ay is a big month for motorcycling in the Carolinas. The first thing that comes to mind is nice warm weather and Carolina blue skies that make riding so nice. The first Sunday in May is reserved for the Freedom Memorial Wall Dedication at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC (www.SmokinHarley.com/Freedom-Memorial-Wall.htm). This year is the 19th Annual Memorial Wall Dedication. It is a time of remembrance for those who have ridden on ahead. There is a memorial ride, raffles, a 50/50, food, and music. The 5th Annual Bulldog Hero Awards presented by Bob Karney, Carolinas Biker Lawyer will be awarded on May 7th at Cox’s H-D in Asheboro. May 7th is also International Female Ride Day. There are many dealerships that are celebrating, so check your Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for more information. The next thing that comes to mind is Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week. This year, the MBSBW is May 13-22 or there about depending on who you ask. If you ask anyone around here if they are going to the beach, it is Myrtle Beach. Same thing if you ask them if they are going to the rally, it’s Myrtle Beach Bike Rally. There is lots to see and do while in Myrtle Beach and many businesses have taken the “they are going to come spend their money regardless” attitude. However, in this issue you will find advertisements that will direct you to establishments that have not taken your patronage for granted. I hope that you will seek them out, stop by, and let them know that you saw their ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Thunder In the Smokies Spring Rally will be held May 13-15 at the Festival Grounds in Maggie Valley, NC. This is the largest and longest running bike rally in Maggie Valley. This is a fun rally that pays out $1000 for the People’s Choice Bike Show winner and another $1000 for bike game winners. There is a guided ride, food, 50/50, vendors, music, and more. Discount tickets are available at ThunderInTheSmokies.com. The Antique Motorcycle Club of America holds its Southern National Swap Meet at Denton Farm Park on May 20-21. There are lots of vendors, a narrated antique motorcycle parade, bike games, and camping in a beautiful country setting. If you like old motorcycles and have never been, make it this year. It’s a peach! Rolling Thunder XXIX “Ride For Freedom” Demonstration is launching from the Pentagon parking lot in Washington, DC on May 29. This is not a rally. It is a demonstration to show support for all POW/ MIA and to demand that the US government account for them. This ride will change you forever if you attend. 30th Annual Bike Show And Chili Cook Off By: Kathy Johnson Usually the Durham H.O.G. Chapter Bike Show And Chili Cook Off is the first nice riding day of the year. Not this year. It was a cold and dreary day, but it never rained on anyone! I think a lot of chromophobes kept their trailer queens home not wanting to risk a drop on their un-ridden rides. For the people that did enter the bike show, there were some lookers and it is nice it is decided and judged by the attendees. Great vendors were set up. The HOG chapter had baked goods, a silent auction, and yes, trying to roll the dice to spell H-A-R-L-E-Y, Law firm of Gary Poole, Triangle Tap, Durham 81, and Aiden’s Ride NC. Let’s not forget that ride is approaching soon so save the date May 7 @ Rommel H-D. Be there! When you ventured inside the dealership bikes where being sold and all the associates where busy but helpful. They made time to even help the people that wanted to do the leprechaun launch. A associate had to be on each side of you holding this giant sling shot while you pulled it back to launch the leprechaun and get it like a half court shot into a tire. If you even landed in the bullseye you got 200 points loaded on your Rommel Rewards card. Anyway, it was fun. Like you just laughed watching people. So, time to mosey back out side to hear the chili cook off winners. Judge’s choice was Alisa, People’s Choice Doug Banks. Congratulations! Then it was nearing the time of the announcements for the bike show winners. A tell tale sign for me on that is seeing Bonnie Robbins A.K.A. “Firecracker” take her seat as close as she can get to the front. You see you are going to hear her loud and proud yelling for her sons every year as they compete in the bike show.

So all that was left was the winner of the bike this year the lucky recipient was Pat Roat. What a win! Jam Garrett won a $300 Gift Card and Tom Konsler won $150 Gift Card. They also gave door prizes out through out the event and had a 50/50. So they had all the bells and whistles. A lot of hard work goes into this event from Rommel HD in Durham and the Durham HOG Chapter. They appreciate everyone who came out and hope to see you next year! Personally I think it is a great event and rain or shine it lets you know summer is right around the corner. By: Don Shipwash As spring slipped in all cool and cloudy on March 19th, a small group of dedicated brothers and friends gathered at BBQ Joes on NC 62 in Trinity, NC. Their purpose was to participate in a benefit ride for fellow biker, Tommy Shipwash, who was recently diagnosed with stage four brain cancer. The ride, escorted by Randolph County Sheriff’s Motor Patrol, headed out winding through Trinity and scenic Randolph County to Cox’s Harley-Davidson. Once there the riders were treated to live music and the smell of food in the air. Mother Nature was nice and held off the rain for this event. Attendees enjoyed a mix of music, food, a silent auction, and fellowship. The Shipwash family would like to thank all who participated, helped, and donated to this cause. Vietnam War Veterans 50th Anniversary By: Wally Wersching From the mid 1950’s to the mid 1970’s, we were involved with the Vietnam War. It was not a very popular war with the American public. The nightly TV news had coverage of the daily events of the war. Many people wanted the US to pull out of the war especially when the death tolls were published. Over 58,000 men were killed in action in Vietnam during the war. Their average age was a little over 19 years old. They had their whole life ahead of them but they gave it up for their country. That was bad enough, but when the soldiers came home after spending a year in hell, there were protests against them instead of welcome home parades. It was a sad time for American veterans. Recently the American public’s view of their Veterans has changed, and they are trying to make amends for the way the Vietnam War Veteran was treated. On Tuesday, March 29th, the US Department of Veterans Affairs offered a welcome home, and tribute that many who fought in Vietnam never received. March 29 is Vietnam Veterans Day because it was on that day in 1973 that U.S. troops officially withdrew from Vietnam. A nationwide commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the war is currently underway. It started on Memorial Day 2012, and runs through Veterans Day 2025. The Defense Department is overseeing the 13-year commemoration to recognize those who served on active duty from Nov. 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975. More than 5,300 activities have been planned. A full listing of events, as well as an interactive historical timeline of the Vietnam War, fact sheets, maps, and more can be found at: www.VietNamWar50th.com I learned about the event in Greenville, SC from the Patriot Guard Riders. They had a Help On The Homefront (HOTH) mission and invited all the local PGR members to attend. Also Jeff - Director, American Legion Riders, Chapter 3, sent me a personal invitation to attend. I was on active duty in the US Navy from October 1965 to November 1969 so I am considered a Vietnam era veteran. I decided to go, and ride “Miss Vickie”. The weather was supposed to be great for early spring with temps in the upper 60’s under sunny skies. I awoke early on Tuesday morning, and was surprised to see the frost on the rooftops when I walked the dog. I checked the weather, and the temp at 8AM was 39º. I opted to wear my insulated bibs, and my warm leather jacket. The first 15 minutes on the ride was cold, but either it warmed up or I got numb, because the rest of the ride was very comfortable. I had a little trouble finding Butler Springs Park and was relieved when I eventually found it. I wasn’t alone. Other people had trouble finding it, too. After I parked, I walked to the PGR group, and told them I was a Vietnam era veteran. The leader said that I should enjoy the ceremony and not worry about the flag line. They had it

covered. While I was there, I saw Jeff ride in so I took his picture. Later, we both had fun catching up. The ceremony was very patriotic. The marine color guard came up and we all said the “Pledge of Allegiance”, and then a young lady sang the Star Spangled Banner. The National Anthem is one of the hardest songs to sing because of the range needed. She sang it perfectly. After a few words, a vet got up to speak. He works at the Greenville Vet Center, and is a Vietnam Veteran who spent his time “In Country”. He talked for about 15 minutes, and it was very interesting. Some of the terms he used were only recognized by fellow men that were there. Even though I’m a Vietnam Era Veteran, I cannot compare with the actual men who were there. I felt a little out of place, and in awe of what they went through. After the speeches, the food was served. They had a typical BBQ spread, and the men and women enjoyed themselves. I met a very interesting young lady. She was a veteran of the Iraq conflict. We hit it off because she was a Seabee (in the Navy), and a 2nd class petty officer as I was. She was hit by a mortar shell while she was in bed. She lost the use of her legs. She thanked me for my service, and I thanked her back but I had difficulty saying thanks to her for her service when it changed her life forever. My thanks seemed hollow. I have problems with just saying thank you. She had no bitter feelings for what happened, and was a pleasure to talk with. Tabitha Miller with the Greenville Vet Center put the whole program together. I could see that it took a lot of planning and hard work. After eating a BBQ sandwich, I left. On my way out, I received a pin commemorating the event. I rode home in comfort because it had warmed up to about 65º. It was a great way to spend a retirement day. I will go to as many other Vietnam Veterans events in the future as I can.

4th Annual NC Sandhills Bike Blessing By: Jody and Pam Shotwell The NC Sandhills Bike Blessing hosted annually by Freedom Biker Church in Fayetteville and held on the first Saturday in April is always a great event. It was established four years ago to reach out and pray for those in our community that ride, to pray for their safety and anything else that is going on in their life. All the volunteers met at 6 am at the Vander Civic Center for a pancake breakfast prepared by C.L.U.T.C.H., the church’s couples group. Our pastor, JD Tew, opened with prayer, gave out assignments, and let the fun begin! Pancakes, sausage, coffee, and juice were served to the public from 7 to 9. Even though it was a cloudy day, temperatures were in the low sixties with rain threatening, Rolling Thunder’s Big E led a group of dedicated bikers on a sixty-five mile ride. The damp ride started at 9 am departing from the Vander Civic Center, riding through Cumberland, Bladen, and Sampson Counties, returning to FBC-Fayetteville just in time for the 11:00 Bike Blessing kick-off. All 32 vendors were set up on the church property and the people started showing up, on bikes and in cages. Some of Fayetteville’s motorcycle shops, which included Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson, Fayetteville Powersports, Flip My Cycle, and Lumberton’s Cycle Works brought some “Big Boy Toys.” By now it was really threatening rain, but for a good cause, bikers will weather the storm. At 11 am Pastor JD Tew welcomed everyone and the 4th Annual NC Sandhills Bike Blessing was ON! Scott James, our D.J. provided good-time music. The local food truck, R-Burgers served hot dogs, hamburgers, and french fries while Freedom’s Cooking and Home teams provided BBQ sandwiches with chips. For those with a sweet tooth, The Chocolate Lady had frozen chocolate covered cheesecake and delicious strawberries dipped in chocolate. There were a variety of other vendors selling products including leather accessories, motorcycle parts, hand-made knives, and biker jewelry. Each person who registered received a ‘free’ packet which included a bike blessing dog tag with a Bible verse (Matthew 6:33), which says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”, a helmet sticker, and tickets for some great door prizes. Some of the door prizes included bike services, gas cards, oil, sporting goods, tattoo gift cards, vehicle services, and many restaurant gift cards. Roxanne Britton won the $375

tattoo gift certificate from the award winning Cherry Blossom Tattoo in downtown Fayetteville. There was a silent auction for a nice BiLT helmet donated by Cycle Gear. Eric Cole made the winning bid with a $250 donation. Freedom Biker Church member Michael Bailey, who passed away a year ago, left his 1984 Iron Head chopper to the church and it was raffled off at the end of the Bike Blessing. FBC member Derrick Amos was the lucky winner of the 1984 Iron Head Chopper! There were over 300 motorcycles and approximately 600 people in attendance. Freedom Biker Church was well represented from other locations in North Carolina including the home office in Clayton, Freedom Hickory, Freedom Triad, and Freedom Monroe. They had to endure some rainy highways to get to our event. At 12:30 pm, everyone was officially welcomed by Nat Robertson, the Mayor of Fayetteville, Col. Dale Johnson, who served 33 years in the Army with multiple combat tours prayed for our military (Vets. active duty, those deployed and their families), and then Pastor JD Tew lead the main prayer for all the bikes. Members of Freedom Biker Church blessed individual bikes throughout the parking lot. Even though we had a few showers throughout the day, everyone had a great time getting reacquainted, starting new friendships, and making memories. We would like to thank everyone who came out and celebrated this event with us. Whether you ride a motorcycle or not, if you need a church where the word of God is spoken truthfully, we would love to be your church. Start making plans now for next year. The 5th Annual NC Sandhills Bike Blessing will be held the first Saturday in April (April 1) 2017. So, mark your calendar. As always, it will be a great event and we all need to be “Blessed!”

Spring Burnout 2016 Story and photo by: Zach Ponton Tilley Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC got riding season off to a roaring start with the Spring Burnout on Saturday, April 9th. The day started out cool and calm. Vendors rolled in early for the expected crowd of hundreds of bikers and families coming out to enjoy the free concert and great deals on bikes and accessories. Tilley’s staff was ready, tables set, food trucks cooking, beer on tap, and the stage was waiting for the sound crew. The store opened at 9, just as the fierce winds that were forecast began to cut across the parking lot. At first, it wasn’t too bad, but nothing a set of leathers couldn’t handle. The wind began to grab the smoke from the food trucks and fill the air. You could smell that a party was in the mix. All the ingredients for a blowout bash were on hand, but I had my fingers crossed the wind would die down and warmer air prevail. Parking stacked up past Camping World as hundreds of customers rolled in. The Statesville HOG Chapter shuttled people from Morland Drive to the party in the parking lot. Kyle Petty came out with his wife Morgan to raise awareness for the Victory Junction Gang Camp, sell T-shirts from the Kyle Petty Charity Ride, and meet loyal customers. There’s no doubt that Kyle drew his own crowd of people who came to thank him for his charitable donations and what he does for the kids at Victory Junction. By noon, the parking lot was packed. Bikers began to fill the dealership browsing for the newest, latest, and greatest products. Smokey J’s BBQ Truck had a line of customers just waiting to get some good ole BBQ. Root Down food truck had the customers talking about how delicious the food was and that they couldn’t believe it came off the truck. Freedom Biker Church of Hickory brought along their own band, Thirteenth Tribe, to kick off the live music and held their 2nd Annual Foothills Blessing Of The Bikes. Skull Camp Brewing came down from Elkin to serve the customers ice cold craft beer. The line was long and they just about drained all their kegs by the end of the day. We had plenty of vendors to keep our customers happy. The Monster Energy girls kept everyone energized with free Monsters. JR Cigars, Madvapes, Kristy Dell from Tilley H-D Salisbury’s Riding Academy, Richardson’s Rods and Customs Paint, and Call Family Distillery were there. Customers flowed through the doors and filled out tickets for their chance to win a Free Harley-Davidson Roll Cart Cooler.

Just after noon the wind was at its worst, blowing strong and cutting the cold air through those who braved it without leathers. It didn’t seem to bother anyone though, as people were in the party spirit and ready for the riding season to completely blow wide open. The Legal Limit Band kicked off the show around 1:30 and rocked the parking lot. Bongo Bach and his electric green drum set stood out standing atop the stage and had everyone feeling the rock! They kicked out the jams and had everyone feeling good and forgetting about the wind. Preacher Stone was on stage next. The guys were in great spirits and ready to rock all the Tilley Harley-Davidson customers. After talking with them, they were truly amped up to put on a killer show. Finally the wind died down. The crowd gathered, beers in hand, and anticipation in the air. Preacher Stone on stage, huddle over the drum set ready to kick it off. They break, the amplifiers ring, and then like a buzz saw, the guitars scream, the bass pounds, and the drums provide the blow that kicks it off as Ronnie Riddle begins to sing into the microphone. The crowd cheers as that Southern Rock N’ Roll pours out of the huge speakers in front of the stage. The show is underway and all eyes are on the stage. Customers begin to pump their fists in the air, beers up saluting the band, and cheering. It is obvious that they all love what they hear. Preacher Stone absolutely rocked the show for the next hour and a half, kicking out song after song. They ended their set with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’ that had the crowd going out on a high. The concert was over. The crowd began to disperse, the sounds of Harley-Davidson V-Twins firing up filled the parking lot as customers headed home after a long day partying. A few people stuck around to meet the band and get signatures, buy merchandise and CDs. The band members were awesome, shaking hands and willing to talk with anyone who wanted to

say hi and meet the guys who just put on a great show. I stuck around for a while, thanking everyone for coming and making sure folks got off safely. Everyone said they had a great time and it was a great party. By the end of the day... the wind was gone, the parking lot empty, the stage bare, no bikes or cars in sight. As I drove around the lot to make sure nothing was left behind, I stopped at the end of the drive as the sun reflected over the dealership. It was the calm after the Burnout. I sat there and reflected on the day. I smiled and thought... what an awesome time. Hope to do it again. To all the customers who came out, Thank you! See you again soon!

Big Al’s Tree House Hosts 12th Annual Central District CBA/ABATE Spoker Run By: Rose and Lloyd The Central District of NC CBA/ABATE had their 17th Annual Spoker Run on Saturday, April 12th. The CBA stands for Concerned Bikers Association. This is a state motorcycle rights organization fighting unfair legislation, while improving the public image and fostering brotherhood and sisterhood of all motorcyclists. They also highlight awareness of bikers in the public for safer riding There were 9 CBA chapters of the Central District, which started their day at different locations and ended at Big Al’s Tree House in High Point, NC. Approximately 80 bikes arrived at Big Al’s a little after 1pm for great food, entertainment from Huckleberry Shyne, and Craven Morgan Band. Kate Moorhead won the 50/50 and donated the money back to the CBA. The grand prize of the day, $500, was won by Tuttle. The money raised will enable NC CBA to send representatives to the 25th Annual Meeting of the

The Bunny Run Easter Sunday 2016

By: Everette “EZ” Short Twenty-six years is a long time to continue a tradition that is based on chasing a fictitious entity through the streets of Myrtle Beach on motorcycles, but apparently it’s only a moment in time for Mr. Dicky Martin AKA The Easter Bunny. On March 27, 2016, the 26th Annual Bunny Run started at Dog House Donny’s Saloon under a severe storm siren blaring in the distance, with heavy-laden thunderclouds and a lot of iffy rain hovering near us. While waiting for everyone to arrive, presumably from church on an Easter Sunday, the crowd went into an uproar of Bloody Mary mayhem, moonshine madness, and Budweiser bafflement with our very own Donny “The Dogfather” Emery leading the way with freely poured shots of Grandma to the face. Near noon, the crowd of at least 300 bikes left to go to all the way to Barnacle Bill’s Rum And Raw Bar in the middle of Myrtle Beach proper. If you’ve never been to Barnacle Bill’s, then you need to go. The food is outstanding and the help is easy on the eyes. Let me tell you that if you have never been on a ride for no reason or experienced a road show composed of slippery outfitted chaos, where you don’t have any idea where your next destination is, while you chase a wild man who looks like Gomez Adams, chomping a big, fat cigar in a full blown bunny suit in the pounding rain on an Easter Sunday afternoon, then you’ve never lived. The real truth of the ride is that it is a testament to our extended biker family here at the beach, that so many would turn out on such a stormy day to pursue The Rabbit down the hole. By the time this ratcheted up band of hooligans saddled up for the next ride, no one had any idea where the next stop was and the rain had come on shore with a vengeance by the time we rolled into The Boathouse on the Waterway. Even though The Boathouse is a gigantic barn of a bar, it was filled to capacity when The Bunny came in with his troupe of wet

barbarians. The drinks flowed freely throughout the adventure, but I had to cut out to go back to work, so I was limited to sweet tea and water. Believe me, the whole kaleidoscopic scene that is The Bunny Run makes a lot more sense when you’ve been drinking. I have to give a big HELL YEAH to all the wait staff and owners for not only putting up with all our lurid insanity and shameless shenanigans, but they even welcomed us back for next year. I guess they should since even one of the owners got into the action with a burnout on his bike inside the bar. This year we rode to honor a fallen family member, Angie, who lost her fight with cancer earlier this year. We’ll never forget you Angie and I kept expecting you to walk in at every stop. We miss you dearly, young lady, and the commemorative Bunny pin for this year featured a halo on the ears as a tribute to our love for her. Last, but not least, The Bunny himself, Mr. Dicky Martin, deserves an entire article of his own, since he is a bright and shining icon in the motorcycle industry, a master mechanic, an intense builder of unique customs, and a Legend in the SC Biker Hall of Fame. His son Eric was along for the ride, too, but I don’t think Dicky is quite ready to give up the suit anytime soon. noon. Bikers lined up to take the Stars for a little cruise around town on their motorcycles. There were many sponsors and supporters that came together to make this a memorable day for the children. Sponsors included Blue Marlin, Flight Deck Restaurant, Gregory Electric Company Inc., Honda Cars of Columbia, Lexington County Blowfish Baseball, Lexington High School ROTC, Lucas Septic Tank & Utility Services, McWhirter, Bellinger & Associates, P.A., Mitchell Printing & Graphics, and Palmetto Propane. Motorcycles partners were ABATE of SC, Carolina Cycles, Harley Haven, & Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. The local news gathered a count of over 300 motorcycles. At 2 pm we got ready to go for the ride of lifetime. This was a police escort ride that let us ride through many stoplights and stop signs. After the ride, we all came back to the high school to finish up the big drawing for a motorcycle giveaway and learn that the total amount of money that was raised was $27,500! What a blessing this was! We want to thank all that came out and the good Lord above for giving us a sunny day for making this year’s SC Midlands Ride For Kids a more successful turnout.

Creekside Bike Rally Story and Photos by Alan Dockery Riding and rally season seems to be starting early this year. Great! The 4th Annual Creekside Rally gave local bikers their first event of the season. Hosted by the Southern Gentlemen MC and presented by Home Town Hawgs, the Creekside Rally was on a nice private country property, in Gaston County, NC, where we could catch up with friends and party for the weekend. Folks started riding in Friday afternoon to set up camp and vendor spots. Friends I hadn’t seen lately gave me a good excuse for beer breaks. By suppertime we had our spot squared away and I was ready to eat. Good food vendors at Creekside. Billy Hardy was flippin’ burgers and dogs. Phat Phil’s Smokehouse served great meals from breakfast to supper. I liked Josh Ramos’ empanadas, and Dave was cookin’ chicken. Jimmy Jam ran the DJ booth handling tunes and announcements during the day. But it was the Friday night band many of us were looking forward to. After dark, Preacher Stone took the stage and rocked Creekside. This Charlotte-based band has gained national attention, appearing on Sons of Anarchy. Saturday morning was cold and windy as folks slowly got going and more people rode in for the day or to spend the night. A cruise of the vendors showed a variety of cool things to check out and buy. Home Town Hawgs was selling bikes, leathers and more. Aim Defense was raffling off a tactical

shotgun. Clubs like the Sentinels Of Hope and Guardians Of The Children were raising money for folks in need. Carl and Caren Barnes could make you all kinds of cool things with your photos on them. Gaston County CBA was there to let you know about motorcyclists’ rights issues. Other vendors down the row had everything from pins to sunglasses to knives to cornhole boards. On the far end were Karen and Chasity with some cool things to spice up your love life from Pure Romance. That afternoon Griz and Red from the Carolina Thunder put on some bike games. No, they didn’t let Copperhead ride his sidecar rig in the slow race nor try the weenie bite with six girls on the bike. John Watts and Peebles cleaned up in the games. He won the Slow Ride and together they won the Weenie Bite, Ball On Cones and Ski Race. Michelle Sturm said she hadn’t ridden lately but she kept it steady to win the Plank Ride. Andrew Copeland and Paula hooked up to win Pole In The Hole. Saturday night Sweatin’ Bullets rocked Creekside as people partied into the night. “Over four years we keep learning how to make the Creekside Rally better,” said Lucky Brooks, event coordinator. “There are lots folks to thank, from the Southern Gentlemen members to riders who came to the rally and other clubs who support us. Thanks to Danny Bollinger and Chris Johnson of Home Town Hawgs for their sponsorship and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for promotion. Tim and Mary McGinnis made the signs. The Christian Motorcyclists Association for bike blessing, help with parking and handing out water. Big thanks to Peewee and Jill Stillwell for all they do. And everyone appreciated the bands, Jeff Rainwater and Sweatin’ Bullets and the guys with Preacher Stone.”

Bub Lollis Whitten Center Run By: Sheila Underwood I just learned to ride a motorcycle 2 years ago at the age of 55. I took a class and got my license and decided to buy a Harley. Last year was my first time in joining the Anderson, SC Electric City H.O.G. Chapter in the Bub Lollis Memorial ride to the Whitten Center in Clinton, SC. I was forewarned about the emotional ride through the Center, but you really never know how it is until you’re there in it. First, pulling up to see the hundreds of motorcycles in the Clinton town square was absolutely amazing to me! I’ve never been in or around this kind of scene. I was just in awe and smiling as I was walking around to see all the bikes and people! Then we all hopped on our bikes and started them, and with the roar of all the bikes came another rush! It was so exciting to know that I was going make history again and be a part of a legacy.

I learned how Bub Lollis was a WWII vet. I’m an Army brat, so know all about military life. then I learned he fell in love with motorcycles and even raced on the beaches of Daytona! Then I found out about Bub getting a small group of bikers from Spartanburg 27 years ago to ride down to the Whitten Center to do a parade on a rainy day. He wanted to donate to the residents the necessities they lacked and he got his reward from them by seeing their smiles and waves. I also wanted that! And now there are almost a thousand bikers that come out to ride in this parade and bringing their donations. You can’t explain to anyone the emotions you experience! One minute you’re on a high from being a part of a large group of bikers, and you feel it can’t get better, but it does when you begin your ride and see people along the road waving at you as you ride to the Whitten Center. Then when you pull into the Center and see all the residents, some in wheel chairs, some standing, some dressed up for the special occasion, you have a deep happy feeling, then all of a sudden deep sadness, with tears rolling down you faces because you know that most of these people have no one! No one to visit them, no one to celebrate with, etc. and to see their disabilities, that some can’t even wave at you but only smile or a soft wave. But that smile and that wave! You get back up on a high again! I left feeling so honored and blessed, but I also felt sad cause I couldn’t do more, then I felt great because it so awesome to see a parade of motorcycles! Normally, I don’t want to deal with such a roller coaster of emotions, but I chose to do it all over again this year and will do it over and over as long as I can. I’m so thankful that I made the decision to learn to ride and join the Electric City H.O.G. Chapter of Anderson, SC.

PGR Mission For Dewey Gossett

By: Wally Wersching Dewey Gossett was 21 years old when World War II broke out. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps (the military division that became the US Air Force), and was assigned to fly an A-36 Apache in the European campaign over Italy. On September 11, 1943 he was assigned to the 527th Fighter Squadron, 86th Fighter Group, 12th Air Force, and participated in the Sicilian campaign attack near Troina. Sometimes called the Apache or Invader, the A-36 plane Dewey piloted was a dive-bombing, ground-attack version of the P-51 Mustang, but it was far more vulnerable. The tail of his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire, but Dewey managed to return to base. A photo documenting the battle damage was released to the press, accompanied by the caption: “Take it and come back safely.” On Sept. 27, 1943, Dewey was in a flight of four aircraft searching for targets of opportunity on a strafing mission. Within 10 minutes of departing Sele Airfield in Italy, the aircraft encountered bad weather and poor visibility, leading them to fly into a ravine under cloud cover. Upon exiting the ravine, three planes turned left, while Dewey’s turned right, and disappeared near Acerno, Italy. He apparently crashed into Mount Accellica - a mountain in the Monti Picentini range, which is 5,446’ above sea level. There was no enemy activity in the area, and a search failed to identify the crash site. The mountain terrain was very rough making the search all but impossible. Dewey was declared non-recoverable by American Graves Registration Service (AGRS) in 1948. The family never gave up on locating Dewey’s remains. After turning down many scam artists who just wanted the family’s money, Nora Messick, Dewey’s great niece, put in years of research to find out where his remains were located. During that process she found out about The Defense POW/ MIA Accounting Agency, which works to help families find their loved ones lost at war. They put her in touch with a group of Italian historians, Association Salerno 1943, who would end up finding Dewey’s remains. Initially, the Salerno 1943 volunteers had been contacted by a U.S. Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) agent in Italy who requested they do everything possible to locate Dewey’s remains in order that they might be returned to his family in the United States. Salerno 1943 researchers promptly began looking for the plane’s point of impact. At first they were unable to find evidence. The first civilians on the scene, probably in the spring of 1944, might have encountered only aircraft wreckage. The body of the pilot likely would have been torn apart by wild animals. This made the search for

Dewey’s remains more complicated. After they found some pieces of the plane, they had to go back three or four times before they found Dewey’s remains. DNA from family members proved the remains were Dewey’s. Dewey was returned to the US on Thursday, April 7th at the Greenville/Spartanburg Airport. He was buried with full military honors on April 11th at the Fort Prince Memorial Gardens in Wellford, SC. I was notified about the Patriot Guard Mission to render honors at the funeral service. When I arrived, I parked along the back road with a few other bikes. The ride captain was well aware of Dewey’s history, and was telling us all about him and his family. More and more bikes arrived. There were a number of cars parking on the gravel road in the back. That was when I realized that it wasn’t going to be a small event. Dewey’s family has a lot of friends that want to honor him. We set up a flag line around the tent. The honor guard, and trumpeter were in uniform – at the ready. We heard sirens, and the hearse arrived with a police escort and ten bikers with large flags flying. The family arrived in a couple limousines but didn’t sit under the tent. They all stood on the side of the tent waiting for the fly-over before starting the service. It seemed like a long wait until we heard the roar of four Air Force jet fighters approaching at a very low altitude. When they were directly overhead, one fighter went straight up to the heavens while the other three flew straight leaving his place open. It’s called a Missing Man Formation. It is the highest honor the Air Force can pay to a fallen comrade. Then the service started, the honor guard fired three volleys and then the young lady played taps on her trumpet. They folded the flag that was draped over the casket, and then gave it to the family. It was a very moving ceremony, and I was honored to be part of it. We said our good-byes, and I left – until the next PGR Mission.

VEMA Fallen Officer Poker Run By: Bryan Rupple On Saturday, 9 April 2016, Veteran Enforcers Motorcycle Association hosted a Fallen Officer Poker Run at Harley-Davison of New Bern. The Veteran Enforcers Motorcycle Association (V.E.M.A.) is a military and public safety association consisting of members who share the passion of motorcycling. Our membership has answered the call to duty and has dedicated their lives to being of service to our country and communities. We accomplish our mission by supporting and organizing charitable events and functions that raise awareness to the sacrifices our brothers and sisters have made in service to our country and communities. Over 70 riders and passengers braved the chilly morning and wind gusts of 30-40 mph. The event route took them from New Bern through Havelock, Newport, Morehead City, and Beaufort then returned them back to New Bern. The goal of the event was to honor police officers that have lost their lives in the line of duty and to assist students of the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program accomplish their goal of becoming a police officer. This year’s event raised $1400 that will be donated to the Fallen Officer Memorial Scholarship at Craven Community College. VEMA created this scholarship in 2015 to assist students enrolled in the BLET purchase books and uniforms. Well Known Tavern Opens Again By: Rick Gammons Normally, I think of April 9th as warm and sunny. Not this year! Sunny, yes, but Peggy and I froze our butts off as we headed out for JR’s Tavern located at 901 Greensboro Road in High Point, NC. This was the date of their Grand Reopening. Now, most people in the High Point area of North Carolina know JR’s Tavern. Some say it has been around for about 60 years. Over the years, age had begun to claim it. By: Rose and Lloyd On March 17th the biker family lost a true brother, George Patrick Baxley. Few called him Patrick, but friends knew him as “Cornbread” a name endeared only to him. He always welcomed you with a huge smile and a hug. He was well known in the biker family for his musical talent. He played in several bands and was best remembered for Groove Thing. Later he became well known as Acoustic Cornbread and recorded and played under that name. He taught his sons, Zachary and Sam, his love of communication through music. His young daughter, Aislyn, was much to young to learn to play, but one can only imagine the beautiful lullabies that he sang to her. Cornbread will always be remembered as we ride expecting him to come riding up with his “skid lid” helmet, his leather vest, and awesome smile. He was always ready to help out any charity. There was a celebration of life held March 22nd at Southern Sisters Restaurant and Grille. I know at least 300 bikers came through that night to pay their respects and say a final goodbye. I enjoyed hearing the many stories of his life. Cornbread, you are, and will always be, forever missed.

Home Town Hawgs has everything you need from a great used bike to parts and service to custom paint and more. Danny Bollinger, owner, was in the car business for years. He grew that into a respectable operation and was ready for the next step. “After mastering the car business to the point where we had the service, body shop, and such going well, we started looking at more ways to serve the Hickory area,” Danny said. “We saw an opportunity since there are no large full-service independent shops around here. We didn’t just pop up as some new guys wanting to get in on motorcycle popularity.” The guys you will deal with at Home Town Hawgs; Danny, Chris Johnson, and Lucky Brooks have long histories of riding and being involved in the biker lifestyle. They know how to take care of you. “I had considered becoming a franchised brand dealer,” Danny said. “That would mean dealing with more partners and their rules. Since I had a love and passion for motorcycles and a big show room, I decided to stay independent and got into the used Harley market.” Cool motorcycles parked out front get your attention and make you stop to find out, “How much is that one?” Bikes at Home Town Hawgs come from several sources. “Our inventory mostly comes from Harley auctions,” Danny said. “Many are well maintained, low-mile repos. The rest come from trades or bikes that we buy from folks or consignments. If we can’t make a deal on a trade for your Harley, we might buy your Harley even if you don’t buy from us.” “We make sure buyers get a great bike at Home Town Hawgs,” Chris said. “The bikes get a 60-point inspection in our shop and the fluids are changed. Some of the motorcycles we sell still have factory warrantees. Most of the rest we can provide warrantees for. We have multiple options for financing, and everybody can ride home on a nice bike.” Home Town Hawgs does much more than just sell you a motorcycle. “We have a full-service shop that can do everything

from basic service and maintenance to major repair,” Danny said. “We have a dedicated full-time parts and service writer. All of us can order and get just about anything you want for any kind of bike. Our service department can work on anything from old Harleys to new imports. All brands, all makes, all years are welcome. We also have a five-man paint crew who can do everything from simple repair to insurance work to custom paint.” If you love your current bike, but want to customize it, stop in at Home Town Hawgs and see Chris. He can hook you up with a custom fairing, tanks, bags, front ends, pipes, and more. “We are not an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer or repair facility. Home Town Hawgs is totally independent. We may be growing into a bigger business, but we are still local boys and will always have a small hometown heart. The Myrtle Beach Bike Week Skinny By: Everette “EZ” Short If you’re here for MBBW 2016, then you can head south to the two locations to sit on your bike, sit in a rocking chair, sit in traffic or walk around to see what you’ve seen for years. Or you can head out and ride to new places that are eager to see you, soft on the wallet, and you can usually see your bike from where you’re drinking. If you’re still holding a grudge against the city, then I’ll drink one for you. First to the top of the north end in Little River, stop by 17 Customs to visit with world famous builder Scott Britt and his amazing crew at 724 Hwy 17 next to McDonalds. Scott has an amazing collection of bikes worth smokin’ over and a lot of them are even for sale. While you’re up there, take a short ride north to Beach House Harley-Davidson in Shallotte, NC. They will have the H-D Demo Fleet (May 19-21), a 50% off end of season MotorClothes sale, vendors, and a cool customer lounge upstairs with free pool. You will need a helmet to ride in NC, but it will be worth it to visit this beautiful dealership. On the way back to MBBW, The Swingbridge Saloon, located at 4355 Sea Mountain Hwy, is open 7 days a week, with live bands at night and karaoke outside in the Tiki Bar for the afternoon and early evening. They’re well known for their annual WELCOME HOME party on Wednesday with a pig pickin’ there, too. And just around the corner, at 11794 Hwy 90, is Beach Customs, who will be hosting Dyno Days with RC Components on sight for your pleasure as well. On your way south on King’s Highway, turn right at the giant shark’s head, there is an amazing place to visit called Boardwalk Billy’s at 1407 13th Ave. North in NMB. Boardwalk Billy’s has an amazing happy hour, plenty of visible bike parking, huge steaks, fresh seafood, burgers, Sushi, games out back and a stunning view of the marina. Further down King’s Highway you’ll find NMB Harley-Davidson’s giant tent sale at their Shop At The Beach located at 4202 Hwy #17 South, just before Barefoot Landing. Once you get into Myrtle Beach proper, stop by a biker owned and run bar called Barnacle Bills at 405 8th Ave. North, across from the Zipline (where the Pavilion used to be). Check out their roadside deck, where you can eat, drink, watch the traffic go by, and sit right in front of your motorcycle while you down a brew or two, without being told to move along.

Just up the street, stop by PPM Custom, off the #501 at 1460 Cannon Road, and get a $29.99 oil change (WHO DOES THAT ANYMORE?). Don’t forget, Comfort Suites is just down the road off #501 at 710 Frontage Road, just before the bypass. They are biker friendly and have all the comforts of home, with a pool, at a good price. When you make your way south on the #17 bi-pass, be sure to get off at the #707 exit and turn right to The Rat Hole of Myrtle Beach at 3833 Socastee Boulevard (Hwy #707), a motorcycle playground. They have outdoor motorcycle field games and fun full into the night that runs 7 days a week with their new old west style saloon pouring ‘em hot and cold all night long. If you don’t find a laugh when you’re there, then your funny bone is broken. Just a ways from there, at 4710 Kings Hwy, you can find the Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson Main Store with vendors, food, fun, music, and prizes. Oh, and there’s always a lot of HD to spectate at in this place. Further south, stop in at Patty’s Dew Drop Inn, located just off Hwy #544 and Kings Highway #17, at 1268 Surfside Industrial Road, behind Dick’s Pawn. 9th Annual Ft. Bragg H-D Freedom Biker Church Chili Cook-Off By: Jody and Pam Shotwell February 27th was the date for the 9th Annual Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson/Freedom Biker Church Chili Cook-Off. It was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the low 50’s by the start of the chili tasting extravaganza. Green Nights Chapter 61, Chicken’s Road Kill Chili, Psycho-Delec, Celebrate Recovery Team, Bruce’s Great Chili, Larrimore, Germanrican, Magic Mike’s Chili, Wild West, Fire In the Hole, Crystal, Fat Baby Chili, Team 92 and D’Z BBQ were ready to serve their best chili. D.J. Scott James was blasting some great tunes while approximately 194 taste testing judges were sampling some of Cumberland County’s finest chili. On the other end of the line was the Freedom Biker Church Iron Angels Bake Sale with homemade cakes, fudge, brownies, and cookies. No one could resist chili and desserts.

When all the taste testing was done each judge got to vote on their “favorite chili” from the fourteen chili entries and the winners were announced. The third place trophy, a medallion, a $25 H-D gift card, and $25 cash went to Bo Rhoden’s “Green Knights Chapter 61” team. Second place trophy, a medallion, a $50 H-D gift card, and $50 cash went to Chick’s team “Chicken’s Road Kill Chili.” The 2016 Champion was Kathy Page’s “Bruce’s Great Chili” team. They received the First Place Trophy, a medallion, a $100 H-D gift card, and $100 cash. In addition to the “Best Chili” trophies, there were three other awards. Smokin’ Hot Award went to Perry Harrison’s “Fire in the Hole” team for the hottest chili. Time On Your Hands Award went to Michelle Sweatt’s “Psycho-Delec” team for the best display. The I ATE WHAT? award went to Chick’s “Chicken’s Road Kill Chili” team for the most original chili. This year Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson added a Car and Bike Show. They were both judged together and Stuart Bryant got 3rd Place and a $25 H-D Gift Card for “Ruby” his ember red and merlot 2012 Ultra Classic Limited. Joe Cox got 2nd Place and a $50 H-D Gift Card for his red 1968 C-10 Chevy truck. First Place and a $100 H-D Gift Card went to Ricky Britt for his black 1968 Chevelle. 43rd Annual CBA Spring Swap Meet & Bike Show By:WildThing After 43 swap meets, you gotta know that the Charlotte Chapter of Concerned Bikers Association have got it under control! I think they could do it blindfolded. No, not really, this swap meet and bike show is a huge endeavor with lots of volunteers coordinating the various vendors and activities. But I do congratulate them; they have done a great job over the years. This spring show was the last at the Metrolina Expo on Statesville Road in Charlotte. The Expo grounds will be developed into something new and the Swap Meet is moving to the Rowan County Fairgrounds located on Julian Rd, I-85 Exit 74, in Salisbury NC next fall. The weather was warm enough to go without a jacket. There were lots of outside vendors, many were located under huge white tents and offered thousands of parts and accessories for sale. Also, some were set up in the open air while others preferred to set up inside the several buildings. There was a vast assortment of riding gear, leather goods, take-off parts, fenders and tanks, as well as jewelry, flags, patches, t-shirts, and you name it. Lots of times the vendors will haggle prices with you, so be sure and get the best deal. Inside the main building, a stage was set up and Cassius Fury was scheduled to rock the crowd throughout the weekend. And, lo and behold, the bar was set up right in front of the stage! The CBA was also set up right in front of the stage. They were explaining their mission and soliciting new members. The rest of the building was vendor booths and a snack bar. There was truly something for everyone with a tattoo contest, wet t-shirt contest, a bike show, with cash prizes no

As a crowded airliner is about to take off, the peace is shattered by a 5 year-old boy who picks that moment to throw a wild temper tantrum. No matter what his frustrated, embarrassed mother does to try to calm him down, the boy continues to scream furiously and kick the seats around him. Suddenly, from the rear of the plane, an elderly man in the uniform of an Air Force General is seen slowly walking forward up the aisle. Stopping the flustered mother with an upraised hand, the white-haired, courtly, soft-spoken General leans down and, motioning toward his chest, whispers something into the boy’s ear. Instantly, the boy calms down, gently takes his mother’s hand, and quietly fastens his seat belt. All the other passengers burst into spontaneous applause. As the General slowly makes his way back to his set, one of the cabin attendants touches his sleeve. “Excuse me, General,” she asks quietly, “but could I ask you what magic words you used on that little boy?” The old man smiles serenely and gently confides, “I showed him my pilot’s wings, service stars, and battle ribbons, and explained that they entitle me to throw one passenger out the plane door on any flight I choose.” A cop is staking out the Gone Hog Wild Bar for bikers riding drunk. At closing time, he sees a biker stumble out of the bar, trip on the curb, and fumble for his keys for five minutes. When he finally gets on the bike, it takes him another five minutes to get the key in the ignition. Meanwhile, everybody else leaves the bar and rides off. When he finally pulls away, the cop is waiting for him, pulls him over, and gives him a Breathalyzer test. The test shows he has a blood alcohol level of 0.0. The cop says, “How is this possible?” The guy laughs and says, “Tonight, I’m the designated decoy.” Two crocodiles were sitting at the side of the swamp near the lake. The smaller one turned to the bigger one and said, “I can’t understand

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel plans. So, the husband left Minneapolis and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email. Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to Glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read: To: My loving wife, I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then. Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was. P.S. Sure is hot down here!

Several centuries ago, the Pope decreed that all Muslims had to convert to Catholicism or leave Italy. There was a huge outcry from the Muslim community, so the Pope offered a deal. He’d have a religious debate with the leader of the Muslim community. If the Muslims won, they could stay in Italy and if the Pope won, they’d have to convert or leave. The Muslim people met and picked an aged and wise Mufti to represent them in the debate. However, as the Mufti spoke no Italian, and the Pope spoke no Arabic, they agreed that it would be a “silent” debate. On the chosen day the Pope and Mufti sat opposite each other. The Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. The Mufti looked back and raised one finger. Next, the Pope waved his finger around his head. The Mufti pointed to the ground where he sat. The Pope brought out a communion wafer and a chalice of wine. The Mufti pulled out an apple. With that, the Pope stood up and declared himself beaten and said that the Mufti was too clever. The Muslims could stay in Italy. Later the cardinals met with the Pope and asked him what had happened. The Pope said, “First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity.” He responded by holding up a single finger to remind me there is still only one God!” Then, I waved my finger around my head to show him that God was all around us.” He responded by pointing to the ground to show that God was also right here with us.” I pulled out the wine and wafer to show that God absolves us of all our sins.” He pulled out an apple to remind me of the original sin.” He beat me at every move and I could not continue!” Meanwhile, the Muslim community gathered to ask the Mufti how he’d won.” I haven’t a clue,” the Mufti said.” First, he told me that we had three days to get out of Italy, so I gave him the finger. Then he tells me that the whole country would be cleared of Muslims and I told him that we were staying right here!” “And then what?” asked a woman. “Who knows?” said the Mufti. “He took out his lunch so I took out mine.”

6th Annual Biker Bluegrass Festival By: Everette “EZ” Short First of all, let me tell you that there was plenty of pickin’ and grinnin, cloggin’ and kickin’, dogs barkin’ over the sound of revving engines, loud shoutin’ yeehaw dancing folks and a whirlwind festival on the back lot of the Myrtle Beach HarleyDavison Main Store for the 6th Annual Biker Bluegrass Festival on Saturday March 19th. The hoopla started early, with warm sunshine and a cool ton of old school scooters showing up, alongside classic cars, modern customs, trikes, and motorized thingamajigs that defy description to join in this family friendly event. There was live music from several bands all throughout the day from Alan Bibey & Commonground, Sawgrass and a band named Subject To Change. Then, there was the clogging finding their grove with ALL THAT Cloggers, stompin’ and hooting on the blacktop with vigor. To say it was a kickin’ day, would be an understatement. Meanwhile, in the background, Waccamaw Animal Rescue Mission (W.A.R.M.) ran a nefarious campaign to flood our hearts with the gorgeous four legged friends that they were hustling for a new home. There is no big, hardhearted biker that I have ever met that can resist the eyes of a pup in a cage. This was a no fail plan to get these critters adopted and it worked. W.A.R.M. raised over $4300 that day to help sheltered animals to get adopted. The show definitely had a fun, family atmosphere going for it. Between the bright

sunshine, gentle sea breeze, and short sleeve temperatures, the day was ripe for some good bluegrass twang. I even thought I might have seen a jar or two of some fine southern shine being passed around, but it might have just been some sweet water shared among friends. And while I’m on the subject of things that are sweet, it’s getting nice out for riding, so stop by the Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson Main Store or their Shop At The Beach in North Myrtle Beach to check out the new line of hogs, sleds, choppers, baggers, trikes, clothes, and such what not, next time you’re out near there. Even if you don’t actually have a sled, they can rent you one for a few hours, a day, or a week. Let’s face it, when you get to the beach, there’s nothing like rolling down the coast with the wind in your face. So get you some of that while it’s still legal! Cherokee Cycles Indian Demo Rides

By: Bill Gallaway On Friday and Saturday, April 8th & 9th, Cherokee Cycles of Greer, SC held a demo event in conjunction with Indian Motorcycles. The weather was beautiful and sunny, however, cool and windy for the entire event. Temps were in the high 50’s and the gusty winds made riding exciting, so I was told. This was the first demo event where I didn’t actually ride. I’m in the recovery stage of a serious infection and the combination of antibiotic fusion drips and lack of energy has made it unwise to get on two wheels. So with that said those that did ride the demo bikes seemed to enjoy themselves. They not only rode once but several times during the day riding a different Indian model each time. I spent my day taking pictures and talking with the riders, who liked what they rode. There was something for everyone, from the Scouts to the Chief Dark Horse to the Indian Roadmaster. The Indian demo truck had brought them all. Cherokee Cycles was proud to show off their new addition to the dealership with the new Polaris Room. This room contained three and four wheel vehicles. There were Slingshots and 4 x 4 ATV’s in the new Polaris Room. The main showroom was packed with some of the shiniest chrome I’ve ever seen on two wheels. Indians were on one side and Victorys were on the other, and many folks wandered around with their tongues hanging out. There were also repre-

sentatives from the Indian Motorcycles Riders Group #1936 on hand to discuss membership and riding opportunities for Indian owners. If you hung around late on Saturday, you were able to see the band and sit around the bonfire to stay warm. I left way before that took place but enjoyed the time I did spend at Cherokee Cycles. Fort Bragg All American Weekend By: Christine Montgomery May 8, 2015 Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson held its first annual All American Weekend. It was a three-day event that kicked off Myrtle Beach Bike Week, as well as All American Week in Fayetteville. We promoted this as a thank you to all service men and women as well as our customers. This free event was open to the public and hosted a full itinerary of fun for all ages. We had a wide variety of food trucks, as well as over 30 vendors on site with anything from corn hole boards, to tattoo shops. We opened our weekend with an evening concert with Liquid Pleasure. These crowd pleasers had a fantastic show with lots of costumes and dancing. The main attraction was the American Motor Drome Wall Of Death Thrillshow doing hourly stunt shows. We had something to appeal to every age. For the little ones we had the climbing place with three different walls, bounce houses, and costumed super heroes posing for pictures. For the adult crowd we were pleased to have R.A. Jefferys Distributing Company with a huge variety of beer, sponsored

by Legend’s Pub. Among all the vendors, and shows we also hosted Cape Beard with their annual beard and mustache contest on May 9th. They really embraced our community, even fabricating the trophies out of old motorcycle parts. Also, that day we raffled off a brand new 2015 wide glide. The Bourinqueneers MC, One of our local clubs, hosted this raffle. May 9th closed with our major headliner band LOCASH performing a free concert in the dealership. We were very fortunate to be as successful as we were our first full year in operation as Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson, and spared no expense in this party for our community. There were of course some hiccups along the way, to include a freak hurricane that weekend here, which no one would have seen coming, but that did not dampen anyone’s spirits or keep the crowd from coming out and having a blast. The weekend closed with Mother’s Day. We had some easy listening and roses for all our mothers out there. Due to the unforeseen weather the ride, lead by our HOG Chapter to Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week, was reluctantly cancelled for safety reasons. This year we look forward to having our 2nd Annual All American Weekend, May 21st-22nd. We are expanding on what we started and this year we will be adding a custom bike show, as well as a dyno shoot out. Our main attraction this year will be the Ives Brother’s Wall Of Death and steel Globe Of Death. We look forward to kicking off our year right, and going all out for our community. The Blessing Of The Bikes On The Beach 2016 By: Everette “EZ” Short It seems like it hasn’t stopped raining on any of our recent events held in South Carolina, since I don’t know when. On the Saturday before The Blessing Of The Bikes On The Beach 2016, the heavens opened up to drench the south coast with torrential cloudbursts that were punctuated by intense thunder and lightning shows that lasted all night long. Then, as if to show us all how quickly life and the world can be turned around, the sun rose in full splendor the very next day to give a big thumbs up for this heartfelt family event. On Sunday, April 3rd, over 400 riders and cohorts showed up for The Blessing Of The Bikes On The Beach 2016, under Carolina blue skies with temperatures in the low 70s. In other words, it was a perfect day to ride and count our blessings that warmly greeted us when we came together in the back lot of the Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson main store at 4710 South Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach, SC. I was busy roaming the ever expanding crowd, photographing everyone, shaking hands, getting big bear hugs, and trying to remember everyone by name when Jaesen Moore, the insanely charismatic lead singer from a local band called The IZM, let out a growling “Ohhhhhh” from deep within the PA system that made us all turn to feel the words by the time he let out, “Sayyyyyyy... can you seeeeeee... by the dawn’s early

light?” At that point, the crowd had been a roaring mass of loud biker noise. Suddenly, the silence was deafening. When Jaeson took that mic, he stirred every soul on that pavement. I didn’t see one person that didn’t reach for their heart with their hand while taking their covers off in tribute to our national anthem. This man rolled out that song with courage and conviction in his voice, and more grace and power than I have ever heard at ANY sporting event, EVER. By the time he had closed the final note, there were several big men openly wiping tears from their eyes and cheering. Then, Pastor Sam Hambrick, AKA Sasquatch, from The Sons of God MC took the mic to tell us about Courageous Kidz (www.CourageousKidz.org), a charitable organization that helps children with cancer and terminal illness. Then he brought little John Luscko, a courageous, young cancer survivor, to the front of the tents for a resounding chorus of applause. As Pastor Sam lead us in prayer, members of the SOG went bike-to-bike anointing each bike with oils and prayers. Members of our local charity group, Under The Wings Of An Angel, also helped out with management of the event, parking, good cheer, and fund raising. All too soon, it was done and we were headed south down King’s Hwy to The Beaver Bar for a BBQ feast, prizes, and a concert from one of the best bands on the beach: Eric Ness and Power Born Rebellion. In the end, we raised over $2,000 to benefit Courageous Kidz for local children with cancer and everyone I spoke to said the same thing, that we all felt blessed. We are truly blessed to live in a country where we are free. We are still free to ride, to openly praise God and to have such a great community of people so willing to give freely to others. By: Wally Wersching On Saturday, March 19th, the “Guardians Of The Children” (Cleveland County) and the “Communities In Schools” scheduled their first annual “Prayer Around The Flagpoles” where the group goes to many of the schools in Cleveland County, and prays around the school’s flagpole. Both organizations are dedicated to helping the youth of Cleveland County, and the rally was a way to show support, and bring their goals to the forefront along with raising money for their causes. The “Guardians Of The Children” is an organization whose vision is to improve the quality of life in our community by educating the public, and making them aware of the steps to take in order to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to the reality of child abuse. Many members are bikers who wear their colors (leather vests with their emblem on the back) proudly. The “Communities In Schools” is an organization where increased attendance, improved behavior, and satisfactory coursework, in addition to parent and family engagement, are the focus areas guiding their work. Their school-based Student Support Specialists identify students in danger of not achieving their potential. They assess the student’s needs, provide

interventions, and use necessary resources to make the changes. The best laid plans don’t always go as planned. The weather on Saturday was threatening with rain predicted in the area, so it was decided to delay the event for one day, and hold it on Sunday. When Sunday morning came, it was about 20 degrees colder than Saturday but no rain in the forecast. There was another downside to having it on Sunday morning – most of the people who would have attended on Saturday from the local biker ministries couldn’t make it because they were in church. The first event always has a few glitches in it. I’m sure that next year, it will be much larger. I left home dressed for the cold, and arrived at Crest High School about 10:30AM. I wanted to learn more about the “Guardians of the Children”, and what they were trying to accomplish. I spoke with the president of the group as they were getting ready to start. They are a very dedicated group that has the children of Cleveland County in their hearts. I walked with them as they encircled the flagpole, and prayed. This is what they would do at every school they rode to. There would be food and drinks at the end of the ride. I was sorry that I couldn’t ride with them. I wished them a safe ride. It certainly is nice riding weather. It’s a new season. Springtime is the favorite of a lot of folks because nature brings forth new flowers and leaves on the trees. The birds returning, animals giving birth, and countless other new beginnings come with spring. Then for some of us there’s that new bike! Not for all of us, but that’s OK. Here are a few examples of what the word of God calls new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things are passed away; behold, all things become new”. Revelation 21:2 “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven”. Revelation 21:5 says “And He that sat upon the throne said, behold I will make all things new”. Ezekiel spoke several times of a new spirit and a new heart. Do you feel the need for something new? Have you tried all the world has to offer but cannot find newness? Many of us in the past have tried new things to overcome life’s problems. Many have failed. As we at His Laboring Few Biker Ministry say, “Jesus loves bikers too”. I challenge you who are searching for a new beginning, look to Jesus. His word says if we believe in our hearts that Jesus is lord and confess our sins, he will make us “new”. Vet-Fest 2016

By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, March 19th was the date for the 8th Annual Vet-Fest. The weather was partly cloudy with temps in the high 60’s. The Vet-Fest is held annually to help support the Oconee Veteran’s Museum in Walhalla, SC. All Veterans are honored during the event and there is always a lot of camaraderie among the participants. I arrived at Patriot’s Hall at 10:30 to help set up and put out the signs to help riders find the start if it happened to be their first time attending. Most likely you could follow any motorcycle in the area and wind up at Patriot’s Hall on this particular Saturday morning. As I was setting up the signs to the event a group from the local CMA arrived and it wasn’t long until other riders began to show up and register. I was working one of the stops so I couldn’t hang around for the start. I did make it back for the awards ceremony that started at 4:00 pm and participated in the silent auction. Most everyone walked away with a prize of some sort, but the real awards went to the Veterans that were recognized and to Patriot’s Hall, which honors our Veterans on a daily basis.

By: Uwharrie Charlie What a great person to have a benefit for. Angela Heilig McDaniel was known by many as Big Red and had a multitude of friends and loved ones. It showed by the many people that showed up the day of the benefit. It was supposed to be a benefit run, but with dark clouds in the sky and temperatures around 55º kept a lot of bikes in the garage. Despite that, a lot of those riders showed up anyway by whatever means necessary. To my knowledge, I never met Big Red, but I could see and feel the love for her in this crowd. Everyone I spoke to shared an interesting story about the time they spent with her. There isn’t enough room to put those stories in this article, but just let me say that Big Red must have been a fun-loving soul full of ambition and character. She had a hard struggle with cancer and eventually lost her life because of it. It’s the silent disease that no one can seem to cure. It didn’t just affect her but many around her, the family and friends that loved her so. She is missed by many and memories of her will be long remembered. RIP Big Red. The benefit was held at The Carriage Room in Salisbury, NC and hosted by the owner Valerie Cook. Val, along with many other people, put a lot of time and energy into making this a successful event. A list of known family members and special friends included: Connie Spry, Valerie Cook, Angela Morton DeAascentis (Amazon), Popcorn, Andrea Morgan, Noodle Gallimore, Doug, Lindsey Summer (Daughter), Lonie Ashby, Mike McDaniel, Johnathon McDaniel, and Buttercup, along with many more.

Many donations were given for this benefit from Budweiser, Tilley Harley-Davidson, Olive Garden, Lisa Fraley, Longhorn Steakhouse, The Carriage Room, Bea Hartman Thompson, United Beverage, Ivey Vertch, Apple Baking Company and “Crazy” Kevin Powell Motorsports! Much thanks to these people and business that provided their respective time/products/money. Tell them thank you next time you’re in one of these businesses. I am sure that they will appreciate it! The establishments that donated time, effort and designated stops for the Benefit Run were: The Carriage Room, The Buccaneer Lounge, Tamarac Marina, and Stars And Bars Tavern. Thanks to everyone not mentioned also. An auction was held as well as a 50/50 and give-away items. My favorite was the BBQ Chicken plates cooked by Noodle Gallimore. They were awesome. Many thanks go out to Noodle and his volunteers! Let’s not forget The Brent Brown & Company Band who provided great tunes for the event. They are a band worth seeing time and again, they really rock! Everyone had a blast at the Carriage Room that day. May God bless Big Red and give her peace and comfort. She will be missed dearly. RIP Big Red. We’ll see you on the other side some day. Tour Of Honor 2016 By: Star The Tour Of Honor 2016 flyer beckons you to ride. It calls to riders asking us to ride for the destination, for the journey, for the joy, and for the higher purpose. The enticing invitation reads, “Tour Of Honor. 50 States. 500 Memorials. You, your motorcycle, and a good reason to ride”. Tour Of Honor 2016 is a self-directed ride that may be completed in any sequence, any time between April 01 and Oct 31. Though most of us will not be able to do the “dream-inspiring” cross-country ride because we still work jobs on weekdays, the mind instantly starts racing, planning, endorphins flowing, I will join, I will ride, I will pay my respects, I will do the Tour Of Honor. I have done it before, and I look forward to doing it again, but this time in my new home, North Carolina. In 2015 I travelled from top to the bottom of Florida visiting seven monuments for this purpose. It is with great enthusiasm that I imagine what 2016 will hold as I ride new roads, see new sites, and explore beautiful new surroundings, but with a familiar Patriotic purpose in my heart and mind. Support The Recognizing The Protection Of Motorsports Act Of 2016 http://americanmotorcyclist.com/rights/issueslegislation Members of both chambers of Congress have introduced versions of a bill that would prevent the US Environmental Protection Agency from regulating the conversion of street motorcycles and other motor vehicles into competitiononly racers. The EPA failed to provide proper notice of this regulation, including it in an unrelated heavy-duty-truck regulation. The proposed rule would hurt thousands of amateur and professional motorcycle racing enthusiasts and the millions of fans who enjoy motorcycle competition. The bi-partisan Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016 (H.R. 4715 and S. 2659, RPM Act) would ensure that converting motor vehicles into competition-only vehicles remains legal. Street motorcycles are considered motor vehicles under the Clean Air Act. The RPM Act was introduced in the House by U.S. Reps. We Got Tank Stoned Story and photo by Alan Dockery The middle Saturday of April was a beautiful day to ride, hang out with friends, and get Tank stoned. It seemed like most the bikers in Hickory, NC, turned out for the Hickory Riding Club’s poker run to buy a headstone for Tank’s gravesite. Steven Ray Lingle was a well-known and loved local biker who died in a crash with a car about a year and a half ago. We didn’t go for a long ride that day. Just old fashioned bar hoping around town. Ride a little, have a cold one with friends and tell stories about Tank. Got back to the clubhouse in time for some great BBQ chicken and delicious pot luck supper. I think everybody who won donated back to the cause. Tank liked calling his Grandmother for long talks. His Mom, Barbara, was there and will forever hold Tank close to her heart, but she knows he is with his Heavenly Father. His sister Carrie could tell you how he loved the mountains, Johns River, and playing his Grandpa’s guitar and singing. “We played more than 230 hands and raised more than

That’s Not A Lock…THIS Is A Lock! Part 2 ABUS Granit WBA 100 Ground & Wall Anchor By Buzz: In the March 2016 issue (#212) I wrote about he ABUS Granite Extreme Motorcycle chain lock. Like many locks the ABUS Granite Extreme Motorcycle chain lock makes it possible to attach a bike to a fixed point, to provide better protection against theft. Unfortunately, there are not always strong objects available to which they can be attached. ABUS offers various anchoring solutions that provide a very strong fixture on the floor or wall of your property. These high-quality security solutions provide a point of attachment that is just as strong as the lock itself. After I wrote the article on the chain lock I set aside an afternoon to install the impressive ABUS Granit WBA 100 Ground & Wall Anchor where I park my bike in my carport. I opened the package and was immediately impressed by the stout appearance of the WBA 100 Ground Anchor, but that was just the tip of the iceberg! First step was to drill into the concrete floor of my carport for the four 4” anchors. The drilling was the only chore to the entire project. I placed the anchor bracket where I wanted it and marked where I needed to drill. Once the holes were drilled and the cussing was over (anyone who has had to drill concrete will understand),

I tapped the anchors into place with a hammer. Then I placed the temper hardened steel base plate over the anchors and secured it using the anchor bolts. ABUS provides ball bearings to hammer into the bolt heads to make the bolts impossible to remove. Lastly we bolted the plastic cover over the baseplate. The cover is ramped so that you can drive over it if necessary. Once installed, I pulled my bike into the carport, secured the ABUS Granite Extreme Motorcycle chain lock around the frame of my bike and through the ABUS Granit WBA 100 Ground & Wall Anchor’s massive 16mm shackle, and smiled knowing that NOBODY was going to roll away with my baby! Start to finish, the ABUS Granit WBA 100 Ground & Wall Anchor took just over an hour to install. All ABUS locks are made of temper hardened steel but the WBA 100 Ground & Wall Anchor takes this even further by using a special steel that is self hardening, meaning that as it heats under a cutting attack it actually gets harder, further increasing the time it takes to defeat it.
