goodies. booth and had their hands full selling event shirts and raffle tickets. The main feature of the Fear Of February party is the One Thousand pounds of FREE Oysters. This year’s cooking staff was made up of Wade, Doc and Lucas. They were pulling steamed oysters out of the cooker every 20 minutes or so for 5 hours! I heard Doc say, it takes 20 minutes to cook ‘em and about 5 minutes for them to get gone! In the end, guests consumed 12 boxes of delicious Texas oysters.

Fair Warning was the band for the day. This is the 3rd time that Fair Warning has played the FOF party and there is no secret to why they are a favorite all over the state. These guys killed it all day long. They had the crowd’s attention from the moment the first note hit the air. Not only were they on point as musicians, but they entertained the crowd in between songs and sets as well. If you ever see their name pop up near you,

Doc brought out his minibike this year to play the “Hitter in the Shitter”, the official bike game of the Fear Of February Party. This is part of the “what happens at FOF stays at FOF” deal, but I know some videos have already leaked out. The easy way to explain it is as a minibike jousting competition with pool noodles. It’s always a big hit and folks have a good time participating and laughing at those who do. My boy Angelo from the once world famous Tank Town Tavern got the day started with a few ringers and then Veronica, Scott and a dozen others tested their skills. When we started the games, Fair Warning was jamming out “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” by AC/D. It’s a fitting song for this game!

Fair Warning took a break at 3pm and it was time for the annual Fear of February “Chuggin’ Challenge”. My good buddy and Fear of February veteran, Hailey worked her buns off running around getting folks to sign up for the challenge.

Sometimes that can be a real job, but she kicks ass and got us several heats of men and women lined up. Five at a time, men and women stood in to test their swilling skills, with only the top 3 advancing to the next round. When the suds subsided, Jeremy “Dry As Hell” Lomogda of Deathwish Motor Culture took home the 2020 men’s title. It was no easy task as he had to out swill the likes of Big Block from Bull City Clothing, Justin “Bieber”, my man “Vansock”, and an entire heat consisting of all Deathwish Motor Culture crew members. CJ, who is a returning champion, took home her 3rd title in the women’s division. Although she got a bye to the second round

for being last year’s champion, it was no easy task to get past Laurie Elks who was putting ‘em back faster than some of the dudes! Jeremy and CJ were awarded a sweet skull mug and $40 Lowbrow Customs gift card each for coming out on top!

As mentioned, The Hide-A-Way Tavern has an awesome backyard built for killer parties. Right dab in the middle of the yard is a slab of concrete for a burnout pit. Now, I’m sure there has been some burnouts done there in the past, but it looked far too clean for a Full Throttle Magazine party. Again, they guys from Deathwish Motor Culture were down to help us out.

equally impressive Hevea brasiliensis fog. Roger Messer added some style and extra points by walking his back tire back and forth during his burnout that ended the exhibition.

Fair Warning took the stage back and rocked the crowd for 2 more hours. The oysters kept coming and everyone was having a helluva time. This year the fire pit and oyster tables were the most popular areas. We had the table full of oyster fixin’s and Doc even had his camp grill out with a spicy butter sauce going. As batch after batch of these perfectly steamed oysters came out, the resounding comment was on how tasty those little suckers were. If you weren’t in the mood for oysters, The Hide-A-Way Tavern had a grill set up and were serving hot dogs, hamburgers and fries for the land lubbers.

As the sun started to go down, it was time to pull some raffle

tickets. This year we had such awesome raffle prizes we decided to conduct a “Chinese raffle”. Ticket buyers could pick the raffle prize to which they wanted to devote their tickets.

Among the raffle prizes were a 55” smart TV, a (Valentine’s Day) Diamond Heart Pendant from Hayes Jewelers of Lexington, 12” custom mini ape handlebars from The Rebel Spirit, A Heavy Hitter canvas button down shirt from Deathwish Motor Culture, a leather vest from Viking Cycles or one of more than a dozen “swag bags” that were up for grabs. The “swag bags” were filled with hats, shirts, banners, signs, stickers, key chains, reserve fuel bottles, koozies and more from our awesome sponsors. This year’s swag sponsors consisted of The Rebel Spirit, Deathwish Motor Culture, Biker Trash Nation, Bull City Clothing, Lowbrow Customs, Deadbeat Customs and TC Bros. Choppers. I can’t thank those awesome companies enough for their support. One by one we called out raffle numbers and gave out prizes. It took us thirty some minutes to get done handing out prizes. Here’s how it went down: Kristin Shipwash with The Rebel Spirit devoted all their tickets to and won like 6 swag bags and let the others go to other party goers. Misty Dennis of Norwood, NC took home the Viking Cycles leather vest. Alison Mize of Sophia, NC won the Rebel Spirit custom handlebars. Georgetta Morgan of Rockingham, NC took home the Deathwish Motor Culture Heavy Hitter Canvas Shirt. Debbie Confer was the lucky lady who won the Diamond Heart Pendant from Hayes Jewelers. The 55” TV was the Grand Prize of the day and went home with Tommy Diggs of Wadesboro, NC. Now as much as I hate it, that was the end of the 22nd Attempt Fear Of February Party, but the legend lives on. As with any other year, we couldn’t have done it without a helluva lot of people who threw in to make sure we got it done. My oyster table guys: Wade, Lucas, Doc and Mike steamed oysters shucked and served ‘em all day long. Full Throttle Booth gals: Maggie, Lydia and Dawn have been a solid crew for years and sold out of shirts this year. Full Throttle Staff: “Anchor”, Scott, Rose, Lloyd, Amy and Paulette all came out and represented the magazine. Chris and Felicia of the Hide-A-Way Tavern were amazing hosts and their staff was awesome all day long. Naturally I have to thank Mr. & Mrs. Full Throttle Magazine, Mark and Molly Infield for letting me handle the FOF party this year. This party started way back in 1998 and

they made it into the “Almost At Tradition” that it is today. A second mention of my amazing wife Maggie is in order as she listened to me bitch about weather forecasts and other fears for 6 months leading up to the party. Unity In The Community; Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. day, in a quiet little community called Elizabethtown, there’s a gathering unlike any other. This tradition, started

by Fletcher “Big Show” Collins, also known to many as the Facebook Pastor, and the President of Dedicated Souls MC. He, along with members of his bike club, State Burners MC, Klean Kut Riders MC, Unusual Outcomes MC. Tru Visions MC, Sportsman MC, Soldiers United MC, Carolina Night Riders MC, River Riders Saddle Club, Happy Campers, Confederate Riders MC, and many other bike clubs and individuals in the area, it is called “Unity In The Community.”

Why is this different? For 9 years “Unity In The Community.” has promoted the very essence of Dr. Martin Luther ach year on the weekend before

King Jr’s dream. There is something special about this gathering, as you walk around and interact you quickly discover there’s representation of every walk of life; a blending of ethnic backgrounds. There is laughter and stories shared over great food or around a bonfire. You instantly sense a bond shared by everyone present. No harsh words spoken, no fights, just a genuine good time shared by all; the truest of fellowship not found just anywhere!

The event kickoff was Friday January 17th with a “Meet & Greet” bonfire at the campsite, set up behind Paul R. Brown.

We socialized and shared stories by a bonfire under the stars.

Laughter, tears, and even prayer for those requesting it. All this was the order of business that night. Saturday’s events began with a unity ride through Bladen County that ended back at the camp with a cookout, featuring some of the best food I have ever sampled. Sunday was the Unity Walk through Elizabethtown. Afterwards was prayer, worship, and God’s Word. Monday came with a chill in the air for the parade, but that didn’t stop these bikers at all. Over 100 bikes thundered down the main street of Elizabethtown to a crowd of bundled up onlookers. Then, it was back to the campsite. The kids in the bouncy castles, the DJ spinning music, and bikes covered the venue. To end the festivities, a Unity Fellowship “Feast” fit for a king!

Afterwards I pondered, while all the things going wrong in the world; this seemed so right! The theme was the same in everything; no color, gender, religious beliefs, or personal lifestyles came into question. You were there and that’s all that mattered. You were there! You felt like family and shared in something spectacular. Something the world needs to know more about, Unity! I am reminded of one of Dr. King’s ideals.

Let us all come together in unity to make this world a better place. The dream he had years ago still lives in events like this. Unity and equality were present in everything we did; and certainly, the message for the weekend.

Maybe you can attend next year and see what it’s all about?

I encourage each of you to mark your calendars for the event.

Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself. Maybe the world can be a better place. The past isn’t what defines us; let’s make our future!

Let Riders Speak!

Support H.R. 5234, MAC Reauthorization Act By: Tiffany Cipoletti, Director of Government Relations, Motorcycle Riders Foundation

W

e depend on motorcyclist advocates to advance our

2020 legislative priorities on Capitol Hill and we still have more work to do. With help, we can make sure that Congress takes steps to ensure that motorcyclist organizations regain membership seats on the Motorcyclist Advisory Council.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), along with our state motorcyclist rights organizations (SMROs) want to ensure the future Motorcyclist Advisory Council (MAC) is representative of the motorcycling community. We need help in urging members of Congress to cosponsor H.R. 5234, the Motorcyclist Advisory Council Reauthorization Act. The bipartisan legislation introduced by Congressmen Mike Gallagher (R-WI) along with Reps. Chris Pappas (D-NH), Harley Rouda (D-CA), and Troy Balderson (R-OH) will reauthorize the Motorcyclist Advisory Council (MAC) for six years and make sure national motorcycle organizations regain seats on the council.

In 2016, Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, or the FAST Act, was signed into law. This comprehensive legislation aims to upgrade our nation’s surface transportation infrastructure, enhance roadway safety, and address general highway, roadway and safety-related issues. In addition, the legislation re-established the Motorcyclist Advisory Council or “MAC.” The council represents the motorcycle community and have a direct line of communication with the Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Regrettably, all but one individual selected were to represent the technical aspects of the Council, including engineering, construction and traffic safety systems as well as roadway data. Only one seat out of ten was designated for a national motorcycle riders’ association and speak for the 8.5 million motorcyclists in the U.S. Let’s restore the MAC membership to be more representative of the motorcycling community across the country. Ask your representative to support H.R. 5234.
