Y
ou are holding The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine issue 181 in your hands. That is short for the 1st issue of our 16th year! Also hidden in that statement is the fact that we have printed and distributed over 3,600,000 magazines over the past 15 years! That’s 3.6 MILLION! Remember when McDonalds used to put how many hamburgers they sold on their signs? Maybe you are not that old, but I am. It also occurred to me that some of you have never known a month in your riding history without The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and that makes me proud. We are proud to be #1 in the Carolinas because you do not last this long in this business unless you are publishing a quality magazine and treating people right. Believe me, we have seen many others come and go! Now, when you come to milestones in your life, you have to celebrate and we want to include all of our advertisers and staff in the celebration because, it goes without saying, we couldn’t have done it without them. Our sales staff works with the advertisers, the advertisers buy ads, we publish and distribute the magazine, you read it and patronize the advertisers. That is the cycle of life in this business. It only works when everyone participates, so we owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of you for helping us achieve this milestone in our success. Although several advertisers have been with us a considerable length of time, Greensboro H-D is the only original remaining. We really appreciate all the advertiser’s support and especially Greensboro H-D. It is understood that all of our sales people are important to us. They are our legs. We appreciate all of them. Over the years, we have had over 300 different sales people. Of them, Grant Eagle in Concord, NC, is senior having been with us since July of 2001. Alan Dockery of Newton, NC has been with us since March of 2002, and Scott Wicker of Alamance County has represented Full Throttle since December of 2005. Wendy Rogers in Fayetteville, NC has also been with us since 2005 joining us in May of that year. There have been others that have worked with us for many years and some not so many. That is also a source of pride for us. Today, we still maintain a sales force of 40 people (I wish they would all turn in a new ad! 8^)) and countless others who contribute stories and pictures each month. We recognize all of them as contributors to our success and share the pride with them. So THANK YOU ALL, advertisers, staff, and readers 3,600,000 times. We appreciate you supporting The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for 15 years. Keep up the good work and if you think you would like to be part of our team, contact me at your earliest convenience.

The Brittany Davis Memorial Ride By: Everette “EZ” Short We all hope that somebody will remember us when we finally leave this planet. On Saturday, June 8th, the friends and family of Brittany Davis gathered to show how much they loved and remembered her at The Brittany Davis Benefit Memorial Ride and Concert. Earlier this year, Brittany passed away at the young age of 24, from heart complications. A good sized crowd showed up early to help out her mother, Wendy, with the funeral costs and to show their support, while the crowd just kept growing throughout the day. After a few hours of hugs, tears, and such, at least 52 riders left Captain Poo’s, rolling north to the first stop at 3rd Base up in Loris. Then, it was back down to Rickey’s Dockside in Little River for a good visit and some cold beers with good friends. Soon enough, it was time to mount up and ride into downtown NMB for a raid on Deckerz on Main Street. Finally, the mob headed back up to The Swingbridge Saloon for a full-on food eating frenzy that was donated by the bar’s big hearted owner, Jeff Long. Boston Butts, BBQ chicken, slaw, beans and bread were all cooked up by the wondrous Ray Ward, while free music was served to a dancing crowd by three great bands from good ole’ North Cackolacky. Cedar Branch is from Chadbourn, Nick Gore calls Wilmington home, and Pyromatic roared in from Old Dock, North Carolina. All three bands donated their time, talent, and energy. I have to give a big salute to all of these noble musicians.
Giveaway items for the 50/50 raffle were donated from all the stops consisting of shirts, hats, and gift certificates. The lucky winners of the poker run were John Russell and Lisa Carter, with the money being donated back to the benefit. In the end, $1629 was raised to help with funeral expenses, but the family is still trying to raise the rest of the money. If you would like to help, please send your donations to Peacock Funeral home c/o Brittany Davis Funeral Bill, 1227 S. Madison St., Whiteville, NC 28472. The family would like to send out a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who attended and, although Brittany wasn’t physically present, she was certainly there in spirit.

8th Annual Thunder Road Harley-Davidson Bike Show
By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, June 15th, Thunder Road Harley-Davidson (ThunderRoadHD.com) in Danville, Virginia held their 8th Annual Bike Show to Benefit the Danville Cancer Association. A parking lot full of show bikes made up 13 categories for the show. We were very impressed with the turn out in the Vintage Class. Several HarleyDavidsons with Shovelhead engines were present. That’s more Shovelheads than we have seen at most shows in a while. The show also had some very interesting customized Softails in both of their classes as well. With unpredictable weather and the threat of rain always present, the turn out and people coming to the dealership for the fun and festivities could not have been better. The Thunder Road Girls were there selling 50/50 tickets and posing for pictures with folks. Everyone really enjoyed the live music provided by Streamline. I think they only took one break all

day. Inside, the sales floor was crawling with people looking at new Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It won’t be long and the 2014 Models will be making their debut. The girls in the MotorClothes® department kept lines at the counter purchasing all the latest fashions. The Genuine MotorParts® counter guys were busy keeping up with customers’ requests and helping everyone find the right accessories for their bike. The Service Department was extremely busy getting new bikes ready for delivery, adding accessories, and keeping customers’ motorcycles in tiptop shape for the summer riding season. The show and sale of 50/50 tickets made a very generous donation to the Danville Cancer Association. It was a very fun day for everyone at the show. Leather & Lace MC - 30 Years And Going Strong! By: Susan Hurst Perseverance. Dedication. Courage. Devotion. These four words describe a woman who has been the pinnacle of a woman’s true motorcycle club. Jennifer Chaffin created Leather & Lace MC 30 years ago and today, she still reins strong as the club President. Jennifer’s hard work and dedication has gained the respect of the men’s motorcycle clubs across the country. In short, she created a women’s MC to prove to the men’s clubs that everyone can get along. Jennifer is passionate about motorcycling. In the early years, she was always stuck in the back of the men’s pack, totally ignored, and not taken seriously as a motorcyclist. After enduring years of these attitudes and feelings, she decided that it was time to create a woman’s motorcycle club that encompassed the passion she had for women’s and children’s issues, the freedom of the road, and the avenue that women motorcyclists could use enabling them to ride in the wind. Jennifer put ads in various motorcycling magazines across the United States. After a few weeks of the magazines being out in the streets, her mailbox was chocked full of letters from women from every part of the country wanting to be a part of her vision and dream. What has evolved from her 30 years of hard work is an international women’s motorcycle club that has broken barriers and attitudes that were reserved for the most hardened of attitudes and mind set. Leather & Lace MC was formed to bring all women together who share a common interest in motorcycling and in helping others. Jennifer stated, “We are a rare and unique breed, in that not only are we women, but family women. We share the wind in our face and the excitement of the thunder and power beneath us as we ride. As our name depicts, ‘Leather’ is for the inner strength as well as the physical strength we share to be able to handle our machines. ‘Lace’ is for our femininity, which is important to each of us. We believe it takes a special kind of lady to truly understand the feeling of freedom that comes with the wind in our faces. More importantly, we have the comfort knowing that God is in our spirits and by our sides as we ride and live.” Members of Leather & Lace MC are a strong, united group of passionate women that work hard in keeping Jennifer’s early vision alive and real. Raising money for not-for-profit organizations occurs on a monthly basis across the country. Every October members of Leather & Lace MC raise money for the Johns Hopkins Breast Cancer Research Foundation. There are also local fundraisers for organizations within the communities where the Leather & Lace women live and work. Leather & Lace MC is all about helping people in need. Jennifer also mentioned, “We feel our children are our future
and will carry on our heritage and we, in Leather & Lace, are willing to do our part to ensure that future. As it has been said before, ‘If we don’t do it, it won’t get done.’” Members of Leather & Lace MC get together for all kinds of occasions. For those that don’t have other women to ride with, Leather & Lace MC opens up a magnitude of opportunities to ride with women from all over the country. It’s not unusual for members to plan attending runs in other states. There are regional gatherings, at informal parties all the time. One member said, “We do enjoy each other’s company. And we find ourselves trying to figure out how to work in a trip here and there to go see each other. Being a few hours ride from each other is nothing really; it gives us a chance to blow some wind through our brain and get back to feeling like ourselves before we get to our destination. It is a monumental feeling akin to a religious high when we do all ride together – it still sends shivers through me!” The women of Leather & Lace MC are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, grandmothers, and great grandmothers. Some of the women are paramedics, designers, accountants, managers, business owners, and web designers. Any Leather & Lace MC event you attend is always full of laughter, smiles, encouragement, and chocolate! 2013 marks the 30th year of Leather & Lace MC. There is the National Meeting that is held every year during Daytona Bike Week in Daytona, Florida. There is a mid-summer event where members travel with their families and spend a weekend together. Every opportunity to ride somewhere within the United States and meet up with one another and their families is an opportunity never missed. There are rides scheduled all throughout the country that always hold anticipation and excitement for everyone! If you like to ride, help others, and enjoy meeting new people, then Leather & Lace MC may be for you! For more information on becoming a member of Leather & Lace MC, please check out their website: www.LeatherandLaceMC.com.

20th Annual MHA Motorcycle Ride And Poker Run By: Charles Holcombe AKA Uwharrie Charlie New route! New stops! This was a great 96-mile ride through Stanly and Anson Counties. First, let’s start with the opening of the event. Mental Health Advocates of Stanly County (NC), Chairperson, Linda Hoy and Eric Crisco of Monarch in Stanly County are setting up the forms, tables, and food to get ready for their 20th ride benefiting Mental Health in Stanly County. It is t-shirt riding weather this morning, which is a good sign of what the rest of the day will bring. Eric finished the pre-ride meeting around 10am and Mr. Almond opened the ride with a prayer. He is also the follow truck driver. The ride begins at Albemarle High School in the downtown area, but takes a new turn on to the NE Connector heading towards Troy. With the help of the Albemarle Police Department, we have no problem making our way out of town. After crossing the Bridge at Badin Lake/Lake Tillery we turn right onto Hwy. 73 towards Mt. Gilead where our first stop will be at the corner store near Burger Shack. It was a nice time to catch up with other riders and meet some new folks.

There was no problem getting out of the parking lot and on our way to the second stop of the ride, as the Mt. Gilead Police Department just happens to be on hand for the occasion. The ride down Allenton St. and over to Thomasville Church Rd. and around Grassy Island Rd. was a welcome surprise to most riders who have been with us for many years. We eventually made our way over to Burnsville for a stop at the store there for some rest and more chatter about bikes and stuff. Leaving there, we rode through Low Water Bridge heading for Hwy. 138 and eventually Hwy. US 52 N, which takes us back to the start/end point of the ride at Albemarle High School. The BBQ supplied by Neil, owner of Whispering Pines in Albemarle was fantastic as usual, and the raffle prizes were plentiful and were supplied by BRH PowerSport Services, Tilley HD-Salisbury, and others. The 50/50 drawing was won by Cassie Boggess, Weary Traveler was Leanne Nafus, Most Riders Recruited was yours truly with the Tilley-Salisbury HOG chapter running a close second, Junior Participant was Mattie Davenport and the donor of the award trophies was The Trophy Shop in downtown Albemarle. DJ Terry spun the tunes before and after the ride. $1150 was raised to help with depression awareness, suicide prevention, and those in a crisis here in Stanly County. Need more info? Ray Price Akea Express Drag Racing Tames “The Mountain” By: Sarah Hager The Ray Price Akea Drag Racing Team takes another win in the NHRA circuit at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, Colorado June 16th. In the first qualifying run, rider Tommy Grimes got the number three spot with a run of 6.981 seconds at 209.07 MPH. The second qualifying run moved Grimes into the number one qualified spot with a low ET of 6.688 seconds at 210.21 MPH. With track altitude at 5000 feet, and its corrected altitude air density at 9000 feet, the lack of air was a challenge for tuning for each team. Timers in the third round of qualifying malfunctioned, which resulted in an aborted run. On the fourth and final qualifying pass Grimes ran 6.759 seconds at 218.30 which wound up as the top speed of the race and the 6.688 from round two held up for number one qualifier. The race came down to Sunday elimination with recurring equipment issues. First round elimination with a borrowed computer, but it malfunctioned and didn’t get any data. However, the timers worked, and locked Grimes in with a run of 6.805 seconds at 208.65 MPH for the win. Second round elimination used another borrowed computer, this time

without timers on, and Grimes ran 7.557 seconds at 154.50 MPH, winning the round. Again, there was no data to aid the team in calibration for the final round. In the third round of eliminations, Grimes won the race with a run of 6.720 seconds at 212.59 MPH. “Running at that altitude and that kind of air was a real challenge to find a combination that would get down the track. The team had never raced at Bandimere or had ever met the conditions of air that thin before,” Ray Price said. “I’m very proud that we as a team could find a combination to win. Even though we didn’t turn any stellar times, no one runs as quick and fast on “The Mountain” as they do at lower altitudes. This race was a prime example of racer helping racer. We had computer data retrieval problems and were able to borrow computers from two different teams. Dale Nilles loaned us his spare unit for one round and Rich Vreeland loaned us the one off his bike for the last two rounds. We left Bandimere feeling very fortunate, grateful, and lucky to have gotten the win. We had a great time. The whole facility is top notch, very beautiful. The Bandimere family and their whole crew are very proud of their track and work very hard to make everyone feel welcome and keep it very clean and well prepared for racing. I look forward to going back in the future.” The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support. By: Jennifer Levine On Wednesday, July 10th, the Mooresville Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Easy Eddie’s new location at 225 South Broad Street. 3rd Annual Carolina Patriot Rovers Benefit Ride And Concert By: Buzz Mid way through a wet summer, it was no surprise that Saturday morning July 13th started off with overcast skies and the threat of rain. I wasn’t going to let the “threat” of rain keep me from supporting a worthy cause, and getting some wind in my beard. Besides, I had planned on being at this ride for months! I arrived at Crescent Ford in High Point, NC to register for the ride at 8am. Registration ran 8-10 am. David Cantara, one of the founders of Patriot Rovers, and his wife, along with some of their staff were ready with registration sheets and biscuits for the first 100 riders! Registration was slow at first, but bikes kept riding in and by the end of registration 112 bikes were ready to roll! There was a large show of support from Veterans, some of whom were Patriot Rover recipients, who rode to show their support. There were even 2 dogs, Snoopy and Chewy the Biker Dog that came along for the ride with their owners. The ride was fully escorted by law enforcement that went over some pre-ride instructions and then we were ready to ride! We took a nice scenic ride up through the country to Eden, NC where we stopped at a gas station and country store for gas and refreshments. While we were stopped, we had a chance to socialize and stretch our legs before heading back into Greensboro. It was a great route that took us through some farmland and some decent curves. The forecast had called for it to be a nasty, rainy day, but the Lord had smiled down on us and the rain held off and we only ran through one brief shower a few miles from our destination. When we arrived at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro for the after ride party, the sun broke through the clouds and it made for a very comfortable afternoon. American flags were flying all throughout the park, and the smell of hot dogs and hamburgers was irresistible! A silent auction was set up to the left of the stage at the Motorcycle Park with some really nice auction items including patches, electric guitars, Maine Lobsters, and more! While we settled in Katie Nordeen of Fox 8 took the mic and introduced David Cantara to those who didn’t know him. David then showed us a very moving presentation of the history of the Patriot Rovers. The Carolina Patriot Rovers honors our heroes with their work. Partnering with Gold Star Mothers and Families, the dogs honor soldiers who have paid the ultimate price as a result of their service to our country. The presentation included slide show of our fallen heroes who were being honored and remembered by having a Rover named after them, providing a living memorial. The slide show also showed pictures
the Rovers with Veterans with whom they had been placed as service dogs. After the presentation, The Chris Lane Band took the stage and played their first set. While the music filled the park, I got a chance to talk to some of the Veterans in attendance that had been placed with a Patriot Rover. The Veterans all praised the program and their Rover for helping them live their lives with their training. It was really cool to see such a strong bond between the Rovers and their owners. The silent auction prizes were awarded, 50/50 winner announced, and the band took the stage for their second set. The sun was shining brightly, and I was very happy to have been a part of this event. What cause is better then helping our Veterans and honoring our fallen heroes? It was a great day all around. The Patriot Rovers need on going support to keep their healing mission on track. slowed the riders progress to a crawl. The two riders that opted for the 1,500mile course broke off from the other ten in Tennessee and headed South through Alabama, across Florida and back up to South Carolina. “It was a very scenic and pleasant route on the interstate,” said Wolfman from the Praetorian Guard RC, one of the two riders opting for the 1,500-mile course. The last rider from the 1,000-mile course rolled into Beaufort, SC at 2AM Sunday morning exhausted and proud of their accomplishment. The two bikers from the 1,500-mile run rolled up at 3:30 PM Sunday afternoon. Many bikers will tell you they ride 1,000 miles all the time and then tell you about the ride to some location 300 miles away. There are few that can back it up. These twelve bikers can now back it up!

By: Rough Rider In the early morning hours of June 22nd, before the sun came up, the members of the Praetorian Guard Riding Club eagerly awaited arrivals for the 2nd Annual Iron Butt Run. The riders had two choices of courses this year. They could opt for a 1,000-mile endurance run to be completed within 24 hours, or they could ride the 1,500-mile course to be completed within 36 hours. As the riders rolled in, the club members quickly went over the course layout, briefed them on the Iron Butt Association rules, registered the riders, and checked odometers. The $50 registration fee went to support the Lowcountry Autism Foundation (LAF). Dr. Tami Lawrence Buck from LAF was on site to greet each of the bikers and thank them for their support with coffee and donuts. LAF provides no cost assessments of autism and provides family support. One child in 88 is diagnosed with autism.
PORK SCHOP Drink Specials Every Day
The bikers sported hardy smiles as they hit the streets before sun up and began their individual runs. The members of the Praetorian Guard RC that were not riding in this year’s event filled support rolls. After the last of the bikes rolled out, sweeper trucks with trailers set out on the road to their predestinated areas to ensure none of the participants were left stranded along the road. Other members of the club closely monitored weather and road conditions to ensure there were no unexpected changes on the selected routes. Each rider’s progress was monitored and posted on the Internet for spectators to follow. Ten riders set out on the 1,000-mile course. Each rider left the swampy low country and set out for the mountains in Tennessee. Each rider reported their position to the route monitors of the Praetorian Guard RC at each gas stop. The weather remained good until the turn around point in Gordonsville, TN. On the way back a hard down pour

Story and photo by Alan Dockery The middle of June Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort, near Ferguson, NC, has one of my favorite parties of the year, the Spring Fling. And finally, the weather forecast was warm and dry. Soon as I rode in Friday afternoon, it was hugs and cold beer from long-time friends. Happy Birthday to Sam, Tim, and Gail. Y’all always party hard. By dark, we had a bunch of friends around the campfire. Soon Dave cranked up the tunes in the game room and we sang and danced while folks still managed to shoot pool. The creek was way up high and too fast to get in the rapids, but it was still just fine for sittin in the shallows. Fast moving water made the tubes fun to ride and the fish were pretty well fed so we didn’t catch many. Some folks did land some nice ones though. Saturday night the Olde #7 Band took the stage. This is a pretty good band that played some songs you don’t often hear at parties. How about groovin’ to Led Zeppelin on a pretty night at Riders’ Roost? Sunday morning was warm and clear so I took the slow way home. For y’all who ride up Highway 16 to The Roost, Russell’s Gap Road is paved all the way through now. I’m looking forward to seeing more of y’all in Elk Creek this summer.

Protect Your Privacy From Event Data Recorders American Motorcyclist Association grassroots@ama-cycle.org On June 18, U.S. Reps. Mike Capuano (D-Mass.) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) introduced H.R. 2414, the Black Box Privacy Protection Act. The bill will protect motorcyclists’ rights by requiring manufacturers to prominently disclose to consumers if an event data recorder (commonly known as a black box) is installed on their motorcycle, the data collection capabilities of such a device, and how such data may be used. The bill clarifies that the owner of the motorcycle owns the data and it may not be accessed without the permission of the owner. Furthermore, this bill requires that manufacturers provide consumers with the option of controlling the recording function in automobiles or motorcycles manufactured in the future that are equipped with black boxes. In other words, consumers would have the ability to turn the black box on or off. Currently, no federal law exists that clarifies the rights of vehicle owners to ownership of the recorded data. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking requiring black boxes in all cars manufactured after Sept. 1, 2014. The NHTSA already has disclosure requirements, but the Black Box Privacy Protection Act would make the disclosure more prominent and
give consumers even greater choice and privacy protections. The American Motorcyclist Association protects motorcyclists’ freedom to ride and we support this bipartisan bill. If you are concerned that your insurer will selectively use data from a black box recorder to increase your rates, or that recorded data may be used to target you in a civil or criminal proceeding, then you—the motorcyclist—should urge your representative to support the Black Box Privacy Protection Act. Be sure to follow the “Take Action” option at http://goo.gl/ BzgNR to send a pre-written email directly to your representative. Now more than ever, it is crucial that you become a member of the AMA to help us protect your freedom to ride. More members means more clout against the opponents of motorcycling, and your support will help the AMA fight for your rights – on the road, trail, racetrack, and in the halls of government. To join, go to AmericanMotorcyclist.com/membership/join.

By: Deborah Capps On Sunday, June 9th, Bralie’s Sports Bar & Grill in Durham, NC, hosted a Biker Tribute For Unforgotten Friends. This event started with the efforts of Don Adams, Carolyn Clayton, and Deborah Capps to honor several bikers who are still missed every day. Among those honored in tribute were: Kenny Grissom, Craig Alford, David “Sheepdog” Winstead, Rodney Watson, Randy Lewis, David Cannady, and Rex “Sexy Rex” Herndon. Approximately 200 people attended the event and enjoyed a free pork chop sandwich, slide show of the men being honored, and music by Johnny Orr, Catching Fire Band, and DJ Robert White. There were vendors set up and biker tribute Tshirts and tank tops were available for purchase. Several small businesses in the area donated raffle items. Leslie Crabtree, owner of Bralie’s said a few words, thanking everyone for coming out and offered a moment of remembrance, stating, “How lucky we all are to have known these special men” and “Thanking them for being a part of our lives, for making our lives a little better, just by knowing you.” Upon conclusion, Rodney Lewis, son of the late Randy Lewis, hugged Crabtree and shared a tearful moment. All friends and family in attendance said how great the tribute was. Adams, event co-chair, simply stated, “Something had to be done. It’s been too long since we had the opportunity to get together to remember our friends who are no longer with us.” Linda Grissom, widow of the late Kenny Grissom, was there with her family and thanked the committee for organizing the event. She said, “Kenny would have loved this.” There were several other family members present of other Unforgotten Friends as well. The committee of this event is in hopes that this can become an annual event, that we will always remember our biker friends and that these and all other biker friends that we lose along the way will never be forgotten.

Flattrackin’ At Woodleaf Speedway Story and photo by Alan Dockery The last Saturday in June, I was back at Woodleaf Speedway for their second regular motorcycle flattrack race of the season. This is a little ole country oval where once a month they race motorcycles. During the summer, they race most weekends, running gocarts, and sometimes lawnmowers. That night fans got an extra show for their money. The previous night’s gocart race was rained out, so they ran all the go-cart and motorcycle classes. Woodleaf runs several motorcycle classes from 50cc up. The coolest bike that night was an old single cylinder Indian flattracker. To beat the Carolina summer heat they start practice at 5pm and racing by about 7. Woodleaf this is a family place so feel free to bring your kids, but don’t bring alcohol. 11th Annual CrossRoads Harley-Davidson Night Of Fire
By: Bethany Marshall After many days and nights of storms and bad weather, on Saturday, June 29th, the skies cleared and CrossRoads HarleyDavidson lit up the sky with their own 11th Annual Night of Fire. A day full of fun and excitement turned into a ‘Night of Fire’ with a 40-minute Professional Fireworks show provided by Hale Artificier Fireworks, Inc. that could be seen throughout the High Country. The event started out with a Big Tent Event and continued all day including everything from inflatable slides, jousting, a bounce house, adult tricycles, authentic ‘Night of Fire’ Tshirts, the Spevco Rinehart Trailer, killer tunes from DJ Fast Freddie, the hot sounds of Bad Mountain Brew and The Konnection Band. Michael Russell, Professional Photographer, was here taking Harley photos with proceeds going to High Country First In Families. There was also a 50/50 and raffle with proceeds going to the family of local Wilkes County Fallen Firefighter Tony Barker. The raffle included prizes such as tickets to a Carolina Panther’s football Game, a flat screen TV, Harley gift cards, and more. “This event gets larger every year and would not be possible without the help of our co-sponsors, volunteers, and everyone that came out,“ said Mike Lipford, CrossRoads Harley-David-
Michael Russell Photography 336-990-1791 son General Manager, “and I can’t thank everyone enough.” One of the highlights of the day came when CrossRoads Harley-Davidson had the honor of being joined by local firefighters and the Wilkesboro Harley Owners Group to present a check to the family of Wilkes County Fallen Fire Fighter Tony Barker. “This is a resilient family just trying to get by after losing a brave father and husband working to protect our local community” said Mike Lipford, “CrossRoads HarleyDavidson wants them to know that their community supports them through this extremely difficult time.” With the help of sponsors: Carolina West Wireless in Wilkesboro, Spevco, Holiday Inn Express of Wilkesboro, Spevco Trailers, R.H. Barringer Distributing Company, Inc., Amalfi’s – Wilkesboro & Boone Locations, and Kendall Johnson Custom Apparel, CrossRoads Harley-Davidson truly ended the month with a bang. Everyone needs to make plans to celebrate their Independence Day ‘CrossRoads Harley-Davidson Style’ next year. Check out the CrossRoads Harley-Davidson website (CrossRoads-HD.com) for all of their amazing monthly events, then take a ride to CrossRoads Harley-Davidson at 1921 US Highway 421 in Wilkesboro, NC to see this great dealership.

1st Annual Wounded Warrior Run At VFW 9899 By: Rick Gammons Never been to this VFW Post? It is located at 2923 Archdale Road, directly behind the old Bandanas building in south High Point. It is a small place with large support of our military and programs for the community. A small shower Saturday morning, June 22nd did not stop 38 bikes and 50 riders from pulling out of VFW Post 9899 about lunchtime to start the 1st Annual Wounded Warrior Run. The cost was $5 for non-riders and $15 for riders, which included the ride, the food, and a poker hand. Rodney Baily with the help of many others got this ride together. This was Rodney’s first attempt at doing an event of this type and I was pleasantly pleased at the level of organization that went into it. Unfortunately, I am still chasing electrical ghost in my bike, so I missed a great ride. Diamond Dave (road captain) took everyone on the planned route, rolling in happy and hungry at roughly 4 pm. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken wings, and fixin’s had been prepared for everyone. The VFW Post had been selling ride shirts several weeks before the event and 130 were sold by the ride date. There are a few left! You can still get one and show your support for the soldiers who fight and sacrifice for this country. Call 336-4311106 to order. After the eats, there was an auction. I have been to many biker auctions before and this one was just right. I can’t fit a chair or table on my bike, but I can carry a beer sign, hat, or cake, which were some of the MANY items auctioned. Many of the items I saw here are not normally seen at most of the auctions. As of the printing of this article, a final total of money for the Wounded Warriors has not been determined because donations are still coming in. Unconfirmed sources (bar room talk) say that $1400 to $1800 will be raised for this project. There was also a band - Steel Wolf. They laid out some serious rock and roll while everyone relaxed and discussed the
price of tea in China. As I stated before, this was VFW Post 9899’s first try at an event of this type and I am already hearing rumors through the grapevine that another one is being planned in six months, so be ready! I expect this next one to be even better. So many contributed to this ride, so I am just going to list sponsors and personnel: Miller Brewing, National Guard, Krispy Kreme, J. Michael Jewelers, Grey Jewelers, RC Hobby, Fat Mac, Lowie Bowles (artist), Peters Auto Mall, Sharkey’s, Skyler Mae, Ted’s Chicken, Food Lion, and Hampton Inn. Thanks to Sherrie and Milissa (beer tenders), Rodney, Scott W., Steve and Scott B., Ricky, Terry, and last, but not least, the Archdale Police Department. Good job ladies and gentlemen. I plan on being at the next one. You folks need to be there, too! Watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for the date.

Harley’s 110th Anniversary Party At Tilley H-D
By: Jeanette Cline and Tonya Ward On a sunny and warm June 22-23 weekend, Tilley HarleyDavidson of Statesville, NC, celebrated Harley’s 110th Anniversary with a big two-day weekend of fun, laughter, great music, food, fellowship, and free beer. Thanks to our volunteer bartender, Anthony Goodyear, for entertaining us with his great personality and dance moves. Saturday kicked off with DJ Dr. Randy Davis followed by Rough Around The Edges band at 3 and then at 7pm to 11pm to finish the night was Hyndsyte of Hickory. Three 16, a Christian Band, provided the music on Sunday. During the weekend about 1,000 people stopped by to help celebrate Harley’s 110th Anniversary. We lined up this event with vendors, live music, and a lot of hard work setting up and cleaning up for a two-day event. A big thanks to our Statesville HOG Chapter guys Ron Thomas & Sonny Deal for all their hard work setting up tents, tables, chairs and directing our traffic. The Statesville HOG Chapter also sold Raffle Tickets an iPad. Everyone seemed to have a great time and our store stayed open Saturday night until 8pm for our customers. We gave out pieces of decorated 110th Harley-Davidson cake to all who came out that weekend. Boxcar Grille of Statesville was here both days cooking and serving some great food along with plenty of vendors to
make this a fun filled weekend. Other vendors and supporters include: CHDDA Passport Ride for Life 2013 Tour, Cabana Tan, Thirty-One Gifts, Oragami Owl Jewelry, O’Cup Bean & Bakery, 48 Customs Air Brushing, Johnny Bailey’s, Johnny Sign Stylz & Etched Glass, Farm 430 Salsa, Jams and Jellies, Leather Works, J&J Concessions, and the Mooresville Hooters Girls who did the Bike Wash. Once again, a job well done by the planners, HOG members, all staff of Tilley’s, and all that helped make this event a success.

Ricky J’s And The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Fourth Of July Throw Down
By: Mark “Stretch” Carlyle On July 4th, Ricky J’s Bar & Grill teamed up with The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine to have a bike show with games and a wet tee shirt contest. I had the pleasure to join Ricky J’s in hosting this event. We started the evening with great food from the grill and music provided by the band Rock Bottom. The rains came and keep the crowd to a minimum. Only a hand full of bikes came as the downpours came. We were unable to hold the games we had planned outside. Lisa, Ronnie, and I then put our heads together and did a “Name That Tune” with the band. We had a blast with the crowd as they tried hard to name some of the classics were played. The winners got tee shirts from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. We also gave away Full Throttle Magazine koozies and shot glasses. When I ran out the ladies came up and gave me their addresses and phone numbers. Man, I love my JOB! If you missed an opportunity to get a free one, you can get yours at www.FullThrottleMagazine.com/Merchandise.aspx When the rains moved out, we moved outside for the wet Tee shirt contest. With a little liquid courage and encouragement, we ended up with six contestants. Some of the ladies cut their shirts to their liking. As I began to pour the ice-cold water, things began to stiffen up, some bigger than others! The crowd narrowed the ladies to three, Angelica, Monique, and Karen. As I asked the crowd their opinion on which of the ladies should be the winner, it suddenly turned into a WHAT tee shirt contest. Angelica performed the “super man” ripping her shirt off and Karen pulled hers up. Well, needless to say, they won and split the money. A Special Thank You to Tiffany Black Photography for com-
ing out and spending her time with us. Tiffany has only been in the business for a couple of years now. She is really becoming a very good photographer and has done many shoots of various events. Thank You Tiff! You can find her on Facebook/ tiffany black. July 4th is a day when we remember many things, our independence, our troops past and present! We all show our support with flags flying and shooting things. This is a day when many of us get on our scooters and ride in support of those things. Thousands upon thousands across this country ride with flags, shake hands, and express our thanks to our service men and women! We as a country should do this EVERY DAY! Without them, we couldn’t ride and have a great time with friends and family!

The 14th Annual Smoke Out Rocks On By: Everette “EZ” Short Some events are just so unlike any others that when you describe them, it sounds like you’re making it up or describing something from a movie you saw. The Smoke Out is that kind of event and it is always fully throttled. For the last 14 years a man named Edge, his incredible crew of superheros and The Horse Back Street Choppers magazine (www.ironcross.net) have thrown a party that rivals “Beyond The Thunderdome” in believability. This is a fast pass festival of freedom. Held at The Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina, The Smoke Out draws a crowd that includes bikers, builders, old school and new school riders, racers running everything under the sun, and some things that were built out of nothing more than spare parts and a lot of imagination. There are people bending metal, mentalists building things on the fly, people running nekid and, if you’ve been around for a while, you’ll see familiar faces from all over the country. And that is just at the show. Then, there is the campground of madness! Some of you might remember camping? The wild abandon until the first light of dawn, only to collapse into a soggy mess on a familiar bag in a tent that you put up in a drunken stupor? Yeah, we had a lot of that, relentless humidity and a lot of adult beverages also helped fight off the cactus infestation that seemed to crop up in the middle of all these misshapen nylon huts. By the time I got there on Friday night, Rebel Son was ratcheting the crowd into a fist pumping frenzy. If you don’t know who they are, then go to their website (www.rebel-son. com) and listen to a few of their rock-a-billy foot stomped hits, like “I’m Gonna Kick Yer Yuppy Ass” or their myriad of other politically incorrect tunes. You probably won’t ever hear this trio on the American Top 40, but that’s all for the better. Rebel Son means every command and syllable they mutter, utter, and scream. Meanwhile, out in the campgrounds, burn outs raged in a makeshift pit until dawn, and not one person in the campground complained about the insane noise, second hand smoke, or deadly carcinogens being released into the atmosphere. There was a giant crowd at the pit when I walked back to camp at 5:30AM with the sun coming up through ominous rain clouds, lightning striking in the distance. The next day, both lanes were open on the strip and luck of the draw drags were on! This is where you have no idea who you are racing against, until you pull up to the line. Unfortunately, the rain put a quick stop to that. Throughout the morning and long into the afternoon, there was a bike show where everyone was marching around, proudly proclaiming that they had taken third place, but I never did get any sort of verification about the actual placements. I am sure there were 1st place winners, but you’ll have to check with the authorities to see who won what? In the end, everyone was first class, if not first place. Then, there was the mini-bike racing. In the three wheel class, Bean’re and his accomplice were in the headlights when they lost a third wheel and ran into something.
Once again, several people, many of whom were dressed in drag or in superhero costumes, professed to be winners. Obviously by the smiles and ass grabbing, the only clear winners were those brave cross dressers riding on haphazard machines that were never meant to reach the speeds attained. There was a lot of running over barrels, into each other and other antics, but there were no reported injuries. This was pure, organized chaos with a rain and hooch factor that made for a sticky wet dream. On Sunday, it was a wet grassy mess in the mud as we all gathered our scattered belongings, hugged one last time and said our “Love ‘Ya, Mean It” goodbyes. I only know I woke up feeling really old. Leaving this event is always bittersweet, but that might just be the muddy cactus and bug spray caught in my beard from sleeping face down in a lawn chair. If you’ve never been, then you probably won’t understand. If you went, then you are probably still picking spurs, cacti and prickly things out of your feet while you read this. Hangover? What hangover? Every year since 1999, for a couple of days a year, we have broken away from the rest of the world to live the dream. It was good to see that the dream is still alive at the 14th Annual Smoke Out.

Spokes & Jokes
The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!
After a tiring day, a commuter settled down in his seat and closed his eyes. As the train rolled out of the station, the young woman sitting next to him pulled out her cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: “Hi sweetheart. It’s Sue. I’m on the train. Yes, I know it’s the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long meeting. No honey, not with that Kevin from the accounting office. It was with the boss”. “No sweetheart, you’re the only one in my life. Yes, I’m sure, cross my heart!” Fifteen minutes later, she was still talking loudly, when the man sitting next to her had enough, he leaned over and said into the phone, “Sue, hang up the phone and come back to bed.” Sue doesn’t use her cell phone in public any longer.
realize that the porch goes all the way around the house?” The man replied, “She should. She was standing on the porch.” A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money. “You’re finished already?” he asked. “Yes,” the blonde answered, “and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats. “Impressed, the man reached in his pocket for the $50. “And by the way,” the blonde added, “that’s not a Porch, it’s a Ferrari.”
“So, where y’all from?” The New York girl said, “From a place where they know better than to use a preposition at the end of a sentence.” The girl from Texas sat quietly for a few moments and then replied: “So, where y’all from, bitch?”

Recap of 2011-2012 football season: Alabama beat Arkansas, and Arkansas fired their coach. Alabama beat Tennessee, and Tennessee fired their coach. Alabama beat Auburn, and Auburn fired their coach. Then Alabama beat Notre Dame, and the Pope resigned. Damn, I wish the White House had a team!
Because I’m a man, when I catch a cold, I need someone to bring me soup and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You’re a woman. You never get as sick as I do, so for you, this is no problem.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. 2013 version: Give a man a welfare check, a free cellphone, cash for his clunker, food stamps, section 8 housing, free contraceptives, Medicaid, ninety-nine weeks of unemployment, free medicine, and he will vote Democrat the rest of his life even after he is dead. A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her to do. “Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?” The blonde said, “How about 50 dollars?” The man agreed and told her that the paint and ladders that she might need were in the garage. The man’s wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, “Does she
A blond man shouts frantically into the phone “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!” “Is this her first child?” asks the Doctor. “No!” he shouts, “this is her husband!”
A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a Sheriff. He thinks he’s smarter being a big shot lawyer from New York and has a better education than a Sheriff from West Virginia. The Sheriff asks for license and registration. The lawyer asks, “What for?” The Sheriff responds, “You didn’t come to a complete stop at the stop sign.” The lawyer says, “I slowed down and no one was coming.” “You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License and registration please,” say the Sheriff impatiently. The lawyer says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I’ll give you my license and registration and you can give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don’t give me the ticket.” The Sheriff says, “That sounds fair, please exit your vehicle.” The lawyer steps out and the Sheriff takes out his nightstick and starts beating the lawyer with it. The Sheriff says, “Do you want me to stop or just slow down?” Two young boys walk into a pharmacy one day, pick out a box of Tampax and proceed to the checkout counter. The man at the counter asks the older boy, “Son, how old are you?” “Eight,” the boy replies. The man continues, “Do you know what these are used for? “Not exactly,” the boy says. “But they aren’t for me. They’re for my brother – he’s four. We saw on TV that if you use these you would be able to swim and ride a bike. Right now he can’t do either one.” A girl from Texas and a girl from New York were seated side by side on an airplane. The girl from Texas, being friendly and all, said:
An old, blind cowboy wanders into an allgirl biker bar by mistake. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender, ‘Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?’ The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, Given that you are blind, that you should know five things: 1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat. 2. The bouncer is a blonde girl. 3. I’m a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate. 4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter. 5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler. Now, think about it seriously, Cowboy. Do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?” The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, “No. Not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.” Q: Why don’t women blink during foreplay? A: ’Cause they don’t have time! After the North American Beer Festival, all the brewery presidents decided to go out for a beer. The guy from Corona sits down and says, “Hey Señor, I would like the world’s best beer, a Corona.” The bartender dusts off a bottle from the shelf and gives it to him. The guy from Budweiser says, “I’d like the best beer in the world, give me ‘The King of Beers’, a Budweiser.” The bartender gives him one. The guy from Coors says, “I’d like the only beer made with Rocky Mountain spring water, give me a Coors.” He gets it. The guy from Miller sits down and says, “Give me a Coke.” The bartender is a little taken aback, but gives him what he ordered. The other brewery presidents look over at him and ask, “Why aren’t you drinking a Miller Lite?” The Miller president replies, “Well, I figured if you guys aren’t drinking beer, I wouldn’t either.”

Maggie Valley Bike Fest And Swap Meet By: Anchor It was a dark and stormy night… Na, I just wanted to start a story like Snoopy did in the good ole days. It was dark and heavy cloud cover on the first day of this hopeful annual event. The clouds were all around us, and as we were going to this event it didn’t rain, and while we were there it didn’t rain. It looked like it was going to, but didn’t. This event was put on June 7 – 9, 2013 by the good folks at Salty Dogs in Maggie Valley. We pulled up around 1300 on Friday. There were a few people willing to brave the weather and all the vendors were there and the band called MILE HIGH was playing music. I have talked about them before. It is a 3-person setup, they have a good sound, and they can hold their own on stage! As we checked out the vendors the bikers had a game of corn hole going and people were just praying that it wouldn’t rain, but this wouldn’t be a dark and stormy night if it didn’t, so at 6pm the bottom decided to fall out of the clouds and the place began to clear out quick. We told Joe & Nikki we would be back the next day and had to brave the wonderful storm that hit us to get home. This was the first time my wife had to endure rain like this on the bike. She has been through some small showers of rain before but nothing like this. Fifty minutes of pure thunderstorm rain, she did great! It rained like that all night.

The next morning we got up and she was ready to ride! Now, that is a great biker chick! We left out, stopped at Smoky Mountain Steel Horses for their Grill & Chill, and proceeded to Maggie for the Bikefest. Saturday was such a beautiful day - perfect weather for riding and going to this event! We pulled up and the place was packed. Obviously, the weather brought ouat tons of people ready to have a good time. The bike show was going on in the back, the Moonshine band was on stage on one side and they had another stage set up at the other end with The Mile High Band playing again. As people were enjoying beer from the Bud Light trailer and enjoying seeing friends, everybody was rounded up for the games that were starting. I have the pictures on our website so everyone can see who was doing what. Some winners asked not be named due to thinking they were going to get teased later, all I can say is the winner of the slow ride hot dog mouth grabbing contest shocked her DAD who happens to be named in the article. Yeah, I know I am mean, but it wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t! After the games were complete, we listened to some great tunes from the Sharkadelics, Kayla McKinney and Slick Willy that closed out the night. I can say for the first run for this dare I say Annual event it was a blast! We had fun and enjoyed all that was there and I can’t wait for next year’ event. And, just as a nice plug, you need to go to Salty Dogs and ask Joe to make you a steak hoagie that he made for Anchor from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. If you don’t like it, something has to be wrong with your taste buds, cause it was awesome!

12th Annual Angier Bike Fest
By: Gypsy Rose Photos by: Biker Bob Saturday, June 1st was a nice hot day to be out and about and we hope everybody got to come out to downtown Angier, NC and enjoy the Angier Bike Fest. The day was full of venders including the walking taco and a bull riding for kids of all ages. The Chamber Of Commerce was under the gazebo selling t-shirts and we were there giving out magazines. There were many things for kids and adults alike. There was a lot of entertainment throughout the day and to start it off was Cheynee Latshaw who sang the National Anthem during opening ceremonies. Other bands included The Blenders, Southpaw, Audio Bros., Tight Like That, and Down Pour. Over 50 bikes showed up for the 73-mile run to benefit Angier Black River Fireman’s Fund. Thanks to Seven Sabres Motorcycle Riders Club, especially to Arlene & Tony Mabry, who planned and organized the poker run, $480 was raised. Then there was the bike show with 35 entries. The winners for this were: Full Dresser: 1st Place - Jason Beavers, 2nd Place - Bruce Beavers both from Clayton NC, Heavy Cruiser:
Full Dresser: 1st Place - Jason Beavers 1st Place - Meredith Page, 2nd Place - Dave Clukey both of Raleigh NC, Light Cruiser: 1st place Dave Hockady, 2nd place Brandon Hockaday, Sportster: 1st Place - Bob Arnaro, 2nd Place - Andrew Burt both of Angier, NC, and Trike: 1st Place Ken Braswell of Four Oaks, and 2nd Place - Susan Godwin of Newton Grove. Each received a cash prize as well as a trophy. Congratulations to all. Thank you to Ms. Geraine Tally, Todd Carson, and Wolfman for doing the judging and to Lesha Kelly, Jeffery Porter, and Butterbean for manning the bike show. Thank you to all the volunteers, Gene Josyln and the committee, for making this a great day and thanks to all the sponsors including The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and Ray Price Triumph. Without all the sponsors this would not have happened. Thanks to all who bought t-shirts for bike fest, the Chamber Of Commerce still has t-shirts available, so if you did not get one please go by or give Cindy a call and she will be glad to help you out. Until next year - Ride Safe and enjoy the rest of the riding season.

The Mr. McGoo Benefit And Charity Fun Ride By: Everette “EZ” Short If you hang around long enough, you’ll notice that some people just stand out like shining stars - making you laugh, telling a joke, or just making you notice how good life is. Paul (McGoo) McGoogan is just such a person with a quick smile and a gentle manner. Recently, McGoo was diagnosed with lung cancer that has spread to his lymph glands and, like a lot of us he has no insurance or medical coverage. Now he is unable to work. McGoo, and his wife Cheryl, have always been there to support charity event fundraisers, so it was only logical that on Saturday, June 18th, his friends would come together for The Mister McGoo Benefit and Charity Fun Ride. Amazingly, JC Childers, who rode with us through the day, and The City Line Saloon booze crew (down Kings Highway on the Southern edge of Myrtle Beach) opened their hearts and wallets to host this homespun event. In chaotic fashion, kickstands went up about noon thirty and everyone headed in different directions to find Murphy’s Law. Since there are three Murphy’s in different locations in this area, several of us went through various beach cities in search of the right bar. Eventually, we all met up at Patty’s Dew Drop Inn of Surfside. If you have never been there, you’ll love ‘em once you find ‘em. Check out their ad in this month’s issue for a map of how to find them. This is a great little bar and it was packed by the time we rolled in. Even in the midst of our huge crowd, Patty took the time to come out from behind the bar, welcoming us with hugs and munchies. Moments later, we were on our way to Donny’s Saloon at 3rd South in Myrtle Beach, where Doghouse Donny and others joined in, bought a few rounds, tossed some cards and rode with us for the rest of the way. Then, in a bizarre parade, most of us went into Myrtle Beach proper, parking on the grass under the new Zipline adventure right across the street from Barnacle Bills on 8th Ave North. It wasn’t long before the local militia showed up to curtail our shenanigans, but they were quite pleasant about it. No big deal, just us rolling into MB to say, “WE ARE STILL HERE...” with a few hundred beer brandishing bikers drinking in the street. I want to send out a
big “WELL DONE!” to Gauge, who rode with us all day, and his Barnacle Bill army for keeping their cool throughout the AC breakdown and a small police action going on at the same time. After rounding up the well-meaning troublemakers, we scooted out below the radar, to end up back at the City Line Saloon for a big feast of homemade dishes spread over 40 feet of tables, with more than 80 people in attendance. By the time McGoo arrived, he was a welcomed hero and the ride had pulled in over $5,500, with more money on the way and there was great live music from Chicago Bob and George Davis on stage. The tears flowed as he kept saying he had no idea he had this many friends. The neat part of the whole thing is that by the time it ended you could actually feel the love surrounding everyone in this misshapen family of bikers. People who didn’t even like each other were laughing, riding, eating, and drinking together, without a single cross word. That day, when we rolled as one, like you would at a family reunion that you actually wanted to be at, it was all good. Feel free to call JC at The City Line Saloon (843) 238-0280 if you would like to help. If you were there, tell others how good it can be to help someone who deserves it. We all wish Mister McGoo and his family the best and we are all betting that you can beat it. Good times, good friends.

Melanie James and Fred Lesinski unveil the motorcycle parking sign By: Old Spook On the 14th of June, Fred Lesinski, Chief of Voluntary Service at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC, dedicated motorcycle parking spaces in the name of Alan “AJ” James. AJ was a member of Post 179 of the American Legion and the Warhorse Brotherhood. Alan was a strong supporter of veteran causes, in particular, the Charleston Homeless Shelter for Veterans. His rides from California to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC were an annual event that he and his wife Melanie always looked forward to. He became a fixture on the run and many of the towns put out signs to welcome “Slick” back each year. Before his unfortunate motorcycle accident, Alan had been working on the recent Veteran’s Information Fair that took place at Low Country Harley-Davidson this past month. That event was dedicated to Alan as well.

Smoky Mountain Steel Horses Grill And Chill
By: Anchor In the middle of a beautiful weekend on June 8th, our great friends from Smoky Mountain Steel Horses had a small little party called a Grill & Chill. I and a few of my friends stopped in to see what kind of fun they had planned for that day and they hit one of my favorite things on the head and that was free food! Once we sat down to eat, we were listening to a great cover band called Audio Alliance. They sang some great songs from all over different time periods. Also we got to have some really good friends from the Moonshiner show on Discovery Channel, Jeff and Mark come in as a surprise on their new bikes that are sponsored by Steel Horses. They had pictures taken with them and signed autographs, but for a group of people that are on a hit show (Just got signed up to do 26 shows for the new season) they are some of the most down to earth people you will ever meet. They talked about how certain things are done on the show that people don’t get to see and the different events and charities they have attended to help the local area people know that they are thought of! We also discussed doing some toy runs toward the end of the season for the underprivileged families that don’t

necessarily have to do with biking just to show that everyone is family and everyone needs help from time to time! I will be posting these rides in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Cruisin’ Calendar so we can make these rides VERY successful and so that you can also have an opportunity to meet these guys and see what I see in them! Now after bragging a little on the Moonshiners, back to the true sponsors of the event. Steel Horses had some deals going on during their event and of course my wife took advantage of that. We got her a new helmet and a few other items that were great deals. Steel Horses has a large selection of clothing, jewelry, riding gear, motorcycle parts, and a FULL maintenance shop. They also rent bikes out for the people who didn’t have the ability to bring a bike to these fine mountains, so you can ride on these upcoming events no matter where you are coming from! If you are out riding or just driving by on a rainy day swing on in to Smoky Mountain Steel Horses at 82 Locust Drive, Just off of 23/74 (Great Smoky Mountains Expressway Exit 100) in Waynesville, NC (828-452-7276) and say hello to the friendly staff and look around. I think, NO, I know you will find something in this magnificent shop that you will WANT or NEED! Be sure to mention that you read about Smoky Mountain Steel Horses in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.

2nd Annual Kruzin’ For Kidneys!
By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, June 29th, the 2nd Annual Kruizin’ For Kidneys Ride was held at Lucky’s Saloon in Burlington to Benefit Daniel Mize, a brave young man needing a kidney donor. The ride started at about 12:30 pm from Lucky’s Saloon in Burlington. Over 50 bikes and bikers participated in the event to help raise money to help with medical expenses for Daniel and the person who will possibly be his donor. The ride safely made its way through Alamance County making it’s first stop at Mark’s Place in Snow Camp before proceeding to the Corner Bar in Liberty, to Joyce’s down Hwy 87 South, then it was back to Lucky’s Saloon. Megan Doss, Mitchell Street, Tool Box Kiddy, Craven Jones, Last Shot Down, and Absent Theory provided great entertainment. Lucky’s served up some delicious grub and there were lots of door prizes and raffles. Event T-shirts were also available. A very unique, custom painted Harley-Davidson themed guitar was raffled off and brought in $400 for the benefit. Guitar Dog and members of Last Shot Down donated the guitar. Through the ride, raffles, a 50/50 drawing, and T-Shirt sales over $4000 was raised for this worthy cause. This benefit will be an annual event and plans have already been set for next years ride, which will be held June 14, 2014 at Lucky’s Saloon. The whole purpose for this ride was to raise money for Daniel’s transplant and find organ donors. Four people volunteered to be tested to see if they would be
compatible as a donor. The Kruizin’ For Kidneys committee would like to thank everyone at Lucky’s for everything they did to make this benefit possible. Barry Hicks and all the staff at Lucky’s worked round the clock after closing on Friday to get ready for the ride. A Big Thanks to them for all their hard work and getting food prepared for all the hungry riders. Last but not least, thanks to everyone that participated to make this event possible. Thanks goes out to everyone who volunteered their time and talents as well. Remember! Ride Safe!

They are an AMA sanctioned, historical motorcycle club and are one of the oldest in existence. Teaming Up For Hospice By: Robin and Renee Saul Chunk’s Hawg Haven The weather forecast warning of rain and all of the green showing on the radar could not stop the motorcycles from gathering to answer the call for Hospice of Greensboro. On June 15th and June 29th, the Sawmill II and Chunk’s Hawg Haven joined up for poker runs to raise money for Hospice. It’s great to have such a good relationship as we do with the Sawmill, both personal and working, and these two Saturdays proved no different. Between the two days over $6,000 was raised for Hospice and everyone involved had a great time. Robin and I personally want to thank Susan and Carole at the Sawmill II and all who were involved for their participation and generous donations. You won’t see this covered in mainstream media because they don’t understand that bikers have huge hearts, and give freely of both their time and money. Thanks again for a great experience.

A Family Of Fish Heads
By Mark “Stretch” Carlyle On June 9th the family and friends of the Fish Heads met for something none of us want to do - remembering the passing of friends no longer with us. This year The Fish Heads MC met to ride in remembrance of three members no longer with them, David Thompson, Jimmy Stephens, and Lori Fiorazanti. A group of 60 or more riders came out to MVP’S Raw Bar & Grill to meet up with the Families. The ride proceeded to Lake Norman for the ceremony. Everyone formed a huge circle with the families along with some Fish Head Family releasing the 3 balloons in remembrance. It truly was a touching moment. From there we rode to the north side of Lake Norman to River City Bar & Grill. This is where we got to hear a little about David, Jimmy, and Lori. How they supported each other along with the things they stood for. Let me tell you a little about the Fish Heads MC. They have chapters in Charlotte and Winston-Salem, NC and active members nearing 100. They are a group of true friends that are doing good things and having tons of FUN doing it! They support The Cancer Society, toy runs, and many more causes. They are a true group of friends that like to do good things. They will be quick to tell you that they consider themselves a Social MC. Just recently two members were diagnosed with cancer. All of us has known or know of someone fighting this terrible battle. Remember to keep those we know and don’t know in our prayers! Keep up the great work Fish Heads and ride safe!

7th Annual “Tricky Ricky” Memorial Benefit Ride By: Scott Wicker The 7th Annual “Tricky Ricky” Memorial Benefit Ride will indeed go down as the best and biggest so far in this unique ride’s history. The ride is held in memory of “Tricky Ricky” Shambley. Ricky was an official for many years with the AHDRA and a great friend to the biker community in the Alamance County area. For the last 7 years, “Tricky’s” brother Doug has planned and organized the event with the help of many friends and family. The first two years, the ride benefited a child or teenager in the area that has gone through physical challenges or illnesses. Five years ago, the ride benefited then 3-year-old Reagan Allison who suffered from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The 1st year, the ride was held for Samantha Harvell, a teenager suffering from Osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. This year’s ride, as was the last four year’s rides, benefited Sam’s Wish Fund at Kids Path of Hospice of Alamance and Caswell Counties, an organization that does many great things at no cost to those they are helping. Whether it is making a dream come true like a trip to the Bahamas to swim with the dolphins, a trip to Disney World, counseling a sick child, a trip to the beach, or a child who is dealing with the loss of a loved one, they are a true blessing. In the ride’s history, it has raised over $122,000 with over $100,000 going to Kids Path of Hospice. Over 200 bikes participated in the ride, which started at 3 Stooges Cycles near Elon College. The ride made stops at 4th St. Bootleggers in Mebane and Lucky’s Saloon in Burlington before ending at the after party at Jimmy Cable’s Farm near Elon College. There, over 3000 people were treated to great food and lots of door prizes were given away as well. Hip Pocket Band, Back Porch Orchestra, Down-n-Dirty, and Sok Monkee provided entertainment. A 50/50 drawing was held
and the winning hands from the run were announced. Everyone that participated became members of the Awesome Possum Club. In all, over $40,000 was raised, that’s right folks, over $40,000 was raised and given in memory of Samantha through donations, the ride, raffle ticket sales, and event t-shirt sales. Doug and everyone that made this event happen would like to thank those who participated, all the sponsors, and everyone who donated items, their time, and talents in making the ride another huge success. A Huge Thank You goes out to Lucky’s Saloon, 4th Street Bootleggers, 3-Stooges Cycles, Jimmy Cables Body Shop, and Down Home Harley-Davidson for all that was donated to this great benefit! See you next year! Remember! Ride Safe!

By: Mark Infield On July 5th while most of North Carolina was at the beach, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, Greensboro Harley-Davidson, and World Class Powersports hosted Bike Night At NewBridge Bank Park. This park is a great place to watch a baseball game and this night there was an opportunity to ride our bikes on the field and a free fireworks show after the game. What a deal for $7! We were right on schedule when a mechanical problem with my ’73 Servicar changed everything. Molly went back to High Point, got the truck, and came and rescued me with the trailer. We missed the ride on the field, but the motorcycles came out through the center field gate and circled the field. The last bike was barely out of the gate and on to the field when the first one arrived to exit! I do not have a count on the motorcycles, but there were bikes representing World Class Powersports, Harley-Davidson Of Greensboro, Triad HOG, Bad Lasses, Freedom Biker Church, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, and more. It was a good showing on a night that promised rain. And rain it did! There was a 2-hour
rain delay and the grounds crew covered and uncovered the field twice in anticipation of a start. Everyone crowded under the cover of the mezzanine waiting out the rain. World Class Powersports had rented the party deck and invited us to join them during the delay, so we enjoyed their hospitality and a nice breeze, too. Finally, the weather passed and, after the National Anthem, I got to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. That was really cool! The Lakewood BlueClaws (Phillies) were in town to face the Grasshoppers (Marlins). They played a good game and in the bottom of the 9th inning the Hoppers scored once to tie the game and again with a walk off single to win 7-6! That, folks, is why you never leave the park until the game is over. The FANOMENIAL Fireworks Friday show sponsored by Lincoln Financial Group that followed the game was excellent. The Hoppers have fireworks every Friday and Saturday that they play at home. You can check the schedule at GSOHoppers.com for all the different promotions and dates. We didn’t get out of there until 12:30am, but it was a fun night with our friends at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, NC. It always helps if the home team wins! Veterans Information Expo
By: “Old Spook” The Veterans Information Expo took place at Low Country Harley-Davidson on the 15th of June. The Warhorse Brotherhood MC hosted the event and dedicated to Allen “Slick” James. Allen, a brother in the chapter and a notable supporter of veteran’s causes in the low country, was killed in a motorcycle accident the previous month. Mr. Lesinski, head of volunteer services at the Ralph H. Johnson Medical Center, related to me that Allen was always involved with helping the VA in support of veterans. The expo included many services that the Veterans Administration provides, one of which is called The Vet Center. The Vet Center provides counseling for PTSD specifically for combat veterans. Financial counseling is also an important part of the service provided. Any combat veteran needing help should call the center. The services are free. A number of independent agencies were also in evidence. One called Sholom dealt with drug rehabilitation of the soldier’s family members. The honor guard from American Legion Post 179 displayed the colors for Major General Livingston, Medal Of Honor recipient, who opened the expo with few remarks. The General
suggested that the Vietnam Veterans now carried the mantle that was previously carried by the “Greatest Generation”. General Livingston strongly supports the need to help the veterans who answered the call of duty. “They stepped up to the plate. Now it’s time for us to step up to the plate and offer our help.”

Bros & Bro-ettes
There’s been some good riddin’ days this summer; hope you have been able to enjoy them. Do you check the weather forecast before riding or just get on the bike and go? Do you carry a jacket, or rain gear, no matter how hot or sunny it is when you start out? Do you head out prepared or unprepared? The absolute coldest I have ever been on a motorcycle was one year in Sturgis, SD. It was 105 degrees that day when Carolyn and I headed out, riding into Wyoming, and eventually stopping in Newcastle, WY with DQ and Beth from Christian Riders Biker Ministry, as they were to Minister at a Church there that night. The service went well and we decided to take the short way back to Sturgis through the canyon. What we did not notice was the name of the canyon; “Ice Box Canyon” is true to its name even when the daytime temperature has been 105º. Needless to say, we were not prepared! We had one pair of gloves between us; I used one on the throttle hand and gave the other to DQ. There was absolutely nothing through there, no motels or stores and it was late on Sunday night; and very, very cold! We kept riding hoping to find a place to stop that was warm, but nothing; just mountains on each side and dark and very, very cold! Carolyn had always heard that right before you freeze to death you get very sleepy. She was getting very tired and sleepy so she was sure she was freezing to death, and about to die in “Ice Box Canyon;” and to tell you the truth I wasn’t so sure myself! However, we finally made it back to Sturgis without freezing, but learning a really important lesson; always be prepared! No matter
what it’s like right now, things can change quickly and be opposite of what you expected. So now, we always carry gloves and a jacket and also check weather forecast and pay more attention to the maps and signs. Being prepared for what may happen helps make the riddin’ more enjoyable. So my next question is; have you checked the forecast for this ride called life, or are you just going through it? Are you prepared or unprepared? The Bible is our roadmap and instructions for life. It prepares us for the good times and the difficult times; when things are as we like them and when they change quickly. We should pay more attention to the Word of God and the warning signs that are in it. Don’t neglect the Lord; just because it’s a good riding day today doesn’t mean it can’t change by tonight. Are you prepared or unprepared? The first step of preparation is to believe in your heart and confess (pray) with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. Pray the Biker’s Prayer on this page, mean it in your heart, and ride this awesome ride called life; for Eternity!
IN “HIS” WIND Preacher Steve
P.S. A couple of weeks ago, Preacher Steve was accidentally hit in the face with a softball and spent some time in Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He is home now, but is struggling with his memory. I am sure that he would appreciate your prayers. Due to his situation, we got this Bro & Bro-ettes out of our August 2009 archives. I hope that by next month, he will be back with some fresh insight from the Lord.

Catawba Valley Marine Corps League’s 5th Annual Veterans Benefit Poker Run And Bike Show By: Frank “Gunny” Smith On July 13th, the Catawba Valley Marine Corps League sponsored their 5th Annual Veterans Benefit Run and Bike Show in Conover, NC. The main beneficiary of this year’s event was Purple Heart Homes, a local veteran’s organization for disabled vets. The day started with thick, dreary, overcast clouds and a threat of rain. Ryan’s Sports Bar and Grill in Conover was the main sponsor of this year’s event. The owner of the bar, Jim Ryan, is a former Marine and a strong supporter of veterans. Jim offered the use of his Sports Bar as the start and finish of the event and for the bike show. Even with a severe threat of rain, bikers steadily rolled in. At the end of the registration, bikes were still coming in so registration was extended for an hour. It was an uneventful ride with only a slight sprinkle in one area of the route. As the bikes rolled back in, the grill was fired up and all participants were given a free meal and drinks. After eating, there was a drawing and numerous door prizes were given away, with almost two prizes per rider. One item was auctioned off, a “Fifty Piece Hot Wings” coupon donated by Hooters of Hickory. The winner of the poker run was James Fincannon, with 3 of a kind, who was presented with $200,
James Fincannon won the Chopper Class and Best of Show and donated $100 back to the Marine Corps League. The winner of the 50/50 drawing was Jake Fincannon, who won $152 dollars and gave a contribution of $60 back to the Marine Corps League. The Worst Hand winner was Gerry “Boats” Millhollen, who won a pitcher of beer. I am fairly certain that a portion of that was donated back before the day was over, too. Due to the weather, the turnout was less that hoped for, but there were enough bikes entered in the bike show. The Best Custom award went to David Hensley. The Best Street award went to James Glazebrooks with the Leathernecks MC Club. The Best Touring award went to Stanley Gilreath. The Best Trike award went to Zack “Capt. Hook” Fincannon of the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association. Tom Lain won the Classic/Antique trophy. The winner of the day was James Fincannon. James won the Chopper Class and Best of Show with on one bad chopper! The main supporters of the event this year were Ryan’s Sports Bar, Horsefeathers, Hooters of Hickory, Pepsi of Hickory, and a special thanks to Doc with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine who handed out prizes to the riders. The Leatherneck MC Club and Combat Vets Motorcycle Association were present to represent their organizations. Even with the weather putting a damper on the turnout, this was still an excellent event for a worthy veterans organization.
