hen you read this issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine the Easyriders Bike Show In Charlotte will be history and the riding season in the Carolinas is considered, at least by me, right around the corner. The next big event is The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February 16th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentines Day Party and Oyster Roast. Lucky’s Saloon at 1453 Industry Drive in Burlington, NC will host this year’s shindig. There will be a free oyster roast provided by Karney Law Firm (bring your oyster knife) and free chicken wings provided by Down Home H-D (as long as they last), Music, Contests, a 50” Big Screen TV Raffle, Diamond Heart Pendant Raffle, Giveaways, Event T-Shirts, and more! Over the past 15 years, this event has turned into the official kick off of the riding season in the Carolinas. The people who attend this event are ready to PARTY! They have been cooped up since the last toy run in December and are ready to let off some built up steam. If you plan on coming this year, plan on having a large time and perhaps spending the night. See the ad or our Facebook page for the motels nearby and be sure to take advantage of the shuttle service provided by Adam’s Towing. WARNING: DO NOT bring your children to this event. They will not be admitted. This party is for 21 and older. NO EXCEPTIONS. Over the years, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine has grown from a 40-page start up magazine to multi-media publication. In addition to the print edition we now offer a complete events calendar and more event pictures than any other publication on our website FullThrottleMagazine.com. You can also view the entire magazine online from your computer, laptop, or hand held device. This accessibility has helped The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine maintain the #1 spot in in the motorcycle publications in the Carolinas. We continually strive to keep our media on the cutting edge for your convenience. There have been other publications that have burst onto the scene, but they only lasted a few months or a few years. For us, publishing The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine over the past 15 years has been a labor of love and your support in readership and advertising testifies to the value you place on our work. You motivate and inspire us with your stories and pictures. It is about you; the sales staff, the advertiser, the readers. You are the lifeblood of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. So come out to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February, 16th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentines Day Party And Oyster Roast at Lucky’s on February 15th and enjoy a day of fun with other like-minded people. Full Throttle people. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Fierce Fallon Benefit Poker Run

By: Everette “EZ” Short On the first Saturday of 2014, over 175 riders signed up in high spirits under clear skies and blistering cold temps at Donny’s Saloon in Myrtle Beach for The Fierce Fallon Benefit Poker Run. Little Fallon Emory, who just celebrated her 10th birthday, has recently undergone severe brain surgery and will continue to go through radiation and chemotherapy. Her Father, Donny “The Dogfather” Emery and Melanie have always opened their hearts and wallets for local charity. This was our time give back to their little girl who melts hearts everywhere she goes. Leaving Donny’s Saloon to head south, we filled King’s Highway all the way to The World Famous Patty’s Dew Drop Inn off #544 in Surfside. Dave and Patty Nuth are another couple that is always the first to get behind a good cause and they didn’t disappoint when they rolled $ out the red carpet for us with food, drink, and fun for all. I have to tell you that David is the quiet force behind Patty’s 7pm boisterous laugh and wide open $ hugs. There are no Live Entertainment, Giveaways, strangers at The Dew Drop Inn. Wing Specials! All too soon, it 5828 N. Church St. Greensboro, NC was off to Mur336-644-9447 rell’s Inlet for a

visit to a new venue called The Crooked Floor Tavern. This place is ritzy nice with chili and wings being served up hot to a shivering bunch of bundled bikers. The day’s temps never went past the freezing mark and I even donned a full face helmet to feel all warm and look really goofy as the only full face helmeted warrior in the crowd. With the sun dipping in the sky, we grabbed up some dealt cards and set off North to find The City line Saloon across from the Myrtle Beach HarleyDavidson main store. JC Childers owns this tried and tested watering hole and he is another elder in the tribe that is quick to lend a hand when the chips are down. JC and Donny made some quick thank yous on the PA to get everyone we could to participate in a group photo. Getting everyone in one shot is like herding cats into a chalk circle, so forgive me if anyone got left out, but it’s your own fault if you didn’t get in it. Finally, everyone put down their disdain for Myrtle Beach proper to land at Broadway at the Beach for a grand celebration at The Revolutions Nightclub with a full on feast and some of the worst dancing ever witnessed. There were prizes and Butch won with the best hand, only to give it all back to Fallon, just like it should be. Both the Roughnecks and Knights Templar motorcycle clubs matched donations and several local businesses coughed up some serious dough. In the end, over $15,000 was raised for a wonderful cause. Hats off to everyone who showed up in the miserable cold, a big back slapping “Way to Go” has to be sent out to all the organizers and, to Fallon herself who showed up with her fan club to lead us in the Fierce Fallon theme song, “Roar”. Fallon is a brave little girl who deserves so much more than we can ever give her. If you didn’t make it, then you missed one hell of a celebration with leather clad giants dancing in a one time only appearance on the wood slats of Revolutions. If you would like to make a donation, stop by Donny’s Saloon at 1213 3rd Ave South in Myrtle Beach or call Donny at 843-4446113 to find out how you can help. Be sure to check out Fierce Fallon on her Facebook page to see her latest pictures and Roar on Fallon! We are all behind you!

Call Us Now To Schedule A Full Dyno Tune On Your Motorcycle! By: Sara Dean On Saturday, January 18, 2014, Low Country HarleyDavidson sponsored the Annual Charleston, SC H.O.G. Chapter Membership Drive And Oyster Roast. This annual event encourages chapter members to come out to renew their local chapter membership and to give other Harley-Davidson owners the chance to become Charleston, SC H.O.G. Chapter members. This event is also to draw new and old members to the dealership for some good Low Country oysters and fun. Many came out to brave the cold temperatures for this event. Fellow H.O.G. Chapter members from Myrtle Beach, Columbia, and Georgia braved the cool weather to ride into Charleston for some oysters and fun. It was a fun, active day for all. If you’re interested in becoming a Charleston SC H.O.G. Chapter member, find us on the web at www.chshog.org.

By: Grant So you got motorcycle riders on your Christmas list each year? Maybe you start shopping before Thanksgiving each season? I got a secret for you. Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury has an event you can’t pass up. For each $100 you spend you get an entry into a drawing for a $500 in store shopping spree. This year 2 drawings were held. On January 4th the second was held at Tilley’s. The only catch is you must be present for the drawing. Of course, refreshments were served to keep you happy while checking out all the new 2014 bikes and MotorClothes offerings while Fast Freddie spun some tunes leading up to the big drawing. First name was pulled, wait for it. Not there. Second name pulled, wait for it. Not there. The third name drawn, Karen Laney jumped up and gave a shout out. She had spent $200 in store so she only had 2 entries in the tumbler. I talked with some who had 20 or more tickets and they were not disappointed, just surprised. It’s all in the luck. Some may even call it Karma. You know you’re going to spend money any way, so now you have a big reason to do it at Tilley H-D of Salisbury so you can be in on the winnings next year. Look for the promotion to start next holiday season. But of course don’t wait. Do your Harley-Davidson shopping at a dealership that rewards you for being a loyal customer. Check out Tilley Rewards and stop by for some good old fashion popcorn and see what’s there for you. Pick up the newest edition of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine while you are there. Spring is just around the corner.

FTW Brotherhood’s 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off

By: Matt “Tater” Craven This was the first annual chili cook off for the new motorcycle club of the Triad, “Forever Two Wheels” (FTW). The cook off was on Hamilton Street in High Point, NC on Saturday, January 11th at 7pm. All our club members entered a pot of chili. There were 20 pots of chili of all kinds with names like Kickin Chicken, White Bean Chili, Slap Your Momma, etc. Over 200 people attended the event. All the guests had

an hour to test the chili. The guests voting for the one they liked the best determined the winner. Grady “Ol Man” and Jo Caudle took home 1st place. We took $5.00 at the door and kids ate for free. The entry fee was $20 for chili. We also sold out of FTW shirts and Hoodies. We will use the proceeds to help different charities and families around the Triad. Thanks to everyone who showed their support.

ABATE of South Carolina Lobby Day

DAYTONA 500 PARTY Feb 23 rd

By: Chad Fuller ABATE of South Carolina held their annual Lobby Day on January 14, 2014. I would like that thank all those that attended and helped make this particular lobby day such a large success. Over 200 riders from all corners of the Palmetto State attended the event that started with a free breakfast for all attendees sponsored by All American Heating and Air at Carolina Ale House. While downing the free chow, everyone learned about H3231, commonly referred to as the Equal Access Bill, as well as important committee members who held the keys to getting this bill pushed into law. After the educational breakfast, everyone was provided free shuttle service to the State House where ABATE members piled into the halls and offices of their elected officials. While at the State House and prior to the opening of the legislature, Governor Nikki Haley addressed the ABATE delegation as has been her custom. Members were also able to speak with key house members and senators about this important bill (the Equal Access Bill H3231) and those conversations swayed many a “no way” to “I will be happy to vote yes on this bill.” The members were also successful in getting

the bill moved before the full committee on Education and Public Works where the full committee will vote on the bill in the immediate future. Should this vote go well, the bill will go to the House and with some more hard work to come, the Senate, before landing on the Governor’s desk. As the legislature started the session, members loaded into the free shuttle back to the Carolina Ale house where Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group provided a free lunch. During the lunch we discovered how successfully our members represented the organization, motorcyclists from across the state, and of course, the Equal Access Bill. Thanks again to all who attended and I hope to see you and your friends at next year’s ABATE of SC Lobby Day. Remember, to ride free is not a free ride. Get involved. If I can ever help you, the office of McGrath & Danielson “The firm that rides” is located at 532 Knox Abbott Drove, Suite 7 in Cayce, SC 803-926-7501.

State-Based Cost Of Death From Crashes

Once again, the decision made by a majority of states to allow their adult motorcycle riders to choose whether or not to wear a helmet is being called into question. The latest attack comes from the Community Preventive Services Task Force. The task force is comprised of fifteen members who are appointed by the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The task force makes recommendations to the CDC and reports to the U.S. Congress about community preventative services, programs, and policies aimed at improving health. The task force is set to report that a universal helmet law would reduce injuries and deaths, as well as result in economic benefits. (http://www.bikernewsonline.com/2013/11/ federal-government-preparing-for.html) This has been the position of the CDC for years. The CDC advocates mandatory motorcycle helmet laws in all states despite the decision to the contrary of what is currently thirty-one state legislative bodies. The public cost argument continues to frighten many despite the fact that there is no solid data to support it. There is no evidence that the rates of either motor vehicle insurance or health insurance have risen as a result of any state enacting laws allowing adults to choose whether or not to wear a motorcycle helmet. Yet, the argument persists and is simply accepted as true. As many of you know, I have repeatedly searched for empirical evidence to support the argument that enacting laws to allow adults to choose whether or not to wear a motorcycle helmet results in increased costs to the public. Each time, however, I come up short. I can find many organizations that make that claim without explaining how they came to that conclusion. On the rare occasions that I have found an organization that publishes the actual data that it relied upon in determining that mandatory helmet laws create an economic benefit, it has turned out that the data fails to support the position. In fact, upon close scrutiny the data has time and time again showed that mandatory motorcycle helmet laws have no discernible impact on either public safety or public costs. Given this latest attempt to re-package the argument I decided to give this another try. I went searching for proof that allowing adults to choose whether or not to wear a motorcycle helmet increases costs to the public at large. In doing so I had one rule, I would not rely on someone’s interpretation of what any data meant. In other words, it was not enough that a particular group reported that health care or other costs rise as a result of choice laws. I wanted to see the actual data upon which the group relied in coming to that conclusion. I started looking for a breakdown of health care costs by both state and where the money was spent. I wanted to see how much money was being spent as a result of motorcycle crashes in each state, but that led nowhere. I could not find anything broken down in a manner that would allow a comparison between states that allow choice and states that have mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. However, in searching for that data, I found a study done by none other than the Centers

25

for Disease Control and Prevention, the very entity that has been calling for mandatory helmet laws nationwide. The study is entitled “State-Based Cost of Death from Crashes. The study looked at the cost of crash fatalities for the year 2005 in both medical and work loss costs. (http://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/statecosts/) In this study, the CDC went state by state and broke down the cost of crash fatalities by the type of victim and the percentage of costs that the victim category represented as to overall costs. For instance, if you go to California, you will see that in 2005 the total crash related death costs were $4.16 billion. You can further see that motorcyclists accounted for $422 million, which is 10% of the overall costs for California that year. Admittedly the CDC did not explain how these costs were calculated, but given that this was the closest I had come to finding what I was looking for I decided to use this study to test the public cost argument. Given the well-known position of the CDC, I certainly could not be accused of using data that was purposefully created to counter the public cost argument. The next thing that was needed to make sense of this data was motorcycle registrations by state for that year. This information was published by the Federal Highway Administration. (http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/policy/ohim/hs05/pdf/mv1.pdf) I had to exclude registrations from Washington, DC since it was not included in the CDC study. After compiling the data and identifying which states had mandatory helmet laws in 2005 and which did not, it was possible to compare how states that had mandatory helmet laws stacked up against states that allowed adults to make their own choice regarding helmet use. It is important to note that in 2005 Michigan had a mandatory motorcycle helmet law. Therefore we had 20 mandatory states, which accounted for 2,577,329 motorcycle registrations (41.4% of total U.S. motorcycle registrations), and 30 choice states, which accounted for 3,648,626 motorcycle registrations. (58.6% of total U.S. motorcycle registrations) According to the CDC, the total cost of deaths from crashes in 2005 was $4,352,000,000. The states that allowed adult choice regarding motorcycle helmet use accounted for $2,446,000,000 or 56% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. The states that had mandatory helmet laws accounted for $1,906,000,000 or 44% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. Another way to put that is that in 2005, 60% of states allowed adult choice, had 58% of all motorcycle registrations, and accounted for 56% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. On the other hand, 40% of states had mandatory helmet laws, had 42% of all registered motorcycles, and accounted for 44% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. I will allow each reader to make their own decision in determining whether these numbers support the public cost argument. Our analysis should not stop here. It is also important to look at the percentage of total cost of deaths from crashes that motorcyclists represent in each of the two groups of states. Continued On Pg 24

26 Continued From Pg 23

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

In the 30 states that allowed adult choice, motorcyclists accounted for an average of 11.26% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. In the 20 states that had mandatory helmet laws, motorcyclists accounted for an average of 10.45% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. To simplify this, states that allowed adults to make their own choice accounted for 0.81 % more of the total percentage of the cost of deaths from crashes than did the 20 states that had mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. That seems to be a statistically insignificant number. That being said, let’s take into consideration additional data which is helpful in making a meaningful comparison. The additional data concerns total motor vehicle registrations in each group of states. When we take into consideration registrations of cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles in each group of states, the numbers become clearer. In the states that allowed choice, motorcycles made up 2.99% of all motor vehicle registrations. In the states that had mandatory motorcycle helmet laws, motorcycles made up 2.05% of all motor vehicle registrations. That means that the choice states had a 0.94% higher ratio of motorcycles to automobiles, buses and trucks than did the mandatory states. That 0.94% difference in ratio of motorcycles to other motor vehicle registrations more than makes up for the 0.81% difference of percentage of total cost of deaths between the two groups of states. The analysis of percentage of total cost of deaths from crashes between mandatory states and choice states fails to support the public cost argument. The last comparison that was made was the most difficult. I wanted to compare states that were in the same geographic area, had similar numbers in terms of motorcycle registrations, and had similar climates. It was important not to compare a state from the north to a state from the south given the fact that the southern state would have a longer riding season, and therefore more motorcycle miles traveled in any given year. I also excluded states with major motorcycle rallies since having 500,000 motorcyclists flock to a city for a ten-day event can throw comparison numbers off. I was able to find four meaningful comparisons. They were Wyoming/Nebraska – Kansas/Missouri – Utah/Nevada – Wisconsin/Michigan. We will start with Wyoming vs. Nebraska. Wyoming, a choice state, had 33,500 registered motorcycles. Motorcyclists accounted for 15 million in costs, which accounted for 11% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. Nebraska on the other hand was a mandatory state. It had 31,610 registered motorcycles. Motorcyclists accounted for 13 million in costs, which in turn accounted for 5% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. I will be the first to admit that this comparison seems to support the public cost argument. Nebraska and Wyoming are similar in climate and region. Nebraska had slightly fewer registered motorcyclists and accounted for fewer costs and a much lower percentage of overall cost of deaths from crashes. However, if Nebraska’s mandatory helmet law was the reason for this disparity, how do you explain the other three comparisons below? For reference purposes M means the state had a mandatory helmet law and C means the state allows it’s adult riders choice.

State Law Registrations Cost % of Total Costs Kansas C 66,810 38 Million 9% Missouri M 81,396 87 Million 8% State Law Registrations Cost % of Total Costs Utah C 48,484 31 Million 11% Nevada M 50,648 53 Million 14% State Law Registrations Cost % of Total Costs Wisconsin C 303,439 88 Million 12% Michigan M 264,533 125 Million 12% When you break down the data that the CDC uses to make its point, it is hard to conclude that mandatory motorcycle helmet laws have any discernible impact on the cost of deaths from crashes. I am sure that some would argue that it is the cost of long term treatment and not deaths that drive up overall costs. However, if mandatory helmet laws have an impact on injuries wouldn’t we expect to see the difference in fatalities as well? One cannot seriously argue that helmets do not have an impact on fatalities but do have an impact on injuries. There are, no doubt, some for whom support of mandatory motorcycle helmet laws is less about a belief in helmets and more about a dislike of motorcycles, who would point out that, according to my analysis of the CDC study, in 2005 motorcycles made up less than 3% of overall motor vehicle registrations yet accounted for over 10% of the total cost of deaths from crashes. To those I would point out that this analysis was not focused on overall motorcycle safety but on the validity of the public cost argument made to support mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. I would also point out that between 2005 and 2010 not a single state has enacted a mandatory motorcycle helmet law. Yet motorcycle fatalities have dropped from 73.48 per every 100,000 registered motorcycles to 56.21 per every 100,000 registered motorcycles. Many believe that this drop is due to increased training and education that focuses on crash avoidance rather than crash survival. This is a strategy that is supported by groups such as the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) as well hundreds of States Motorcycle Rights Organizations across the country. Finally, to those who readily accept the public cost argument without demanding proof of its validity, I would pose two questions. Would you so readily accept such an argument if it affected something you cared about? Would you not demand empirical evidence before you readily altered something important to you? Of course you would. Why shouldn’t I do the same? Before I will accept the public cost argument and agree to give up the way that I enjoy riding, I will demand proof that the argument is accurate and grounded in fact rather than fear. As of this writing that proof is lacking. Matt Danielson, McGrath & Danielson, The Motorcycle Law Group 1-800-321-8968 Motorcyclelawgroup.com

Wind Therapy

By: Rose and Lloyd Are you a seasonal biker or a true biker? A seasonal biker has put their bike away for the winter waiting for that first day in early spring when the weather will be sunny and at least 60 degrees. A true biker never packs the bike in the garage for the winter, but is ready to ride on any nice day. It is a new year. The toy rides and holidays are over. All bikers participate in the toy rides, that is just a given. No matter what the weather, we get out there for the children. Now the days are shorter and this seems to be one of the coldest winters I remember in a long time, but if that bike is packed away and you have a sunny day that is in the fifties early in January, what do you do? Sunday, January 12th was one of those days. Since Christmas it seems the odds were against riding, stuck in the house, listing to tunes or watching TV. I know we were itching for even a short ride. Then, Sunday was nice with sunny skies and it was warm enough to suit up and get out and get that Wind Therapy. We took a nice ride out through the countryside of the Oak Ridge area, stopped in and visited friends and rode though town, stopping in at the American Legion to see more friends. Sure, it was cool, but what do you do,

when the cobwebs collect your head and you just need to feel that air flowing in your face? There is absolutely nothing better to clear your mind and to bring relaxation back into your everyday life than that wind therapy. To us riding is what I have heard people refer to as an addiction. Riding is our addiction, everything about it: the ride, the wind, being able to just let your mind stop and just enjoy your passion. Whether a few miles or a long ride, you have the time to know you are doing one of the things that brings you so much happiness being with friends and making new friends everywhere you go. No mater who you are, Life is full of worries. No one is immune to problems and stress in everyday life. As I have heard said, “If you are a biker you will never need to pay a shrink, or need anti depressants. You can always just suit up and ride. That is what we do. So if the next sunny day, you see two people riding through town and you think its not quite warm enough for you, or dang wish I had ridden today, it may be us, so give a wave and the next sunny day come out and join us.

By: Mike Spencer Despite chilly temperatures on Saturday, November 30th, the 21st Annual Kennedy Home Run was by all accounts a huge success! Over 800 motorcycles left Harley-Davidson of New Bern and roared up Hwy 70 to the Kennedy Home in Kinston. The NC Highway Patrol, New Bern Police Department, and Township #7 Fire Department led the procession. Crowds of people lined the overpasses and the side of the road to watch and cheer as the bikes thundered by in a 6-mile long procession. The Kennedy Home Run is an annual event hosted by Harley-Davidson of New Bern and the New Bern HOG Chapter. It is one of the largest toy runs in the state and always brings out large crowds. This year we were able to deliver over $11,000 in cash, toys, and gift certificates to the orphanage. Aside from all that, the kids really enjoy watching all those motorcycles come rumbling up. Harley-Davidson of New Bern and the New Bern HOG Chapter would like to send a special thanks to the NC Highway Patrol, Craven County Sheriff’s Department, New Bern Police Department, Township #7 Fire Department, Cove City Fire Department, Dover Fire Department, Lenoir County Sheriff’s Department, and Kinston Department of Public Safety for their help with the escort and traffic control during the ride. It is because of you that we had no incidents or injuries during the ride!

The Passing Of A Brother - Richard “Chief” Alvarez Sunrise 3-28-52 Sunset 1-2-14

By Stan Gordon On Monday, January 6th, a good friend and brother was laid to rest. The Freedom Biker Church of Monroe lost a dear member and the Union County biker community lost one of its own. Chief, as he requested his friends to call him, was a father, grandfather, and beloved friend to anyone who knew him. His long white hair and beard afforded him the occasional opportunity to play the man in red at Christmas and it also identified him as a man of integrity. He was a gentle soul who never got loud with those around him, a trait that we all could learn from. He worked many jobs throughout his life that took care of those he loved. His son told the crowd that gathered at the church that he was a man who kept squirrel money stashed away and if someone needed something he often met those needs. Knowing he was very sick, he and his wife ventured off to Florida at Christmas to take some grandkids to Disney World just because they had never seen it and this was something he wanted for them. I’ve said it before, you can tell a lot about a man by the variety of people that come to his funeral. Many folks got up and spoke as they said their goodbyes to this amazing man. There were folks from all races, age groups, bikers in leather, and church folks in suits and ties. Chief had friends on many social levels. On several occasions he would stand up and sing at church simply to share with others what God had done in his life. On the morning of the funeral I was returning from a doctor appointment in Charlotte when I got the call that my first grandchild was on the way as my daughter had gone into labor. Not knowing how much time I had, I wasn’t sure what to do because I had been

Best Selection In America

asked to sing at the service. The family requested an old Skynard tune, “Simple Man” and one we sing often at the Freedom Biker Church, a remake of a Zack Brown song, “Free”. Chief was a simple man, but I believe that is a good thing. In this time when folks don’t always keep their promises and a man’s word is no longer what it once was, Chief will be missed. The world has one less good man amongst the folks who dwell here. Please know that as Chief kept his promises, God in Heaven has surely kept his and Chief has completed this journey of life and is now reaping the rewards.

2013 Nazareth Children’s Home Christmas Toy Run By: Darby L. Dillard I can’t say thank you enough to explain to you how truly thankful I am for the support that was shown on 12-14-13 For The Nazareth Children’s Home! The weather, Forty degrees and rain, was horrible for a toy run, but our regular supporters were out in force. We actually had two bikes show and many more came in their four wheelers. My wife Betty and her helpers (she could not do this without them), along with our Rockwell gang had everything under control. Before the party started @ 1pm, they had the food ready and the assembly area ready as we arrived. The food was prepared by numerous volunteers from Horizon Lines, The Buffalo Troopers, and by many other fantastic individual volunteers. Our Christmas meal was fantastic! We even had plenty of tasty deserts! A Christian band, “Under The Son”, played a set ending in “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”. At that point Santa reentered and the children received their gifts. After that, thanks to many generous donations, we were able to give Nazareth a “group gift”. They received an Onkyo surround system for their projection TV. In addition, children received a new comforter for their bed. The only way that is possible is by people doing the right thing.

I can’t close without giving a big “Thank You” to The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Department and Allen Cress with Rockwell Rural Fire Department, as they were ready even though the weather washed our ride out. I’m going to close by mentioning our supporters who stayed with us through this year and in years past. Please don’t get the idea that we have more help than we need. We do not! Most of the businesses you see are individuals who all work extremely hard to keep their businesses going. We can use all of the help we can get. Thank you to Speedway HD, The Buffalo Trooper’s MC, Law Petroleum, Portia’s Pastries, M&M Landscaping, Wanda’s Star Gazer and Moon Walk Co., United Claims, Sic Customs, JT’s Floor Coverings, Smiley’s Cycle Works, and a huge thank you to the company that my wife works at - Horizon Lines (Charlotte Office) for stepping up in a huge way, my son-in-law, Seth, for our web site, and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Plus the personal donations along with the donations made by Cummins Atlantic and Bob Karney Law made the group gifts possible. As we get closer to 2014 I’ll be meeting with my contact at Nazareth, Cheri Peterson, to arrange the dates for the birthday parties and The Christmas Toy Run for the upcoming year. So keep an eye on bikerswithacause.com, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, Speedway HD, Bob Karney’s web site and other bike friendly sites for upcoming event dates. Remember! From the smallest donation to the largest, it takes all of them to make this work. Thank you all for attending! Seeing you at the home means more to these kids than you realize or that they may show. They’ve had many difficulties so thank you for helping to put some joy back in their lives! God Bless All!

Women Who Ride

Fat To Famous

in Winston-Salem, I knew which bike was mine. It was the 2013 Sportster Custom XL1200CP sitting all by itself in the middle of the show room. She was glossy black with pink and purple flames. Exactly how I pictured her when I designed my dream bike online. I was getting this motorcycle. I EARNED it! A few months later, I saw a posting from Harley-Davidson about a competition they were hosting. They wanted female riders to write a short essay on what motivated them to ride a HD motorcycle. I figured I would give it a shot. After all, the prizes for winning were totally awesome. Never in a million years did I expect to be contacted with congratulations! Out of the entire country, Harley-Davidson had picked me and 9 other women as America’s 10 Most Independent, Freedom-Loving Women. Wow! They contacted me and said they thoroughly enjoyed the inspiration I gave of my story of motivation for weight loss. They wanted it added to the Harley-Davidson website for everyone to see! By this time I had lost 115 pounds. Along with my winnings, I had received a new push of confidence from my new title. Here I was, with a gorgeous motorcycle, losing weight, winning prizes, gaining recognition, I was unstoppable! Riding my motorcycle made me feel amazing. When I felt my resolve wavering, I would pull her out and go for a ride. Road therapy helped me stay committed to my weight loss goals. Apparently my story caught the attention of local media as well. It didn’t take long before WXII

Metal Phoenix Photography, Winston-Salem, NC

By: Amanda Coley Harley-Davidson and sexy. These words are synonymous. Sexy and fat chick. Nope. Those words did not belong together in my mind. Voluptuous, curvy, a ‘real’ woman, were words people used to describe me. Simply put, I was fat. In 2010, I was at my heaviest. The needle on the scale quivered at 315. I was quivering at the horror I was seeing unfold in front of me. Me? 315 pounds?! Impossible! Everyone tells me how beautiful I am. There’s no way I can be that big! Though I had been lying to myself about my weight issue, the scales were telling the truth. At that point, I was riding a 2007 Honda Shadow VLX600. It was a great bike that never did me wrong and rode wonderfully in all conditions. But it wasn’t a Harley. I would visit multiple HD dealerships across the state and drool over the motorcycles displayed on the floor. I was never ashamed to be riding something other than a Harley, but I was ashamed that I didn’t feel like I deserved a Harley. It seemed blasphemous for a chick that couldn’t ride on a rollercoaster because she was too big for the safety harness to lock to even attempt to ride on such a beautiful machine as a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. That was when I decided to make a change. I went onto the Harley-Davidson website and ‘built’ my dream motorcycle. I saved this image on my computer and in my brain. This would be my motivation to make a lifestyle change. I told myself that if I could lose at least 50 pounds, then I would buy myself my first HarleyDavidson motorcycle. So my weight loss journey began. I couldn’t do it alone. I had A LOT of weight to lose and I’m female, so I was naturally impatient. I turned to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for help. They have a Weight Management Center made up of super nice and very knowledgeable staff. I went in nervous and came out confident. They helped me develop a plan and scheduled follow up visits to help me stay on track. I was on my way to getting my Harley! Fifty pounds seemed so far away, but I made it. That’s all I was fighting for. Fifty pounds so I wouldn’t look like King Kong on a mini-bike when I got my HD motorcycle. I had lost 80 pounds by the time I decided to get my dream machine. When I walked into Smokin’ Harley Davidson

Channel 12 wanted to do an interview with me about winning the competition and the story behind it. After the video about me (http://goo.gl/EXS2d5) hit the air, I started getting approached by people at work and even out in town that recognized me from the story. I was getting congratulations, pats on the back, even some people telling me ‘Thank You’, for the hope that I had given them to change their own habits as well. It was completely amazing. It’s been a crazy journey, to say the least and it’s not over either. I’ve lost a total of 155 pounds now. That’s an entire person! All because I wanted a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, but didn’t feel like I deserved it. I had to work for it and I’m so very glad I did. Now every time I see my motorcycle, I can’t help but have a huge smile. I’m happy because of the joy I get in riding it, as well as knowing the accomplishments I achieved in order to have it. There is nothing in life more liberating than being a confident woman cruising around on such a beautiful machine. I don’t ride bitch. I take control of my own life.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Fear Of February Party

By: Mark Infield Consider this your personal invitation to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February, 16th Attempt, PreDaytona, Valentines Day Party, and Oyster Roast. We say attempt because each year, we attempt to pull this off and so far we have been successful 15 out of 16 times. Last year at Horsefeathers Roadhouse was the largest event in the history of the party with over 700 motorcycles. In addition to giving away free chicken wings and steamed and raw oysters, there were door prizes and a raffle for a diamond heart pendant and a 50” flat screen TV. Horsefeathers also augmented the feast with many great selections from their menu. This year, Lucky’s Saloon at 1453 Industry Drive in Burlington, NC will host the event on February 15th from noon to 6pm. Karney Law will sponsor the oysters as in past years, while Down Home Harley-Davidson will provide the wings. Tim Nall of A & M Cranes helps out by providing the grill. Hayes Jewelers of Lexington sponsors the diamond heart pendant and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is responsible for the 50” Flat Screen TV. Down Home Harley-Davidson, Alamance Concerned Bikers Association and World Class Powersports will be on site with bikes and information. World Class Powersports will be registering people to win a Victory Vegas 8-Ball. And it is FREE! All you have to do is show up on February 22nd. Lucky’s is also sponsoring a reverse raffle of a 2014 Street Glide on the 22nd to benefit The Biscuit Foundation. Tickets are $100. Only 300 will be sold. Lucky’s will make sure there is music and plenty of adult beverages available. All of this, and, if we are lucky, moderate

temperatures and some sunshine, will make the premiere riding season kick off event one huge party. We always say, “Sometimes the weather is bad, but the party is always great!” So no matter if you come on your bike or in your car, just come! It is always great to see people that we haven’t seen since the last toy run and some we haven’t seen in a year. We want everyone to come and have a large time, but we encourage you to bring a designated driver or spend the night. There are motels right in the area that you can access without getting on any main roads or interstate and Adams Towing will be providing free shuttle service to and from the party. Please use this service and do not forget to tip the driver. Make your own reservations at: • Motel 6, 2155 Hanford Rd., 336-226-1325, $34 - $37 + tax. • Econo Lodge, 2133 W. Hanford Rd., 336-227-1270 $50 - $60 + tax • Microtel Inn & Suites, 2185 W. Hanford Rd., NC, 336-227-1515, $60 - $70 + tax This party has grown each year and we expect this one to be even bigger than last year. You do not want to miss this one! Start 2014 off with a bang at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February, 16th Attempt, Pre-Daytona, Valentines Day Party, and Oyster Roast at Lucky’s Saloon on February 15th.

Holiday Madness At Rommel Harley-Davidson

By: Kathy Johnson I hope everyone had a great and meaningful Christmas this year. I am sure a lot of you did quite a bit of shopping. I hope it was for a new motorcycle or some new leathers. If you happened to stop in at Rommel H-D in Durham, NC on December 21st, there was a bonus. When they rang up your total purchase of licensed apparel or any after market parts you got to pick a candy cane. On the candy cane was 10% to 20% off your total purchase. Keeping some extra green in your wallet is always a nice gift. I watched 2-year-old Brileigh Bobzien pull a candy cane for her mother’s total purchase and she got 15% off. Nice! I think Brileigh liked the candy cane more then the discount, but her mother was pleased. Well, as far as selection in the store, it was overwhelmingly stocked with “must haves” and putting a discount on top made it even better. A lot of smart shoppers were taking advantage of the deals. A few people were firing up bikes on the sales floor. Now that’s the Christmas tunes I’m talking about. That is one thing I really enjoy. When you walk in to Rommel H-D, if you like a bike they don’t make you wait. Get on it and turn the switch. For those people that just needed a little stocking stuffer, the Durham HOG Chapter was already selling tickets for the 2014 Sportster 883 Superlow or $5000 cash. Zoe was selling the

E’S INC

V

tickets for the HOG Chapter, but when you think about it, if the recipient of that five-dollar stocking stuffer wins the bike, you are now their favorite person! Even though Christmas is over, Rommel HD in Durham has something special every weekend, so check it out. What ever they have going on is different than the usual stuff and a pleasant surprise. Jack and the staff are all knowledgeable, helpful, and just plain nice to stop in and talk to. Rommel H-D is located just off of NC70 on the service road (300 Muldee Street) between Holloway Street and Cheek Road in Durham, NC. Call 919-596-9511 for information or directions.

Ride For ‘Marco’ 1/18/2014

SMOKEN’ JOE’S

910-228-5764

By: Jerry Stone Kickstands Up on a cold Saturday morning in January morning to attend the “Ride for Marco”. We joined in with ‘Combat Vets’, ‘Patriot Guard Riders’, ‘Leathernecks Marines’, and a whole bunch of civilian riders for a run to support a young Rowan County Firefighter. On December 2nd, Marcus ‘Marco’ Kaufmann, 25, was needlessly murdered during a robbery at his home on Chenault Road in Cleveland County, leaving behind a 22-year-old pregnant wife, Maryann, due in February with their first baby. It was heartwarming to see the support from the biker community as a sea of motorcycles made their way from Mooresville, NC to the Scotch Irish Fire Department in Woodleaf, NC for a blood drive and chicken dinner. Rest in peace, young brother.

International Female Ride Day By: WildThing International Female Ride Day is the brainchild of self-styled Canadian, Vickie Gray, “Motorcycle Passionista, MavHERick, and Entrepreneur”. This incredible woman is a motorcycle racer, instructor, coach, and journalist who has been riding since 1983. She got hooked when taking the rider training course in Nova Scotia and was motivated by the need for an outlet from her demanding career at an international company. She has exercised her passion racing motorcycles throughout Europe, established a riding school in the Caribbean, founded a non-profit training and support community in Amsterdam and built the global RaceGirl brand. She relocated to her native Canada in 2006 to headquarter and develop the new community and online magazine for women riders, MOTORESS, and introduced the now globally participated campaign “International Female Ride Day” – a day for women riders to ‘just ride’. IFRD was created with three main principles that continue to ensure integrity and clarity of the campaign’s intentions: 1. Freedom – for women to participate and enjoy the day – Just Ride. This ensures the unification of women riders internationally and of all disciplines and brands. 2. Open Good Will – woman riders can incorporate their ride around a choice charity without influence from IFRD. 3. Branding – IFRD is dedicated to promoting women and motorcycling and will not associate itself with any one particular brand or motivated body, leaving the individual female riders the choice of machine and enjoy equal participation. IFRD was originally introduced to occur the first Friday of May each year

with the objective of profiling and highlighting women riders. In 2014, the 8th Edition is moving to the first Saturday in May, the 3rd, to “facilitate the participation of women riders regardless of their countries of origin,” states Vickie. She hopes this will further the event’s expansion. International Female Ride Day© makes one simple request of women - “Just Ride”. Get on your bikes, be out there and be visible. The day highlights the enjoyment and camaraderie women share through the activity of motorcycling and motorsport. All motorcycle makes from two wheelers, three-wheelers, and scooters; on road, off-road or track take part. In past years, participants took pictures and wrote short narratives of their participation in IFRD and sent them to Vickie’s website or posted them on Facebook. For more information check out MOTORESS.com, exclusively for women who ride. Vickie’s website enjoys the support of Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, and BMW motorcycle manufacturers and Kymco Scooters, and all sorts of riding gear, accessories, and apparel up to and including beauty gear! MOTORESS is a proud sponsor of the Look Good Feel Better Program to support women with cancer, helping them with the appearance related effects of their illness.

By: Buzz Different folks listen to different music and sometimes the radio channels in your area just don’t cut it! Do you have an older vehicle that doesn’t have an auxiliary plug for your MP3 player? Maybe you would like to listen to your MP3 player in your office or home. If so, the speeCup is the perfect match for you. The speeCup is a portable Bluetooth surround sound speaker complete with gesture control. The portable 8” tall speaker is designed to play music and be a hands-free speakerphone in your car, home or office. It fits in the cup holder of your car and delivers great sound quality! My 2000 Ford Ranger still has the factory tape player in it and I have never gotten around to updating it. The speeCup allowed me to connect my MP3 player via Bluetooth and listen to all my favorite tunes while I’m on the road. Let me tell you, it’s a lifesaver when you have worn out all the local radio stations! I also found the speeCup to be a nice addition in hotel rooms! Let’s face it, Bike Week isn’t the same without some tunage in your hotel room! The speeCup delivered great sound in a compact body that fits in a saddlebag or overnight bag and allowed me some music sanity after hours. The speeCup has also been handy at home and at my office were I can use it to connect my MP3 player to any other audio system that has an audio input plug receiver! Using the speeCup as the middleman to my stereo system gives my MP3 player the ability to connect my music library to big boy speakers! The speeCup comes in 3 colors with a 20-hour rechargeable lithium ion battery, intuitive top mounted smartControls, and a Bluetooth range of up to 30 feet! It’s a handy device that can help you out with your music needs on the road, camping, at home, or in the office! Go to speeCup.com to order yours today!

By: Anton Spagnoletti My friend Charlie (Good Time Charlie) Hutchens was having some balance issues and decided to get a custom trike built from his Harley so he could still enjoy the thrill of riding a motorcycle while he was aging up, so he went to our friend, Mark Cheek with Little Rebel Customs, to get it done. Then Charlie was diagnosed with a very serious disease. His time would be very limited. Mark took on the project. Charlie’s goal was to ride on a charity ride with Santa Claus to Jonesville Elementary School and some nursing homes to lift everyone’s Christmas Spirit! Mark got his bike done but Charlie was too weak to ride. The Trike turned out amazing. He did get to sit on it when they put it together and was grinning ear to ear! Charlie passed December 27, 2013. I remember the first time I met Charlie. He told me about his Chevelle. It just so happened that my first car was a ‘72 Chevelle and I loved and missed it, so a friendship formed right then. We really had several things in common. They pretty much all involved motors and horsepower! The more the better, from motorcycles to hot rod cars and trucks! We also shared a love for our families and a faith in God. I had become a Christian at the age of 24. Charlie many years before I met him. Charlie told me and several others he was ready to go home to his REAL home with Jesus. He’s now at Perfect Peace. He’s got his new body (Fully Healed) and in the presence of The Lord! No horsepower needed. He’s got GOD Speed!

Spokes & Jokes

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

Sitting in a bar having drinks with a friend…I casually pointed to two old drunks sitting across the bar from us and said, “That’s us in ten years”. My friend said, “That’s a mirror, dip$hit!” A couple is dressed and ready to go out for the evening. They phone for a cab, turn on a night light, cover their pet parakeet and put the cat out in the back yard. The taxi arrives, and they open the front door to leave. Suddenly the cat they put out scoots back into the house. They don’t want the cat shut in there because she always tries to eat the bird. The wife goes out to the taxi while the husband goes back in. The cat runs upstairs, with the man in hot pursuit. The wife doesn’t want the driver to know the house will be empty. She explains to the taxi driver that her husband will be out soon. “He’s just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother.” A few minutes later the husband gets into the cab. “Sorry I took so long,” he says, as they drive away. “Stupid hag was hiding under the bed. Had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked. I hauled her fat butt downstairs and threw her out into the back yard! The cab driver hit a parked car.

A young farmhand is driving around the farm and making repairs to the fences. After a few minutes, he makes a call to his boss on the two-way radio and says, “Boss, I’ve got a problem. I hit a pig on the road and he’s stuck in the bull-bars of the truck. He’s still wriggling. What should I do?” “In the back of your truck there’s a shotgun. Shoot the pig in the head and when he stops wriggling, you’ll be able to pull it out and throw it in a bush off the side of the road.” The farm worker says okay and signs off. About 10 minutes later he radios back. “Boss I did what you said. I shot the pig and dragged it out and threw it in a bush.” “So what’s the problem now?” his Boss snapped. “Well, the blue light on his motorcycle is still flashing!”

fighters” So the Taliban sends over 100 of his highest ranked soldiers sure of victory. After a lot of gun fire and yelling and screams of agony the Taliban heard the voice again. “One American solider is better then 1000 Taliban fighters” So the Taliban sent his toughest, meanest, personal guards over the dune. After hundreds of bullets fired, and explosions and the screaming and crying, it was over. The Taliban now wondering what happened goes over the dune where he finds a wounded Taliban solider who says, “Don’t send anymore men. It’s a trap. There is really two of them!”

Mick and Paddy had promised their Uncle Seamus, who had been a seafaring gent all his life, to bury him at sea when he died. Of course, in due time, he did pass away and the boys kept their promise. They set off with Uncle Seamus all stitched up in a burial bag and loaded onto their rowboat. After a while Mick says, “Do yer tink dis is fer enuff out, Paddy?” Without a word Paddy slips over the side only to find himself standing in water up to his knees. “Dis’ll never do, Mick. Let’s row some more.” After a bit more rowing Paddy slips over the side again but the water is only up to his belly, so they row on. Again Mick asks Paddy, “Do yer tink dis is fer enuff out Paddy?” Once again Paddy slips over the side and almost immediately says, “No dis’ll neva do.” The water was only up to his chest. So on they row and row and row and finally Paddy slips over the side and disappears. Quite a bit of time goes by and poor Mick is really getting himself into a state when suddenly Paddy breaks the surface gasping for breath. “Well is it deep enuff yet, Paddy?” “Aye ‘tis, now hand me dat shovel.”

Ethel checked into a motel on her 70th birthday and she was a bit lonely, and thought, “I’ll call one of those men you see advertised in phone books for escorts and sensual massages.” She found a full page ad for a guy calling himself Tender Tony – a very handsome man with assorted physical skills flexing in the photo. He had all the right muscles in all the right places, thick wavy hair, long powerful legs, dazzling smile, six pack abs and she felt quite certain she could bounce a sixpence off his well oiled bum. She figured, what the heck, nobody will ever know. I’ll give him a call. “Good evening, ma’am, how may I help you?” Oh my, he sounded sooo sexy! Afraid she would lose her nerve if she hesitated, she rushed right in, “Hi, I hear you give a great massage. I’d like you to come to my motel room and give me one. No, wait I should be straight with you. I’m in town all alone and what I really want is sex. I want it hot, and I want it now. Bring implements, toys, rubber, leather, whips, everything you’ve got in your bag of tricks. We’ll go hot and heavy all night - tie me up, cover me in chocolate syrup and whipped cream, anything and everything, I’m ready!! Now how does that sound?” He said, “That sounds absolutely fantastic, but you need to press 9 for an outside line.” A Taliban was sitting in a cave when he hears over a dune the voice of one American solider: “One American solider is better then 10 Taliban fighters” so the angry Taliban sent over ten of his high-ranking soldiers. After a lot of gun fire and yelling and screams of agony the Taliban heard the voice again. “One American solider is better then 100 Taliban

In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered grave news: “There’s no easy way to tell you this, so I’ll just be blunt. Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year.” Visibly shaken, Laura stared at the woman’s lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself and to stop her mind racing. She simply had to know. She met the fortune teller’s gaze, steadied her voice and asked, “Will I be acquitted?” Yesterday scientists revealed that beer contains small traces of female hormones. To prove their theory, the scientists fed 100 men 12 pints of beer and observed that 100% of them gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became emotional, and couldn’t drive. No further testing is planned. An overweight colleague of mine decided it was time to shed some excess pounds. He took his new diet seriously, even changing his driving route to avoid his favorite bakery. One morning, however, he arrived at work carrying a gigantic coffeecake. We all scolded him, but his smile remained cherubic. “This is a very special coffeecake,” he explained. “I accidentally drove by the bakery this morning and there in the window were a host of goodies. I felt this was no accident, so I prayed, “Lord, if you want me to have one of those delicious coffeecakes, let me have a parking place directly in front of the bakery.” “And sure enough,” he continued, “The eighth time around the block, there it was!”

In His Wind

February; the month of love. This is the month many people celebrate Valentine’s Day. It comes but one day a year and people use the occasion to demonstrate their love to one another. We may buy cards, candy, flowers, jewelry, or even go out for a nice dinner. The stores make multi millions of dollars off of people on this day every year because we feel we need to buy gifts and show our love to our husband, girlfriends, children, or friends. It’s kinda crazy when you think about this character cupid, a little chubby man flying around in a diaper shooting people with arrows so they fall in love. It seems we all want to believe about anything that gives us a reason to shop and give gifts. Well let me give you a reason to celebrate! Let me give you a gift! Let me tell you about love, true unconditional love. I know someone who loves you more than anyone could ever love you! You don’t need to give Him a gift. He is the gift. John 15:13 says, “The greatest love you can have for your friends is to give your life for them.” Jesus laid down His life for YOU. He also took all your sin and shame and addictions and struggles and bore them for you, so that you may stand, blameless, before God, because He loves you so much. This can be an amazing Valentine’s Day for you. All you have to do is except the real gift, the real undying Love that Jesus wants to give you. Pray the biker prayer and receive the best gift of love you will ever get! Jesus is love.

Love And Prayers, Robin St.John, HLF
