It is the beginning of our 3rd DECADE of publishing the best motorcycle magazine in North and South Carolina and we have no intention of quitting anytime soon. A lot has changed in the years since we began this journey. We went from working out of our house (Wild Thing used to work sitting cross-legged on our bed), interviewing potential sales people and advertisers at our kitchen table, to an office, and then a larger office. My son, Lincoln, who has been with us the whole time, has taken over all of the layout and graphic design work as well as most of the stuff that I used to do. Renea Brown has been our office administrator for over 12 years and is the first person that you will talk to when you call our office. Molly sold her Sportster and has been riding her ’99 Road Queen for 18 years! The Fat Boy is history and now I ride a Cosmic Purple 2000 Road King. But one thing has not changed. We strive to make every issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine the best we have ever published. We cover more events and distribute more magazines to more locations in North and South Carolina than anyone else. No one else is even close! Thursday Night Is Bike Night At Lucky’s Saloon By: Scott Wicker ike Night at Lucky’s Saloon in Burlington. NC has taken on a whole new meaning. It just isn’t beer specials and a place to hang out. Starting in July of 2017, Kristi Bettini, Melissa Moody, Gina Davis, and Monica Loy redefined what a bike night is supposed to be. The girls, also known as Lucky’s Charms, began a series of events in addition to the happenings of a regular bike night. The girls started with bike games that are probably not a part of most regular bike nights. According to the ladies, Lucky’s is the only bar in North Carolina that bike games are a part of their bike night activities. Some of the events the girls have put on are the wiener bite, balloon toss, the slow race, and road kill, which is the passenger on each bike picking up stuffed animals with a fishing net. Some of the events require a lot of skill. Shoot the can is having the passenger on the back shoot at a beer can at a designated spot with a Nerf Gun. Some of the other highly skilled

events include hit the shitter, the waitress carry, the tire toss, and the girls say there are lots more to come. They added a very unique event in July where the passenger on the back carries a spoon in each hand with hard boiled eggs them. The driver of the bike tries to go easily over a speed bump and the rider has to try keep the eggs from falling out of the spoons. Trust me, it’s not as easy as it may sound. Along with all of the fun, Barry Hicks and his staff at Lucky’s always have something great to eat on bike nights. It is a must to get there early. The parking lot is packed and normally it is standing room only inside and outside the bar. Along with the bike games and great food there are giveaways, raffles of all sorts, and D.J. Cleve Caviness. Lucky’s is also conscious of the needs of the community giving back in many areas. They have helped to raise money for back to school programs, tornado relief, supporting veterans, and many more. They have also looked to local businesses for support. Businesses that have helped with the bike night activities and supporting the before mentioned charities are Lucky’s Saloon, Down Home Harley-Davidson, The Bob Karney Law Firm, Wings To Go and Jim Upchurch, The Elite Cruisers, The Broken Chains Biker Ministry, Yesterday’s Grill and Karen Thompson, and Outback Steak House. Make plans to join everyone at Lucky’s Saloon every Thursday night for great fun! Make plans to attend their 2018 Bike Night Finals on Saturday, October 13th starting at 2 pm for lots of food, fun, and awards to be given away. Yeah, we know Ronnie has retired but Robinette Tilley told me it will always be Ronnie’s Bash. He was there smiling and shaking hands, too. The Bash started as just something for bikers to do on a summer Sunday afternoon. For years, The Bash has drawn riders from across the Carolinas just to come hang out for a while. It was great seeing folks I’ve known since my first summer back in North Carolina and new friends I’ve met out riding recently. Once you got parked and waved to friends, you could go inside for a little cool air and some great deals on motorcycles and gear. There were big sales discounts for The Bash. Bikers could get some hot tasty Lancaster’s BBQ and a cold beer or soda for lunch and sit in the shade of the big tent. Anna’s Sweet Treats was serving up goodies for when your tongue was tuned for that. Rockie Lynne played that afternoon so a bunch of folks were there to hear his band. They play lots of patriotic songs, praising the military, police, fire fighters, and those who live and work to serve other Americans. He is a co-founder of the Tribute To The Troops organization. Rockie was friends with Iredell County Deputy Corporal Bill Wood who died in a motorcycle crash recently. Yeah, we know Bill was scouting routes for the Ronnie has retired group’s fall ride. As I sat under the tent eating but Robinette Tilley told me it BBQ, folks were quiet and listening to Rockie sing about will always be American heroes. Good thing Ronnie’s Bash. we had lots of napkins, because folks were wiping away more than just sweat from their eyes. The band’s first set was so moving and a great tribute to Bill. The next set was more upbeat and rockin’ country style. Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer, and some of the calendar ladies were handing out goody bags. Southern Distilling was there pouring samples of their liquid goodies. Robinette Tilley stopped by to greet old friends and talk for a while. She was looking good. Folks love to see her out and smiling at the dealership once in a while. Black Cat Harley-Davidson’s Bike Night

The 10th of August was Black Cat HarleyDavidson’s monthly bike night, and if you missed it, brother did you miss a party. They had vendors selling beautiful handmade jewelry, and Miss Gail sewing on patches. There were members of the Nam Knights MC with some really cool flag mounts for your scoot made out of, you guessed it, inert training grenades. Well, you probably didn’t guess that! The Christian Motorcycle Assn was set up to give us all the Good Word. They are a great bunch of folks and I always enjoy talking with them about Our Lord. The Blue Knights MC were selling hot dogs and cold beer and always had a line of patrons. They even had 98.5 The Big Dog set up with a live broadcast. Yup, they had all the makings of a great time, but I have saved the best for last. Hank Williams Jr, 4 wheel drive, gonna shoot my guns! They had ‘’All My Rowdy Friends’’ playing! Now, if you haven’t had the pleasure of listening to this awesome band, then you really are missing out. If you love Hank Jr and classic country, and classic rock then you have got to find where they are playing next and get yourself there! When lead vocalist, Frank Morrow, starts to sing, you would swear you were looking and listening to Hank Jr. This band’s sound is really tight. Frank’s wife Sandy has a beautiful voice that can belt out vocals as well as any contemporary female vocalist out there. You have Chris Williams on guitar, Scott Vancell

on Bass, Ray Holmes guitar, Mike Kenzy on, as I was told, piano and anything else, Scott Cox on drums. and the man that pulls all this sound together Will Tell on sound. They are just a great band and have opened for many famous acts all over the country. I want to give you some background on the new management at Black Cat. Chaz Cole is the General Manager. He has brought the knowledge of having grown up in his family’s dealerships his whole life. Rollin’ On The River At The Roost Story and photo by Alan Dockery ummer showers couldn’t keep bikers away from Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC, on the second weekend of August. That’s Rollin’ On The River weekend and traditionally a fund raising time for veterans’ issues. Well, this year the Ya Yas were playing Saturday night and a local soldier was the focus of the charity efforts. Plus, Dave had been teasing us that he had some big news. For weeks, Roost owners Dave and Pam Lucas had been letting folks know this would be a special weekend. It was in a few ways. We

met Chance Cleary who would benefit from our fund raising efforts. And got to know Donald Kluttz the new partner. Plus, we enjoyed time with long-time Roosters, newbies who were back for their second or third time, and Roost virgins. Robbie and Lynn came in from the coast to join the fun they had been reading about in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Yeah, there were a few summer showers Friday night and Saturday morning, but not enough to matter much. Dave had folks singing along in the game room. Tim was rocking the bunk house. We were dancing in the rain. Before folks started partying or hanging around the campfires, Dave gathered us to meet the new partner. Donald Kluttz of Lincolnton, NC, recently bought out one of the founding brothers. He will be living in the other house and helping Dave maintain and upgrade The Roost. Look for some improvements to bring a few things up to more modern standards. Cabin upgrades, such as heat and A/C, are coming. “I started coming up last year,” Donnie said. “Immediately fell in love with the place. Then came more and more often. The Roost is heaven away from home. The Roost has magic. I found magic here. I’m going to help bring back the magic. I want other people to see that. Want it to be a good time here for everybody.” Donnie sure had a good time that weekend. Pam had a great, big breakfast ready Saturday morning so you got a belly full to start the day. That afternoon it was some tasty BBQ and fixings. I love Elk Creek and usually fish, swim, sit, and pan for pretty rocks at The Roost instead of go riding. Well, there is a road nearby I enjoy and still figuring out how to get there and back. I think I got it down to only a quarter mile of four lane next time. So, early Saturday I lead a group to ride the Cock’s Comb. Miles of pretty country road leading to the real fun. The Cock’s Comb hugs the side of a mountain and has very few side roads or driveways. One after another sweet, lowgear curves. Roller Coasters, Dive Bombs, Strafing Runs, and Dog Fight moves. Less than two hour ride so we were back in time for lunch. Saturday afternoon we got down to the fund raising part of

the weekend. With overcast skies and brief light sprinkles, it wasn’t a good day to play in the creek. A few of us got wet and caught some fish, but it was a better day to play around the pavilion. Tara ran the Cornhole contest with several teams ready to play. If John can get a few points, Tara is tough to beat. But Chris and Sarah put them bags in the hole for the tourney win. While they played out the last Cornhole matches Dave ran the Duck Race. Eugene missed the race since he was tossing a game, but his little pink duck was first across the finish line. Everybody won at the Dunk Tank. The rest of the afternoon was as pretty as it gets at The Roost as folks hung at their camps and started fires for the evening. The sky was clearing and we were sitting back talking about what a nice day it had been. That evening was a band I wanted to see. If you weren’t there, you missed seeing the Ya Yas at The Roost. Yeah, party bands are fine, but sometimes I want to see a band that makes me bring a chair and stay down front for all the sets. I even turned my chair around and grooved to the sky. It was mountain air clear, no moon, no clouds. I could see the Milky Way and lots of falling stars while still singing along. The Ya Yas play bluesy Americana mountain folk music. Sandy smiled for days after seeing them. The focus of the weekend was to help a new Rooster, Chance Cleary. He is a U.S. Soldier, injured in Afghanistan and lost his lower right leg. During the band break we drew the 50 / 50 and I think he won it. It is hard to remember things once the band starts, but I remember the drawing for the liquor wagon. Donnie won the first drawing and just pulled a few bottles of his favorite and said, “Draw again.” Jeff from the Rolling Saints RC won. Lots of veterans go to The Roost. Most of us don’t talk about our service much. But that weekend is dedicated to veterans’ charities. We could not have picked a better person to help. I sat down with Chance and a fishing pole Sunday morning to talk. Hope to see this humble and simple living man there for years to come. He rides and is adapting his bike to be safer. “Two years ago, I went from my cabin to do laundry and met Pam,” Chance said. “I was making and selling wreaths from the vines I cut down in the woods. Pam was interested in buying a couple wreaths. She started telling me about their place. I told her I was always up for giving a hand if they needed help.” “My Mom, April, started coming up here. Mom and Pam got to talking and put on this benefit for me. I can’t express how awesome this is. I love it up here. Pam and I are more bonded now. I feel like part of the Roost family. People are so friendly and nice and welcoming. Always open for conversation, small talk, and laughs. I love the opportunity to come here. I am so grateful for what they have done.” Chance was an 11 Bravo, Infantry. It takes ground troops to take and hold territory. He shipped out Valentines’ Day 2011, graduated top of his basic training class, proved he wanted

it, and was chosen for Airborne School. First assignment was Fort Richardson, Alaska. Chance’s unit was shipped out by the end of the year. “I was just now in the Army. Here we go. Combat. This is what I signed up for,” he said. “I’ll never forget when we landed at Bagram,” Chance said. “We got a rocket shot at us. That was intense. My first time in a war zone and here we go, rockets already! We went to our Combat Outpost and had to fix it up. We started doing patrols in our area. On March ninth, four days after my 20th birthday, I got in my first fire fight. That s---t was real!” “May sixth I was planned for a dismounted night mission but switched with another guy. We were doing route clearance and taking money to the Afghan Army. We were there to make sure things went smoothly and they got their money. On the way out, we were told we forgot something. Had to turn around. Coming back out, they blew us up,” Chance said. He was driving a MaxxPro MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) Vehicle. That is a massive, heavily armored, V-Hull vehicle designed to protect soldiers from many types of attack. The explosion was so big it destroyed the MRAP and killed one of the soldiers. Blew the engine out of the frame. It was later determined the Improvised Explosive Device was 275 pounds. 1,700 feet of wire was spliced together to detonate the bomb that had been in the ground for a year. “What an amazing and emotional weekend,” Dave and Pam said. “Our Roost Family never ceases to amaze us with your generosity and love. We’ve come together for a common cause, to help an awesome young man. We owe a special thank you to everyone who donated a bottle for the liquor wagon raffle which was completely full. Thanks to those who used their creativity to donate items for the silent auction and door prizes and to the ones that took time out of their busy day to sell raffle tickets or ask other businesses to donate, to those who cooked and served the delicious meals, to the ones who worked endlessly with all the games and activities to make sure the benefit was a success. Thank you to the Ya Yas for donating their time and talent by providing the awesome music. More importantly thank you to everyone who came out to support Chance with your kind words, acceptance, friendships, and contributions. As of today, we have raised $5,584 and will continue to have several other activities through September second to raise more funds for Chance. Our Roost family rocks and we love you all.”

Resisting The Devil

Bros and Bro-ettes The devil loves to make a playground out of our minds and imagination. He delights in filling senses and perception that captivate them and paralyze and destroy them. How can believers avoid falling victims to the devil’s attack? We must make a spiritual and mental decision to take charge of every thought that enters our mind. Mark 11:23: “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that those things he says will be done. He will have whatever he says.” Did you notice that Jesus said if a person confesses something and shall not doubt in his heart? In other words, if you believe what you are saying, you’ll have exactly what you’re saying. Jesus is saying that your heart and mouth should be in the same accord and don’t be thinking something else to not make it happen. Don’t differ, you can always make things happen. How many times have you heard someone say, “My head or stomach is killing me”? You keep on speaking it enough and you’ll make yourself sick. You have to be very careful of what you speak. If your mouth and heart together are in agreement that is called creative power. It means they’re together and makes things come together, or pass. It can bring healing into your body, but you have to careful cause the devil knows how to use it against you. He knows he can fill your mind and heart with all kinds of lies. He’ll have you convinced, and pretty soon you’re saying them with your mouth.

The devil knows he has to play with your mind and emotions together and then you’ll start believing what he wants you to. Matthew 12:34: “Brood of vipers! How can you being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”. So, according to Jesus, whatever is in your heart is eventually going to come out of your mouth. Because great power is released when your heart and mouth start working together. If you’re always complaining about not having things like, nothing good to eat, what are you speaking? Pray for it, believe, and have faith. Don’t turn around and say, “Well, I ain’t going to get it”. That’s taking your blessings away. I can write all this down for you, but it’s for me also. I’m guilty of saying negative things, and letting the devil get in just like the next person. Don’t make the mistake that so many of us have, and let the devil control your heart and mind. Decide who or what is going to control your mind. God and His word or the devil and his lies? Just remember what you say because words are powerful. Ephesians 4:23: “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” God’s words bring cleansing that washes our minds of all the filth of the world. I’m going to pray harder, with the help of the Lord, and do my best, not to let the devil overload my heart and mouth with things that shouldn’t be there to start with. What about you? Grateful Dog Festival VII Run

By: Ray Tracy On August 4th, Grateful Dog Festival VII Run started at Black Jack Harley-Davidson in Florence, South Carolina. In the past, the run was on the same day as the music festival, but some riders wanted to be able to take part in both the ride and the music festival, so out of gratitude for what the bikers had contributed in the past, the motorcycle event was moved to the following weekend. As a result, they have more than tripled last year’s run total in donations! The weatherman called for rain that day, but He answered prayers and gave us a day that was beautiful. The run/rally also has its own sponsor, Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group out of Myrtle Beach. Bikes started showing up at 10:30 for registration. Donations were being taken by three beautiful young ladies; Barbara Broad, Becky Rogers, and Mary Jones all from the Humane Society of Marlboro County. All proceeds from this event went to the Grateful Dog and they donate food, medi-

cines, doctor’s time, and help for Marlboro, Florence, and Darlington counties. Grateful Dog started seven or so years ago as the result of a passing conversation between Sam Rogers and local musician Doug Kite. The two agreed Florence could use some kind of good music festival and, both being longtime Dead fans, thought: Wouldn’t it be fun to somehow tie it in with Garcia’s birthday? Since its inception, the event has grown significantly, drawing thousands of people and generating more than $70,000 to aid the area’s homeless animal population. “Sure, it’s a lot of fun”, Rogers said, “But at the end of the day, we’re all here for the same reasons … we love our animals, and we want to raise as much money as we can for our area humane societies.” David Smith rode all the way from Statesville, North Carolina to enjoy the event with all of us. He pulled up on his trike with his 2 ½ year old collie named “Baby” on board. The first stop on the run was Mike’s Corner Bar And Grill in Darlington. Next we visited Shiners Bar in Coward and then on to Four Deuces where they had bike wash for anyone that wanted to participate. The last stop was Beyond Therapy.

Riding High To Hanging Rock

By: Buzz ny day is a good day to swing your leg over the bike and take a ride. When Mother Nature unleashes a week of down pouring rain, the day the rain stops is a REALLY good day to ride. Coincidentally, Riding High HarleyDavidson was hosting a ride to Hanging Rock State Park on August 11th, after the rain stopped, and it was a ride I couldn’t resist. Riding High Harley-Davidson has hosted successful rides all summer with no mission other than to just get out and ride

together. Registration opened at 9am and riders were greeted with coffee and Ducks Donuts as they signed in. Now, I’m a Krispy Kreme guy all day long, but Duck Donuts are pretty dang good and one donut was just not going to do it. A quick stroll around the showroom floor admiring the last of the 2018 models and I was headed out to the bike to get this ride started. Robin Saul, long time HOG member and friend of the dealership, was leading the ride and gave us some pre-ride info and then came the rumble. We headed up NC Hwy 68 through Oak Ridge, Stokesdale, Pine Knolls, Belews Creek, Walnut Cove, and Danbury to Hanging Rock State Park. It was a beautiful day and a leisurely ride up through the country to the park. Hanging Rock is less than an hour from Riding High Harley-Davidson, we stayed off the big slab the entire trip and it makes a great day ride. We parked and stretched our legs while we enjoyed the beautiful views of the Sauratown Mountains, nicknamed “The Mountains Away From The Mountains”. There are a few short hikes from the parking lot if anyone is interested in seeing a waterfall or if you are feeling energetic the summit is only a mile or so up from the parking lot. Our group elected to hangout by the bikes and chew the fat for a half hour before we headed back to the dealership. Women’s Freedom Ride 2018

By: WildThing he Women’s Freedom Ride is the brainchild and passion of a dynamo by the name of Karen Collins. She has managed to marry her love of riding to two distinct causes: to promote fellowship and support for women riders, encouraging them to extend their dreams of riding a motorcycle and her heartfelt desire to support veterans’ causes. This is not just a casual Saturday ride around the countryside, but a full-blown cross-country trip that has been repeated every year since 2013. The 2018 version followed a southern route, traversing 23 states in 18 days. They started out at premiere sponsor, Low Country HarleyDavidson in North Charleston, SC on June 2nd and headed south through Georgia and into Florida, landing in Madison

for the first night. Karen had about 30 women in her core group this year, meaning that they rode the whole route. By the way, not all of her core group were from Charleston, either. But they rode in from their home city/state to start out in Charleston and then ride the whole trip. These women all shoulder the cost of their trip so 100% of the funds raised go to the cause. Each year, Karen researches a different organization to be the recipient of their fundraising efforts on the ride. The organization must use 90%+ of their revenue toward their cause and support some facet of veteran care. This year’s qualified organization is the Independence Corps whose stated mission is to “help to restore injured American veterans their Independence, freedom, and dignity that comes

with greater mobility”. Specifically, the funds raised will be used to help purchase a prosthetic arm for a female vet who was injured and lost her arm while serving in Iraq. Also, they will be sponsoring the cost of a recreational retreat for five wounded vets and their caregivers. So, Karen plans fund-raising events at stops all along their ride, this year they had 19 events, many at Harley dealerships in their overnight stops. Karen told me that they had lots of people coming out to attend their events and their hosts did some fund raising for them ahead of their stop and held huge bike nights. For instance, at Fort Worth, TX the ladies came away with $5000 in donations. In Garden City, KS their host held the biggest event of the ride with a police escort, dinner with the mayor, his wife, the Police Chief, the Fire Chief, and music! In order to complete this schedule, the women ride several hundred miles each day through all kinds of weather. They ran into pouring rain in Florida, some tornadoes, and intense heat, like 110 degrees in the southwest along the border with Mexico. Karen compiles the itinerary in a book along with all riders’ information, planned route and all stops and all contacts. She has five ride captains, two in front, 1 mid, and 2 in back along with a chase truck. These are very capable women who were able to take over mid-ride this year when Karen suffered a collision with a deer in Colorado. She is back at home now recovering and happy that her crew completed the mission with flying colors.

As of the print schedule, the Women’s Freedom Ride 2018 has raised over $26,000 and some donations are still coming in. 3rd Annual Benefit For Autistic And Special Needs Children

By: Wally Wersching n July 28th, the Dixie Drifters hosted their 3rd Annual Benefit For Autistic And Special Needs Children. For a $10 donation, they offered either a hamburger or hot dog with a bag of chips. There was also a 50/50 drawing. All proceeds went to a local foundation to help the children. They also held a “Bug Run” at the same time with all proceeds of that going to the foundation, too. A “Bug Run” is just like a poker run in that you ride a pre-determined course, but there are no poker hands played. Instead, a target (sticker) is placed somewhere on the front of the motorcycle, and the object is to have as many bugs hit the target as possible during the ride. The charge was $5 for one sticker and $10 for three. There were a lot of bugs splattered that afternoon. I arrived at the clubhouse at 4446 Chapel Grove Rd in Gastonia about 2:30 pm and noticed a long row of motorcycles parked in front. There were also a couple vendors under their tents – a jewelry vendor and a t-shirt vendor. I smelled cooking meat and looked over the top of the clubhouse to see smoke rising. That’s where the cook was working. It was in the mid 90’s outside (in the shade). The sun made

it feel a lot hotter. I walked inside to give my donation. I talked with Bull and his young lady. It felt good to get inside the air-conditioning of the clubhouse. Once inside the clubhouse, I heard the band playing. They sounded good but way too loud. The room was too small for such a loud band. I couldn’t hear myself talking much less hearing what Bull was saying. I walked through to the back of the clubhouse to talk with the cook. He was cooking the hamburgers and hot dogs. It was hot leaning over the grill. All he asked for was a cold beer once in a while to keep him going! After talking with the cook and the President of the club, I walked around front to see what the vendors had to offer. The jewelry vendor had a little of everything from plain rings to the outrageous. I don’t wear any jewelry except my wedding ring and St. Christopher medal, so he couldn’t sell me anything. Then I walked to the t-shirt vendor. He had a little of everything, too. He even had a couple Victory motorcycle t-shirts on his rack. One I already own, and the other was from the 2005 Kyle Petty Ride Across America. We couldn’t come to an agreement on the price, so it stayed on his rack. In the front of the building, there were a few bikers sitting in the shade talking. They could still hear the music, but also could hear themselves talking. We talked for a while before I left. While I was walking back to the bike, I noticed a few classic cars in the lot. There was a Ford Falcon, Chevrolet Nova, and a beautiful 1967 Chevelle. Next time, I might drive my GTO to one of their events. I was glad that I went to help the needy children. elry, and other biker accessories that you come to expect. I made my rounds through the vendors and headed inside to take a look at the remaining 2018 models and cool off for a bit. Smokin’ has a great selection of new and pre-owned Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and all the accessories, it kept me busy for a good bit making sure I didn’t miss out on a deal. Xtreme Wings-N-Things brought down some beer tubs and a keg and Heather was slinging $1 draft beers and ice cold brews. Under the same tent, Xtreme had a grill set up where they were cooking up hamburgers (beef) with all the fixin’s and selling it with smoked mac-n-cheese and baked beans for $8. Lemme tell you, that was a popular tent! All the while any bearded man that entered the premises was petitioned to enter the beard competition and the Invaders rocked out on the far end of the porch, providing theme music for the afternoon. Dealer Principal and GM, Ray, along with Smokin’ Marketing Manager, Brother Bill, took a stroll through the bike show area with clipboards in hand and made the difficult decisions of who would ride away as a bike show winner. When they took the mic to make the announcement to the crowd, they had a special announcement. Instead of three bike show winners, they would announce that they had added a fourth winner! Young Serenity took home the 4th place prize with her Harley Style Electric Power Ride-on Motorcycle that was black with orange and red flames. Ray awarded her a cute grey stuff animal cat wearing a Harley-Davidson do rag. Anyone who had seen Serenity polishing her ride in the bike show section, knew she needed recognition! John Wright with his decked out black 2010 Yamaha Stratoliner Deluxe took home third place and $25. David Truitt won 2nd Place and $75 with a beautiful,

red, home built 1975 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead Chopper. Top prize was $150 and was taken home by Thomas Foushee with his sleek 2006 H-D Street Glide Custom. Moments after the Bike Show awards were handed out, it was time for the bearded contestants to be evaluated. Ray brought in the big guns to judge the beard competition. Jill Dyson, the Queen of Hustle, and Tabitha Stone took the mic and called up the beardos one at a time to decide a winner. The commentary from these ladies was hilarious as they judged the girth, length, and scent of each of the dozen contestants. There were beards of all lengths and color and these ladies had a tough job on their hands. Blair Bear and Kyle Kretchman were selected as the 1st and 2nd runner up and John Finney took home $100 and top honors with the finest beard on the lot! The party raged on. Most of it moving up the hill to Xtreme Wings-N-Things where Crazy Dave was already jamming on the porch and the bar was full of thirsty patrons. It was an awesome day and I want to thank the staff and management of Smokin’ and Xtreme for putting on a great event. Speedway Harley-Davidson 5th Anniversary By: Rose and Lloyd n July 21st Speedway Harley-Davidson celebrated their 5th Anniversary with Amiee Thomas as owner and operator. It was a beautiful day for a celebration. There was food provided by Speedway HOG Chapter, music provided by The Jill Goodson Band, icecream from Freddy’s Frozen Custard, and beer from 26 Acres Brewery. The Harley-Davidson Demo fleet was there and there were always riders taking test rides on the 2018 models. The marketing Director, Nichola Dow, and Amiee always put a lot in to a great day for their custom-

ers. The whole team at Speedway Harley-Davidson is like a family. They always have a smile and friendly conversation, showing their true appreciation to all their customers. We are there for events and we see how friendly and happy everyone is. They try to make everyone happy, and have the bike they

want. Their next event will be the annual Arzie Rogers Toy Ride. The Date is Saturday November 17th and the rain date is Sunday, November 18th, 2018. It starts at the Annapolis Intimidators Stadium. 14th Annual Antique Bikes On Main By: Wally Wersching he 14th Annual “Antique Bikes On Main” was held on July 27th, 28th, and 29th. The last weekend in July has usually been the hottest weekend of the summer but this year it was comfortable on both Saturday and Sunday with plenty of sun, and temps in upper 80’s to low 90’s. The small southern town of Chesnee, SC was the place to be if you love old motorcycles. The festival started as a one-day event with the Sunday Antique Bike Show On Main Street (Rte. 221). It has grown into a three-day event with the swap meet on Friday evening, all day Saturday, and the bike show on Sunday. The Chesnee City Fest is held on all three days, too. There are many free concerts and shows throughout the weekend. Dennis Harris from Chesnee Classic Cycle and the city of Chesnee are responsible for the growth, and promotion of the event. The main attraction for this year was again the “Wall of Death” which is also known as a “Motordrome”. The very first carnival Motordrome appeared at Coney Island amusement

park in 1911. The following year portable tracks began to appear in traveling carnivals. By 1915 the first “silodromes” with vertical walls appeared and were soon dubbed the “Wall Of Death.” The audience views from the top of the drum, looking down. The riders start at the bottom, in the center, and ascend an initial ramped section until they gain enough speed to drive horizontally to the floor on the walls. One of the riders in the “Wall Of Death” is Wahl E. Walker. He has been riding in silodromes for many years and is the oldest man to continuously ride in one. He’s in his late 60’s. The members of the local “Legends Chapter” of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) were so impressed with him that they announced that Wahl will be their 2018 “Legend Of The Year” for his contributions to the world of motorcycles. They made a plaque for him along with his name on the “Legends Of The Year” trophy next to other “Legends Of The Year”, Motor Maid: Betty Fauls (daughter of M.M. co-founder Dot Robinson) and drag racing legend: Pete Hill. I arrived at about 10 am on Saturday. I stopped to visit with Dennis. He was very busy making sure that everything ran smoothly. Then I noticed that there were a lot of Indian motorcycles across the street under a large tent. Mark Moses from Indian of Charlotte brought some of the new Indian models along with some of his extensive vintage Indian motorcycle collection. I saw that the “Wall Of Death” show was about to start, so I walked up to watch. It was hard to see with all the people crowded around the top of the silo. There isn’t much light in the silo, and they are going very fast. I tried to take a video but it came out blurry. After the go-kart came back down to the center, they announced that one of the boards on the ramp broke, and it would take a while to fix - so the show was delayed for a while. That same thing happened on Friday night,

and the biker fell. I walked around the swap-meet field and saw many interesting parts and motorcycles. Everything was for sale. As I passed each tent, I could hear the owner and customer talking about a specific part that the customer needed. It’s hard to sell at a swap meet. If you sell early, you might be selling too cheap, but if you wait til the end, you might just have to bring the stuff home again. The buyers face the same dilemma. Do you buy early or wait til the end? If it’s a rare part that you need to complete a project bike, how much will you spend? No matter what, it’s always fun. Later, I walked to the field down the street to see the amusement rides. It was like a carnival. All rides were free! The food vendors were ready to serve their delicious treats, and the clothing vendors were also ready to sell anything and everything. The stage was set up to host the many live bands scheduled. When I walked back to the event headquarters, I was pleased to see the legend himself, Pete Hill, had brought one of his famous drag bikes. He really knew how to build those old Harley Knuckleheads to produce all that power. I left a little after 11:00 and took Cindy out for lunch. On Sunday, I left home about 9:30 am. I arrived in Chesnee at about 10:15 am. I was glad that I rode because it was very comfortable with temps in the 70’s, and plenty of Carolina blue skies. This time, I parked on Main Street in front of the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA) tent. There was already a Victory there so I parked “Miss Vickie” next to it. I never did meet the owner. I would have liked to compare Victory stories. I walked down Main Street to see the old bikes. I actually walked up and down Main Street a few times because there were bikes coming in a steady stream, and I didn’t want to miss any. In the show, there were many Harley’s – Flatheads, Knuckleheads, Panheads, and Shovelheads. It was like seeing old friends. There were many other makes in the show, too, like Triumph, BSA, Norton, BMW, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, and Kawasaki. There was even a Suzuki RE-5 with a Wankel rotary engine that was only made for a couple years in the mid 70’s. There were as many unusual bikes across the street as in the show. I was in “Motorcycle Heaven”! At a little before noon, I walked to the “Wall Of Death”, and watched as Wahl and Sarge put on a special performance for

Dennis. He had been so busy that he didn’t have time to take in a show, so they put on a small one just for him. At the bottom were two motorcycles, and a go-kart. During the next 15 minutes, the two men rode the motorcycles, and drove the go-kart on the walls while snatching dollar bills from the fingers of the spectators. It was very exciting, and loud. It also looked like all the men were having a good time. There was a young boy standing next to me thoroughly enjoying himself. Every time the bike would come close, his eyes were wide with excitement. It made the show better for me just watching the boy’s face. When walking around, I met a few old friends. The Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) Legends Chapter had a booth where Bud was explaining the benefits of joining the chapter to anyone passing by. They’ve been around since 1940. For more info on them, go to Motor Maids on Facebook. I couldn’t believe all the motorcycles. They were everywhere, and more were rolling in every minute. Main Street was not closed during the event so regular traffic, including semi-tractor trailers, was slowly driving past all the bikes and spectators. I headed home a little after noon. There was still a steady line of bikes riding to the event. My arm got tired waving at them, as we passed each other. It was a great way to spend a Sunday. I’ll do it again next year.

Edgecombe County Ghost Riders Anniversary By: Johnny Reb he rain did not dampen the spirits of the Ghost Riders MC as many chapters of the Ghost Riders Nation descended on the Edgecombe chapter to help them celebrate their Anniversary. August 3rd the party started and it was nonstop until the last scoot left on the 5th. It was a time for hanging out with old friends and meeting some new ones. Speaking of new ones, Nash Co. even patched out a new Ghost Rider for everyone to get to know. It is good to know that a younger generation is coming up to take over from us old gray beards. It was great to see almost everyone show up on their putts and not in cages. Too many times I go to these get together and the yard is filled with cars and a few bikes. Rain or not, MC stands for motorcycle club! The Edgecombe Chapter Pres Fast Eddie opened the clubhouse to everyone and all the members and their wives worked hard to make sure everybody had a good time. A Ghost Rider from Duplin Co. hit a hole in Farmville and tore his bike up. Luckily, he held onto it, but the bike suffered pretty bad damage. Remember that sometimes that dark spot in the road can turn out to be a hole in the road that can really mess you up. The main thing is that our friend Pushstart is OK and the bike will be repaired. 9th Annual Bikers 4 Boobs Ride

Registration started at 9 am, but riders kept trickling in until just after 11. This year the ride went through Stokesdale, Summerfield, Oak Ridge and other communities in northern Guilford and Rockingham Counties. After a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner sung by Troi Nance, and a blessing on all of the riders, and a brief safety announcement by Guilford County Sheriff’s Deputy Whittley, the command to fire ‘em up was given. One hundred twenty six (+or-) bikes went on the beautiful 72 mile ride. Jill Cobb rode her pink motorcycle with her Yorkie in the carrier along with another friend from Holly Springs, NC to participate in Bikers 4 Boobs. Both motorcycles had pink bras fastened across the windshields. Jill said that they participate in several breast cancer benefit rides each year. Organizer, Fay Morgan, asked for all the survivors to gather at the pink fire truck for a photo op, but after the ride returned to Riding High Harley-Davidson, nearly everyone hit the bathrooms and split. Three thousand dollars was raised to today and $160,000 total has benefited Randolph Hospital Mammography Fund which was established in 2010 to fund free screening mammograms for uninsured and under-insured women. “Big Thank You to everybody that came out this year and supported us. Next year will be the Big 10 for us,” Fay said, “I hope to blow it out of the water!” Since its establishment, the Mammography Fund has provided over 2,400 Mammograms for women in our community! Two bikers, Billy Joe and Bubba, were out riding when they noticed their gas tanks were getting low, so they stopped at a local gas station to fill up. After topping off the tank, they went inside to pay, where they noticed a big sign on the desk: ASK ABOUT OUR FREE SEX CONTEST! “Hey, what’s that all about?” Billy Joe asked the attendant. “Oh, that’s something new we just started,” the attendant replied. “The way it works is that I think of a number, and if you guess it, you get free sex.” Billy Joe and Bubba thought that was a pretty good idea, so they each took a guess. “I’ll say eight,” said Billy Joe. “Sorry,” said the attendant. “It’s four.” “I’ll try five,” said Bubba. “Nope. It’s two,” the attendant replied. “But hey, come back and try again.” Billy Joe and Bubba walked away, disappointed, but they were determined to give it another try. And so the next time they were low on gas, they stopped in again. And again. After about a month, they decided to give it one last try. “Six,” Billy Joe said to the attendant. “It’s gotta be six.” “I’m really sorry,” said the attendant. “It was nine this time.” “Okay, I guess three,” said Bubba. “Oh, you were close,” said the attendant. “It was two.” And so, the two disappointed bikers walked back to their bikes. “You know,” said Billy Joe, “I’m beginning to think that contest is rigged!” “No,” sighed Bubba. “It’s for real. My wife’s won seven times already.” A good old Alabama boy won a bass boat in a raffle drawing. He brought it home and his wife looks at him and says, “What you gonna do with that?! There ain’t no water deep enough to float a boat within 100 miles of here. “He says, “I won it and I’m a-gonna keep it. “His brother came over to visit several days later. He sees the wife and asks where his brother is. She says, “He’s out there in his bass boat”, pointing to the field behind the house. The brother heads out behind the house and sees his brother in the middle of a big field sitting in a bass boat with a fishing rod in his hand. He yells out to him, “What are you doin’?” His brother replies, “I’m fishin’. What does it look like I’m a doin’?” His brother yells, “It’s people like you that give people from Alabama a bad name, makin’ everybody

The women were asked, “How many of you love your husband?” All the women raised their hands. Then they were asked, “When was the last time you told your husband you loved him?” Some women answered today, a few yesterday, and some couldn’t remember. The women were then told to take out their cell phones and text their husband - “I love you, Sweetheart.” Next the women were instructed to exchange phones with one another and read aloud the text message they received in response to their message. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the collar of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, all under the eyes of her screaming parents. A biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain, the lion jumps back, letting go of the girl, and the biker brings the girl to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, “Sir, that was the most gallant and bravest thing I’ve seen a man do in my whole life.” The Harley rider replies, “Why, it was nothing, really. The lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right.” The reporter says, “Well, I’ll make sure this

won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, and tomorrow’s paper will have this story on the front page. So, what do you do for a living, and what political affiliation do you have?” The biker replies, “I’m a U.S. Marine, a Republican, and I voted for Trump.” The journalist leaves. The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page: U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT & STEALS HIS LUNCH A tough old cowboy from south Texas counselled his grandson that if he wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gun powder on his oatmeal every morning. The grandson did this religiously to the age of 103 when he died. He left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 25 great-greatgrandchildren, and a 15-foot hole where the crematorium used to be. One Sunday, in counting the money in the weekly offering, the pastor of the Granville Presbyterian church found a pink envelope containing $1,000. It happened again the next week. The following Sunday, he watched as the offering was collected and saw a little old lady put the distinctive pink envelope in the plate. mountain 3100 feet above sea level just a few feet from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Just outside Marion, NC, The Diamondback has more than 190 steep, climbing curves in just 12 miles. The temperature cools as it climbs up steep switchbacks looping almost 360º. The sweeping curves, amazing scenery, and cool mountain breezes make The Diamondback, a quick, fun route to North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Parkway, and Little Switzerland. For more info: https://diamondback226.com/, On Friday July 20th to Sunday July 22nd, the MSTA held their Big Lynn Lodge Ride at the lodge. David “Brick” Brickner has been responsible for the ride since 2011, and every year it gets a little better. “Brick” doesn’t put on the ride all by himself; he has help from many of the MSTA Club members. There are fantastic roads in every direction from the doorstep of the lodge. Doug Pippin has put together a selection of routes, both pavement and dirt that are provided to the participants. They are some of the best roads to be ridden anywhere. Entertainment is scheduled for Friday night. The “Alligators Blues Band”, will play a set or two on the back porch. Three of the four band members are riders who graciously donate their time to entertain everyone. My first encounter with members of the MSTA was last August in Louise’s Famous Rock House Restaurant. There were three members on their way from Georgia to Ohio for the MSTA “Mail Pouch Fly-By” in Marietta, Ohio. They seemed like a fun group so I went on their website to learn more about the club. That’s when I learned about the BLL Ride this year. I wanted to go to visit with them, and write an article. I looked at the weather, and since they were calling for severe storms the rest of the weekend, I decided to take a ride up to Little Switzerland on Friday evening. I would catch the participants as they arrived. I left home about 3:30 heading north on Rte. 226 all the way to Rt 226A when I turned left to go to the Big Lynn Lodge. After a mile or so, I parked in front of the lodge with a few other bikes. After walking around outside taking pictures of the lodge and the other bikes, I walked into the lodge. That’s when I heard someone yell “Hey Wally” and saw “Brick”. I didn’t realize that he was a MSTA member and a “Knobbie”. Chris Jernigan, another Knobbie, was there, too. It was good to see a

couple familiar faces. I placed a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines on a small table in the seating area for all to share. A couple of the club members tried to talk me into participating in the event. In order to participate, I’d have to join the AMA and MSTA, pay the $20 entrance fee, along with find a room for the evening. I had to get home to walk the dog, so I declined. Maybe next year I’ll plan ahead. I know that it would be fun. I went outside to talk with other bikers. They were all very friendly. I asked them if they were concerned that there would be severe storms the rest of the weekend. They weren’t concerned at all because their riding gear is weatherproof, and they know how to ride in the rain. They also would be riding in small groups instead of a large guided group ride done at other rallies. Small groups are safer - rain or shine. One man had a 2018 Harley Softail Sport Glide. It was beautiful. He was

telling about how it handled, and such. As I was standing there, more and more bikers were riding in. “Brick” was expecting about 80 participants in the rally. Participants came from all around. I saw license plates from Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia, along with North and South Carolina. Some of the ones who came from far away, trailered their bikes to the event. I saw a trailer with an Illinois tag. I met another Navy veteran sitting in the shade enjoying the cool breeze. We talked for a while. I learned that he’d been in the Navy over 20 years, and retired in Brevard, NC.. At about 6 pm, I said good-by to my new friends, and rode Rte. 226 all the way home. I was glad that I visited the rally. I got to meet a lot of pleasant people who really enjoy riding their bikes. I’ll look into joining the MSTA club along with the AMA. Maybe next year, I’ll be a participant in the 2019 BLL Ride.

CBA Of Raleigh Community Motorcycle Ride

By: Charlie Boone he morning of July 14 was the beginning of a beautiful motorcycle riding day. We headed to Team Powersports in Garner to start the Concerned Bikers Association (CBA) Of Raleigh Community Motorcycle Ride. By ride time we had 36 people on 34 bikes. We left Team Powersports at 10:30 and headed for The Coffee Chamber in Knightdale so all the coffee drinkers could get their fix. After 30 minutes or so there we went to Main Street Tavern in Rolesville. Already behind our planned time frame, shortly we headed for Garcia Moto in Raleigh. Upon leaving there we took the 5 mile ride to Oak City Speed on Atlantic Ave. We want to thank all of these sponsors for their hospitality for our riders. Also, thanks to Hahn Family Chiropractic for doing the DJ work. The purpose of this ride was not to make money, but to rejuvenate the Raleigh CBA Chapter. We signed up 22 new and expired members that day. This may be the kick that we needed to get our chapter back in action. And we did manage to make a few dollars that day to help fund our chapter Motorcycle Safety Awareness Program (MSAP) program and other activities. James Mangum was the big winner of the day. He won $50 and a service package from Oak City Speed for best hand with

3 nines. He had also bought extra raffle tickets and went away with a new helmet and another prize. Greg Martin went away with $25 for worst hand. Many other great prizes were taken home with raffle prizes donated from all of our generous sponsors. Many thanks also goes to JT Boone for being the motivation for this run and for all of the hard work that he put into making it a success. Additional thanks to the Wake County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department for leading the procession, and to the Rolesville and Wake Forest Police Departments for blocking intersections for us.

16th Annual Christmas In July

By: Wendy Rogers anta Claus is starting early again this year! July 21st and it is already in the works to help support Kids at Duke Children’s Hospital. It all started at Ft. Bragg HD in Fayetteville, NC. The All Veterans Parachute Team jumped in flying an American flag during the National Anthem. A safety briefing was done by Cumberland and Harnett County Sheriff’s Deputies, and a Rider’s Prayer was offered up by the Chaplain of the American Legion Riders Chapter 32 The ride left at 10 am and was escorted all the way from Ft Bragg HD to Durham for this event. They rolled from Cumberland County through Apex and Cary and finally along the Durham Freeway to Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center. The weather was amazing with some overcast and about 85 degrees. There were over 170 bikes and over 45 very colorful Corvettes participating this year. Once they arrived, they parked, donated the toys they brought, and enjoyed a lunch prepared by Texas Roadhouse of Holly Springs and Durham. Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center is nationally ranked among the top children’s hospitals in nine specialties by U.S. News & World Report and provides care for thousands of patients annually. Duke Children’s Hospital is a self-contained “hospital within a hospital” on the fifth floor of Duke University Hospital which provides an attractive, family-friendly, setting for a variety of specialized pediatric services. Heat Stress Injuries While Riding Dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke are very common in intense heat and can put you at increased risk of an accident on a motorcycle. Heat can hurt you, and can even kill you, if you’re out riding and not prepared for the challenges you might encounter. There are a few factors working against bikers when riding in extreme heat. At temperatures exceeding 93 degrees the convection effect intensifies the heat, forcing your body to work overtime by sweating to keep itself cool. But heavy sweating is often less noticeable on a motorcycle because it evaporates more quickly in the rushing air. You can be sweating profusely, dehydrating your body very quickly, and accelerating the effects of heat exhaustion – all without even noticing. To make matters worse, asphalt roads collect and radiate heat making the air above the highway even hotter than ambient temperatures. When you add that to the heat already being generated by your bike, it can become a recipe for heat injury very quickly.

Look out for the following heat stress injuries:

Heat Rash - red raised rash, impairs sweating and decreases effectiveness of sweating.

Heat Exhaustion – moist, clammy skin, dilated pupils, dizziness, confusion, nausea, weak pulse, rapid breathing.

The key to preventing heat injury is preparation. Most often, heat injuries occur when someone is unprepared for the heat and tries to ride through it. Be prepared, take breaks when you need to and, as always, ride safe

An Afternoon Ride In South Carolina By Wally Wersching ast Wednesday, July 18th, was a beautiful summer day. The temps were in the upper 80’s with a bright and sunny blue sky. I decided to take a ride to South Carolina and pick up a cantaloupe for Cindy along the way. I rode “Miss Vickie” west on Rte. 150 through Boiling Springs, and eventually I turned left onto Rte. 221A. Traffic was light at 2 pm. I turned right onto Rte. 11 and rode through Chesnee. After another 5 minutes of or so, I pulled into the Strawberry Hill produce stand. They had a lot of peaches displayed. It is peach season, and the Peach Festival will be next weekend. I walked around looking for the cantaloupe stand but there were none. I asked and the lady said they were out – maybe more next week. That’s when I decided to buy a few ears of corn instead. Three for a dollar was a pretty good price. On my way back to the bike, I saw that a Honda Goldwing trike pulled in while I was looking around. I looked for the riders and found a couple picking out some tomatoes. I introduced myself and gave them a copy of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. They had just moved to South Carolina from upstate New York. I gave them my card and offered them access to my emails. My articles would be great for newcomers to the area. There is so much to do around here.

After saying good-by, I headed back toward Chesnee. On my way to Strawberry Hill, I noticed a couple new cars in the lot with the old trucks and wanted to stop to see them on the way back. When I parked, I noticed a couple new additions to the group. The white 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 2 door hardtop was still there. Next to it was a white 63 ½ Ford Galaxie 500 2 door hardtop. Next to it was a red 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible. It looked like a used car lot from a Ford dealer back in the 60’s. They all seem like they are complete, and it reasonably good condition. Any one of them would be fun to own and drive regularly. There was another car in the lot but on the trailer with no “For Sale” sign or price. It too looked in complete and good condition. It was an early 1970’s Dodge Charger. It was the only non-Ford car on the lot. While I was taking pictures of the cars, I saw another unusual sight. A Russian Ural motorcycle with sidecar rolled in. After the man got off the bike, I walked over to talk with him, and give him a copy of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. I learned that the Ural was a 2017 model. It still looks like the 1930’s BMW it was modeled after but had disc brakes which made it much safer. The history of the Ural is very interesting. The Russians got the BMW plans from Nazi Germany during WWII and have been producing them ever since. They are very sturdy and rugged. The wheel on the sidecar is a drive wheel so they will go almost anywhere. While talking with the Ural owner, I learned that he loved rusty trucks, too. That was why he stopped. I left him examining one of the old trucks. Maybe he’ll buy one and restore it. I rode home and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. I never know who I will meet or what I will see on an afternoon ride. Every time I go, it’s different. I will have to do it again soon.

Jake’s Big Ass Event

By: Caroline aturday, July 21, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson dedicated their Big Ass Event series to their buddy and co-worker, Jake Kernstock. After an unfortunate motorcycle accident, Jake, suffered with injuries to his vertebrate, shoulders, and knees. As you can imagine this will lead to a long and painful, if not expensive, recovery. With another 33 weeks of physical therapy, Jake has a challenging road ahead. The good news is Jake has a supportive motorcycle family and coworkers who went all out to help with medical expenses. The day started with a good number of riders participating in a benefit ride. Meanwhile, folks who came by Smokin’ could enjoy the live music from a great local band, The Invaders. Vendors had lots to offer, from motorcycle parts to jewelry, and told me they had good sales while donating their space rent to Jake. Along with raffles and drawings for prizes, the whole day was quite a success. My personal favorite was folks who donated and in return got the chance to smash a bike. If you needed an outlet for frustrations, that was definitely the event for you and you got to help a great guy! Stop by Smokin’ Harley-Davidson on 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem. Walk back to the parts department and let Jake know you appreciate him and are thinking of him. Encouraging words go a long way to help a person heal. Trail 140 – Too Cool Little Machine Story and photo by Alan Dockery here were lots of cool machines at Cyclemania this year. One of my favorites was this little sorta Honda. I’m familiar with bikes like this since I have Trail 50’s and 70’s. And I keep getting beat in campground drag races by guys on what look like Minitrail 50’s. Well, that motor has been cloned all over the world and now you can buy big, hot rod versions that bolt right into those old frames. Scott Sturgis brought the best example of an updated Trail 70 that I’ve ever seen. His 1972 CT 70/140 is very well done and got lots of attention at Cyclemania. The bike was fresh, built over a few months last Fall. “I found that bike laying on its side in the junkyard at Lesslie Powerports” Scott said. “I gave $40 for it. The bike needed everything. The main frame is about the only original part I used. I had it painted ‘Purple Haze’ and installed custom ‘Trail 140’ decals.” Scott went all in making this Trail 140 the coolest around. He installed CHP upside-down-style hydraulic front end and flipped the axle to the front. Scott wanted all the wheelbase he could get to go with the two inch longer swingarm. He used a front disc brake and larger 12” wheels with fat, low profile Shinko SR-428 tires. Folks buy old dead Minitrails because they can swap in new engines of different sizes and modifications. Scott went with a Piranha YX140. Twice the original engine size of 70cc. A Mikuni VM26 carb, CHP pipe, and UNI air filter get the gases in and out of the hot little motor. All of the chrome and seat and such is new. I like the handlebars since they are original, fold-down style with a little more height. The bike is upgraded to 12 volts with a battery for lighting. H-D billet shifter and H-D kicker add some class. Scott rides his Trail 140. “The YX140 delivers 11 HP to

the rear wheel in stock form,” he said. “With the intake and exhaust, I’m probably somewhere around 14 HP. In a bike that weighs about 150 lbs., and with the sprockets I have, it’s good for about 62-65 MPH. And I’m about 200 pounds dressed out. It’s actually still pulling strong and I feel like it would do more with different sprockets.
