ell, it’s March and everyone is smiling as they set out for Daytona’s 75th Annual Spring Rally. And they rightly should be. According to all indications and the Souvenir Biker’s Pocket Guide it is going to be a doozie! Go to www.BikersPocketGuide.com to preview the issue and drool over all the activities happening in Daytona Beach this year. Don’t forget to download to your phone while you are at it. Look in this issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for the most complete listing of events in both North and South Carolina. Nobody else even comes close. As is customary, the Cruisin’ Calendar explodes in the spring and if you are a benefit, charity, non-profit, or club, you can list your events for free. There is no way that you can beat our price (free), our circulation (20,000 copies monthly) or our two state (N & S Carolina) distribution, so just do it. It is easy and you can do it 24/7 online. I am very proud of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and I am amazed at delivery of every issue that we produce because it represents the efforts of all of our staff and the support of our advertisers and readers. Over the past 17 years we have printed and distributed over 4 million copies. Remember when McDonald’s signs told how many millions of burgers they served? While I am crowing, I want to mention the 18th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party And Oyster Roast. This year Rider’s In The Country in Randleman, NC hosted it. The weather was cold, but the parking lot was full. Many came in their cars and trucks, and that’s OK. They came and were a testimony to the biker spirit and we had a blast! We have to thank George Rider, The Karney Law Firm as a repeat sponsor of the oysters, H-D of Greensboro for the wings, Tim Nall of A & M Crane for cooking, Hayes Jewelers of Lexington, NC for the diamond heart pendant, Tracey Nester of Cupid’s Corner for sponsoring our bike games, and Jeanie Hood Carter and Mickey Carter of Bikers For Bikers Foundation for helping make it a large time. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to our staff and everyone who played a role in making this one of our biggest and best events. Spring is right around the corner and you know what that means? The Charlotte CBA Bike Show & Swap Meet. And, yes, if you looked on the cover, you read it right. After over 40 years, this may be the last show at the Metrolina Expo. And, yes, this is Easter Sunday, too. Cassius Fury Band will

rock our weekend party. We have a special ”No Hands Easter Egg Pick Up” for the ladies on both Saturday and Sunday. Eggs will have prizes inside, including candy, gift certificates to be used at our vendors, and we will have some real CASH - up to $300 each day. Remember the #1 rule is NO HANDS. This should be a lot of fun. Vendors and motorcycles will all be there waiting for you. This is our twice a year “family reunion” and good time. Come out and join us for what could be “our last hoorah” at this location. The Metrolina Expo may be history after June, but this won’t be our last show. We will just be having the Fall Show at a new location and possibly a new date, too. We will continue to work and produce the best Swap Meet and Bike Show possible. I love to talk to our vendors

and they tell me the Charlotte CBA show is the best show that they go to. That is because we have the best customers, best workers, and the best vendors. It takes all 3 to have a great show. We will announce the new location and new date at the March Show. Come on out and find some great deals on motorcycles, parts, clothes, and jewelry, and most importantly, meet old friends and make new friends. Don’t miss the last Metrolina Expo Show. The Fall Show will most likely be October 8 & 9, 2016 at the Park Expo (the old Merchandise Mart) on Independence Boulevard in Charlotte. We had looked at the Cabarrus Arena on Highway 49, north of Harrisburg. It is a very nice facility and I think would have been a great spot for our show. Their General Manager liked us and liked the idea of doing the show there. Last week he called to tell me that his bosses, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners, didn’t think “their facility would do our

show justice”. It seemed like kind of a nice way of saying they didn’t want us. I’ve been doing our shows for 44 years. If I didn’t think it would have been a good place for our show, I never would have asked about it. Please do me a favor. IF you live in Cabarrus County or in the surrounding counties, please contact the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners or the Cabarrus Arena and ask why we were not given the opportunity to consider renting the Arena. Be polite but show them that the bikers have a voice. Thank You! Remember, as always, the money from this event goes to help fund your legislative voice in Raleigh. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Fear Of February Party By: Mark Infield This year the official name of this party was the 18th Attempt, Almost A Tradition, Pre Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party and Oyster Roast. We hold this party in February every year as the kick off to riding season in the Carolinas. It gets this name from the fact that it is right before the Daytona 500, Valentine’s Day, and Daytona Spring Bike Week. We also state that sometimes the weather is bad, but the party is always great. We have had some really severe weather with snow, sleet, and wind in years past. This year it was only cold. And I mean cold. Temps were in the 20s as we began to set up the grill and the oyster barrel and the wind was swirling around the building at Rider’s In The Country. Thankfully, the sun was bright, the temperature began to rise and the wind laid down as the morning progressed. Tim Nall of A & M Crane Services got the grill going and started the first batch of wings, provided by HarleyDavidson of Greensboro, before the crowd arrived. The Karney Law Firm provided the oysters and Lincoln, Rick, Scott, and Allan manned the cooker dumping bushel after bushel out on the table for everyone to enjoy. Inside, George Rider had free hot dogs and chips for those who didn’t like oysters or wings. Fair Warning was playing all of our old favorites and it was warm in there. Renea and Caroline were selling raffle tickets for the diamond heart pendant from Hayes Jewelers in Lexington, NC and a 55” flat screen TV and event t-shirts. The deal of the day was an event t-shirt and 5 raffle tickets for $20.

Back outside a crowd had gathered to watch people compete in the “Hit ‘er in the $h!tt&r” contest sponsored by Tracey Nester of Cupid’s Corner. You just had to be there as there is no explanation that we can print here. There was a $50 cash prize and Tony Rocco ended up winning the hard way. Back inside Fair Warning took a break and it gave us a chance to crown the 2016 Fear Of February Chuggin’ Champions. We started off with 8 contestants in the male division. Tim, Billy, Daniel, and Lou advanced to the semi finals. In the ladies’ division there were 4 contestants in the first round. Only Leslie and Tonya survived. Leslie from Galax, VA took the win in the championship round. In the men’s division, Tim and Billy advanced to the finals and Tim from Randleman claimed bragging rights for 2016. Both Tim and Leslie were awarded beer mugs inscribed with “Screw it. Let’s have a beer” on the side. As is customary, the champions faced off in a battle of the sexes. Even though, in past years, we have had some ladies that really knew how to swallow a beer, Tim earned that honor for the men this year. Then Tim was challenged by Billy (runner up) and Cotton. Tim handily disposed of their threat to his prowess. After another set by Fair Warning it was time to give away the diamond heart pendant from Hayes Jewelers and the 55” flat screen TV. Point, was the winner. Her husband called it before we drew the ticket! We put her ticket back in the drawing for the TV. Now the big moment had arrived and someone was going to be watching the Daytona 500 on a new 55” flat screen TV. Drum roll, please. In a strange twist of fate, Tina from Archdale won the Grand Prize. She is one of the bartenders at Rider’s and she was given raffle tickets as a tip by someone who was unable to stay for the raffle! Easyriders 2016 Bike Show Tour

By: Mark Infield The Easyriders 2016 Bike Show in Charlotte, NC is the first event of the year here in the Carolinas. It is held at the Charlotte Convention Center and is a see and be seen event usually packed with vendors, custom bike entries, and entertainment. This year a bad storm rolled into the Carolinas on Thursday and dumped snow, ice, and freezing rain on us making the roads treacherous and in some cases impassable. That was the case for us here in the Triad and we had to make the call not to attend. few entries in the bike show not to mention vendors. Many of the people that worked the concession stands couldn’t make it to work, either. Everyone knows that no one can control the weather and that the show must go on. It is just a shame that it came at such an inconvenient time. In spite of the weather the show did go on, with over 120 bike entries and more than half of the vendors. Many of the celebrities were prevented from coming by airline cancellations and hazardous travel on the roads. John Shope (Dirty Bird Concepts), Geico Insurance, David Mann Art, Rusty Coones (Sons Of Anarchy), and The Purrfect Angelz were among those that faces travel problems and could not make it. Paul Yaffe finally made it to the show around 6 pm. The Fryed Brothers Band stepped up and played 5 sets to keep the 3000+ attendees tapping their toes and dancing all day. Indian Larry Motorcycles made it to the show and Eddie Calvert, winner of the 2015 Geico bike picked up his bike at this year’s show. Speaking of bike giveaways, Harley-Davidson of Charlotte in Matthews, The Law Offices Of Jason E. Taylor, and the Carolina Rider gave away a 2016 Custom H-D Street 500. Matthew Smith of Gastonia was the winner. Leah Hamilton, event coordinator for Easyriders Events, said, “The weather was not good for the attendance, but I am inspired by the show of support from the Charlotte area builders and the bike community. It was humbling.”

The Long Way Is The Best Way By Wally Wersching The place I used to work was about 10 miles from home. I could take NC 74 East, a four lane road, from Shelby to work with all the stoplights, traffic, and congestion associated with the morning rush hour. In fact, I did for a while. It was very hectic, and a little scary. Bumper to bumper between two semi’s is no fun. It seems like every other driver was in a hurry to make it to work on time. Some had a long ride to Charlotte, and tried to cut time off any way they could. Most were speeding, constantly changing lanes to get ahead, and talking on their phones! For safety reasons, I always left a distance to the vehicle in front. This enabled cars and trucks to cut in front of me. Sometimes, I had to brake because they would cut me off. To make things worse, depending on the season, we were looking into the blinding sun at different locations on the ride in. By the time I got to work, I was stressed. One day, it was so nice when I left work that I tried some back roads to get home instead of the four lane. I got lost, but eventually found my way home. There was almost no traffic, and the scenery was beautiful. I looked at a map, and determined the best route to take to get home. I tried it the next day, and this time didn’t get lost and I got home at about the same time as when I took NC 74 with all its traffic. The next morning, I rode the same route in reverse. It was beautiful. There were very few cars on the road. The trees that lined the road blocked most of the sun. When the sun was in my eyes, it was only for a short time because the road had many twists and turns. I decided to ride this longer way to work every day. After some time, I got to know the drivers that I’d see every morning. I’d wave, and they’d wave back. It reminded me of when I rode to Marion every day up route 226. People who ride on a two-lane road watch out for each other. There were also many children waiting for the school bus in the morning, and I waved at them, too. Many waved back. When I got to work, I was relaxed, and ready for work. On some really beautiful summer mornings, I would leave earlier, and take an even longer ride to work. It almost bordered on me not going to work at all, stopping at a pay phone, calling in sick, and taking the day off to ride to the mountains. There will be a day when I give in to these urges, and it will be great! There’s nothing like playing hooky from work, and riding all day. My advice to all who ride to work is to find a pleasant safe way to and from work. It may take a little longer, but who cares? When I ride my bike, I enjoy every minute, and never look at my watch. Riding can be fun even though you’re riding to work. Try it. I know you’ll like it.

Colorado Motorcycle Expo Shooting By: North Carolina Confederation Of Motorcycle Clubs 14 February 2016 -The North Carolina Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs (NCCOMC) is a bikers’ rights organization comprised of motorcycle clubs, biker ministries, and other motorcyclist rights organizations. As such, it is deeply concerned about the events surrounding the violence at the Colorado Motorcycle Expo in Denver, CO on January 30, 2016. Reports by the Associated Press and the Denver Post described a confrontation between the Mongols and Iron Order motorcycle clubs that resulted in at least one fatality and seven others being hospitalized. According to eyewitness Wade Eldridge, an attorney attending the Expo, a member of the Iron Order was holding a handgun and leaving the scene following shots being fired. The below photograph taken by a cell phone at the scene after the first shot was fired showing a member of the Iron Order holding a handgun and moving away from the crowd corroborates Eldridge’s account.

basement of the Expo. Eight to eleven Iron Order members, including Duran, were mad-dogging and taunting the Mongol members, and words were exchanged. An Iron Order member shoved a Mongol member, who then knocked that Iron Order member’s beer out of his hand. At this point an inebriated Duran produced a handgun, causing everyone to pause. When a Mongol then rushed Duran in an attempt to disarm him, Duran shot the Mongol in the chest, sending him to the hospital in critical condition. That gunshot sparked a fistfight, says Stubbs, which was won by The Mongols, who let the Iron Order members up off the ground in favor of tending to their wounded brother. The Iron Order members ascended the basement stairs. Duran then waved his gun at The Mongols below him, threatening to shoot them. It was then that Victor “Nubs” Mendoza rushed up the stairs and was shot and killed by Duran. An attorney for the Iron Order claims its members acted in self-defense.

The Denver Post identified the victim killed in the shooting as 46-year-old Victor Mendoza, who according to the Mongols’ attorney Stephen Stubbs, is a Mongols member, a husband, and a father, and is the gentleman standing in the middle of the photo wearing sunglasses. Also according to the Denver Post, the Iron Order MC has admitted that one of its members, later identified by the Colorado Department of Corrections as officer Derrick Duran, fired a shot at the Expo; but authorities investigating the incident have not yet determined whether Duran’s shot hit anyone. Duran has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation. On February 4, 2016 The Mongols held their first ever press conference. Stubbs, at that conference (as reported by Michael Roberts @ westwood.com) and in a later video statement published by him on 2/9/16 described what happened as told him by his clients and independent witnesses. He says The Mongols were selling t-shirts from a booth in the

In an Associated Press (AP) article the Iron Order insists it is a law-abiding club. Experts suggest otherwise. A 2014 report by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) contains accounts of the Iron Order’s involvement in a number of violent confrontations around the country. These include but are not limited to the shooting of a Black Pistons member in Florida, a gun battle with the Bandidos, a stabbing in South Carolina, and a brawl at a strip club in Baltimore. According to the AP, the ATF report says the club “infuriated” other motorcycle clubs by expanding into territories and taking colors already claimed by other clubs and by wearing a three-piece patch; all, according to Iron Order member and attorney John C. Whitfield, without asking permission. But Mongols attorney Stephen Stubbs, noting that other police clubs also wear three-piece patches without causing problems with other clubs, says in the AP article, “(I)t’s not about the patches. It’s about Iron Order living out its ‘Sons of Anarchy’ fantasy, starting fights and causing trouble.”

John Risenhoover, a former ATF agent who has investigated biker clubs, is quoted by the AP as saying, “(M)ost people who ride know not to pretend to be a one-percenter if you’re not truly a one-percenter. It’s a good way to get attacked. It’s like you’re out trying to pick a fight.” Corroborating the ATF’s report, Steve Cook, executive director of the Midwest Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigators Association, says in a February 2nd article in the Denver Post, “Probably the best way to put it in a nutshell is to say the Iron Order has been having problems with everybody.” In his video statement Stubbs says none of the Mongols involved in this incident had a gun on them. He further states, “In fact the Denver Police Department just today announced that they had possession of the three firearms that were used in the shooting. None of them belonged to The Mongols Motorcycle Club. None of them.” According to an article by the Denver Post on February 3rd no arrests had yet been made in the incident and there is no time-line on how long the police investigation will take. As of the date of this press release we are unaware of any arrests being made. The NCCOMC recognizes this is a fluid situation. All the facts are not in. We are not taking sides. Our aim is to shed light on this incident and to stay on top of it, and to do what we can to see that a full and fair investigation takes place, and justice served.

Having said that, the North Carolina Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs believes that a law-enforcement motorcycle club instigating confrontations with other motorcycle clubs, if true, is inconsistent with the mission of law enforcement officers and should never be condoned. Any off-duty officers found to have been involved in such incidents should not be protected by law enforcement agencies. All citizens should be governed by the same laws, without exception. The NCCOMC believes acts of violence and intimidation by law enforcement motorcycle clubs are a threat to all law-abiding citizens and undermine the public’s confidence in law enforcement agencies everywhere. By: Bill Gallaway Nothing gets the digestive juices rumbling like the mere mention of the Beacon Drive In. On Saturday, January 16th the Greenville, SC Chapter of Star Touring and Riding (FMI www.StarChapter352.com) took a short ride to Spartanburg, SC for the purpose of having a Plate–a-Plenty loaded with onion rings, chili and fries. The ride was a relatively short one due to the cooler weather, yet this was one of the more comfortable riding days. There were still 9 bikes and one cage that ventured out for a total of 13 riders and 2 guests that met in Greer for the 20-mile ride to Spartanburg, SC. A lot of folks say this drive–in is on their bucket list. I don’t think it’s going anywhere soon as it’s been around longer than I have. It was founded in 1946 serving Plates-a-Plenty for a reasonable price. After lunch, those that could move took a ride on scenic SC 417 before returning home for the day to find their antacids.

By: Trisha Beasley Cumberland County Southern Riders had an awesome party on Saturday, January 30, 2016. The party was to recognize a couple of important Cumberland County Chapter members. The evening started off with the salute of “Old Dixie”. The clubhouse was beaming with pride as they sang in unison. All members were standing at attention with respect and admiration as the anthem was sung with honor and delight. This was the first round of acknowledgements as the night got underway. Following the anthem of “Old Dixie”, the members joined for a toast to their Vice President, Bonk. The toast to signify his departure to places unknown where he will be furthering our interests. The individual members paid their homage to Bonk for all the wonderful times they have had and to those that will come upon his return to the Cumberland Chapter. Wishes of God Speed were issued to him from everyone at the party. Hugs adorn in admiration, tears of the bittersweet moment at hand, and the solace of “Brotherhood” warmed everyone’s

hearts! It was certainly decided and discussed that a party will be in the works as soon as Bonk returns to the Cumberland Chapter. And, the last honorable mention was that of the Cumberland Chapter’s President, Sly, as the evening also acted as a celebration of Sly’s 52nd birthday. The crowd was please to present him with many stories of good times and birthdays past as well as making some new stories that very night. The club was full and the celebrations moving forward as some brothers joined in a harmonious performance of the well noted song, “Happy Birthday Mr. President”. Of course, the gentlemen singing were not as endowed as the infamous Marilyn Monroe but that did not stop the show. Mr. President noted that the performance was worthy of a little skin. So the brothers, leading the rendition, bared their chest in jest. Meanwhile, Mr. President was quick to recant and let them know, while their efforts were much appreciated, they were no comparison to Marilyn! And with that comment, the club was clambered with laughter and the performers covered their chests. All in accord for a final chant of, “Happy Birthday Mr. President!” The entire night was full of laughter, celebration, and camaraderie as is always the case! Everyone was reminded of the monthly support meetings and requested that each person come out to support their local Southern Riders Motorcycle Club. There were also announcements about the upcoming festivities; the Cumberland County Southern Riders Motorcycle Club’s 31st year anniversary as well as the annual spring party, both of which are right around the corner. The SRMC of Cumberland County extends a warm welcome to all in attendance.

By: Wally Wersching It was late October 2004 when I first heard about Marybell. I saw an ad in the local classifieds that stated “Old motorcycle for sale – 124 Sleeping Bear Lane, Busick, NC”. I remembered Busick was located on NC Hwy. 80 just north of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a very small mountain community. I decided to take a ride up there the next Saturday. If nothing else, I’ll enjoy the ride in the mountains. It was a pleasant day in the mid-50’s with plenty of sun. The color was almost gone from the trees but was still a very nice ride. It took me some time to locate 124 Sleeping Bear Lane. It was an old farmhouse at the end of a gravel road. I rode up the deeply rutted driveway, walked onto the weathered unpainted porch, and knocked on the old wooden screen door. A man in his 80’s wearing a pair of dirty and torn bib overalls with only one strap over his shoulders opened the door. With a growl, he asked me “What the hell do you want?” I showed him a copy of the ad, and asked if I could see the “old motorcycle” he had for sale. He warmed up immedi-

ately, and said: “You’re here to see Marybell.” I didn’t know what he was talking about, but I followed him to a small weather beaten shed next to the barn. With a little effort, he opened the door. The hinges were very rusty, and didn’t want to move. He walked into the shed, and removed the cover from the motorcycle. Dust engulfed the inside of the shed. Each particle was highlighted in the bright sunlight coming through the opened door. After a few seconds, I could see the motorcycle. To my astonishment, it was a 1965 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. The tires were flat, and the bike was dusty but it was all there. It was beautiful! (The 1965 Harley was the last year of the Panhead engine, and the first year of the electric start. It had the best of both, and was very rare.) My eyes must have gotten as big as saucers. With a smile, the old man asked if I liked Marybell. I said yes definitely. He didn’t want to sell her but he had to sell the farm and where he was going there would be no place

for Marybell. I walked around Marybell looking closely at her. Someone spent a lot of time restoring her. Everything was just like it came from the factory forty years ago. I introduced myself, and learned his name was Jed Wilson. The motorcycle belonged to his grandson Josh. Jed invited me to sit on the porch for a while as he told me about Josh and Marybell. Larry, Josh’s dad, bought Marybell new in 1965, and named it after a girlfriend he had in high school. He rode it for over twenty years until in 1986, a drunk driver ran him and Marybell off the road. The wreck killed Larry, and all but destroyed Marybell. Josh was only fourteen at the time, and Marybell was all he had left of his father. Josh decided to bring the pile of broken motorcycle parts back to life. He saved all his spending money, and hunted everywhere to find parts to replace the ones broken in his dad’s crash. It took him almost two years to get Marybell back on the road. When Josh was sixteen, Marybell was roadworthy but was still missing some of her parts. Most of Josh’s friends had crotch rockets and choppers. They teased Josh about Marybell being too heavy and slow. Josh didn’t mind going slower. He really loved Marybell, and the feeling he got when he was riding her. Josh rode Marybell regularly all the while looking for the parts that would make her perfect. Marybell seemed to appreciate the effort. She never broke down even though some

of her parts were badly worn. Everyone in town could hear the slow mellow tones of Marybell as she climbed the hills. Josh had her just about perfect when he disappeared. He went hunting one fall day, and was never seen again. They found his truck but never found him, even after weeks of intense searching. That was ten years ago. Marybell has been sitting in the shed ever since waiting for Josh to ride her again. That was Marybell’s story. Jed and I talked some more about his farm, and where he was going to live. Then it came time to ask the all-important question: how much was he asking for Marybell? It was a very rare find in exceptional condition. The only drawback was that she had been in that shed under that cover for ten years. A lot can happen to the insides of any motor vehicle that sits for a long time. The repair cost can be very expensive. I asked Jed the question, and he told me to make an offer. I always offer low so we can negotiate to what he really wants for it. I offered him $1,000 for Marybell. I almost fell off the chair when he said OK. The only stipulation was that I keep her original, and ride her regularly. That was no problem. I love riding old Harleys, and it would be a sacrilege to modify one in such perfect condition. He wouldn’t take any money down. He said that she was mine when I came for her. I was there with my El Camino the next day. I brought an air tank to inflate Marybell’s tires so they’ll roll up the ramp more easily onto the back of the El Camino. and wished him well. He was a very sad, and lonely man. He really missed Josh. I thought that he was going to cry when I pulled away with Marybell. When I got her home, I carefully unloaded her, and rolled her into the garage. I wiped her down to see that the black and white paint was still perfect along with all her chrome - no pits or rust anywhere. The next thing was to drain all her fluids. Petroleum based fluids like gas, oil, brake fluid, etc. turn toxic after a few years. In their toxic state, they can eat through metal causing holes in the carburetor, gas tank and even the engine. The first thing I did was to drain the gas from the tank. Gas will stink, and turn brown and gummy after a short time. This clogs up everything. To my surprise, the gas came out smelling fresh, and was clear. I drained the carb, and there was no deterioration. It looked as if she was parked a week ago – not ten years. The next thing was to try and turn her over. Sometime engines get rusty, and freeze up when stored. With a slight push down on the kick-starter, I knew that Marybell’s engine was as free as when it left the factory, forty years ago. Next was the engine oil. Again, Marybell surprised me. Her oil was clean, like it had just been changed. The same with the transmission fluid, front fork oil, and even the brake fluid was clean when I bled the rear brake. I had never seen the fluids this well preserved in a vehicle that was stored for so long.

After all the fluids were changed, I checked the battery. It was dead. Normally I would have bought a new battery because motorcycle batteries don’t last over four or five years - much less over ten. But Marybell was definitely different. I charged the battery, and it took a charge. The next thing was to fire her up. I set the choke, and hit the starter button. The engine whirred a few times then she fired! It was a beautiful sound. I think the Panhead is the best sounding engine Harley ever made. It is very quiet mechanically with a mellow soft exhaust tone. It was as if I had died, and gone to Harley rider heaven. Marybell was amazing! After over ten years she ran perfectly. I took it for a short ride to check everything out. She was ready for the road. She seemed eager to go, too. It was like she was just waiting for Josh to hop on, hit the starter button, and go. I decided to take a ride up to Busick to show old Jed the bike the next nice Saturday. I was sure that he would like to see her back on the road. It wasn’t until Thanksgiving weekend when I got a chance to go. When I got to Jed’s farm, it was all boarded up. He was gone. I stopped at the general store on Rt. 80, and they said that he had moved to a home somewhere on the “flat lands” near Charlotte. The proprietor and some of his customers followed me out to Marybell. They asked if it was Marybell. I said that I had bought it from Jed, and had just got her back on the road. They were glad to see her again. They all had good things to say about Josh and Marybell. It was such a nice day that I thought I’d take the long way home, and ride some of the back roads up in the mountains. Marybell seemed to really like the mountains again. As we rounded one turn she didn’t respond, and went straight for the ditch. It took all I could do to keep from laying her down. Something stopped her from turning. All the way home, I rode really slow just in case her steering got hung up again. Luckily it didn’t. Once I got home, I checked the steering head bearings. After pulling it apart, I saw that there was nothing wrong with the bearings, the race, or any of the steering mechanism. It must have been maybe something in the road – a rut or something that I hadn’t seen. I didn’t go back during the winter. The mountains can get very cold and icy which is no place to be riding a motorcycle. I just rode around the Shelby area until spring. Spring didn’t come too soon. It was a mid-April Saturday. The sun was out, and spring had sprung with all the dogwoods and azaleas in bloom. I knew that it was still winter in the mountains but warm enough for a bundled-up ride. I took Marybell up Rt. 80 out of Marion. She loved the twisties, and we climbed all the way to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I decided that as long as I was close, I would try to find out why she almost wrecked in the fall. I rode down the same road, and took it real slow where she didn’t turn before. There were no ruts in the road, but Marybell still would not turn, so I pulled off the road, and noticed a footpath going into the woods. It was a little over-grown but still passable. I took my camera, and started hiking up the trail. It went out Continued On Page 43

Continued From Page 40 into a beautiful valley. It was a clear cloudless sky, and the sun was intense. The leaves had not made their spring appearance yet but the view was still awe-inspiring. I paused for a few moments taking pictures when something caught my eye. It was something bright orange, way down in the valley. It was up in the trees flapping in the breeze. I couldn’t tell what it was but I took a picture of it so I could blow it up on the computer when I got home. I walked back to Marybell, hit the starter, put her in gear, and headed home. The steering seemed fine. It only acted up on that particular road at that particular spot. It was very strange! When I got home, I pulled up the picture on the computer, and enlarged it. The bright-orange object was a hunter’s vest. There was also a shadow that looked like a person in a tree stand. It wasn’t hunting season so I thought that it must be something else. The next weekend, I rode Marybell up to the mountains again, and I stopped at the ranger station. I showed the ranger the printout of the enlargement. He was concerned, and asked where it was. I told him the whole situation with Marybell, and explained how to get to the place where I took the picture. He took my name and number, and said he’d look into it. A couple weeks passed, and the ranger called. He told me that when they finally got down to where the bright orange vest was, they discovered some skeletal remains in a tree stand. It was identified by dental records to be Josh Wilson, Marybell’s long time owner who had been missing for over ten years. WOW! Did Marybell really know where he was? Was that the reason for the steering problems – to make me stop and look? This reminds me of Steven King’s “Christine” but without the evil twist. I went out to the garage, and told Marybell that Josh was found. I felt funny talking to her that way but I also thought that she understood. While I was on the phone with the ranger, I asked where

Jed was living. I wanted to stop by with Marybell, and talk with him for a while. He said that he was living just south of Winston-Salem at an assisted living home. I decided to go visit him the next nice Saturday. When I got there, I asked for Jed at the desk. The nurse seemed uneasy when I asked for him. I asked her if there was a problem with him. She said that he was really depressed, and the doctors didn’t think he’d last very long. Then she showed me to his room. Once in his room, I noticed that he had really changed since the last time we visited. He looked much older, and his color was almost gray. He had heard about finding Josh’s remains from the ranger. I told him the whole story about Marybell’s steering problems, and how I saw the bright orange vest. I also told him that Marybell was outside in the parking lot. He wanted to see her, so I wheeled him outside. A big smile got on his face when he saw her. He leaned over to touch her seat in almost a caressing motion. He talked to her in a low voice that I couldn’t hear, then told her goodbye. I wheeled him back to his room. He was talking all the time about Josh and Marybell and their escapades – like they happened yesterday instead of over ten years ago. I stayed for about an hour, and he talked my ear off about Josh and Marybell. They must have really been something in their day. I said goodbye, and rode Marybell home. A couple weeks later, the nurse from the rest home called me. She told me that Jed had passed away in his sleep the night before. She also said that he had seemed more at peace since my visit. I went out to the garage to tell Marybell about Jed. When I did, a drop of oil slowly ran down from her head gasket. It seemed like a tear. Was Marybell crying? She had known Jed for over 40 years.

By: Ron Climer If you like to have a destination when you go ride your motorcycle, consider Chimney Rock State Park near Lake Lure, North Carolina. It is located in Rutherford County approximately 25 miles southeast of Asheville just off of NC 64 The state park has a $13 entrance fee for adults. There is a huge waterfall and the view from Chimney Rock is like you were flying. I assume you brought a picnic lunch with you, but if not, there are plenty of restaurants in Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. It is hard to get to Chimney Rock State Park without riding on pretty cool motorcycle roads. Go home by a different route. Getting there and getting home will certainly be half the fun on this trip. Remember; a bad day riding your bike is better than a good day at work.

Buyer Beware! By: Wally Wersching With the coming of warm weather, many people are getting into motorcycling - some for the first time, and others getting back into motorcycling after many years. The first thing that should be done is schedule a motorcycle safety class to learn (or relearn) the correct way to ride safely. Many dealerships offer motorcycle safety courses or you can go to www.msf-usa.org to locate a class in your area. Most courses supply a motorcycle so you don’t need your own bike to get a motorcycle endorsement (M) on your license. This is imperative to your safety, and longevity on your motorcycle. The next thing is buying a bike of your own. You need to determine the type of riding you will be doing. Shop around. Go to many different dealers, and try on as many bikes as you can get your leg over. Some dealers might even let you take one for a test ride as long as you have that “M” on your license. Once you have decided which type of bike fits you best, you have to decide how much money you want to spend. This will determine whether you buy a used or new motorcycle. In my opinion, it’s better to pay cash for a used bike than getting in debt over your head for a new one. You may not want to get yourself into any serious debt, and be paying for the bike for the next five to eight years. There are advantages and disadvantages to both new and used. I’ve bought both new and used, and have had good luck with both. I’ve heard of some horror stories of buying used, and the same about buying new. Let’s talk more about buying a used bike because there is an abundance of used bikes on the market today. Check out the prices the bike you want is bringing by using the Kelly Blue Book at http://www.kbb.com. to determine what is a fair price. Where do you find one? You could go to your local dealer. Many have trade-ins for sale at a reduced price from a new one – some even have a warranty. There are many papers, and places that a private owner can list their motorcycle to sell. Also there are many on-line places to locate a used motorcycle. You can also go onto eBay, and look for a used motorcycle. I personally would not buy a motorcycle on eBay. It’s hard

to determine the quality of a motorcycle from a few close-up pictures, and there’s nothing like touching, hearing, and riding before you buy which is normally not possible on eBay. I would rather buy from someone local so I can go and look at the bike before I put any money down. This is still a risky business because the seller might not always tell you the truth. After all, their main concern is to get the bike out of their garage. Check the bike out thoroughly before you buy. Ask questions about the type of riding that the bike was used for, and any maintenance records. If the bike was maintained by a dealer, there should be receipts. Check the normal wear items, tires, brakes, chain, sprockets, etc. If any need replacing, factor that into your equation about how much you have to spend. Stick you finger into the muffler (make sure it’s not hot), if it comes out oily (not just sooty) walk away. If there is blue smoke coming out of the exhaust, the engine is burning too much oil, and needs a rebuild. Check the sprockets, if the teeth are sharp and pointy, they need to be replaced along with the chain. Check out the brake pads and rotors. If the rotors are grooved and scored, they may need to be replaced. Some rotors can cost into the hundreds of dollars. Check the tires for uneven wear patterns. This could show that the bike is in need of an alignment. If the wheels are laced, check for loose spokes by tapping them with a pen or screwdriver handle. They all should have a ring to them. After you have checked out all you can, give the bike an overall look. If it has been abused, it will have that worn look. If it has been down, there will be scrapes and scratches on the side items like exhaust pipes, mirrors, levers, etc. Estimate how much it will cost to get the bike the way you want it. If it will cost more than you have, don’t buy it. If you think that the asking price is too high for what you’ll have to put into it, make a lower offer. They might take it. Don’t buy on impulse, because a friend likes the bike, or has one like it. You are the one who is going to ride and maintain it. It’ll be your butt in the seat so you want it to fit just right! You also don’t want it to leave you stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. If you are not comfortable about this motorcycle, walk away. Just because you are there looking at a motorcycle doesn’t mean you have to buy it. After you have bought the right bike for you, take it to an empty parking lot, and practice some of the exercises you learned in the safety class. Once you have become comfortable with the bike, venture out onto some back roads or residential streets to get the feel of it at speed. Try a couple quick stops to see if the brakes pull or chatter. These are just a few of the things that you should be aware of when getting into the sport of motorcycling. There are many more that will appear the more you ride. Be flexible, always plan ahead, and you’ll have a long enjoyable motorcycling experience. Good luck and have fun!

Do It The Harley-Davidson Way - Fit, Function, & Style

By Wally Wersching I ride all year but I know that some people don’t ride during the winter. That first ride in the spring can be an adventure if you don’t completely check the bike before you ride. Sometimes gremlins take over the bike when it sits for any length of time. The list below will help chase the gremlins away so that your first spring ride won’t be your last. 1. Check the air pressure in both tires – inflate to the manufacturer’s recommendation then check for cracks, and dry rot. 2. Check your wheels. If laced wheels, check for loose spokes. If they are cast, check for cracks. 3. Check the battery. If it needs a charge, charge slowly with a trickle charger. Charging too fast can warp the plates, and destroy the battery. The best thing to do is buy a battery tender that will keep the battery at full charge all winter. 4. Ensure that all the back lights work – tail, stop and both turn signals. 5. Ensure that all the front lights work – headlight both low and high beams, and both turn signals. 6. Check the oil. It also a good idea to change the oil if you didn’t change it before storing. 7. Check the belt or chain for the proper tension. Oil the chain. If shaft drive, check fluid level. Check transmission fluid, too. 8. Check the front end for excessive play, leaks, and any other abnormalities. 9. Check the brake fluid levels, and ensure that the lever and foot control are working properly. If mechanical brakes, check adjustment. 10. Remove the plugs, clean and check gap – or replace with new ones. Check the air cleaner element - clean or replace when necessary. 11. Check that the clutch and throttle controls work smoothly. Lube cables if necessary.

Get New Year Started Off Right, RIDE! By: Jody and Pam Shotwell Freedom Biker Church Fayetteville took their Annual New Year’s Day Lunch Run on January 1st, 2016. It was a cool 50º, cloudy, kind of a good riding day. What a great way to get the New Year started off in the ‘riding’ mode! We had 49 bikes and 11 cars that kicked off the New Year with riding and great fellowship. We met at Freedom Biker Church Fayetteville, 455 Rock Hill Road, in Fayetteville, NC at 10:30 AM with Bill Johnson leading us in prayer before we rode off. This year we made the trip to Western Sizzlin’ in Dunn, NC where we enjoyed the traditional black-eye peas, greens, hog-jowls plus much more. This was the 4th year Freedom Biker Church Fayetteville has made the New Year’s Day ride and we plan on continuing that

A carload of scruffybearded, young men shouting Anti-American slogans with a half-burned American Flag duct-taped on the trunk of their car and a “Remember 9-11” slogan spray painted on the side was stopped next to me. Suddenly they yelled, “Allah Akbar! Praise Allah! Death to America” and took off before the light changed. Out of nowhere an 18-wheeler came speeding through the intersection and ran directly over their car, crushing it completely and killing everyone in it. For several minutes I sat in my car thinking to myself: “Man! That coulda been me!” So today, bright and early, I went out and got a job as a truck driver.

Ethanol Labeling Rule: FTC Requirement Leaves Consumers At Risk

The Federal Trade Commission fell short in its effort to protect consumers with its final rule for labels stating the amount of ethanol in fuel sold at retail locations. Beginning July 14, stations will have to post labels stating “Use Only in FlexFuel Vehicles/May Harm Other Engines” on pumps dispensing blends containing more than 10 percent ethanol (E10). “The FTC did not go far enough in its efforts to avoid confusion at the pump,” says Wayne Allard, AMA vice president of government relations. “Consumers, especially motorcyclists, remain at risk of inadvertently misfueling, with the result being engine and fuel system damage and voided warranties.” None of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in use in the United States is certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Fewer than half say they check fuel pump warning labels before dispensing fuel. “The AMA submitted comments to the FTC, and we were mentioned in the Final Rule, but the FTC disregarded our concerns,” Allard says. “This will not affect the E15 label previously approved by the EPA. This is for the higher ethanol blends. “Unfortunately, this means more ethanol gasoline sharing the same blender pumps with E10.” The AMA cautions motorcyclists to read their owner’s manuals and be vigilant when refueling to ensure they are using the proper fuel for their bikes. Elvis’ 2016 Birthday Party At Down Home Harley-Davidson By Scott Wicker There have been a lot of interesting events going on at Down Home HarleyDavidson recently and on Saturday, January 9th, as usual, they out did themselves again. They held their 2016 birthday celebration for none other than the KING himself, ELVIS! The dealership was overflowing, to say the least, with Elvis fans and well wishers. The Burlington H.O.G. Chapter had its Famous Grill’n and Chill’n going on and members were volunteering to make sure everything was running smoothly. Baked Goods were on sale and we had an Elvis impressionist present to entertain us, too. Several nice gift cards were given away and 50/50 tickets were also being sold. Probably one of the big hits of the day was the opportunity to win a $5,000 gift certificate by matching the required symbols on a scratch off ticket. Unfortunately, no one had a winning scratch off. was a DJ on hand playing a lot of great music including our old favorites. Down Home also held a blood drive, which they do several times a year. Blood is needed probably more in the winter months than any other time of the year. There were lots of give aways and the kids showed their skills in the Hoola Hoop contest and the Ladies were struttin’ their stuff in the dance contest. Specials were offered in every department and I don’t think anyone left disappointed. The day would not have been complete with out having an appearance by the Man of the Hour, ELVIS!! No, it really wasn’t Elvis himself, but folks, this man was the closest and best I’ve ever seen. He rolled off several of Elvis’ trademark tunes and had the girls front row center wanting to get closer to him and have their pictures taken with the KING! I hope Down Home has this event again. It was a big hit! A lot of great events and happenings are coming up at Down Home Harley-Davidson. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar will have all of the events listed coming up in the spring. Don’t miss them! A Waterfall Motorcycle Destination, White Oak Mountain

By: Ron Climer Are you looking for a fun motorcycle ride near Asheville, North Carolina or Greenville, South Carolina or Charlotte, North Carolina or Spartanburg, South Carolina or Tryon, North Carolina? Can you find your way to Columbus, North Carolina? Columbus is the county seat of Polk County. If you have never been to Columbus before, you might want to take a picture of the Polk County Court House. It looks like a courthouse is supposed to look. Once you get to Columbus, the first traffic light is at Houston Street. Go North on Houston Street (1137). Stay to the right at the fork in the road. A half mile later you will come to White Oak Mountain Road. A quarter mile later you will see a speed limit sigh that says, 10 miles per hour. This means you. This road is not for novice riders. It is not for sissies. If you are wearing short pants and flip flops, you might want to reevaluate the situation. There are very few guardrails. Death and danger lurk around every curve. There are plenty of extreme curves. When you get to the top, you can see all

that, you will come to a huge condominium. Stop there for a photo opportunity. This is a view with a capital V. This is not the best view on this road. Go past the condominiums. There will be plenty of curves. Use extraordinary caution. You may encounter gravel and dirt on the road. Sometimes there is water flowing across the road depending on recent weather. About a mile past the condominiums, there is a clear spot with a view from the other side of the mountain. You can see the Washington Monument from here. PHOTO OPPORTUNITY! About a mile later, you will find a smaller waterfall. Just when you think you cannot handle any more curves, you will come to a T intersection. This is Skyuka Road. Turn right. It is about a half mile to Highway 108. When you get there, turn left if you want to go back to Columbus, North Carolina and grab a beer and pizza at The Brick Pizzeria in downtown Columbus. If you had the foresight to pack your own picnic lunch, turn right. It is about a half mile to Harmon Field. This is a big beautiful park with the Pacolet River running through it. No matter how big your group is, there are plenty of picnic tables and a gazebo and restrooms. the way to Walt Disney World. The highlight of the ride will certainly be Shunkawauken Falls on Horse Creek. After you come to the waterfall, keep going up the mountain. You will see a sign that says “Road Narrows”. Are you kidding me? About a quarter mile after

As warmer weather is coming upon us, many who don’t ride during the winter months find their scoots with dead batteries, some with no fuel getting to the motor, or some with no fire in the ignition system. After all, it takes all these for the motor to go “suck bang blow” Some may actually start but run badly. Then for some it’s time to take their pride and joy to a mechanic to be repaired. Now mechanics are a dime a dozen. But a good, honest and fair mechanic is truly a good find. Finding someone you can trust is important, and getting harder all the time. Sometimes we find our bodies in need of repair, so we go to a doctor. If that doctor can’t help we go to another until we find one that can help.
