lfred Lord Tennyson wrote, “In the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love”. Don’t get me wrong, love ain’t bad, but in the early 1800s when Tennyson wrote those lines, there were no MOTORCYCLES! Now in April 2016, when spring is apparent in nature everywhere you look, all you have to do is visit your local motorcycle shop to confirm that love is in the air, or should I say “in the wind”? Many of us have already had that first shirtsleeve ride of the year. I saw a guy riding in shorts one sunny day. Then there comes that flip-flop back to winter weather and you realize we are not quite there yet, at least not on a full time basis. But it is coming soon. Another good way to realize that spring has sprung is to look at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. There are events popping up everywhere! You can list your event for FREE on our homepage by clicking on the icon on the right hand side of the page. We list more events for free than any other publication or website that I know of. I challenge you to show me another, in print or on the Internet, with more! You know where to find me. SATURDAY, APRIL 23RD • 7:30-3pm By: James E. Jones & Steve Adam Motorcyclists and car enthusiasts know it is spring because it is time for Fayetteville’s Annual Hogs and Rags fund raising event. Hogs and Rags has become a staple event for motorcycle and car lovers from across the state. For those that are not familiar with this event, it is a sanctioned Fayetteville Dogwood Festival event and raises money for local charities. Each year hundreds of motorcycles, classic cars, convertibles, Jeeps and anyone who just wants to drive, descends on downtown Fayetteville for a day of fellowship, fun, food, and riding. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, April 23rd. We will begin at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Downtown Fayetteville at 7:30 a.m. Various Police Departments will provide a police escort the entire way from Fayetteville to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. There will several stops planned along the way with the first stop at the Rocking “A” Ranch, White Oak, NC, for a big country breakfast and door prizes. The group will then head out to the Horry County State Bank at the South Carolina boarder for a water/restroom break. Then it’s off to Myrtle Beach for a great lunch and the raffle drawings. Proceeds raised this year will be dispersed to the American Cancer Society, The Green Beret Foundation, Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation, as well as to our local Autism Society This year we are proud to welcome Fort Bragg Harley Davidson of Fayetteville as our Premiere Sponsor. Del-Ton, Inc., National Pawn of Hope Mills, and Guns Plus of Spring Lake have graciously donated guns for a raffle. There was also a raffle for $2,500 cash where five tickets are drawn and those five people decide if they want to split the money or take their chances on one ticket winning the whole pot. Come join us on April 22nd, the night before the event, at 6:30pm at Mac’s Speed Shop 482 N McPherson Church Road. There will be a pre-ride registration and welcome party. Baker American Cycles is our sponsor for the pre-ride event. Everyone is invited to attend. This is our 11th year for the Hogs and Rags event, which was started by Mr. Gardner Altman in 2005 and has gotten better each year. Over the past 10 years, the event has raised about $155,000, which has been distributed to various organizations. There is a $50 per person registration fee, which will get you donuts and coffee at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, two tasty meals, a Hogs and Rags t-shirt and a great ride covering two states. The event will conclude at 3 PM to allow

you time to get back to Fayetteville and enjoy the Dog Wood Festival. This year proceeds go to; Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation, it is a great publication that provides a clever paper to Teachers and Students from kindergarten to the sixth grade. Not only does the Kidsville News do a wonderful job helping parents, teachers, and children with education and reading abilities, but they are also very involved with the kids and they work hard to bring the best out of each student here. Please check them out at www.kidsvillenews.com or you can pick up their publications at various locations around town. Fort Bragg is the home of Special Forces, the “Green Berets”. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy authorized a small unconventional unit to wear the Green Beret because he believed their mission deserved special recognition. In 1962, President Kennedy called the Green Beret “a symbol of excellence, a badge of courage, a mark of distinction in the fight for freedom”. The Green Beret Foundation provides resources to facilitate the needs of injured Special Forces Soldiers and their families. They provide support to the Special Forces community in order to help the soldiers and their families, and uphold the Green Beret traditions and values when they need assistance. By: Caroline This is one of Smokin’ Harley-Davidson’s favorite events to sponsor and with good reason. The proceeds go to help support families whose children are going through treatment at Brenner Children’s Hospital. Cancer kills more children in America than any other disease and the impact on families can be quite devastating financially and emotionally. Not only will these funds help towards events for the kids such as ice cream/movie nights and provide toys or clothing, but it will assist their families with household and medical bills. These are just a few of the many things this organization does for these kids and their families. As for the Chili Cook-off, well, if you were not there, you missed out on some of the best chili recipes in this area of the state. These folks who entered, and there were a lot, are serious about their own unique chili and competition was fierce. One of the best parts of this Chili Cook-off is the variation of ingredients. Almost every kind of meat and seasoning was used, as well as some vegetarian varieties. Without a doubt, there was something there for everyone. After everyone had a chance to sample all the entries, General Manager, Ray Perry announced the winners. Adam Cochran was awarded a plaque for the most money raised, $556! Jeremy Hinston won the people’s choice winner for “It’s Not Your Grandma’s Chili”. $25 went to third place winner, Jake and Casey. $50 went to second place winner, Ann Matthews. $100 went to first place winner, Cassandra Taylor. The Carolina Marine Riders Raffle By: Mark Infield On Saturday, March 12th, I was out and about on my motorcycle and on the way home I just happened in to Double D Burn Out Saloon in Kernersville, NC. It was on the way home and …. Once inside, I ran into several people that I knew and, as is customary, we shared a cold beer or two. I noticed a Yeti Tundra 45 cooler and 10 bottles of liquor sitting on a table. I had to go check it out. It was a raffle to support the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots campaign and other worthwhile charities. Yes, I bought a ticket. How could I resist? The drawing was going to be held in about 30 minutes. The Carolina Marine Riders were also raffling off a set of cool corn hole boards. I guess it was sort of a second prize, but Lora Foster was pleased to take them home with her. Laurie Russell won the Yeti and all of the libations. Bruce Rutherford won the 50/50 and there were other door prizes given away. On July 4th, The Carolina Marine Riders are going to raffle

The Love Run

By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, March 5th was declared the day to ride to support Deputy Dave Dempsey, who was shot in the head during a robbery attempt. Thankfully, Deputy Dempsey survived this horrible attack. There was an organized 13-mile ride from Greenville County Square to the Travelers Rest Police Department where Deputy Dempsey greeted the 300-plus motorcyclists and a dozen cages. The weather was a little cool, but with everyone’s warm hearts the ride was a success. This just goes to show how our biker community supports our law enforcement deputies in Upstate South Carolina.

6th Annual Chatham County Polar Bear Run By: Mike Mohan A beautiful Carolina blue sky greeted us on a brisk February 27th as 19 riders met at Hwy 55 Burgers in Pittsboro, NC for the 6th Annual Chatham County Polar Bear Run The group made their way to the Goldston Veteran Memorial on the grounds of the Goldston Public Library to remember those made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. From there we rode to Bear Creek Brews for a sampling of the tasty products from this nano brewery. Returning to Hwy 55 Burgers for an excellent lunch rounded out a terrific ride celebrating our heroes and small businesses that make this country great. I would like to extend my gratitude to the friends and members of Chatham, Raleigh, and Triad CBA chapters for participating and raising $300 for the Fisher House at Ft.

22nd Annual Burlington H.O.G. Chapter Hospice Bike Show

By: Scott Wicker Slightly warmer temperatures and no ice and snow brought out a huge turn out for the 22nd Annual Burlington H.O.G. Chapter Hospice Bike Show. The Show, as usual, was held inside the Holly Hill Mall in Burlington on Saturday, February 27th and Sunday, February 28th. 101 entries represented 38 classes and categories to raise over $27,000 for Hospice of Alamance and Caswell Counties. This year’s total was the best ever in the show’s history. Throughout the show’s history, it has raised over $300,000 in contributions. Donations were also raised through sales of 50/50 tickets. $625 Raised on Saturday and $891 Raised on Sunday. And the Ladies of Harley Bake Sale raised over $400 during the event. too. A gaming table, donated by Down Home Harley-Davidson, was auctioned off and raised $175. The fine folks from Pro Connection Cycles donated profits from t-shirt sales and brought in $125. Many participants actual rode their motorcycles to get to the show due to the warmer weather. Each bike had a milk jug tied to the front wheel so spectators could make contributions by putting money in the jug of their favorite bike. As in years past, everyone was allowed to raise contributions prior to the event. Trophies were also awarded to those who raised the most in each class and to those who raised the 2nd and 3rd highest amounts. A panel of judges making it two shows in one also judged all the bikes separately. The Full Dresser Class raised nearly $4,300, the most money as a class. The Full Dressers and the Sport Touring Classes tied with the most entries with 12 entries in those two classes. The Vintage Class had an impressive 10 entries, their most ever. As in years past, the support was overwhelming. The winners and top finishers in each class are as follows. JUDGED: BUELL: 1st - Rodney Robbins, 2nd Place -Robby Robbins. Benefit For Jimmy Hunt By: Rose and Lloyd If you have ever ridden in any of charity rides in the Triad area, I am sure you saw and possibility met our friend and brother, Jimmy Hunt. He is always there to help with almost every cause, with a big smile and hugs for everyone. Even though Jimmy was diagnosed with cancer and is going through a battle, he still has that smile and a positive attitude. Once again David And Missi Thompson, owners of Double D Burnout Saloon, opened their hearts and establishment to provide a benefit for Jimmy. The benefit was February 27th and given by Jimmy Street with help from Jennifer McKaughan. They had two weeks to prepare, the word got out, and Double D was packed inside and out. Jimmy Street smoked some great barbecue, and tons of other dishes were brought in. Huckleberry Shyne, Carrie Smithy, and others provided some great local entertainment. There were raffles, auctions, and a 50/50. The 50/50 was won by Tim Gulledge, who gave it all back. It was amazing and heart warming to see the love for a biker and friend in need. Thanks to all that participated, the bartenders, the people that

brought food, and a big thanks to all the bikers and friends that came out to support a brother we all love.

Another classmate had been riding since 2010. He had just graduated from a 750 cc bike to a new Victory. How do you spell good-looking bike? Another classmate was a retired motor policeman from New York. He had a brand new Indian. Then there was me. I have been riding since a rear view mirror was a paid for accessory. I rode 110 miles to get to the Concord Police Department. This day was fun, interesting and definitely worthwhile. I asked Officer Clark if a student could bring a passenger to the class. He said yes. Everything that we learned would benefit a passenger. Many bikers hardly ever ride solo. If you are a perennial passenger, encourage your husband to attend this class. Go with him. Do not wait until a guardrail is coming at you at fifty miles per hour, to start learning about safety. Go take this FREE North Carolina Department of Transportation Bike Safe class. If your wife has recently started riding her own bike, you go and take her with you. You will both benefit. By: Ron Climer If you have not attended the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s FREE safety program, Bike Safe, you are missing a fabulous opportunity to learn from worldclass experts on how to ride your motorcycle more safely. Your first question probably is, “Did you say free?” IT IS FREE. I attended the free Bike Safe class at the Concord Police Department with Motorcycle Officer Clark and Motorcycle Officer Rodriquez. Both of these guys ride their own bikes when they are not riding their police issue Yamaha. Their enthusiasm for biking reflected in the whole class. Their knowledge of motorcycle safety was evident. You may be concerned that a motorcycle safety program is boring. There was not one boring minute from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. We started with an hour-long classroom session in the morning. Then we went out and rode. The officers observed each of us and gave us a very helpful, intense critique of some areas that could use improvement. We had lunch at Brooklyn Pizzeria. If you want to know where the good food is, go where the cops go. After lunch, we went back to the classroom for another short hour. Then we rode for another fifty miles. We rode on back roads. We rode on the interstate. We rode on bad roads. We rode in heavy traffic. We rode through crazy intersections. You may wonder who takes this class. I took it. I benefited very, very much. I also had fun. One of my classmates was a young lady that had only been riding for fifteen months. She had attended an introductory class when she bought her first bike. She told us that she was certified to ride in a parking lot. She was riding a Harley-Davidson Heritage.

Well, ride on over to Chandley’s Pub & Grub in Statesville, NC. “Wow!”, is what most folks say when they see 61 pool tables set up in 31,000 square feet. The facility can serve more than 900 people. “We have 61 tables, 53 of them are Diamond Pool Tables. Diamond Tables are the top of the line, best for tournament play. That’s the most Diamonds in one pool room in the world,” said Mike Chandley, owner. Chandley’s is much more than just a poolroom. “We’re pretty much a large event center and can do a lot of things. Besides pool tournaments, we host corn hole tournaments, have bands, car shows, and bike nights. There are rooms for meetings and parties,” Mike said With the Pub & Grub name comes a bar and restaurant. Chandley’s has a full-service bar stretching a hundred linear feet. There are drink specials many days. The every day Fireball special is one shot for $3, double shot $4, or two shots for $5. that and opened the country’s biggest poolroom in Statesville. Chandley’s Pub & Grub has been open for eight months. There’s always something going on at Chandley’s. Pool tournaments are held three or four nights a week. At least twice a month they have huge tournaments that draw people from several states. Some of the best players in the world shoot pool at Chandley’s. They host cornhole tournaments on Wednesday nights. Once a month or so, they do a huge regional cornhole tournament. The bar and restaurant area may close at 2 am, but the poolroom is open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday nights. Veterans and seniors 55 and older get half off pool time all the time, every day, every hour. Thursdays and Fridays are Bike Night at Chandley’s. Thursday’s special deal is $2 beer and 25% off pizza. “The first and third Sunday of each month we have a Cruise In,” Mike said. “Anything with wheels is welcome. We have a live band, too. Our house band Midnight Airwave plays outside during the events.” “We can work with groups and charities to put on events or fund raisers. We welcome anybody to bring their events to Chandley’s. You can set up your own pool or cornhole tournaments here.” Chandley’s Pub & Grub is easily accessible and within an hour or so of Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, Hickory, and lots of y’all. Nazareth Children’s Home Ride By: Darby Dillard Saturday, February 27, was a great day for riding considering the time of year. We were blessed with temps in mid fifties and a clear sky. It was absolutely beautiful and the participation was awesome! One of the reasons for the good turnout was due to the participation of the Speedway HD H.O.G. Chapter. Thank you for getting in touch with me, George Powell, plus some of the members who had been before, for coming back and the first timers. New visitors are what we strive for. And of course our regulars are Godsends. This event wouldn’t happen without them. One thing I’d like to mention, while the participation was great, Nazareth has been going through some management changes. They’re now officially “Nazareth Child and Family Connection”. Due to the timing of our party there was some confusion at the home and the resident participation was actually about half the normal, which was disappointing due to our good turnout. CMA Annual Day Of Prayer By: Wally Wersching The Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA) held their annual “Day of Prayer” throughout the country on March 6th this year. Groups of Christian bikers got together to pray for everything they deemed requiring help. Locally, there was a group that met at the Cherokee County Veterans Appreciation Park in Gaffney, SC next to the Gaffney Military Museum at about 2:00PM. The park, which was dedicated in 2010, has a beautiful display of monoliths with names of veterans along with little areas on each side for reflection. There is a great bronze sculpture of the iconic depiction for the lost soldier with the helmet on the weapon next to the boots of the soldier. Just looking at that sculpture brings back memories of wars fought, and soldiers lost. Riders for this event came from both North and South Carolina. I had met many of them before at “Bike Blessings”, and other biker events. They might not all have been CMA members, but most belonged to a Christian Biker Ministry of some kind. Many churches have a group who ride motorcycles together. Some have identifying colors on the backs of their vests, but some are just friends. Sunday’s weather was the best of the week with temps in the upper 50’s, and a bright Carolina blue sky. I arrived at the museum early, and waited for the rest of the people to arrive. While I waited, I talked with a young lady who drove to the event. She told me about her father who rode Harleys for the military during WWII, and how she and her father went to Atlanta, and visited with Willie G. Davidson while touring the Harley-Davidson museum. She was very proud of her father (and rightfully so), and had many nice things to say about the patriotic Harley-Davidson Motor Company, and its employees.

At a few minutes later, a small group of bikers from Shelby pulled in and parked along the back wall by the pool building. I knew a couple of them but they all seemed glad to see me. A few minutes later, a larger group pulled in and parked. I recognized a few friends and shared a few of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines with them. It’s always good to see old friends after the long winter break. As I was standing there taking pictures, “Poppy”, the owner of the Carolina’s Chicken and More, came up, and we talked for a few minutes. He thanked me for the write up of the breakfast fundraiser they had in February. Then, I noticed that “Mongoose” was there. He parked his Gilroy Indian next to a new Indian Chieftain. I hadn’t seen “Mongoose” for a long time. I really enjoy talking with him. After everybody got acquainted, a spokesman talked about how they will all get in a circle on the Veterans Monument to pray. Everybody held hands, and each person in turn said a prayer for something special to them. They want to increase the group size every year. Next year, mark your calendars for the first Sunday in March. We’ll meet again at the Cherokee County Veterans Appreciation Park about 2:00PM. I hope to see you there! The wintery season shed its skin as the weather cooperated for the Capital City Bike Nights kickoff event on March 1st at the new My Way Tavern at 522 St. Marys Street in Raleigh. Riders came from all over and as far as Fayetteville to experience the good times, good music, and great food that My Way Tavern had to offer. The Ray Price crew was there to mingle with the riders and talk shop about their latest custom creations that were on hand including a custom 2005 Road King that they turned in to a Big Wheel Bagger and a 2016 Sportster Iron 883 they customized to look like a classic FXR with stunning paint for the Harley-Davidson Custom Kings contest. The atmosphere was energetic with live music outside from the Windsor Oaks Band. Bikes were parked on the entire block and around the restaurant. People hung out and swapped stories as they enjoyed their favorite beverage and some really good food. “The downtown Raleigh setting provides the

Forgotten Sons MC Swap Meet By: Caroline The Forgotten Sons MC began their fund raising efforts this year on Saturday, March 5th at their facility in Winston-Salem. Fortunately, we had break in the cold weather so there were plenty of folks that came out to see what could be bought or traded. There were a good variety of items –clothing, tools, bike parts, and riding gear. You could also buy fresh grilled food and drink—all for a great cause. I spoke to President, Travis McCune, who told me that this event is to raise funds for one of their favorite organizations, Purple Heart Homes (www.PurpleHeartHomesUSA.org). He also said this was by no means, the only thing they have planned for the year. The swap meet funds will be combined with those from their poker run on April 16th, and also donated to Purple Heart Homes. The Forgotten Sons will also have their big anniversary celebration in July. They hope that if you want to be a part of this effort to help them help our Veterans, you will come out and join them.

By: Wally Wersching Greenville, SC is the home of a very interesting little museum. Its official title is The South Carolina Museum and Library of Confederate History. It is operated by the 16th Regiment of S.C. Volunteers, Camp 36, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. They are open every day in the week except Tuesday and Thursday. I decided to go for a visit. The Confederate Museum is located Boyce Avenue just off of I-385. When I walked into the museum, I met one of the volunteers. We talked for a while, and I took some pictures without using the flash because the intense light can damage the artifacts. While I was walking around, he showed me one of the exhibits in the museum. It was a glass tear catcher. A full tear catcher showed that the woman really missed or mourned her husband. Some ladies sprinkled the tears over their husband’s grave. I never even heard about a tear catcher before, much less seen one. It was very fine glassware. We talked about the many different flags of the Confederate States of America. The “Stars and Bars” was the first flag flown in 1861. With a circle of white stars on a blue background in the upper left corner with red and white stripes, it looked a lot like the Union’s flag. It was confusing so it was replaced in 1863 by the second flag called the “Stainless Banner” because it was a predominantly white flag. In the upper left corner of the flag was the crossed blue bars with white stars on a red background. There was confusion with that flag, too. On a calm day, the flag was thought to be the white flag of truce or surrender. In 1865, it was replaced with the “Blood-dipped Banner”. It was similar to the “Stainless Banner” with a wide red stripe on the end. The most recognizable flag today is The Battle Flag, often erroneously called

The Confederate Flag. The Confederate generals agreed on a square flag instead of the usual rectangular shape. The first set of new battle flags were formally received by the Army of Northern Virginia in 1861. Sometimes called St. Andrews Cross, Beauregard’s Flag, The Southern Cross (which actually refers to the rectangular Confederate Navy Jack), or the Virginia Battle Flag, it is properly called The Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. Later, we walked outside to see the new cannon in front of the museum. The old cannon was replaced last November with the new 1857 12-pound Napoleon Cannon. The carriage of the new one is all steel, and very heavy. The old one had a wooden carriage that took a lot of maintenance to preserve. Every time I visit the museum, I learn more about the battle between the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America – sometimes mistakenly called the United States Civil War. It’s surprising how the actual historic events differ with the ones portrayed in the movies, on TV, and by the special interest groups. Stop by, and learn the real story. The museum has many wonderful artifacts, and is a very worthwhile trip whenever you’re in Greenville, SC. Customer Appreciation Day At STE Powersports By: Gary Steelman March 5th Customer Appreciation Day at STE Powersports was a great success, with beautiful weather good music and food from Eric Wilson of Wilson’s Dogs. There were a few vendors set up selling everything from leather jackets and helmets to hotdogs. STE Powersports has a large selection of bikes, Harley baggers and customs, and some nice Yamaha and Honda trade in bikes as well. The guys and gals from STE Powersports hosted test rides of their bikes. Bikes were coming in and going out on test rides all day. Lots of young men were trying out the Harleys. The silver sportster was a favorite ride of a few guys. One rider was trying to test it out and the new owner was trying to get him off the bike. The test rider said he couldn’t get off the bike just yet, when asked why, he said “She’s given me a chubby.” Funny guy, but he did walk away kind of funny. The bikes here are easy to fall in love with, there are so many to choose from and sooo easy to take home. Willie Parlier played guitar and sang the hits most all day long, fitting music for the day. Then he drew for the door prizes, gift cards to area businesses and bike shops. Representatives from the Josh Pardue Memorial Birthday Bash and Poker Run were present selling raffle tickets on the 100th Anniversary Sportster to be given away April 30th. Tickets are $20 and are available from STE Powersports until the drawing. The folks kept coming in and going out most of the day, buying tickets, jackets and getting quotes on “Air Ride”

2016 Burlington L.O.H. Chili Cook Off

By: Scott Wicker As in years past, an enthusiastic crowd looking to get great chili at Down Home HarleyDavidson came out on Saturday, March 5th to show support for the Burlington Ladies of Harley Annual Chili Cook Off. As in previous years, each of the members participating served an ample portion of chili to those in attendance that made a donation to benefit the Burlington Ladies of Harley. Also, baked goods were also sold making this very popular event successful as usual. Several varieties of chili were served giving a variety of different flavors to this year’s event. All of the contestants served up some great chili making it difficult to pick who’s was the best. When all was said and done and all the votes were counted, Myra Crawford was named the 2016 Burlington L.O.H. Chili Bean “Queen”. This was the fourth year in a row that she has won. Myra also received a beautiful trophy and a $50 cash prize for her winning recipe. Myra will also represent the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter at the 30th Annual Bike Show and Chili Cook-Off to be held at Rommel Harley-Davidson in Durham, NC on Saturday, March 19th where several of the State’s H.O.G. Chapters will bring their best entrants to com-

pete for H.O.G. Club bragging rights! Legends Rise at SCBHOF 2016

By: Everette “EZ” Short It’s not often that you get to stand in the presence of legends, but on Saturday, February 27th, The South Carolina Biker Hall Of Fame inducted 5 new, and honestly deserved, members into their ranks of legendary heroes. We started the night off, at the world famous Suck Bang Blow, with Bill Barber, who is a legend in his own right, on stage with five previous members of the SC Bikers Hall Of Fame, to introduce their newest member, Pastor Joe Covino. Joe has ministered to us for years from the Rugged Cross Riders, Prison Outreach, and more, to accept this award and the schawg that goes with it. Next, it was time to honor Mr. Mike Lewis from Surfside, SC, who is a maniac motorcycle personality with a quiet demeanor, as well as a custom bike builder, a retired Fire Captain, and a Master Mason. And then came time to hear from the awesome Mr. Bill Furr from Orangeburg SC, who has accomplishments that deserve an article all his own, including 16 time World Champion of Drag Racing, first man to make a pass on a drag strip at over 200 mph and so much more. Amazingly, he was so humble for

such a great man of accolades. In between all this greatness, Joe Santana’s Kingfish, who rock with such epic proportions that no one ever walks away with anything other than a call for, “MORE MORE MORE!” filled the house with soul and rocking good times. I mean it, if you get a chance to see them, it’s worth it. Did I mention that admission to this legendary festival of greatness was free? After the hoopla of a musical intervention, came the quietly intense insanity of Mr. Greg “Edge” Schuer, from The Horse Magazine and the founder of The Smokeout Rally. I have to say that the humility of this great man is amazing. If you ONLY go to one event this year, as a trained professional, I recommend you attend The Smokeout. I love this guy and what he has done. Finally, to end the night with a fireworks big bang, hell yes hallipoloza, and bring down the house ovation, was Mrs. Patty Nuth from Surfside Beach. Patty is the first woman ever inducted into the Hall of Fame and let me tell you that she deserves it. She has been behind the Myrtle Beach phenomena and women riders since the beginning. You know, back when it was fun? She is one hell of a woman and her husband David needs a mention for a minute too, as they both run Patty’s Dew Drop Inn at the edge of Myrtle Beach to this day. The applause and crowd reaction was amazing and well founded for this outstanding, beautiful woman. In the end, everyone is a legend, but some people deserve the applause and attention. These five fine legends deserved to be honored, one and all. We all had a great time, but, somehow, I don’t remember how I got home and I am so sorry about the mailbox. If you see me in an event with a shiny black thing in my hand, IT IS A CAMERA. Get in front of it and don’t ask me why you didn’t get in the pictures. By: Kelsey Hellwarth Harley-Davidson Motor Company recognizes that individuality is not just a word, it’s a lifestyle. Riders each have their own personality and want their bikes to reflect that uniqueness. Harley-Davidson Motor Company had this in mind last summer when they created the Custom Kings Customization Contest whereby dealerships around the world were challenged “to build the ultimate customized H-D Street® motorcycle.” Last year’s custom entries were so creative that Harley-Davidson Motor Company decided to issue the challenge again, only this time a Sportster® was the model of choice. When the word got out, Harley-Davidson of Greensboro could not pass up the opportunity to rise to the occasion and put their customization skills to work. Harley-Davidson of Greensboro chose four members to be part of their build team: Mark Wheelihan, James Onorio, Jr., David “Greezy” Garrison, and Josh Roberts. Once the build team was formed, these masterminds collaborated and chose to reconstruct a 2016 SeventyTwo® Sportster®. The Seventy-Two® offered the ideal foundation to bring their ideas to life. The 1200cc engine allowed for more weight to accommodate the sidecar and the large spoke wheel was, well, it was just badass. They put in a 2-inch under springer front-end and a small single caliber front break setup. The team paid homage to the board track racers by adding the speedster bars to give it that racing feel. The exhaust was a 2-in-1 setup with an upswept trumpet muffler. This setup was used for older bikes before fuel injections so the team had to make modifications so that it would be compatible with the

new EFI systems. The team enlisted the help of Larry “Ozzy” Osborne to craft a drop spindle that would lower the sidecar about a foot and a half. The build team partnered with Chris Collins and the guys at High Point Body & Paint, Wayne Eldridge, and Joe Harris and the boys over at Tar Heel Powder Coatings to black out the bike and finish it off with show-stopping custom paint. On February 25th, Harley-Davidson of Greensboro unveiled their custom bike, dubbed the “Designated Driver,” at Mac’s Speed Shop in Greensboro. The “Designated Driver” drew quite a crowd and was well received by all of those in attendance. The next day, Harley-Davidson Motor Company announced that the “Designated Driver” was one of the Top 64 qualifying entries that would move on to participate in the Custom Kings Consumer Voting Competition. In this competition, consumers voted for their favorite custom Sportsters® motorcycle in head-to-head match ups during each round. The contest consisted of 6 rounds before choosing this year’s U.S. Custom Kings champion. Harley-Davidson of Greensboro made it to the second round of voting as one of the Top 32 in the country. He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be okay. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch and jumping at every sound. Finally midnight arrived; he breathed a sigh of relief and went home. When he got home his wife said, “I’ve never seen you work so late. What’s the matter?” He said, “I don’t want to talk about it, I’ve just spent the worst day of my life.” She said, “You think you had a bad day, you’ll never believe what happened to me. This morning my golf pro dropped dead in the middle of my lesson!”

They sold her the cat food. The next day, she tried to buy two cans of dog food. Again, the cashier said, “I’m sorry, but we cannot sell you dog food without proof that you have a dog. An old blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar stool and orders a shot of Jack Daniels. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things: 1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat, 2. The bouncer is a blonde girl with a ‘Billy-Club’, 3. I’m a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate, 4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter, 5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler. Now, think it seriously, Cowboy, do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?” The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, “No, not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times!” Three sisters age 92, 94 and 96 live in a house together. One night the 96 year old draws a bath, puts her foot in and pauses. She yells down the stairs, “Was I getting in or out of the bath?” The 94-year-old yells back, “I don’t know, I’ll come up and see.” She starts up the stairs and pauses. Then she yells, “Was I going up the stairs or coming down?” The 92-yearold was sitting at the kitchen table having tea listening to her sisters. She then yells, “I’ll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who’s at the door.” There’s a fellow who is an avid rider. Actually he’s a motorcycle fanatic. He has not missed a weekend of motorcycle riding in years. Every Saturday and Sunday morning he gets up very early and goes meets his buddies for a nice long ride. On this one morning, he gets up early, dresses quietly, gets his riding gear out of the closet, and goes out to the garage to prepare to leave. While out there it started raining a torrential downpour. There was snow mixed

Charley, a new retiree-greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn’t seem to get to work on time. Every day he was 5, 10, 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, clean-shaven, sharp-minded and a real credit to the company and obviously demonstrating their “Older Person Friendly” policies. What did they say to you there if you showed up in the morning late so often?” The old man looked down at the floor, then smiled. He chuckled quietly, then said with a grin, “They usually saluted and said, Good morning, Admiral, can I get your coffee, sir?” A husband walks into Victoria’s Secret to purchase a sheer negligee for his wife. He is shown several possibilities that range from $250 to $500 in price – the sheerer, the higher the price. Naturally, he opts for the sheerest item, pays the $500, and takes it home. He presents it to his wife and asks her to go upstairs, put it on and model it for him. Upstairs the wife thinks, (she’s no dummy), ‘I have and idea. It’s so sheer that it might as well be nothing. I won’t put it on, but I’ll do the modeling naked, return it tomorrow, and keep the $500 refund for myself.’ She appears naked on the balcony and strikes a pose. The husband says, “Good grief! You’d think for $500, they’d at least iron it!” He never heard the shot. Funeral on Thursday at noon.

Remembering

By: Wally Wershing It was the Fourth of July 1975. At that time, I was 7 years old. I was with my dad as I had been every year since I could remember watching the floats go by in the Wadesboro, NC annual Independence Day parade. It was all very exciting. The local high school bands were playing, and people were cheering when the men and women in uniform went by. I was cheering loudly when suddenly my dad shushed me. I looked toward the street, and there were three old cars with American flags draped over them. Everyone became silent as they went by. After they passed, I asked dad what that was about, and he explained that the car’s owners had died in the Viet Nam war, and were considered the town’s war heroes. As I got older, I noticed the cars were in the parade every year. I also noticed that they were looking a little more shabby, and running rougher every year. One year, there were only two cars in the parade. I asked about the third car, and was told it wouldn’t start. Running them only once or twice a year was hard on the old cars. During the summer between my freshman and sophomore years in high school, only one of the cars could be driven in the annual parade. However, it overheated, and broke down right where I happened to be standing. A group of us pushed it the rest of the way. It was really sad to see those memorials of our local war

heroes in such poor condition. When school started, we talked to our auto shop teacher about possibly working on the cars to at least keep them running. He was so excited that we would consider doing that. He discussed it with the principal, and we got permission to completely restore one car each year for the next three years. Any financial problems were to be taken care of by local donations. All the towns-people knew and loved our local war heroes, and wanted to help keep their memory alive. The first car we worked on was a 1962 Pontiac Catalina that was owned by Chip Hamrick. It was in rough shape. The high performance 421 cubic inch engine was clogged with carbon and sludge, and the cooling system was full of rust. It couldn’t run. The body had a little rust showing through its dull black paint, and a nest of squirrels had been living in the back seat. They got in through the holes in the floor. There was a great debate as to whether to restore the Catalina to factory original condition, or to the way Chip had modified it. Chip’s way won out. We wanted to keep the car the way he had it before he went in the Army. It took the auto shop class the entire school year to get it back the way it had been. We spent many nights and weekends scavenging through local junkyards for the needed parts. When the owners of the yards heard what we were doing, they donated the parts we needed. This was, after all, a community undertaking. We were all proud when the Catalina was in the next annual parade looking and running like a brand new car. The following year we worked on Stan Hamrick’s red 1964 Pontiac GTO. It was in worse condition than Chip’s Catalina. These cars were setup to go fast back in 1967 when the boys left. Starting them once in awhile and driving them only in the annual parade was doing more harm than good. As we began working a Stan’s GTO, we didn’t forget about Chip’s Catalina. Per a scheduled routine, one of the auto shop students would go to the shed where it was stored, uncover it, and take it out for a spin. Chip’s parents were always teary eyed when the car pulled away – remembering when Chip used to drive it. After a half-hour or so, it would go back into the shed under the cover. It was a running Catalina again! Chip had made all the right modifications to make it go fast, and we had done what we could to bring it back to life. We finished Stan’s GTO the last day of the class year. It looked and ran great. We were all proud of our accomplishments when both cars drove in the annual parade. Now all that was left was Doug Standridge’s Mustang. All summer we talked about Doug’s Mustang. We knew that it was the most challenging because it had been stored outside for all those years. Our concerns were justified when on the first day of new school year; Doug’s Mustang had to be towed into the auto shop. It was a total junk heap, but we were determined. It would have been much easier to just buy another Mustang, but that wouldn’t have been Doug’s Mustang.

We had to replace most of the body panels with ones donated by our local Ford dealer. Luckily, the frame wasn’t too rusty. Sometimes when the frame rusts, the car is junk no matter how badly you want to save it. This was going to be a challenge but we were determined to get all three cars restored. By this time, I was a senior. For my history project, I decided to write about the three cousins, Chip, Stan, and Doug, who had gone off to war, but didn’t come home. There were a lot of stories (some bordered on legends) about the three boys, but I was going to dig to get the facts, and write the best paper I could. I was thinking about a career in journalism at that time. The cousins had all been born within six months of each other back in 1949. From everyone’s earliest recollection of them, they were little troublemakers - nothing really bad but

definitely mischievous. They were inseparable. When you saw one, the other two were close by. They were always in trouble with their teachers but always managed to get good grades. In high school, the boys were all into sports, and in their junior year led their football team to a division championship. Chip was an outstanding lineman. At 6’2” and 250 pounds, he was a force to be reckoned with. Stan was the quick-thinking quarterback. At 6’3” and 200 pounds with a strong accurate arm, he was a born leader. Doug was a sure-handed wide receiver. He was fast and wiry at 6’ 1” and 175. When they turned sixteen, they got their driver’s licenses, and were never the same again. They each got a car, and a love affair was in the making. They were always working on their cars, or doing odd jobs to get money to spend on them to make them go faster. There was no time for girls. Almost every weekend, the local sheriff would bring them home in his squad car. The sheriff would confiscate their cars when he caught Continued On Page 66

them racing on the back roads, but he’d only keep them for a few days, and then the trio had their wheels back again. Chip was the first to get drafted in 1968 when he turned nineteen. Everybody knew that if one was drafted the other two would enlist. And that they did. They joined under the “buddy plan” so they would be together all during their tour of duty. They went to boot camp, then Fort Hood, Texas for more training, and finally to Viet Nam. On June 19, 1969, their platoon was overrun by Viet Cong, and they were never seen again. The telegrams that were sent to their parents simply stated that they were “missing in action – presumed dead”. Our whole county turned out for their memorial service. It was all very sad. Our local newspaper (The Wadesboro Gazette) had their pictures on the front page in honor of the “Local War Heroes”. This was unusual at a time when fighting in Viet Nam was looked down upon by many Americans. I received an “A” for my paper on the trio of cousins. After I graduated, I went on to the local community college. The three cars were always in our annual parade, and were kept in perfect running condition by the current auto shop students. I hadn’t thought about the three cousins for quite some time when I heard an astounding story. Stan Hamrick was still alive! He had been freed from a POW camp when the U.S. State Department negotiated with the current Viet Nam government. In all, there were twenty-seven POWs released after almost twenty years of captivity. On January 7, 1987 Stan was

admitted to the VA hospital in Washington, DC. My job at that time was reporter for the Wadesboro Gazette. I convinced my boss that I should drive up to DC to interview Stan. He agreed, and the next day I was on my way. While doing my research on the trio, I had seen many pictures of Stan. He was very handsome, trim with a good physique. When I saw him in the hospital, I could barely recognize him. He was just a skeleton with skin on it. He was in real bad condition. I introduced myself, and he flashed me a toothless smile. After asking about his parents, he then asked about was his car – his GTO! I told him that it had been restored, and was waiting for him. I also told him that he and his two cousins were looked upon as local war heroes. He said that they were not heroes, but just guys doing their job for their country. He then told me about his capture, and subsequent imprisonment. All three were captured. Doug had been wounded, and died during the first year. It was the saddest day of Stan’s life. He told me that it was like a part of him died that day. He and Chip were determined to survive. After the long days of hard labor, they would talk about the times before they enlisted, and how they would work on and race their cars. That was the only thing that kept them going all those years – the thought of getting back, and driving their cars again. He went on to describe how (after 15 years of captivity) Chip got sick. He was in so much pain that when he did eventually die, it was a relief. Stan was almost glad that Chip died. He was in a better place! He then told me that the last two years were the worst. His cousin Chip wasn’t there to talk to about their cars and it made the nights very, very long. I knew that Stan could not drive his car until he recovered but he still wanted to talk about it. I told him about how it was restored by our high school auto shop students. I also told him that it looks and runs just the way he had left it. Not surprisingly, he was eager to get home and drive his much-loved GTO. But right now his body and mind needed to heal. Stan returned home on May 15th to a real “Hometown Heroes” welcome. Everyone cheered that he had been transferred to our local hospital. He couldn’t believe all the cards, letters, and flowers he received. He was just overwhelmed by it all. When the day finally came when the doctors said he could go out for a few hours. He called me and asked if he could come, and get him in his GTO. “Sure”, I said. Then I went to get the GTO. When I drove up, and he saw the car for the first time though the window of his hospital room he literally broke down and cried like a baby. While we drove around town, everyone stopped us so they could shake his hand, and wish him well. It was a very emotional experience for us all. Our annual Independence Day parade was the next big event in town. The cars were cleaned, polished and ready to go. Stan really wanted to drive his GTO in the parade so with a little coaxing from Stan’s friends and family, the doctors finally gave him the OK. I thought that Stan would jump out of his skin – he was so excited.

Usually when the three cars passed there was a solemn silence so all could remember our fallen trio. This year that all changed. When the three cars passed by, there was a standing ovation, and loud cheers that even drowned out the high school band. It was all so very moving. Our whole county and some of the surrounding counties were there to honor Stan. Now it’s 2003, and the tradition keeps going. The current auto shop students keep Chip’s Catalina and Doug’s Mustang in perfect running condition for our annual parade. After years of physical therapy and counseling, Stan managed to get on with his life. He married a local girl, and sells insurance. Every once in a while, when one of the students takes Chip’s or Doug’s car out for a drive on the back roads outside of Wadesboro, Stan will tag along with his GTO. There is some friendly hot-dogging, spinning tires, and mild racing, but nothing like the days when he and his cousins were young. But that’s OK. He feels that the spirits of Chip and Doug are still alive in the cars they loved so much.

Ray Price Butt Pickin’ Contest

By: Kris Weiss The first ever Ray Price Butt Pickin’ Contest was a huge success! When people in the south hear that there’s a Butt Pickin’ Contest they know that it can only mean one thing; there’s going to be a large crowd for a Boston Butt Cook-Off. Ray Price Harley-Davidson dared to switch things up with this event. Having hosted Whole Hog BBQ, Brunswick Stew, and Buffalo Wing competitions for about a decade, they wanted to change things up a bit. With the help of their friend Jerry Hart A.K.A Ole Timer, President of the BBQ Brothers, owner of Ole Time Barbecue and the biggest advocate and fundraiser for The Ride for Kids, they went “off menu” with this cook-off and had one of the largest participants of cookers and attendance in dealership history. With 13 teams, cooking eight Boston Butts each, there was plenty to go around for the large crowd that paid $5 a piece to sample and eat all they wanted. The entire donation, totaling over $3000, went directly to the Ride For Kids/Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. And add $500 to that total thanks to the winning team, The Enforcers, for donating their First Place winnings back to the charity. Jerry Hart was nearly speechless as he thanked them and everyone for their generosity. Second Place and $250 went to Backdraft BBQ, Third Place and $100 went to Pirates BArrgh-B-Que and the always coveted Peoples Choice Award went to Buff’s BBQ. The weather was one of the most helpful ingredients for such a successful day as Jean Price referred to in her remarks to the crowd from the stage. She said, “If Ray were here, he would have been so happy.” Jean’s husband and the dealership’s namesake, Ray Price, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 16th, 2015. His legacy lives on as the folks at Ray Price Harley-Davidson have lots of major events scheduled throughout the year. Run For The Son Breakfast Fundraiser By: Wally Wersching On Saturday February 20th, the Jabez Riders Chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA) in Spartanburg, South Carolina held their annual “Run For The Son” fundraiser breakfast at the Carolina Chicken & More restaurant in Gaffney, South Carolina. It was held between 7:00 and 10:00AM. I arrived at the restaurant about 8:30AM, and was greeted with wide smiles and hearty handshakes. I only knew a few of the people but everyone seemed happy to see me. I placed my order for scrambled eggs, a sausage patty, a biscuit, and a sweet tea. The cost was a flat rate of $6.00 no matter what I ordered. After sitting at a table with a couple of my friends for a few minutes, my meal was delivered by a friendly member of the chapter. It was delicious!

While we ate, we talked about the CMA, and I learned what happens to the money collected. After the bill is paid for all the food that was served, 60% of the money raised goes to the CMA for distribution to their many worthwhile causes and outreach programs, and the rest stays with the local chapter. This fundraiser is the only one each year where some of the money stays with the local chapter. All other fundraising events during the year are for charities. One man started the CMA in 1975. It now has thousands of members with outreaches in more than thirty countries around the world. If you have not been to a CMA event, it’s a lot of fun. Which Helmet?

Helmet laws differ from state to state as well as opinions to those who ride. I have seen and heard both sides of the issue and still come to the conclusion of “let those who ride decide”. I know a brother who went down while wearing an actual DOT approved helmet. He did survive, but sustained brain damage. He has a long way to go in his healing, but is getting better. Even in sports they wear helmets. I know of a Godly preacher who was injured while playing softball. He, too, suffered a brain injury and is healing according to God’s timing. My point is we never know when we may need the extra protection of a helmet. The word of God tells us to put on the whole armor of God. This armor is to protect us from the enemy who is the devil. Ephesians 6:16-17 says, “take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. It is kind of a big deal when God himself says to wear a helmet. I guess we should listen. When serving the Lord we do battle an enemy. Serving God is the ride of your life. Always wear riding gear. Please pray for all brain injury victims. If you don’t know the Jesus that I’m speaking of, just ask Him into your life today. Remember when all fails, try Jesus. In “HIS” wind Popkorn

By: Bill Gallaway Mark Lane Sanders, 56, loving husband to Connie Sanders, joined his loved ones in heaven on January 24, 2016. Mark was no stranger to the biker community in the Anderson and Seneca, SC areas. Mark was born in Highland Park, Ill, and was the owner of Precision Construction, a local home construction business. Mark had been building homes since he was 18 years of age. He was a loving father to Michael Dodd and wife, Ann Crystal Babb and husband Don, Richard Sanders and wife Kristin, and Steven Crooks. He was “Papa” to eight adoring grandchildren and one beloved expected grandchild on the way; brother to Marsha Mullinax (Thomas), Morris “Bert” Sanders (Tina), Marshall “Butch” Sanders (Connie Lou), and the late Matthew Sanders (Sue). Mark was a wonderful man and friend to everyone he knew. He had countless friends who will miss him tremendously. He always had a smile on his face and loved life and riding. You were his friend if you knew him for five minutes or five years. A memorial service was held on Saturday January 30, 2016. The service was attended by many friends and relatives

By: Bill Gallaway Saturday, February 27 was the date for that month’s Gold Wing Road Rider Association of South Carolina “Plaque Attack”. This attack brought riders from all over South Carolina to Simpsonville, SC, where the Greenville Host Chapter “E” planned the event at Carolina Fine Foods. There were a total of 13 Chapters present from Anderson, Charleston, Chesterfield, Clemson, Easley, Greenwood, Lexington, Myrtle Beach, Newberry, Rock Hill, and Spartanburg. Only one chapter wasn’t represented – the Aiken Chapter “Q”. All of the Chapters represented amounted to 160 members in attendance. There were various awards given out. Easley received the Silver Award, Charleston the Bronze Award, and Newberry the Gold Award. The Plaque computation placed Charleston in 3rd, Newberry in 2nd and Rock Hill in 1st. Shown with Plaque is the Rock Hill Chapter Director Brian Kirshbaum from the CATAWBA Wings Chapter H. Congratulations to Rock Hill.
