ou are reading issue #195 of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Just to put things in perspective, think about what you were doing in August of 1998? It was a while ago, I know. Can you remember? I can. We had very little idea about what we were getting into when we started The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Can you imagine a time when you were not online? I can! A lot of water has gone over the dam in the last 16 years and it reminds me that we owe a huge thank you to all the advertisers who supported our fledgling effort then and who continue to have faith in us today. The readers also played a huge part in our success and it blesses my heart every time one of you takes the time to tell us that you enjoy the magazine and appreciate our work. It was, and still is, a labor of love. Our whole purpose is to inform the riding community of products available and events in North and South Carolina. Speaking of a labor of love, we cannot forget to mention our office and sales staff. Many of them work with us because they love it. Sure, they get paid, but I am sure it is not the love of money that motivates them, even though sometimes I wish that were more of a factor. So we continue down the path we set out on – producing the finest motorcycle magazine possible and delivering it to the riding community for free. We thank you all and encourage you to contact us if there is ever anything that we can do for you. You can also view the entire magazine, Cruisin’ Calendar, event pictures, and more at FullThrottleMagazine.com and on Facebook. Thank you to everyone who helped make The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine what it is today. Ride - Enjoy – Remember and most of all be careful and safe.

Memorial Service For Don Tilley Story by Alan Dockery Another Harley riding and racing hero is gone. On August 29, William Donald Tilley died in a motorcycle accident on the Blue Ridge Parkway. His wife Robinette survived with serious injuries. Don Tilley was one of my heroes from the time I first started riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and paying attention to racing. He wasn’t the rider going for the wins, but the owner, builder and tuner who put lots of riders in the winner’s circle. I remember the first time I met him as a journalist covering Harley’s efforts in Superbike road racing with the VR-1000. I was thrilled to shake the hand of a legend and eager to hear what he had to say. In the 1950s and 1960s Don raced stock cars, winning on the local tracks such as Hickory. He moved up to NASCAR’s Grand National Circuit running several races, including Daytona. Don even worked for Richard Petty before he and Robinette opened Tilley Harley-Davidson dealership in Statesville in 1972. Recently Don’s attention was back toward stock car racing supporting his grandsons, Chandler LeVan and Kyle Pierce, who are following in their famous grandfather’s footsteps. “I know one thing,” LeVan tweeted. “He’s up in heaven showing Jesus how to pop a wheelie.” But it was fast motorcycles that made him a legend. His riders won lots of races and championships for many years.
Occasionally he would roll some of his race bikes out for display at the dealership during events. It always brought a smile to my face to see guys checking out the race machines, like the famous Lucifer’s Hammer, and telling stories about watching them in action. On September 7, thousands of us converged on Statesville to pay our respects to Don. I rode in on Highway 70 and stopped for a minute at the old dealership. Bikers of all kinds came from all over the East coast to ride in Don’s memorial service. I saw police escort bikes from nearly every county in this area. I don’t know how many motorcycles were there since the road into the dealership was packed and there were hundreds more motorcycles along the route, but estimates are 3,000 or more. Mark, Molly, and I left just before the ride to Statesville High School football stadium for the memorial service so we could photograph people riding in. As we passed through downtown Statesville what brought a tear to my eye was seeing thousands of local people lining the streets. Police, Deputies, State Troopers and Firefighters blocked the intersections, even the I-77 ramps, so the motorcycle procession could pass. We shut down the center of Statesville for more than an hour as the motorcyclists went from the dealership to the school. At the stadium, we filled the home side seats for a touching service. I noticed several people from Harley-Davidson, NASCAR, and the motorcycle racing world in attendance. Over the years I have known and ridden with Don, I’ve become used to seeing celebrities on his rides. No matter how famous Don and his friends are, they were just bikers riding with friends on those days. Special guest speakers for Don’s service were: Mike Helton, NASCAR President; Steve Phillips, former HarleyDavidson Vice President; Donnie Allison, NASCAR and Indy Car driver and Kyle Petty, NASCAR driver. A common thing the speakers mentioned was what a great guy Don was to everyone. He was well known for more than his business and racing, also for his heart and helping others. Many of y’all can tell stories of meeting Don on the road when you needed help and he was the man who came to your aid. Kyle Petty talked about how Don helped create Kyle Petty’s Charity Ride Across America benefitting the Victory Junction Gang Camp. “Don taught me how to ride long distances, love Harleys, and most important how to be a friend,” Petty said. “Even

though I grew up in a house where they drove race cars, I wanted to be Don Tilley. He was everything I wanted to be, and everything I hope to be someday. The longer I knew him, the kinder he became.” The speakers all seemed to talk about more than just Don’s mechanical ability. They mentioned what a great rider he was and how he never seemed to need a map, apparently knowing roads all over America. He was always ready for a good long ride. “Don was the best motorcyclist I’ve ever ridden with in my life,” Phillips said. He talked about him and Don riding in all kinds of weather, too, from blistering heat to rain, snow and cold. Don always pressed on. Phillips said he pictured asking Don if he had any final advice for the bikers who knew and loved him. Don’s answer would have probably been, “Yeah, man. Y’all need to get on with life, having fun and riding motorcycles. And you better do it fast because y’all are burning daylight.” Amen Brother. Those of us who knew him and even people who only knew of him will miss Don Tilley. Please, say a prayer for Don, Robinette and the family. The Tilley family has asked that all donations and memorials be made to the Victory Junction Gang Camp, 4500 Adam’s Way, Randleman, NC, 27317. Visit www.FullThrottleMagazine.com for more photos from the memorial service and past photos of Don.

By: Caroline On Saturday, August 16th, the American Legion Riders from Post 55 put together a poker run for an even bigger event, the American Legion Legacy Run. Around 21 ALR members and guests made a 3 county ride and generated an $800 donation to the Legacy Run. The folks at JR’s Tavern, Double D and Second and Green made us welcome as we stopped to draw cards. We ended our ride at the Legion Post 55 for wings and hotdogs and the announcement that Jill Stokes won $25 for the worst hand, Ken Lewis won $75 for the best and Wendie Lewis won the 50/50. As I said, this poker run was for an even bigger event. On August 19th, the Legion Post 55 graciously served 300 riders lunch. These riders were part of a group of around 600 bikers that began a trip from Indianapolis Sunday August 17th and ended their ride in Kings Mountain, NC Thursday, August 21st. The American Legion Legacy Run raises funds to provide educational scholarships for the children of wounded or deceased veterans from 2001 to the present. This event has received a lot of recognition and support all over the county. I know that the ALR of Post 55 was so proud to be able to host and have a part in this event.

Thunder In The Smokies
By: WildThing …..and a great time was had by all! The Thunder in the Smokies Fall Motorcycle Rally was a success and if you chose not to attend because of inclement weather at home, you missed out on all the fun. The gates opened at 11am on Friday September 12, with all the vendors open for business and the beverages iced down. Ready to Party! Three bands were on the schedule Friday evening starting at 5:30 with Rafe Hollister then at 7:30 The Ryan Perry Band and 9:30 Big Daddy Love was on the roster. Mark and I arrived late and I am sorry to say we were unable to get over to the Festival Grounds to check out the music venue that evening. However, we have heard these bands before and they are all pretty popular and I am sure had the folks toe-tapping. I will also say that Mother Nature was not kind from 6 til about 8:30 as a downpour enveloped the Maggie Valley Inn and most of us were holed up under the front canopy and in the Tiki Bar. Saturday morning, it was overcast, but the roads were dry. Mark & I rode our ’73 HD Servi-Car over to Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum for a short visit as there is always something new to drool over. We arrived at the Festival Grounds when the bike show was starting and the parking area was filling up with bikes. The clouds started breaking up and sunshine peaked through as a preview to a perfect afternoon.
All the rally goers were given a ticket upon entering the gate to be used to vote for their favorite bike in the Peoples Choice Bike Show. This fall, Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group sponsored the show, meaning they would award the winner with a cash prize of $500. There were 24 beautiful motorcycles entered in the bike show, but the real show stopper, the one that garnered the most votes was a beautifully restored 1934 Indian. It belonged to Paul Dimascio from Greer, SC and he was only too happy to stand beside his bike for photos! Next on the agenda were the bike games. These were well attended and the winner of the most games received a $500 cash prize, sponsored by A.I.M. (Aid to Injured Motorcyclists, the Richard Lester network of personal injury attorneys). They did the slow race, weenie bite, bouncy ball race, and can in the haystack competition. These games are really fun to watch and the participants laugh all the way through! After a short break when many of the rally folks go out for a bite to eat, the live music is on the stage starting at 7:30 with The Ryan Perry Band and later on, Eric Beddingfield took the stage. Both acts are great. Mother Nature was fooling with us again. It was not raining, no rain was in the forecast, but the clouds and fog was so low, everything was misted over. This didn’t scare away too many as they were rolling through the gates as the band got cranked up. Thunder in the Smokies was not finished yet – there was a free pancake breakfast Sunday morning with a church service following. The vendors were still on hand and a little background music for entertainment til 3pm. Chris and Lori do a fantastic job with Thunder in the Smokies Rally and have worked hard over the years to produce a quality rally that doesn’t have drama and is just a fun time for everyone. Put May 1-3, 2015 on your calendar and we will see you in Maggie Valley for Thunder In The Smokies Spring Rally!

1st Annual Brody Thompson Memorial Poker Run By: Billy Dagenhart With the threat of rain and several light showers all day, it couldn’t stop the outpouring of support for the Thompson family; Jay, Amy, Dylan, and Trevor, in the 1st Annual Brody Thompson Memorial Poker Run, held Sunday, August 24, 2014. Brody, also known as the Bro-man, passed away June 18, 2014. He was only 2 years old. Although he was on this earth for only a short time, he was able to touch many peoples’ lives. He brightened the world through his smiles and laughter. Organizers for the event were Shannon Provenza, Dee Ann Lerma, Aimee Driggs, Jay, Amy, Trevor, and Dylan Thompson. With their hard work and dedication, this poker run was organized in only six weeks. They made sure that all 122 registered attendees and 45 volunteers were well taken care of. Numerous non-riders showed up at the final stop to show their support and purchase a plate of food to help the Foundation. “The Brody Thompson Foundation (www.brodythompsonfoundation.com) is a charity that will help us memorialize his name with honor and dignity. We are trying to build playgrounds, help young athletes that aren’t financially able to play sports and help high school seniors attend college. Through donations and hard work, Brody’s friends and family are determined to make this happen.” - Jay, Amy, Dylan, and Trevor Thompson. Special thanks goes out to Tilley HarleyDavidson for letting us begin our day at the Statesville dealership. Stops included Lancaster’s Bar-B-Que & Wings, Stumpy
Creek Park, Sports Page Food & Spirits, and ending at River City Bar & Grill. Also, thanks to Randy Crum for providing his band, Common Ground, at River City Bar & Grill. Also attending were Mooresville firefighters and first responders, and thanks to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department Motor Squad, led by Sergeant Smith, for escorting us there safely. Congratulations to the winner of the Poker Run, Allison Long, with a full house. She generously donated half of her winnings back to the Brody foundation. “If we have one thing to say about Brody’s Poker Run it would be, “Heaven’s floor rumbled Sunday and all saw how much Brody is loved and missed.” Seeing all of the motorcycles and cars started up at the same time when they left Tilley’s Harley-Davidson, it was truly a sight and sound we will never forget. My family and I were brought to tears for this display of respect and honor for our little boy. I honestly wish we could put emotions into words, but there are no words to describe that deep hurting and love we have experienced.” - Jay Thompson.

The Spanking New 2015 Indian Scout By: Everette “EZ” Short On a gentle Wednesday afternoon, in the second week of September, I met up with Jess Valedo, who is the East Coast Indian Tour Manager, at Coastal Victory and Indian Motorcycle in Murrells Inlet. Jess had brought along two models of their newest addition to the Indian lineup, The Scout, for a little look-see up close preview, since the bike will probably be arriving just in time for Christmas. Never fear kids, the company is taking orders at this very moment and these little devils are selling like hot cakes. The Scout is indeed a head turner and an attention getter. This new sled is a mesh of aggressive looks and innovative (as well as cool) styling that has never been seen on a bike with the legendary Indian logo attached to it. Like its iconic forerunner, the allnew Indian Scout is an innovative and aesthetically stunning American cruiser. It introduces the first-ever liquid-cooled Indian Motorcycle engine - an efficient and reliable 69 cubic inch V-twin - for impressive power on demand hat includes electronic fuel injection, counter-balancing, and a 6-speed transmission. With a low center of gravity for easy, fluid handling at all speeds and a low-slung solo seat, this is a great bike for people who think that the rest of the Indian line-up is too heavy to handle. The Scout immediately appeals to all of a new rider’s senses as it is visually stunning, has a strong exhaust note, and delivers impressive power for its size. The reliable, efficient liquid cooling guarantees consistently outstanding performance in all riding conditions and the high RPMs that younger riders love. Visually, this V-twin highlights some truly innovative styling with unique details that scream out for a closer look. Jess had brought along two sparkling samples of the fresh new Indian Scout ~ one in Indian Red and one in Silver Smoke. The Indian Red was definitely an eye catcher, but the bike is also offered in Thunder Black and Thunder Black Smoke, as well as Silver Smoke from the factory. As I was taking a picture of the cool lines on this gem, Jess showed me the best feature on this bike ~ THE SEAT LIFTS OFF WITH NO TOOLS! Wow, this is definitely a great feature as you don’t know how many hours I have spend getting to batteries and cooling systems. The battery is readily accessible, with a power port under the seat, and the cooling system fill up is there as well. When locked down, the seat is sturdy, with no wiggle, so you can pull over, hook in your phone charger and be on your way. Sounds simple right, but have you ever tried to get to the bat-
tery on your ride without breaking out tools? Get down to Coastal Victory Indian Motorcycle in Murrells Inlet, while you are here for Bike Week to see one of these darlings. If you do not get to the Myrtle Beach Fall Rally, visit your local Indian dealer (http://www.indianmotorcycle.com/ en-us/dealer-locator) to see the new 2015 Scout. I guarantee that even if you don’t think it’s right for you, you definitely know someone that this bike is perfect for. Call (843) 6519799 or visit www.CoastalVictory.com for more information on how you can get your hands on one of these hotties for Christmas.

T
By: Scott Wicker Saturday, August 9th, was a non-typical rainy day, but that did not stop an overwhelming turn out for Down Home Harley-Davidson’s 1st Annual Ice Cream Churn Off. The folks came in early and waited eagerly while 7 motorized churns turned out the best home made ice cream most of us had ever tasted. Each contestant made their own secret concoction. Over 60 anxious ice cream lovers paid to sample the various flavors and then vote on their favorite. Each contestant also had their own toppings to give their ice cream a little extra flair. After the votes were counted, Myra Crawford was crowned the winner with her Chocolate Chunky Monkey. Lonnie Harris finished 2nd with his Banana Cream Pie. Bonnie Stout came in 3rd with her Just Peachy! Congratulations to Myra, Lonnie, and Bonnie. Stay tuned! This will probably become an annual or pos-

Rolling Thunder®Inc, NC 7 Wounded Warrior Ride By: Randy Grosskopf August 16th marked the date of the 5th Annual Wounded Warrior Bug Run, a 70-mile motorcycle charity ride to raise money for the Wounded Warriors at Fort Bragg, NC. All monies raised will be donated directly to the WTB (Warrior Transition Battalion) at the Battalion Center and distributed to the Wounded Warrior in the time of need, more specifically during the holiday of Christmas. The Bug Run is a fun run with a $50 Grand Prize to the rider who happens to hit a bug on or nearest to the center of a bull’seye target placed on their headlight. This year’s event drew a crowd of approximately 75 motorcycles and many of those with passengers from the local area and many of those from the various local veterans organizations who all showed up in support of the event. Those organizations include Rolling Thunder®Inc, NC6, Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion Riders, Combat Vets Motorcycle Association, Freedom Riders, Christian Motorcycle Association, Patriot Warriors MC, Lords of Loyalty MC, Second Brigade MC, and many more. The event was held at “Johnny’s On Main” in Franklinton, NC, which is a brand new restaurant and bar located on Main Street. For the effort Johnny deeply discounted his menu and drink prices and graciously covered the $50 Grand Prize for our Bug Catcher Winner. Bob Barron of Zebulon was the Grand Prize Winner for landing a bug closest to the target on his headlight. A 50/50 Raffle was held and the winner was Hal Delooze of the American Legion Riders Post 116 Fuquay Varina of which he donated a large portion of his winning back to the effort and then another organizational project. Rolling Thunder®Inc, NC 7 extend their thanks to the various local businesses that provided door prizes; Widowmaker Custom Design and Repair, Main Street Automotive, Rommel Harley-Davidson, Carolinas Full Throttle Magazine, Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine, Coke Cola, Pepsi, Mimms Distributors, Budweiser, Creedmoor City Tavern, and of course
Johnny’s On Main. In addition to support of our troops, the wounded, and to honor all who have given their all in service to their country we are committed to the return of over 51,000 service men and women who are listed Missing in Action or Prisoner of War - 41 of these are from the Vietnam Conflict and are from North Carolina. Our National Organization Mission Statement: The major function of Rolling Thunder®, Inc. is to publicize the POW-MIA issue: To educate the public that many American Prisoners of War were left behind after all previous wars and to help correct the past and to protect the future Veterans from being left behind should they become Prisoners Of WarMissing In Action. Rolling Thunder®, Inc. is a non-profit organization and everyone donates his or her time because they believe in the POW/MIA Issue that we are working on. 2nd Annual Walkin’ Roll Poker Run Story and photo by Alan Dockery August had an extra Saturday and the one in the middle of the month was a great one for the 2nd Annual Walkin’ Roll Poker Run. This is a poker run I predict will grow into one of the big rides in our area. The Walkin’ Roll Activities League, Inc., is a non-profit celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. During those years, the league has provided free activities for children and adults with developmental disabilities. “Our league is a league of abilities, not disabilities. Our purpose is to provide quality activities in a fun atmosphere and develop each player’s potential to the fullest,” said Sharon Barlow, Director. Bikers in the Hickory, NC area have a great reputation for helping the children of Conover School, an excellent special education facility. Well, as those people get older they still need the community’s help. I was proud to see how the bikers stepped up to raise money for the sports programs, dances, bowling, and choir, plus personal needs of our neighbors. Nearly 200 riders, more than 300 people, played 430 poker hands that Saturday. After all expenses they raised an impressive $14,484. Good job to Sherrill Baxter and Duane Gibbs who organized the fundraiser. “My single most inspiring moment has been finding Walkin’ Roll and being able to help these kids with friends, family, and

the support of the community,” Gibbs said. Sherrill and Duane put on a great day for the bikers and everyone involved. Not only did we have a nice ride, but there were activities at the end. Starting with free hamburgers and hotdogs, soda, and water. Frosty adult beverages were available. The Activities League Choir performed. DJ Mark Day provided music. The NAWA Wrestling folks put on a show. There were door prizes and auctions. Outside were cars, trucks, and motorcycles on display. The biggest hit with some folks was the local dune buggy guys giving rides. “There are lots of people to thank for today’s successful poker run fundraiser,” Sherrill said. “Thanks to the volunteers who worked the poker run. Everybody involved bought shirts and poker hands and had a vested interest in the event. “Thanks to the sponsors and I know there are too many for y’all to list, but special thanks to Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson, Hickory American Legion Post 48, Hickory Riding Club, and Dennis Hefner of Specialty Welding for the awesome bike trailer we auctioned.” For more information on the Activities League, how to participate in their events and assist with future fundraising needs visit www.walkinroll.org.

Riders’ Roost Luau Party Story and photo by Alan Dockery Labor Day Weekend was beautiful with great weather for an End Of Summer Luau at Riders’ Roost, Ferguson, NC. I didn’t get in until Saturday and the Roost was already filling up with tents and bikes and people enjoying the mountains and each other’s company. It looked like we were going to have the biggest party weekend in years. Soon as I had the tent setup, I walked around seeing some of the fellow Roosters and checking out the pig. Tim and the boys already had a nice looking pig rotating over hot coals. Yum, yum, I love that smell. Y’all who know me know that the very next thing I did was head to the creek and join the folks already relaxing in the water. This was one of those weekends when the water level and temperature was perfect for just sitting and sipping beer all afternoon. If you got tired of sitting the fish, from the little ones in the shallows to the big ones in the swimming hole, were biting. After we had Dave’s BBQ chicken for supper it was soon time to get Saturday night’s party in gear. Deacon Black rocks. The well-known local band came ready to Rock The Roost with great tunes and their own light show. We danced and partied until midnight with the biggest crowd I’ve seen at Riders Roost in a few years. Early Sunday morning folks woke to a little bit of rain. No big deal. Soon the rain was over and it was time for another day of relaxing in the creek and hanging with a bunch of friends. By mid-afternoon the pig was done and folks were really slipping into Luau Mode. I started seeing more decorations going up and grass skirts going on.

4th Annual Ride In Memory Of PFC Justin Walker
By: Scott Wicker On August 2nd, friends, family, and supporters gathered for the 4th Annual Ride In Memory of PFC Justin Walker. Over 30 motorcycles and riders participated in the event. The ride left Lucky’s Saloon at noon and made stops at EC3 near Whitsett, Cuz’s Tavern in the Hopedale Community of Burlington, and Freebird’s in Southern Alamance County before making their way back to Lucky’s Saloon. Great food, as always, was provided to the participants back at Lucky’s and Steel Horse and Son of the South treated everyone to some great live entertainment. The Misfits came over after the ride and donated bake goods and a Ladies Harley-Davidson Vest to make this a very worthwhile benefit. Through the ride, 50/50 drawing, and contributions, over $3,000 was raised for the Wounded Warrior Project. The Ride

RIP Verlin Thomas “Whistle” Hill 7/25/64 - 8/25/14
By: Mark Infield Whistle was a friend of mine. Every time he called me, he started the conversation out by saying “What are we doin?” My reply was, “Same $#!t, different day!” Sometimes we talked twice a week and we saw each other at least once a month when he met us at Ray Price Harley-Davidson in Raleigh to get his allotment of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Whistle was first featured in the September 07 issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine when he married Lynn Walston at Bachelor’s Tavern in Spring Hope, NC on August 11, 2007. The event was named Whistle & Lynn’s Official Hangin’. He came to work with us in July of 2010 and served the eastern part of NC for 4 years. In that time, I cannot remember one time that Whistle was not on time and ready to go, whether it was to deliver magazines or cook a pig. Whistle had many friends who came to Joyner’s Funeral Home in Wilson, NC on August 28th. At one time there were people sitting along the walls and in line out the door to express their sympathies to the family. On September 13th, a celebration of Whistle’s life and a memorial ride was held at Hard Luck Saloon (formerly Batchelor’s). The ride went to Tippet’s Mill and back to Hard Luck for a pig pickin’, music, and memories. Whistle is survived by his wife, Lynn, and 3 daughters: Candace and Chelsea Walston and Jordan Alexiss Hill.

10th Anniversary Bull City Rumble
Motorcycle Insurance Specialist
By: Kyle O’Briant I could just make out a mass of bodies and orange cones down the street when I heard the small rumble of a Royal Enfield as it passed by. The rider adorned in his Bell Custom 500, Wayfarers, and skinny jeans fit the look of his vintage machine perfectly. A few moments later another rider passed by on a SOHC Honda and a Triumph after that. Each passing bike was more indicative of the day’s event, the 10th Annual Bull City Rumble. The Bull City Rumble is a Durham, North Carolina celebration of all makes and models of vintage motorcycles and scooters. The rally derives its theme from the rivalry of the Mods and Rockers and their 1960s English sub-culture. Ton Up NC, a small not for profit organization for the promotion of the riding, restoration, and racing of vintage motorcycles, has hosted the event for the past 10 years on Labor Day Weekend. The event featured a motorcycle breakfast, bike show, rock & roll burlesque show, bands, and both formal and informal rides. On Saturday afternoon, Main Street outside of Brightleaf Square played host to the bike show and featured vintage bikes from Japan, America, Europe, and the U.K. As well as pre-1980 scooters. The show, and rally for that matter, is most aptly summed up with style; the style of the bikes; the simplicity born from the era and subculture in which they were born, and the style of the builders and riders to match. As the afternoon went along, the crowd flowed in and out of the bars and restaurants lining the street to grab a beer and
cool off from the 90º+ day. It was the kind of day that made riding gear particularly unbearable. Overall, the rally and show was a showcase of some of the best looking vintage, cafe, tracker, or whatever you want to call it, motorcycles North Carolina has to offer. Ray Price Racing Travels To Canada’s West Coast To Capture Fifth Win
Ray Price racing travelled all the way to Mission Raceway in Mission, British Columbia, Canada, to attend the eighth race in the NHRA HarleyDavidson Drag Racing Series over the weekend of September 5-7. The team tested on Thursday to prepare the 1,000 horse power nitro Harley for the first rounds of qualifying on Friday and Saturday. The team was pleased with the test pass when the drag bike ran an incredible 6.284 ET at 232.74 MPH! “After the test pass we feel really good about going into qualifying and look to putting down some strong numbers”, Ray Price commented after the test session. During Friday’s first qualifying pass, Grimes put down another solid pass running a 6.319 ET at 234.19 MPH. Both the test run and first qualifying pass set a new Mission Raceway track record. Then in the second round the bike spun the tire and Grimes shut down early. However, in the third round, the team came right back and laid down an electrifying 6.272 ET at 234.55 MPH to capture the number one qualifying spot. The team had the Akea Express top fuel Harley ready and tuned for Sunday’s eliminations. Even though they had a bye run, Grimes did not let up and ran a 6.350 ET at 232.67 MPH. Then in the second round of eliminations, the Akea Express spun the tire, but fortunately Grimes still won the round because Nate Gagnon’s drag bike broke its chain, and Grimes was able to cross the finish line first. Grimes faced Damian Counden in the finals, both riders left the start line hard, it was a close race until the eighth mile, when Counden spun the tire on his drag bike, then Grimes pulled ahead and ran strong all the way to the finish crossing the line with a 6.346 ET at 232.01 MPH to capture the teams fifth win of the 2014 season. “The Akea Express ran so consistent all weekend. This win was a total team effort, and it was worth traveling across the country to get our fifth win”, Ray Price commented after the win. The teams next race will be Shakedown at Summit, an exhibition event at Summit Motorsports Park, Norwalk, Oh, October 3-5, 2014. The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support for the 2014 race season. Story and photo by Alan Dockery Despite being a little chilly and overcast the second Sunday in September, 150 motorcycles and about 200 people turned out for the 12th Annual Catawba County Shrine’s Poker Run. This year’s ride stopped at some new places and raised more than $8,000 for the local Shrine Club. By mid-afternoon the parking lot at the Shrine Club in Newton filled with bikers as they returned. While folks turned in their hands, they served all the riders and volunteers BBQ sandwiches and fixins. Outside DJ “Doc Hollywood” Crump entertained us. Once folks finished eating we headed outside for some door prizes and to announce the winners. The winning hands went to: Best Hand $500 Jeff & Joy Heffinger; 2nd Best $250 Stephen Wilson; 3rd Best $150 Haley Sawyer. Patrick Castle got $100 for the Worst Hand. Dennis Grigg coordinated the event and said, “Thank you to everyone who showed up to ride and the folks who helped put it on. Thanks also to the local businesses who donated door prizes and to the 50 sponsors who donated money for spots on our T-Shirts. And the poker run stop hosts; Rick’s Road House, River City Bar & Grill on Lake Norman, Zippers Restaurant & Lounge, Tri County Music Bar & Grill, Village Inn Lakeside on Lake Rhodhiss.”

Hawgs For Hospice By: Renee Saul Another set of very beautiful riding days and a great crowd of riders makes for another set of very successful fund raising events. Like last year, Chunk’s Hawg Haven and the Saw Mill II paired up again to raise money for Hospice of Greensboro, but this year we both topped the totals from last year. The food was good, the music was good, but I’ll have to say that our friends and bar patrons came through again with generous hearts and open wallets. The total raised for Chunk’s event on 8/16/14 was $3,547 and for the Saw Mill’s on 8/30/14 was $5,256. Awesome job on everyone’s part. Robin & I would like to thank Susan and Carol for working with us again and we thank all who donated their time for the cooking and the businesses that donated items for raffle prizes. Most of all we thank everyone who participated and showed the mainstream public just how big-hearted the motorcycle community can be. Good work everyone!!!

RIP Brian Giesick
By: Mike Griesman, Yellin’ Rebel Knowing Brian was a gift. I only knew him a few years, but he was a good friend. Brian was a family man that loved to spend time with his wife, daughters, and grandson. I used to enjoy seeing him and his family ride up to Yellin’ Rebel. Brian always had a smile and was willing to stop whatever he was doing to lend a hand when needed. When you went to his home he made you feel welcome. Nothing phony about him you knew where he stood. Brian, for a brief time, had the nickname Possum. The reason is we were riding to Myrtle Beach and there was a fresh road kill in the middle of the road. For some reason Brian didn’t see it and ran over the possum. This wasn’t bad but I was directly behind him and I knew parts would be flying back at me. Luckily, I was able to avoid anything off his tires. He was one of the original Old Coots and instrumental in bringing the riding club to the area. We had something else in common. Not only did we both love to ride, but we both retired from the Navy. I never did understand why anyone would like to be on a submarine but Brian seemed to like it. Guess someone has to do it. It’s really difficult to describe a friend like Brian was. I just thank God that there are people in the world like Brian and I can call them friend. Rest in Peace my brother. We’ll see you again someday.

17th Annual Gold Rush Charity Bike Show By: Meredith Wisniewski Saturday, August 16th kicked off the 17th Annual Gold Rush Charity Bike and 4x4 Show, which was held in the parking lot of Pure Gold in Wilmington. The 4x4 show was a first time this year, which brought in lifted 4x4 trucks. There were, of course, plenty of custom bikes and bikini babes. The crowd was thrilled to witness Mad Mike Jones perform FMX bike stunts with a jump clearing Pure Gold’s rooftop over 30 feet in the air flying from ramp to ramp close to 70 feet in distance! After talking to him he said that the Pure Gold staff including Jerry, Adam, and Rick made him and his team ECXFMX feel at home. Check out Mad Mike, his partner Seth Elliot and the ECXFMX team at www.ecxfmx.com. In the bike show, there were 13 classes with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies and then there was the “Best in Show” given to the baddest of them all. The Best In Show bike winner took home $300 cash and the biker babe bikini contest winner took home $500 cash! The event was held to benefit the AMVETS Post # 42. The AMVETS MISSION STATEMENT: To enhance and safeguard the entitlements for all American Veterans who have served honorably and to improve the quality of life for them, their families, and the communities where they live through leadership, advocacy and services. Some of the large raffle prizes given away will for sure keep the crowds heart racing long after Gold Rush 17 including a customized AR-15, as well as plenty of thrilling prize packages including a skydiving package, zip line package, and paintball package! The event sponsors included Icon Offroad
and Sleek Auto with Capt’n Bills Backyard Grill catering the event. A special thank you goes out to the entire team at Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson/Buell for their support. In total the event raised $2500 donated to the AMVETS post # 42.

R Lo’s MS Bike Fundraiser By: dpapabear Saturday, Sept 13, R Lo’s Pub & Grub in Thomasville, NC held their 3rd Annual Big Bike Blowout for MS. The event kicked off at 1pm with chicken plate specials and 7 different bands playing all thru the day and into the night. They also had several raffle items given away around 6:30 pm. The items varied from a .22 rifle, 30/30 rifle, leather recliner, Dunlop motorcycle tire, motorcycle helmets, bud cooler, cooler and chairs, and some matchbox cars/ trucks. The event supports Tour to Tanglewood bikers raising funds to find a cure for MS. The bands played a variety of music from some great country western to rock and roll to pop. Something for everyone. A good crowd came out in support and for some good food as well. 100% of the proceeds go to MS Society, so a good cause to support, great friends to catch up on and make new ones as well, just hangout and enjoying the music. Ride In Peace Mr. Milton Martin By: Everette “EZ” Short On July 27th of this year, I was riding next to Milton Martin down highway #22 in North Myrtle Beach and I noticed how cool and carefree he seemed. We have been on runs together before, but I had never had the chance to spend any time to really get to know him. With a big smokin’ stogie hanging out of his mouth, while rounding the bend at ninety miles an hour, to his big ole’ pointy toed cowboy boots hanging loosely off the highway bars, that grin spread across his face told everyone that he knew that he was the epitome of how good it can feel to ride free on any given sunny day. Milton was a loving father, son, and grandfather. He was dedicated to serving his country, even after retiring from the US Navy. I remember talking to him, that afternoon, at Cap’n Poo’s in Little River, as he was surrounded by family members and close friends. He had such a wonderful smile that beamed as he talked about how fantastic it was to be able to ride with his family for such a great cause. He swung his arms out and said, “And all the best company a man can ask for...” Then, he let out a wonderfully contagious laugh. He was born on August 25th 1961 in Charleston. Everyone that met Milton had nothing but great things to say about him. I sat next time him at the stoplight where he lost his life and took his picture just a few minutes before his passing on his last afternoon on Earth. It is still hard to believe that he is gone. He was so full of life. I didn’t even know of his accident, until after I had gotten home that night. It seemed impossible. So, more than anything, I have to tell you that the next time that you have the urge to speak to someone or get

to know them better, take the opportunity to do just that. You never know if you will have another chance to speak with them again. One thing is for certain; we are all headed down that same road one day. At the very least, on Milton’s last day he looked spectacular riding his Harley-Davidson Street Glide and sporting that trademark cigar. On Friday, August 1st, Milton was laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, SC. There was a full military dress 21 gun salute, hundreds of family and friends, and more bikes than you can believe, but Milton wasn’t there. He was out riding somewhere that we cannot follow. Ride in Peace Mr. Milton Monroe Martin. You will always be missed.

Pets For Vets
By: Meredith Wisniewski The Forgotten Sons MC of Surf City, NC held their annual event for veteran’s causes on August 16th at the Topsail Island Moose Lodge. The benefit chosen this month was the Pets For Vets Charity which is dedicated to providing a second chance for shelter pets by rescuing, training, and pairing them with America’s veterans who could benefit from having a companion animal. The event kicked off at 1 p.m. with delicious BBQ and brisket catered by Mission BBQ out of Wilmington, NC. Prizes were given away every hour including clothing donated by Article 15 which is a veteran owned company, corn hole boards and a cooler donated by Fireball Whiskey, Harley-Davidson gift bag, a helmet, and a tattoo gift certificate. There were vendors set up along the walls of the banquet hall with unique jewelry, knives, and bike accessories to sell and of course the Pets For Vets table was at the entrance to answer any and all questions anyone had about the cause. A traditional rain shower came down mid event, which is always seemingly an occurrence with these guys’ events, but it didn’t
stop them from getting out there and taking place in the keg toss. There was DJ Demon inside spinning the ones and twos and a local favorite band, Trainwreck, played live music throughout the afternoon. The total amount raised from the event was $2,750 the day of and a check sent from AMVETS Post 75 brought the total to $3,750! A special thanks goes out to Mama Brass and Papa aka “Grand Poohba” Brass of the Brass Pelican, Mission BBQ and the Topsail Island Moose Lodge for hosting the event. The Forgotten Sons MC President Rooster said, “We can’t wait for next year’s annual veteran’s event. We are proud to be Veterans helping Veterans.” If you are interested in helping with Veterans causes please visit ForgotttenSonsMC@weebly.com or find them on Facebook.

DYLAN FREEMAN BENEFIT RIDE!! By: Rick Gammons The City of Pilot Mountain started festivities early Saturday, September 6. This was the Hot Rod Drive In for the month of September. The air was warm and the sky had that crisp, early fall look. It was a good day for a ride up to Pilot Mountain. A lot of people here in North Carolina still remember Kelly, i.e. “Skulz”. He has been a vendor for leather, patches and other related motorcycle accessories for a long time. I, myself, have bought quite a few items from Kelly over the last 15 years or so. Anyway, Kelly has decided to step down and allow his daughter, Tiffany, to take a shot at being one of the few leather stores in the area. This is how Tiffany’s Leather and Accessories got its start. When I rolled in there Saturday morning, there were already ten bikes and some cars there. These people were the starters for the opening of Tiffany’s Leather. I was glad to see local people supporting Tiffany on her day. Hill people are some of the friendliest people in the world and I had a fantastic time with them all afternoon. Pappy, Joe Smith, Ronnie and “Hippy” were just a few of the supporters there who made the day memorable. And a shout out to Mike Bumgarner for being available for detail and pin striping. Thanks guys!! If you need leather, patches, flags pins, or anything else motorcycle related, call Tiffany @ 336 429-1872 or Skulz @ 336 710-6756.

Indian Of Greensboro Grand Opening By: Rick Gammons Saturday, August 23rd was hot and sticky - even early in the day. But Peggy and I were heading over to Indian of Greensboro on Church Street, so it didn’t really matter. I don’t deal with heat very well, but I knew that Monty’s Grand Opening would be worth it. We got a real treat when we turned on to Church Street. Motorcycles lined the street for almost two blocks. There were, at least, thirteen different types of motorcycles sitting there, each one unique. We backed in between a Harley and a Victory, nice bikes to border my VTX. Monty had gotten the street beside the dealership blocked and there were parts vendors, ice cream, hot dogs, and an exquisite video setup for children (most “children” being well beyond child years). The food was good and there was plenty! Everyone was looking at the amazing new Indians and riding accessories. Clothing was already flying off the shelf. Monty said that they had sold about 75% of their clothing inventory during the day. I guess everybody wants to be wearing Indian Motorcycle clothing. Anyway, I was taking photos and someone called my name. My usual first reaction was – what have I done now!! But, much to my surprise, I won the first $75 apparel certificate. I never win squat, so I was really excited.
Several people there racked up generous prizes and a lot of them. You shoulda been there. Indian of Greensboro’s party lasted from 12 to 4 pm, just right time wise. There were roughly 800 people in and out at some point during this time. They also sold two motorcycles that day. Indian Motorcycle of Greensboro can get you any of the current styles (Chief, Chieftain, Roadmaster) or they can order you one of the 2015 Indian Scouts, soon to be available. Indian Motorcycle wants everyone to know they are back with exceptional standards (bikes and apparel), a 5-year warranty, plug and play accessories, and the ability to ride one of the industry legends. Stop by Indian Motorcycles of Greensboro at 201 South Church Street and talk to Monty or Bob. Tell ‘em you want to check out their line of 2015 Motorcycles. You could go home with a new buddy… your next (Indian) motorcycle.

Spokes & Jokes
The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!
In the days before voter fraud became unfunny, they told about the two men from a Democratic clubhouse in Chicago out in a graveyard late one night copying names from tombstones for voting purposes. One of the men noticed the other was falling row after row behind. “Hurry it up, pal,” he said. “What’s wrong?” His buddy replied, “This is one of those tough Polish names. I’ve got to figure it out.” “Forget about that one,” stage-whispered his friend. “Just skip it and move on to the next one.” “Whaddaya mean, ‘Move on’?” he answered indignantly. “This guy has as much right to vote as all the rest in here!”
ing Anti-American slogans, with a halfburned American Flag duct-taped on the trunk of their car, and a “ Remember 9-11” slogan spray painted on the side, was stopped next to me. Suddenly they yelled, “Allah Akbar! Praise Allah!” and took off before the light changed. Out of nowhere an 18-wheeler came speeding through the intersection and ran directly over their car, crushing it completely and killing everyone in it. For several minutes I sat in my car thinking to myself, “Man....that could have been me!” So today, bright and early, I went out and got a job as a truck driver.
have never had a single problem.” Brian took his dad’s advice and did the same thing to his wife on his wedding night. Then, Jill took off her panties and gave them to Brian. “Try these on,” she said. Brian went along with it and tried them on, but they were far too small. “What’s the point of this? I can’t get into your panties,” said Brian. “Exactly,” Jill replied, “and if you don’t change your attitude, you never will!”

Two nuns were shopping at a 7-11 store. As they passed by the beer cooler, one nun said to the other, “Wouldn’t a nice cold beer or two taste wonderful on a hot summer evening?” The second nun answered, “Indeed it would, sister, but I would not feel comfortable buying beer, since I am certain it would cause a scene at the checkout counter.” “I can handle that without a problem” the other nun replied, and she picked up a six-pack and headed for the checkout. The cashier had a surprised look on his face when the two nuns arrived with a six-pack of beer. “We use beer for washing our hair” the nun said, “back at our nunnery, we call it Catholic shampoo.” Without blinking an eye, the cashier reached under the counter, pulled out a package of pretzel sticks, and placed them in the bag with the beer. He then looked the nun straight in the eye, smiled and said, “The curlers are on the house.” If the person in the next lane at the stoplight rolls up the window and locks the door, support their view of bikers by snarling at them. I was sitting at a long stoplight yesterday, minding my own business and patiently waiting for it to turn green, even though there was no on-coming traffic. A carload of bearded, young, loud Muslims, shout-
When my daughter, Kelli, said her bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member, every friend, and every animal (current and past). For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayer, Kelli would say, “And all girls.” This soon became part of her nightly routine, to include this closing. My curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, “Kelli, why do you always add the part about all girls?” Her response, “Because everybody always finish their prayers by saying ‘All Men’!”
You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your right side is a sharp drop off, and on your left side is an elephant traveling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is another galloping horse but your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the horse in front of you. What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation? Get your drunk a$$ off the merry-go-round! After Brian proposed to Jill, his father took him to one side. “Son, when I first got married to your mother, the first thing I did when we got home was take off my pants. I gave them to your mother and told her to try them on, which she did. They were huge on her and she said that she couldn’t wear them because they were too large. I said to her, ‘Of course they are too big for you, I wear the pants in this family and I always will.’ Ever since that day, son, we
A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says, “That’s the ugliest baby that I’ve ever seen. Ugh!” The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, “The driver just insulted me!” The man says, “You go right up there and tell him off – go ahead, I’ll hold your monkey for you.” An old man is met by his attorney, and is told he is going to be audited. He rides to the IRS office with his attorney, and when he gets there, he begins to talk with the IRS agent. “I bet $2,000 I can bite my own eye!” The IRS agent agrees to the bet, believing it an impossible task. The old man laughs, pulls out his glass eye, and bites it. The IRS agent is dumbfounded. The old man bets $3,000 he can bite his other eye. The IRS agent knows there’s no way possible to do this, so he once more agrees. The old man cackles, pulls out his dentures, and bites his eye. Then the old man finally wagers, “I bet $20,000 I can stand on the far side of your desk, pee over the desk, and get it into your wastebasket, without missing a single drop.” The agent knows he won’t be able to, so once more he agrees. The old man indeed misses, peeing all over the desk, and on the paperwork. The IRS agent jumps for joy, but then notices the attorney over in the corner moaning. “Are you all right?” asks the agent. “No! On the way over here, he bet me $400,000 he could pee on your desk and you’d be happy about it!”

5000 RPM Hey everyone, Popkorn here and I was wondering if we could talk just a moment about power and performance. You remember that feeling when you first twisted the throttle on your scoot and held it wide open until you thought it was going to blow then grabbed another gear and the rush continued? For me and my Shovelhead, (yes I still ride a Shovel, it is very special to me because it was given to me by the Lord to use for ministry) 1st gear is a lot of fun. I try to shift around 4000 rpm because getting the old girl into 2nd is sometimes trying, but once in 2nd it’s party time. It pulls strong to 5000 rpm and 3rd gear is a snap to achieve. Then somewhere between 3rd and 4th you feel as if you were shot out of a canon. I love the feel of that power. It is a rush that never gets old. But as we stack up the miles the power seems to fade. Even when we keep the fluids changed and fresh plugs in the heads and the high-octane fuel in the tank, our bikes seem to become slower. And it happens so gradually we don’t even notice it, not until we need all the power possible to merge onto a busy road or just spank the kid who gave you the nod. It’s then you realize something is wrong. Our lives are much like an engine. Even if we attend church and try to live a life pleasing to God, we become “weak”. I mean sometimes we get so burned-out we can hardly function at all.
ISAIAH 40:31 the word of God tells us “But those who wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles: they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint”. Now as a Christian biker I see a lot in this verse. First we mount up! Every time we ride we mount up, don’t we? Run and not be weary, sort of like running at 5000 rpm and not losing power. Walk and not faint, you know after a long cruise, pulling in the clutch and the engine does not stall but idles to the tune of a v-twin. The most important part however is “but they who wait upon the LORD”. If your life is losing power, you need strength. I invite you to try Jesus, if you never knew him or if you once served him and your relationship with him faded like the engine performance faded, he is waiting to restore the power in your life. We live life at full throttle. Keeping our eyes on Jesus will enable us to reach that 5000 rpm mark when ever we need it the most.

Boone Fall Bike Rally
By: dpapabear The Boone Fall Rally was moved up by a week this year to run Sept 5th and 6th, but nobody informed Mother Nature, so we had some scattered rain showers off and on, but certainly not a washout. Mornings were pretty clear with showers starting around mid-afternoon (2ish) enough to make people take shelter for a little while and then back out to continue the activities. But overall, it turned out to be a fair weekend with a great crowd in attendance. The morning rides went on as usual with the riders coming back a little damp, but not soaked. The Saturday bike/people games got rained out after the bike show, the slow ride, and the burn out pit, not due to continuous rain but enough rain to tear up the field. The Bike Show winners were: CRUISER: 1st Place - Scott Wilcox, 2nd Place - April Whitehead, TOURING/BAGGER: 1st Place - Becky Damuth, 2nd Place - Bill Gorman, TRIKE: 1st Place - Wendy Weir, 2nd Place - David Walker, CUSTOM: 1st Place - Ricky Minton, 2nd Place - Robert South, and METRIC: 1st Place - Carl Wilson, 2nd Place - Jennifer Hatcher. Race went to David Allen, who makes it look like the bike is standing still. CONGRATS to all. The winners collected a trophy and some prize money, sponsored by Tom McGrath’s Law Group, and the winner of the Burn Out contest received a new tire installed from Iron Station Thunder. The bands played a mixed variety of music to sometimes just a few people taking shelter from the rain to a pretty good crowd once the rain let up. Friday bands were: COLD ETHYL and PROBLEM CHILD, and Saturday bands were: ROADTTRIPP BAND, D.B. BRYANT & PINETOP LIGHTNING, and BAD ROMEO. Saturday evening offered a Wet T-shirt contest and a 50/50 drawing with the winner collecting around $1300 for their half. Overall, the rain dampened a few things, but most still seemed to enjoy the event and had a good time partying anyway. So if you have or have not been, make plans to come up to the mountains next year for the Spring and Fall Boone Rallies, hangout, party, play in the games, ride some of the beautiful mountain roads, make the vendors happy (buy something), or just kick back and make some new friends. The Spring Rally is the last weekend on May and the Fall Rally is first weekend of Sept. We would like to thank all of the vendors for their support and I want to thank Iron Station Thunder and Easy Eddie’s for helping me out when my stator died on Friday mornings ride. Part of the proceeds from the rally go to the CMA group to help ensure Christmas toys for some of the local area children, which is always a great cause! Pics from the Boone Fall Rally can be found on the www. FullThrottleMagazine.com web site. Until we meet again, ride safe, have fun, and always enjoy the Journey!!

Bike Night At American Legion Post 87
By: Rose and Lloyd American Legion Post 87 Women’s Auxiliary met on August 21st in in High Point, NC. Brian Sparks, the husband of the Women’s Auxiliary Secretary, was serving in Afghanistan. We decided to make a care package and send to him. We also knew of a few other guys in his troop that could use some things. We posted on Facebook that on Bike Night, August 28th, we would be making a care package for the troops. A few donations came in through the week, but we were overwhelmed on bike night with bikes coming from everywhere; Asheboro, Winston-Salem, and a big thanks to Forever Two Wheels, they showed up all with support for our soldiers. With Archie and James on the grille and Anna the bartender slinging drinks, we had an amazing night. When you have great food, great weather, and a parking lot full of great people, what more can you ask for? Well, a little help for our troops serving. We ended the night with not one box, but six huge boxes of supplies for our guys. Truly a show that bikers care not only
about the charities we do here, but our guys that need a little support from home. So many thanks to all at American Legion Post 87 and all the bikers that gave a little of their heart. To our troops there is nothing like knowing we are thinking of them everyday.

Steele Angels 10th Annual Back To School Run 4624 Bragg Blvd. Fayetteville, NC Home Of The Gypsy Women
WAYNE FALLS “LEUKEMIA” POKER RUN OCTOBER 18TH 1st Out Noon • $15/Rider
Music, 50/50, Door Prizes, Food, Live Auction SAT. NOV 1ST FTCC STUDENT NURSE PROGRAM OYSTER ROAST
By: Wendy ”Breezy” Rogers The Steele Angels held their 10th Annual Back To School Run on August 16th. It was a SAT. NOV 22ND nice day with a few scattered showers throughout the day, but they managed to get the STEELE ANGELS 11TH ANNUAL TOY RUN event in and it turned out very well. It was held at Legend’s Pub in Fayetteville, NC. For More Info Contact Legends Pub The participants brought school supplies or a donation that went to Cumberland and surrounding counties to help the children in need. Legends Is A Next Door To The great “SAPs” cooked the hot dogs and they did an awesome job. “Charlie” along Private Club Hot Hog Leather with Jesse Jones Hot Dogs donated the food. Thanks to the guys for coming through http://groups.yahoo.com/group/legendspub/ for them! They had music, great door prizes, and a 50/50. Everybody seemed to have had a great time. It is always a good feeling to be socializing with people with whom you have common interests, and to be doing a great thing at the same time. How great is that?! This event which was started by the Steele Angels 10 years ago provides money to Cumberland County and is used for emergencies for children when the time arises. It is great to know that it will ease the teacher’s minds knowing that there is a little help out there when needed. Today’s times are getting even harder and the teachers are struggling to make sure that the children in need get what is necessary. The Steele Angels want to thank everyone that participated and sponsored this year’s run. It will all benefit the children in our community, which, in the long run will be our future leaders. You can have an event, but without the people coming to support it and the sponsors giving to help support it, there just would not be an event. Mark your calendars for the Steele Angels 11th Annual Toy 250i Dynojet ite! nd Run on November 22 and watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle amometer On S n y D Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for future events.

By: Gerald Sloan – President of The Upstate’s Finest M/C Christians Ministries United (CMU) donated a gift of $10,600 to the Greenville Children’s Hospital Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NIC-U) in Greenville, SC. The CMU is a group of several likeminded motorcycle ministries that are working toward reaching the lost and spreading God’s Word. The money was raised over a period of several months through the sale of tickets to win a donated motorcycle, sponsorships, ride entry fees, and t-shirt sales. The main event, a motorcycle ride was named The Baby Eli Memorial Run in honor of Eli Johnson, a newborn that spent his life of eight months in the NIC-U. Eli was able to come home and attend church shortly before his angel date of September 16, 2012. The monies raised will be used to provide privacy curtains for families visiting their loved ones in the NIC-U. “This was a project three years in the making”, says Jimmy Rumsey the Assistant Director of the CMU. The check was delivered to Diane Dillion, the Director of the Children’s Hospital, on September 8, 2014.

Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Fun Run By: Vikki Harley On Sunday, September 7, while driving on Peters Creek Parkway, did you get to see the giant inflatable Marine, at the Griffith Fire Station? Vikki and Darrell Harley of Winston-Salem hosted The Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Fun Run to kick off the Toys For Tots Campaign season. With the help of the WinstonSalem Sheriff’s Department, the Griffith Fire Station, and with the support of numerous local businesses, the ride was agreed by all to be a great success. For the past three years they have hosted this event. It was a great day for a ride, nice weather, and many of our previous riders joined us and we also met a few new friends. Toys were collected. Prizes were awarded to show our appreciation for helping with the event. The Harleys would like to thank all of the participants and sponsors for all the help and support that made the event a very special one. A few of our sponsors were TJX, Bojangels, Smiley’s Golf, Gifts By Mia, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. We also want to thank The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, Ride North America, and Facebook for publicizing our event. They also would like to thank The Marine Corps Reserves’, Sgt. Bellamy for the use of the inflatable Marine.

The Ray Price Racing Team arrived at Cecil County Dragway with high hopes for the 7th race in the NHRA HarleyDavidson Drag Racing Series as part of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Cecil County Dragway, Rising Sun, MD. This race was held the weekend of August 15-17. After coming off an exciting time performing exhibition runs the previous weekend with Bob Malloy, as part of Night Under Fire at Summit Motorsports Park, the Akea/Ray Price Race Team was trying to capture their fifth win of the season. Qualifying took place on Friday with two rounds on the schedule. During the first round Tommy Grimes twisted the throttle to run a 6.349 ET at 232.11 MPH to put the team into the number two spot. After the run the team had a feeling that they might have hurt the motor, but went ahead and prepped the drag bike for the second round of qualifying. Then in the second round, the Akea/Ray Price nitro Harley put down a 6.36 ET, but the bike slowed and the team knew that the motor was hurt. The team now was in the number three spot going into Saturday’s eliminations. The team changed the motor Friday night and prepared the drag bike for Saturday’s eliminations. Not having the
chance to put down a pass with the new motor before the first round of eliminations, the team tuned the drag bike knowing it would be a lot stronger going into eliminations. Facing Rickey House in the first round, Grimes twisted the throttle hard and the bike responded like it should, but spun the tire forcing the team to shut the Akea/Ray Price Race down. While the team came into the race hoping for the better, they knew that this wasn’t the weekend they would capture their fifth win of the NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series. The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support for the 2014 race season. They include our Primary Sponsors: Akea, Ray Price Harley-Davidson, with special thanks to our Associate Sponsor Raleigh H. O. G. and our Support Sponsors: CP Pistons, Vanson Leathers, PJ1 Products, RC Components, Nationwide Insurance, Royal Purple, Barnett Clutches & Cables, Autolite Sparkplugs, Mickey Thompson Tires, Gates Belts, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, JIMS USA, Industrial Machine Solutions and Wiley X. Our 9-11 Memorial Run - The Strand Remembers By: Everette “EZ” Short No matter who you are, I am sure that you still remember exactly where you were standing at 8:45AM on the morning of September 11, 2001, when the first plane hit Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. Thirteen years later, we still remember that moment in time, when life as we knew it changed forever. Over 2,750 people tragically lost their lives on that day and we promised to remember. In a solemn tribute to those we lost, on Thursday, September 11th of this year over 200 bikes gathered at high noon for a show of force to remind each other that, in the Grand Strand area, we have not forgotten. Starting out at Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson, the 2nd Annual 9/11 Responders Commemoration Ride was kicked off with a prayer at noon with over 400 people in attendance. Afterward, we rolled out to the 9/11 Unity Memorial Garden at Broadway at the Beach for a brief ceremony. It was quite

a sight to see so many bikers arriving in a parade that stretched out for over half a mile. If you haven’t been to The 9/11 Unity Memorial, on the North side of Broadway at the Beach, it is adjacent to the 29th Street entrance and it is a very well done tribute. Special thanks go out to the SC Axemen (firefighters MC), our own CVMA, the Blue Knights (law enforcement MC), plus all the other clubs who showed up to pay their respects. Soon enough, it was over and it was time for a hot hop onto the bi-pass for a ride to The Boathouse in Fantasy Harbor. There was a lot of good fellowship and sharing with some real life heroes and then we had a red, white, and blue balloon releasing ceremony that looked like a flock of flags taking to the wind. I am sure you all saw the pictures of people escaping while the towers went down on 9/11/01, but did you know that 343 firefighters and paramedics went into the towers and lost their lives that day? Or that 23 NYPD officers also lost their lives in that horrific event, along with 27 Port Authority officers? These men and women are our real heroes and it was astounding to see living legends among us with such humility for the jobs they do. It was a tearful day, but also a day of rejoicing in the memory of those who gave it all. Finally, it was a wonderful way to end the day, when we got to The Dead Dog Saloon in Murrells Inlet, to find scores of people in line, waving flags, and a big fire truck, lights flashing, to greet us. The food was excellent and the band was rocking nicely, with a gorgeous view of the marina and its stoic wooden boardwalk off the back deck. By the time we were done with prizes, auctions and such, the whole place was filled with bikers, locals, and cage riding visitors that had all gathered to revel in the memory filled moments of that day. It seems that no one that was alive on that day has forgotten and if you remember that day, then you probably remember that afterward we came together as a nation, in a way that has never been seen, to get through it all. This celebration was just that kind of a day and it felt like a truly American Holiday. I personally think it is or at least it should be. I have to send out a special THANK YOU to all the responders who showed up with help and support. You, my friends, are our real life true heroes.
