he weather definitely has a hint of fall and cooler temperatures have arrived. The leaves are beginning to show some color and declare that fall is right around the corner. I broke out my cowboy boots today and I am certain that I will be zipping the liner in my jacket soon. But just because it is officially fall and some people are calling their events “end of summer” doesn’t mean that the riding season in the Carolinas is over. It isn’t! We are so fortunate to get to experience the change of seasons without having to store and winterize our motorcycles. As far as I am concerned, the riding season in the Carolinas is year round. The only time we cannot ride are those few brief little snow events that blow through. There is nothing like being able to jump on your bike without a jacket, gloves and all the necessary cold weather gear, but on the other hand, there is nothing finer than to breathe the crisp fall air and enjoy the less intense sunshine on your face as you ride. I guess that each season has its treasures and I, for one, enjoy them all. I hope that you are able to get out and experience and enjoy this fall weather, too. There are events coming up like Myrtle Beach Fall “Hurricane Alley” Rally September 29 thru October 5, and the American Motorcycle Racing Association (AMRA) at Rockingham Dragway on October 17-18 and many other smaller ones to round out the “season”. Then the toy runs begin. As always, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is the #1 source for event listings and coverage. Not only do we print and distribute more magazines in more locations than all the other local magazines combined, you can view the entire magazine online at FullThrottleMagazine.com. Submit your event for free or browse hundreds of others on your tablet or smart phone where ever you are. Do not forget to view and download any of our event pictures for free. You may be amongst them. Where ever you ride, be safe and don’t be stupid. Take The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine with you.

Charlotte CBA Fall Bike Show & Swap Meet November 14-15, 2015

By: Rick Nail, Swap Meet Director, Charlotte Chapter CBA “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. We’re so glad you could attend. Come inside! Come inside!” Emerson, Lake, and Palmer could very well have been thinking about the Charlotte CBA Swap Meet and Bike Show when they wrote these lyrics. So get your motors running and come on out to the Charlotte CBA Fall Bike Show and Swap Meet at the Metrolina Expo Center, 7100 Statesville Road [Highway 21], Charlotte, NC on November 14-15, 2015. The Charlotte CBA Fall Bike Show & Swap Meet is more than a swap meet; it is a reunion of family and friends with bikes, clothes, parts, accessories, and live music. It is going to be a final show for “Rock Bottom”, with a reunion of their old members. Don’t miss their last performance! What more could you ask for? Twice a year for the last 42 years, this show has been a successful gathering for motor-

cyclists up and down the east coast. The Concerned Bikers Association is a motorcycle rights organization. Unlike some big name shows that take your money out of state and nothing goes to support your bikers’ rights, proceeds from your

attendance at these shows and any other CBA Chapter events go to help fund our legislative activities in Raleigh. When you come to our show, you find friends and family and anything motorcycle related, plus you have the satisfaction of knowing your money is going to support your voice in Raleigh. There are a lot of beautiful and unusual, one of a kind, bikes out there. Have some pride in your ride. Enter your bike in the bike show and show it off. Entry fee into the bike show gets you in the show both days. The first 20 bikes entered in the show also receive a free t-shirt. There will be all new cash prizes in the bike show with $1,000 in People’s Choice Awards. There will also be $500 in cash prizes for the wet t-shirt contest, daily $500 gift certificate drawings, and a full bar, and live music. Times have changed. Styles have changed. Good times still roll at the Charlotte CBA Bike Show & Swap Meet. Will you be there? We hope so. See you there. Ride safe and free. Join CBA. Learn more at www.charlottecba.org. CBA does appreciate your support by coming to our shows…..THANKS!

Thunder In The Smokies Fall Motorcycle Rally By: WildThing For all of you that did not attend Thunder In The Smokies because of the weather forecast, you missed out! It was beautiful, mostly sunny, and in the high seventies during the day. The forecasted rain showed up in Maggie Valley before the rally started and never came back. The evenings were cool and perfect for bonfires in the many hotel fire pits in the valley. Chris Anthony had invited anyone able to ride to a parade on Friday 9/11, with police escort, from the festival grounds the few short miles to the General Carl Mundy Jr. VFW Post 12132 for a Flag Raising Ceremony. About 40 bikes staged up at 5 pm with Kevin “Fuzzy” Jensen, Quarter Master and Adjutant at the VFW, with his wife Stephanie, and members John Hooper, Steve Mellinger, and John Redmond leading the group. Upon arrival, the honor guard was already in place and Fuzzy and the members went to work immediately fastening the waiting flags to three new flagpoles mounted in the front of the building that had been donated by Thunder In The Smokies. Old Glory, of course, was on the middle pole, with North Carolina and POW/MIA flags flanking. A 21-gun salute and playing of taps concluded the ceremony on the 14th anniversary of 9/11. The VFW members in attendance invited us inside for libations and food if anyone was interested – and we were! Their hospitality was pleasant and we spent a few hours there before going back to the rally for the evening music. Again this year, the music for the rally was sponsored by Smoky Mountain Steel Horses and Friday night’s lineup featured Crocodile Smile Band and then The Justin McCorkle Band, a southern rock group from Greenville, SC kept the crowd entertained until 11pm. Then on Saturday we arrived at the Festival Grounds just as the corral in front of the stage was filling up with bikes entering the people’s choice bike show sponsored by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. The $1000 cash prize offered sure seemed to bring on many more participants! Everyone through the gates that morning received a red ticket with the

L-R: Tony Helms and Chris Anthony instruction to place their ticket into the upturned helmet beside the motorcycle of their choice. Chris made several announcements to that effect so everyone had plenty of time to make their choice. A few minutes after last call, two pretty assistants began counting red tickets. It didn’t take long, even though there were about 40 bikes on display. The majority of votes cast went to Tony Helms of Monticello, KY for his POW themed bike. He told us building this bike was a labor of love that took eight years to complete and he built it “to honor everybody who didn’t come home”. It was spectacular down to the last detail! The motorcycle started life as a 1993 Heritage Softail that Tony took down to the frame to chrome and build back up. I think every part that could be chrome was and he had the jugs diamond cut. The paint was brilliant white with black panels of the flag and POW image and trimmed with barbed wire pinstripping. It surely was a winner in a crowded field of beautiful motorcycles. Next on the agenda were the bike games. Here again $1,000 in cash prizes was offered to the points winners of the games with $500 for the most points, $300 second place, and $200 for third place. Grow Dinner Aquaponics was the sponsor of the games, and you can ask Chris or go to GrowDinner.com to find out about aquaponics. Of course, they started out with the slow race on bikes, then a relay race of people on bouncing purple balls, then the traditional weenie bite. All these as well as the plunger and TP game and the game where the ladies had to jump off the

Cruisin’ Calendar

motorcycle and plow through a haystack for a beer can. There was always one less can than the number of participant teams thereby eliminating one couple each round till the winner gets the last can. Chris had been announcing all through the afternoon that he had a new game to play. I don’t know how he comes up with this stuff, but he said that since we laugh at the ladies in the weenie bite and the haystack game, this one we could laugh at the guys. All the guys still playing were asked to line up and were issued a grass skirt and flower lei to put on. Then a cocoanut and plastic glass was placed on the ground ten feet in front of each participant. They each also received a rubber mallet. Chris instructed each guy that at the signal, they were to rush to their coconut beat on it with the mallet and when it cracked to pour the coconut juice into the plastic cup. It really was funny to watch and everyone, even the participants were laughing! The folks from the Christian Motorcyclist Association, who run the games for Chris, measured the juice from each guy into a measuring cup to determine the winner. They all got to keep their rubber mallets, grass skirts, and leis as souvenirs! The Vietnam Veterans organization holds a 50/50 drawing at each of the Thunder In The Smoky rallies and they also have the beer concession. This money raised goes to their local charities and to help local vets. This time the 50/50 split was $442, and that put a smile on the winner’s face. Saturday’s music schedule had Alli Randolph and the Outta Luck Band on the stage at 5pm, and then Jody Medford came on at 7:30. The headliner, Cody McCarver, came on at 9:30 with his special blend of Christian/Gospel Country music. The event concludes Sunday morning with a free pancake breakfast and 10 am church service. The vendors on hand stay open till about 3 for those last minute “gotta have it” items. Watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for the spring Thunder in the Smokies Rally in May 2016 and don’t play weatherman – you might miss out on the fun - again!

3rd Annual Walkin’ Roll Poker Run Story and photo by Alan Dockery Some of the old bikers in the Hickory, NC, area have a reputation for helping people in need. And it’s cool watching a new poker run grow. For the third year, Sherrill Baxter has organized an event to raise money for the Walkin’ Roll Activities League, Inc. They are non-profit providing free activities for children and adults with developmental disabilities. “Our league is a league of abilities, not disabilities. Our purpose is to provide quality activities in a fun atmosphere and develop each players potential to the fullest,” said Sharon Barlow, Director. I was proud to see how the bikers stepped up to raise a bunch of money for the sports programs, dances, bowling, choir plus personal needs of our neighbors. After all expenses, the sponsors and bikers raised an impressive $17,581. I think the three-year total is more than $42,000. “Next year’s goal is $20,000,” Sherrill said. “I’m glad to see we are steadily growing in participation. Some really good people are joining our team. We need everybody’s help to

We had a nice ride and there were several activities at the end starting with free barbeque, hamburgers, hotdogs, soda, and water. Frosty adult beverages were available. The Activities League Choir performed. DJ Mark Day also provided music. The Pro Wrestling folks put on a show. There were door prizes and auctions. You could make a lap of the fairgrounds on a cool little train. The local dune buggy guys were a big hit giving rides around the midway. “There are lots of people to thank for today’s successful poker run fundraiser,” Sherrill said. “Thanks to the volunteers who worked the poker run. Everybody involved bought shirts and poker hands and had a vested interest in the event. “Thanks to the sponsors and I know there are too many to list, but special thanks to the Lone Eagle Riding Club, Hickory Riding Club, Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson, Hickory American Legion Post 48 and Mark Day. Thanks to David Dellinger Maintenance Company for donating the barbeque and participation, and Dennis Hefner of Specialty Welding for the custom fire pit we auctioned off.” For more information on the Activities League, how to participate in their events and assist with future fundraising needs visit www.walkinroll.org.

9th Annual Camp Clearwater Chapel Ride

By: Trisha Beasley Photo: Chi Force White Lake, NC was the place to be on September 12th, 2015. Camp Clearwater Chapel hosted their 9th annual Christmas for the Kids Run. The annual event, which is normally held on the second Saturday in September, was a success! The proceeds from this ride go towards Christmas gifts for Bladen County Foster Children. The Camp Clearwater Chapel has also sponsored charity work such as ramps for the disabled, food for the needy, as well as funds needed for impoverished students in area schools. These are just a few of the great causes that they work so hard to achieve! Their hard work for this year, 2015; Well it certainly paid off! At first everyone was a little in question of who would actually be there and if the rain date would be required. But as the “roar” of bikes still rumbled in, the event was surely on! The day began with a sweet smell of barbequed pork around the campground. The aroma filled the air, as that is only one fabulous part of their tradition and lure to the bikers that take part in their annual charity benefit. With bikes in attendance, there was no doubt that this day was cloudy with a side of pork awaiting, yet each biker stood very much ready to take part in a day of riding and charity. Mr. Donnie Weaver officiated the commencement of the day’s events. The crowd joined in unison for the opening prayer of declaration and giving thanks for charity, fellowship, love and protection. As everyone is reminiscent of the teaching “…Support the weak, … It is more blessed to give than to receive.” ACTS 20:35 KJV. Kickstands were up and the ride was on! Rain in the air and lids locked tight, the riders were off for a successful fight. They were racing the rain as their pipes growled LOUD with delight! They made their way towards their destination in sight. From one county to another, motorcycles were on the road and headed through Bladen County towards the nearby neighboring County of Sampson toward Clinton, Salemburg, and Roseboro. The scenic ride was beautiful, wet and a little wild! And over and under and across the woods the rain poured down. But with pride and honor, the rain was no match for the spirited riders. They did not let the rain hold them back from their gracious spirit of giving and riding for a wonderful cause. The rain was certainly no damper to the hearts and minds of those that came with the heart to Ride and Give. Their spirit of love and giving was without defeat. The rain poured but not louder than the bikes roared. The ride back was free of rain and allowed the riders to dry off a bit as they made their way back to White Lake. They arrived just in time for the wonderful food that was prepared for them. The entire campground was filled with the smell of barbequed pork as the bikers rolled in with hardy appetites. With smiles on their faces and the rain finally off their backs,

21

it was time for everyone to sit back and relax. Everyone gathered in and took part in all the festivities and celebration. Camp Clearwater Church and the bikers enjoyed an awesome meal followed by fellowship, an auction, and door prizes for participants. Acknowledgments and thanks were given to local area businesses that sponsored auction items and door prizes. Camp Clearwater Chapel and Campground is notorious for their work with this and other charity in the area. The end of the day brought many pictures, smiles, memories, and lots of Christmas Lincolnton, NC gifts! As the day was wrapping up announcements were made about other upcoming charity rides in the area. The Mike Merritt Memorial Scholarship Fund is scheduled for October 10th and the Cool Schools Motorcycle Festival, which will be held November 7th. All bikers pledged their attendance for the next year’s annual ride. Everyone is in hopes that next year will bring even more biker friends!

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson Ladies Garage Party

By: Caroline There are several reasons that I love to go to the Ladies Garage Party: 1. It’s fun, 2. I get to meet lady motorcycle enthusiasts from all over, 3. It’s a good excuse to shop! The Ladies Garage Party at Smokin’ on August 18 met all the above expectations and more. The evening began with refreshments and a chance to talk to the guests. There were ladies there that rode, had ridden, or did not ride but have a common interest in motorcycles. There were ladies visiting from the surrounding area but also from other states as well. General Manager, Ray Perry, gave an overview of what to expect from the evening and introduced the Smokin’ team: Brother Bill - Marketing Director, Cody Sales Manager, Eric - Parts Manager, Bryan - Service Manager, and Jan - MotorClothes Manager. Ray emphasized that the main goal at Smokin’s is great customer service. I have to say this group is the best at giving customers what they want and makes it truly a great experience. The first thing that we experienced was picking up a bike that is down. That is probably something everyone should know,

even if you don’t ride. If you are around motorcycles a lot, that is a skill that will come in handy one day. The folks at Smokin’ gave some excellent instruction so that everyone who tried it was successful at getting the bike back up off the floor. Next on the agenda, was a spin on the Jump Start bike; a stationary full size motorcycle that one could try out to get the feel of riding and get to know the controls. Did I mention that there were drawings for door prizes? They were another good reason to attend, as 3 lucky ladies took home some awesome prizes. As the evening came to a close, I took advantage of the opportunity to get some early Christmas shopping done. I always look forward to the Ladies Garage Parties and try not to miss any of them. 9-11 On The Beach - We Will Never Forget By: Everette “EZ” Short On Friday morning, September 11th, over 214 motorcycle riders met up at the Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson Main Store to commemorate and remember the lives we lost 14 years ago in the most horrifically tragic attack ever waged against the United States of America. There were a myriad of clubs there for the event, like The Axemen, Blue Knights, CVMA, and The Reapers to name a few, but the majority of the riders were ordinary civilians, who were all deeply affected by an act of malevolence so horrific that everyone I spoke with remembers exactly where they were standing and what they were doing, when the first plane hit the twin towers at 8:45am. By the way, it was on a Tuesday, fourteen years ago, if you were wondering, that ours lives were changed forever. A few minutes before 11am, just before kickstands went up, we shared a heartfelt moment, as we all came together, hats over our hearts, for a spectacular rendition of The Star Spangled Banner belted out flawlessly under the larger than life Harley-Davidson sign. Let me tell you it was a genuine moment in the crowd, with all hearts on deck and more than a few teary eyes in the crowd. Before we mounted up, Pastor Bones held the blessing of the bikes, and if you were there, then you had to feel the power in the prayer he led us through. A few moments later, we were in a line of bikes that stretched all the way down King’s Highway #17 to #544 in a parade of the most patriotic show of flags flying that included quite a few of the much maligned Confederate flag interspersed among a flowing wave of Stars and Stripes. In a roundabout way, we headed south to find Broadway at the Beach for a ceremony at The 9/11 Unity Memorial Gardens. Coming into the park with the sound of v-twin thunder shaking the ground, we were overwhelmed, as we were greeted by the splendorous sounds of a bag pipe and drum core that made your throat clench up, and every hair on your body bristle with goose bumps. By the time the ceremony was over, with hundreds of red, white blue balloons released while the bag pipes sang out, everyone was in a solemn, but grateful mood. It was a good feeling, as we wheeled out of the parking lot, headed for Calli Bakers Firehouse Bar & Grill for a well hosted round of free food and prizes that afternoon. The feeling of brotherhood and pride that day was tremendous for such a sad day

of remembrance. Being held on a Friday made it difficult for a lot of people who had to work to attend, but it was something to see so many show up, just to say WE WILL NEVER FORGET... If you’d like to see more pictures of this wonderful event and others in this issue, just go to FullThrottleMagazine.com and see if you know any of these great patriots that showed up to be a part of American history. Be sure to check The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruizin’ Calendar for more events in your area when you visit our web page, and be sure to tell ‘em you found out about it in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.

By: Kathy Johnson Rommel Harley-Davidson In Durham, NC has a bike night on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. You really never know what the prizes will be each week, or what they will just give you when you show up. This week they had great door prizes as they do every bike night. What you received this week for just showing up was an H-D beach ball. I have seen many people get some nice swag and some repeat offenders win prizes multiple weeks. Tracy Huber had his name called on successive 2 bike nights. I noticed he won a really nice cookbook. I think he need’s to break it open and grill us up something one Wednesday night. So maybe we need to get on him about that! Aside from that, it is just a nice evening to see some people. Try to enjoy some of the events that Jack and his staff put on as summer is slowly fading away. I will tell you Jack has some surprises coming your way for bike night. So you just need to show up because you never know what your missing until you go. Before you know it daylight savings time will be over and it will be dark by 6 o’clock! So get out there while you can, enjoy the nice weather we have been fortunate to have, and I will see you at Rommel Harley-Davidson Bike Night in Durham.

Women Who Ride -Tina Groce By: WildThing It was a pleasure to meet and talk with Tina Groce at the VFW Hall in Maggie Valley. This vivacious young woman was having a wonderful time celebrating her recent marriage to Brett and honeymooning by riding together in the beautiful smoky mountains of North Carolina.

I asked her how long she had been riding and she said she started riding a 1974 wide glide as a senior in high school. She reminisced about how her classmates got together and surrounded her motorcycle at the end of the year and signed her bike, instead of her yearbook. How cool was that? Tina went on to tell me she was an Air Force Vet and had

earned sharp shooter awards. Then she went on to use her GI Bill for beauty school and opened her own shop. Even though Tina had a 2013 HD Street Glide in her recent past, she was very proud to show off her current ride, a 2007 Low Rider. She had customized it with lots of chrome and a very well done Captain America paint job done by Thomas Bland of Ringgold, GA. So, if you are ever riding in the Smoky Mountains around Tina and Brett’s favorite spot of Maggie Valley, Tina’s Captain America paint job will attract your attention, so throw up your hand and she’ll throw you a kiss!

Roaring At The Rat Hole By: Everette “EZ” Short If you’re anything like me, then you didn’t come to The Hurricane Alley Fall Beach Rally to sit around. You came to have fun and let loose. But let’s face it, having fun and cutting loose on your motorcycle has gotten harder to do, let alone find a place where you can legally do it over the last few years. That’s why I’m taking the time to tell you about a place where you can find both during the rally, at The Rat Hole. Located at 3809 Socastee Blvd. (aka Highway #707), just at the Myrtle Beach city limits, The Rat Hole is only open for spring and fall rallies. This year, the main bar is opening early on September 25th with the Motorcycle Rodeo (to start at 2PM) running October 1st through the 3rd. They will also be holding a Corn Hole Tournament on October 2nd and 3rd. The main arena for the biker games is huge, with beer, wine, and liquor booths on all sides of the bleachers big enough for you and all your friends to gather and cheer the gladiators on. Then, there is the rugged main bar, where contests continue long after the fun in the sun ends. And they serve $1 beers all day, every day. This year’s games include Barrel Racing, Keg Rolls, a Slow Race, Waitress Carry, a Balloon Toss, Pick ‘em Up & Put ‘em Down, the inevitable Weenie Bite and Chocolate Pudding Wrestling, as well as an “Adult Contest” nightly at 8PM. I was there for a couple of great afternoons during the Spring Rally, and it was a lot of great fun, with a surprising number of women participating in the games and winning quite a few of them. It turns out that even some young riders got shown up by the crusty old bikers that could still hold their own. Rat himself oversees the festivities with all the flair of a circus ringmaster, while his wife, the gorgeous Ms. Amy, is there to herd the squirrels into a controlled chaos of good

times. There’s plenty of parking all around the massive event grounds, too, with vendors and a little place called “The Love Shack” hidden amongst the trees in a shady place. And did I mention that admission is FREE? If you’ve been there, back in the day, then you know this is somewhere to go with something to do, whether you participate or just suck up some suds while you laugh your ass off from the safety of the bleachers. Be sure to check out their ad in this issue to find a map of how to get there or look them up at www.TheRatHoleOfMB.com for more information. You’re guaranteed a good time and did I mention that admission and parking is always FREE? Be sure to tell Rat and Amy that you read about it in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. When you see me there, hold up your mag for a quick shot and smile. You’ll make yourself famous. See you at The Rat Hole.

10th Annual Cumberland County “Shop With The Sheriff” Charity Ride By: Trisha Beasley Photo: Chi Force The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has been working with the needy children’s program for about twenty years. However, this year makes a remarkable decade of the annual “Shop with the Sheriff Charity Ride.” It has grown in number of participates which means it has grown in the number of young people that it can assist. Over the years, the number has grown and is supported by lone riders, law enforcement officers, community members, and a large number of motorcycle clubs. The ride began at the Cumberland County Courthouse, 117 Dick Street in Fayetteville, NC. This year’s ride took many miles towards Fuquay before their return to the courthouse for their meal. The ride was led by the sheriff’s department’s motorcycle units and CPs and followed by their SUV and CP units. These efforts are intended to provide a safe travel path for all riders while being lead and followed with the Sheriff’s Office’s full stream “Blue Lights” ahead. The cascade of motorcycles that rode in the middle was phenomenal. In fact, the “Village” was certainly assisting with the needs of each single child, just as the parable goes! The efforts of the Sheriff’s Office are partnered with WalMart where each student is allotted a gift card amount. This benefit ride assists elementary aged children with the purchase of needed items. These items range from basic personal items to supplies that they may need for school. This year’s charitable efforts will assist between 150 to 160 elementary aged young people. The “Shop With The Sheriff” event is scheduled to take place the first Saturday in December. Volunteers will also assist with the Sheriff’s Office in the actual store shopping experience. These elementary students have an outlet and resource that would otherwise go unfilled. The amount of need at times can seem overwhelming, but thankfully, the support shown during this charity event was also overwhelming and awe-inspiring. Cumberland County definitely showed their support for the ride. They caught a little rain, but it did not interfere with the mission at hand. In the present situation of law enforcement’s negative publicity, I think it is most important to note all the positive attributes that officers provide to the community each and every day. While their daily efforts may seem to go unnoticed, this day was surely noticed within the miles of travel, the community support, and the clubs that rode each mile. While you may not want to see blue lights in your rear view mirror, the blue lights of September 12th drew attention to all things that are admirable and commendable. It was with great pride that the community and motorcycle clubs supported such

a noble event! It is important that the community and personal benefactors are aware of all the hard work and tons of effort that goes into hosting such an amazing event. Lieutenant Leake and Sergeant Evans, both instrumental in the collaborative effort of the entire Sheriff’s Office, stated their thanks for the support of everyone that came out to ride, “rain or shine!” It is with heartfelt gladness, they were all smiles at the attendance and participation of this event that solely supports the needs of others! They look forward to next year’s “Shop With The Sheriff Charity Ride.” It is without a doubt, that this is a ride that should be on everyone’s calendar for next year! The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine applauds the efforts of Law Enforcement for each and every hard day’s work and was honored to take a small role in the outstanding celebration of community efforts on this day of humanity, compassion and giving. We are looking forward to next year’s ride as well. We will look for you all there!

Riders’ Roost Luau Party Story and photo by Alan Dockery Around here it’s been a hot muggy summer, so the best way to chill out for Labor Day Weekend was head up the mountains for an End Of Summer Luau at Riders’ Roost in Ferguson, NC. Saturday morning The Roost was filling up with tents and bikes as people rode in and out from exploring the great mountain roads. It looked like a good crowd was forming for a big party weekend. Lots of my friends were there from Old Roosters to new folks who will be coming back for more Roost Time. Once I was setup and ready for another beer, I plopped down by the campfire to hang out with friends. The Roost can be so relaxing and such a good place to hang with old buddies and catch up on life. And it’s great to walk around talking to some of the fellow Roosters, too. The boys already had a nice looking pig rotating over hot coals. Yum, yum, I love that smell. Folks were cooking all over the place. As it got dark it was time to get Saturday night’s party in gear. Deacon Black rocks! The well-known local band came ready to rock the roost with great tunes and their own light show. We danced and partied with one of the biggest crowds of the summer. You should have been there. Sunday was as pretty a day as you could ask for. This was

one of those weekends when the creek water level and temperature was perfect for just sitting and sipping beer all afternoon. If you got tired of sitting, the fish were biting from the little ones in the shallows to the big ones in the swimming hole. Teresa put some nice bass on the stringer while I was feeding worms to the little ones that we’ll catch next year. By mid-afternoon the pig was done and folks were really slipping into Luau Mode. I started seeing more decorations going up and grass skirts going on. Before supper Dave put on a Duck Race in the creek. My buddy Fireman Jeff won. The quietest it was all weekend was while everyone pigged out on pork and fixings and rested for a bit. Supper was great. I went back for another scoop of Lisha’s crunchy creation and most everything was all gone. As the day wound down, it was Luau Time. We spent the rest of the evening singing and dancing in the pavilion. This is the 25th Anniversary Year at Riders’ Roost and there are a few more good weekends left, so ride on up before it gets cold. The next party is the Fall Sprawl with the Tung N Groove Band playing Saturday October 3. The season ends with a Halloween Party that is usually a hoot.

The 10th Annual Red Knights NC6 343 Memorial Ride

Meredith W. The 10th Annual Red Knights NC6 343 Memorial Ride always hits a heartstring. This year was no different. It was a beautiful day at Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson in Wilmington, NC. A day filled with the joy of coming together for a great cause and the tears of remembering those who lost their lives. Excitement was building as the memorial ride was about to take place. Attendees came from all over North Carolina. Present were members from several the NC State Red Knight Chapters who were wrapping up the state rally. Also represented were Blue Knights, Green Knights, VFW Riders, and VEMA riders. Starting out from CCHD, the ride was set to circle thru the streets of Wilmington. 2015’s pre-registration was higher than ever. Each year 343 tags are sold to honor the lives of the 343 fallen firefighters of 9/11. Every tag has a name and fire company of one of the fallen firefighters. All of the commemorative 343 memorial tags as well as the entire event t -shirt stock sold before the ride began. Proceeds from the ride go to North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at Chapel Hill. Everyone who could gathered inside Carolina Coast with those who couldn’t fit listening over the outside PA system to Sara McDaris sing the national anthem and children of local firefighters read the Fireman’s Prayer. When duty call’s me, oh Lord, Wherever flames may rage, Give me the strength to save some life whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child before it is too late or save an older person from the horror of that fate Enable me to be alert, and oh Lord, guide my every move, for life is so precious, please don’t let us loose. I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me to guard my every neighbor and protect their property And if according to thy will, That I must give my life, then with thy protecting hand my Lord, I pray thee, protect my children and my wife. Amen There was a moment of silence before the Chaplain spoke a prayer asking for safety of the riders. Then everybody moved

out to mount up and follow the police vehicles /fire trucks onto the roads of Wilmington. Approximately 400 bikes, with over 500 riders, took about 7 minutes to pull out of Carolina Coast H-D. The feeling of a community coming together was overwhelming. It was quite evident as during the ride there were crowds of people waving hands or American flags to show support. “Thank You” to the members of the NC Burn Center who were in attendance as well as some who have received care from the Burn Center. A special “Thank You” to David Dombrowski and local law enforcement for their safe escort of the ride. “Thank You” to Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson for providing an event base location and support. In addition to today’s ride, a pre-ride party was held Saturday night at The Beach House featuring The Fury band. Local and visiting NC State Red Knights were there to promote the memorial ride and raise funds for a fallen firefighter. The VP of the Red Knights NC 6, Mr. Buddy Mizelle, organized this year’s Memorial Ride event. Nathan “Tank” Hall By: Debbie Anderson & Frankie Ingold On June 8, 2015 we lost our dear friend and brother Nathan “Tank” Hall due to complications of injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident on December 29, 2014. Nathan was a man with a big heart that would help anyone in need, at anytime, even making personal and financial sacrifices to help those less fortunate. He took great pride in taking care of those he loved. On August 30, 2015 we held a Memorial Benefit to raise money for the endowment of a Scholarship Fund for the automotive industry in his memory at Randolph Community College. Nathan was an automotive mechanic for more than 22 years. We feel that this is a perfect way to keep his memory alive and help him continue to help others. By: Rose and Lloyd Labor Day Weekend was a time to celebrate. At Rider’s in The Country the celebration started Friday and Saturday night with the great Fair Warning bringing down the house. Sunday was a special day as Jimmy Hinson of Fair Warning put together the third celebration called Goozefest 3. This year it was a great celebration. He got a group of five bands Kashmin, Nectar Unit, Flat Black Cadillac, Hugh Jazz Racket, and Deglaze, to come in and play in memory of a musical icon, Ronnie Westmoreland. Then to end the evening, Fair Warning, with special guest Tim Cross joining in, brought down the house. It was a great close to such a good day. There was great food, and many thanks go out to all who participated, not only the band, the staff, and especially George Rider for sponsoring the event. The greatest thanks go to all the family and friends that came out to celebrate. This is an event every Labor Day weekend, so hope we see you again next year.

13th Annual Catawba County Shriners Poker Run Story and photo by Alan Dockery The hot summer weather broke and gave us a perfect riding day for the 13th Annual Catawba County Shrine Club Poker Run the middle of September. By mid-afternoon the Newton, NC, Shrine Club parking lot was filled with bikers as they returned from the ride. While folks turned in their hands, the Shriners served all the riders and volunteers BBQ sandwiches and fixins. Outside DJ “Doc Hollywood” Crump entertained folks. Once we finished eating, it was time to go outside for some door prizes and to announce the winners. “We had approximately 230 people who bought around 300 hands,” said Dennis Grigg poker run organizer. “We raised approximately $9700 after expenses. We’d like to thank all our sponsors who bought ads on our T-shirts and the many restaurants and other local companies that provided us with door prizes. Also a big thanks to Aiken-Black Tire and Auto for their donation of a 20” TV and Hickory Springs for donating a beach chair with cooler and caddie. Theses prizes where raffled for L-R Winners Jeff Houser, Juanita Childers, Ray Benfield and Dennis Grigg. around $500.” The winning hands went to: Best Hand: $500 Juanita Childers, 2nd Best: $250 Ray Benfield, 3rd Best: $150 Jeff Houser.

2015 NC State H.O.G.® Rally

Meredith W. The North Carolina HOG Rally was brought to Wilmington, N.C. this year on September 10-12th. This year’s rally coordinator, Leslie Mitchell, along with her entire rally team, including her husband, who was the rally marketing coordinator, Will Mitchell, not only did an amazing job putting on a kickass event as well as just being two absolutely warm and welcoming individuals. Guided rides and self-guided rides were offered which showcased the area’s Civil War history, beaches, and downtown historic district. One contest this year included the dealer receipt contest. For a receipt presented from a North Carolina Harley-Davidson dealership attendees visited between September 1st and 10th of 2015 each would receive one door prize if their receipt was pulled from the bucket. They also held a tshirt contest where dealers from all over the country submitted their shirt to be voted on by rally attendees. The winner of the t-shirt contest was Beach House Harley-Davidson of Shallotte, NC showcasing a nautical pirate ship themed shirt! There was a tattoo contest as well as a slew of prizes given away ranging from a Harley-Davidson overnight bag to an FXRG jacket! CJ M. left with a brand new H-D leather jacket perfect for riding in these upcoming cooler months and Terry T. who was down with his beautiful family won the FXRG jacket valued at around $700! The nightlife entertainment was offered to those who wanted to get the most out of their long weekend. Thursday the 10th around 7 pm folks rode up to The Beach House Bar and Grill to the bike night as a kickoff to the long weekend. Friday night’s entertainment was touring the historic downtown district and walking through some of Wilmington’s oldest cobblestone streets to get to one of the newest additions, the Iron Clad Brewery! There were just around 500 attendees at

this year’s HOG rally who had opportunity to tour beautiful historic Wilmington on the Red, White, or Blue rides as well as the option of self-guided rides throughout the weekend. That doesn’t include the Wilmington Welcome Ride which took riders everywhere from the downtown riverfront, across the water on the ferry, along the coast and back. There was also a $1000 poker run held Friday the 11th with the lucky grand prizewinner, Pete D, walking away with a grand amount of cash. Each registered attendee this year received a custom rally pin at the event and great memories breathing in the salt air in beautiful Wilmington! During the closing ceremonies everyone was asked to look under their chair and pull the card taped to it. Those with a number on the card went to a small pool filled with rubber ducks to claim yet another prize and one of the winners walked away with that first place winner Beach House H-D t-shirt! I met and got to hang out with some great people from all over the country including Michelle and friends from Portsmouth, VA and a few new friends were made from my neck of the woods. A special thanks to the major sponsors: Carolina Coast HarleyDavidson, Coastal Beverage, Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group, and Billy Ray’s. A very special thanks you to the entire rally team.

Grant Each month I thumb through several motorcycle magazines and I came across some great information in one I wanted to share with my fellow riders. One article was about how to tell how old our tires are. From personal experience this summer my bike has sat a lot. I do, however, wear out tires pretty fast due to my small stature. But no matter if you get many miles or many years out of a tire, you might want to know when your tire was manufactured. This is easy to determine by looking at the sidewall you will see DOT then some letters then a series of numbers. The last 4 numbers is what determines when the tire was manufactured. For example your last 4 numbers are 5215. That would mean your tires were made in the 52nd week of 2015. Remember tires do not have to be worn out to be dangerous. They can dry rot and this is an easy way to determine when they were manufactured. The second article was about riding into a blind curve and being surprised by an oncoming vehicle in your lane. It’s happened to us all. A car approaches with their left side tires over the line. Sometimes it is just a little, but it can be 4 foot or more. There really is nothing we can do about that, but a great way to know if there is a chance of that happening is watching the painted lines. We are always taught to observe what is going on around us and that includes the roadway. Watch the yellow lines. If going into a curve and you see the lines are worn out or faded, chances are cars going through that turn have a tendency to drift on the line or over it. Approaching a curve and watching the lines will give you insight as to where to place your bike through that curve. If you see worn lines on a country road chances are there are a lot of out of work race drivers (rednecks) that live around there and they have a great knowledge of cutting corners (or so they think), So be aware they are out there. This is not an article to save you from yourself. Never drink and ride. Know your own personal riding limits and don’t over ride what you can handle. Motorcycling is a fun hobby, sport, or lifestyle, but it can be dangerous and anything we can do to help us stay safe is a plus in our own favor.

A Very Special Birthday Party By: Stand Up Photo: Chi Force The month of August contains the birthdates of some very notable and interesting people like Jerry Garcia, Charles Bukowski, and General “Stormin’ ” Norman Schwarzkopf to name a few. The biker community in North Carolina now has one more awesome August birthday to celebrate: The Wake County Chapter of the Southern Riders Motorcycle Club (SRMC)! The Wake County Chapter stood up in late August and had an open house and party to celebrate on September 5th, 2015. The SRMC exists to promote brotherhood and the enjoyment of riding motorcycles. The club has been in existence for 35 years and has built strong community ties through its philanthropic activities. The Wake County Chapter is the newest addition to the SRMC Nation and fully intends to continue the club’s charitable endeavors. The 9/5 party and open house had approximately 200 people in attendance throughout the day and evening as well as guests from other MCs and Riding Clubs. A pig was cooked and served and the party went well into the wee hours as the guests enjoyed warm friendship, abundant food, and good drink. Some of the events that will be coming to Wake County in the future will be the “North Carolina’s Funniest Biker Contest”, and the “North Carolina’s Hottest Biker Babe Beauty Contest”. These are annual SRMC events that have traditionally been held in Fayetteville, NC each year, but will now be held in Wake

County going forward. These events each raise approximately $1,000 every year that is donated to help fight breast cancer. Just as Jerry Garcia, Charles Bukowski, and General “Stormin’ ” Norman Schwarzkopf helped to define the American landscape, the Wake County SRMC plans to help shape the Motorcycle culture in North Carolina. So fasten your helmets, roll the throttle back, and hold on - this is going to be a wild ride!

Mike passed away September 4th at WakeMed with his family of close friends by his side. Mike was an avid Harley-Davidson rider and enthusiast, a documentary photographer, and a music lover. He retired from NC DOT after a career of more than 30 years as an engineer. On September 2nd, while riding home from a part time job he enjoyed, fate intervened. Mike’s last ride home ended all too soon. He was struck by a car and suffered severe injuries. In a twist of irony, the incident occurred on a highway bridge that he designed. Mike touched the lives of many people through his kindness, generosity, love of laughter, and participation in countless motorcycle charity events. He will be remembered by the photos he took and meticulously catalogued, and by the colorful light shows he produced during performances of his good friends and band members. Mike continues to impact lives. He donated the gift of sight to two unnamed recipients. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Toys For Tots. A celebration of Mike’s life was held on the afternoon of September 20th at Scooters Grill & Bar at 1911 Sego Court in Raleigh, NC.

B.E.A.R. With Me Benefit Bike Ride By: Christy Ferguson The B.E.A.R. With Me Benefit Bike Ride was awesome! We had over 40 riders join in for the 76-mile ride through Stokes County on Saturday, August 29th. Kickstands were up around 12:30, and the ride led us from the Our Place Tavern in Walnut Cove, through town, over to Rural Hall, up in to King and Pilot Mountain where the group took a 30 minute break at Cooper’s Sports Bar before continuing on the ride. Stokes County over to highway 704 where the group took a second short stop at Foothills Market and Grill then carried on our way back down to Walnut Cove and the Our Place Tavern! After arriving back, everyone wandered into the tavern for a delicious homemade BBQ plate, with all the trimmings! We even had many more guests arrive who wanted to come and join the support, enjoy the food and auction from that evening! The live auction was wonderful! We had two of the most entertaining auctioneers you could hope for, the Burwell Brothers, Kim and Kent! They led the activities with well-guided laughter and fun helping to cap off the event’s fund raising, along with the donations from several local businesses, at over $7000 for the overall tally! This total will help bring us right to the top and right where we need to start the first full piece of special needs adaptive playground equipment we hope to install in the spring at Germanton Park, in Germanton, NC (Stokes County). The INSPIRE group hopes that this will be the beginning of a larger concept in the development of a whole special needs adaptive and all-inclusive playground unit! We have been working closely with the Germanton Park board on design

ideas and concepts for a future playground endeavor. In order to work towards the effort though, we will continue to do all we can to raise funds and purchase more equipment until the goal is met and an all-inclusive well-rounded essential “full-needs-met” established playground is installed and ready for use! We do have future plans for our next fundraisers to help with this goal. We will have a wonderful “Evening with the Tortuga Twins” event in October, a Spring into Family Fun event in the spring, and a second annual Bike Ride next year. Those interested in joining us can visit our Facebook page @ InspireStokesCounty, or call our group’s president, Mitzi Britt, at 336-591-5400, or even email us at InspireStokesCounty@ yahoo.com. Continued monetary support can also be arranged by visiting the Go Fund Me page @ “We Want To Play Too”.

Jenna’s Ride

By: Joy Moose The weather was perfect on July 25th for a good ride among friends both old and new as 73 bikes and 1 Corvette were escorted by the Iredell County Motor Squad from Tilley’s Harley-Davidson in Statesville on an 86 mile ride through scenic Iredell County. The turnout of bikes was overwhelming for a 14-year-old young lady and her family who lives in Iredell County going through a difficult time Jenna Ballard is young lady who loves playing soccer and taking care of her cows and chickens. She has a smile that lights up any room she enters. Earlier this year she had to have an appendectomy. After the surgery, tests showed that she had Carcinoid Tumors, which actually caused the attack. She was sent to Wake Forest Medical where they removed 12” of her intestines. With Jenna’s uplifting personality her only concern was how long before she would able to play soccer and eat. Her parents are hardworking people raising 2 teenage girls and even though they had insurance this put a strain on them. Tilley Harley-Davidson graciously allowed the use of their

Statesville facility where Jenna’s Ride began and ended. Vendors were set up at Tilley’s for the riders and non-riders to enjoy and find some great deals. Eddie Phelps came from Walkertown to provide sno cones and funnel cakes donating his money to this sweet girl. Many businesses in the county and the surrounding areas donated items for an auction. Many Rolling Thunder members from Chapter 6 and Chapter 2 came and showed their support for this sweet young lady. Special thanks to Andy Taylor who donated a 2 night stay at The Valley Inn in beautiful Maggie Valley, NC, a biker’s paradise. After the ride returned, the riders enjoyed music provided by Gene Cheeks and Dirty Honey and a fantastic summertime meal, while socializing with each other. Supporters came from as far away as Maryland and South Carolina. Everyone that came out had a good time. The family is thankful to each person who came to help raise awareness for Carcinoid Cancer and helped raise over $5,000. You can still support Jenna even though you missed a wonderful day by sending her a card to 316 Dunlap Gate Rd. Statesville, NC 28625.

Benefit Bike Night & Memorial For Mike Godwin By: Kathy Johnson & Mark Infield There was a benefit bike night for Big Mike Godwin at Rommel Harley-Davidson in Durham. Mike died on August 13 in Durham when his motorcycle was struck by a truck that made an illegal left turn. The bike night was held Wednesday, August 19th before the Saturday service and benefit lunch at Crazy Shots in Hillsborough. The reasons for having it was to make sure that everyone had the opportunity to be among other friends and contribute funds for the funeral expenses. It also gave people the chance to be among other good friends of Mike’s if they could not attend the Saturday service. It was just a huge wave of people and motorcycles. I would say at least 350 or more people showed up. It was so nice to see all the people sharing the memories Mike gave them. The volunteers were all, in my eyes, people he spent a considerable amount of time with or talked to or about quite often. When I say talked about that is in the highest regards and meant there were some great stories involved. What a red carpet Jack Marvel, GM of Rommel H-D, rolled out. His employees that were off that evening came in and worked and made sure that anything that was forgotten got taken care of right down to moving grills with a fork lift and donations and door prizes. It made me realized how everyone at Rommel H-D had become not just our local dealership, but they were there for us as friends. Triangle Tap was there selling beer and donating money off of each beer he sold to Mike’s family for expenses. DJ Heavy handled all the announcing wearing the microphone out all

evening and putting music out there for everyone! All the people there just wanted to do something in some way to help them cope with the magnitude of Mike’s death. Taking it in, seeing people work so hard and having a great time doing it felt good. It felt good knowing everyone there was there because Mike was in their life at one time or another. On Saturday, August 22nd many of Mike’s club brothers rolled into Fellowship Baptist Church in Durham for a memorial of Mike’s life. Clubs from North and South Carolina and as far away as California, Arizona, New York, Maryland, Connecticut, Minnesota, Colorado, and even Alaska were represented. Many local affiliates, independents and Christian motorcycle clubs were also present. Scott Brady, a lifelong friend, spoke about his life experiences with Big Mike. Other comments were read and told of how “Big Mike” had influenced their lives. After the service, Randy Dabbs released 3 doves representing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Shortly after releasing the first three, a lone dove representing Big Mike’s spirit was released to symbolize Mike joining the Heavenly Host. After the service many brothers and sisters gathered at Crazy Shots in Hillsborough for a benefit lunch before heading back home. It was great to see so many friends even though it was not under the best of circumstances. And so with fond memories in our hearts and tears in our eyes, we say “Ride In Peace Big Mike. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. AFFA”

Spokes & Jokes

60

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,” said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me ....” He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. “Come here quick,” said the boy, “You won’t believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!” The man said, “Beat it kid, can’t you see it’s hard for me to walk.” When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, “One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.” The old man whispered, “Boy, you’ve been tellin’ me the truth. Let’s see if we can see the Lord...?” Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord. At last they heard, “One for you, one for me. That’s all. Now let’s go get those nuts by the fence and we’ll be done....” They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him.

ing was, ‘Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!’ I’m like, hello? It’s only 25 cents!” For several years, a man had been having an affair with an Italian woman. One night, she confided to him that she was pregnant. Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he asked if she would go back to Italy to secretly have the child, in exchange for a large sum of money. He also agreed to provide child support until the child turned 18. She agreed, but asked him how he would know when the baby was born. To keep it discrete, he told her to simply mail him a postcard, and write “Spaghetti” on the back when the child was born. He would then arrange for the child support payments to begin. One day, about nine months later, he came home to his confused wife. “Honey,” she said, “you received a very strange postcard today.” “Oh, just give it to me and I’ll explain it later,” he said. The wife obeyed and handed the postcard to him. She then watched him read the card, turn white, and faint. On the card was written: “Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Two with meatballs, one without. Send extra sauce.”

The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome. “It was wonderful,” explained the woman, “not only were we on time in one of Continental’s brand new planes, but it was overbooked, and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine was wonderful, and I had a handsome 28-year-old steward who waited on me hand and foot. And the hotel was great! They’d just finished a $5 million remodeling job, and now it’s a jewel, the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us their owner’s suite at no extra charge!” “Well,” muttered the hairdresser, “that’s all well and good, but I know you didn’t get to see the Pope.” “Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder, and explained that the Pope likes to meet some of the visitors, and if I’d be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me. Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me.” “Oh, really! What’d he say?” He said: “Who screwed up your hair?

An elderly couple is in church. The wife leans over and whispers to her husband, “I just let out a long, silent fart. What should I do?” The husband replies, “First off, replace the batteries in your hearing aid!” A guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game. They had great seats right behind their team’s bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked the experience. “Oh, I really liked it,” she replied, “especially the tight pants and all the big muscles, but I just couldn’t understand why they were killing each other over 25 cents.” Dumbfounded, her date asked, “What do you mean?” “Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it, and then for the rest of the game, all they kept scream-

Blonde: “What does IDK stand for?” Brunette: “I don’t know.” Blonde: “OMG, nobody does!”

A woman was at her hairdresser’s getting her hair styled for a trip to Rome with her husband. She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded: “Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? It’s crowded and dirty. You’re crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you getting there?” “We’re taking Continental,” was the reply. “We got a great rate!” “Continental?” exclaimed the hairdresser. “That’s a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their fight attendants are ugly, and they’re always late. So, where are you staying in Rome?” “We’ll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome’s Tiber River called Teste.” “Don’t go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks it’s going to be something special and exclusive, but it’s really a dump.” “We’re going to go to see the Vatican and maybe get to see the Pope.” “That’s rich,” laughed the hairdresser. “You and a million other people trying to see him. He’ll look the size of an ant. Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You’re going to need it.” A month later, the woman again came in for a hairdo.

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car. Murphy applied for a forklift operator post at a famous Irish firm based in Dublin. A Norwegian applied for the same job and since both applicants had similar qualifications, they were asked to take a test and led to a quiet room with no interruptions by the manager. When the results were in, both men had scored 19 out of 20. The manager went to Murphy and said, “Thank you for coming to the interview, but we’ve decided to give the Norwegian the job.” Murphy,... “And why would you be doing that? We both got 19 questions correct. This being Ireland and me being Irish surely I should get the job.” Manager, “We have made our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you got wrong.” Murphy, “And just how would one incorrect answer be better than another?” Manager “Simple; on question number 7 the Norwegian wrote down, “I don’t know.” You put down, “Neither do I”.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

Where Are You? Greetings bro’s and broette’s. Well, summer is over and I’m looking forward to cooler riding days. We had our annual biker family campout last month and it was an awesome weekend for all that attended, even for a couple brothers who went down on their scoots. One was pulling his camper on the interstate (yes with his motorcycle) when the axle snapped after hitting a bump in the road, he said the camper then turned on its side and began pulling every which way. He spotted the shoulder of the road, crossed two lanes of traffic and went down in a patch of grass. Dazed from his ordeal he wondered for an instant, “Where am I?” Another brother went down when riding at night on a curvy country road. There are not many straight sections on this particular stretch and he, too, landed without hitting anything. I’m sure he also thought “What just happened and where am I?” Well, by the grace of God, both only suffered skinned up scoots and a few bruises and sore muscles. These are two brothers I know that went down in one day. Life’s road has many curves and bumps. And, Yes, I know we don’t live our life in fear of “what if”, but we do need to do those reality check ups some times. What if that was me? What if I wasn’t so lucky and that was the end? When you close your eyes here and wake up on the other side will you

have to ask, “Where am I?” or do you know today where you will spend eternity? One day we will all come to the end of this journey and when we do we will spend eternity in one of two places: Heaven or Hell, smoking or non-smoking. There are no other options. Here today and gone tomorrow. Life is but a vapor. James 4:14 says, “You do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Take a few minutes right now to ask yourself, “Where will I wake up?” If you’re not sure pray the biker prayer today. in “HIS” wind Popkorn

House Subcommittee Improves Motorcycle Safety With Amendments To Highway Bill Motorcycle Riders Foundation MRF.org 9-11-15 The Science Committee, Subcommittee on Research and Technology, approved two amendments that both greatly benefit motorcyclists. The first amendment halts the federal funding of motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints and then assigns a study to the National Academy of Sciences to determine the best methods of preventing motorcycle crashes. The amendment sponsor, Representative Randy Hultgren (R-IL) had this to say: “If the federal government is providing grants to improve motorcycle safety, these grants should be focused on ways that actually improve the safety of motorcycle riders.” The second amendment would prohibit the Federal Department of Transportation from lobbying for actions at the federal, state or local levels of government. Currently the lobby ban is only applicable at the state level. Hultgren added, “I do believe that we can be doing more to improve the safety of motorcyclists on the road, and there are reasonable laws that motorcyclists should all follow. But before the federal government casts down another top-down mandate on local law enforcement officers, we should be sure that we are not wasting valuable police time, while singling out and infringing on the rights of law abiding motorcycle riders, unless there is a compelling safety related reason for doing so.” The Motorcycle Riders Foundation would like to thank Mr. Hultgren for his dedication to motorcyclists. We also cannot thank enough the Chairman Emeritus, the Honorable James F. Sensenbrenner, for his tireless work improving the lives of motorcyclists across the country

Don Tilley Memorial AMA Pro Flat Track Story and photo by Alan Dockery The last weekend in August, The Dirt Track at Charlotte hosted the Don Tilley Memorial AMA Pro Flat Track race. This was the return of the AMA Pro Grand National Championship to the Carolinas and gave us a chance to see flat track stars racing the big bikes. This was a national points event and brought race teams from all over the country. The roots of AMA Pro Flat Track can be traced back to the first bikers challenging each other in the 1920s. There were about 70 racers here running two classes. AMA Pro GNC1 is the premier class of expert riders competing at the highest level. Their big twins make about 100 horsepower and looked like they were running well over 100 miles per hour at Charlotte. The stars of tomorrow come from the AMA Pro GNC2 L-R Tripp Nobles, Donna Tilley, Gene Church and Jay Springsteen with the class. These are the younger riders gaining Don Tilley Memorial Charlotte Half Mile trophy experience and looking to move up to GNC1. They put on a great show, too. Hot August Night Community Biker Night By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, August 29th, Down Home Harley-Davidson and Lucky’s Saloon in Burlington, NC hosted a very special event. Several groups and the organizations that they contributed to were honored for the work and fundraisers they have participated in. Several mayors and dignitaries from our community reviewed and picked the top groups as well as the top male and female. Those included Mayor Jerry Peterman of Graham, Mayor Jerry Tolley of Elon, Mayor Glendel Stephenson of Mebane, and Lisa Foster of the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce. The Most Popular Phrase heard from all the Judges was, “WOW! I had no idea!” And from all of the judge’s nominees and picks, no single category was unanimous. Butch Armstrong of Down Home Harley-Davidson was the Master of Ceremonies for the event and had some very compelling words for all in attendance. And I quote, “Hopefully, Today you have seen or heard more or been reminded about what goes on in the biker community.” “ Working together can make every ride or fundraiser bigger and better.” “The word CASH BAR ONLY • ATM AVAILABLE

Over the last year over $150,000 has been raised to benefit Alamance County and other areas that surround Alamance County. The groups that participated are Lucky’s Saloon, Burlington H.O.G. Chapter, Misfitz, Miles for Mutts, Storm Riders Elite, Tricky Ricky Ride, Alamance County C.B.A., and the Semora Sippin Club. Individuals from these organizations were recognized as well. Some of the groups that have benefitted from everyone’s generosity include Hospice of Alamance/Caswell Counties, Kid’s Path of Alamance/Caswell Counties, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, Cross Roads Foundation (Child Abuse & Rape Victims), The Wounded Warrior Project, Christmas Cheer, Toys For Tots, Alamance County Humane Society, Biscuit Foundation, Pediatric Brain Tumor Research, Sam’s Wish Fund, and the numerous rides and fund raisers for individuals and families with special needs. Some groups promote Safety Awareness for Bikers as their focus. How important is that for all of us? We would like to say “Thank You” to all that participated in the Down Home Harley-Davidson Community Service Awareness Event. We would like to thank everyone at Down Home Harley-Davidson and Lucky’s Saloon for hosting this event and for recognizing the groups and individuals who have given so much to our community. Thank You All!! No one does it better!! Ride safe!!
