ow in the world can it be September already? This summer was one to remember. Can you remember when it rained so much? I can’t. Now that you are back from Sturgis, the 110th, and the kids are back in school, we can get back to concentrating on local riding and events in the Carolinas. Thunder In The Smokies in Maggie Valley, NC (13-15), Bikers, Blues, and BBQ at Tilley H-D in Salisbury, NC (20-21), NC POW/MIA Recognition Day at the NC Viet Nam Memorial Exit 100 I-85 (21st), Outer Banks Bike Fest at Outer Banks H-D (25-29) The Fall Brawl and Triad Bull Dog Hero Awards at the Motorcycle Park at H-D of Greensboro, NC (28th), NC Bikers Bash at Farmington Dragway (28th), and the biggest event in September, The 9th Annual Ray Price Capital City Bikefest (20-22) in Raleigh, NC. Check out their ads in this issue or visit CapitalCityBikefest.com for more information. There are many other events happening, too, so forgive me if I didn’t mention them all. That is what the Carolinas Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar is for! Check it out in this print edition. It is the biggest and most complete events calendar on the east coast – on line or in print and it is FREE! Notice the QR code in the print edition and scan it with your smart phone to view all the events that came in after the magazine went to the printer. You can see the Cruisin’ Calendar and also read the entire magazine on line at www. FullThrottleMagazine.com. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine brings you all the best articles, advertisements, and events in both digital and print media. Who loves ya, baby?

1st Annual Women’s Freedom Ride

By: “Old Spook’ Gail Ankney, Founder and President of the Women’s Freedom Ride is sponsoring, a cross country ride from Low Country Harley-Davidson to San Diego, CA on behalf of The Independence Fund (IndependenceFund.org). Gail stated, “One of the main reasons I chose The Independence Fund as our recipients for this year’s charity drive is because they help not just the veterans who were wounded protecting our freedom, but they also help the caregivers which is most often the wives or mothers of the injured soldiers.” The Independence Fund raises money for robotic wheelchairs, therapy, and other care for veterans. They only employ veterans who are not compensated for their work. All proceeds go directly to the wounded veterans. The ride left from Low Country Harley-Davidson on July 21st and is expected to terminate on July 31 in San Diego. They have 32 riders registered for the trip and others are expected to join in along the way for however long they are able to ride. The women rode through bad traffic, hard rain, and desert heat. Dealerships and others hosted them at fundraisers and luncheons along the way. In Amarillo, TX while stopped for the night, Gail’s Fatboy and the trailer her father had made was stolen. It broke her heart, but not their spirit and they pressed on to San Diego. The Amarillo police recovered the trailer and they retrieved it on the return trip. After a wheel bearing went out in Oklahoma City, they ended up replacing the whole axel. The rest of the trip home was uneventful, but it is events like these that make bikers out of motorcyclists and no one was injured along the way, so that’s a good thing. You can read a day-by-day blog and see some pictures from the trip at: WomensFreedom-

Ride.net. I found it real insightful and interesting. The funds raised from donations and merchandise sales will be presented to the Lt. Dan Band on September 14th at their concert at the Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium in Charleston. Gary Sinese who played Lt. Dan in the movie “Forest Gump,” which was filmed in part in Beaufort, is performing the concert for free. Ticket sales will go toward the fund’s mission. Please buy a ticket and attend if you can. PS Three weeks after being stolen, Gail’s motorcycle was recovered. Now she is being victimized by the insurance company who refuses to pay for any accessories that were not recovered. She is having the bike shipped home due to the expense of driving to Texas and back. At least she got the bike back!

Blind Curves A Book Review

By: Molly Infield “What now?” was the question author Linda Crill was faced with when at age 57 she lost the love of her life. This is a question many have had to face with the passing of a loved one, but this documentary of Linda’s journey to her answer is a captivating tale. The publicity release for this book tells us that Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer when she began writing it, but she fought back, finished the writing, and is now encouraging others to explore and answer their own “What now?” For two and a half years Linda had shared her frustration of dealing with the death of her husband with wellmeaning friends and family and receiving sympathetic, soft, advise from them. She had tried all those things only to find that she craved something thrilling and powerful to set her on a new track for her life. The book begins with Linda, with great misgivings, walking into a Harley shop where she had signed up online for the Rider’s Edge Course. This was a huge departure from her lifestyle. She’d been a Fortune 100 executive, successful entrepreneur, international business facilitator, mother, and wife. Weeks earlier, Linda had lunch with an old college friend, and seasoned motorcyclist, who had described a trip he had planned with friends to ride the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Canada to Mendocino California and invited Linda to learn to ride and go on the trip with them.

Blind Curves is an extremely readable narrative of Linda’s trials and triumphs through learning to ride a motorcycle and then becoming a rider on the ten-day motorcycle trip on the west coast. The reader will find passages that are easily related to as well as parts that are truly enlighten. “Discoveries,” she says,” are waiting to be found around each blind curve.” An important life lesson she learned, as we all should, is that life should be lived in the now, this moment and revel in it. She learned that one doesn’t ride to get to the end of the journey, but to embrace every mile of every journey. No doubt, women will be able to understand and relate to Linda’s description of her journey around the blind curve of her husband’s passing for the simple reason that it is from the female perspective. Many can take guidance and revelation to their own hearts reading this documentary. My first question upon completion of the book is: Did she buy her own bike, is she still riding? The answer is Yes! – She bought a red 2011 BMWF650GS and is interested in doing adventure motorcycling around the world. She has joined several motorcycle clubs and plans to continue to write magazine articles and books. “Blind Curves” by Linda Crill is certainly enjoyable and worth reading and can be found at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and BooksAMillion.

Touring “Out West” - Highlights From The Road By: Bob and Ginger Karney If you have never traveled out West to Teton National Park or Yellowstone, put it on your bucket list for sure! Seeing it on a motorcycle was the experience of a lifetime. Friends keep asking us, “How was your motorcycle trip?” Frankly, we find it nearly impossible to respond because words and the tiny photos we took of the gigantic majesty that we call our National Parks just don’t do it justice. Here’s our best attempt at articulating it in a nutshell. It was like we were traveling inside a 3-D Discovery Channel movie the entire time! Every day was a new adventure and every ride we saw something different or more amazing than the day before! Our “WOW FACTOR” just kept escalating as the journey went on. From Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Majesty of the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, The Chief Joseph Highway and the Bear tooth pass (at 12,000 feet!) to the Bison with their babies in the road, the rolling fields of sunflowers in Idaho and the rodeo in Cody, Wyoming, we felt like our brains were on overload! The rides were a spiritual experience we had not planned for. Thank goodness for J.D. Rockefeller Jr. and President Teddy Roosevelt for saving and creating our National Parks. Wow, Wow, Wow! To be there over 4th of July made us really reflect on how appreciative we are to be Americans and that this is our beautiful land. We took one of Lynn Isenhour’s escorted tours and, honestly, it exceeded our expectations. If you don’t know about Lynn, his tours are spectacular; some of the most beautiful rides in the country and affordable for all the personal attention, expertly guided tours, and fun times you have. We rode over 1,500 miles on long straightaways and curving winding roads through canyons with wind in our hair and cool temperatures. Living in the city, we had not had the opportunity to really air it out like that. It was the most joyful riding we’ve ever experienced. The wildlife we encountered, the geo-thermal cauldrons, the hot sulfur springs, mud volcanoes, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, forests, geysers, and Grand Teton Mountain range simply take your breath away. Let’s go back to the wildlife for a brief moment and just say that Bison, Elk, Moose, Antelope, and Bear own that land. We were simply passing though. It was awe inspiring to see “our country, this great northern continent” protected and cared for by our hard earned tax dollars. The Park Rangers were so informative, wearing their cool “Smokey the Bear” hats. We had forgotten that some of the most spectacular places to visit

in the world are right here in the great USA! We will be back for more bike adventures for sure. The best part, if your vacation time is limited, is that Lynn personally transports your bike and luggage in his trailer to the starting/ ending destination. He handles all the planning and travel details of the entire journey. If you are anything like us, we can’t afford to take off enough time from work to ride all the way out to a destination like Wyoming from NC and then ride for 8 days touring the sights. However, Lynn made it easy to just get there and truly vacation on our bike. Super fun with no stress! We traveled with 38 bikers from the Carolinas, 25 bikes total, and by the end of the 8-day trip, we’d made new friends and riding buddies for life. Lynn has such a gift for bringing proficient riders together and touring them to new vistas, hitting all the highlights and making you feel safe and relaxed as you travel over miles of scenic terrain. No maps needed, just relax and ride! We already miss the fun friends we made and invite all of you to join us on the Blue Ridge Parkway this autumn to see the pretty leaves. Lynn, thanks again for a SUPER trip and believe me, we’ll be there with you on your Northern California tour next summer. Save us a spot! The best way to see the country is behind you without a care in this world. We took a ton of pictures, so be sure to check them out on our Facebook page (The Karney Law Firm). If you think you would like to see more of this great country and have been trying to figure out how, we would highly recommend that you go to LynnIsenhour.com and join us next August on the Northern California trip or maybe New England summer after next!

HiToms Benefit for Anslee LeBlanc

By: Rose and Lloyd. Anslee Leblanc, the daughter of Mary and Guy Leblanc, is a three-year-old girl. At 18 months old, Anslee was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia. She immediately started chemotherapy and will continue until February 2014. Through this time, she has spent many times in hospital with complications. On July 31st, The HiToms baseball team held a benefit for Anslee to help pay medical expenses. Many thanks to the team and Greg and Nick for their support. Several Bikes escorted the family on to field including her grandparents Lee and Kay Bennett. It was a beautiful sight to see this smiling little angel waving to all the spectators. Anslee was met at first base by the whole team and family grandmother Donna Nichols and friends; all wanting a minute to hug her and show their heart felt concern for the family. The team took their places on the field and Anslee with her father took the pitcher mount. Anslee threw out the first pitch and what an arm that little girl has. There was a raffle that night for a 40” TV, and the winner gave it back to family. The following Friday was the big bash for HiToms, and they did a 50/50 drawing the recipient again donated the money to

Fat Mac Has Balls

PORK SCHOP Crispy Shushpuppies Stuffed With Pork BBQ. Heaven In One Bite!

By: Rick Gammons Hey bikers! Have you been to Fat Mac’s Pork Schop in High Point yet? If you have, you know how good the food is. If not, don’t take my word for it. Take a ride to 1807 North Main Street in High Point, NC. Fat Mac’s Pork Schop is a biker friendly establishment owned by Janis Beasley and her sister, Donna Hopkins. They started up in April. “Fat Mac” was their dad’s nickname and the food is based around Janis’s recipes for BBQ. The sisters have owned a restaurant in Eden for seven years, so they are no strangers to the food business. Janis is a biker, so she knows what riders want. She told me that most bikers ride a circuit when they go out for beer and food. She understands that. They come in for a bit and usually move on to another bar. That’s fine with her. “Go by and visit some of my bar owner friends in the area.” Rather than put down other taverns, she would rather bikers visit other area businesses keeping them local. By the way, Fat Mac’s Pork Schop has beers, wine, and mixed drinks (soft drinks and tea), which should cover any thirsty rider. Thursday is bike night at Fat Mac’s Pork Schop. There are deals on beer and food with live music on the outdoor patio. Patrons play corn hole, which can be played at any time they are open. Fridays are for corn hole

BIKE NIGHT THURSDAY tournaments with cash payouts for the winners. You should come by and see these games. They are intense. Music is available on Wednesday and Sunday AND the bar ladies are delicious. Janis states, “This is not like any other place in town. I just want everybody to have a good time.” She told me that they also offer catering for events. I asked her what the best seller at Fat Mac’s was. “Janis’s balls” she quipped. “I want everybody to eat my balls.” So, I ate her balls and will do so again when I go back. Just for clarification, Janis’s balls are BBQ wrapped in her special hushpuppy recipe. The next time you are out and about, go by Fat Mac’s Pork Schop for great Q and beer. Tell Janis that Rick said come by and eat her balls. You will not be disappointed. Take care.

9th Annual Sunday Bash At Tilley Harley-Davidson Of Statesville Story and Photo By: Alan Dockery Tilley Harley-Davidson, Statesville, NC, employee, Ronnie Carver, knows a whole lot about Harleys and us who ride them. Nine years ago he thought about how much we like to get together for a party, sometimes just for the fun of it. On July 21st, hundreds of us showed him how much we appreciate his idea at the 9th Annual Sunday Bash. In the summer of rain, wet weather was threatening, but still there were plenty of bikes in the parking when I got there and the road was lined on both sides with lots of cars and trucks, too. Besides lots of great deals on bikes and accessories, there was more to do at Tilley’s that Sunday. The Part-Time Blues Band cranked out tunes rockin’ the parking lot. There was an on-site poker run. Burgers and hot dogs were cooking and there were plenty of cold adult beverages to wash them down with. The big tent and lots of tables and chairs meant we could kick back in the shade with our friends. The proceeds from this big event go to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. The Peoples’ Choice Bike Show raises some of the money. This year winners were: 1st Place - Randy Hager with his 2007 RoadGlide, 2nd Place - Garry White and his 2003 Independent Custom, 3rd Place - Tommy Murphy’s 2002 Standard. Jason Edmonson took Best of Show with his wild 2006 RoadKing. Ronnie expressed his thanks to all the people who turned out for the 9th Bash. The HOG chapter and Rolling Thunder were there all day doing lots of jobs. Lancaster’s Hog Trough Saloon gets a thanks for providing the food and beverages. The Bob Karney Law calendar girls were signing autographs and Bob Karney gave away two tickets to the Kenny Chesney concert. Some girls from Lake Norman Hooters were doing a

bike wash. Anna’s Sweets was serving fresh fruit drinks while 48 Customs was busy much of the day laying down some classic pinstriping on bikes. “A big thanks to Don and Robinette Tilley for letting us have this party for the past nine years,” Ronnie said. Next year will be the tenth anniversary of the Sunday Bash and I hope they have a big one. If you are interested in being part of it, stop by Tilley H-D or call 704 872 3883 and talk to Ronnie.

Widow Maker CDR 10th Anniversary Open House By: Kathy Johnson Widow Maker CDR had their 10th year anniversary party Saturday, July 20th.They had great weather and family, friends, and customers showed up to spend the afternoon and celebrate. Hank Thibodeau, owner and wrench master, doesn’t do anything small. In other words, this was a large event. Over three hundred people attended and he made sure everyone had a full stomach. They cooked over three hundred hot dogs that day. I heard pigs were trying to get out of the county so they didn’t wind up on Hank’s grill. Well, anyway the grill was smoking. I tend to get carried away. What would a party from Widow Maker CDR be with out a bike show? and one people actually wanted to win. Not the typical trophies Hank custom built one of a kind 1st, 2nd, 3rd place trophies. I think we all have had or seen the trophies with the little gold guy on a bike on top. These were truly special as is all the work Hank does on bikes he creates in his shop. I hope you checked out some of the work going on in the shop while you were there. He is cutting edge with pin stripe exhausts tips, flamed accents on exhausts head pipes and many other “custom” one off touches. Get your bike in there and get it done, it’s a definite to do this summer. Now for your lucky winners that had your favorite eye candy that day: 1st Place - James Bunn, 2nd Place - Clarence Ayers, and 3rd Place - Brian Waters. Congrats guys! There were various venders set up that day. It was like a mini afternoon bike rally. I think Hank should throw one of these every year! On a personal note, watching Hank’s business grow over the years has been exciting. I have enjoyed seeing his work and how he educates himself on being current and most of all how he respects his customers and their bikes. Now wrapping it up, Hank, his wife, Anne, and son, Dawson would like to thank (above and beyond) all of you, friends, family, customers, and all the venders. Special shout out to Chaz Carolina Custom Ceramic Coating, Spoiled Biker, Rolling Thunder, and Bikers For Christ. I hope to see you all on the Widow Maker 8th Annual Charity Poker Run on Sunday, September 8th. However, you do not have to wait for an event to drop by Widow Maker Custom Design & Repair. Hank’s shop is located at 5582 Mt. Harmony Church Road in Rougemont, North Carolina 27572. You can Google that to get directions to the shop or call (336) 364-8535 to talk to Hank about your next project.

New Harley-Davidson Footwear 2013 By: Judy Bortz Like everyone in this economy, I try to save money wherever I can, but on some things, you just cannot compromise. My bikes are Harley-Davidson, and my footwear must be as well! The last pair of boots I bought was in 2003, and they are still in great shape. H-D makes quality boots that obviously are built to last, but I just haven’t been able to find a really cute woman’s style made for riding, that would make me give up my old ones! Sure there are plenty of sexy H-D boots for passengers, but not so many for actual riding, until now! The new line of footwear is awesome! I got the “Chryse”, a studded twist on a classic short riding boot that makes a fashion statement on and off the bike. The 6.5” tall boot is made from full-grain leather with a YKK locking inside zipper, which provides ease of wear and easy on and off, and studded buckled straps wrapped around the ankle and a bar and shield logo design for that sexy girlie look I have been searching for (and which coincidently match the paint theme on my Softail). YEA! These boots have great arch support, slip resistant soles, and an interior sock lining that make them comfortable right from the 1st wear, no beak in required! The “Chryse” isn’t as heavy as my old ones, which will make walking around at rallies and rides much more pleasant! The season’s new styles range from 6” to 12.5” heights. All models have slip and oil resistant Goodyear® welt constructed soles that increase flexibility and longevity while the rubber

abrasion and slip-resistant outsole helps increase stability and performance safety. All this makes for a lightweight boot that keeps your feet firmly on the ground, no matter how much oil those cages dump on the road! If you haven’t seen the new line, stop in your local Harley-Davidson shop to check them out, or do a destination ride to a shop you haven’t gotten to yet. Either way, make the footwear section a MUST SEE. You will not be disappointed! Thank you H-D for giving me the comfort, safety, and unique style I have been waiting for! I won’t get rid of my good old double zip boots, but I do believe that the “Chryse” will serve me well for the next 10 years!

Benefit For Todd And Martha McDaniels

By: Rose and Lloyd May 18th, after many unfulfilling issues in their lives Todd and Martha had found each other and were taking the steps to have a life together. They got married, but delayed their honeymoon for a month. During that month, Martha was hospitalized several times with the diagnosis of pneumonia. During one of her periods in hospital, Todd was suffering from what was thought to be a possible cyst on his lower back. He went to his doctor, was given antibiotics, and told to go home. Instead, he went to hospital to visit Martha. With all thanks to God, Martha’s doctor looked at the possible cyst and immediately admitted him and prepared him for surgery. He had a skin eating disease caused by diabetes. Within a couple of days of his surgery, the doctors told Martha that she had stage four lung cancer. They started chemotherapy immediately and after only one IV treatment the cancer, had decreased to the point she needed only to take the oral chemo treatment. Doctors were amazed and knew this was nothing short of a miracle. On Saturday, August 10th, friends Scott Hills and Rick Hucks held a benefit ride to help with their medical expenses. This ride was planned in a little over three weeks. The ride began at Love Of God Baptist Church in Thomasville, went to El Dorado in Denton, then to Morrow Mountain,

Martha and Todd and ending in Southmont. The ride was absolutely beautiful with over 71 bikers participating with love for this family. Several fire departments were represented with riders and even blocking all along the way. The sky seem like the rays were shining right down on Martha and Todd, two exceptionally beautiful people. Many thanks go out to all the riders that came out and gave of their time and hearts and to Pastor Brian Workman for his blessing of the ride. A huge thanks to Oral Hulson riding that day and representing Carolina Container where Todd Works. He presented Todd and Martha with a love donation from all the employees. These are the riders that most average people, by that I mean non-riders, never know about. Many look at the leather, the tattoos, the beards, and hair and assume they are a gang. I have seen with my own eyes when it is a time of need, no matter what the cause, those tattooed, leather wearing, long haired bikers are the ones that are there with the biggest hearts doing whatever is needed to help someone in need.

GOLD RUSH #16

By: Judy Bortz The annual GOLD RUSH Charity Bike Show is one event I always look forward to. Pure Gold just knows how to throw a party! The monsoon that clobbered Wilmington Saturday morning and afternoon did not stop the Pure Gold Staff from setting up another awesome event, and it didn’t stop the bikes from coming in either! True quite a few were on trailers, but hey, it WAS a monsoon! There were a few brave bikers that rode them on in, and personally, I think they should have gotten extra points for riding College Street in the rain. It just does not drain well in even slight showers! There was a lot of time spent wiping down those water spots, but more time was spent with the sexy Gold Rush girls posing on the beautiful machines that entered the show. It was, as always, $20 bucks to enter, with all proceeds going to Duke Children’s Hospital, so kudos to all entries for the support! The pose photos, candid bootie shots, and the Bikini Babe contest photos can all be seen at fullthrottlemagazine.com, along with pics of all the bike show entries. Even though there weren’t as many bikes entered as usual, there were 18 great entries including Performance Cycles 1949 Panhead, and a 2006 V-rod, both 1st Place winners in their class. Other entries included a 2001 Roadstar Custom Chopper, 2005 American Ironhorse Legend, 2007 RPM Chopper, 1949 Triumph Bonneville with shark paint, 2004 Redneck V-Twin, 1950 Panhead, 2006 Kawasaki ZX10, 2006 Big Dog Pittbull, 2006 Custom Chopper that the PG girls loved posing on, a 2007 Street Bob total custom that was awesome, 2008 Heritage Softtail Classic with a great dream catcher paint job, 1997 Softtail Springer you will see in an upcoming biker movie being filmed here, and the days big winners a 1954 Triumph 650 that looks like it just came off the showroom floor, and a 1959 Honda entered by Dave Mins who won 2nd Place trophy for the Honda, and 1st Place and Best of Show for his Triumph. Great job to all the entries, some of the nicest bikes on the road! Judging the bikes were Jerry Boshoe and three members of Carolina Coast HOG Chapter: Will Mitchell, Ernie Wilkinson, and Rick Porter. Great job guys! A great jump show by Adrenalin Junkies topped off the afternoon after the sun made an appearance, those guys FLY! I even gasped a few times, not sure they would land ok, but they always do. They are real pros! The raffle this year was $5 bucks a ticket for a 5-day – 4 night cruise to the Caribbean,

39

and $500 in spending money! I did not win, darn it! Another great nostalgic part of the day was the return of Krystal Cummings who is a local girl who started her career at Wilmington’s Pure Gold, and has made her name known in the industry winning Miss Nude World, Miss Exotic World, and is a nominee for 2013 Exotic Dancing Night Club Entertainer of the Year! She has posed for Penthouse, Hustler, Cherry, and The Gold Files She is a true professional, and a beauty to boot! She spent a lot of time mingling with the crowd, and made the day of quite a few bikers I am sure! Good luck Krystal. I hope you win in Vegas! Thanks Pure Gold, for a great day…RAIN OR SHINE, You ALWAYS do a great job and raise a lot of money for the kids at Duke. KUDOS! Keep the rubber side down. Be safe out there y’all!

L-R Linda Hendricks and Denise Carr By: Old Spook Jeanine Perez is Assistant Director of the first Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Association. Jeanine informed me that this event was organized to highlight the Breast Cancer Awareness Association since it had never been associated with a biker event. It is her intention, with the help of Denise Carr of Ye Ole Tavern of Ladson, to make this an annual event to support breast cancer awareness. Ye Ole Tavern at 9409 Route 78, Ladson, SC is over 100 years old and is one of the oldest biker bars in the low country. What prompted Denise to involve herself in this project was Linda Hendricks, one of her patrons, who recently had a double mastectomy. Breast cancer affects everyone that it touches and Denise felt that she needed to do something to help her friend. Six other participants also supported this run. Wolf Track, Minkys, Cosmos, Main Street Bar and Grill, Thirsty Fish, and Confetti’s helped to make this a successful run. As a first time effort, this inaugural run turned out to be a big success. Over 100 bikes participated and $1500 was raised for the organization. Above all, everyone appeared to be having a ball. , 5,'(

Easyriders Rodeo 2013 Wilson, NC

By: Whistle Easyriders Rodeo 2013 July 12-14 in Wilson, NC was not for the amateurs, it was for the true blue bikers. The event was plagued with rain all day and all night, too. Some joked, calling it mud fest, mudarama, and bike bog. Then the wind blew everybody’s canopy away, and it also got about a dozen port-o-johns. Then finally the power blew Saturday night. No matter, a large time was had by all that attended. The bands were awesome and a change of venue let you ride through the concession area, and a camping permit gave you full access. Hopefully, that will stay the same for next year so you don’t have to throw away your beer to go inside the midway. There has also been a new stage added for the bands and wet t-shirt contest, and this year you did not have to look far for the water, but the new addition kept the band and spectators dry. I have never missed a single event in Wilson since the first one. Every year is different and if it doesn’t rain, they complain, and if it does rain, they complain. So, this year it just poured. When it was all said and done on Sunday, the sun came out and everybody went home. Most of them probably hit a car wash on the way, but they will be making their plans to attend the Easyriders Rodeo next year.

2nd Annual Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson By Scott Wicker On Saturday, July 20th, Down Home HarleyDavidson in Burlington, NC held their 2nd Annual Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson Spokes Model Competition. The contest was held to choose a well deserving young lady to represent Down Home H-D at events held at the dealership and other functions the dealership may be a part of. Ten lovely young ladies took part in three different stages of the event so a panel of judges could make their decisions on which their favorite contestant may be. The first stage appearance made by the contestants was the Evening Gown portion of the competition. Each of the young ladies made their way down the runway elegantly dressed and modeling for the judges and spectators. Each girl then came out for the Daisy Duke part of the contest in their favorite outfit sporting short, short jean shorts, boots, and most of the girls wearing a very colorful and fashionable Harley-Davidson top. Each contestant came down the runway individually for the judges and everyone in attendance. The ladies then participated in the bikini portion of the com-

petition. All ten contestants made their way down the runway individually in pageant style and then as a group again as well. Now, the hard part began. It was time for the judges to make their decisions on who was going to be the winner, the first and second runners up of the 2nd Annual Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson Spokes Model Competition. No doubt, the excitement and anticipation was building among the ten contestants, the judges, and those in attendance too. Last year’s winner, Britteny Pierce, attended and made a brief speech in appreciation of her reign as the first ever Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson Spokes Model. Then it was time. Caitlin Saunders was chosen as Second Runner Up. After a brief pause, it was announced Kelly Fulk was the First Runner Up. Now it was time for what everyone had been waiting for. The announcement of what young lady would be the 2nd Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson. Then the emcee announced Natalie Hancock as the winner of the Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson Competition. Congratulations to Natalie, First Runner Up Kelly Fulk, and Second Runner Up Caitlin Saunders. The other ladies were all great sports and it had to be tough on each of the judges on their decisions for the winner and runners up. The other contestants were Casey Haithcock, Courtney Haithcock, Amber Burgess, Miranda Hill, Maria Ventura, Jessica Gartland, and Jennifer James. I would like to Thank Everyone at Down Home HarleyDavidson for a fun day and a great event. I would also like to thank and show our appreciation for the band, Cold Heart, for the fabulous entertainment during the event as well. Congratulations again to Natalie Hancock, the winner of the 2nd Annual Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson Pageant. Ride safe!

Rider’s Roost - Rollin’ On Da River

By: dpapabear The weekend of Aug 9–11, the Rider’s Roost Motorcycle Resort, located just south of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone/Wilkesboro area in Ferguson, NC, held their Rollin’ On Da River event. Rider’s Roost is a biker style resort and campground situated on the banks of a rolling river with bunk style cabins and grassy camping area for your tents. They are for bikes only and no cages are allowed in the camp area except to load/unload your stuff. The Roost holds several events during the summer months to raise money for their charities. Rollin On Da River weekend is in support of our veterans with parts of the proceeds going to help vets who are homeless or having trouble maintaining a place for their families to live. During the weekend there are bands, karaoke, games, and food. Friday night usually starts out in the game room with Dave or staff spinning some tunes, people dancing, maybe some karaoke singers, as well as the pool table being open also. Saturday starts off with breakfast available for a fee, taking rides around the area, lunch, or just floating down the river or playing in the Good cool mountain water rapids area of the river. Afternoon finds the games going on, supper, tunes, karaoke contest, and dancing into the night. The karaoke contest winner receives a free weekend in the luxury suite and a duck race is held where the wining duck holder receives 50/50 winE-Z PARKING FOR nings from the $5 • Trailers entry fee. BEACH BOUND?

Breakfast Anytime!

WE ROCK!

and Dave and Pam, who made me feel at home all weekend, greeted me. After checking into my bunkhouse, I met couple of riders and started talking. We realized that we were waiting on some of the same friends (John & Tina), whom we had met at the Boone Bike Rally, so we were already making new friends. As I have found out making friends around a group of bikers is no problem. Just smile or say hi and it’s on. I met a guy in his late 70’s from my local area on his bike with sidecar and pulling a motorcycle style popup camper just traveling around and enjoying the freedom. I met a great group of riders from the Raleigh area who accepted our company and pretty much hung out with us most of the weekend. On Saturday, the No Rules Riders group (NoRulesRiders. com) along with several others of us took a ride up to Freeborne’s Eatery & Lodge just off the Blue Ridge Parkway @ mm248 for lunch and stopped by a friends house to wish a special little girl a Happy Birthday. The No Rules Riders did not hesitate at all when asked if we could stop by on our way to ride that morning. Karmma Morman is the granddaughter of George & Lisa (special friends I met at the Spring Boone Bike Rally) who was having a birthday on Saturday. Man, you can’t even image the delight on a little girl’s face when 15+ bikers come roaring into your yard and start singing and wishing you a happy birthday! When we left, Karmma and her sister were both walking around with a handful of money and great big smiles on their faces! Sunday is just a lazy type day, packing up, loading the bike for the trip home, saying your good-byes and just milling around. No hurry to leave unless you have a long journey home maybe. So check their ad in the Full Throttle Magazine or their website, plan a weekend trip and go enjoy! Pictures from the weekend are available on line at www.fullthrottlemagazine.com under the pictures section. And as always, ride safe, enjoy the journey, and have FUN!

1 Annual Folly Beach Shrimp Company Biker Night st

L-R Mikey Zerola owner of the Folly Beach Shrimp Company, Elizabeth Shewfelt from the Nephrology Department of MUSC, and Craig from North Ridge Custom Cycles By: Old Spook On Saturday, August 17th, North Ridge Custom Cycles and American Biker in conjunction with The Folly Beach Shrimp Company put together this event to benefit the Nephrology Research Laboratory at the Medical University of South Carolina. Elizabeth Shewfelt, the program and study coordinator for the Nephrology Department of MUSC, explained to me that they have been working on identifying biomarkers, which would indicate if a person might be susceptible to acute kidney disease. Patients who are having surgery for heart conditions or other major surgeries may be exposed to kidney failure and not know it. This research, although funded, has been drastically cut back as with many government programs, hence the need for this benefit. Elizabeth is collecting data from all over the state for this research project which will eventually help to treat kidney disease before dialysis or surgery are necessary. This type of intervention therapy is critical to this project. Live music was kicking with Triple Dog Dare. Mikey Zerola, owner of the Folly Beach Shrimp Company, and the Fallout Lounge on the roof offers two bands that are available every day of the week. Mr. Zerola recently bought the bar March 1st and extensively renovated the place. Located on the main road coming into Folly Beach right on the corner, at 11 Center Street, the bar offers great views and will be a great location for future biker nights. Despite the rain, 20 bikes and around 50 people attended and over a $1000 was raised for Nephrology Department of MUSC.

“The Last Spartan” Book Review by: WildThing If you enjoy fast paced fiction laced with a little sex, drugs, blood, and motorcycles you are sure to like “The Last Spartan”, by John F. Saunders. The story begins innocently enough at a motorcycle shop in Greensboro, NC with mechanic Frank Kane showing the results of some custom work on a Softail to the owner, a sharply dressed attorney. The author draws the reader in with Frank’s rough history as the enforcer of an MC, battles with other MC’s, and time in prison. The character, Frank Kane, captivates a reader who appreciates a strong masculine hero-type guy, even if they have a past. Part of the character build-up is a history of the fictional Spartan motorcycle ‘gang’ as Saunders refers to them. The leader of the Spartans based rules, hierarchy, and actions, on the real warriors of ancient Sparta, so you get a little history lesson that spices up Frank’s character and activities. He is given a quest: to find the runaway teenage granddaughter of a friend in the seamy side of Atlanta. This gritty tale is a fast read made so by Saunders’ very straightforward writing style. Some may find this narrative a bit clichéd, but it is still entertaining. It was first published in 2008 and is available on Amazon.com, at Barnes & Noble, independent bookstores, and at www.savpress.com. Hurry up and get your copy, because the sequel “Spartan Negotiator” is already out and will be the subject of my next review.

The Burlington H.O.G. Chapter’s Annual Visit To Camp Carefree By: Scott Wicker On Sunday August 4th, over 40 members of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter made their annual visit to Camp Carefree. Camp Carefree has provided a free one-week camping experience for kids with chronic illnesses since 1986. The Camp is located near Stokesdale, NC. The H.O.G. Group made a very safe and scenic ride to the camp to show its support by taking carloads of items the kids need and use everyday. The highlight of the day, as it has always been in the past, is giving the kids rides in sidecarequipped motorcycles owned by H.O.G. Club member Wade Baise and also by volunteer Mike Brown. The kids were lined up waiting when we arrived and patiently waited for their turn to take rides down the winding roads through the Camp. The excitement and smiles on each of their faces was inspiring to each member that made the ride to the camp. The rides took several hours to complete. Each child was given Harley-Davidson decals that were donated by Down Home Harley-Davidson of Burlington. Some wanted to go fast while others were content just to experience the ride. The participation by the kids at the camp was overwhelming to say the least. Many of the kids have been at the camp for several years when the club has made its visits. Many of them have commented it is one of their favorite things they get to do at the camp each year. The staff and counselors provided the club with refreshments

that were very much appreciated on a very hot day. We would like to thank everyone at Camp Carefree for their hospitality and to each of the kids there that made our day such a joy. Thanks especially to the members of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter that took their time and donated items for the kids. We especially thank Wade and Mike for bringing their sidecar equipped motorcycles and unselfishly giving their time to such a great annual event. Remember! Ride Safe!

Christmas In July Ride

By: “Old Spook” This annual event, hosted by American Legion Post 166 of Goose Creek on July 21st, is always well attended. After a fund raising breakfast and a briefing by the police escort, the participants put their kickstands up. Bruce Richburg, Post 166 Commander, thanked all of the participants before the group left. By my count, we had over 70 bikes and a bunch of cages that headed out from Goose Creek Post 166 to the Robert H. Johnson Medical Center, the local VA hospital. This is the 8th year of this event. The men and women collected personal care items, recreational items, and reading materials for the convalescing veterans. Additionally, people had been dropping off gifts in large bins in front of the VA. There easily had to be over 200 gifts available to the veterans. Tom Lynes from Post 179 in West Ashley volunteered as Santa Claus to distribute the gifts. The local police, sheriff’s office, EMT’s, and fire departments all participated. The Sheriff’s Department and N. Charleston Police Department were kind enough to offer an uninterrupted escort all the way down I-26 to the VA.

Spokes & Jokes

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

Bob was sitting on the plane to Detroit when a guy took the seat beside him. The guy was an emotional wreck, pale, hands shaking, moaning in fear. “What’s the matter?” Bob asked. “I’ve been transferred to Detroit there are crazy people there. They’ve got lots of shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, poor public schools, and the highest crime rate in the nation.” Bob replied, “I’ve lived in Detroit all my life. It’s not as bad as the media says. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business, and enroll your kids in a nice private school. It’s as safe a place as anywhere in the world.” The guy relaxed and stopped shaking and said, “Oh, thank you. I’ve been worried to death. But if you live there and say it’s OK, I’ll take your word for it. What do you do for a living?” “I’m a tail gunner on a Budweiser truck.”

leaned in my passenger window, and said in a sexy voice, “I’m a big believer in barter, old fella. Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?” I thought for a few seconds and asked, “What kind of ammo ‘ya got?” A blonde man is in jail. Guard looks in his cell and sees him hanging by his feet. “Just what are you doing?” he asked. “Hanging myself,” the blonde replied. “It should be around your neck,” said the guard. “I tried that,” he replied, “but then I couldn’t breathe.”

island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm tree branches, and the sides and stern came from an Eucalyptus tree.” “But, where did you get the tools?” “Oh, that was no problem,” replied the woman. “ On the south side of the island, a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock is exposed. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into ductile iron and I used that to make tools and used the tools to make the hardware.” The guy is stunned. “Let’s row over to my place,” she says “and I’ll give you a tour.” So, after a short time of rowing, she soon docks the boat at a small wharf. As the man looks to shore, he nearly falls off the boat. Before him is a long stone walk leading to a cabin and tree house. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb struck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, “It’s not much, but I call it home. Please sit down.” “Would you like a drink?” “No! No thank you,” the man blurts out, still dazed. “I can’t take another drop of coconut juice.” “Oh, it’s not coconut juice,” winks the woman. “I have a still. How would you like a Tropical Spritz?” Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they exchange their individual survival stories, the woman announces, “I’m going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There’s a razor in the bathroom cabinet upstairs.” No longer questioning anything, the man goes upstairs into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet is a razor made from a piece of tortoise bone. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside a swivel mechanism. “This woman is amazing,” he muses. “What’s next?” When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but some small flowers on tiny vines, each strategically positioned, she smelled faintly of gardenias. She then beckons for him to sit down next to her. “Tell me,” she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, “We’ve both been out here for many months. You must have been lonely. When was the last time you played around? She stares into his eyes. He can’t believe what he’s hearing. “You mean...” he swallows excitedly as tears start to form in his eyes, “You’ve built a golf course?”

A very pretty young speech therapist was getting absolutely nowhere with her Stammerer’s Action Group. She had tried every technique in the book, but still they stammered and stuttered. Finally, totally exasperated, she said “If any of you can tell me where you were born, without stuttering, I will have wild and passionate sex with you until your muscles ache and your eyes water.” The Englishman immediately piped up; “B-b-b-b-b-b-b-irmingham”, he said. “That’s no use, Trevor,” said the speech therapist, “Who’s next?” The Scotsman raised his hand and blurted out; “G-g-g-g-g-g-gl-lasgow” That’s no better either, Hamish. Now, how about you, Paddy? The Irishman took a deep breath, counted to 5 and eventually blurted out; “London “. “Brilliant, Paddy!” said the speech therapist and immediately set about living up to her promise. After 15 minutes of exceptionally steamy sex, the couple paused for breath and Paddy said “d-d-d-d-d-d-d-dd-d-d-erry”. Bought the missus a hamster skin coat last week. Took her to the fair last night, and it took me 3 hours to get her off the Ferris wheel. This morning I lucked out and was able to buy two boxes of ammo. I placed the boxes on the front seat and headed back home, but stopped at a gas station where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car at the next pump. She glanced at the two boxes of ammo, bent over and

A drunken man walks into a biker bar, sits down at the bar and orders a drink. Looking around, he sees 3 men sitting at a corner table. He gets up, staggers to the table, leans over, looks at the biggest, meanest one in the face and says, “I went by your grandma’s house today and I saw her in the hallway buck naked. Man, she is a fine looking woman!” The biker looks at him and doesn’t say a word. His buddies are confused, because he is one bad biker, and would fight at the drop of a hat. The drunk leans on the table again and says, “I got it on with your grandma and she is good, the best I ever had!” The biker’s buddies are starting to get really mad, but the biker still says nothing. The drunk leans on the table one more time and says, “I’ll tell you something else, boy, your grandma liked it!” At this point the biker stands up, takes the drunk by the shoulders and says, “Grandpa, you’re drunk....... Go home!” I am afraid of a world run by adults who were never spanked as kids and got trophies just for participating.

One day a man decided to retire. He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life, that is, until the ship sank. He soon found himself on an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to the shore. In disbelief, he asks, “Where did you come from? How did you get here?” She replies, “I rowed over from the other side of the island where I landed when my cruise ship sank.” “Amazing,” he notes. “You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you.” “Oh, this thing?” explains the woman. “I made the boat out of some raw material I found on the

A Well Kept Secret

By: Stan Gordon Little do folks know that in an old Chevrolet dealership that now houses Iron Horse Motorcycles of Monroe NC, you will find one of the finest collections of antique motorcycles in the country. The owner, Mike Heafner, has been collecting these motorcycles since 1970. Each has it’s own history, whether it be the previous owner or the paths the bikes have traveled over the years. In this day of modern technology, it’s hard to believe that we ever rode the dirt roads of the country by the glow of a kerosene lantern headlight as exhibited by the 1906 Reading Standard Flat Head V-Twin 1100 cc 12HP. As you walk the floor of this rustic showroom, you realize just how far we have come in the way we ride, race, and live. It is very common to hear folks make comments like “my dad had one just like that” or “that reminds me of the one I had”. It is great to see folks as they reminisce while they make journey through motorcycle history. All of the bikes in this collection run. Many have been used in movie productions or backgrounds in ads of various kinds. As these motorcycles sit quietly on the racks that display their past, the souls that rode them and spent their hard-earned money to initially purchase them have moved on, you can bet that one day, many years ago, they brought great joy to the men and women who answered the call of the two wheel adventure. If you were around in 1914, you probably have seen the Harley-Davidson Silent Gray Fellow model and you’re probably aware that the valve on the exhaust allowed you to soften

the exhaust due to the fact that the act of annoying a horse would get you a ticket. Maybe you are a little younger and your granddad had a 1916 Power Plus Indian. You knew that he had changed the compression of his engine by adjusting a compression bolt located on the top of the head, thus achieving extra power. This came in real handy for those who rode their bikes to the track. Perhaps you know the history of the Henderson Motorcycle Company. In 1929, they offered one of the first 4 cylinder engines in the U.S. The springer front end was considered modern technology in those days. It is hard to find one of these marvels as many of the engines were later robbed from the frames for aviation purposes. Maybe your grandfather worked at the Indian factory and he had a Chief just like the one on display at the Iron Horse Museum. He paid about $475 for this one when it was new. The one in Mike’s collection was built for an NFL player

employed with the Atlanta Falcons who later sold it back to Iron Horse. If you are a 45 cubic inch fan, you would remember that in 1939, Harley made the WLD 45 cubic inch 750cc. They were later manufactured by Harley for the US Military effort and were sent all over the world. The pre-war models are very rare, since they were melted down and used for the production of military equipment. The one on display at Iron Horse once belonged to the Holman Moody race team in Charlotte, NC and was used to pick up parts around town. If you’re ever in the area, or maybe just passing through Monroe, NC, we encourage you to drop in Iron Horse Motorcycles at 1600 W. Roosevelt Boulevard and visit with us for a bit. Grab a free bag of popcorn and walk through time as you gaze upon some of the motorcycles that have helped us get to where we are today. Maybe you’ll feel the presence of the souls that once owned these fine examples of life on two wheels. The only cost to you is a little bit of time and some imagination.

Harold “Pappy” White

By: Old Spook I had just written about a visit to “Pappy” in July’s issue. He had asked the Legion Riders to come visit him after he took a fall and split his head. This highly decorated WWII and Korean War veteran, who was diagnosed 9 months ago with cancer and was given 2 months to live, defied the odds again and passed peacefully while Chris Butler, his caretaker, was combing his hair. The South Carolina Patriot Guard and the American Legion Riders escorted Mr. White to Beaufort National Cemetery where an Air Force Honor Guard rendered services and honors. Chris Butler was accompanied by “Pappy’s” other caretaker Angie. Following the flag ceremony, Chris recited the 23rd psalm and reviewed Pappy’s exploits. Pappy was a track star at Perdue University where he won Gold Medals in the high hurdles. He was a big man, nearly 6’4”, and a playful flirt to the end. When he took Angie to a bar for a drink, he made sure nobody disrespected her. He always was a tough rooster! When Pappy served aboard the U.S.S. Hancock, an aircraft carrier under the command of Admiral John McCain from 19421946, he received the Silver Star, our nations 3rd highest award, as well as the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Purple Heart. The awards revolved around two actions. One action was an explosion on January 21, 1945 when a returning plane crashed killing 50 men. Another centered on a Kamikaze pilot who crashed his aircraft into the Hancock on April 7, 1945, killing 62 crewmembers and

The United States flag is presented to Chris Butler injuring 71. His heroic efforts had the fire out in ½ hour and the deck back in action in an hour. He retired from the Navy and then joined the USAF where he ferried Capitol Hill types to wherever they had to go. Seems that Pappy had a knack for knowing what whiskey they drank so they always asked for him! He died on July 29, 2013 at the age of 91. He had no family to grieve for him. We who were present were honored to witness his passing and memorialize his exploits. These are the men to whom we owe our freedom. God bless you, Pappy.

By: Mark (Stretch) Carlyle On July 13th, Hooper’s Tavern in Charlotte hosted their 1st Annual Benefit For Levine Cancer Institute. The benefit started at 5pm on Saturday with the smell of food and the smoke rising from the cooker. They cooked about 200 lbs. of bar-bque. Approximately 400 people came out in support with all proceeds going to cancer research at Levine Cancer Institute. Music filled the place with a variety of local talent and with a lot of laughs on the patio. Hooper’s had five bands starting at 8pm going until 2am.

Bobby Hammond Luau Memorial Ride

By: Mark (Stretch) Carlyle This ride was to benefit The High Five Club of Rock Hill, SC. The ride was in remembrance of Bobby Ray Hammond. All proceeds were given to The High Five Club in Bobby’s name. Bobby lost his life on May 11th of this year doing what he loved, riding his Ultra-Classic. He worked for AME Crane service for many years. I met Bobby awhile back when he sold me his 2001 wide glide. Bobby left behind three daughters; Jennifer, Angela, and Amy. The ride started at C&S Custom Cycles in Rock Hill, SC. About 40 riders braved the rains in support of Bobby. The stops included Legends, Scooters, The Back Porch, Jokers, Fat

Fingers, Cousy’s Bar, and ending at Lando Beach Tavern. Not sure on how much was raised at this time as money is still being donated in Bobby’s memory. The family and friends want to say “Thank You” to all those that came out in support and the many sponsors that gave their money and time for Bobby. RIP Bobby Hammond 7/9/57 – 5/11/13.

International Bike Show

2636 Lewisville Clemmons Rd. Clemmons, NC

336-766-4945 WE HAVE GREAT PRICES

ON LOW MILEAGE BIKES By: Buzz I love motorcycles, all makes, models, engine sizes and colors, as long as it has two wheels and engine, I am game! So when Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC had the bold Idea to invite the area motorcycles dealers to go heads up into a International Bike Show, I knew I would have to check it out! On July 20th, World Class Powersports (Victory Motorcycles), Midway Yamaha, Ducati Of Greensboro, SRS Motorsports (Honda Motorcycles), Carolina BMW, Reapers Custom Fabrication, and Kendal Johnson Customs all had their bikes on display at Smokin’ H-D. The parking lot was slammed when I arrived and I had to circle the parking lot before finding a spot for my bike! I started at one end of the lot and worked my way around checking out the different brands and the bikes they brought for display. The bike show was full of custom and stock motorcycles of all types. I was not envious of the judges that day as they had a tough job! Inside Smokin’ H-D, the show room was a buzz with folks checking out the selection of new and pre-owned HarleyDavidson Motorcycles, parts & apparel. Freeborne’s South, located in front of Smokin’, had a bar full folks seeking

some AC, good food, and adult refreshment. I made my rounds and took a few pictures (you can check ‘em out at www. fullthrottlemagazine.com) and went back over to World Class Powersports to take a demo ride. We got back from the demo ride without getting wet, but there were some ugly storm clouds on the horizon and unfortunately, their presence ended this event early. I was able to catch up with Tom McGoldrich who won Best Of Show with his beautiful 1937 Indian Chief and take some pictures of his beautiful ride. The rest of the bike show bikes had cleared out pretty quick and I did the same! If not for the bad weather, which was pretty much the song of this whole summer, this event would have raged on until the evening. I hope that there are plans for a repeat of this event and urge you to keep your eye on The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar so you don’t miss out! e Carolina Th s’

Christmas In July 2013

By: Kelly Wescott The 11th Annual Christmas In July 2013 was a huge success! On July 20, 2013, Duke Children’s Hospital has benefited again from the awesome generosity of almost 600 participants. The event has become a weekend getaway for old and new friends alike. Over 382 bikes and 9 Corvettes traveled in massive formation from M & M Leather, Victory of Fayetteville to Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham, delivering a ton of toys and monetary donations. The event actually started weeks earlier with a bike night on May 17th at Thee Backdoor in Fayetteville. On July 2, Texas Roadhouse in Fayetteville generously donated 10% of their receipts to the cause, and in Pembroke on July 13th. The pre-registration party at Legends Pub on the 19th also raised money with a 50/50 drawing and the Renaissance Day Spa gave away a manicure and pedicure to one lucky woman! Over 125 people had pre-registered and enjoyed a dinner of burgers, hot dogs, potato salad, beans, slaw, and veggies with dip, chips with salsa, and pound cake with strawberries. Holly and the Gypsy Women really know how to throw down! Python rocked for us during dinner, sounding great. Thanks to all that helped at the pre-registration party. The day of the ride was gorgeous, with blue skies and no rain in sight, which was a first for a long while! We met at Victory of Fayetteville. Hondas, Harleys, Kawasakis, Victorys, Suzukis, trikes, and even the Cape Fear Team Corvette Club were represented. We had men and women from The Hole Shot Ryderz of Parkton, NC, The Wingmen, the Chrome Knights (with a large group this year, thanks!), Boyz II Men from Raleigh, also back from years past, the Bikers For Christ, The Cape Fear Hog Chapter, The Borinqueneers from Fayetteville. The contingent from the VA WalMart area were present again, glad to see you all back with us. I’m sure there are many others that I missed, and I will try to meet you next year! We are grateful for each and every one of you that attended. The riders were escorted from Fayetteville to Durham by many law enforcement agencies, including, the Cumberland Co. Sherriff’s Department, the Lillington Police Department, the Harnett County Sherriff’s Department, who rode with us all the way, the Holly Springs Police Department, the Apex Police Department, the Wake County Sheriff’s Department, the Cary Police Department, the Durham Police Department, the Durham County Sheriff’s Department, and the Duke University Campus Po-

lice Department. Thanks to all of you for assisting us along the way. We are grateful to have had you with us. Thanks also to the man in Lillington who saluted us all as we rode by, and for the many smiles and waves we received along the way. A delicious lunch from Texas Roadhouse awaited us as soon as we arrived. Chicken, BBQ, Slaw, beans, and green beans were served, yum. They are wonderfully organized and soon we were on our way to the hospital. As usual, it was heart wrenching to be in the Children’s Hospital. The stories the families tell are hard to hear. We are glad to be of some small part of healing for them, even if it is just a toy, or a hug. We are reminded that we are very lucky to do this ride once a year, and not going up there for other reasons. Some of the riders have had to make use of the hospital over the years, and though it can be hard to go, it feels good to give back to them. Arriving back at M & M Leather, music by the tribute band, Out Of The Cellar from Raleigh rocked us all afternoon. With Will and Ponce giving away tons of door prizes the afternoon was a hit. Lots of people won gift cards, t-shirts, hats, gift bags, a new set of pipes for one lucky guy, and a new tire for another. A few Bud Beakers were handed out (ha ha) and lots more. Another 50/50 was drawn, and some artwork was auctioned off, all for charity. Corporate sponsors include M & M Leather, the Wal-Mart Transportation Office 6840, Wal-Mart DC 6040, The Winford Foundation, Texas Roadhouse, The Custom Edge, Gregory Hunt Builders, 96.5 BOB FM, Backwoods Customs, Double D Productions, Taionemedia, State Farm, Cargill, Cycle Works, Cape Fear Aesthetics, JEB Designs and Mission M25. We thank you all very much! In all, it was a wonderful day with lots of good people doing great things. We appreciate each and every one of you. Without you, this ride would not happen. In total, we raised $16,008 and $14,500 in toys and gifts with donations still coming in! We hope to see you next year, mark your calendar for the third Saturday in July. It is an incredible ride for a great cause. See you next year! P.S. Thanks Will and Ponce for all you do!

Summer Bash At H-D Of Greensboro

By: Mark Infield On July 20th, Harley-Davidson of Greensboro held their annual Summer Bash in the Motorcycle Park next door to the dealership. This is such a nice venue with tables under large umbrellas and two large oak trees and lush green grass. It is a far cry from some of the barren, hot parking lots that have been the site of many events. Chunk’s Hawg Haven sits in the middle of it all and faces the stage. Their location provides cold beer, clean restrooms, and affords their patrons a great view of the entertainment from the bar or patio. Daniel Love led off with a set played and followed by The Thrillbilly Band, Steel Horse Band, and Jacked Up rounded out the entertainment. That is if you didn’t count the bikers. They are always entertaining. We had a spot right behind the beer tub and so we got a front row view of the shenanigans. Behind us, the Triad HOG Chapter was grilling hot dogs and hamburgers as fast as they could. I could not resist and the burgers were great. Freedom Biker Church of Greensboro, Wrenn’s Stainless Steel Jewelery, Carolina Field Of Honor, VA Home Front, and two gals doing a bike wash, were there, too. A little shower passed through, but the rain barely even wet the ground. DJ Jerry Carr kept on spinning the tunes we all know and love. The crowd hung out until it passed and went

right back at it. What a pleasant day in a pleasant setting doing what bikers like doing the best. Music, cold beer, and friends. Ralph, Billy, and Pine Cone from the old Wild Bunch were there, too. Get ready for the Fall Brawl booked as “An end of summer bash that you’ll never forget” on September 28th. Bob Karney Law will be there presenting the Triad Bull Dog Hero Awards to bikers who have made a difference in their communities. If you have never been to an event at The Motorcycle Park, I encourage you to attend this one. If you have, I’ll see you there.

His Laboring Few Biker Ministry Of Jesus Christ Perhaps many of you have heard of Preacher Steve’s accident on July 7th. For those who don’t know, I want to fill you in on a few things because it has all been a season of learning for those of us around His Laboring Few Biker Ministry. In the Bible, Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “There is a season for everything and a time for every purpose on earth”. In other words, we all go through all kinds of seasons in life. Ecclesiastes goes on to say there is “a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance….” It is basically saying we are all going to go through many seasons in life and it is all in God’s season and God’s timing. So on that beautiful Sunday morning, after a great worship service, Preacher Steve was playing softball at our annual game. Steve pitched the ball, the batter swung, and the ball struck Preacher Steve right between the eyes causing a brain injury and amnesia. Shocking? Oh, yeah! But, during this season we are in, Preacher Steve is teaching us so much. While visiting him one day at his home, “Popcorn ask him, “Have you been watching much TV?” Steve said, “Not really. I don’t see any point in it!” So as Popcorn and I discussed that conversation, we came to the conclusion that there is little value to sitting there star-

ing at that TV for hours and wasting our time. Time is short. Life is precious and we don’t know what our next season holds. Go take a long ride on your bike, take in the beauty of God’s creations. Visit an old friend and make amends for past differences. Volunteer your time to help someone who isn’t as blessed as you might be right now. Today is a new season. My granny use to say, “Only one life, it will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last!” Live life to the fullest! Ecclesiastes admonishes a man to “rejoice and to do good in his life, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor: it is the gift of God. Love and prayers, Robin St.John
