We will have a $500 door prize for Saturday and Sunday. Ladies, come dressed to impress for the Miss CBA Bike Show & Swap Meet Contest to be held on Saturday, with a cash prize. You can find motorcycle parts new and used and chrome parts for your bike. You can find motorcycles clothes, jewelry, and accessories [don’t forget Christmas is right around the corner]. We want to remind you that when you attend our show, or any CBA event across the State, all the money stays in North Carolina and is used to promote our sport and lifestyle and to be your eyes and voice in Raleigh and Washington, DC. We try to keep you informed of legislation that affects us as bikers. We talk to legislators and let them know how we feel.

We fight against some legislation and also help introduce some favorable legislation. You need CBA and CBA needs you. We need a united motorcycle organization to have more impact with the Legislators. Remember, “United we stand - divided we fall”. Join our/your organization now! Now, for my soapbox speech. It really saddens me that so many bikers are not interested in fighting for their rights and freedoms. I have been involved in the biker’s rights movement since 1971. I know what it is like to lose some rights! Unfortunately, so many young and/or new riders don’t know what it is like to have some rights taken away from them. These young riders and new riders need to wake up and realize that their sport and/or lifestyle can be changed and taken away if you are not willing to take a stand and fight for your rights. Where would we be if our forefathers and soldiers had just sat around in a bar drinking, and none of them were willing to stand up and fight for their and our rights? Are you a drinker or a patriot willing to fight for your rights and lifestyle or will you sit back and complain when things don’t go your way? This is definitely not the ‘fun’ part of being a CBA member, but it is our most important responsibility so that we can continue to enjoy the lifestyle we all love so much. Join the CBA and help us to help you. Thunder In The Smokies Fall Motorcycle Rally By: WildThing You know, weather can easily make or break an outdoor motorcycle event. Chris and Lori, promoters of Thunder In The Smokies rallies, know that first hand. Over the past fourteen years we have huddled with them under canopies overflowing with torrential rain showers, slugged through the soaked grass for the bike games, and donned every piece of leather we could to stave off the cold! Hey, we’ve even commiserated with them when the powers that be shut down beer sales just as the rally got started. They have paid their dues. They were rewarded with beautiful weather the weekend of September 9 - 11. It was even a little on the warm side, but the bikers came roaring through the gates Friday afternoon and the parade didn’t stop until it was time to close up. Matter of fact, I think this fall was one of the very best attended rally put on by Handlebar Corral. There was a great variety of vendors set up in their colorful tents all around the perimeter of the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds, offering goods from children’s biker apparel, varicolored metal wall hangings, biker jewelry, to leather riding apparel. And they were open for business from 11 am to 11pm. Smokey Mountain Steel Horses had a large canopy spot adjacent to the stage and were showing off the newest Indian Motorcycles as well as some real glitzy apparel. The good folks at Smokey Mountain Steel Horses sponsored the concerts for the weekend and Friday evening Jody Medford was on first and then Tyler Reeve took the stage. Both good guys, but the crowd was waiting for the headliner. Confederate Railroad took the stage at 9:30 and was greeted by wild applause and some hootin’ and hollerin’. The crowd was invited to move up closer to the stage and you had to be careful not to get run over. Needless to say, Confederate Railroad was a crowd pleaser! Saturday morning we got to the rally just as the ride-in bike show was starting up under beautiful blue skies with high puffy clouds. There were 40 bikes in the show open to all makes and models. Winners are determined by peoples’ choice

by attendees that are given a ticket at the gate and placing it in the upturned helmet beside their favorite bike. Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group sponsored the cash prizes for the bike show. Mark and Missy, reps for the McGrath Law Group were happy to have their picture made with the first place winner, Weirdo from Whiteville, TN with his patriotic military themed Harley. First runner-up was Glen Merryman of Augusta, GA with his 2015 Indian and second runner-up was Jeffrey Blake of Raleigh, NC on a 2013 Harley Street Glide. Congratulations guys. The bike show awards marks the start of the bike games. The games surely draws the crowd to the opposite end of the Festival Grounds where there is plenty of room for the slow race, weinie bite, the toilet paper and plunger race, and a new favorite, bouncing down the field on a large purple ball and tagging your partner who has to bounce back! The cash prizes for these games attract a ton of contestants and they definitely entertain the spectators. After the games, a lot of folks scatter to the local eateries for some supper before riding back to catch the evening bands. Ali Randolph and the Outta Luck Band took the stage at 5. They are from western NC and play some high-energy rock and country music and she has a Popcorn Sutton song, if ya know what I mean. Next up was McKenzie’s Mill, brothers from West End, NC, now in Nashville, TN, rocked ‘em out with their brand of country / southern rock. Last up was HER, and I’m sorry to say I didn’t hang around for her, but I know Chris and Lori usually pick winners, so the crowd was probably well entertained. If you are not ready to go home Sunday morning of the Thunder in the Smokies rallies, hang out for a free pancake breakfast at 9 and church service at 10. The vendors are usually open til 3 and some music is playing, so it’s not over til it’s over. 7th Annual Bikers 4 Boobs Breast Cancer Ride By: Mark Infield On Saturday, August 20, 2016, HarleyDavidson of Greensboro hosted the 7th Annual Bikers 4 Boobs Breast Cancer Ride. The cost to ride was $20 per bike. This ride benefits Randolph Hospital’s Mammogram Fund. Registration began at 8am and lasted until approximately 11am when 220 bikes fired up and rolled out on a 2 hour police escorted ride through Guilford & Randolph Counties. Upon their return to the Motorcycle Park, riders were treated to music by Red Dirt Revival with Special Guest Singer Troi Nance. United Riders prepared the food and there was a silent auction and a 50/50. Dotty Kindly won the $86 and gave it back to the charity. Fay Morgan, the founder of Bikers 4 Boobs wanted to say a big THANK YOU, to everybody that stood behind Bikers 4 Boobs this year with all the changes and the change of venue. She said, “I gave a lot of hugs to first time riders and new survivors. Lot of “hi’s” and “how are you doing” to riders and survivors that have been

with us from our very first ride. Thank you all for your support and love. I want to thank all my vendors and volunteers, Guilford County Sheriff’s Department all of the Fire Departments that help block for us. Greensboro H-D, Mark....your staff was a pleasure to work with and we appreciate your generous donation. Our band Red Dirt Revival was a blast to sing and dance with. I love you guys. 4th Annual Walkin’ Roll Poker Run Story and photo by Alan Dockery August can be so hot, but riding keeps us cool and helping others makes our hearts feel good. This makes four years that Hickory, NC bikers have ridden in an event to raise money for the Walkin’ Roll Activities League, Inc. They are a non-profit providing free activities for children and adults with developmental disabilities. I was proud to see how the 150 bikers and about 300 people stepped up to raise a bunch of money for the sports programs, dances, bowling, choir, and personal needs of our neighbors. After all expenses, the sponsors and bikers raised almost $11,000. This brings the four-year total is more than $53,000. “Our league is a league of abilities, not disabilities. Our purpose is to provide quality activities in a fun atmosphere and develop each players potential to the fullest,” said Sharon Barlow, Director. Sherrill Baxter started this ride and makes sure it’s a great day for the bikers and everyone involved. We had a nice ride and there were several activities at the end. No dead time waiting around to see who won. Starting with free hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken sandwiches, soda and water frosty adult beverages were available. The Activities League Choir performed. There were door prizes and auctions. You could make a lap of the fairgrounds on a cool little train. The local dune buggy guys were a big hit giving rides around the midway. Perry and Gloria Godwin won the poker run. Susie Canrobert had the worst hand. “There are lots of people to thank for today’s successful

poker run fundraiser,” Sherrill said. “Thanks to the volunteers who worked the poker run. Everybody involved bought shirts and poker hands and had a vested interest in the event. “Thanks to the sponsors and I know there are too many for y’all to list, but special thanks to the Lone Eagle Riding Club, Hickory Riding Club, Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson, Hickory American Legion Post 48 and Dennis Hefner of Specialty Welding for the custom fire pit we auctioned off.” For more information on the Activities League, how to participate in their events and assist with future fundraising needs visit www.walkinroll.org.

The Latest Longmire Mystery “An Obvious Fact” Book Review By: WildThing Longmire fans will be thrilled with the twelfth novel in Craig Johnson’s bestselling series, the basis for the hit series Longmire returning to Netflix for it’s fifth season. New York Times best selling author, Mr. Johnson has won awards for his modern day western themed novels. Of particular interest to motorcycle enthusiasts is that he is one of us and “An Obvious Fact” is set in Hulett, Wyoming, which is located just across the South Dakota border, and takes place during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It starts out with a young biker being run off the road and ends up in the hospital in critical condition. Sheriff Walt Longmire is called in to help the local LEO’s who are overwhelmed with bikers roaring through their normally sleepy town creating havoc. It is soon clear to Longmire that the young biker’s crash was no accident and he sets out to find the truth. His good friend Henry Standing Bear who has an ulterior motive for coming to the rally – making another attempt to win the Jack Pine Hill Climb, aids him. Mr. Johnson carefully weaves Longmire’s investigation around the clubs that are attending the rally, a lovely femme fatale with a background, motorcycles, and some interesting locals all set against the backdrop of Devil’s Tower, America’s first National Monument. And he threw in the ATF for good measure. This novel is fast-paced with lively characters and twists to the investigation that you may have to re-read to follow! In the end you will be pleased with the conclusion and will wish for another rousing Longmire story. “An Obvious Fact” is published by Penguin Random House LLC and was released September 13, 2016. This book is absolutely a must read, but be careful, you might get hooked by the easy writing style of Craig Johnson and clamor for more.

Geico Hot Bike Tour And Blue Ridge Parkway Ride Photo By: Wally Wersching

By: Grant So I guess I will start off and say I’ve sat on my fat butt all summer and my wife is tired of seeing me. So after Labor Day she says you need to go somewhere. Looking at my trusty Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for current events and other media sources, I see the Geico Hot Bike tour is making its way through the western NC Mountains. Asheville, Maggie Valley, Knoxville, and Chattanooga were this year’s locations. I decide to join them in Maggie Valley to see what it’s all about. Leaving out of Concord, I traveled to Blue Ridge Parkway via 601 to 52 North. Stopping to visit Mayberry, NC (Mt Airy) and have some pie at Barneys Café, I hit the parkway for a ride to Laurel Springs at Stations Inn. Clean rooms and cold cheap beer is always a draw for me plus 50¢ wings on Wednesday is another reason to stay the night. Thursday morning the Tour was to arrive in Maggie, so I decided to ride the parkway all the way down riding the parkway about 180 curvy miles including going to visit the top of Mt Mitchell departing the parkway in Waynesville at Hwy 276. I have been a bum all summer and my shoulders and arms showed it. Man I was sore Friday. The Geico Tour had a hand full of sponsor vendors travelling with it, but with the Boone Bike Rally near and whatever causes bikers to end up in Maggie Valley, it was a win win for the area. Hotels were full and restaurants were busy as well. Wheels through time and The Stomping Ground were ground zero for events. Luckily, my motel was 2 doors down, so after check in I grabbed a cold one to make my rounds. There were lots of homemade bobbers, 26” slammed wheel bikes, and lots of loud mufflers, or lack of them. The party went on till 10PM for events and then it was bars, motel parking lots, and places that make a biker party a hell of a lot of fun. I talked with a lot of the riders in the tour and I have a new respect for the big wheel, slammed, air suspension riders. I don’t know where they got the money to build those bikes being that most of them were very young, but they reminded me of my joy in the 70’s wrenching on my GTO, Hurst Olds, Chevelle and other joys I owned at one time or another. Bikes are their passion. Wheels Through Time had a lot of vendors and lots and lots of bikes in their parking lot. If you have never been there you got to hit it at some point in riding the Maggie Valley area. I got to say it was very relaxing for me to hit the parkway and just ride. After two motels, two good meals, smokes, beer, gas, and snacks, I spent no more than $200 for a 3-day trip that covered almost all of our beloved Blue Ridge Parkway. It just about killed me coming down Black Mountain on I-40, like

riding into an oven. All I can say is it was a fun filled adventure. It’s now cooling off and us older folk can come out of the AC. So I say go for it, Pack up and head out. Remember, tomorrow may never come. Do it and keep the shiny side up.

By: Trisha Beasley It was so nice to take part in the 6th Annual Bikers For Bikers Foundation Music Festival on September 9-10, 2016. Bikers for Bikers Foundation (BFBF) does so much for bikers. They are a registered 503(b) non-profit organization. This is the certification needed to operate as a straight non-profit entity. One of the many benefits from supporting an organization such as this is that you can rest assured that your donations are tax deductible. You can also rest assured that your donations and contributions go directly to the organization and their efforts to support bikers. Bikers For Bikers Foundation receives numerous requests during the year. These requests are to provide assistance to bikers that have, in many cases been involved in a motorcycle accident in which there are many financial concerns that become major issues for the individual to sustain themselves with basic living expenses. Of course, the people that request assistance normally have major medical expenses that are amplified by the financial burden

of the injured party and their family. In many cases, the high costs of medical treatment alone is enough to immediately set anyone back after only one surgery or treatment. Bikers For Bikers Foundation works to assist these families. BFBF also acts as a resource for bikers to gain information and knowledge about rights, responsibilities, and legal counsel. Others might request assistance after being diagnosed with a terminal or a loss of life. Anyone can request assistance from BFBF. The charter’s executive process, meetings, and documented requests are then expedited to determine what assistance can be provided. This is why it is so important for bikers to support a non-profit group like Bikers For Bikers Foundation. They can assist more bikers because we go out and donate towards a weekend of fun, music, food, beverages, camping, brother/sister hood, and camaraderie of bikers. This is why it is so important that we support BFBF. This “Music Festival” event is one of the major events for the year. BFBF plans the entire event, organizes the location, and needed vendors so that we have our necessities right there on location. We, in turn, just show up with our friends, club members, and families to have a day of planned fun comprised of live music, food, beverages, vendors, and camping facilities All this is organized and we pay or donate some minimal fee. The weekend pass for this event was only $20! Wow! That’s about what I pay for a movie ticket, which lasts a maximum of about two hours. BFBF provided a two-day event at around the same price! And, we know that each and every dollar that we give to the foundation is going to be used to help one of our brothers or sisters in need. This alone inspires me to give more! I want to get my weekend pass ticket, I want to buy a tee-shirt (for me and someone else), I want to get 10 raffle tickets instead of one, and I want to support the vendors that have come out as well.

This particular weekend was funded by a number of sponsors, supporters, vendors, local businesses, charter members, and bikers. For example, I was able to talk with the beer girls that came from the Redneck Yacht Club. They came out and donated their time, served beverages while listening to the bands and accepted only tips for their pay. This year was their 6th Annual Music Festival. The events that were set up included a long list of bands and vendors. All bands and vendors were at the Vander Community Center. The stage was set to “Rock-n-Roll” for the entire weekend. Another great thing about the weekend, all these bands come together to support bikers. The vendors are also there to support bikers and provide services that you might take advantage of during the wonderful two-day concert event. The camp grounds were set up for those that wanted to take part in the two day event without having to leave the grounds. Others are content to come and go throughout the weekend. Bikers For Bikers Foundation is able to provide this type of all-inclusive service for a minimal cost because of their sponsors. This year’s sponsors were so kind and generous. BFBF wanted to send a special thanks to all the sponsors and bands as they gave generously so that everyone could participate in the entire weekend festivities at a minimal cost. There are so many thanks to give, as it was certainly the efforts of many to orchestrate this entire weekend of events. The sponsors for the weekend included Jason E. The bands that volunteered their time to play for us and BFBF included: Bubba Joe and the Bruisers, The Rusted Rails, Bloody Sabbath, Idlewild South, The Robbie Reed Band with Mike Gillemore & Randy Blinddog Lambert, Breakin The Law, Red Dog Band, The Rousers, Wide Open Throttle, and The Chemical Lizzards. All these bands came from all over the state to play and they put on a great show for us to enjoy. A “very special” thank you is due to Robert Hendrix for his dedication as a BFBF Charter Member and Stage Coordinator. His dedication and loyalty are proof he owns it! The gratitude and thanks are so important as these events are hard work for all who work it from bands to booths! The benefit was wonderful but there was a problem with the number of events in the community during the weekend! The participation was down because so many other things that were happening at that same time. We as bikers try to support so many great events. That’s one of the noble qualities of bikers. And, personal thanks from me to Bikers For Bikers Foundation for organizing and making the weekend possible for us all at a minimal cost! Anyone who rides knows someone that has been injured or even killed by others riding in cages (some texting, others drinking and still more just not paying attention to the road.) 8th Annual Carolina Faith Rider’s Bike Day

By: Wally Wersching Every year, the Carolina Faith Riders make a special day just for bikers. It’s a day of family fun including a bike show, a cornhole tournament, bike games, free food, and live music. It all starts at about 10AM, and ends at about 3PM. It’s always a fun day with renewed friendships along with the making of new friends. I had been to a few Bike Days in the past, and the atmosphere has always been friendly no matter who the bikers are or how many show up. The CFR are a great group, and always have the best intentions in everything they do. I arrived at the event on Mill Street in Forest City, NC at about 11AM. I went into the back of the event, and parked in a small lot with a group of Harleys, and Harley wannabes. “Miss Vickie” was the only Victory in the lot. I walked up the street, and visited with a few friends along the way. I learned that one of the Carolina Faith Riders was in a wheel chair. Her husband bought her a more powerful (but not any heavier) bike. She spun the rear tire when she was pulling it in their bike shed, and dropped it. She broke her left ankle. It always hurts to see a friend get hurt on their bike. I walked over to the bike show, and took a few pictures of the bikes in the show. There were some nice bikes and some unusual ones, too. I especially like the fact that there were two Victory motorcycles in the show. One was a Kingpin like “Miss Vickie”. There was a line of small booths

where many other biker ministries were set up. I recognized a few friends. The “Three 16 Band” sounded good, and I could smell the food. There was a long line for the food, and I heard that it was delicious (as always). I asked for a bottle of water, and I thought that the guy was going to dive in the washtub to get me the coldest bottle from the bottom of the tub. That ice water felt so good on such a hot day that he really enjoyed handing out the cold water bottles. They were getting ready to play the cornhole tournament in a grassy area next to the street. It was a very festive occasion. I was glad that I came, and will definitely come again next year. As I was leaving, I realized that I was across the street from the Rutherford County Farm Museum. The Museum is located at 240 Depot Street in Forest City, and is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10AM to 3PM. I had to stop in, and visit with Wilbur. He’s turning 91 later this year. He’s a very interesting old man who still remembers the history he has lived as a US navy pilot during WWII. I’d hate to see what happens to his museum after he’s gone. Stop in, and visit with him. He’s worth the trip. You can call him at 828-248-1248. When I got home, Cindy and I went out for lunch. It was a great way to spend a Saturday, and I hope that next Saturday will be as much fun.

The Dad And McGoo Celebration Of Life By: Everette “EZ” Short It’s not often that we all get together on a run that combines joy and sorrow, while we wrestle with the loss of loved ones in a celebration of life, family, friends, and good times with laughter and joy, instead of tears. But we did it on Saturday, September 10th at the Kevin “Dad” Brosnan and Paul “McGoo” McGoogan Celebration of Life. The day was hot and the wind was shy, but that didn’t stop about 200 plus bikes from showing up to honor these two great men on Saturday, starting at the The City Line Saloon. When kickstands went up at noon, traffic stopped on Kings Highway and we headed south to swarm into The Inlet Cafe. The new owners had no idea what to expect or how many of us there would be. It took a while to get a drink, but hats off to the bartenders for not losing their cool over the hundreds of sweaty bodies pressing against the bar and spilling out into the road in Murrells Inlet. In no time, we were running, full throttle, to Patty’s Dew Drop Inn, which we immediately overwhelmed. Even when packed, Patty and all her minions make everyone feel at home and why not, since we’re all family there. Next it was time to visit Dog House Donny’s Saloon back in Myrtle Beach, for a good swig, some cold ones and a few tears around the wishing well. I love the staff at The Dog House and they know how to handle a crowd. The Dogfather himself was even present as master of festivities and the pouring of massive Grandma shots. Though there were some tears, there was a lot of love in the house. Then it was time to take over Barnacle Bills in downtown Myrtle Beach proper. The tourists get nervous and the constables get leery when we spill into the streets, but we’re a good natured crowd, so they kept their distance and we all behaved, before heading back south to The City Line Saloon for a massive spread of food and remembrances of those we will never forget. Kevin (Dad) Brosnan was unmistakable for his hyena laugh that could be heard across the top of the roar at any event and I swear I heard his laugh more than once on that day. Dad served in the US Navy and had lost a leg to diabetes in recent times. That never stopped him from riding his Harley and someone had decorated his prosthetic limb with flowers and

adornments, like a flower vase or some kind of trophy. Kevin would’ve loved it, since he always had a fantastic sense of humor and that unmistakable laugh. McGoo was always quiet and was loved by everyone. Even though he was very sick, you would’ve never known it if you sat next to him. McGoo’s wife, Cheryl McCoogan, and Dad’s son, Keith Brosnan, were with us throughout the day and they are both wonderful people that never talk about whatever is bothering them. Cheryl always has a kind word and a gentle smile. Keith carries the tradition of cool with him, just like his dad. In the end, both of these men were never down, and always made you feel like everything was going to be OK. We will miss them for as long as we live and it was good to give them a beautiful, if not blazing hot, day to say how much we loved them both. The proceeds from the run went to The Veterans Welcome Home And Resource Center in Little River and I am sure that we made both of them proud. If you want to see pictures from that day, go to www. Some would ask me how they died. I would tell you how they lived and they lived well. They were loved and they will always be missed. I am reminded of Pink Floyd’s “Wish you were here...” when I think of them. “How I wish, How I wish you were here.” And, do not doubt, they were.

8.6 Million Motorcyclists Vote David “Double D” Devereaux 8/23/2016 www.motorcycleprofilingproject.com/voting-power-motorcyclists As we approach national elections in November, why is the opinion of the motorcycling community so important? The answer is simple. Motorcyclists represent a massive and powerful voting block with the ability to sway national elections. The vast majority of this demographic are registered and active voters. According to the National Motorcycle Profiling Survey 2015-16 (NMPS), 86% of motorcyclists have voted in a national election within the last 10 years. The American Motorcycle Association estimates that there are 10,000,000 registered motorcyclists in America. That means motorcyclists comprise nearly 7% of the active voting population. Many elections are decided by a smaller margin, including the 2012 presidential election. Elected officials would be wise to take note that issues of discrimination and profiling are among motorcyclists greatest concerns. 86% of Motorcyclists (8.6 Million) Vote The NMPS shows that the vast majority of motorcyclists are active voters and participate in US elections. According to Creative Research Systems, the NMPS, with 5,000 participants, has a 99% reliability rating and a margin of error of 1.4%. 86% of 10,000,000 registered motorcyclists in America is 8.6 million motorcyclists that are active voters in the United States. Motorcyclists Comprise 7% of Active Voters, Enough To Sway Elections According to The Center for the Study of the American Electorate, 127,000,000 individuals voted in the national elections in 2012. Using the last national election as a benchmark, 8.6 million voters represents almost 7% of the active voting population. And 7% is large enough to impact the outcome of many national elections. Consider the last race for President. Obama received about 5 million more votes than Romney. Motorcyclists could cover that difference with 3.5 million votes to spare. In addition to the presidential race, a total of 469 seats in the U.S. Congress (34 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election on November 8, 2016. A total of 1,210 (61.4%) of the country’s 1,972 state senate seats and 4,710 (87.0%) of the country’s 5,411 state house seats are up for a vote as well. Altogether, 5,920 (80.2%) of the country’s 7,383 state legislative seats are up for election during the presidential election year. Motorcyclists can have a dramatic impact on the upcoming election. And elected officials can help secure the motorcycle vote by listening and responding to the legislative demands of the community. What Issues Do Motorcyclists Care About? Aside from traditional issues like safety and helmet choice, the NMPS 2015-16 suggests that most motorcyclists are very concerned with police accountability, discrimination, and profiling. 50% of motorcyclists surveyed have been unjustifiably stopped while riding their motorcycles, which translates to 5 million Americans. Legislative demands being made by motorcycle rights organizations echo these findings. Many states are following Washington and Maryland’s lead, the only states with laws addressing the issue, pursuing legislation at the state level. There is also a national coalition of motorcycle organizations that have secured sponsorship for H. Res. 831, which calls for states to implement anti-motorcycle profiling laws. The Motorcycle

Conclusions If politicians realized the impact motorcyclists had on elections in the US, then policies protecting motorcyclists would materialize more rapidly. The 9/11 Memorial At The Beach WE REMEMBER If you’re reading this, then you probably remember exactly where you were and what you were doing at 8:45AM on that Tuesday morning of September 11, 2001, when the first plane struck the twin towers in New York City. Now, 15 years later, some seem to have forgotten the horror, tragedy, and helplessness we all felt on that day and for some time after. It turns out, in the Myrtle Beach area, over 1500 people and over 500 mounted riders have not forgotten that day at all. On Sunday, September 11th of this year, around noon, we were ready, set, and assembled at Myrtle Beach HarleyDavidson to ride to the 9/11 Memorial Service being held at Broadway At The Beach. Let me tell you that it is impressive to see the back lot, the side lots, the front lots and the parking lots across the street full of bikes waiting to roll for a reason. There’s a lot of talk in the media about division, but there was no division in this crowd of red-blooded Americans on that day. Just before takeoff, Marlissa wonderfully sang the National Anthem, with not one person sitting down, or taking a knee, I might add. Then we paused for a powerful moment of prayer, without anyone protesting anything or needing a prayer rug, and in the blink of a teary eye, it was down the road we went in a thunderous roar to meet in the 9/11 Memorial Gardens on the edge of Broadway At The Beach. In a ground pounding parade rolling behind a big green propane fueling tanker and a really cool classic red fire truck, it took over 15 minutes for the line of bikes to enter Broadway At The Beach. As the parade came in, the Myrtle Beach Pipe Band set off the scene with their deep pounding bass drums, while the bagpipes were singing out loud above the massive roar of a seemingly endless line of steel horses. In case you didn’t know, Broadway At The Beach has a Twin Towers Memorial Garden on the North end of the facility next to 29th Avenue North, that is complete with representations of the twin towers in a fountain and an actual bent and burnt girder from the towers, mounted on a stone pedestal for all to see and touch. I want to send out big hand claps for a job well done to Emily for singing the National Anthem with all she had, to Roger

Davis for his rousing words and to all the CVMA, as well as every policeman, fireman, EMT, and biker who ran ahead to clear the way for the rest of us that day. And I want to put out a JOB WELL DONE to EVERYONE at Myrtle Beach HarleyDavidson for organizing and hosting such a powerful gathering. Thank you all for your service. I have to add that not one elected official or any news media showed up to officiate or televise this event. We were on our own. The speeches were all well presented and the event went by quickly, but I could see that most of us were mentally and emotionally somewhere else. I was thinking of how do you deal with the end of life, happening in slow motion, when it’s taken from you for no reason. I thought about those who became so hopelessly overwhelmed that they threw themselves out of shattered windows in the tower. I was wondering how many lives were affected by each of the 2,997 souls that perished that day, 15 years ago. I remembered how, on that day, and for a good while after, we realized that “We The People” were America’s greatest asset. For such a horrendous event, we suddenly reached out to those around us to grasp that our friends, family, and even strangers all came together as Americans in a time of crisis. Even in the midst of tears and sadness, most of us became proud to say, “I AM AN AMERICAN.” I pray we all, one day, realize how special it is to BE AN AMERICAN. I think a lot of us already do. Thank you, one and all, for renewing your commitment that WE WILL NEVER FORGET. And if you really feel American, register to vote and make sure you vote. It’s not enough to say, “Yeah, I’m gonna vote.” You gotta do it!

CWC ABATE’s 3rd Annual Sweaty Seat Run By: Kickstart & Donut Saturday, August 27, was a great day for the Cayce West Columbia ABATE riders and friends. We all meet at Animal’s for the big ride that we all were waiting for. This was a “don’t lose your marbles” event, where you play a marble game at every stop. Now don’t ask how we played, but it was not the way you think. We started registration at 11 and KSU at 12. So the story goes like this - we headed out to Tommy’s Country Bar to play with our marbles, and along the way we lost Charles AKA Cowboy not going into details that his clutch went out, wild man! So we headed out to the country and packed the house at Archie’s Shack where we then played with our marbles once more and got to see Archie and use his out house. So we hit the black top to T & D’s in Pelion to play marbles again. Once we got there Fred Ermel had hit the jackpot sometime the week before and won and was on a big spending spree and got everyone a beverage of choice at this stop. Thank you ole buddy, Fred Ermel. So as the time goes by we went to visit RPM Cycles to play damn marbles again, but we also had a special drawing for a $700 gift certificate that Neil Knitz donated. Thomas Penn was the winner. Thanks, Neil Knitz. You the man, and thanks for all the free food and drinks. We needed that. So it was time to go play with our marbles at Anthony’s Bar and see our fine peeps there. The day just keeps getting better with so much excitement going on its hard to keep up with all the details and the whole story, but I’m making sure I’m covering the most important parts, (I hope, lol) while I’m having a sweaty seat ride. make our way to the BOL AKA the Bar Of Lexington to jiggle or marbles, I thinks I lost mine somewhere on the way. We had prizes and drawings all day along the way, but the big one was only a few minutes away. The Tug Of War was on! We had on the winning team Kickstart, Chuck’s son, Jake (lol, I had to say that) Chuck Leonard, and our newest ABATE member, Tubs to make it a winner. Thanks to our competition Mark, Clint, Mickey and Kenny. Y’all did a good job men, but the Real McCoys pulled it off. Thanks to all that made this a successful day. The 6th Annual Shriners Children’s Hospital Benefit And Dice Roll Ride

By: Lloyd Luquer On August 27th, I participated in a very special and rewarding event called The 6th Annual Shriners Children’s Hospital Benefit And Dice Roll Ride. All told there were 56 bikes all lined up and ready to roll out of Chunk’s Hawg Haven at the Motorcycle Park next to Harley-Davidson of Greensboro. The love and support was overwhelming to say the least. But, before I get into the day’s events I wanted to explain a little bit about how this benefit and ride came to be and what it does. Shriners have over 22 locations which specialize in providing première health care for thousands of children 18 years and younger with orthopedic Open @ Noon conditions, severe Everyday! burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and palate all at no cost to the child and family. tell you about. But wait, there’s more. The thing that stands out most is what I learned from Karen Hatchets, the mother of a Shriners patient who also organizes this annual event. She has a son named Blake Hall who was born with limb deficiencies, which would require amputations. Blake’s first steps as a young child were taken wearing prosthetics. Not only did Shriners provide the surgery and all medical care at no cost but they also provided him with prosthetics. But guess what? There’s even more. This is what makes me proud and gives me faith in our youth. Six years ago Karen Hatchets’ son, Blake needed a senior project for high school and decided to do a ride / benefit for Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, SC to give back and help other children in need. Now that just fascinates me that this young man wanted to give back in such a huge way. And so my friends, thus the 6th Annual Shriners Children’s Hospital Benefit And Dice Roll Ride Benefit came into being. I wouldn’t be giving this story any justice if I didn’t state the above. So now come the day’s events. What can I say when there’s so much to cover? I can’t think of any words to properly describe the love and fellowship that was just simply in the air, on the ride, during the entire benefit. Many people rode, supported and sponsored this event. The entertainment by Chasing Fame was terrific. Check these guys out sometime. Thanks to Bob Karney Law Firm for being present during registration and all the giveaways. You always know you can count on Bob if you have a biker case. Also a shout out to Ironhorse Law for their giveaways. So we left Chunk’s

and headed out on I-40 to Double D’s Burn out Saloon. If you’ve never been there, trust me, Missy and David always do things up right as they did this day. After everyone had rolled their dice and an awesome time spent at DD’s then it was on to our next stop. So onward we continued to JR’s Corner Tavern. Man, oh man, do we all have great memories of this place! JR’s absolutely welcomed all the riders and even provided food! Make certain you stop in and wet you whistle at JR’s. As we continued our ride back to Chunk’s Hawg Haven we encountered a slight refreshing rain, but it was very welcomed, as were riding in August heat in the Carolinas. Once back at Chunk’s, things REALLY took off, the music was terrific and the food was absolutely to die for. It was provided by hard working and dedicated skills of Carol N Butch Meddlers and all who helped them serve their tasty BBQ. As always, many people work very hard on the sidelines to make this annual event fall into place and their enthusiasm is ever so radiant. I could

go on and on naming all who worked their tails off to pull this annual event off. Every single thing was perfectly presented. The auction was a HUGE success and cudo’s to David from DD’s for being the auctioneer. He did great job. And so it goes, the rain decided to cut loose and I mean the bottom really dropped out. Everyone accepted it like true bikers and supporters. It was a terrific event with patients from Shriners and staff and everyone walked away or should I say rode away with some awesome merchandise. But most of all, a great feeling of love and joy knowing a young man whom started this as a Senior project has truly given back. Way to go Blake and Karen Hatchets. If you know a child or family who needs orthopedic or burn care, please contact your local Shriners Club. One thing is certain; I’ll be, God willing, at the 7th Annual Shriners Children’s Hospital Benefit And Dice Roll ride. 11th Annual Marion Moose Riders Bike Show By: Wally Wersching A “Marion Moose Rider” is not a guy riding around Marion, NC on a moose. He (or she) is part of the motorcycle riding group of Marion Moose Lodge #1705, which is part of the Loyal Order of Moose – a fraternal organization whose principle philanthropic endeavors are Mooseheart, a city for children in need, located forty miles west of Chicago, and Moosehaven, a retirement community for senior members, located on the banks of the St. Johns River in Orange Park, FL. On Saturday September 3rd, the Marion Moose Riders held a biker get-together at the Marion Moose Family Center next to Lake James. I went last year, and enjoyed myself so I wanted to go again this year. The website said that it would all start with breakfast at 9AM, and the bike show registration would start at 10AM. There would be bike games all through the day, with door prizes, and even a “burnout pit”. A burnout pit is a place where bikers can spin their rear wheel creating clouds of smoke and noise. They can also do a lot of damage to their bikes. It’s really not a good activity if you like your bike – but it looks and sounds “cool”. My plan was to go to Moondoggy’s Classic Diner, have lunch, and then ride over to the Moose Lodge. I pulled into the Moondoggy’s parking lot just before 11AM. I gave Sam (the owner) copies of the latest Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for his biker customers. I ordered one of their delicious grilled cheese sandwiches with only a few fries. I was still full from breakfast so I wanted to eat light. I left before the lunch crowd arrived, and headed back into town. On the east side of Marion, I followed the signs to the Moose Family Center. Because I wasn’t entering “Miss Vickie” in the show, I parked on the side away from the show bikes. I heard DJ “Rick” playing some great tunes all day. It was just loud enough to hear and enjoy without making everybody yell to be heard over the music. I walked around, and took a lot of pictures. There were some interesting bikes in the show. I walked along the vendor booths, and there was a little of everything. There were mostly accessory tents, but no bike parts. Then it was noon, and the food was being served. Almost instantly, a line formed. The food smelled good, and from what I could see in the Styrofoam containers, the food looked good, too. Then a Polaris Slingshot, and a VW Trike pulling a trailer rolled into the show. They both drew a crowd. The Slingshot looked stock but it had a canvas top. It didn’t keep the occupants dry when it rained but it did keep the hot sun off their

heads. I talked with the owner. He had driven it all the way to Utah earlier in the summer. The VW Trike was very interesting with panels of aluminum diamond-plate, and chrome girly models like the kind that would be on a custom semi-tractor. It was very well done. It also drew crowd. As I was standing there admiring the trike, an unusual sight rolled in. It was a solid gold custom bike with a very large front wheel painted with Las Vegas’ cards, and roulette wheels theme. I watched as he lowered the bike to the ground using his air suspension (no kickstand). He opened one of the saddlebags remotely, and took something out. He had just ridden in from Winston-Salem, NC (about a two-hour ride). As he walked over to register in the show, a huge crowd surrounded his bike. It was truly a custom bike. The very large front wheel and beautiful graphics would make his bike stand out no matter where he went. This year the Moose Riders were raffling off a 2002 Yamaha Star Classic. I didn’t need another bike but I bought a raffle ticket anyway. It was for a good cause – The Needy Kids Christmas Fund. At about 12:45, I headed back home. As I left, there was a line of bikes pulling into the event. I missed the Burnout Pit, and the evening music after the show. Maybe next year I’ll stay longer. It was an enjoyable ride home. I will definitely go again next year. It was fun, and a great way to spend a Saturday.

Smokin’ H-D Ladies’ Garage Party

By: Caroline On August 30th, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson hosted one of several Ladies’ Garage Parties that they have throughout the year. One aspect of their event is they are dedicated to making sure that women riders have a safe, positive experience no matter what kind of bike you ride. They welcome women riders at all levels and even if you only want to ride as a passenger. They offer something for everyone. The evening starts out with food and beverages and a chance for the ladies to meet each other. General Manager, Ray Perry has each of the ladies to tell a little bit about themselves and then introduces the rest of the staff, Bill Dotson, Marketing Director, and Anthony, Web Specialist. Parts Manager, Eric and Bryan with the Service Team were pelted with questions from the guests. Jan, the MotorClothes manager gave tips on how to incorporate style with safety apparel. Of course, the highlight of the night was getting to try out the Harley-Davidson® JUMPSTART™ Rider Experience. Several of the ladies who have never ridden enjoyed the experience. Oh, and did I mention door prizes? That is another highlight of the evening. I enjoyed meeting other women who share the same love of riding. Smokin’ H-D recognizes that the female market has explod-

ed in the past decade and has tailored their customer service to reflect the needs of women riders regardless of their experience or what bike they ride. Alongside the vendors, food and kids activities at the event there was also a poker run that left from Wilmington, rode out to Pender County and ended at the event in Wilmington. Jacey Rogers started the “Kreashenz Krush” benefit four years ago incorporating an “I Love Lucy” inspired grape stomp and family-friendly activities into a day of fun and charity. Her mother went through cancer, and she knows everyone has had someone they love or know that has dealt with cancer. Both Rogers and her Mother love the I Love Lucy episode with the grape stomp and she wanted to do more than just market her business when she opened her doors 4 years ago, she wanted to do some good. And she has done A LOT of good since. She chose the Jedrey Family Foundation as the ongoing beneficiary. The mission of the Jedrey Family Foundation is to help ease the financial burden of local cancer patients who are experiencing difficulties in paying their medical bills or other essentials and obligations they may have. This year’s “Krush” was held at Kreashenz Salon at 3145 Wrightsville Avenue in Wilmington, NC. Over the past three years of joining with the Jedrey Foundation, they have raised $9,500 and have an average of about 200 attendees and continue to hope for more each year. This year the benefit raised $2,900 bringing the total to $12,400! Overall this was and is an absolutely must attend, mark it on your calendar, don’t miss it poker run and event! 14th Annual Catawba County Shriners Poker Run

Story and photo by Alan Dockery What a nice September day we had to ride on the 14th Annual Catawba County Shrine Club’s Poker Run. I’ve been on all 14 of those rides for a great cause. Supporting the Oasis Shrine Temple, the ride raises money for Shriners Children’s Hospitals. Almost 200 people that Sunday afternoon raised about $10,000 for the Shriners. As folks rolled in from the afternoon ride, the Newton, NC, Shrine Club parking lot filled with bikers. While folks turned in their hands, the Shriners served all the riders and volunteers some real good BBQ and fixins. Outside DJ “Doc Hollywood” Crump entertained folks. Once we finished eating, it was time to go outside for some door prizes and to announce the winners. Dennis Grigg coordinated the event and said, “Thank you to everyone who showed up to ride and the folks who helped put it on. Thanks also to the vendors and local businesses who donated door prizes and to the sponsors who donated money for spots on our T-Shirts. And we appreciate the poker run stop hosts Blue Ridge H-D, Sons Of The South, Johnny’s Mexican American Bar, Twin Oaks, Sasha’s On The Lake and Ryan’s Sports Bar.

Sam Moore won $500 for the best hand. A $250 prize went to Angie Griffin for the second best hand. Sons Of The South staff won $150 for third best hand and $100 went to Mike Dyson for worst hand.

2017 Harley-Davidson Road King Test

By: Johnny Reb I have been so busy trying to get to all of my great clients for The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine that when I received a call from Chris Riley at Hometown Harley to test the new 2017 Harley-Davidson Road King, I jumped at it! The very first thing that I took in when I saw the new Road King was of course that muscled up 107 Milwaukee 8. What a good-looking engine! Some people are already calling it the new “knuckle”, because of the obvious fist looking heads. The new heads are not just looks alone, they have been improved greatly. They have 4 valves per cylinder for better breathing and exhaust. Dual spark plugs are a huge improvement for better spark and a much smoother idle. If that is not enough for all you gear heads out there, it has an oil cooler, which is routed through the heads for better oil temps. This was just a first impression of the looks of the engine, but once you fire this beast up you can tell there is much more going on with this motorcycle. Guy Stocks, one of the fine salesmen at Hometown Harley, fired her up and rode it out of the store and put some gas in

it for me. He then went over some of the finer points that are new for ‘17. It was a hot day so I threw my vest in the one handed opening saddlebags. That doesn’t sound like much, but after having to mess with buckles and straps on my ‘08 Road King, it was a nice change. I threw a leg over and settled into a very comfortable saddle, another huge improvement over the seat on The WASP. I am six foot one and the seating position was very comfortable. They have lowered the over all height of the bike and the seat was noticeably lower. My only complaint was my knees were higher than I am used to, but I am sure it would be natural after a couple of days riding. If you are vertically challenged you will have no problem sitting flat-footed on this bike. Ok, now for the good stuff, I fired that bad boy up and wow! That had to be the smoothest running Harley-Davidson engine I have ever heard or felt. I pulled in the clutch and immediately felt the difference of the hydraulic clutch, a first for the Road King. As I pulled out and took a right on RT11 towards Ayden, the transmission was smooth and quiet as I wound it up through the six-speed gearbox. No audible “clunk” or noise was heard. It was a very smooth shifting transmission. Running it up to 60 mph, the Harley smooth and has a very nice exhaust note, even running through the stock exhaust. The Motor Company re routed the rear header for a better sound but even more important, it has noticeably reduced the heat on you leg and butt. Heading down main street of Ayden, the road is just terrible with pot holes and bumps, the Road King took it all in stride, absorbing the awful road conditions.

As I headed back to Hometown Harley Davidson, the thought crossed my mind, I will just ride it back home to Snow Hill and they can bring the paper work and I could make this one mine! With a price of just over 21 grand, I think it has got to be one of the best deals on a touring bike out there! This one had a beautiful blue and silver paint job, but if you want to spend a little less vivid black will drop the price even lower. Before I close this out, one more observation. In 6th gear the 120lbs of torque was very evident. There was no need to drop a gear to pass a car. Just twist the wick and she just squats down and eats up the road. All in all, the single cam 107 Milwaukee 8 is a fantastic motor. So my advice is to go to Hometown Harley-Davidson, talk to the great guys in sales and take possession of your new Harley today! It would be very interesting to do a side-by-side comparison with the new Indian and Victory and this new Harley. They sure will have to bring their “A” game to compete with this new Harley. The Motor Company has really stepped it up and I think this will really set them apart from the other manufacturers out there. This is just my observation and I am SURE there are those out there who disagree with my opinion that this is one of the finest motorcycles to hit the street in a long time. My advice is to check it out for yourself and do your homework. You will see this is a heck of a bike.

By: Teresa Goble On March 2, 2016. Cody Watts and Richelle Lail were shot outside their workplace in Hickory, NC. Richelle died on scene and Cody passed away 2 days later. Richelle left behind 2 small children and Cody left behind a young son, so on September 10, 2016. The Lone Eagle Riding Club sponsored a benefit “Ride For The Children” survivors of domestic violence. Our ride began with a 9:30am sign up at Blue Ridge HarleyDavidson. With 3 more stops before our final destination the temps were already well into the 90’s, but that wasn’t t going to stop us from our goal. We arrived at our last stop, John’s Tavern at 2:30 to enjoy BBQ, door prizes, a silent auction and live music. With the help of many volunteers, countless donations, and the support of hundreds of people, motorcycle riders and car riders alike we were able to present a check in the amount of $7,280.50 to the family’s of Cody Watts and Richelle Lail. The final actual count was $7,411. On behalf of the Lone Eagle Riding Club we would like to thank Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson, VFW Lincolnton, Hill Top Sports Bar, The Hickory Riding Club, John’s Tavern, Double D Catering, Maple Springs and every single person that volunteered and donated their time and money for thus cause. Without any of you, none of this would have been possible. Domestic violence can’t be stopped by just one, but together as a group we can create awareness. It’s not just an adult issue; the children become the true survivors of domestic violence.

Claire Wilson Benefit Ride

By: Johnny Reb On the morning of September 10th, I loaded up the WASP and headed to New River Harley-Davidson for the Claire Wilson Benefit Ride. It was a beautiful morning for the 70-mile ride and as the miles flew by I was thinking just how great it is to ride these country roads. However, the country roads soon gave way to the city traffic of Jacksonville, NC. After just a couple miles I was pulling into a very modern looking New River Harley-Davidson. In the parking lot tents were set up and the New River HOG Chapter was serving breakfast. A $5 donation got you one heck of a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and sausage! I walked past a line of new Harleys just waiting for a new owner to throw a leg over them, and entered the showroom. Brother, the only way to describe it was controlled chaos! Riders coming in and signing up for the ride, all trying to get a chance to talk to Claire and then flying out of there to start the ride! The Shriners were also running their poker run at the same time and when that was finished they were joining the ride for Claire. The coordinator for New River HD, was a very nice young lady named Koral. She directed me to talk to Dan Grace, a member of the 13 Rebels MC. As I tried to get the lowdown on Claire’s story, it was just crazy crowded in there, so I hope I have got this all as accurate as possible! On the 22nd of July, Claire was riding in right hand lane of a 4 lane highway when a cage going the opposite direction made a U-turn and hit Claire. Her left leg was fractured in two places and the skin was, well let’s just say torn very, very badly. The doctors tried puting her busted up leg

back together, but the end result was her leg had to be amputated below the knee. Now, that is of course devastating to a young woman, but to make matters worse, Claire was just finishing up her training as a CDL operator and was already hired as a driver as soon as she finished up her last few days of school. Well, you are not going to keep a good person like Claire down! This is a lady who did 20 years in the Navy and knows what its like to overcome adversity! She has her own business called Creations By Claire, and makes custom welding caps, so you rod burners out there, if you want a custom welding cap get a hold of Claire by dropping her an email, at clarita.wilson@gmail. com. All the proceeds of this day was, of course, given to Claire, but Koral made a command decision and said lets do this every year as close to the anniversary of Claire’s accident with proceeds going to a charity hat deals with prosthetics for amputees. Very good idea! Now I am going to list the MCs that I saw there and were also helping out with coordination. 13 Rebels MC, Tuckahoe MC, Leathernecks MC, (who gave up their hot dog Saturday to support Claire), American Infidels MC, Iron Order MC, and New River HOG Chapter, as always if I missed anybody no disrespect intended. A Celebration Of Bigun Harris This is the hardest article that I have had to write since starting with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. I was going to call this article “Rest In Peace Bigun Harris”, but no, this has got to be called “A Celebration Of Bigun Harris.” I’m so afraid that I cannot do justice to honor this man the way he should be, but I’m going to try and I’m going to do the best I can. I wish I had known Bigun personally, but I only met him one time and that was when I was covering his benefit at Hometown Harley. So this is what I decided to do. I went for a ride on my Harley and I came back home and poured a nice big shot of Gentleman Jack and now I’m going to start this. Yesterday, I attended a funeral for a man who seemed bigger than this old world could contain. His devoted wife, Alana, and their daughters, Mackenzy and Morrigan, and his loving family were there. His Tuscarora MC Brothers were pallbearers and provided love and support for the family. In all my 51 years on this planet, never have I ever seen as many people come out to pay respect to a brother as I saw on Wednesday, August 31st. If the amount of people at a man’s funeral is the gauge of one’s life, then brother, all I can say is, Bigun, you were truly loved and respected. I will try to list all the MCs that I can recall paying their respects. Hometown Harley shut their doors at 1300 so all their employees could attend. Are y’all seeing what I am getting at? This man was loved. This is the nuts and bolts of the story that y’all expect, who was there and how much Bigun was loved, but I really want to convey something much deeper. After seeing this amount of love and respect for Bigun, I feel cheated that I didn’t get the chance to know him and his family better. I think his brothers in Tuscarora MC know what I am trying to get at. Yeah, there were probably 300 people there and 150 or so bikes, but there was so much more. Things that you can’t grab a hold of, things you hope that you can someday. Love was surely there and, of course, a lot of good stories, but daggone, just for a minute, I sure thought I saw Bigun with a big old grin and getting ready to throw a leg over his scoot and with the Lord on his left, going for a big old ride! Remembering Don Tilley Story and photo by Alan Dockery Some men become our heroes and legends. We honor and remember them for years. It’s been two years since Don died in a motorcycle crash on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The end of August, hundreds of us gathered at Tilley Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC, to remember Don Tilley. Don Tilley was one of my heroes from the time I first started riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and paying attention to racing. He wasn’t the rider going for the wins, but the owner, builder, and tuner who put lots of riders in the winner’s circle. I remember getting to know him while covering Harley’s efforts in Superbike road racing with the VR-1000 and at the dragstrip. Don put Harleys on many different types of racetracks. In the 1950s and 1960s he raced stock cars, winning on the local tracks. He moved up to NASCAR’s Grand National Circuit running several races, including Daytona. Don even worked

for Richard Petty before he and Robinette opened Tilley Harley-Davidson dealership in Statesville in 1972. Fast motorcycles made him a legend. His riders won lots of races and championships for many years. Occasionally Don would roll some of his race bikes out for display at the dealership during events. It always brought a smile to my face to see guys checking out the race machines, like the famous Lucifer’s Hammer, and telling stories about watching them in action. This was a mellow day. We hung out at Tilley H-D and told stories about Don. They had hot dogs fresh off the grill and acoustic music outside. In the dealership there were some NASCAR drivers and crewmembers that rode with Don for many years. As the crowd thinned and people started riding off, we gathered with Robinette Tilley for photos and to tell her how much we love her and pray for her continuing recovery. “It was so great to see old and new friends and customers,” Robinette said. “Thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting Tilley Harley-Davidson and remembering Don.”

By: Wally Wersching The American Military’s deadliest battleground isn’t some remote stretch of desert in a foreign land. It’s here at home. Every day, 22 American combat veterans commit suicide as a result of untreated or improperly treated Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries. That’s 8,000 a year - more casualties annually than our armed services have seen on the battlefield since the Korean War. Mission 22 is encouraging awareness, and soliciting funds toward two goals. First, they want to expand their offerings of resources for veterans’ families and communities to save the 22 veterans who might otherwise take their own lives each day this year. Secondly, they want to place a memorial in Washington DC to memorialize these home front victims of wars, who gave their lives for their country just as surely as did those killed in action. On Saturday, September 10th, a local group of concerned bikers got together to form an Awareness Ride in support of Mission 22. Their slogan was “Remembering Those Who Could Not Forget”. Chris Bucy, a USMC veteran, organized it. We were to meet at the old Kmart parking lot in Spindale, NC then ride as a group to Blue Ridge H-D in Hickory, NC for food, music, and door prizes. Chris had antici-

pated about 100 bikers but only about 30 actually showed up for the ride. I arrived about 10AM to an almost empty parking lot. As we waited for the 11AM departure time, other bikers came rolling in. It was good to see some old friends. I made a few new ones, too. It’s always good to get together for a good cause. This time, it was a great cause – our veterans - young men and women who were willing to serve, and die to protect us. They survived combat to be stricken here at home. What a waste! Many of us veterans and civilians can’t understand why they are committing suicide at such an alarming rate. We weren’t there with them in combat. We don’t have the terrible nightmares. We can only imagine, and our imaginations don’t even come close to what they are experiencing. We need to support this cause to expand the resources to save these vets. The memorial will come later. Bull City Rumble 12

By: Mark Infield The Bull City Rumble is held on Labor Day Weekend on Main Street in the Brightleaf District of Durham, NC. This is where ornate brick buildings that used to house the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company have been turned into restaurants and shops. It doesn’t hurt that the venue is on the edge of the Duke University campus and home to several bars and restaurants, either. Even though these are elements that contribute to the coolness of this event, the main attraction is the bikes that line both sides of the street. Ton Up NC puts on the event. The Official Ton Up Charter states that the philosophy of the club is that it was founded on the idea that classic bikes were built to be ridden and not just polished and stared at. It is also based on the Rocker culture of England in the 1960’s, which was strongly influenced by American outlaw biker culture of the 1950’s and the movie The Wild One. It goes on to say, “It’s really all about hanging out with your mates, riding your bike to the café and rock-n-roll.” Their homepage (TonUp.com) also says you have to love a good pint and try to get the front wheel up on occasion. Maybe that’s why I enjoy this event so much. The street was lined with British, European, and Japanese motorcycles with some scooters (Mods) mixed in. It is very refreshing to see such a variety of different motorcycles in one place. This is truly a day for the motorcycle enthusiasts who are more than mere owners of a motorcycle. We stopped by the registration table and viewed all the stuff they had for sale. It only seemed right to go in the nearest bar, Social Games and Brews to sample some cold craft beer before we walked down the street to look at all the bikes. Along with those parked at the curb, others were being ridden in all afternoon. By the time we began our trek back up the street, we were tempted by the sandwich boards out side the restaurants to enter and eat. So we did. Shortly after that the bike show awards were given out. My wife, Julie, had been after me for several weeks to varnish the wooden seat on our toilet. Finally, I got around to doing it while Julie was out. After finishing, I left to take care of another matter before she returned. She came in and undressed to take a shower. That’s right, you guessed it. Before getting in the shower, she sat on the toilet. As she tried to stand up, she realized that the not-quite-dry epoxy paint had glued her to the toilet seat. About that time, I got home and realized her predicament. We both pushed and pulled without any success, except to cause her too much unnecessary pain. Finally, in desperation, I undid the toilet seat bolts. Julie wrapped a sheet around herself, and I drove her to the hospital emergency room. On the table, the ER Doctor bent her over into a position where he could study how to free her (Try to get a mental picture of this). Julie tried to lighten the embarrassment of it all by saying, “Well, Doctor, I’ll bet you’ve never seen anything like this before.” The Doctor replied, “Actually, I’ve seen lots of them before, I’ve just never seen one mounted and framed.” A little kid was out trick-or-treating on Halloween dressed as a pirate. He rang a house’s doorbell and a lady opened the door. “Oh, how cute! A little pirate! And where are your buccaneers?” she asked. The boy replied, “Under my buckin’ hat.” Reporter: “Excuse me, may I interview you?” Man: “Yes!” Reporter: “Name?” Man: “Abdul Al-Rhazim.” Reporter: “Sex?” Man: “Three to five times a week.” Reporter: “No, no! Disgusted, he asks the drunk, “Are you ready to find Jesus?” The drunk shouts, “Yes, oi am.” So the preacher grabs him by his shirt collar and dunks him in the water. He pulls him back up and asks, “Brother, have you found Jesus?” The drunk replies, “No, oi haven’t found Jesus!” The preacher, shocked at the answer, dunks him again but for a little longer. He again pulls him out of the water and asks, “Have you found Jesus, me brother?” The drunk answers, “No, oi haven’t found Jesus!” The preacher frowns and decides to dunk the drunk man again. This time the preacher holds him down for a good 30 or 40 seconds, and when he begins kicking his arms and legs about, he pulls him up. The preacher again asks the drunk, “For the love of God, man, have you found Jesus?” The drunk staggers upright, wipes his eyes, coughs up a bit of water, catches his breath, and says to the preacher, “Are you sure this is where he fell in?” An American tourist walks out of a Mexican train station when he notices he isn’t wearing his watch. A Mexican man is resting under a sombrero under a nearby tree. The American approaches the Mexican and asks, “Excuse me, do you know what time is?” The Mexican looks at the donkey, grabs its balls, and replies, “4:30.” The American asks, “How do you know that?” The Mexican replies, “Well you get a handful of the donkeys balls and lift them up so you can see that clock across the street.”

Honoring A Fallen Soldier By: Bill Gallaway The weekend of August 20, 2016 was a busy one for local Patriot Guard Riders. They gave their time to assist Flags For The Fallen with construction and presentation of a flagpole and an American Flag at the home of the parents of Cpt. Kimberly Nichole Hampton. On Jan 2, 2004, Cpt. Hampton was at the controls of her OH-57 Kiowa Warrior helicopter near Fallujah, El Anbar Province, Iraq. A major operation to isolate and destroy enemy forces was under way when Kimberly’s helicopter came under intense enemy fire and went down. Kimberly Hampton became the first female aviator lost in action in the history of all American military forces. She was also the first South Carolinian to die in the Iraq War. Kimberly attended Easley High School and continued her education at Furman University and Presbyterian College before joining the Army. She was an outstanding individual in all aspects of her short life. The Commander of Delta Troup, 12th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd

Airborne Division was taken from us at the age of 27. Today she would have been 40. Kimberly was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal and the Purple Heart for her service. Thank God for all the support and kindness reflected during this two day mission. For the Flag presentation there were 26 motorcycles present and yes, they did hear the rumble.

Camel City Bikefest By: Buzz and Caroline On September 10th, Biker Trash Nation, lead by Wayne Pinnix and Vandee Gilbert landed the biggest deal in WinstonSalem since RJR Tobacco rolled their first cigarette. The 1st time event blocked off Liberty St. to 6th St. (3 blocks) with custom bikes, live music, vendors, and all the bikers that could pile in and it was a huge success.

Bikes were rolling in as soon as 11am and it was steady rolling all day long. Event staff had their hands full directing the bikes into Sturgis style parking. Down on vendor row you could pick up get back whips, stainless steel jewelry, event tshirts, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines & coozies, and everyone’s favorite - ice cold beer! This event didn’t just warm up, it was HOT from the start. Hot bikes, hot women, and hot asphalt! The custom baggers dominated the bike show landscape and there was some real eye candy on display. There were big wheel baggers in all colors some dropped, some with awesome sound systems, all customized from top to bottom. It was a lot to take in. Like I said, this event was 0-100mph in a matter of minutes. The bands started up soon after the event opened and they were cranking out tunes for 12 hours! In between bands, Wayne Pinnix and his girlfriend Vandee Gilbert took the stage and gave away a ton of awesome giveaways that had been collected over the past few months. Around 4pm it was time for the bike show results. A ton of bikes show trophies were set up in front of the band stand and Radical Randy took the stage to announce the winners. One after another the winners claimed their hardware and got their picture taken (available on www.FullThrottleMagazine.com) with Ms. Baggerz! When the last trophy was given out, all the winners gathered for a group shot and Wayne thanked every-

one for coming out and promised a bigger and better rally next year. Personally I can see it getting bigger, but making it better is going to be a real challenge. The Camel City Bikefest continued into the night and most everyone stayed well after sun down for the main headliner, HedTrip, bike sounds competition, a fire dancer, and more biker fun.

A big thumbs up also goes to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson, Budweiser, Camel City BBQ Factory, Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, Baggers Saloon, and the Winston-Salem Jaycees who sponsored the event. I was very proud to see this well organized event happening in Winston-Salem. Folks that I ran into all weekend were talking about it! Knobbies Breakfast And Lake James By: Wally Wersching The “Knobbies” are a group of over 200 motorcycle enthusiasts. A small group of them meet every Sunday morning about 8am at the Timberwood Restaurant in Morganton, NC and then go for a daylong ride. They were originally the Knob Mountain Chapter of the BMW Motorcycle Owners Association, but now they welcome all kinds of bikes to their rides. They are a friendly and warm group of individuals. Last Sunday, I decided to take an early ride to eat breakfast with them. I left home about 7am heading north on Rte. 226. I took the shortcut through Belwood, NC, and stopped at the War Memorial to get a couple pictures of “Miss Vickie”. Afterwards, I continued to go north on Rte. 18 until I turned right onto Bethel Road. Bethel Road goes right to the Timberwood Restaurant. When I pulled into the Timberwood parking lot, I was surprised to see no motorcycles parked there. I was the first bike in the lot. For a minute or two, I wondered if they changed their location to another restaurant. I only go to breakfast about once a month. A lot can change in a month. I went inside, sat at the big table by the back wall, and waited. In a few minutes, one of the Knobbies sat with me. We talked for quite a while until more and more Knobbies came

in. Before long, the table was full, and everybody was laughing and talking – as friends do. After I finished eating, I said good-by, and headed out. I planned to go around Lake James before heading home. Lake James is a man-made lake built from 1917 to 1923 as a hydroelectric project, which still generates power today. It was named after tobacco tycoon James Buchannan Duke, and is the uppermost lake in the Catawba River system. There are many housing developments around the southern portion of the lake. The northern section has been kept natural. Lake James has many people boating, and fishing. There is the Bear Creek Marina and Restaurant on Lake James that has many activities near the waterfront. It might be a nice place to stop, and have some dinner. From the Timberwood Restaurant, I took I-40 west to exit 100 (Jamestown Road). I went north until I turned left onto Rte. 126. Rte. 126 is a pleasant road with many twists and turns as it travels through small communities. After a few miles, I turned to the right onto South Mountain Institute Road to go around the northern sections of the lake. At the “Dead End” sign, I turned left to go onto Lake James Road. After a few miles of wooded road, I stopped at another boat ramp – The Black Bear Access Area. The view wasn’t very scenic except for the Bear Creek Marina and Restaurant across the lake. It really is a very large place. It was relatively dead at that time of Sunday morning, but I would imagine that it would be full later in the day. I continued on Lake James Road until I turned right onto Hankins Road. I stayed on Hankins Road as it went through small sections of Marion, NC on its way to Rte. 226. I turned left onto Rte. 226, and was home within an hour. It was a great way to spend a Sunday morning.

Metcalfe Station By: Wally Wersching Sunday afternoon was beautiful with temps in the mid 80’s under cloudless blue skies. I had to take “Miss Vickie” for a ride. I had no I idea where I wanted to go but I knew I wanted to stay on the two-lane blacktops – no interstates or four-lanes. I realized that I hadn’t taken any pictures of “Miss Vickie” in front of the Metcalfe Station recently. It was the perfect time of day for some great shots so I stopped. It was open. There were a couple people walking around outside. One of the Lawndale members was there with his wife and he opened the building for me. It’s only open on Sundays from 2 – 4pm. It’s a great place to sit and talk history. The Metcalfe Station was a stop for the Lawndale Railway and Industrial Company between Lawndale and Shelby from 1899 to 1943. The railway served as a means for the mills in Lawndale to send their goods to Shelby and beyond. It also transported the mill workers to and from Shelby. It eventually became a Texaco gas station when the traffic on what is now Rt. 226 slowly turned from horse and carriage to cars and trucks. That must have been an interesting (but hard) time to live in and around Shelby. The Lawndale Historical Society maintains the Metcalfe Station. In the last couple years, they have added the water tower. It was donated to the museum in 2011, and recently restored. It adds even more to the little museum along with the bright red

boxcar. There’s a lot of history in that little building. I hadn’t been inside the building for a few years. Inside, I saw the model train along with the “Life” magazine train advertisement from the early 1940’s that I donated. They both seem to fit, and aid in the rooms’ atmosphere. Changes

Bros & Bro-ettes Who likes changes? Not many of us do. We like the ways things are in our own comfort zone. Our life is just like the seasons, fall, winter, spring, and summer. We all need a change. Some of us get so settled we get mad when things start to change. A lot of the times we are happy with the way our lives are going and don’t want to change, but the Lord wants to bless us and give us the things we need, not always what we want. In my own life there have been a lot of changes in the past 2 years. Some I didn’t like and made me mad and hurt, but the Lord has brought me back to where I need to be. I’m doing more ministry work and doing things with family and friends. It may not be as much as I would like, but maybe that’s my next season. You may think that you are at the end of your rope, but just take the time and ask God what His plans are for you and what he wants you to do. Then sit back and stay out of the way and let the Lord do His work. Don’t try to do it yourself cause you know you’ll mess it up. Daniel 2:21 And He changes the times and the season. He removes kings and raises up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those that have understanding. If you don’t know the Lord all you have to do is pray and ask Him to come into your life. Some say, “I don’t know how

By: Trisha Beasley Candee Lou Sommer’s Poker Run was Saturday, August 13th 2016. The proceeds from this ride went to Candee Lou’s Children. The ride was set up to provide financial support for Candee’s funeral and other expenses for her children. The benefit was set up following the tragic loss Candee Lou Sommer. On June 26, 2016 Candee Lou Sommer was killed in a motorcycle crash. She was riding with Scott Farr when a drunk driver struck his motorcycle. A senseless act that took the lives of two people in the blink of an eye! This was a terrible tragedy that can never be undone. The poker run was a route covering the span of local businesses including Charlie Mike’s Pub, Legends, The Dog House, 22 Clicks, and Louie’s. Many local bikers took part in the planning of the poker run, which Dean Barefoot, Emma Roberts, Angelic Justice, and Gail McDonald spearheaded. The run was a bit different as the majority of the group rode together for the most part. And, before the last stop at Louie’s the group rode by the crash site and everyone hailed Candee Lou and Scott with two revs of the throttle! Afterwards, everyone met back at Louie’s for some dinner and stories of remembrance for Candee Lou Sommer. There were lots of people in attendance and most everyone ended up making an evening of it with some good backyard jams under the cabana. Everyone in attendance rode in the highest esteem for Candee Lou Sommer, a friend to all and to all a friend! CANDEE SOMMER and SCOTT FARR you are loved and missed every day! Rest in Peace.

By: Bill Gallaway On Saturday, September 10th, the Greenville Star Touring and Riding Club rode in memory of one of their own that passed away from cancer in 2012. The annual ride is always up to the Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This year was no different. The number of riders has changed over the years and this year the ride fell on the same day as the Clemson football game, so the number of riders was fewer than in the past. Also, many of the newer members didn’t know Hazel so elected not to ride in the 95º heat. They missed the cool mountain temperatures and the great lunch at the Inn. As long as we continue to do this ride, Hazel will be remembered. I R I DE
