12th Annual CBA/ABATE Chili Cook-Off By Wally Wersching he Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of Cleveland County held their 12th Annual Chili Cook-Off at the Shelby VFW Hall on March 19th, 2022. The CBA/ABATE is an organization that promotes the biker image while enlightening bikers of legislation that affects us all. ABATE was started in 1972 for bikers to organize in order to fight against federal and state restrictions on motorcycling. In North Carolina, the CBA and ABATE have merged into one organization for the betterment of the biker community. The Cleveland County CBA/ABATE’s president (Haley) is trying very hard to keep the biker community informed. It shows in her organizational skills, and enthusiasm. The cook-off started at noon. Five pounds of chili must be cooked on-site, and be ready for judging by 5:00PM. All the teams cooked their special recipe for chili in order to get their name engraved on the plaque with all the past winners. After the judging, the chili would be for sale for $5:00 a bowl with all the fixin’s. It was a beautiful afternoon so I rode “Miss Vickie” to the VFW Hall, and arrived at about 5:00PM. The parking lot in front was almost full of cars, trucks, and bikes. While parking “Miss Vickie” on the side of the building, I could smell the aroma of chili cooking in back. The breeze carried the deli-

cious smell around the corner of the building. As I walked around the back, I saw that Haley was just awarding the judges’ findings. This year’s competition was in memory of Amy “Shortie” Norris who was the chili champ in 2012 and 2013. I’m sure that the three judges had a very hard time determining the winner. The aroma in that parking area was intoxicating. It smelled so good, and I don’t even like chili. The judges determined that 1st place went to Todd Melton, 2nd place to Marcia Queen, and 3rd place to Big Country. All the teams brought their pots to the table, and everybody lined up to pay the $5.00 so they could eat the delicious chili that they had smelled all afternoon. I placed a stack of “Full Throttle” magazines on the table for all to share. The cook-off was another success, and I’ll definitely go back again next year. I will also keep an eye out for future CBA/ABATE events so I can continue to enjoy the company of my new friends. Check their Facebook page for more info.

50th Anniversary CBA Swap Meet & Bike Show By: Lincoln Infield

FIFTY YEARS...that’s a hell of long time for an annual event to go on. The event began as a bike show in 1972 and flourished at the Metrolina Fairgrounds in Charlotte before relocating to the Rowan County Fairgrounds in Salisbury, NC. Makes me wonder how many builds were started, finished, or sold off during the 50 years of swappin’ parts at the Charlotte CBA Swap Meet. I do know this, I see a ton of parts being hauled away each year and it’s awesome to see this old school bike event still providing a vital lifeline of vintage, hard to find and even modern motorcycle parts and accessories. The whole outside loop of the fairgrounds is full of parts vendors and there are folks of all ages pushing carts and hand carts snagging up the parts that they need, might need later, or just can’t leave behind. The parts swapping is only part of the event. I mean, it’s a big part of the event, but those who aren’t mid build or looking to start a new project still have plenty to keep them busy. Under the big top tent that sits at the top of the outside loop, the band is rockin for most of the day. The big top is also home to other events like the beard competition and the everpopular wet t-shirt contest. Of course, these two events have totally different competitors. The beard competitors just stand there and look grisly for awhile, and they are judged for their beard prowess. The ladies have to work a little harder, but are rewarded with a fist full of cash. Lloyd Issac, past president of the Charlotte CBA, has the terribly hard job of Emceeing the wet t-shirt contest, but current president Mike Wiggins has the honor of wetting the ladies down. Both are skilled jobs and these men are at the top of their game. This is the part of the day where the vending field empties ‘cause everyone is headed to the tent to cheer own their favorite fulsome friends.

While you are at the swap meet, you have to get a pork chop sandwich, seriously. I take mine all the way...and they put everything and the kitchen sink on there. It’s messy, but delicious, so you gotta find a place to sit down and have some napkins for your beard. The swap meet is a real biker family reunion as well, for those of us who have been in attendance for a number of years, it’s a great time to catch up with folks you haven’t seen since last year. Near the middle of the day the Mechanized Calvary fires off multiple volleys from three Civil War era cannons directly after swap meet coordinator, Rick Nail, reads off names of our fallen brothers and sisters. The cannon fire is awesome, I swear you can feel it in your soul when they fire off. The cannons are then moved off to the side to make way for the downhill Barbie car racing. This is a newer event for the CBA Swap Meet. They have a car hauler trailer modified to be a launching area for the downhill racing, and I’m not gonna lie, it’s halfway terrifying. Rubbing is racing and that is the name of the game as you head down the ramp trying to pilot your Barbie car to victory. Heated rivalries were formed last year between myself and McGrath Motorcycle Lawyer, Tyler Stiles. Last year he edged me out for victory, but was unable to attend this year. Naturally I took a solo victory lap and counted it as a victory for Team Full Throttle. South Main Customs puts together a great downhill racer and each year SMC mechanic Mike Pousada races into victory lane on his passes as well. It’s a real hoot to race or watch. If you want to get in on the action you can bring your own Barbie car or race in one of the loner cars. The Terry Brown Memorial Bike Show is a two-day affair inside the “bike show building” that holds a few key vendors, a wet bar and a couple dozen gorgeous bikes. This year, the Antique class was impressive and had to be the biggest class. Everything from Knuckles, Pan’s and Shovels to a sweet

Honda 350, were lined up and totally drool worthy. There were some pretty sweet customs sitting around too. For sure, that building was full of eye candy. The bike show is judged, but people’s choice awards carry cash rewards! It takes two days to count the votes and on Sunday afternoon the trophies and cash are doled out and that finalizes the event and the after party begins. ARE bikers. If you’re reading this magazine, your mom did a pretty good job with you, I mean, hey, you can read, right?! My bet is that you didn’t fully realize how much of a bad ass your mom is until much later in life. Maybe it took watching your mom swing her leg over a motorcycle and ride off into the sunset with a dozen other bikers for you to fully realize your mom wasn’t just someone who refilled your bowl of goldfish, helped you blow your nose and made you brush your teeth each day. Biker moms do all that mom stuff, plus lead pretty awesome personal lives collecting miles on their bikes and partying it up at events and rallies. Moms are amazing humans and May is the month that we celebrate them for one whole day, Mother’s Day. So as a salute to biker moms, we interviewed three local biker moms to talk to them about riding motorcycles and Mother’s Day. First up is Shannon Rights, you may know her as the NC coordinator for Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, or as the Pres of the Chrome Angels RC Sacred Sinners Chapter, but she’s also a badass biker mom of three kids and grandmother of three! Shannon rides a Harley Street, her first Harley and admittedly her favorite bike. She also acquired a Suzuki Bandit six months ago and is enjoying riding a street bike again. Shannon says, “When I’m riding my bike, it’s indescribable, it’s the best thing in the world. You get to commune with nature and God, get your thoughts in the right place, relax and just enjoy everything that you get to see”. Kristin Shipwash is the mother of two young girls and Owner / Co-Founder of The Rebel Spirit in Thomasville, NC. Kristin has to split time with her three bikes. Her “go to” bike is a 2012 Honda Fury, but also enjoys taking her 1979 HD FLH out for a spin when she’s not showing off “Boogie Nights” the 1972 Honda CB750 Chopper. Kristin was hesitant about leaving the back seat to pilot her own motorcycle but says, “Actually finally doing it, it feels like nothing else. You can’t compare it to anything else. It’s very empowering to be a woman on a motorcycle”. I couldn’t very well do an article on Mother’s Day without including my very own mother, Molly Infield. Obviously, she’s a true badass for mothering my two siblings and myself. She also claims 3 grandchildren. Molly is the Executive Editor of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and rides a 1999 Harley-Davidson RoadKing that she affectionately calls her “Road Queen”. Molly says, “Motorcycling to me is absolute freedom. Freedom of the road, freedom to have fun and just freedom for everything”. These three biker moms have all logged a ton of miles and have earned a saddlebag full of cool biker stories. 2019 ride to Florida for her annual anniversary trip with her husband, Zach. It was set to be the longest one day ride that she had taken in the 5 years she’d been on two wheels. She laughed a bit when she narrated her ride in which she was “all good and ready to accomplish the day”, but her husband, Zach was the one battling road gremlins and being uncomfortable. “It was just awesome to accomplish that in one day, and me be the one who was totally cool with it.” Kristin concluded. Shannon spoke about a memory she had riding with her brother, Sonny, on the back of his Harley Ultra while she was 8 months pregnant. “So here I am, 8 months pregnant, full of baby and I’m riding with my big brother. That was a great memory” She said. Shannon also threw out a memory of riding through the mountains of West Virginia in the rain with some of her Chrome Angel sisters on the way to Chilicothe, OH where she was given her patch by the National Founder of the Chrome Angels. “Those (conditions) make for a memorable bonding experience”, Shannon explained. Molly had a few riding experiences to talk about as well, including riding to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s 100th Anniversary Celebration. “It was a thrill to go to Milwaukee and as you were pulling into town, there was people on the over passes and they were clapping. They made everyone feel welcome, it was really a lot of fun.” She also recalled a “little trip” on the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, to the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA. “It’s always a good time on your motorcycle” she concluded. As far as family goes, all three of these moms have ridden

with their children. Whether their kids were on their own 2 wheels or riding with them, it seems the tradition is being passed on. “It was quite a thrill” Molly said about riding with her kids. All three of us kids rode at one point in time and although I don’t think we ever all rode together, we all put in a few miles with mom. Shannon said “For me it’s amazing to be able to do that. But for them, they are a little bit nervous”. Although Shannon has completed several advanced riding courses, she and her kids apparently have different riding styles and they worry about her. “I’ll go like a crazy person and they are trying to keep up, It makes them nervous sometimes” she said. Kristin’s daughters are two young to ride their own yet but she is bringing them up right. “I think having a motorcycle business and riding as often as we do has gotten them use to it being normal”. Kristen also mentioned that they have a mini chopper in the works for her oldest daughter who also rides on the back or in the side car with her and Zach on the toy runs. Her youngest daughter is an bike event veteran and is already riding her own 4 wheeler at 10 months. When it comes to Mother’s Day, Kristin knows that it is the day to celebrate “the one who did all the hard work”, and hey, why would we Dads argue with that? At least not on Mother’s Day. “Moms are the go to it seems like, especially for my girls”. She says. Mother’s Day makes Molly recall all the special gifts that her kids gave her over the years. “Mother’s Day has always been a special day for me in the fact that the things I get out are the things that my children did for me when they were young.” “It helps me remember how special it is to be a mother”. Shannon says Mother’s Day is “The chance to come together as a family to honor the Mama’s for all they do for us they do for us throughout the year. It hits a little different once you’ve lost your Mama.” When it comes to advice for other mother’s who may be thinking of riding, Shannon offers this advice, “Whether you’re a mother or not, if you are thinking about riding your own, do it. It will change your life, it’s the best thing in the world”. And by that, I’m sure she means, it’s the best thing in the world, after your kids. Right?! Memorial Day May is the unofficial beginning of summer, and it is certainly a time when even fair weather riders come back out on their bikes. Benefit rides abound along with bike nights and special events at our favorite local bike dealerships. As I am putting these words to paper, I am happy to report the yellow pollen has been reduced from a full-on assault to a minor skirmish. May is also a very special month as this is when we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to provide the freedoms we enjoy every day. It is important to not be confused about this special holiday. We always love and respect our veterans and we have Veteran’s Day in November to honor all who have served. Memorial Day is dedicated to those who have lost their lives in service to our nation. We grow complacent in appreciating our freedoms and realizing many in the world want to take away our freedoms. Citizens in Ukraine are demonstrating the true cost of freedom. Because of our freedom, I am able to write, and you are free to read this article complete with biblical quotes and Christian values. By God’s grace and the sacrifice our military this is possible without fear of reprisals for either myself or the publisher. now live in the good ole USA. My personal favorite Memorial Day scripture is John 15:13: Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. What is this really talking about? Self-sacrifice or placing the needs of others above our own is a characteristic of true Christians. Matthew 22:37-39: Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” I have never met more unselfish people than bikers. The willingness to sacrifice to provide help to those in need with illness, children, the less fortunate and not only at Christmas but year round. The world needs more people to show the love of Jesus every day to everyone, not just those we like or are like us. This Memorial Day I encourage you to participate in one of the many rides or visit a veteran’s cemetery to pay respects and honor to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice along with their loved ones. Bragg Harley-Davidson is certainly celebrating the riding weather that we are all enjoying! The months of spring are bringing many opportunities for motorcycle fun and you can find them all at Fort Bragg HarleyDavidson. Nowadays, you can always catch a local chapter on the grill! The community supports local clubs and organizations, they always add to the hometown family atmosphere. April was full of many festivities including several Easter celebrations. Easter eggs and candy were all over the place along with some awesome smiles from the kids who received them, and the bikers that handed them out! Friday, if the weather cooperates, a group of Motorcycle enthusiasts get together for breakfast or lunch and selects a destination. This ride takes them to Georgia and North Carolina as well as South Carolina. There are usually 8 to 12 riders that show up for the ride. The route is almost always into the mountains which are very scenic and cooler for the summer rides. There are around 35 possible riders in the group, however I’ve never seen all of them at one time. There is something for everyone, flat straight roads or curvy mountain roads or a combination of all sorts. The latest ride was to Tryon, NC lmost every

to the Side Street Pub for Lunch. Our route took us through a few Pickens, SC County roads while heading to Marietta, SC to connect with US276. We then took a couple state routes, 414 and 14, before connecting with US176 to make our way into Tryon, NC. Upon arrival we had plenty of bike parking in their large, paved lot. We filled a couple large booths and sampled some of their delicious Italian offerings, from pasta de fagioli to fettuccine and pizza. After stuffing ourselves, we came back on the always spectacular Highway 11 with mountain views before jumping back on to some county roads to get home. It was a great spring day for a ride. I’m looking forward to many more.

Rest In Peace Dale Walksler By: Anchor

Saturday, we all came together and showed our love and support for a celebration of life of Dale Walksler. When I first arrived at Dale’s Wheels Through Time to see the memorial and talk to the people that knew him best, I noticed a basic theme of how everybody spoke about him. It was admiration, of friendship and of being a great family member! Most of all, he was known worldwide as a man of antique motorcycles. I got to speak with people that knew Dale in high school and that watched Matt and Aaron grow up and saw how Dale progressed through the years. Personally, I only got to know Dale for about 6 to 7 years, so when I heard the different speakers talk about how they met Dale or how he found them, I realized my story was very similar to most of them. How I met the legendary Dale was walking up to deliver magazines and he was sitting on the bench. He asked me if I worked for Full Throttle because he saw my shirt and I said yes sir. He introduced himself and asked me if I had ever been in Inside the museum. I said no, I’ve only dropped off books over the years. He took me inside and just started showing me all sorts of motorcycles that ran and he was very proud of showing them off. My story and what I have to offer is very little compared to the wonderful things that his family members were saying about him, how his Pastor was talking of him, and how board members and longtime volunteer/employees spoke so highly of Dale! Before the celebration of life took place quite a few people noticed that the museum was open as they drove by so they pulled in, not realizing what was actually taking place. Once they found out, they didn’t jump back on their bikes or in their cars and leave, they stuck around to find out why that museum is in Maggie Valley. Dale decided to move the museum from Vermont to Maggie Valley because it was a central hub point for people from miles around to come visit and be a part of this large dream. I found out that it took a very large ordeal of help and tractor trailer trucks to move just what he had in Vermont to Magn this beautiful

gie Valley. It was a major undertaking and once he started to build, he put the museum on the forefront of being done. He didn’t rebuild the cabin behind the museum until he pretty much had everything done that he wanted in the museum. Dale proved that a man that has a dream can teach that dream to others, including his own family, and continue a legacy that will be here for many generations to come. Dale’s legacy will continue to grow and prosper and feature new motorcycles to the museum, and possibly some old cars. You can tell from some of the photos taken one of the newest editions to the Wheels Through Time family is the Harley-Davidson tractor trailer built from a motorcycle. If you have the opportunity, to go to Facebook and find Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum, like it, and watch what’s going on now. Or better yet, plan a trip to Maggie and watch Matt his team and you could see all the cool things that Dale wanted to do in the museum. There are and will be new and cool things that are happening at this museum that Matt’s father built. Dale will be missed, but his legacy goes on and it will for many generations. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine to list all of the charities that Carolina Bikers are involved in. Bikers have big hearts and are willing to help each other and the public. Come riding season, you can make one poker run in the morning and end up at another that afternoon. Trying to support everyone. Well, some Bikers in the Hickory, NC, area got to thinking about how they could promote and support each others’ charities and rides. I was glad to see the flyer for Helping Us Help Ride-N-Rally For Our Causes. It was clubs and friends who I’ve known for many years. The Rolling Saints RC was founded with the goal of helping their community. The ManiaX RC supports several great local causes during the year. One of the biggest local charity events, the Bronson Run, is put on by the Hickory Riding Club. We do things all year to raise money for that ride and party. The Wizard Saloon is Hickory’s oldest real biker bar. Mike Dyson has for decades put on the local toy run and been involved in many other charities. Angel, his daughter, is taking on more responsibilities with the bar and charities. Soon as I saw the flyer, it looked like Ivan and Homie were planning a cool event for the second Saturday in April. This is something a few of us have talked about doing. I love the idea of an early Spring ride and rally to promote the local biker charity events. Hand out flyers, sell drawing tickets, promote your events and club. Ivan West and Jeff Coffey from The Rolling Saints RC explained how the H.U.H. Ride came about. “The H.U.H. ride was an idea from one of our members Bill Padgett who wanted to help out all the charities he always supported. He saw we all had some lower ride attendance the past few years due to Covid. So Bill approached Rolling Saints RC, Maniax RC, Hickory Riding Club and the Wizard Saloon for all of us to do a ride and rally to help get a jump start for our main charities.” t would take a full issue of

The H.U.H. ride was a great success and bringing these four groups together to help each other and our communities was one of the best events I have been to. All proceeds the Rolling Saints RC received on this ride is going to help get a jump start on our Hearts and Hope Ride that is coming up this June 18th.” The ride started at John’s Tavern down by the river. John’s is the oldest bar in town. Catawba County has been a party place since pioneer days. There are bars at many of the roads crossing the county line. Folks made a quick stop at the local Harley Shop, Blue Ride H-D. Then they rode over to the Rolling Saints clubhouse. Next stop was the ManiaX RC clubhouse. They have a well known place, The Big V. With perfect riding and partying weather, the stop at the Wizard was outside. Sit and chill before heading over to the Hickory Riding Club. I love their clubhouse. It looks like you are riding into a 1970 Peter Fonda Grade B Biker Flick. Make your last dice roll and turn in your hand. Say hey to Gonzo. At the Hickory Riding Club property there is plenty of room for a trailer band stage, beer tent, club tents and vendors. They even allowed camping for folks who came Friday or weren’t going home until Sunday. Watch out for that Big Tom Turkey. He is chasing all the hens in those woods and is a fighter. I was sittin’ and chillin’ in the Wizard Saloon booth when Angel rode in with a big smile. I think that smile, and all the others, reflected how great the day was going. Nice weather, good friends, cool ride and now it was time to party. Doesn’t Madder started cranking up the tunes. Dancing and singing was next on the agenda for some folks. “This was a great ride for a great cause,” Angel said. “We look forward to doing this annually. This could become the biggest event in Catawba county.” James Cope, local Conover guy, had the High Roll. Gwen and Scott Hargett, Connelly Springs, had the low roll. I don’t remember who won the 50/50 or got the coolest door prizes. Ivan West, one of the organizers, took the mike and auctioned off a table of cool donated things. I was relaxing by the beer booth. Making sure not to wave at folks and Ivan think I was bidding. It was great to see some of the Old Hickory Bikers out on a Saturday afternoon. Several of the other local clubs were there. Street Survivors are some guys I’ve know a while and fixing to have their anniversary party soon. Gonzo, Hickory RC president, summed the day up well. “Thanks to all the folks who came out. The ride and rally turned out great. It’s less work for all of us when we work together. This was a great idea. Glad that the Hickory Riding Club was a part of it. HARLOTTE, NC – On Saturday April 2nd 2022, the Infidels Motorcycle Club held their First Annual Infidels Poker Run to raise money for The Independence Fund, a national non-profit for Veterans and their families headquartered in Charlotte, NC. The Poker Run made stops at three local bars and one motorcycle dealership. This event was open to the public and had a $1,000 grand prize for best hand and $200 prize for worst hand. “This poker run was a chance for members of the Charlotte chapter of the Infidels MC, to engage with the local community in supporting the needs of our nation’s wounded, ill, and injured Veterans. In doing so we were able to donate the proceeds totaling $5,000 from our inaugural Poker Run to The Independence Fund, a national non-profit for Veterans

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Officer Mia Goodwin Memorial Ride

Mecklenburg Police Officer Mia Goodwin lost her life in the line of duty on December 22, 2021, when a tractor trailer crashed into two CMPD cruisers. Officer Goodwin was a mother of three and was fresh back to work from Maternity leave. Not too long after the tragedy, local biker and event coordinator Crystal Ashe was contacted by a member of the motor patrol to organize a memorial event for Officer Goodwin. It was too close to Christmas and the pain too fresh to organize an event right away, so plans were laid to have the memorial ride on April 9th, the Saturday prior to what would have been her 34th birthday, April 15th. A ton of planning went in to pulling off this meaningful memorial ride. The coordination efforts that Crystal and her team put together was pretty amazing. The ride started and harlotte

ended at the Oasis Shriners Club in Charlotte. Event staff was able to direct traffic and keep the staging running smoothly. The Shrine Club was large enough to handle parking for the 181 bikes, trikes, spiders and slingshots, 20 cars, 40 jeeps, 27 trucks and 14 escorting officers’ vehicles. It may have not been the turnout that was expected, but was a great turnout for a chilly, overcast, 50 degree day with a steady breeze. The pre-ride meeting was full of emotion. Crystal Ashe called the riders together to go over some ride instructions and to talk about the purpose of the day. She also introduced Mia’s father, Antonio Figueroa, who came into town from New Jersey to be part of the memorial ride. Mr. Figueroa mustered the strength to address the crowd. He thanked the crowd as he choked back tears, it was tough. Crystal also read a moving poem that was written about the Officer Goodwin. Mecklenburg County Sheriff, Garry McFadden was also on hand talk about what this day meant to him and offered up a prayer before we rode. Naturally, the entire ride was escorted and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office had the parade route sewed up. The lead vehicle was flying two “Thin Blue Line” American Flags and the lead bike, along with other bikes, was flying Old Glory. The line of bikes was a beautiful site. The ride lasted close to an hour and went by the bridge where Officer Goodwin lost her life and ended back at the Shrine Club. Once all the vehicles were parked back at the Shrine Club, the day’s festivities went on. The chow line formed for the BBQ trays that were waiting on us. There was a DJ spinning tunes while we waited and a silent auction that stretched the length of the room. Event staff was circulating the room selling tickets for a 50/50 that

The final tally was $12,750 raised for Mia’s Children. It was a great tribute and showing of love to Mia, her family and law enforcement. My hat is off to Christal Ashe and her other half Dennis Koch who really put their heart and soul in to showing the appropriate respect to this fallen officer. Her team of volunteers and sponsors deserve a pat on the back as well. Officer Mia Goodwin may have fallen, but because of Crystal and all the supporters at this event, she will not be forgotten.

Uptown Lexington Kicks Off Bike Night Season! By: Lincoln Infield

Lexington Bike Night at Bull City Ciderworks started off with a bang. Not sure if it was a bang from the drummer in the band, from the pipes on one of the hundred plus bikes in attendance or from tires blowing in The Rebel Spirit Burnout Pit. Either way, it was a killer time. It was only 60 degrees at dusk and the breeze was a blowing, but that didn’t stop the hoard of bikers from enjoying the first Uptown Bike Night of the year. I rolled in around 6pm and alley and parking lot of the Ciderworks was PACKED with motorcycles. I dipped into the parking lot and caught a space beside The Rebel Spirit’s booth and the burnout pit. Killing Fiction was plugged in and rocking the stage, the food trucks were slinging food as fast as they could and folks were partying down. Bull City Ciderworks has a great industrial gasoline alley vibe going on and some really killer ciders on tap. They were slinging those ciders from the bar and an outptown

side tap with a steady line all night. Killing Fiction was up on the balcony by the bar doors ripping some great tunes. These guys, and a gal, really wail. Seven o’clock they took a break and Bike Night Coordinator Jack Waters took the stage to make some announcements. He was making sure everyone knew that Pandemonium Performance Custom Cycles was giving away $100 for the best bike on the lot and that The Rebel Spirit burn out contest was coming up! Zach and Kristin Shipwash had brought their mobile burnout pit along with their custom handlebars, motorcycle accessories and TRS Swag. The first contestant was Shannon Rose on his Sportster, Jacquelyn. Shannon burned that tire for over 4 minutes making his ground pounder exhaust cherry red and sending up smoke signals that I’m sure Greta Thornburg could see. There was no reason for anyone to challenge that performance and Shannon was awarded the sweet TRS custom trophy for his effort. Killing Fiction took back the stage till after 8pm when Jack reclaimed the mic for more announcements. Next, Tyler Styles from Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group stepped into the lime light to give away some tickets to the upcoming June Jam event on June 10-12th at the Rowan County Fair Grounds. The 50/50 winner was also announced and the cash was donated back to Davidson County Cancer Services who was the beneficiary of the event. The last big event of the night was the best bike on the lot competition. Killing Fiction went back to rocking and some other folks took their turn in the TRS burnout pit. It was awesome with tires smoking and Killing Fiction ripping Metallica in the background. 4th Annual Freedom Biker Church Bike Blessing By: Bill Gallaway

March 26 was the 4th Annual Bike Blessing sponsored by Freedom Biker Church of the Foothills in Pickens County South Carolina. The day was a semi cool 60 degrees and sunny and windy. I thought the weather was fantastic for the event. And so did around 100 others. There was music, food, vendors and fellowship. You could ride, visit with others, just hang or listen to the live music. I enjoyed the music and the pulled pork sandwiches that were delicious. I always run into some friends and acquaintances at these events and this one was no different. Doesn’t matter if you haven’t seen your friends for two years it’s like you just saw them last week. That’s true friendship. Some friends I first met around 8 years ago; I think. Time has gone so fast I can’t remember how many years to be exact. I do know however that I have been blessed over the years and my faith has provided me with a bountiful life. If you experienced a Bike Blessing be sure to pass it on. 1st Annual Skeeter Memorial Ride By: Becca- Bonez’s Wife

2 wheels tragedy can strike. Unfortunately, Kyle “Skeeter” Blackwell of Steel Rain MC lost his life in a motorcycle crash April 7th,2021. A day that rocked the lives of so many in the motorcycle community. Kyle was headed to work early that morning when he was hit by an SUV, operated by an impaired driver. At just 30 years old, Kyle died at the scene. Skeeter was an amazing young man that had a heart of gold and a goofy grin that was incredibly infectious. He loved to ride motorcycles, play guitar, sing, dance, drink PBR and hang out with his family, club, and friends. Skeeter would give you the shirt off his own back literally. If he could be there for you in any capacity, he would and whole heartedly. There were so many lives affected losing such a rare and precious soul from this world. One of the many qualities Skeeter possessed was his love. He loved his son Chase and all Chase’s siblings. Christian Hughes, Cloie Hughes, Cayleigh Hughes, and Hazel Hughes were all invited into Skeeter’s life and love without question. Chase’s mom, April, and her husband, Ronald (Doodle) were all friends and shared many memories and laughs with all the kids. Skeeter was the Road Captain for the Winston-Salem Chapter of Steel Rain Motorcycle Club (SRMC). In honor of his memory, Skeeter’s brothers: T-Rex (President), Bonez (Vice President), Ice (Secretary), Kixx (treasurer), Sandman (Sargent at Arms), Bear (Lieutenant), and their families host an annual fundraiser in April every year, for Chase Hughes’ college fund. Chase is 10 years old, but shows so many of his dad’s amazing qualities already. This year at Chase’s birthday party we all got to see Skeeter’s goofy and infectious grin again. It was plastered on the face of that 10-year-old little boy when his, uncles - as Chase affectionately calls them rolled in on their motorcycles and celebrated with him. ach of us knows when riding

T-rex from SRMC shares, “I was most impacted by how Skeeter was always genuine in his love for his brothers. He respected everyone and truly treated us all like family. He had a habit of lifting us up when we had a bad day. It was natural for him. His smile was contagious. He would always hug me and tell me he loved me.” Bear from SRMC shares, “ What can I say about Skeeter. He would give you the shirt off his back if you asked for it. The way he would answer the phone “well hey buddy” will never get out of my head. He would put you in a good mood even if you wasn’t. He was there for anyone especially the kids. I remember when Able didn’t want to walk across the rocks after a long night at a bonfire because his feet hurt. So here Skeeter comes saying come here buddy, uncle Skeeter’s got you. He was all in all one hell of a good guy. Before he passed, he put his arm around me and said to me ‘stick with me bubba I got your back’. Now he looks down on me and all the one’s he loved and will have our backs forever. You can’t have Steel without the Rain brother, give em hell until we get there my friend. Love you bubba. P.S. my pipes are still louder.” Bonez from SRMC shares, “Skeeter and I were friends, well before we became brothers. My best memory of Skeeter is breaking off from the group and we were riding through the countryside. We ended up getting lost, but just kept riding. Eventually we stopped and were trying to decide where to go. Skeeter said ‘hell, lets go left’. We just rode. The rain started pouring on us, but we didn’t care. We eventually came out somewhere in Winston, headed to the closest

bar, had a drink and just talked. Next, we headed to Double D’s Burnout Saloon and hid from the rain for a bit. Once the rain broke, we headed to my house, parked our bikes in my garage, and then had a shot. Skeeter flashed his goofy grin and said ‘damn good ride brother’. He was real. We both could find peace in just a ride. It didn’t matter when or where we were going.” Kyle “Skeeter” Blackwell, you are loved and you are missed by so many. Each of us were lucky to have a place in your life and are better for it. Thank you for your love, kindness, loyalty, and happy soul. The End Of An Era By: Bill Gallaway his past month marks the end of

an era. The Star Touring and Riding organization, a fun, family oriented independent motorcycle association, closed their doors. The Corporation has filed bankruptcy on 3/31/22. This occurred due to multiple reasons. Declining membership, Covid 19 restrictions, lack of support from Yamaha, and no new motorcycles like in the past for cruising. The founders Alan and Ginger Cease could not continue to operate the organization operating at a financial loss. Last year, Star Days in Las Vegas as the last opportunity for all Chapters from around the world to attend this international event. Over the years, the annual Star Days Conference was a chance to come together for camaraderie, riding, family fun and a chance to meet new friends and visit with old ones. This organization helped make lifelong friendships. Everyone met for the same reason – ride safely and have fun doing it. While I was a member for 15 years, I made many friends in the local Greenville, SC Chapter as well as the other SC Chapters and even a few from North Carolina and Michigan. During Star Days, there were always theme rides, for instance, a hero’s ride in honor of all those who watch over us, i.e., Police, Fire, First Responders along with the theme rides we rode to collection sites where we would distribute food and household supplies to needy families. Our Star Family foundation was set up to help our members when they fell on hard times and our Feed the Children Annual Food Drive provided food for needy children. The name of the organization was called Star after the Yamaha cruise line of motorcycles and while most riders rode Yamahas, it wasn’t enforced unless you held an officer position in your local Chapter where it was expected.

During the past 15 years I have ridden Yamahas, Honda, Victory and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. We always had a vision statement which was “We Are Star”. I guess for now we will say “We Were Star”. It was a great organization to have been involved in and still have the memories. There are many members that are interested in keeping the organization active at the local level and I’m sure we will see more information as the riding season is upon us.

Mikes 5th Annual Cowboy Chili Challenge Story and photos by Alan Dockery he first Saturday of spring was bright and sunny with Carolina Blue skies at Sons of the South Saloon, Longview, NC, for Mike’s 5th Annual Cowboy Chili Challenge. But the front that pushed out the clouds gave us a steady wind all day. Bikers just laughed about it blowing everything off the tables and kept on cooking. It was a great day to ride over to the bar, hang out and talk with old friends and down bowls of chili with cold beverages. My favorite bike to rumble into Sons of the South that day was Flygirl’s Dad’s Old Blue Evo. Mike owns the oldest real biker bar in Hickory, The Wizard Saloon, and told me he wanted to do something like this at SOS for years. He throws cool outside parties at The Wizard during the summer, but the Cowboy Chili Challenge was a little different. Entrants had to cook outside over a wood fire. Mike had some old big truck rims welded up that made great cookers. This was my second time cooking in the Cowboy Chili Challenge. I love cooking over a campfire and have some cast iron pots. It is a challenge getting the fire right and cooking outside. Making a batch of chili ready in just a couple hours instead of all day simmering. My Pink Pig Chili turned out great. Next year I think I’ll make some Basic Beef and Beans Chili, real cowboy style. This year there was a Cornbread Competition too. I had been practicing since last summer to cook cornbread in my Dutch Oven. Mine turned out real pretty, cooked just right. Some folks got their iron a little too hot and burnt the bottom. Oh well, slice that off and enjoy the good part. I made a brownie on the fire too and it was perfect. I heard someone say, “It’s more about the comradery than the competition.” That was true, all day I was greeted by Biker

Kelly Huffman, Connelly Springs, NC, won both the Judges’ Choice and Peoples’ Choice with her Vegetarian Chili. That White Chili Matters Team always makes a good pot of chili. One Nut George, a local Hickory boy, won the Cornbread Contest. Mine was pretty, but his tasted better. Mike said, “Thanks to the folks who came to cook and all those who came for chili and a good time with friends. We raised more than $1,500 for the Conover School. Glad to see folks are getting out and back to having a good time in 2022. Thanks for supporting the events we have all year.” Looked to me like the folks enjoyed the Cowboy Chili Challenge. Y’all oughta come on down and serve up your best next time Mike hauls out the cookers and firewood.

PGR Mission For Al Evans Jr. By: Wally Wersching he Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) is a group of volunteers dedicated to the honorable burial of fallen heroes of the military, law enforcement, and emergency responders. A PGR Mission is to attend the memorial as invited guests of the family, and respectfully honor the fallen hero during the funeral service, and burial (some with full military honors). On Wednesday April 6th, I received an email inviting me to be part of the PGR Mission for Al Evans Jr. Robert Downs would be the ride captain for the Mission. I’ve known Robert for many years. We have been on many PGR Missions together. This Mission was a special one because Al was also a member of the PGR, and we both have stood many flag lines with him over the years. The service for Al would be on April 11th at 11:00AM at the Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery at 6611 Hudlow Road in Union Mills, NC. Crowe’s Mortuary at 118 College Avenue in Rutherfordton would be officiating. Al was 73 years old when he died. He served his country all his life. He was a sniper in the 5th Army Rangers Wolfpack in Vietnam, and afterwards was a police officer in Atlanta, GA for over 20 years. Then he moved to North Carolina, where he continued to support the Patriot Guard, Rolling Thunder, Sons

of Liberty, and the Wounded Warrior Program. It was an honor to be part of this Mission. I had to go. I decided to go directly to the cemetery instead of meeting at Crowe’s Mortuary. I’m not comfortable riding in a group. I left home on Monday April 11th at about 9:30AM. The directions to the cemetery that I found on-line said that it would take almost an hour to get to the cemetery. I headed west on Rt 74, and veered right to get onto Rt 74A to go toward Rutherfordton. At one of the stoplights in Rutherfordton, I noticed that the group was already at the mortuary. I saw about 30 bikes parked in front.

I continued on Rt 74A into the town of Ruth, where I turned left to go to Rt 221. I turned right onto Rt 221 heading north toward Marion. After a few miles, I turned right onto Hudlow Road, and the church was about a mile on the right – the cemetery was across the road on the left. I pulled into the large parking lot next to the honor guard from the Boiling Springs, SC American Legion. We talked for a while. I had met them before at other PGR Missions. When the Commander walked up, and told them to go closer to the gravesite, I followed, and parked “Miss Vickie” behind their vehicle. We all waited for the PGR to arrive. Then we heard the rumble of motorcycles in the distance. The sound got louder, and finally, we saw the bikes rolling into the cemetery. Robert was leading the group while riding his Victory. After they parked, I walked up to get a flag, and join in the flag line. We all lined up in a large circle around the tent where the family would be. The family members and other mourners filled the seats under the tent. Then, a man started talking and called all of us in the flag line closer so that we could hear the ceremony. Brother Curtis Lane officiated the ceremony, and had many nice things to say about Al. Then a man who had served in Vietnam with Al talked about how brave and courageous Al was during the war.

They played a few hymns on a small sound system, and then they folded the flag. The Honor Guard fired three rifle volleys. Then the honor guard played “Taps” which has been standard at military funeral ceremonies since 1891. “There is something singularly beautiful and appropriate in the music of this wonderful call. Its strains are melancholy, yet full of rest and peace. I always get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye when I hear a bugle play “Taps”. Afterwards, the Commander of the Honor Guard gave the folded flag to Vickie (Al’s wife) along with three spent rifle shells representing the three volleys. The flag line dispersed, and we went to put the flags back in the bag until they are needed to honor the next American hero. Robert called us around, and thanked us all for participating. After putting our flags away, we all headed out in different directions – back to our lives; ready to come again when needed to honor another fallen veteran. I’ll keep checking my email for more PGR Missions in my area. It’s my way of honoring our veterans. I’m sure that the PGR will be there for my memorial service when I need them.

Grand Re-Opening

At Indian Motorcycle Greensboro Triad By: Rose & Lloyd

8th & 9th, Friday and Saturday, Indian Motorcycle Greensboro Triad started their Grand ReOpening at their new location 2924 North Main St. in High Point N.C. This was a two day celebration with the Indian Demo truck on site both days so riders could take these cool bikes out for a spin. I believe I saw just about every brand and model of bikes pulling into the parking lot to check out these new Indians and ride out for a test run. Seriously, there were bikers of all types and many of them test rode every single model. It was a day of constant in and out of the parking lot and many times all the demos were out. Having relocated to North Main gives Indian Motorcycle Greensboro Triad a huge area for events like this. There’s plenty of space for parking, staging rides, swap meets, bike nights, the whole works. But, back to the Grand Re-Opening. Friday’s weather was great and that helped a lot with attendance. Saturday’s weather was a bit cooler and overcast, but, guess what? People were still flowing in the parking lot and Saturday was a repeat of Friday. Everything was the same, except Saturday they were serving hotdogs, chips and sodas and they also had a swap your swag (swap your old T-Shirt for a new one) pretty good deal huh? It’s always interesting to hear what people have to say upon their return on their Demo and listen to comparisons. One common statement I heard over and over was, “man, these things are fast!” And another common thing I noticed was all the smiles. Be sure to stop in and say hello to the friendly staff here at Indian and check out their parts and accessories. It was a great two days spent at Indian Motorcycle Greensboro Triad and I foresee lots of cool events coming up. Jessi Marie Lindsley Memorial Run By: Jeanie Hood Carter essi was a local to the

Fayetteville area most of her life. She was brutally murdered in Gray’s Creek November 2021. In her honor a Memorial Run & fundraiser was held April 09, 2022. The RUN was held at Gray’s Creek Bar and Grill. Stops were 22Klicks, Corner Pockets, and The Sports Fan. High hand was won by Frank Diaz which generously donated back.

Many generous donations came in from friends and a fabulous raffle boosted to the funds for final expenses and to help with her sons. Jessi loved riding sport bikes, & horses, was an avid fisher, loved her family & friends and would give anyone the shirt off her back. She truly lived life and will never be forgotten. Thank you to all who supported and participated. #justiceforjessi

The 3.1-gallon lightweight plastic fuel cell is located below the seat – what appears to be a traditional fuel tank forward of the seat is a steel cover for the airbox. The fuel fill is reached by lifting the hinged locking seat. Locating the fuel cell below the seat optimizes the capacity of the engine intake airbox and moves the weight of fuel lower in the chassis compared to a traditional fuel tank location, which results in a lower center of gravity for improved handling and easier lift off the side stand. The Nightster™ model features a round 4.0-inch-diameter analog speedometer with an inset multi-function LCD display mounted on the handlebar riser. All-LED lighting is designed

to deliver style and outstanding performance while also making the motorcycle conspicuous to other motorists. The Daymaker® LED headlamp has been designed to produce a homogenous spread of light, eliminating distracting hot spots. Combination rear brake/tail/signal LED lighting is located on the rear fender (US market only). All-new from the wheels up with a look that is lean, low, and powerful, the Nightster model conveys classic Sportster model styling cues, most obviously in the exposed rear shock absorbers and the shape of an airbox cover that evokes the iconic Sportster walnut fuel tank. The round air intake cover, solo seat, chopped fenders and speed screen recall elements of recent Sportster models, while a side cover that conceals the under-seat fuel tank has a shape similar to the previous Sportster oil tank. Angel Talavera cruising to a chopper campout, bike night or other various motorcycle event. He’s a real rider and doesn’t mind putting some miles behind him. He caught our eye with his 1981 H-D Lowrider Chopper, Ratfuckt. “When I found the bike it was already a project ratrod. It was coughing and sputtering and needed some love.” Angel said. Angel took the bike home and tore it down and did a top end refresh, rejetted the S&S Super E Carb and started to make it his own. He pieced it together with some ’92 Sportster parts, 2008 Softail Deluxe parts and a few nickel and dime parts that he picked up at swap meets and from Chopper exchange websites. What he couldn’t by he made or called on friends to make. He runs a Baker 6-Speed transmission with the 1340 Shovelhead engine so it will comfortable cruise at high speeds. “It’s a solid running bike” he added. Ratfuct even came with a real taxidermied rat that Angel zip tied to the handlebars as a constant companion. It’s definitely one of those bikes that you gotta stop and take a look at. The longer you look, the more you’ll see. “It’s custom in every way you can think of, but it’s not pretty and I like it that way” Angel concluded. Angel puts the miles on Ratfuckt and said, “It’s a rider, I ride this bike to events. It doesn’t see a trailer unless I break down and can’t fix it on the side of the road.” There was this time that he built a trailer to pull his camping gear to the chopper campout…but I’ll let him tell you that story. I’d offered to drive my mother-in-law to the doctor. But when I arrived at her house, I found her gossiping away with a neighbor. “Mom, we’ve got to go,” I interjected, but she couldn’t hear me over the chatter. “Mom!” I repeated as I pulled her away. “Sorry, but I didn’t know what to do,” she said getting it to the car. “She wouldn’t stop listening to me!” Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He’s not breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls 911. “I think my friend is dead!” he yells. “What can I do?” The operator says, “Calm down. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There’s a silence, then a shot. Back on the phone, the guy says, “Okay, now what?” A reporter covering the Iowa State Legislature proceedings wore light summer shoes on a day when it snowed, and the following day – a pleasant, dry one – he wore overshoes. A legislator asked him about it. “It’s the effect of being around government,” he replied. “I am now prepared for yesterday.” A man walks out on his front porch one day and sees a gorilla in the tree on his front lawn. He calls animal control and about an hour later a man shows up with a ladder, a pit bull, and a shotgun. The animal control employee tells the man, “I’m here to get the gorilla out of your tree. I’m going to use this ladder to climb up the tree and shake the branch the gorilla is on to knock him to the ground. The pit bull is trained to go after anything that falls from the tree and bites their balls which calms the animal down so I can put him in the truck.” The man says “Okay, I see what

At a party, a young wife admonished her husband, “That’s the fourth time you’ve gone back for cake and ice cream. Doesn’t it embarrass you?” “Why should it?” answered her spouse. “I keep telling them it’s for you.” A lady comes home from her doctor’s appointment grinning from ear to ear. Her husband asks, “Why are you so happy?” The wife says, “The doctor told me that for a forty-five year old woman, I have the breasts of a eighteen year old.” “Oh yeah?” quipped her husband, “What did he say about your forty-five year old ass?” She said, “Your name never came up in the conversation.” During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approaches the pastor with an unusual offer. “Look, I’ll give you $100 if you’ll change the wedding vows. When you get to the part where I’m supposed to promise to ‘love, honor, and obey’ and ‘be faithful to her forever,’ I’d appreciate it if you’d just leave that out.” He passes the minister a $100 bill and walks away satisfied. On the day of the wedding, when it comes time for the groom’s vows, the pastor looks the young man in the eye and says, “Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?” The groom gulps, looks around, and says in a tiny voice, “Yes,” then leans toward the pastor

A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa, taking her poodle along for company. One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, discovers that he’s lost. Wandering about, he notices a hungry-looking leopard heading rapidly in his direction. The poodle thinks, “Uh, oh!” Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the poodle exclaims loudly, “Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?” Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. “Whew!” says the leopard. “That was close! That poodle nearly had me!” Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, “Here, monkey, hop on my back so you can watch me chew that poodle to bits!” Now, the poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, “What am I going to do now?” but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet, and waits until they get just close enough to hear. “Where’s that damn monkey?” the poodle says. “I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!”
