ome people consider September as the end of the “riding season”, but I beg to differ. In the Carolinas, September is the beginning of the fall riding season and is one of the nicest times of the year to ride. The vacation season is mostly over, the kids are back in school, and the rhythm of life seems to return to normal, if there is such a thing. There is no shortage of events to attend as is evidenced by The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. The Cruisin’ Calendar, in print or online, is the “go to” resource for Carolina motorcycle riders. No one lists more events than we do and we do it for free. The Ray Price Capitol City Bikefest roars into Raleigh, NC on September 23-25. It is the nation’s largest downtown bike rally. In its 12th year, it has grown to attract national celebrities, bike builders, vendors, bands and over 125,000 motorcycle enthusiasts are expected to attend. There are three venues, a street festival with free Sturgis style bike parking on Fayetteville Street, The Motorsports Expo in the Convention Center, and the Ray Price Harley-Davidson dealership. Hometown Hawgs Iron Butt Ride

Story by Danny Bollinger WOW! How do I get started describing this ride? Several weeks ago the Hometown Hawgs crew was eating lunch and discussing riding motorcycles in general. Ed Woody asked, “Do y’all think our customers see us as bikers or just a bunch of guys selling them?” I thought, “We need to put some rides together”. About 2 hours later, Ed says, “Let’s do an Iron Butt Ride.” So we set a date, held a couple meetings and decided it’s on. As time grew closer we decided to have everyone meet at the shop Friday evening and we would all spend the night here. Get up, have breakfast at the Waffle House, and set our course at 2 am. Right on schedule at 2 am, eight of us fired up our bikes and headed out followed by the Hawg Transport truck and trailer. We had the truck follow us in case someone became ill or gave

up. Our plan was to stop every 120 miles for fuel and short rests. The ride down was great. We had good cool weather in the morning. No bike issues except for Jan, one of her cables wanted to stick but we greased it and moved on. Of course there was plenty of talk coming from the war wagon about Daniel Perkins’ driving. Lucky was fussing. All and all it was a great mix. Our group arrived at The Boot Hill Saloon in Daytona Beach at approximately 11:15 am. We were so excited about getting to visit there and had been in contact with them about when we would arrive. We ended up buying shirts and headed around the corner to Caribbean Jacks for lunch. That’s where our group picture was taken. We decided to keep the same pace of 120 miles per stop heading home and were soon back on the interstate. At the second stop on our journey home we found that everyone was getting dehydrated and one had to drop out due to swelling in his leg. Jan got sick to her stomach, left her groceries, and grabbed a water. She hopped back on and up the road we went. At this point in the 100 degree temperature we decided to stop every 60 miles for water and make sure everyone was ok. Lots of four wheelers cut us off on the interstate, but for the most part we were respected and many times people would get over so we could get the group back together. On the way back, stops became something to look forward to. But by the last couple stops, we started planning our celebration. At our last stop before ending the ride, we celebrated for a few minutes because we had already ridden 1,000 miles and still had 60 to go. Our final stop was at the Circle K right down from the shop. It was like a race to the shop to grab a car and head across the street to Sideways Bar and Grill for a celebration. A big thanks goes out to Lucky Brooks and Daniel Perkins for driving the war wagon and making sure no biker was left behind. Congratulations to those who finished the Iron Butt Ride Ed Woody, Neil Davis, Jan Kirby, Jerry Hensley, Danny Bollinger, Mike Spencer, and Eric Johnson. Speedway Harley-Davidson 3rd Anniversary By: Rose and Lloyd Speedway Harley-Davidson in Concord, NC had a three-year anniversary event July 22-24 to celebrate the third year of Amiee Rogers being owner and operator. They had the Harley-Davidson Demo Truck with a wide assortment of different Harley Davidsons for people to test ride. Every thirty minutes a new group would ride out to test ride the bike of their choice. On Friday there was great food provided by Pizzeria on Arbors Drive in Charlotte. Saturday the Speedway Harley-Davidson HOG Chapter provided barbecue. Sunday they provided hot dogs and hamburgers. Each day the HOG Chapter had homemade ice cream. The event went great with door prizes, and every hour a gift certificate was awarded to a lucky attendee. There were also lots of great sales on merchandise and most of all there were a lot of smiling happy faces. Many thanks to Speedway Harley-Davidson HOG Chapter members volunteering to lead rides, helping with cooking, registration, and teaching riders about their bikes. Congratulations to Aimee and her great crew for making Speedway Harley-Davidson the great dealership it has become. This is going to be an annual event, so keep your eyes on the Speedway Harley-Davidson ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and the Cruisin’ Calendar for all upcoming Speedway Harley-Davidson events. By: Caroline For those of you who are from around this area, you know that Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken has long been a favorite stopping place for bikers. For those of you who have been here before but have not stopped by lately, I would like to invite you to come by to see the “new” Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken. This resurgence in popularity is due to the heart and soul of the new owners, Kenneth Farmer and Wendy Hinson. They have taken a good idea and really ramped it to the next level. Their bike nights on Thursdays feature live music, vendors, games, and menu specials. In addition, they have implemented Cruise-In Sundays for all types of rides. Not to mention, this is still a prime stop for benefit bike rides and the staff do everything possible to make sure all are accommodated. Here are some of the things that I found that really stand out and make this place special. 1. Atmosphere - no matter what is going on, there is always a friendly greeting from staff as

well as customers whenever I come by. This makes one feel right at home! 2. Comfortable setting. A nice covered patio area outside, and cozy comfortable seating inside. Also, a must for motorcycle riders, the facilities offer a nice big paved parking lot that makes it easy to navigate on two wheels or four. 3. This is certainly not the least—the service and kitchen staff is the best around! Speaking of staff, I just got word that a new staff member has been added. Chad Estep, has joined the group bringing a culinary expertise to enhance new menu items. That brings me to the 4th item - great food. My favorite is the wings but I look forward to trying out some of their new menu entrees. You will want to come out to Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken and experience all the great new fun that I predict everyone will enjoy. Vince’s Good As Gold Installs Frankenstein Trike Kits Story by Alan Dockery I sure see lots of three-wheelers on the road these days. As more of us bikers get older, trikes seem like a good way to stay in the wind. Vince Cason at Good As Gold in Statesville, NC, now installs Frankenstein Trikes to help keep y’all riding into those gray beard years. Actually, trikes are for anyone from new riders to experienced bikers. First thing I noticed is how good the Frankenstein Trikes kit looks. Pretty shiny aluminum, looks simple, and affordable, too, something you would be proud to have on your trike. Keep your stock seat and fender while adding a new swingarm, rear end, fenders, wheels, and tires. Vince can install a trike kit on just about any model Harley-Davidson. “These are good quality kits that I can put on your bike,” Vince said. “Since I use your fender and seat there are fewer parts to buy. The Frankenstein parts fit right and look good. This is a high quality trike kit for the money. Customers so far love the way it looks and quality.” Frankenstein Trikes started selling kits, intended for custom builders, about ten years ago. Soon they realized riders wanted the kits to convert their street bikes to three wheels. According to their marketing, they use the best American-made components, Dana differentials, Nine Inch Ford street/strip axles, billet four-piston calipers, stainless steel rotors, grade 8 or better hardware and lots of 6061 T6 billet aluminum for the trike kits manufactured in Kansas. “The basic kit is around $5,000. Matt Fletcher Memorial Ride And Benefit

On 6/9/16 Matt Fletcher lost his life in a tragic motorcycle accident. He left behind a wife and two small children. Matt’s friends and family along with Double D Burnout Saloon decided to put together a memorial ride and benefit to support Matt’s wife and children. On 7/16/16 it all came together. Thanks goes out to Time Out Sports Bar, Baggers, The Ole Watering Hole, and Double D Burnout Saloon for participating. Thanks to Onry and Mean Cooking Team for doing all the cooking. Three great bands, Somewhat Forgotten, Mad House and Rukus, stepped up and played. They all did a great job. 1st Annual Suede & Chrome Hot Rods And Harleys Cruise In

By: Grant Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury is always coming up with new events. It’s their job to bring in business and I don’t remember one being as successful as 1st Annual Suede & Chrome Hot Rods And Harleys Cruise In on Saturday, August 6th. Last count had around 150 old and new street and strip hot rods on hand and more bikes than you will see at any large event in the southeast. Check out Tilley’s web site to see some of the cars and bikes on hand. Food vendors and free adult beverages were available and a rock-a-billy band called “The Tremors” rocked the hot as hell parking lot. I never saw anyone fall out but it’s hot in August in North Carolina and we all know it, so there was plenty of free water, too. A large group of fundraiser vendors and “Fast Freddie Thompson” kept the crowd entertained during down time for the band. Lots and lots of door prizes were handed out and a lot of stories about cars and trucks we had in our past were told to each other. I met a few old friends who are no longer able to ride two wheels and have migrated to the classic/rat rod side now and they were telling of new tales of adventures with new groups of people. I have always said “God Willing” when I get to old to hold up old “blackie”, I will get me a car or truck and hang out. Heck, the way I look at it would be a new group of people to tell my old lies too. Ha Ha But I got to hand this one to Junior and all the staff at Tilley H-D of Salisbury. This was a great event and I think everyone really enjoyed themselves. I only heard positive comments on

how well it went and I truly believe it surprised a lot of us on the amount of support Tilley’s had on this event. I have known for a good while that the car hobby continues to be strong and this is due to most of us getting older but still wanting to do stuff with groups. Great Job, Tilley’s. It was plenty hot, so a lazy afternoon hanging out in the shade at Southside Park and talking about the vehicles we brought was a fine way to spend Saturday afternoon. All kinds of bikes and riders are welcome. When they can get enough people motivated to leave the shade and play they do bike games, Harley riders versus sport bike riders. There’s a dyno shoot out with free runs for y’all who want to see if those pipes and air cleaner really gave you more power. Danny Bollinger from Hometown Hawgs took Best Of Show among the bikes with a beauty for sale. Best Harley went to Elias Mora. Daniel Perkins rode in the Best Cruiser and Gary Solesby the Best Touring. Next Summer I’d love to see a bunch of y’all ride over to our little Southern town for the day.

Quilts Of Valor By: Ann Jones Saturday was a special day for 20 men (including a service dog), with Quilts Of Valor. The oldest one was 90 and he did 20 years the Army and 20 years in the Air Force and is still working. This was so great! These ladies of Quilts of Valor started this in 2000 and have done over 184,000 quilts nationwide and 8000 in Horry County alone! The handy work, the time, the love for our country was shown again to us in Murrells Inlet, SC at the VFW. How this works is, someone nominates a veteran, whether they were on the ground fighting or in the armed services, to receive a quilt. The hall was full and standing room only with family members and several Veteran Support groups including Rolling Thunder SC 3, Warrior Watch Riders SC 2, Combat Vets, VFW Riders, and Moose Riders there to support their brothers and sisters. I would also like to add, that there are so much love for our soldiers and veterans. This is what America is all about! It is sticking together and honoring our Veterans, past, present, and future. This country is the most wonderful place you could ever ask to be in. It is not in the Bahamas, or Mexico, it is in our own back yard.

The wonderful ladies that do the quilting do so much and praise GOD for them as well. Thank all the ladies that have done the beautiful work, the time and effort that they put into these quilts and for our men and women, our soldiers and veterans who have sacrificed greatly for this wonderful country!

6th Annual Patriot Rovers Ride For The Fallen By: Buzz A parking lot full of motorcycles on a warm summer morning is always a great start to the day. That was the sight I was greeted with on July 30th at registration for the 6th Annual Patriot Rovers Ride For the Fallen. There were plenty of Veterans MC’s and patriots surrounding the registration table in an effort to support a worthy cause, the Patriot Rovers, a nonprofit committed to serving soldiers and honoring heroes. The Patriot Rovers is a healing mission that provides professionally trained and certified Psychiatric Service Dogs, instruction, therapeutic group camaraderie and support services to Veterans struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury as a result of their service to our country. The Rovers are trained psychiatric service dogs that fit the following needs: medical alert and response, direct services for daily functioning, strengthens morale and wellbeing, stabilization and a sense of purpose, socialization and reintegration, and potential workforce training through new skills. On top of providing these service dogs to our veterans at no cost, the Rovers are named after our Heroes that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Gold Star families request a dog to be named after their loved one to keep their spirit alive. These families meet the dog and the soldier receiving the dog and form personal relationships. There was just enough time to get the 100+ bikes and riders

registered for the escorted ride before it was time to hit the road. David Cantera, a U.S. Army Veteran, Canine Behavioral Expert, and Founder Chairman of the Patriot Rovers, took the mic and expressed his thanks for the attendance, and gave recognition to the Gold Star Families that were in attendance. David showed us all a DVD filled with images of our fallen heroes as he called their names out. There wasn’t a dry eye in attendance as we remember these brave Americans who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and way of life. When the riders returned from the ride up to Stokes County, they were greeted by some good ol’ Rock n Roll being played by the Donnaha Station Band. They were really cranking out some tunes! Once parked, the chow line formed and Twisted Pair BBQ was slinging eats as fast as they could. They had Pulled Pork BBQ, BBQ Chicken, pasta salad, and slaw, and let me tell you, it was some of the best I have ever had! We ate, enjoyed camaraderie, and listen to the band jam for a while. David pulled the 50/50 ticket and the winner did the right thing and donated the $200 + back to the Patriot Rovers. Thank you, David, and the rest of the Patriot Rover staff and supporters for your amazing work. While at the event I had the privilege of visiting with some of the veterans who are recipients of the Rovers Psychiatric Service Dogs, all of which gave glowing reviews of the Patriot Rovers program and the service dog they were given. This is truly an amazing service. The vision of Patriot Rovers is to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while in service to our nation, and to help bring healing to the loved ones left behind. Our Gold‐Star families deserve our love, honor and respect. The mission achieves this while simultaneously providing a lifetime therapeutic companion for a veteran that is on duty 24/7. Everyone that rides knows that a two-wheeled motorcycle has significantly less traction than a car with four wheels. Additionally, motorcycle tires themselves have less traction than car tires, since the motorcycle tire surface is rounded, whereas a car tire is flatter and has more area of rubber on the pavement. Not only does it take motorcycles more time to stop in an emergency situation than a car, but the consequences of crashing can be devastating to the riders. For that reason, it is especially important for motorcyclists to not tailgate. It is necessary to maintain a safe speed and distance from the vehicle in front of them in order to be able to safely stop in the event that the other vehicle comes to an unexpected stop. There have been many instances where groups of riders have had large accidents caused by the people in the front of the group riding too close and the vehicle in front of the group suddenly slowed, causing a chain reaction accident. Essentially, following close to the vehicle in front of you is not worth your life. Make sure that you maintain a safe speed and distance from the vehicle in front of you and anticipate that the vehicle may suddenly slow down or come to an abrupt stop. The Fifth Annual Iron Chariot Ride

By: Kevin Campbell Saturday, August 6th was the Fifth Annual Iron Chariot Ride, which benefits The Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge in Greensboro. Overcoming a number of obstacles, we were blessed with a beautiful Carolina blue sky. Over 40 bikes and 50 riders came out to support this awesome cause. Teen Challenge is a Christian-based program for men 18 and older, who are recovering from drug, alcohol, and other addictions. Dr. Bob Harman and his wife Debbie, who also rode with us, lead the Teen Challenge Ministry. The ride began at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro, our key

sponsor. There were free Krispy Kreme Donuts and Starbucks coffee for everyone during registration. Kick stands up at 10 am and we were off! We went on a twohour ride along country roads. We ended the ride at the Teen Challenge campus where all the riders were treated to a free lunch provided by Jam’s Deli and chocolate chip cookies by Harris Teeter. A raffle was held after lunch. Among the prizes was a patched denim jacket donated by Harley-Davidson of Greensboro, as well as Christian folk art created by Mike Williams Sr. All the riders got to mingle and meet the Teen Challenge students. The students sang, gave testimonies, and shared their hope for the future. What an amazing time of fellowship. Over $4500 was raised to help with the expenses of the program. 12th Annual Sunday Bash At Tilley Harley-Davidson Of Statesville Story and photo by Alan Dockery We know the middle of July is hot and muggy, so riding is a good way to cool off. And hundreds of bikers did that, riding to Tilley Harley-Davidson, Statesville, NC, for the 12th Annual Sunday Afternoon Bash organized by employee Ronnie Carver. So many folks showed up for the bash that bikes filled the main lot and parked all the way around the building. Once at the dealership, you could get some BBQ and a cold beer or soda for lunch and sit in the shade of the big tent. It is always good to catch up with old friends and make new ones over lunch. The Part Time Blues Band jammed The Bash with classic rock all afternoon. Outside, bikes lined up for the show. Inside the dealership it was cool and there were great deals on bikes, accessories, and MotorClothes. The proceeds from the Sunday Bash go to a fantastic cause at Victory Junction Gang Camp. Ronnie’s Bike Show featured some really nice machines this year. Winners were: 1st Place - Robert Newman, Elkin, 2nd Place - Sherri Holden, Newton; 3rd Place and Best of Show went to Tasha Myers Collins of Statesville. Zach Ponton, Sales and Finance, said, “This is the biggest turnout I’ve seen in a few years. The support we have from our customers is absolutely phenomenal. As long as we give them a place to come and a place to have fun and bring some vendors our customers really show support and come out.

Tilley H-D has two dealerships open seven days a week to serve the community. We always give top dollar for customers’ trades. When we take care of the customer and put them first everything else falls in place.” Bikers there for the afternoon and the Tilley H-D staff all said, thanks to Ronnie for putting on another great bash. Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner Becomes The Fastest Ever Triumph On The Bonneville Salt Flats

The Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner has become the world’s fastest ever Triumph by achieving a speed of 274.2 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats on 8 August 2016. Piloted by TT legend Guy Martin, the streamliner smashed the previous official Triumph record that stood at 245.667 mph as well as the unofficial Triumph Record of 264mph, both set by Bob Leppan, in the Gyronaut X-1. Near perfect conditions greeted the team on the final day of the team’s land speed practice week. With confidence high after a successful number of days running on the salt at Bonneville the team’s goal for the day with the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner was the Triumph record. Just after 8:30am Guy Martin and the team set off on the first run of the day, after a steady start, Martin accelerated the sleek looking streamliner to a staggering 274.2 mph, rewriting Triumph history in the process. Each time Martin has sat in the streamliner on the salt, he has been able to achieve the goals set by Crew Chief and the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner designer Matt Markstaller and his team with the required level of control. When asked about becoming the fastest ever Triumph record holder Martin commented: “It’s good and we are moving in the right direction, but it is just one step on the way to what me and team are here to do.” The Triumph Infor Rocket features a carbon Kevlar monocoque construction with two turbocharged Triumph Rocket III engines producing a combined 1,000 bhp at 9,000 rpm. The motorcycle is 25.5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall. Powered by methanol fuel, the bike is competing in the Division C (streamlined motorcycle) category. Triumph has a history of breaking the land speed record, holding the title of ‘World’s Fastest Motorcycle’ between 1955 to 1970*. The record-breaking Triumph Streamliners included: Devil’s Arrow, Texas Cee-gar, Dudek Streamliner and Gyronaut X1, the former achieving a top speed of 245.667 mph (395.28 km/h). Today’s record, held by Rocky Robinson since 2010 riding the Top Oil-Ack Attack streamliner, sits at 376.363 mph (605.697 km/h). The iconic Bonneville name was conceived following Johnny Allen’s land-speed record runs at the Salt Flats in September 1956, when he reached the record-breaking speed of 193.72 mph. The first T120 Bonneville model was unveiled at the Earls Court Bike Show and went on sale in 1959. In addition to all they do for educating folks about the POW and MIA issue, they also help out with the needs of local Veterans. This past Saturday on July 16, Clemmons Motorcycles hosted the group for a bike/car wash, barbeque, and music. I, personally, have been waiting for this event so that I could get my bike a badly needed cleaning. As Rolling Thunder President, Bob Penn, pointed out not keeping it clean can potentially hide maintenance issues. I promise, in the future, I will attend all their bike washes since cleaning my bike is not even close to being an activity on my priority list. Seriously, this was a great event, and even with the threatening rain, folks were not shy about coming out to get their 2 or 4 wheel rides cleaned. Your GPS May Be Spying On You

Beware. Your GPS may be collecting evidence against you. More and more motorcyclists today are using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) to plan trips, get directions and keep track of miles traveled. However, keep in mind that if you are in a motorcycle accident, you may be collecting evidence that could be used against you in both a criminal and civil trial.   Most GPS systems allow you to keep track of your speed. As such, they can be used as evidence in court. I have come across jurisdictions, which, at the scene of an accident when speed is a question, will seize a crash victim’s GPS, get a search warrant, and download the information pertaining to speed. Such action does more than subject the crash victim to a speeding ticket. It can, if the injured party was speeding, put their ability to collect damages for their injuries at risk. That means, if the party who injures you can show that you were in some way at fault in causing the accident, then depending on which state you were injured in, your claim can be reduced, or outright denied.  Keep in mind that I am in no way suggesting that you should not use a GPS on your motorcycle. I am merely suggesting that if you do, keep in mind that depending on the system and how you use it; you could be collecting evidence that could eventually be used by a party that injures you to avoid paying for the injuries they caused.   If you have any further questions or comments concerning this article or any other matters concerning your rights as a motorcyclist, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Then George came into our life via Glenn Smith of Warrior Watch Riders SC 2. George is so special and his smile will light you up. George was need of some new wheels and Emmitt Jones, also of Warrior Watch Riders SC 2, had recently acquired John’s scooter and with the blessing of John’s lovely sisters, Jane & Pat, we were about to help George out. By: Elizabeth Brown Ian Tyler Greenway, 26, of Columbia, died Wednesday, June 15, 2016. He was born in Columbia on October 26, 1989. Ian loved with the biggest heart. He was the best son, big brother, and friend to all. Ian graduated from Richland Northeast High School, Class of 2008 and worked for Thunder Tower HarleyDavidson. Ian was an essential part of our Thunder Tower HarleyDavidson family and the motorcycling community. He was a remarkable person with a joyous heart, dynamic personality, and an infectious laugh. He was always willing to lend a hand, with an optimistic attitude, no matter the situation. Ian held a passion, like no other, for Harley-Davidson motorcycles close to his heart, and shared his enthusiasm with whomever he met. He was a member of Shandon Baptist Church. Ian is survived by his parents, Jackie and Vic Greenway and his sister, Ariana Greenway, all of Columbia and the love of his life, Christine Kneece. He is also survived by “The Tribe”, as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins, and a multitude of friends to include his dog, Heidi. There are not enough words to describe how sorely he will be missed. Rest easy, brother.

Summer Bash At Greensboro Harley-Davidson By: Buzz Summertime for bikers is the eternal search for places to go to bask in the sun and do what bikers do best, PARTY. Greensboro Harley-Davidson makes it easy on you every summer by throwing blockbuster parties. The Summer Bash is their marquee event of the summer and every year it’s an event that draws a crowd. This year the Bash was on July 16th at the famed Motorcycle Park beside Greensboro Harley-Davidson. For those of you poor souls who have never been to the Motorcycle Park, it is a beautiful green space with big shady Pin Oaks, a big permanent stage, and crowned with Chunk’s Hawg Haven; a great biker bar! The Bash started at 11am up with a guided ride that took 40+ bikes on a loop through the country. There was a lot of chrome in that line up, and it sure looked good rolling by! The dealership was a site to see with orange and black balloons held down by beautiful previously enjoyed motorcycles all around the parking lot and a great selection of shiny new Harley-Davidson motorcycles filling the showroom just waiting on you! While the ride was out burning up the asphalt, vendors, food trucks, and other party ready bikers showed to kick off the

Bash. Jack Of Clubs, a sweet 2 man acoustic set, was jamming out the first tunes of the day as the riders pulled back in from the ride. This event is a huge reunion every year and we enjoy seeing all our buddies and making a ton of new friends every year. By mid afternoon the parking lot had filled, the shoulder of the road parked full and the motorcycle park was buzzing with folks enjoying the afternoon. The Invaders were the second band to take the stage and kept the crowd entertained while the Triad HOG Chapter grilled up a mountain of food. Let me tell you, they did a heck of a job and there wasn’t one hungry biker out there! During a band break Sharee and Kelsey of Harley-Davidson of Greensboro rounded up all our scruffy friends for a Beard Competition. Eight bearded competitors described how they became gods of the beard realm and less manly things like what beard products they used. Crowd participation crowned Chris Barnard as the Bearded Champion with Chris Comer and Cody Lathan taking a solid 2nd and 3rd place. The Rukus Band took the stage after the Beard Contest and refocused the crowd to the task at hand, THE BASH! They got in their set before the afternoon rain came. Unfortunately, the rest of the afternoon was a wash out. Not to worry, we still had a blast and have the pictures to prove it! PGR Mission for Gene Fetherbay - USMC

By: Wally Wersching Gene Lee Fetherbay was a Vietnam Veteran who spent one year in Vietnam as a US Marine during the late 1960’s. The Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) were requested to stand for him during the visitation at the Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton, NC on July 21st. Gene was 70 years old when he died Monday, July 18, 2016. The PGR Mission was for the visitation only. The burial service will be held at a later date. I received the notification on the 20th, and planned to go. Morganton is only an hour from home. I left home about 3pm heading north on Rte. 226. I wanted to take the long way because it was such a nice afternoon. The weather forecast called for “Pop-up Showers”. I checked the radar map before I left, and there was rain in the area but not where I was going. When I rode through Polkville, NC, I veered to the right to get on Rte. 10. I enjoy riding on Rte. 10 even though it’s a little longer to get to Rte. 18 than the shortcut through Belwood. Once on Rte. 18, I stopped at Green’s Cycle Shop to talk with the owner, Ralph, a US Marine veteran. I always enjoy talking with him. He has a lot of interesting opinions about everything. I continued heading north on Rte. 18, and before I knew it, I was pulling into the parking lot for the Sossoman Funeral

Home. I parked in the shade of a large tree along with the other bikes. The other PGR members who were there greeted me. We had a very pleasant conversation. Robert, the mission captain, drove up with the flags. We had an interesting talk about him and his Victory. He’s having some problems with his left arm and hand so he’s not riding it as much. Before long, we established the flag line. There were two entrances to the funeral home so we set up to cover them both. Luckily, all positions were in the shade. The sun was hot! As we were walking to our spots, we heard a loud clap of thunder. We thought that we might encounter one of those “Pop-up Showers”. It was only a little noise – no rain. We stood with our flags, and greeted Gene’s friends and relatives as they came to pay their respects. A couple men shook our hands, and thanked us for being there. They both went to high school with Gene so they knew him for a very long time. They also looked like US Marine veterans, too. I left at about 6pm so I could make it home by 7pm. It was a good thing because about 20 minutes after I got home, and walked the dog, we were drenched by an hour long “Pop-up Shower”. I was honored to pay my respects to Gene, and I was also glad that I made it home before it rained. I was lucky!

Damn, It’s Hot Party And Benefit For Sonja Hefner

By: Uwharrie Charlie Mercy! It has been hotter than a black alley cat on a hobo sandwich in a Miami dumpster in August! The devil just passed me in a race to the kiddy pool! That’s why I’m glad hearing that Tonya is getting the water slide set up soon for some outdoor style adult fun at Stars & Bars Tavern! Combating hot with wet just gets better starting with a wet and cold beverage to build and soothe the ole brain cells then followed up with a cool mist machine out under the tin canopy one can feel the heat beginning to fade away. Ad a dip in the kiddy pool then a run and jump down the slip-n-slide to top that off and you’re on your way! Don’t forget that wet cold beverage when you get back up to the top of the hill and watch out for those cold water balloons flying around! This weekend party was tipped off Friday night with the “T I M E” band playing inside in the air-conditioning with a growing crowd. bikini contest and the Brent Brown & Friends band twistin up some strings and skins. Tim Rogers had plenty of pizza and wings brought in for whoever wished to jump on them, and they were quite good! Thanks, Tim. Thanks, Tonya for your work on the water sports and thanks to Lynn for orchestrating another great weekend! A lot of folks camped out for the events and anyone is welcome to do so whenever these many events take place. If ya want to party and camp all weekend I can’t think of a better place to do it at than Stars & Bars Tavern. It eliminates the possibility of feeding the government bear. On Sunday, a ride was planned for a regular and loved one at the tavern. She was injured in a horrible wreck and left with mounting bills to pay and not to mention lost wages from being out of the workforce. The ride for Sonja Hefner was to Morrow Mountain, a favorite among many in and out of this area. Guess what? It was HOT! Led by yours truly and glad to do it, I met some new folk on the ride, which is always a plus. What a beautiful day and ride. When we arrived back at Stars & Bars Tavern, the auction items were awarded and Cherokee was spinning some tunes and hosting karaoke to anyone with a voice and a will. By: Caroline I had the opportunity to meet some great folks at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson on Saturday, July 16. This benefit ride began around 10:30 am and was led by celebrity guest David “Big Swole” Rose, Harley-Davidson’s official biker chef. Big Swole teamed up with local motorcycle clubs, Carolina Cruisers and Black Tigers to celebrate the heritage of African American riders. After a two hour ride, the party continued at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson with lunch for the riders. Of course, you can bet the food was delicious with a celebrity chef in the house! DJ BEATZ entertained the riders and guests featuring a selection of jazz, rhythm, blues, and popular music. Of course, all the fun was to benefit one of this area’s best-loved nonprofits, Samaritan Kitchen and Ministries. I spoke to Willis Miller the Assistant Director, who explained that Samaritan Ministries has been feeding and ministering to the area’s homeless, as well as anyone needing a meal for decades. Plans are definitely in the works to make this an annual event. Freddie Pait Benefit Ride

By: Trisha Beasley The Freddie Pait Benefit Ride took place on Saturday, August 6, 2016. It was held at the Lion’s Club in Dublin, NC. Bikers were there early eager and waiting to register. Freddie Pait is a local man of the community. He has always worked hard as an independent truck driver. However, on June 20th of this year he was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. As Freddie’s condition worsened he was transferred to Cape Fear Valley Hospital where he underwent a mandatory lung surgery on July 2nd. On July 8th, following the surgery, he was released but only to the extent that he could return home and be monitored constantly by home health nurses. As health care costs are always rising, the bills just mount up in no time! Freddie’s medical expenses well exceeded what he hoped would be a single emergency room visit. Only compounded by the fact that he could not return to work so every expense seemed to be inflated to the highest extent imaginable! As you all might have guessed, some biker friends started talking and began working on a solution! The details of this article that you are reading right now, was part of the solution that was agreed upon. The decision was final. They all decided that they should get something together for Freddie Pait. The entire community was involved. It takes everyone working together to organize and plan an event such as this. The chairpersons were selected as Melissa Tatum, Christie Merritt, Stephanie Lewis, and CL Carter. Everyone worked diligently to set things up. These efforts included publishing, funding, and coordinating the ride. On this Saturday, the grills were blazing and plate sales were in progress. Bikers were there to graciously give their registration fees and do what they feel in their hearts every day, ride! Everyone was selling, buying, or wearing their Freddie Pait Tee-shirts. There were numerous ticket sales, which included door prizes, raffle, and 50/50 tickets and let’s not forget the cakes! The energy and atmosphere was exhilarating. Everyone esteemed in honor and pride to be a part of a noble cause. Everyone was thrilled to be able to take part in the doing of good deeds while simultaneously getting to ride their motorcycles. Certainly, a win-win situation for everyone! The ride was set to begin with kickstands up at 10 a.m. But there was a delay in plans. The Monday before the ride date, Freddie had to return to the hospital as his condition required

more days of hospital stay with continual doctor supervision. And as friends and loved ones were in contact with Freddie and the family they discovered that Freddie would be released from the hospital that morning. They all wanted to see Freddie when he was released, so the event was delayed until Freddie was able to join them. Freddie arrived and “walked in” with his family and necessary medical equipment. It was a blessing for all involved as the riders were happy to see him out of the hospital and Freddie and his family were in awe; overwhelmed by the love and support that was shown to them on this day. Today we celebrate compassion, friendship, community, and brotherhood. As necessity is the mother of invention, so are the tireless efforts of bikers all over the country. And these Bladen County Bikers are no different. They hold fast to a code that says you help others when you can. This is an act of “true brotherhood” in its purest form. The “Golden Rule”, if you will, is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The proud members of this biker community have continued with their endeavors to do just that! The events of the day are just another reminder of their dedication and loyalty. The area has hosted a number of bike events, benefits, and fundraisers for the community and other people that have fallen on hard times. Some are due to medical expenses, such as today, as well as others that had unfortunate accidents or untimely deaths. The kinship and unity that is felt when we come together to help another is spectacular. It creates such a formidable and vigorous bond for the entire community. It builds an alliance and unification that generates a brighter outlook on our world. It allows us to build honor, pride, and valuable memories. We reflect on times such as these with love, respect, and reverence. We cherish and admire the compassionate regard we build towards one another. We celebrate our sense of understanding, kindness, and support for our brother. The future will no doubt bring more causes to work for and bikers will stand in support of good will and patronage. The event was a success on so many levels. The family and community are grateful for everyone’s time, support, dedication, and service. Freddie Pait still has a long road of recovery ahead of him and these times will definitely not be easy! But, he does know that he does not have to face them alone!

AMA Pro Flat Track At Charlotte Story and photo by Alan Dockery As the sun went down on a July Saturday, the action heated up on the dirt track at Charlotte. The stars of the AMA Pro Grand National Championship were in town for the ninth race in their 14-race series, The Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Charlotte Half-Mile. Folks, this was American Pro Flat Track racing at the best. Big bikes going real fast and putting on a great show for the fans. Almost 90 racers were entered, running two classes. AMA Pro GNC1 is the premier class of expert riders competing at the highest level. Their big twins make about 100 horsepower and looked like they were running well over 100 miles per hour at Charlotte. The stars of tomorrow come from the AMA Pro GNC2 class. These are the younger riders gaining experience and looking to move up to GNC1. They put on a great show, too. Walking the pits you notice the famous Harley-Davidson XR750 that has dominated flat track for most of our lives is still in it and winning. But the sport welcomes all kinds of motorcycles eligible to run flat track including Aprilia, BMW, Buell, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph, and Yamaha.

This year there was more than just cool bikes and racing for the fans. Promoter, American Flat Track Events, asked us to “Come for the party and stay for the race.” To help make the Charlotte Half-Mile even more entertaining they created a Fan Zone. Just outside the track, you could enjoy a band, vendors, antique motorcycle displays, food, craft beers, and the new line of flat track racing merchandise. There was a Kid Zone for the young fans. Since the race is sponsored by The Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association, lots of new bikes were there for demo rides. Flat track is run in multiple heats and semi-final races typically on Saturday night. Fans get intense action with short breaks between the races to get food, drink, and souvenirs. The final races started after dark and gave fans a great show. In GNC 1 presented by Vance & Hines the gold went to Jared Mees, again, riding a H-D XR750. Brandon Robinson was runner-up on an H-D XR750. Third went to Kenny Coolbeth, Jr., on an XR 750. Mees’ margin of victory was 0.160 of a second over Robinson on the final lap. “This year has been nothing but redemption, with the X Games and now Charlotte,” Mees said. “It’s been really good. We got a decent start and then Halbert kind of rolled around the outside and I was on him for a bit and I couldn’t seem to get by because I didn’t want to run the same line that he was running. So I kind of made an aggressive pass but kind of took his line away, he was burning it in and was low in the middle and was taking a long time to gather the middle up. So I kind of just stuck it in there and took the line away and I didn’t look back until we started running into lappers. All-in-all it paid off.” The GNC 2 winner was Kolby Carlile riding a Honda CRF450R. Ryan Wells on a CRF450R took second and Dalton Gauthier rode his Yamaha YZ450F took third place. 12th Annual Antique Bikes On Main By: Wally Wersching Every summer during the last weekend in July, the town of Chesnee, SC is the place to be if you love old motorcycles. This year was no exception. The 12th Annual Antique Bikes On Main was held in that small southern town on July 29th, 30th, and 31st. The last weekend in July is usually the hottest weekend of the summer but this year it was comfortable on Saturday because it was overcast with temps in the upper 80’s. They had a small shower later in the day, which cooled it off even more. Sunday was a different story. It was hot and humid with plenty of sunshine with temps in the mid 90’s. Antique Bikes On Main started as a oneday event with just the Sunday Antique Bike Show on Main Street. It has grown into a three-day event with the swap meet on Friday evening, all day Saturday, and Sunday, and the bike show all day Sunday. The “Fun Fair” is held on all three days, too. the growth and promotion of the event but the city of Chesnee is behind the project. On Saturday, I arrived at about 10:30AM. I stopped to visit with Dennis who was very busy making sure that everything ran smoothly. I walked around the swap-meet field, and saw many interesting parts, and motorcycles – everything was for sale. As I passed each tent, I could hear the owner and customer talking about a specific part that the customer needed. It’s hard to sell at a swap meet. If you sell early, you might be selling too cheap but if you wait until the end, you might just have to take the stuff home again. Buyers are faced with the same dilemma. Do you buy early or wait until the end? If it’s a rare part that you need to complete a project bike, how much will you spend? No matter what, it’s always fun. Later, I walked to the field down the street to see the amusement rides. All rides were free, and the kids loved it! It was like a mini carnival. The food vendors were ready to serve their delicious treats to every customer, and the clothing vendors were also ready to sell anything and everything. There was a fireworks display scheduled for 9:30PM that evening, too. In the afternoon, the local Legends Chapter of the AMCA (Antique Motorcycle Club of America) hosted a finale’ dinner for the annual Kickstart Rally which started at the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley on Friday morning. Despite a little evening shower, everything went as scheduled, and a good time was had by all. On Sunday, I went to Chesnee at about 10:30AM. The ride in was cool and comfortable but I could tell that it was going to be a hot one later. When I arrived, Rev Mike of the Bare

Bones Biker Ministry was holding his usual Sunday Service under the tent used by the Kickstart Rally the night before. There were quite a few people at the service listening to an easy sounding guitarist singing. I walked down toward Main Street, and there was a bandstand erected in the middle of the street. It blocked any vehicle from getting onto Rt 221. They were just setting up when I passed. I wanted to see the old bikes so I walked down Main Street a few times because there were bikes coming in a steady stream, and I didn’t want to miss any. In the show, there were many Harleys – Flatheads, Knuckleheads, Panheads, and Shovelheads. It was like seeing old friends. There were many other makes in the show too like: Indian, Triumph, BSA, Norton, BMW, Servi-Cycle, Vespa, Allstate, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, and Kawasaki. There were as many unusual bikes across the street as in the show. It’s a great destination for a Sunday ride no matter what you’re riding. I walked to the Sandy Run Cycle tent. Rick was there selling his stock of British motorcycle parts, and clothing. The sun was hot, and the shade from his tent was like a breath of cool fresh air. Across the street was the tent for the Indian dealership in Lowell, NC. I spent some time under their tent to get out of the sun while looking at the many beautiful Indian motorcycles. The band started playing, and that drowned out any conversation. They played loud enough that all at the event

could hear their music – which was pretty good! While walking around, I met a few friends whom I hadn’t seen in a while. That’s the added benefit from events like this. It gets people out of the house to gather together, and enjoy motorcycles. The best bike of the event in my opinion was a beautifully restored early 1940’s Indian Four from West Virginia. They were based on the old Ace Motorcycle company specs, and discontinued when WWII broke out. It looked perfect – better than new! I didn’t hear him ride in. I love to hear the old four cylinder bikes run. They sound like old sports cars – smooth and sweet. I headed home a little after noon. I wanted to get home into the A/C before it really got hot. Later, Danny came over for a nice Sunday dinner. It was a great way to spend a Sunday. I’ll do it again next year.

Into a Belfast pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he’d just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, His face is cut and bruised and he’s walking with a limp. “What happened to you?” asks Sean, the bartender. “Jamie O’Conner and me had a fight,” says Paddy. “That little shit, O’Conner?”, says Sean, “He couldn’t do that to you. I’ve given up social media for the New Year and am trying to make friends outside Facebook while applying the same principles. Every day, I walk down the street and tell passersby what I’ve eaten, how I feel, what I did the night before, and what I will do tomorrow. Then I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and me gardening. I also listen to their conversations and tell them I love them. And it works. I already have three people following me - two  police officers and a psychiatrist.

Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods. A smaller tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, “Is that tree a son of a beech or a son of a birch?” The birch says he cannot tell, but just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling. The birch says, “Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that tree is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?” The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree and replies, “It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however, the best piece of ash I have ever poked my pecker into.” I’m at the library, and for some reason, when I plug my flash drive into the computer, it doesn’t show up. I keep trying, but nothing happens. As an IT major, I know I can figure this out. So I spend 15 minutes changing settings and inserting and removing the flash drive. Then a girl sitting next to me taps my shoulder and says, “You’re plugging into my computer, not yours.” I went to the store the other day, and I was in there for only about five minutes. When I came out there was a cop writing a parking ticket. So I went up to him and said, “Come on, buddy how about giving a guy a break?” He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. So I called him a pencil-necked jerk. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for worn out tires. So I called him a piece of horse $hit. He finished the ticket and put it on the windshield with the first one. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. I didn’t care. My bike was parked around the corner.

A biker was out riding his V-Twin when he collided with a little bird. Thanks to his helmet the biker was all right, but the bird looked dead. The biker was a kind man, and took the bird to a doctor. The doctor said nothing was wrong with the bird, just knocked-out. So the biker went home, built a coop to put the bird in. He put a cup of water and some pieces of stale bread in the coop, then covered it up. When the little bird woke up, he looked around and saw the water, stale bread and the bars and thought, “I’m in prison, I must have killed the biker!”

There was once a blonde woman on a plane to New York. She was in the economy class, but after takeoff, she saw an empty seat in first class and moved there. An attendant saw her and said, “Excuse me, ma’am, but you have a ticket for economy class, not first class. You cannot stay here.” The blonde replied, “I can and I will.” The attendant told the copilot, who came and talked to the woman. “Ma’am, we really can’t have you staying in this seat, your ticket was for economy class.” “You can’t make me move.” The copilot told the captain, who tried to talk her out of the seat but it didn’t work. Finally, a man who had heard what had been going on told the attendant to let him have a go at getting the woman out of the seat because he was married to a blonde, too, so he knew how to deal with her. After a quick chat with her, she moved. The shocked attendant asked him how he did it. The man replied, “I told her first class wasn’t going to New York.”

A lady goes to the doctor and complains that her husband is losing interest in sex. The doctor gives her a pill, but warns her that it’s still experimental. He tells her to slip it into his mashed potatoes at dinner, so that night, she does just that. About a week later, she’s back at the doctor, where she says, “Doc, the pill worked great! I put it in the potatoes like you said! It wasn’t five minutes later that he jumped up, raked all the food and dishes onto the floor, grabbed me, ripped all my clothes off, and ravaged me right there on the table!” The doctor says, “I’m sorry, we didn’t realize the pill was that strong! The foundation will be glad to pay for any damages.” “Nah,” she says, “that’s okay. We’re never going back to that restaurant anyway.” A man is stranded on a desert island, all alone for ten years. One day, he sees a speck in the horizon. He thinks to himself, “It’s not a ship.” The speck gets a little closer and he thinks, “It’s not a boat.” The speck gets even closer and he thinks, “It’s not a raft.” Then, out of the surf comes this gorgeous blonde woman, wearing a wet suit and scuba gear. She comes up to the guy and she says, “How long has it been since you’ve had a cigarette?” “Ten years!” he says. She reaches over, unzips a waterproof pocket on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack of fresh cigarettes. He takes one, lights it, takes a long drag and says, “Man, oh man! Is that good!” Then she asks, “How long has it been since you’ve had a drink of whiskey?” He replies, “Ten years!” She reaches over, unzips her waterproof pocket on the right, pulls out a flask and gives it to him. He takes a long swig and says, “Wow, that’s fantastic!” Then she starts unzipping this long zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit and she says to him, “And how long has it been since you’ve had some REAL fun?” And the man replies, “My God! Don’t tell me you’ve got a motorcycle in there!”

Christmas In July 2016 By: Kelly Wescott We’ve done it again! For the fourteenth year, Christmas In July has held it’s annual toy run to Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham, NC. On Saturday, June 16th, 2016 approximately 300 bikes of all kinds rode from Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson, fully escorted to the hospital in Durham. The rain held off, and there were no incidents of any kind. It was a great day! The events of Christmas In July actually began weeks ago with several bike nights around the Fayetteville, NC area. In June, Cycle Gear held a bike night, and in July, Fort Bragg H-D, Texas Roadhouse and Wal-Mart in Pembroke all held bike nights. Part of the proceeds from these companies’ bike nights are donated to Christmas In July. The annual Kickstart Party was held on July 15th at Legends Pub in Fayetteville. As usual, registrations were ongoing; music playing and the Gypsy women served us a great meal of BBQ, beans, potato salad, chips, and cold drinks. Over 100 registrations so far! Thanks to all at Legends Pub. There have been some changes this year. We met and returned to Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson on Sycamore Dairy Road. M&M Leather is closing its doors and we thank them very much for their years of support. Hopefully FBHD will be hosting us in the future. They were wonderful this year! The Cape Fear HOG Chapter served everyone a ’donations only’ pancake breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and pancakes. Everything was donated and all the monetary donations taken in for the breakfast were given to Christmas In July! As registrations were ongoing, a 50/50 raffle was held raising $584. Winner, John Hunt and family, graciously donated his half back to the cause. Thank you! Raffle prizes were given away, a beautiful handmade cooler/stand was auctioned off, and donations totaling over $2,500 were given to Will from Cycle Works in Hope Mills, The Pembroke Wal-Mart store, Team Corvette of Fayetteville, and from Shift 1 in shipping at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. Soon it was nearing our blast off time of 10 a.m. The National Anthem was beautifully sung by Mr. Terry Dooley from the Raeford Evangelistic Methodist Church with attending flag bearer. We had the official safety briefing from a Cumberland County Sherriff’s Officer and our usual prayer for safety

before kickstands up! Led by officers from Cumberland County, the Durham city and county police and Will, we were off. Sixteen Corvettes, mostly from the Cape Fear Corvette Club, were followed by approximately 300 motorcycles of all types. Harleys, Indians, Hondas, Yamaha’s, trikes and more were escorted all the way to the hospital. Officers from Cumberland County, Lillington, Harnett County Sheriff’s, the Holly Springs Police, the Apex Police, the Cary Police, the Wake County Sheriff’s, and the Duke University Campus Police. A special thanks to Cumberland County and Durham County as they send these officers to ride with us the whole way at the county’s expense. They all do a wonderful job and we truly would not feel safe without them. If you have never seen an approximately 2 mile long stretch of auto’s and bikes, none of us stopping at all from Fayetteville to Durham, it is quite a sight to see. We could not do it without them. We also had a chase/recovery support vehicle and team donated by Hog Country of Hope Mills. Thankfully, it was not needed this year. We welcome them as a new corporate partner. Riding with us this year were new and old friends, including members from the Veterans Nomads Motorcycle Club, The Buffalo Soldiers, the Borinqueneers, the Star Vets from Raleigh/Durham, the Sanford Cruisers, the American Legion Fayetteville Post # 32, The Christian Motorcycle Association, True To the Game, Bad Boyz 4 Life, the #1 Stunnas Motorsports Club, Double B’s and M 25 Ministries. We also had the Cape Fear Corvette Club. We had one rider, Lovie from Raeford (and previously England), who has never, ever ridden in any bike run, ever. I think we spoiled her! We had many, many riders and we thank each and every one of you. Again, if it weren’t for the riders, there would be no toy run! Arriving at the hospital parking garage, Texas Roadhouse again met us with a delicious lunch! They are always perfectly ready to serve the 500 or so participants, in a very timely manner. Volunteers from Texas Roadhouse in Durham and Fayetteville served up plates of BBQ, chicken, cole slaw, the best green beans ever, and rolls. They are a big supporter of Christmas In July and we appreciate it. Thanks again. For the first timers, the trip to the hospital is the highlight. This year we had a huge trailer donated by Parrot Bay Pools

to hold all the toys, stuffed animals, games, craft supplies, etc. that were donated. The line of volunteers to bring the toys in went out the door. The pile was huge! Staff from the hospital spoke, telling how important these donations are. Sixteen different departments will benefit from these donations. In addition, Theresa Cromley, the Safe Kids Coordinator from Durham County, informed us that some of the monies are spent to save children. Car seats, gunlocks, and other safety devices are purchased for families. This was news to me and adds yet another dimension to what this day is all about, protecting and saving children. One of our own, Ponce Chavis spoke about the 30 days he and his family were at the hospital themselves, with a critically ill newborn daughter and wife. As he said, all of us know of someone who needs hospital care at one time or another. That is why we do this. Back at Ft. Bragg Harley, the fun begins again with more raffles, auctions, food, and music. This year we had Shoogers Donuts and Not Jes Subs for sale. Yum! A neon sign and portable poker table were auctioned off and raffle tickets sold. Raffle prizes included a new tire, new helmet, leather jacket, t-shirts, gift cards, tools and tool kits for bikes, folding HD chairs, lots of other items and the final auction a pair of Joe Walsh tickets! Music by 3rd Degree and Python rocked, with Double D providing sound tech support. As usual (thanks Dave) it was a wonderful day for a wonderful cause.

Escort To Honor And Respect By Star Munsey There are only a few days in our lives that are so momentous they warrant special “pomp and circumstance” to significantly acknowledge the occasion. If we are fortunate, others will celebrate with us, and show their support for us. A few such milestones that come to mind are our birthday, graduations, and weddings days. Saturday, July 16th was one of those momentous days for Marine Corporal Garrett J. Carnes and his family in Burlington, NC. This was the day Homes for Our Troops gave this beautiful young family the keys to their new home. This is a very special home. This home is mortgage-free, and is specially adapted with carefully planned modifications and customizations to make it easily navigable, accessible, and comfortable for Garrett. It is a house that, in his words, will allow him to be the “man of the house again.” It is a home they will raise their kids in, land they will hunt and grow on, and a community they will become a part of from this day forward. Cpl Carnes lost both legs as a result of injuries sustained while selflessly and bravely serving our country in Afghanistan on Feb 19, 2012. A seemingly routine patrol changed his life, when he stepped on a pressure plate improvised explosive device (IED). Members of the biker community from as far away as Florida rode here to show their appreciation and support for Cpl Carnes and provide him with a grand welcome home and personal escort to his new home. Riders from all backgrounds and clubs such as the Defenders MC, Combat Veterans MA, PGR, Iron Legacy MC, and Patriotic Riders RC united and provided an honorable escort. The vast majority of the biker community are veterans of the military, they are ones who truly understand the sacrifice demanded by service to the country and the toll it that it takes on a service member and their family. That is why I am not surprised that these bikers worked together for the sole purpose of saying THANK YOU. Local Law Enforcement provided extra support by blocking traffic along the motorcycle escort route, ensuring Cpl Carnes never had to stop on his way to his new future. The Carnes family pulled up in the driveway of their new

home, a group of over 100 people gathered, waving flags, ringing patriotic bells, and cheering for the new homeowners as they approached the home. There was a large tent for the ceremony, set up complete with chairs for participants to get out of the sun or the coming rain. Not only were the bikers there to show their respect, but there was also a large crowd gathered from the local community to hear his friends and leaders of the community (including the Mayor) talk about Garrett. They talked about his being a loving father, a strong husband, and his leadership of those men with him. Summed up, he is a leader of men, and a true warrior. As the ceremony progressed, we moved over to the front of the house where there was a tall flagpole. Along with the representatives from Homes For Our Troops, the Carnes family proudly raised the American Flag in front of their new home and too an extra moment, taking it all in, before they ceremoniously cut the yellow Homes For Our Troops ribbon and welcomed everyone into their new home. The rest of the time people streamed in an out of the home, enjoyed Texas Roadhouse for lunch, some cool ice cones, and concluded the day knowing our presence today, our support of this charity, and our love and appreciation of this special man mattered. As I sit here this evening and sort through photos to share of this event, and write this article I pulled up https://www. hfotusa.org/building-homes/veterans/carnes/ and it made me smile… and choke up a bit with joy that his page now reads, “Mission Accomplished on July 16, 2016.” Yes, indeed! Statesville HOG Chapter #3548 30th Anniversary Story and photo by Alan Dockery The middle of June lots of bikers rode in to Tilley Harley-Davidson, Statesville, NC, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first Harley Owners Group chapter in North Carolina. Several of the 43 H.O.G. Chapter #3548 charter members were there to tell stories about rides and events over the last 30 years. As the story is told that on a sunny May afternoon in 1986, Cotton Moore took a chair, pad and pencil, and went outside and sat under a shade tree. He said, “Y’all line up, give me ten bucks we are starting a club.” Bikers lined up behind Tommie Holmes and the first North Carolina H.O.G. Chapter started. Thirteen charter members still belong. “Harley-Davidson started the Harley Owners Group and we had lots of people interested so we started the first chapter in the state,” said Robinette Tilley. “We had some really good members, some who are still with the chapter. Don and I could see how this brings people

out to ride and have fun.” Folks were glad to see Robinette and share stories and smiles. We miss Don, who we lost in a motorcycle accident two years ago. Please keep Robinette and the Tilley family in your prayers. According to Cindy Henderson, Chapter Director, seven of the charter members were at the 30th anniversary and we signed up four new members. “The Harley Owners Group is about riding and friendship,” Cindy said. “We have rides almost every weekend and we often attend other folks’ events. A couple benefits of being in the chapter are making new friends and having fun together. Tilley’s is a wonderful sponsoring dealership and has been supportive from the beginning. Our biggest event is the toy run in October. It helps the children in the Celeste Henkel School community.” “We had special patches made for the Statesville H.O.G. Chapter’s 30th Anniversary. Blinded?

Have you ever been riding down the road, and had a bug or a pebble pop you in the eye? Not only does it hurt like crazy, but it will blind you. Webster’s Dictionary defines blinded as “unable to see, or lacking sight”. Usually in the context of our spiritual walk, many times the Word of God refers to “sight”. Matthew 15:13 Jesus said, (13) “every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. (14) Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. and if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch”. Now I’m sure we have all heard the phrase “blind leading the blind”. This is still the greatest country in the world, but sometimes we as a nation stray so far from God it’s dangerous. Now unless you live under a rock you have heard all the debating going on between candidates for many offices in this great land. I have yet to hear one say they would ask God to restore our nation. This is a form of that blindness Matthew spoke of. A good cure for spiritual blindness is to read the Word, pray, and seek God. If you don’t know how to pray, just talk to God. He won’t strike you down if you mess up. Read “His” Word. It is alive and will heal your blindness. Put on the armor of God daily to protect yourself and equip you for your daily walk. Most of all, if you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, ask Him into your heart today.

Wear your glasses when you ride, and read the Word to protect your sight. And when all else fails try Jesus

PGR Mission For Daniel Marthers By: Wally Wersching Sergeant First Class Daniel Marthers was a US Army veteran who served in Vietnam during the late 1960’s. He was in the Army for eleven years, and was awarded the Purple Heart five times. Afterward, he worked at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs with other veterans and their families as a Trauma Specialist. Daniel was 100% disabled, and worked with other disabled veterans. Daniel married Phyllis, had a couple of sons, a daughter, and five grandchildren. He was 69 years old when he passed. I was notified about the PGR mission for him, and decided to go. The Rock Springs Baptist Church is only a few miles from home. I left home about 12:30PM heading south on Rte. 18. When I got to John Crawford Road, I forced myself to turn onto John Crawford Road – it was a gravel road. After a mile or so, it turned into a paved road. It was one of those real back roads where they pave it but don’t paint any stripes on it. It also was very narrow with the occasional home on either side. It would be difficult to encounter another car coming at you on the road. I felt like I was really in the backcountry. The church was on top of a hill, and we parked together on the side in the gravel portion of the lot. After I parked, we all got acquainted. We were waiting for a small group to escort Daniel from the Blakely Funeral Home in Gaffney, SC to the church. Before long, we heard the sound of approaching motorcycles, and then we saw the four bikers in front of the hearse. The hearse parked, and we were asked to assist as pallbearers. Daniel was a big guy. As the casket was removed from the hearse, we all stood at attention and saluted the fallen soldier. The pallbearers put the oversized casket onto the dolly so it could be easily rolled into the church for the service. We were given our flags for the flag line. Most of us stood in the shade but a couple had to stand in the hot sun. Luckily there was a breeze or it would have been hard to bear. When the service started, we were invited into the church

hall for refreshments. We were a little uneasy about going inside where it was air-conditioned, as it would make the rest of the mission seem even hotter. We all went inside the church hall, and had something to eat. Some had a full meal. They had a huge spread along with delicious desserts. We could hear the service for Daniel over a speaker in the hall. Many of his friends stood to talk about how Daniel had changed their lives. It sounded as if Daniel was a very caring man. The church was filled with his friends and family. When the service was over, we reestablished the flag line at the gravesite. There was a very small cemetery in back of the church hall. Luckily, there was a narrow paved road that went around the hall to the cemetery so they had no problems getting Daniel to his final resting place. Again we assisted the pallbearers to place Daniel onto the lowering mechanism. I was surprised to see only two men in uniform as Daniel’s Honor Guard. There was no volley, but taps was played. The two men folded the flag, and presented it to Daniel’s wife, Phyllis. Daniel’s close family was under the shade of the canopy but his friends stood far away in the shade of the trees, and the church hall. It was very hot in the sun. When the burial service was over, we slowly walked back to the truck to give back our flags. We chatted for a short time, and then said good-bye – until we meet again when we honor another departed veteran.

By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, June 25 was the date for the latest Gold Wing Road Rider Association of South Carolina “Plaque Attack”. This attack brought riders from all over South Carolina to Anderson, SC, where the Host Chapter “A” Anderson planned the event at Harbor Bay Seafood. The weather was sunny and hot. The temperature was around 98º F. Did I mention it was HOT? As far as I’m concerned, everybody in attendance deserved some kind of an award for riding in that extreme heat. However, the temperature in the restaurant was cool and comfortable. The food was very good and the prices were right. It was a good choice of a place to meet and that is where the Anderson, SC Chapter holds their monthly meetings. There were a total of 10 Chapters present from Anderson, Easley, Charleston, Rock Hill, Clemson, Spartanburg, Greenwood, Greenville, Columbia, and Newberry. Only two chapters were not represented – the Aiken Chapter “Q” and Myrtle Beach Chapter “J”. All of the Chapters represented amounted to 91 members in attendance. There were various awards given out. Newberry received the Silver Award, Columbia the Bronze Award, and Charleston the Gold Award. The Plaque computation placed Newberry in 3rd, Columbia in 2nd and Charleston in 1st. Shown with Plaque is the Charleston Chapter Director Mike Melton from the TriCounty Wings Chapter “G”. Congratulations to Charleston.

8th Annual Returning Warriors Motorcycle Escort By: Bill Gallaway This year there were 40 Marines from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina that arrived in the upstate of South Carolina to participate in a week of relaxation and recognition. On Monday, June 20th, approximately 130 motorcyclists also arrived in Easley, SC to welcome home and escort the motorcade of Marines to Keowee Key in Salem, SC. Those that rode the route on this first day of summer experienced sunny skies and temperatures in the high 80’s with high humidity. The route from Easley traveled through Liberty, Norris, Central, Clemson, and Seneca, where they were greeted by thousands of flag waving Americans who were showing their support for these Marines and all those that put their lives on the line every day. The day ended with a recognition supper of BBQ and all the fixings for the cyclists at the Light House Restaurant on Lake Keowee. This is the eighth year that host families welcomed the Marines into their homes for four days of recreation and relaxation. While they were here they got to play golf, archery, tennis, swim, fish, water ski, Jet Ski, and go tubing. In between,

they visited with their host families and attended some local Veterans recognition events. It’s through events like this that we can show our support and thanks to active service Marines. The nonprofit Communities 4 Warriors/Communities 4 Marines, the Keowee Key Community and the Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital, which is part of the Greenville Hospital System, make this event possible. Many thanks go to The Lighthouse Restaurant, Skin Daddy’s, Yuppers, and to all involved in this event. “Semper Fi”.
