ome people think that the riding season is winding down, but here at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine we believe that fall is a great time for riding and events. I suggest that the Cruisin’ Calendar confirms this viewpoint. Warm days and cool evenings are perfect for enjoying your motorcycle. There is a hint of color in some of the leaves, which may signal the beginning of a very colorful fall. I encourage you to take a look at the Cruisin’ Calendar on the following pages and take advantage of these beautiful fall days. I heard one of the commentators on the morning news mention that there are only 90 days until Christmas! While I, personally, think it is too early to think about Christmas, Toy run season IS just around the corner. Now is the time to get yours listed in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Cruisin’ Calendar for FREE. You can e-mail your event info or Flyer to: BikerEvents@FTCarolinas.com. or you can message it to us on Facebook. Your event will be listed in the print edition, the online edition, and go out in our weekly e-blast all for FREE! If you have a flyer already made up and would like to have it displayed for 20,000 readers in N&S Carolina to see, we have a very special reduced rate to print it in our next issue. We take our 12-month (lowest) rate and cut it in half! You can have your readymade flyer printed for as little as $82.50. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Cruisin’ Calendar is the most extensive event listing on the east coast. If you want to reach the most riders, your event MUST be included. Do it now and it will run in every issue until your event happens. Who loves ya, baby? The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, 255 issues strong, that’s who!

WELCOME BACK MY FRIENDS TO THE SHOW THAT NEVER ENDS... WE’RE SO GLAD YOU COULD ATTEND, COME INSIDE, COME INSIDE...

I

Concerned Bikers Association Fall Bike Show & Swap Meet sponsored by Tilley’s Harley Davidson of Salisbury. Our show has been going on for 48 years thanks to all of fine folks supporting us. This ain’t a t-shirt show, folks. It is a real swap meet and bike show put on by real bikers. Our members work hard to put on a good show for your enjoyment. If you’ve been to one of our shows, you know there will be a building full of beautiful show bikes to look at. There will be 2 buildings and a barn and a giant outdoor midway full of vendors. Come early if you want to find those antique parts you’ve been looking for. You can find something that you want or need…from a new set of tins, a new front end, tires, a rolling chassis, engines, transmissions, or a complete motorcycle. You can find biker jewelry, leathers, boots, t-shirts, you name it, it will be here including food and beverages. There will be 2 bands playing all day for your listening pleasure. On Saturday we will have a “wet-t-shirt contest” with a cash prize of $500 and a ladies “best buns contest” with a cash prize of $500, also. The bike show will have trophies and a $1,000 People’s Choice Award which will be awarded on Sunday afternoon. Also, on Sunday, we will have a ‘meet and greet’ with Chelsea Charms, sponsored by MAL Entertainment. Chelsea has the world’s largest *****, well, you just have to come out and see. We will be open both days from 10am-6pm. Saturday admission is $15 for one day or $25 for the weekend. Sunday admission will be 2 for $20 until noon. Also, Sunday will be a $5 discount to all Veteran’s, but you must show proof of service. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, is sponsoring a “Freedom Ride” on Saturday, November 9. The ride will leave 711 West Main Street, Jamestown, NC at 11am and head for the swap meet. One bike with one rider will cost $25. One bike with a rider and passenger will be $40. For your money, you get admittance to the bike show and swap meet, you get a one year membership to CBA which includes $3500 free accidental life/dismemberment insurance, a t-shirt, a goodie bag, and VIP parking. Give Lincoln a call to be included in the fun 336885-5400. Please remember NO PETS will be admitted to our show! We want to remind you that when you attend our show, or any CBA event across the State, all the money stays in North Carolina and is used to promote our sport and lifestyle and to be your eyes and voice in Raleigh and Washington, DC. We try to keep you informed of legislation that affects us as Bikers. We talk to legislators and let them know how you feel. We fight against some legislation and help introduce some favorable legislation, also. You need CBA and CBA needs you. We need a united motorcycle organization to have more impact with the Legislators. Remember, “United we stand….Divided we fall”. Join our/your organization now! We will be having a membership drive at our show. You can join Charlotte CBA for the low, low cost of $10.00 for a yearly membership or $20 for a year’s membership and an event t-shirt and help us represent you in Raleigh. (We can keep the cost down because of our Swap Meets.) One of the things that CBA uses the money for, and that I am most proud of, is our MSAP…Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program. This is where our CBA MSAP trained instructors, under the leadership of Keith Long, go into local high school drivers education classes and make students aware of motorcyclists that they will be sharing the road with. Our Charlotte MSAP Instructors have taught over 60,800 students! Hopefully this will save some lives. t is finally fall and time for the

Here Are Some Other Accomplishments Of CBA : Concerned Bikers Association=Freedom Fighters=CBA/ABATE of NC

Recent Accomplishments: No More Motorcycle Only Checkpoints: House Bill 381 (SL2011-216) prevents law enforcement agencies from establishing patterns for vehicle stops at checking stations based on a particular type of vehicle. Right-of-Way Protection for Motorcyclists: House Bill 113 (SL2011-361) significantly increases the penalties for crowding a motorcyclist out of his/her lane or causing injury to the motorcyclist. Expansion of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Training [MSAP]: House Bill 200 (SL2011-145) included a provision that requires drivers education instruction to include at least one hour of motorcycle safety awareness. More Protection from Drunk Drivers: Senate Bill 16 (SL201116) expanded authority of law enforcement officers to acquire blood samples from any person criminally charged in any case involving death by vehicle that is alcohol related. More Protection from Drunk Drivers: House Bill 49 (SL2011191) mandates active jail time for DWI offenders with three or more grossly aggravating factors and provides for enhanced monetary penalties and permanent revocation of the convicted person’s driver’s license. Motorcycle Red Light Law: If the light ‘trip’ has not recognized your motorcycle within 3 minutes, you may safely proceed through the intersection. Face Mask: It is legal for bikers to wear a face mask.

This year we are also working on bills to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Fine people for blowing grass clippings into the road. An anti-profiling bill. An equal access bill for all motorcycles. A freedom of choice bill for helmet use. And most important, a distracted driving bill.

We also get Proclamations from the State and many cities across our State declaring “May as Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Month in NC”. Charlotte CBA has fun and goes on runs and to events as a group. If you would like to join us, we meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at the Iron Thunder Saloon meeting room, Concord Mills. We will have a membership booth at the Swap Meet, also. Come out to our show on November 9-10, 2019 and support the CBA, our vendors, and our sponsors so that we can keep giving you the biggest, best, and oldest bike show and swap meet on the east coast. For vendor information, contact me, Rick Nail, 704-5771546 or go to CharlotteCBA.org and look under Swap Meet and Bike Show information. Check us out at CharlotteCBA.org. and be sure and go by Tilley’s Harley Davidson in Salisbury and check out their bikes, accessories, and apparel. See ya at the Swap Meet….Rowan County Fairgrounds, Exit 74 off I-85, Julian Road, Salisbury, NC. Don’t forget the CBA Toy Run, December 1 starting at Bojangles Coliseum parking lot on East Independence Blvd. Staging will begin at 11am with KSU at 1pm. The ride will go to Independence Harley-Davidson. For vendor or sponsor information on the toy run contact Mike Wiggins at 704-726-9444. Come on out and bring a new, unwrapped toy and help a child have a Merry Christmas! RIDE SAFE & RIDE FREE! Rick Nail

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 21st Anniversary Bike Night By: Lincoln Infield

H

21st birthday? Don’t remember, do you? Well if you do, you may be Amish or you just did it wrong. In August, the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine turned 21 years old, legal drinking age, if magazines could drink. Just because the magazine can’t drink doesn’t mean we don’t know anyone who can! So, in honor of our most recent milestone year the FT brain trust decided we would throw a parking lot party at our office, invite all our friends and give away free beer. Sounds like a good plan, right? August 20th was the official date of our shindig and the weatherman said that it was only a 70% chance of sunshine that day. We had already gotten several calls to see if we were still on for the evening. Well, yeah, were still gonna party no matter what! We had an awesome group of vendors coming out, including Ink Lab Tattoo, The Rebel Spirit, Indian Motorcycle Greensboro, Biker Trash Nation, Universal Customs Pinstriping and Airbrush, Vickie’s Handcrafted Creations, Grinnin Wolf, Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, CBA of NC, and OBABC. The dynamic duo of Robby and Erik who make up the band Double Down came out to keep everyone tappin their toes and singing along. We ow did you celebrate your

got them all set up by 6pm and then came the rumble. It was great to see so many of our friends come out to celebrate with us. Some folks we see quite regularly and others we hadn’t seen in years. We decided to put a little twist on the evening and came up with a parking lot dice run and made all the vendors “stops”. Roll the dice and see what ya get! The person who had the highest number at the end of the night won a “Man and Machine” feature. Brian Lange threw the top score of 93 and will be featured in an upcoming magazine. Dad (Mark) and I always take a few laps around the parking lot and pick out the “Best Bike On the Lot”, this is no easy quest. There were a lot of great bikes on the lot that night and some that would have won had they stayed! But at Judging time Jason Wood took home the top honor and a crispy $50 bill. Jason rode in on a blue and grey custom 2016 H-D Road Glide with a 26in front wheel and full air suspension. Congrats Jason.

It was starting to get late and even though we had stocked the coolers a few times, we were running low on beer. Double Down laid down their last few tunes and I grabbed a few of my buds to put cap on the evening. I had made a stop at South

of the Border earlier in the month and we proceeded to light up the evening with the finest Chinese sky candy we could afford. We were dyin laughing shooting those things off 4 at a time, apparently to the displeasure of the neighbors. You know what they say, it’s not a party till the Cops come. Well, the good news was, that was our night cap anyway! A huge thanks to all who came out to celebrate with us, all those who have stuck with us for 21 years, readers, FT Staff and advertisers alike. We have made so many lifelong friends in the past two decades that I really can’t go on and name them, but I hope they know that we hold their friendship in the highest regard. I couldn’t end this without thanking my family. 2nd Annual Blessing Of The Bikes

By: Bill Gallaway aturday, August 24 was the date for the 2nd Annual Blessing Of The Bikes. It was a rain or shine event sponsored by the Twin Lakes Chapter of Bikers for Christ. Registration was at 9:00 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Seneca, SC. I arrived at 9:00 a.m. and already there were 30 bikes lined up. As I was directed into the lineup of bikes, I recognized the license plate of the bike I had pulled up behind. Turns out it was a friend of mine from Georgia that I see on occasion, usually at biker functions, charity rides and events. While waiting to go on our short ride and get registered with our lunch and door prize ticket, the time was spent visiting with old friends and making new ones along with looking at everyone’s bikes, of course. I met riders from Georgia and as far away as West Virginia. It was KSU at 10:00 a.m. and it looked as though everyone that was going to ride was already there. Our ride kept us mostly on lightly traveled roads up through Seneca and Walhalla, SC to our destination at Stumphouse Tunnel. At the Tunnel, our parking fee was collected, and we made

S

our way up to the Tunnel. The Tunnel is an incomplete tunnel built for the Blue Ridge Railroad in 1853. The Tunnel was purchased in 1951 by Clemson University and used to store the university’s blue cheese until 1970. Temperature in the tunnel is a constant 50 degrees with humidity of 85%. While visiting the tunnel, we encountered a snake as he welcomed us to his home.

The ride back took us on to some roads I’ve never been on. They say take the road less traveled. Well, we did and there was no traffic. Upon returning to Grace Baptist Church, we were served a fabulous Low Country Boil lunch followed by our choice of delicious desserts. There were many door prizes awarded followed by the Blessing of the Bikes and some games. A Blessed day was enjoyed by all that attended. I am looking forward to the 3rd Annual Blessing of the Bikes. Come join us usually the last Saturday in August.

7th Annual Walkin’ Roll Dice Run Story and photo by Alan Dockery

W

7th Annual Walkin’ Roll Dice Run in Hickory, NC. For years, Sherrill Baxter has organized an event to raise money for the Walkin’ Roll Activities League, Inc. They are a non-profit providing free activities for children and adults with developmental disabilities. The goal is always $20,000 and this year Sherrill exceeded that again raising $26,460 I was proud to see more than 160 bikes and nearly 450 people at the fairgrounds when the ride ended. Folks played 269 cards in the Dice Roll. These folks stepped up to raise a bunch of money for the sports programs, dances, bowling, choir, plus personal needs of our neighbors. T-Shirts sold out early. They auctioned off the last one for $85. We even sold out of 50/50 tickets. This year’s ride brings the seven-year total to $139,000 raised. “Our league is a league of abilities, not disabilities. Our purpose is to provide quality activities in a fun atmosphere and develop each player’s potential to the fullest,” said Sharon Barlow, Director. Sherrill and Shannon (recently married) worked this ride hard in 2019 to make sure it is a great day for the bikers and everyone involved. We had a nice ride and there were several hat a pretty day and great turnout for the

activities at the end. No dead time waiting around to see who won. Starting with free BBQ sandwiches, soda and water. Frosty adult beverages were available. DJ Mark kept us entertained and dancing once in a while. Yes, I can Wobble. There were door prizes and auctions. The local dune buggy guys showed up with more than a dozen cool old buggies. They were a big hit giving rides around the midway. The Walkin’ Roll Dice Run is sort of an Old Hickory Bikers Reunion, too. Sherrill is well known in the area for many

years. Some of us from the Old HOG Chapter were there with t-shirts from when it was Foothills H-D for our own reunion. High Roll was won by Charley Huffman and Dawn Barden had the lowest score. “It was a great day and great turn out of bikers to support Walkin’ Roll,” Sherrill said. “This was probably our best turn out of riders. And definitely the best Walkin’ Roll event ever since it ran so smoothly.” “There are lots of folks to thank for making Walkin’ Roll such a success,” Sherrill said. “Thanks to all the volunteers and riders who made the ride happen. Special thanks to Mike Johnson Toyota, a major sponsor. Also special thanks to Dennis Hefner of Specialty Welding. And a big thanks to Rayburn Smith. Others who helped a bunch in raising that $26,000 were James and Toni Johnson, VFW Post 5305, Lonnie Bollinger and The Maintenance Company.” For more information on the Activities League, how to participate in their events and assist with the Activities Center visit www.walkinroll.org.

We Ride So Children Can Walk

By: Karen Hatchet he 9th Annual Shriners Children’s Hospital Ride and Benefit was held on Saturday August 17th at Double D Burnout Saloon in Kernersville. With over 65 bikes riding to JR’s Corner Tavern in Jamestown and then to the Ole Watering Hole in Walburg, we managed to dodge the rain and enjoy a safe fun ride. We all rode back to Double D, where we were welcomed by great live music by CrossRoads Band and some great BBQ, chicken and sides prepared by Butch and Carol Medders, Jack and Dawn Reeves, Gary Cox, and David Ellington. A shower came just in and lasted just long enough to cool everyone down. There were many auction and raffle items, with the largest being a custom built golf cart donated by Bobby’s Golf Cart Repair owned by Bobby and Missie Ellis, who both put their blood, sweat, tears and heart into the build.

T

Raffle ticket sales for the golf cart alone brought in $8,180 for the children. Congratulations to the winners, Karl and Michelle Jones. We hope you enjoy your new ride. After all was said and done, $18,000 was raised for the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, SC, where my son, Blake Hall, was a patient for 18 years. The Shriners provided orthopedic and prosthetic care to Blake at no cost to our family. Not only did the Shriners Hospital help with his physical needs, they also helped with day to day living with limb deficiencies. A BIG “Thank You” to all who came out to support this great cause. Special thanks to: Dave and Missie Thompson for hosting this benefit; Niki Mickey, and Kandi Bise for serving up all the drinks; Carol Medders, Jill Stephens, Kim Gommell and all others for serving up some great food, Samantha Winslow and Roslyn Voliva for selling raffle tickets, Cindy

Welborn, Crista Haglund and Brenda Micheals for handling registration and the dice roll, Scott Hatchett for leading the ride, Lloyd Luquer and Rose Goins for taking lots of great photos, and all the corporate sponsors and participates who helped to raise funds to help the children. It takes a Village and I can say that we have one helluva tribe! Watch The Carolinas’ Full throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for information on the 10th Annual Benefit and Ride. It promises to be a fun time with great music and food for all. We Ride So Children Can Walk! If you know of any child under the age of 18 needing orthopedic or burn care, please contact your local Shrine Club. Medical care is provided at no cost to the family.

Gaston County CBA Toy Run For Kids Breakfast Fundraiser

By: Wally Wersching n Saturday, September 14th, there was a breakfast fundraiser for the Gaston County CBA Toy Run For Kids. The toy run is one of the biggest in the area every year. The breakfast helps raise money to either buy toys or to give to the needy children of Gaston County. I was looking for someplace to go on Saturday and found this notification on a few Facebook pages. It sounded like fun for a good cause, so I decided to go. I left home about 8 a.m. The event was held at Gastonia Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram. I was surprised to see a car dealership donate their showroom for a biker event. I rode around the parking lot getting closer to the main building until I saw other bikes parked. I parked “Miss Vickie” alongside a few Harleys, and then walked toward the smell of cooking bacon, eggs, and sausage. There weren’t many bikes, but the place was crowded. Maybe it was the threat of rain in the dark clouds overhead. Many people drove their cars and trucks to the breakfast. I took a stack of “The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines” out of my pack and walked inside the showroom to make the $6 donation for breakfast. I placed the magazines on the registration table and followed the line to get the food. There were

O

many young ladies handing out the eggs, bacon, sausage, and grits. I had a full plate by the time I stopped for a glass of tea at the end of the line. The next thing I had to do was find a place to sit. The tables were almost completely full. I walked around, and found a single place, and asked if it was saved for someone. The answer was that it was saved for me (even though I had never met any of the people before). I sat next to members of Carolina Thun-

der. They are a very friendly group. The man I was sitting next to, “Red”, gave me the address of their clubhouse, and invited me to visit anytime. After eating the delicious food, I started to walk around again to see if I knew anybody. That’s when I saw “Cuzz” from the Gastonia Chapter of the Guardians of the Children(GOC) and his friend. They hammed it up for the camera, so I had to take their picture. I walked outside to watch the cooks cooking all the delicious food. The flyer said that the cooking would be done by “World Famous Katdaddy” and Carolina Thunder. As I watched, they were all

25

doing their best to prepare the food and keep the line inside fully stocked. Sitting on a trailer outside was a 2005 HD Sportster 1200Custom. It was being raffled off to benefit the toy run. It was a nice, clean looking bike. I remember winning a 2005 Sportster 883 and putting almost 70,000 miles on it before buying “Miss Vickie”. They are very durable bikes. I think that 2005 was the last year of the carburetor. 2006 models had fuel injection. They are going to draw the winning ticket at the Toy Run on December 7, 2019. As I walked around again, I noticed that there were many different bike clubs represented. They were all there for one reason besides getting a delicious breakfast – to raise money for the Toy Run so that children will have a pleasant Christmas. As I was getting ready to leave, I saw a few old friends from the Dixie Drifters pull in. They drove their cars because they brought their families. It was good to talk with them before they went inside, and then I left. I was glad that I went. It was good to visit with friends old and new, support a good cause, and enjoy a delicious breakfast.

Look Twice Save A Life Poker Run By: David Burnette Photos By: Rick Hackley August 24, 2019 was the date of the first annual Look Twice Save a Life Poker Run in memory of Ernie (Gampy) Carraway. Everything started out at Iron Horse Motorcycles in Monroe, NC that morning with overcast skies threatening rain all around. But that didn’t stop the crowd of bikers that rolled in to pay respect to the memory of a good man who lost his life way too young due to an accident on his bike involving a horse trailer. In spite of the weather, the run was successful making stops at Creekside Grill & Ale, Frogs Bar & Grill, The Handlebar Tavern, and ending at the Easy Parrot where there was a huge smoker out back where they were serving up some awesome BBQ. There were cash prizes for best and worst poker hands, lots of door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. I believe the 50/50 pot was over $700 to the winner who turned around and donated every bit of the money back. All the proceeds raised went to the Hometown Heroes Organization of Monroe. Ernie was only 59 years old when this happened. He left behind his wife Wanda and their children and grandchildren that loved him very much and are missing him still to this day, struggling with the loss, wishing he was still here. I know that this didn’t happen on purpose. It was an accident, but it didn’t have to happen at all. It seems like today everyone is in such a hurry to get to where they are going that they tend to take too many chances not taking time to take the right precautions necessary to ensure that they’re not going to hurt anyone. Not taking that extra moment to look twice or double checking that blind spot or maybe even having an extra

person watching for us while backing into the road; things like that, and by all means getting off of those cell phones and paying attention. There is way too much distracted driving going on out on the road these days. I’ve seen more people driving all over the road while trying to text and drive. In my opinion that’s become more rampant than drunk driving. You know, we’re not just some old biker trash. To someone, we might be their whole world; a spouse or a father, definitely someone’s child. As I was doing research for this article, I went on to Ernie’s Facebook page and began reading about all the hurt and pain that his friends and family have been through over the last year dealing with his death. It just broke my heart and made me begin to think about my own driving habits because I would never want to be responsible for that kind of destruction in someone’s life. So how about we all make a commitment to

be more aware of our surroundings while driving and maybe even be a little more courteous to others that we share the road with? From what I could gather from Ernie’s FB page he was a Godly man who loved his family and believed in living life to its fullest, willing to forgive, not ashamed to admit when he was wrong, treating others the same way he wanted to be treated and love like Jesus did. I’m sure if Ernie could give us one piece of advice from above, he would want everyone to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior today because tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone. Although I didn’t know Ernie here on earth, I’m sure we’ll meet up in Heaven one day. Rest In Peace, Brother. God bless y’all. Go home and hug your loved ones and hold them close while you can because you never know what tomorrow will bring. Remember: Look Twice Save a Life it just might be someone you know! God Bless;)

Suzie’s Ride

By: Rose and Lloyd n Saturday, Sept. 7th The American Legion Post 87, hosted a ride for Susan Stilley to help pay medical bills. Many of you know Susan, a beautiful woman in the best years of her life. This sweet ,loving, amazing woman. is always around helping others, if not with her significant other, Tim Woods, doing Karaoke. Unfortunately, Suzie has struggled with serious health issues for many years. She has been battling lung problems for 19 years and has been on oxygen since 2005, Due to a brain tumor in in May of 2012, her left lung became paralyzed. Now she has to wear a compression belt many hours a day to keep her lungs functioning. This belt was $12000.00! Insurance paid some, but she is making payments on the remaining $4000.00. Additionally, she is also responsible for the cost of her everyday medication. The ride was to help raise money for these necessities. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always have a silver lining. Without, proper help and medication, Suzie’s tree of life is just a little sprout trying to grow, into a tall oak. Many people conspired to put this ride together in just one month, Tony, “Mad Dog” King, Wayne Hill. And others that made food and got donations for a fabulous raffle, and auction. The ride left American Legion Post 87 in High Point, rode to Buddy’s Place in Peasant Garden and back to High Point for a stop at JR’s Corner Tavern. Then back to Post 87 for fun,

O

food and music from Dexter Jackson. It was a beautiful ride on a beautiful day. From the array of food donated, to the great crowd of bikers and friends it was apparent that a lot of love was shown, The benefit turned out well considering they only had one month’s planning, but Suzie still needs our help. We all want to watch her oak grow, and life to be more comfortable for this beautiful person. If you were unable to attend and would like to help, please send a check to American Legion Post 87 409 W High Ave, High Point, NC 27260. Mark it for Susan Stilley.

Emergency Benefit Ride

By: Lincoln ifty-three bikes showed up with a week’s notice of the Emergency Ride creation. It’s just proof of how tight the biker community is when one of their own is in need. Charlene passed away suddenly and her family needed a little help to take care of final expenses and other things. It was a truly beautiful day to take a ride and when I got to the HideA-Way Tavern in Rockingham the lot was already a sea of chrome. It’s always cool to see folks come together to support their friends.

After every one signed in, one of the independent riders gave us the quick scoop on the ride. We took a group picture to commemorate the occasion and then saddled up. Once everyone got a couple of twists of the wick to make sure their machine was running good, the group took off and headed up

the road. They were going out the back way and heading up to Dave’s Place in Aberdeen to continue the party for a bit. At Dave’s Place, the riders were met with pizza, chicken wings, and of course, cold drinks. I mean, what else could you want? After a bit, the party hit the road and headed back to The Hide-A-Way Tavern to finish off the day. There were door prizes, auction items and a 50/50. The 50/50 split was $260, and the winner did the right thing and donated it back to the cause. The day garnered around $2,500 to help Charlene’s family. Not bad for just a few days to gather a crowd. To me, it really demonstrates the loyalty of this community. Any day is a great day to lend a hand to a friend in need, The bonus was that it was a great day to ride as well.

Night Owl Dice Run For Adam Story and photo by: Rebecca Gwyn he Maniax RC of Catawba County, NC, beat the heat on Saturday, August 31st with a night ride. We did the Night Owl Dice Run to help support Adam Hoffman, who was diagnosed with a very rare form of leukemia in April 2019. Only a small number of similar cases exist in the U.S. Adam is on a trial treatment because they don’t know exactly how to treat him since the type of leukemia, he has is rare. He started a three week in the hospital, one week home treatment almost three weeks before the run. Luckily by God’s grace and Adam’s strong will, he was home the day before the run. We started the evening not knowing what the day was gonna turn out to be because it was an evening ride and with other rides starting that morning, we didn’t know how many would turn out. The club was surprised and happy with nearly 100 bikes turning out for a nice ride. Everyone ended back up at the Maniax clubhouse where we enjoyed a meal and finished up activities and an auction. Once we had things wrapped up at the clubhouse, everyone was invited to ride to Adam’s and present him with his surprise. About 40 bikes went to Adam’s house that night. We blocked off the whole road in front of the house. Neighbors and other family were there, too. The Maniax presented Adam with a check for $5,739.00 and a Maniax honorary member vest. It was a pleasure to do this for him. Just to see the smile on Adam’s face was all worth it. One of Adam’s family asked for us to light them up and

T

wake the neighborhood. So, one of the Maniax, Terry Hefner, obliged and burned rubber and smoked up the neighborhood. Also, one of the neighbors, Tommy Dobritz, saw all the bikes, dropped in and donated $100.00 as well. It was a wonderful night. One of those you just feel with the heart! Sometimes you can just see appreciation in the smile on a person’s face! And those mean the most! We would also like to thank Adam’s Army page on Facebook for helping us spread the word about the event. And all of our sponsors and donors – Thanks for all the help!

2nd Annual NC Troopers Ride As One By: Jase Bryant n September 7th, 432 motorcycle riders flooded to Shelton’s Harley-Davidson which is located at the Carolina Premium Outlets in Smithfield, NC to show support for the NC Troopers Association Caisson Unit (NCTA). This is a volunteer unit formed to honor fallen (on and off duty) first responders including state troopers, firefighters, and EMS personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice while providing safety and care to their communities. The ride went from Shelton’s HD to the Wayne County fairgrounds. It was estimated the length of the riders was approximately 2 miles long at points. Once the riders started to arrive it took approximately 15 minutes to get everyone into the fairgrounds and the

O

parking area. This was their biggest turnout so far. Shelton’s Harley-Davidson donated a 2020 Street Glide which was raffled off. Bobby Reavis of Goldsboro won it, but decided to take the 22k instead. Food from Parker’s BBQ in Wilson was made available for purchase (if you were a rider it was included in the entry fee) To see the caisson or for more information about the NCTA unit you can visit: https://www.NCTACaisson.org/

10th Annual Knobbies “Ride The Blue Ridge” By: Wally Wersching n Friday, September 13th to Sunday the 17th, the Knob Mountain Motorcycle Club held their 10th Annual “Ride The Blue Ridge” Rally at the Catawba Meadows Park in Morganton, NC. All proceeds go to the Children’s Advocacy Center of South Mountain Children and Family Services, which has been around since 1903, and has evolved to keep up with the needs of the area children. The center has become known as an innovator of quality programs by creating the State’s only “Foster Community” which improves the quality of life for children in care by providing the positive aspects of group care in a traditional family foster care setting. The “Knobbies” are a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who meet every Sunday morning at about 8am at the Timberwood Restaurant in Morganton, and then go for a day-long ride to “who knows where”. They were originally a BMW Motorcycle Owners Club, but now they welcome all kinds of bikes to their rides. They are a friendly and warm group of individuals. The Catawba Meadows Park is an excellent facility in Morganton, NC which keeps getting better every year, too. They allow overnight camping for the event. The city of Morganton is one of the sponsors of the event. In 2010, the Knobbies started holding the “Ride The Blue Ridge” event, and it was a hit with bikers – both local, and not so local. Bikers come from up and down the east coast, the mid-west, and even Canada. The club members were amazed by the turn-out, so every year, they try to improve on last year’s event. The Knobbies rally is not like most of the normal biker rallies. There’s no loud band – there’s not even loud bikes. This year, and every year, the focus of the rally is riding scenic roads with friends – old and new. This year, they had guided “Ride Along with the Knobbies” rides that ranged from offroading to leisurely cruising down the back roads. There’s always a lunch stop along the way, and the ride ends up back at

O

the Catawba Meadows in the evening. There’s always a food vendor that provides delicious meals during the rally. Many of the participants camp at the park overnight so they can be ready early the next morning to hit the road. Some brought motorhomes and travel trailers for comfort. Others camped or stayed at local motels. I decided to ride up to visit them on Friday morning, and bring a stack of “The Carolinas’ Full Throttle” magazines for the participants. I got there at about 8:45am, and a most of the bikes were still parked next to the tents under the trees. There weren’t any lined up ready for the morning rides, yet. The weather was perfect with temperatures in the 70’s,with a chance of rain predicted for the afternoon. Even so, it was much better than last year’s event that was canceled on Friday night by the arrival of Hurricane Florence. I walked around and talked with many of the “Knobbies” along with some of the other rally goers. They were all excited to have a great weekend of riding the backroads of North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. For more info visit: www. knobbies.org I watched as they set up the raffle with the prizes they had kept from last year, because the raffle was also canceled by Florence. I had donated some of my BMWMOA memorabilia for the raffle – decks of cards, patches, stickers and a scarf that I had kept ever since I joined the Knobbies back in 1999 and figured that now it was time for somebody else to enjoy them. We had a comical floor show. One of the campers was trying to set up his tent, which he hadn’t used in a while and had a lot of difficulty setting it up. Other members also tried to help adding to the comedy of the show. They finally got it up, and we all hoped that it wouldn’t blow down with the first gust of wind. At about 10 am, I said my good-byes and left. I took the scenic way home. I got there about 11:15. Cindy and I went out for a nice lunch. It was a great way to spend a retirement morning.

Thunder In The Smokies Fall Rally 2019 By: Anchor

S

eptember6-8 was a beautiful weekend in the mountains.

One of the best things you can talk about is going to a rally in the mountains that everybody looks forward to attending That rally is Thunder In The Smokies. No matter if you go to the spring, the summer, or the fall rally, you will have a great time this fall rally was awesome and had an amazing turn out . Many many people from all over the United States showed up to party and have a good time. Early Saturday morning there is an escorted ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and it was well attended. Back at the Festival Grounds, the first event that took place on Saturday was the bike show . We saw some stock bikes and we saw some very nice customized motorcycles. The winners of the bike show were determined by the people’s choice. As you bought a ticket to come into the Festival Grounds, you also received a ticket to drop in a helmet to vote for your favorite bike. You can see the contestants in a series of shots in the photos from this event. The winners were: 1st Place was Tracy Rodgers from Pilot Mountain, NC who took home $500 cash, 2nd Place -Kim Gist from Lexington, SC and 3rd Place -Tony Helms of Monticello, KY. The bike Show was Sponsored by Cartel Baggers. This a great shop set up in Maggie Valley that sells shirts , riding equipment, and bike accessories. They have a great attitude towards everybody who comes in and they treat you like family. Now since we had the bike show going on and so many participants jumped in to claim the cash prizes, you almost forgot that there was gonna be some killer bike games taking place on the other end of the festival grounds. Now for all of those who have always attended, you know that there’s a few standard games, but sometimes Chris gets a funny hair and goes to a different place with some of the games and switches them up. Normally the things he had the guys do, he had the women do those, too, and vice versa. Things that women did, he made

1st Place was Tracy Rodgers from Pilot Mountain, NC

2nd Place -Kim Gist from Lexington, SC

3rd Place -Tony Helms of Monticello, KY the guys do, too, which made it even funnier and even more spectacular than the last time Now those pictures are on the website: FullThrottleMagazine.com. Click on “Events photos” and scroll down to the Thunder In The Smokies photos. Check them out because in a lot of these photos so many people were having fun and having a great time. I was honored to be able to cover this event. Lori and Chris were gracious hosts. I did not feel anything but welcome and helped. Now they did not just treat ME in this manner.

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

They try to make every person in attendance feel like they are important and there was a lot of people there. I would say from my best guesstimate there had to at least been 34-3500 people! Bikes were lined up row after row and, of course, everybody was showing off the newest trends of what they’ve done to their bike how they modified it. I even watched a few guys add some stuff from some of the vendors that were there to their motorcycle by the light of a lighter of just to improve their bike just that much more. The winner of the bike games was close, but your winners of the bike games were:1st Place -Brian Hamrick & Shawn Padgett, 2nd Place -Roger and Jennifer Smith, 3rd Place -Mike Shramek & Heather. The American Legion in Maggie Valley helps a lot of veterans in the Maggie region and they help by raising money to help their vets. They held a 50/50 drawing and Wayne was the winner. He won $300. On Friday and Saturday, there were some great bands keeping it alive into the night. Now for a true highlight. I got to meet a special family that attended the event. Christa & Amelia Gilliam were guests of honor. The daughter loved motorcycles so much that her mom went out, took some classes, got her license, and bought a Can-Am Spyder and started taking Amelia on rides to different events. Amelia is a special high functioning autistic child that amazes you with how smart, diligent and kind she is. While she was here at the rally, she touched the hearts of everybody. I wish the world were full of people that had her heart. She did

39

special things throughout the event. She handed trophies to some people. Also, in one honor she got to hand a gentleman his cuts from the Masonic lodge that was raising money for homeless veterans. I can honestly say there probably was not a dry eye when that took place. They finished the day off with “We’re gonna leave and fly away”, as Amelia would say. You can see Christa & Amelia in the pictures from this event. They are dressed up in superhero costumes. Remember, every person you talk to can create a smile or a joyful moment in someone else’s life remember this as you guys go to other events and see things taking place. The biker community is a soulful and awesome community to be involved in. We take care of each other. We call each other brother and sister because we are family! Ride safe, Be proud To be an American and God-bless!! Remember to check out the pictures and you’ll see how great of a time this was. Hope to see you next year.

Infidels MC Presents 9/11 Never Forget Run By: Chi n September 11, 2019 Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson hosted the Infidels Motorcycle Club’s 9/11 Never Forget Run. The place was packed with bikes from many MC’s and independent riders all to celebrate our nation’s resilience and to pledge that we will “Never Forget” the tragic events of 9/11. The Infidels Motorcycle Club addressed the crowd to discuss that this event happened September 11th, 2001; stating that it is most important that we never forget. Eighteen years ago, may seem like yesterday to a lot us. The reality is that 18 years is a long time. On that day our nation’s people embraced each other during this most horrific and cowardly act. 2977 Americans were murdered during this tragedy. The young Americans that are just now turning 18 and enlisting and serving in our military, for the most part, weren’t born yet, so they cannot remember this event. This is why we must remember it for them. We must be dedicated to the pres-

O

ervation of this history to prevent these treacherous acts from ever happening again on our watch, in our country. The “9/11 Never Forget Run” registration began at 6 p.m. and kickstands were up by 7 p.m. Everyone headed to Fayetteville Motor Speedway. All bikers parked in a circle with their headlights bright to mark the spot where our veteran paratroopers were scheduled to land. The performance was

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

spectacular as they descended spot-on in the middle of the circle of bikers. All the patriots present with their high beams, our flag posted, and our paratroopers gave a spectacular performance of their skills. The crowd gave an extraordinary cheer in jubilation and celebration of our great nation and our support of our armed forces. The feeling of pride and honor was radiant. The emotion and reverence that was felt during the performance cannot justifiably be put into words, but it certainly was an experience that only a true patriot of our great nation could experience. The Infidels Motorcycle Club hosted the after party at their clubhouse where the celebration of true American heroes continued throughout the evening. We remembered those fallen, both civilian and military, and “we the people” will never forget the menacing evil that was strategically planned and executed by Islamic terrorists against “our land,” “our country,” and “our home.” We will Never Forget!

Deathwish Motor Culture Bike Night & School Supply Drive

By: Lincoln Infield Photos By: Maggie Infield riday Nights are made for parties and the Deathwish Motor Culture Crew knows how to have a good time. Jeremy Lomogda, the man behind the DWMC Clothing Brand, moved the bike night from the third Thursday of the month to the third Friday to accommodate some out of town friends and to maximize possible participation. This bike night, being so close to the beginning of the school year was dedicated to raising funds and school supplies for Highland Elementary School. The weather forecast was not the best for the evening and followed a few days of heavy August thunderstorms, but when Maggie and I pulled up, the outside patio of the Wing Company on NC 87 in Cameron, NC, was lined with wet motorcycles and the jukebox was blaring. We took a stroll down the way to check out the bikes that were lined up and had to take some time to admire a beautiful red panhead. The neon lights from the bar were shining on the rain drops and just added to the coolness of that ride. We made it up on the patio and had to stop a few times along the way to catch up with a few friends we hadn’t seen since the Smokeout Rally back in June. The Deathwish Motor Culture merchandise table was setup and Dustin was holding it down

F

out there. They had all the newest Deathwish shirts, hats and swag out there to pick up. We skinnied through the packed out patio and got inside in time buy some cold drinks from Beth and Brittney behind the bar and to grab a bite with our friends Zach (ch) and Kristin (2i’s) from The Rebel Spirit. It wasn’t long before Jeremy’s wife, Joie, the purveyor of good times at the Wing Company stopped by to make sure we were being taken care of. I can’t tell you how cool these folks are, you really wouldn’t believe me. We were scarfing down some good eats when we heard the familiar sounds of the Deathwish Stunt Crew ripping up some asphalt. We made our way outside to catch Dustin and Cody ripping some wheelies and burnouts on the wet pavement. It’s an up close and personal show on the service road / driveway beside the patio, so everyone has a good view of the shenanigans. They had their fun and ended the show with a tire to tire burnout. Back inside we finished our grub while Drew made his final rounds selling raffle tickets. I threw some money out there and got a full stretch of tickets. The Deathwish Bike Nights always have some kick ass raffle prizes and you even get a couple tickets just for riding in. There were Rebel Spirit custom handlebars, Deathwish apparel, Hotrod Tattoo gift certificates, Cody Roundtree custom paint job gift certificates, bike tools and more. I missed out on some really cool prizes but came home with a cool mini ratchet set for my saddle bag tools. Lastly, Drew pulled a ticket for half the raffle ticket cash. The night was based around raising money for the Highland Elementary School, so when I won the $250, I gladly donated it back to the cause. It was my lucky night, but it was well worth it to make sure the kids were taken care of. The principal of Highland Elementary had come with some of the

school staff to participate in the evenings frivolities and got in on a few photo opportunities with the Deathwish Crew. At the end of the night, we had eaten some good grub, had some ice cold bev’s and partied with a great group of folks, not a bad Friday at all. If you are looking for a kick ass bike night, block off the third Thursday of the month and take your ass down to hang out with the Deathwish Motor Culture crew at The Wing Company in Cameron, NC. These guys not only put on a great event, they are making sure to take care of their community, too. In the meantime check out DeathwishMotorCulture.com and pick up some cool ass DW riding apparel to stay on the top of your game. If you throw in Full Throttle in the discount code section, it’ll take 10% off your total.

3rd Annual Marion Correctional Special Olympics Charity Run By: Wally Wersching n Saturday, September 21st, the Marion Correctional Institution held their 3rd Annual charity run for the North Carolina Special Olympics as part of the “Law Enforcement Torch Run” for Special Olympics. For the $20.00 registration fee, the participant got a t-shirt, a door prize ticket, and directions for a very scenic 150 mile ride that would end at the Marion Correctional Institution. The North Carolina “Law Enforcement Torch Run” for Special Olympics unites officers from law enforcement agencies, and corrections departments across the state in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics North Carolina. For nearly 40 years, members of law enforcement around the world have been the biggest supporters of Special Olympics as members of the “Law Enforcement Torch Run”. I decided to go, and left home at about 7:45a.m. It was a beautiful sunny morning but a bit chilly with temps in the lower 50’s. I was glad that I opted to wear my old Vanson leather jacket, and winter gauntlet gloves. I got chilled but didn’t get cold. As long as my hands were warm, I was comfortable. I arrived at the meeting place at about 8:45a.m. to see that I was the only motorcycle there. I was warmly greeted by the three people who were manning the registration table. I gave

O

them a stack of “The Carolinas’Full Throttle. We had a lot of time to talk before other bikers rode in. The three people all worked at the Marion Correctional Institution. They were very friendly. I remember how friendly the people of Marion were when I worked at Hubbell Premise Wire in Marion in the 1990’s. If the plant hadn’t moved to Puerto Rico, I probably would have retired from there. I really enjoyed working with the people. After a while, a couple other bikers came in and registered - then another, and after a few more minutes, another. Bikers were coming in slowly; one at a time. The young man who was responsible for the run was getting a little worried. It was getting close to the time to leave and only a few bikers showed up. Then at about 9:45a.m. a large group rode in. Then another group rode in. Now the lot was filling up fast. I was talking with some the bikers as we waited for the run to start and met a couple from Shelby who rode up for the event. Most of the bikers were riding Harleys, with a couple

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

sport bikes thrown in for variety – not another Victory, but there were two Indian motorcycles which are Miss Vickie’s cousins made by Polaris. The time to leave came and went with more bikers coming in to register. The run didn’t actually start until 10:30a.m. with a description of the ride, and then a prayer. From the parking lot, the ride went for about an hour to the Carolina Barbeque in Newland, NC for lunch. Then, on to the Walmart parking lot in Boone, NC. From Boone, the ride went onto The Blue Ridge Parkway, and stopped at Yonahlossee Overlook near the Linn Cove Viaduct. From there, it was a short way over the viaduct to the Linn Cove visitor’s center. The ride continued to the Camp Creek parking lot in Newland. The last leg of the ride went back to the Marion Correction Institution. At every stop, they had drawings for the door prizes. Luckily, they weren’t very large prizes so that they could be carried on a motorcycle, but they were quality gifts like gift cards from local businesses. The ride left as a group, but the riders could stop along the way to take pictures and stop for gas. The directions given to every rider explained where the next stop would be so they could catch up with the group. It was a very well organized event. I took pictures as the ride left the Big Lots parking lot at the start of the ride, and then headed home. I don’t like riding in a group, but next year, I might just meet the group at the stops, and ride the route by myself.

Biker Trash Nation’s Camel City Bikefest 4.0 By: Lincoln Infield Photos By: Lincoln & Maggie Infield inston-Salem has a pretty chill downtown. Eclectic storefronts keep locals and visitors busy with high end eats, art, and naturally, craft beer. There is a lot going on in Downtown Winston-Salem, but on September 7 Biker Trash Nation owned the downtown area. Liberty Street, between MLK Jr. Dr. and 7th St was the destination of Biker Trash from all over the Carolinas and beyond. Wayne Pinnix, President of Biker Trash Nation had a goal, to create an event that bikers of all creed, color, make and model could congregate at and have a good old fashioned Biker street party and with the help of First Lady, Vandee, and a host of sponsors and loyal biker trash, the dream was realized. Vendor load in was Saturday morning and just as soon as the streets were cleared, they began to fill up with chrome. It was apparent very early on in the day that this was going to be a real barn burner. The two blocks of Liberty St. were lined with vendors hawking jewelry, custom motorcycle parts, cigars, pinstiping, custom paint jobs, apparel, custom motorcycles and everything you could imagine. The 6th street intersection was the center of the promenade and was home to Radical Randy’s Baggerz and Tailz bike show and sound competition. Radical Randy is a real pro and does a hell of a job putting on a bike show. He puts on world class bike shows up and down the south east. Show bike owners are obviously aware of this and the caliber of bikes that showed up were jaw dropping. Big wheels, tail draggers, baggers, choppers and everything in between rolled in dripping with chrome and custom paint were lining the streets waiting to be judged in hopes of taking home top honors.

W

The Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group sponsored the band stage that was situated at the top of the rally area where SmasHat got the party started and set a pretty high standard for the 3 other bands going on later in the day. Jukebox Re-

vival was up next, followed by Sok Monkey all warming the stage up for National Recording Artists Eve To Adam to bring the house down. In between music sets, Lady V took the stage to kick off the Pin Up contest that has become a real staple of Camel City Bikefest. at least a dozen beauties took the stage one by one to be introduced by Wayne and give out a little information on themselves. The girls all gave fun facts about themselves and I thought it was particularly interesting that a number of the ladies had some hands on vocations like welding and mechanics, really giving the contestants worthy credentials. These ladies weren’t just putting on a show, they were living the pinup life! The judges really had a tough job this afternoon, but after careful deliberation, Sara Smith was named Ms. Camel City with Jessica Lory and Sammi Trusler bringing in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Directly after the Pinup Contest, Radical Randy started handing out the awards for the Baggerz and Tailz Bike Show. Randy does it up right and has plaques and big trophies to call out all the winners and grand champions. As mentioned before, this was no easy task as the street was lined with show bikes that came to bring home some hardware. When all was said and done Mike Meaut of Sothern Boy Baggerz took home

the best in show trophy for his wild bagger. I had shot some pictures of this bike earlier in the day and admired it’s hot orange custom paint and all the bits and pieces that made it a champion, congrats Mike!

The street were still packed with bikers and even though it was a hot day, the party showed no hesitation. it was a who’s who party and I couldn’t make it a few feet without running into another pack of friends. Honestly, I was trying to get up and down the street all day long but spent most of my time only feet from the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine tent shooting the shit with friends as they passed by. I did

get a chance to stop in and talk to Ray Spencer of Universal Customs who was laying down some sweet pinstripes on a black sporty, He was next door to world class painter Jody Goodwill of SRM Paintworks who has had his artwork propel some awesome builds to even higher fame. Custom bike builders like Back Yard Baggerz and Twin City Customs were on hand with some eye candy on display. Smokin’ Harley-Davidson is a big sponsor of the Camel City Bikefest and they had a double tent set up doing some giveaways and showing off the newly unveiled Harley-Davidson Iron-e electric bicycles. It’s always good to stop in and see Brother Bill and his crew working the Smokin’ tent. Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group (The Firm The Rides) was set up and manned by Tyler Styles his wife Bailey and the McGrath Law crew. Zach and Kristin of The Rebel Spirit were set up as well, showing off their custom bike parts, helmet bows and foosball skills. For those who were thirsty on this hot day, you didn’t have to go far to run into a beer tub. There were also a few local bars set up to make sure that those who enjoyed liquor drinks got the hook up as well. Baggerz Saloon, Pine Tree Tavern and Double D’s were all set up taking wetting whistles from one end of the event to the other. As the day went on, Maggie and I stopped in to grab a bite Continued On Page #48

Continued From Page #47 to eat with the Rebel Spirit crew at Camel City BBQ who is also a big sponsor and sit at the center of the bike fest. Let me tell you something, they really had it going on with 2 stories of cold beer and great food. They even have an arcade to hang out in. We got done with our meal in time to rock out with Eve To Adam and bring the rally to a close. It was a really long day, but it went by so quick. The party was steady all day and I have to say that Wayne and Vandee really provided Biker Trash Nation with an epic event. There is an unbelievable amount of work that goes into coordinating and putting on events of this magnitude. Wayne and Vandee pulled off their 4th such event without a hitch and made it look easy. Wayne wanted to make sure that all his sponsors know how much he appreciated them throwing in and helping make sure that Camel City Bikefest 4.0 was a success. So cheers to: Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, Baggerz Saloon, Camel City BBQ, MW Carriers, Breaktime Billiards, Back Yard Baggers, Faceless Mayhem Productions, and Pinetree Tavern. Wayne and Vandee also gave high accolades to their friend Arnita Miles, who was instrumental in the past few Bikefests. Naturally they also wanted to thank all the Biker Trash that came out to party and make the Camel City Bikefest 4.0 a triumphant return to downtown Winston-Salem. Make sure to check out the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Crusin’ Calendar for next year’s Camel City 5.0, you do NOT want to miss out on this downtown bash!

17th Annual Catawba County Shriners Dice Run Story and photo by Alan Dockery

S

ummers go by too fast when you enjoy motorcycles.

There are so many rides and places to visit. Some may be longtime favorites and some signal that summer is winding down. I remember seventeen years ago when several of us started a local charity ride and picked the Shriners to raise some money for. What a nice early September Sunday afternoon we had for the 17th Annual Catawba County Shrine Club’s Dice Run. It was so cool to see several of the bikers there who helped start this ride. I’ve been on all of those rides for a great cause. Supporting the Oasis Shrine Temple. The ride raises money for Shriners Children’s Hospitals. The Newton, NC, Shrine Club parking lot filled with bikers as folks rolled in from the afternoon ride. While folks turned in their hands, the Shriners served all the riders and volunteers some real good BBQ and fixins. Outside DJ “Doc Hollywood” Crump entertained us. Dennis Grigg coordinated the event and said, “We had around 180 people. It was a great day thanks to all who showed up to support the 17th Annual Catawba County Shriners Dice Run and thanks to everyone that helped”. Thanks to our many advertisers and local companies that provided gift certificates and other door prizes.” The winning hands went to: Tom Bridges, of Morganton who won $500 for having the Best Hand. Regan Marie Cook,

from Hildebran was 2nd Best and took home $250 ; Marla Murphy, of Catawba took home $150 for 3rd Best; and Worst Hand was worth $100 for Bert Cantt.

were startled by a tap-tap -tapping noise coming from the misty shadows. Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones. “Holy cow, Mister,” one of them said after catching his breath, “You scared us half to death -- we thought you were a ghost! What are you doing working here so late at night?” “Those fools!” the old man grumbled. “They misspelled my name!” My wife got angry at me for kicking the dropped ice cubes under the refrigerator. But now it’s all just water under the fridge A photographer goes to a haunted castle determined to get a picture of a ghost on Halloween. The boss comes in and says, “What are you doing?” The woman replies, “I’m a jack-o-lantern.” The boss then says, “You’ve been working so much that you’ve gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off.” The man starts to follow her and the boss says, “Where do you think YOU are you going?” The man says, “I’m going home, too. I can’t work in the dark.”

Three vampires went into a bar and sat down. The barmaid came over to take their orders. “And what would you, er, gentlemen like tonight?” The first vampire said, “I’ll have a mug of blood.” The second vampire said, “I’ll have a mug of blood.” The third vampire shook his head at his companions and said, “I’ll have a glass of plasma.” The barmaid wrote down each order, went to the bar and called to the bartender, “Two bloods and a blood light”.

A ghost had been staying in a bed and breakfast hotel and when he came down for dinner, he asked the waitress, “Please can I have two eggs, one tough and one rubbery, really tough bacon and burned, fried bread?” The waitress said, “Sir, we really can’t serve that kind of horrid food here.” The ghost replied, “Well, you did yesterday!”

Two monsters went to a party. Suddenly one said to the other, “A lady just rolled her eyes at me. What should I do?” “Be a gentleman and roll them back to her.” A woman whose husband often came home drunk decided to cure him of the habit. One Halloween night, she put on a devil suit and hid behind a tree to intercept him on the way home. When her husband came by, she jumped out and stood before him with her red horns, long tail, and pitchfork. “Who are you?” he asked. “I’m the Devil!” she responded. “Well, come on home with me,” he said, “I married your sister!”

A man walks into a bar with a giraffe and asks for a shot of whiskey. The bartender asks him, “what is that thing and why’s it in my bar?” “That’s my pet,” the man replies. “He follows me everywhere and we both love a good drink.” Sighing, the bartender decides he doesn’t have time to argue the semantics of bringing animals into bars and pours two shots, sliding them in front of the man. The first shot is quickly swallowed by the man, who then moves the second in front of the giraffe. To the bartender’s surprise, the giraffe leans down, picks up the glass in his mouth, and gulps the whole shot down. “Another round,” the man says, putting a stack of money on the counter. The bartender obliges, and again the two companions down their drinks. This continues several times over, until both man and giraffe look well and truly sloshed. Finally, the man gets up, places a tip on the counter, then stumbles off of his stool towards the exit. The giraffe attempts to follow, but simply collapses unconscious on the floor. “Hey!” the bartender shouts before the man can leave. “You can’t just leave that lyin’ there!” “That’s not a lion,” the man slurs back, “that’s a giraffe.”

A guy stuck his head into a barbershop and asked, “How long before I can get a haircut?” The barber looked around the shop full of customers and said, “About 2 hours.” The guy left. A few days later the same guy stuck his head in the door and asked, “How long before I can get a haircut?” The barber looked around at the shop and said, “About 3 hours.” The guy left. A week later, the same guy stuck his head in the shop and asked, ‘How long before I can get a haircut?’ The barber looked around the shop and said, “About an hour and a half”. The guy left. The barber turned to his friend and said, “Hey, Bob, do me a favor. Follow that guy and see where he goes. He keeps asking how long he has to wait for a haircut, but then he doesn’t ever come back.” A little while later Bob returned to the shop laughing hysterically. The barber asked, “So, where does that guy go when he leaves?” Bob looked up, wiped the tears from his eyes and said, “Your house!” Got home to find my wife had left a note on the fridge that said “This isn’t working I’m going to my mom’s” I opened up the fridge. The light was on and the beer was cold. I’m not sure what she was talking about.

11th Annual Jace Man Run By: Wally Wersching n August of 2007, Wendy Panther’s five month old nephew Jace, fell victim to abuse, and lost his life. Because of this, Wendy and her husband Spanky created the Jace Man Run to raise money for the Abuse Prevention Council (APC). Tragically on Sept. 7, 2012, at only 51 years of age, Wendy suddenly died from an accident at home. She loved children, and put her heart and soul into raising money to put an end to child abuse. This year’s Jace Man Run was lovingly dedicated in her memory. I read about the two-day event in the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. On Friday, August 30th and Saturday August 31st, The Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) and the Concerned Bikers Association CBA/A.B.A.T.E. of Cleveland County sponsored the 11th Annual Jace Man Run at CCIB’s Land in Mooresboro, NC. All proceeds will go to the Abuse Prevention Council (APC) to help stop child abuse in Cleveland County. This year’s Jace Man Run was bigger than ever with live music, The Ricker Pickers on Friday night, and Skyndeep on Saturday night. The Poker Run was on Saturday with groups leaving the CCIB Land at 10:00am and 11:00am. Individuals could start the run at any time with the last bike due back in by 2:00pm. The stops on the run were: 1st The VFW Post in Shelby, 2nd Metrolina Motorsports in Kings Mountain, NC,

3rd - The Windjammers’ club house in Shelby, 4th - The CCIB clubhouse in Shelby, and 5th the last card back at CCIB’s Land in Mooresboro. Starting at 3:00pm they had a live auction, 50/50 drawing, bike games, door prizes, food, and more. I arrived a little after 9:00AM, and was the first bike there. After a while, Grumpy rode in on his Harley FXR. Members of the CCIB were walking around, and driving their golf carts around getting ready for the arrival of bikers to their event. The weather was perfect, and the event was advertised well in advance, so they expected a large crowd to attend. We talked for a long time while we were waiting for the other bikers to ride in. We were getting a little worried because it was getting close to 10:am, and there were only a few bikers signed up for the run. You never know who will show up especially on a holiday weekend like Labor Day. Then a large group of bikers from many of the local biker ministries rode in. They were all talking and laughing as they signed their waiver sheets. Then they walked to the tent to get their sheets to record their winning hand. I talked with a few friends, but we didn’t have a lot of time to talk because everybody was getting ready to leave on the run. They lined up to go as a group. The chrome and paint on the motorcycles were gleaming in the morning sun and within a minute or two, the morning silence turned into a mighty roar of the bikes’ exhaust. In a cloud of dust, they were all off on their way to the first stop. Overall, there were over a hundred who participated in the actual Jace Man Run but, there were many more who contributed. It was a team effort of everybody working together that made it what it was. $17,591.00 was collected to be donated to the APC this year. They are already planning a bigger and better 12th Annual Jace Man Run in 2020 Look for the dates in the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. It’s for a great cause. I’ll be there and you should be, too. I left after the 10am group rode out. On the way home I took the backroads through Mooresboro and made it home before noon.

Tii Tharpe Defends NHRA Championship By: Alan Dockery ’all know for decades the baddest nitromethane fueled Harley drag bikes come from the Carolinas. Jay Turner’s awesome shop in Julian, NC, has produced winners across all the racing associations. Now Tii Tharpe, East Bend, NC, has taken the National Hot Rod Association Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Top Fuel Harley Championship for 2019. Tii was also the 2018 champ. The season eventually got down to Tii and his close rival from 2018, Doug Vancil, a former racer from New Mexico who had returned to Top Fuel Harley racing. Doug runs a top level team with major sponsors and one of the best builders and tuners, Mike Romine. But a couple rounds into the U.S. Nationals at Indy and Tii had the title locked. “We won Topeka, Bristol and Epping with ‘Lagertha’ this year,” Tii said. “I went to the finals or lost first round at every race. Bristol is always special because it’s close, we have local fan support, and it’s Father’s Day.” “I want to thank Spevco Inc., Samson Exhaust, Jay Turner Racing and crew, Lucas Oil, Mickey Thompson Tire, AB&H Excavating, and Quick Way trucking for all the support.” All

the racers and fans thank Mickey Thompson Wheels and Tires for sponsoring the Top Fuel Harley Series. Oh, for y’all with a pile of cash and steel nerves, “Lagertha” the winning Top Fuel Harley race bike is for sale.” Tii has been drag racing for decades. I first saw Tii roaring down the Rockingham Dragway soon after I retired from the service and returned to Carolina. They had some big Harley drags at The Rock in those days. He was part of the Wood Pile group, racing with Scot Wood and that crew. His dad, Marty Tharpe, bought the All Harley Drag Racing Association in 1997. Craig Tharpe is his uncle and got into the drag racing and ran it for many years. By 2000 Tii progressed into Pro Dragster, the carbureted, small engine nitro bikes. At the end of the year banquet, Weasel and Johnny Cool asked Tii to ride the Pro Fuel bike. Then he really got his feet wet in nitromethane. Now he has several NHRA Wallys and a championship. Tii is president of SPEVCO, Special Vehicles Company, which manufactures and operates a lot of equipment you have seen in many places. They make the hospitality trailers you see at races. Yeah, those portable, two-level bars you hang out at. When you are checking out a company’s display or buying souvenirs you are probably leaning on their work. They build special equipment for government and medical and other uses. Y’all want to see Top Fuel Harleys and many other classes of Harley drag bikes, then join the thousands of fans who will be camped at and loving the American Motorcycle Racing Association’s 28th Annual Jim McClure All Harley Nitro World Finals, featuring the Ray Price Top Fuel Challenge at Rockingham Dragway October 11 – 13.

11th Annual Oconee County SC Vet-Fest 2019

By: Bill Gallaway aturday August 17th was the date for the 11th Annual VetFest. This year’s event honored Elaine White 1948 – 2019, Elaine was the wife of George A. White, past Commander of VFW Post 6830 in Walhalla, SC. The attendance was lighter this year due to the extreme weather. It was sunny and extremely hot with temps in the high 90’s. The Vet-Fest is held annually to help support Patriots’ Hall, the Military Museum in Walhalla, SC. All U.S. Veterans are honored during the event and there is always a lot of camaraderie among the participants. I arrived at Patriots Hall at 1 pm. The Antique and Orphan car and motorcycle show was already underway. The volunteers had already put out the signs to help attendees find their way to the Museum. There wasn’t a bike run this year so there were no stops to handle. This year, since I wasn’t working any

S

of stops, I got to hang around, take pictures, and participate in the scavenger hunt run and visit the local museums. In addition to Patriot’s Hall, This area has 2 additional museums. There is the Museum of the Cherokee directly across the street and just down the block is the Oconee County History Museum.

This year, there was also a Blood Drive in conjunction with the event. The Blood donors received a Walmart gift card and a T-Shirt of their choice. There was only one motorcycle signed up for the bike show, so judging was easy. However, there were a number of cars for the Antique and Orphan car show. After visiting the museums and viewing the Antique cars, I didn’t make it back for the Vet-Fest ceremony that started at 5pm at the Walhalla VFW Post 6830 where there was food available and music by a local band called “Dixie Detour” out of Easley, SC, which I heard was very good. There was also a live and silent auction as well as door prizes. Most everyone walked away with a prize of some sort, but the real awards went to the Veterans. As always, a good time was had by all. Participants were recognized at the VFW Post 6830 in Walhalla, SC, which honors our Veterans on a daily basis. Thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers. Watch for next year’s event as they are a little different every year

Fall CMA Diaper Run By: Wally Wersching n Saturday, September 7th, I was invited to participate in the “Warriors For Christ” chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association’s (CMA) Diaper Run in Gaffney, SC. I went on a few of their Diaper Runs in the past, and thoroughly enjoyed them. I met some old friends, and made a few new ones, too. The group was to meet at the Pilot gas station in Gaffney at about 10:30am. The kickstands would be up at 11:00am for the short ride to the Cherokee Pregnancy Center in Gaffney, SC there also was a mention of a fifty mile ride afterwards, and a lunch stop. It was cool in the 70’s and comfortable for an early September morning. The sky was clear with bright sunshine. I left home about 9:45am. It took about a half hour to get to the gas station. I took the back roads because they’re more fun. I really enjoyed the cool ride. When I arrived, I parked “Miss Vickie” in the shade next to “Mongoose’s” Indian “Dark Horse”. I hadn’t seen him for a while. It was good to catch up on what has been happening with him. There were other bikers parked in the shade, too. I shared some Carolinas Full Throttle magazines with them. More and more bikers rode in, and parked. Some went inside to get breakfast, but most just stood around sharing their adventures. Most were members of the CMA from chapters in the area but there were also people from other biker ministries, and there were a few like me that were not affiliated with any organization. Some of the bikes had diaper boxes strapped on the back which looked unusual. The brightly colored diaper boxes stood out against the biker image. After a few minutes, a large group of bikes roared in, and parked. As the bikers got off their bikes, many were greeted by old friends with handshakes, and hugs. One in the group was Ken Ivey, the leader of the Colossians 3:2 Riders from Union, SC. They put on a great Veterans Ride earlier this year. We talked and they are planning a better one for next year. Later, Roger, an old friend, and member of the “Warriors For Christ” chapter arrived. His wife, Carolyn, was riding her trike. It was the first time she had ridden in an event in over a year and a half. She hurt her ankle at work, and it finally healed. I was glad to see her walking instead of hobbling around wearing her special boot. We were then asked to join around for the prayer - after which, the road captain took over, and described the route we would take to the center. It was only a few miles to the center. I stayed at the rear of the group because I don’t like riding with a lot of people I don’t know.

O

Within a few minutes we were rolling into the lot at the Cherokee Pregnancy Center . After we all parked, we were invited to bring the diapers into the building. One lady was holding the door welcoming us while a young man who was a member of the board guided us into a large room where we put our diapers on the large table. When we were through, the table was full of diapers, and other things a baby might need. Many of the bikers just donated money because it can be difficult to carry large boxes of diapers on a bike. Also, this way the center can purchase exactly what the babies and mothers need. The lady and young man thanked us again and again for everything. They herded us all behind the table for a group picture. There were too many of us for a close up photo taken with a cell phone so the young man climbed the bookcase so he could get us all in the shot. It gave all of us a very warm feeling to be able to help babies, and their mothers. We all prayed for the mothers, and the lady and young man prayed for us. It was a very moving moment. We went back to the bikes where they held a bike blessing for anyone who wanted it. Many of the bike owners appreciated the blessing. Then the group rode to Union, SC for lunch. After saying good-bye, I headed back home. When I arrived, I talked Cindy into going out for lunch. It was a great way to enjoy a Saturday morning – riding my motorcycle and helping less fortunate people.

Do You Believe In God?

ith all the rain and storms going on makes us think of

back in Noah’s day when the earth was destroyed. Makes you wonder why the Lord lets all the wickedness and killing go on, but you know there will be a time just like in Noah’s day, the Lord will say “enough is enough, go get my people.” People walk around today just like in Noah’s time thinking they’re OK. They laugh and make fun of people when they talk about God. Genesis 6: 5: “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6: And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7: So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them”. God told Noah to build an ark because he was going to destroy the earth, because of all the evil that was going on. Noah tried to warn the people of God’s plan, but they wouldn’t listen. It’s the same today. People don’t want to listen when someone tries to tell them about God. Some just laugh and make fun of them. People walk around thinking they’re OK, but if you’re not born again and saved and living for the Lord, you’re just as

lost as the people walking around making fun of God. 2 Peter 3: 10: “But the day will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat, both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up”. We all just need to be ready whenever the Lord decides to come back. No one knows the time of day, the hour, month or year not even the Angels in Heaven or even Jesus know when the Lord will say “enough is enough go get my children”. Say the Biker’s Prayer and live for God and you’ll know you’ll spend eternity in Heaven. In His Wind, Ms. Pat

Twin Rivers Chopper Campout By: Lincoln Maggie and I had been planning a motorcycle camping trip for a bit when we stumbled upon the Twin Rivers Chopper Campout. It was literally the weekend we were planning on going on an aimless wander looking for a great place to pitch a tent. So we hollered at our friends Zach and Kristin of the Rebel Spirit who were planning on heading up to TRCC and made a plan to hook up when we made it up there. Most days it’s about the ride or the destination but this weekend it was both. The Twin Rivers Campground is up in Crumpler, NC, so we were able to rip up some great mountain roads on the way. It was a beautiful ride and we dodged all the rain showers on the way up. It was almost a shame when we made it to the campgrounds, but we were ready get together with our friends and start the party. The road into the primitive campground went from ok to sketchy pretty quickly with some cobble stone size gravel. Don’t get me wrong, we got in and out without incident, but it definitely made your cheeks tighten up till you got in the clear. But hey, that just adds to the adventure of the weekend. Zach and Kristin saved us a spot in campground number 4 (FR) and it was declared to be the FullRebel HQ for the weekend. Celebratory

beers were cracked open which helped with tent pitching and a few good laughs. By the way, if you are ever missing a tent stake, you are most likely gonna be laying on top of it later on. Turns out it’s a small world and as bikes rode by our campsite, we realized we knew good handful of folks in attendance. We got a few words in with Panhead Jim, Snail, Danger-Ranger, SRM Paintworks’ Jody Goodwill and Carly Dukes Goodwill and ran into others that would soon be our amigos. The cool part of this get together is that there wasn’t any schedule, planned events or any other restrictions. It was all about getting together with other riders and hanging out. Go

ride awesome mountain twisties, hang out in the river, or in the campground, whatever you wanted as long as you were talking shit and having a good time. The primitive campground was just wide enough for camp spots on either side of the road with the New River as the border on the far side. Just up from the FullRebel campsite, the campground opened up a bit and was the Twin Rivers Chopper Campout epicenter. This is where the DJ was set up and where the raffle prizes were on display for Saturday night’s drawings. There were some string lights and campfire circles to make it

inviting. We grabbed some cool TRCC shirts and other goodies from Gorgeous George’s set up. The rest of Friday night we just hung out around the fire and talked about all the cool choppers running up and down the road in the campground. Saturday morning came pretty quickly and we decided to enjoy some of the killer mountain roads in the area while in search of breakfast and camping supplies. Jody and Carly led a group on a ride to a skate park in Sparta to have a skate session and others still just kept the campground party going. The river is mostly knee deep in front of the primitive camping section and a rock island was the popular party spot. We spent

65

a couple hours in the afternoon hanging out on “Dude Island” getting the pre-evening party going. It was a great afternoon in pure chopper campout fashion. We even had a 20 minute rain storm that didn’t slow anything down. It made a little mud, but the party went on without hesitation. The only event on the schedule was the raffle drawings on Saturday evening. There were a bunch of killer prizes from Lowbrow Customs, Get Lowered Customs, Prism Supply Co., The Rebel Spirit, Custom Destruction, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, and a lot more. There were some big ticket items up for grabs like a weld on Sportster hardtail from Lowbrow Customs, some sweet rabbit ear handlebars from Mama Tried Customs and a killer custom springer from Michael Swaihart. Maggie came away with an awesome helmet built by Custom Destruction. After the raffle prizes were pulled the common area went back to party central and individual camp site parties ensued as well. The DJ kept the music going into the night and we all put the last hours of the day to good use. Sunday morning was basically a mass exodus. We packed up our gear and got on the road as well. I can tell you this much about the Twin Rivers Chopper Campout, it was one of my favorite events of the year. This is exactly the way it’s supposed to be in my humble opinion. No hefty price tag to have “fun,” no exotic schedule of events, just a get together for those who love and ride choppers. We already have plans to attend next year, should we be so lucky.

Dale Walksler To Be Inducted Into AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame

American Motorcycle Association Motorcycle Hall of Fame announced this week that they will add five new inductees at their annual ceremony on December 6 in Columbus, Ohio. Included in the Class of 2019 is Dale Walksler, founder and curator of Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC. Walksler’s induction to the Hall of Fame pays tribute to his lifelong passion and tireless effort to preserve and promote vintage American motorcycling. Walksler’s introduction to American motorcycling came when he bought a wrecked Harley-Davidson Servi-Car from behind a local repair shop. A few weeks later, he rode the machine out of his garage and into a lifelong love of motorcycles. After high school, he opened a motorcycle custom shop and then a Harley-Davidson dealership in 1974. During its 26 years, Dale’s Harley-Davidson of Mt. Vernon, (IL) was continually recognized as a top 100 dealer, receiving countless awards from Harley-Davidson and industry organizations alike. Over the years, Walksler continued to add to his personal collection some of the rarest and most historic American motorcycles and collectibles, eventually opening a museum to attract customers to his dealership. When he sold his dealership in 1999, he moved to Maggie Valley, NC to open Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum. Recognized worldwide for its all-American collection of vintage motorcycles and automobiles, each machine being kept in running and operating condition. The museum has hosted over a million and a half visitors during its seventeen years in North Carolina. Walksler’s legacy includes not only the museum but his own celebrated television show, “What’s In The Barn,” as well as numerous appearances on other programs such as “American Pickers,” “Chasing Classic Cars,” and “American Restoration.” The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame was started in 1998 and exists to “to honor the legends and heroes of American motorcycling and highlight their achievements and contributions to motorcycling.” Ken Ford, a member of the AMA board of directors, said, “The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2019 includes individuals who have impacted motorcycling in positive and powerful ways, as both advocates and sportsmen, leaving a lasting impression on the sport we all love. Generations of motorcyclists owe them a debt of gratitude for their accomplishments. We’re honored to recognize them this December 6 at the induction ceremony as the newest members of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.” The other four inductees for 2019 include Mark Buckner, Kurt Caselli, Ron Lechien, and Wiltz Wagner. Old Guys Fellowship Ride By: Moe Around mid-August every year a dedicated group of bikers between the ages of 40 to 86 get together for our annual ride. There are usually between 15 and 18 bikes, just enough to keep it safe . Our two fearless leaders, Gary Smith and his best friend Frank Jerrell, both in their mid 80s, lead us from Kernersville, NC into Virginia thru Floyd into the Meadows of Dan and then on a short ride down the Blue Ridge Parkway. From there we ride into Danbury, continue on to Walnut Cove, then finally back to Gary’s for a catered BBQ supper with homemade cake and ice cream.

Moe & Gary Smith Round trip is about 200 miles and roughly 8 hrs. Each person rides the bike of his choice consisting of Harleys, Cushmans, Hondas, Suzukis, a Kawasaki, and a Triumph. There’s no animosity between us, just a great time. Thanks to all for making this a memorable ride every year . Looking forward to next August. Thanks Gary and Frank

The Adventures Of Baby Co-Rider By: David Smith Who is Baby? Born on12-05-15 in the NC mountains near Sparta. She adopted me, at age 2 months. The day she moved in with me, was also the day of her 1st motorcycle ride. She loved it. Now, 3½ years later, she’s a beautiful 60-pound female collie. She has ridden in 28 states, so far from NC to NY To ND to TX to FL and everywhere in between. The longest ride was 3800 miles over 10 days. I draw cartoons of my girl, Baby, calling them The Adventures Of Baby. She is a well-known co-rider, and has attended many motorcycle events. She could be the most well-known co-rider east of the Mississippi river. On most every ride folks take her photo.

4th Annual George H. Neely Veterans Memorial Ride By: Gary Steelman peration Angel Wing sponsored the 4th Annual George H. Neely Veterans Memorial Ride on August 17th. Bootlegger Harley-Davidson of Knoxville, Tennessee was the kickoff point for the ride. There were over forty motorcycles roaring through the mountains on their way to Big Ridge State Park where the barbeque and cold refreshments were waiting. Good ole rock -n-roll music provided by the Overdrive Band and Zeke Vanderpool filled the park. Zeke is a veteran and singer songwriter supporting veterans with PTSD. Mary Millsaps started this memorial ride to honor her grandfather, George H. Neely who is a World War II veteran and hero. Mary also is founder of Operation Angel Wing, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Operation Angel Wing’s fundamental purpose is to provide alternative therapies and long term coaching for veterans and first responders and their families with Post-traumatic stress disorder. Mary is a retired civilian medic with firsthand experience with PTSD and has had incredible success treating the types of trauma that first responders and veterans experience. Mary and her husband Todd travel to wherever the need arises. Based

O

in Statesville, NC, Mary travels to Tennessee, Virginia, and throughout North and South Carolina to see and treat those who suffer from PTSD. The stigma of being diagnosed with something like PTSD often ends or dampens a career for a person. Operation Angel Wing recognizes this and helps treat individuals without an official diagnosis, thus no stigma; no overt drama for career positions. The treatment is confidential and individualized. “One Victory at a Time!” is the priority. The services provided by Operation Angel Wing are at no cost to the individual. The memorial ride for George H. Neely is held every year to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans everywhere and is used as a platform to remind everyone of the 22 + veterans who take their own lives every day. There is help through Operation Angel Wing and other organizations throughout the country. If you or someone you know needs help dealing with severe anxiety, unsociable behaviors, displaced anger, survivors’ guilt, depression, a sense of helplessness, or night terrors, there is hope and help. If in crisis reach out, Veterans Crisis hotline-1-800-273-8255 or call 911 for immediate assistance. You may contact Operation Angel Wing at 865-352-6699 or 704-929-9257. Email: Operationangelwing@gmail.com. There are several paths to get help for suicide prevention, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number is 1-800-2738255.

Emmaleigh’s Overcomers 2nd Annual Ride For Down Syndrome By: Len “3 Wheel” Montgomery hen asked, “What do you say when someone has a child with Down Syndrome?” Willie Reaves says, “Congratulations. It’s not I’m sorry. I say “congratulations”. It’s a blessing, like any other child that is born, if not more. This is maybe not the response you would expect. But when you are the parent of a wonderful child with Down Syndrome, you learn to appreciate just how special and precious they can be. While stationed at Fort Drum in upstate New York, Willie and Christina Reaves were excited for the arrival of their child. I mean, who wouldn’t be, right? But on the day Emmaleigh was born, Christina says, “They (doctor) walked into the room and say ‘Your daughter has Down Syndrome. We’ll see you in the office tomorrow.” And then they were gone. Being a military family, Christina and Willie away from their families. This was an unexpected revelation. It was an emotional experience. There were questions. It was a really hard time for their family. “We didn’t have an organization to reach out to us and say ‘Hey, you don’t have to be on this journey alone” Christina said. “When we moved here to North Carolina, we got connected to Triangle Down Syndrome Network and it has been a life changer for us.” Willie said, “Emmaleigh, in her eight years, has taught me more than I will ever be able to teach her; Compassion, love; All kinds of stuff.” “Patience” one person attending chimes in. “Yes, patience. That’s the word I was looking for. You understand.” And now, Willie, Christina and Emmaleigh are giving back. And the Legion Riders have teamed up with them to support this very worthy cause. So what is the Triangle Down Syndrome Network? Christina explains it best. “What we do is, we go into the hospital

W

when a new family gets that diagnosis, and we’re there for that family. We let them know from the beginning that they don’t have to do this journey alone. And that is the most impactful thing we can do. We advocate, but most importantly we make sure they know they don’t have to do this alone.” “I can’t tell you what this organization means to families with children with Down Syndrome,” says Willie. “The things that they do, to explain to these families, that it’s not the end of the world that you have a child with Down Syndrome. It’s the beginning of a life that’s blessed…forever.” “I really appreciate you all being here and being a part of that with us. Whether or not you’re effected with an individual with Down syndrome or not. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And we look forward to seeing you again next year” says Christina. This was a great experience for me personally. Being greeted by Emmaleigh calling out “Grandpa.” Apparently, he, too, has a long, white beard. But the love she displayed to each person she interacted with was a joy to behold. Another attendee, Thomas, a hardcore Durham Bulls fan, who also has Down Syndrome, was just as warm and loving to everyone as he proudly displayed the wood signs he makes with his father. It was easy to see Willie Reaves’ perspective that these children are indeed a blessing just as is every other child. If not more!
