hhh November, the beginning of the holiday season, marking the end of warm weather motorcycle events. Looking forward to the cool season events to ride to and the ever-present threat of inclement weather impacting our best laid plans. Check out The Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for the line-up of food drives, benefit rides, and toy runs scattered all over the Carolinas. Ride where your heart takes you, there seems to be a lot of need out there, especially with the hurricanes this fall that have affected many areas and many families. There is no shortage of fall events to ride your motorcycle to attend. There are bike shows, open houses, and swap meets. The granddaddy of swap meets in the Carolinas is the Charlotte CBA Swap Meet and Bike Show at the Rowan County Fairgrounds November 10 & 11. This is a rain or shine event, so come on out and be prepared to have a great time and pick up on that elusive part or accessory you have been wanting. November is a significant month for a number of reasons. It starts out with Election Day on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of the month. I remember going to the polls with my parents back in the day and that started a lifetime of commitment for me. I believe voting makes America the best there ever was. Next comes Veteran’s Day on November 11. This is a time when we appreciate the commitment of our military men and women down through the years and the wars, another fact that makes America the best there ever was. So, wear a poppy, participate in a parade or celebration, or just say ‘Thank You’ to your neighborhood vet. Then there is Thanksgiving. Another uniquely American holiday. Yes, America isn’t perfect, but we have a lot to be thankful for: family, friends, freedom. We wish all the Full Throttle Family a wonderful Thanksgiving, celebrating the blessings of 2018, reflecting on the trials, and planning a better tomorrow. As always, ride safe.

HazEy Thoughts

By: Ed Cleary Photos: Lincoln Infield One of the most stunning exhibits at this year’s Capital City Bikefest was the custom-built chopper known as “Hazy Thoughts”. At 11 feet in length, and weighing in at around 700 pounds, this monster is just the latest in a long line of custom built motorcycles to come out of the Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair shop in Rougemont, NC. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Hank Thibodeau, owner and builder at Widowmaker, to discuss his latest creation. To say that Hank is passionate about motorcycles is an understatement. The one hour that I had originally planned on spending with Hank easily stretched into three, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! When I asked Hank to tell me a little about “Hazy Thoughts”, the feature of this month’s cover, he sort of rolled his eyes a little and said that it was the most challenging project that he had ever undertaken at that point. “The project began back in 2012”, said Hank. When a gentleman walked into the shop with a vision of a bike he wanted to build. The client went on to tell Hank that as a boy growing up his father had owned several choppers and he wanted something bigger than life like he remembered his father to have had. So, Hank worked with the customer to hammer out the details of exactly what he was looking for, and the build was on.

Hank recommended using the Ultima 107 EVO engine and 6 speed RSD transmission and a 3.35” drag style open belt primary for the power to move this monster. “Bang for the buck, it’s a great motor” said Hank. With the motor in hand and waiting for a frame, the customer searched for one that would get him close to what he wanted and would fit his budget. He located a PMC rolling chassis that was close enough to fit the needs of the build. The frame, was not only not long enough for the client’s vision but also was built for a twin drivetrain. So, Hank had to fabricate new mounting brackets to accommodate the EVO motor and transmission. Next, came the forks. The fame was built with a 45-degree fork angle but in order to achieve the extreme length the customer desired the forks needed to be mounted at a 67-degree angle. Hank cut and rebuilt the frame accordingly. The original forks selected by the customer proved to have too much weight (as they were 6 ½ feet long), allowing them to twist and flex. Hank reached out to American Suspension and a custom D-66 Dragon springer was made for the bike. Now with the rake and trail Continued On Page 40

Motorcycle Fatalities Declined Nationwide In 2017

By: Matt Danielson n Wednesday, October 3rd, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released its preliminary report on 2017 traffic fatalities. After two consecutive years of rising fatalities, 2017 saw a 1.1% decrease nationwide in overall traffic fatalities. Motorcycle fatalities, which also increased in both 2015 and 2016, saw a 3.1% decrease in 2017. That is certainly welcomed news. It is important to point out that the report represents the preliminary data. We will be able to better identify trends and causative factors in the next couple of months after NHTSA releases its full report on traffic fatalities, as well as its annual report that specifically analyzes motorcycle crashes and fatalities. However, what we are once again seeing in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s preliminary report is that motorcycle fatalities continue to trend up or down with overall traffic fatalities. In 2017 motorcycle fatalities represented 14% of all traffic fatalities. That is where we

have been for the past ten years regardless of increases or decreases in the number of traffic fatalities, changes in the number of registered motorcycles and other motor vehicles, or fluctuations in vehicle miles traveled. When the additional reports are released in the upcoming months, we will report on their findings and compare those findings with past reports to identify crash and fatality trends, as well as causative factors contributing to both motorcycle crashes and fatalities. Brandy’s Birthday Blowout

By: Alice (Smiley) Harvey Carlyle n October 13 Tank Town Tavern and friends celebrated Brandy’s birthday. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of hanging out at the world-famous Tank Town Tavern, Brandy is head bartender and main squeeze of Tank Town Tavern owner Angelo. I wouldn’t be surprised if she isn’t the one calling all the shots too! Anyway, Angelo has been planning a huge surprise for Brandy’s Birthday Bash for weeks. When I got there people were dancing on the outside deck as the Jonathan Birchfield Band played strong all night. The band had a surprise visit from an Elvis impersonator which helped rock the crowd. Brandy loves Mermaids and the big surprise was a real live mermaid to make an appearance at the bash. Everyone enjoyed seeing the beautiful mermaid and taking pictures with her. Raffle tickets for a Big Dog chopper have been sold all summer and tonight was the big night that one lucky person was going home 1 bike richer! The crowd gathered in anticipation as they watched Angelo carry out the container to the mermaid for her to draw the winning raffle ticket for the bike. And the winner was.... Kristine McWilliams. Happy Birthday, Brandy! It was a great night in celebration of a great person. If you haven’t had the good sense to go by and visit with Brandy, Angelo and get Tanked at the Tavern you don’t have any more excuses. Get out there and have a good time at a genuine biker owned biker bar. There is always

8th Annual Biker, Blues & BBQ

By: Gary Moss Photo By: Mike Rummage espite Hurricane Florence brewing in from the east coast, 29 professional cooking teams arrived at Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury on Sept. 14 for the 8th Annual Biker, Blues & BBQ competition. There were also many determined vendors that braved the storm to display their specialty products, serve some fresh food, pour and sip local wine, and even give messages to the weary. The party started Friday night with live bands, Jukebox Rehab and The Tonez, taking over Tilley’s showroom floor. While the crowd was dancing and singing the cooking teams were in back getting all fired up. The one of a kind, handmade guitar trophy was revealed to its prospects then the judges were treated to a scrumptious catered dinner to prepare their taste buds for the next day. Ooooh that smell. Can’t you smell that smell!!! Saturday morning severe wind and rain swirled the parking lot however,

while Smokin’ with Smithfield, the cooking teams remained focused on the tasks at hand and the vendors hunkered down under the awning. During the day attendees gathered in the HOG room for the People’s Choice BBQ contest. Each competing team has an opportunity to prepare a pork roast for the general public to judge. EB’s Bar-B-Que of Charlotte, NC was awarded the people’s favorite. As the competition came to an end, all teams gathered together for the much-anticipated awards ceremony. There are 4 categories within a Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned cooking competition: Best in Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork, and Brisket and then an overall Grand Prize winner. This year Rocky Top Barbeque from Jonesborough, TN received the Grand Prize with a score of 691.3944. Midnight Burn from Pisgah Forest, NC followed for a very close 2nd and Old Colony Smokehouse out of Edenton, NC finished 3rd overall. The closure of the event was not downplayed as the excitement continued with a multitude of raffle prizes that were awarded. All proceeds from the raffle were donated to the Salisbury Veterans Administration Hospice, No Veteran Dies Alone program. Considering the success of this event, everyone who sponsored, attended, worked, volunteered, competed and judged are all winners.

3rd Annual MDA Ride

By: Ed Cleary aging Bull Harley-Davidson was the rally point for the 3rd Annual MDA ride on Saturday, September 29. The weather was perfect for a ride with temperatures in the mid 70’s and beautiful Carolina blue skies, very fitting since this was a rain date, the original date having been cancelled due to Hurricane Florence. Registration began at 10:30 and pre-ride events included raffles and 50/50 games. Raging Bull, always a great host, fed everyone with free hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks, including beer for those not riding. The event organizer, Theresa Hutchins, was herself diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at age 27. Unfortunately, the disease was not new to her as she grew up with two brothers who were also afflicted with muscular dystrophy. One of her brothers, James Lamm, passed away from the disease 3 years ago at age 43. It was James’s passing that prompted Theresa to search for a way to raise to raise awareness and money to help fight MDA. That’s when she heard about Harley-Davidson’s partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. That partnership

Mounted Patrol led 37 motorcycles out of the Raging Bull parking lot for a 70-mile ride. Initially keeping to the back roads of Durham County, the riders passed through the Creedmoor and Bahama communities before hitting the streets of Durham for the return ride back to Raging Bull. In all, the riders and corporate sponsors raised over $3,900, which will be used to send two children with muscular dystrophy to summer camps next year.

PGR Mission For Robert Jackson By: Wally Wersching obert Jackson was a US Air Force veteran who was only 49 years old when he died on August 27th. I received an email inviting me to stand for him on August 30th at the First Baptist Church in Landrum, SC. The “Patriot Guard Riders” (PGR) is an organization founded in 2005 who honors these heroes when they die. We are there to show that this country still remembers even after many years. Their main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives: 1.) to show sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities. 2.) to shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions by any protestor or group of protestors. (This is accomplished through strictly legal and non-violent means.) I initially learned about the PGR when I rode escort for “The Wall That Heals” replica of the Vietnam War Memorial. They seemed like a good group of bikers, so I looked into it,

and joined on-line in 2010. Since that time, I have been receiving many emails about missions for fallen heroes throughout North and South Carolina along with some in Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. I’m retired, so I participate in as many as I can. When I saw that Robert was only 49 years old, I wondered if he was one of the twenty veterans who commit suicide every day. I learned that he died of cancer – not suicide. According to the most recent report published by the Veterans Administration in 2016, which analyzed 55 million veterans’ records from 1979 to 2014, states that an average of 20 veterans a day die from suicide. It’s hard to believe that twenty veterans (men and women) take their own life every single day. There are more veterans dying by their own hand than being killed in battle. It’s a very sad situation. I left home about 12:30 on Thursday heading west on Rte. 74. I was told that there would be heavy traffic on the two-lanes because of the upcoming event at the Equestrian Center near Tryon, so I decided to stay on Rte. 74 (a four-lane expressway) and take I-26 south to Landrum. When I got close to I-26, I saw a detour sign for I-26 East. To me I-26 runs north and south not east and west. I wasn’t sure which direction was I-26 East so I took the detour through Columbus. It was a good thing I did because the I-26 heading south was I-26 East. When I arrived at the First Baptist Church Landrum, I parked next to the other bikes, and started to walk toward the church. That’s when Rick, the ride captain, came up to me, and offered me a flag to use in the flag line. I walked to the front of the church to join the other PGR members. One man had the Air Force Flag while the others all had US flags like me. As we stood in the hot sun, (Did I forget

to tell you it was hot? The thermometer on the bank said that it was 97 degrees – and that was in the shade.) I noticed that the two men opposite me had their black leather vests on. I wasn’t wearing mine. I wore a long sleeve white dress shirt but left my vest at home. They looked a little haggard by the heat. After a short while, they both took off their vests, and put them in the truck that carried the flags, water, and other stuff. The three men who got there first had the job of opening the door for the mourners. They also were standing in the shade. Before long, the service started, and then Rick told us to stand down, and return our flags to the truck. It wasn’t a very long mission but some of the mourners thanked us for being there for Robert as they walked into the church. I learned that the actual burial service with the full military honors would be in Mississippi next week. We walked back to the bikes, and I passed out copies of The Carolinas Full Throttle Magazine. I met a couple new friends: Ron and Terry. We could have stood there exchanging stories all afternoon but we all needed to get home. After I left the church, I stopped for gas and decided to take the two-lanes home. If I ran into any heavy traffic, I’d go around it. Maybe I’d get lost but I’d enjoy the ride. As Rte. 14 ended at I-26, I continued on Landrum Road. It’s a beautiful two-lane road with very scenic areas. There are a lot of horse related places, too, because of the Equestrian Center. There was no traffic in my lane until I came up to Rte. 9.

In the intersection was a huge wide-load truck stopped but heading straight at me. I could see that there was no way that the very wide rig could make it down the narrow two-lane. I stopped, shut off the engine, and sat watching the truck trying to navigate the turn. Then he started to back up to get back onto Rte. 9. I had no idea where he was going, so when there was an opening, I went to the intersection and the lady who was helping to navigate the huge truck motioned me to come across. After I passed Rte. 9, there was about a mile back-up trying to get to Rte. 9. It was a real mess. I thought that the large trailer had something to do with the upcoming Equestrian Center event. The rest of the ride home was uneventful. I enjoyed being able to stand for Robert as he stood for us while he was in the Air Force.

Full Throttle Bike Night Tour At The Wizard Story And Photo By Alan Dockery ummers sure go by fast as you get older. Gotta spend more time riding and hanging out with friends. So, it was great to ride over to The Wizard Saloon, Hickory, NC, the first Thursday of October for a Full Throttle Bike Night Tour evening. The # Full Throttle Bike Night Tour’s mission was to visit and share the popular bike night festivities at our Full Throttle patrons. Besides sharing cold drinks and laughs, we were at The Wizard to honor the owner, Mike Dyson. He had recently been awarded

the Bulldog Hero Award by Bob Karney Law Firm. Mike is a humble man and doesn’t seek praise. But every biker in the Hickory area knows he is the most generous and giving man around and deserves the award.

Yeah, summer continued into fall with a hot muggy day. Fine, that means more bikes in the parking lot. And most of us hanging outside around the bikes. Becky was inside serving up BBQ and fixins. The tub outside was full of cold beer. Folks weren’t in much of a music mood. It was just a good time to socialize with friends. Bikers we ain’t seen much this summer were there for a beer or two. Folks talked about the season’s events and planned some more rides before it gets cool. I know there are lots of “Biker Bars” these days, but The Wizard Saloon is Hickory’s Oldest Real Biker Bar. The city of Hickory was established around a bar serving folks moving west. The oldest bar in town is John’s Tavern down by the river, and bikers are welcome. But The Wizard Saloon is the

Mike is known across the area for the Conover School Toy Run, held the first Saturday in December. Becky told me they can be in restaurants and people from the school or families of students will come over and hug and thank them for what they for do those kids. I was glad to see so many folks at The Wizard Saloon that evening. I know there will be hundreds of y’all there December 1 for the 28th Annual Conover School Toy Run.

SevenFold Veterans And Law Enforcement United Rides

By: Ed Cleary n any given weekend, Raging Bull Harley-Davidson is a hub of activities. This last Saturday was no exception. In addition to their usual activates, which typically include live bands, free food and beer, Raging Bull hosted two fund raising rides which left from their parking lot within an hour of each other. First out was the SevenFold Veterans RC 1st Annual “Hero Happening” ride. This event was to help raise money for “Camp for Heroes “. This is a camp in Fairmont, NC for wounded veterans, firefighters, police officers, first responders, their families and caregivers. The proceeds will go to the upkeep of the buildings, grounds and supplies. SevenFold Veterans RC was founded by a group of friends that have banded together over the commonality they share for riding and community involvement. This is a non-profit organization that strives to progress the well-being of the surrounding communities, which would be impossible without the support of many others. There are many ways in which this club benefits its community, some of which involve charity rides, or sponsorship of individuals or families in need. The second ride out was the LEU (Law Enforcement United) Memory Ride. This ride was escorted by the Durham County Sheriff’s Department. All proceeds from this

Star Touring & Riding Monthly Ride By Bill Gallaway he Star Touring and Riding Greenville Chapter 352 Annual Leaf Run to Bryson City, NC for October was held on Saturday, Oct. 13. The intent was to view some fall colors. This year Mother Nature was holding on to the leaves and not providing us with the colors that we anticipated. Our ride started at our meet-up site in Pickens, SC at the Stop-A-Minit. We met at 8:45am with kickstands up at 9:15am. There were 14 riders on this month’s ride. The ride took us through the back roads of South Carolina and North Carolina and along the Tuckasegee River. Our destination for lunch was the Fillin Station Deli in Bryson City, but because it was fall festival days, we changed our lunch destination to The Iron Skillet which was busy, but they were able to accommodate our large group on the spur of the moment. After a very good lunch we broke off into two groups. One took the Blue Ridge Parkway back and the other went back via Franklin, NC. Last CFR Sonic Bike Night Of 2018

By Wally Wersching he Carolina Faith Riders sponsor a Bike Night at the Forest City, NC Sonic restaurant every Tuesday evening during the summer months starting at 6:30PM. I went to the first one of the year on May 1st, so it stands to reason that I should go to the last one on September 25th. I like to go at least once a month during the summer. The people there are very friendly, and the food is good too. I left home about 5:30 heading west on Rt. 150. I used to go west on Rt. 74 from Shelby but lately, the traffic is backed up for almost a mile so I go around the traffic. I follow Rt 150 toward Boiling Springs, and turn right onto Skinner Road. At the end, I turn right, and go to Rt. 74. I turn left to go west on Rt. 74. I easily merge in with the traffic at 65 mph – no backup. After a few miles, I veered to the right onto Rt. 74A. After a couple stoplights, I turned left to go into the Sonic parking lot. I looked around as I pulled in, and saw a couple bikes already parked. After I parked, I started to visit with the people who were there, and gave out a few “Full Throttle” magazines. More bikes pulled in, and before I knew it, the tables were full. Some of the people drove their cars because they come straight from work. Other people drove because it’s getting dark sooner, and they wanted to stay later to make the night last longer without riding their bike home in the dark.

I ordered a half-price cheeseburger, and the waitress brought it to me. The flavor of the lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions overpowered the thin hamburger patty and cheese. It was still pretty good. I met a few friends along with Mike, the president of the CFR, and now pastor of the Full Throttle Biker Church in Mooresboro. We had a very pleasant talk about a little of everything but mostly motorcycles, and places we rode this summer. I enjoy watching the bikes pull in, and then go talk to the rider about his bike – especially if the bike is unusual. That’s when I saw a bike stopped at the light waiting to turn in, and thought that it sure was a good-looking bike. As he rode in, I realized that it was an old friend on his 2012 Victory Kingpin. We sat together, and talked Victory motorcycles for a while. He’s had some hard times with a heart condition but is keeping steady. It was really good to see him again. I guess that everybody felt the same way. All the women came up to him, and gave him a big hug. The men shook his hand. So much so that it took him forever to eat his food. I wanted to get home in time to walk the dog, so I left for home about 6:45. The ride home was refreshingly cool with the sun going down and its reflection in my mirrors. It was a great way to spend an evening with friends. I will miss it until they start again next May.

Hawgs For Paws By Buzz nimal Adoption and Rescue Foundation (AARF) is a great organization that aids homeless and helpless cats and dogs in the greater Winston-Salem area and they brought some of their furry friends out to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson on October 6th for the Hawgs For Paws Ride. Registration was 9-10:30 and by the time the ride was set to leave a pack of biker dogs had ridden in with their owners to show support to some of their homeless friends. The ride, led by Winston-Salem H.O.G. Director David Nicoletta, left out after a brief safety meeting and took a nice hour and a half ride through some of the neighboring counties before returning back to Smokin HarleyDavidson. Upon returning to the dealership they were greeted with a pet adoption fair, door prizes, a silent auction that included the front and rear panel of NASCAR’s #1 Jamie McMurray’s race car. Smokin’ Also had a food spread with Hot Dogs and Chips

25th Annual Bronson Run Story by Alan Dockery s Summer winds down, riders in the Hickory, NC, area look forward to the Bronson Run. For 25 years, the Hickory Riding Club has held this popular ride to benefit the Catawba Regional Hospice. It’s also a memorial ride for old friends. I didn’t count bikes, but there were hundreds of folks at the end of the ride. With beautiful weather, lots of bikers made the Bronson Run this year. Yeah, some drove cages and parked in the big field. It’s good to see so many folks gathered at the clubhouse for BBQ and a whole bunch of door prizes as the day wound down. The Hickory Riding Club has a cool, old fashioned place out of town where bikers can have fun. I was proud of the club and friends who came out to benefit hospice that day.

Full Throttle Biker Church Of Western North Carolina

By Wally Wersching t the Full Throttle Biker Church in Pleasant Garden, NC, they believe and teach that only the Grace of the Lord Jesus can truly set you FREE. Their target is bikers and their families. They offer everything any mainstream church would offer: kid’s ministries, youth ministries, men’s and ladies ministries, Bible studies, etc. They just do it biker style. On Saturday, September 8th beginning at 11:00 AM, there was a “New Beginnings” Launch Party for the first satellite Full Throttle Biker Church in Mooresboro, NC. Mike Gettys has been associated with the Carolina Faith Riders-Campfield Memorial Baptist Church Chapter for years, and has taken the opportunity to start the Full Throttle Biker Church of Western Carolina. He will be the pastor but only wants to be called “Mike” because he’s also part of the congregation like all the rest. The event was free with music by “Triple Tree”, food, drinks, bike games, activities for children, door prizes, and more. The location of the new church is 620 NC-120 Highway, Mooresboro NC – (Exit 189 just south of US 74 Bypass). On Sunday, September 9th, the new church service was at 10 AM in the new, larger area of the building. I couldn’t make it for the beginning of the party but I did

make it at about 2:00PM in the afternoon. The band was playing when I parked “Miss Vickie”, and they sounded pretty good. I brought a stack of Carolinas Full Throttle magazines for the people who were still there. I saw small groups of bikers riding away from the church when I was riding on Rt 74. It was a very hot afternoon, and many who arrived at the start were leaving. Many in attendance were members of the Carolina Faith Riders who were there to support Mike in his new venture. I know that he will do a great job as pastor. As soon the band stopped, a lady started reading numbers for the door prizes. Most of the people were sitting in the shade under a tent waiting for their number to be called. There were a lot of door prizes. I’ll bet that everyone won at least one door prize when it was over. I walked inside the building to see the church room. It was air-conditioned, and felt great. The room was neat, clean, and ready for a service. I’m sure that this church will flourish in the future. After a while I left, and headed home to get out of the heat. It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon – with friends.

Bulldog Hero Award Winners Announced At Capital City Bikefest By: Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers eptember was an exciting month! Not only did we enjoy all the festivities at Capital City Bikefest, we also announced the 7th annual Bulldog Hero Award winners. Bob Karney developed the Bulldog Hero Awards to recognize and highlight incredible bikers and their causes. Five bikers, nominated and selected by their peers, were awarded the title of Bulldog Hero. Each received donations to their charity of choice, bringing the total donations to biker’s charities to over $50,000. Mike Dyson, founder and organizer of the Conover School Toy Run, earned the title of 2018 Bulldog Hero of the Year and earned a $1,000 donation to his charity of choice. Mike’s 27-year commitment to raising money for the special needs children at Conover School is inspirational. He is well known in the community and a hero to many with a long history of helping bikers and anyone in need. He’s also the owner of the oldest biker bar in town, The Wizard Saloon in Hickory, NC. Stop by and shake this man’s hand. The four runners-up included Carl “Teddy Bear” Forten-

berry (Teddy Bear’s Beach Run); Allen Hudson (Patriot Guard Riders); Mindy Smith (Americans Assisting Veterans); and David and Missie Thompson (Toys for Tots and community fundraising). No one went home empty handed though. All of these people deserved to be recognized for their work in the community, so each nominee received $250 to the causes they represented. They are: Wayne Bridges, of Dallas NC, Karen Collins from Charleston SC, Clint Franklin of Shelby NC, Tony King of Sophia NC, Kris Stroud from Concord NC, JD Tew of Fayetteville NC, and Jack Waters, Jr. from Lexington NC.

Fill The Bowl Ride At Raging Bull By: Ed Cleary n Saturday, Oct 13th, Raging Bull Harley-Davidson in Durham hosted the “Fill The Bowl Ride”. This event, sponsored by Chrysti Peek of Keller Williams Realty, was to help raise funds for K9 Buddy Bags (Trauma kits) for the Durham Police and Durham Sheriff’s Department’s K9 Units. Chrysti partnered with the Never Forget 9-11 Foundation for this event. This K9 Buddy Bag has the equipment necessary to administer First Aid and to help restrain and transport a wounded K9 safely to a medical facility in the event of an emergency. The K9 Buddy Bag is made specifically for a working K9’s The Mission of the Never Forget 9-11 Foundation is to keep the memory of the tragedy of September 11th, 2001 relevant. The ride itself was a beautiful 160 mile round trip from Raging Bull to the John H. Kerr Dam in Virginia. It was a perfect riding day with cool temperatures and blue skies. The only challenges encountered were the road closures due to flooding from Tropical Storm Michael. The ride leader even rode the route the day before so these occurred overnight. Raging Bull had hot dogs and hamburgers ready for the riders upon their return to the dealership. The Durham Police and Durham Sheriffs also had K9 officers there with their respective partners, Titan and Tip, for the public to meet and greet. Chrysti asked that we extend her gratitude to the Bull City H.O.G.’s for planning and leading the ride. The next Ride for the Never Forget 9-11 Foundation will

By: Ed Cleary hen Hurricane Florence came ashore in Wilmington, on Friday, September 14th, her projected track took a sudden turn to the southwest, sparing the Durham area from the direct hit previously forecast. While this saved our city from the worst-case scenario the storm still left thousands without power and in danger of flooding. Thanks to the American Red Cross, an emergency evacuation center had been set up at Hillside High School in Durham, offering a sanctuary to those worse affected. On Saturday, September 15, during the height of the storm, volunteers from Raging Bull Harley-Davidson, The Bull City H.O.G. Chapter #4040 and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine gathered together in the Raging Bull parking lot to cook hamburgers and hot dogs that provided a hot meal to all affected. The list included those seeking refuge from the storm, and the many volunteers, like The Red Cross, the Durham Police, Fire and EMS departments, all who were all on scene providing assistance. In all, three pick-up trucks full of hot burgers and dogs, any many, many cases of water were delivered to the Evacuation Center. In summarizing the effort, Bucky Thomas, the Director of the Bull City HOGs, said “we feel fortunate to be able to help those that have been put out by the storm. While we realize, our efforts are small, our hearts are large and we pray that all the victims of this storm, wherever they may be, safely find their way home.”

Bikers for Christ 1st Annual Autism Awareness Benefit Ride

By Wally Wersching n September 29th, the Bikers for Christ held their 1st Annual Autism Awareness Benefit Ride for Austin Frady with all the proceeds going to the Special Olympics. The ride started at 11:00AM from C&C Thunder in Cowpens, and it ended at the Spartanburg Harley-Davidson dealership. There was entertainment – Thad Coggins at noon, and Saving Darkness at 1:00PM. The Fatman’s BBQ was supplied by Jon Gaiser. There were door prizes, raffles, and a 50/50 drawing. I couldn’t make it to Cowpens so I went straight to the H-D dealership. I arrived at about 11:30. I found Carl (the dealership’s General Manager), and we talked for a while about his trip to the HarleyDavidson Rally in Milwaukee. He said that it was fun but very crowded. I walked around taking pictures but there weren’t many people there. Everybody was waiting for the hundred plus bikers to roll in. “Miss Vickie” looked lonely as she stood by herself in the parking lot. When I got the word that the group was a few minutes out, I positioned myself in a spot so I could take pictures as they rode in. First I heard the rumble, then I saw their headlights as they got closer. It was a pretty sight – all the bikes lined up heading into the dealership. As they rode by, I spotted a few friends. I tried to find them later but could not. As the group went into the parking area, it was a little chaotic – everybody trying to get parked without blocking anybody else. After all the bikers were parked, I walked around taking pictures, and visiting with friends. Everybody was having a good time. The cook was preparing the BBQ, and everybody else was getting ready for the festivities. The man on the

bandstand was singing and playing. He sounded pretty good. That’s when I saw Austin Frady. He was having a ball. People were taking selfies with him, and his smile would melt anyone’s heart. Austin is the young man who inspired the event. I believe that he’s one of the Special Olympians, and everyone loves him. The donations for this event go to the Special Olympics. I heard that at the start of the run in Cowpens, they had a little rain – not much just a sprinkle. All the while they were leaving the C&C Thunder lot, Austin was cheering them on. He gave everybody a very warm feeling. I stayed around for a few more minutes, and then headed home. After I got home, I talked Cindy into going out for a delicious lunch at our favorite restaurant. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning.

Continuted From Page #7 back in check, the pace of the build could speed up...a little. With the 11’ rolling chassis complete Hank was ready to tackle the handlebars, fuel tank and fenders. “The handlebars were easy”, said Hank. “I already had a set that I had made earlier as a static display, and they worked perfectly”. Not as easy was the fuel tank. The customer provided Hank with a full-size template he’d drawn up showing the shape and size that he envisioned, but after fitting a mockup to the frame they realized it just didn’t look right. So, Hank went to work to redesign the tank and after a few test fits they found the size and shape that worked. Building it though was another matter. The new tank required 20 square feet of 18-gauge steel to be cut into 26 separate pieces and shaped to exacting measurements. Each piece was then welded into place using a steal frame Hank built to act as a jig. The tank alone took many late and long hours but the result was well worth the effort. Fabricating the fenders presented their own challenges. Bending compound curves into sheet metal while keeping everything perfectly symmetrical is not easy, and Hank modestly admitted that it took several attempts with new steel to get it right. There were two front fenders made to achieve the correct look. The oil tank was made into the front of the rear fender to keep the lines of the bike clean. With the bike essentially complete, Hank outsourced the finishing work to different craftsmen in their respective trades. The seat leather work came from Corey Hughes at Hellbent Creations in the Charlotte area and the powder coating was done by Fletcher’s Powder Coating out of Creedmoor, NC. The spectacular candy purple paint job was done by Mike Miles at Auto Arts Ink, in Raleigh, and the galaxy themed graphics was done by Zach Matthews at ZMCC, also out of Raleigh. Looking at the finished bike I asked Hank what was the most challenging aspect of the build. “It’s what you don’t see that was the most difficult” said Hank. “We hid all of the wiring and hydraulics inside the frame and handle bars. I didn’t

use any hose clamps or zip ties”. And he’s right. Her sleek lines are virtually unmarred by any hint of wiring or plumbing. Hazy Thoughts is a big, menacing looking bike. Yet despite her size she’s also very sleek and elegant. All in all, Hank estimates that he has approximately 400- 500 hours invested in the build over the course of the 6 years it took to bring this client’s dream bike to life. When I asked him to sum it all up, he said it was challenging, and often frustrating, but one of the most satisfying custom motorcycles he’s built to date. As we concluded our interview, Hank threw out a teaser, “just wait until you see what I’m doing next...” One can only imagine!

1st Annual Memorial Ride For Fallen Bikers By: Megan Harris Photos By: Aardvark avid “Lulu” Llewellyn”s Family held their 1st Annual Memorial Ride For Fallen Bikers, in memory of Chad Engelkins, on Saturday September 29, 2018. David “LuLu” and his youngest son were involved in a hit and run accident on their way home in February of 2017, leaving behind his wife Tina, 3 children, and 3 grandchildren and a grandson he had yet to meet. LuLu’s family has had an enormous amount of support from their community, family, and friends in the wake of their loss. In return they decided to give back to others in their situation and start what’s known as LuLu’s Annual Memorial ride. Chad Englekins’ family was the first recipient of the endeavors this family plans to make a yearly event by raising funds for fallen bikers. Chad Engelkins was involved in a motorcycle wreck on his way home from Smokin’ Harley Davidson in June of 2018 leaving behind his young wife Shelley and 6

children. The ride started at Just One More Tavern in King, NC at 9am with kickstands up at 11. There was an incredible turnout of over 100 motorcycles and 24 sponsors. At registration, riders received a Lulu T-shirt in memory of Chad Engelkins, and a ticket for a homemade BBQ meal at the end of the ride. Everyone had the option to purchase stickers, and 50/50 raffle tickets. Also, at registration was David Llewellyn’s wife of 21 years, Tina Llewellyn, and Chad Engelkins’ wife of over 14 years, Shelley Engelkins. Both wives were riding with friends and are proud supporters of their husbands. Once we arrived at the final stop for the day there was an auction and a bake sale. Live music from Concord North Carolina’s band: Bending Fate, rocked out while everyone enjoyed their BBQ dinner. LuLu’s 1st Annual Memorial Ride For Fallen Bikers raised around $4500 for Shelley Engelkins and her and Chad’s 6 children: Jake, Gracie, Lynni, Cleo, Josie, and Henry! NHRA Carolina Nationals At zMAX Dragway Story By: Alan Dockery Photo By: Kenneth Charlton he National Hot Rod Association stopped during their championship chase at zMAX Dragway, Concord, NC, for the Carolina Nationals in the middle of October. Twenty-two Pro Stock Motorcycles were at the dragstrip North of Charlotte running hard to make the 16-bike field. Matt and Angie Smith from King, NC, are popular with fans across the country. Chip Ellis, China Grove, NC, rides for the dominating HarleyDavidson factory team now. Matt had won a couple races this year and Angie is running her best ever. So, fans were looking for a Carolina Racer to be in the Winner’s Circle on Sunday. Pro Stock Motorcycle is a great class in many ways. Fans who have followed motorcycle drags for years will see racers they have cheered down the strip many times, plus, young men and women hoping to be the future stars. You can cheer for Harleys, Buells and Suzukis. There are so many things that make an NHRA race such a great fan event. Every ticket is a pit pass. At NHRA races the fans can walk the pits any time during the weekend. You can watch race teams work on the bikes or cars. The riders and drivers eagerly talk to fans and pose for photos. HarleyDavidson always has a huge display of their new motorcycles. Matt’s season started rather shaky when the team he was set to race for pulled out at the last minute. Thanks to friends, sponsors and Matt’s extensive skill the team came back as winners. Matt has qualified his Elite Performance EBR Buell Number One a few times and won a couple races. He was leading the championship points early in the chase, but fell behind L. E. Tonglet at the last race. In eliminations, Matt sent one rider after another back to the trailer to pack for going home. He retook the points lead when beating Angelle Sampey in the semi-final round. That set up two Carolina favorites in the finals, Matt and Chip on the Vance & Hines Harley. Chip left a blink too early lighting the red bulb giving Matt the win. That was Matt’s third win of the season and 21st of his career. He left zMAX leading the

championship points by 41 over L. E. with two races left in the 2018 season. NHRA comes to the Carolinas twice a year for the famous Four-Wide in the Spring and the Carolina Nationals. Y’all come on out and cheer on our local teams.

Woman Rider Wins World Motorcycle Racing Championship

Story by Alan Dockery have preached for decades that motorcycle racing is very diverse with all ages, races, nationalities and both genders competing. Now, Ana Carrasco has won the first really big international solo motorcycle road racing championship. The 21-year-old Spanish racer has claimed the 2018 World Supersport 300 Championship riding a Kawasaki Ninja 400. Ana started on her big sister’s minibike at It’s important that a three years old. Her commitment to the sport results in beating an entire field of men and the satisfaction that it gives. “Yes, for me it’s good,” Ana laughs. “This is a motivation to show the people that women can do the same. This is what I want – I want to win in a world championship so I can show that I can beat the best riders in the world in that class. So, I want to be always better and better and better and to arrive at the top. Once you can see that other girls are doing it then you can think, Why not? Why can’t I do the same.” Ana clearly holds her own in a male-dominated sport. She even has a ‘Hunky Umbrella Fella’ when on the starting grid getting ready to race. Everyone else has pretty women, ‘Brolly Dollies’ shading them. She has earned the other racers’ respect. “For sure they respect me because if you are fast, everybody respects you. I’ve shown them that I can win races and fight for the championship so I think everybody respects me now,” Ana said. “I always just try to ride as hard as I can and try to achieve results. I don’t think about being a woman. So, in that moment I was just happy because I’d won the race but after some days I start to realize what I had achieved. It’s important that a woman can be fighting for the victory in the world championship because it’s good for other girls to see that this is possible.”

Angry, Who Me?

Bros and Bro-ettes, Who controls your life, Satan or Jesus? A lot of us go to church only on special holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter. I can remember when I was little come At Easter time, I would get a new outfit and off to church we would go, same as Christmas. Many think that’s ok (at least I went), but the Lord doesn’t want half of us He wants all of us. Satan on the other hand wants what he can get. He’ll take a little at a time and before long he has all of you. One way the Devil has you is by your anger. Satan puts people and things in our life to make us mad and angry. The angrier you get and fuss and rant the better he likes it. Ephesians 4:26-27. 26- “Be angry and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your wrath. 27- do not give place to the Devil. We hold advantage over the Devil, it’s up to you how you us it.” I’m as guilty as anyone about anger. Battling these kidney stones has had me in a lot of pain and that opens the door for the Devil to step in. Satan knows when and where to step in just anything to set you off. 1Peter 5:8 “Be sober be vigilant; because your adversary the Devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Some of us think that we can worship our motorcycle, car, boats, houses anything that we like. Just let someone say something about them in an ugly way, what is the first thing that happens? Most of us get mad and rant and rave, the Devil is sitting back having a good old time cause he got you angry

again. You know the Lord doesn’t like us worshipping idols. Remember disobedience to God gives the Devil a foot hold on your life. God looks at our heart, if we mess up all we have to do is ask God to forgive us. God knows we’re going to mess up but it’s up to us what we do about it. James 4: 7,8,9,10. 7“Therefore submit to God. Resist the Devil and he will flee from you. 8- Draw near to God and he will draw near to you, cleanse your hands you sinners and purify your hearts, you double minded. 9- Lament and mourn and weep; Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Don’t think you won’t ever get angry anymore, it just means you have Someone to help you through it, all you have to do is ask.

Tribute To The Troops

7th Annual Memorial Ride And Concert

Story and Photo by Evan Parton ribute To The Troops is an organization of grateful Americans dedicated to preserving the memory of those men and women of our nation’s military who lost their lives while bravely protecting our freedom. It is in their memory that we honor and convey our heartfelt gratitude to the family and friends left behind and extend our sincere appreciation to all veterans who have served, whether in war or in peace. October 13 & 14 some of those “Grateful Americans” came from Minnesota, Illinois, Florida, Tennessee, Oregon, California, Virginia, Wisconsin and South Carolina to Statesville, NC, for North Carolina’s 7th Annual Memorial Ride and Concert by co-founder Rockie Lynne. The family visits for Saturday went to relatives of Darryl “Ward” Linder, PFC Ivan Rowe, Lance Corporal Mason Vanderwork, and Gunnery Sergeant Christopher Eckard. Sunday, we visited the families of CWO4 George Thomas Dawson, Staff Sergeant Dale Beatty, and Lance Corporal Johnathan Sharpe. On what looked like was going to be a complete wash out

with hurricane Michael baring down on us on Thursday, many prayers were sent up asking the good Lord to move it out, and He did. We woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the staging location of Tilley’s H-D on Saturday morning, with bike after bike rolling in and getting registered. With KSU at 8:00 AM, we all gathered for our ride brief and safety instructions before we mounted our two wheels of steel to go and visit these Gold Star families. With the total bike count for Saturday of 69. Sunday’s ride started out a little on the wet side, as just minutes before KSU at 10:00 AM it began to rain. We again gathered for our marching orders and off we went. With the total bike count on Sunday of 81. Each state that has a chapter makes presentations from their state, as a reminder to the family members that their sacrifice to this country will not be forgotten, and that their Gold Star family just got bigger. One of the most common comments made during the presentation, “This is one family that no one really wants to be a part of”, but the sad reality is they are now a part of a very large supportive group, from coast to coast. Rockie Lynne gives a moving biography of each Fallen Hero as if he had known them their whole life, bringing tears to the over 100 riders on both days. The closing Concert and Bell Ringing ceremony was held at the Cove Church in Statesville Sunday night. This year’s ride was a tough one, as the NC Tribute To The Troops chapter lost our Ride Captain Bill Wood, on July 18, 2018. Bill was a member of the NC Board of Directors and loved giving back to the families we visited each year. A tragic accident took Bill from us way to early, as he was doing a preride for this year’s NC TTTT ride. I guess God needed a Ride Captain for some important rides. And, the entire ride was dedicated to Bill for his service to God, Country and Family. “Go Rest High on that Mountain” my Brother and friend, you will be missed by many.

8th Annual Carolina Patriot Rovers Ride For The Fallen By Buzz he Patriot Rovers organization is dedicated to helping our veterans dealing with PTSD. David Cantera, heads up the outfit, training service dogs to help the Veterans with their individual needs and then awards the newly trained and tested pooch to his new owner. It’s a pretty amazing process. Obviously this type of project needs funding and since David is a biker himself, he leans on the patriotic minded bikers for a little love. The 8th Annual (56 in dog years!) Patriot Rovers Ride for

the Fallen was set for October 13 at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC. It was the first crisp morning for the Piedmont area and the first ride after Tropical Storm Michael flooded the state. It was a leather jacket day, but I got away without wearing gloves. The music was playing at Smokin’ and a handful of bikes had already arrived and signed in. David and his team had a few service dogs hanging out at the registration table helping folks get signed in for the ride. Kickstands were up at 11:30 and our group rolled out and headed for Pilot Mountain. The temps had warmed a little and it was a great ride up Hwy. 52 to Pilot Mountain, the view of the Pilot Mountain Dome was spectacular the closer we got to our destination. Pilot Mountain State Park is right off the highway and we ascended the twisted roads with ease. It was a busy day on the mountain but we managed to get some great front row parking for the 20+ bikes that rode up with us. A group picture was in order and then we spent some time enjoying the view before heading back to the Xtreme Wings N’ Things and Smokin’ H-D for a little after ride revelry. The Patriot Rovers organization is in operation year round donating their time and the service dogs to our Veterans. They appreciate everyone who rode along with them on the ride, but like all year long projects, funding is a constant need. 7th Annual Tim Diffin Riding With The Angels Memorial Run

By: Jeanie Hood Carter Photos: ChiForce he last Saturday in September was the 29th and the annual date for the 7th annual “RIDING WITH ANGELS” Tim Diffin Memorial Run. The event is always a bitter sweet day for many while remembering our friend and supporting needy foster children. The weather was great for a run and the annual activities as the 33 riders pulled out from The Doghouse Bar and Grill. Stops were VFW Post 690 in Fayetteville, Lost Memories in Spring Lake, and The Corner Pockets in Fayetteville, then back to the Doghouse for the last card and more. Once riders drew their cards, The Doghouse had the annual meal set up for hungry riders while “Crow” Krozak and The Chemical Lizards provided everyone with some sweet entertainment, and

more folks joined in who didn’t make the run but came out to celebrate Tim’s life. Once everyone ate, the game was on with high hand being won by Laura Mussler and low hand was won by Rob Bergen, both long-time supporters of the event. This year’s auction included some very worthy motorcycle art. Congratulations and thanks to Chi-Force, Gary Beitsch, and Thomas ‘Commish’ Grubbs for winning bids on the art. Also auctioned were 3 beautifully hand crafted native style flutes by local craftsman and artist motorcyclist Marion Teal, who did a short demonstration earlier in the day. Thanks to Chi-Force and Shawna Marston for their bids. I also won the bid on one of these fabulous instruments! Some of the raffle items included a Bar In A Jar (high hand also won one of these), a tee shirt from the annual Hoka Hey Run that makes a run around America annually, vests, camping equipment, chargers and more to carry on bikes. It was a crazy time during the auction! Thanks to our three stops and The Doghouse, “Bullet” Underwood-VP, Shawna Marston-Secretary, Flo Thompson, Chi-Force, Vince Sittnick, and The DSS for coming, and all who supported and made it a great day! All funds go to a special account at DSS and are literally split between children, who would otherwise have no Christmas, and each gets to buy what they need or want.

14th Annual Capital City Bikefest

By Buzz ay Price had a vision for a rally in Raleigh, NC. For 12 years, he and his team at Ray Price HarleyDavidson put together a huge block party that bikers from all over the Carolinas rode to and enjoyed. Sadly, Ray passed away before the 13th Annual event but the show went on! This year’s event had a few changes. Ray Price HarleyDavidson is now Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson and the 14th Annual Capital City Bikefest was centered around the dealership with the same enthusiasm and attractions. Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson was the epicenter of the event and where the event kicked off on Friday, September 21. South Saunders Street, that runs in front of the dealership, was blocked off for the party and lined with vendors with a HUGE ramp in the middle of the street set up in anticipation of Cole Freeman’s epic 90+ foot jump that was set for Saturday evening. Just having the ramp there set the

tone for excitement. Cole and Ryan Lanier kept the crowd going all weekend with stunt shows every 2 hours. South Saunders Street received a new layer of rubber graffiti each time these guys took to their bikes. Stopies, burnouts, and wheelies were just the beginning. These daredevils were a lot of fun and pulled off some pretty cool tricks. Cole was killing it on his Street Glide standing on the back seat riding in circles and various other stunts that showed incredible command over his ride. I swear Ryan Lanier blew at least 4 tires a day and finished a few of his shows by somersaulting off the front of his bike as it came to a stop. Both engaged the crowd and kept everyone on their toes It was a beautiful day and the entertainment was stacked up! In the dealership parking lot, a covered stage was set up next to the building for the live acts that started the day off at 11am with Johnny Orr and followed with Jessie Kat and the Fireballs, Motorjunkie, and Heads Up Penny leading up to the Opening Ceremonies that evening. The Opening Ceremo-

nies were led by Tobacco Roads’ Kris Weiss and he passed the mic around to the other distinguished folks on stage including new principal owner John Marotti, GM Mark Hendrix, and some of the beneficiaries of the event. The was a special surprise for us all and Kris asked us all to look up as the Bandit Flight Team did a flyover during the National Anthem. It was too cool, they came back by in the missing man formation while the bag piper played. It was a heck of a kickoff to the weekend! The Night continued after the rally was officially opened with the Wells Family Band. In the evening, the Custom Dynamics Show of Lights Parade took a ride through the surrounding communities and returned to the dealership to the Show of Lights Bike Show and lit up the night with about 20 bikes decked out in LED lighting. Over on the main stage, Kasey Tyndal headlined the night. Rolling Stone called her “A hard rock-country badass” and she totally lived up to

To top off the Convention center scene, the Rumble In Raleigh Car Show had Cabarrus St. blocked off with some really awesome rat rods, hot rods, low riders, and other 4 wheeled show pieces. Capital City Bikefest shuttles were running between the Convention Center and Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson all day and it really made it convenient to take in both of these venues. I had to hop in and get back to the dealership before the Karney Law Firm Bulldog Hero Awards went off at 2pm on the dealership’s center stage. Bob Karney has been giving back to the biker community for the past 8 years in the form of honoring bikers who make a difference in their community.

Death Trap Cycles took home Best of Show with a beautiful old school style 2014 Shovel that was completely decked out in chrome and an elaborate multicolor, metal flake paint job. It was a true beauty that you just had to see! On one corner of the convention center was 7th Annual Tattoo Fest. There were over 20 tattoo artists slinging ink all

weekend. Friday was by appointment only, but Saturday you could get some awesome new art if you could find an open chair! Both Saturday and Sunday you could enter your healed tattoos in contests that were broken in to styles, sizes and

The Party on South Saunders St. raged on all day and the seemingly endless stream of bikers coming to the party was only interrupted by stunt shows that went on every couple of hours. In the middle of the afternoon, a special announcement came around that Mae Sutton was the Lucky Number winner and won a beautiful 2018 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. What luck, that’s something you don’t see every day or every year! The dealership was buzzing with the upcoming Cole Freeman motorcycle jump that I mentioned earlier. Cole was attempting a 90+ foot jump over 18,760 bottles of water that would be donated to the disaster relief effort for the hurricane victims in NC. The anticipation was on the face of everyone in the crowd as Cole took the required test runs, then rode to the top of the ramp, Evel Knievel style, and signaled that he was ready. David Ankin of the TV series “Toy Makerz” was on hand all weekend filming for his show and was also the commentator for the jump. We all held our breath as

Cole made his final approach and soared through the air. The cameras were clicking, and the cell phone cameras rolled as he nailed the landing! What a spectacular sight and we were all front row, less than 20 feet from the ramp! The night went on in this wall to wall biker party and was headlined at 8:30 with AC/DC cover band Thunderstruck. Forget paying the high cost of concert tickets, Thunderstruck sounded and looked like AC/DC and kept the crowd on their feet to the last note. The party went on till Sunday at 5pm and I’m telling you now, if you missed the 14th Annual Capital City Bikefest, you missed the party of the year. It was a class act event, all cylinders were hitting for the entire show. There wasn’t a lull in the action and between both venues you had something for everyone’s taste. The 27th Annual Jim McClure All Harley Nitro World Finals Story and photos by Alan Dockery wo hurricanes couldn’t stop the roar and thunder of the Harley Drags at Rockingham Dragway when the American Motorcycle Racing Association came to North Carolina early last month. The thunder was down the strip, while The Rock hosted the 27th Annual Jim McClure All Harley World Finals featuring the Ray Price Top Fuel Challenge. I was glad to see so many of y’all camped for the weekend. One of the best ways a biker can spend a fall weekend is at the Harley Drags. Racing all day plus cool air and campfires with friends at night. There are lots of races at The Rock, but the Harley Drags are special. I saw folks from my county and bikers I ain’t seen in years who drove hours to be at The Rock. Saturday morning was cool and clear. Great racing conditions and lots of bikes ready for a morning test and tune session. Qualifying started at noon with some cool machines in the staging lanes. Fans into nitromethane-fueled motorcycles were smiling since there were at least 30 fuel bikes there ready to rip down the Rockingham strip. Some of the machines that compete in the National Hot Rod Association Mickey Thompson Top Fuel Harley series were there. Doug Vancil had both his 2018

machine and a new race bike. Both were real nice looking. Qualifying went smoothly with no major oil downs nor issues. Third round, the sun going down makes us take a short break as it hits just the wrong spot on the track and Christmas Tree. But oh wow, do the fans love watchin’ fuel bikes shoot flames as they roar off into the darkness. After qualifying, the Straightwire Band played down by the main gate. Chilly air kept the party crowd smaller than usual. Before I get into Sunday’s race, I want to thank Steve Earwood, Rockingham Dragway owner and his crew for hosting

the AMRA All Harley World Finals. We love The Rock. AMRA Ray Price Top Fuel Challenge As usual, half of the Top Fuel field at The Rock competing for the AMRA Ray Price Top Fuel Trophy was from the Carolinas. Jay Turner brought the new ProCharger bike out for its first passes. Bobby Buckley owns it and I think the bike will be called Lucky Number Seven, since it’s the seventh Bulldog. Very impressive machine. Fans swarmed it as Jay made the first passes ever on the bike. Eventually, he whacked it hard enough to post a 6.40 second pass and take the number one qualifying spot. Judging by the low miles an hour at the finish line Jay backed off around 1,000 feet and could have gone quicker. Will this be the first Harley fuel bike to make a five second pass? Sadly, it broke the transmission in first round of eliminations and didn’t run anymore that weekend. Tii Tharpe, East Bend, NC, was the star of the pits since he had recently won the NHRA Top Fuel Championship. He was riding Lagertha, Jay’s 2018 race bike. Tracy Kile, Asheville, NC, and Armon Furr, Orangeburg, SC, were also on Sunday’s ladder. Fans perked up when Tii faced off against Doug Vancil in the semi-final. But Doug was posting the low ETs every round and took the win Tracy went rounds and faced Doug in the finals. But Doug posted a 6.25 to Tracy’s 6.61 for the win and cool trophy. In Nitro Funny Bike we saw Keith Browne, Semora, NC, ride his awesome turbo machine in the class. Sam White, Chapin, SC, also ran in Funny Bike. Fans like Pro Fuel bikes. They are the small nitro bikes with 120 cubic inch engines, carburetors and single speed only. But those machines still fill the air with nitromethane, rattle your chest and put down 7.30’s all day.

Sam White was riding one of Johnny Vickers bikes that has logged some miles under a few riders. Sam was riding her hard as he consistently posted great, near record times. Sam went on to take the win over Tyler Wilson, Walnut Cove, NC. Tyler was still happy since he had locked up the AMRA National Championship. The other Pro Fuel teams we cheered for were; Janette Thornley, Statesville, NC, and Jay Beasley, Winston Salem. Richard Boone, Mint Hill, NC, qualified in the Pro Mod class. Hard Charging Sportsman Racers There were lots of Sportsman racers at The Rock and that’s where so many of my buddies run. I’m glad to see one of my favorite classes, Outlaw Street, growing. I know some of y’all love the smell of nitromethane. But I dig that sweet scent of Purple VP Race Gas. These are the bikes I would most like to borrow for the weekend. The fans love the class too, watching riders try to hold down wheelies through the first couple gears as they run the quarter mile under nine seconds on streetable bikes. Mike Motto, Jacksonville, NC, gave us a Carolina rider to cheer for. Freddy Frazier, Sanford, NC, qualified in the Super Comp 8.90 index class, but went red in the final. David Minton, Trinity, NC, raced in the 9.30 Top Eliminator class. The Super Gas 9.90 class saw Joe Petersen, Wilmington, NC; Chris Wood, Goldsboro, NC, and Rick Medford, Cherokee, NC, in competition. Joe also ran the Dresser class. Paul Waton, Greensboro, NC, missed making the field by half a second. Medford and Glenn Sutton, Moore, SC, took a shot at the Pro Eliminator 10.90 class. Dickie Johnson, Aynor, SC, competed in Hot Street.

Chris Rasile, Greensboro, NC, brought one of the coolest machines to The Rock to run the 11.50 Street Eliminator class. Chris has restored an old Wayne Loftin race bike and is riding it. Glenn Sutton also ran SE. Kyle Fitzmaurice, from Maryland, posted a .015 second reaction time in the Dial-In Eliminator class. That earned him the Big Check and $200 from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Expect to see Kyle on the strip more in the future since he is the son of Dan Fitzmaurice, president of Zippers Performance. That team had a couple sharp Indian Scouts at Rockingham showing off the performance parts they sell for those cool bikes. Joe Petersen wore out the Eliminator class running 9.90 passes one after another to take the win. It was great to see friends I’ve known for many years and make new ones at The Rock. A man buys a parrot, only to have it constantly insult him. He tries everything to make the parrot stop, but nothing works. Frustrated, the man puts the parrot in the freezer. After a few minutes the insults stop. The man thinks he might have killed the parrot, so he opens the freezer and takes the parrot out. The parrot is shivering. It stammers, “S-s-sorry for being r-r-rude. Please f-f-forgive me.” Then, after a moment, the parrot softly asks, “W-w-what exactly d-ddid the turkey do?”

Feeling guilty, he dashed to the hospital. He saw the doctor in the corridor and asked about his wife’s condition. The doctor glared at him and shouted, “You went ahead and finished your fishing trip didn’t you! I hope you’re proud of yourself! While you were out for the past four hours enjoying yourself on the pond, your wife has been languishing in the Intensive Care Unit! It’s just as well you went ahead and finished, because it will more than likely be the last fishing trip you ever take! For the rest of her life she will require round the clock care, and you’ll have to be her caregiver!” Feeling guiltier than he’d ever thought possible, the man broke down and sobbed. The doctor then chuckled and said, “I’m just screwing with you- she’s dead. What’d you catch?”

Not to be outdone the wife rips out another one and says, ‘’Touchdown, tie score.’’ Five seconds go by and she lets out a little squeaker and says, ‘’Field goal, I lead 17 to 14.’’ Now the pressure is on the old man. He refuses to get beaten by a woman, so he strains really hard. Since defeat is totally unacceptable, he gives it everything he’s got, and accidentally poops in the bed.... The wife says, ‘’What was that?’’ The old man says, ‘’Half time, switch sides!” Did you know that Moses was the first person to ride a motorcycle? It’s in the Old Testament, ‘the roar of Moses’s Triumph could be heard all over Israel.’

70th Anniversary Celebration At VFW Post 9899 By: Rick Gammons he VFW Post 9899 has been around for a long time. They have been welcoming vets and veteran friendly people into their post for many years. Saturday was no exception. The celebration started at noon. I got there a little after one and the parking lot was full. The celebration was from noon until 6pm. At one, it looked like Peggy and I needed to catch up. There were friends and other buds we had not seen in quite a while. Lots of hugs and handshakes, plus, the cantina was full of people celebrating the 70 Year Anniversary of Post 9899. Same thing outside. More hugs and handshakes, plus vendors and horseshoes. Off to the side was a DJ, kicking out some cool tunes. OK, back inside, there was food and a lot of it. Unfortunately, by the time Peggy and I made it to the hall, the kielbasa was gone! Always happens like that. We should have eaten earlier, oh well.... The burgers were good, and you could fix it your way, adding available condiments and topping it off with a side of slaw and beans. Meanwhile, a 50/50 draw was going on. I was still enjoying my burger, so I did not hear who won.

The afternoon continued with friends, buds, beer and plenty of laughter. There were a lot of people dropping by to help VFW 9899 celebrate their 70 years and to initiate the next 70 years! The celebrating continued on past six oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;clock. A fair amount of people had left, but the bar was full, on into the evening. Want to hook up with good folk? Drop by the VFW 9899 at 2923 Archdale Road in High Point. Most local folk know where it is, so if you get lost, they can get you there. So, come by for a beer or two....or three. Next on the Post agenda is honoring vets on November 11 and participating in the annual Toys For Tots by being a drop off location. Always something going on at Post 9899.
