an you believe it’s November already? 2019 is almost over, Veterans Day is our next holiday. We always pause on the 11th of November to thank our veterans and active duty service personnel. Speaking of thanks, Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and if you are like me, we have a lot to be thankful for. Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair

hen it comes to motorcycles, there are many options for

routine servicing, maintenance, performance upgrades, and repairs. Dealerships are an obvious choice for many, while others have a favorite mechanic or small shop that they go to. I even ride with a couple of fellows that do all their own work and have garages to do the work in. Then there are guys like me. I am not a wrench turner and I’m usually working with a rather austere budget, so I tend to shop around for the best deals I can find. For warranty work the dealership is the obvious choice. But beyond that, their hourly shop rates can be a little steep for the budget minded customer like me. Over the years, I have visited a number of the independent shops for routine maintenance. oil changes, new tires, etc. and for the most part they’ve all done a good job for me at a fair and reasonable price. But there can be some downsides to the independents as well. They are working on razor thin profit margins and are often struggling to stay in business. Great mechanics are not always good businesspeople. Another disturbing trend I’ve noticed is there seems to be a very high turnover rate with mechanics and I always seemed to have a new one with every repeat visit. One of these “new guys” even went so far as to criticize the work performed previously by the man he replaced! That’s when I met Hank Thibodeau, the owner of Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair, whose labor rate of $55 per hour is very reasonable. I first met Hank a little over a year ago as I was working on the cover story for “Hazy Thoughts”, the monster 11 foot long chopper Hank created. This incredible machine, as much a work of art as an engineering marvel, was just the latest in a long line of custom built motorcycles to come out of the Widowmaker shop.

Widowmaker has been constantly evolving since its humble beginnings almost 17 years ago. Hank, who holds an associate degree in applied science, started his mechanics career at a small construction company in New Hampshire. After moving to North Carolina, he went to work at the Gregory Poole Caterpillar Truck shop where he became a Master Certified Cat Engine Technician. It was during this time that he began what is now Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair, working on bikes part time, getting certified in motorcycle repair and going to fabrication seminars. As Hank’s reputation as a custom bike builder began to grow so did his motorcycle business. With the support of his wife, Anne, he made the decision to leave the corporate world so he could devote 100% of his efforts on his flourishing new business. But getting a small business up and running is not easy and Hank; like others, struggled for several years. He often wondered what the next day would bring. One day it might be a bike to work on and the next a dump truck that needed an engine overhaul. Hank did whatever it took to pay the bills. Fortunately for Hank, he had the unending support of Anne and his in-laws, Jimmy and Mildred, who would not allow him to fail. From the beginning they invested a lot Continued On Page 8

Continued From Page 7 of time and money on staying current with the ever changing technology, investing heavily in both training and tooling for the shop. “I am constantly doing whatever I need to do to gain more knowledge and strengthen my skill sets” said Hank. In fact, at the time of this writing, Hank is preparing for a trip to Mississippi to attend a seminar on Techno Research tuning/ diagnostic software, which he uses exclusively. Of course, as the business grew so did the demands on Hank’s time. He just couldn’t do it all himself anymore, so he hired a full time assistant, Patrick. That was 7 years ago. Patrick’s love of motorcycles and skills as a mechanic have earned him a place in the Widowmaker family. There’s not a lot that Widowmaker can’t or won’t do. They do everything from simple repairs and diagnostics, to tires, custom built handlebars, and intake and exhaust systems, all the way up to one of a kind, custom made hand built bikes. They also service and work on all makes of bikes, even metric cruisers. If you’re looking for a technician that knows his way around a motorcycle, then call Hank! Over the years Widowmaker has developed some very close relationships with a number of performance parts manufacturers, including Zipper’s Performance Products and Suspension Technologies, so that they can bring you the best riding experience possible. Being an independent shop also allows Hank the freedom to do what is right for you, your bike and your riding style. Hank rides every bike he services, and, unlike the dealerships, he’s is not bound by the specs in a tech manual. If it doesn’t feel right, then it isn’t. It is as simple as that, despite what the book says. Hank has learned to trust what the bike is telling him and will make adjustments accordingly. Located at 5582 Mt. Harmony Church Road near Rougemount, NC, Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair is not a shop that you’re likely to run across by accident, unless you’re on a nice countryside ride, but you’ll definitely see the shop

as you ride by because there will be a half a dozen or so people standing in the driveway waving as you pass. The rural location has not hampered business, though. Hank has customers that come from as far away as way from Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia to see him. And what’s in a name? Hank is often asked where “Widowmaker” came from. The name was actually Anne’s idea. It’s not meant to imply anything morbid but rather it describes what happens to a relationship when a guy falls in love with his bike. “My favorite part of the business”, said Hank, “is that it truly is a family affair. I guess you could call us a true “mom and pop” shop. I started the business with my wife by my side and with my in-law’s support. Now, Patrick and I turn the wrenches, Anne runs the books and Jimmy and Mildred do all of the parts runs and miscellaneous errands. My son, Dawson, has also recently come on board helping with the daily chores of the shop. If you ever call or come by you will be greeted by family and treated as family.” I recently witnessed, firsthand, the scope of customer loyalty Hank has built over the years. Earlier this spring he held a customer appreciation BBQ dinner at the shop. Despite it being a cold and wet afternoon, hundreds of customers and vendors from as far away as Charlotte and Asheboro turned out to celebrate Hank’s success, and every one of them was ready with a “Hank story”. “Hank did this and fixed that” was the common theme of the afternoon.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride Of Asheville By: Wally Wersching n Sunday, September 29, 2019, tens of thousands of distinguished ladies and gentlemen in hundreds of cities worldwide wore their pressed tweed suits, waxed their moustaches (men only), and rode their classic and vintage styled motorcycles for awareness, and a fundraiser for men’s health. In 2012, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was created by Mark Hawwa in Sydney, Australia. It was inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper riding his 1957 Matchless G3LS while wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, while connecting vintage motorcycle communities. The first ride brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities. The success of the event encouraged Mark to use it to support a worthy cause. The ride grew every year. In 2018, more than 115,000 participants in 648 cities from 101 countries rallied to raise awareness and $6.3M USD. It was donated to the Movember Foundation to help fund research

into prostate cancer and support men’s mental health. The foundation is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. It addresses some of the biggest

health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. It doesn’t get government funding, so it can invest quicker in what works. In 15 years, the foundation funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world. The motorcycle requirements for the ride are: Tracker, Chopper, Classic, Scrambler, Bobber, Café Racer, Brat Styled, Modern Classic, Scooter, or Side Car. They are going for a specific look. Besides this ride being made up of classic and vintage styled bikes, and riders dressed dapper, it is about raising money for a very worthy cause, and having fun doing it. For the past three years, I have attended the rides in Greenville, SC, and thoroughly enjoyed them. This year, when I went to the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride website, there was no Greenville ride. I learned that the man spearheading

the ride last year spent more money than he could afford. The money donated goes directly to the Distinguished Gentleman’s fund with a tax deductible receipt for your taxes. The extra costs of the ride like food, promotional items, rental of things like porta-potties, and other stuff is paid for separately, and it adds up quickly. I searched the website for another ride close to home, and located the ones in Asheville, and Charlotte, NC. I registered for the Asheville ride, and learned the meeting place was the Cascade/Homegrown Lounge on Amboy Road in Asheville. The ride was scheduled to leave at noon, and head to Marshall High Studios in Marshall, NC with a regroup stop at Ledges Park, on River Road in Woodfin, NC. The route runs next to the French Broad River for most of the ride. It is a very scenic, and relaxing ride – perfect for the slow pace required for the vintage motorcycles. I had no idea where the meeting place was, so I went on-line to Rand-McNally, and it showed the best way to get there. I left home at about 8:30 heading west on Rt 74. After topping off the gas tank, I was on my way. It was a refreshingly cool morning with a bright blue cloudless sky. I looked very dapper in my white shirt, black leather vest, and black leather zipper tie. Continued On Page 16

I continued heading west on Rt 74 and followed it onto I26. Traffic was relatively light until I got close to Asheville. I veered to the right onto I240 and exited at Exit 1C (Amboy Road). The meeting place was only a mile or so on the left. When I pulled into the lot, I was guided to the back but told the man that I wasn’t going on the run but just take pictures and write about it. After I parked, I

He was very busy making sure that everything went like clockwork. One way that he’s covering the additional expenses was by selling t-shirts and patches. There was a tent set up for that. He also had a group of volunteers who helped with all the little stuff in the ride. I watched as more and more riders rode in filling the space used for parking the bikes. It was getting a little cramped. I was also watching for any

Harley Shovelhead. At 12:00, Ed gathered everybody to give them the safety speech. It can be dangerous riding in a group especially when you don’t know the other riders. Then, the ride got underway. Ed led the way followed by a beautiful bright red Ferrari. The rest of the bikes followed them. This year, 113,809 dapper ladies and gents rode their bikes through over 500 cities in 92 countries and raised an incredible amount of awareness and funding for Men’s Health, with the current total at $5,483, 963.00 on their way to the 2019 goal of $6M. The Asheville ride alone raised $6,435.00. When they all left, I headed home. I rode east on I-40. Then I rode to Shelby on Rt 226. It was a fun ride home that got increasingly warmer. It was cool up on the mountain but down on the flatlands, it was in the 90’s. When I arrived at about 2:15, I was tired.

Cancer Benefit Ride For Stefanie VanSchaack

By: Roland Cargill n Saturday, October 12, 2019, Raging Bull Harley-Davidson of Durham, NC hosted a Cancer Benefit Ride for Stefanie VanSchaack. Stefanie is a 33 year old single mother that was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Squamous Cell Carcinoma, a type of mouth cancer. She underwent major surgery and has just completed chemo and radiation therapy. Stefanie is the granddaughter of Roland Cargill, a member of the Bull City HOG Chapter. The benefit ride was escorted by Sergeant Talley and Deputies Hall and Stewart of the Durham County Sheriff’s Department, who did their normal excellent job of taking us on a safe and pleasant country ride in northern Durham County.

Hosted by the Southern Gentlemen MC, the Creekside Rally is held on a nice private country property, in Gaston County, NC, where bikers could catch up with friends and party for the weekend. The rally starts Friday afternoon as folks ride in to set up camp and vendor spots. By dark the party is on. The rockin’ band “Shrapnyl” took the stage that night to kick the party in high gear. Saturday was about as nice a day as bikers can have to hang out in the shade enjoying cold beverages with friends. We talked about rides and rallies from the summer, checked out each other’s bikes and found out

who’s going to be at the drag races and fall parties. Yeah, there were some vendors selling those biker things that ain’t in Wally World and some good food, too. The Bob Karney Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer --- ladies were at Creekside handing out the latest cool SWAG. I got some tickets on the sweet dressed

up Sportster the Gaston County Toy Run folks are raffling off. That afternoon Magic Mike and the guys put on some bike games to entertain folks. John won the slow ride against a field of serious riders, but he did bring a biker games machine that performed well and the smoky leaks kept competitors in a haze.

Tina hopped on the back of John’s bike to win biker beer pong. That’s slam a beer and then toss in the trash can while riding by, grab another beer and race to the finish trash can. Flossie Mae took the waitress game riding with Mike Cline. The fishin’ pole weenie bite rig was super simple this year. No Duct tape needed. Biggin held it steady, sorta. The thermometer is a good new modification for quick weenie changes. Anywho, John was the slut of the day letting any hot lady on his bike for the games. Pebbles got a big bite and was crowned the Weenie Queen at the Creekside Rally. The property is well laid out with lots of room for camping. A nice stage faces an area to dance and the bar and tables where folks can enjoy the bands. Saturday night “Skyn Deep” took the stage to crank up the party. Creekside is such a cool site for a bike rally. It’s very private and a short ride from Charlotte, Hickory, Gastonia, Statesville and other Carolina towns. The Southern Gentlemen have been holding this rally for seven years and do both Spring and Fall rallies. Admission is only $20 for the whole weekend. Y’all ride on down to the creek when they do it again in 2020.

Miss Donna’s Birthday Poker Run By: Wally Wersching On Saturday, October 12th, the Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) held their annual Miss Donna’s Birthday Poker Run to benefit the Hospice of Cleveland and Rutherford Counties. Miss Donna was married to one of the CCIB members. After she passed away, they honor her memory by holding a poker run on her birthday for her favorite charity. This year’s event was held at the CCIB clubhouse on Washburn Switch Road in Shelby, NC. The registration started at 10a.m. with the first bike out at 11, and the last bike in at 3p.m. The stops were: first – East Coast Cycle in Forest City, C. The second card would be drawn at Metrolina Motorsports in Kings Mountain, NC. The third stop was at VFW Post 4066 on Sumpter Road in Shelby, NC. The fourth stop was at the Windjammers Clubhouse on Nalley Road in Shelby. The last stop was back at the CCIB clubhouse where there would be hot dogs with all the fixin’s. Later, at 8p.m., the band “Peace-

Pipe” would be rockin’ on the bandstand behind the clubhouse. All the proceeds go to the Hospice of Cleveland and Rutherford Counties. After riding back roads to the clubhouse, I arrived at about 9:45a.m. It was a little chilly. I was glad that I wore my old Vanson leather jacket. There were only a couple bikes parked

in front of the clubhouse when I arrived. I walked in and placed a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines on the bar for all to share. They were glad to see the article about the CCIB Jace Man Run on page 50. Later, “Grumpy” walked into the bar, and we talked for a long time. He’s a very interesting person. We have a lot in common. Afterwards, I walked outside to see “Crow” and “Legs” ride up. Amy (“Legs”) is a close friend of my daughter-in-law. They work together at the post office. The first time I met Amy was at my son’s wedding. Amy and I walked down the aisle together. We were both in the bridal party. We probably looked a little funny because she’s a tall young lady, and I’m a short old man. I met a young man who was not a CCIB member. He was riding a Harley Sportster Custom with a 21” front wheel. As we talked, he told me that he didn’t like the way the bike handled. I told him that a 19” Harley front wheel will bolt on in place of the 21, and make the bike handle much better. He said that he’d look into it. Maybe the next time I see him, there will be a 19” front wheel on his bike, and a smile on his face. I know that the 19” front wheel worked for me when I had my Sportster. In a few minutes, I saw “Smitty”. We talked for a short time.

He was getting ready to go to one of the stops. “Grumpy” went to another stop. There has to be a CCIB club member at every stop to validate the drawing of the cards. As we all waited for the start of the ride, the weather warmed up. Many of the bikers were shedding their leathers and stuffing them into their saddlebags. Then all were called together for a few words. First, “Crow”, the road captain, talked about safety, and then there was a prayer to ask for protection for all the riders. I walked across the road to get pictures of the group when they left. The sun was in the right place to take pictures, too. Many times, the sun is behind the bikers, and the pictures don’t turn out too well. This time it was just right. The command to start the bikes was given, and the silence of the morning was changed to the roar of Harley- Davidsons. “Crow” and “Legs” were the first bike out then all the other bikes followed. It only took a few minutes for all to leave. A few stayed back for the next group to leave in an hour. Individuals could leave whenever they wanted. They didn’t have to go in a group. I said good-by to all who stayed behind, and headed home. I took Cindy out for a delicious lunch and stayed around the house for the rest of the day.

New Biker Church In Wake County By Gail Britt

fter retiring from the secular world and taking the trip of a

lifetime cross country in 2018 Pastor Floyd Baker and his wife Brenda were under strong conviction to plant a biker church. The only question was, where? Pastor Floyd served as the Missions Pastor at Freedom Biker Church in Clayton for 5 years. He witnessed personally and was told by a number of bikers how they loved to visit Freedom but the distance from their home prevented them from attending services on a regular basis. After attending several local bike events, in the fall of 2018, it became very clear that Wake County was the place. Capital City Biker Church was incorporated in January 2019 with a stated focus on ministering to bikers and veterans. A small bible study began in the Baker’s home in March as the roots were being planted on which the new church could grow. They have been blessed with a mature and Godly leadership team to direct the affairs and ministry of the church. Nashville recording artist Louie Allen felt the Lord’s call to serve as the worship leader. Louie provides a traditional mix of gospel and country gospel music every Sunday morning. Since forming in 1953, The McCullers Ruritan Club has made their clubhouse available for many beginning churches. In May, Capital City Biker Church partnered with the club where services are now being held. The building is centrally

located between Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, Cary, Apex and Garner. Pastor Floyd began a lifelong relationship with the club starting as a boy scout, playing on the little league team and upon returning from military service he became a member, holding various positions, prior to leaving the Raleigh area in 1989 for a new career. The church is not affiliated with any organized denomination though it maintains a traditional Baptist doctrine. Being non-affiliated allows the church to invest their tithe in the local community verses paying into denomination national, regional or local offices. As of this writing Capital City Biker Church has invested $7,000.00 into biker supported charities and direct support to veterans and veterans’ groups in 2019. 2019 Myrtle Beach Fall Bike Week At The Rat Hole

By: Scott Wicker t’s always a fun time when Bike Week at Myrtle Beach comes around, spring or fall. This year’s fall edition was extremely unusual with outside temperatures in the 90’s one day and in the 70’s the next. As usual, a great crowd gathered at one of the most exciting venues of any Myrtle Beach Bike Week; The Rat Hole! Located just off Hwy 17 Bypass on Hwy 707 in Socastee, the Rat Hole always delivers with all of their unique activities and hospitality. The contests held daily are the main attractions of the Rat Hole. As the Cowboy always says, “Rodeo by Day, Contest by Night”! Everything gets started everyday around 2pm, when the rodeo contestants take to the field each day for the rodeo events. Participants from all over the eastern United States make their way to the Rat Hole. Events include the keg roll, the slow race, the barrel race, the waitress carry, pick ‘em up & put ‘em down, the balloon toss, and the weenie bite. In the Slow Race, 6 Rodeo Riders line up in 6 evenly spaced lanes. The object of the slow race is to get to the end of your lane,

LAST! You must keep your bike in your lane and your feet on your pegs. The last cowboy, or cowgirl, to cross the finish line without putting their feet down or letting their bike get out of their lane, wins. Each event takes an enormous amount of skill and a ton of concentration. At the end of each day’s rodeo events, more excitement begins. That’s when the pudding wrestling matches start! Pretty girls are put in a specially designed pool containing chocolate pudding and they wrestle each other until one girl can pin the other. If that isn’t enough, the activities move inside to the main bar for the grown folks! Contests include the “Fake at 8”, hide the weenie, hot buns, and the wet T-Shirt contest. Never a dull moment! Gotham City Bike Fest 2019 Story And Photos By: Alan Dockery he weekend of September 27 & 28 Harley Bagger Drags and more went down at the Gotham City Bike Fest presented by RMJ Promotions and Kadafe Entertainment. The latest race in the evolution of street-type drags was held at Fayetteville Motor Sports Park Dragstrip and sponsored by Baker American Cycles, Southern Boy Baggers, Carter Racing and Lowry Farms. All cruisers and sport bikes were welcome since we all like to ride, race and have fun. Friday the racers and sponsors started setting up along the pits at the well laid out drag strip. There were some test and tune passes and a few grudge races that night. Generally it was laid back and time for hanging out with friends. The crowd started riding in Saturday and by lunch the Gotham City Bike Fest was jamming with race bikes ready to roll and activities were happening all over the property. Gotham City Bike Fest was the third race in Roger Edgerton’s Hogs Gone Wild Bagger Racing Series. Since a few of the classes are real

street-legal bikes, Roger lead them on a local ride to prove they are more than just quarter mile queens. While the strip was being prepared and race bikes readied, there was plenty for folks to enjoy with vendors and exhibits and more. There was more competition than just on the strip, too. Team Money Cycles hosted the Southern Sound Showdown. There were classes for Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight sound systems. That ain’t my thang, but I was impressed by the custom bikes and the extensive work some folks put into their music systems. I was also amazed at how clean, crisp and LOUD they can be. There was a special all female Tent Talk, too, that part of the Gotham City Bike Fest focused on women riders. They may have been racing Harley Baggers, but the stunt show guys showed up with little Honda Groms. They had a couple of hopped up Groms, too and made a bunch of quick passes down the drag strip on those little machines. Once the action got started on the strip, the fans were ready for a show. They got a good one, too since the only race bikes with wheelie bars were in the ET Class. This is Street Bagger racing with frame, front end, wheelbase and tire rules. Fans who like wheelies got plenty of them. Some of the machines were blown with turbos and superchargers. As the turbos built boost and the bikes hooked up, they were lifting the front wheel way down the strip. Right in front of the spectators who cheered them on. To me, the big attraction was a match race between two of the baddest, coolest, quickest Harley Baggers on planet Earth. Assim “Kadafe” Chaudhry brought his machine known as “King Kong” since he had been challenged by John Ca-

Built by Gregg Dahl of GMS Racing, the awesome machine may be retired as a winner since Kadafe is going Top Fuel Harley racing soon. Saturday night the crowd packed the starting line as the final rounds wound down. Bo Prez, from Michigan, won the Street

Gotham City Bike Fest All Female Tent Talk

By: Chi n September 28th RMJ Promotions and Gotham City Bike Fest presented the “All Female Tent Talk” for 2019. The event was held at Fayetteville Motorsports Park Drag Strip at 4480 Doc Bennett Road in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Female riders registered for the event with many perks. The registration fee included a female goodie bag as well as an All-female Tent Talk 2019 t-shirt. The ladies took part in a meet and greet brunch between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. featuring motivational speakers; Lil Tigger, Sunshine, and White Chocolate. These lady riders discussed the female culture in the biking world. Lady bikers are shifting gears in the motorcycle world and these ladies are helping to spread the word. The speakers discussed all-female rides that are taking place all over the US and more rides are upcoming. These ladies are taking a new and more dedicated approach to female riders. There were also discussions about safety and good practices that women should take very seriously. Women are taking these roles and making them work for them. We, as females,

have to be just as cautious as any other motorcycle rider and we have the same obstacles to overcome each time we ride. It’s always important to ride defensively especially when you’re at intersections. We have to be cautious of other drivers and make sure that they see us and hear us roar! Loud pipes save lives! You’ve all heard it before! It is a strategy that is used because the louder your pipes are the more likely you’ll be noticed by other drivers.

And last but not least, why do we ride? We ride for the same reasons that males ride. Whether it is about independence, freedom, self-confidence, unity, or community, we ride with tenacity and ownership. We make ourselves known and we cherish being one with our bikes. We may have a favorite color. We personalize them with our special touch...and we just ride!

By: Lincoln Infield iding High Harley-Davidson in High Point, NC hosted the starting point for the Ride 4 Recovery. I had an afternoon event to cover, so I stopped by to shoot some pictures and see the ride off. Set up out front were the friendly folks from Fellowship Hall Drug / Alcohol Recover Center with very welcoming registration table. Smiles, wrist bands, biscuits and hot coffee were available upon registration. I was introduced to Altina Laymen who is the Director of Development at Fellowship Hall and she had all the warmth that you would expect from a person in her position. She let me know that they were going to go on a nice ride through the country and end at the Fellowship Hall. Fellowship Hall is a 99-bed, private, 501(c)(3) non-profit

alcohol and drug treatment center located in Greensboro, N.C. They provide treatment and evidence-based programs built on the Twelve-Step model of recovery. Fellowship Hall has been accredited by The Joint Commission since 1974 as a specialty hospital and are a member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers and are committed to providing exceptional, compassionate care to every individual they serve. The ride had a full police escort that day, which always provides a seamless ride. As the riders gathered, I noticed that there were a good number of Elks Club Riders. Altina mentioned that they receive a lot of support from the Elks Riders and that they had a gift for the Fellowship Hall waiting on them at the end of the ride. The Elks Club came through big and donated a hefty check to support the Ride 4 Recovery.

28th Annual Jim McClure All Harley Nitro World Finals At The Rock Story And Photos By: Alan Dockery he second weekend in October started as pretty as you can have for a Carolina fall, but Sunday afternoon showers stopped the roar and thunder of the AMRA All Harley World Finals at Rockingham Dragway when the American Motorcycle Racing Association came to North Carolina. Fans there on Saturday enjoyed hours of thunder down the strip, while The Rock hosted the 28th Annual Jim McClure All Harley Nitro World Finals featuring the Ray Price Top Fuel Challenge. There ain’t many better ways a biker can spend a fall weekend than at the Harley Drags. I was glad to see so many of y’all camped for the weekend. The camping crowd seems to be growing again. I saw folks from my county and bikers I ain’t seen in years who drove hours to The Rock. Several clubs and groups of friends had nice camps with cover and RVs. Some bikers still ride in and pitch a tent in the shade to enjoy racing all day plus cool air and campfires with friends at night. There are lots of races at The Rock, but the Harley Drags are special. Saturday morning was cool and clear, providing great racing conditions and lots of bikes were ready for a morning test and tune session. Qualifying started at noon with some cool machines in the staging lanes. I was glad to see so many folks in the stands early for the first round of qualifying. They got to enjoy the gas bikes and wheelies down the strip. Bikers into nitromethane-fueled motorcycles were smiling since there were at least 30 fuel bikes there ready to rip down the Rockingham strip. Some of the machines that compete in

the National Hot Rod Association Mickey Thompson Top Fuel Harley series were there and fans can walk the pits to check out the machines up close. Qualifying went smoothly with the usual oil downs and issues that needed to be cleaned up. The Rock is an awesome drag strip, but third round, the sun going down makes us take a short break as it hits just the wrong spot on the track and Christmas Tree, but once action resumes, the evening glow makes beautiful photos. AMRA Ray Price Top Fuel Challenge A third of the Top Fuel field at The Rock was competing for the AMRA Ray Price Top Fuel Trophy was from the Carolinas. Jay Turner brought the Bobby Buckley ProCharger bike Lucky Number Seven, the seventh Bulldog out to wow fans. It is a very impressive machine. Fans were thrilled to see the bike in-person and experience the sights, sounds, smells and vibrations when Jay fired it up. Will this be the first Harley fuel bike to make a five second pass? Tii Tharpe, East Bend, NC, was the star of the pits since he had recently won the NHRA Top Fuel Championship for a second time. Tii qualified in the number one spot with a 6.325 second pass at 223.91 mph. Tyler Wilson, Walnut Cove, NC, has moved up to riding a Jay Turner Top Fuel machine. Tracy Kile, Asheville, NC, had his Bad Apple Racing bike there. Michael Beland, Maiden, NC, had his new A-1 Cycles Top Fuel Harley at The Rock. He was looking real good until a spectacular explosion at the starting line.

Hot Street machines are just a second slower and still fun to watch. Jonathan Cole, North Augusta, SC, reps the Carolinas in the Hot Street class. Freddy Frazier, Sanford, NC, qualified number one in the S/C 8.90 index class. The S/G 9.90 class saw Joe Petersen, Wilmington, NC, and Gregory Hawog, Nakina, NC, make the field. Rick Medford, Cherokee, NC, was in the S/P 10.30 class. The P/E 10.90 class saw Dean Frank, Ramseur, NC, Todd Dillon, Jonathan Cole and Rick Medford in competition. Bikers For Kim By: Wally Wersching n Friday night,October11th, I visited the Windjammers clubhouse to drop off a few of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines to share with the club members. While talking to “Hangman” (the president of the club), he told me about a breakfast and bake sale benefit that was happening at the Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) clubhouse for Kim Parker from 8a.m. to noon on Saturday the 12th. Kim fell at home and broke her wrist in a couple places so she cannot work. I’ve known Kim for over 30 years. I worked with her when I first moved here from Chicago. After I got laid off, we kept in touch. At one time, I worked with her husband “King”. She is very friendly, and always has a smile on her face. Her last job was as a waitress. I decided to go to the Cleveland County Independent Bikers clubhouse but not eat breakfast there. I always eat breakfast at the Crestview Baptist Church on the “1st Saturday” of each month. After I was done at the church, I went over to the CCIB clubhouse on Washburn Switch Road. On the way over, I encountered a little drizzle–not a lot, but enough to get wet and make the road slippery. I arrived at about 8:15a.m. and dropped some money in the jar for Kim. One of the first people I saw at the benefit was “Mrs. B”. I

Kim Parker & Mrs.B worked with her, too when I first moved here. She’s been associated with the CCIB for many years. I looked into the kitchen and saw members of the local Concerned Bikers Association (CBA) cooking and serving the food. It smelled great! The man cooking the sausage and bacon was really suffering from the heat. When he stuck his head out the door, he thoroughly enjoyed the cool breeze.

There were only a couple bikers who rode to the event. The weather was cool and threatening. A couple Windjammers rode in. The Windjammers and the CCIB really work together to ensure that their events are successful. After a little while, a large group from the Royal Priesthood Motorcycle Ministry rode in. They were all smiles; eager to help Kim and get at the food. There was a line to get the food after that. I saw Kim after she drove up. Her right arm was in a cast, but she was still smiling. Kim and “Mrs. B” got together for a picture. It’s always good to see old friends. After all was said and done, Kim received almost $1,300.00. She couldn’t stop thanking everyone. The money will help to pay some of her bills. I imagine that she felt blessed to have so many friends come to her aid when she needed it. I left, and headed home. Cindy and I were babysitting for our 18 month old granddaughter. It’s always fun to have her for the day.

4th Annual Motorcycles For Mammograms Breast Cancer Ride

By: Joy Hicks n Saturday October 12th,Cox’s Harley-Davidson held the 4th Annual Motorcycles for Mammograms Breast Cancer Ride. It was a beautiful day and we were blessed that 75 motorcycles came out to spend their day with us. (There were 20 other rides listed in the Carolinas ‘Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for that day). Angie Ward from radio station WTQR was our Master of Ceremonies and rode on the ride. She travels here from Atlanta every year and this year she donated a guitar autographed by Brothers Osborne for the silent auction. Express. Food was donated by Food Lion and was being served by volunteers from The Randolph Health Cancer Center. It was a great day and a lot of money was raised for the Randolph Health Mammogram fund which pays for individuals who are uninsured or under-insured in Randolph County to receive mammograms. Early detection saves lives. Since the Mammogram Fund was set up in 2010 $465,980 has been raised and 3,462 screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasound exams have been provided to individuals in Randolph County. We have raised $7,748, so far this year for the Mammogram Fund. Cox’s Harley-Davidson still has t-shirts for sale and once we sell all of the t-shirts, we will exceed $8,000. 8th Annual Tim Diffin Memorial Riding With The Angels By: Chi Force he 8th Annual Tim Diffin Memorial Riding with the Angels was held at the Doghouse on September 28, 2019. The ride preparation includes many helping hands. Bikers And Needy Children (B.A.N.C.) organizes the ride each year. B.A.N.C. is a federally recognized non-profit organization. They are always eager and willing to help those in need. The memorial ride is held in honor of Tim Diffin. The memorial represents his love for riding as well as giving back to the community. Tim is remembered, celebrated, cherished and honored; as this event continues each year. All proceeds are given directly to Cumberland County Department of Social Services (DSS) to sponsor Christmas gifts for the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Foster Children Program. The crowd completed the normal poker run; of which a cash prize was awarded to the biggest winner and the biggest loser. As the bikers returned for the celebratory dinner, raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets were sold. Live music was played through-

out the entire dinner. Additional items were auctioned in the mist of the crowd after the meal was served. Special thanks to everyone that participated in the auction. There were a number of specialty items that were crafted especially for this noble cause.

Tilley Harley-Davidson Of Salisbury Biker Blues & BBQ Rally By: Lincoln Infield eptember 21 was one of those Ride To Eat, Eat To Ride kind of days. Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury was my destination as they were hosting the Biker Blues & BBQ Rally and BBQ Classic. Now, living this close to Lexington, NC, the BBQ capital of the world, makes you connoisseur of BBQ without you even knowing it. Let’s face it, if you live around Lexington, you have had the best BBQ you can ever have. The Biker Blues & BBQ event is a great way to get your taste buds wrapped around a dozen or so different BBQ recipes. Gary Moss has been running this show for almost a decade and has brought a mighty tasty time to Tilley’s H-D of Salisbury. The actual party starts early in the week as a couple dozen different BBQ teams get set up in Tilley’s back parking lot. But this isn’t any normal back yard BBQ. These cooking teams are competing for the Kansas City BBQ Society & NC State Barbecue Championship, and they mean business. They spend the better half of the week getting set up and cooking some awesome BBQ. The publicized party started on Friday September 20 with ven-

dors, and live music by Darrell Harwood. Saturday is the big day and starts off with a 9am charity poker run sponsored by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. The ride heads up to Tilley HD in Statesville and is escorted back to the Salisbury dealership. The ride that supports the Salisbury VA Hospice Unit & the “No Veteran Dies Alone” program had a $250 gift card for best hand and $100 gift card for worst hand. Tilley H-D of Salisbury is maybe a mile off of I-85, but by the time I got off the highway I could smell BBQ in the air and my mouth was watering by the time I pulled in the parking lot. The parking lot is blocked off for motorcycles only, and it’s a good thing since the vendors fill the lot in front of the building. I immediately ran into Tilley’s media specialist and photographer extraordinaire: Mike Rummage and he took

me into the KCBS judging room where judging had already begun. Thanks for the tour, Mike! Honestly, I had no idea this was such a serious item. The room was full but almost silent for the concentration of the trained BBQ tasters. Apparently, these tasters come from all up and down the east coast to dif-

ferent BBQ Society events. These poor souls were faced with tasting and judging BBQ chicken, ribs, BBQ pork and brisket. It’s a tough job. Speaking of tough jobs, the cooking teams that were competing that day are said to cook upwards of a dozen racks of ribs just to get a few perfect rib bones for judging. The good news of that is that the rest go as samples and let me tell you, they all scored high marks with this “judge”. There were a ton of familiar faces in the crowded parking lot and it took me a while to get to the People’s Choice BBQ Tasting area that was inside the H.O.G. room. I found event coordinator Gary Moss in there and he directed me to the tasting samples. Anyone can vote in the people’s choice contest, just walk up and some of the awesome Salisbury H.O.G. volunteers hooked you up with a tray with 9 one ounce cups of different BBQ and a bottle of water to cleanse your pallet between different BBQ’s. While judging, I was joined by the likes of Shannon and Dexter Rights of the Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group. It is always awesome to spend some time with them. I systematically picked my favorite out of the 9 I

tasted, dropped the cup from my favorite que in the official “ballet box” and headed back out to the party! Steve Bost was the musical talent for the afternoon, and he was keeping everyone rocking with a little help from Rick the Human Jukebox. I usually see Rick down at the World Famous Tank Town Tavern in Charlotte, but none the less, that guy rocks! The awards were handed out at 5pm and Wolf’s Revenge BBQ From Henrico, Virginia took home the Grand Champion award, followed by K&D Smokers and Palmetto Pitmasters respectively. By this time, it was getting on in the afternoon and I was ready to get back on the bike. My belly was full of delicious BBQ, I had hung out with a bunch of friends and partied the afternoon away. Congratulations to all the BBQ teams for putting out some delicious que, Gary Moss for coordinating another great event and Tilley’s HD for being amazing hosts. Benefit Ride For Brandon Wallace By:Lisa Lopez (LL’s Magic Lenz) randon Wallace is 30 years old. Too young to have had a stroke. After going to the doctor, the medical staff thought it was Bell’s Palsy. A week later he started having stroke-like symptoms while at work at Ben’s V-Twins, his current employer, and was instructed to go to the emergency room. After many tests, the doctors discovered he had a hidden blood clot at his brain stem, which resulted in a stroke. He was in ICU for 72 hours and was in the hospital for over a week, then was transported to a rehab center for a week’s stay. Brandon takes care of his parents and was told that he will not be able to work full time and with no insurance, will incur a large amount of medical bills. In the motorcycle community, Brandon is known as the “go to” mechanic and several people wanted to do something to help. With Ben of Ben’s V-Twins, his good friend Jeff, and LL›s Magic Lenz, we organized a benefit ride on October 13, 2019. Although it was a rainy day, several motorcycles showed up at Ben’s V-Twins in Indian Trail, NC at noon, and all the stops were made 1st stop was Pineville Tavern, the 2nd stop McKoy’s Smokehouse & Saloon, 3rd stop Mac’s Speed Shop (Steelcreek) and finally Papa Doc’s Shore Club, where the band “The Smilin’ Dogs” & DJ Kristi Keziah Swanson made it a rocking good time! All that fun, the weather, and we still managed to raise enough to get Brandon through the next several months. A few minutes later, he got into the Uber all hot and bothered, and said (to my growing horror and amusement) as the car pulled away, “Sorry it took so long but the stupid bitch was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her ass with a coat hanger to get her to come out. She tried to take off, so I grabbed her by the neck and wrapped her in a blanket so she wouldn’t scratch me like she did last time. But it worked! I hauled her fat ass down the stairs and threw her out into the back yard…she had better not shit in the vegetable garden again.” The silence in the Uber was deafening.

Love you, too.” We visited our newly married daughter, who was preparing her first Thanksgiving dinner. I noticed the turkey thawing in the kitchen sink with a dish drainer inverted over the bird. I asked why a drainer covered the turkey. Our daughter turned to my wife and said, “Mom, you always did it that way.” “Yes,” my wife replied, “But you don’t have a cat!”

Miss Beatrice, the church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married. She was admired for her sweetness and kindness to all. 1st Annual Vets For Vets Charity Run By: JoAnn Wilson n Saturday, October 12, a simple ride thru the countryside of Rowan county along with parts of Iredell county raised money to go to the local DAV chapter of Salisbury, NC The members of Chapter 96 of the DAV are a great group of folks who truly put the needs and necessities of our sick and ailing veterans first. The local store marketer for Golden Corral of Lexington, JoAnn Wilson, along with her husband William Wilson who is not only a DAV member of Chapter 96, but the Vice-President

of an area riding club called Freedom Cruisers Chapter 143 who are no strangers to charity events. A huge amount of the Freedom Cruisers not only came and supported the ride, but handled blocking, safety, tail gunner, etc. so that everyone could return with no incidents. The ride itself was approximately 48 miles long which folks seemed to like as it was not too long or too short. The non-stop loop around the countryside started from and returned to the

Bill Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury. Upon return, there was a food truck onsite with hotdogs, French fries, and drinks available to the riders based on donations provided by Golden Corral of Lexington. A 50/50 drawing concluded the day’s activities. $817 was raised and presented to Chapter 96 of the DAV. Next year’s ride will be held on October 3,2020.

The Needs Of A Few Answered By Many By: Rick Gammons

am exceedingly proud to be a part of the biker

community in this area. Many people are doing great things to help those who are less fortunate than we are. That was, and still is the idea that Rusty and Jana, the owners of Trax Tavern in Thomasville, NC have for disabled young people in the community and, this year, to the tune of over $16,000! There are few, if any, around here that can top that number. This is a yearly event. Every fall, in September, Trax does this event for Thomas and Owen. Owen passed at age two. He was born with Septal Dysplasia and Panhypopituitarism. This child died from complications due to these conditions. A fund was created at the Davie Community Foundation by his grandparents, which is awarded annually to a person earning advanced degrees in programs that benefit children with special needs. It also offers wheelchairs, braces and other equipment necessary to help young people cope with their afflictions. Thomas (now 12) helps to support studies aimed to prevent Cerebral Palsy. These studies could eventually help him. Also, some of this money is designated to Special Olympics of

Davidson County to help special youth to do amazing things at their Olympic-style events. If you can attend one, you will see that these young athletes give their all. Rusty starts the weekend with riders who care. Two hundred dollars will get you included on this ride to Myrtle Beach arriving at a house donated for the weekend. I’ve never been on this ride, but I know they have an excellent time. The proceeds

from this ride make up over half of the money raised for the entire weekend. Now on Sunday, the riders are back, and an awesome auction is scheduled. There were SO many things donated... like guitars, HD boots, neon bar lights, helmets, apparel, knives, beer signs, coolers, NASCAR and gift cards. All the things a biker needs. Not used stuff, but the things bikers want to spend money on. There were enough people there to pack Trax Tavern, as usual. I enjoy this auction more than any other because of the quality of the items offered. It’s great that these people invest their money to help these disabled youth who have problems that we cannot imagine.

By: Lincoln Infield iva Viclas! is a celebration and exploration of the art and culture of the lowrider motorcycle hosted by the Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) in Raleigh, NC. Vicla is a slang term for a style of lowrider motorcycle customization popularized by Chicanos/Mexican-Americans and is derived from the Spanish word for bicycle—bicicleta. The exhibition features 10 custom lowrider Harley-Davidson motorcycles and 12 artworks inspired by themes in Vicla culture including heart, pride, brotherhood, and respect.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening night of Viva Viclas by Bob Karney; “The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer”, who sponsored “Evil Ways,” one of the bikes on display. I got there early so I could get up close with these beautiful baggers and get some exclusive shots before the event opened. I was glad that I did. I have to say that these were the most ornate motorcycles I have ever seen. A few of the bikes had etching on 95% of the chrome. The pipes, levers, wheels and engine absolutely covered in etching. The paint jobs were also over the top with vibrant color, amazing murals, blasting metal flake and pinstriping to set it all off. They truly were and eyeful The Show opened to the public at 6p.m. and art lovers piled in. The DJ was playing Latino type tunes and I even heard him mix in “War’s” timeless hit “low rider” which was totally fitting. Raleigh high society and bikers mixed in the open air gallery to view the 10 “Viclas”. There were no velvet ropes or obstructions, it was an open room with bikes arranged in the middle. Each bike had its “story” on the floor in front of it giving you a little insight into its theme, its owner and where it came from. Most of these bikes were from the Western United States. Being opening night, some of the bike owners were on hand as well. The CAM had a bar set up with various wines, lime water and further back they were serving some traditional south

western food. To compliment the atmosphere there were 12 artworks inspired by themes in Vicla culture including heart, pride, brotherhood, and respect, hanging on the walls around the gallery. It really was an experience! Near the end of the night they took a moment to give recognition to those who helped get this exhibit together. Mark Hendrix, General Manager of Tobacco Road H-D and Bob Karney of the Karney Law Firm were among those mentioned. The exhibit will be at the CAM through February 2020 and is really worth viewing. Bragg Harley-Davidson goes pink for the month of October. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). They sponsored a number of events to celebrate those that fought and those that continue to fight. The events hosted included Tutus and Tatas, Tatas and Tailpipes, and Light up Fayetteville Pink to name a few. Cancer awareness month is an international health campaign where major cancer charities work to raise money for research aimed towards the diagnosis, prevention, cause, treatment and cure for cancer. The entire month of October is dedicated to stressing the importance of early screening and educating everyone about the disease. Traditionally, we would think about breast cancer awareness applying only to females. However recent studies and recent media campaigns are reporting an increase in the number of males affected. Males also suffer from breast cancer and early detection is a factor that significantly affects treatment options for both male and female. Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson certainly set their calendar to support breast cancer awareness to include everyone, male and ort

cer. Some people wore t-shirts to honor their lost loved ones. While the true message was breast cancer awareness, so the others do not have to lose their loved ones to this disease. It has been said before that there is always a party at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson. Their “Pinkout” month was certainly a celebration and party for many. The community whole-heartedly supported the events and as a result many dollars went towards fighting cancer. We all stand ready and in support to “Fight for a Cure” and “Stomp out Cancer.” Go…Fight…Win!

Last CFR Sonic Bike Night Of 2019

By: Wally Wersching he Carolina Faith Riders sponsor a bike night at the Forest City, NC Sonic restaurant every Tuesday evening during the summer months starting at 6:30p.m. I went to one a month since May, so it stands to reason that I should go to the last one on September 24th. The people there are very friendly, and the food is pretty good, too. I left home about 5:30p.m. heading west on Rt 74 from Shelby. After a few miles, I veered to the right onto Rt 74A. After a couple stoplights, I turned left into the Sonic parking lot. I looked around as I pulled in and saw that I was the first to arrive. After I parked, I sat, and read a magazine while I waited for the rest to come. After they arrived, I started to visit with the people who were there and gave

out a few of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines. More bikes pulled in, and before I knew it, the tables were full. Some of the people drove their cars because they came straight from work. Other people drove because it’s getting dark earlier, and they wanted to stay later to make the night last longer without having to ride their bike home in the dark. I met a few friends along with Mike, who used to be the president of the CFR, and is now the pastor of the Full Throttle Biker Church in Mooresboro. We had a very pleasant talk about a little of everything, but mostly motorcycles, and places we rode this summer. I enjoy watching the bikes pull in, and then going talk to the rider about his bike especially if the bike is unusual. I watched as Daryl rode in on his (new to him) 2013 Honda Gold Wing F6B. It looks like it’s going 60 mph just sitting there. It sounded great, too. The engine has some very quick revs. Daryl went to Virginia to get it and is really enjoying it. There was a trailer with a 2003 Harley-Davidson fat Boy that was being raffled off for the Polk County Toy Run – just $5.00 per ticket. The drawing will be on November 29th in Saluda, NC. Then a young man started to sing while playing his guitar. He sounded pretty good. It was the first time they had live entertainment that I knew about. I wanted to get home in time to walk the dog, so I left for home about 6:45. The ride home was refreshingly cool with the sun going down in my mirrors. It was a great way to spend an evening with friends. I will miss the CFR Sonic Bike Nights until they start again next May.
