CBA is proud to announce that along with our new venue, the Rowan County Fairgrounds, Tilley’s Harley Davidson is sponsoring our show. Tilley’s has two great dealerships to serve you, one in Salisbury and one in Statesville. We believe with our new location and sponsorship, that this will be one of our best shows yet. Metrolina Expo was sold and torn down and the Jaycee’s at the Rowan County Fairgrounds have welcomed us and you with open arms. They are some great folks to work with and we think you will like it there. This will be the second show at this new location and we believe it will be bigger and better than our last show and with your help and attendance, it will be the best show on the East Coast. Come out and see Luke Heafner’s ’52 Panhead which is featured in the November Easyriders Magazine. Dano Simmons from South Main Street Customs in Kannapolis, will also have at least one of his sled pulling trikes on display. Brothers and Sisters, bring your bikes to the show for a chance at $1,000 cash and trophies. We have 12 classes to be judged. The People’s Choice bike show winner has a chance of being on our next show fliers and the front cover of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine as well as being featured in Bob Karney’s Motorcycle Calendar. We will have a $500 door prize for Saturday and Sunday. We will have wet t-shirt contests both days with $500 in cash prizes. Come on out and you can find new and used motorcycles for sale. You

can find new and used and chrome parts for your bike. You can find motorcycles clothes, jewelry, and accessories while enjoying great food, beverages, live music, and an old fashioned good time. I have never seen as many used parts in the midway and going out the back gate as I did at our November show. So, if you need any used or antique parts, you should be able to find them at our show. We want to remind you that when you attend our show, or any CBA event across the state, all the money stays in North Carolina and is used to promote our sport and lifestyle and to be your eyes and voice in Raleigh and Washington, DC. We try to keep you informed of legislation that affects us as bikers. We talk to legislators and let them know how we feel. We fight against some legislation and also help introduce some favorable legislation. You need CBA and CBA needs you. We need a united motorcycle organization to have more impact with the Legislators. Remember, “United we stand, divided we fall”. Join our/your organization now! We will be having a membership drive at our show. You can join CBA for the low, low cost of $10 and help us represent you in Raleigh. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February Party

By: Mark Infield On Saturday, February 11th Julie and Ken Farmer, owners of Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken in Winston-Salem hosted The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 19th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party and Oyster Roast. We call it the Fear Of February Party because sometimes the weather is bad. Not so this year! With a Carolina blue sky and temperatures pushing 70º there was nothing to fear. Vendors were setting up and bikes began rolling in at 11:30. Everyone was anticipating a big day and no one was disappointed. Matt Dylan and the Honky Tonk Outlaws started belting out classic hits and the steamer was heating up. Raw oysters from Todd’s Seafood in Thomasville were put out on the table for those who couldn’t wait for the first bunch to come out of the steamer. Renea Brown was in her traditional role selling the “Deal Of The Day”, an event t-shirt and 5 raffle tickets for $20, and the annual favorite Girl Scout Cookies. When the bikes rolled in, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle tent was their first stop. Everyone who has ever been to the FOF Party before knows that the event t-shirts sell out quick so that is their first order of business. Inside, the staff was cooking wings as fast as they could and the bar tenders were moving at the speed of cup stackers. They did a great job all day long. The sun was warm and made the icecold beer taste great. What a way to kick off the riding season! Every so often, Lincoln and Doc would dump another batch of oysters from the steamer onto the table where their life expectancy was about 10 minutes! No one would disagree: they were delicious. Many thanks to Bob Karney Law Firm and Smokin’ HarleyDavidson for sponsoring the oysters this year. Throughout the day the band would take a break and that gave us an opportunity to give away merchandise form Ted’s and FTM.

Everyone likes free stuff! During one of the band breaks an acoustic duo called “Leather & Lace” played for the crowd. They did a good job, too. During the day, Lydia, Dawn, and Kathy made their way through the crowd offering raffle tickets to everyone. The next order of business is to determine who gets the bragging rights as the beer chuggin’ champion for 2017. We split the contestants up by (gasp!) gender. We had 9 men and 4 women participate in the first round. Ladies first! Idella, Karen, Kelsey, and Ally were front and center. Idella and Ally advanced to the finals. We gave the ladies a break while the men showed off their prowess. Blake, Michael, Jaime, Spike, Shawn, Jeff L., Jeff S., Jimmy, and Keith stood proudly before their peers. Blake, Jaime, Spike, and Jeff S. were eliminated and the others advanced to the semifinals. Meanwhile Idella and Ally faced off for the ladies’ championship and the coveted trophy – a beer mug etched with “Screw It. I Need A Beer”. Idella now owns the mug and the bragging rights. Now it was back to the men to see who would advance to the final round. Michael, Shawn, Jeff L., Jimmy, and Keith showed no signs of puking, but only Shawn and Keith would advance. Now it got tough. Back to back rounds to determine the Chuggin’ Champion. Shawn inhaled the winning beer and claimed his 2017 Championship mug. Out of the shadows came Idella, the women’s champion to challenge Shawn. Dang it! She can swallow! No former

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 women raised their hands and offered to be his sweetheart! The final item of business was to give away the 55” 4K UHD TV provided by The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Drum roll, please. Christopher Layell, of Clemmons will be watching the Daytona 500 on this baby. We even threw in a wall mount just for good measure. Congratulations to all the winners. After another set by the Honky Tonk Outlaws we closed the book on The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 19th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party and Oyster Roast. It was a good day and it was the biggest event at Ted’s ever with a reported 800 motorcycles. Charlotte Easyriders Bike Show 2017 Story By: Alan Dockery Photo By: Lincoln Infield The third Saturday in January a whole lot of y’all “Got your motor running and headed on down the highway” to the Easyriders Bike Show in Charlotte, NC. The weather was great this year so I saw many of our advertisers and friends at the show. That’s part of what this dead-of-winter show is about. It’s good to see old riding buddies. As soon as I walked in, the vibe was that we were fixing to enjoy a great show. There were lots of cool motorcycles and vendors across the Convention Center floor. Folks commented on how much they liked the layout this year with the mix of bikes and vendors. Custom motorcycles of all kinds were everywhere. The wildest baggers you

could imagine with tall front tires were next to traditional skinny choppers. There were antique and stock machines, too, so there was something for just about everyone who likes motorcycles. Plus, there were some old hot rod cars and trucks scattered around, too. The vendors were busy all day selling those biker needs that ain’t always in stores. I should have made another pass through the vendors to see what I missed the first two times. I got my copy of Bean’re’s new book “Rambles The Orient” and the latest Rebel Son CD.

Most of the show is made up of bikes and vendors from this area, but Easyriders brings a big show that wrapped around the outside of the floor. All day there was entertainment on the stage. Between bands, the Purrfect Angelz put on a show and did meet and greets. Lots of celebrities were there, either officially or just digging the show. Michael Ballard from Full Throttle Saloon, was working hard for his fans. Jason Wilson of Discovery Channel’s Sacred Steel Bikes was there with some of the coolest rides in the place. NTC Drift Trikes put on demos several times throughout the day. Overall, I think Easyriders brought a great show to Charlotte this year. It’s really all about the bikes. There were some awesome machines there. Great seeing y’all who stopped by The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine booth. We gave away all the 1,300+ magazines and goodies we brought. His journey began in Pensacola, FL, where he started as the guy who did whatever he was asked to do, including cleaning the bathrooms, sweeping the floor, mowing the grass, etc. He was able to navigate his way through the different departments ending up as the Service Manager in 2003. He excelled in service so much so that he was offered the General Manager position in 2009, where they went on to win a Bar and Shield Circle of Excellence award for six consecutive years. Curtis joined Scott Fischer Enterprises in July of 2015 as the General Manager of Rocket Harley Davidson in Huntsville, AL. Curtis and The Rocket Team were able to turn the dealership around and because of his leadership qualities, Curtis was offered the opportunity to return to his home state of Florida and became the General Manager of 6 Bends Harley-Davidson. 1st Annual Chad Bostic Memorial Bike Show By: Johnny Reb The 21st of January was the day of the inaugural Chad Bostic Memorial Bike Show. Chad was the owner of the Pit Stop, he was taken from us much too early. I am not going into details, just suffice it to say, hopefully, the scumbag that took him from us will rot in jail for the rest of his miserable life. I did not know Chad personally, so I asked his numerous friends and customers about him. I think I can sum up with one word describing him, mentor. Everyone said the same thing, whether it was advising on pool, or life in general, they all went to Chad for his advice. He was a fierce friend and loved his family. That family included his wife and three daughters, but it also included his friends and customers. Joy Bostic, Chad’s wife has taken the reigns of the Pit Stop and really ran with it. there on Tuesday and Thursday. There is always something happening at the Pit Stop. Joy said she wanted to do something for the date of Chad’s death, something that he would have liked to see. Well, we went with a bike show and pool tournament. Bubba Hoffman said he would cook a pig and we sold plates. The day of the show was damp and cool but that did not stop bikes from coming in, we had around twenty bikes show up, not bad for a first-year show, and considering the weather conditions it was definitely a success! The Ghost Riders MC judged best in show, and there was also the people’s choice award. The winner of Best in Show was… wait for it… yours truly! Yup, I brought an 1984 iron head Sportster bobbed that I built for my son Lucas Upham. He is in the Marines, and can’t ride right now. The People’s Choice went to our fearless leader of the Pit Stop, Joy Bostic! This was a blind judging as the bikes were numbered with no names. She just bought her beautiful Heritage Softail so that was definitely cool that her bike got picked! All the proceeds from the bike show, the BBQ plates, and the pool tournament was to go towards, Chad’s daughters’ education. Joy and her daughters, Brooke, Nicole, and CJ, would like to thank everybody who helped make this happen; the bartenders and staff that worked so hard, Bubba Hoffman for his awesome BBQ plates, and The Ghost Riders MC for judging the bike show. They are looking forward to the future and next year’s bike show. Remember to ride safe, y’all!

Ways To Avoid Motorcycle Crashes We all know that riding a motorcycle is exhilarating, but riding comes with its dangers. Drivers of four wheel vehicles sometimes have trouble seeing motorcycles and motorcycles offer much less protection than most four-wheeled vehicles do. Additionally, the high-performance mechanics of motorcycles may be more than the rider can handle. Due to these reasons, motorcycle crashes tend to be more likely to cause severe injuries and even death. In 2013, the federal government estimated that the number of motorcycle deaths is approximately 26 times greater than the number traditional vehicle deaths.

2. Vehicles Merging Into A Rider’s Lane Of Travel:

As all riders know, motorcycles are simply harder to see than other, larger vehicles. This well-known axiom holds especially true when it comes to the blind spots of other motorists.

First and foremost, motorcycles should do all in their power to avoid riding in other motorists’ blind spots for prolonged periods of time. Just as cars should not travel in the blind spots of tractor trailers, motorcycles should not travel in the blind spots of cars. If you cannot see a driver’s face in his rear-view mirrors, he/ she cannot see you.

Also, be cognizant of signs of a potentially merging vehicle. Blinkers, head movement of drivers, and open lanes during periods of heavy traffic are all indicators that a vehicle next to you may be planning to merge.

The most common types of motorcycle crashes are: 1. Vehicles Turning Left Into A Motorcycle’s Path:

This type of collision occurs all too often when a motorist, usually unfamiliar with or not anticipating a motorcycle, either fails to see or fails to accurately estimate the distance and/or speed of an oncoming motorcycle and attempts a left turn into the path of the bike.

As a rider, you should be in the habit of anticipating the movements of these other vehicles. Most vehicles will give indicators of their intention to turn prior to making such a movement. Gaps in traffic ahead, speed of said traffic, and the existence of vehicles in the oncoming lane are all indicators of whether a vehicle from a subservient street may attempt to turn left onto the dominant road. All riders should also pay close attention to these cars trying to make turns onto dominant roads. They themselves will likely show signs of their intention to turn. Tire movement, blinkers and the driver’s head position can all be indicators of a driver’s intent to immediately turn onto a dominant street. Be prepared to take immediate evasive action if you see that a car’s turn is imminent.

3. A Motorcycle Rear Ended By Another Driver:

Obviously, these types of collisions are some of the most difficult to avoid for motorcycle riders. Unfortunately, distracted driving is all too common of an occurrence on the roads these days.

The best thing riders can do to avoid this situation is to keep an eye on vehicles approaching from behind as the rider comes to a stop. Make sure to keep your bike in gear, so that you may be able to take evasive action if necessary. If it appears that a vehicle may not be able to stop in time, attempt to move to the shoulder of the road or move past the car in front of you. Avoiding a direct impact while on a motorcycle can make a major difference in the severity of a potential collision.

In the event you are involved in a crash, carefully document what happened as best you can. It is a good idea to keep a daily journal noting how your injuries are affecting your daily life. Keep track of medical appointments, days missed from work, etc. Many times, officers blame the motorcyclist for the collision even though fault clearly lies with the other driver. Stay calm and be respectful to the officer. Do a little of your own detective work by obtaining contact information of any witnesses to the accident. If able, take pictures of the scene. The Battle Of Cowpens Anniversary

By Wally Wersching On Saturday and Sunday, January 14th and 15th, the 236th anniversary of the Battle Of Cowpens was celebrated. It happened during the Revolutionary War after the Battle of Kings Mountain. On January 17, 1781, Daniel Morgan led his outnumbered troops against Banastre Tarleton’s British troops. It was another victory for the Americans, and helped turn the tide of the war in our favor. The last battle of the movie “The Patriot” was loosely based on the Battle Of Cowpens. There were encampments of Revolutionary War re-enactors who demonstrated musket firings. Cavalry demonstrations were held by the members of the 3rd Continental Light Dragoons. All forms of 18th century life were exhibited by very knowledgeable reenactors, all wearing authentic uniforms, and civilian garb. After checking the weather forecast for the weekend, I decided to go on Sunday. Sunday was a bright, sunny day with only a few clouds in the sky. I decided to ride “Miss Vickie”. Last weekend, we had snow, and single digit cold temperatures. The park was closed during that time. They were very lucky to have the activities this weekend instead of last. When I arrived at the Cowpens Battlefield near Chesnee, SC, it was just about 10:30AM. I was guided to a great spot in the parking lot near the main building by the South Carolina National Guardsmen who were directing traffic. The air was filled with wood smoke from the camp fires as the re-enactors cooked breakfast. I walked around taking pictures of the people getting ready for the long afternoon. In the background, I could hear the hammering of the blacksmith making things in his forge.

There were a couple of young children playing with a hoop and stick. They’d throw the hoop in the air, and catch it on

the stick. The older girl was pretty good at it. I walked to the area where the weapons firing demonstrations were to be held. There was a film crew taking movies of the battle. The British were standing in a line while the Patriots formed a skirmish line near the woods. They didn’t fire their weapons but the British charged with bayonets - yelling all the way, and the Patriots fell back into the woods. I walked into the museum to watch the movie but it wasn’t going to be shown until later. I walked into the room where the light show describes the battle along with other events in history around the same time frame. I had to ask the ranger to start the show for me. It’s very interesting to see how the battle played out. It’s like having a bird’s eye view of the battle while a narrator explains what’s happening. At 11:15, there was a cavalry demonstration in a nearby field. There were three horsemen in the proper uniforms for their respective regiments. They talked about using the horse as a weapon while in battle with the infantry. The main weapon for the cavalry soldier was the sabre. Some also had pistols. It was very interesting. They were a little long-

winded so I left to see the weapons firing scheduled for 11:45. I watched as the line of riflemen marched to their places in front of the crowd. They didn’t talk much about their lives as soldiers like they did last year. They turned an about face, and fired their flintlocks on command. It was pretty loud, and some of the children were afraid. It’s always enjoyable to see the muskets fire, and smell the burnt black powder as the smoke drifts over the spectators. When they fired again, there was no bang from the muskets – only a small pffst from one of the musket’s primer. All six muskets misfired. I would imagine that misfiring happened a lot during battle when the powder wasn’t dry. While walking around the encampment talking with the re-enactors, I learned that they came from all over the southeast to participate in the activities. I talked to one young lady who actually works in Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. She was supposed to be a refugee, and drank water from her gourd canteen. There was a group of young women who slept under a tree the night before. She said that it rained a little but they were all under cover, and the rain didn’t penetrate their blankets. I walked around the encampment once more, and saw a group of “Red Coats” playing music on a fife and a drum. I cannot wait until next year to visit the battlefield celebration again. I never know what I’ll see, or who I’ll meet. It’s always very educational, and interesting.

NC CBA/ABATE Lobby Day 2017 By: Charlie Boone On February 1, 2017 there was a gathering in Raleigh, NC of 27 bikers committed to affect legislation in the NC General Assembly. These men and women met for an informational session before taking the short walk to the Legislative Building to speak with their legislators. They had several issues to place before them. First was HB28, a bill to require that any parking facility built with any public funds (taxes) must be made to accommodate motorcycles. Several representatives signed on as sponsors of the bill before day’s end. HB28 has now passed through the House Transportation committee and goes to the Regulatory Reform Committee. The next item was the Freedom bill, better known as the helmet bill. This would allow freedom of choice on helmet usage for those over 21 and with $10,000 in medical insurance. In the weeks after Lobby Day, companion bills for this were filed. They are HB91 and SB 66. You can get more info on where these stand now at ncleg.net. If you really want to ride free, contact your legislators and ask them to vote YES on these bills. Other agenda items that were discussed included our desire to have the “no texting” law strengthened. As this law stands now, it is almost impossible to enforce. We would like to see it made into a “no distracted driving” law that calls for a careless and reckless charge in the case of an accident causing injury caused by distracted driving of any sort.

The other issue is anti-profiling legislation. This would call for training for law enforcement on what constitutes motorcycle profiling, and would require all law enforcement agencies to put in their policy manuals a statement condemning such profiling. To keep informed on where these legislative issues are now, go to www.cba-abatenc.org. Better yet, join CBA and help us win the fight on these issues. One other issue that we are working on is a resurfacing project on the Blue Ridge Parkway. As this is federal property, we are working with our Congressmen to try to modify the current plan to chip seal 150 miles of the parkway. The 7th Annual Bike Ride For Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) By: Missy W. Easter Twenty percent of all children are abused or neglected! And 1 out of every 4 girls are sexually abused by the age of 18! How devastating! It’s hard to imagine when you look at all the children you know that there are that many that are abused whether it is by an immediate family member, relative, neighbor, teacher, coach, or just an acquaintance. The SCAN Center provides programs to prevent and treat child abuse to over 2000 children in Forsyth, Davidson, Stokes, Surry, Yadkin, Rowan, Alamance, and other counties in the central part the state of NC. They offer a variety of free services to the community including intensive home based intervention for at risk families experiencing child abuse or neglect, visiting 1st time parents at the hospital offering 24 hours telephone support with questions and/or concerns about infant care, parenting classes for parents at risk of abuse or neglect, parent/teen solutions classes to assist in topics relevant to teens, planned placement of children with agencies to reduce the potential for abuse, treatment after sexual abuse for families, including victims, siblings, parents/ partners and offenders, and many more. 100% of the proceeds from the ride go to benefit these programs. One annual ride provided enough money to cover the payroll for 3 months for one employee who had been targeted to be laid off due to lack of funding. How terrific is that? The

best news is that because of SCAN, the number of child abuse cases is trending downwards! Last year riders came from as far as Myrtle Beach, SC and we had our 1st dog rider, Shellie! The 7th Annual bike ride for Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of The Exchange Club will be held Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Missy Easter Nationwide Insurance Agency in Winston Salem. Harley Factory Team Replaces XR750 with XG750R Flat Tracker for 2017 Series For years the XR750 dominated the flat track for the Harley Factory Team and now the team is replacing the beast with the Harley-Davidson XG750R for the 2017 American Flat Track racing series. The team will exclusively ride the new XG750R bikes throughout the season which opens during Daytona Bike Week at the March 16 AFT Daytona TT with the new circuit featuring a jump constructed inside the Daytona International Speedway. Both the chassis and engine were developed in collaboration with Vance & Hines Motorsports. “Unlike our competitors, we are going flat track racing behind an American-made production engine,” said Kennedy. “The XG750R is a purebred racing motorcycle, but its modified engine is based on the same Revolution X V-Twin anyone can buy from a Harley-Davidson dealer in a Street 750 motorcycle, an engine designed by Harley-Davidson engineers and assembled at Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City. There’s a direct link from the Street 750 to the XG750R flat tracker the Factory Team will be racing for a championship, and that link is our passion for performance.” The XG750R raced through a development season in 2016 alongside the air-cooled Harley-Davidson Factory Team XR750 motorcycles. The XR750 has carried racers to countless victories and 37 AMA Grand National championships in 44 seasons of competition. Jay Turner Takes IHRA And NHRA Championships Story and photo by Alan Dockery Y’all Harley drag racing fans know there are lots of nitromethane-fueled race teams based in the Carolinas and Virginia. Well, in 2016 the teams we cheer for won just about every national fuel bike championship in the country. Jay Turner of Julian, NC, won both the International Hot Rod Association and National Hot Rod Association Top Fuel Harley championships. These are the two top American championships and to me the most significant worldwide. It is an incredible feat and Jay may be the only man to win both IHRA and NHRA championships in the same year other than Lee Shepard winning Pro Stock in 1972. The story of all these fuel bike championships goes back almost 40 years. And Jay’s family was a key factor in why we have so many fuel bike teams in our area. They gave folks a track to race on and fans heroes to cheer for at Farmington Dragway. “My Dad (Jim Turner) and Frankie Moore started motor-

cycle drag racing at Farmington Dragway in 1978,” Jay said. That was probably one of the first tracks in the Southeast to hold motorcycle races. The track had been closed for years. Dad and Jerry Joyce rented it and re-opened the track. They

started doing motorcycle drags once a month to increase business.” “I was 11 years old and thought that was cool. I thought they were cooler than the cars. I gravitated toward motorcycles, Harleys, and fuel bikes. I was working at the track, sweeping the bleach box, handing out time slips, whatever Dad needed me to do. Frankie built me a little 350 Honda that I raced for a couple years when I was 13 to 14.” While serving a tour in the U.S. Army, Jay’s parents bought Piedmont Dragway near Greensboro, NC. When he got out, he wanted to get back on the strip and on a fuel bike. After all Jay grew up at the drag strip in the best possible environment and got to know the early greats of the sport, Elmer Trett, Ray Price, Jim McClure, Bill Furr, and more. Jay jumped on a fuel bike early in his career. “It was like being the bat boy for Babe Ruth then going on to become a baseball player,” Jay said. “They all had a major influence on my start in racing and everything I’ve done. They all helped me out in one way, shape, or form to build a little Ironhead Sportster. I got on the track and wasn’t any good, didn’t really know what I was doing. They would tell me how I was screwing up and what to do better. They would come to the pit and see what I was doing and fix my mess.” Jay got serious about fuel bike racing in 1989 when he entered a Pro Fuel machine in what is now called Nitro Funny Bike. “I got a chassis from Bill Furr, heads from Jim McClure, engine parts from Elmer Trett and pieces and parts from other people,” he said. “Then Bill put the puzzle together into a fuel bike. I went out and tore it up about every time I raced.” “Worked my way up and talked myself into riding other people’s bikes. I rode for Ray Price a little while. I hooked up with Bobby Buckley, who I still race with now and is one of my biggest supporters. He was the first one to get me on a good bike. We won the 1999 and 2000 IHRA championships,” Jay said.

By then Jay knew he wanted to race for a living but that’s something hard to figure out and do. When Johnny Mancuso decided to retire, Jay raced for him a couple years. I remember Johnny as a successful Harley-Davidson dealer running a very professional team. Jay learned a lot from him about the business side of racing. After that he decided to do it. Success followed the focused effort and Jay started making a name for himself as one of the sport’s best. He won the All Harley Drag Racing Association Pro Fuel title in 2007 and Top Fuel in 2010 plus a few American Motorcycle Racing Association championships. In 2014 with Mike Scott on one of the team bikes they took the IHRA title and Jay won it in 2015 and 2016. “I always worked with IHRA to bring back Top Fuel bikes,” Jay said. “Did exhibition races for a few years. Then they started running us as a class.” “In the Winter before the 2016 season I was looking at all the schedules,” he said. “The NHRA thing was 10 races with your best seven counting for points. I started writing all the dates down and thinking. I don’t know if I can pull this off or get the opportunity again, but I’m gonna make a run for both of them.” “Then Ray Price died and I ended up buying his inventory of race parts. That was a big deal for us, but it also cut me out of one of the races. I didn’t get to go to Pomona, California, for the first race of the year. That cut me back a race and meant I was only going to seven. When they count your best seven of 10, you are best to go to 10 races so you can throw three bad races away. That put us in a bind where we had to make the most of all our races.” “We put a bike together and went out and did a bunch of driving and won a bunch of races and took two championships. I wasn’t arrogant to say it would be easy or was gonna happen, but I said I’m gonna give it my best shot. I don’t know if I, or anyone else, will ever get the opportunity to do Continued On Pg 46

Continued Fom Pg 45 it again. It was very satisfying when it all worked out like it did,” Jay said. To accomplish this amazing feat of drag racing, Jay ran eight IHRA races last year. He won four. They made seven NHRA races. Winning four of those. And he’s already started the 2017 season off by winning the first race at Pomona. “I never really take time to sit back and reflect because there is always something to do, more work to be done,” he said. “We just finished a monster around the clock build getting ready for the NHRA races. We started the first of December and built a whole new chassis. We’ve been steady at it, but then two weeks ago they announced the new NHRA program and we have to be in California this weekend. So, for the last 14 days I think I went home 3 or 4 nights. The rest of the time we just stayed at the shop.” “The championship bike is named Maddy. Named after Mike Lehman’s daughter Madeline. I picked it up last year. It had been sitting for a few years down in Florida. We completely rebuilt the whole thing. It’s a really nice bike. She’s a winner. Finds its way to the winner’s circle.” She has a Dixie Frame modified during the rebuild. Jay’s team builds the motors using the best parts from the best companies in the business. A B&J Two-Speed transmission helps put that 1,000 horse power to the dragstrip. “We have some product sponsors, but I’ve been fortunate to have always been surrounded by good people who help me out along the way when I need it,” Jay said. “And good custom-

ers. Most of my business is not racing, it’s maintaining other peoples’ bikes or hauling them to the track or renting them a bike. Some people have time to race and some people have the money to race and not the time. I can mix the two together.” I think that’s a win win for everyone. More people are able to race, more racers for the sanctions and the tracks. More racers for the fans to cheer down the strip. Customers are happy since they can show up at the track and have a good bike to race. Racers don’t have to maintain a shop, build a bike and deal with the logistics of racing. “There are some people responsible for me being where I am today. Number one is my parents. Dorothy is real important. I handle the racing part of our life and she handles everything else. And she does quite a bit. I’m very fortunate to have her. Coming up on twenty years of racing with Bobby Buckley and Benny Knott. Now that the Ray Price racing team isn’t operating any more Jeremy Hoy and Justin Heinle are coming with me. Mark Conner helped in 2016.” “I am proud to be from North Carolina and proud to be part of the history of North Carolina fuel bike racers and we are not stopping any time soon,” concluded future hall of famer Jay Turner.

Story and photo by Alan Dockery Tyler Wilson, Walnut Cove, NC, is the 2016 Manufacturers Cup Champion in the Pro Fuel class. These are the Harley VTwin-type, nitromethane-burning machines that y’all love to see and hear roar down the drag strip. The champ has been involved in drag racing all his life since Rickie Smith is Tyler’s uncle. Rickie is a well-known Pro Stock and Pro Mod racer and champion, plus dad to Matt Smith. Matt is our Carolina hero in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle ranks. “In 2010 I bought a Suzuki from my cousin Matt Smith, which I ran in the 5.60 bike class,” Tyler said. “That summer I took that bike to Farmington drag strip every weekend. Then two years later I bought a Pro Mod, raced it for about a year.” Growing up in a small North Carolina town, Tyler learned early to work for things. In 1972 his dad started Wilson Concrete Finishers, Inc. and he was working from the time he was old enough. When his dad retired in 2008, Tyler took over the business. “In 2013 I went to Rockingham Dragway and took Johnny Vickers Pro Fuel Motorcycle School. I rented one of his school bikes for several races and decided I had to have one. So, in 2015 Johnny built my Vickers Hawaya Racing Derringer Engine

Pro Fueler,” Tyler said. 2016 was the first full year for Tyler on the Pro Fuel machine and his first national championship. Manufacturers Cup is mainly imports, but the Pro Fuel Class is where the Harleys shine. These are the smaller nitromethanefueled drag race bikes with 121 cubic inch engines, single-speed no transmission and gravity fed carburetor. “I have been very fortunate in the fact that I am able to sponsor myself, go and have fun and do something I love. I especially want to thank my cousin Billy Collins and my wife for all their hard work. None of this would be possible without them. I also want to thank Buddy Foss and Janette Thornley for all their support and encouragement,” he said. “I honestly did not set out last year thinking I would win a championship. This was actually my first full year on my new bike. After making the long journey to Memphis, I realized I might have a chance at this. So, we headed to Valdosta, Georgia, for the last race. Everything played out in my favor and the rest is history. Winning the Manufacturers Cup Championship was awesome, but the best part is all the great people I have met and the friendships I have made over the last several years.”

Kings Mountain National Battlefield By Wally Wersching The Kings Mountain National Battlefield is located next to Kings Mountain State Park just south of the North Carolina border. Both parks are accessed by traveling on a beautiful winding tree-lined road which goes from I85 on one end to Rt. 161 on the other. I sometimes ride the road for sheer scenic enjoyment when I don’t have the time to get to The Parkway. It’s only a few miles from home. Last Thursday, I decided to ride “Miss Vickie” to the battlefield, and hike the 1.5-mile self-guided trail that shows the events of October 7, 1780 when the Revolutionary War took a turn for the Patriots. I pulled into the park about 2:30, and walked into the Visitor Center. The movie was playing. I had seen it before. The first time I came years ago, all they had was a slide show with narration but now it’s a great short movie (just under 20 min.) that was produced with the help of The History Channel. I walked around the small museum which is well done, and very informative. Every kiosk has a different story to tell. The more I read about the Revolutionary War, the more it reminds me of the Civil War. In the battle of Kings Mountain, the only regular British Soldier was Major Ferguson. The rest were local militia consisting of Americans still loyal to the

king of England. By 1780, the war was not going well for the Patriots, and it had been fought to a virtual stalemate. The British wanted to get the southern Loyalists organized, and then assist in the northern campaign to unbalance the stalemate in the Loyalist’s favor. During recruiting, Ferguson didn’t want the “Mountain Men” living in the Appalachian Mountains to interfere so he

threatened them with violence if they did – “he would march his army over the mountains, hang their leaders, and lay their country to waste with fire and sword”. This only made the “Mountain Men” mad so they joined the Patriots to fight the common enemy - Ferguson. The battle of Kings Mountain had many units consisting of these independent “Mountain Men” who were mostly responsible for the Patriot’s victory. The British would have been better off if they just left the “Mountain Men” alone. Commanding the Patriots are many familiar names like: Shelby, Sevier, McDowell, Winston, Campbell and Cleveland. Many are now names of local towns, and counties. This area is rich in history for both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. It was a beautiful sunny winter day. Once on the trail, I noticed that they repaved it with the rubberized asphalt used in high school tracks. They also have a number to dial so that the narrative could be listened to on a cell phone. As I walked, I passed a man who was listening to the narrative on his phone. It’s a great way to relive history. I stopped to take a few pictures as I walked. On October 7, 1930, President Herbert Hoover came to the park for the sesquicentennial celebration of the battle. Over 70,000 people crowded into the small park. There is a small monument showing the place where Hoover stood to give his speech, and inside the museum are some photos showing the mass of humanity that surrounded him. There are also two large monuments (the U.S. Monument,

and the Centennial Monument) along the trail. The writings on them tell the story of the battle, and how important it was to the Patriot’s cause in the war. It took me a little over a half hour to walk the trail. It’s always a good workout and you never know who you’ll meet along the way. If you are ever near Kings Mountain, schedule a stop to visit the battlefield site. It will make you proud to be an American, and also very thankful to the men who fought for and won our freedom.

By: Wally Wersching On Saturday, February 11th, the “Warriors For Christ” chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA) held their annual “Run For The Son” breakfast fundraiser at the Carolina Chicken & More in Gaffney, South Carolina between 7AM and 10:30AM. “Warriors for Christ” is one of the newest chapters of the CMA. The members have been working very hard to become a sanctioned part of the CMA. I’ve known Roger, the president, and his wife, Carolyn, for many years. I consider them good friends. While I was there, we talked about the CMA, and what happens to the money collected. After the bill is paid for all the food cooked, 60% of the money raised goes to the CMA for distribution to their many worthwhile causes, and the rest stays with the local chapter. This fundraiser is the only one each year where some of the money stays with the local chapter. All other fundraising events during the year are for charities – not the local chapter. The CMA was started in 1975 by one man. It now has thousands of members with outreaches in more than thirty countries around the world. If you have not been to a CMA event, it’s a lot of fun. After I finished eating, I walked outside to talk with Roger. It appeared that the fundraiser would be successful with more and more people coming in. Some of the bikers were going to another event in Shelby later in the

morning. I learned that it was a memorial run for Markie Boris – a young man who had just died. I planned on attending, too, even though I didn’t know him. I headed up Rt 18 to Shelby, and the Landmark Baptist Church – the meeting place for Markie’s memorial run. I was told that it would be leaving the church at noon so I arrived at about 11:15. I was the only one there so I parked, and waited. At about 11:30, two Gaston County Sheriff motorcycle cops rode in. We talked for a while as we all waited for the rest to arrive. When Markie Boris was born, doctors told his parents, Mark and Maggie Boris, he wouldn’t live past two years old. His heart had six defects, and was in the middle of his chest instead of on the left. Markie lived to become a student at Crest Middle School, and his father was a detective with the Shelby Police Department. Markie had more than 20 heart surgeries. Some of the latest were at the Boston Children’s Hospital. His parents moved to Boston to be closer to the heart specialists. Markie’s favorite saying was “Don’t Worry, I’ve Got This”. He was a remarkable young man who loved motorcycles, and the people who rode them. He lived to be 16 years old before he lost his fight for life. Other bikers began to arrive. Some I knew, and others I didn’t - but quickly

became acquainted. There were members of many local biker ministries along with a few of the local clubs. It was a normal outpouring of love by the biker community for a young man. Many of the people were wearing t-shirts that they got at some of the fundraisers for Markie’s many operations. They were bright red, and had “Don’t Worry, I’ve Got This” printed on the back. Markie’s parents drove in along with his grandparents. There was a lot of emotion as they were greeted by the bikers who knew them. The father brought Markie’s ashes so that he could be part of the event, too. The parking lot was filling fast as 1:00PM approached – the time that was scheduled for the service. The last group to arrive was the Windjammers, from Shelby. There were about 50 bikers, and a half a dozen cop cars and bikes. After all, Mark (Markie’s dad) had been a Shelby policeman. Preacher gathered everyone around, and said a prayer before leaving. The plan was to ride about a mile to the Putnam Baptist Church to have a memorial service for Markie, and then have a free meal. One of the bikers loaned Mark his bike so that he could ride in the run. Mark and Markie’s younger brother led the ride behind the two motorcycle cops, then the rest of the bikes and cars. It was a pretty long line of roaring motorcycles as they left. After I watched them leave, I headed home. Cindy was back from shopping so we went out for a delicious lunch in Boiling Springs, NC. It was an eventful day.

Crumpler’s Custom Cycle Automotive Shop Crumpler’s has been a family automotive business for as long as it’s been open. Of course, they like tradition, but they also like the freshness that new ideas bring to the table. That’s why, back in 2011, when Richie’s son Richard “George” said he was interested in working on motorcycles, Richie decided to expand into having a custom cycle shop. a chance to make something new happen at the place and to blaze his own trail. He’d spent countless hours in the shop learning and working and when he suggested a new idea for the business, his dad was happy to give him the green light. Since that time the shop has grown to handle all kinds of custom work plus repair and service work. “We don’t just work people’s bikes in and shuffle them out, what we do isn’t about that”, George said. “What we want to do is try to fit the bike to exactly what the owner wants.” Because of this, the Crumpler’s sell wheels, do custom paint jobs, add chrome accessories, and do performance work. The beauty of this line of work is the variety. George and the shop manager Allen Bass work on anything from classic bikes to more current models, although each presents its own challenges always. “We love piecing the puzzle together and getting a great finished product to the owner”, George said. Although the shop is known for variety, they still do their fair share of service and repair work. They also work on wrecked bikes. They also head out to shows as often as possible to see all what’s new in the industry “What I can’t see is getting sick of this”, Richard noted “It’s my passion and I love making everything run the best that I can.” If you’re a true motorcycle lover, you won’t want to miss Crumpler’s Custom Cycles Open House on Saturday April 1st! Story and photo by Alan Dockery There was a little sadness at the Easyriders Bike Show for some folks. One of the many motorcycles was there barely a week after the owner was buried. Robert Shane Newman, of Elkin, NC, passed away just before this year’s show. But y’all know the best buddies also ride and will do what they can for you. So, a couple of Shane’s friends made sure his bike was in the show. Mark Cheek of Little Rebel Customs, and Rocky Bryant from Swan Creek, NC, hauled the bike to Charlotte. “I built this bike for Shane to enter in last year’s Easyriders Bike Show,” Mark said. “He didn’t want to ride it until the show. But it snowed us out and lots of folks couldn’t make it to Charlotte. Last year he rode the bike and showed in a couple of local shows taking two best in show trophies.” The first time I got to check out the bike that started as a 2009 1200 Sportster was at the Tilley H-D Statesville Summer Bash. Being a long-time race car fan I loved the paint job, done locally by Peter Weber. “Shane had already registered for this year’s Easyriders Bike Show. One of his biggest goals was to have a bike in this show. So, we brought his bike,” Mark said. “He will be missed. He was a good guy who grew up here, loved his family, and took care of his grandparents. He loved motorcycles and cars. He loved Sportsters. He was a big guy, 350 pounds, but loved his Sportsters. He also loved to cook and eat.” I knew the unique paint scheme had to be someone who loved Ford GT-40 race cars in the old Gulf Oil colors. Shane told Mark, “I want a Sportster and gonna leave the build up to you, but it’s gotta be in the Gulf GT-40 paint scheme”. Now those colors will remind me of Shane, too.

Bros &Bro-ettes A lot of people are stuck in their own little world and we think everything is just fine and dandy. We think what we say and do is OK. BUT what would Jesus think? If someone says or does something you don’t like, how do you react? I don’t know about you, but sometimes my reactions and sayings aren’t pleasing to God. Just like the other day a homeless guy came in to the mission that I have gotten close to and I fixed him something to eat and he said I’m going back to my campsite and enjoy the nice weather, he wasn’t gone 5 minutes and someone jumped him and beat him up pretty bad. I know that the thoughts going around in my head weren’t pleasing to God, but I had to ask God for forgiveness. Thank the Lord, we have a loving and forgiving God. If you are saved and the Lord speaks to you about helping someone or even going somewhere, how would you react? Would you refuse and act like Jonah? He didn’t want to go and do like the Lord asked him to do and he ended up being swallowed up by a whale! I don’t think we’ll end up in a big ole fish’s belly, but it could be worse. If the Lord asks us to do something we should do it, because we don’t want to think we are OK, we want to know. Most people think they are OK with their standings with God. Mike Beland AMRA 2016 Top Fuel Champ

Mike Beland, Maiden, NC, is the American Motorcycle Racing Association 2016 Top Fuel Champion. Growing up in rural Western Massachusetts, Mike was an active guy and eager to take on the world. Two weeks after high school he was in Marine Corp Basic Training, and subsequently served for six years. After a few years working on cars and trucks at a dealership, Mike started his own business, A1 Cycles. For several years, he enjoyed the South Florida sunshine in West Palm Beach growing the reputation of A1 Cycles. Twenty-one years later and the shop is now in the Carolina foothills. Mike has an impressive custom and racing bike resume. His award-winning show bikes have been featured on the cover of five national magazines. He has done six pilot shows for Speed Channel and been featured on “Pinks” and “Pinks All Out.” He has also been on Air Talent for “Pass Time” and “Pinks All Out 2016.” Mike has been in several documentaries on the National Geographic and Travel Channel. For a few years in the mid-1990’s Mike drag raced in the Super Comp Bike Class at New England Dragway finishing in the top ten each year. Then he raced a few years on the local dirt track taking several class titles. From 2000 to 2005 he ran AMA Pro Flat Track earning a national expert license and competing in lots of main feature races aboard a Harley-Davidson. The current AMRA Top Fuel champ got back on the drag strip in 2006 for local bracket racing in Palm Beach. A couple years ago, Mike felt the need for nitromethane. He attended Johnny Vickers’ Hawaya Racing Pro

Fuel School and graduated at the top of his class. In 2015 he quickly earned Top Fuel licenses in both the International Hot Rod Association and the National Hot Rod Associations. In his first season, he won a race at Sonoma. CA. For 2016 Mike got real serious as he joined the Danny Johnson team riding one of the best machines in the country, thanks to his sponsor Shield Bright and associate sponsor Raising Hail Racing by David Wild. The Top Fuel Harley Mike rode is an incredible bike with a D.J. chassis holding a 182 cubic inch engine with a two-speed Lenco transmission and 14” wide rear slick. That slick takes a beating as it tries to put more than 1,000 horsepower from three gallons of nitro per pass to the track. Mike did well all season, winning the AMRA Bowling Green, Kentucky, race on the way to the association championship. Look for him at the drag strip in 2017 as he goes after the IHRA and the NHRA titles, too. Like all racers, Mike can use sponsors. PGR Mission For William Franklin Earwood WWII USMC By Wally Wersching William Franklin (Frank) Earwood 92, of Old Charles Road in Shelby, NC passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Peak Resources in Cherryville. He was born in Cleveland County, on July 29, 1924. When WWII broke out, he was just a boy but he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, and served in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned home to live a long fruitful life with many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was well thought of by his friends and relatives as a happy man who brought joy to everyone he touched. Frank loved to travel, and had visited every state but Alaska. The funeral service was held at 4 PM, on Friday, at StameyTysinger Funeral Home Chapel, in Fallston, NC. The entombment followed the service in the Rose Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum, Fallston. The Patriot Guard Riders were invited to participate in the services for Frank. I received the email notification on Thursday, January 19th. I wanted to be there to honor Frank so I checked the weather for Friday. It was supposed to be rain in the morning, and overcast the rest of the day with temps in the 50’s. I decided to wear warm clothes, and go – rain or shine. I arrived at the funeral home at about 2:30PM in the afterW W W .T H E G A R A G E A T R AY P R I C E . C O M

noon. There were a few other PGR members already there. There was another service going on so we waited until it was over before we staged our bikes on the other side of the home – ready to escort Frank to his final resting place. Then we placed a few flags in front of the home at the sidewalk to show everyone coming to visit that a veteran was being honored. We initiated the flag line in front of the main door to the chapel at 3PM when the visitation was to start with two PGR members at the door. As we stood there with our flags, we were thanked by many of the people who came to visit. There was a slow but steady stream of visitors coming to pay their respects to Frank’s relatives. Between the visitors, we had time to talk amongst ourselves. We discussed many topics one of which was where we wanted to be buried when we died. I guess it was an appropriate subject because of the reason we were there. For me, I want to be cremated, and buried in the Veteran’s cemetery in Black Mountain, NC. It’s a beautiful place. Others wanted their ashes scattered. Everyone’s wishes were a little different. When the service for Frank started, we stood down from the flag line, removed the flags from the front of the home, and waited for the flag covered casket to be loaded into the hearse. When Frank came out of the home, we all saluted until he was placed into the hearse. Then we hurried to our bikes to escort Frank to the Rose Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum – just about a mile down the road from the funeral home. When we arrived at the cemetery, the honor guard was waiting for Frank. We formed our flag line next to them. We saluted again as Frank was moved into the Mausoleum. We stood in honor as his family and friends went into the building. From where I was standing, I couldn’t see exactly what was going on inside. I saw the white hats of the honor guard moving around. I know that sometime during the service, the flag

that was draped over Frank was solemnly folded into the tight triangle. Then it was presented by a kneeling member of the honor guard to Frank’s wife. Then, the honor guard fired the three volleys, and played Taps on a trumpet. Whenever I hear Taps, I get a little emotional. The finality of the service sets in - that there is the body of a good man inside the casket – a Marine. I am always moved by the playing of Taps. It brings back memories of all the veterans who never made it home. The 3-volley salute is a ceremonial act performed at military funerals as part of the drill and ceremony of the Honor Guard. It consists of a rifle party firing blank cartridges into the air three times. It could be any number of riflemen. I have been to funerals where there was only a single rifleman firing the three volleys. The custom originates from the European dynastic wars, where the fighting ceased so the dead and wounded could be removed. Then, three shots were fired into the air to signal that the battle could resume. The three-volley salute should not be confused with the 21-gun salute (or 19-gun or 17-gun, etc.) which uses a battery of artillery pieces. When the honor guard was picking up their spent brass, we dissolved the flag line. We walked to the van and placed the flags into the flag bag. Then we all walked to our bikes, talked for a brief minute or two, and went home. Although there wasn’t a large group of PGR members, we were there to honor Frank for service to his country. Until we can honor the next passing veteran, we will stand ready.

Bike Safe – North Carolina

By: Wally Wersching About five years ago, I attended a free session of the Bike Safe-NC program. I’m always looking for ways to improve my riding skills so I contacted them through their website www.BikeSafeNC.com, and registered for a class in Hendersonville, NC. The Bike Safe program was started in London, England to cut down on their high motorcycle accident rate. After holding the Bike Safe classes, the accident rate dropped significantly. They are still holding classes in London. The North Carolina Highway Patrol saw this, and wanted it for North Carolina bikers hoping that it could reduce motorcycle accidents in North Carolina as it did in London. They tried it in Wake County during 2007 and 2008, and it worked. Then in 2009, they went state-wide, and have shown a drop in motorcycle fatalities. The class was June 15th, 2012 at 8:45AM in Hendersonville,

NC. I found the Hendersonville City Operations Building, the location for the class, and parked in the lot. After a few minutes, Officer Keith Quinn pulled up. I learned that he was from Gastonia, and would be my assessor during the class. He seemed very friendly, but I was still wary because he was a police officer, and all my encounters with the police have not been much fun. The rest of the class’s participants came, and we went into the building. The class started with Lieutenant Mike Visely as the instructor, and the six of us listening attentively. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and open about his experiences on the road as a motorcycle officer. There was a very interesting slide presentation. It differed from the MSF presentation with the showing of fatal crashes. We talked about how they happened, and how they could have

been avoided. The Bike Safe Program works on real world situations on the road, and in traffic. It’s the next step in the learning progression from the MSF class. I can see where it helps. It helped me. You’re never too old to learn. Then it was time for the riding part of the class. There were two riding portions where the assessor follows you, and watches every move you make and then grades you on it. We went out following a couple more sets of students and officers. I followed as though we were in a group. In essence, I played “follow the leader” throughout the ride. I was very nervous, made a few mistakes, and Keith saw them all. After the ride, we stopped for lunch. Keith and I talked about the morning’s ride, and how I could improve. We also got more acquainted, and I became more relaxed around him. We went back to the classroom for more of the presentation and discussion. It was very informative. Then it was time for the longer riding session. Keith and I went out alone. I was worried about missing the arrows painted on the street showing the route, but I really had no problem. I was much more relaxed, and with nobody to follow, I took my own path through the turns. It was more fun than the morning ride. After we got back to the classroom, Keith told me that I got all “Ones” the best I could have gotten. I corrected all the errors of the morning ride. We went into the classroom, and I got my Certificate. I’m hoping that by taking the class, I’ll be a safer rider, and maybe even get a discount on my motorcycle insurance. It was definitely worth the effort. I met some new people, and learned from men who ride for a living. Everything was as specified in the brochure, and on the website. I’d recommend this to anybody who rides. If it is not available in your state, contact your Highway Patrol, and ask them to initiate it. It works! It’s been five years, and I’m registered for another class in April. I feel that I should get a refresher course. I’m not getting any younger, and can use all the help I can get. It would be a great club outing where everybody learns something.

Horrified, the golfer got his water bottle from his bag and poured it over the little guy, reviving him. “Arrgh! What happened?” the Leprechaun asked. “I’m afraid I hit you with my golf ball,” replied the golfer. “Oh, I see. Well, ye got me fair and square. Ye get three wishes, so whaddya want?” “Thank God, you’re all right!” the golfer answered in relief. “I don’t want anything, I’m just glad you’re OK, and I apologize.” With that, the golfer walked off without saying another word. “What a nice guy,” the Leprechaun says to himself. “I have to do something for him. How many times a week?” Blushing even more, the golfer looks around then whispers, “Once, sometimes twice a week.” “What??” responds the Leprechaun in shock. “That’s all? Only once or twice a week?” “Well,” says the golfer, “I figure that’s not bad for a Catholic priest in a small parish.”

The Irish cop takes out his baton and starts beating the living sh!t out of the lawyer and says, “Daeye want me to stop or just slow down?”

Wal-Mart and was about to check out. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So, since I’m retired, with little to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, and that I was starting the Gravy Train Diet again. Although I probably shouldn’t, because I’d ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Gravy Train nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no; I stepped off a curb to pee on a truck tire and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard!

While reading an article last night about fathers and sons, memories came flooding back to the time I took me son out for his first pint. Off we went to our local pub only two blocks from the cottage. I got him a Guinness. He didn’t like it, so I drank it. Then I got him a Kilkenny’s. He didn’t like that either, so I drank it. By thet time I realized he just didn’t. Finally, I thought he might like some Harp Lager. He didn’t, I drank it. I thought maybe he’d like whiskey better than beer so we tried a Jameson’s. Nope! Drank it for him. In desperation, I had him try that rare Redbreast, Ireland ‘s finest. He wouldn’t even smell it. What could I do but drink it. By the time I realized he just didn’t like to drink, I was so smashed I could hardly push his stroller back to the cottage! Two priests decided to go to Hawaii on vacation. They were determined to make this a real vacation by not wearing anything that would identify them as clergy. As soon as the plane landed they headed for a store and bought some really outrageous shorts, shirts, sandals, sunglasses, etc. The next morning they went to the beach dressed in their ‘tourist’ garb. They were sitting on beach chairs, enjoying a drink, the sunshine and the scenery when a ‘drop dead gorgeous’ blonde in a topless bikini came walking straight towards them. They couldn’t help but stare. As the blonde passed them she smiled and said “Good Morning, Father ~ Good Morning, Father,” nodding and addressing each of them individually, then she passed on by. They were both stunned. How in the world did she know they were priests? So, the next day, they went back to the store and bought even more outrageous outfits. These were so loud you could hear them before you even saw them! Once again, in their new attire, they settled down in their chairs to enjoy the sunshine. After a little while, the same gorgeous blonde, wearing a different colored topless bikini, taking her sweet time, came walking toward them. Again she nodded at each of them, and said “Good morning, Father ~ Good morning, Father,” and started to walk away. One of the priests couldn’t stand it any longer and said, “Just a minute, young lady.” “Yes, Father?” “We are priests and proud of it, but I have to know, how in the world do you know we are priests, dressed as we are?” She replied, “Father, it’s me, - Sister Kathleen.”
