eptember was a crazy month! we attended rallys in mountains, at the coast, and 2 in the center of the state. We survived the OBX during a Tropical Storm and even pulled off a bike show there! Mayhem In Midway, as I write this, is only 48 hours away, but you will read about that in the November issue. There are still a lot of great events coming up in 2023. The first week of October is Myrtle Beach Fall Rally and there is plenty to do on the Grand Strand! If you are going down, stop in and see us! We will be hangin out at The Rat Hole, Thee Doll House, Bubbas’ Bar & Grill and Fishtails Biker Retail for most of the weekend. On October 7th, we are putting on a bike show at Bubbas Bar & Grill. This will be our third bike show at Bubbas and man we have a blast. Bubbas is a 24/7/365 biker bar in Myrtle Beach and the parking lot is a sea of chrome every day of the rally. The bike show is from 12-4pm and is free to enter. We will have trophies and a $200 cash prize for best in show! Come out and party with us!
October 13-14th we will be in Denton, NC for the Antique Motorcycle Club of America Southern National Meet. If you love old motorcycles, this is the place to be. Hundreds of antique motorcycles pile in to the Denton Farm Park and vendors set out thousands of parts to rummage through. This is one of our favorite events of the year, stop by and check us out while you are there.

Check out the cover of this months magazine. The Charlotte CBA is back at it and November 11-12, 2023 is the 51st Fall Swap Meet and Bike Show. This is a true biker tradition and another must attend event. Bike Shows, Swap Meet, Live Music and Cannon fire make for a full weekend of fun. They are adding a local biker build off event to the event this fall, make sure you read up about it on page seven.
Inside this issue is a ton of great articles about the events going on in the Carolinas, but we are always looking for new places to go and new people to meet. Wanna help us out? We are looking for Sales Reps in YOUR area. Give us a call 336-885-5400 and see when you can start. It’s a fun gig and you can even make some dough while you cruise around on your motorcycle to local biker hang outs.

CBA Bike Show & Swap Meet
November 11-12
WELCOME BACK MY FRIENDS TO THE SHOW THAT NEVER ENDS, (Thank Goodness!!).
We’re so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside. And we really are glad to see ya.
You know it’s a family reunion and a family tradition.
It makes me happy to see brothers and sisters that I only get to see twice a year. Last year a friend named Buster from W Va, left me a phone message saying that he was sorry that he couldn’t get across the parking lot to speak to me. Made me feel good. You really should make an effort to see your brothers and sisters because it may be the last time you see them. Our show is an excellent place to find parts for your motorcycle whether it is a new model or an old 1950 like me.
We try to bring different events to our show for you. Even my wife said we need to bring new events to our show, because folks are tired of the same old thing, but the same old thing has kept bikers coming to our show for 52 years, so they must like it. It’s because it is a REAL swap meet with antique bike parts and not just a t-shirt show. Our shows have kept going because we have great spectators and great vendors and a great volunteer/member staff who have supported us and worked very hard to put on a great show, and we really appreciate it.
THIS SHOW WE ARE HAVING A BIKE BUILD OFF CONTEST. Our CBA VP, Dano, is in charge of it. Go to the CBA website to check the rules and regulations of the Build Off. Dano has built a killer trophy that will go to the winning shop or builder for a year. The following year there will be a tag put on the trophy naming the previous winner but the actual trophy will go to the next winner for a year. We will be having a ride in bike show again this year like last year. We will be having our regular, 2 day, inside bike show also.
We are open to any new ideas you would like to see at our show. The main thing I would like to see at our show is a lot more spectators and vendors and especially new CBA members. If you are not a CBA member or need to renew your membership, you can sign up at the show for $10 for a year. Join with us to fight for bikers rights and motorcycle safety. Some of the money from our shows goes to teach motorcycle awareness programs in our local high school drivers education classes. I am very proud of our CBA instructors who teach young drivers to be aware of motorcycles around them. I would like to thank each of our CBA instructors who volunteer their time to teach these classes.
We would like to thank our sponsors:
Carolinas’ Biker Lawyers – Bob Karney & Sean Clayton, Charlotte.
MAL Entertainment – Slim, Charlotte. (& titties all around you)
South Main Customs – Dano Simmons, Kannapolis
Blue Collar Cycle Company – Brandon McNeely, Salisbury
OK Recycling – Tim Griggs, Burlington
Ground Thunder – Bob Weeks, Charlotte
Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine – Molly, Lincoln & Maggie, Jamestown
Please support these businesses who support us and our lifestyle.
We have an all volunteer staff who work very hard to put on a great show for you. All your money stays in North Carolina and goes to fight for our rights and promote motorcycle safety. Our vendors will be open 10am to 6pm both days.
For more information check out our website. Don’t forget our CBA Toys for Tots on December 3, 2023. It will begin at the Bojangles Coliseum parking lot in Charlotte, NC and ends at Independence H-D. Register at 11am. KSU at 1pm.
Our next show will be March 23 & 24, 2024 at the Rowan County Fairgrounds.
Hope to see you at all our CBA events!
THANK YOU!!! From CBA and all of our staff. Ride Safe and Ride Free!

13th Annual Benefit For Shriners Children’s Hospital
By: Karen HatcHett
t takes a village!
The 13th Annual Benefit for Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville was a fun filled day and great success. The day started out with Wishful Thinking taking the stage providing great entertainment, and Dalton Davis Band took over the stage. And WOW! If you have not heard Dalton Davis, look him up. This guy is going places! And they have agreed to play at next year’s annual benefit.
There were raffles all day, bike show, live auction and great food. Congratulations to Missie Thompson for winning “Best Bike”, Fred Meredith, winner of Smith & Wesson 357, and Niki Thompson, winner of 2001 Harley Davidson Fatboy.
Over $15,000 was raised for the Hospital in Greenville, SC, who took care of my son for 18 years! Great job everyone who showed up and donated. The Shriners Hospital is a nonprofit organization, providing free care to children under the age of 18. Orthopedic, spinal cord injury, burns, cleft lip and palate, with no cost to the family. If you know a child in need, please contact your local Shrine Club.
Special thank you to Double D Burn Out Saloon for provid-
ing your venue and letting us take over your back yard, High Point Shrine Club for helping in anyway needed, American Legion Post #87 for the generous donation. To Idols Gun Rack, Amish Trading Post, Priscilla McCall’s, RH Barringer, Riding High Harley-Davidson and all others who donated auction and raffle items. Butch Medders, Carol Medders, Gary Cox and all their crew for cooking and serving. The BBQ, Chicken and all sides were off the chain! Our own News2 meteorologist Ed Matthews for always supporting and attending. Cindy Welborn, Andrea Huffstetler, Mark Hall, Billy Wrenn

for handling the food ticket sales and raffle sales, bike show signups and judging. And also, to Lincoln Infield and Full Throttle Magazine for putting the word out each year, your support and being the photographer for the day! Thank you to all the vendors who showed up and donated. Last but not least, Scott Hatchett who has always been the backbone, giving his all and patience each and every year, doing whatever it takes to make sure the day is a great day for everyone. Again, it takes a village, and there were so many more involved, too many to name, but thank you to each and every one for all of your support and help. This could not happen without the help and support of all involved. Until next year my friends. Be on the lookout for the date of the 14th Annual Benefit.

Benefit For Travis & Shelly
By: roB Harper and ria McKown
little over a month ago on July 12th, travis Ferguson and Shelly Pittman were doing what they enjoyed and loved so much, riding their motorcycle together near Sparta, NC. Unbeknownst to them, it would be their last ride together as they were struck head-on by a Ford Explorer that had crossed over the centerline. Tragically, neither survived the accident. A devastating loss for their community but more so for their children and family.
To raise funds for Travis and Shelly’s children, several friends organized fundraising events. The first was on August 19th at Bud’s Tavern in Youngsville, NC. This event was filled to the rim. It started off with a “Donations Only” ride to Owl’s Roost Brewing in Franklinton. After a short rider’s meeting and prayer, a group of approximately 80 bikes pulled out at 11:30am and headed north. The staff at Owl’s Roost Brewing was well prepared for the group. Cold beverages were available at both indoor and outdoor bars, and the woodfired pizza oven was ready for anybody that missed breakfast.
At 1:00pm, the signal was given to saddle up and the riders headed east to Louisburg. People mingled, talked, and enjoyed the atmosphere inside and outside. Soon it was time to leave, and we headed back to the main event at Bud’s Tavern, where a large crowd had already gathered.
When we arrived, the band Straightwire was keeping everyone entertained with awesome rock music. There was a chicken wing cookoff in progress. BBQ plates were being prepared and the kitchen was open as well. Good thing I hadn’t eaten yet. Several vendors had their wares on display, a silent auction was set up, and raffle tickets were on sale for various items including 50/50 and the grand prize, a 1997 Dyna Low Rider.
Thanks to all the friends and vendors that helped coordinate this event. It was a great success and, in the end, over $7000 was raised for Travis and Shelly’s children.
The second event is scheduled for September 16th at Locked & Loaded Bar and Grille in Garner. Between both events, the hopeful goal to raise is $10k.
Back The Blue Ride Raises $17k For Law Enforcement Christmas Programs
In Richmond, Scotland Counties
By: williaM r toler Managing editor; tHe ricHMond oBserver
egional bikers poured love from their wallets this weekend, resulting in a new record total for the annual Back the Blue Ride. The ride, which supports Shop with Cop programs in Scotland and Richmond counties, collected $17,000, according to organizer Chris Jackson. Jackson, a longtime officer with the Laurinburg Police Department, started the two-county ride in 2020 following a nationwide backlash against law enforcement.
Some of the riders started at Cross Roads Grill in Laurinburg and met with others at the Hide-A-Way Tavern north of Rockingham. From there, the convoy headed back to Scotland County, passing by all the law enforcement agencies in the two counties along the way. In all, there were 180 riders — which included motorcycles, several jeeps and other vehicles, as well as the law enforcement escorts and trucks from the Laurinburg Fire Department and Jackson’s Diesel Service.
The ride raised $700 in its first year. However, that total
has steadily increased with each subsequent ride, bringing in $12,000 in 2021 and $14,000 in 2022. Last year, the Rockingham Police Department was able to help 11 families, giving each child a $350 spending limit for its 10th annual Shop with a Cop event.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Shop with a Deputy program started in 2020. Last year, more than 30 kids each received a gift card with a $250 spending limit as deputies and other RCSO employees walked with them around Walmart and helped keep track of their purchases.
Four previous rides hosted by the Hide-A-Way this year have brought in more than $20,000 combined for the Silvertip Hunt Club’s annual veterans hunting trip, Project Taylor, Pence Place and Richmond County Special Olympics.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine
25th Anniversary Bike Night
By: lincoln infield
t’s been a long, hot summer, and that’s a good thing. In July we covered a few parking lot events, and I swore off hanging out in parking lots In August. So, on Friday, August 25th, we threw our 25th Anniversary Bike Night, in the parking lot of our office. Monday through Thursday had cooled down and the humidity was low, but that all changed for Friday and the temps went back to the mid 90’s and the humidity spiked. Perfect. The fact of the matter is that for 25 years, this family run motorcycle events magazine has operated on plan B and sometimes plan C. But whatever was thrown at us, we adjusted, learned, made our selves better and came out smelling like ethanol free 93 octane. Dad used to call it “Slaying The Dragon” and it certainly felt that way numerous times at the end of deadline, but we have, for 25 years - 302 months, produced the magazine to the best of our ability and delivered it on-time.
We have met thousands of fantastic folks who have become our brothers and sisters of the road. We’ve attended hundreds of events, taken close to a million photographs and success-
fully recorded the history of motorcycling in the Carolinas. Along the way we have had losses as well. We’ve lost friends and family along with our natural hair color and our minds. We lost Dad in July of 2021 and although we still didn’t miss a deadline, this little family business was shaken. No one admitted it, we just kept going, it was all we knew to do. It was hard to do without his knowledge and steadfast direction. But that was 24 issues ago, we’ve regained our groove, made improvements to our product and throttled through. Mom, myself, my wife, daughter and a crew of swarthy Full Throttle reps continue to put together what we think is the best motorcycle events coverage magazine in the area. So why not celebrate?
We rolled out a fresh keg of PBR along with a cooler full of ice cold Miller products, cranked some tunes up to 11 and invited all our friends to come hang out. Paul Watson/Lumbee Racing, Al’s Muscle Maintenance, FrankieJay’s sunglasses, Shaggy with CBA of NC, Ink Lab Tattoo and Village City Hotdogs were set up on the lot. The vendors had some cool stuff, but also presented some necessary shade for folks hanging out on the black top. Bikes started rolling in around 5:30 and our JoCo area rep Len “3 Wheel” Montgomery practiced the fine art of keg tapping and showed everyone he hadn’t lost his touch. It was great to see all our friends roll in to help us celebrate. There were a ton of stories told that spanned the 25 years of the magazine, a few of them embellished a bit, some of them I hadn’t thought about in years. There were a few good jokes, necessary insults and whole lot of tire kickin. I can’t tell ya’ll how much we appreciate the camaraderie. We were hanging out having a great time when mom reminded me that we had a huge 25th Anniversary cake in the office. Good plan. The AC was crankin’ and it was good to step in out of the heat and have a slice. As the sun got low, the keg started to rise out of the ice, and we refilled the
can beer cooler a couple times. It was tough keeping everyone hydrated on such a hot day.
We always throw a $50 bill at our favorite bike of the night and this year it went to Molly Scheidecker’s sweet Ironhead Sportster Chopper. No doubt it was the coolest bike on the lot. When it was fully dark, we turned on Jimi Hendrix’s version of the Star Spangled Banner as loud as it would go and shot off some celebratory fireworks. That usually signals the official end of the event, but not everyone leaves right away. We leave the music crankin while we clean up the parking lot and put away the vendor get ups. These FT bike nights usually end with a couple great burnouts and this year was no exception. We had a quadruple burnout going on the freshly pressure washed walkway in front of the office. I won’t name names and if the landlord asks, I’m gonna blame it on street vandals...you know...kids these days don’t have any respect. Again, thanks for coming out and helping us celebrate The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine’s 25 years in print. It was a great night, and we look forward to doing it again in 2048.

Motorcycles & Moonshine AHWS Brings Harley Thunder To The Mountains
By alan docKery
hen you race in wilkes county, north Cackalacky, you might smell a little alcohol in the air. Yep, some methanol in race bikes from minis to the pros. Some ethanol made from corn or apples or peaches in that jar on the table. Y’all enjoy them both.
Middle of August, Harley drag race fans came to the mountains to enjoy our cool clean air and watch bikes rip that old country drag strip. It had been a long time since there was a motorcycle drag race at Wilkesboro Dragway. The new owners ride and welcomed The All Harley World Shootout for the weekend.
Fans and racers had a nice weekend at the drag strip tucked into a mountain valley. The All Harley World Shootout is about racing and action on the strip. Friday was test and tune and grudge match racing. Bring your quick bike, maybe bet a little and have fun. Muddy Creek Revival rocked the pits.
Saturday the AHWS gets busy and is an all-day and into the night party at the drag strip for bikers. More racers and fans roll in. I was down at the end of the return road where folks were practicing launches. Even saw Paul Watson, AHWS Boss, playin with Nasty. He was too busy to race that weekend. Still needed to take a test hit.
Fans could shop vendors or walk the pits talking to race teams. Say Hey to Jerry and Jerry across from each other. Jerry the racer is one of my chopper buddies. He was racing
both a Harley Bagger and a big fast Jap Bike. Jerry Spencer was representing the Law Tigers (See their ad on the inside back cover). Johnny Vickers Hawaya Racing was there. Shucks, Johnny lives about five miles from Wilkesboro Dragway. He had a nitromethane-fueled Pro Fuel Bike there. I want to see his mountain sized motor bagger on the strip.
There was a little nitro in the air with a couple of Pro Fuel bikes match racing. Jay Beasley is a Carolina Boy riding Bobby Hoovers pretty blue machine know as Miss Haley. He lost the Pool Works $1,500 Nitro Harley Shootout to Rocky Jackson from Louisiana. Expect to see them face off at Farmington in November for the AHWS World Finals.
Y’all know I dig big motor bad ass Harley Baggers. The smell of race gas and thunder from those machines thrills some of us as much fuel bikes. There was a pretty good turnout of bikes at Wilkesboro. Lots of folks have built machines to race that class and they all need track time. Mike Beland, A1 Cycles, Maiden, NC, has a real nice looking new bike that fans want to see go quick.
As eliminations went down, it was looking like a rematch of the finals at Darlington a month earlier. Joe Gladden is part of the A1 Cycles team and a good bet to win it all. He had run a 5.55 earlier. He was facing Justin Demery on the Team Honeybun bike. Wheelies took away energy that could send Joe’s bike down the strip and by a hair Team Honeybun won the Pro Class.

Oh Man. I bet the Bagger Drags Classes are gonna be awesome at Rockingham Dragway for the AMRA/AHDRA/AMA finals the end of October 27 – 29.
In the Dial-in ET classes the man to beat was Casey Smith. He was also kinda the Iron Man of the day. I don’t remember how many bones he broke earlier this year, but it was more than a dozen of us old guys could add up from our crashes. He is back on the bike and was on the tree and running consistent all day.
Hippy and Hannah and their crew have done a great job continuing to build The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Minibike Drag Racing Series. The classes have evolved and added a Dial-In ET Class.
There were lots of Minibikes at the race. Those folks in the Florida Minibike Drag Racing League came to kick some ass. Tim hauled down from Michigan, to race his Minibike against Harleys. The team from Virginia was havin fun. I think that pretty lady said she is building a bike for The Farm. Yes, she can win bikini contests at the beach and race in the hills. The Kentrolis team is one I need to do a feature story on. The ET class is growing now that folks have figured out dial-in racing.
I think Tim lost at Harley Huntin this time. He ran against Chuck Ragan since both were running seven second elapsed times. Chuck is a good sport and down to have fun at the drag strip while putting on a show for fans. Their match race had some of the top Harley teams watching. Jaws dropped when they saw Tim put up a 6.90’s pass. But he lost to Chuck’s 7.01 since Tim was slow off the line.
I was glad to see the Pro Outlaw Minibike class is growing. In that class we allow bigger motors, v-twins, blowers, nitros. Those machines run some scary quick times and miles an hour.
“We had a great turnout and all of our racers feel like family,” Hannah said. “I can’t help but to notice that our numbers improve every race and I am proud of the technological advances that these people are making. Much love to the garage engineers.”
“I am extremely proud of all of our racing family. They get better every time we race. They have gone from nervous amateurs to professional racers in the lanes and on the track. The camaraderie, lifelong friendships and memories will be with me for the rest of my life,” Hippy added.

for the day or camp for the weekend. You can see some great racing, walk the pits and talk to teams, check out vendors and dance to the band. On the strip you will see a variety of race machines – Minibikes, Harleys from stock to extreme, Metric bikes and some Pro Fuelers putting nitromethane in the air. Paul likes to give fans events like those early days when the seats were packed, and the track action was nonstop.
His races usually run into the night when the track cools down. So, hang around for the final rounds. Then check out the winner’s circle where racers are flashing the big handfuls of cash from Paul’s generous payouts. At Wilkesboro folks in the winner’s circle were eating Honey Buns too.
Paul put on a pretty good event at Wilkesboro Dragway for another feather in his race promoting cap. I look forward to going to that little Thunder Valley in the Carolina Mountains again. Go Lumbee Racing and The All Harley World Shootout. See y’all at Farmington Dragway, November 3 – 4.

Hickory’s Newest Bike Shop
Porky’s V-Twin
By alan docKery
here’s a new bike shop on the west side of hickory, NC, y’all need to check out. Porky’s V-Twin can service your Harley or sell you the used bike of your dreams. By next summer it’s gonna become a destination shop for poker runs and parties.
Chris Johnson is the guy behind Porky’s V-Twin and well known in the Hickory area car and motorcycle business. He’s
been riding a long time, started as a young kid on dirt bikes. He first got into business selling high-end foreign sports cars. Chris dealt with the motorcycles that came in on trade. BID Harley in Statesville, really got him into the used motorcycle business while working there. They were the big dog in this area in that market. Came back to Hickory with another motorcycle shop and was selling lots of nice used Harleys. Now Chris and wife Mindy, office manager, have their own shop, Porky’s V-Twin, 2014 1st Avenue Southwest.
“We have a full on garage and can do anything from regular maintenance to rebuilds to create your full custom bike,” Chris said. “Next week we are doing a 26-inch front end and swoop bags on a RoadKing. There’s a 1953 back there with a 1977 motor that we are rebuilding. We have the computers just like the dealers and can do anything out of this shop that they can do. And do it a for a lot less money. From old Harleys to new we can do it. Come in and get a Three Hole Oil Change for $225 and check out Porky’s V-Twin.”
I also saw one of those fat tire millennium choppers on a lift. And a stock recent model bagger that had John and Samantha fixing some electrical problems. Those new bikes would be a nightmare to this old guy. No problem for the folks at Porky’s.
In the back, John Ellis is the Porky’s partner who can take

care of your Harley. He has been riding since the early 1970’s. Working on motorcycles since the late 70’s and been doing it ever since. I’ve seen John working in a few shops around here. He doesn’t have framed certificates from schools on the shop wall. Learned the hard way by working on lots of motorcycles for a long time. Samantha Marshall is a service tech and been riding about four years. She is passionate about working on the new Harleys.
Porky’s buys and sells Used Harleys. Chris can find you the bike you want for a good deal. And they have easy, no-creditcheck financing if you need a while to pay for that dream machine.
By next summer Porky’s will be a destination for parties and poker run stops. Chris has enough room to park lots of bikes. Out back is gonna be a stage. Hey, did you meet Chris at the Cartel Baggers booth at the Smoke Out? Porky’s will soon be a dealer for Cartel Baggers gear. The shop is in a great spot for a quick stop while out bar hopping West Hickory.
Chris and Mindy run a nice local family-friendly bike shop. I’ve seen kids playing in the front. Stop in at Porky’s and sit on the couch. Tell Chris what kind of bike you want or the things that need done to your current ride.

’ll try to keep this from reading like a movie script. But what does a lady do when her man is a famous Top Fuel Harley Drag Racer, and she used to race Top Gas Inline Drag Bikes? Sounds like a great match to me. Ride a Pro Fuel Harley. This is how Bad Apple Mary quickly became a favorite of Harley drag race fans in the Carolinas.
Mary Dangrow had her first two wheel experience at about 10 years old. Dad bought a Honda dirt bike for her and her big brothers and sister. “We had a big horse farm. I rode around in the fields every chance I could get,” Mary said.
Kinda like Tracy, she grew up around a dirt track. Dad raced stock cars and sprint cars in Mercer County Pennsylvania. Mary has her Dad’s race car number on the wheelie bars of her machine -- 421.
“I was about 30 when I got a street bike and started riding. The bike I remember was in 1995 I got a Kawasaki 900. I got
Wow! You Just Won Indy!!! Bad
Apple Mary
properly licensed when I moved down here in 1995,” Mary said. “Then I moved up to a 1500 Kawasaki Nomad. I was just telling them the other day. I grew up in the mindset of anybody who rides a Harley can’t leave their zip code. Not reliable.”
Mary started racing that Nomad in 2000. She went down to Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA, to start learning how the drag strip works and get settled in. Because she had an old race bike at home.
“I had bought a small-tire super gas bike and I didn’t want to get on it since I didn’t know anything about it. So, I took the bags off of my Nomad, put a two into one Vance & Hines Pro pipe on it and took it to the drag strip. Start learning the drag strip. Learn on a bike I was comfortable with. At first, I didn’t do burn outs.”
For a couple years she raced at the Atlanta Dragway. Then in 2003 Mary started running Pro Star. Racing in the Hot Rod Cruiser and Pro ET Classes.
“I went through every class in Pro Star. Ran a Honda CBR 900 RR in Street ET. I eventually got a 1428 Kawasaki ZX-7. Then I went into Super Gas and Super Comp. When I stopped racing in 2010 I was riding a Top Gas. Running 8.20s. But it was all index class racing and I had always wanted to be able to go from Point A to Point B without having to screw around at the finish line.”
Over the next twelve years she worked with some other drag racing teams including the inline fuel bikes A majority of those years she was with Vantine NirtoSport. Mary and Tracy knew each other since both lived in Asheville and hung out at the drag strip. Eventually, it became a serious relationship. And Mary was ready to race again.
Personal Best 7.32 & 181
When she first talked about getting a gas bike just to get back into it, Tracy said no. His trailer doesn’t haul gasoline. By 2021 they had a Pro Fuel machine for her to ride. Now

29 www.FullThrottleMagazine.com
her personal best elapsed time is 7.32 seconds and Mary has been 181 miles an hour.
I really dig Pro Fuel bikes. Fans do to. They put on a great show. Rattle your chest and fill the air with nitromethane. These are the small nitro bikes with 120 cubic inch engines, carburetors and no transmission, single speed only. They are tricky to tune and ride. But when hauling down the strip right they will run 7.30s.
Tracy even pulled off getting her up to speed on the bike without folks in the drag racing world knowing about it.
“The first thing they did was push me around in the pits on the bike. Tracy said he could see that I was going to be able to do it. Walter had seen me ride in Pro Star and said he knew I could do it. Once I was on the running ready to go bike I was about to throw up,” she said.
“They are totally different, Harleys and Jap Bikes. How they leave the line. The torque and revs are different. We went to Rockingham and rented the track. Johnny and Sam and Walter and Tracy went. Johnny had me do a burn out and then took me up to line. Giving me the talk, showing me the line. Then he said he wanted me to go sixty feet. You don’t think I’m gonna know where sixty feet is when I do this. So, he said well count to two.”
“I launched, counted to two and let off. I said to Tracy did it come up on the wheelie bars. He said no why. I told him cause all I saw was blue. He said it was because my head flopped back. My sixty foot times were quicker on the Top Gas bike, the inline motor. But the launch feels so much harder on the Harley.”
Mary made longer and quicker passes as the guys taught her how to ride a nitro Harley. She had the best teachers in the world. They fussed about how quickly she was getting her
feet on the pegs. But soon Mary was settled in and riding a Pro Fuel Harley.
She planned to race 2022, then cancer happened. Treatments postponed her 2022 racing season. By August her radiation treatments were done, and she was healed enough to get back on the race bike. Bad Apple Mary ran at Cecil County and Rockingham in 2022. Oh Yeah, she won at The Rock.
First Pro Fuel Win
At Rockingham, Mary was going rounds. But she faced Paul Anderson, Clarkston, MI, in the final. Paul was the new AMRA Champ in the class.
In the final round Mary beat Paul on a Hole Shot. Paul ran a quicker elapsed time of 7.385 to Mary’s 7.393. But at the starting line, Mary left first with a .130 reaction time to Paul’s .156. She got to the finish .018 seconds ahead of him for her first Pro Fuel Class win.
In 2023 Bad Apple Mary was ready to race and went to North Florida where she made the finals. Finished runner up to Sam White, Chapin, SC. In the Rockingham Spring race the bike blew up. She ran Norwalk, again going to the finals. Indy was Mary’s first win of the 2023 season.
“At Indy there were 11 Pro Fuel bikes and I qualified third. Sam did an Outlaw Class for people who didn’t qualify. It was different because it was the first race that we didn’t have Walter or Johnny around. And I was used to, from the day I started, having Johnny or Walter standing in front of me up there telling me where to go and where to stop.” Mary said.
“I had never started the bike on my own. Tracy and I talked about it. Walter couldn’t go to Indy. The plan this year was for me to learn to handle the bike on my own. Aside from a tuner. I’m 59 years old. I don’t have time to learn the tuning abilities that Tracy Kile has. He will tune it. But as far as handling everything else on the bike I can turn the bike around in the pits, but I had never started it. I had never taken that bike up to the line and lined myself up yet. So, I was nervous about that.”
“Starting a nitro bike, watching these guys do it, intimidated the hell out of me. Tracy said time for me to move to the next step. So, this is what we are going to do. Completely changed my line procedure. Now Tracy helps me pick the spot at the line where I need to go down the track. And then Randy who turns the bike around in the pits, wheels it up to me and puts it on the jack and I start the bike. I started the bike in the pits for all the warm ups.”
“Actually, the procedure he has me doing, not just standing there waiting for Walter to start the bike helps me focus. I’m

turning on my steering stabilizers, so I know a lot of this stuff is set for me. Doing these things calms me and makes me focus better. I felt more focused and more comfortable than when I’m just standing there waiting for Randy and Walter to start it.”
“It helped my reaction times too. I had never put Zero in front of my reaction time. I’m like in the 160’s and 250’s. At Indy I had a .085, .099 and .098.
At the Indy race Mary faced a full field. She went rounds. And once again was ready to race Sam in the final. I asked how it felt beating him.
“Oh, It was awesome. Are you kiddin’ me?” she laughed. “I treed him. I got Sam off the tree. I didn’t see him. Then I saw him coming up beside me. I was pullin’ on him. Both of our bikes were right there side by side. The I lost him. Went past him. He had a crank sensor fail and the bike shut off past 1,000 feet,” Mary said.
You just won Indy!
What counts is the win light. Since I started working on this story there have been a couple more races and she has added another win to the list.
“At Bristol I hurt my rear cylinder and went out first round against Sam,” Mary said. “Then in Cecil County I won against Sam. Winning is always an amazing feeling for all of us but to win at Cecil County Dragway, with Tracy’s friends and family present, That’s like what winning at Indy is for most drag racers. Cecil County Dragway is the home track for the Bad Apple Nation and is the track that I entered my first race on Nitro in 2022. It’s also an amazing facility and surface to race on.”
Mary is learning the bike. Her machine is pretty basic, without the newest computer assisting as it goes down the track.
“I want to get comfortable with the riding and master all of that. The consistency of that bike has gotten me to the final round of every race I have entered but two. I blew up in Rockingham. I’ve been in the finals. I’m meeting Sam and he’s beating me. I’m learning a lot and Sam is helping teach me,” she said.
Mary told me about the other racers and crew members who give her pointers. Folks take time to watch her launch and correct minor things that help control the bike down track. Elbows up, over the bars. Beast Mode. They have Top Fuel bikes to take care of, but also have time to help Mary go even quicker.
Some of the sponsors and folks she thanked are The Fairview Tavern, Capone Landscape, Vanson Leathers and Johnny Vickers and Hawaya Racing.
“When I ran inlines I was sponsored by Vanson. I was one of the Vanson Girls. When I started back again, I contacted them to order some leathers. They sent them to me. Matt Silva called and said I have the bill for your leathers. I said
OK, let me get the credit card. He said Tell Tracy he has to send me a dollar. I said what and he said ‘Once a Vanson Girl you are always a Vanson Girl.’ I thought that was cool. Tracy mailed him a dollar with Bad Apple Racing on it and it’s tacked to their wall.”
“One thing I would like to say has more to do with age than gender. Age doesn’t matter if you want something bad enough. I started nitro racing at 58 and now I’m not only 59, I’m in remission from cancer and going strong. Many people in society stop believing that they can still dream and start a new thing when they get close to 60 or have a major medical situation come up in their life but I am here to tell you that is not the case at all. Nitro racing is no joke and starting it at my age is awesome! My dad raised me to know that I can do anything if I am willing to work hard for it. I have been told I have natural talent for this and if I indeed do that gift was given to me by the Good Lord so I intend to enjoy it and do the best that I can.”
Mary’s advice for young girl fans and how they can get into racing?
“Getting involved in the Junior Drag Racing that is coming back will give a young girl a huge advantage. If they are past the Junior Drag Bike age, then get a street bike that they are familiar with and comfortable on. Start racing in the ET classes. Riding a familiar bike will allow someone to get comfortable with the track. That’s how I started, and I believe it lets a person focus on the track and drag racing procedures instead of worrying about the bike. Taking one step at a time. Like Frank Capone said to me on my journey ‘Pick one thing and focus on that until you do it well, then move on to the next thing. One at a time.’ and that advice is so true,”
If you want to watch Mary thunder down the drag strip, be at Rockingham Dragway end of the month. The Jim McClure World Finals, a combined AMRA/AHDRA/AMA race will be at The Rock October 27 – 29.

Enjoyed The Ride!
e Just recently returned from sturgis with a stop in Shelby, NC for the last 3 games of the American Legion World Series. It was a long trip, but we returned home refreshed and excited about our nation.
My devotion recently spoke of Samuel looking at the sons of Jesse when God sent him to anoint the new king of Israel. Like the rest of us Samuel was looking at the outward appearance trying to determine which one of these young men God had chosen. God chose the youngest based on the content of his heart and not his physical brawn.
1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
I was amazed at the number of people who took their vacation time and used personal funds to volunteer at the Sturgis rally. Local churches and various motorcycle ministries stepped up to help in very meaningful ways.
They worked parking lots to insure people coming in were legit to avoid the $600 tow bill. Provide a place to get out of the rain, rest in a comfortable chair, free or reasonably priced
meal, free bike wash or oil change. Transporting bikes with mechanical issues. Prayer teams at local hospitals were a blessing to many.
One couple lost their wallet on their first day and were left without cash or credit cards. A local church and motorcycle ministry passed the hat and raised the money to get them back home. They fed them breakfast and provided a meal for their return trip home. This couple went to Sturgis to have a fun and when their plans fell through, they ran into Christians following Christ instructions to love our neighbor as ourselves. They were overwhelmed with the love and grace they experienced after suffering a great loss. (Put your cell phone number in your wallet so you can be reached if your lost wallet is found when traveling)
At the American Legion World Series, we met many wonderful young people, their families, and coaches plus a great many people donating their time to assist the many visitors in town for the games. These young people that anyone would be very proud to call their sons, daughters, grandsons, or granddaughters.
The world today overloads us with bad and negative news that divides and depresses us. Our nation has issues, but we have always had issues. The nature of our issues do change with the times. If we turn off the news and look past the scripted worldly outward appearances, we will see the good within our nation and our people. God is not dead!
God knows your heart, so you can be honest when talking with him. God knows the truth and desires for us to want to be in a right relationship with him. You are never too far gone for the blood of Christ to wipe away your sins. If you will invite Jesus into your life and repent of your sins salvation is yours. It will be the most outstanding ride you can ever take here or in eternity! Who can you show the love of Christ with today?
Blessings, Floyd

HMA/Twisted Covenant MSC Poker Run
By: Billy dagenHart
day that changed some peoples image of the biker community happened at the Hickory Museum of Art. Nearly 150 participated in the inaugural Poker Run, all to support Children’s Advocacy and Protection Center. When Twisted Covenant was contacted by HMA to take the lead on this we jumped at the opportunity and not only made it unique, but a lot of fun as well. Exhibits, 20/20 Rock Band, Food Trucks, local tattoo artist Ping, California’s own Ben Venom, Matthew S. Good, Alvaro Torres, and Aloha Shirts all were part of the day. Stops were historic, educational, veterans based, and something completely different.
We want to thank HMA, CAPC, Bob Karney, Tilley HD, all the clubs who attended, and all the new people we had the pleasure to meet and share our story. Thanks for supporting our community and the children by giving of your time so they have the opportunity for a better future!

From The Bitch Pad You’ve Got Mail…
KatHy lynn parnell
(coMe say “Hello” on instagraM: #froMtHeBitcHpad was tickled to receive my very first fan letter recently; Lincoln at Carolinas’ Full Throttle contacted me and forwarded the mail along. And, it was like nothing I could have ever expected. It was from a dog! (Yes, of course, it wasn’t written by the dog, but the author wrote it from his pet’s perspective.) The letter was cleverly written, and the ghost writer did an excellent job! I feel a kind of kinship with this young lass, and I thank her for her letter. She’s miffed about one . little . word . . .
B I T C H
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
1: the female of the dog or some other carnivorous mammals
2: a malicious, spiteful, or overbearing woman
3: something that is extremely difficult, objectionable, or unpleasant
4: complaint
I am not one to argue (My Man is laughing hysterically in the background), but the “bitch pad” is something entirely different and is not designed for a canine. Motorcycle modifications need to be made to keep Rover safe.
As per Google, “bitch pad” is North American slang for a passenger seat behind a motorcyclist.
I cannot compete (not that I am) with a loyal pooch. At this point, I can read my HoneyBun’s mind cuz my ears are ringing, loudly. First, I rarely obey commands, however, food training has worked in the past; I think it’s called “tricks for treats”. OMG! I can’t believe I’m writing this but that’s exactly what he’s thinking, and then some. Second, my nose is usually cold and, third, kissing My Man is one of my favorite pastimes. My bark is worse than my bite, or is it? Now, HoneyBun is investigating “clicker training” on the internet! Geez, what have I started?! I hope he doesn’t go down that rabbit hole and come across shock collars. Who’s the alpha here anyway?
Well, that was fun. Could be worse, right?
Back to the Fan Mail: the writer included a map indicating all the states that he traveled with his faithful companion on his motorcycle, to which there were many. The composer also added an imaginary co-rider driver’s license with the picture of his fido, plus a coin for good luck. I must say that this was ingenious. Even the stamp on the envelope pictured a dog on it. I think we may have another Feature Writer in the making!

Factory Harley-Davidson Rider Kyle Wyman Wins Sunday King Of The Baggers Race At New Jersey Motorsports Park
Vance & Hines/Harley-Davidson Racer Hayden Gillim Wins Saturday Race & Crowned King of the Baggers Series Champion for iMMediate
release
arley-davidson® screamin’ eagle® factory rider Kyle Wyman scored his seventh win of the season and Vance & Hines/Mission Foods Harley-Davidson rider Hayden Gillim secured the season championship on Sunday in the final race of the 2023 MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers series at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J. Vance & Hines/Mission Foods rider James Rispoli finished second in the championship standings and Wyman was third as Harley-Davidson riders claimed the top three spots in final series points.
“It’s been one of, if not the best, year of my life,” said Gillim, who won three races with eight additional podium finishes on the season. “I’m really happy to bring this home for Vance & Hines, for Mission Foods, and for Harley-Davidson. Next season will be a real scrap in this series. Honestly the field is stacked, and if everybody stays next year it’s going to be a tough championship to hold onto.”
In the Friday qualifying session, Wyman broke his own New Jersey Motorsports Park class lap record of 1:24.447 aboard his race-prepared Harley-Davidson® Road Glide® motorcycle. That time would never be approached for the rest of the weekend, as rain resulted in very wet to damp conditions on the 2.25-mile, 12-turn road course on Saturday and Sunday.
Gillim (215 points), Rispoli (213 points) and Wyman (204 points) were each in contention for the championship before the start of the first eight-lap King of the Baggers race on Saturday. As the riders completed a warm-up lap in the rain, Wyman lost control and slid off track. He was able to remount
and start the race, but his motorcycle was damaged, and he retired on lap 3. Gillim took the race lead on lap 3 and was never challenged as early leader Rispoli could not match his pace on the wet track and settled for second place, 9.10 seconds behind Gillim. Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® factory rider Travis Wyman battled to finish in third place and score his first podium finish of the season, just 0.40 seconds behind Rispoli. After the Saturday race, Gillim led Rispoli by 7 championship points, and Wyman was out of contention for the title.
Kyle Wyman bounced back to win the Sunday race, taking the lead on lap 2, after Rispoli ran off the wet track. Wyman opened a gap and stretched his lead to 3.724 seconds over second place Gillim at the finish. Max Flinders finished third on the M3/Revolution Performance Indian. Rispoli finished in seventh place.
“After Rispoli went off, I just tried to be patient, not make a mistake and open a gap,” said Wyman. “I suppose a win in the last race sends a message. It really stings to come up short in the championship after winning the most races, but I’m also proud of my race wins, proud of the team and what it has accomplished from a development standpoint, which trickles down to the other Harley teams. This has been a crazy year and obviously this weekend did not end as we hoped it might, but Harley-Davidson is one-two-three in the championship and that’s the next-best result for us. I want to send a big thanks to everyone at Harley who worked so hard for us this season, and we’ll be back to get them next year.”
At the conclusion of the 14-race 2023 MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers series, Gillim wins the championship with 260 points. Rispoli is second with 242 points, followed by Kyle Wyman with 229 points. Wyman won seven of 14 races on the season, with one additional podium finish. Jake Lewis rode a Team Saddlemen Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle to seventh place with 126 points. Travis Wyman placed eighth with 112 points.

n september 16th i planned on going to a charity event in Spartanburg, SC at “The Shop” at 521 New Cut Road. I had been there before and had a great time. I85 Business is closed for construction before the New Cut Road exit, so I’d have to get off early, and take a couple back roads to get there.
I left home about 9:00AM heading south to I85. After filling up at the local gas station, I entered I85 heading south towards Spartanburg. I veered to the right to get onto I85 Business. I saw the signs of upcoming construction and detours. I exited at Rt 56 (which was as far as I could go) and took the third right off the round-about – Simuel Road. I stayed to the right and went under the railroad tracks. After a couple miles, I turned left onto New Cut Road. “The Shop” was a short way on the right. I could see all the chrome shining in the bright morning sun.
I took a stack of “Full Throttle” magazines out of my pack and walked into the building. I placed the stack of magazines on the table after giving my donation. Established in 1974, “The Shop” is a social club with a HD motorcycle habit. They are proud to do local charity work, and are avid supporters of the Safe Homes Coalition, Mobile Meals, and others.
This ride was their 1st Annual Homeless Veteran Benefit Run. “Warriors Once Again” is a transitional residence for homeless veterans in Spartanburg. It’s a place where veterans can get the help they need when they are homeless. The home gives them a place to live while helping them with their issues so that they can eventually get back into the community. It’s a program designed to restore dignity and regenerate vitality.
For a $20.00 donation, you can draw a card out of the box at “The Shop”, then another at High-Voltage H-D in Spartan-

burg, then to C&C Thunder in Cowpens, SC. A stop at the Palmetto Patriots Home in Gaffney, then another stop at ”Two 95 Grill & Spirits” in Roebuck, SC. Then on to the Lake Bowen Country Club in Inman, SC. The run will end back at “The Shop” for awards, live music, BBQ, and a rifle raffle.
The more I walked around, the more impressed I was with “The Shop” and its members. Everybody I spoke with was friendly. The parking lot in front of the building was smooth concrete with no curb to the street, and there was a large flat grassy field next to the building for overflow parking. The building is split with half set up as a club room with a bar and tables with pictures and awards on the walls. The other half is set up as a small shop to repair any bikes that need it.
At 11:00AM, the bikes started to leave heading to HighVoltage H-D. They didn’t leave as one large group. There were many smaller groups heading in the same direction. I left with one of the small groups heading north on New Cut Road. I veered to the right to go back the way I came. I got onto I85 and was home before noon.
Afterwards, I learned that the benefit run was a complete success. It was because of the total community effort from everyone who attended, local business donations, along with the local Spartanburg TV station WSPA. On the Wednesday before the run, they came with all their TV equipment to do a live remote at The Shop to promote the Homeless Veteran benefit run. Three hundred bikes were on the run that raised $21,000.00 for “Warriors once Again”.

Industry Veteran, Bob Kay, Leads Independent Motorcycle Aftermarket Council
he motorcycle riders foundation (MRF) has formed a council to review the challenges of independent motorcycle dealers and custom bike builders so they may be addressed by the MRF lobbyists in Washington, DC. “We are pleased to have Bob Kay lead the Independent Motorcycle Aftermarket Council, stated Kirk ”Hardtail” Willard, Bob’s firsthand experience over 5 decades will be invaluable to focusing the efforts of our lobbyists.” The recent focus on internal combustion engines is threatening the future of independent motorcycle dealers and custom bike builders to provide alternative service centers as well as servicing older bikes and customization projects. Bob Kay said, “I am extremely proud of the team we put together to focus lobbyists on our right repair and modify with the input we receive from the Independent Motorcycle Aftermarket Network.” The Independent Motorcycle Aftermarket Council chaired by Bob Kay membership includes Keith Ball from Bikernet, Chris Callen from Cyclesource Magazine, Scott Hakins from S&S, Steve Broyles from Stevenson Cycles, John Jessup from Dream Rides, Jason Hallman from Cycle Stop USA and John O’Brien of Hardcore cycles.

About the Motorcycle Riders Foundation
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) provides leadership at the federal level for states’ motorcyclists’ rights organizations as well as motorcycle clubs and individual riders. The MRF is chiefly concerned with issues at the national and international levels that impact the freedom and safety of American street motorcyclists. The MRF is committed to being a national advocate for the advancement of motorcycling and its associated lifestyle and works in conjunction with its partners to help educate elected officials and policymakers in Washington and beyond.
Right to Repair – You or the repair shop of your choice should have access to the tools, parts, and technology you need. However, manufacturers want to restrict your ability to service, maintain and repair your bike.
Right to Modify – The ability to modify and customize your bike is a fight the MRF has won before. In the 1990’s the MRF defeated a proposal that would have limited modification to “color and chrome.” We continue to fight for consumers rights to modify products they buy how they see fit.
Renewable Fuels – The availability of fuel for use in motorcycles is under attack. The MRF fights for the universal availability of approved fuel blends, containing no more than 10% ethanol by volume.
Internal Combustion Engines – Not only is the fuel we need under attack, but the engines that burn that fuel are being targeted. A push to ban the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines is happening right now! We believe Americans should have the right to choose what time of engine to buy not have the choice mandated by the government.
End of Life Directives – In Europe, “end of life directives” require vehicles over a certain age be turned in for destruction. Policy ideas that first appear in Europe have a history of popping up in the United States. The ability to own, collect, work on, and refurbish older motorcycles is a fundamental part of who we are as motorcyclists. The MRF will battle any end-oflife directives in the U.S.
Protect the Motorcycle Ecosystem – Independent shops and manufacturers are a critical part of the motorcycle ecosystem. They provide choice and competition in the marketplace. The MRF believes that to preserve the lifestyle and culture of motorcycling, independent shops and manufacturers must be protected.

Ride For Allen Hoyt
By: roB Harper
llen hoyt is a kind, generous and helpful person. Among other things, he was getting back into tree service, something he has done in the past. One day, while helping a neighbor, an equipment failure caused Allen to drop 20+ feet to the ground. Medical bills and lack of income make for a very bad situation, especially if you are self-employed like Allen.
To help, some friends planned a BBQ chicken plate sale, and a 100 mile+ motorcycle ride to raise money. The event would take place at The Bar, aka Hog Pen in Kittrell, NC starting at 11:00am on Sept 9. I waited for a band of rain to pass then headed out. When I arrived at noon, there were already a few dozen people gathered inside and outside under cover, talking, and eating. I decided to eat before the ride began at 1:00. It looked like we may have a small window of OK weather to get in the scheduled ride, but that window closed quickly.
The ride was scheduled to go from Kittrell to Bahama, Creedmoor, Henderson and back to The Bar. Due to severe thunderstorms, it was shortened to 25 miles. Only a handful of bikers decided to make the ride and of course we ended up soaked. Back at The Bar there were cold beverages and more BBQ plates for anyone that hadn’t eaten before the ride. At the end of the day, 150 BBQ chicken plates were devoured and $4,200 was raised for Allen. A big thanks for everyone who participated, and especially the volunteers who organized and worked on the event.

21st Annual Catawba County Shriners Run
here are some rides ya Just gotta make. The second weekend in September was busy. Smoke Out Friday, Cannonball Saturday and the 21st Annual Catawba County Shriners Run that Sunday.
I was glad to see bikers who helped start this ride twenty one years ago still riding. We had a large active CBA chapter then and wanted to put on a local charity event. John Parker (RIP) suggested the Shriners Children’s Hospital as a good cause to raise some more for. “No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child,” Abraham Lincoln. We had that saying on the T-shirts.
Eventually, the Catawba County Shrine Club took over managing the ride with Dennis and Terry Grigg as coordinators for several years. Jimmy Cline has taken the lead on the ride and plans to do it for years to come. He did a good job continuing the tradition.
What a nice MidSeptember Sunday afternoon we had to ride on the 21st Dice Run. Jimmy laid out a local route with stops in Catawba, Burke and Lincoln Counties. While folks turned in their hands, the Shriners served all the riders and volunteers
some real good BBQ and fixins. I saw some new faces at the club helping out this year. Looking forward to when we ride on the 30th anniversary.
Jimmy ended the day with a bunch of good door prizes after folks finished eating and were relaxing with a cold beverage.
The winners were: Best Roll $500 went to Brian, second was Kevin and Richard was third. Jordan had the lowest roll.
“We want to thank our sponsors and all our supporters for making Catawba County Shrine Club’s 21st Dice Run successful. As well as thanks to our members who give of their time and talents to make sure everything went smoothly. I hope to continue this success for many more years to come,” Catawba County Shrine Club Run Coordinator, Jimmy Cline.

Tiny’s Tales From The Road Biker Movies
By: dereK siKes
ometime in the 1960’s, Biker movies became all the rage. These low budget biker flicks were pure exploitation of savage outlaws on 2 wheels hell bent on rape, carnage, booze, and dope all while having a good time. Motorcycles had been featured in movies since as early as 1909, with The Uncontrollable Motorcycle. Headlines in postWorld War Two America inspired a new wave of cinema with the now iconic The Wild One, a story based on true life events in a sleepy little California town called Hollister. It wasn’t really a new genre; however, it was just old wine in a new bottle. These movies borrowed heavily from other genres of film, mostly Westerns.
In the case of life imitating art these new biker films influenced a whole generation of bikers. Taught them how to act, how to ride, how their machines
should look and most importantly how they, as bikers, should look. Not all bikers were not too happy about this. In the memoir Kick Start-Memories of an Outlaw Biker by Ralph “Teach” Elrod mentions trying to get the local drive-ins to stop playing these b-movie biker flicks because they were giving bikers a bad rap in the eyes of citizens (non-bikers for you squares). Meanwhile in California, where bad publicity is as good as good publicity, many bikers earned a decent amount of cash renting out their machines, appearing as extras and even co-staring along with bona fide Hollywood stars in these movies. In the midst of all this biker exploitation a young college student in the Midwest with a camera and a tape recorder joined a motorcycle club and documented life from within.
The Bikeriders by Danny Lyon published in 1968, before the term “biker” became widespread and an image tattooed in our brains. The Bikeriders has long been considered a seminal work of photojournalism, but it could be considered an obscure book to most modern “bikers”. The iconic image of an Outlaw crossing the Ohio River with his colors facing the camera and his head turned away, greasy hair in the wind was a popular poster but many people didn’t know the origin story. Recently, Hollywood has recreated the era of The Bikeriders into a full big budget film inspired by the book but fictionalized. This movie is due to hit theaters in time for the holiday season. How this movie will affect popular culture is yet to be seen. It might not even register on the radar and fall flat but given the amount of buzz on social media I highly doubt that it won’t leave its mark on the current generation of motorcyclists, especially those that enjoy the cosplay aspects of digging up old motorcycles, vintage clothes and pretending to

live in an era that makes sense, at least on a screen. In our lifetime we can point to a show called Sons of Anarchy, which had it not been for Netflix might have been cancelled, but enough people binge watched the first few seasons to turn this biker melodrama into watercooler talk for a bunch of people that wouldn’t be able to tell you the difference between an Dyna Wideglide and an FXR, it’s a chopper baby, Zed’s dead. And let us not forget the movie about a couple of drug dealer baby boomers who made a big score to fund a couple of far out choppers to ride to Mardi Gras that influenced a whole generation of choppers. The cycle keeps repeating (pun intended) but not every movie is a hit. For a lot of people, the movie Hell Ride was completely overlooked, along with dozens of other terrible biker movies that are now available for streaming on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
As long as the general public has an insatiable appetite for bad boys and their toys the biker movie genre will never die, the stories will just be retold over and over again. The funniest part about this is that for most of us, these movies are so far out and wild compared to our lives. Many motorcycle riders most dangerous encounters aren’t with outraged citizens or the local sheriff who really has it out for bikers because his town is a good wholesome All-American town, they are with distracted drivers, recap tire treads and wildlife too close to the roads, but that would make a really boring movie, wouldn’t it?

Molly’s “Rooster” 1980SportsterIronhead
olly, who is usually burning up the road on her 2021 billiard teal road glide, wanted to add an antique motorcycle to her garage. She ended up getting a great deal on a sweet 1980 custom Ironhead Sportster that she named Rooster. “I had a 1966 Mustang for a really long time, it was my very first car and I sold it during COVID. That’s what I really learned to work on engines with and I missed it, so I decided we’d go the bike route for an antique this go round” Molly said. The bike had been rebuilt by the previous owner and had a killer custom paint job already on it. But it’s an Ironhead, so she’s had some roadside fun, fulfilling her goal to have something to work on. “When I bought it, it was not running so that was the first thing getting it back in working condition. Changing out all the fluids, setting points that kind of thing. We made our biggest trip so far to the Smokeout rally in Salisbury and ended up on the side of 85. I’ve had quite a few electrical incidents and this go round it was just something easy, the ignition coil wiring came loose from the emission coil. So we lost all power to the bike and I had to pull over and break out the tools, which I now carry religiously on this bike, and just put it back on and kept rolling. We’ve got most of it sorted out and I’m looking forward to some longer runs in the future.” Molly Added. Even though Rooster missed the podium at the Smokeout, it has earned top marks at Camel City Bikefest & The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 25th Anniversary Bike Night. If you see her out and about, make sure you ask her about her valve stem caps.

The Original Chopper Party Smokeout Rally ‘23
By: lincoln infield
he smokeout rally has been a tradition in the biker community for a long time. The event celebrated 20 years, took two years off and was revived by its current care takers, Chris and Heather Callen of Cycle Source Magazine. They brought the rebirth of the rally to its original home at the Rowan County Fair Grounds in Salisbury, NC and added some new features. An epic Legends Gallery Bike Show, dirt drags, and the world’s strongest biker were added to this already storied event. The first year of this revived version of the Smokeout saw a mostly rainy two day forecast that may have kept the event from its full glory. But rain really doesn’t slow down a Smokeout crowd, just adds a little mud to the party. This year’s event still had a little bit of rain in the forecast, but was a predominantly dry event and party goers responded.
The event spans from Thursday through Sunday, and while
there is plenty of partying and live music, Thursday is more of a move in day, pre-party type day. Friday the action really kicks in and if you want to get the full effect of the Smokeout you make sure to camp out and attend the whole weekend. The only early risers other than the event promoters are those who never made it to bed the night before and the party starts rolling around 11am with the first two bike shows of the weekend. The FXR bike show along with the Perewitz Paint Show occupy the midway of the fairgrounds in front of the huge Smokeout live music stage that was hosting bands all day. FXR fans, eat your heart out, there were FXR’s of all years, models and colors. Some radically modified and others like they came off the assembly line. The FXRs occupied one side of the field and the other was a mixed bag of choppers, bobbers, baggers and cruisers all with wild paint jobs vying for the attention of Dave & Jody Perewitz who were cruising

the bike show field.
As the judges perused this fine field of steal, event Emcee, Jack Schit was doing the play by play down behind the stage at the World’s Strongest Biker Competition. Bikers of all shapes and sizes competed in a series of biker themed strength competitions, tire throwing, dead lifting and engine carrying. The engine carry is some serious shit. Three engines must be carried 50 some feet and placed on a table. The heaviest of the 3 engines is a 160lb Sportster engine and transmission. I tell ya, some hernias were aggravated on this day!
Roadside Marty’s wet t-shirt contest attracted some buxom biker babes to the stage and entertained all the red-blooded bikers in the crowd. Roadsides keeps the crowd rolling while the ladies heat up the night. Just don’t get in the way of Roadside Marty’s dad’s view of the stage! While the wet-shirt contest went on the main stage was prepped for the Smokeout Rally headliner, Drowning Pool! The midway was full of people rocking out to Drowning Pool and the campground was a stellar party as well. Camper to camper, tent to tent the Smokeout party raged late into the night. The burnout pit was just the right amount of sketchy. Experienced burnouts were done solo, but sometimes it takes a village to raise a little hell and some ballsy bikers get in the pit to hold the bikes front end in place.
Dawn patrol on Saturday was dreary slow, I saw photographer Benny Stucker wandering around with an umbrella snapping shots of the mayhem left from the night below. Most of the camp had found a place to fall asleep around sunup so a little rain didn’t bother anything. Naturally the day was full of live music with a line up consisting of City Awake, Poontanglers, One For The Road, Sneaky Tree and Wolftooth. The bike shows for the day were Led Sled’s Sportster Showdown and the Smokeout Rally Ride In Bike Show. The midway was absolutely packed with killer bikes. Pans, Knucks, Flattys, Shovels, and even some super modern bikes like the Evo, TC and I even saw an M8. Metric bikes weren’t left out either with a pile of CB750’s, XS650’s and more. It was a chopper paradise, for sure. They had a ton of awards to hand out and every bike that came through was stunning. This year’s Full Throttle Choice went to Randy Richardson’s purple Ironhead chopper. Maggie and I had admired this bike the day before and it checked a lot of boxes for us. Congrats to Randy and thanks to Chris and Heather for letting us be a part of this epic bike show.
Inside the main building of the fairgrounds is the Legends Gallery that is put together by Randall of the Cycle Showcase in St. Louis, MO. Putting together bike shows as art galleries is this dude’s business, and business is good. It was an epic display of some killer bikes that only the Smokeout Rally brings to the east coast. Also inside the Legends Gallery was the Tankful exhibit. Multiple artists paint tank halves that are then displayed and auctioned off with the proceeds going to Meals On Wheels. The artwork on these tanks is amazing and raised a ton of money for this great program.
Now for one of my favorite parts of the Smokeout. In Continues

between the main midway and the camping area, there was beautifully manicured dirt track area. Earlier in the day the dirt oval was host to the minibike racing which features heats of costume rocking minibike racing jockeys battling for first place. But now, as evening was upon us, it was time for the dirt drags. The grandstands were full, the lights were blazing, and it was time to see some old school dirt drags. Run what ya brung, with a fully functional light tree for official starts. But before the racing began Cher Fording absolutely belted out a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. Now that it was proper, the racing began. Minibikes, choppers, dirt bikes, antiques and a go cart all took passes. Man, this is it! These bikes are a bit squirrley out the gate, throwing rooster tails of dirt and hauling ass the length of the dirt track. Honest, it’ll make the hair stand up on your arms, we damn sure love racin’ in the south!
Roadside put on another epic wet t-shirt contest that night and Wolftooth closed out the main stage. But the night was full of epic burnouts, and camping parties deep into the night. Sunday is real drag for weekend Smokeout participants, but, there is church service and bike blessing to absolve all your smoke out sins and then a free pancake breakfast to soak up the last of the alcohol in your system before having to break up camp and get the hell out. Ya’ll this is just a recap of the weekend. The Smokeout Rally is something you just have to witness for yourself. The caliber of bike builders that come to The Smokeout is amazing. A ton of local talent and some big names that you’ve only seen on IG and in photos at bike shows on the other side of the nation. This is a national event, that resides, luckily, in our back yard. This is the Original Chopper Party, and it is awesome! If you didn’t make it this year, go ahead and ask off for September 5-8, 2024. No excuses, this is where you need to be. I’ll see ya there!

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,” said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, “One for you, one for me, one for you, One for me...” He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. “Come here quick,” said the boy, “you won’t believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!” The man said, “Beat it kid, can’t you see it’s hard for me to walk.” When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, “One for you, one for me. One for you, One for me.” The old man whispered, “Boy, you’ve been tellin’ me the truth. Let’s see if we can see the Lord”. Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord. At last, they heard, “One for you, one for me. That’s all. Now let’s go get those nuts by the fence and we’ll be done”. They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him.
A wife got so mad at her husband she packed his bags and told him to get out. As he walked to the door she yelled, “I hope you die a long, slow, painful death.” He turned around and said, “So, you want me to stay?”
During my check-up I asked the Doctor, “Do you think I’ll live a long and healthy life then?” He replied, “I doubt it somehow. Mercury is in Uranus right now.” I said, “I don’t go in for any of that astrology nonsense.” He replied, “Neither do I. My thermometer just broke.”
After a prolonged drought when the rain came, all the animals in the forest were happy except the Kangaroo. When the others asked him what the reason was for such sadness, the Kangaroo revealed that the rain meant that all its kids would now be playing inside.

The wife and I took a long, leisurely drive out to the country and pulled over to fill up our car’s gas tank and tires... She was surprised to see that the station had a fee to fill the tires and asked me, “Why in the world do they charge for AIR?!” I responded, “Inflation.”
A man is walking through the woods when he sees a bear charging at him. He books it, but he knows he can’t outrun a bear for long, so he starts praying, “Dear Lord, I beseech thee. Please, o Lord, please let this bear be a Christian!” The bear catches up to him, knocks him down on the ground, then gets on its knees and says, “Dear Lord, thank you for this food I am about to receive...”
A guy is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and sees a snail on the porch. He picks up the snail and throws it as far as he can. A year later, there’s another knock at the door. He opens it and sees the same snail. The snail says, “What was that all about?”
Tim decided to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend. One evening, after the honeymoon, he was organizing his golfing equipment. His wife was standing nearby watching him. After a long period of silence, she finally speaks: “Tim, I’ve been thinking, now that we’re married maybe it’s time you quit golfing. You spend so much time on the course. You could probably get a good price for your clubs.” Tim gets this horrified look on his face. She says, “Darling, what’s wrong?” “For a minute
there you were beginning to sound like my ex-wife.” “Ex-wife!” she screams, “I didn’t know you were married before!” “I wasn’t,” he replied.
My friend once called a few house painters to his house for some work. He wanted them to paint his porch. After a few hours, the house painters came back for the payment as their work was complete. Before leaving they told my friend that they had enjoyed painting his car, but it is not really a Porsche.
A New York attorney representing a wealthy art collector called his client and said to him, “Saul, I have some good news and I have some bad news.” The art collector replied, “I’ve had an awful day; let’s hear the good news first.” The attorney said, “Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she invested $5,000 in two pictures that she thinks will bring a minimum of $15-20 million. I think she could be right.” Saul replied enthusiastically, “Well done! My wife is a brilliant businesswoman! You’ve just made my day. Now I know I can handle the bad news. What is it?” The attorney replied, “The pictures are of you with your secretary.”
Four men are in the hospital waiting room because their wives are having babies. A nurse goes up to the first guy and says, “Congratulations! You’re the father of twins.” “That’s odd,” answers the man. “I work for the Minnesota Twins!” A nurse says to the second guy, “Congratulations! You’re the father of triplets!” “That’s weird,” answers the second man. “I work for the 3M company!” A nurse tells the third man, “Congratulations! You’re the father of quadruplets!” “That’s strange,” he answers. “I work for the Four Seasons Hotel!” The last man is groaning and banging his head against the wall. “What’s wrong?”, the others ask. “I work for 7 Up!”
A cruise ship passes by a remote island, and all the passengers see a bearded man running around and waving his arms wildly. “Captain,” one passenger asks, “who is that man over there?” “I have no idea,” the captain says, “but he goes nuts every year when we pass him.”
