Let’s all head to the mountains for a leaf peeper tour or off to the beach for the last hurrah of summer and pack in the fall bike weeks of Myrtle Beach or Daytona. It’s not over yet, check your tire pressure, fill the gas tank and just ride. How does Harley say it? F*ck it, Let’s Ride! If you need a cause to ride check out the Cruisin’ Calendar in this issue for the breast cancer runs – it is October after all, memorial runs, benefit rides for some unfortunate that had a motorcycle wreck. …….Let’s ride and raise money for veterans, needy kids, or a brother or sister down on their luck. Raging Bull Tattoo And Art Show

By: Ed Cleary wo things bikers have never been shy about is showing off are their bikes and their tattoos. True to form they showed up in droves at Raging Bull Harley-Davidson in Durham, on Saturday, August 18, for a Tattoo And Art Show. Sponsoring the event was 401 Tattoo, from Fuquay-Varina, represented by tattoo artists James Cooper, a.k.a. Oddly Strange James, and Sam Moore. The practice of tattooing dates back to the beginning of civilization. Ötzi, a.k.a. “The Iceman”, is a well preserved mummy who lived about 3400 years ago. Found in a melting glacier in the Italian Alps in 1991, his body revealed over 60 tattoos. In contrast to Ötzi’s tattoo’s, which were done in ink made from fire ash and consisted mostly of lines and bands, todays artwork is much more creative, colorful and complex. Contestants on this day were judged in one of three categories; Color, Black and

Gray and American Traditional. Of all the outstanding artwork on display there could, of course, be only one winner in each category. The judging panel, consisting of James and Sam from 401, and Holly Stringer from Raging Bull, had some tough decision to make, but in the end, they reached a consensus. Taking 1st Place in Color was Matthew Waltrip. Mike Clark took Black and Gray honors and Brad Glen won the American Traditional category. Each of these winners received a $100 gift card from Raging Bull. Brad was also awarded best in show and received a $200 gift card from 401 Tattoo. Live entertainment came from the Invaders, a great classic blues-rock trio out of Winston-Salem. Raging Bull also treated everyone to BBQ chicken plates, cooked on site by Christy and Brett Ferrell, owners of Ferrell’s Awesome BBQ Sauce.

Thunder In The Smokies Fall Motorcycle Rally By: WildThing he weekend of September 7 – 9 2018 was just beautiful. Yes, as anyone in the Carolinas knows, the weather can change moment to moment and this weekend had its moments of threatening clouds. However, it was nothing compared to the big storms of August or Hurricane Florence that visited the Carolinas the very next weekend. This rally is a favorite as it is set in the heart of Maggie Valley, close to some of the best mountain riding in the southeast. There is always a good variety of vendors set up in the festival grounds with all sorts of biker gear and festival foods. The music line-up is always impressive, too, and starts just at twilight and goes on till 11. This fall, the music was sponsored by Smoky Mountain Steel Horses and Huff Oil Group. On Friday night, the early set was done by Hannah Styles, next up was local favorite Ali Randolph, and to cap off the evening DB Bryant wowed the crowd under a beautiful starry night. Saturday morning, those that can get up early enough, there

is a tour ride that goes out to the Blue Ridge Parkway to enjoy the mist rising off the peaks of the Smokies and gives the newbies a taste of some great places to ride. Of course, back at the festival grounds, the vendors are open and bikes are rolling in for a day of fun. First off is the peoples’ choice bike show. Everyone coming into the rally is given a ticket to vote on their favorite bike. Those that wanted to show off their ride were invited to park in front of the music stage and it wasn’t long before there was an array of 40 bikes vying for the cash

prizes sponsored by Tom McGrath Law Group. It was a difficult decision, but after an hour of consideration, the tickets placed in the upturned helmets in front of each bike entered in the show were counted. Third place was awarded to a beautiful customized orange bike with a big front wheel that started life as a 2013 Street Glide and was owned by Vernon Skidmore from Cherryville NC. Second place went to an original, handbuilt vehicle, called a “T-Glide”. It was fabricated from a 2005 Electra-Glide and a 1923 replica T-Bucket. It certainly garnered a lot of attention and the fabricator, Doug Johnson of Liberty KY, was justifiably proud. Even though the competition was tough, folks gravitated to a cherry 1947 HarleyDavidson EL that Tim Wilmoth of Amelia Courthouse VA found in a cornfield and spent 16 years working on it till it was ready to show-off. He won $500 at this bike show for his efforts and $300 and $200 was awarded to second and third place winners in the show respectively. Shortly after the bike show, the games began at the other end of the field. It was on to the slow race, weenie bite, haystack scramble, and bouncing down the field on big rubber balls for money. For the first few minutes, it began to drizzle and several folks beat a path to the motel! The drizzle didn’t last wrong, so I think they came back pretty soon. That didn’t stop the games, may have slowed them down a bit, but the cash prizes were more important to the gamers. This all was prelude to the great line-up of music set to start at 4:30 with the Steve Bryson Band. Party on into the lovely

warm evening seemed to be the rally call as bikers began streaming into the festival grounds after supper. There was a fire dancer on hand to entertain in between music sets. Jody Medford wowed the crowd and the evening was capped off with Cody McCarver. On Saturday, the vendors were open, there was a free pancake breakfast and a church service at 10 am for those not already headed home. Well, another Thunder in the Smokies is in the books. 3rd Annual Camel City Bikefest

By Buzz omegrown rallies are really the best parties, a sampling of the local biker scene put on by people who know and love the area. That’s what we have going on in Winston-Salem, home to Biker Trash Nation and the Camel City Bikefest. The previous 2 years the bike fest had been a wild street party that raged into the night. The huge success and the threat of downtown road construction prompted Wayne Pinnix, Leader of the Biker Trash Nation and Camel City Bikefest founder, to move the party to the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds were accommodating to help grow the mayhem that has become customary in the Camel City. The festival grounds are an asphalt figure 8 with vendors on the top side and the bottom half reserved for motorcycle parking. Camping was added this year and campers and motorcycles came in as early as Friday morning to start the party.

The gates opened Saturday morning September 8 at 11 am to a full line up of activities. Radical Randy was back for the third year putting on his world famous Baggerz & Tailz Bike Show and Sound Off Competition. Randy had quite an im-

pressive lineup of custom bikes registered for us to check out ranging from a sweet home built gold flake Triumph Chopper, a flat black Caddy Davidson by Toxic Chops, a fire breathing Honda Fury, some sweet Custom Baggers by Winston-Salem’s own Twin City Cycles and a bunch of personal rides. There were a lot of really sweet rides, I don’t envy Randy for having to judge those rides! It was a hot day but there were plenty of beer tents spread through the festival grounds and if you wanted to sit down there was a grand stand on the far side of the property with the music stage set up. The McGrath Law Firm, the official law firm of Biker Trash Nation, was the main stage sponsor. This was no backyard music set up, they had the sound just right and it was pumping out the tunes. Wayne had done his band homework and really pulled in some great bands for the Biker Trash to enjoy. The entertainment started up with local favorites Havoc and Smash Hat the rocked the stage early on and finished out with up and coming stars “Them Dirty Roses” and the show was headlined by bike rally veterans “Big Engine”. The Music Stage was also the area that hosted the bike games sponsored by Xtreme Wings -NThings in Winston-Salem. The bike games were scheduled for the middle of the afternoon and a few folks enjoyed some rounds of motorcycle keg push, the slow ride and people games like “Poker and Run” that involved pokin’ a toilet paper roll held between your ladies’ legs with a plunger that was between your legs and then carrying said toilet paper roll back to the finish line

without the help of your hands. The real twist was when they replaced the plunger handle with a handle the length of a broom stick, that made it interesting! The bike games also included the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Burn Out Contest. Zack and Kristen from The Rebel Spirit custom built a rad diamond plated burnout pit and it was awesome. Frank Hodges helped us break it in and took home the “Grand Tire Smoker” award along with some tickets to see Rebel Son and $100 for smoking his tire. Smokin HarleyDavidson of Winston-Salem who was the title sponsor of the event and the Official Dealership of Biker Trash Nation even offered a “burnout tire special” for those who were willing to burn one with us. The special got you 30% off a new tire with a $50 install. That’s awesome! The Music stage was also the place to be to check out the Miss Camel City 2018 Competition, sponsored by Breaktime Billiards of Winston-Salem. Wayne emceed while the girls answered questions from the judges, who happened to be Johnny and Michael from the Motorcycle Mayhem Radio show with guest host Nightmare from Nightmare Custom Cycles. After the panel of distinguished judges were satisfied by Q&A and a little bit of shakin’ what they got. The unanimous winner was Miss Carly Dukes who was crowned by last year’s Camel City Bikefest Pinup Contest Winner Kandi Bise! Congratulations Carly! Carly’s first job after winning this prestigious title was to help Radical Randy with the Bike Show Awards. Like I mentioned before I did NOT envy Randy for having to judge these awesome bikes, but Randy has been in the bike show business for a long time and knows his stuff. There were awards for the Baggerz & Tailz Custom Bike Show and for the Sound Competition all sponsored by Baggerz Saloon. The awards went from the “Every Day Rider” award all the way up to the Best In Show. The beautiful Triumph Chopper I mentioned earlier took home the best in show, well deserved, it was a beautiful bike. Each winner came up and received their award and was photographed with Randy and Miss Camel City. It was a hell of a day, and even though it dripped on us for almost 5 minutes, it was a party that you didn’t want to miss. I am looking forward to the 4th Annual Camel City Bikefest and I know that Wayne will have another excellent party for us. A lot goes into putting together a rally like this and my hat is off to you, Wayne Pinnix for all the hard work and dedica-

Deathwish Motor Culture Bike Night By: Buzz t’s been a busy summer and I have been trying to get out to some bike nights that I hadn’t been to before. One bike night I had been trying to get to all summer was the Deathwish Motor Culture Bike night at The Wing Company, in Cameron, NC. We ran an article this past May on a benefit for a 6-year old battling leukemia, (2nd Annual Stunt & Bike Show), that Deathwish put on that caught my eye and then I got a chance to hang out shoot some photos of the Deathwish Crew’s stunt show at the Smokeout Rally in June. (Check out the pictures of both prior mentioned events to see some killer pics on our website www.FullThrottleMagazine.com) So I was totally stoked when my schedule opened up and I hauled ass down to Cameron to hang out with the Deathwish Crew. Cameron is just north west of Fayetteville, a straight shot down 421 to 87 and The Wing Company is on the right as you get into town. When I rolled up there was already a string

of bikes parked and the patio was packed with folks ready to have a good time. I went in and was greeted by a friendly staff lead by The Wing Company owner, Joie Lomogda, the wife of Jeremy Lomogda who is the head honcho of Deathwish Motor Culture. Joie made sure I felt at home and let me know that

Jeremy was on his way. Soon afterward, Joie gave me the nod and let me know Jeremy was pulling up outside and sure as shit, Jeremy and his brother Drew came rolling in on one wheel, pulling a monster wheelie on the way in. An entrance with impact! Jeremy and other friends of the crew started setting up a merchandise table on the patio. The Wing Company is a cool little spot that has 10+ draft beers on tap, full ABC permits, and munchable menu that will make your mouth water. The bar is stacked with big screen TV’s and pre-season football was the extra entertainment. Everyone that rides in to bike night gets a raffle ticket and the merchandise table was stacked full of cool shirts, tool sets, hats, and other cool shit that was going to go home in saddlebags tonight. We hung out on the patio all night while the DJ kept the tunes coming and everyone was family.

Once the night was established, Jeremy and Drew stepped the night up a notch with some grande wheelies and burnouts that were echoed by other rubber happy riders that kept the smoke pouring. The crowd was buying 50/50 and raffle tickets up to moment before the winning numbers were being pulled. Jeremy gave away a table full of Deathwish merchandise, a whole wad of cash in the 50/50, and a custom paint job from local painter, Terry Alfano (@AlfanoTerry). They even pull their 2 favorite bikes on the lot that night and hand out some garage worthy custom painted plaques. Brandon (Scott) Tindal took home the top honors with his chromed out softail springer sporting a sweet sheet metal to green flames on top of a black candy base. Congrats! The parade of burnouts continued while the crowd left and burned off the last bit of steam from the night. It was a beautiful, warm summer night and it was a nice ride home. I strongly recommend that you pay attention to the Cruisin’ Calendar for the next Death Wish Bike Night and get over to The Wing Company and have good time. Biker Trash Nation Bike Night Takeover At Ted’s Kickin Chicken By Buzz ike night is my favorite mid-week distraction. It’s what makes the work week bearable for most bikers. Thursday is a big bike night in Winston-Salem, NC and with Wayne Pinnix and the Biker Trash Nation Bike Night Take Over going on at Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken, it was the place to be. I arrived hungry and thirsty and Ted’s can definitely quench both of these problems. Ted’s features .75¢ wings and $2 beer on bike night, just to make you feel special. The bar was crowded, but the good looking bartenders are on their game and make sure you get served without getting too dry. Back out in the lot the bikes were pouring in and the band was jamming out some tunes. The big deal of the night was the frozen t-shirt contest that went on after the sun went down. Wayne emceed as a handful of lovely ladies and 1 guy, Daniel, I’m talking about you, competed for some prize money by getting their assets chilly in some pre-frozen white t-shirts .

Big Al assisted Wayne with the ever so difficult job of pouring pitchers of water on the already chilled ladies, and Daniel too. Fortunately for the crowd Daniel was one of the first to be eliminated along with some of the ladies. After a few rounds of water pouring and dancing the crowd was ready to make a decision. Wayne called upon the crowd to make some noise to nominate their favorite chilly bust to win. The reaction was so close that the two remaining contestants decided to split the money. It was a total win for everyone, except Daniel, although someone in the crowd did stuff a wrinkly one dollar bill in his tight cold t-shirt for the effort. Sorry for the mental image, yall. Back to the lovely ladies, they split the $200 cash prize for their efforts. Thanks to Wayne of Biker Trash Nation and Tracey of Ted’s Kicken Chicken for rocking another bike night. Southern Distilling Company Welcomes Bikers Story by Alan Dockery t’s no secret that bikers might enjoy a sip of a drink with some alcohol in it. I’m glad to see most of y’all drink responsibly and don’t ride when you shouldn’t. But I encourage y’all to ride on over to Southern Distilling Company in Statesville, NC, for a tour. See how premium bourbon is made in a modern distillery. You’ve been to the breweries and vineyards already. Move up to a distillery tour. I was born in Statesville and didn’t know about the legal history of whiskey around here. Shucks, they are planning a fine new Straight Rye Whiskey under the Celebrated Old Hunting Creek Rye brand name. That was once a revered brand prior to Prohibition. I’m looking forward to it since my Papa took me fishing and hunting on that creek for years. And I saw Daddy buy many gallons of local whiskey at Dash’s Store by the road to the creek. In 2013, husband and wife team Pete and Vienna Barger purchased a 20-acre farm in Pete’s hometown of Statesville with the notion of founding their own distillery. As they began that adventure, they stumbled onto something they, nor most anyone, was aware of – the deep and rich history of whiskey and brandy distilling that had dominated the Statesville region in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Deeply moved by what they learned, the Bargers decided to produce bourbon and rye whiskeys and bring a piece of history back to its rightful birthplace. They called their new venture The Southern Distilling Company and would dedicate the next three years to crafting their plan and building a state-of-the-art destination distillery in Statesville. The Southern Distilling

Company was established as one of the largest and most advanced craft distilleries in the nation, setting a new standard and leading the revitalization of whiskey distillation in North Carolina, the original birthplace of whiskey in the U.S. In 1789, the city of Statesville North Carolina was incorporated when Irishman, Fergus Sloan, sold the town commissioners a 70-acre tract of land. Sloan had arrived in the region nine years earlier bringing with him the state’s first copper and tin pot still. At the time, grain crop agriculture was the county’s lead industry. As crop supply began to overtake local demand, local farmers began to distill their excess grains into alcohol. They quickly discovered alcohol would sell for ten times that of raw grains and soon stills were popping up all over the county. The alcohol trade continued to explode with the completion of the Western North Carolina Railroad and the Atlantic, Tennessee and Ohio (ATO) railroad lines in 1858. From that point on, thousands of gallons of liquor were shipped from and through Statesville branding this humble North Carolina city “The Liquor Capital of the World”. Meanwhile, the temperance movement was gaining strength and in 1902, the state’s Anti-Saloon League was established. In 1903, the Watts Act was passed prohibiting the manufacture and sale of liquor outside incorporated towns followed by statewide Prohibition in 1909. With Prohibition came the mass exodus of North Carolina distillers, many headed west to Kentucky and Tennessee to rebuild their businesses and sow the seeds for what would eventually be hailed as the home of U.S. Whiskey production. Others fled to the hills to produce moonshine, which they would sell illegally in North Carolina and beyond. In 1920, nationwide Prohibition was passed only to be repealed 13 years later as a result of overwhelming national opposition. While Kentucky and Tennessee were busy building their Whiskey empires, North Carolina took a more staid approach. The state did not officially recognize the 21st amendment until 1937 when the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control System was established. Statesville, however, did not organize its first ABC board for alcohol sales until 1973 – 40 years

later. Fast forward to 2012, Pete and Vienna Barger knew the time was right to set in motion the historic return of Whiskey distillation to the city of Statesville. They mapped out a long-term plan to build a state-of-the-art destination distillery and lay the groundwork for launching Southern Distilling’s own superpremium branded bourbons and custom contract whiskey production services. By 2017, Southern Distilling Company officially began distilling operations, securing its place in history as the first licensed distillery in the “liquor capital of the world” since 1903. While they wait out the minimum 2-5 years in barrel to age the new distillate, the Bargers are blending and bottling their new bourbons from carefully sourced distillate and distilling and producing other award-winning spirits. The distillery also offers custom mash bill contract whiskey production and co-packaging services for other distilleries and brand owners. In August 2017, Southern Distilling Company launched its first branded bourbons in North Carolina. The super-premium range, already earning a collection of awards from prestigious international spirits competitions includes: Southern Star 10-Year Reserve High Rye, Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 50% ABV, Southern Star Standard High Rye, Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 45% ABV, Southern Star Single Barrel High Rye Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 45% ABV, Southern Star Cask Strength High Rye Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 61.1% ABV, Southern Star White Whiskey Distilled from Bourbon Mash, 50% ABV, and Southern Star Double Shot Coffee Bourbon Cream Liqueur, 15% ABV. In addition to its own award-winning branded products, Southern Distilling can make and bottle custom bourbon for you. They offer contract distilling services for domestic and foreign brand owners, distilleries and retailers including custom distilling, warehousing, and bottling/packaging services. Stop And Think First Bros and Bro-ettes In Matthew 12: 33-34 Jesus said, “Either make the tree sound and its fruit sound or make the tree rotten and it’s fruit rotten; for the tree is known and recognized and judged by its fruit. (34) You off spring of vipers: How can you speak good things when you are evil. For out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.” Have you ever thought about your body and the worst and what the most harmful part of it is? It’s your tongue. You can say something to someone and you might be kidding, but they take it the wrong way. It’s too late then to take it back even if you apologize. They might tell you that they forgive you, but the hurt is deep down. Our church people or your so called religious people, even if they’re in a ministry, they can hurt you worse than the people in the world. That’s why we all have to be very careful of what we say. We need to stop and think before we open our mouth. A lot of us stereotype people, especially according to what they look like or even what they wear. How many times have you caught yourself talking about someone that has their pants hanging too low? I’m guilty myself, and if you say you haven’t done something similar, you just told a lie, because we’re all human. There wasn’t but one sinless person in the world and we’re not it. His name was Jesus. Gossip is another thing we need to watch. When you hear

someone say something about a person or another ministry, stop and think about it before you talk about them. Go to the source and find out the truth. If you are not willing to do that then keep your mouth shut. What we really need to do is stop and pray about it. If you have to get your bracelet out, you know the one you got hidden away that says WWJD, then do it! Too often people make promises to themselves and to God, “I’m going to do better, I’m going to start speaking better and not gossip.” Some of us have really tried, but nothing changes, because we are trying to change our words and not our thoughts and heart. You’ve heard that out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. We allow Satan to fill our minds with bad stuff and critical and harsh thoughts. Jesus said that a tree is known by its fruit. Everything begins with a thought, if we allow negative and unkind thoughts to fill our minds that is the kind of fruit we’ll bear. The more you think of kind and loving thoughts the more we see good in people around us and the less we want to gossip. The more we read God’s Word and pray and open ourselves up to the Holy Spirit’s positive thoughts, the more good fruit we produce on the inside, then the good fruit will come out

and show on the outside by the way we talk and treat others. In Matthew 7:3-5 Jesus admonished the disciples, “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own. (4) How can you think of saying, ‘Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye’; when you can’t see past your own eye? (5) Hypocrite! First get rid of the log from your own eye; then perhaps you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.” Prayer: Dear loving and forgiving God, I ask you to forgive us for all the harsh things we’ve said about other people. Also, please forgive us for allowing harsh thoughts to fill our minds, about ourselves or about others. I know we can’t make ourselves more loving, but you can. 1st Annual Blessing Of The Bikes

By: Bill Gallaway he 1st Annual Oconee County, SC Blessing Of The Bikes was held on Saturday, August 25th. This event was supported by the Bikers For Christ Twin Lakes Chapter in Seneca, SC. The event welcomed all bikers, and since the weather was fantastic, it drew a crowd of 64 bikers. This ride was dedicated in memory of Larry Starnes who passed last month as a result of a hit and run accident that occurred as he was turning into the driveway of the church to pick up some fliers for this very event. The event began at Grace Baptist Church, 15195 Wells Hwy in Seneca, SC. Registration began at 9 am. I arrived at 9:45, so after visiting with some old friends and getting registered, it was about time to head out. It was KSU at 10 am and we rumbled through the streets of Seneca, SC toward Salem, SC and onward to our first stop along SC 130 to Whitewater Falls. After everyone walked to the falls for photo opportunities, it was back to the bikes for water and the next scheduled stop, which was the Fred W. Symmes Chapel at Pretty Place located in Cleveland, SC. I had to break off at this point before seeing Pretty Place, but having been there before I knew the beauty I was missing. I left the group before returning back to the church for the bike blessings, free food, and prizes. I understand everyone had a blessed time and are looking forward to another next year.

Tribute To Chef Ray

ay Tracy passed away on August 26, 2018. He was only 52 years old; however, he was able to have three careers in one lifetime. Ray began his working career as a police officer in Detroit, Michigan. However, he soon realized this was not for him. Thus, he used his law enforcement skills to run seven night clubs in Detroit. Ray was so successful that he was written up in the paper several times. He was able to assist the police on many occasions to stop trouble before things got out of hand. Ray’s final career was that of an executive chef. He was employed by FMU (Francis Marion University) for seven years. During this tenure he prepared well over one million meals. Ray also was very active as a volunteer in the Florence Community. He loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Florence Baptist Temple. In addition, Ray donated his time and his talents to the local food bank. Ray’s other passion besides his “chef skills” was his love for motorcycles. He and his redheaded mistress rode all over the Pee Dee. Ray loved working for The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Each month he faithfully delivered his magazines. According to Ray, this was the best magazine ever. I am Mary Beth Harllee, Ray’s faithful companion. We worked together delivering the magazine. I am a college professor who gained much wisdom from Ray. We were to be married at Christmas, but I know Ray is now enjoying the awards he so richly deserves in heaven. 8th Annual Shriners Children’s Hospital Benefit And Ride

By: Karen Hatchett ugust 18th was a questionable day as far as the weather was concerned. Clouds were in the sky and the possibility of rain was in the forecast, but it did not stop the 8th Annual Shriners Children’s Hospital Benefit And Ride. Over 30 bikes rode from Double D Burn Out Saloon, to JR’s Corner Tavern in High Point, and Ole Watering Hole in Wallburg. Crossroads Band rocked the stage back at Double D. Everyone enjoyed great BBQ and chicken plates, prepared by Butch & Carol Medders, Jack Reeves and Gary Cox. Special guest, local Good Morning Show Meteorologist, Ed Matthews of News 2 showed up to support this cause. Each year, all funds raised are sent to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, SC, where Karen and Scott Hatchett’s son, Blake Hall received orthopedic and prosthetic care for 18 years. The Shriner’s Hospital provides free care to Children under the age of 18. Shriners Hospitals For Children is a network of 22 non-profit medical facilities across North America. Children with orthopedic conditions, burns,

spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. All expenses for the hospitals are paid by donations. Each facility costs over $1,000,000 a day to run. The ride was great, with no rain, and the clouds kept the riders on the cool side. Each stop was enjoyable with giveaways for all the riders. Once riders returned to Double D, everyone enjoyed the music and food, with Candi and Nikki serving drinks to all who attended making sure no one was thirsty. The attendance and support was heartfelt by all. Even with Ed Matthews with us, the rain came during the raffle, which was no problem moving everything inside for the auction. The largest auction item was the late Pete Belmonte’s Harley-Davidson leather jacket, with highest bid of $500. Several corporate donations and all who participated helped in exceeding our goal raising $10,828 for the Children’s Hospital! Without the help and support of all involved, this event could not be the success it has been for the past 8 years. The 2019 Shriners Children’s Hospital Benefit And Ride promises to be even bigger with a donated custom Golf Cart for raffle! This is a benefit you do not want to miss.

Tii Tharpe Wins NHRA Championship Story by Alan Dockery Photos by Sandra Alberti abor Day Weekend wound down Monday afternoon. But for us old drag racing fans that’s when they are running eliminations at the National Hot Rod Association Mello Yello Drag Racing Series U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. For Harley drag racing fans it was the last race of the season in the Top Fuel Harley class. And Tii Tharpe, East Bend, NC, was 18 points behind the leader. Both Tii and Doug Vancil won their elimination rounds and met in the final. Across the Carolinas, you could hear cheering as Doug slowed and Tii streaked to the finish line. It came down to the final hundreds of feet in the final round of the final race of the season for Tii to move ahead in points and win the race and the championship. Tii finished seven points ahead of Doug. Tii Tharpe won the biggest race in drag racing and the most prestigious drag racing championship in the world. The first race of 2018 had us Carolina fans bummed out bad and thinking any chance of a championship for the Jay Turner Racing Team, Liberty, NC, was over from the start. The whole team missed the first race of the season. On the way to Pomona, CA, the hitch broke and the trailer full of race bikes took off on its own. Luckily, it skidded to the side of the road and stopped safely. But the chance of winning the national title started off real slim. Since for 2018 the NHRA was counting all ten races for the championship, not just your best eight. “We regrouped and started our season in Phoenix,” Tii said. “So, I didn’t pay much attention to points this year, even at the last race. I know other folks did. I only had room to gain. I’d look at the website after updates to see how we were doing.” All year he was behind. The points leader all season was Doug Vancil, a former racer from New Mexico who had returned in 2018. Doug was always a top-level team with major sponsors and one of the best builders and tuners, Mike Romine. They won a few races in 2018. “We were doing pretty good and winning races. Then we got to Epping and I went out in the first round,” Tii said. “Then Doug went out the first round in Seattle. I joked with folks what if it comes down to the final round in the final race. You can’t make that stuff up.” Tii was living a fairytale. Tii was one round away from the NHRA National Championship after qualifying at the U.S. Nationals. A round is worth 20 points. All it would take is for Doug to lose a round and Tii advance to earn the title since he was only 18 points behind.

Toss in a few bonus points to account for how it wound up as seven in the end. “Doug got into the field in the fourth qualifying round and was eighth in an eight-bike field,” Tii said. “This was probably the quickest and tightest Top Fuel Harley field ever in any sanction. The bump spot was 6.33 with Jay qualified number one at 6.22.” It was a nail-biter all day as both racers advanced through eliminations. Sure, enough it came down to the final round, winner takes it all, the race and the championship. “I tried to hit the tree and he did too,” Tii said. “We both had .043 lights. He was tuned a little more aggressive than us down low. I could see him. Then he dropped a hole and I went by him at half-track. At that point I thought I’m glad I didn’t redlight or do something stupid cause I won.” During the season Tii won five races total so he is the legit champ. He won Phoenix, Gainesville, Bristol, Seattle and Indy. Doug won three races. The Jay Turner Race Team was on the road for a long stretch this Summer making several races out West and in Canada. Mike Scott was riding the bike at a non-NHRA event. A mishap occurred and destroyed the motor blowing it all to pieces. “Well there is a little motor that I’ve always been fond of,” the champ said. “And it was real easy to put in the frame since it was sitting there fresh. I finished the season with that motor which is 20 inches smaller than others run.” “Winning at Bristol was special on Fathers’ Day since my family was there. Wining at Gainesville was special. And Indy. It has been since the late seventies, was the last time a Harley fuel bike won at Indy. I first saw Tii roaring down the Rockingham Dragway soon after I retired from the service and returned to Carolina. They had some big Harley drags at The Rock in those days. He was part of the Wood Pile group, racing with Scott Wood and that crew. His dad, Marty Tharpe, bought the All Harley Drag Racing Association in 1997. Craig Tharpe is his uncle and got into the drag racing and ran it for many years. By 2000 Tii progressed into Pro Dragster, the carbureted, small engine nitro bikes. At the end of the year banquet, Weasel and Johnny Cool asked Tii to ride the Pro Fuel bike. Then he really got his feet wet in nitromethane. Now he has several NHRA Wallys and a championship. Tii is president of SPEVCO, Special Vehicles Company, which manufactures and operates a lot of equipment you have seen in many places. They make the hospitality trailers you see at races. Yeah, those portable, two-level bars you hang out

at. When you are checking out a company’s display or buying souvenirs you are probably leaning on their work. They build special equipment for government and medical and other uses. And what about that awesome machine. Here are the basics of the bike named Maddy. It’s named after Mike Lehman’s daughter who is often at the races watching Tii put her namesake in the winner’s circle. The bike weighs 1030 pounds with the rider. The small motor is only 177 cubic inches and runs on 98 percent nitromethane. It makes a thousand horsepower and has a two-speed transmission and 14-inch-wide slick to attempt to put that power to the strip. The quickest and fastest Maddy has been is 6.16 second and 231 miles an hour. Y’all want to see Top Fuel Harleys and many other classes of Harley drag bikes, then join the thousands of fans who will be camped at and loving the American Motorcycle Racing Association’s 27th Annual Jim McClure All Harley Nitro World Finals, featuring the Ray Price Top Fuel Challenge at Rockingham Dragway October 11 – 14.

9th Annual Eagle Riders Dean Ferris Memorial Ride

By: Jerry Shelton he 9th Annual Eagle Riders Dean Ferris Memorial Ride on August 25 was a huge success. It was a beautiful summer day for a great fundraiser ride. We started the day at Thunder Road Harley-Davidson in Danville, VA. We got there about 9:30 and Joe, the Thunder Road H-D manager, had coffee, soda, and donuts waiting for everyone. Registration was from 11 am until KSU at 1 pm. The whole staff at Thunder Road H-D was a great help putting up table and

chairs for us as well also a nice donation for Danville Pittsylvania Cancer Association. About a dozen bikes entered our bike show and people voted with dollars. We sold T-Shirts and I know at least one of our riders purchased a brand new Trike before the ride started. Our Martinsville Sheriff’s Office motorcade escort arrived about 12:45 and a big thanks to them. After some pictures, a “thank you” to the riders, and a prayer for a safe ride we mounted up for our journey. Seventy-

four bikes and several cars headed out of Thunder Road Harley-Davidson. It was a 75 mile ride with 3 stops. Our first stop was at Blairs Volunteer Fire And Rescue. It was a great place to draw cards and take a bathroom break. There was a Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Deputy there that helped us get back on the highway. Twenty miles later, stop two was at a small convenience store out in the country called Paul’s place. It was so small that we barely got all the bikes on the lot. The folks at the store were glad we made it a stop for the second year in a row. Our third and final stop before our destination was Kentuck Volunteer Fire Department. At a left turn right before the last stop, we had one rider go down, but he was OK. He was just a little sore and shook up. He said he hit the front brake too hard while turning, but all was OK. When we arrived at the Fraternal Order Of Eagles, there was a long row of people waving good old American Flags to greet us. Everyone made it inside for hot dogs, homemade chili, slaw, onions, chips, and tea. After we ate, we had a silent auction, alive auction, and door prizes. OH announced the poker hand and 50/50 winners with both donating most of it back. It was a great ride for the Danville Pittsylvania Cancer Association. The 13th Annual Marion Moose Riders Show By: Wally Wersching n Saturday September 1st, the Marion Moose Riders held their 13th Annual Bike Show at the Marion Moose Family Center next to Lake James. I went last year, and enjoyed myself, so I wanted to go again this year. The website said that it would all start with breakfast at 9 am, and the bike show registration would start at 10 am. There would be bike games all through the day, with door prizes, and delicious food. They were also raffling off a Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle. At about 10:15 am, I headed north on Rte. 226. The skies were partly cloudy, and the temp was warming into the mid 80’s. I turned right onto Rte. 221 and followed it all the way into Marion. I turned left onto Rte. 70. On the east side of Marion, I followed the signs to the Moose Family Center. Because I wasn’t entering “Miss Vickie” in the show, I parked on the side away from the show bikes. I walked to the registration table and asked for the person in charge. I had brought the October 2017 issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine to give to the Moose Riders. In it was my article about last year’s event. I gave it to a man called “Pineapple”. He hadn’t seen it before. He was pleased, and thanked me for writing it, and bringing it for them to read. I heard the DJ playing some great tunes all day. It was just loud enough to hear and enjoy without making everybody yell to be heard over the music. I walked around and took a few pictures. There were not many bikes in the show, yet, but there were a lot of vendor tents around the perimeter of the lot. They were selling everything from shaved ice to rifle slings, and everything in between.

By now it was noon, and the food was being served. Almost instantly, a line formed. The food smelled good, and from what I could see in the Styrofoam containers, the hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixin’s looked good, too. This year, the Moose Riders were raffling off a 2006 HarleyDavidson 1200 Sportster. I didn’t need or want another Harley but I bought a ticket anyway. It was only $10, and it was for the Needy Kids Christmas Fund. I met a few friends who came up from Forest City. I shared more magazines with them. It was an interesting event, and I will go again next year. It was an enjoyable ride home. Afterwards, I convinced Cindy to go out for a delicious lunch at our favorite restaurant. It was fun, and a great way to spend a Saturday.

Bike Night With Riding High Harley-Davidson By: WildThing e were invited to attend the first ever Bike Night With Riding High HarleyDavidson on September 5. The weekly festivities began at 7 pm at KickBack Jack’s in High Point and will continue every Wednesday evening until the weather turns. Waddaya do at a bike night? Well, you hang out with other like-minded folks, check out the bikes that roll in, usually grab some food and a cold beverage or two. Think of it, it’s a warm, balmy evening, you’re off work and go for a really nice putt over to KBJ, now repeat every Wednesday until your leathers are not enough to keep you warm. At this first ever, Rick Johnson, Marketing Director at Riding High Harley-Davidson along with Sales Manager, Reade Fulton, Liz from MotorClothes, and other staff were all on hand to kick off the bike night in style. 14th Annual Bull City Rumble

By: Ed Cleary Hundreds of motorcycles and scooters from around the world were gathered in Durham’s historic Lucky Strike Tobacco Warehouse District this past Labor Day Weekend for the 14th Annual Bull City Rumble. This world-renowned vintage motorcycle and scooter rally was a 3 day event hosted by Ton Up NC, a small, not for profit group of motorcycle enthusiasts. Bull City Rumble has its roots in the traditional rivalry of Mods vs. Rockers, the sensationalized clash of two youth cultures - scooter riding mods and motorcycle riding rockers, in 1960’s England. The event has evolved from its humble beginnings in a parking lot in 2005 to a multi-venue, multi-day rally which drew thousands of enthusiasts from all over the world. Judges said in order to be eligible for consideration in each of the 7 classes the machine must be in running and operational condition. And judges were not necessarily looking for the prettiest and cleanest machines

but were also looking for well ridden bikes with personality and craftsmanship. Southern Riders Motorcycle Club 7th Anniversary

By: Trisha Photo: Chi outhern Riders Motorcycle Club (SRMC) of Robeson County celebrated their 7th anniversary on July 14, 2018. The chapter was started on July 9, 2011. Since that time, the SRMC of Robeson County has supported many events to help Robeson County as well as supporting their neighboring counties’ Southern Riders Chapters. This day was a day for celebration. On this day, they celebrate seven years of dedication to Southern Riders Motorcycle Club, RobCo Style! This day they look back to celebrate the numerous contributions they were able to make to the local programs in the area. Southern Riders Motorcycle Club is proud and honored to have taken part in so many worthwhile and charitable causes such as Christmas programs to assist the Robeson County Youth, the Robeson County Family Violence Program, as well as an abundant amount of participation and support to local county benefits that support the ill, injured and disadvantaged. Their efforts are continued as they ride to support others in need throughout the Robeson County area. The SRMC of Robeson County take great pride in their efforts and their sense of community. Their efforts are to make as much of a positive impact on the area as possible and they are working their way to their goals one charity, one benefit, and one person at a time. 9th Annual Knobbies Ride the Blue Ridge By Wally Wersching n Friday September 14th to Sunday the 16th, the Knob Mountain Motorcycle Club held their 9th Annual “Ride the Blue Ridge” rally at the Catawba Meadows Park in Morganton, NC. The “Knobbies” are a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who meet every Sunday morning about 8:00AM at the Timberwood Restaurant in Morganton, and then go for a day-long ride to “who knows where”. They were originally a BMW Motorcycle Owners Club, but now they welcome all kinds of bikes to their rides. They are a friendly and warm group of individuals. Info: www.knobbies.org The facility, the Catawba Meadows Park, is an excellent facility which keeps getting better every year. The City of Morganton is one of the sponsors of the event. In 2009, the Knobbies started holding the “Ride the Blue Ridge” event, and it was a hit with bikers – both local, and not so local. Bikers came from up and down the east coast, and even Canada. Every year, they try to improve on last year’s event. The Knobbies rally is not like most of the normal biker rallies. There’s no loud band – there’s not even loud bikes. This year, the focus of the rally was riding scenic roads with friends – old and new. They had guided “Ride Along with the Knobbies” rides from off-roading to leisurely cruising down the back roads. The rides all end back at the Catawba Meadows in the evening for storytelling and camaraderie. Many of the participants stayed at the park

overnight. Some brought motorhomes and travel trailers for comfort. Others camped or stayed at local motels. This year, the Knobbies had a major challenge – Hurricane Florence. Even though the hurricane was bearing down on the North Carolina coast, they still decided to hold the rally. They watched the radar closely, and at the last moment, decided that the “Rally was on”. They were hoping that the bad weather would hold off until Sunday so that they’d have a couple days of fun riding in the mountains. I decided to visit them on Friday morning, and bring a stack of “Full Throttle” magazines for the participants. If it did rain, they’d need something to read. I got there at about 8:45AM, and a few bikes were already lined up to go for the day’s ride. The weather was perfect with temps in the 70’s, and no rain predicted for Friday. I walked around and talked with many of the Knobbies along with some of the rally goers. They were all anticipating a great weekend at the rally but there was always the threat of bad weather from Florence in the back of their minds. The rides were waiting for more rally goers to arrive, so they’d have a nice group. The rally goers were coming in slowly and when they heard the rally was on and saw that the storm wouldn’t hit until sometime Saturday, they decided to come for Friday at least. New this year, was an auction. Many local companies and individuals donated articles to be auctioned off. All the proceeds would go to the Children’s Advocacy Center of South Mountain Children and Family Services. When I left, I took the scenic way home – south on Rt 64. I turned south on Rt 226 and got home at 11:00. Cindy and I met our son, Danny, and granddaughter, Hannah, for a nice lunch. It was a great way to spend a retirement morning.

Harley-Davidson Footwear Midland Riding Sneaker By: Buzz I’m no safety nazi, and I don’t try to tell other people what to wear when they ride. As for me, I believe in a few things for safety and tradition as it goes for riding gear. Traditionally I am a black boot wearing rider, for safety it has to be over the ankle. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is lucky enough to work with high quality companies like Harley-Davidson Footwear and when they proposed we try out some of their up and coming riding sneakers, I was a little skeptical, being a traditional riding boot guy. Harley-Davidson Footwear makes high quality products and their new line of Riding Sneakers is no different. So, I picked up a brand spanking new pair of Midland Riding Sneakers to give them the test. Let me tell you, these things are HOT! I was initially intrigued by how solid the full grain uppers are on the Midland. It did take a day or two to break them in, no different than any shoe or boot I have worn, but for a sneaker these suckers are tough! The Midland comes in black or grey both with white, slip resistant cement construction outsoles. The look is similar to the Pumas or Chuck Taylors I wear in non-riding situations, so they fit right into my style. I can wear these with shorts or long pants, riding or not, and still rock the Harley-Davidson Bar and Shield that is featured on the tongue and the ankle of the shoe. The Leather grain is tough and durable in all-weather situations, yet soft to the touch like suede. I was concerned that shifting would be uncomfortable or would wear through the tops, so far, I have been pleasantly surprised. You can feel the shifter through the shoe, but the thickness of the leather is apparent. They did leave a shifter mark on the top that knocked of the newness that makes you look like a weekend warrior. The Poron® (fine pitch open cell urethane foam) ankle protection is comfortable, flexible, and lightweight yet is designed to absorb 90% of

energy when impacted at high strain rates. So, we have the safety concerns checked off. This moto shoe also features waterproof full grain leather to keep your feet dry and safe on the road. Lined with breathable Hydro-Guard waterproof membranes, your feet will be thanking you even after the storm passes. Just for some extra kick Harley-Davidson Footwear added Reflective laces that give you that added pop for safety and style. They also include a white lace, if that’s your thing. Overall, I really dig this “moto shoe” and haven’t worn my boots riding since I put these on. I like the looks, comfort and the functionality of the Midland. Smokin’ Harley-Davidson Ladies Garage Party

By: Caroline Most everyone gets it now. Motorcycle riding is no longer a gender specific sport. While this is commonly accepted now, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson has embraced it. Not only do they embrace this market, they go out of their way to address the needs, and ideas specific to lady riders. The garage party they hosted this past August, was a prime example of the great way they reach out to the female population. It doesn’t matter how many of the garage parties I attend, I admit, I love going to them and this one was no exception. When I arrived, everyone was served food and drinks. We took this opportunity to get to know each other and look around at all the items in the store. After everyone was settled with food and a glass of wine, beer, or a soft drink, General Manager, Ray Perry, introduced the Smokin’ staff. Brother Bill in Marketing, Brian from Service, Eric in parts, and Brandy in MotorClothes all stayed after hours to make sure all the lady attendees had a great experience. How awesome is that? Some of the activities this evening involved learning how to pick up a bike that has fallen over. I know that this is something that everyone thinks will not happen, but it will. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when, and what circumstances are involved. You may not have a riding accident, but uneven pavement can cause you to lose your balance when stationary. This is just one example of many ways that demonstrate that

Riders’ Roost Luau Party Story and photo by Alan Dockery ain ain’t been kind to bikers this summer, so it was great to have a beautiful Labor Day Weekend for an End Of Summer Luau at Riders’ Roost in Ferguson, NC. I rolled in Saturday morning to smiling friends and a fun weekend. The Roost was already getting covered with tents and bikes as people rode in from across the region. I saw folks I know from drag racing, the antique motorcycle club, and other places that we enjoy motorcycles and hanging out. It looked like a good crowd was forming for a big party weekend. Lots of my friends were there from Old Roosters to new folks who will be coming back for more Roost Time. I spent a lazy afternoon just visiting with folks and feeding worms to the fish in my favorite creek. I hadn’t been in Elk Creek much this summer so had to spend some time in the

I think we are missing Yellow Duck #48 now since I saw him snuggled up in Karen’s I like to slip away shirt. My routine now is to ride The Cocks Comb every party at The Roost. I reckon 10 am was too early for folks to get in gear since only a few went with me. I’m still exploring alternatives in the route. Do you want scenic mountain views? Scared of a few miles of gravel mountain road? My tech tip, do not ride over snakes in the road if you can avoid them. A young Copperhead was in the road. If you ride over a snake, you can toss it on the rider behind you. Soon after we got back to camp it was Luau Time. Dave, Pam, Donnie, and the crew were cooking up lots of food for supper. A small pig was roasting in a contraption called the Cajun microwave. I hadn’t seen one of those since my days on the bayou. Dave covered the big pit in chicken. Donnie was doing the butts. Pam and the kitchen crew pulled it all together for as great a Luau Supper as we’ve had. If you are thinking about hosting an event at Riders’ Roost, keep in mind the great outdoor kitchen they have now.

As the day wound down, it was Luau Party Time. Folks spent the rest of the evening singing and dancing in the pavilion. The proudest moment was when we presented Chance Cleary with a big check for the money we raised this summer to help him. Hopefully, $7653.70 will be a big help to this young Army Veteran injured in Afghanistan. It was too hot and muggy for this tired old biker, so I only cruised through the party once in a while. Ain’t much better than sitting around the campfire, with friends at The Roost. There’s still a couple months for y’all to get some Roost time.

10th Annual Jace Man Run By: Wally Wersching In August of 2007, Wendy Panther’s five month old nephew, Jace, fell victim to abuse, and lost his life. Because of this, Wendy and her husband, Spanky, created the Jace Man Run to raise money for the Abuse Prevention Council (APC). Tragically on Sept. 7, 2012, at only 51 years of age, Wendy suddenly died from an accident at home. She loved children, and put her heart and soul into raising money to put an end to child abuse. This year’s Jace Man Run was lovingly dedicated in her memory. I read about the two-day event in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. On Friday, August 24th and Saturday August 25th, The Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) and the Concerned Bikers Association (CBA)/A.B.A.T.E. of Cleveland County were sponsoring the 10th Annual Jace Man Run at CCIB’s Land at 1596 Racepath Church Road in Mooresboro, NC. This year’s Jace Man Run was bigger than ever with live music provided by The Thunder Brothers on Friday night, and The Ricker Pickers on Saturday night. Saturday, starting at 3 pm, there was a live auction, 50/50 drawing, bike games, door prizes, food, and more. If anyone wanted to camp, there were places in the center of the Land available.

The poker run was on Saturday with groups leaving the Land at 10 am and 11 am. Individuals could start the run at any time with the last bike in by 2:00PM. I arrived a little before 2 pm. I wasn’t able to be at the Land when they left in the morning so I thought that I’d see them as they rode back to the Land at the end of the run. When I arrived, I made my donation. They gave me a wrist band and offered me a late lunch. The food at the end of the run was a delicious sub sandwich with all the fixin’s. It was very tasty, and filling. “Peg-Leg” was making homemade ice cream, too. I watched as the last of the run riders came in. They filled

the picnic tables as they ate. One of the riders was “Mrs. B”. I hadn’t seen her in years. We used to work together a few lifetimes ago. I always liked her. She always had a pleasant smile and still does! After I finished eating, I walked around. They were getting the field ready for the bike games. At the table, the CBA was selling “Tie-Died” event T-shirts. I bumped into “Radar”. He was looking at the table with all the stuff to be auctioned off. We used to work together, too. It’s nice to live in a small town, and be able to meet old friends from time to time. At 3 pm, the auction started. Most of the people at the event were seated under a large tent as the auction took place. I watched for a few minutes, and realized that this was not an ordinary auction. At most auctions, the bidders are looking for bargains but at this auction, the bidders were bidding more than the object was worth. All proceeds went to the Abuse Prevention Council (APC) to help stop child abuse in Cleveland County. Overall, there were over a hundred who participated in this year’s Jace Man Run but there were many more who contributed. The list of sponsors on the back of the t-shirt, was well over a hundred, included most of the local businesses, motorcycle clubs, and many individual citizens, too. Many people who won prizes and money at the event donated them back to the cause. The whole endeavor raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Abuse Prevention Council. It was a team effort of everybody working together that made it what it was. They are already planning for next year’s run, which will be bigger and better than this year’s.

Brother Deceased

By: James Ledbetter, Jr. ne of my Brothers, who was in a motorcycle accident this week, passed away September 12, 2018 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. His name is Aron “SNAKEMAN” Turpin of Cherryville NC. He is the President of the Gargoyles MC Fallston Chapter , and a member of the Board of Directors for same. He was a very close friend of mine, as this is the club I belong to. Aron was born June 2, 1978 in Princeton, West Virginia and he leaves behind a wife, son, and four daughters. Services were held Saturday September 15th and were handled by Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home of Fallston NC.

Rebel Son At The Wizard Saloon

Story and photo by Alan Dockery heard a few big ole rebel yells for my favorite Carolina band, Rebel Son, at my favorite biker bar, The Wizard Saloon in Hickory, NC, when they played the middle of August. Good to see a whole bunch of my rowdy biker buddies there for a good time. Rain threatened that day, but still the lower parking lot had some bikes and the outside beer tub was cold. Folks from around the Carolinas came to The Wizard since Rebel Son is well known and loved here. As I sat at the bar, I realized their influence reaches way beyond the Carolinas. Soon I was talking to fans who drove from Maryland and Pennsylvania to see Rebel Son. Rom and Brandon rode their Harleys 11 hours from New behaviors of my friends. different name for the roads than what the signs show. But it is worth it if you like a small, friendly local biker bar. The Wizard is the oldest biker bar in Hickory and every day and night bikers are welcome, not just one day a week. Thursday bike nights are also jam nights so bring your guitar or just come out and sing along. Music has been a focus at The Wizard since early on. Mike was working there before he bought it and saw how some bands packed the place. I meet folks who tell me about the feelings when their band played at The Wizard and how they have enjoyed others there. Rebel Son has played The Wizard a few times over the years. Now those guys are famous and draw a crowd of fans. Mike says they will be back and The Wizard should be on the bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s yearly schedule.

By: Gary Steelman Saturday, September 8th Crossfire United Methodist Church held their 10th Annual Jesus Rocks Rally. The air was filled with the smell of barbeque and the music from CJ Ballard. The music was as good as the barbeque. The bike show had 10 entrants, new Harleys and older customs and a few metric bikes. There were so many bikes it was hard to decide who to vote for. The newly formed chapter of Guardians Of The Children had a booth set up to help inform the biker community of the work they do as advocates for abused children. If you are interested in joining a great organization look them up on Facebook or check out their website GuardiansOfTheChildren.com. These men and women do great work standing by children who face their abusers in court and help them put their lives back together. The bands played all day long and handed out door prizes. There was something there for everyone, salvation, food, entertainment, games, and water play for the kids. Great friends got together again to show the love of Christ is for bikers, too. Crossfire has been a “touch stone” for folks from all walks of this life, bikers, and citizens alike. Looking for a place of worship where all are accepted and a come as you are church? Jimmy Jam By: Wendi Palone et me start off by introducing the Sentinels Of Hope. We are a group of bikers and non- bikers who help children who have suffered abuse and neglect and who are sick, elderly veterans, and families in need. We are a 501(c)3 club. One Hundred percent of our donations go to those in need. We have the opportunity to help a young man, Jimmy Brooks, and his family. In December Jimmy who is seventeen was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. Through his illness and going through chemo, Jimmy kept a brave front. Jimmy kept up his grades, graduated from high school, and is going to the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. The whole time, Jimmy worried about his single mom and how she was coping with the impact of this disease and how it was affecting their family finances. Sentinels Of Hope was approached about doing a fundraiser for the family, so we dug our heels in and made happen. This was planned for September 8th. We had tremendous success. Mooresville, NC, the community in which we live, donated an outpouring of items which we could raffle at our event. We approached Lancasterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s BBQ in Mooresville and they offered their establishment for our fundraiser, for which we were very grateful. With the help of our community and our mother chapter in Gastonia, our fundraiser to help Jimmyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family was a success.

A couple was getting ready to go to a Halloween party but the wife had a terrible headache. She told her husband to go anyway. After a short argument he agreed, and she took some aspirin and went to bed. Later she awoke and felt great, so she decided to go to the party and see what her hubby did when she wasn’t around. As soon as she arrived, she noticed him on the dance floor getting very friendly with every hottie in the place, and groping them when he could. She then cut in and rubbed close to him. When the song ended, he leaned over and whispered in her ear, “Let’s go outside.” So the two costumed characters snuck off and occupied themselves in one of the parked cars. Midnight was to be the unveiling of the partygoers, so she slipped out and went home before the clock struck twelve. When he got home she asked, “How was the party? Did you meet any interesting people?” He replied, ‘‘you know me, dear. I don’t have a good time when you’re not with me. I ran into a few friends and we ended up in the basement playing poker. It wasn’t very fun at all. But the guy I loaned my costume to had the time of his life!”

Three blondes were all applying for the last available position on the Highway Patrol. The detective conducting the interview looked at the three of them and said, “So y’all wanna be cops, huh?” The blondes all nodded. The detective got up, opened a file drawer, and pulled out a folder. Sitting back down, he opened it, pulled out a picture, and said, “To be detective, you have to be able to detect. You must be able to notice things such as distinguishing features and oddities like scars and so forth. “So, he stuck the photo in the face of the first blonde and withdrew it after about two seconds. “Now,” he said, “did you notice any distinguishing features about this man?” The blonde immediately said, “Yes, I did. He has only one eye!” The detective shook his head and said, “Of course he has only one eye in this picture! It’s a side profile of his face! You’re dismissed!” The first blonde hung her head and walked out of the office. The detective then turned to the second blonde, stuck the photo in her face for two seconds, pulled it back, and said, “What about you? Notice anything unusual or outstanding about this man?” “Yes! He only has one ear!” The detective put his head in his hands and exclaimed, “Didn’t you hear what I just told the last applicant? This is side picture profile of the man’s face! Of course you can only see one ear! You’re excused too!” The second blonde sheepishly walked out of the office. The detective turned his attention to the third and last blonde and said, “This is probably a waste of time, but....He flashed the photo for a couple of seconds and withdrew it, saying, “All right, did you notice anything distinguishing or unusual features about this man?” The blonde said, “I sure did... This man wears contact lenses.” The detective frowned, took another look at the picture, and began looking at some of the papers in the folder. He looked up at the blonde with a puzzled expression and said, “You’re absolutely right! His bio says he wears contacts! How in the world could you tell that by looking at his picture?” The blonde rolled her eyes and said, “Well, Hellooooooooo! With only one

eye and one ear, he certainly can’t wear glasses.”

A guy is looking for a place to sit in a crowded university library. He asked a girl: “Do you mind if I sit beside you?” The girl replied in a loud voice: “I don’t want to spend the night with you!” All the students in the library started staring at the guy; He was truly embarrassed and moved to another table. After a couple of minutes, the girl walked quietly to the guy’s table and said with a laugh: “I study psychology, and I know what a man is thinking. I guess you felt embarrassed, right?” The guy then responded in a loud voice: “$500 for one night? That’s too much!” All the people in the library looked at the girl in shock. The guy whispered to her: “I study law, and I know how to screw people.” The first testicular guard, the “Cup,” was used in hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.

Recently, a female Sheriff’s Deputy arrested Patrick Lawrence, a 22 year old white male, who was fornicating with a pumpkin in the middle of a field at night. The next day, at the Gwinnett County (GA) courthouse, Lawrence was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, public indecency and public intoxication. The suspect explained that he was passing a pumpkin patch on his way home from a drinking session when he decided to stop. “You know how a pumpkin is soft and squishy inside, and there was no one around for miles, or at least I thought there was no one around,” he stated. Lawrence went on to say that he pulled over to the side of the road, picked out a pumpkin that he felt was appropriate to his purpose, cut a hole in it and proceeded to satisfy his pressing need. “I was really into it, y’know?” he commented with evident embarrassment. In the process of doing the deed, Lawrence failed to notice an approaching sheriff’s car and was unaware of his audience until Deputy Brenda Taylor approached him. “It was an unusual situation, that’s for sure,” said Deputy Taylor. “I walked up to Lawrence and he’s just humping away at this pumpkin.” Deputy Taylor went on to describe what happened when she approached Lawrence ... “I said excuse me sir, but do you realize that you’re having sex with a pumpkin?” He froze and was clearly very surprised that I was there, and then he looked me straight in the face and said, “A pumpkin? Sh!t . Is it midnight already?’” The court (and the judge) could not contain their laughter. Lawrence was found guilty only of public intoxication, fined $10.00 and sent on his way.

13th Annual Regional Hospice Ride By: Wally Wersching n August 25th, the Southern Legends MC held their 13th Annual Regional Hospice Ride at the Spartanburg, SC Shrine Club on Fernwood Glendale Road. Registration started at 8:30 am with the escorted ride to start at 10 am. The $25 registration fee included a t-shirt for the first 200, a meal ticket for delicious BBQ with all the fixin’s after the ride, and a door prize ticket. There was also a 50/50 drawing. All this was to raise money for the Regional Hospice. The police escorted ride would start at the Shrine Club, then; ride on back roads through many of the small towns in the area, finally finishing back at the Shrine Club for food and festivities. One of my good friends told me about the run and suggested that I should attend. It sounded like a great cause so I left home about 7:45 am heading south on Rte. 150. I was glad that I wore my leather jacket. The temperature was in the upper 50’s, which was chilly for the end of August. After stopping for gas, I got on I-85 heading toward Spartanburg, SC. Luckily; I only stayed on I-85 for a few miles. The construction has the road surface all torn up making it difficult to stay in the lane. I exited at Rte. 110 toward Cowpens. After a few miles on a pleasant two-lane road, I turned right onto Rte. 29 in Cowpens. I followed Rte. 29 into Spartanburg and turned left onto Fernwood Glendale Road. After only a short distance, the Shrine Club was on the left. When I parked in the lot, there were only a few bikes there. I went inside to drop off a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines on the registration table. There was a line of people registering. All had t-shirts when they left. After I went back outside, I noticed two men standing near “Miss Vickie”. I walked over, and we talked for a while. We talked about why Polaris stopped production of Victory motorcycle, and how bad it was for whole the motorcycling community. The older man lived in nearby Union, SC. We walked

over to his motorcycle. It was a beautifully painted Harley. He said that he painted it after taking a class from a well-known bike painter. He is very talented. Most of the bikes in the lot were either Harleys or metric cruisers except for a few Victories. I was surprised to see five other Victory motorcycles in the group. Usually “Miss Vickie” is the only Victory. There was everything from the large Victory Vision to the relatively small Victory Octane. There was even a Victory Vegas Jackpot with its narrow 21 inch front tire and its huge 250mm wide rear tire. As it got closer to the 10 am time to leave, more and more bikes rolled in. Before long, the entire lot was full of motorcycles. I walked around talking to many old friends. At 10 am, there was a short prayer, and then the police car pulled out onto Fernwood Glendale Road which is a busy four-lane road. The oncoming traffic was stopped by members of the Shrine Club in order to let the entire group of motorcycles leave as a group. I stationed myself so that I could get a good view of the passing bikers. First was the police car, then all the different bikes, then an SUV towing a bike trailer and bringing up the rear was an American TransMed Ambulance. They thought of everything. Hopefully the last two vehicles were not needed during the ride. After they all roared by, I walked back to “Miss Vickie”. She was the only bike left in the lot. As I was getting ready to leave, a lady walked up and asked if I had any problems because I didn’t leave with the rest. That was the first time anyone asked if I needed help when I didn’t leave with the rest. I was pleasantly surprised. When I arrived home, Cindy and I went out for a delicious lunch. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning. I will come again next year. It’s for a great cause.
