am proud that you are reading the 14th Anniversary Issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Actually, this is the 1st issue of our 15th year serving the motorcycling communities of North and South Carolina. We consider ourselves fortunate to have survived since we have watched many other businesses open and close as the economy went up and down. But I take issue with the POTUS because WE DID BUILD IT! We are still working 12-hour days and going to events on weekends to make it happen every month. But that’s what it takes to be the best. Now I am not just blowing my own horn. We print and distribute more magazines every month than all the other local motorcycle magazines COMBINED! That makes advertising with us a great bargain, too. Do the math. Since 1998 things have changed a bunch. When we printed our first issue in August, we were barely computer literate and the internet service left a lot to be desired. Computers and the Internet have improved exponentially and now you can read the entire magazine, purchase FT merchandise, subscribe, and even pay your bill online. I would only be fooling myself if I tried to convince you that we did this all alone. Our advertisers, readers, and staff play an important part in producing each issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine because without you there would be no money to print it. By: Caroline Since I am a big fan of pyrotechnics, I was glad to go to Laurel Springs for Freeborne’s Independence Day Party. Not only did the lure of fireworks play a role in riding up to Freeborne’s Eatery & Lodge, but record heat also played a role. The first thing I noticed was about a 20-degree drop in temperature. No wonder the place was packed with folks for the weekend, either staying in the Lodge or camping out. I talked to a group from Kinston who told me they come every year for the holidays. As soon as I arrived, the first thing I did was have dinner. The same great food is served here as at Freeborne’s South. Then I made my way to the back where folks were gathered around the open stage to listen and dance to The Thrillbillies. At about 9:30 the main event began and the fireworks started! High on a ridge the beautiful display lasted almost an hour and I can see why folks say it is the biggest in the area. I will definitely be back next year! But you don’t have to wait until then to go by and experience some great riding and good hospitality. Freeborne’s Eatery & Lodge is located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 248, but if you plan to stay the night, call ahead for reservations at 336-359-8008. Ray Price Wild Buffalo Wing Cook-Off

The ladies of Leather & Lace MC provided fellow women riders with their club information and sold merchandise to support breast cancer research. The USO-NC, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Cure Search for Children’s Cancer and Nobles Insurance Agency all set up displays and had fun give-a-ways for everyone. Groovy Dogs provided hot dogs and ice cream, while Hula Dogs provided delicious shaved ice. Spaceship Days played on the stage outside, keeping the crowds entertained with a mix of rock and pop music. The Ladies Only Bike Show was set up, with over a dozen bikes entered. Just before noon, the cook-off judges were announced.

By: Angelica Roman Saturday, July 14th was the perfect day for the annual Ray Price Wild Buffalo Wing Cook-Off. The cooking teams lined up along the street, preparing their grills and sauces. Twelve teams were competing to win over the judges, and the taste buds of the crowd. Rex Blood Services held a blood drive from 9am-1pm, with 47 units donated! Custom Dynamics set up a display of their LED lights and accessories, and promoted the Parade of Lights, an all-new ride for the 2012 Capital City Bikefest, which they are sponsoring. Mutiny Cycle Works was on site displaying some of their custom chopper projects and parts.

Terry Nobles, of Nobles Insurance, Ben Lipetz and a Hooters waitress, of Hooters Raleigh Airport, and Debbie Moose, a former food editor of the News and Observer and a current cookbook author, all took their seats and began eating. For a $5 donation to the Duke Children’s Miracle Network and the All-Star Ride for Life (which benefits the Children’s Miracle Network), attendees were able to enjoy all the wings they could eat from the twelve teams. Ray Price and Kris Weiss, the Director of Marketing, gathered the crowd to announce the winners of the bike show and cook-off. Teresa Stone won first place and a $100 gift card, Deborah Capps won second place and a $50 gift card, and Debbie Davis won third place and a $25 gift card. Spaceship Days provided the drumroll as the winners of the cook-off were announced. Third place and $100 went to The Price is Right, a team new to the Ray Price cook-off events. Second place, and the $250 prize went to the Freedom Biker Church team. First place and the $500 prize went to Grillin’ & Chillin’. The People’s Choice Award, and all the bragging rights, went to The Bomb Squad. This year was a record-setting year. The wings were gone in about an hour, and $3,380 was raised for the charity! Myrtle Beach Bike Weeks

Steve (10th bike week in a row) Rowland This year was a little weird. First we have bike week, then we have extended bike week, via MBHD, that runs into the Atlantic beach bike week then they made different dates. It was crazy. I started out riding around the local hotspots here in the north end. Even before the official date of Bike Week, I saw quite a few bikes riding around. I headed up to Barefoot Landing. They just started getting the tents and stuff up. We headed to my new favorite BBQ joint, The Screamin’ Pig. They had a few bikes out front. They said they just got in town, saw “The Pig” in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and had to try it out. Saturday we all rode out to Barefoot Landing. There was a moderate crowd there, for the first day. We rode up to Beach House Harley-Davidson, in Shallotte. As we were coming up to the dealership on 17, you couldn’t miss it! Rick (the owner) had it looking like a biker carnival out front. They had a live band today, the Snack Crackers and they had the place rocking. The bikers were showing up early this year. Joanie and I went back to BHHD Sunday, and rode the demo fleet of bikes, we rode all day, and we had a blast. The rest of the week I rode everyday, but I stayed mostly on the north end of things. There was a lot of talk about the crowds down south. I decided to hang up here in North Myrtle Beach and patronize my advertisers. We rode to Barefoot Landing about 5 times. They had about 40 or so venders. Some old, some new, but there was some cool stuff to buy. The promoter said that most of the venders did better then last year. Swing Bridge saloon was filled with bikes everyday, many of them were dodging rain all week, On the day of the free pig pickin, the rain was on and off, I didn’t get a chance to attend, but I was told that there were still 350 hungry bikers that showed up. I came down Friday and got lots of pictures. That place was partying like there was no tomorrow. We rode to Dirty Dicks a couple times to get some pictures, The Screamin’ Pig had bikers everyday, The Super 8 motel had a DJ party. Over at the Peppertree Hotel, they were full of motorcycles. North Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson had a parking lot full of bikes everyday. This year I saw more bikes then I can remember. There seamed to be more trikes riding a round and more women bikers, too. During Atlantic Beach bike fest, I saw more nice custom Harleys. There was this one group from Detroit, that had some of the best looking custom bikes. And clean, man that chrome was shining. Saying Happy Birthday To An Old Friend By: Marc O’Grady Chuck Persinger may be gone, but is far from forgotten. On Saturday, 23 June we said Happy Birthday to an old friend. This would have been Chuck’s 50th birthday. 24 bikes, 4 cars, and a bunch of Border Collies showed up to celebrate his life. Chuck was a son, dad, husband, brother, and dear friend. Riding was a big part of who he was. He didn’t care what the weather was he was on 2 wheels. Chuck was a Christian and had strong convictions. His children, Lindsey, Rachel, and Brandon were there as well as his wife, Debbie, his father, Gene, with wife Sara, his brother Darin and his faithful dog (Border Collie Rescue) Jack. Seven Sabres MC members were on hand to lead us through some beautiful country on the ride. We started out at Ray Price H-D were Chuck was a very active member of the HOG Chapter, then went to see John and Jeff over at D&Q Cycles in Angier. Chuck used to get his bike fixed there and they are some great guys. Next we went to say Happy Birthday at Buie’s Creek Cemetery where Chuck was laid to rest. As soon as we got there Jack went up and sniffed where Chuck’s stone was. Words were said and tears were shed, but the memories will last forever.

The day was capped off with lunch at Golden Corral in Fuquay-Varina. $1000 dollars was collected and donated to the Carolina Border Collie Rescue. What a great way to remember a friend. Special thanks go out to Seven Sabres MC, Ray Price Harley-Davidson, Carolina Border Collie Rescue, and Raleigh HOG for making the day special for a family.

Iron Chariot Ride Benefiting Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge

By: Debbie Harmon Thirty-four bikes lined the parking lot of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge (GPTC) at 1912 Boulevard Street in Greensboro, NC. Teen Challenge is a local center and part of an International program helping young people who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. They are the faith-based solution to the drug epidemic. The ride, organized by Noah’s Tribe member, Mike Williams Sr., who is also an Advisory Board member for GPTC, was the first annual event and was held to raise money to put a new roof on dormitory one of the program. Dr. Bob Harman, Executive Director of GPTC, and an avid biker, was thrilled to see the support of the community to help get this project launched. Riders started out with a pancake breakfast prepared by the staff and students at Teen Challenge, with coffee donated by Starbucks. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Department escorted the ride. After a brief rest stop half way through the ride, it ended in Archdale at the First Baptist Church’s pavilion where the riders enjoyed a lunch donated by Jam’s Deli and Chickfil-A. Dr. Harman says the ride raised just under $3500, which will be applied to the expense of the new roof for the dormitory. Teen Challenge in Greensboro is a program for men ages 18-45 and operates totally on donations from the local community, churches, and donors. The men are only charged $700 entrance fee to enter the seven month long program. Pender Correctional Institution’s 6th Annual Charity Motorcycle Ride By: Judy Bortz This ride was held July 14th with help from Pender and New Hanover County Sherriff’s Departments, and Britt Motor Sports. It is a definite “do not miss” event, so pencil it in for next year if you didn’t make it! The ride was held to raise funds for North Carolina Special Olympics. This being an Olympic year, it is especially important to remember and support these special athletes. Each county in NC holds games, and then sends athletes to Raleigh for competitions in June, and again in October for fall games. This ride was organized by Officers Steele and Simpson, and Miss Pate who did a great job! It was a 100-mile run from Britt Motor Sports in Wilmington to Top Sail Beach. Sign up started at 9, and KSU was at 10, which is a perfect start time to beat the heat on a summer day! It was a beautiful day for a ride, unfortunately when I went to start up my Softail, she had a flat, and so with no time to take care of it I was forced to drive my cage! Thanks to Wahoo for letting ride along on the back of his trike, it was kind of nice being able to take in the sights! There were about 60 bikes, and 80 people who came out, including a legion riders group from Maryland! The ride itself was flawless. Scott Britt led the ride on the beautiful Luke’s Wings Trike with its military insignia and flag flying strong! The Sherriff’s kept us moving straight through, we didn’t stop for 1 red light, no cage tried to split up the group, cars on the road pulled over and left us ride on, and on market street, that is something! After a stop to take some pictures of the group on the beach and have some water, we headed back to Britt’s for lunch and raffles. There were 3 pretty girls in bikinis to wash the salt off your bike. They did a good job and the guys who got a wash were happy with the work, and the eye candy! Lunch was two BBQ chicken quarters, with green beans, potato salad, homemade biscuits, and your choice of ice cold drinks. It was all very delicious and there was so much that many ended up taking some home! The 505/50 ended up being $65, which the winner donated back to the cause! Tickets for the raffle prizes were drawn, and everyone had a wonderful time! We ended up raising around $2100 for Special Olympics on this ride. To date Pender Correctional has raised $17,000 for this worthy cause, but needs your help to hit their goal of $25,000. There are some other great events scheduled to help meet this goal, “over the edge”, where you can repel from a 32 story building in Raleigh, and a golf tournament scheduled for July 29th at Rock Creek Country Club. You Will Come Home! We Will Not Leave You Behind!

By: Monica Vetula Cash, President, Rolling Thunder®, NC 7 These are the words spoken by Bob Bergdahl, father of captured American POW Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl at Rolling Thunder® XXV. The Taliban supporting Afghanistan Haqqani network has held Sgt. Bergdahl captive since June 30, 2009. Bowe Bergdahl of Hailey, Idaho is America’s only known living Prisoner Of War in Afghanistan! At first his parents, Bob and Jani, chose not to speak out publicly for fear harm would come to their son – but now, frustrated by the fact that their son is not home, they have given a number of interviews in hopes that the government will reopen negotiations for their son’s release. The Bergdahl Family does believe that the government is actively working with the government of Afghanistan, but the current political situation there is perilous as there are many factions opposed to each other, including different factions of the Taliban. This May, Bob and Jani Bergdahl accepted the invitation of Rolling Thunder® National, Inc to be the Grand Marshalls in the Rolling Thunder® XXV Demonstration Ride held on May 27, 2012 to help raise awareness to their son’s plight. Rolling Thunder NC 7 was honored to be their escorts for the weekend. They arrived in DC and on Friday, May 25th were taken to the White House for a tour with RT National Officers. Later that evening they attended the Candlelight Ceremony at the Vietnam Wall. Saturday morning many chapters of Rolling Thunder® went to visit the TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) with their motorcycles and small gifts, letting the children sit on the bikes, rev the engines, and take photos, and forget for a few minutes that they are there because one of their parents has made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. There are so many wonderful ceremonies and activities going on in DC the entire weekend and motorcycles everywhere! Jani, Bob, and Bowe are avid bikers - more of the all terrain style, but all accomplished riders. Bob and Jani joined us on a V-Rod for the day and they were able to experience Memorial Weekend like any other biker family, from Washington Harley-Davidson to American Legion Riders Post 177 in Fairfax and just some fun riding. It is hard to decide what you are going to do on Saturday, as there are many ceremonies and events and Thunder Alley across Constitution from the Vietnam Memorial to visit with just about any pin, patch, hat, or tee shirt you might be looking for. That evening after all the chapters of Rolling Thunder® had attended all the mandatory security, parking, and sales meetings necessary to make the Sunday Demonstration Ride a success, we were audience to a speech by Bob Bergdahl about what is has meant to his family to have the backing of Rolling Thunder® and how they appreciate all that has been and is being done to help secure their son’s release. He pointed to the lone figure on the National POW flag and said, “That is my son! That is Bowe!”

Sunday morning, RT chapters are up and out the door, most by 4:30am, in the parking lot by 5 to begin their duties. NC 7 once again had parking detail in the Pentagon North parking lot. Bikes were already lined up in the road waiting to come in. The North lot usually fills up by 9-9:30 am, and then the South lot opens, and when it is full, the next lot opens. This bunch of bikes will not leave the Pentagon parking lot until after 3pm as over 100,000 bikes participate in the Demonstration Ride along with an estimated four to five hundred thousand bikes in the city. Jani and Bob Bergdahl rode in the POW Bucket Car owned and operated by RTNC 7’s Wayne Daniels of Franklinton, NC. Sunday morning Bob and Jani stood by the POW car in the lineup in the Pentagon parking lot while hundreds of people stopped by to speak to them and let them know they support and pray for Bowe’s safe return. Bowe could not have more supportive and committed parents. They graciously took time to speak to each and every person who approached them. The Demonstration Ride was a success, as it has been for twenty-five years now. Thousands of people lined the streets in support, waving flags, saluting, and cheering us on. It ended at the Rolling Thunder® stage next to the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial, where the annual program began with ceremonies, speakers, and musical performances. Again, Bob Bergdahl took to the podium to speak of his son, POW Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl and how he would love to be at an event such as Rolling Thunder® riding his motorcycle. He promised his son that he will not give up and that Bowe will not be forgotten! In one of the videos released by the Taliban of Bowe he states: “Every day I want to go home. The pain in my heart to see my family again doesn’t get any smaller.” Would you get involved if he were your family? America needs to join the Bergdahl’s in the quest to have their son returned home! Bikers For Bikers Foundation Goes To Texas

By: Jeanie Hood-Carter At the end of April BFBF got an application for assistance from a downed biker in Houston, TX. James had gone down in March and needed help. Even though he had a broken ankle, road rash, and basically a shattered/ crushed wrist, since he no medical insurance, James was sent home with a splint and told that when he got the money for surgery they would repair his wrist! We were shocked! So, he had lost the use of his hand and had no way to work or make the badly needed funds to get back on his feet or have the needed surgery. After a thorough investigation, the foundation found there was no alcohol involved and James was not at fault, but the doctors wouldn’t bill the vehicle’s insurance company because they had no idea when or if there would be a settlement. James hired an attorney but that takes time, too. With so many applicants, and limited funds, the foundation decided to go to Texas and do a benefit ASAP. Mickey and I began calling and emailing and scheduled a benefit for June 23 at Yankee’s Tavern and Grill, a well-known biker bar/grill that is a destination for many weekend riders with an outdoor stage, and covered area for a benefit not too far out of Houston. Tammy, the owner, agreed to having the benefit there and even though we didn’t have long to get things together or the time to get the word out there, the show was on. Mickey saved the money up for the trip, as that comes out of our pockets, and I desperately searched for a band and a Christian MC that would help. After going through about 6 bands, someone told me to contact Outlaw Lynn and the Who’s Drivin¿ Band (www.WhosDrivinOnLine.com/), known for helping with biker benefits when someone went down or was terminally ill. Immediately Outlaw Lynn, his beautiful wife, Lisa, and the Who’s Drivin¿ Band jumped on board to help. Even though they knew the weather was going to be extremely hot and that they had a gig 2-3 hours away that night, they offered to play for free to help the downed biker. Two days before the event, we met with James and with our BFBF Texas State Captain, whose wife is extremely ill. A friend of James paid the surgeon to operate, but James still had to pay for all the other bills and rehab on top of daily living expenses while he was unable to work. From there we went to a well-known independent shop to meet Hungry (Dave Love), who owns Hungry’s Hawg Pen in Magnolia. Hungry is known for having hard to find parts for old style bikes and is so reputable that other shops have his sign hanging in them! He

was a pleasure to meet in the flesh instead of on the Internet or phone and when he heard why we were in Texas, he donated half of the items for the raffle at the benefit. This was huge! He was amazing and he collects pigs, thus the name Hungry’s Hawg Pen. Those pigs are everywhere and the shop has a Texas Twang to it. The morning of June 23 was blistering hot. At 10am we were still setting up as bikers began pulling in. Ralph trailered his bike from Florida to Baytown then rode with friends and Jack Smith, Ride Captain for the NE Houston Chapter of the CMA. Then CMA members from Bryan, Huntsville, and Conroe pulled in. This was great since they were having their national rally the same week. Next a group called the Iron Wolves MC, Alternatives MC, and the Tradesman MC pulled in. Throughout the day small groups from other clubs pulled in as well as Hungry and Bill Allen from Big Hairy Bikers with about 300 attending throughout the day and coming as far as San Antonio, about 3.5 hours riding hard. With the short notice, we didn’t do food and didn’t want to interfere with Yankee’s business. We relied on the raffle, donations, a 50/50, and took a percentage of everything sold for BFBF and donated it. We used our gas money to make the change, and a local member, TX BABY Girl-Anita, who graciously volunteered when we had to leave the table. It was 103 degrees and I drank 8 big glasses of iced tea. Outlaw Lynn almost passed out, Lisa’s face was beet red as she was working hard, and a number of us were putting towels and washcloths in ice then on our heads and necks to keep from having heat strokes. It was HOT, but we kept it going and even danced. The band rocked with the mix of music known as their “Red Dirt Texas Style”. Texas bikers and cowboys love this style of music and they put on a great show while pushing for donations. At the end, we took out our gas change, donated a percentage off the tees and dumped all the donations, and monies made from the benefit into a large Cheetos jar and passed it to James. He was so overwhelmed and announced that when he went down his family had not even offered to help him. We told him, “We are your family.” He was more appreciative for the little help than one can imagine. As the benefit was winding down, and the band time was up, John Kocian, a DJ from Houston geared up and played for a while. Tammy came out and donated her entire day’s tips,

which was over $100, to James, the President from the Tradesman MC had given him another $100, and the 2 cowboys who joined us for the music donated another $100. We have no idea how much was donated to James, but everything helps and it was the first time anyone, other than the friend who paid the surgeon, had helped him. Thank you to all the clubs who showed support and treated BFBF so well, Yankee’s for allowing us to do the benefit there, and Tammy for donating her tips, Hungry’s Hawg Pen for being so generous and for showing up, Bill Allen-Big Hairy Bikers for making an appearance and supporting, DJ John Kocian, Polaris-Victory in Bryan, and especially to Outlaw Lynn and Who’s Drivin¿ Band and Lisa Rock for being so generous and rockin’ our socks off! And, to all those wonderful Texans who welcomed us with open arms, big smiles, and Texas style hospitality you feel from everyone, thank you for being supportive on short notice in such hot weather. Slingin’ Dirt At Boozy Creek

Story and photo by Alan Dockery This has been a summer for heading to the hills when ya can. So for the 4th of July Weekend I crossed the mountains into East Tennessee where the Peacemakers MC holds their Boozy Creek Field Meet and Dirt Drags. Saturday bikers ride in and set up camp in the wooded grounds along Boozy Creek. Several vendors were there with everything from t-shirts to a couple guys sharpening knives. This ain’t a big, fancy motorhome and golf cart party, but by night several hundred bikers were relaxin’ with friends Saturday afternoon was hot, almost too hot to drink beer. So Fox waited until the shade reached the game field for some people games. At Boozy Creek most things involve racing. The games also involve drinking lots of FREE BEER. The first thing Fox did was ice down a keg. Games included Girls Bouncing On Big Balls, Sledgehammer Spin Race And Ski Race. They all began with chugging a cold beer, a pit stop that required chugging a beer and another beer at the turn around. Then several guys put their bikes on the burn out trailer and smoked the creek. I didn’t get his name, but a guy from Lincoln County, NC, put a Shovelhead up there and smoked it ‘til the tire popped. Yeah, he won a new tire. Friday and Saturday night’s bands rock Boozy Creek. During a band break it was time for a fireworks show that brought even more folks out from under the trees. Sunday the party moves to the field and more people ride in for the day. Soon the drag races and bike games kick up some dust. First it was a round of the race bikes taking to the track for a test and tune session. Then some sweet rides cruised onto the field for the bike show. Rory Isod, Lexington, NC, won the Twin Cam class. The field events are even done as races. The Panty Race had the passenger running down the track, grabbing panties,

Rory Isod, Lexington, NC, won the Big Twin Street Tire class putting them on, jumpin’ on the bike and then the rider poppin’ the clutch for a sod flingin’ dash to the finish line. The Wiener Bite Race had two teams of competitors at a time race to the wiener, slide to a stop, the passenger take a bite and then it was a race to the finish. And the Water Bucket on the Board just had folks getting wet. Billy and Donna from Hickory, NC, represented the Carolinas. All kinds of racers, from kids on dirt bikes to Harleys, get into the dirt drags. Most of the race bikes are old foreign machines that were bought and built cheap. The fans loved the show no matter how big the bike or the rider. Rory showed his bike didn’t just look good, but he could get it down the track too winning the Big Twin Street Tire class. The Peacemakers MC hosts a cool, old fashioned bike run at their beautiful, peaceful place in the Tennessee hills. Bring your race bike, field event partner, a good attitude, and y’all come join us.

By: Dale (Caveman) Carroll, State Information Director CBA/Abate of NC, President, Gaston County Chapter CBA/Abate of NC Since 2008, The Gaston County Chapter of The Concerned Bikers Association in North Carolina has had some sort of Helmet Law Protest Ride. We started on New Year’s Day 2008 with 13 riders. 2011 saw 77 riders display the intention of celebrating the 4th of July with a rousing spectacle of individual freedom. After a short ride, this celebration was interrupted by The LEO’s, who kept us from exercising our freedoms for over 2 hours while they discussed The Gaston County’s legal systems lack of prosecution for non-DOT helmets. No tickets issued, we went our way, and they went the other. Fast forward to July 4th, 2012. The Thin Blue Line was not so thin in The Rose’s parking lot in Belmont North Carolina. Twenty (20) plus LEO’s from the Belmont PD, Gaston County PD, The Gaston County Sheriff’s office and The North Carolina State Patrol complete with a paddy wagon and a pop-up tent fresh ink pens and freshly oiled handcuffs at the ready! There were just under one hundred (100) motorcycles and approximately 160 riders and passengers that took time from their holiday to stand up for their personal liberty on a day, that 236 years ago another group of patriots told King George,” Not just no, but HELL NO!” Now. I’d like to tell you this story has a happy ending, but I can’t. Not yet! We stood our ground but so did the LEO’s. Twenty +/- brave souls, rolled out of that parking lot without helmets, but they only made it about 20 feet. The rest of the group, most wearing non-DOT helmets, were waved through. The LEO’s were being very selective in their enforcement of North Carolina law. August 27th is my court date. It seems the LEO’s had a plan by having so many different jurisdictions represented the court dates and locations are spread out through the county so as not to overload the court system. Hopefully we’ll have all 20+ appearing to plead “Not Guilty” and requesting a jury trial. We’ve been attempting to get this law changed in the legislative arena for almost 40 years. The legislation has been blocked by the very system that is supposed to represent us! It’s time to raise the anty. Please Don’t Judge Me And I’ll Not Judge You! By: Gina Gossenreiter, Coordinator for the 2012 SC State H.O.G. Rally Anyone who knows me knows I have literally been riding all my life. Before I rode my own I rode on the back of my Mom’s or Dad’s bike, and before that I rode on their tanks. My Dad always said my first ride I was still in Mom’s tummy. I seriously don’t ever remember not riding. My Mom was just like any other Mom. She baked cookies, took us on family trips and helped with our homework. The only difference was she rode a motorcycle and my Dad owned a bike shop. Most of the kids at school were not allowed to come to my house and hangout because my mother rode a motorcycle. I never really understood the stigma until I was almost 38 years old. I was out on my “new to me” 1992 Peach and Cream Heritage. I named her “Faith” because I had faith in her to get me there and back and “faith” in myself to handle her when she got spunky. She was a beautiful scoot. I was so proud and my adrenalin was pumping. It was early March and the day was too cold for anyone except new bike owners, newbie riders, and 1%ers. I pulled into a gas station near a quaint little town in the area where I lived and pumped my gas (much cheaper back then). I was shaking from the cold and spilled some on my tank. Leather clad and helmet head, I went in to pay. I also asked for a paper towel to clean up my spill. The “kind lady behind the register” said, “We don’t have any.” I looked over and there was a shelf full of them! I then asked where the ladies room was, thinking I would use some TP to wipe the spillage. She said, “We don’t have one.” I told her thank you for the gas, and left. The closer I got to home the more I thought about my Mom, and the way she was treated because SHE RODE A MOTORCYCLE! By the time I arrived back home at the farm, I was livid! I was bound to do my part to repair society’s outlook on us “Bikers.” The following morning I took the kids to school and put my plan into action. I dressed in my most girlie skirt and matching shirt, cute little shoes, jewelry and matching pocketbook. I then set off to buy gas for my MINIVAN! I arrived at the gas station, pumped my gas and went in to pay. Guess who was behind the register? You got it there she stood, the same “kind lady behind the register”!!! I repeated my requests from the day before – asking for a paper towel and the ladies room. “Sure, here you go Honey, and the ladies room is right back there.” she said. To which I replied, “Wow, you must have run out to buy

some paper towels yesterday. And how did you get someone to build a bathroom over night?” The “kind lady behind the register” looked at me oddly and said, “No Honey, I just grabbed a pack from the shelf and the bathroom has always been right over there.” “Hummmmm…. you don’t recognize me do you?” Before she had a chance to answer I continued… “I was in yesterday on my motorcycle and asked for paper towels and the ladies room, and you told me you didn’t have either one.” As her mouth fell wide open, I told her I was the “Biker” that pulled in to spend my good, hard-earned money with her establishment, and she had treated me in a way I would never have expected. I also told her I would never spend another dime of my money in her store again as long as I lived. I left feeling I had in some small way vindicated my Mom and her choice to ride. I want to thank my Mom and the other women who rode before it was the “cool” thing to do. Thank you, Mom, for paving the road before me, and for taking all the crap from those who have no idea what it feels like to jump on a scoot and take off. Every time I am on my bike I am about 10 miles to a place I call “Away From It All.” No, I am not a 1%er. I might look like I am at times, and I absolutely feel like a biker when I am on mine. I do have good friends that are, and I love them dearly. Me, I’m a working, professional, Italian mom of seven grown kids, and a woman that loves to ride. Riding lets the wind wash away the dust from my mind and soul after a long week at the office negotiating contracts … just like a round of golf, or a game of tennis does for others. So please don’t judge me. After all, I don’t judge you for chasing a little white ball around a glorified cow pasture with a stick while trying to whack it into a man-made gopher hole. By: Whistle Hill I was in line at the fairgrounds in Wilson, NC by 10 am Tuesday, July 10th. Toy hauler, golf cart, and two days to sit in a field with a whole bunch of fellow bikers from all over, and I mean ALL over, the east coast, from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Minnesota, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and yes, even West, by God, Virginia. We had a large time even when they threw a $10 per day fee on every one of us to sit in a field waiting for the gates to open. There was a lot of griping about the newly increased prices. On the other hand, what is a 3-day get together with friends you haven’t seen since last year? The answer is PRICELESS. I also got a bartending lesson and you gotta try it. Mix a 1 oz shot of Crown and a 1 oz shot of pickle juice. Talk about a drink with some zing. We need a name for that one! Thursday morning when the gates opened, all 500 - 600 campers battled for their favorite spot. I know for sure there is only one high spot that will not get wet, and me and my crew are on that ground quick. A few hours of setting up and were ready for EasyRiders Rodeo 2012. Thanks to Mother Nature we had plenty of rain, so it was no dust bowl this year. Although the guy who turned his Jon boat into a ride was definitely in business. All we had to do was hose the mud off of the truck that they charged me $25 to take in. Friday was wide open with Heist, Soulicit, and Cowboy providing the music. There were wet t-shirt contests, and people still rolling in from as far away as Arizona. Friday night was polished off with shrimp fresh from Morehead that morning. Thanks to Wesley Brazelton for the grub. The activity died down around 1 am. Saturday started early with the bike show, and sled pulls, keg roll, slow race, bar stool races, and other bike games carried on into the early evening. It was hot and humid and most of the attendees stayed in the shade and tried to stay cool, but the games went on anyway. That evening Soulicit, The Lacs, and Mustang Sally performed. Mustang Sally had to be one of the highlights of the weekend. The band was kicking and I think the whole campground was there to see, and of course there was the wet t-shirt

By: dpapabear The Rock Bottom Saloon in Salisbury held a 2-day party over the 4th of July. They are the only Bike Fest Style Bar in the Salisbury area with over 18 acres for camping and partying. Currently they only have primitive style (no hookups) sites but they are working to upgrade part of the campsites to have RV hookups for future events. They do have a shower house and bonfire pit as well as outdoor stage area for the bands. They are also remodeling the bar as well. They are also holding a raffle for 2 different bikes, a ’79 Shovelhead and a ’97 Heritage Softail. Only 500 tickets will be sold on each bike and the drawing will be October 6th. The 2-day party started on the 3rd and extended thru the night of the 4th. The weather was hot as heck so most of the partygoers stayed in the cool during the day and started showing up later in the evening. The crowd was not quite as I expected, but with the hot weather and people on vacation, still a good turnout and everyone sure seemed to be enjoying themselves. The band “21st Century Goliath” provided the music both days for the event although the Wednesday daytime band schedule was altered because of the extreme heat. Honor And Remember Flag Presentation By: Judy Bortz This event was held at DAV in Wilmington, NC on June 23, and was a very emotional day. Five flags were presented to NC families including one to the oldest Vietnam Veteran mother on the eastern seaboard, for her son SSgt Charles Ruffin. He was in a tank that ran over an anti-tank mine in South Vietnam in 1970. She waited so many years for some long overdue recognition of the sacrifice Charles made for all of us. It was a very poignant moment in the ceremony when Scott Britt presented her family with their flag that was sponsored by Britt Motorsports. Fifteen riders from Rolling Thunder Chapters III & V, and Patriot Guard from Fayetteville escorted all five of the families from their homes in Jacksonville, Sneed’s Ferry and Wilmington to the ceremony. Many families that loose a loved one on active duty for our country yearn to know that the service man or woman that they loved did not die in vain, and will be remembered. The Honor and Remember flag was designed towards that goal in 2005. They serve as a poignant and a proud symbol of respect for freedom earned through sacrifice. This flag is intended to be flown under the Red, White, And Blue, and above the POW MIA flag. It is a beautiful yet simple design, steeped in meaning. The red field represents the blood spilled for our freedom, the white field below the gold star recognizes the purity of the sacrifice made, the blue star represents active service in military conflict, the gold star reflects the value of the life that was sacrificed, the flame is an eternal reminder of the spirit of the fallen hero that burns forever in the memories of all that knew him or her. The embroidered flags are not cheap, but in NC there is a group that will purchase the flag for a fallen veteran’s family at no cost to them. The family need only send them a request. Honda Of Winston-Salem Ladies Night Luau By: Caroline I attended Honda of Winston-Salem’s Ladies Night Luau on June 21, and had a blast. This has become a regular even at Honda of Winston-Salem, where they open the store for their female clientele. Honda is very savvy when it comes to providing services for the ladies. No matter what you ride, Honda of Winston-Salem has something for everyone; whether it is their popular Cam-Am series, touring, sport bikes, ATVs or personal watercraft and all the accessories to go with them. Lucas Cole Nixon Foundation Benefit Rally

“So, don’t cry for me I’m no longer alone sitting on this beautiful mountain, I’m sitting here with my Father. So go enjoy the day until we meet again. Just remember, “I love you all”. Lucas (http://lucascolenixon.org) The driving rain nor howling winds could not keep away fellow bikers who came to show support for the Lucas Cole Nixon Foundation Rally at Rockingham Dragway on June 1 and 2. The purpose was to celebrate the life of a young man who committed suicide as a result of a school system that allows bullying to come not only from the students, but also from the teachers. The first band on Friday, Walla, took the stage on time and brought out old favorite rock with a splash of their original tunes which reminded me of the Avett Brothers. The lead singer for the band, Matt, was a friend of Lucas till the end. “When my mother came in the door and said Lucas had killed himself, mortality became real” Matt shared with the bikers gathered in the misting rain. The community gathered didn’t seem to mind the off and on again rain as the bands played on and we shared truth with one another. Everyone seemed to have a moment in time where they were bullied or were in fact the bully themselves. The rain came harder and the camaraderie became stronger. Raven, the event organizer, was so overwhelmed by the emotions of the event that she had a friend of hers read the speech she had prepared for the opening of the rally. Raven’s son was a victim of bullying in the same school system as Lucas. She challenged the people of Richmond County to get off their asses and make some REAL changes to the system by starting at the center of the problem – the superintendent of schools. If the leader of the broken school system doesn’t see that it needs to be fixed, then she asked him to step down and allow a leader to come forth who will take off their blinders and see the needs of the students that are suffering under oppression. Every point was cheered by all those standing in witness of the truth of the power and powerlessness of bullying. The Monika James Band took the stage and rocked the ROCK as the rain and wind began to bear down on us. Standing, soaked, with the wind blowing our hair straight, we stood together until it was too dangerous for the band to play on. The Artimus Pyle Band never took the stage as the rain set in and basically flooded out the rest of Friday night. Although we wanted to keep the spirit we had found there going, Mother Nature said good night and we had to wish for better weather on Saturday. Saturday opened up with beautiful weather and the thunder came rolling to the Rock about midday. Mother Nature gave us an open door to party on and celebrate life. And we did. Music flooded the rally grounds while bikers danced, drank, and engaged each other in conversations about life, God, and the future of our youth. The Artimus Pyle Band had left Saturday morning to prepare for another gig, but Artimus stayed. In his words to his fellow bikers Artimus related some stories from his life of rock-n-roll and his service for our country as well as his own personal

battle with bullies over his lifespan. Then it happened… Those of us who had braved the elements over the last 36 hours were treated to the jam session of a lifetime! Artimus played drums with a “pick-up” band that seemed to change members after each song. The sounds were damn good because they were not formulated but came from the hearts and souls of all who took the stage. Everyone was valuable and each had his or her talent that they brought to the music. No one was better than the next or less, either. It was a show of community. A community, who wanted to come together and shut down an epidemic of bullying that has overcome our country, had been created and was alive. The rally closed with the crazy ass stage presence of Geneva and her band rocking the Rock till 2AM. All of us crowded the stage and danced in triumph. We withstood the unpredictable weather together and at that moment in time we danced together as comrades before going into battle – the battle for the future of our youth. Great time of freedom and the pursuit of it! Kudos, Raven and the gang. You stood and drew your line in the sand. Thank 1335 National Hwy. Smoke Out Lucky 13

Story and photo by Alan Dockery The last weekend of June seems to always have several major events scheduled. A couple of them are tempting, but for me The Horse Back Street Choppers Smoke Out 13 was my destination. The Smoke Out has built a reputation as one of the best biker parties on the East Coast And it’s held at North Carolina’s Rockingham Dragway, an excellent place for a bike rally. There are lots of reasons why so many bikers love the Smoke Out from cool people, the coolest bikes, lots of vendors, and great bands to thundering down the drag strip just for fun. The party starts Friday afternoon with plenty to see and do for the folks who have camp already set up. Rockingham has lots of camping area and they put the trailers and motorhomes (think generators) on one side of the dragstrip and tent campers on the other. Both campgrounds rock all weekend. Friday afternoon is a good time to slowly cruise the vendors before the crowd gets big and the Smoke Out in high gear. Even the music on stage was mellow, solo, acoustic guys. By mid-afternoon the tempo and volume increase with chainsaw art carving then the All American Stunter’s Stunt Show. That dude did stunts on a Sportster, too, not a little crotch rocket. After the stunt show, the party got real loud as it moved to the drag strip. First, four All Harley Drag Racing Association Pro Dragsters rattled the stands. These are nitromethane-fueled machines that run the quarter mile in seven seconds at more than 170 miles per hour. A couple Carolina Boys were riding them, too. World famous builder and tuner Johnny Vickers and Jay Beasley on the Bobby Hoover machine ran a match race. Then the dragstrip was open to anyone and we saw everything from street race bikes to ratty old Japanese choppers make passes. About every 30 minutes Edge, Smoke Out Coordinator, escorted a new lady to the starting line. Yeah, the Smoke Out is old school and they had pretty ladies flagging the bikes off the line. They let a few ladies start the bikes since it was hot and they didn’t want the body paint to melt or the chest to sunburn. Later afternoon Hammer, Englishman, and Edge brought the crowd to the stage for the official welcome to the Smoke Out Lucky 13 and gave away some t-shirts, too. One band I look forward to, Rebel Son, took the stage and got a crowd down front for the Wet T-shirt Contest with Roadside Marty. I commend Marty on running a great Wet T-shirt Contest. Then Rebel Son played for a couple more hours as we sang along to their rowdy honky tonk tunes. Sometime that afternoon we

had a brief rain shower that cooled things off nicely. Friday night the party moves to the campground for a few more hours after the main gate closes. The band Control Freak cranked out current rock tunes while folks smoked it out in the burn out pit. Saturday the Smoke Out crowd really swells. You better get a schedule because there is so much going on it’s easy to miss something. Early in the afternoon there was a Painted Ladies contest. The Horse staff provided the paints and brushes, and we judged folks’ “artwork.” The main stage was often a busy place and the staff was often giving away some cool prizes, too. With all the action on the drag strip, in the vendor area, and on stage, you really should make time to slowly walk the bike show area. The Smoke Out has my favorite bike show of the year. These ain’t your usual store-bought customs or bikes with some paint and bolt-on chrome doodads. Bikes in the Smoke Out show are unique rides that always have me wondering, “How did they do that? and “What’s that made out of?” You have to make a few passes down the show line to catch it all. And the parking area has lots of cool rides too that will give you ideas for your next real custom. Near the bike show was a gas tank making demo. The Artimus Pyle Band, a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, took the stage mid-afternoon to start us dancing and singing along to songs we all knew. A rain shower cancelled the Saturday afternoon drag racing and sent folks back to the camp to cool off for a while. Soon as the rain stopped, it was time for the XS Speed Mini-Bike Races. This is always a popular Smoke Out event with lots of folks entering cool little mini-bikes and dressing up in Super Hero costumes, too. I even represented The Carolinas’ Full Throttle and entered the mini-bike race as a WalMartian. Beaner won the main feature race after several heat races. Saturday is packed with things to do and see at the Smoke Out with more stunt shows, vendor demos, and the Horse Staff on stage. Bike show winners and Stampede and Long Road riders were honored during the afternoon. As the sun went down we were treated to Sami Te Fire Show and another great wet t-shirt contest. Highway to Hell, an AC/DC tribute band, closed out the Smoke Out rocking the stage for a couple hours. After the official events the party moved to the campgrounds with the band Control Freak on the campground stage. Some ladies took turns in a pole dancing contest while the rest of

www.FullThrottleMagazine.com us cheered them on and did burnouts. It is the Smoke Out and lots of folks hit the burn out pit to smoke us out. Sometime in the early morning hours I was tired and headed back to the camp. Smoke Out Lucky 13 finally wore out this old guy. “The Smoke Out is about choppers,” said Edge the event organizer. “It is about builders, from professional builders to those bloodyknuckled guys and ladies burning the midnight oil in an unheated shed to build a chopper they can call their own. Chops of all makes are featured, American, British, Japanese, everything. The event is about riders, cross-town to cross-country in a rainstorm.” I love the Smoke Out partly because of the attitude Edge mentioned. It’s so cool to attend an event with all kinds of people and bikes. There were folks from Florida to Maine to the West Coast. Old guys were partying with young folks. Bikes of all kinds and all states of build from old stockers to true home-built customs were there. I met young guys who reminded me of how I, and many of y’all, got into motorcycling. They were riding whatever they could afford and customizing with whatever they could find. If you are tired of the same old bike rallies, go Old School and be Cool at the Smoke Out next year. The first went in to see the counselor, who told him to take math, history, and logic. “What’s logic?” the first biker asked. The professor answered, “Let me give you an example. Do you own a weed eater?” “I sure do.” “Then I can assume, using logic, that you have a yard,” replied the professor. “That’s real good!” said the biker. The professor continued, “Logic will also tell me that since you have a yard, you also own a house.” Impressed, the biker said, “Amazing!” “And since you own a house, logic dictates that you have a wife.” “That’s Betty Mae! This is incredible!” The biker was catching on. “Finally, since you have a wife, logically I can assume that you are heterosexual,” said the professor. “You’re absolutely right! Ray Price Vintage Bike Goes To National Motorcycle Museum Exhibit

By: Natalie Eroh National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa, is introducing a local legend this month. Ray Price’s Harley Davidson™ “funny bike” is the focus of Quarter Milestones, a yearlong exhibit showcasing the early years of motorcycle drag racing. The exhibition comes on the heels of the 2nd Annual Vintage Rally where Ray Price shared his expertise and contributed to panel discussions. “Motorcycle Drag Racing is a sport that was born and bred in America,” said Ray Price of Ray Price, Inc. “We are thrilled to be a part of this special exhibition that tells an entire story with racing memorabilia. Through the years, tuners and designers have brought their ideas to the starting line. This exhibit honors these champions and the many technological advancements of the sport.” With minimal sponsorship support in the 1960s and 1970s, a racer’s bike was often cannibalized for parts in order to build the next machine. The old bike, with missing parts, would then end up in a corner. Many of these bikes will be displayed telling stories of their own. The “funny bike” is a drag motorcycle that looks like a street bike, and it has a long history. Price first started street racing with a 1953 Harley Model K. In 1967, he began racing on the strip with a Sportster and worked his way up the classes. Dur-

By: Rose and Lloyd On Friday and Sat June 1-2 a benefit was held for the Lucas Cole Nixon Foundation and Dungeon Boxing Club at Rockingham Dragway. We were fortunate to participate in the ride held by the Dungeon Boxing Club and Ol Skool Tribe. The weather was beautiful and the cause to help the Lucas Cole Nixon Foundation was inspiring. The president of the Dungeon Boxing Club, Danny Smith, took us on a journey through beautiful countryside to and Indian reservation called Town Creek Indian Mound. It was fascinating to hear the other riders explain the history. The next stop was a small bar call Double Deuce. They provided food and beverages for everyone. The people were great and it was an honor to spend time with them and help out this cause. We were then escorted into the dragway, for some live entertainment, vendors, and socializing with wonderful people. It made for a wonderful ride and a beautiful day, and a lot of new friends. Thanks Dugeon Boxing Club and Ol Skool Tribe for all you did.

excitement and anticipation was building among the seven contestants, the judges, and for those in attendance, too. Then it was time. Courtney Lakin was chosen as Second Runner Up. After a brief pause, it was announced Chandler King was the First Runner Up. And now it was time for what everyone had been waiting for. The announcement of which young lady would be the First Ever Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson. And then the MC announced the winner of the Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson Contest and it was Britteny Pierce. Congratulations to Britteny, First Runner Up Chandler King, and Second Runner Up Courtney Lakin. The other ladies, Amber Buchanan, Jeni Strickland, Amber Burgess, and Jessica West, were great sports and it had to be tough on each of the judges on their decisions for the winner and runner-ups. I would like to thank everyone at Down Home Harley-Davidson for a fun day and a great event. We would like to thank and show our appreciation for the band, GINGER, for the fabulous entertainment during the event as well. Harley-Davidson World Ride Tallies 7.8 Million Miles

Milwaukee (June 29, 2012) – The Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), the official riding club of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, is proud to announce that Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders around the world collectively logged 7,799,140 miles during the 2012 Harley-Davidson World Ride on June 24-25. After its launch in 2008 as Million Mile Monday, the annual event was expanded into the two-day World Ride for 2012 to give more riders worldwide an opportunity to participate, resulting in the largest total of collective mileage in the event’s history by a wide margin, with this year’s total eclipsing the previous single-day mileage record by more than 85 percent. “The tremendous turnout by Harley-Davidson riders for the World Ride showcases the universal appeal of the Harley-Davidson riding experience and the global power of the brand,” said Nigel Villiers, Harley-Davidson Director of H.O.G. and Customer Experience International. “Harley-Davidson is all about providing globally epic motorcycling experiences for a worldwide community of riders and this year’s World Ride truly set a new standard.” Riders from more than 66 countries participated in the World Ride. These are the mileage totals by riders in the top five participating countries: United States: 5,994,276, Brazil: 418,145, Canada: 226,845, Mexico: 170,082, Spain: 157,287. Every mile ridden by participants in this year’s World Ride was logged by Harley-Davidson’s online mileage accumulator at h-d.com/worldride, where a rolling odometer recorded the collective distance traveled by all participants in the World Ride in real time as entries were added. Each participant was able to download a commemorative certificate of participation with his or her mileage total for the day. Story and photo by Alan Dockery The middle of June is one of my favorite parties at Riders’ Roost, the Spring Fling. By that time of riding season, folks are ready to head for the hills; the weather is great, and the water warming up. The Spring Fling also is the party when a bunch of my Hickory friends come to the Roost for a wild weekend. We started off Friday night with some folks singing and dancing in the game room. It was a nice night to sit by the campfire and plan Saturday rides, too. Saturday was a beautiful day for a ride on the Parkway or just laying in the creek. I had another good morning fishing, put some trout and bass on the stringer. Once the sun hits the water folks put lawn chairs in the shallows and start chillaxin’ with friends. The new party barge by the swimming hole is a great place to lie in the sun and listen to the rapids. As the crowd gathered down front for the band, several guys walked out dressed for the Men’s Hot Buns and Chap Contest. As the sun went down, local band Deacon Black cranked up the tunes. During their first break was a Wet T-shirt Contest. We danced and partied until midnight. There are still a few party weekends planned at Riders’ Roost and it is always a great place to stay when you are riding the mountains.

Hot Springs Bike Weekend 2012

By: Elwin Yee Haw! These guys throw a great party right in the middle of some of the best riding, (I’d argue), in the U.S. of A. From any direction, it’s always up, over, around, and down into Hot Springs. So throttle back a bit and take it all in, curves, culture, and elevation. This is good stuff. We throttled up on I-40 Friday morning around 2am, planning to hit 251(River road/Old Marshall Hwy.), north out of Asheville, NC around sunrise. An empty I-40 got us there right on time, sunrise cruising the French Broad River. Aaaahhh, great start! Following the river, it’s 22 miles to Marshall then onto 25/70 for another 16 or so up and down into Hot Springs. The ride up Dixie Highway (25/70) from Newport, TN is much the same for 25 miles, (we’ll miss that old steel bridge). 209 runs south from town 37 miles to Lake Junaluska, (could there be some dragon here too?) another 10 and you’ll be in Maggie Valley. All 3 will be rides you’ll remember. Great spot on the map Hot Springs. “Howdy, welcome to the rally. Enjoy. If you need us, hollar.” Those were the words that came with the wristband. Once though the gate, (not quite 100 ft.), my new best bud tosses a can of refreshment my way. Things get a bit fuzzy from there. Yee Haw! Everyone is having a blast, so I must be, too. Yee Haw! Yup, I am. Revvin’, rockin’, ridin’, burnouts, games, and contests, plus the ride in only bike show, there was a lot going on for 2 days and nights. With 20+vendors, local store/ grill at the gate, and the resort/spa across the road, this rally is a blast. I can recall the Artimus Pyle Band had everybody rockin’ till early Saturday morning. There were 5 more bands I can’t recall right off, sorry, but it’s all a bit fuzzy. The custom bike parade never stopped. There were a bunch of great rides. A bro streaked thru early Saturday, the sight cured a lot of hangovers. I bet he has a rally story to tell. Enough said. Show up next year and see for yourself.

A great time for a great cause. Thanks Buncombe County CBA/ABATE. For the 16th time they have held this rally in amongst some of the finest riding, mountains, and people in the world. See ya’ll next year, last weekend in June!

By: Angelica Roman Saturday, June 23rd was a perfect summer day- warm and sunny with blue skies as far as you could see. The roar of motorcycle engines filled the air as riders from all over the area pulled into Ray Price Harley-Davidson & Triumph to be a part of the big day. The dealership employees and customers gathered to celebrate Ray Price’s 75th birthday! The Trophy Husbands played live music outside through the morning and afternoon. Several vendors, including Motorcycles for Missionaries Fundraiser and Akea, were set up in the front lot. Groovy Dogs Hot Dogs and an ice cream vendor served up lunch and cold treats. Free watermelon was available for everyone. Just before noon, the birthday cakes were displayed, one with a photo of Ray and another with a photo of the Ray Price Racing team at their latest win! Customers and neighbors poured into the dealership, offering presents and happybirthday wishes. The Caraleigh Community Watch presented Ray with a certificate of appreciation for “outstanding service to the neighborhood”. Freedom Biker Church, the Christian Motorcycle Association, and the Blue Knights made special gift presentations. The crowd cheered as Ray thanked everyone for coming and helping him to celebrate his big day, blew out the candles, and cut the first slice of cake. Anton G. “Tony” Whitaker Back in January of 2011 Tony had a massive stroke and has been in the hospital from January to May. Then he was moved to a rehabilitation center in Cary, NC. He had no movement in his right leg or his right arm and his left foot had diabetes ulcers that would not heal so they took him to Western Wake for an MRI to see why it would not heal. Tony Whitaker passed away Saturday, June 16th, from his illness of diabetes, pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and his kidneys shut down. There was visitation on Tuesday, June 19th at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner, NC and his service was Wednesday, June 20th at 1pm. Tony was a 20+ year veteran of the Garner Volunteer Fire Department and 30+ year employee of Dr. B. C. Raynor as a serviceman and doing repairs. Tony enjoyed photography, particularly drag racing, classic cars and motorcycles. With his company “Photos For Life”, he was a regular photographer with the triangle beach festival each April. He also really liked honoring fallen soldiers, 911 victims, reporting to the local newspaper, and taking photos of nature scenes. His brother, James, said that Tony really loved sending us pictures for The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and it really worked on him that he wasn`t going to be able to do it anymore. But James made Tony a promise that if he went to any motorcycle happenings that he would have the pictures sent to us in his memory. James also said, “He was a very wonderful brother and was very loved by everyone that knew him. My final words about my brother, Tony Whitaker: This I do in remembrance of him and may God above look upon him as a special angel. He is finally living peacefully and is not hurtin like he had been for the past two years. May God bless him.” Rest In Peace, Tony.

Our priorities are: Professional development of our members, community involvement, and assisting deserving student with achieving educational goals through scholarships. Our organization awards deserving students with a scholarship that our organization presents every year. On June 9, 2012, FASHRM and the Student SHRM Chapter of University of North Carolina Pembroke (UNCP) collaborated to host our 3rd Annual FASHRM Scholarship Motorcycle Fun Run. FASHRM began hosting our motorcycle ride in 2010 to raise funds to support our scholarship program. This year was no different for our organization. The scholarship award amount is $500 to Toni Barreto-Mikall. Each year we have been grateful enough to have a special guest to ride with us (Batman). Hopefully, you are able to join us next year. From A Spin To A Win

The Ray Price Race Team spins in Norwalk, OH and wins in Bristol, TN. What a great way for The Ray Price Race Team to spend Father’s Day, in the winner’s circle at the NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson Exhibition race held in Bristol, TN. The 1,000 horsepower Top Fuel Nitro Harley drag bike (Akea Express), piloted by Tommy Grimes, delivered a solid performance and a great show for the fans. The weekend started with ten Top Fuel Harleys competing for the eight qualifying spots, and after four rounds of qualifying, Grimes landed the number three spot, running a 6.332 ET at 219.12 mph. On Sunday in round one eliminations, the Akea Express was paired with Damian Cownden and took the win by just a hair, running a 6.364 ET at 220.33 mph vs a 6.393 at 218.41 mph. Moving into the semi-finals with lane choice, Grimes has another fantastic run. Despite dropping a hole near the top end, the bike powered through a 6.388 ET at 220.26 mph, moving the team into the finals. The finals bring a scenario we’ve all seen before, Grimes vs Horne! But the scenario ends differently this time. Grimes won on a hole shot. He was out of the gate first with his 0.025 light vs 0.064 light, giving him the win against Horne’s quicker run.
